THE SLANEY NEWS IS NOW AVAILABLE IN 230 OUTLETS!
comment In this month’s issue of the Slaney News we’re delighted to include a 2-page feature on Enniscorthy’s legendary Blackstairs Blues Festival (see pages 18-19). It’s the last of Enniscorthy’s major festivals before the winter sets in so let’s all enjoy the Blues. –––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––– Following the success of last year’s inaugural event, new Bank of Ireland branch manager in Enniscorthy, Marguerite Murphy, and her BOI team are busy organising the second Enniscorthy Enterprise Town event, with the help of a local committee consisting of Jimmy Gahan, Michael Bennett, Barrie Sutton, Eugene Doyle and Connie Doyle, which is set to take place in the I.F.A. Centre on 29th September, running from 5.30pm to 8.30pm. All are encouraged to go along and see all that Enniscorthy has to offer – 40 stands with businesses, sports clubs, cultural and social groups, etc. Admission is free and all are welcome. If you’d like to set up a stand for a group or business you’re involved in just call into Bank of Ireland and the staff there will be happy to help. Bank of Ireland looks forward to seeing as many businesses and groups as possible participating and, of course, a huge turnout from the general public to ensure the event is a huge success. – Frank Corcoran

Pet Depot now open at Duffry Gate, Enniscorthy
Husband and wife team, Joe and Susie Christian, have just opened their third Pet Depot branch, at Duffry Gate, Enniscorthy.
husband and wife team, Joe and Susie christian, have just opened their third pet depot branch, at duffry gate, Enniscorthy, in the premises formerly occupied by michael’s doyle’s well-known checkout shop. Joe and Susie opened their first Pet Depot in Gorey in 2009 and the following year opened up in Wicklow town. They’ve built up a thriving business and gained a wealth of knowledge about pets and all their requirements. That
knowledge is now available to anyone who drops into their extensive Enniscorthy store seeking expert advice from their highly trained staff. There’s convenient parking in front of the shop and the staff will always carry your heavy purchases to your car. Pet Depot stocks top brands such as Gain, Royal Canin, Hill’s Science Plan, etc. And you can also take advantage of their great promotion on Burns dog food – buy seven, get one free.
In addition to the wellknown brands, Pet Depot stocks its own brand – “Stanleys” – a superpremium and grain-free dog food. And they will be launching their “Stanley’s Primal” range soon (80% meat, 20% veg and botanicals). In addition to dog food, Pet Depot carries a large range of food products for all common, domestic pets and will soon be stocking pigeon food. A huge range of accessories is also on offer at incredible prices.

There have been various controversies with Windows 10, from issues with privacy and telemetry, to ads and forced upgrades. Following a court case, Microsoft has vowed to never force upgrade files onto users again. Windows users in Germany were particularly unimpressed when Microsoft forcibly downloaded many gigabytes of files to upgrade from Windows 7 and 8 to Windows 10. Having held out for 18 months, and losing its case twice, Microsoft has finally agreed to stop its nefarious tactics. After a lengthy battle with Germany's Baden – Würtenberg consumer rights centre, Microsoft made the announcement to avoid the continuation of legal action. A press release on the Baden – Würtenberg website reveals that Microsoft has announced it will no longer download operating system files to users' computers without their permission. Microsoft will not download install files for new operating systems to a user system’s hard disk without a user's consent. The consumer rights centre hoped for this resolution to be reached much sooner, but Microsoft's decision will please the courts and could have a bearing on how the company acts in other countries. The announcement is described as "a success for consumer rights in the digital world," and it brings to a close one of Windows' darker periods. But some people are already asking whether feature updates to Windows 10 fall under the same banner, and wondering whether these will have to be treated in the same way. Ferns Computer Services has been in business in Ferns since May 2007. Established by David Pohludek, it has a huge clientele base all over Co. Wexford and beyond.

Forty Years On! on Friday evening 11th August the Seamus Rafter Room at the Riverside park hotel was a buzz with greetings, laughter and conversation as the coláiste Bríde leaving cert class of 1977 came together forty years later to renew old friendships and giggle about old times. And giggle they certainly did as the years fell away and the large attendance was transported back to their school days and all the fun and frolics that went with them. Organisers Margot Banville Hogan, Margaret Murphy,
First day back at school, St Senan’s Enniscorthy.
Gloria Ennis, Anne Byrne and Paula McCarthy were thrilled with the response they received from the Class of `77 with past pupils turning up from all corners of the county and the country as well as two from as far afield as New York and Cannes. The evening was a tremendous success with the reminiscing and revelry going on into the early hours as girls had much to catch up on and no doubt some new and treasured memories were made during the night that will be remembered for the next forty! – Maria Nolan

Bank of Ireland’s “Enterprise Town” for Enniscorthy details of Enniscorthy’s upcoming Enterprise town event were announced at a reception in the Athenaeum on thursday 24th August. the Bank of ireland sponsored initiative is designed to showcase the many and varied business enterprises which exist in Enniscorthy and to promote new opportunities for would-be entrepreneurs. The one-day event will take place in the IFA Centre, Mill P a r k R o a d , o n F r i d a y, September 29th, and is open to any exhibitor who might wish to participate. In effect the
Enterprise Town event is a community trade fair where it is free to exhibit and free to attend and where the objective of the exercise is to generate business and to establish business networking in the community. To date Bank of Ireland has hosted more than 140 Enterprise Town events since the initiative was first launched and the response has been very positive from a commercial and networking perspective. According to Marguerite Murphy, Bank of Ireland Branch Manager in Enniscorthy, feedback from Enterprise Town events has

shown that “people connect with people and businesses that up until now they didn’t know existed”. Surprisingly, added Ms. Murphy, only 30% of local businesses have a shop front to help promote their business so the need for new ideas and new initiatives to help create awareness of what a town like Enniscorthy has to offer is very important. Bank of Ireland is helping in that process by sponsoring the Enterprise Town initiative, she said, and she hoped the event in The IFA Centre on September 29th, will act as a catalyst for similar events going forward.
Upwards of 40 stand holders will be accommodated at the Enniscorthy Enterprise Town evening which will run from 5.30pm until 8.30pm and they will be allocated on a first come, first registered basis. The evening will also feature a motivational talk on health and well-being by Karl henry of ‘Operation Transformation’ fame and a panel discussion involving local food producers, Nicholas Dunne from Killowen Foods, Eamon Crean, Greenhill Fruit Farm, Edward Hayden, celebrity chef of TV3 Fame, Pat O’Neill, O’Neill’s Dry Cured Bacon and Jean O Connell of O Connell Marketing who played

such a pivotal role in promoting the recent Rockin’ Food Festival in Enniscorthy. The Enniscorthy Enterprise event is also planned in such a way as to provide attendees with a mix of business, music and sport and throughout the evening, the commercial promotions will be interspersed with some lively music and appearances by well-known sporting personalities. Registration for participation is now open and interested parties, sports organisations or individuals who wish to register can do so by contacting marguerite j.murphy@boi.com or
Jacqueline.warren@boi.com or any member of the Bank of Ireland staff in Enniscorthy. For those who register early, Bank of Ireland will hold a digi information evening during the week prior to the event with the Bank’s Gary Maher who will help with marketing and promotion of individual businesses through the social media channels. The Enniscorthy Enterprise Town event is an ideal opportunity for local business interests to promote their products to the widest possible audience as the event in Enniscorthy on September 29th is sure to attract huge crowds. n

new figures from irish heart’s mobile health unit service show that a total of 394 people from Wexford have availed of its free blood pressure checks in its first full year of operation. this figure is made up of 170 men and 224 women who attended the unit – which is supported by Bank of ireland and medtronic – when it visited the county. Officially marking its first anniversary, Irish Heart is taking the opportunity to appeal to men, in particular, to get checked for high blood pressure. The plea follows findings from a national sample survey of attendees which showed a greater prevalence of high blood pressure in men – the silent risk factor for stroke and heart attack. In the survey of 268 attendees nationally, 41% of participants were found to have high blood pressure, with half of

For a number of years the residents of Kilagoley Terrace and the Esmonde Road have suffered the appalling affront of an unpleasant odour that permeates their residential area. Roisin Dempsey
The appreciative attendance enjoyed a magical night of musical memories at the Athenaeum in August as the lovely and very talented Roisin Dempsey accompanied by Mr. James McDermot took them all back through the years with beautiful performances of many old favourites. The exquisite set and wonderful acoustics of the much loved building provided the perfect forum for a fabulously entertaining and extremely elegant ramble down memory lane as Roisin, whose love of The Athenaeum is blatantly obvious, gave us some golden oldies such as Matchmaker, Matchmaker and
Magical Musical Memories at Athenaeum Sunrise, Sunset from Fiddler on the Roof, On the Street Where You Live and I Could Have Danced All Night from My Fair Lady, and Oh What A Beautiful Morning and People Will Say We’re In Love from Oaklahoma. Roisin not only sounded fantastic but looked stunning with her classy looks perfectly complimenting the classical repretoire, much of which had graced The Athenaeum stage down through the generations and was extremely popular with her recent audience with numbers from The Pirates of Penzance performed in 1952 and again in 1980, The Mikado, Phantom of the Opera
and The Deadwood Stage, Secret Love and The Black Hills of Dakota all from the 1995 production of Calamity Jane. Roisin’s crisp, clear vocals and range continues to delight audiences and combined with the talents of Mr. McDermot made for a very special evening indeed. The beautifully arranged and imaginative set creating the illusion of warmth and welcome making us feel that we had all been invited to a rather grand party in Roisin’s sittingroom. An exquisite trip down a well loved and most treasured musical memory lane. – Maria Nolan

Vintage bikes to take to Greenway Cyclists are being invited, for one day only, to put their carbon bikes to one side and enjoy the feeling of vintage steel, old-school gearing and the beauty of handcrafted bicycles at the Third OldVelos Vi n t a g e C l a s s i c o n t h e Waterford Greenway. The OldVelos Vintage Classic, a unique cycling event in Ireland, is open to riders on vintage bicycles and steel thoroughbreds including High Nellies, Roadsters and Racers. Leisure riders can choose between a 20 mile route on the beautifully kept Greenway routes while for sports riders who want to get their legs over some steep climbs in high gears there are 60 and 80 mile Comeragh routes. While bikes must be pre 1990, cyclists of all ages are welcome and asked to wear their vintage racing woollens or high nelly tweeds.
For spectators there will be a free vintage velo expo including racing bikes from the 1920s1980s and a special Irish interest section with memorabilia and bikes from Irish riders and manufacturers. As usual there will be the hotly contested Concours d’Elegance competition with prize categories for the best original and restored bicycles as well as cycling stalls and a lunchtime BBQ. Jean is rockin’ it in Enniscorthy Recently, I caught up with the dynamic and innovative Jean O Connell, owner of O Connell Marketing & Communications, who has become the driving force and media guru behind the town’s Rockin’ Food Festival. Jean, a true blue Kerry woman, now living in Bunclody, has been a major addition to the very hard-working Festival Committee and through her extensive contacts and mega experience in the tourism and hospitality sectors has managed to completely revamp the August event. Jean, who is married to local Bunclody man, John Gerard Murphy, is a recognised strategic planner and a seasoned and experienced sales and marketing professional and has brought all of these attributes to the festival table for the bank holiday weekend. Her energy and focus is people driven. ‘It’s all about giving the punter an experience,’she says, ‘whether that is something to do or something different to eat or drink doesn’t matter.’ And to that end she created many new events for this year’s festival including a Food Marquee with free demos and talks such as Gin Talk and Tasting, Hoptails, Chocolate Workshop, Mexican Pop Up Supper, Whiskey Food Pairing Workshop, Lazy Bank Holiday Monday Brunch, and options for kids include Pizza Making Class, Medieval Pottery Making, Medieval Shield Making, Mad Hatters Tea Party, Bricks 4 Kids, Ancient East Story Telling and

of course the crème de la crème of this year’s Festival Fringe was the visit to Enniscorthy of the stunning steam train which arrived from Dublin on Sunday 6th August. Jean has certainly taken up the brief handed to her three years ago by the ground-breaking committee to develop a large festival that incorporated Rock ‘n’ Roll, Food and the unique aspects of Enniscorthy such as Vinegar Hill and 1798 under the auspices of Ireland’s Ancient East. ‘To be fair’, Jean says, ‘there was already a viable nucleus for a great festival combining the fun of rock ‘n’ roll with the history of the town, it had the wonderful colour and action of dance and re-enactment, all it really needed was a food element and some really good marketing and that’s where I came in.’ Jean’s credentials in the marketing world leave nothing to be desired having nine years experience with the famous
Rose of Tralee Festival along with numerous food-related events for Carlton Hotels, Treacy’s Hotel, Hodson Bay Hotel, Athlone Tourism, Kerry Co. Council and Wexford Co. Council. She is a Gold Ambassador Member of the World Food Travel Association
and has won many national awards. Jean set up her own Marketing & Communications business in 2014 – O Connell Marketing – and with her team of Catherine Myers and Laura Codd she has brought her own unique brand of professionalism coupled with her extensive experience to both the business and tourism sectors of the county. This lively lass from the Kingdom is also an active member of Enniscorthy & District Chamber of Commerce and has been a key figure in the development of the Bunclody subcommittee and their 5 Year Plan. Kerry’s loss would very much seem to be Enniscorthy’s gain and perhaps one day our Rockin’ Food Fest will even rival the remarkable Rose of Tralee! – Maria Nolan
Cllr Keith Doyle (Chairman Enniscorthy Municipal District), Jackie Kenny, Alan Buckfield, Mayor of Haverford West. It is estimated that 30,000 people attended last month’s Rockin’ Food Fest – an incredible number and a 50% increase on last year’s already successful festival.

Mary Coughlan to perform in New Ross
The legendary Mary Coughlan
It has been said that Mary Coughlan combines the grief of Billie Holiday, the soul of Van Morrison and the defiance of Edith Piaf. Mary Coughlan’s music career has been a roller coaster, one hell of a ride, and this concert will reflect that. It will feature all the songs that are close to Mary’s heart and life. Mary Coughlan has often been described as the greatest female vocalist and interpreter of songs that Ireland has ever produced. She is unique in blending the whisky-blurred, smoke-seared, husky notes and laconic wit of Billie Holiday
Athenaeum’s Mixed Medley Last month The Athenaeum hosted the first of its new monthly intimate evenings of song and sound as MC Maura Flannery introduced the audience to some of Enniscorthy’s best known talents. The elegant setting of the Athenaeum’s Auditorium lent itself beautifully to the eclectic mix of wonderful sound from well known and gifted artists like Pat Donohoe, Aisling Williams and Therese Canavan Bolger along with Annie Gilpin, Noeleen Williams, Josie Flood, Tony McClean and of course the sultry tones of Maura herself adding to the speakeasy cabaret ambience of the event. Those present were treated to old favourites like the Joy of Love, Midnight Special, Careless Love, Deportees, Me and Bobby Magee, Trouble Times, Song of Songs, Ride On and Without a Song, while Therese Canavan Bolger fabulously performed some of her musical specials including My Secret Love from Calamity Jane, and Aisling Williams gave us some Vera Lynn and Patsy Cline and on request gave exquisite renditions of Danny Boy and Raglan Road. The brainchild of the charming MC and Director of the Athenaeum, Maura Flannery, who plans to host similiar evenings on a regular basis to increase usage of this iconic building at the centre of our town and to showcase some of Enniscorthy’s excellent performers. With wine, nibbles and two hours of entertainment for only €7.50 this is excellent value. Watch this space and the Athenaeum’s Facebook page and website for details of the next in the series. And don’t forget on Friday 15th September the Athenaeum will host a Vintage Coffee Morning with delectable edibles and amazing prizes and all are welcome. – Maria Nolan

and Peggy Lee and the line of deep, down and dirty blues singers back to Bessie Smith with the sardonic, bitter-sweet defiance and despair of Piaf, and Mary Coughlan delivers it all in a delicious and unapologetic Irish drawl, sceptical, rueful, mournful and melting, ardent for love, all in one voice which wraps itself equally comfortably around Cole Porter and Jerome Kern, Elvis Presley and Joy Division. Buddy Holly Rocks The Presentation Centre Anyone who was lucky enough to secure tickets for the Buddy Holly Story at The Presentation Centre last month was treated to a wonderful, eclectic experience of music, song, drama, mirth and magic in a show-stopping spectacular to rival all shows. A brilliant overall production – the vocals, the instruments, the set, the dance routines, the casting and the acting were of a professional standard and transported the hypnotic audience right back to the day when Buddy Holly and the Crickets were the new kids on the block and all set to rock. This isn’t just a show, this is an experience – almost a time travel – as the Presentation audience metamorphosed into the Apollo audience of 1957 and rocked it out standing in the aisles. The calibre of the vocalists was second to none with a captivating performance from the main man Cado (Donagh Cadogan) as Buddy Holly and
believe me he is Buddy Holly, to the extent that when the announcement was made of his tragic death at the end of the show, there were tears in many an eye in the audience. He is a mega performer, a superb singer who totally got and portrayed his character. This guy is going places. His right-hand men – Pat Murphy, Alan Kinsella and Cameron Cloke gave sterling performances in their respective roles as the Crickets with the latter proving himself to be quite the comic as well as a most talented drummer. And speaking of sterling performances, Fintan Kelly was back on stage at the Presentation confirming just how versatile his acting ability is and newcomer, Roisin Williams, was indeed a revelation as his romantic partner Vi Petty, both looking and sounding the part. She has a wonderful stage presence, her timing is spot on, her delivery clear, her accent excellent – a real Southern Belle. Well done
Roisin, I hope you are going to be a great find for Enniscorthy Drama and Enniscorthy Musical Society. And who has greater stage presence than the veteran of many an Enniscorthy show, Dick Butler, who gave a cameo performance as the Big Booper – the part was made for him with his booming voice and larger than life character. Another relative newcomer, Jacob English as Ritchie Valens, had many of the females in the audience, young and the not-so-young, mesmerised by his pulsating hips as he made La Bamba his own. And the Apollo duo of Edward and Funmi were fabulous together, complimenting each other perfectly. In fact Edward was telling me that he has done more in Ireland since he arrived here only 3 short years ago than he did in the 66 years he was in the States. Now isn’t that just fantastic and a testament to all that is happening in the arts right here in the county. Long may it last.
Cast and crew of The Buddy Holly Story
Throughout the entire show the accents remained strong and true none better than Murt Murphy as Hipockets Duncan who reminded me of every loud, fly off the handle, but goodhearted underneath it all, Texan I’ve ever seen on the big screen. The Jingle singers, Nikki Cogley, Niamh Crowhurst and Rachel Greene looked and sounded great, all three being totally at ease onstage and all three blending together to produce beautiful harmony. And indeed all members of the cast played their roles superbly making this a most entertaining and enjoyable experience for all present. Compliments and congratulations to Producer Adrienne Murphy, Director James Power and Musical Director Pat Murphy and all who were involved with this wonderful show and with all proceeds going to that most deserving cause Pieta House I think we can say that this was a winner all round. – Maria Nolan

Red Moon Creative Arts Theatre hi Folks!! Hope you've all had a great Summer! We (including a few brilliant ‘fairy’ members of our Drama classes in both Enniscorthy and Wexford) have certainly been kept busy over the last few months with a varied range of performances and engagements, but, right now, we're very happy to be focusing on the exciting weeks ahead in our after-school classes, and really looking forward to seeing you all again (and meeting some new members too) for another super fun, diverse and imaginative term of Drama and Art starting on Thursday 7th September in the Presentation Centre, Enniscorthy, from 3.30pm onwards. Yippee!! We've come up with some cool new ideas to add to the Dramatic mix, with classes that include: a facepaintingfor-stage lesson (yes, you get to test your skills on eachother, under expert guidance!), a 'how to act for camera' tutorial with renowned Wexford filmmaker/director Laura Way, 'Musical Imaginings' (where music inspires and guides your creative envisionings – then you put them into action), and 'Character Corner' (where props and costumes – and your wild imag-
inations – combine to create the most amazing creatures (be they human or otherwise!!) to include in your drama pieces – not to mention all the usual brilliant and hilarious Drama games and exercises, role play, improv, storytelling, puppets, monologues/script readings/script writing (for the maturerer folks), and much, much more! And in our Art classes we'll be getting to know some famous artists and trying out their very different styles and techniques - so plenty of fun and challenges to be had there too!! And, just in case you thought we were lazing around this Summer – here’s a little summary (hawhaw – pardon the pun! Summary / Summery!! Get it?? Oh – whatevs!) of what we’ve been occupied with all over the county in our spare time!! There were….. summer camps, workshops, professional performances of our original works for children (Princess Fiddlesticks and Lord Dweeb), a generous dash of Shakespeare (A Midsummer Night’s Dream), interactive character events (Princesses and Knights/Mad Hatter’s Tea Party etc.), children’s entertainment (puppet shows, story-telling, face
painting/balloon shaping, games/disco), a parade (Seafood Festival), music (Michael’s band headlining) and our ‘Art Corner’ (Art in the Open), Picnic in the Park entertainment, various events décor work, commissions to create, write and develop new shows/scripts for shows later in the year, set painting-design and consultation for director, Laura Way’s, professional production at the National Opera House, collaborating with the County Libraries on their Summer Stars reading initiative event, (gasp!) and loads and loads of other fun/challenging/interesting stuff we’re delighted to be involved in!! And, yes – there’s more to come (we can just about squeeze it in!) over the coming months! But enough about all that and over to you again!! We know it'll be all go as everyone settles back into their school routines (or goes to school for the first time, in some cases!), so joining us for a fun, energetic and expressive Drama/Art class is the perfect way to let off steam, have a laugh and make some friends, all while learning a lit-

Clive Barnes is a guitarist, songwriter and singer who draws influence from many disparate places and forges them into a unique style that's instantly recognizable as his own. Clive has amassed a large, loyal fan base throughout the US and Europe as a solo act and also as guitarist for legendary acts like Eric Bibb, Joe Cocker and Taj Mahal. He has toured as opening act for Jeff Beck, Alison Krauss, Gary Clark Jr, David Crosby, Dr. John, Gregg Allman, Solomon Burke, The Blind Boys Of Alabama, Seasick Steve and many many more. Led by Kenny Stafford on vocals and guitar, Wexford-born Stafford first played the Blackstairs Blues Festival in 2013 and has been a long-standing member of the Wexford music scene having fronted numerous bands from a young age as well as having performed on television and radio. Now joined by self-professed “Bluesman” Graham Moore on harmonica and complemented by the vocal harmonies of Kellie Campbell, the three regularly gig as an acoustic outfit around the southeast region. Accompanied by their rhythm section, last year saw the release of their debut original single, bouncy folk tune 'Angels Keep Ya Safe', recorded at the Orchard Recording Studio.

Licensed detection yields exciting results The excitement was palpable last month at Enniscorthy Library as Damian Sheils of Rubicon Heritage gave the very large and interested audience a detailed account of what has been discovered to date on the Vinegar Hill battle site as part of the Longest Day Archaeological Project. The Project being undertaken by Wexford County Council, Rubicon Heritage, IT Sligo, Cotswold Archaeology and Earthsound Archaeological Geophysics is destined to place Vinegar Hill at the forefront of battlefields in Ireland. Damian Sheils placed the significance and enormity of the project in context saying that the Battle of Vinegar Hill was the last stand of the United Irishmen in Ireland as well at the last major stand of the Crown Forces on this Island
and having only completed a few days excavation they have already unearthed extensive evidence of both military activity and encampment. In fact, he went on, ‘We were only on site a couple of minutes when the first bullet came up.’ Damian, formerly Military Curator at the National Museum of Ireland, has previously worked on the site of the Battle of Kinsale which he said unearthed a total of twenty-three artefacts, to date after only two and a half days o n s i t e Vi n e g a r H i l l h a s revealed over sixty lead balls in three different calibres indicative of the intensity of activity there on 21st June 1798. Damian and his team are happy that despite being so close to an urban area and despite recent developments, the Vinegar Hill Battlefield is very well preserved and the
findings to date of this licensed detection survey will attract the biggest ever media attention on an Irish battlefield site excavation. This breaking news can only be good for Vinegar Hill, Enniscorthy and Wexford according to Jacqui Hynes, another member of the Longest Day team, and she urged anyone who has stories to tell about the battle of Vinegar Hill or indeed artefacts found in that area or in the town of Enniscorthy pertaining to 1798 to contact her. Vinegar Hill has always been precious to the people of Enniscorthy. The findings of the Longest Day Project will make it even more precious still, charging each and every one of us with a duty to ensure that this most historic site, and what it may yet reveal, is protected and safeguarded and cosseted for future generations to study and enjoy. – Maria Nolan
Soccer skills in Ballymurn
Back
Ballymurn Celtic AFC held a soccer coaching camp in August in Ballymurn school grounds for the children of the area for the first time. 25 children took part in drills and the skills of soccer, and other sports, and visited Curracloe for a treasure hunt
and fun on the beach. A special thanks to Ms Maria Brophy, Principal, and the Board of Management for the use of the facilities and equipment for the camp. Thanks also to Johnny Whelan, Brody Murphy, Anto Walsh, Josh Waldron, Stevo O’Brien, Craig
and Ryan Dwyer, Charlie Doyle for giving of their time as coaches. This event was supported by the Schools Soccer Coaching Scheme, Enniscorthy, and overseen by Cllr John O'Rourke. Planning for next year has already begun. n

Stena onboard with Wexford Tourism During the summer I was given the opportunity by Stena Line to avail of their day trip from Rosslare to Fishguard to view their new and innovative initiative in
c o n j u n c t i o n w i t h Vi s i t Wexford. It is aimed at giving their passengers to Ireland a reason and a desire to stop in County Wexford and to view its stunning scenery,

avail of its many and varied attractions and hear about its extremely colourful and interesting history before heading on to other Irish destinations. Vi s i t We x f o r d w a s delighted to collaborate with Stena Line’s Jill Kelleher to provide onboard tourism information for passengers as they travel back and forth across the Irish Sea. Wexford Tourism Officer, Siobhan O`Neill, invited the various attractions in the county along with Enniscorthy Historical Re-enactment Society to embrace the offer to meet and engage with potential tourists encouraging them to stop and spend some time in County Wexford. This innovative project was scheduled to run on Wednesdays during the month of August. On my trip, Maura Bell, Manager of the Heritage Park and her lovely, interactive daughter, Anna, were ready to roll as the Stena Line sailed
from the Rosslare Port at 8am. They spent the day engaging and entertaining the many hundreds of young passengers onboard assisting them to make fairy doors, historic shields and stencils, or have their photos taken in the Visit Wexford frame. Maura and Anna also dispensed Visit Wexford leaflets detailing many of the activities available in the county to the adults on board. I also took the opportunity to hand out some Rockin’ Food Festival leaflets along with leaving many of them at both terminal buildings this side of the pond and the far side having noticed that there were no Enniscorthy leaflets available at either. Following my trip, members of Hook Lighthouse staff were scheduled on board to do their bit for the initiative and later Enniscorthy Historical Re-enactment Society, dressed as Redcoats and Rebels, were due on board to tell passengers the story of the Pike, Vinegar Hill and the 1798 Rebellion.
Maria Nolan handing out Rockin’ Food Festival brochures on board Stena Line.
Full marks to Stena Line and Wexford Tourism for coming up with this most excellent proposal, which offers a major opening to all in the county involved in the tourism industry to promote themselves and all that is County Wexford. Far too many tourists having docked at Rosslare simply drive straight through Wexford en route to other parts, this is our chance to make them stop
and enjoy our charming county. Stena Line operate day trips from Rosslare to Fishguard for as little as €6.50 on Tuesdays and €15 on Mondays, Thursdays and Sundays until October leaving Rosslare at 8am and returning at either 4.30pm or 3am. Fantastic value for a most relaxing and enjoyable day on the Irish Sea. – Maria Nolan

Browne hits out at attempts to close local rail service Fianna Fáil TD for Wexford James Browne has hit out at attempts by Irish Rail management to close the rail service between Gorey and Rosslare. D e p u t y B ro w n e h a s warned that any attempts to close the rail service is putting the future of Rosslare Europort at risk and has called on Minister for Transport Shane Ross to intervene in the situation. Deputy Browne said, “I’m shocked to read recent media reports suggesting that management at Irish Rail are considering closing the rail service between Gorey and Rosslare.
This is a vital piece of infrastructure for not only passengers but also for freight services coming to and from Rosslare Europort. Any attempts to close the service will be fiercely resisted. >/0*/ >033 “The closure of this rail line ) has come up a number of times in recent years. The issue is ;/(52 (33 7(9;0*07(5;: debated extensively each time : it arises and there is recognition that the service is vital for Wexford and for Rosslare Europort in particular. What’s most worrying is the fact that the Government has already come forward and said that enhancing Rosslare Europort is vital to ensure Ireland maintains
its connectivity to Europe postBrexit, yet now we have a proposal being put forward which would cause enormous damage to the port if it came to pass. “Minister for Transport Shane Ross needs to make a firm commitment that the Government will not only maintain the Gorey to Rosslare rail link, but also invest in it in the years ahead. The Government needs to recognise that maintaining the rail service is vital for securing the future of Rosslare Europort. The people of Wexford won’t tolerate any attempts to close this rail service,” said Deputy Browne. n

Enniscorthy retailers recognised nationally Four Co. Wexford businesses have been shortlisted in the Top 100 stores in Ireland by Retail Excellence Ireland – the largest retail industry representative organisation in the country. The four are: Tom Doyle Supplies, Camolin, flagship store for Halo Tiles & Bathrooms; Byrnes Bookstore, Enniscorthy;
Green Acres Wexford; and Dominic Smith Electrical & Home Entertainment, Gorey. The Retail Excellence Awards, which were established in 1997 to promote best practice and encourage high standards in the Irish retail industry are now the largest and most prestigious of its kind in Ireland. The awards
ceremony will take place on Saturday, November 11th, in the Malton Hotel in Killarney. Former Store of the Year winners include: TileStyle, Applegreen, The Kilkenny Shop, O’Brien’s Wines and Green Acres, Wexford. David Fitzsimons, Chief Executive of Retail Excellence, commented, “There were
almost 700 entries nationwide and as with other years we are delighted with the quality of applicants this year. The very high standard of service, customer engagement and display among Irish retailers was very evident which made selecting this year ’s Top100 particularly difficult.” n
Goods seized following failure to pay rates On 4th August 2017, a wellknown hotel in Courtown had its stock of goods including alcohol seized in an action taken by the County Sheriff on behalf of Wexford County Council. Court officers seized the goods at Courtown Hotel on foot of a Warrant of Execution, following a long-running court action by Wexford County Council against the operators of the hotel for failure to pay commercial rates. Sykes Hotel Group Limited
has been operating the hotel for some time, and the court action by the Council sought payment of commercial rates totalling more than €21,000. Following failure by the company to pay, the Council obtained the court warrant authorising seizure of goods at the premises. The goods will be auctioned by the State and the proceeds offset against the commercial rates due, with costs incurred in the action also to be deducted from the proceeds.

Wexford County Council Communications Officer, David Minogue, pointed out that the vast majority of the county’s commercial rates customers make every effort to meet their financial obligations. “The cost of unpaid rates is effectively met by those customers who do pay,” said Mr. Minogue. “The Council would be failing in its duty to these customers were it not to use all of the powers available to it to secure the collection of commercial rates. As a publicly
funded body, Wexford County Council has a duty to collect all monies due so we can continue to drive forward the development of the County and continue to provide essential services to the people of Wexford”. Current legislation provides that where the proceeds arising from seizure of goods are insufficient to meet the amount owing, further seizures may be carried out until such time as the full amount due has been collected. n

A aouple of weeks ago, I got a phone call early one Monday morning from a client saying his dog, Buddy, fell down onto a wall the previous day and wasn't himself since. So we took him in straight away, examined him and decided to admit him. We got him on a drip and kept him in for observation over night. He was very tender and tense in the abdomen but walking ok. Over the course of his time in the hospital the nurse noticed that he didn't pee at all and when this continued the next morning it was time to investigate further. We did an ultrasound scan which showed a large build up of fluid in the abdomen. Then we did an abdominal tap and on examination realised it was urine… Buddy had ruptured his bladder. He was brought immediately to theatre, operated on and sure enough the bladder had ruptured in the fall. We repaired the bladder, kept him on the drip and Buddy made a very quick recovery. We thought that was the end of it until about five days later Buddy was rushed into us with profuse bleeding and abdominal contents hanging out... He had eaten out some of his stitches and was in a critical condition. Again he was rushed to theatre, operated on and restitched. The muscle, skin layers and bladder had held perfectly. He was touch and go for a while but true to form he pulled through again, against all the odds and made a 100% recovery. His owner said he thought he was better than ever.

It was an unusual Injury in the first place but ended up a very eventful case by the end but thankfully all's well that ends well. If you suspect that your animal might have a go at their stitches post surgery, it's always better to put an Elizabethan type collar on them. When they're not with you... just in case.

A local contributor looks at life today in Enniscorthy and beyond homeleSS criSiS The homeless crisis seems to be getting to epic proportions. We hear daily reports of more and more people losing their homes through no fault of their own. The government is struggling to cope and quite correctly state that this is a problem of supply more than anything else. Supply in itself will naturally take years to sort out as houses do not grow overnight like mushrooms. There are many hurdles to overcome before a housing scheme can be built. Planning permissions, possible local objections for various reasons, infrastructure difficulties such as roads and water supply etc. take months if not years in some cases to solve. There are, however, other aspects to this housing crisis. Currently we have a situation where banks and vulture funds are seizing properties belonging to private landlords because these people have run into difficulty with the banks. One would assume that the normal process then should be that the tenant is unaffected and simply redirects their rent to the new landlord. But the reality is different. These multi-millioneuro-strong institutions literally throw the tenants out on the street and dump the problem on the government and the local author-
ities. The big question is – why are these financial institutions allowed do this. If a private individual purchased a property with a sitting tenant there would, quite rightly, be hell to pay if he or she tried to dump the occupants onto the street. Yet the big boys as usual can do as they like. We are told that there isn’t legislation to prevent the mass eviction of tenants by these people. Well why isn’t there? We have seen in the past where the Oireachtas has passed emergency legislation overnight when the powers-that-be decided that some real or imagined emergency presented itself. I well remember the farce of a few years ago when the Dáil was recalled from holidays to pass an emergency law to prevent some individual in Co. Louth from removing his money from an Irish bank to a foreign bank. They did this with less than 48 hours notice and as a matter of interest were then made fools of when it turned out that the money rightfully belonged to the man and they had to release it to him by court order. The homeless and housing crisis doesn’t seem to merit the same urgency for some reason. Emergency legislation should be passed to prevent the eviction of sitting tenants who are in good standing in properties and local

View from the Hill authorities must immediately be ordered to reopen any closed-up units in their own property portfolio. These measures will not by any means solve the problem but they may alleviate some of the pressure. Furthermore such legislation would give sitting tenants a feeling of reasonable security which many of them have not got at the moment. A further aspect of this crisis is the comment recently from the Taoiseach that the government was considering establishing an agency similar to Irish Water to deal with the housing crisis. The mind boggles at this suggestion. After the terrible debacle of Irish
Water these people have learned nothing. If this ridiculous suggestion is to be pursued we will see months of silly debate in the Dáil and the eventual defeat of such a foolish notion. In the meantime hundreds more people will lose their homes. Such an agency, if it were to be established, would of course require a highly paid C.E.O. with all the paraphernalia and consultants who go with this concept, putting millions of our euros into the pockets of the chosen few again. The established local authorities, who have admittedly been stripped of most of their former powers, are the vehicle through
which the housing crisis should be tackled. Having said all that we have to recognise that there is a small number of homeless people who cannot be helped for various reasons too complicated to deal with here. Therefore it is not automatically the fault of the authorities if a homeless person dies. Let’s hope that some of the above is being considered by government and other political parties and that they all work together on this crucial issue before it gets any worse. Political rePreSentation This is the truth , whole truth and nothing but the truth. I have the written evidence to prove it supplied to me by the individual concerned. A friend of mine contacted our five TDs in August on a particular matter of national legislation. The contact in all cases was in writing. Paul Kehoe, Michael D’Arcy, Brendan Howlin, James Browne and Mick Wallace. Within a couple of days an acknowledgement was received from Paul Kehoe and a few days later he followed up with a full reply from the relevant minister. Job done. He was requested to do something and lost no time in doing what was requested of him. Up to the time of writing this col-
umn, nothing has been heard from the other four. We will watch this one. Public Service card A debate has again arisen in relation to the Public Service Card. It escapes me as to why people object to having such a card. If you are living a normal life, possession of this card is no disadvantage and in fact should save a lot of hassle if you have to apply for any state service. Furthermore if the cards cut out multiple claims for benefit, allegedly being made, we should all welcome this. enniScorthy byPaSS Great progress is being made in relation to the Enniscorthy Bypass. Both the eastern and western sections are pushing on and it will be a great boost for the town and entire area when the construction is complete. There is of course some inconvenience to those affected by this massive operation and I’m sure heartbreak for those whose properties have been dissected by the course of the roads. To use that phrase, we are where we are, and all now look forward to the completion of this project. n We are often asked: Who is the “View from the Hill” columnist? All we can say is that the author’s surname is NOT Doyle!

OULART… Sunday, 1st october, is the date for the official opening of mise Éire – oulart's unique new monument to 1916 and War of independence. Master of Ceremonies on the day will be John Dempsey. The opening ceremony will be performed by the Chairman of Wexford County Council, Mr. John Hegarty, who will address all present and then
call on Mick and Lar de Lacy to pull the two ribbons to unveil the memorial. Mick (89) and Lar (91) donated the site for Mise Éire in proud memory of all the Oulart men who took part in the struggle. ebrates its own proud chapter in the national story that began on Oulart Hill in 1798. Lots of help will be needed so all volunteers are asked to contact any committee member. Stewarding, catering and general tidying up of all the historic sites in the village, on the Hill, and along the Jean Kennedy Smith Walk will be priorities as the big day approaches. n

ford fiesta review by Caroline Kidd
it’s fair to say that the Ford Fiesta is one of ireland’s favourite cars and is consistently a top seller here. a new Ford Fiesta has just gone on sale in ireland and Ford has reworked an already successful package to keep Fiesta competitive. In terms of styling, there is nothing much new or radical, but the new Ford Fiesta is a bit wider and longer than the car it replaces. The most obvious change is at the back where the rear light clusters are fixed horizontally and integrated into the boot lid. The changes inside the new Ford Fiesta are more obvious. The new interior feels of better quality and the new dash has an attractive design and less confusing layout. A touchscreen comes as standard on all but entry level Zetec cars and gives a more modern and streamlined look. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are now a feature for seamless compatibility with smartphones. While most rivals are switching to five door formats only, the new Fiesta bucks the trend with both a three and a five door available. The larger dimensions mean that the new Fiesta is a bit roomier inside and that’s most

noticeable in the back where there is more legroom. Boot space has not improved much and sits at an average 292 litres. In Ireland, Ford is offering the new Fiesta with an entry level 1.1-litre non-turbo petrol engine (70 or 85hp), Ford’s award-winning 1.0-litre EcoBoost turbo petrol (100hp), or a 1.5-litre TDCi diesel (85hp). be available by special order, but demand is expected to be low. A new six-speed manual transmission helps deliver CO2 emissions from 82 g/km, and fuel efficiency from 3.2 l/100 km on some models. Under the skin, the Fiesta has a new suspension and ‘Electronic Torque Vectoring Control’ to improve the handling. Cornering grip has been improved by 10% and braking distances have been
improved by 8%. The Fiesta has always been much applauded for its excellent driving dynamics but there appears to have been a real step up in comfort and refinement in this new model, while grip and road holding ability are still the best making the Fiesta a competent drive whether on motorway, in town or on country roads. I had the opportunity to drive the 1.0-litre EcoBoost

(140hp) and the 1.5-litre TDCi (120hp). The refinement and power of the diesel was impressive, while the EcoBoost is a smooth, quiet drive with plenty of power and flexibility. The new Ford Fiesta is available now in Ireland in Zetec and Titanium trim, with a more luxurious Vignale and sporty ST-Line to join before the end of 2017. Standard equipment on Zetec includes Lane-Keeping
Alert, Lane-Keeping Aid, Speed Limiter, auto lights, Bluetooth and manual air conditioning. Titanium adds 15” alloys, LED daytime running lights, front fog lights, Ford SYNC 3 DAB radio with 6.5” touchscreen, Apple CarPlay/ Android Auto, Quickclear heated windscreen, 3-spoke leather-trimmed steering wheel with audio controls and a Thatcham alarm. So how much does this all cost? Pricing starts at €16,550 for a 1.1-litre three door Zetec, and €17,150 for a five door with the same engine and spec. Titanium starts from €18,950 and is available as a five door only. Pricing for the 1.0-litre EcoBoost starts from €19,500, while the 1.5-litre diesel in the Fiesta starts from €18,935. The Fiesta is the nation’s sweetheart and there was not much Ford could do to turn fans off this icon of small car motoring. Yet even hatchback heroes like the Fiesta need a lift every now and then. With the new Fiesta, Ford has refined a familiar package. But this is an easier car to recommend now: there’s more technology on board and a much improved interior. And it’s still great fun to drive! n

festival success enniscorthy’s first Folk & ballad Festival based around tr e a c y ’s h o t e l a n d t h e templeshannon area, proved to be a huge success last month. One of the organisers, Anton Treacy, believes the Festival can grow from its humble beginnings this year (which was designed to test the waters) into a large annual event possibly like the
Blackstairs Blues Festival centred in lots of pubs and other venues around the town. The quality of the music on offer this year was top class with bands like The Druids, The Kilkennys and Blackstairs Rebels playing to large and appreciative audiences. Anton would like to thank all who supported this new initiatve in any way. – Joseph Doyle

The shop was set up in the 1970s by the late Paddy Lawler and his wife, Ann. In later years the park was run by Paddy and his son, Patrick, who took over when his father retired and when Paddy died a couple of years back Patrick took over the running of the park on his own.
Ann ran the shop from the 70s until she retired and the Lawlers sub-let the shop to a Mr. Bell from the 80s. When Mr Bell retired his daughter took up the lease of the shop and restaurant before Liz Lawler took over. Now she has a thriving shop, chipper and surf
shop with her husband. The holiday park has come on from just two caravans in the 1960s to nearly 200 nowadays. The Lawlers have plans for next year to put tennis courts where the pitch and putt course used to be. Here’s to the next 50 years! – Joseph Doyle

All-Ireland success for Edermine Ferry Rowing edermine Ferry rowing club is celebrating triple success after winning one set of gold and two sets of bronze medals at the 2017 all-ireland coastal rowing championships which were held at ballyshannon, co. donegal, last month. The club’s victories were secured in the Heritage Race section of the event on Friday which sees our rowers competing in the traditional Slaney Cots against the East Coast Skiffs and Kerry 4 Oared boats. The first crew to bring home bronze medals in the Heritage Men’s race were Ruairi Murphy, Lee Martin, Donal Harrington and Paddy Carley coxed by Maria Moulds, this race involving a multi-course turn over a distance of 1,600 metres. Club members had barely finished celebrating the first success when the crew of Katie Hempenstall, Sinéad Kinsella, Aoife Codd and Cody Byrne coxed by Ruairi Murphy scooped gold medals in the U18 Girl’s Heritage Race which was a new category introduced to the race agenda this year and all the more historic as it is the club’s first ever gold medal win at the All-Ireland Championships! The icing on the cake came later in the evening when Josh Martin, Richard O’Neill, Cathal
O’Rourke and Shane Brauders coxed by Maria Moulds also took bronze medal place in their U18 Boys Heritage Race. On Friday evening two crews also competed in both the Ladies and Men’s Celtic Longboat race rowing a distance of 4,800m in which the Ladies finished in 4th place and the Men in 6th place respectively. In Saturday’s racing in the Celtic Yawl (open) category the club were represented by seven crews competing in the Veteran Mixed, U21’s, U16’s, U18 Ladies, Pre-Vet Mixed and Veteran Ladies Heats. Conditions on the day were extremely difficult with high winds and heavy rain thrown into the mix. Two Veteran Mixed crews along with the U21 men were successful in qualifying from their heats and thereby joining the Veteran Men and U21 men in Sunday’s finals. While none of the crews reached the medal podium on finals day, these crews along with all of our crews competing over the weekend, gave a sterling performance of which they can be proud of and in the knowledge that they were competing against Ireland’s top Coastal rowers. Edermine Ferry would like to thank all the supporters who travelled to Ballyshannon with
all the medal winners together from the three races as follows: back L-R Cathal o'Rourke, Richard o'Neill, Lee Martin, Ruairi Murphy & Paddy Carley. Enniscorthy cueists on top The Michael Foley U-15 Leinster Hurling Tournament of the World! on the 30th of June 2017 in blackpool, following a recent setback by losing 8-7 to england in the european championships Final which had also been held in blackpool in February, two local cueists, adam maher and captain ben doyle, led their country and emerged victorious to be crowned World Junior 8 ball team champions 2017. this is a title which has eluded the Junior team since 2001. They began their journey beating Malta 18-7 in their first game to settle the nerves. This gamed proved to be a great
stepping stone as they went on to win 6 out of the next 7 matches to set up a semi-final clash with Malta. Malta had by now stepped up a gear in the semi-final against the Irish team which was made up of Brandon Flemming (Limerick), Lee McSharry (Leitrim), Daniel Feehan (Mayo), Cormac Kerr (Louth), and three U18 Wexford team-mates, Brandon Murphy (Gorey), Adam & Ben (Team Captain), however the luck of the Irish was behind them as they went on to win 13-8 which gave them a spot in the showdown against
adam Maher and ben Doyle
England who had already beaten the current World Champions, Australia, 13-12 in the other semi-final. After a slow start to the final, trailing 4-1, the boys showed fight and determination to win the next 2 sessions of 4-1 and in the third session 5-0 to take a strong 10-5 lead going into the final 2 sessions. Proving that this wasn’t going to be a one-sided affair, England showed their talent by winning 4 of the next 5 frames to trail 119 which set up for a nailbiting final session. Daniel Feehan secured the crucial 13th frame to earn an emphatic 13-10 win for Team Ireland and to be crowned World Junior Team Champions 2017. It was a great way to end their final year on the U-18 teams by capturing the elusive World title which has not been home to Ireland since 2002. Adam and Ben would like to thank David McQuillan who managed and supported the team for both European and World Championships. They also wish to thank their families and friends for all the support shown throughout the week and also to the people of Enniscorthy who helped during fundraisers and made it possible to achieve this. n
now in its tenth year the michael Foley u-15 hurling talent academy tournament goes from strength to strength and has evolved into one of the most prestigious underage hurling competitions in the province. Literary Matters last month i visited enniscorthy library to hear the loquacious Joe neal read from his latest book of poems the next blue note and as i have said heretofore there is nothing quite like hearing Joe do Joe. The melodious beat of his rhythmic rhyme coupled with his natural rhythm and melodious Welsh lilt blend beautifully into liquid lines of golden sound. In his new collection Joe continues his obsession with love lost and love found and the memory of love, along with his passion for nature and music. There is hardly a poem in the entire book without some musical reference. Joe loves words, he loves writing them, speaking them and thinking them and he loves stringing them together in measured harmony. I asked Joe what he does when he isn`t writing and he told me he goes fishing. I can
only guess because it allows him lots of time to think about words and how he is going to use them next and we look forward to lots more of the same coming from the lyrical Joe. Life for Wexford’s multiple award winning writer Carmel Harrington couldn’t be better. She has just finished writing The Lost Years for ITV’s television series Cold Feet which is due to be launched in Manchester this September and will be back on our screens in the autumn, her latest and fifth novel The Woman at 72 Drury Lane has been on the bestseller list for weeks and now she has signed a new two-book deal with HarperCollins. When I spoke with Carmel she was so excited that all this is happening for her and said that even though she has to pinch herself every so often to make sure it is all real, it has also been the culmination of a lot of

Get an earful of this… exhibition at Wexford arts centre: hammer | anvil | StirruP curated by richard carr in association with opengorey including works by david beattie, richard carr, edgardo rudnitzky, John Wynne 4th Sept – 7th oct 2017 HAMMER | ANVIL | STIRRUP presents the work of a key group of Irish and International artists whose current practices evoke a vitality and freshness in their engagement with concerns surrounding sound related artwork; from composition, physics and sculpture to noise, acousmatics and listening. Occupying both gallery spaces at Wexford Arts Centre, HAMMER | ANVIL | STIRRUP showcases the work of David Beattie [Ireland], Richard
Edgardo Rudnitzky: ‘vanishing Music’
C a r r [ I re l a n d ] , E d g a rd o Rudnitzky [Argentina] and John Wynne [UK]. While each artist's work remains specific to their own motivations and impulses, they come together in this exhibition to enquire into notions of listening as a critical practice while embracing the curatorial implications of exhibiting a number of ‘sound works’ within a gallery context; noise, interference and conflicting autonomies.
Enniscorthy Library
HAMMER | ANVIL | STIRRUP takes its name from the three smallest bones in the human body. Found in the middle ear; these bones perform as an interface between the inner and outer sonorous worlds. In a constant state of simultaneous reception and production, the Hammer, Anvil and Stirrup exist as both independent entities as well as an interconnected sonic system. Working on this premise, the exhibition aims to bring to the fore, enquiries into the practice of listening within the development of sound related art work and when exhibited, who, what or where does the sound belong. Through the combination of these works, the exhibition itself aims to act as a similar interface, generating its own internal logic and inviting you to enter its space and become entangled in the world around you. n
