AboutSanur

T

he history of Sanur widespread through a long space of time. It was started when Ida Bhatara Sakti Dang Hyang Nirartha (a holly priest from Java) came to Bali during the reign of Dalem Waturenggong. After the death of Dalem Waturenggong, the throne of Bali Kingdom was passed on to Dalem Bekung (1550-1580 M), then succeeded by Ida Dalem Sagening/Dalem Ile. During the reign of Dalem Sagening, a yadnya catur wisana (religious ceremony to obtain order of the nation) was held. The ceremony included a sacrifice of a decorated bull head in the middle of Unda River. The ceremony was performed because at that time, the kingdom was in chaos. In the middle of chaotic situation, four brothers of Bhatara Sakti Ida Dang Hyang Nirartha's descendants started a journey seeking new place to live. A place of hope. They are Ida Pedanda (Anom) Bandesa, Ida Pedanda Made Telaga, Ida Pedanda Ketut Penida, and their cousin, Bhatara Ida Pedanda Empu. The four brothers then walked to Padang Galak, Enjungin Biaung, which was ruled by I Gusti Ngurah Agung Pinatih at Kertalangu, Kesiman. From that spot, the four brothers than went on separate path. Ida Pedanda Ketut Penida went to Tabanan and settled in Wanasara. Ida Pedanda Made Telaga moved to Denbukit, and he lived in Banjar Pojok, Buleleng. Meanwhile, Pedanda Empu headed to Perean Village, and stayed at Balwangan, Baturiti, Tabanan. And Ida Pedanda (Anom) Bandesa was granted a place to live at Wirasana, Tangtu. Ida Bagus Ngurah Murdhita, 65, elder of Grya Jero Gede Sanur, to Soul of Sanur Magazine said that during Ida Pedanda (Anom) Bandesa's staying at Padang Galak, Wirasana, Tangtu, the people were in peace and harmony. He applied the concept of Tri Hita Karana (the concept of life balance between god, human, and environment) as practiced by his grandfather, Dang Hyang Dwijendra. According to Ngurah Murdhita, it was not known how long was Ida Pedanda (Anom) Bandesa stayed at Wirasana, Padang Galak, Tangtu. But then, he moved to Gunung Klandis Village, at Sumerta Village. He did not stay there for a long time. Because Ki Bandesa Singgi of Intaran beg Ida Pedanda (Anom) Bandesa to stay at his territory at Wirasana Singgi, Intaran. From his last place, Wirasana Singgi, Intaran, Ida Pedanda (Anom) Bandesa seeked a perfect place to build a home. One day,

14

from a high ground, he saw a white light. He then chased the light and decided to build a home where the light was ended. There he build Graha Ghrya Gede Sanur. Many believed that the name Sanur derives from word 'sa' which means one, and 'nur' means sacred light. That name refers to the discovery of a land in sacred white light seen by Ida Pedanda (Anom) Bandesa. But, in the other opinion, Ida Pedanda Gede Telaga of Grya Telaga Sanur said that the name Sanur could probably means light as a metaphor. In this case, the metaphor refers to the arrival of a Brahmana Keniten (holly priest) which was termed as surya (light) in Balinese culture. About the word 'surya' and 'light', in Sanur alone, there were indeed two embryos of brahmana keniten, who was the descendants of Dang Hyang Dwijendra, such as Sanur clan as the descendants of Ida Pedanda Sakti Telaga Ender, and Batulepang clan from Sinuhun Ida Pedanda Telaga Tawang of Kamasan. However, the history of Sanur was closely related to its beach, the Sanur Beach. Sanur Beach has been famous for a long time, especially during the Puputan Badung war, which burst on September 20th 1906. At that time, the Dutch troops landed their armies at Sanur Beach. In ancient Bali, Sanur Beaches also famous by the proof of written stone (Blanjong Stele) which was a stele from the time of King Sri Kesari Warmadewa of Singhadwala (917 M). Now, the stele is stored in Blanjong Temple, at the south part of Sanur Beach. As in tourism, Sanur Beach was introduced by the the notorious Sweden painter, AJ Le Mayeur, with his wife, Ni Polok. The couple stayed at Sanur Beach since 1937.

Price of Jealousy

Ida Bagus Ngurah Murdhita,65, the elder of Grya Jero Gede Sanur told a story behind the traditional Baris Gede dance performed at Banjar Belong, Sanur. He said that Ida Pedanda (Anom) Bandesa married to two women. His first wife is Ni Gusti Ayu Putu Pacung. They have a child named Pedanda Sakti Ngenjung. On the other hand, his marriage with the second wife, Jero Abian of Abian Kapas, bore Ida Wayahan Abian and Ida Made Abian. It was told that Jero Abian was very jealous to the other wife. In her jealousy, she vowed to herself that should the other died, she would offer roasted pig and Baris dance. That vow then fulfilled up to now in Baris Gede dance performance at Banjar Belong, Sanur. V I N 2 | March - April 2014

da Pedanda (Anom) Bandesa who became theone who discovered Sanur started his journey to new place of hope by throwing a religious ceremony. The ceremony took place in the middle of a chaos. Along with his two brothers and a cousin, Ida Pedanda (Anom) Bandesa held yadnya catur winasa (a religious ceremony to obtain order in the kingdom) by offering a decorated bull head to Unda River.

According to Ida Pedanda Gede Telaga of Grya Telaga, Sanur, the aim of the ceremony was to pray for safety and serenity. After the ceremony was done, Ida Pedanda (Anom) Bandesa went to Padang Galak. Ida Bagus Ngurah Murdhita said, Ida Pedanda (Anom) Bandesa practice the Tri Hita Karana concept during his staying at Padang Galak. It was the concept of balance between human and god, human and human, and also human and their environments. Ida Pedanda (Anom) Bandesa practiced the concept based on the example given by his grandfather, Dang Hyang Dwijendra, a great holly priest in Bali.

16

V I N 2 | March - April 2014

By practicing the concept, the society of Sanur live in serenity, safe, and prosperous. In making harmonious relation between human and god, Ida Pedanda (Anom) Bandesa build Tri Kahyangan (three temples to worship Tri Murti gods, Brahman, Vishnu, and Siva). Those temples are Dalem Kedewatan Temple, Puseh Temple, Kentel Gumi Temple, Padang Sakti Temple, Penghayatan Bhatara Batur Temple, and Agung Mountain Temple. Besides that, Ida Pedanda (Anom) Bandesa designed a certain housing location based on Hindu belief. He plotted his follower a housing area along Batanpoh-Belong area (east-west path) and Pekandelan-Pemamoran (north-south path). The location picked as the implementation of Padma Bhuwana concept (a concept of universe protection). Based on that concept, the universe is protected by uniting civil obligation and religious responsibilities. In terms of religion, a holly priest (pedanda) is obligated to practice nyurya sewana, worshipping god at the dawn of the day. This nyurwa sewana obligation then became the background behind Surya Batanpoh Temple in the east and Surya Belong Temple in the west. Ida Pedanda Gede Telaga said that physical development in Sanur is still growing. So does in religious aspect, many temples are built, such as Kahyangan Ksetra Temple, Maospahit Temple, and Tanggun Suwan Temple. Ever since the time Ida Pedanda (Anom) Bandesa practiced Tri Hita Karana, Sanur Village has Kahyangan Tiga Temple and named Cultural Village of Sanur. V I N 2 | March - April 2014

Environment Sindhu Dwarawati Sanur Turtle Conservation

Giving a Chance to Live Words by Okantara | Photography by Wikanda In the past times, along the Sindhu seaside up to Sanur beach, many sea turtles come ashore to lay eggs. But, as the time goes by, as hotel buildings, restaurants, and other tourism buildings crowded the area, those sea turtles are hesitant to come ashore to that seaside are. However, nowadays, several sea turtles still come ashore at Sindhu beach at night time. Those sea turtles were spotted by a group of people who often gathered at the beach. The turtles' egg laid by their mother at the beach became an easy target to predators like dogs, yuyu (small crab), or even human. When they hatch, the hatchlings' chance to live are very low if they went to the open sea right away. Seeing that truth, a group of people then initiate a sea turtle conservation. Nyoman Wardana was elected to be the leader of sea turtle conservation organization named Sindhu Dwarawati Sanur Turtle Conservation. The organization was

established on September 19th 2012. "The idea came in a group of friends gathered at the beach, there were fishing lovers, diving lovers, also surfers. One day, we saw turtles came ashore to lay eggs at Sindhu beach. Then we thought, 'what a pity, a very vulnerable hatchling has became an easy target to dogs and small crab the minute it hatch'," said Wardana. Their compassion then grew in to curiosity. They want to know how to conserve the sea turtles. "We look the internet for the information. And we learned from television that life chance of a hatchling is very low. Then we decided to build a small Styrofoam box to nurture the hatchlings," he said. In their journey, they met the Chief of Sidhu Neighborhood, who encouraged them to build a real conservation. "We were suggested to make joint effort with Natural Resource Conservation Board (BKSDA). The board then tell us to officially establish conservation group. We were granted permission, legalization, so that we officially named Sindhu Dwarawati Sanur Turtle Conservation, which concerned in saving the turtles," said Wardana. After the group has legally formed, Wardana and his fellow held night patrol along the seashore continously. "We were convinced V I N 2 | March - April 2014

Environment that seashore of Sindhu beach up to Sanur beach was a hatching place for sea turtles. Our elders said before the hotels building, this seashore had been a hatching place for sea turtles. Even nowadays, it is still a hatchling ground. That is what we try to save. In the future, we hope more and more turtles lay their eggs here," he said. In captivity, the hatchlings were nurtured until they are at least six months old. Then, they were released to the open sea, usually in conjunction to special event or just routine realase. Since developed over a year ago, this conservation group has save over 500 hatchling. And 400 of them has been released to the ocean. "Our main goal is to release these hatchlings. Our obligation is only giving them a chance to live by giving them extra energy by the time they ready to be released," said Wardana. In terms of funding, Wardana said that they only rely on society and beach visitors donation. "We are very grateful the society and beach visitors enthusiastic in giving donation, even only in a small amount. Those donation are enough to cover our expenses, such as buy plastic tubs, food, and other things needed for the conservation," he said. Not only runs a conservation, this group also welcome elementary students who wish to know more about sea turtles.

ong time ago, Bali was a small kingdom. Many historical evidence about the ancient Bali. The oldest stele of ancient Bali dated 804 Saka (882 AD), there were also other steles dated 818 Saka (896 AD) and 883 Saka (911 AD). However, the most prominent stele of ancient Bali is the stele of Blanjong, which was dicovered at Blanjong area, in Sanur. Half part of the stele was written in nagari letter (from Indian language) and the half was written in Balinese letter. The stele dated 835 Saka (913 AD) was in the shape of monument and written in old Balinese language, Nagarian, and Sanskrit. It stated the victory of King Sri Kesari Warmadewa of Sanghadwala Palace over his enemies at desert and Swal. The Blanjong stele then became a point of interest for tourists who are eager to know the history of Bali Island. Thus, made the name of Blanjong famous. Blanjong literally means shipwreck. The name refers to the first Dutch ship which was stranded at Sanur shoreline, now precisely at the Blanjong's shoreline. Nowadays, Blanjong has became a part of Intraan Village, Sanur, in the district of South Denpasar, Denpasar City, Bali. The 177 cm

The stele mentions about Walidwipa (ancient name for Bali Island) and its king, Sri Kesari Warmadewa. In order to protect the site, The Cultural and Tourism Department of Indonesia issued a bill on 2010, UU Nomor 11 Tahun 2010, which set the stele of Blanjong as Bali's cultural heritage. The Blanjong stele is actually located in a pura (Hindu's temple). The pura is named Pura Blanjong. Not only the stele, there were also statue from the Sri Kesari Warmadewa's time. Sanur Rider Word & Photograpy by Dedi Kristian 38

S

anur Rider, the name does not only defined as a group of Sanur’s fine humble gentlemen with Harley Davidson, blipping the throttle and ride in pride in the streets of Bali, but the name also carries a spirit of brotherhood, unity, giving heart, as well as mindful safety riding.

Sitting down with IB Agung Partha as Leader of Sanur Rider, Nyoman Suwetha as Field Manager plus a few members is an experience of genuine Sanur’s gracious & welcoming behavior. The man tells the story of how Sanur Rider was formed by few Sanur Harley owners whom familiar with each other already as family & friends, thanks to Sanur’s environment as a village where everyone cares about each other, tied beautifully by culture. These members consist of business man, family man with the same aficionado of motorcycle, where they claim that it’s a thing of ‘soul’ where freedom, manhood and hobby is a good pleasure to share into a brotherhood, in their own words it was a ‘suryak liu’ (harmony shouts of crowd/ agreement of many) that put them together. “It is now a collective of about 90 Sanur bikers from 27 Banjar, most of them are above 600cc Harley Davidson enthusiasts” says the leader. He also revealed that it was officially formed in 2013 at Sanur Auto Festival, and since then riding Bali streets every weekend cruising through places in Bali, including a charity activity to Singaraja landslide victim recently. Sanur rider also believes in safety riding, where manners of security in riding are applied into their activity. As seen that the bond is strong and humble, onwards Sanur Rider will keep on riding not only for pleasure but also for unity, brotherhood, also an open heart for chances to give back to the community. T

he history of Bali covered cultural development. It also related to some Balinese myths and folklores, which bound to background of a place, ritual, even Balinese art.

Balinese attention toward their ancestors legacy made Balinese culture remain preserved. Same thing also occur to a sacred which was still performed hereditarily. At Sanur Village, there is a sacred dance which founded, grow, and preserved. The sacred dance, Baris Cina Dance, grow among the society of Banjar Semawang, Sanur, at Intaran Cultural Village for exact. Only a small group of people who knew Baris Cina Dance as a whole art. Some people only knew the name of Baris Cina, but has no clue that the dance is different from other Baris Dance that also performed widely in Bali. Those who have seen Baris Cina Dance surely will question

regarding the origin of the dance. Seeing its dancer look, the dance seems to be not originally founded in Bali. However, the Baris Cina Dance society bearer have a very close connection to Blanjong Temple in Sanur. The temple itself located near the Blanjong Stele, which stated the triumph of King Sri Kesari Warmadewa over his enemies. Based on folklore passed on generation to generation, the ancestors of Blanjong people left their home at the shoreline of Blanjong, Sanur. They left for a new place to live. "Based on a story passed on from generation to generation, there were war, whether it was during the Warmadewa Dynasty or not, we never sure about that," said Anak Agung Ruma Tanaya, Baris Cina Dance bearer who is also priest of Kusuma Jati Temple. Baris Cina Dance is sacred to the member of Banjar Semawang, Intaran, Sanur, Denpasar. As a sacred dance, Baris Cina only performed in certain place and certain occasion, such as at Baris V I N 2 | March - April 2014

artfigure Cina Temple, temples in Intaran Village area, also other related temple, such as Blanjong Temple. The people of Banjar Semawang worship Ida Ratu Tuan at Pura Kusuma Jati Temple as the prestige (taksu) of Baris Cina Dance on Wayang month in Balinese calendar. The uniqueness of Baris Cina lays on its gamelan, musical ensemble accompanying the dance, called gong beri. Anak Agung Ruma Tanaya said that gong beri was brought by the ancestors when they moved from Blanjong to Semawang. At that time, gong beri only consisted of two gongs, the ber and the bor, which as the time went by was added with kendang (drum), tawa tawa (a small kettle held in the lap or arm and struck on the boss by a mallet with a soft round head), and ceng-ceng (an instrument consists of several small, overlapping cymbals tied to a frame). According to Anak Agung Ruma Tanaya, gong beri-the ber and the bor-were originally came from China. In his study about gamelan, he found the resemblance of gong beri with one in Thailand. The gong in Thailand is still used in wedding ceremony, the same to the gong in Renon area in Bali. Baris Cina was founded when the gong beri has been added with other instrumens an became one barungan (a complete group of gamelan). The name Baris Cina was given because when it was performed, there was a bearer who got trance and suddenly spoke in Chinese. Agung Ruma added, gong beri consists of sungu, ber, bor/bar, big tawa-tawa, small tawa-tawa, kempli, kajar, bebende, klenang, cenceng, and beduk. Whenever played, the instruments produce an upbeat sound. Its sound will rise listeners' excitement. However, the sound of sungu as the opening of the performance thicken the assumption that gong beri was created as war serenade.

yepi Day procession always preceded by Pengerupukan, which is exactly one day before Nyepi. Pengerupukan always waited by the public especially by young children because in the pengerupukan night ogoh-ogoh will be paraded around the village and around the city accompanied by gambelan beleganjur, kentogan and the young couple who go parading with a torch. Ogoh-ogoh itself is a ‘giant puppet’ which made in large-sized creepy, in the form of animals, giant, blind which is simbolyze when a negative thing in human beings or even the wild universe. Ogoh-ogoh been around since the 80s, who initiated the socalled is the former Governor of Bali, Ida Bagus Mantra which is also a Balinese cultural figure who always has a breakthrough and accommodate innovative ideas and creativity of young people and artists associated with Hindu religious ritual. Ogoh -ogoh denoted as bad nature in man, hatred, greed, drunkenness, envy, greed, greedy that crystallized during a year when the last step of procession after being paraded is ogoh-ogoh will be burned or destroyed as a symbol of purification of bad qualities of man. And in the newly reborn expected us clean and always do the Dharma according to religious teachings. Ogoh-ogoh relic made of simple wood and bamboo frame; frame is formed and then wrapped in paper. Currently ogoh-ogoh makers increasingly innovating to make the ogoh-ogoh framework by assembled iron, woven bamboo which wrap ogoh-ogoh body was replaced with a cork or stereo foam with modern painting techniques that ultimately cost swelling in the making, but generally do not become matter because it is usually obtained from public donations and business people. Theme ogoh-ogoh was more varied, from theme puppet shows, modern, up to the political porn that does not reflect the meaning of religion. Theme of ogoh-ogoh is expected to be in accordance with Hindu religious values which are God, Man and Bhuta Kala as a counterweight ties all three. Ogoh-ogoh symbol is in accordance with the literature and must be stipulated in the grip of religion and not like a few are made today, because many of us look funny when made in human form, Rocker, punk, human / giant sexy and Nudity. But from another viewpoint said ogoh-ogoh was the creativity of young people who exploit the form of natural phenomena and social phenomena that occur in society at this time so no need for restrictions or restraints of expression. culture The History of Ogoh-ogoh

The name ogoh-ogoh is taken from Balinese “ogah-ogah” which means something which is shaken. In fact, when ogoh-ogoh is paraded around it is always shaken by the carriers of ogoh-ogoh to make it looks like moving or dancing. Besides that, the pose of one ogoh-ogoh to the others is different and various, so each will have different moves when it is shaken. Even, now with the development of technology, many ogoh-ogoh can be moved assisted by machine or other tools There are so many version of ogoh-ogoh history in Bali. Some people argued that ogoh-ogoh have been known since the era of Dalem Balingkang (ancient Balinese kingdom). At that time, ogoh-ogoh is used in the procession of Pitra Yadnya or so called Ngaben. There is also another argument stated that the existence of ogoh-ogoh is inspired by the tradition Ngusaba Ndong-Nding from Selat Village, Karangasem which also used a similar figure to repel evil spirit. Another statement is that Barong Landung is the one inspired the creation of ogoh-ogoh. Barong Landung is a kind of giant barong which is a manifestation of a scary ancient king and queen named Raden Datonta and Sri Dewi Baduga. However, the most certain fact is that ogoh-ogoh was started to be named “ogoh-ogoh” since 1980’s. At that time, it was also the first time Nyepi included in the list of national holiday. Then, Balinese started to create the figure of onggokan which was called ogoh-ogoh in some part of Denpasar. After that, this culture spread wider into all Bali and then also firstly involved in the parade of Pesta Kesenian Bali XII (Balinese Art Festival XII).

Ogoh-ogoh Festival

Usually, before the Pengrupukan night, an ogoh-ogoh festival will be held in Puputan Park Denpasar. Ogoh-ogoh which could enter into this event are selected from some region of Denpasar. This event is hold to honor and appreciate the creation of ogoh-ogoh which possesses high art and theme value. Ogoh-ogoh which are entered this festival are not haphazardly taken, because they have been undergone a selection process. These ogoh-ogoh must have high value of art, theme, and entertainment. The theme which is usually used is around the story of Wayang (Ramayana or Mahabaratha) of other Hindu stories. Besides that, when they arrive in the area of Catur Muka Crossroad Puputan, the lifters and their crews must show a dance show or attraction which tell the story or theme of their ogoh-ogoh in front of the judges. Ogoh-ogoh festival in Puputan is usually held a few hours before Sandi Kala or evening. After the festival overs, Pengrupukan night is continued with ogoh-ogoh parade from villages or banjar around the area of Denpasar. In other regencies beside Denpasar like Gianyar, Tabanan, or Buleleng, ogoh-ogoh festival is also periodically held. However, sometimes the festival is not done in Pengrupukan, but in particular events such as Town Anniversary, and so on.

-SaraswatiWords by Ferina Suci | Photography by Slamet Melda Saraswati is a prominent goddess in Hindu. As the consort of Brahma, the god of creation in Tri Murti concept, along with Sri (Lakshmi), Vishnu’s consort, and Uma (Durga), the consort of Shiva, Saraswati is called Tridewi. The name Saraswati derives from Sanskrit, ‘saras’ means something that flows, and ‘wati’ means to have. So, Saraswati means something that flows, like conversations or words. Saraswati is known as the goddess of river, art, knowledge, and music. Saraswati is very much like Apollo in Greek mythology. Saraswati is described as a beautiful lady with soft and glowing skin, which means knowledge will give inner beauty. She dressed in white as a metaphor that true knowledge will bring to modesty. Saraswati pictured sits on lotus, which is a metaphor of Sang Hyang Widhi (the term of God in Hindu). Like a lotus that live in three different environments, its roots grow on mud, its stem grows on water, while its flower blooms on the open air, knowledge will grow, develop, and useful in every situation, everywhere. Besides that, Saraswati has two geese, on the right and on the left. Both of the geese are the goddess’ sacred mount. It symbolizes wisdom, the ability to analyze the good and the bad. A peacock also located near her feet as a symbol charisma to those who mastered knowledge. Saraswati pictured in four armed lady. Each arm symbolizes different aspect of human personality in mastering knowledge. They are mind, intellectuality, self-awareness, and ego. In each of her arm, she holds specific item. Such as a manuscript is the sacred Veda, a symbol that knowledge is universal and eternal. A mala of crystals represents the never ending learning, without a start or an ending. A trunk as a symbol of the source of all knowledge, the mighty God. And a veena, musical instrument, which means that knowledge is actually art. Mastering knowledge will grow a sacred vibe, rise an esthetic atmosphere, and lead to the right path of glory. As the goddess of knowledge, Saraswati is worshipped by Balinese Hindu on Saturday on Watugunung month of Balinese calendar. The celebration held every 210 days or 7 months. The celebration usually filled with morning service at the temple, school, office, and other manuscript storage or libraries. At night, the worship continues with manuscript reading which related to dharma (goodness). On the next day, on Sunday, Balinese Hindu will throw banyupinaruh or sacred bath, as a symbol of obtaining the knowledge. V I N 2 | March - April 2014

or along time the word ‘emotion’ frequently used in our daily life. JP Chaplin in psychology dictionary explained that the definition of emotion variously formulated by psychologist on different theoretical orientations, but the general consensus defined that emotional or a state of complex reaction that attaches a high level of activities and deep changes, and accompanied by intense feelings, or affective state. Emotion can be defined as a state associated with the stimulated organism, includes deep conscious and behavior changes. It is more intense than a simple and ordinary sense, which also covers the organism as a whole creature. Entire artworks in this exhibition have bold articulation on its various visual exploration based on the interpretation of emotional aspects of the artist during their creative process. Emotions are “appear” as an internal stimulus for the creative process, they are “appear” as the visible and vivid subject mater. As can be seen on Darmanegara’s artwork where emotional aspects are treated as a game that excite him. In his electric works, he combines expressive (abstract) and controlled matters (traditions) at ease. The merger between the abstract that demands emotional expressions as freely as possible and traditions such as presence of such a vocabulary mangsi sigar techniques and ornaments that require emotional

control in the creative process is an interesting thing to be reviews. There is an emotional “negotiation” that may occur in composing an expressived and controlled matter in a visual construction. While Wayan Subi seems to live up the Aristotle’s concept in the emotion particularly on how conceived by Aristotle as “negative emotions” such as anger, anxiety, spooky, and other emotions that suppress human life. Aristotle set those emotions in the heart of the experience (expression) of tragic art, identify the tragic pleasure generated by these emotions, and assume that the rise of those emotion caused by a (expression) tragedy which will produce “cathartic” mental effects. Wayan Subi that treats any of his works as his diary that express various feelings or emotions in a great intensity on various things that he felt in his life ranging from sadness, anger, passion and others. While emotional aspects presented by I Made Sukamerta on his artworks refer to emotions on social discourse approach proposed by Antariksa. Emotions placed as part of a social construction. Emotions generate its meaning and power from public discourse. As presented on his artworks, Sukamerta displays figure or portrait of society which is considered as a lower or marginalized class. His works try to arouse our social emotions as civilized human beings, as well as to stimulate the emergence of empathy and sympathy of any appreciators toward the social conditions that occur around us. Those are a bit of interpretation of each artists on emotional aspects both those who set it as the background in producing their works or vividly set it as the subject matter of their works. They present their ideas from various stimulus both internal and external which arouse and evoke emotions, then applies those as the background of their creative process. Various forms of stimulatants which arouse emotions in psychological terms referred to as; emotive.

Michael Cho from South Korea | Bali Beach Golf Course and Sector Bar Restaurant

The course is in fine condition. A previous reviewer talked about damage, but there is no trace of that now. The greens are lightning fast and the all-round state of maintenance was very good as well. There were several greenkeepers at work. To me the course provided sufficient challenges and choices to make over the 9 holes. Greenfee was $90 US and I did rent a standard set. If you play with a member. the greenfee is IDR 275, that’s worth buying a member ;-) . Overall an enjoyable round with a nice caddy.Would sure like to play there again. And commend to Sector Restaurant A very recommended restaurant with great taste of foods, great atmosphere with green GOLF VIEW and great location in the middle of city. A must visit restaurant in Bali! Food recommended: Bebek Goreng (Fried Duck), Baramundi ,and Pork Ribs.

Painters Coloring

the Sanur on the Spot Words & Photography by Soul of Sanur

Fourteen artists of Bali on the Spot Painting Group held painting exhibition entitled Sanur on the Spot at the Griya Santrian Gallery on February 7th-March 7th 2014. Among the 14 artists, most of them are autodidact artists. They are A Pandi, Aricadia, Bambang Wiwoho, Chandra Gunawan, Dony Libra, Edie Supriyanto, Joko Paryono, Ki Cakil Sarsito, Lukman Usdianto, Moelyoto, Pranagung, Santoso, Sugeng Biyanto, dan Taufik Kamajaya. On Friday (7/2) at 7 pm, The Chairman of Sanur Village Festival (SVF) Ida Bagus Gede Sidharta officially opened the exhibition. The event itself featured 23 paintings which was painted on the spot during the Sanur Village Festival on 2013. All the painters who originated outside Bali Island have been joining art program in Sanur Village Festival for several times. They also performed painting and body painting demo. According to Gusde--Sidharta Putra's nickname--the featured artworks were fresh, colorful, and perfectly narrating the festive atmosphere of Sanur Village Festival. "I truly appreciate all the artists who were participating in the Sanur Village Festival for these several years," he said, Thursday (6/2). Gusde stated that performing on the spot painting gives a certain challenge to the artists in their art creating process. It was because a lot of people would be watching the artist painting, yet the artist has to deliver an artwork perfectly. Thus, there are only a small number of artists who elaborate on the spot painting. However, Gusde hoped

72

V I N 2 | March - April 2014

those artists can develop their talent on regular basis in order to brighten up the tourist destination. Yudha Bantono, one of SVF's art program official who also wrote introduction for the exhibition, stated that art has been part of Sanur Village Festival since the event was initiated on 2006. "This is an affirmation that art and Sanur are inseparable. It is like cooking. If the ingredients are not vary, how bland the cooking will be. Well, that's how I see art program and SVF," he said. Sanur Village Festival always presents art event in form of installation art exhibition, body painting, and on the spot painting. Those events have always been point of attraction. On the 8th SVF on 2013, body painting and on the spot painting enlivened the event. The two art programs became an art reading arena for public which melted perfectly with other event in the festival. Bringing up on the spot painting event on to the SVF is a proof to an effort designed by SVF's committee in order to celebrate every living aspect of Sanur community, including art. Several artists elaborate on the spot painting not only to create an artwork, but also to present a chat room for visitors to embrace art. Thus, on the spot painter's tasks have developed, which is to serve public in understanding art. Visitors were able to watch the artists during their creative artistic process and record it on to their mind. In the other hand, the artists pictured the scene on canvas. By that way, on the spot painting successfully introduce art out of the comfort of an art studio as well as the private room of the artists. In the end, all the art made by on the spot painting artists which were exhibited successfully pictured the festival as well as leaving a deep impression to the visitors. The artists consistently exploring people interaction, moving in line and color, and unify Sanur in a celebration of proud. V I N 2 | March - April 2014
