Slaney News
1st August 2018
THE SLANEY NEWS IS NOW AVAILABLE IN 230 OUTLETS!
comment The Slaney News has reached its 100th issue milestone. We started publishing in 2010 – a slim 16 pages per issue. Over the years, thanks to the support of hundreds of local advertisers, writers and photographers, we have increased in size to 36 pages per issue with plans to go to 40 pages later this year. We still distribute 10,000 copies per issue using a combination of a professional door-to-door delivery service in Enniscorthy and Bunclody, plus a network of 230 outlets in Enniscorthy and surrounding villages where readers can pick up their own copy every month. The paper's content continues to highlight all that is positive in our community – particularly success stories of all kinds for local individuals, clubs, organisations and businesses, as well as promoting local festivals, music and arts events, etc. This being our 100th issue we are running some competitions for our readers and advertisers. One lucky advertiser could win €500 of Free advertising. And, as a thank you to our loyal readers, we will be giving away lots of Free tickets to local concerts, shows, etc on our Facebook page "Slaney News" over the next few weeks, so make sure to check our Facebook page on a regular basis. See more details on our various competitions on page 10. In recent weeks, Datascope, the printer of our paper based on the Old Dublin Road, Enniscorthy, has been taken over by Webprint, based in Cork, who will now be printing our paper. Naturally we are very disappointed that our Enniscorthybased paper won’t be printed in Enniscorthy any more, but on the positive side we expect the print quality will now be even better, the paper whiter, the edges of the paper will be neater, and the pages will now be stapled together to better hold our ever-increasing number of pages. We thank Kevin, Trina, David and all the team in Datascope for their wonderful work and top quality service over the last eight years.
10,000 copies per issue of which 5,000 are distributed door-to-door in Enniscorthy town and 700 in Bunclody. hoW to baCkuP data FroM an android deviCe
by DaviD pohluDek Ferns compuTer services
It’s not a matter of if you should back up your data, but how. This is pretty easy on desktops nowadays thanks to cloud storage providers offering apps that automatically sync your files in the background, but this functionality is noticeably absent when you install their official mobile apps. There are numerous ways to automatically back up your data from an Android device, and with the following apps, you should be able to do so in whichever one works best for you. dropsync: Let’s get the easiest solutions out of the way first. If you want something that can replicate Dropbox’s desktop client on your mobile phone, the app goes by the name of Dropsync. It works in the background, quietly syncing local folders with their remote equivalents the same way we wish the official Dropbox app would. Not only does Dropsync do its job well, it comes with a completely thorough set of options. Foldersync: Let’s say neither Dropbox nor Google Drive stores your files. In that case, you should check out FolderSync. This app includes those three options but also supports Microsoft OneDrive and many others. The app lets you automatically sync using FTP or Windows Share on your local network. With the right router, creating your own mini-cloud is as easy as plugging in a hard drive. bittorrent sync: One way to get around relying on the cloud (or creating your own) is to simply sync your files across each device that needs them. As long as your electronics don’t all die or go missing at once, your data is accounted for, and you still get the convenience of not having to manually move documents and media from one machine to another. BitTorrent Sync can help you make this happen. Ferns Computer Services has been in business in Ferns since May 2007. Established by David Pohludek, it has a huge clientele base all over Co. SIX businesses investing now in Enniscorthy! July was one of the best months in recent years for new or extended businesses opening in Enniscorthy. –––––––––––––––––––––––––– The complete revamp of the sMyth’s ARRO shop in Enniscorthy is nearing completion with a new 5,000 sq.ft. building now open sitting between the old Lighting shop and the Wafer Street shop. The new development will see the total shop size increase to roughly 20,000 sq.ft. making Smyth’s Arro one of the largest retailers in Co. Wexford. The new layout of the store will make it easier for customers to browse and freely walk between departments. The addition of a new consultation area now facilitates an interior designer to work with customers decorating their homes. –––––––––––––––––––––––––– In a huge vote of confidence for the town, a major new CEntRA shOP and dRIvE sERvICE stAtIOn has opened in Enniscorthy on the Milehouse Road.
The proprietor, Martin McSorley, already has two other similar set-ups in Courtown and Ballinaboola, as well as several others around the country. "Waiting list for Home Support services in Co. Wexford is unacceptably high" Sinn Féin’s general election candidate for Co. Wexford, Cllr. Johnny Mythen, has said that it is extremely worrying that there are over 6,000 of the most vulnerable people in our society, such as older people and those with disabilities, waiting for home support services across the state. “Home support services such as home care packages and home help hours are some of the most important services the HSE provide. Not only do they allow for older people to stay in their homes, but they are also incredibly important for those with ailments or disabilities. Cllr Mythen continued: “Home care delivered in the home is the preferred form of care for most people and their families, and older people, those with disabilities, and their families are continuously calling out for more home support services in order to meet the need that exists. “Unfortunately, this government, with the support of Fianna Fáil, has taken the decision to underfund the service to the point that there are 6,118 people waiting for a home support service across the State. “The situation in CHO Area 5, which includes Co. Wexford, is equally pressing with 557 people on waiting lists for home support.

“Getting older or having a disability should not leave you invisible to the State. The State must ensure that older people and those who have a disability can live at home with respect, with dignity, and as comfortably as possible.”

At the Riverside Park hotel on 16th July, housing Officer with Wexford County Council, Padraig O’Gorman, ably assisted by Michelle Carey, delivered a comprehensive synopsis of the Government’s Rebuilding Ireland Action Plan. The seminar, hosted by Enniscorthy Chamber of Commerce under Chairperson Maree Lyng and Development Officer Jimmy Gahan, was an endeavour to make the property owners of Enniscorthy, particularly those with premises in the centre of town, aware of the Repair & Lease Scheme now being rolled out under this programme by Wexford County Council. Under the project if you own a premises in any part of the county (not necessarily in an urban area) that has been vacant for 12 months or more Wexford County Council will provide you with an interest-free loan to meet the cost of low level renovation works to the tune of €40,000 per unit. The Council will enter into a longterm agreement with you the property owner and will become the landlord of the premises arranging Social Housing tenants for the property, setting and collecting rent and looking after the general maintenance and repair of any and all damage to said property apart from structural damage, for the duration of the lease. The initiative is not for private renting and there has to be a social housing demand for the property and it has to be deemed viable accommodation. In my opinion this is a winwin scenario whereby the property owner avails of an interest-free loan to carry out necessary repairs and upgrade his property that might otherwise become derelict and an

He has neither to find tenants nor deal with them nor does he have the hassle of collecting rent or the cost of advertising or finding new tenants. Plus the property will be returned to the owner at the end of the leasing term in good repair and condition. Coupled with all of the
above this innovative project should substantially improve the look of our town centres, breathing life back into them along with reducing the social housing crisis, now what could be wrong with all of that? Third Lane for N11 Transport infrastructure ireland has confirmed a 22km enhancement plan for the n11. Consultants are preparing documents to enhance the M11/n11 corridor from its junction with the M50 to Junction 14 at Coyne’s Cross. According to Wexford TD James Browne, who has been taking a keen interest in this matter, consultants are drawing up a preliminary design, environmental assessment and planning application. The upgrade of the 22km stretch of the N11 between M50 Junction 5 Bray North and M11 Junction 14 Coyne’s Cross will… add a third lane to the northbound and southbound carriageways. “I have consistently raised the plight of Co. Wexford commuters with Minister for Transport, Tourism and Sport, Shane Ross, and the TII since being elected. The N11 is the only major road outside of Dublin that has not been upgraded in the past 20 years. It is long overdue… to ease traffic congestion.” “This is a welcome measure that will improve the quality of life for commuters and will bring economic benefits to Co. Wexford. I will continue to call on the TII and Minister Ross to expedite these works”, Deputy Browne concluded.

local sinn Féin Councillor, Johnny Mythen, in the company of party leader, Mary lou Mcdinald, took the opportunity at the recent bannon & Rathangan show to address some concerns of the farming community: “It has been a terrible year for farmers. the new CAP [Common Agricultural Policy] needs to be properly funded to sus-
tain the most Irish family farms as possible by providing a decent income, so that farmers can survive and the rural economy is vibrant. "The proposed reduction in the overall money available for the new CAP goes far beyond the reduction in the British contribution to the EU and I fear that Brexit is being used as an excuse to cut fund-
ing for agriculture and environmental investment." "A fully funded CAP is vital across the EU on a range of fronts and in Ireland it is absolutely vital, to keep high quality food production, protect the environment and sustain the family farm. Indeed, CAP has been central to the modernisation of Irish farming over the decades.” n

One can only stand in awe of Enniscorthy’s larry dunbar who has selflessly created a visual spectacle in his neighbourhood communal area for the enjoyment of local residents and for the betterment of the town as a whole. The amazing flower beds, planted and maintained by Larry at Slaney View Park, have not gone unnoticed by Enniscorthy Tidy Towns Association who recently captured Larry on video and livestreamed an interview with him on 12th July on the “Enniscorthy Tidy Towns” Facebook page. Check it out
and learn from Larry’s own tips on maintaining a beautiful garden. Top marks also to local media company, South East TV, who have been very successful in improving the local Tidy Towns Association social media profile. If everybody in town could put in even a fraction of the effort Larry puts in to making their neighbourhood look well, there is no doubt the town could move upwards from its existing, creditable bronze award to reach silver, and eventually gold status. n

Members of the Rapparees/ starlights dIl Committee – Podge hall, Maria nolan, Majella Murphy and tom boland were delighted to hand over a cheque on saturday 21st July to Marie Peelo and kieran brady of Pieta house for the staggering total of €30,458. “A marvellous contribution by the people of Enniscorthy and beyond and a great effort by the club in this its first year to
organise the event,”commented Marie Peelo at the cheque presentation at the Bellefield Nursery on Saturday morning. “The Rapparees/Starlights have been involved since the beginning of the Darkness Into Light Walk in Enniscorthy through members Maria Nolan and Tom Boland who worked with the Shamrocks GAA over the past number of years on the event but this is the first time that it has been run at
Bellefield and we are delighted with the result.” Podge Hall thanked all involved with making the occasion such a success and looked forward to going bigger and better next year. Maria Nolan paid tribute to James Browne TD, Fianna Fail Spokesman on Mental Health, for his attendance at the presentation and thanked Marie and Kieran for taking time on a Saturday morning to come to
Bellefield. “This indeed surpassed our expectations considering when Darkness Into Light began in Enniscorthy we were the only venue in Wexford but this year the DIL Walk took place in 4 venues in the county so we are thrilled that so much was raised in the town, displaying the continuing generosity of the people of Enniscorthy and their tremendous support of worthy causes.” n

Edenderry Remembers Wexford Heroes On Friday evening, 6th July, the lovely square at Edenderry took on the form of an Open Air Theatre as the town commemorated the hanging of Wexford 1798 leaders Fr. Mogue Kearns and Colonel Anthony Perry. C o l o n e l P e r r y, w h o earned himself the nickname `the screeching general`, because of his practice of screaming at the enemy when leading rebel attacks, came f ro m P ro t e s t a n t g e n t r y around Inch and was instrumental in planning the devastating counter-attack upon
an advancing British spearhead at the Battle of Tubberneering on June 4th, which destroyed half of the British army in North Wexford in one fell swoop. Captured and continuously tortured for over 48 hours including being subjected to the horrific practice of pitch capping, Anthony Perry reported to the rebel camp on Vinegar Hill on 29th May and was appointed second in command of the northern army. The rebel priest Mogue Kearns was at the first Battle
of Enniscorthy on 28th May and on Vinegar Hill from where he led a detachment of 2,000 poorly-equipped insurgents northwards to attack Bunclody. Fr. Kearns who is reputed to have been hanged in Paris during the French Revolution, but was cut down by a physician who knew him and recovered, was wounded at Vinegar Hill. Catholic and Protestant were captured in Offaly in July of 1798, tried there and were hanged side by side at Blundell Hill, Edenderry. On 6th July the people of
Edenderry did justice to the memory of both these Wexford heroes who are buried together near the town, with a wonderfully organised and superbly executed pageant complete with redcoats and rebels, judges and magistrates, horses and carriages and the most authentic hanging I have ever witnessed. Remarkably well done and great credit to all involved and Enniscorthy Historical Re-enactment Society was delighted to be part of this remarkable tribute to these brave men. – Maria Nolan
Camolin Commemorates
Enniscorthy Historical Reenactment Society was delighted to be asked to be part of a most poignant, dignified and venerable tribute on Sunday 15th July to all those who lost their lives in the G r e a t Wa r f r o m C o u n t y Kilkenny. The unveiling of a magnificent WW1 Memorial in Kilkenny marble at Noonan’s Folly in the tranquil Peace Park in Kilkenny city, overshadowed by its ancient and majestic Castle, is a most exquisite and apt acknowledgement of the contribution made by 822 men and 5 women from all parts of the county, with their parishes and their names now carved in stone for present and future generations to remember them and the sacrifice they made, as quoted by Lt. Col. Ken Martin of the Royal British Legion Republic of Ireland ‘When you go home, tell them of us and say, For your tomorrow, we gave our today.’ Master of Ceremonies for the solemn occasion was the eloquent John Joe Cullen, Vice-
routing of Lieutenant Thomas B o o k e y a n d h i s Ye o m a n Cavalry known as the Camolin Cavalry by rebel priest Fr. John Murphy and his band of Insurgents from Camolin and the surrounding areas at The Harrow on 26th May 1798.
In the engagement Lieutenant Bookey was killed and the Rebellion had begun in earnest in Wexford. Members of Enniscorthy Historical Re-enactment Society along with members of the Craanford/Monaseed `98
Group came together to recreate the historic pageant complete with the taking of the flag and the death of Lieutenant Bookey. A Parade followed where a `98 Monument to all who lost their lives in the Rebellion

to erect this monument to their memory.’ Following musical tributes and ecumenical prayers, Orla Parkinson’s poem was read by Ger Coady and representatives from the French, Belgian, Australian, American, British, New Zealand, Irish and Canadian Embassies laid wreaths along with Mrs. Deike Potzel, the German Ambassador, who laid a wreath in atonement. Family members were also invited to lay wreaths at the monument at the end of the official ceremony. A most worthwhile and significant occasion in this year, one hundred years since the end of the Great War, and perhaps we here in Enniscorthy and Wexford should be looking to do the same or similar for our own war dead. `They shall not grow old, as we that are left grow old, Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn. At the going down of the sun and in the morning We will remember them.’ Perhaps it’s time we did. – Maria Nolan
Chairman of the Kilkenny Great War Memorial Committee, who called on Minister for Justice & Equality Charlie Flanagan to unveil the Memorial and address the large gathering. Minister Flanagan made a very moving speech about those who left our shores to play their part in the war to end wars saying that whether they left to fight for the freedom of small nations, or because they felt that it might improve the cause of Irish freedom or simply because they needed to put food in the mouths of their children, all of them thought they were doing the right thing and ‘now finally in the rain, in Kilkenny, in July, they are remembered’. Other speakers included Chairman of Kilkenny County Council Eamon Aylward who was lavish in his praise of the organising committee especially its Chairman Donal Croghan saying, ‘This project is the essence of a partnership and community approach and
whilst it is always important to plan and to aspire to a better future, it is equally important to reflect, to remember, to interpret and to acknowledge the past and those who went before us.’ Donal Croghan outlined the work done on the Project since 2010 and thanked all involved especially the Royal British Legion of Ireland for its generous monetary contribution to the Memorial, Kilkenny County Council who made up the significant balance along with individual donations and his own Memorial Committee ‘who put in Trojan work to make today possible’. He concluded with the inscription on the Memorial from the poem Armistice Day, 2009, by Orla Parkinson, ‘Let us their names recall, their dignity restore, no more their deaths disown, lives sacrificed, no shame’, saying, ‘This quote epitomises the drive and dedication that gave the Memorial Committee the determination

He is also part of the band "South American Kings of the Blues". Daniel will play three band gigs over the festival weekend backed by well-known bassist Pat Murphy and the home talent of Brendan Carthy on drums. Daniel will also be playing a few solo gigs over the weekend!
SLIDIN PK (Poland)
Slidin PK is a Polish musician based in Cork – singer/songwriter, whose music is strongly influenced by primitive and root sound of the musical pioneers from the 1920’s-30’s era. His mission is to preserve the spirit of the root Americana style, its technique and sound. Marek Blaszyk will be assisting PK at his festival performance on the clarinet and alto/soprano saxophone.
SHUFFLE TRUFFLE
Daniel De Vita, Slidin PK and Shuffle Truffle will also hold the Blues workshop this year, explaining and performing what the Blues means in their countries.
DUBLIN BLUES CARTEL (FT. MIK PYRO)
Headline Slot Saturday 8th Sept, Treacy’s Hotel. Playing mostly a version of New Orleans R’n’B with a classic rock twist, sandwiched with swing, Rock’n’Roll, Soul, Funk, Blues and rap of all eras. Their set consists of radical reworkings of well known classics.
OTHER ACTS INCLUDE: THE DELTA DOGS: 3 piece powerhouse playing all your favourites! THE STONE COLD HOBO: Arguably one of the highlights of last year's fest. WILL KILLEEN. Totally unique style of celtic roots mixed with American blues. COLM SKWIRBAT: Colm Skwirbat is carrying on the tradition of the old blues masters of the Mississippi Delta by playing the blues on his homemade cigar-box guitars. ADA STORM & PAUL McMORDIE: Blues/Jazz vocalist Ada Storm teams up with lauded guitarist Paul McMordie, to bring you a unique genre-crossing duo. DAVID KING: David King does what a lot of modern Blues artists struggle to do. He makes complex chord progressions work in the blues format. These songs aren’t the same thing on a loop, there are breaks, bridges and different choruses. All this helps make these tracks blues and unboring. JACKIE McAULEY: Van Morrison's original guitarist is here to launch his book “I, Sideman. The greatest period in the history of Rock & Roll & my humble part playing in it.” Jackie will read some extracts from the book, and play a few acoustic numbers. Venue: Byrnes Bookshop, Saturday 8th Sept, 1.30pm.
SOME OF THE VENUES THIS YEAR ARE:
Alba Italian Restaurant - The Antique Tavern - Dawsons Bar - Holohan’s Pub Rackard’s Bar - Stamps - T. Doyle - Toss Kavanagh’s - Treacy’s Hotel. This year’s Blackstairs Blues Festival will be held from 7th to the 9th of September, with Fringe events happening from Thursday 6th right through to Monday 10th. The Festival is now in its 24th year, having been launched all those years ago in 1995. It is still gathering strength and followers, and proving itself to be one of the highlights on the Irish Blues scene and boasting of being the longest consecutively run Blues Festival in the country!!! The ever popular Press Launch
is being held in Stamp’s Pub, Market Square, on Thursday 16th of August at 8:30pm. Karl and Julie (of Stamps) are providing some finger-food on the night and the entertainment will be provided by Blues maestro Ben Prevo who will play a stripped back Acoustic selection of his infamous back catalogue. Ben is a guitarist and vocalist, originally from New York, who has combined his influences of country, rock, jazz, and blues into a unique melange. The material is varied – vocal and
SLIDIN PK instrumental selections, covers and original compositions, all delivered with integrity and soul. Over the past 20 years he has created a name as one of Dublin's most respected blues guitarists. When Ben was starting out his ear was not sufficiently developed to figure out songs – so he wrote his own. While fusing rock, funk, soul, country, jazz and r&b influences, Ben tries to bring the honesty and integrity of the blues to his work. n

Are You Bernie Heaney has now teamed up with Boz and has a nationwide tour all ready to go. She started it off in Wexford in the ever more popular dance venue, The OakTree Foulksmills. I need to get there there some Sunday night soon as I'm hearing great reports about this new venue. The two dance floors have me intrigued no end so if you see a black van hare-ing over Wexford bridge some Sunday night, that will be me, heading to Foulksmills after work! Now, just in case you forgot, this weekend is bank holiday and there are lots of things on for anyone who likes to dance or just listen to great live music. Cliona Hagan is in the Rhu Glenn on Saturday, Michael English is in the Ashdown Park Gorey on Sunday night and also on Sunday Aidan Clerkin is in The Ardattin Inn Carlow and Tony, Theresa & T h e S t a r s a re i n Kiltealy for their Patron Day. Robert Mizzell is playing The Community Centre, Taghmon Friday 10th August. BBQ and refreshments for this one. Myself and the crew are heading to the vintage day in Stradbally with the dance floor on Sunday but all roads will be leading to The Tinahely Show on Monday with Declan Nerney headlining with Tony, Theresa & The Stars, Stuart Moyles and After Dark all taking up a slot. They have a huge dance floor and lots for all the family to do all day.

But right on our doorstep is the biggest Rock 'n' Roll event of the year, The Rockin' Food Festival 2018. Indeed the biggest in the country! Organised and run by the very active and hardworking Rockin' Food Festival Committee. There is way too much packed into this festival to fit in this article but I'm sure there are more details somewhere else in this issue of the Slaney News. But just to let you know it kicks off this Friday and runs for the whole weekend and there is a very well laid out booklet
Enchantment for all at Wells House You’re never too old for a Mad Hatters Tea Party and that was borne out last month at Wells House as visitors of all ages gathered on the front lawn to have their photograph taken with that irresistibly insane character from Lewis Carroll’s ageless classic alice in Wonderland – The Mad Hatter. My octogenarian mother included, who hopped in beside him to have her afternoon tea poured! Once again Wells House excelled itself with charming and engaging characters like the Queen of Hearts, Tinkerbell, Elsa and Anna along with the Mad Hatter providing frolics and fun on the front lawn for the young with lots of photo opportunities for the young and the young at heart. House tours were available on request with the knowledgeable guide Edel Kelly and to the rear of the stately home
with Declan Flanagan
there was all kinds of everything from BBQs to disco dancing, to puppet shows, to high jinks in the playground, to picnics on the grass, to archery lessons and falconry displays and of course the beautiful woodland walks where, who knows, you might just be lucky enough to catch a fleeting glimpse of one of the many fairies who reside in the woods. For €10 for your car, this is marvellous value for an entire family who can spend the whole day on the premises enjoying their own picnic and all of the aforementioned activities as well as the wide open spaces where children can be children without danger and with very little commercialism. Another thumbs-up for Sabine Rosler and her innovative team who continue to create adventure and fantasy at Wells House. – Maria Nolan

Louisiana Country and Western Star set for Taghmon Country and Western star, Robert Mizzell, all the way from Louisiana, USA, comes t o Ta g h m o n C a m r o s s Community Centre on Friday 10th August for a special concert with dancing ‘til late. Mezzell was born in Louisiana, the Bayou State, and raised on the shores of Lake Bistineau near Shreveport. Robert's early musical influences came from his parents both performed in a Church Gospel group. At the age of 17, Robert moved to Connecticut where he worked with his father in a painting and decorating business. He then joined the US army where he served for a number of years. After his military service he moved to Ireland with dreams of a career in country music. Robert has made Ireland his home for over 20 years. He served his apprenticeship in Country Music since he first arrived here, and is now a top Country Artist in Ireland and the UK. He has released 12 solo studio albums and 2 full-length DVDs to date, and is constantly touring Ireland and the UK with his band “The Country Kings”. Robert was voted “Ireland’s Favourite Country Music Singer” in a poll conducted by RSVP Magazine. “Kick Ass Country” was
Robert's first major hit, but it was “Say You Love Me” that made him a household name in Ireland. Other hits include “Gone, Gone, Gone”, “She's My Baby”, “Mama Courtney” a n d “ Tw o R o o m s A n d A Kitchen”. On the 10th August, Robert will be supported by Sabrina Fallon from Portumna, Galway, with doors opening from 9.30pm. A full bar will be available on the night and a BBQ will be served throughout the night. “The night promises to a great night of dancing” said Justin Kelly – one of the event organisers with Taghmon Camross GAA Club. ”Our event committee has been working hard to provide a great night’s entertainment and for just €15 for a ticket – it’s a steal.” Tickets are available from the Lantern Box Office on 1 Main Street, Wexford, and from Justin Kelly 087-6857464 and David Foley 086-8260450. EDUCATION & TRAINING
One of the most important pieces of advice we can give to Leaving Cert students in our practice is, “Whatever you do, get a good solid Honours Degree. At least then, you will have a meaningful qualification from which you can launch your career.” The experience of being away at college for three to four years is very valuable and, in some cases, more valuable than the education itself. The college experience has allowed the young adult to mature and has moulded the individual to a large extent. From this position we find that they are in a much better place to make career decisions. In many cases, though not in all, I feel that unless young school leavers come to their sense of destiny at a young age, it’s only when the students graduate from their degree that they are in a position to make realistic career choices. “If a second level student is unsure about which career path to take, completing a broad degree such as a BA can be a very worthwhile step along the career path.” Of course this is not to say that everybody is suited to completing an honours degree. Many students will go on to complete valuable apprenticeships and work-based training and will have long and successful careers within these sectors. Others may leave college with lower level certificates/diplomas depending on their circumstances. However where possible we always encourage

students to progress to honours degree standard. Post Graduate Studies Many graduates go on to pursue studies at postgraduate level. Based on information gained from a study in 2015 by the Higher Education Authority, employment for higher and post graduate
diploma graduates was 16% higher than for honours degree graduates. Many of the graduate students attending Whitney Career Guidance are seeking to access postgraduate studies with a view to improving their employability or change career path. Once they are qualified with a Level 8 Honours Degree and meet certain criteria, there are a huge number of postgraduate course options available to them. The following is a list of just some of these postgrad course options that are available from any Level 8 Honours Degree. ● Primary Teaching ● Business Management Marketing - Human Resources ● Social Work - Counselling Solicitor ● Creative Media - Fashion Buying - Journalism ● Occupational Therapy Speech & Language Therapy ● ICT and a host of other “conversion courses”. n

Challenging and exciting times at Chamber
Enniscorthy & District Chamber Officers L-R: Maree Lyng (Chairperson), Michael O’Leary (ViceChair), Jimmy Gahan (Development Officer), Connie Doyle (Treasurer). Pic: Maria Nolan.
The mood of Enniscorthy & District Chamber of Commerce AGM was upbeat and positive on Wednesday evening, 5th July, as President Maree Lyng used the famous phrase in her opening address, ‘A lot done and more to do.’ Maree gave a detailed presentation of all that the Chamber has achieved in the past 12 months under its very diligent Executive and the hard working and dedicated staff at Portsmouth House. Maree praised the work of former Chamber CEO Catriona Murphy in getting the new premises and systems up and running and welcomed Catriona’s replacement, Jimmy Gahan, to the job wishing him well in his new position as Development Officer. President Lyng paid tribute to Directors Dan Kickham a n d P J D a rc y w h o h a v e decided to step down after 30 years of committed and invaluable service to the town and the Chamber and presented a bouquet of flowers to Secretary, Margo Banville Hogan, who Maree said, ‘has given sterling service in the position for the past 15 years and has also decided to stand down for personal reasons’. Maree was extensive in her praise of the Rockin’ Food Committee under the expert
guidance of Jean O’Connell and complimented Eugene Doyle, Company Secretary, and called on him to make the financial report to AGM. Eugene’s Report was detailed and comprehensive showing an income rise mainly due to growth in membership and increased revenue from organised events such as annual Race Night, Happy Pear, Golf Classic, Wake Up Wednesdays and Networking Lunches, coupled with a carefully managed expenditure account resulting in an end of year surplus of income over expenditure. Chamber Development Officer Jimmy Gahan delivered a most wide ranging and complete account of his new role since taking office only eight short weeks previous, detailing many of the programmes and projects he has been involved with including the commencement of works at the new Enniscorthy Technology Park which Jimmy hopes to assist in bringing to fruition. ‘I am continuing to engage with Wexford County Council CEO Tom Enright and former Chamber President Michael Bennett who has been to the fore in both the conception and development of this project and has just returned from New York where he was part

of a high-powered delegation to the United Nations to discuss possibilities for the Technology Park going forward.’ The promotion of cultural and social events with commercial opportunities for Enniscorthyis high on Jimmy’s agenda and already he has been in discussions with a number of parties who are expressing interest in the town being the location of yet another film similar to Brooklyn. Job creation is of paramount importance to the new Development Officer who told the AGM, ‘I’m glad to report I have been able to assist a potential new employer in securing a suitable premises for a cosmetics manufacturing outlet and I was also able to assist an individual to secure a new retail outlet which will open in the centre of town in September.’ Jimmy’s focus in his first year will be to concentrate on a membership drive and examining the possibility of amalgamating the Enniscorthy Business Association and the Chamber ‘in order to speak as a united voice when promoting the town and district at both local and national level’. Jimmy concluded by acknowledging the work of Chairperson Maree Lyng saying, ‘We are indeed fortunate to have such a lady at the helm, I want to acknowledge publicly her role in the development of this Chamber and in the promotion of Enniscorthy town and district since her appointment.’ All very good news items auguring well for the future of both Chamber and town. The new Directors for 2018 are Michael Bennett and Eric Barron, Company Secretary Eugene Doyle, Chamber Officers: Chair Maree Lyng, Vice-Chair Michael O`Leary, Treasurer Connie Doyle, Development Officer Jimmy Gahan. Recording Secretary and members of the Executive Committee will be appointed at the September meeting. – Maria Nolan
Rates to the fore In response to numerous complaints from the owners of business premises in Enniscorthy town and district, the local Chamber of Commerce organised a public meeting at the Riverside Park Hotel on 19th July to discuss all aspects of the rates system and how it applies to business premises in Enniscorthy town and district. A senior member of the Rates Department of Wexford County Council, Seamus Begley, addressed the meeting to explain the current system and likely future changes. He made it clear that Wexford County Council just administers the rates system but the crucial valuations, on which rates are calculated, are set in Dublin in the Valuation Office. The meeting, while heated at times, invariably came back to a couple of key points – firstly, the rates system as we know it came into being in 1838 and has changed little since, and secondly that any inconsistencies in the workings of the existing system stem from the fact that the Dublinbased Valuation Office is out of touch with the reality for busin e s s e s o n t h e g ro u n d i n Enniscorthy. In the words of one speaker, the existing system “is not fit for purpose”. The meeting was told that a revaluation exercise will begin next year for all the coun-
Sean Doyle on the vexed question of
COmmERCIAL RATES I’m sure most of us are reluctant tax payers. On occasion most taxes attract special attention for their perceived inequity. One I can think of offhand is the Universal Social Charge introduced to shore up the State’s finances as the glory days of the Celtic Tiger collapsed and entered the twilight zone. One tax recently to hit the local headlines is the alleged inequity of rates on business premises. Small businesses in our town are under severe pressure from the large supermarkets and online retailers. Apparently some recent valuations were increased to such an extent that the rates due on some premises doubled. There is definitely something wrong with a system that creates such variances and inconsistencies. It is time the present system was restructured. Businesses also pay water charges and for some premises they are quite high while the rest of us pay nothing for such a vital commodity. Exceptions are people who receive their supply of water from local private schemes and people with their own wells always paid for their precious water supply. Of course, it goes without saying, if you remove one tax it must be replaced by another. I’m not offering any solutions but I feel it is about time that a Commission of Experts including representatives of business and within a set period comes up with proposals to alleviate the worst features of the present system. Over the past few years almost every controversial issue raised in Leinster House had some kind of an Official Inquiry or Tribunal set up to probe the ins and outs of it and to come up with findings. It is about time that the whole system of financing local government was overhauled and made to fit into today’s modern economy. Surely it is not beyond the ingenuity of our presentday experts to come up with solutions that are fair and equitable and make ‘Ireland Great Again’. – Sean Doyle, 14/07/2018
try and will be based on the current market rental value. Chamber Development Officer, Jimmy Gahan, undertook to bring all the concerns raised at the meeting to the attention of Minister Paul
Kehoe and James Browne TD, as politicians at a national level need to seriously address the outdated rates system with a view to coming up with a fairer way for Councils to raise revenue. n
Taking action on Brexit Some 85 per cent of companies are taking direct action to respond to the threats posed by Brexit, according to Minister Paul kehoe. The figures were confirmed to the Minister by his Cabinet colleague, Business Minister Heather Humphreys. They stem from a major survey of over 2,400 companies supported by the State agency Enterprise Ireland. “I warmly welcome this high rate of Brexit-related activity by indigenous businesses. 85pc of the companies sur-
veyed are taking action, which is up from 38pc this time last year. These figures are very encouraging,” Minister Kehoe said. “The top measures that businesses are taking include diversifying their export markets, improving operational competitiveness, strengthening their business in the UK, developing strategic partnerships and investing in R&D. “Additionally, 53pc of the companies surveyed said that in 2018, Brexit would not change their ability and appetite
to invest, while 65pc said it would not change their employment plans. “The Government offers a wide range of Brexit supports to businesses, so I am delighted to see that so many are engaging with this offering. I would urge any companies in Wexford not availing of these supports to consider making contact with their Local Enterprise Office as a first stop shop. “Brexit is only around the corner… I want local businesses to know we are here to help,” Minister Kehoe concluded. n

The Ireland South MEP was speaking as a new EU report revealed that Ireland is unlikely to meet its target of 100% high speed broadband coverage by 2020. “It's hugely disappointing that Ireland is set to miss the 2020 target and is unlikely to catch up to it until at least 2025,” she said.

Cath Lab for South East
VET DIARY FOR AUGUST with the Moyne Veterinary Hospital Joe kavanagh tells of a recent case involving two noble spirits. Back in May a client travelled a decent distance to get her elderly dog examined. We examined 'Chilli' and made up some remedies for her and she responded really well. I didn't hear from the owner until Saturday just gone when 'Chilli' collapsed and was rushed in.
Minister of State Paul kehoe has welcomed the confirmation received on 2nd July that a modular cath lab is to provided for cardiac patients at university Hospital Waterford. In a letter to Oireachtas members in the South East, Health Minister Simon Harris said the move will address waiting times at the hospital and provide better services for the region. Minister Kehoe has consistently lobbied Minister Harris to introduce measures that will ensure patient safety is a priority. "This is welcome news and will come as a relief to families in the South East," Minister Kehoe said.
"However, it's important we continue to monitor the situation closely in the coming weeks and I will continue to work with my government colleagues in this regard," he added. Wexford Sinn Féin general election candidate, Cllr. Johnny Mythen, has also welcomed the news: "I am delighted that the Government has agreed to fund a modular Cath Lab at University Hospital Waterford. This is a product of a long process embarked upon by campaigners in the South East. It will take a little time to deploy as planning permission will be needed, but if delivered, it represents a massive step for-
ward for patients in the South East. “The deployment of a modular Lab could significantly enhance capacity at UHW. 30% of all patients diagnosed will need a cardiac intervention. These interventions can also be carried out in a fully staffed and equipped modular Lab. “While a modular Lab would not provide 24/7 emergency cardiac care for patients in the South East it would represent a step forward. The only long-term sustainable solution is a second permanent Lab and full provision of 24/7 emergency cardiac care at UHW.” In the meantime a mobile lab will remain on site at UHW. n
We examined her again but this time the situation looked much graver. I explained that she was very weak and it was only a 50-50 chance of making it… Without hesitation they said go for it… so we set her up on a drip and ran blood tests. It showed what we suspected… her red blood count was very low, she was extremely anaemic and was teetering on organ failure. We hospitalised her, gave her what we could but she didn’t respond… We put Chilli to sleep this morning in the arms of her very devoted owner. There was no pain and she slipped peacefully into a deeper and deeper sleep. After a minute or two, Chilli's owner began to tell me how Chilli had saved her life as she herself suffered from severe depression several years ago, and it was Chilli who helped her through the dark days… or more so the endless nights as she went on to explain. She would lie on the couch listless, lifeless and Chilli would come over and lie her head on her lap and just sit with her. Chilli cajoled her into getting up and helped her through the desolate times. It took time but she began to regain her strength and has come back to full health. It was a heart-warming story in the midst of a grieving for a true friend. The honesty and kindness Chilli had given all her life was returned time and again by a grateful, brave and courageous lady who loved her so much she let her go. Two noble spirits. n

Rosslare in the spotlight Local TD James Browne has demanded action to secure the future of Rosslare Europort and Wexford railway line during a recent Dáil debate. At present, the Dublin to Rosslare corridor does not hold core status within the European Union’s transport network, which is known as TEN-T. TenT status opens up access to special EU funding supports for designated transport links. As well as receiving EU financial support, other parts of the EU have reaped the rewards of core status thanks to increased private investment. Speaking during a Dáil debate with Transport Minister Shane Ross, Deputy Browne challenged the Minister to anticipate upgrading Rosslare Europort to a Tier One port, to put the Port into a stand-alone port company and to make the Port and the Dublin to Rosslare railway line part of the EU’s core TEN-T network. “Rosslare offers a key route to continental Europe. With the ever increasing likelihood of a hard Brexit, there is growing concern over the security of access to the UK land-bridge.
Currently, 80% by volume of goods leaving Ireland for the continent use this land-bridge. If access to this land-bridge is lost or restricted Ireland will need an alternative route to get our goods to the continent. Rosslare Europort and the railway line connecting it needs investment to offset the threat of a hard Brexit,” Deputy Browne explained. “We need to see the future of our country’s key transport assets secured. We can do this by making the Belfast to Rosslare corridor a core route within the EU’s TEN-T programme, by upgrading the Rosslare Europort to Tier One status and by placing the port in a stand-alone company.” Sinn Féin general election candidate, Cllr Johnny Mythen, put forward a motion at the July meeting of Wexford Co. Council calling on “a representative of Iarnrod Eireann to address this Council on the current and future plans for the rail link between Gorey and Rosslare and the plans they have for the future development of the port. Taking into consideration the cancelling of the
winter services by the Oscar Wilde Ferry to Cherbourg and Roscoff, and if they have a concrete plan for Rosslare Europort, post Brexit.” He added, "Rosslare Europort needs an investment of up to €50 million or more for a major upgrade that will equip it to handle the ships of the future. It is Ireland's second busiest in terms of ship visits and freight, and is designated as one of only five ports of national significance in the N a t i o n a l P o r t s P o l i c y. Upgrading should entail deepening the existing berth to handle deeper ro-ro ships as well as the construction of a new berth on the reclaimed land that would have enough space capable of a ro-ro ramp for deeper water.” He continued: "It's very clear that Iarnród Éireann has no long-term plans regarding the Rosslare to Dublin line. Wexford Co. Council made a submission to Iarnród Éireann on what’s needed and Chief Executive Tom Enright met its CEO and had been given an assurance that the line was being looked at." n

A local contributor looks at life today in Enniscorthy and beyond summer madness The recent fires at Curracloe Beach and Vinegar Hill demonstrate the dangers of the present drought, which hopefully will have diminished somewhat by the time you read these words. As this column is being written there is no evidence that anything deliberate caused these fires but the fact that they happened underlines how careful we should be in the current climate. The idea that anyone would even consider having a barbeque or lighting a fire next or near to grass or other undergrowth is simply crazy. In fact, even parking a car, after a journey of a few miles, on burned out grass is deadly dangerous. The heat generated by the vehicle can easily ignite everything around it and cause a disaster. Our emergency services reacted promptly and effectively to the above mentioned near disasters and there has been well deserved praise for their efforts. Paul Kehoe TD, local public representative and Minister for Defence, also played a role. His intervention brought the army helicopters to the scene which was of tremendous assistance to the fire fighters on the ground. Local farmers also made a huge contribution in the battle against the flames. Great credit is due to
all and the message for all of us is to be careful and responsible. Fianna Fail ConVention Fianna Fail held their general election convention early in July. They selected two candidates, outgoing TD James Browne from Enniscorthy and Councillor Lisa McDonald from Wexford town. Gorey and New Ross areas have been left without any Fianna Fail candidate. It will be interesting to see how this pans out when the election takes place. Will the electorate in those areas turn their back on Fianna Fail as a result of this, therefore weakening the party’s ambition of regaining their second seat in Wexford. Ironically, Fianna Fail’s decision to ignore New Ross may assist Mick Wallace in holding his seat, that is if he decides to stand at all. Rumour has it that the Independent TD may have been tiring of the system and may decide to hang up his boots. However, a wide-open New Ross electoral area might make his mind up for him. At national level it appears that the only party which doesn’t want an election is Fianna Fail. Fine Gael are bullish, particularly in view of recent opinion polls and their own private party polls. They seem to be doing everything they can to pro-

View from the Hill voke Fianna Fail to walk away from the supply and confidence agreement. However hard they try, regardless of the number of insults and belittling statements, Micheal Martin takes it all and makes conciliatory statements to the effect that Fianna Fail is willing to sign up to a further agreement. The once great party of De Valera is rolling over and taking it all. Sinn Fein are the only party openly pushing for a run to the polls. They have the advantage of being in opposition, being not tied down by any agreements, and being free to attack both the government party, the independents in government and Fianna Fail.
Looking at the scene it would appear that we will have to wait for some time for Fianna Fail to find it’s mojo again and pull the rug. It’s quite possible that some of the younger guns in the party may lose patience with their leader’s stance and mount a serious challenge to the present policy. Finally, this scribe doesn’t go along with the mantra which we hear from so-called experts to the effect that the public don’t want an election. There is little evidence for that. A heck of a lot of people would love an election to attempt to clear the air. What they would do with their vote is another matter.
smart Phones We hear a lot nowadays about how smart phones are making people unsociable. We are told that it is terrible to travel on a bus or train or go into a waiting room and nobody will talk to you because they are stuck into smart phones. Well that may be the case, and it is a fact that some people spend more time than they should playing with their phone. Having said that I dispute the thesis that the phones are killing conversation. I am around long enough to remember the days when we travelled on trains and busses and no one had a smart phone. But then, as now, people didn’t talk to you, unless you were unlucky enough to get stuck beside some nuisance or nosey parker, who wanted to know your business. Getting back to why people didn’t talk to each other the reason is simple. People would have a newspaper or book which was a convenient way to shut out the world. The same applied in waiting rooms or other places where people gathered. I can truly say that most people entering a restaurant alone, in the days before smart phones, would carry a paper or magazine. So therefore, there is nothing new about this. The only thing new is the phone.
PoPe’s Visit Many people from Enniscorthy and County Wexford will travel to Dublin or Knock for the visit of Pope Francis. The Catholic Church has been gripped by a lot of scandal in relation to sexual abuse and more significantly the cover-ups practised by those clergy in authority. Issues such as the Tuam babies and the wholesale export of babies, with full official approval, are also a sad reflection on the role of the Church over many decades. Since his elevation to the role of Pope, publicly at least, Pope Francis has shown himself to be a reasonably reforming Pontiff. That doesn’t mean that he can change things overnight. He has to contend with a system within the church built up over centuries, which by it’s nature is conservative, secretive, and indeed quite sinister at times. It is a big call for one individual to change all that but hopefully Pope Francis will have some success. Hopefully all those who do venture to Dublin or Knock will enjoy the experience and that Pope Francis will get a good welcome to Ireland. n We are often asked: Who is the “View from the Hill” columnist? All we can say is that the author’s surname is NOT Doyle!

Volkswagen T-RoC the Volkswagen t-roC is a new addition to the Volkswagen range and plugs the gap for a compact crossover. With pricing starting from €24,750, the new Volkswagen t-roC slots in below the popular Volkswagen tiguan family suV. it’s positioned as a sportier, compact model and it’s clear the designers had some fun with this one. The T-ROC is easily one of the most interesting and playful looking models in the Volkswagen range. In the metal, it’s like a slightly taller hatchback with coupé-like styling, especially towards the rear. But the curves are balanced out with extra plastic cladding around the wheel arches, sills and bumpers, adding more
attitude to what is a very expressive design. The T-ROC is also the first Volkswagen SUV that will be available to order in two-tone paintwork with a contrasting roof, A-pillars and exterior mirror covers. Inside much of the switchgear is shared with other Volkswagen models and a plastic dashboard insert adds interest. This was black pearl in the test car, but there are other colours available. The quality in the cabin is good, but the interior of a Golf for similar money feels a bit more plush. In terms of technology and in-car entertainment, the T-ROC scores well with touchscreens with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto available and a very impressive digital instrument panel.

The Volkswagen T-ROC is a five seater, though realistically four will be most comfortable because the middle seat in the rear is quite narrow. There is good accommodation up front and the two rear footwells are a reasonable size too, with lots of headroom all round. The boot is good at 445 litres but opting for a model with a spare wheel will eat into that volume. In Ireland the T-ROC is available with a 1.0-litre TSI petrol (115hp), 1.5-litre TSI EVO petrol (150hp), a 1.6-litre TDI diesel (115hp) or a 2.0-litre TDI diesel (150hp). The 2.0-litre diesel is available exclusively with 4MOTION all wheel drive. A 6-speed manual gearbox comes as standard but there
are also 7-speed DSG automatic gearboxes available. My test car was powered by the 1.5-litre turbo petrol unit with 150hp and it’s a powerful and refined option for the TROC. Fuel consumption over a week of driving was about 6.6l/100kms. The Volkswagen T-ROC is built on the same MQB platform as the Golf and other Volkswagen products. On the road the T-ROC is smooth and confident, with well-weighted steering and a fun, agile feel. It doesn’t feel as hunkered down on the road in corners as a hatchback, so there is a bit more body roll. It’s generally comfortable but a firm edge to the suspension will transmit some bumps into the cabin over

New action plan for Online Safety – Kehoe minister with responsibility for defence, Paul kehoe td, has said the role of parents, students and teachers from Wexford will be essential in the rollout of a new action plan for online safety. the plan sets out 25 specific actions over the next 18 months as part of a bid to crack down on cyber crime. The measures include: n Legislating for new criminal offences to tackle online harassment and predators n The creation of a new online “youth hub” which will act as a central point for young people n Introduce a new online safety module to support teachers n Provide 65 anti-bullying training sessions nationwide for parents Minister Kehoe said: “While social media is an excellent tool to learn and build friendships – we must also be aware of the dangers posed by online strangers. Earlier this year, I circulated cyber safety booklets to schools and libraries around the county to highlight the risks associated with social media … While so many young people are responsible online – please don’t ever be afraid to speak to someone – whether it be a parent, a teacher, or a friend – if you have cause for concern. Anyone interested in obtaining a copy of the cyber safety booklet can contact my office.” n

“Plan needed to avoid chaos” Wexford TD James Browne has called on Wexford County Council to draw up a detailed traffic and community plan for Oylegate village. Deputy Browne’s comments come in advance of the much-anticipated opening of the Enniscorthy bypass. The plan is needed as the opening of Enniscorthy Bypass “will almost certainly cause significant tailbacks and split the village of Oylegate in half”, according to deputy Browne.

Muskogee and its hinterland are chiefly agricultural areas and in the main it’s cattle country according to Mayor Coburn who explained that their trip to Ireland, and in particular to the South East, was initiated and instigated by Sean Murphy and Barrow Valley Church, an organisation based mainly in the Carlow area who cherish old-fashioned Christian values of communities helping each other. And the main object of this transatlantic visit, according to the Mayor, was to ‘develop work-
ing relationships between our two communities and to meet with anyone who would like to meet us to see how we can help and be of service to each other’. During the reception I spoke with two women in the Muskogee delegation who told
me that they were Cherokee Irish, their great, great grandfather having left Ireland and ended up in Oklahoma where he met and married the daughter of a Cherokee Chief. A project with merit and potential I have no doubt. – Maria Nolan

Happy Birthday Wells House! on sunday 22nd July, Wells house & gardens celebrated its 6th birthday with style and elegance hosting an old-time garden Party on the front lawn with members of enniscorthy historical re-enactment society and members of the great War society in period costume. In the six years since Wells opened its great house and gardens to the public its popularity as a venue has gone from strength to strength making it one of the most visited tourist attractions of Ireland’s Ancient East, and not without just cause. Ulrich and Sabine Rosler have transformed Wells, not just the house and the gardens, but they have extended their imaginations to include the magical Fairy Woodland Walks, the Pets’ Corner, the Falconry and fabulous Children’s Playground. There is something every week at Wells from Teddy Bears Picnics, to Mad Hatters Tea Parties, to Open-air Theatre, to Battle Re-enactments, to Vintage Fairs, to Culture Carnivals, to
the enniscorthy art trail e.a.t. is a new and exciting festival promoting art within the town of enniscorthy. The art trail will coincide with The Rockin’ Food Festival during the August Bank Holiday weekend from Friday 3rd to Sunday 5th. The E.A.T. festival uses vacant and existing buildings within the town, reimagining what a gallery space is; it does not always have to be a white-walled cubed venue. The trail takes place in different locations – from disused property on Slaney Street and Castle Street to existing used spaces such as St Mary’s Church and The Presentation Centre, with venues being open from 12 noon to 4pm each day.
Eight professional artists will showcase their art with the opportunity for the public to meet, ask questions and purchase work. Free workshops, talks, music and art performances along with an interactive, creative doodle space will be on offer as events to attend. Artists Oonagh Latchford, Seven Victor, Lisa Byrne, Larry Dunne, Emma Howe, Martina Furlong, Kate Tyrrell and N a d i a C o r r i d a n a re t h e selected fine artists on show with the addition of musician Noel Quaid, and all can be found on the Enniscorthy Arts Trail. enactments are a kind of historical osmosis whereby children, young people and even adults are learning about the past without even knowing it. Bestselling author Carmel harrington was at enniscorthy library last month as part of the library’s Best summer reads 2018 Programme. Carmel was engaging and interactive and as interesting as ever as she spoke to the audience about this season’s favourites including novels by many of her own close friends and colleagues. Many of those on Carmel’s ‘must read’ list are works by authors who have attended or will attend this year ’s Wexford Literary Festival in Enniscorthy from 2nd to 4th November, authors like the very popular crime-
writers Liz Nugent, Shane Dunphy, Jane Casey and Catherine Ryan Howard and the historical fiction writer Hazel Gaynor. Marian Keyes, Cathy Kelly, Andrea Mara, Jojo Moyes Claudia Carroll and Emma Hannigan were high on her list of recommendations especially the latter with Carmel asking people to read Letters to my Daughters even though she hasn’t been able to bring herself to yet. Carmel strongly advised The Tattooist of Auschwitz by Heather Morris, ‘a beautiful love story’, she said, ‘in the
midst of all the horror that was Nazi Germany’. The Handmaids Tale by Margaret Atwood and Big Little Lies by Liane Moriarty are also ‘great reads’ according to the lady who is looking forward to the launch of her much anticipated seventh novel, A Thousand Roads Home, in October. And it appears she isn’t the only one looking forward to seeing it in print as there are copies pre-booked already. An excellent insight into some great summer reads – thanks to Carmel and Enniscorthy Library. – Maria Nolan

Masterplan for Wexford Wexford County Council’s ambitious plans for the comprehensive re-development of a 10 acre iconic site in the heart of Wexford town took a significant step forward in July when the Council presented the draft masterplan for the overall development of trinity Wharf to a meeting of the members of Wexford Borough district. The Trinity Wharf site overlooks Wexford Harbour and is close to the Crescent and Wexford Town centre. Wexford County Council recently acquired the entire site and Chief Executive Tom Enright has secured the support of the Council in developing the lands into a high-quality business park to include a mix of modern office space, hotel accommodation, multi-storey carparking, a landmark cultural and events multi-use building and 60 residential units. The proposed development also includes the provision of a 61-berth marina and a new boardwalk linking Trinity Wharf to Paul Quay and the Crescent. The development of Trinity
Wharf is an integral part of the Council’s overall plan for the long- term regeneration and enhancement of the Wexford town centre, creating a new urban quarter that will act as a focal point for the south of Wexford town and provide it with new links to the Crescent and town centre area. It will provide much-needed attractive, cost-effective and modern office space within the county and includes commercial and residential development together with a new centre for cultural and civic events and recreational and tourism activities. It is estimated that Trinity Wharf has the capacity to create over 1,000 jobs in the technology and financial services sectors over the next 5 to 10 years. Presenting the draft masterplan at the meeting of the Members of Wexford Borough District, the Council’s Head of Special Projects, Brian Galvin, outlined the main elements of the overall plan and the projected timeline for its delivery. “Site development works,
including access, roads, footpaths, lighting, water and ICT services will be constructed by Wexford County Council,” said Mr. Galvin, adding, “The Council will also develop the public realm, cultural and multi-event spaces detailed in the Plan, while the offices and commercial buildings will be delivered through a series of public-private partnerships.” The Plan is expected to be placed on public display informally within the next few weeks to allow the public to view the overall draft masteplan and offer their comments. Following this, the Masterplan will be finalised and an application for consent submitted to An Bord Pleanala for approval, a process which includes a statutory public consultation procedure. A planning decision from An Bord Pleanala on the Trinity Wharf development is expected by Spring/ Summer 2019 and, if approved, construction is expected to commence by the end of 2019. n
