comment The Slaney News reached its 100th issue milestone last month. We thank everyone for the nice comments and good wishes expressed, and we look forward to our next 100 issues and continuing to serve our readers and advertisers well into the future. As a thank you to our loyal readers, we will be giving away lots of Free tickets to local concerts, shows, etc on our Facebook page "Slaney News" over the next few weeks, so make sure to check our Facebook page on a regular basis. See more details on page 10. In recent days news of the imminent closure of 11 Post Offices around Co. Wexford has been a worrying development. Sinn Fein has tabled a motion for the next meeting of Wexford Co. Council seeking support for the prevention of Post Office closures and the long-term survival and prosperity of An Post’s network through implementing a new community banking service to be operated by An Post in all post offices throughout the country along the lines of the New Zealand Post Kiwibank model. Sinn Féin is seeking the prevention of Post Office closures while a Kiwibank model for the Irish Post Office network is developed. It will be interesting to see how Councillors from all parties vote on this motion. – Frank Corcoran

FERNS COMPUTER SERVICES
This month I would like to remind you of the various measures you should take to ensure the security of your bank account and transactions with respect to your personal or business emails. There has been an increase in the number of cases where attempts were made for funds to be sent to fraudsters’ bank accounts and in such situations the funds would most often be irretrievable thereafter. Keep in mind – Email accounts can be easily compromised and unsolicited payment request emails can be sent with illegitimate beneficiary details. Cyber Smart tips: • Be very cautious about any unexpected emails which request payments, regardless of if the email appears to be from somebody in your organisation. • Always verify payment requests directly with the member of staff requesting them, by using the exact details on file to ensure that the request is genuine. You should call the person on their landline phone. • Employees should check privacy settings on social media and employee information displayed on the organisation's website. • Do not open any suspicious emails containing attachments or links. • Don't trust anybody who calls you and offers to fix your computer. The "I'm from Microsoft and I'm here to help" scam has gone too far. Stay sceptical, don't let anybody else into your computer, unless you know who they are. • If your bank details have been compromised as a result of a cyberattack, you must notify the bank as soon as you are aware. • Besides the above tips, always make sure all software on your computer is up-to-date, including your OS. And if you don’t already have it, install a cybersecurity program. Ferns Computer Services has been in business in Ferns since May 2007. Established by David Pohludek, it has a huge clientele base all over Co. Wexford and beyond.

St Senan’s Parish, Enniscorthy, launches 2019 Calendar
Pic: Dee O’Leary.
In August, the forward-thinking St Senan’s Parish, Enniscorthy, officially launched its much-anticipated 2019 calendar. L-R: Liz Wildes (who donated the photos in the calendar), Cllr John O’Rourke, Bishop Denis Brennan, Fr Paddy Banville Adm, Albert O’Callaghan, Cllr Willie Kavanagh, Cllr Kathleen Codd-Nolan, Fr Odhrán Furlong Adm, Jimmy Gahan.
Update on by-passes information obtained by Minister paul Kehoe shows significant progress is being made on the n25 new Ross Bypass and the M11 Gorey to Enniscorthy scheme. In correspondence with the minister, Michael Nolan, the Chief Executive of Transport Infrastructure Ireland, confirmed that the New Ross bypass is anticipated to open to traffic in quarter two of next year and the M11 Gorey to Enniscorthy scheme is expected to open in quarter three. “This is welcome news…” Minister Kehoe said. “Investment in our roads needs to be a top priority and I will continue to lobby government to ensure the people of Wexford have the best possible transport infrastructure.” Separately, Transport Infrastructure Ireland provided an update on the pro-

Minister Paul Kehoe TD
posed N11/N25 Oilgate to Rosslare project. This includes the N25 Rosslare Harbour Access Road and an N11 bypass of Oilgate. TII said the scheme is “included amongst a number of major national road schemes that were identified for progression through pre-appraisal and early planning during 2018. In this regard, TII has provided an allocation of €50,000 to Wexford County Council this year for the N11/N25 Oilgate to Rosslare Harbour project.” n
i recently attended the funeral Mass of Mai O’toole of 81 Slaney view park in St. Senan’s parish Church, celebrated by Rev. Fr. paddy Banville. When Mai was born she was profoundly and seriously disabled and the medical personnel at the time stated that she had a life expectancy of some two years. When she passed away on the 10th August 2018, she had lived for 59 years. It is a remarkable story of tender loving care by her late mother, Breda O’Toole; she got great support from her husband Jim, who adored Mai. Breda passed away 12 years ago. It was then that Mai’s sister, Catherine, stepped in and took over managing her care, with the assistance of caring Home Helps. Most of us in the local community are not aware that such sacrifices are made by ordinary people who as a result become truly extraordinary. It was Mai’s mother’s determination that her daughter would not become a number in some caring institution and the decision was made that she would look after Mai in her own home. She dedicated her life to her care; and she had other children seeking her attention and devotion.
It is truly remarkable the sacrifices some people undertake to nurse and nurture a physically impaired child, a child who becomes an adult without ever communicating by speech and was completely dependent for everything we take for granted. Some years ago I had on occasion visited Mai’s home and I saw first-hand the dedication and love lavished on her by her mother; I also saw the effect such care and attention was having on her. She was forever on duty and she bound her life to her daughter; I’m sure it could be said that she had no care -free days. While Mai didn’t develop in the conventional sense it was clear that she recognised and loved those close to her. The proof of the care and affection she received was the long life she lived after the early prognosis of some two years of life. Father Banville is due appreciation for the preparation of Mai’s eulogy at her funeral Mass. He devoted as much time to it as he would to the praise of the most high-profile parishioner.
St Senan’s parish, Enniscorthy, officially launched the 2019 edition of its popular calendar at a wellattended event in templeshannon Community Centre last month. Thanks to the wonderful generosity of local photographer Liz Wildes, who donated all the photos, and the high quality printing work of C&R Print, a superb calendar is now available to buy from St Senan’s Parish Office; St Senan’s Church after all Masses; O'Callaghan Centra, Templeshannon; St Aidan's Parish Office Shop; Liz Wildes and can also be ordered online. Through the generosity of many contributors over recent years the parish debt has been reduced to just under €20,000 – a huge achievement. The proceeds from the 2019 calendar will help reduce that debt even further. n
hEAvEn’S vERy SpECiAl Child A meeting was held quite far from earth! It’s time again for another birth. Said the Angels to the Lord above, This Special Child will need much care. Her progress may be very slow, Accomplishments she may not show. And she will require extra care From the folks she meets down there. She may not run or laugh or play, Her thoughts may seem far away, In many ways she won’t adapt, And she’ll be known as handicapped. So let’s be careful where she’s sent, We want her life to be content. Please Lord, find the parents who Will do a special job for you. They will not realise right away The leading role they’re asked to play, But with this child sent from above Comes stronger faith and richer love. And soon they’ll know the privilege given In caring for their gift from heaven. Their precious charge, so meek and mild, Is HEAVEN’S VERY SPECIAL CHILD. …Enda Massionilla. – S O’D.

CBS Graduates recount 50 years
UK ambassador to visit Co. Wexford
thirty-one graduates of CBS Secondary School, Enniscorthy, from 1968, came from all over ireland, the uK and the uS in early August for celebration at the Riverside park hotel of fifty years since they graduated. Cllr. Tony Dempsey, mayor of Wexford, a former TD, former manager of Co. Wexford hurling teams, a teacher of Leaving Cert students of that time, addressed the group, saying that because of his enjoyable experience as a teacher there, he switched from pursuing a career in medicine to a career in education. Anthony (Tony) Britton, also a teacher at the school, who was one of the graduates, spoke on behalf of his fellow organisers of the celebrations Eddie Nangle (also a retired teacher from the school), Philip Howlin (Pfizer), Willie French (IFA Farm Centre, Enniscorthy) and John Dunne (retired regional manager, Bank of Ireland). He asked the attendance to remember thirteen of the fiftyone-member classes of that year who had passed away. They w e r e : N e i l D e l a n e y, P a t Dempsey, Larry Doyle, Michael Jordan, Danny McCarthy, Frank Martin, Nicholas Moran, Pierce Murphy, Patrick Nolan, Sean Nolan, Nick O’Donnell, Fr. Frank Stafford and Jimmy Wickham. The graduates, many of whom no longer recognised each other at first sight, gathered in groups and recalled and recounted Christian Brother and lay teachers, experiences at the school and their life experiences, and posed for photographs and shared contact details. Many were from
Enniscorthy town and more had cycled each day from the rural hinterland ten miles away. Some had come from other schools in the county. The attendance included: Stephen Bowe, Wexford (medical doctor), Ollie Kehoe, London (former regional bank manager Bank of Ireland, UK), Sean Mythen, Willie French, Philip Howlin, Anthony Britton, Pat Kickham (Enniscorthy), John Dunne, Paddy Dunne, Pat Flynn, Ciaran Barry (industrial relations), John Rossiter (Customs and Excise) , Michael Dillon, Philip Redmond, John Clifford, Noel Dempsey (The Ballagh), Michael Freeman (Rosslare), George Long (Galway), Nick Mernagh (IDA, New York and Dublin), Myles Walsh, Jimmy Breen, Pat Flynn, Martin Ryan, John McCabe, Simon Lambert (Glenbrien), Patrick Gahan, Niall O’Byrne (Cooladine) and Tom Furlong (Clonroche). Among those who expressed inability to attend were Paddy Winter (Wexford), Patrick O’Gorman (Wexford) and Fintan O’Connor (London). n

Co. Wexford will this month host the British Ambassador to ireland, Mr Robin Barnett. According to local Minister Paul Kehoe, Ambassador Barnett will tour parts of the county, including a visit to Rosslare port. The visit is scheduled for Friday, September 14. Minister Kehoe said he is keen for Ambassador Barnett to meet representatives from the port and the local community given its strategic importance. Such a visit is even more important, Minister Kehoe said, in light of the potential challenges posed by Brexit. “Wexford and the UK have longstanding connections so I was delighted that Ambassador Barnett accepted my invitation to visit here,” Minister Kehoe said. “I have raised my concerns about the impact Brexit will have on Rosslare at the Cabinet table. A huge amount of work is being done across government and I am keen to ensure the needs of Wexford are front and centre of our response.” Minister Kehoe said the

visit will allow for how he and the ambassador can consider strengthening the links between Wexford and the UK in terms of business, community and investment. Ahead of the visit, Minister Kehoe said it is a priority of his to persuade ambassadors, ministers and other senior politicians to visit Wexford. “This is another opportunity to strengthen ties and put on display what Wexford has to offer,” he added. The visit will take place just months after a similar visit by the Australian Ambassador to Ireland Richard Andrews. n
Beneath My Angels Wings local charity organisation, Beneath My Angels Wings, recently hosted a thanksgiving coffee morning in the presentation Centre where it presented a Cuddle Cot to Wexford General hospital and received a donation of €1,000 from "Ollie’s Mission" who recently ran in the minimarathon to raise funds for Monamolin community.
Beneath My Angels Wings raised €300 on the day and thanks all sponsors and the people of the Enniscorthy district who continue to support it. Thanks also to Tesco Ireland which has a scheme in place in all three shops in the county to support the cause of getting a second Cuddle Got for Wexford General before Christmas in Ollie’s memory. n
There were little warlocks, wizards and witches of all ages and sizes all over the place with crooked hats and crooked wands roaming in the gardens and through the woodland paths looking as though they belong to Slytherin, Ravenclaw and Gryffindor and even Hedwig, Harry’s beautiful Owl put in an appearance.
Another wonderful idea from Wells who have definitely discovered the Ministry of Magic and one that can certainly be worked on to provide those attending with drama, adventure, mystery and fantasy. Can’t wait for next year’s event! – Maria Nolan
Wizards, Wands & Wonder at Wells Stately Wells house was the perfect backdrop for yet another fantastic notion on the part of owner Sabine Rosler and her innovative marketing team spearheaded by daughter of the house niamh and Manager Maria Walsh. The Harry Potter experience on 31st July drew crowds
from as far away as Cork, Dublin and Laois who thronged to see the very popular JK Rowling’s characters from the books and films hurrying across the front lawn or whispering and swapping spells in the flower garden or posing for photos with the myriad of children in Hogwart’s uniforms and sorting hats.
Left: Harry Potter. Right: Dumbledore and Bellatrix Lestrange. Below: Hagrid, Hermione Granger, Minerva McGonagall, Ron Weasley. Pics: Maria Nolan.
I met the Wizard himself Harry Potter on the front steps flanked by the fun-loving, redheaded Ron Weasley, the demure and gifted Hermione Granger and everyone’s lovable giant Rubeus Hagrid with H e a d m i s t re s s M i n e r v a McGonagall casting a stern eye on proceedings and such was the expert casting and the Wells facade resembling strongly the Hogwart’s School of Witchcraft and Wizardry I kinda half expected to see flying broomsticks overhead or be knocked over by a wayward Quaffle or Golden Snitch. Round the back in the flower garden I happened on the wise, venerable, greybearded Dumbledore and the bewitching, spirited Bellatrix Lestrange looking very wicked indeed. Talking of good casting this one could be a stand-in any day for actress Helena Bonham Carter who plays Bellatrix in the films.

Ballads of Battle Seamus Rafter Commemoration
yet another fantastic night of entertainment on 24th August at the presentation Centre organised by Rory O’Connor and Moira O’Gorman as part of the series of events to commemorate the 220th Anniversary of the 1798 Rising. the Battle of the Ballads was all about the songs of 1798 as niall Wall mused, ‘Songs and ballads are the original literature. that’s how deeds were remembered and stories were told and passed on long before they were written down.’ The popular Boolavogue Rebels – Paul O’Reilly, Padraig and Bridget Sinnott and Tom Murphy began with a ‘98 March, followed by a song called In ‘98. After which they moved on to cover the Napoleonic era with The Rights of Man and the Isle of St. Helena, the American Civil War with a song called, By The Hush Me Boys, the Battle of Aughrim and finishing up with the Battle of Glenmalure – Follow Me Up To Carlow. Maree Lyng and Niall Wall at the Ballads of Battle. Pic: Maria Nolan.
The Wexford Traditional Singers (Niall Wall, Paddy Berry, John Ennis, Ronan Berry) held the audience spellbound with favourites like Little Jimmy Murphy, The Croppy Boy, Bagenal Harvey’s Lament, and Kelly the Boy from Killanne. These guys with their rich vocals and even richer repetoire and powerful delivery would make the hairs stand on the back of your neck, you could hear a pin drop in the entranced auditorium. And to complete a wonderful evening, the Carrigbyrne Pikemen’s Choir gave rousing renditions of The Rising of the Moon and the Wexford anthem, Boolavogue, along with a couple of excellent sea shanties and hymns for good measure. A thoroughly enjoyable event and a most fitting tribute to the memory of those who fought and died in 1798 and Enniscorthy re-enactors were once again on hand to add colour and pageantry to the occasion. – Maria Nolan
plans are well advanced
the death of Enniscorthy patriot Seamus Rafter on September 13th, 1918, from injuries sustained in a bomb blast some days earlier brought such an outpouring of grief across County Wexford that following Requiem Mass in St. Aidan’s Cathedral, Enniscorthy, his remains were carried shoulder high from the Cathedral to their final resting place in Ballindaggin Cemetery, a distance of some 7 miles. hundreds of pall-bearers took it in turn to carry the coffin which was flanked by an honour guard of the irish volunteers while thousands lined the route of the cortage on the sad and lonely journey to the cemetery.
Seamus Rafter’s death and funeral, believed to be the largest ever seen in County Wexford, will be outlined in an exhibition on the life and times of the Monalee, Ballindaggin, born patriot which opens in Enniscorthy’s Athenaeum Hall on Sunday, September 9th., following commemoration ceremonies in the town marking the 100th anniversary of his death. The exhibition is being compiled by archivists from Wexford County Council and will feature many heretofore unpublished pictures and articles of historical interest surrounding the Enniscorthy town based publican who conducted a thriving business in premises now occupied by Niall Holohan and his family in Slaney Place. It was here Seamus Rafter died after receiving horrific injuries in a bomb explosion which occurred in Antwerp House, Mary Street, some nine days earlier. He and a number of his republican colleagues were priming homemade bombs for use against occupying forces when one exploded prematurely resulting in Rafter sustaining seri-
ous injuries from which he subsequently died. The 100th anniversary of his death will be commemorated in Enniscorthy on Sunday, September 9th, when Church and State gather to honour the memory of one of the town’s favourite sons. Bishop Denis Brennan will be Chief Celebrant at a concelebrated Mass of Remembrance in St. Aidan’s Cathedral at 12.30pm on that day at which he will be assisted by Rev. Fr. Odhran Furlong, Administrator, St. Aidan’s Cathedral and Rev. Fr. James Fegan, Parish Priest of Ballindaggin, the birth place of Seamus Rafter. Minister of State with Responsibility for Defence, Paul Kehoe T.D., will represent the Government at the ceremonies during which he will review a Guard of Honour drawn from the 3rd Infantry Battalion. They will participate in a parade from St. Aidan’s Cathedral, headed by a Colour Party, also from the 3rd Infantry Battalion, to the Rafter Memorial in Abbey Square where a wreath will be laid and tributes paid by invited speakers. Further wreaths will be laid as the
Parade passes The Athenaeum Hall where Seamus Rafter and a party of Volunteers struck a blow for Irish Freedom in Easter Week 1916 and at the home where he died, now Holohan’s Public House, in Slaney Place. Here military honours will also be rendered before the sounding of The Last Post by a bugler and piper from the Army School of Music. Members of Wexford County Council and Enniscorthy Municipal District will join family members of Seamus Rafter at the Mass of Remembrance in St. Aidan’s Cathedral during which UN Veterans will provide a military presence. Other uniformed bodies will also be in attendance and, along with relatives of those who took part in the 1916 Rising in the town, will participate in the parade through the streets of the town. The commemoration ceremonies are being jointly organised by Enniscorthy Municipal District and Enniscorthy and District Chamber of Commerce and are designed to highlight the contribution made by Seamus Rafter to the cause of Irish Freedom. n

New life for old courthouse
Cllr Keith doyle has been informed that Wexford County Council has appointed an architect to refurbish Enniscorthy’s old courthouse. Originally opened in 1820, the historic courthouse served as a courthouse for almost 200 years. It has been vacant since 2006 when it was closed by the OPW for refurbishment. This refurbishment was never carried out and the OPW subsequently handed the courthouse over to Wexford Co. Council.
“The old courthouse is one of Enniscorthy’s most important historical buildings and sites. I’m delighted that an architect has been appointed and that the building is to be restored and a new use is to be found for it”. The first use is likely to be as office accommodation for the Council staff currently working in the Market House while that building is itself being refurbished. After that temporary use, the Courthouse, consisting of approx 30 office spaces,
will be rented out on a commercial basis. There is currently a shortage of high quality, modern office accommodation in town which the refurbished Courthouse will help fill. “Since becoming Chair of Wexford County Council, it has been a priority of mine to bring vacant and dilapidated buildings in Enniscorthy back into use. The old Courthouse has been left vacant and dilapidated for too long… Once restored it will be a major addi-

Bringing the best of the past into the future

Enniscorthy historical Reenactment Society was delighted to be invited to Ar mBreacha – Fr. Jim Finn’s house of Storytelling at

us that makes us uniquely Irish. Fr. Finn’s storytelling house extends the traditional Irish welcome to all who enter it.
You, the visitor, are invited to come inside and pull up to the fire, partake of a cup of tea and share your story with all present. The fireside and the cuppa are synonymous with an Irish welcome. In front of the hearth all are equal and your story and your past is as significant as the person sitting next to you, no matter how small or how large your tale is, because it tells who you are and from whence you came and all are interested in knowing you. At this beautifully restored and maintained house on the slopes of Sliabh Bui, EHRS reenacted a 1798 eviction and execution of Fear an Ti – one John Redmond, suspected of being a United Irishmen sympathiser and the skirmish which followed between local rebels and a Redcoat Regiment from nearby Carnew. With many young visitors present, Fr. Finn said how thrilled he was with the pageant which brings history and our past to life for the next generation. Afternoon tea was served with delicious cakes and breads all home baked by the Ar mBreacha ladies. The House of Storytelling is open every Tuesday night and is a free event and is most definitely worth a visit. – Maria Nolan

Swinging Time Slaneyside Now that the dust has finally settled on the most successful Rockin’Food Festival to date, can I take the opportunity to put pen to paper to extol its praises. And many they were as the 5th August bank holiday food and music festival is lauded as the ‘best yet’. The crowds at Market Square and on the streets of the town were reminiscent of the halcyon days of the Strawberry Fair. The Festival that just keeps on giving has grown and developed beyond expectations in the five short years since its inception due in the main to the ingenious blend of food, music and dance and to the consistent efforts of a very hard-working committee who refuse to rest on their laurels, but rather continue to strive to be better and better. Each year something new and innovative is added to further enhance an already successful event. This year we had the wonderful addition of the Enniscorthy Arts Trails abbreviated appropriately enough to EAT. Organised by Kinsale native Nadja Corrigan and Lisa Byrne and Lar O`Duinn of The Presentation Centre with the latter designing the very attractive and eye-catching brochure. Artists the calibre of Martina Furlong and Oonagh Rochford, along with Nadja, Lisa and Lar exhibited in many of the vacant premises on Slaney Street and Castle Street and in the very beautiful and atmospheric St.
M a r y ’ s C h u rc h a n d T h e Presentation Centre, adding yet another dimension to the packed Festival programme and giving the visitor to the town more to see and do and indeed more to spend their money on. The standard of the music in the local establishments and at Market Square was second to none. My own personal favourites included the Bellefords, a dynamic, classy female trio, The Rocketts, The Class of `58, Deville Rebels and the vivacious and powerful Cherry Devine who really gave it socks at Market Square on the Sunday afternoon. Well done to Richie Cotter, Eamonn Doyle, Roisin Williams, Liam Ellis and Anthony Tinney for their Trojan work behind the scenes making everything look easy and fun. The addition of the Ferris Wheel was a stroke of genius. The Enniscorthy Eye was a major attraction offering magnificent views of the town and hinterland for a mere €4 a ride for adults and €3 for children, along with being a photographer’s paradise, lighting up the evening sky, it was a beacon to all heralding the fact that there was something happening in the town for the weekend. Jean O’Connell of O’Connell Marketing excelled herself with the new addition of the Food Hall where cookery demos were given free of charge by some of the country’s top chefs. Town Manager Liz Hore and
her band of council workers were on hand the entire time and are to be complimented for keeping everything under control and the town looking good throughout and in the wake of the Festival. There were more food and drink stalls than ever before with the most mouth-watering treats, I even managed to down a hot snail or two albeit with trepidation and the cupcakes and doughnuts provided a rainbow of colour. There was a mobile farm on Church Street drawing large crowds – young and youngat-heart – to see the sheep, goats, geese and Dorset pigs. The arrival of the Steam Train on the bank holiday Monday was a major cause of excitement at the train station w i t h re - e n a c t o r s f ro m Enniscorthy Historical Re-enactment Society in period costume adding colour and pageantry amid smoke and stream. Yes indeed, Eric Barron, Maree Lyng and the marvellous Festival Committee can take a well deserved bow on this one, they have created a musical, visual, gastronomic experience for visitor and native alike. With Rock n Rollers from all over Ireland and beyond descending in numbers for a swinging time Slaneyside the town became a kaleidoscope of colour with costumes, hairdos and accessories accentuating the beauty and exquisiteness of a top class Festival. – Maria Nolan

Rory’s Stories a roaring success Pic: Maria Nolan.
Comedy can be a challenging genre and it can be difficult to get it just right but GAA comedian Rory O`Connor struck just the right note at Bellefield GAA Complex on Saturday 28th July appealing to the large audience with his exaggerated depictions of GAA episodes and ethos. Rory, who hails from Ashbourne, has played gaelic football with Donaghmore /Ashbourne Club since he was knee high to a grasshopper and was completely at home at Rapparees/Starlights sending the Bellefield audience into stitches with his satirical portrayal of GAA characters and stories familiar to all of them. Having played for his county at Minor and U-21 level and at every level for his club, Rory has a wealth of material on all aspects of GAA life combined with a natural acting ability and perfect comic delivery. A most confident and likeable character, life hasn’t always been easy for Rory who suffered in the past with a gambling addiction but that is all behind him now thanks to his many friends and teammates who
Organiser eamonn Furlong with Gaa comedian rory O’Connor
were a tremendous help to him at his lowest ebb particularly Andy McEntee, brother of Meath footballer Gerry. And during his comic show he reminds people amidst all the laughter to be conscious of mental health and mental health issues and always remember that `it is ok not to be ok`. As part of his comic routine Rory plays on typical stereotypes like `the dirty cornerback` or `the cocky corner forward` or `the county man` or `the guy who is always injured` and does some club research before going on to put names to the different carica-
tures calling them to the stage and giving the audience much to giggle about. In Bellefield all those singled out for special attention showed themselves to be good sports on and off the field, Padge Skinner Walsh, Ronie Furlong, Tom Wall, Mark Redmond, Ryan Mahon, Johnny Hyland, and our own Rory O`Connor. Well done to Eamonn Furlong and his team who organised the entertaining event and you can find many of Rory’s Stories on Social Media where he has over 60,000 followers. – Maria Nolan
Murphy’s babes beat all A variety of mind-probing, thought-expanding questions set and asked by Quiz Master Extraordinaire, Fintan Kelly, tested even the most seasoned quiz goers among the one-hundred-strong audience at the Enniscorthy Drama Group Table Quiz last month at the IFA Centre. With each of the eight rounds stretching and straining the mental prowess of those participating, none more so than the musical and sporting sections, each corrected and calculated by the diligent Joe Carley and the accurate muinteoir, Annemarie Whelan, the marking was close and competitive with overall winners Tom Murphy’s Babes – Podge Hall,
Sean Hall and Craig Mitchell, emerging only in the closing stages, finishing on a final tally of 69 points and receiving the winning prize of €80 which they most generously donated to Enniscorthy Drama. A fantastic night’s entertainment and great credit to organisers EDG and to all who sponsored raffle prizes and tables. Lovely to see Wexford Literary Festival in attendance, sponsoring 3 tables with Chairperson and author Carmel Harrington and new WLF Committee member and author Shane Dunphy in attendance at what else but the Best-Sellers’ Table and doing quite well coming in at third place – that literature round bringing them
up with top marks. Carmel Harrington also very kindly donated signed copies of her books The Woman at 72 Drury Lane and Cold Feet – The Lost Years for the raffle along with two complimentary tickets for the Readers/Writers Day of the Festival in November. The very hard-working team of Anne Doyle and Liz Murphy Mitchell conducted the draw with the utmost efficiency and dexterity. Members of Strawberry Fair, Blackstairs Blues and Buddy were also out in strength and were thanked by Quiz Master Fintan Kelly before he brought the very successful evening to a close. – Maria Nolan

Buddy re-run surpasses expectation After seeing the inaugural production I wasn’t expecting to be blown away by the repeat performance of Buddy at The Presentation Centre, however I was very pleasantly surprised and once again I was completely captivated and up boppin’ with the best of them. This excellent eclectic mix of music, song, drama and comedy had the entire auditorium rockin’ in the aisles and rollin’ in their seats. A brilliant overall Production – the vocals, the instruments, the set, the dance routines, the casting and the acting were of a professional standard transporting the hypnotic audience right back to the day when Buddy Holly and the Crickets were the new kids on the block and all set to rock the world. This isn’t just a show – this is an experience – almost a time travel – as the Presentation audience metamorphosed into the Apollo audience of 1957 and rocked it out to That`ll Be The Day, Peggy Sue, Heartbeat, Rave On, Oh Boy and others. The calibre of the vocalists was second to none with an even better performance from
the main man Cado – Donagh Cadogan who quite simply is Buddy Holly, to the extent that when the announcement was made of his tragic death at the end of the show, there were gasps and sorrowful sighs in the audience. He is a mega performer, a superb singer who totally got and portrayed his character. His side-kicks the Crickets, Blayne Hosey, Alan Kinsella and Cameron Cloke gave sterling performances with the latter proving himself to be quite the comic as well as an most talented drummer. All of the previous cast like a good wine have just improved with time – the Big Bopper aka Dick Butler powerful and commanding on stage as always, and Richie Valens aka Jacob English erotically strutting his stuff to the delight of ladies of all ages in the auditorium. Karen Franklin’s portrayal of Maria Elena Santiago was extremely apt, her Latin American accent and attitude perfectly pitched at all times. In fact throughout the entire show the accents remained strong and true, the singing
harmonious and vigorous, the dancing energetic and impressive with all newcomers expertly filling the shoes of those who went before them making this a most entertaining and enjoyable experience for all present. Compliments and congratulations once again to Producer Adrienne Murphy, Director Michael Stafford and all who were involved with this wonderful show and with all proceeds going to that most deserving cause Pieta House I think we can safely say that this one is a winner all round. – Maria Nolan Pic: Maria Nolan

Rate Me. Drama. 17 Sept — 19 Sept. Some Strong Themes. Suitable for ages 14+ ‘Rate Me’ follows the lives of 4 young women growing up in a small town in 21st century Ireland. A new play, devised from a series of workshops with young Wexford women and performed by a cast of twenty girls aged 13-18yrs, written by Marnie McCleane-Fay. The #metoo movement and recent public allegations of sexual misconduct have sparked much discussion about power and the abuses of power. ‘Rate Me’ is a piece of theatre that reflects on patriarchal power and how it is ingrained in society; it’s about how young women navigate growing up in a world where you’re either ‘frigid’ or a ‘slut’; it’s about consent and human rights and human wrongs; it’s about the fun and heartache of growing up; it’s about being rated and judged on how you look; it’s about love and the loss of innocence. A funny, poignant, current and very important and timely play. Partially funded by an Arts Council Young Ensembles Award with the assistance of Wexford Arts Centre and Wexford County Council.

TURNING THE SOD ON ENNISCORTHY’S
NEW TECHNOLOGY PARK
The Sod Turning Ceremony for the new Enniscorthy Business & Technology Park took place on 3rd August, 2018, at the 14.45 hectares site in Kilagoley (beside the entrance to St. Senan’s Hospital). The objective of the development, which will cost close to €2 million, is to deliver a modern, industrial facility with a view to attracting small and medium-sized businesses from the science and technology sectors, the creation of hundreds of jobs and the betterment of the local economy.
Some view the project as the beginning of a new chapter in Enniscorthy’s long history. CEO of Wexford Co. Council Tom Enright said that it will be the shot in the arm that Enniscorthy needs and combined with the Flood Defence Scheme, the M11 bypass, The Templeshannon Regeneration Project and the major plans for a flagship Tourism Project in the town centre, it will help create a bright future for the town. The initial contract for the Business & Technology Park has been awarded to a local
company, Niall Barry & Co, and anyone who has passed the site in recent days will have seen heavy machinery at work there. Discussions are underway with several expanding local companies who have expressed an interest in moving to the new Park when complete. There is also the possibility of a UN Centre of Excellence for sustainable energy and nearly zero energy building locating there. It is hoped the first business will be operational in the Park by the end of 2019. n

Dramatic fall in the number of Monart Spa wins major award pubs in Co. Wexford There has been a 17% drop in the number of pubs in Ireland in the past 12 years. In Co. Wexford almost forty pubs disappeared during that time. There are nearly 1,500 fewer pubs in Ireland now than in 2005. That’s according to remarkable figures released by the Drinks Industry Group of Ireland.
Every county in Ireland has seen a drop in the number of pubs. In Co. Wexford the number has dropped by thirty-seven since 2005 or 12.5% so there are now 260 pub licences in the county compared to 297 back in 2005. The Drinks and Hospitality industry in Co. Wexford sup-
ports almost 7,000 workers or about 7% of the county’s workforce. This in line with other counties especially those who have a large number of visitors and tourists. Co. Wicklow saw the smallest drop in pub licences in that period down by just one from 158 to 157.

Included in the range is a selection of magnets, keyrings, photo slates, mugs and photo cards, featuring scenes of Enniscorthy Castle, Vinegar Hill, and many Co. Wexford landscapes. Judge Media was set up late last year by former journalist and now award-winning landscape photographer Jarlath Judge, who transforms his own images into souvenir and gift products aimed primarily at the tourism market. His items are currently stocked by a number of retailers including Steemers O’Leary’s and A r t B a n k i n B u n c l o d y, Enniscorthy Castle and the

1798 Centre in Enniscorthy, and several others in the region. “Many towns have fantastic tourism offerings and sometimes the opportunity to give visitors a momento to
take away is forgotten, this is where my products come in. They help in the further promotion of the area/attraction and keep it in people’s minds. I take the photographs and produce the souvenirs in fastturnaround small runs featuring several images if required”, Jarlath said. Judge Media also produces Block Mounted Photographs and Aluminium Wall Panels, as well as providing traditional photography services including corporate and product photography and a range of personalised photo gift items. Jarlath is happy to meet with prospective stockists and is happy to collaborate on photography-based projects. VET DIARY FOR SEPT
with the Moyne Veterinary Hospital Joe Kavanagh remembers with fondness a client who recently passed away. In my father's time in the practice he put great stead in those clients that had stuck with him through the good and the bad times. There was a comradery and understanding that grew over the years with these people and it's what makes the difference when things don't always go to plan. One of these loyal clients passed away in the last month, Catherine O'Connor. Herself and her sister Margaret farmed all their lives at their holding on the edge of the town in Crefogue. Catherine wasn't much over 5 feet tall but she made up for that in her outspoken views. You were never in doubt about what she was thinking because you would be told in no uncertain terms. In a world that has become so PC it's almost bland, Catherine never dipped below colourful. She had her own forthright views on most things and wasn't swayed by public opinion, or authority for that matter!!! As the odd young Garda found out to his detriment if she was stopped. Doing a call to their farm was always entertaining and you always felt it is a bit of the old world happening in front of you. They had great stead in their stock, grafted hard, and everything happened in its own good time. One of the last calls I did there was to a cow calving about 3.00am in the morning and you were invited in for the tea and a bit to eat... Regardless of the time. It's characters like Catherine and Margaret that make a Country Practice more colourful. As these smaller farms are being swallowed up by the bigger units, something unique and human is being lost.... these individuals that made the difference.

An Post… gone to the dogs! With effect from 17th July, An Post has taken over responsibility for the issuing and renewal of dog licences from local authorities and commences the process of developing a new National Dog Licence database. This new Database will spell the end for the old ”manual” dog licence, modernising the dog licensing system to provide more timely information and helping to boost dog licence income. Dog Licences can be purchased online at www.licences.ie or in person at any Post Office. Customers having difficulty purchasing Dog Licences online can email
support@licences.ie or phone 1890 200090. The Annual Dog Licence fee remains at €20 while a Lifetime Dog Licence costs €140. Owners of multiple numbers of dogs can continue to purchase a General Dog Licence from Wexford County Council at a cost of €400. Local authorities retain their responsibilities for control of dogs and enforcement of dog licencing under the Control of Dogs Act. Wexford County Council reminds all dog owners that they must: ● Keep their dog under control when in public (best on a lead).
Have a current Licence for their dog. ● Microchip and register their dog. ● Muzzle certain breeds and keep them on a strong chain when in public (e.g. Alsatian, German Shepherd, Akita, Bull Te r r i e r s , D o b e r m a n , Rottweiler etc.) ● Clean up after their dog if it fouls in a public place. Wexford County Council’s Wardens will be carrying out additional licence check patrols over the coming weeks and months. The maximum fine for failure to licence your dog is €2,500. n ●

A local contributor looks at life today in Enniscorthy and beyond the VuLture Funds View from the Hill has written before about these insidious vulture funds who are destroying the very fabric of thousands of people’s lives in this country. Encouraged to come in here by the previous Fine Gael/Labour Government (remember Michael Noonan having a great crack at people’s misery, “Vultures do a great service”, cracked comical Noonan, “they clean up a lot of rotten carrion left behind by others”) and given generous tax breaks, these funds are now rampaging through the country at an alarming pace. Michael D’Arcy, Wexford T.D. and Junior Finance Minister, sees no problem with the vultures. Michael says that they are easy to deal with. Don’t know what planet he’s on but he certainly hasn’t been at the receiving end of these parasites. Over the next few weeks many people in the Enniscorthy area who had mortgages with PTSB, KBC and Ulster Bank will be receiving letters to the effect that their mortgage has been transferred to another entity. Whatever fancy name this company has you can be sure that it is a vulture fund. These funds work on the basis that they purchase your mortgage from your bank at about a
tenth of its value. The difference in the value of your mortgage is paid to your bank by the taxpayer. The vulture fund then demands the full mortgage repayment from you immediately and if you cannot come up with the money, which of course you can’t because if you could why would you have a mortgage in the first place, and when you can’t diffy up they will take legal proceedings against you. Our courts have been very obliging to the vulture funds invariably ruling in their favour and granting possession to the funds. All part of the system you see. Then you and your family are in deep trouble. The home that you have worked hard to create is on the brink and you don’t know where to turn. The other aspect of this scandalous sell-off of mortgages is that while the banks will practically give your mortgage to the vulture fund for nothing, the same bank will not even give the householder a small discount on the mortgage which in many cases would make the payments affordable. The one place where you should be able to get help is from our legislators. Those people we elect to Dail Eireann to represent us. However, our Wexford deputies have been remarkably quiet on this one. Brendan Howlin
Pic: ©Joseph Doyle
View from the Hill can’t open his mouth as he was Minister for Public Reform and Expenditure and Noonan’s sidekick when the vultures were invited in, and as photographs in the public domain show, enjoyed many a joke and laugh with Noonan while imposing cruel austerity on the people of Ireland and Wexford. Paul Kehoe was equally a minister in the “invite vultures” government and obviously went along with the policy. In fairness to D’Arcy he was only a backbench TD at the time but his remarks since verify that he was in favour of the policy. James Browne has said nothing that I can find on the issue and
his party’s attitude to the vultures is very constrained to say the least. With the honourable exception of John McGuinness in Kilkenny who is currently demanding the immediate recall of the Dail to deal with this issue, the rest of that party apparently are not too upset at what the vultures are doing. Mick Wallace, in fairness, has criticised the vultures and made his feelings known on the matter. A further issue in regard to the vultures is their tax arrangement. If a small or private landlord rents out a property they must pay 42% tax on the rental income. The vultures pay no tax whatever on rental income.
The time has come for the Irish people to stand up and fight this nightmare. Tell your TDs that there is no vote here unless these vultures are stopped and that legislation is passed to immediately protect those who are in the line of fire from the vultures. There is little point in whinging about this and then come the next election returning the same faces again. Make it clear: No Vote unless vultures are thrown out. Furthermore, people with money should refuse to buy from vultures. Years ago if a family was thrown out of their home no person whatever would even attempt to purchase that property. The old saying was, “ They won’t have a day’s luck in it.” The same principal should apply today. Boycott the vultures and boycott anyone or any company which supports them by purchasing their ill-gotten gains. The time to fight back has arrived. All it needs is a leader or leaders. Lobbying Act The above act was introduced to prevent undercover lobbying of public officials by individuals or companies or other groups. Any person who lobbies a public representative or government department is bound under law to register that lobbying on the public register. No problem so far.
Another aspect of the Lobbying Act was that all officials of government departments or ministerial advisers who retired or left that employment would have to wait 12 months, as a cooling-off period, before they could take up employment with any firm who might be lobbying government on the issues of the day. In my opinion this should have been five years to ensure that their inside track was well and truly removed. However, and there is always a however, when dealing with matters like this, a clause was inserted to allow the retired official or adviser to apply for a derogation from this clause if he or she could verify that they would not directly contact any of their former colleagues on any issue for the twelve month period. Now that requires great principle and honesty from all concerned. As a matter of interest during 2017 six former officials and advisers applied for such derogations. Five of them were granted with the cooling-off period in two of the cases being as little as two months and in others approximately four months. That system seems to be working well, for some people. n We are often asked: Who is the “View from the Hill” columnist? All we can say is that the author’s surname is NOT Doyle!

POST OFFICES… deputy James browne has expressed serious concern at the revelation by An Post that Wexford is to be one of the worst hit counties in terms of upcoming post office closures. An Post has confirmed that 11 Wexford post offices will soon shut their doors. They are in Ballycogley, Ballywilliam, Bannow, Broadway, Camolin, Coolgreany, Duncannon, Foulksmills, Glynn, Kilmore Quay and Kiltealy. “The lack of a post office undermines a village’s viability. It is the withdrawal of the State from supporting rural life. There is a domino effect on the local economy caused by the removal of State services from villages and rural towns”, Deputy Browne remarked. “Rural post offices don't just provide irreplaceable services; they are a cornerstone of the local community, providing invaluable social connectivity that will be permanently lost with their closure”, Deputy Browne commented. “This Government’s silence on the issue speaks volumes. Rural Ireland has suffered under the current Government. Without broadband, rural communities cannot help themselves. Garda stations have closed. Local shops are strug-
gling to survive. Government inaction makes it more and more difficult for small villages to make their community a better place for all”, concluded Deputy Browne. sinn Féin general election candidate, cllr. Johnny Mythen, has described An Post’s plans to close 159 post office branches across rural ireland as an absolute scandal that must be resisted. Cllr. Mythen said that the announcement… is the latest outworking of decades of attacks on Ireland's rural post office network overseen by Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael governments. “The vital community role of the post office network has been ruthlessly undermined by successive Irish Governments as well as the EU.” “This week’s announcement makes it clear that Fine Gael is not up to the task of delivering… necessary rethink. Neither are Fianna Fáil who, despite their faux outrage this week, actually oversaw the closure of 288 rural post offices between 2005 and 2010. “The proposed post office closures announced this week must be resisted… Rural Ireland cannot take much more. It is time for us to shout ‘Stop!’, Cllr Mythen concluded. n

caroline gets motoring review by Caroline Kidd
Mitsubishi EclipsE cross Mitsubishi has a lot of respect in the irish market for building tough off-roaders and suVs like the Pajero and outlander. With ever-growing demand for stylish suVs that are more at home on the school run than on the farm, the brand has responded with the new Mitsubishi eclipse cross midsize suV. Pricing starts from €27,900 in ireland, placing the eclipse cross firmly among the hyundai tucson and nissan Qashqai set. There is no doubt that the Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross is an exciting new model for the brand, with Mitsubishi citing it as the first of a new generation of cars for them that are ‘more
capable and desirable’. Certainly in the metal the Eclipse Cross has a lot of presence and Mitsubishi is pitching it as an SUV coupé. The styling is shown off to particular good effect in Diamond Red Metallic, a special new red paint developed for the Eclipse Cross and applied using a new chromatic painting process. The ride height might be high like an SUV but inside Mitsubishi has managed to package something of a sporty, coupé-like feel. The centre tunnel is quite high for an SUV and the steering wheel sits more low so there is a pleasant, snug feel to the cabin. Mitsubishi describes the interior as ‘cock-

pit style’ and the quality of the interior is a step up for Mitsubishi with some nice soft touch materials and stylish piano black and silver trim. There is a 7-inch touchscreen display on the dashboard combined with a new touchpad controller that pairs seamlessly to smartphones with Apple Car Play and Android Auto. The Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross might be a looker but it retains the sort of practicality that should please family buyers. The rear legroom is excellent and even in width the Eclipse Cross seems generously proportioned for this class of vehicle. The rear seats can also slide and recline. The boot opens to reveal
411 litres with the five seats in their normal position so that's a bit on the small side compared to some rivals. There are three trim levels f o r I re l a n d : I n v i t e ( f ro m €27,900), Intense (from €29,900) and Instyle (from €34,900). The entry model is well-equipped including 16" alloy wheels, reversing camera, touchscreen, automatic air conditioning, four electric windows, cruise control, forward collision mitigation, lane departure warning, auto high beam and front fog lamps. At launch, the Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross is powered by an all-new 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine developing 163hp and 250Nm of torque, though a diesel is on the way in 2019. A six-speed manual comes as standard but a CVT automatic is also available. The current range is front wheel drive only but Mitsubishi Ireland says that four wheel drive will be available. On the road the Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross gets perky performance from its 1.5-litre petrol engine. With 163hp it's got a lot more power than what some of the more mainstream rivals are offering in their petrol ranges, but the running costs are a bit steeper too: motor tax is €390 per year and my fuel consumption was 7l/100km over a week of driving. But this engine makes easy and sometimes entertaining progress in the Eclipse Cross. Refinement is good with extensive sound insulation within the body panels as well as the use of soundproof glazing and a floor silencer material. Mitsubishi has tuned the suspension and steering for a more engaging drive and the results are a mixed bag. It's fine by class standards with direct steering and reasonable composure through bends, but there's not enough feedback in the steering or willingness to

hunker down in corners to fully deliver on the promise of a sporty SUV. While the car is generally comfortable on the smooth stuff, the ride can be bumpy in town. The distinctive SUV coupé style of the Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross and its sporty stance will certainly draw attention to this one, while Mitsubishi has managed to capture some uniqueness in the interior too. Families will love the spacious interior, while the engine is a powerful match for the car. Equipment l e v e l s a re h i g h t o o w i t h Mitsubishi’s eight year warranty for extra peace of mind. Not delivering fully on the sporty driving dynamics seems like a missed opportunity as the Eclipse Cross is a genuinely well-executed idea of an SUVcoupé among more vanilla competitors. Regardless, the Eclipse Cross is a great addition to Mitsubishi's portfolio and the bold, stylish design is a mark of great things to come from the Japanese brand. It was a fun evening with lots of good racing, a plethora of mini games organised by B o b b y G o ff , M a rg u e r i t e Furlong, Angela McCormack and their Coiste na nOg team, lots of raffle prizes and plenty of photos and autographs with some of our Senior County Hurlers including Matthew O’ Hanlon, Liam Ryan, Paul Morris, Kevin Foley, Mark Fanning and Shaun Murphy. Our sincere thanks to the lads for being available and accessible making it a special

Hillbrook Lawn Tennis Club Enniscorthy Junior Tennis classes start back on Saturday afternoons starting Saturday 15th September with Tennis Ireland Coach Ashley Wynne. For more information and to register follow the link: https://goo.gl/forms/eXTj9Ckaq59REGT23 n
the schools soccer coaching scheme recently hosted a camp in the gaelscoil, drumgoold, for four days for children aged 5 years to 13 years. A range of various sporting activities were played from hurling, soccer, to rounders and dodge ball. The group departed for Secret Valley Wildlife Park on one of the days and arrived in time to meet the new monkeys brought in from Holland that morning which was great for the children to see.
The Schools Soccer Coaching Scheme sincerely appreciates the support of Wexford County Council as without their assistance the camp would not be subsidised. Thanks to Judy Heffernan and the board of management for giving the group the use of the facilities in Gaelscoil. Thanks also to the coaches and the voluntary helpers. The next camp will be at Halloween and will, once again, be organised by Cllr John O'Rourke. n

Countess Markievicz - A Woman of Substance Anne haverty, novelist and biographer, gave an interesting and informative talk to the large audience at the Athenaeum, enniscorthy, on 30th August, on that great lady of irish politics – countess Markievicz. A library event, introduced by Librarian Jarlath Glynn, who said that there was no more fitting place for a lecture on Countess Markievicz to be held than the Athenaeum with its 1916 background. Anne Haverty became emotional when she spoke of her late husband Poet Anthony Cronin’s memories of the Athenaeum, both the pool hall and the dance hall, and said that she imagined Anthony having some good times at dances there. In her lecture Anne spoke warmly of the animated Countess, born Constance Gore Booth to Anglo Irish, Church of Ireland gentry at Lissadell, Co. Sligo, in 1868. Taught to ride

An Unfolding Portrait – exhibition by Helen McLean i was delighted to be at the opening of An unfolding Portrait – an exhibition of the beautiful work of helen McLean, on 28th July, at the Presentation centre, enniscorthy. Helen is a beautiful and charming woman now living and working in Co. Wexford and we are extremely fortunate to have her on our doorstep where we can witness and appreciate her magnificent talent as she moves effortlessly between painting, mosaic and glass to create descriptive dreamlike imagery. Speaking to the Presentation audience she said that she loves colour and energy and that is evident in all her pieces, they are vibrant, colourful and exquisite. ‘I use a lot of gold in my work because it is the closest you can get to sunlight and I love all
things bright and bathed in light’, she continued. Helen was delighted to introduce Tweeting Goddess Samantha Kelly to formally open her Exhibition. Bubbly, social media guru Sam Kelly became emotional
telling how she became a student of Helen`s when she was trying to find herself and her niche following treatment for addiction and has never looked back. She is a huge fan of Helen`s work, her favourite piece in
the current Exhibition is the work titled The Forest of Memories and she encouraged everyone to get the word out there telling everyone about the Exhibition. Curator Lisa Byrne thanked
Artist Helen Mclean with tweeting Goddess Samantha Kelly who launched the Exhibition. Pic: Maria Nolan.
everyone for turning out and said that The Presentation Centre was thrilled to be hosting the wonderful Exhibition which would run until 7th September. Helen’s work is so varied and can be seen anywhere from
churches to ornate gardens in Ireland, England, Scotland, the USA and of course Wexford. Well done once again to the Presentation for bringing her talent to us. – maria nolan
