comment , ENNISCORTHY LOCAL ELECTION On average, over the years, statistics show that 30% of councillors change with each election. So some changes in the makeup of Enniscorthy Municipal District Council were to be expected at the recent Local Elections, but very few foresaw the dramatic changes that did occur. The loss of three of the most senior and experienced members – Keith Doyle, Paddy Kavanagh and Johnny Mythen, is a sad day for all of us who have seen at first hand the huge contribution and commitment to this town and district all three have made over many years. We wish the three new members, Municipal District poll-topper, A i d a n B r o w n e , CllrEnniscorthy Kathleen Codd-Nolan, at the Flood Defence Cathal Byrne and Exhibition launch with Ministers Kevin ‘Boxer’ Moran and Paul Kehoe. Jackser Owens well in their new roles – they have big shoes to fill! See pages 6 and 13 for more details on this story.

View from the Hill

A local contributor looks at life today in Enniscorthy and beyond

29 May 2019

www.slaneynews.com ELECTIONS Looking back at my column of last month referring to the then forthcoming local elections I can claim some credit. Despite it being a full month ahead I predicted a council. On a couple of counts I was wrong. I had predicted that it would take a political earthquake to shift Johnny Mythen and that Paddy Kavanagh would get the last seat after a struggle. Things worked out differently with both failing to be elected. It was almost a foregone conclusion that Keith Doyle would lose out once the party took the decision to nominate Aidan Browne. That I had predicted. In fairness I had also stated that Cathal Byrne could pick up a young vote from across the spectrum, which he obviously did, and that Jackser Owens could

NORMANS SET TO TAKE ENNISCORTHY THIS JUNE BANK HOLIDAY WEEKEND

not be ruled out. The biggest surprise of the election has to be the defeat of Johnny Mythen. Here is an outgoing councillor with a good work record, a permanent office in the town, who only missed the Dáil by 32 votes a few years ago, being booted out of office by the public. Questions will be asked within Sinn Fein as to why its vote collapsed, not only in Wexford, but across the country. Many Sinn Fein councillors lost their seats so it was not some inexplicable local event which saw the demise of Johnny’s political career. The harsh truth is that the party has lost its way under the leadership of Mary Lou McDonald. There is far too much emphasis on matters such as LGBT rights, same sex

marriage, and the so-called equality agenda and not enough action from the party on the bread and butter issues which face the majority of people today. While the above matters are important they should not be put before the questions such as the problems in the health service, housing crisis, pending Brexit disaster and so on. All we hear on those issues is that the party is against everything and anything which is put forward by others. The time has come for Sinn Fein to become more constructive on the day-today matters which concern people. If they fail to do that many of their present TDs will go the way of their councillors in the next general election. The defeat of Keith Doyle seems to be a self-inflicted

wound by Fianna Fail. It appears grossly unfair to treat an outgoing councillor in the manner Keith was by his own party. It was clear and obvious to everyone that there was no way whatever that Fianna Fail would get three out of six seats in the present climate. Keith’s experience will be missed and there will be a big expectation of delivery from the Brownes who now clearly dominate all Fianna Fail public representation in the Enniscorthy town area. Let’s hope that they can deliver. Paddy Kavanagh was pushed out by the boundary changes and also by the arrival of the new man, Cathal Byrne. Paddy will be missed as he was a straight-talking public representative and never hid behind political correctness. The return of Jackser

Owens is to be welcomed. One thing about Jackser is that he is the easiest of people to contact. He always had a high visibility around town and never objects to being stopped in the street to be asked a question or given a complaint. No doubt he will continue this policy for the next five years. All of the above being said it has to be accepted that the people have spoken. They have given their verdict, for better or worse. We wish all those elected the best of luck in the difficult times ahead with the task that they have volunteered to do. Any observations or comments on this column feel free to email: viewcolumn@gmail.com n

Flood Defence – final chance to view

The heritage town of Enniscorthy is set for a Norman invasion this June bank holiday weekend, however, instead of battles there are Storytelling sessions on the Enniscorthy Castle rooftop, Norman Shield Making, a Norman Living History Camp and Knights and Fairytales on offer as part of the annual Strawberry, Street Rhythms & Roots Festival 2019. The Norman themed events are part of the year-long programme of events taking place in Co. Wexford marking the 850th anniversary of the arrival of the Normans to Ireland on the shores of Wexford. During the June bank holiday weekend, visitors to the heritage town of Enniscorthy will have an opportunity to enjoy a variety of fun-filled Norman themed events for all of the family. To open the festival weekend on Friday evening May 31st, Norman Knights in full attire will frequent the town and join the annual Strawberry Fair/ Street Rhythms and Roots Festival opening parade at 7.00pm from the Promenade to the Market Square. On Saturday, June 1st, guided ‘Little Norman Shield Making workshops’ will be on offer at 1 pm and 3 pm. Norman tales will be on offer on the castle rooftop where the sharing of legends from Norman times will be shared at 2 pm and at 4 pm. Also on Saturday, June 1st, at the Norman Enniscorthy Castle, a Norman living history camp is set to feature, as ‘Keeping Up with the Normans’ will take over the castle grounds. Norman re-enactors will showcase Norman weaponry and share insights to the Norman way of life at the free-living history camp from noon to 5.00pm. The camp will then move to Abbey Square and will open from noon to 5 pm for visitors on Sunday. Back at Enniscorthy Castle on Sunday, June 2nd, families can come and meet the characters from their favourite fairytale books featuring as Knights and Fairytales on offer at Enniscorthy Castle from 1-5pm. The Norman themed events all take place as part of the Strawberry Fair / Street Rhythms and Roots Festival on the June Bank Holiday weekend, running from 29th of May to 2nd June in Enniscorthy. It’s the 52nd year of the Strawberry Fair.

Local politicians at the Flood Defence exhibition launch with Minister Kevin ‘Boxer’ Moran and Enniscorthy Chamber President, Maree Lyng.

the final public exhibition of the enniscorthy Flood defence scheme opened on Friday 17th may 2019 in enniscorthy library with the minister for opW, Kevin boxer moran, assuring all present that the €44m (plus Vat) earmarked for the scheme is absolutely ringfenced, a point reiterated by minister paul Kehoe who stated that Finance

minister, paschal donohoe, is fully behind the scheme and the funding is 100% assured. this is reassuring for the owners of the 60 residential and 162 commercial properties which will be protected by the scheme. The scheme includes river channel widening, river deepening, bridge construction and removal, new traffic manage-

OPENING OF ORCHARD PEACE PARK

TOWN TALK

WITH CLLR KEITH DOYLE OUTGOING MEMBER OF ENNISCORTHY MUNICIPAL DISTRICT COUNCIL AND OUTGOING CHAIRMAN OF WEXFORD COUNTY COUNCIL Right: Official Opening of Castle Gardens Memory Care Centre L-R: Senior Carer Liam, Staff Nurse Jinu, Director of Care Services Sue Shortt, Carer Nicole, Social Care Practitioner Mags, Carer Caroline, Director of Nursing Josepha Gladney, Minister Paul Kehoe TD, Clinical Nurse Manager Ericka, Executive Chairman of Mowlam Healthcare Pat Shanahan, Head of Business Development Joe Hanrahan and Catherine Atkinson, Administrator Castle Gardens Nursing Home. Below: Director of Nursing Josepha Gladney, Joe Hanrahan, Head of Business Development Mowlam Healthcare, Minister Paul Kehoe TD, Pat Shanahan, Executive Chairman Mowlam Healthcare, Social Care Practitioner Mags and Healthcare Assistant Caroline.

As outgoing Chairman of Wexford County Council and outgoing member of Enniscorthy Municipal District Council (formerly Enniscorthy Town Council) I was fortunate to be in a position to drive a lot of positive changes happening in Enniscorthy. I am delighted to have the opportunity afforded by this monthly column to share with you some information about these developments. In the last few issues I covered the work being done as regards industry, jobs, recreational facilities, infrastructure, housing, etc and this month I want to focus on the recent opening of the new Orchard Peace Park in town. As outgoing Chairman of Wexford County Council, and a proud Enniscorthy man, I want to say a sincere thanks to everyone for their support in getting this wonderful amenity park delivered for the town. The site has had a long association with the people of Enniscorthy, as it was where the

former Presentation Nuns were based for over 175 years. Enniscorthy Town Council bade an emotional farewell to the nuns at a reception in 2001 honouring the contribution of the Presentation Nuns to education and the wider community. Their legacy continues in the town with the Presentation Nuns cemetery located in the upper part of the new park. Indeed it is the intention to launch a plaque commemorating the nuns’ graveyard later this summer. The entrance to the new park from the Convent Road hosts the multi-use Presentation Arts Centre, situated on the site of the former Presentation Convent. The building retains the wonderful features of the former chapel building including the original stained-glass windows and timber ceiling creating a unique theatre with great acoustics and atmosphere. The Council will continue to work with Wexford Arts Centre to utilise the park as an outdoor performance space for poetry readings, music and other cultural initiatives. Wexford

County Council wants the park to be a people’s park with a diverse range of activities particularly in its summer programme. The provision of this amenity space, adjacent to St. Aidan’s primary school, provides a natural outdoor play area with the school having its own entrance to the park. Theodore Roosevelt said that, “The nation behaves well if it treats its natural resources as assets which it must turn over to the next generation increased and not impaired in

value.” I am delighted that the design of the park has been mindful of the local ecology to provide an educational resource for children and an area for natural outdoor play.

provide us with an opportunity to keep in touch with nature and the outdoors, and research illustrates the proven positive health and wellbeing impact of such initiatives.

The creation of the insect bug hotel and extensive planting reminds us of the impact of climate change and the need to focus on our biodiversity. We all have a duty to protect our natural world including insects such as bees that pollinate and maintain our eco systems. Parks such as this

It is important that we continue to invest in our amenity and social infrastructure to ensure that, together with the major capital investment proposals, Enniscorthy will be transformed and prepared for its next phase, as a modern, vibrant, beautiful historic town for the future, for both its citizens and visitors. n

Local Election brings major changes the big talking point in enniscorthy following the recent local elections was the loss of three of the most senior and experienced members of enniscorthy municipal district and Wexford county council – Keith doyle, paddy Kavanagh and Johnny mythen, who have all made a huge contribution to enniscorthy, and co. Wexford generally, over many years. They have been replaced by two new faces representing a younger generation – aidan

browne (Fianna Fail) and cathal byrne (Fine Gael), and by Jackser owens – no stranger to the Council chamber having previously served before and who secured almost 1,000 votes on the First Count – a remarkable achievement. We wish them all the best of luck. In an era when women are still hugely under-represented in local politics, Enniscorthy returned two prominent sitting councillors – Kathleen codd nolan (Fine Gael) who topped the poll, and barbara-anne

My first priority always was serving the people of Enniscorthy and the county. I want to thank my family, friends, supporters, and the many officials I worked with over the years. And to all who came out to vote (those who voted for me and those who didn’t) I really appreciate you taking the time and effort to do so. Thanks again.

A few words from Johnny Mythen... Firstly I would like to thank all the people who voted for me in the local elections. It was a privilege and honour to serve you as best I could. Secondly, I would like to thank my election team for all the hard work during the last couple of months. In conclusion, I would like to wish the incoming Council every success and to thank the many friends I have made on my political journey. I especially want to pay tribute to my family for supporting me during the good times and the bad. I also look forward to challenging for a seat in the next general election. Again thank you all.

FIRST COUNT - ENNISCORTHY ELECTORAL AREA:

A few words from Keith Doyle... After 25 years of continuous service to the people of Enniscorthy and Co. Wexford, I find myself no longer an elected public representative. Eddie Kelly, on his retirement after two decades in the position. The evening, and indeed the two-day Conference, was a huge success and a cause for celebration with presentations made to Eddie by his grandchildren and by President of the Association, Joe Cunningham, and incoming Secretary, Joe McGill, in recognition of his trojan work and magnificent contribution to the Association. – Maria Nolan

Enniscorthy’s colourful carnival – June bank holiday weekend Pic: Maria Nolan.

This year’s Strawberry Princesses with reigning Strawberry Queen, Ciara Byrne, and Cllr Paddy Kavanagh. See more details on page 22.

If the colour, variety, pace, beauty and diversity we saw at the Strawberry Fai r/ Street Rhythms and Roots Launch at Treacy’s D Bar on Tuesday 14th May is any indicator, then we are in for a feast of a festival in Enniscorthy this June Bank Holiday weekend. Strongbow was joined by Dorothy and friends from Oz, along with Norman Knights, Rock n Roll Dancers, stunning Princesses and members of Martina Leacy’s School of Dance as Councillor Paddy Kavanagh, deputising for Chairman of Enniscorthy Municipal District Willie Kavanagh, launched the 52nd Enniscorthy Festival. MC extraordinaire and Chairman of the Festival Committee, Jimmy Gahan, told the packed D Bar that this was going to be a full-on festival heralded by the Strawberry Ball at the Riverside Park Hotel on 29th May which is fast becoming the event of the Enniscorthy summer season. On Thursday, 30th May, Enniscorthy Drama will perform the much-liked Pub

L-R: Roisin Williams, Roisin Boyd (Diageo, sponsors) Maria Nolan at the Strawberry Fair / Street Rhythms & Roots Festival Launch.

Theatre at Holohan’s Pub, Slaney Place. On Friday, 31st May, a Reception will be hosted at Enniscorthy Castle where well known local lass, Xpose Stylist and Fashion Blogger Laura Mullett, will officially open the 52nd Festival following which guests will be invited to join the Carnival Parade from the Prom to Market Square. The colourful Mardi Gras style procession will include Normans, Dance Acts, Street Performers, Disney Characters, Drummers and Local Groups and will be piped all the way to Market Square for a Kiddies Disco, Introduction of the 2019 Princesses with Liam Sharkey and Laura Mullett, followed by entertainment from the very popular Celtic Roots. The Strawberry Roots Trail will also kick into action in 8 well known Enniscorthy establishments on Friday 31st including Toss Kavanaghs, T. Doyles, Stamps, Popovicis, Rackards, Holohans, Treacys Hotel and Alba Restaurant – all these gigs are free – now how is that for

fantastic entertainment. On Saturday, 1st June, the traditional Strawberry Fair venue of Market Square will come alive early with an Open Air Lifestyle Fitness Session with Alan Wilson and the Strawberry Princesses. Market Square will be a Kiddies Paradise all day Saturday with Face Painting, Balloon Modelling, Baby Bop and Disney Characters, Hip Hop, Latin, Cha Cha and Irish Dancing plus a lotta, lotta fun and games. Enniscorthy Castle will host children’s workshops with a Norman twist for the year that’s in it – Norman Shields and Norman Tales and Enniscorthy Historical Re-enactment Society will look the part as they perform Keeping Up With The Normans. The Presentation Centre will be a kaleidoscope of colour on Saturday as Africa Day celebrations get underway with music, dance, art, food and the complex Ethiopian Coffee Making Ceremony. On the Bandstand on Saturday evening, the Market Square audience will be treated to Blind Date and Interviews with the 2019 Princesses. Follow the Strawberry Roots Trail on Saturday in 12 different Enniscorthy establishments across the town with top class free entertainment including Folk/Country/ Swamp Roots/ American Blues/Bluegrass and of course good old Rock n Roll. I would challenge anyone to say there isn’t something to cater for every musical taste in this most comprehensive and varied programme of entertainment.

On Sunday 2nd June prepare to have your tastebuds assaulted at Abbey Square – the venue for the mouthwatering All Ireland Farmers Market – sample the succulence of excellent food produce from all over Ireland. Ain’t Misbehavin will be jazzing it up at Market Square from 1pm while over at Enniscorthy Castle the unusual pairing of Dorothy & Strongbow will be following the Yellow Brick Road trying to find their way home. Castle Street is the place to be if you want to ride a Buckin Bronco or test your strength against Sumo Wrestlers and Gladiators. Later at Market Square you can experience a little bit of magic with Fred the Party Professor or enjoy the colour, beauty and movement of national and international dancers from a variety of ethnic groups. The pièce de résistance will of course be the Crowning of Strawberry Queen 2019 at Market Square at 7pm followed by Creedance Clearwater Revival music on the Bandstand. And the 52nd Festival will rock to a close with the fabulous Jivecats at the IFA Centre and almost 20 free gigs on the Strawberry Roots Trail. As Strongbow, aka Richie Cotter, put it, ‘The Normans rocked these shores 850 years ago, prepare to be rocked again this June Bank Holiday weekend at the 52nd Enniscorthy Strawberry Fair / Street Rhythms and Roots Festival.’ – Maria Nolan

The legendary Don Baker comes to Wexford The Don Baker band will be performing in Wexford Arts Centre on Saturday 15th June. Born and bred in Dublin, Don Baker first learned to play harmonica as a young lad in hospital recovering from a bout of TB. While convalescing, unable to go out like the other boys of his age, he immersed himself in The Blues and most especially The Blues Harmonica listening to the recordings of Sonny Boy Williamson and Howlin’ Wolf.

Fifty years on and Don is still immersed, still listening, still performing to the songs of Blues legends and adding to the Blues canon with songs and compositions of his own. Indeed his own songs have been recorded by scores of other artists including Sinead O’Connor, Charlie McCoy, Finbar Furey, Declan O’Rourke and Liam O’Maonlai. He has released fifteen albums and shared stages with Tom Jones, Sinead O’Connor and Van Morrison.

As an actor Don played opposite three-time Oscar Winner Daniel Day-Lewis in “In the Name of the Father” and on television he portrayed gangster Thomas Flynn in RTÉs “Fair City”. But it is on stage, immersed in The Blues, that Bono’s favourite harmonica player really comes to life. Don is foremost a true entertainer. Don’s new album, covering 40 years of his recording career, entitled “Don Baker”, is being released around now. ■

Strawberry Fair / Street MEET THE STRAWBERRY PRINCESSES JOY QUIGLEY

LISA CROSBIE

My name is Joy Quigley – Joy by name, Joy by nature! I’m 23 years old and I’m from Ferns, Co. Wexford. I’m currently working as a Receptionist in Treacys Hotel, Enniscorthy. A huge passion of mine is education – I’ve completed a 4-year honours degree in Sports Science. I then continued in order to get my Certification in Personal Training and Nutrition. I also have a certification in TEFL (Teaching English as a Foreign Language) which allows me to teach abroad. More recently I have been offered a Masters from TUD, which I am beginning in September in Sports Performance. As the majority of my education is sports related, it also tells you I absolutely love sports, fitness and staying active!

My name is Lisa Crosbie, I am 23 and I’m from Courtnacuddy, Enniscorthy. I graduated last year from Waterford Institute of Technology with a First Class Honours degree in Business with Economics and Finance. I am currently half way through my Masters in Post Primary Education with Hibernia College while working full time as a Depository Analyst with Indos Financial, my kind sponsors. I play football with Davidstown Courtnacuddy and I have a keen passion for baking and make-up. I would like to become the 2019 Strawberry Queen as I would like to be a role model for younger girls in the town and around Wexford. In a society that is obsessed with how many likes your photo has or how many followers you have on Instagram, girls are under increasing pressure to look and act a certain way and I want to show them that they shouldn’t allow fear of being judged and feelings of insecurity to hold them back and that it is enough to just be themselves.

ABIGAIL GORDON My name is Abigail Gordon. I am a psychology student and I also work in a local ICT business. I am sponsored by the wonderful Meraki Hair by Sarah, a local business which has blossomed in the heart of the town over the past two years. As a local to Enniscorthy town, I have grown up with the highlight of my childhood summer being the Strawberry Fair. I have always been in awe of the Strawberry Queen and have always hoped to follow in her footsteps one day. I would love to be Strawberry Queen and to take part in opportunities to promote and represent our beautiful town.

DANIELLE MAHER Hi, my name is Danielle Maher, I am 26 years old and from Oylegate. I work as a preschool room leader in Bright Beginnings, Oylegate. I am sponsored by Bright Beginnings Creche and Preschool. We are a childcare service providing both preschool and full daycare for children aged between 6 months and 12 years in two locations – Oylegate and Castlebridge. I am proud to be representing Bright Beginnings and I am thankful to them for giving me this opportunity. I would love to be Strawberry Queen as it would give me a chance to represent my sponsor and my town in an amazing way. I would find it a great honour and I’d be proud to join a long list of wonderful women who have worn the crown for over 50 years.

SINEAD KEARNS My name is Sinead kearns, and my sponsor is Alan Wilson, Lifestyle Fitness. I would like to be Strawberry Queen because I think that it would be a fantastic opportunity to be a part of lots of fun events and being a part of future plans, it is a great way to be a role model for many other young girls which is also very satisfying. I enjoy meeting new people. I understand when becoming queen you are exposed to lots of situations where you have to meet others and be involved in new tasks which I would enjoy a lot. Also a great plus is that you can dress up all the time. A princess always looks great so it’s an excuse to throw on your best frock – haha. Thank you very much for taking the time to read this.

CEILI BREEN Well my name is Ceili Breen, I’m 18 years old and am currently attending my last year in Coláiste Bríde. I have a very creative personality as I have a great love for art and music! My sponsor is Enniscorthy District Chamber. I would love to be Strawberry Queen as I feel like I would be a great Queen because I am different to most as my hobbies are kind of unusual to others, and I’m extremely friendly and caring and would be absolutely honoured with the title.

TRIONA MOONEY

TESSA CROSBIE

My name is Triona Mooney. I am 19 years old and live in Adamstown. I am a Radiography student in UCD. I am a very active, outgoing, bubbly girl. I love taking part in different activities and if there is a car leaving the house to go somewhere I am usually in it. My main hobbies include athletics and playing my flute in which I have completed all my grades, and have travelled abroad playing it in orchestras. My sponsor this year is the Wexford Fruit Growers. I would berry like to be Strawberry Queen 2019 because I grew up going to the Strawberry Festival, it creates a good buzz and positive vibes around the town. I would become a role model to young girls and hopefully encourage them to enter next year to be a Strawberry Princess and try new things. I love strawberries so much that I was convinced when I was younger that's why my hair colour was 'strawberry blonde'. And to be crowned queen of the strawberries would be a privilege because is it really summer in Wexford without strawberries?

My name is Tessa Crosbie and I am being sponsored by Colin Levingston of the Community Workshop in Enniscorthy. I think I should be Strawberry Queen because I have a very positive outlook on life. I think that it is every little girl’s dream to become a queen and I could finally live that fantasy to its fulfilment by making people smile and making a difference in all aspects of the community.

MEGAN DOBBS My name is Megan Dobbs, I am twenty years old and I was born and raised in Enniscorthy. I am a creative, caring, optimistic person who thrives on learning and experiencing new things, but not when it comes to food. Currently, I am studying psychiatric nursing in WIT. I chose this course as I want to make a difference in people’s lives. Although it is a very demanding and challenging career I am extremely happy that I have decided to become a nurse. I also spend time working in the community providing homecare to the elderly through my sponsor KarePlus. I am an avid cellist and have travelled to several European countries with the Wexford Youth Orchestra and the EVC Orchestra. Since I was a young girl coming to the Strawberry Festival dancing to Liam Sharkey’s tunes in the Square, I have always looked up to the previous princesses so I feel honoured to be amongst this year's group of princesses and to be crowned Strawberry Queen 2019 would be an amazing achievement.

CIARA O’CONNOR My name is Ciara O’Connor and I’m from Ballymurn. I’m doing a masters in Maynooth University in accounting. I’m representing Wheelock Fruits. I have worked with them for many years and it’s a pleasure for me to represent them this year as they have been fantastic employers and I’ve always enjoyed my time with them.

ROISIN O’BRIEN My name is Roisin O’Brien and I am representing the Holy Grail in Enniscorthy. The Holy Grail is situated right in the heart of Enniscorthy, in the Market Square. If the smell of Biju's famous Indian curry from the restaurant isn't enough to entice you to come in, there is something else to suit all tastebuds, from a hearty Sunday Lunch, Italian pasta dishes and a lighter lunch menu. All groups are catered for, from small groups to larger functions, including weddings and parties of all description. People come from far and wide for Biju's amazing cuisine, including visits from regular customers who travel from Waterford and Dublin among others! I have worked with Biju for the past 4 years part-time as I am completing my degree in pharmaceutical science in Waterford Institute of Technology. Currently, I also work in Research and Development, as an analytical scientist, in the contact lens manufacturer Bausch and Lomb, Waterford. I would like to win Strawberry Queen to be an ambassador for Enniscorthy and County Wexford, as I know how much the area has to offer with regard to tourism and the people who live here, which I think can be overlooked in favour of the larger towns and cities around. I also think it is important to be a representative as a young woman pursuing a STEM career. There are not enough women in the science and technology industries, and I would like to encourage young girls to consider these extremely important and rewarding career paths.

Wexford PPN targets community wellbeing We x f o r d P P N ( P u b l i c Participation Network) is a collective of community, voluntary, social inclusion and environmental groups across County Wexford. Established in 2014, the PPN, as an independent network, provides the community voice on Wexford County Council committees and other committees across Wexford. It also provides regular information to members with opportunities, resources etc in addition to offering training and capacity-building to member groups. Currently Wexford PPN has 352 member groups spread across the county. The organisation is run by member volunteers with the support of one full-time employee. Wexford PPN is delighted to be rolling out a new National Initiative on Community Wellbeing. “Our wellbeing is affected by many things; the econ-

omy, the environment, services etc,” explained Annette Dupuy, Wexford PPN Support Officer, “and the wellbeing of the community affects everyone within it. We really want to hear from the groups and organisations on the ground to find out what is important to them – this will be used to develop our Community

Vision.” The PPN hosted a series of five workshops across County Wexford in May to start this important conversation. Groups are also able to feed in online about what we need for the wellbeing of the community of County Wexford. This Community Vision, developed in consultation with

communities on the ground, will be used to influence policy and guide the work of the PPN in working towards achieving the community’s goals and help County Wexford to be as great as it can be for all us and for the many generations that follow ours. Under this programme Wexford PPN and the other 30 PPNs in the country will look at community wellbeing under the same headings; social and community development; environment and sustainability; work, economy and resources; health; values, culture and meaning; and participation, democracy and good governance. By using these six headings across all the country, one will be able to see how Co. Wexford compares to other areas in the country. Membership of Wexford PPN is free and groups can join at any time. Roban Financial hosts successful Celebrating 5 years of pensions event in Enniscorthy Local Enterprise Offices Enniscorthy-based Roban Financial held a hugely successful Auto Enrolment Breakfast Briefing on 16th  May in the Riverside Park Hotel, in conjunction with Enniscorthy Chamber and Zurich Life. The seminar was well attended with lots of interaction between the audience and the guest speakers who included Michelle Leacy and Niall Fitzgerald of Zurich Life. In summary the main take away points of the Seminar were as follows: Niall highlighted that the next four years will likely see massive change in employment law and pension practices. The pension landscape will change substantially. A recent Pensions Roadmap published by the Government signalled the following: – The introduction of an auto enrolment retirement scheme in 2022, with a starting contribution rate of 1% of gross salary rising to 6% in year 6 by both employee and employer.

Myles Roban

The removal of mandatory retirement ages. – The possible lowering of attractive incentives to, in particular, business owners, in wealth management through pension funding. Niall also spoke of the responsibilities of acting as Trustee of a Pension Scheme and the need to be aware of the legal responsibilities and alternative trustee options here. Michelle’s presentation focused on the investment of

pension funds and one particular slide showing the impact of starting a pension (even at a low contribution rate) at a young age really resonated with the audience and is actually in itself a powerful message for the benefits of auto enrolment. Myles Roban spoke of the importance of pension planning and retirement planning. A pension in itself is invaluable but it needs to regularly reviewed and managed particularly in the years close to retirement. All presenters spoke of the importance of preparing for auto enrolment now by establishing a Pension Scheme for employees sooner rather than later. Roban Financial would like to thank Jimmy Gahan and Maree Lyng and all the support staff of Enniscorthy Chamber for their assistance and also the Riverside Park Hotel for their expert service at the event. If you have any questions on any aspect of the seminar, please contact Roban Financial at 053-9233640. n

Since the Local Enterprise Offices (LEOs) were established in 2014 they have supported the creation of over 18,600 jobs nationwide with 144,830 entrepreneurs and business people trained in a range of skills over the five years. The figures were announced by Heather Humphreys TD, Minister for Business, Enterprise and Innovation and Pat Breen T D , M i n i s t e r f o r Tr a d e , Employment, Business, EU Digital Single Market and Data Protection at an event in Russborough House in Wicklow to celebrate five years of the Local Enterprise Offices. Since 2014 the Local Enterprise Offices have approved and contributed funding to over 5,000 business and entrepreneurial projects. The LEOs have distributed €81.5million worth of direct financial assistance to small businesses and entrepreneurs, stimulating job creation in communities across the country. In those 5 years, 40,577 people have received mentoring support through their LEO, while over 17,500 have taken a Start Your Own Business course. Minister Heather Humphreys T.D., said; “Since

their inception in 2014, the Local Enterprise Offices (LEOs) have played a hugely significant role in generating indigenous employment across the country. There are now over 36,000 people employed by LEO-supported companies, small Irish businesses that are creating jobs in their own towns and villages. Supporting regional enterprise is a big priority of mine as Minister and it’s for this reason that I allocated an additional €5 million to the LEOs in Budget 2019."

LEOs NATIONWIDE IN LAST 5 yEARS... • 18,640 net jobs created • €81.5m in grants approved • Over 140,000 trained • Over 5,000 projects approved Turning to Future Jobs Ireland, the new whole-ofGovernment plan to secure the country’s economic success, the Minister said: “A range of measures in Future Jobs Ireland 2019 support balanced regional development and the LEOs will play a central role in the success of the initiative. For 2019, the focus will be on strengthening the capacity of LEOs to provide a comprehensive suite

of supports to indigenous Irish businesses and entrepreneurs. We are also working to increase the take-up of LEO productivity supports in particular. Our entrepreneurs are central to ensuring balanced regional development into the future, and I have no doubt the LEOs will continue the success of the past five years in the next five and beyond.” Established in 2014 by the Department of Business, Enterprise and Innovation, the 31 Local Enterprise Offices nationwide are operated in a partnership between Enterprise Ireland and the Local Authorities. Devised as a “first stop shop” for those looking to start a business or for small businesses looking for support, the Local Enterprise Offices are now a significant source of job creation and a hub of entrepreneurship across the country. n

In a major boost to business and the motoring public, Wexford County Council has just announced the appointment of technical advisors to assist with the development of the N11/N25 Oilgate to Rosslare Harbour scheme through feasibility, option selection, design, economic appraisal and planning. The project has been allocated €800,000 funding this year, and the contract appointing engineering consultants Mott MacDonald Ireland Limited was signed in the Council chamber on Thursday May 16th.

Outgoing Cathaoirleach of Wexford County Council, Councillor Keith Doyle, welcomed the announcement of the advancement of this major road scheme which will complete the motorway connection to Rosslare Europort. The scheme consists of a 33km section of key strategic transport corridor linking Rosslare Europort/Wexford with both Dublin via the M11, and Cork/ Waterford via the N25. The N11 and N25 form part of the European Designated E01 Route from Larne to Rosslare Europort. This route provides a direct

strategic link between mainland Europe and the island of Ireland, which will become of increasing strategic importance in the context of current Brexit negotiations between the European Union and the United Kingdom. The project is consistent with the objectives of the National Planning Framework – Project Ireland 2040, and the National Development Plan 2018-2027. n

Today I got an unusual call.... it was to go out and attend a turkey! It was a first for me! I know the clients well and they're always very genuinely concerned about all their animals. It was a busy day in the clinic so I was late getting out to them. Their house is nestled in the foothills of the Blackstairs mountains and it’s a beautiful drive at almost anytime of the year but May is a special month, everything is fresh, blooming or in full leaf. It certainly is one of the perks of the job taking in the countryside scenes on our way to work. When I got there, I realised that they had rescued not only the turkey and her pal, but a whole bunch of battery hens too. They showed me photos of when the hens arrived, most without feathers, sores on their skin and looking in pretty wretched condition. As I looked around they spoke about each of them. Each had their own name now and they chatted about their own unique personalities, the little quirky things each of them did... Dido would only roost in the one particular house, a converted little dog house, and with Dido, her own little companion toddled in each night. They were the only two that headed for this one... the rest had their own perches, their own little idiosyncrasies which the owners watched and observed with glee. I began to realise that these little characters had been caged all of their lives, cooped up in cages to produce eggs so we could eat cheap eggs, cakes, pastries... It’s the same with the chicken you buy in the supermarket, €3.99... This animal has had a lifespan of anything from 25 to 35 days... yep that's how long they live for... Pigs are reared in a very intensive manner too and it’s becoming like a factory farm in most types of farming. The bottom line for farmers is that they're forced to produce more for less and less. They suffer as a result, the animals certainly don't benefit and ultimately the consumer, us, gets a cheap product but at what price really? Our small family farms are becoming a thing of the past, farms have to be bigger to survive and the human touch, the nurturing spirit which always endeared me to the farming community is being lost to a necessity of numbers. 30 years ago a farmer with 80 acres could rear of family of probably four or five kids, educate them and have a decent wage. Nowadays, that would be almost impossible unless they're in intensive farming. Who is the winner here?... Nobody! Not the farmers, not the animals and ultimately not the consumer either... The old adage that 'you pay for what you get' still holds true here. Our teenagers took to the streets to protest about the lack of progress by our government on the environment, and the swing to the Greens in the election says the people want change... The animals are our fellow creatures that we share the Earth with. In church and school we were taught that 'Man has dominion over the animals'... For me what was meant by this is that they (like our children) are in our care and it’s our duty to look after them, not do whatever we like with them. This family are leading by example... These animals are certainly loved and they've given back to their new owners in lots of ways... including laying eggs again, including the turkey! I got a few to come home with too so everyone was a winner here!!! n

The Normans return! O n 1 s t M a y 11 6 9 R o b e r t FitzStephen and his Norman Knights landed at Bannow, Co. Wexford and changed the course and complexion of Ireland and Irish history forever. To call it an Invasion would be doing a slight injustice to the Normans after all, as we all know, they came to Ireland by Invitation from the dispossessed King of Leinster Diarmuid Mac Murrough to a group of mercenary Knights to assist him in reclaiming what he considered to be rightfully his – the crown of Leinster. As we listened in glorious May sunshine to the fascinating and informative words of historian Dr. Pat Wallace in the ancient ruins of St. Mary’s Church, Bannow, at the Norman 1169 Commemoration Ceremony, with the lush green fields bordering the clear blue sea stretching as far as the eye could behold in front of us, you could quite easily forgive our Norman ancestors for landing here and fighting to remain here forever. As Ann Farrell, Vice Chair of the Bannow Historical Committee observed, ‘Who wouldn’t want to stay in beautiful Bannow.’ An honour guard of Norman Knights from Enniscorthy Historical Re-enactment Society(EHRS) flanked the time-worn altar at the Commemoration Ceremony as Rich Howlin unveiled a commemorative plaque erected by the Bannow Historical Society in recognition of the 850th Anniversary of the arrival

of the Normans in Ireland. St. Mary’s is the only surviving landmark of the town of Bannow founded by the Normans. The re-created Norman Tented Village at Carrig on Bannow was without doubt the main attraction of this Norman Festival weekend, the first in a series of events to mark what is being called Norman 1169. With 14 different Living History Tents and 15 Living Heritage Craft displays this was a look back in time at how the first Norman visitors to our shore might have lived and loved and slept and ate. Members of Enniscorthy Historical Re-enactment Society, Fingal Living History Society, Conquest Living History from England and Horsemen of Eire stayed on site for the two days of the Festival sleeping in tents and cooking and eating in the field village with many of the English reenactors coming as family units – husbands, wives and children. The highlights of the Norman Village were the stunning Cavalry displays by Horsemen of Eire demonstrating how horses played a vital role in all Norman battles and their excellent pageantry telling the story of Aoife and Strongbow making everything real for the enthralled spectators. And speaking of real – the battle re-enactments with members of Fingal Living History as Viking Irish attacking the Norman Knights of Conquest Living History were not for the fainthearted with both

sides going at each other with gusto and giving the children in the audience lots to whoop and shout about. It was an experience to be on site for the two days with several hundred people passing through and visiting our EHRS tent to try on the heavy chain mail or take a swing with the Mace or Morning Star including our own Co. Wexford Tourism Officer, Billy Byrne, the two Michael Wallaces, Jim Codd and Ann Cassin of Nationwide. I also came across a man called Bermingham (with an ‘e’) who has written volumes on his family history from France through Birmingham in England and eventually to Wexford which he hopes to publish in the future, and met with author Ruadh Butler who has written a Norman trilogy – beginning with the landing of FitzStephen at Bannow in 1169 titled Swordland. A most entertaining, informative and enjoyable weekend and the

Caroline gets motoring TOYOTA COROLLA TOURING SPORTS

Bunclody native Caroline Kidd brings us reviews of the latest new cars to arrive in Ireland. Caroline is the editor of Changing lanes (www.changinglanes.ie), one of Ireland’s leading motoring blogs, and a jury member for Irish Car of the year. she also provides freelance writing services to businesses in Wexford under the name of star Content (www.starcontent.ie).

REVIEW BY CAROLINE KIDD The Toyota Corolla is one of Ireland’s best loved cars and is now in its 12th generation. Ever since Toyota Global President, Akio Toyoda, declared "no more boring cars!" from the brand, there has been something of a renaissance underway at Toyota. That’s thanks to Toyota New Global Architecture (TNGA) that is underpinning a whole new generation of models including C-HR and Prius, and now in 2019, Camry, RAV4 and the new Toyota Corolla family. The new Toyota Corolla is now available in Ireland as a saloon, hatchback and estate (‘Touring Sports’). I recently took the Corolla Touring Sports Hybrid for a test drive. Available from €28,420, the Corolla Touring Sports comes exclusively as a fuel efficient petrol electric, self-charging hybrid. In

this new generation of Corolla it uses a revised 1.8-litre hybrid powertrain putting out 122hp. In the metal, the new Corolla really makes a style statement. The Touring Sports is particularly successful in my opinion. In fact, the hatchback, saloon and estate have all been given an individual look because the new platform gave the designers the freedom to do that. The Corolla Touring Sports is available in the entry Luna trim and in Sol trim with a bit more gear (from €31,990). For the extra spend, Luna adds 17” alloys, a chrome window frame, rear privacy glass, rain sensor, Smart Entry & Start, navigation, textured chrome inserts to the interior, grey lower dashboard, ambient lighting, heated front seats and driver lumbar support. The design and quality of the interior of the new Toyota Corolla has improved dramatically. There are plenty of soft touch materials and a number of technology features including the digital instrument panel and central touchscreen for the infotainment. It all works together very well. The interior of the car is nicely spacious too with decent accommodation for the compact class. The estate is the obvious choice in this new trio of Corollas if you need more space and a bigger boot. The boot

aperture opens wide for easy loading with a low, flat load lip. At 598 litres, there’s also 237 litres more boot volume than in the hatchback. Toyota has made much of the newly adopted Toyota New Global Architecture (TNGA) GA-C platform and rightly so. Key concerns for engineers were to make this Corolla safer and more engaging to drive than anything that has come before. The GA-C platform guarantees a more rewarding driving experience thanks to a centre of gravity that is lowered by 10 mm, a multi-link rear suspension fitted as standard across the model range, and a 60% more rigid body shell through the use of high strength steel as reinforcement in key areas. According to Toyota, these contribute to better handling and stability without

compromising ride and comfort, as well as reducing high frequency vibration for an increased feeling of quality. I was immediately impressed by the smoothness and refinement of the new Toyota Corolla on the road. The hybrid powertrain means that the car uses a CVT automatic gearbox, but Toyota has considerably improved the refinement of the transmission and also invested in better cabin insulation. As a hybrid, the Toyota Corolla is not about speedy performance but it has adequate power for driving and overtaking manoeuvres. Over a week of driving my fuel consumption averaged at 5.3 l/100 km and on some journeys my consumption was as low as 4 l/100 km. Low CO2 emissions mean that motor tax is €180 per year.

There has been much anticipation for this new generation of the Corolla. But until we drive it we can never be sure if it will deliver on all that is promised. However I’m happy to report that the new Toyota Corolla has improved considerably in just about every way, and it’s also got super competitive again in the compact class. This is a stylish and practical car that is genuinely efficient and pleasant to drive. No more boring cars! Derry girls...

Drugged scones, a broken Child of Prague statue, a presidential visit, yes it’s Derry girls which ended its successful second season with a wedding where the bride got upstaged by a dead aunt! Derry Girls is a successful Irish TV series which follows the exploits of four teenagers who live in Derry and go to an all-girls school where there is in fact one boy attending – James who is English. James is played by Dylan Llewellyn and he is teamed up with Saoirse-Monica Jackson as Erin Quinn, Louisa Harland as Orla McCool, Nicola Coughlan as Clare Devlin, Jamie-Lee O'Donnell as Michelle Mallon, Tara Lynne O'Neill as Ma/Mary, Kathy Kiera Clarke as Aunt Sarah, Siobhan McSweeney as Sister Michael. Written by Lisa McGee, this series is set at the end of the Troubles in Derry in the 1990s. In one episode of this hilarious comedy, Jerry and his wife Mary go to the pictures for a romantic night out only to be joined by Mary’s sister and her date and to make matters worse Tommy Tiernan, as Gerry, is confronted by his father-in-law Joe who can’t stand him. These all live together in the same house and are always fighting. The scones which have druges in them is another hilarious episode. If you missed the second series you can catch it on More

4 catch up, and the good news is that Season 3 has been given the go-ahead plus a possible movie so it looks like this gang will be on our screens for a good few years yet. Derry Girls missed out on a Bafta to Killing Eve but it definitely gets the Slaney News seal of approval. DIsaPPOIntInG enDInG tO seasOn 8 I must be the only person on this planet who doesn’t watch the HBO production of Game of thrones. I heard there was a very disappointing ending to this hugely over-priced TV series which lasted over eight seasons and over six years, but I’ve heard that the ending wasn’t what fans had expected. This series had a great cast, plus Enniscorthy actors, Fintan Kelly and Finn Redmond as extras, that’s a great steppingstone for them. Speaking of Fintan, he recently completed his first film in which he ‘does a Clint Eastwood’ by acting, writing and directing Ignatius which tells the story of a politician and touches on the serious subject matter of domestic violence. Fintan does an excellent job in all three roles. If you haven’t seen it yet you’ll get a chance again during the upcoming Wexford Literary Festival in Enniscorthy in July as Fintan will be doing a workshop there as well as showing the film. – Joseph Doyle

bewAre oF bogus collectors always beware of people collecting for charities who may not be genuine. Try and check that the person collecting the donation has official identification and has a permit to collect in that particular area. Genuine collectors should be able to produce identification and documentation to prove they are legitimate if someone asks. Anyone carrying out a bucket collection is required to have a permit dated and signed by the local garda superintendent.

You could also ask them some questions pertinent to the particular charity e.g. who is the local branch Chairperson? If the person knows very little about the charity they may be bogus. If you have doubts about a collector, contact the charity head office and they’ll advise you and contact the Gárdaí if needs be. GREATEST COMEBACK OF ALL TIME? In the recent Leinster schools 'B' U-14 football semi-final between Enniscorthy CBS and Coláiste Choilm, Tullamore, Enniscorthy got off to a slow start, to put it mildly, and found themselves 5-11 to 0-0 behind at halftime. Rather than head for the bus home at that stage, the team decided to give it a lash in the second half which turned out to be the polar opposite to the first half with Enniscorthy rattling in 11 goals, and a point, to win by four points in the end. To come from 26 points down, and with no wind advantage in that second half, has to be some sort of record for a football match. We await hearing from any GAA statisticians out there! In the meantime best of luck to Enniscorthy CBS in the final against Ashbourne.

A fest with zest

Artist Ciaran Bowen with Helena Gorey. Pic: Maria Nolan.

Parcels of potential Parcels of potential – that’s how fellow artist Helena Gorey described the most unusual work by young Wexford artist Ciaran Bowen as she opened his first solo exhibition at the Presentation Centre earlier this month. Fake Utopia is striking, colourful, imaginative but most of all unusual. Using a variety of materials – oil paint,

Silicone canvas, paint skins on expanding foam, this exhibition is unique – like nothing I have seen before. It is creative, original and inspiring, many of the pieces for all the world reminded me of the intricate icing you might see on elaborate cakes and with the same effect – it catches and holds both the eye and the mind. n Artist Ciaran Bowen with Visual Arts Manager, Lisa Byrne.

Above: Nadia Donohoe at Fake Utopia Exhibition. Pic: Maria Nolan.

Whether out of inquisitiveness or the visual attraction of the flamboyant colours, Ciaran’s art is eye-catching and as Helena Gorey says, ‘will brighten and lighten any area in your living or work space’. Introducing the artist and the exhibition, Presentation Visual Arts Manager Lisa Byrne said that she was both excited and delighted to showcase Ciaran’s work in a space like the Presentation and looked forward to a variety of people who use the building in a community context viewing it. Helena Gorey was lavish in her praise of Ciaran’s work saying it is ‘full of texture and ideas and ready to grow and expand with limitless potential’. So do pay a visit to The Presentation Centre from now until the 29th June and see this very different exhibition for yourself. – maria nolan

things are really hotting up for this year’s Wexford literary Festival from 4th – 7th July as the Organising Committee strive to make this year’s event the best to date with a greater local and town focus. To this end, new elements have been introduced like our Denis Collins Visual Story Award in memory of our friend and patron of the arts who sadly passed away recently, our Underground Writers Society Creative Writing Workshop with three former members of our Festival Committee Caroline Busher, Sheila Forsey and Shane Dunphy, our Pigs Toes and Handbags Poetry Workshop with local poet Margaret Galvin, o u r F i l m S c r i p t Wr i t i n g Workshop with Imelda O`Reilly and local actor and director Fintan Kelly, our Pub Theatre at Holohans Pub, Slaney Place, featuring the plays of last year’s finalists, Pop Up Poetry and Spoken Word events which will take place in cafes and restaurants and Step Up to the Mic with our own Peter Murphy in The Presentation Centre. Byrne’s Bookshop, one of our sponsors from the inception of the Festival, will host book signings – Morning Coffee with Felicity Hayes McCoy who has been with us from the very beginning and has a strong town connection through her relative Marion Stokes – one of the three Cumann na mBan women who hoisted the Tricolour over The Athenaeum during Easter Week 1916. Felicity will be signing her lastest book in the very popudefinitive biography of this neglected historical family and especially of Edward whose entire public career from 1792 to 1822 was one of service to the Irish nation. It was a life filled with so much political triumph and family tragedy. the limited edition book is available in the Book Centre, Wexford; nolan’s, new ross; and the Irish national Heritage Park. n

lar Finfarran series The Transatlantic Book Club and later on Saturday 6th July Byrne’s will be hosting Afternoon Tea with Sheila Forsey from Kilmuckridge who will be signing her lastest novel Kilbride House set in the 1950`s. Sheila, a former member of the Festival Committee, attributes a lot of her current success to the Wexford Literary Festival. Eamonn Wall of the well known Murphy Floods family will be In Conversation With friend and local author Paul O`Reilly and again we are thrilled to have Eamonn with us, one of the Festival’s staunch supporters from the get go. Eamonn will be discussing his poetry, his writing and his documentary Your Rivers Trained You filmed in Enniscorthy and his latest book From Oven Lane to Sun Prairie. This modest Enniscorthy man is currently the Vice President of the Irish American Writers & Artists Association and is the SmurfitStone Professor of Irish Studies and Professor of English at the University of Missouri, St. Louis. As an Organising Committee, we attempt to bring all forms of literary endeavour to our Festival weekend and to the Enniscorthy public and this year we have introduced a new and exciting feature inviting VIP Deputy Editor Niamh Devereux to be In Conversation With Xpose’s Fashion Stylist and Blogger Laura Mullett and her sister, Make-up Artist and Blogger Jade Mullett. All three are local lasses who are carving a niche for themselves in very challenging and competitive spheres. Niamh is a journalist from Enniscorthy, based in Dublin. She began her career in the Evening Herald before becoming Senior Reporter with the Enniscorthy Echo. In 2015, she became Online Editor of VIP Magazine posting daily about the latest in showbiz, fashion and beauty. Niamh currently holds the title of Deputy Editor of VIP organising photoshoots, conducting interviews with well-known Irish personalities, and running the beauty section of the magazine, trialling the latest cosmetics to hit the market and sharing the best in skincare, makeup and hair products. Laura and Jade are well known fashion icons with major followings on Facebook and Instagram. All three Enniscorthy ladies have in-depth knowledge of the fashion and beauty industry as well as marketing and writing talents and we are really looking forward to hearing them talk about their journey and careers in this new Festival feature. Because it is the 850th Anniversary of the Norman landing in Wexford, we couldn`t

Niamh Devereux

let the Festival pass without a nod to our Norman heritage so we have invited author Ruadh Butler to join us at Enniscorthy Castle to talk on his Norman Trilogy – Swordland, Lord of the Sea Castle and The Earl Strongbow featuring the landing at Bannow and Baginbun and the taking of Waterford. Again this is a new element bringing literary history and heritage into focus at the Festival. This will be an iconic event because of the timing, the setting – our perfectly intact Norman Castle being the most splendid venue along with the presence of Enniscorthy Historical Re-enactment Society adding colour and pageantry to the occasion. Definitely, one not to be missed by anyone with an interest in our Norman past. Introducing Manchan Magan’s bilingual play at The Presentation Centre is yet another new venture of this year’s Festival and a way of including ‘the cupla focal’ and bringing us all back to our roots in more ways than one as he bakes real bread and gets the audience to ‘churn the butter’! This one I have to see! A variety of new and inspiring aspects to this year ’s Wexford Literary Festival as we continue to grow, expand and develop along with all our old favourities - Culture & Cocktails at the Castle and our Aw a r d s N i g h t a t T h e Presentation Centre where the winners of the Colm Toibin Short Story Award, the Anthony Cronin Poetry Award, the Billy Roche One Act Play Award and the Eileen Gray Window Display Award will be presented. This year’s Festival will be opened on Thursday 4th July at Enniscorthy Library by writer and broadcaster, Sinead Crowley. Sinead is the Arts and Media Correspondent with RTE and her novels to date include Can Anybody Help Me and Are You Watching Me. So please join us as we bring this exhilarating celebration of literature of all genres to the Enniscorthy and Wexford literary calendar. – maria nolan
