comment the Slaney News is delighted to see that three new businesses opened in town in october – dealz, the Hill bar (in the former castle bar premises) and the Wilds (café & deli, design & craft). We wish them well and hope that many more new businesses will follow in the months and years ahead. the premiere of the movie, Brooklyn, was a special night for enniscorthy with more glitz and glamour than ever before in the town. let’s hope the movie will be a huge commercial success and that many tourists will be attracted to our town. once again congratulations to the enniscorthy Tidy Towns Assocation on helping the town achieve a bronze medal in the national tidy towns competition. last month the Association held its awards night acknowledging all those who have played a part in getting the town to this high level – see report on page 6. the sod-turning for the new enniscorthy By-pass took place last month and hopefully this will be another step to improving the commercial life of the town as bypasses have successfully done in many other towns around the country. Finally just a reminder to “support our own” in the lead-in to christmas. Please consider buying enniscorthy Gift Vouchers as presents – see pages 14 and 21 for more info. We all know people who work in the retail and service sectors in enniscorthy and these vouchers will help keep those jobs safe. – Frank Corcoran

Enniscorthy Credit Union – helping you stay out of the Red Enniscorthy Credit Union urges people in our community to avoid unnecessary debt and moneylenders this Christmas.

DrEaMinG oF a WhitE ChristMas? LEt EnnisCorthy CrEDit union hELp you stay out oF thE rED Christmas is all about giving... not stretching the family finances. As the big day gets closer, many families are deep in preparations for the Christmas holidays and, though it is a time of joy, this puts a lot of pressure on hard-pressed parents trying to give their families a holiday to remember. We have all been guilty at some point of overspending at Christmas. It is easy to get caught up in panic buying and overspending which may result in families becoming financially stretched beyond their means, or having to borrow – in some cases from moneylenders.

enniscorthy Credit union

But this doesn’t have to be the case says Enniscorthy Credit union. They urge our community to avoid borrowing beyond their means thus avoiding a sack-full of debt in the New Year. Research has found that 60% of Irish consumers believe there is nothing nicer than a proper Irish Christmas and on average plan to spend €590 at Christmas. This is increasing every year and about 50% of Irish consumers expect to borrow to get through the Christmas period – borrowing on average €410 per person. For some people however it can take up to 9 months to recover from overspending at Christmas and this is why the credit union wants to advise people to be sensible and think hard about what they are spending their money on. paddy Lennon, Chairman at Enniscorthy Credit union said: “While people really enjoy the build-up and the time spent with family, many tend to over spend and in many cases get themselves into unnecessary debt. We want to encourage people to plan ahead and avoid this situation in the future by going to their credit union and starting a Christmas savings account for next year.” he added: “Setting a Christmas spending budget is more important now than ever as is writing a list. This will allow people to keep a tight rein on the Christmas shopping costs. Enniscorthy Credit union staff are happy to sit down with you at any stage and talk to you about a budget plan or a loan.” paddy concluded, "If you have to borrow for Christmas, be sensible. Borrow where the interest is right… not on your doorstep. Come in to talk to us about our 1 year loan!" *Cost of Finance. For a €500, one year variable interest rate loan, with weekly repayments of €10.21, an interest rate of 12%, an APR of 12.68%; the total amount payable by the member will be €530.68. Enniscorthy Credit Union on hand to help you through the Christmas season with competitive 1 year loans

A momentous day

Official sod-turning of the M11 Gorey to Enniscorthy Scheme, L-R: Cllr Kathleen Codd-Nolan, Minister Brendan Howlin, Anne Mernagh (landowner), Minister Paschal Donohoe, Minister Paul Kehoe, Cllr Tony Dempsey, and on extreme right Cllrs Johnny Mythen and James Browne.

the signing of contracts for the design, construction, operation and maintenance of the M11 Gorey to Enniscorthy motorway scheme and the official sod-turning took place on 16th of october in templescoby, Enniscorthy. Construction may commence on site later this year or early 2016 and is expected to take 3½ to 4 years to complete with several hundred construction jobs involved. In the words of local Minister Paul Kehoe, “Not only will the new road significantly reduce the travel times between

Enniscorthy and Dublin but it will go a long way toward alleviating traffic congestion in the town… This is a momentous day for Enniscorthy, as the easing of congestion will make the town a much more attractive prospect for shoppers, which in turn will have a significant impact for the businesses in the town centre.” The route of the M11 Gorey to Enniscorthy PPP Scheme is to the east of Enniscorthy, extending from the southern end of the Gorey Bypass at Clogh to a new junction at Scurlocksbush,

approximately 1.5km to the north of Oilgate. This section of the scheme will be 27km of new motorway. The scheme also includes 8km of new single carr i a g e w a y, t o t h e w e s t o f Enniscorthy, linking from the existing Scarawalsh Roundabout to Templescoby on the N30. In addition a further 4 km of new dual carriageway will link those two sections. The link will commence at a new grade separated junction at Ballydawmore and extend across the Slaney Valley to the Scarawalsh Junction. n

New Leader funding Wexford Local Development has been holding a series of meetings and workshops around the county in an effort to establish a communal strategy for the allocation of Wexford’s €9.8m share of the national Leader pot of €250m. The consultation process included a gathering on 29th September at the Riverside Park Hotel, where it was the turn of those involved with Community and Enterprise in the Enniscorthy area to put forward ideas and suggestions to be part of the roadmap for rural development in County Wexford from now until 2020. CEO of Wexford Local Development, Brian Kehoe, told those gathered that over the past number of years WLD has assisted a long list of projects throughout the county under both Community and Enterprise headings, investing over €5m into communities through projects like Wells House, Loftus Hall, Wexford Craft Trail, Heritage Trail, Walking Trail, Garden Trail, Bree Community Centre, Kilmuckridge Memorial Hall,

John Wall and Dave Ormonde - Chairman and Secretary of Wexford Local Development. Pic: Maria Nolan.

Wexford ICA, Walled Garden at Tintern, Gorey School of Art, Innovate, The Church Institute and Newbawn Walking Track to name but a few. In line with recent local government reform, the new Local Community Development Committee (LCDC) based in Wexford County Council will be responsible for the delivery of the next Leader Programme in the county. The key implementation partner will be Wexford Local Development.

The priorities under this new Leader Programme are social inclusion, poverty reduction and economic development and Expression of Interest Application Forms a re n o w a v a i l a b l e f ro m Wexford Local Development. So get your skates on Enniscorthy local community and enterprise groups and put your name in the hat. Staff at WLD who have a wealth of experience and expertise will be only too delighted to assist you. – Maria Nolan

SecuriTy DonT’S Tech Tip BaSic (not only) for Windows 10

by DaviD pohluDek Ferns compuTer services

Windows 10 brings along all the security goodies provided in Windows 8.1. Windows 8 was the first version of Windows to ship with a complete antivirus/anti-spy/anti-malware package baked right into the product. Here are a couple of important things you shouldn't do, to keep your computer running Windows securely. Don't trust any pC unless you, personally, have been taking close care of it. Even then, be sceptical. Treat every PC you may encounter as if it's infected. Don't stick a USB drive into a public computer, for example, unless you're prepared to disinfect the USB drive immediately when you get back to a safe computer. Assume that everything you type into a public PC is being logged and sent to a pimply-face genius who wants to be a millionaire. Don't install a new program unless you know precisely what it does, and you've checked to make sure you have a legitimate copy. Yes, even if an online scanner told you that you have 139 viruses on your computer and you need to pay just €49.99 to get rid of them. Don't tap or click a link in an email message or document and expect it to take you to a financial site. Take the time to type the address into your browser. Don't forget to change your passwords. Yeah, another one of those things everybody recommends, but nobody does. Except you really should. Don't trust anybody who calls you and offers to fix your computer. The "I'm from Microsoft and I'm here to help" scam has gone too far. Stay sceptical, don't let anybody else into your computer, unless you know who they are. Don't forget that the biggest security gap is between your ears. Use your head, not your tapping or clicking finger. n Ferns Computer Services has been in business in Ferns since May 2007. Homes for 19 families on Friday 16 october 2015 nineteen families in Enniscorthy were provided with new homes through a partnership between naBCo (ireland’s co-operative housi n g p r o v i d e r ) , We x f o r d County Council and naMa. The new housing at Parkton Mews, Enniscorthy, is the first housing co-operative to be opened in the south east and was officially opened by Minister for Public Expenditure and Reform, Brendan Howlin TD. The homes in Enniscorthy are part of a previously unfinished estate and the completion works have been provided through a partnership between NABCO and NAMA’s special purpose vehicle for social housing, NARPS. The homes have been leased for 20 years under an agreement with NABCO and NARPS. This is the latest in a series of partnerships between the two agencies that has already delivered 58

Congratulations to all involved in securing a bronze medal for Enniscorthy in the national tidy towns Competition 2015 – a wonderful achievement. Enniscorthy scored a total of 293 marks out of a possible 450, which was five marks more than in 2014. as always, however, litter and tidiness is a problem and the town scored just 46 marks out of a possible 90 in that section. the local tidy town group and the local council staff can’t solve Enniscorthy’s litter problems by themselves – it is up to each and every one of us who lives in the town to ensure we don’t contribute to the litter problem in any way and that we encourage our family members, neighbours, friends etc to do likewise. The tireless Tidy Town Association held its annual awards night in the IFA Centre on 29th October and presented prizes to the following deserving winners: puBLiC BuiLDinGs: 1798 National Visitor Centre. shop Fronts: Stamps Public House, Market Sq. Budget 2016

Fianna Fail opts for B&B!

Cllr James Browne

Fianna Fáil members in Wexford have selected Councillor James Browne and Councillor Malcolm Byrne to contest the upcoming General Election. More than 350 party members voted at the selection convention, which was held last month in the riverside park hotel in Enniscorthy. Councillor James Browne from Enniscorthy is a practising Barrister having studied at Waterford IT, UCC and the King's Inns. He was elected to Enniscorthy Town Council in 2009, the youngest member elected and was elected to Wexford County Council in 2014 with the highest vote in the county. James is a director of two non-profit organisations, Athenaeum Restoration Fund and the National 1798 Rebellion Centre.

Cllr Malcolm Byrne

Councillor Malcolm Byrne, w h o i s c u r re n t l y H e a d o f Communications with the Higher Education Authority, topped the poll at last year's local elections in the Gorey area and then served as Chair of Wexford County Council. He is a law graduate of UCD and has previously served as Chief Executive of the national Community Games organisation. A former Vice-President of the National Youth Council of Ireland, he was named as one of the 40 under 40 European Young Leaders for 2014. Speaking following the convention Cllr Browne said, “I am greatly honored to have been selected to represent Fianna Fáil members in Wexford at the forthcoming General Election. People are looking for a credible alternative to the policies pursued by

Fine Gael and Labour, and I believe Fianna Fáil offers that alternative. The people of Wexford need a strong voice and effective representatives to express their concerns, champion their causes and bring about real change. “Fianna Fáil is committed to providing a real alternative to Fine Gael and Labour. We are the only party that is offering the people of Ireland a realistic plan for the future. We continue to fight for a strong middle ground, where we foster enterprise and create jobs, but we never forget our obligation to those who need an extra help.” Councillor Malcolm Byrne continued, “The next election will be about choices between a Government that focuses increasingly on the better off, the revolutionary left that fail to cost anything that they propose and Fianna Fail that prioritises the building of a fair society that supports aspiration. "We have to prioritise creating jobs, putting roofs over people's heads and supporting educational opportunity. "The housing crisis in the County has spiralled completely out of control, with almost 4,000 families on the waiting list for housing. Nationally, Fianna Fáil has put forward a radical housing plan which would deliver 150,000 new homes for families. We have also put forward measures to help families in mortgage arrears and to secure the release of local authority housing units, which provide short, medium and long term measures to deal with the housing emergency.” n

Eirgrid – solution to highvoltage, overhead lines Fine Gael Wexford tD and Government Chief Whip, Minister paul Kehoe, has welcomed the confirmation that Eirgrid has found another option to high-voltage overhead power lines, following the review process that was instigated by the Department of Energy, Communications and natural resources. “This is very good news for communities in Wexford, who have worked hard to resist further development of overhead pylons. I have met with a large number of these communities and worked with them in conveying their concerns to the Department, which initiated the review.” A spokesperson, Mary O’Neill, for County Wexford Energy Action Group (CWEAG) has welcomed the confirmation that Eirgrid has chosen to adopt an alternative option to high-voltage overhead power lines for the GridLink project, following the “review process” that was instigated by the D e p a r t m e n t o f E n e r g y, Communications and Natural Resources. Ms O’Neill stated: “The solution confirmed by Eirgrid is that ‘new technology’

(although in truth it is not new at all) would be used to bolster existing lines running between Cork and Kildare, via Wexford. Eirgrid admits this meets the needs of the project, without building new large scale overhead infrastructure. “The new technology being used is known as ‘series compensation’. This would be the first time it will be used on the Irish transmission grid. It is a widely used, advanced, smart grid technology that will enable more power to flow through existing lines, and so does not require new 400 kV overhead lines. “This is good news for communities in Wexford, who have worked hard over the past two years with elected officials, to resist further development of overhead pylons across Wexford. “We insisted from the very start that Eirgrid's process was fundamentally flawed as all alternative options were not explored and the need for grid upgrade in the south east was not proven. Our claims have now proven to be correct. CWEAG states that lessons must be learnt and that all large-scale electrical and renew-

New Garda investment Local Fine Gael TD, Minister Paul kehoe, has welcomed the announcement by the Minister for justice and equality, Frances Fitzgerald, that €5.3 million is to be spent on 260 new Garda vehicles between now and the end of the year. These vehicles will be used to assist the Gardaí in their pursuit of mobile gangs. “investment in An garda síochána will continue with the recruitment of an additional 600 gardaí to add to the 550 who have been recruited since this government reopened templemore. investment will also continue through the capital Plan 2016-2021 which provides an additional €46 million for new garda vehicles.” the minister also pointed out that, “in July, minister Fitzgerald published a new bail bill to strengthen the law to get tougher on serious and repeat offenders out on bail. this new law will see a clampdown on repeat burglars and will support the gardaí who work extremely hard to catch criminals.”

Cllr Johnny Mythen, who will be contesting the 2016 General Election for sinn Feín, has described Budget 2016 as being "Constructed by the well-off, for the well-off." Councillor Mythen said, "On the initial examination of the last budget from this current government , we are again confronted with the well established traits of election years. "The level of unfairness under the Labour Party/Fine Gael regime continues to grow substantially with every year that they remain in power. "Budget 2016 has been constructed by the well-off, for the well-off. "The social obligation to tackle the housing and homelessness crisis, the biggest since the foundation of the state, has again fallen foul of corporate taxes, high earners, and the culture of old school politics. "The government say that they will build 20,000 houses. However, there will be only 2,000 units for social housing, mostly in the greater Dublin area. For regions outside of Dublin, the government's action amounts to the equivalent of a flea on an elephant's back. "The €69 million allocated to local authorities for social housing equates to roughly €2.9 million for each local authority. This would build approximately 20 houses in each location. To put this in perspective, Wexford alone has over 3,000 families on the social housing list. "Old age pensioners, people who have worked hard all their

Cllr Johnny Mythen lives, are once again the forgotten generation and they are being belittled by these neoliberal policies. To give pensioners only an increase of €3 a week is a downright insult. "Pensioners have already seen their prescription charges sore by 50%, along with the family home tax, water charges and the cutting of their telephone allowances. This is not to mention the cuts in home help hours, and the household benefits package – all this expected from a measly €230 a week. "It's the late late budget show with something for everyone in the audience, except those suffering on the margins of our society. "This is clearly an electiondriven budget. The Irish people will not be fooled, or fall for the Trojan horse politics of this current government." n

able projects, including the North South Interconnector, must be halted and fully independently assessed and costed and that community involvement should occur in the early stages of planning of all such projects. “CWEAG wishes to thank the huge contribution made by all supporters in letters written, submissions, involvement in events and fundraising, which is much appreciated. The group will continue to be actively involved in energy related matters such as promoting reductions in energy use, promotion of energy production locally and opposing the need for high voltage overhead lines nationally including the North South Interconnector.” n

the story… This story of Sleeping Beauty comes from the Kingdom of Arcadia. Arcadia is ruled by King Wimpole and his very dominant Queen, Bossonova. When Queen Bossonova gives birth to Princess Beauty, a grand christening is proclaimed and invitations are sent to everyone throughout the kingdom, except for one – Wizard Weazalbane – the most powerful evil wizard in the land. Angry that he has not been invited, the Wizard turns up at the christening and puts a curse on Princess Beauty that when she reaches the age of 17 she will prick her finger on a spinning wheel and die. Princess Beauty’s Godmother, Fairy Liquid, makes the curse less severe and changes the spell that she will not die, but fall into a deep sleep for 100 years, or until she is woken by true love’s kiss. The King and Queen declare that all spinning wheels shall be banished from the Kingdom. But Weazelbane is determined not to be defeated. On the day of Princess Beauty’s 17th birthday, Wizard Weazalbane tricks Princess Beauty and she pricks her finger and falls into a deep sleep. The palace nursemaid, Aunty Septic and her two colleagues, Herman Vermin and Lucy Lastic, set off to find Princess Beauty’s true love, Prince Regal of Romantica and bring him back to Arcadia to waken Princess Beauty and all at the palace from 100 years of sleep. Weazalbane is never too far from them and puts many obstacles in their way, including a terrifying dragon. But with some help from Princess Beauty’s three Fairy Godmothers, Fairy Liquid, Airy Fairy and Fairy Nuff, the team eventually return to the palace and Princess Beauty is woken from her sleep, Wizard Weazalbane is defeated and all live happily ever after. n

This multi-media performance takes us on a journey through Brendan’s life, from growing up as an only child on the northside of Dublin in the sixties, qualifying as a microbiologist (Baghdad) to becoming an actor (Fair City), stand-up comedian (Vicar Street) and award winning photographer. Rathnure Panto – BarBara dickson 20 years of fun Something special is happening this Christmas as Rathnure Pantomime Society is celebrating its 20th Anniversary. In 1995, it all began with Cinderella, and now, 20 years later, after 20 pantos, numerous Tops shows and 6 original musicals, the society is going as strong as ever. Hundreds of people from Rathnure and the surrounding areas have been involved down through the years, and it has always been a part of the community in a very positive way. Generations have grown up with the Panto in Rathnure, and now, coming to the shows have become a family tradition. To mark the occasion, a special “€6 for everyone” offer for opening night on December 10th, a 20th Anniversary Booklet and many more events will be announced in the coming weeks. However, amid all the activity of a birthday atmosphere, there is still the big job at hand of getting this year’s show on the road. This year’s panto is “Wish Upon A H e a r t : T h e F o rg o t t e n Princess”, once again written and produced by John Reilly and Liam Sharkey. Santa’s North Pole Workshop is working at full speed to get all the toys out in time

Colm Tóibín’s ‘Brooklyn’ A love letter to Enniscorthy

by Laura Mullett

It was a night that Enniscorthy will never forget. Homegrown talent is something very special so it’s no surprise that the premiere of Brooklyn was the perfect stage to honour author Colm Tóibín who has brought not only joy but commerce to our town.

I asked the Enniscorthy native how it felt for Brooklyn to transcend to the big screen:

Brooklyn is a great credit to the town as it provokes nostalgia a n d g i v e s c o n t e m p o ra r y Enniscorthy people a window in to what the era was really like. From the scenes where a boy would ask a girl on the sidelines in the Athenaeum to dance seems so antiquated now yet seems so romantic to modern day disco-goers. From heading to mass in your Sunday best to everyday town life, whether you’re from here or any town outside Wexford this film captures what is touchingly relatable. Brooklyn gives a window into 1950’s Ireland and has that laugh out loud Irish humour that is tongue in cheek but so harmless at the same time.

“When it opened at the New York Film Festival just watch-

Personally I’m a big Saoirse Ronan fan – I first interviewed

Brooklyn is a heart wrenching story of emigration, loss and two loves divided. I asked Tóibín what it was like to have Brooklyn filmed in Enniscorthy: “I was born here and the novel is set in the very streets I was brought up in and the idea was that the film would be shot in those very streets so it’s not like fiction or as though we went to Hollywood and made a set to look like Enniscorthy. John Street in to Court Street, Lower Church Street, the Athenaeum – all those places looked great in the film. It was exciting.”

ing it was odd! It was just pure Enniscorthy! I nudged the man next to me who was American and I said ‘That’s Enniscorthy! That’s Enniscorthy.’ It’s on the map now which is lovely and also seeing it in London the same way is just great.”

Laura Mullett is a top Irish Fashion Stylist and Journalist who styles Ireland’s hottest stars for TV and magazine spreads. The Enniscorthy native also works as a red carpet radio reporter for RTE, as a Personal Shopper and showcases all the latest beauty and fashion trends on her blog ‘Lipstick Gossip’. Laura gives her fashion tips monthly in the ‘Slaney News’. her five years ago on the red carpet of the Irish Film and Television Awards and I found her to be humble but interesting and since then Ronan is what can only be dubbed a chameleon actress. As one of the youngest women ever to be nominated for an oscar and with her quintessential Irish cailín looks Saoirse Ronan was the perfect fit as a leading lady for the brave, sensitive, coming-of-age soul that is Eilis. Toibin expresses his thoughts on the actress: “It’s wonderful that she is a star and that this is her first Irish part. She’s not anyone’s girlfriend, anyone’s daughter, anyone’s sister in this movie. It’s her film and it’s a really

good part for her. We were really lucky she was free to do it and the way in which she can do something within seconds with her face as a mood changes – that can take me thirty pages to do! I learned a lot from her! It’s been wonderful working with her.” One factor that made the film for me was that so many local people had the chance to be extras in Brooklyn. I caught up with two young local boys, Conor Sinnott and Ben Kavanagh, who had an opportunity they will forever associate with their childhood. I started off by asking Conor what filming was really like: “It was good! You had to go

in and out when you had your part, we had to go in and out of the chapel and the yard millions of times. We had to wear really short shorts and shirt and a pullover jacket.” I then posed the same question to Ben who was excited about the “great experience” and how cool it was to meet Saoirse Ronan. The schoolboy continued, “Saoirse Ronan was really nice to us because we were wearing short shorts so when we got cold she went and got us blankets and things. She was really nice to us.” I asked the boys what it was like to be in a big Hollywood movie. Ben said, “Everybody

in school wants to know about it and our friends will be able to see us in it so it’s really good”. I wanted to make sure to garner some wisdom from the pair so I asked for some advice on how to get in to the movie business! Ben told me, “You have to squeeze yourself in to the costumes.” I think that means I will be cutting out the chocolate to get in to those Brooklyn short shorts! All in all it was a very special night of glamour and unanimous pride but above all else it makes the world realise just what a small town with a big heart such as Enniscorthy has to offer. n

Enniscorthy economic briefing Hosted by the local Chamber and Enniscorthy Municipal District (EMD) Council on Tuesday 6th October at the Riverside Park Hotel, this economic briefing for businesses in the Enniscorthy area provided an opportunity for local businesses to network and hear about plans, supports and grant assistance available from Wexford County Council, including the Local Enterprise O ff i c e , We x f o r d L o c a l Development and supports to business provided through Department of Social Protection. MC’d by Municipal Manager Padraig O’Gorman and introduced by Chairman Paddy Kavanagh with presentations from Key Speakers – Tony Larkin, Director of Services, Wexford County Council, Tom Banville, Head of Enterprise, Wexford Local Enterprise Office, Patricia Delaney, Department of Social Protection, Fran Gleeson,

Employment Liaison Officer with We x f o rd Local Development, John Burke O’Leary, President Enniscorthy & District Chamber, this business-to-business initiative was a platform for Council and support organisations to outline their plans and backing for business in the Enniscorthy area going forward. The tempo was upbeat and positive, John Burke O’Leary said, and Enniscorthy had much to be proud of and much to look forward to with employment up in the town and works ongoing at Market Square and the Athenaeum and the town preparing itself for the Irish Premiere of Brooklyn and the 1916 Commemorations both of which will bring national and perhaps even international exposure to our municipality. Both Mr. Burke O`Leary and Paddy Kavanagh spoke of the commencement of the flood relief measures and the proposed Bypass and announced

the launch of the 2015 Christmas Festival with a planned spend of €60,000 focusing on town centre attractions most notably Enniscorthy Castle. In conclusion EMD Manager Padraig O’Gorman complimented Tidy Towns on winning a bronze medal saying that the next goal was the silver one and paid tribute to the many festival committees who worked together over the summer to provide major enter-

tainment on the streets of Enniscorthy – Strawberry Fair, Battle Re-enactment, Food Fest and Rock & Roll. So it seems it’s onwards and upwards as John Burke O’Leary launched the Enniscorthy Retail Investment Prospectus as we look towards a different kind of Revolution for Enniscorthy for 2016 – a revolution of the mind... perhaps! – Maria Nolan

Diarmaid plans to use his €20,000 prize to fund the purchasing of capital equipment which he hopes will create further employment opportunities in his company.

Although none of the Wexford finalists made it through to December’s national final, they will all share a €50,000 investment fund through the Local Enterprise Office, from the county final stage of the competition. Well done to all three Co. Wexford entrepreneurs. n

Fine Gael TD for Wexford, Minister Paul Kehoe, has encouraged more Wexford young people to return home, to what is a recovering jobs market. “The Live Register figures released this week show that job creation measures are paying real dividends for Wexford with a reduction of over 900 people on the live register in Wexford in the last month alone. The Wexford Live Register figure has decreased 24.6% since February 2012, when the Government launched its Action Plan for Jobs. “The Government is on track to replace all the jobs lost in the crisis and to bring about a situation where there will be more Irish people coming back home to take up jobs. I look forward to seeing more Wexford young people returning home where they belong. “While we know that not every family has felt the benefit s y et , last mont h t he Government announced a €27

Wexford-Benelux easy access A new Birmingham-Antwerp route has been introduced by VLM Airlines allowing passengers flying from Waterford Airport to reach continental Europe more easily. The VLM Airlines service on the route will operate thrice weekly on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays and is scheduled to dovetail with the Waterford-Birmingham route to facilitate convenient transfers at Birmingham. Passengers leaving Waterford Airport at 11.50am will arrive in Antwerp at 5pm while return flights leave Antwerp at 11.35am and arrive in Waterford at 3pm. Desmond O’Flynn, CEO, Waterford Airport said: “With this new service from VLM Airlines, those flying from Waterford at around midday

can reach Antwerp by late afternoon via Birmingham. Antwerp is a very attractive city for short-breaks but if that’s not their final destination, passengers can then travel by train to Brussels or to numerous other great cities such as Ghent, Liege or even Rotterdam, all of which are within an hour or even less of Antwerp.” The Airport CEO also revealed details of a recent onboard passenger survey from the Waterford-London Luton and Waterford-Birmingham services operated by VLM Airlines. “Early top-line results from the survey indicate that well over 90% of passengers rate the services as ‘very good’ or ‘excellent’. “The survey has also revealed that there is a high

uptake from repeat customers, some 20% of passengers have used the service more than three times! Also, almost 30% of the passenger traffic to London Luton is for business, showing the importance of connectivity between the southeast region and the greater London area in terms of economic activity. “Overall, both services have been strong over the summer months, but we still need the region to continue to use and support the two services as much as possible, to ensure growth and development through the winter months and into 2016.” Further information about Waterford Airport is available at www.flywaterford.com while you can book flights at www.flyvlm.com n

VET DIARY FOR NOV. with the Moyne Veterinary Clinic

This month, Joe Kavanagh looks at the advantages of microchipping your dog. One of the wonders of modern technology is that everything seems to be getting smaller. A computer back in the 50's took up possibly a full room where as now a more powerful version can sit on your lap or in your pocket. With the advent of this new technology has come more affordable and cheaper electronic goods. So how does this impact on our lovable fourlegged friends? Well with legislation, that was introduced last year, all puppies born from 1st April 2015 must be microchipped. The microchip is a tiny little rice-grain sized gizmo that will contain the details of the owner of that animal. It has loads of advantages in that if your animal is lost or worse still stolen the microchip will be an immediate method of identifying the owner straight away. We had a case only a few months ago of a dog which had been stolen from a garden in Carlow over a year ago, arriving into our clinic, after been picked up on the road. We scanned her looking for a microchip, found it and contacted the lady whose details were on the database. Within a matter of hours the owner and dog were reunited and very happy to see each other too.

Over 200 of St. Aidan’s parishioners came together at Bellefield GAA Complex on Tuesday 15th September to bid a fond farewell and show their appreciation for Fr. Richard Lawless, recently transferred to the parish of Craanford after 9 years of dedicated service to St. Aidan’s. Fr. Billy Swan said that he had been a colleague of Fr. Lawless for the past 3 years and many times marvelled at his great gift of administration. Fr. Lawless, he said, was highly organised with a wonderful overview of how the parish worked. Fr. Billy said that he had great memories working with Fr. Richard who was extremely active and vibrant in the community along with having a terrific sense of fun and always enjoying and living in the moment. He was also a most caring man dedicated to visiting the sick and housebound. He thanked Fr. Lawless on behalf of all parishioners for the great work he had done during his 9 years at the Cathedral. Aine Doyle, Chairperson of the Parish Pastoral Council, said that she had one up on Fr. Swan having worked the entire 9 years with Fr. Lawless on a variety of committees and always found him to be a sincere and committed person who always got

things done with the utmost efficiency. In times of difficulty Aine went on to say Fr. Lawless always made himself available and was always at the other end of the phone for his parishioners when they needed him. Michael Ormond, Chairman of the Parish Finance Committee, commended Fr. Richard for his organisational skills saying that he was both hard working and methodical and it had been a pleasure dealing with him. He wished him well in his new parish saying that Enniscorthy’s loss would be Craanford’s gain. Presentations were made to Fr. Lawless by both the Parish Council and the Parish Finance Committee and Maria Nolan presented Fr. Lawless with a jersey on behalf of the Rapparees/ Starlights Club thanking him for his tremendous contribution to the Enniscorthy community during his tenure and complimenting him in particular for his major contribution to social media. Fr. Lawless, she said, had introduced St. Aidan’s to Facebook and she thanked him for all the photographs over the years and said that she was aware that he now had a Craanford Facebook page and was looking forward to seeing a photo of him in his jersey on it.

Fr. Lawless said that he was both emotional and speechless by all the wonderful tributes and all the good things said about him, in fact he said it was difficult to recognise himself. He went on to say that he had had a marvellous time in Enniscorthy, got to know lovely people and had grown to love St. Aidan’s dearly and indeed it had been heartbreaking for him when he first heard of his transfer but he said he was now becoming accustomed to his new position in Craanford but he still missed the people of Enniscorthy and the great staff he had at St. Aidan’s. He thanked everyone who had any involvement with his farewell function and Enniscorthy for the warm reception he had always received there. Fr. Billy Swan wrapped up by thanking all for attending, Ted Quinn for providing the wonderful music, William Kinsella for the delicious food, Aine Doyle, Michael Ormond and their committees for their hard work organising the event and Bellefield GAA Complex for providing the venue. Before concluding he welcomed Fr. Lawless’ successor, Fr. Odhran Furlong, to St. Aidan’s and wished him a great future there. – Maria Nolan

As of spring 2016 it is mandatory to have all dogs microchipped. How this will be enforced I'm not sure but that's the law that has been enacted. This weekend we had two dogs found on the road – neither with a microchip. Both animals look to be well fed and looked after and are possibly missing after all the fireworks of the last few days. They will leave here to go to the pound and hopefully be reunited with their owners. If not the pound can only hold them for a certain length. It’s not expensive to get this microchipping done, it can be done with a routine check-up and come next year it’s going to be up to each of us to have it done. It might be the easiest way of finding your little one if they go walk about. n

Fr Richard lawless with well-wishers at his farewell function in Bellefield GAA Complex in september .

St Pio Feastday celebrations St. Padre Pio always draws a phenomenal crowd to St. Aidan's church in Ferns each year when his relics arrive for his feastday remembrance and for the annual healing Mass. This year was no exception, in fact the crowd was bigger than ever for his feastday celebrations on 23rd September. Thousands crammed into the church over an hour before the Mass began, and car park attendants had to direct traffic to alternative parking facilities nearby, as the church carpark was full to capacity by 6pm. Capuchin Friar Fr. Sean Kelly OFM Cap brought special guests along with him this year. Br. Anthony Kurian, a post-novice from India, and three postulants, C.J. O’Dwyer from Dublin, Ade Green from England and John

Doone from Belfast. Brian Stone a member of Halston St Parish in Dublin also accompanied the group. On their way down to Ferns they made a stop at Valentia Nursing Home to bless all the residents with St Pio’s relics. It made a huge impact on everyone there to each receive the special blessing and to be visited by the friars and postulants. Fr. Sean Kelly concelebrated the Mass along with Fr. Paddy Cushen P.P. Ferns, Fr Paddy’s brother Fr. Bernard Cushen, Fr. Billy Swan, Fr. John Byrne and Fr. Leo McAuliffe from the Capuchin Friary in Carlow. There were people in wheelchairs, lots of children, babies and elderly. People from all parts of the county came in their busloads. Everyone came to hon-

our and remember St. Pio and they carried with them their own private intentions in their hearts – everyone came looking for healing, physical, emotional and mental and there was no doubt that St. Pio’s presence was strongly felt in St Aidan’s church in Ferns. A basket collection was taken up and a portion of this money collected went to help Br. Kevin feed the homeless at the Capuchin day centre in Dublin. The stewarding and organisational preparations in Ferns were exceptional. Car park attendants were in place, people helped to give out rosary beads, people helped in the shop and Francis Davitt and the choir provided beautiful uplifting music. It was a beautiful outpouring of faith as a diocese. – Patricia McNally

View from the Hill GeneRAl election Over the past few months I have looked at the records and prospects of our outgoing T.D.s in relation to the general election which the Taoiseach now tells us will be in early 2016. Ministers Brendan Howlin and Paul Kehoe along with Deputy Mick Wallace have been reviewed. As both John Browne and Liam Twomey are standing down there is little point in looking at their record for the purpose of this current exercise. The Fianna Fail position is not that clear yet as the party has nominated both James Browne of Enniscorthy and Malcolm Byrne of Gorey leaving the entire south of the county without any representative whatever. In fairness to

the two nominees they have seen the danger of this strategy and called for an additional candidate to be added. When the position is clearer we will have a look at their prospects. This month we will look at Johnny Mythen who is the declared Sinn Fein candidate. Councillor Mythen, to give him his proper title, has been a member of Enniscorthy Town Council and has also served as Chairman of the Council. He is currently also a member of the County Council and is by all accounts an extremely hardworking councillor on behalf of those who approach him with a problem or difficulty. He is prominent in such movements as anti water charge protests etc. and will always be

found to the forefront of marches or demonstrations. It has to be said that this is quite easy for a member of a party which is in opposition and doesn’t actually have the responsibility of running the country. Having said that it is a fact that a huge percentage of the population is totally miffed that the other main parties Fine Gael, Labour and Fianna Fail have over the past eight years or so seemed to target the same sector of the community when imposing measures of austerity. This will be reflected when those same people come out to vote and will have a big effect on the outcome of the election both in County Wexford and beyond. From Sinn Fein’s viewpoint Co. Wexford has to be a genuine target for a seat. Over the past two elections the party has done exceedingly well in the constituency with John Dwyer of New Ross picking up over 5,000 votes in 2007 and Anthony Kelly of Wexford getting 4,300 votes in 2011 despite the fact that Dwyer stood as an independent and got over 900 votes bringing the republican vote again back to 5,000 plus. This time with the wind at their back and a candidate strategically placed in the centre of the constituency, and a county councillor in each district, their chances were never better. However for Sinn Fein to get a deputy elected in Wexford they have to almost

Cllr Johnny Mythen

double their previous best vote because any single party candidate needs a massive number of first preference votes to be elected. Furthermore Sinn Fein may not get a huge number of preferences from other parties or independents. As to whether Johnny Mythen should, in my opinion, be elected it’s impossible to say. In fairness he hasn’t sat in the Dail or Senate and his only record is his council work. As mentioned above he is a hard-working councillor and when Chairman of the Town Council represented Enniscorthy with dignity and honour. The next question is will he be elected. That’s impossible to call at this point but one thing is sure and that is that he will be there or thereabouts and any party or individual who fails to see that will do so at their peril.

RoAdwoRks I wrote some time ago here about what I saw as a scandalous waste of public money in resurfacing the N 11 f r o m B l a c k s t o o p s t o Scarawalsh. Since then I see no reason to change my opinion. In fact the carry-on at that project would make the calmest person on earth livid. For starters the roundabout at Blackstoops has been left halffinished for weeks and the Scarawalsh roundabout capers deserve an award for incompetence. On the Friday of the recent bank holiday weekend I happened to be travelling from Gorey back to Enniscorthy and could not believe that at approximately 4pm in the evening work was still going on at that point. Traffic was held up for at least one hour, literally driving people mad. So bad was it that after I got through I parked up and walked back to view the spectacle. Whatever entity authorised this work on that day and hadn’t the intelligence to call a halt when they saw the effect of their activities either doesn’t care or lacks basic intelligence. And I’m being mild in my comments. Billy wAlsh Much has been written about the former Irish Boxing Head Coach in recent times. All I have to say is that I am not surprised at his treatment by those we consider our

own. Isn’t that what we always do to our fellow Irish when they achieve something. Drag them down. Make little of them. Bring in a stranger to do the job. Oh boy we’re great at it. In any other country in the world when one of their own achieves something the achiever gets positive recognition. But not in Ireland. We seem to take pleasure in begrudging achievers whether it’s in sport, business or education. Instead of saying “Well done on that” the reaction usually is “He or she was lucky” or “Who did he or she scam to get that.” Am I being unduly harsh? I don’t think so. Whatever anyway the best of luck to Billy Walsh and his family. And FinAlly A sales assistant in one of our local shops (which shall remain nameless) told me this one the other day when I went in to buy the paper. One day recently a man came in and went to the card stand and was looking at the anniversary cards. He was there so long that the assistant approached him and queried as to if she could help. ”I don’t think so honey”, was his reply, “I can’t see anything there that she would believe.” n We are often asked: Who is the “View from the Hill” columnist? All we can say is that the author’s surname is NOT Doyle!

BUNCLODY’S NEW ART BANK Words and Pics by Miley Carroll P.R.O. of Enniscorthy Camera Club Culture Night 2015 (Friday 18th Sept) was celebrated in Bunclody with the opening of its newest arts space – Art Bank – situated in the former AIB premises on Main Street and featuring dozens of art pieces from artists from throughout Co. Wexford and further afield. The venture is the brainchild of local artist, John Renwick, who spoke of the high standard of works on display, and his vision for the building to become a centre for all artistic practices and a showcase for established and emerging artists. He said he was encouraged by the support for the venue by the business community in Bunclody and he thanked Sugar and Spice, SuperValu and Aldi for sponsoring the launch. Art Bank was officially launched by international curator, Anya von Gosseln, who told the packed house that Bunclody had strong connections with the art world, and she saw Art Bank as a creative meeting place where artists could meet and talk about their work, display their talents and interact with members of the public. Art Bank is now open at Main Street, Bunclody. n

last month, trócaire's communication officer Mr. eoghan Rice spoke at weekend Masses in Barntown church. He was one of ten representatives of Trócaire who visited churches in the Diocese of Ferns to say a word of gratitude for the €170,000 raised in the Nepal Appeal earlier this year; to thank locals for their ongoing support of Lenten campaigns and to highlight the recent papal encyclical on climate change, Laudato Si issued by Pope Francis. Last year Trócaire helped over two million people worldwide and this huge effort was made possible by the contributions of congregations such as exist in Barntown. n

communities, walkers and cyclists sought for 2016 commemoration event. The Backroads to the Rising event is an inspirational, community walk planned to take place on Easter Monday 2016 as part of County Wexford’s 2016 Commemoration Programme. The walk will replicate the historic journeys undertaken on foot and bicycle by hundreds of Volunteers who travelled from all over County Wexford to Enniscorthy to support the 1916 Rising there. Organisers are seeking interest from individuals, groups and communities from the North, S o u t h , E a s t a n d We s t o f Enniscorthy Town to take part in the four planned synchronised walks. While exact routes are yet to be confirmed, indicative routes based on the movement of Volunteers in 1916 have been identified. These are: Bunclody/ Ballindaggin to Enniscorthy, Kilmuckridge/Blackwater to Enniscorthy, Gorey/Ferns to Enniscorthy and Raheen/ Adamstown to Enniscorthy. The organisers, Wexford artists Aileen Lambert and Michael Fortune, say that these “are not just historic informative walks; these are walks where whole communities are called upon, young and old, people of the place and visitors alike; beckoned to join in a shared experience”. It is hoped this unique project will attract interest from GAA Clubs, Schools, Community Development Groups, Men’s Shed Groups, Active Retirement Groups, Walking Groups, Scouts,

Guides, already formed 1916 Commemoration Groups as well as 1798 Pike Groups or simply anyone who would like to undertake these journeys in full or in part. Michael and Aileen are calling communities or groups to contact them in order to become involved in developing and devising the exact routes for the project. Over the course of the next few months, Aileen and Michael will present the project locally at meetings throughout the county, along the proposed routes, and recruit interested communities and groups. Trail walks, meetings etc will be undertaken during this time in order to prepare people for the journey. All ages and experiences welcome, “from the fit to the unfit, road bikes to high nellies.” The exact route and mode of transport (i.e. foot or bike) will be decided for each route once community participation is assessed and there is interest on the ground locally. All routes will be marshaled, signposted and family friendly. The walks will be broadcast live on the project website on the day of the walks, whilst live video feeds of the walks will be relayed to the town of Enniscorthy during the day in order to build anticipation of the groups’ arrival into town. To register your interest or simply find out more information, please contact: Aileen Lambert 087 7552593, Michael Fortune 087 6470247, email: aileenlambert@gmail.com n

Slaney Olympic news dublin city Marathon 2015 After months of hard training and endless miles, the wait was finally over when club members lined up, to begin, for many, their first Dublin City Marathon. First home for the club in a great time of 2.49.09 was Farmer Monaghan and the first Lady home for the club was Julie Kirwan in 3.23.33. Special mention goes to Marie Chapman who ran her 100th Marathon and to Mag Sludds who ran her 20th Marathon. Donohoe's Bar was packed to the rafters as most of the 47 Slaney Olympians who competed in the Dublin Marathon turned up to celebrate their achievement. As is tradition in the club, the Joe and Teresa Cash trophy for first female, and the John Corrigan trophy for first male were presented on the night, with Julie

Kirwan taking first lady home in a time of 3.23, just a couple of minutes outside of Marie Murphy's club record of 3.21, and Farmer Monaghan was first man home again in 2.49. Marie Chapman was presented with a trophy for her 100th marathon, where she set a PB of 3.37. A big hearty congratulations was offered to all who completed the marathon, with a special mention made for the three amigos, Dave Kehoe 2.53, Ben Hill - 2.58, and Jessie O'Connor - 2.59, with Ben and Jessie breaking the 3 hour barrier for the first time. Congratulations to Marie Chapman who took part in the N e w Yo r k M a r a t h o n o n November 1st to celebrate her 101st marathon. Marie’s first marathon was in 1999 also in New York, so this for Marie was very special. Congratulations Marie. n

Parents, mentors, members and players of the Rapparees/ starlights came together last saturday evening for a gala event at Bellefield GAA complex as the club honoured the wonderful achievements of the u-14 teams doing the double – winning both hurling and football county titles and winning the Feile and going on to represent their county in this year’s competition. The function organised by the Coiste na nOg Committee, and MC’d by Chairman Jason

for just Sheridan, was a night of celebration as Jason called on Club Chairman John Browne to say a few words to the large crowd. John said that the club were extremely proud of all that had been achieved at underage in 2015 and the level of skill and discipline shown in particular by both U-14 teams and all that he would ask of these young players is that they would remain with the club and continue to play the games of hurling and football. Jason Sheridan thanked

everyone for being there, all the sponsors and the Club Executive for all their support throughout the year and then called on clubmen and county players Liam Ryan and Kevin Foley to do the presentation of medals saying what a privilege it was to have two of our own to do the honours. Kevin Foley had a few words of encouragement for the players saying that the time passes so quickly and it was only a few short years since himself and Liam were there accepting the

same medals at U-14 level. He told the players how important it is to enjoy every moment of it as all too soon it has passed and he encouraged them to continue to train and practise their skills and he looked forward to himself and Liam playing with some of them on the county teams of the future. After the medals and refreshments everyone settled down to enjoy the wonderful entertainment provided by Paul O’Reilly and Reilly’s Men. – Maria Nolan

Caroline gets motoring opel karl review by Caroline Kidd

The Karl is Opel’s new back to basics, five door city car. Smaller than the Corsa, but without the glitz and glam of the infinitely customisable three door Adam, the Karl promises all the Opel virtues and qualities, but at a cheaper price point into the Opel range. With a starting price of just under €12,000 for a basic model, going up to €14,695 for a high specced version, Karl is certainly keenly priced. The city car market is very crowded so what does Karl bring to the table? Well for starters, Karl is a five seater, with three seats and seatbelts in the back. Some of the competition only have two seats in the back. Something else I was happy to see were winders for the rear windows. Again, some cars of this size and price have pop-out windows in the back to save money. So already Karl is looking like a more substantial car than some of its rivals if these things are important to you. The latest generation of Opel cars tend to have good quality, attractive interiors and the Karl is no different. There are a lot of hard plastics but visually it’s very appealing with bits of chrome trim, gloss black and a neat but modern look to the dials, switches and centre console. For a small car it doesn’t feel too cramped inside and a 206 litre boot is

congratulations caroline! we are delighted to be able to tell readers of the Slaney News that caroline has been accepted as a new member of the irish Motoring writers’ Association (iMwA). the iMwA consists of sixteen motoring writers who work across the online and print media in ireland, and members vote annually for irish car of the year and irish Van of the year. the winners of this year’s awards will be announced later this month, and caroline is looking forward to being part of the jury for next year’s awards.

This space not the best in class for space, but it’s not the worst either. The Karl range is very simple: there are just three trim levels to choose from (S, SC and SE) and one engine, a 1.0litre (75bhp) returning up to 63mpg. It feels nippy around town, and out on bigger roads there’s no problem maintaining cruising speeds. It’s slow enough to get there, but that’s characteristic of all these small nonturbo 1.0-litre engines, and within the city car segment it is one of the more powerful of the 1.0-litres. In town Karl feels gloriously light and agile, and out on rural roads it’s got good road-holding ability through the corners and the steering

does communicate quite well what the front wheels are doing. I certainly wouldn’t describe Karl as dull to drive. It doesn’t feel like it’s going to disintegrate at the first whiff of motorway, it feels solid and planted, and easy to control. The only issue really is quite a lot of road noise at speed. The top spec SE trim car has such luxuries as electronic climate control, Bluetooth for music streaming and handsfree calls, leather covered steering wheel, alloys, and dark tinted rear windows. Standard equipment includes electric front windows, trip computer and daytime running lights, while mid spec SC adds lane departure warning system, elec-

tric mirrors, cruise control and speed limiter, steering wheel mounted audio controls and front fog lights. The Opel Karl doesn’t make a huge style statement but this car is not about that, so if you’re looking for solid, cheap five door transport for town and city driving, and occasional motorway use, then Karl could be your man. Six Worst Rural Road Drivers

i drive a lot on rural roads, and at this stage i’ve seen it all. here are my six worst rural road drivers. have you met any of these lately? 1) Rural Road speeder This driver is always in a hurry and really needs to leave the house a bit earlier. You can easily identify this driver because they will probably come up behind your car really fast and

then sit on your back bumper to intimidate you. Or you might meet them coming in the opposite direction, speeding around a corner over the white line. 2) Monospeed Maven This driver considers themselves a safe driver and likes to maintain a steady monospeed at all times, s o m e w h e re a ro u n d 60km/h. The funny thing

is that they continue to drive at this pace through the 50km/h limit through towns and villages, which leaves me thinking that they are not such a safe driver after all. 3) Random Road user This driver is a bit unpredictable and will wobble around the road in and out over the white line, which means it’s risky to try to overtake them on the straights. They may also exhibit unpredictable speed tendencies, slowing down and speeding up randomly. To add frustration, their braking patterns can be a bit all over the place too – brake meeting an oncoming car, before a corner, in a corner, coming out of a corner and on the straight bits too. 4) Mobile Phone Fumbler This driver is the one you see driving badly and then you look again and you

see that they are holding a mobile phone to their ear, while also doing the very serious task of driving. 5) the casual Vacant This driver appears oblivious to other drivers and may stop abruptly at any point in the middle of the road to say hello to a friend, check out the neighbour’s new extension or have a gawp into the fields. 6) u AV ( u n i d e n t i f i e d Agricultural Vehicle) This driver likes to come out when everyone is on their way to work, or on their way home, and drives a very big agricultural vehicle with maybe a trailer too. It’s going very slow, no one can see around it, there are no lights, no indicators or maybe not even a number plate – and then suddenly it all grinds to a halt with no warning. – Caroline Kidd

NiC’S NeW fliCK

Nic, centre, with some of the film crew.

Local actor Nic Furlong is involved in a new film project. The film is called 'The Nest' and it is written and directed by Nic also. It’s his first time directing. The film is about a spate of armed robberies that take place in the present time in a rural town in Ireland. It could be any town but it is actually being filmed in its entirety in Co.

Wexford. When Nick and his team began scouting for locations they could not believe how much this beautiful county of ours had to offer. Nic doesn’t want to give much more away as the film is currently in production. It is due to be finished later this month and released in 2016. – Joseph Doyle

HAllOWeeN fuN There were ghostly goings-on in Enniscorthy last Saturday with people dressing up for fancydress parties. Batmans, Jokers, Freddy Kruegers, clowns, police women, Hitlers, broken dolls, z o m b i e s , s u p e r h e ro e s , Superman, Batgirls, nurses, ghosts, even Harry Potter cats,

grAMApHONe SOCieTy Awareness and appreciation of great recorded music is the raison d’etre of the Enniscorthy Gramaphone Society. The society meets every Thursday in Loreto Village, Pearse Road, 2.30pm to 5.30pm. The society was started in the early 1950s by a group of music lovers who met every Thursday night in Bennetts Hotel. Music is a great way to relieve stress, lift your mood, meet new friends, and enjoy a cup of tea and a chat. The meetings are very informal and friendly with discussions on the work of different composers. Each week a different member picks out a programme and

plays their choice of music. However I don't think X Factor or dance music is on the agenda with this group! The society also meets for lunch every few months and at Christmas their lunch involves an invited guest. T h e P re s i d e n t i s M r s Moriarty, former President is John Elliot, Treasurer is Joan Ross, Secretary is Joan Chapman. And the programme manager is Gail Copeland whose father, Dr Des Kearon, was one of the original founders of the society. Drop in to Loreto Village any Thursday afternoon to find out more. A warm welcome awaits you. – Joseph Doyle

NeW buSiNeSSeS We at the Slaney News like to see new businesses opening up and we like to see them do well. Recently two new businesses have opened in town. Dealz opened last Thursday in the Market Square in premises which contained at various times – Mace, Cindy’s Icecream Parlour, Galaxy, etc. Dealz has 30 stores nationwide and is a welcome addition to

our town. We wish them luck. The second new business is The Hill bar which has opened up under new management in what was once Miley Kehoe’s pub on Castle Hill. The Hill bar is managed by Roisin Butler and will have live music every weekend and karaoke every Friday night with Julie. We wish Roisin well. – Joseph Doyle

Dr Patricia Mulcahy, President of Institute of Technology Carlow, has welcomed the announcement last month by Minister for Public Expenditure and Reform Brendan Howlin of approval to acquire a new site for the Institute’s Wexford Campus. The new campus will be located on a 35-acre site in a prime location in Wexford Town. Since its opening in 1995, the Wexford Campus has been based at Summerhill Road and, more recently, opened its School of Art and Design on Hill Street in Wexford town. The campus offers a range of programmes from Higher Certificates to Masters Degrees in Business, Humanities, Art, Cultural Heritage and Computing. Two new degree programmes have been launched in Sustainable Farm Management and Agri-business. Currently, 850 full-time and part-time learners are studying at the campus. The development of Wexford Campus has involved close interaction with key stakeholders in the county including Wexford County

Council, Wexford Waterford Education and Training Board, Diocese of Ferns, and various agencies involved in enterprise development and education. To m E n r i g h t , C h i e f Executive of Wexford County Council, also welcomed the announcement, commenting that “The acquisition of a site for a major third-level campus development has given a strong vote of confidence in Wexford as an education hub and has ensured that Wexford will play a significant role in the progress towards a Technological University for the South East”. Cathaoirleach of Wexford County Council, Councillor Tony Dempsey joined with Mr. Enright in welcoming the Minister’s announcement of a new Wexford Campus, describing the development as “a hugely important milestone in the Council’s long-standing ambition to further develop the county’s access to third level education and one which will impact positively on the county’s future economic and social progress”. n

A Literary Feast in Enniscorthy what a wonderful literary time on the Focal calendar as two of our committee members launch their respective books… The first launch was by amateur photographer and owner of Heritage Tours Wexford, cathy keane, who launched her beautiful collection of photographs called The Making of Brooklyn in Enniscorthy. See full report on page 31. During the filming of the movie Brooklyn this enterprising Galwegian entrepreneur, now an honorary Enniscorthian or Scalder if you like, took to the sets and streets of the town to capture and record the atmosphere, the excitement and the memories of this very special time in Enniscorthy. Our second author, local lass and well known personality and one of the founding members of Focal, Carmel Harrington, launched her third book last month, Every Time A Bell Rings. Inspired by that favourite old Christmas movie A Wonderful Life with Jimmy Stewart, this latest publication from author of Beyond Graces Rainbow and The Life You Left is sure to be yet another success for the mother of two who writes beautifully from the heart with emotion and charm. Every Time A Bell Rings was launched by publishing house Harper/ Collins as an ebook on Wednesday 15th October and will be launched in paperback on 19th November and at a special event at the Riverbank House H o t e l o n S a t u rd a y 2 1 s t November. Best selling author and Fair City actress Claudia Carroll had this to say about the book: ‘A

beautiful uplifting, magical read, written with such heart and soul, this really is a rare gem of a book. Warms your heart like a mince pie and mulled wine in front of a roaring log fire… with this beautifully written gem, Carmel Harrington has done it again.’ Every Time A Bell Rings tells the story of Belle, a young woman and foster carer from Dublin who faces the hardest decision of her life this Christmas on the Ha`Penny Bridge. Full of Irish charm, magic and the warmth of the festive season this is an emotional, heartwarming story that will stay with you long after you’ve reached ‘The End’. Carmel Harrington lives with her husband Roger and children Amelia and Nate in Screen and she credits the idyllic setting as a constant source

of inspiration to her. Her first book, Beyond Grace’s Rainbow was originally selfpublished in August 2012. Grace’s story quickly became a bestseller – fast forward 12 months and Carmel joined the prestigious HarperCollins Publishing House, represented by Trace Literary Agency. Beyond Grace’s Rainbow was voted Romantic ebook of 2013 and Kindle Book of Year 2013. Her second novel The Life You Left was published in June 2013, also an ebook bestseller and earned Carmel the nickname ‘Queen of Emotional Writing’. Carmel writes emotional family dramas sharing a common theme – strong characters who find themselves in extraordinary situations. She loves to dig deep and see how they cope, as they grapple with life-changing moments.

A new book on the some of the key figures in 1916 Rising in County Wexford, who were also published writers and poets, are featured in a new book by County Wexford historian Bernard Browne. Many of the people featured in this unique take on the Rising, were based in or around Enniscorthy and many wrote for The Echo Newspaper. The book outlines the importance of literature and politics which joined forces in the early decades of the 20th century, as these men and women sought to sweep aside the past and shape the social consciousness of the Irish people. The biographical publication is laid out by people’s name for ease of reference. It is intended to help the general public know and understand the many pivotal figures and their families – many of whom still live in the area today. The book will be officially launched by the Chairman of the County Wexford 1916 Committee and former County Manager, Eddie Breen, on Thursday, 5th November at 7.15pm in Enniscorthy Library. Bernard Browne is the former Chief Executive of Comóradh ’98 and oversaw the development of the National 1798 Centre in Enniscorthy. He is a regular contributor to many journals and publications and is the author of a number of books on aspects of County Wexford history. n

The Making of Brooklyn - Book Launch A very large crowd of friends and well-wishers turned up for the launch of cathy keane’s photo book - The Making of brooklyn in enniscorthy at enniscorthy castle last month. Hosted by Focal Wexford Literary Festival who were delighted to be there to celebrate with Cathy – a member of the Focal Committee and a wonderful friend and asset to the town and Festival. Indeed, Cathy Keane, a native of Galway, has become a Scalder true and true and since coming to Enniscorthy has made a major difference to the town. Cathy Keane has taken Enniscorthy to her heart and never misses an opportunity to sell and promote it. Indeed, she has already been on RTE’s Nationwide twice and was lavish in her praise of the town, its culture and its history. Since arriving in town Cathy has established her own bus company Heritage Tours Wexford along with creating a Town Bus Tour that lasts 3 hours, now who would have thought that there were 3 hours of something to

do in Enniscorthy, but Cathy has found it and much, much, more – she has created a greater awareness of the town and what it has to offer to local and visitor alike. She is affable, well informed, passionate, enthused and above all positive and her positivity is infectious. She gathers stories and folklore and likes nothing better than recounting them to her captive bus audiences who find them both interesting and entertaining. Cathy is also an inspired photographer with an extremely keen eye for that once-off shot or that moment in time and it was this talent coupled with her desire to chronicle and record town events that led to this beautiful publication - The Making of Brooklyn in Enniscorthy. On behalf of Focal I had the pleasure of calling on Michael Bennett to say a few words as the man who was hugely instrumental in bringing Hollywood to Enniscorthy. In fact he left no stone unturned in this quest and is therefore largely responsible for all the glamour, glitz and

excitement that we are experiencing as a consquence. Michael intrigued all with his ‘behind the scenes’ stories, if you’ll pardon the pun, and thanked former Town Clerk David Minogue and present To w n M a n a g e r P a d r a i g O’Gorman for all their work and assistance. He paid tribute to Cathy and her wonderful photo book saying that if Brooklyn wins an Oscar or two this book could become a collector’s item. Cathy Keane said that she was overwhelmed with the attendance at the launch with friends coming from Galway and one very special friend coming all the way from Texas and she asked the gathering to put their hands together and give a very warm Enniscorthy welcome to Staci Holtzman. Cathy said that Enniscorthy is a truly beautiful town with so much to offer and she hoped that Brooklyn would do the same for it as The Quiet Man did for Cong and Ballykissangel did for Avoca and she could see no reason why it wouldn’t if it was

promoted and advertised properly. Cathy went on to thank Focal for their help and assistance, Liz Wildes for her expert advice, Staci Holtzman for her sponsorship, Enniscorthy Castle for the wonderful venue, Enniscorthy Municipal District Council for agreeing to purchase 100 copies of The Making of Brooklyn to be given to dignitaries and visitors at the Premiere. She had a special word for her partner, Angie Franklin, and for all her friends and family for their tremendous support and encouragement. Cathy Keane has already unearthed one town treasure – The Enniscorthy Penal Cross – this lovely publication is a second and who knows what she will come up with for her hattrick! Look out Enniscorthy! Cathy’s book is on sale at Byrne’s Bookshop and was on display beside Colm Toibin’s Brooklyn book when he visited Byrne’s recently to do book signings – how cool is that. Reaching new heights enniscorthy drama Group excelled itself last month with two outstanding productions – the donahue sisters directed by Annemarie whelan and a new play by young wexford playwright eoghan Rua Finn called come Along the Road until you stop dead brilliantly directed by Jimmy kavanagh. And the general consensus of those in attendance on thursday 16th and Friday 17th at the Presentation centre was that enniscorthy drama just gets better and better. A huge commendation for Chairman Liam Doyle and his dedicated committee who are delighted with the calibre of actor presenting, the standard of acting and directing and especially thrilled with the new local talent being unearthed in the form of Gretta Carley and Fintan Kelly – both born to be on the stage! The three women who were the Donahue Sisters – Annemarie Whelan, Gretta Carley and

Gemma Delaney are superbly cast and feed off and interact with each other in the most natural and entertaining way. Such is the ease of their performance that the audience actually forget that they are watching a production and instead feel that they are part of a Girlie night out, with the raucous humour at the start totally belieing the very dark side of this play. Excellent stuff which only half prepared the audience for the power and the magic to come. Enniscorthy Drama PRO Maria Nolan introduced playwright Eoghan Rua Finn who was in attendance on both nights as an up-and-coming talented writer and advised people to take note as she would be quite confident that we would be hearing a lot more about this young man who writes with passion and ability – a perfect combination. This play she said, Come Along the Road Until You Stop Dead, is interesting, angry, passionate, thought-provoking

and extremely well written and acted. Set in the Blackstairs this is a violent portrayal of one of the most disturbing times of our history – the Civil War, and newcomer to Enniscorthy Drama Hannah Mc Niven gives a hugely convincing performance in the difficult role of Sinead and plays superbly to Fintan Kelly's amazing portrayal of James Joseph O'Hara. Fintan is a revelation maintaining his wonderful northern accent throughout. His depiction of this brutally hard, violent character is so good it's frightening and sets Fintan Kelly up to be one of the best actors to come out of Enniscorthy in a long, long time. When Ronan P Byrne takes the stage at the beginning of this play he doesn't utter a word for at least the first four minutes but such is this actor’s stage presence coupled with his acting expertise, his facial expressions, his marvellous body movements and the wonderful way that his mind,

body and soul assume and consume the character he plays that no-one actually notices that not a word has been spoken. Ronan P Byrne is Pat Anthony Cahill with all his anger, all his regret and all his hatred – Ronan empties every ounce of himself into the tragic Cahill and delivers a performance of professional standard as Chairman Liam Doyle said in summation, ‘These actors are amateurs in name only, the sole difference being that they are not being paid.’ Young and old alike were blown away by Come Along the Road Until You Stop Dead with many leaving the centre saying how it had moved them and how inspiring the acting had been. Enniscorthy Drama you have arrived! There is no stopping us now as we take this new and exciting play on the One Act Circuit and look forward to what we know will be a positive response from audiences and adjudicators alike. Enniscorthy you are fast becoming the cultural hub of the South East. – Maria Nolan

Following in their footsteps Rte Presenter Anne doyle was in her birthplace last month retracing the journeys of the Ferns 1916 Volunteers who walked or cycled from there to enniscorthy to join with their comrades in arms during easter week. Anne was accompanied on her travels down leafy glades and old bog roads by members of Enniscorthy re-enactment group, members of the Connor family, Mick Fortune, Aileen Lambert and Seamus Rafter on this Community Walking/ Cycling Project called Backroads to the Rising. Created and developed by Mick and Aileen to be part of the 2016 Commemorations Programme in Wexford. Anne was delighted to be back on home turf and equally delighted to be promoting the project as part of a 1916 documentary to be aired on RTE on 29th November. Ferns holds a very special place in Anne Doyle’s purple and gold heart and she thoroughly enjoyed her preamble down lots of memory lanes interviewing Mick and Aileen and chatting to Seamus Rafter.

Two very special bicycles also made the journey on Tuesday – one belonging to James Gleeson who made the cycle from Gorey to Enniscorthy to join the Volunteers and the other belonging to Maire Deegan who used her bike to cycle from Askamore to the GPO in Easter week with a dispatch tied up in her bun. Mick and Aileen are working on three projects for 1916 The 1916 Song Project, Children of the Revolution and Backroads to the Rising and would love to hear from people with their own stories to tell. You can contact M i c k t h ro u g h h i s w e b s i t e www.michaelfortune.ie if you have something to contribute to any or all of these projects. Tremendous work is being done around the county to make 2016 a special year for all and well done to Mick and Aileen for their creativity and hard work and we very much look forward to seeing the fruits of their labours. And well done to Ambassador Anne Doyle who is constantly and eloquently promoting all things Wexford. – Maria Nolan
