This Comment column is usually to be found singing the praises of Enniscorthy so for a change I’d like to pay tribute to Bunclody – our neighbouring town in the Enniscorthy Municipal District. Hard to believe that just four short years ago in a national survey Bunclody was named as the most economically depressed town in the whole country. Now it has just been named as the national winner in the small towns category of the National Pride of Place Awards. Pride of Place is an allisland competition that acknowledges the work that communities are doing all over the island of Ireland. The competition focus is about people coming together to shape, change and improve daily lives in their communities. After an impressive visit to the town earlier this year, the judges said they would “continue to watch Two of the main people behind the development of this town on Bunclody’s recent successes, its journey as a great place to Jon King and Una Murphy, with the live, work and visit.” Bunclody Pride of Place award. For Bunclody to win such a prestigious national award requires a lot of people to do a lot of good work. I recently caught up with two of those hard workers – Jon King and Una Murphy, fellow committee members of mine on the Enniscorthy & District Tourism Committee. What a marvellos duo, and artistically talented to boot! Congrats to both and all involved in this wonderful success story. – Frank Corcoran

Grants Pharmacy – at the cutting edge! From cutting the red ribbon to cutting the cake it was all about the cutting edge at the official opening of Grants Pharmacy on Rafter Street on Monday 19th November. This wonderful new addition to the Rafter streetscape can only enhance and improve footfall at the centre of Enniscorthy town and be good for all the business premises in its vicinity. Fresh, crisp and spacious with the modern twist of a kids’ play area and a laid back salon-style waiting area complete with tea/coffee machine, Grants owner, the lovely Leonie Grant, was at pains to point out that the focus of the new venture is based on good old-fashioned, friendly, customer service and over 40 years experience in business in the South East. Leonie welcomed the large gathering of well-wishers and business neighbours on ‘the street’ saying that her husband Martin, pharmacist Glenn Nolan and Susan Sunderland were hugely instrumental in getting everything off the ground for this latest project – Leonie’s fifth pharmacy – ‘Well I have 5 children and I have 5 pharmacies – so I’m finished now,’ Leonie said. ‘But the person really responsible for all of this is my mother Mrs. Bernie Grant who took over when my dad fell ill, and ran the original family pharmacy along with looking after five children on her own. If it wasn’t for my mother’, Leonie continued, ‘I wouldn’t be here today opening my fifth pharmacy.’ Leonie then called on her mother Bernie to cut the red ribbon and declare Grants of Rafter Street officially open. Rafter Street is most definitely rising. – Maria Nolan

TECH TIP

BY DAVID POHLUDEK FERNS COMPUTER SERVICES

28 November 2018

www.slaneynews.com

FAKE FORTNITE FOR ANDROID FERNS COMPUTER SERVICES The extremely popular video game Fortnite is coming to Android sometime this winter, and the fanbase is going wild. Already, there are several videos on YouTube with links claiming to be versions of Fortnite for Android, despite the fact the game has yet to be released on this platform. The apps are not located on the Google Play Store. Instead, people have found them by searching “How to install Fortnite on Android”. From there, the apps can be downloaded. To make the app look legit, it starts with a realistic-looking icon. As a matter of fact, it’s so realistic that some may recognise it from the Apple iOS version. After the loading screen, it starts playing the Fortnite intro song and opens a screen that displays “New Updates,” the first indication something might be up. By just clicking on the screen, it moves onto a different screen that makes more sense. It states that it’s “Logging In…” and looks very authentic (as well as very stolen). Click “OK” and the app redirects to a website via your default browser. There, it claims to be for the purpose of verifying “You’r Not A BOT” (bad grammar and all) in order to proceed to Fortnite. To “verify,” the user must complete a task, which involves downloading another “free” app. The scheme goes like this: Get a couple of over-excited people salivating for a chance to play Fortnite on Android, and get paid. The more downloads that come from the website shown above, the more money the malware developers can make. Every time there is a craze around a new video game release, we see malware authors jumping into the game. Often, it’s an attack against our good senses. Our advice: be patient and wait for the official game release! Ferns Computer Services has been in business in Ferns since May 2007. Established by David Pohludek, it has a huge clientele base all over Co. Wexford and beyond.

ENNISCORTHY CREDIT UNION Brenda O’Neill Memorial Scholarship Draw

Cllr Johnny Mythen Minister Paul Kehoe TD

TACKLING THE INSURANCE COMPANIES Sinn Féin general election candidate, Cllr Johnny Mythen, has told the Minister with responsibility for insurance, Michael D'Arcy, that many people who have been hammered by high insurance premiums in recent years will find it hard to stomach that insurance companies have refused to inform policy holders when a claim has been made against them. Cllr. Mythen said: "My party has been questioning Minister of State Michael D’Arcy on the progress made by the Oireachtas Finance Committee over the last two years into the report on rising insurance costs that was agreed by the Committee. The report made over 72 recommendations. "In terms of implementing these recommendations, the insurance industry has dragged its feet, been too slow in acting or has flatly refused to cooperate at all. "Minister D’Arcy also said that the issue of returning emigrants facing difficulties obtaining policies is no longer a problem. I am still hearing many stories from people who have returned to Ireland and are experiencing delays and are faced with sky high premiums. "There needs to be more action from Government to face down the insurance industry. They are fleecing young people – particularly motor insurers. They are doing the bare minimum and are looking to do less and less. If legislation is needed, it should be introduced and done without delay."

SENIORS ALERTS SCHEME – 360% UPTAKE INCREASE

Enniscorthy Credit Union had a wonderful evening in honour of their colleague Brenda O’Neill at the Riverside Park Hotel on 13th November for the Annual Scholarship Draw. €9,000 was presented to ten lucky student members or their representatives. Back row L-R: John McWey (representing John McWey, scholarship winner), Margaret Kent (representing Eoin Murphy, scholarship winner), Nick Cosgrave (Chairman, Enniscorthy Credit Union), Woody Bennett (scholarship winner), Helen Roban (representing Jamie Roban, scholarship winner), Marian Kavanagh (representing Nicole Kavanagh, scholarship winner), Martina Foley (representing Jack Foley, scholarship winner). Front L-R: Lynda Kinsella (representing Michael Kinsella, scholarship winner), Aine Doyle (Enniscorthy Credit Union), Liam Waters (Acting Manager of Enniscorthy Credit Union), Dympna Hearne (representing Conor Hearne, scholarship winner), Hannah Bolger (scholarship winner), Stella Grannell (representing Fergal Grannell, scholarship winner).

Nick Cosgrave, Chairman Enniscorthy Credit Union, addressing the large attendance at the Brenda O’Neill Memorial Scholarship Draw held in the Riverside Park Hotel, 13th November, 2018.

The Senior Alerts Scheme supports vulnerable older people in our communities through the provision of free personal monitored alarms which are provided by the Department of Community Affairs. This community-led scheme enables people over 65 to live securely in their homes with confidence, independence and peace of mind. In Wexford, according to Minister Paul Kehoe TD, the figures show that as of 31 October 2017, 336 participants were approved for the scheme. As of 22 October 2018, there were 1,239 approved for the scheme. This represents an increase of around 360% and far above the national average. All participants on the Seniors Alert Scheme have a base unit installed in their home which is connected to a national helpline. Alarm devices, which are monitored 24 hours, can be worn as a pendant or around the wrist like a watch, ensuring assistance is always available. When the user activates the personalised alarm it puts a call through to the national call centre which is open 24/7/365. The call centre operator talks to the person in their home and decides whether to alert a locally based volunteer responder or, in potentially serious circumstances, the emergency services.

MORGAN DUNNE Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam The first time i saw Morgan dunne in action was many years ago in a hurling match in bellefield. i didn’t know him at the time and i cannot remember what team he was playing with but i recall vividly a slim young man racing down one side of the pitch towards the goal on a solo run and his blonde tresses streaming behind him. he avoided some tackles with an adept sidestep and it struck me that he wasn’t into the physicality of the game; but of course he was so fast on his feet he could avoid the more robust tackles. I later I got to know him when both of us were members of the staff of St. Senan’s Hospital. During the fifties and sixties many bright young people had joined the staff of the hospital including many wellknown hurlers and footballers. It was also a hotbed of many diverse political opinions. Some of us became involved with republicanism and joined a resurgent Sinn Féin. Morgan Dunne was the Sinn Féin candidate in the Wexford constituency in the 1961 General Election and received 1,304 votes. I travelled to many a church gate with him throughout the county during the campaign. He always brought the soapbox with him and the minute Mass was over Morgan was in action; he was an excellent public speaker, eloquent and fiery, bordering on being a demagogue. I remember one public meeting, from memory; I think it was in Blackwater. Morgan was on his soapbox waxing eloquent about all the executions carried out by the Free State

Government during the Civil War. I noticed about half of the listeners were walking away. He then came up to the Second World War years and attacked the then Government over executing members of the I.R.A. I now became aware that the remainder of his listeners had drifted away and Morgan and I were left all alone. Apparently, the Fine Gael supporters got annoyed with him first and later the Fianna Fáil adherents deserted us. I said to Morgan on the way home that he wasn’t going a good way to garner votes and I must admit that afterwards he changed tack. Later on he became disillusioned with the abstentionist policy of Sinn Féin and joined the Labour Party. Morgan took a great interest in his nursing career and was a man before his time with innovative ideas. He got himself seconded for special training in caring for the intellectually challenged. I believe it was in Celbridge, Co. Kildare that he received the special instruction and when he returned to St. Senan’s he proceeded to set up a Special Therapy Unit; it was really an Industrial Therapy Unit and provided certain services for outside businesses which worked very successfully. I was given the task of archiving the orders and keeping an eye on invoices and accounts. Clients that were previously sitting around different wards with nothing much to do were suddenly occupied and it was remarkable how they applied themselves to the different tasks. Yes, Morgan was a conscientious employee with progressive ideas.

For years Morgan was Chairman of St. Senan’s Hospital Branch of the Irish Transport and General Workers’ Union which in 1990 merged with the Workers’ Union to become S.I.P.T.U. I was Branch Secretary and we then used to negotiate on behalf of the staff with Mr. T.F. Broe, Wexford County Manager, because the County Council had responsibility for Health until 1970 when Health Boards were set up. Both of us were present at the Official Opening of Liberty Hall in 1965. Morgan was a Member of Enniscorthy Urban District Council for many years and was its Chairman on two occasions, 1975 and 1976. He was the Council’s representative on the County Wexford Vocational Education Committee. He remained the Council’s representative on the V.E.C. over the years in spite of the changing political make-up of the Council after each Local Election. He was an excellent Chairman and could control a meeting with considerable authority aided with a sound sense of local government protocol and procedures. It could be said that he was a shrewd political operator. I do believe that the County V.E.C. was his favourite body as it became his speciality and his contribution to its success in educating our young people was enormous. He treated his membership of the V.E.C. very seriously and Enniscorthy Urban Council could not have a more worthy delegate representing them on such a democratic educational body. He was a member of the V.E.C. from 1967 until its demise in 2013. He was honoured with a Long Service Presentation the

day that Micheál Martin officially opened Kilmuckridge Vocational College. He was very much occupied with educational initiatives in the vocational sector such as V.T.O.S., Youth Reach and Back to Education. Morgan was very involved in the provision of new schools such as the Vocational College on the Milehouse Road in Enniscorthy and the Vocational College in Kilmuckridge and actively supported the purchase of sports facilities in Enniscorthy, Adamstown, Kilmuckridge and Bridgetown. He was an enthusiastic member of the Boards of Management of both Enniscorthy and Bunclody Colleges and acted as Chairman of both on a number of occasions. Very few people in the county would have made a greater contribution to vocational education than Morgan Dunne. For many years during Morgan’s membership of the V.E.C. his cousin, James J. Dunne, was its Chief Executive Officer, who was equally innovative.

In 1968 Enniscorthy Golf Club denied membership to two Enniscorthy men which resulted in a great furore throughout the town. National television, radio, Irish and foreign newspapers got involved in the story. Eventually a public meeting was convened for the Market Square which was addressed by Morgan Dunne agus mé féin. A very large attendance turned up as I believe they were expecting names to be named of the golf club members who voted against membership being granted to the two men involved. Names weren’t named as we hadn’t a clue who had voted for and against. Even if we did know we wouldn’t have named names anyway. Lee Trevino had won the American Open Golf Title the same year and it was stated at the meeting if he had been born in Enniscorthy he wouldn’t be eligible to become a member of the Golf Club due to his very humble beginnings. How relationships have changed; Enniscorthy Golf Club is a much more egalitarian institution nowadays. Its policy regarding membership is far more enlightened and the Club is a great asset to the whole area. Morgan Dunne became a very valued member of the Club and eventually became its President. His considerable contribution was recognised when a large number of the Club Membership formed a Guard of Honour and accompanied his funeral cortege. Morgan’s sudden passing came about on 23 October 2018 as he was on his way home from the Golf Club after his usual morning coffee and tête-à-têtes. He was in his 91st year.

I have many stories and incidents involving Morgan that I could relate but this is not the proper medium for such rare disclosures. He was a proud Courtnacuddy man with a wry sense of humour. He could keep a very straight face when he was attempting to provoke someone to get annoyed about something trivial. He wasn’t really the hail-fellow-well-met style of person and he didn’t possess an ingratiating manner. Back slapping extravagant geniality was not one of his strong points. He could be excellent company and had a wide knowledge of current affairs. He was quite amiable without the histrionics. I enjoyed his company within many different settings. Morgan was a loyal family man and he and his wife Molly, had eleven of a family. Molly predeceased him, along with two of their children, Eileen and Seán, which must have caused much emotional distress. His contribution to the wider community over the years with his involvement with public affairs particularly in the field of vocational education was immense and only recently I was speaking to people who were involved with him in the education field and they had nothing but the height of praise for him. Anything he set his mind to absorbed his whole attention and his interest wasn’t easily diverted; he generally pressed on regardless of any impediments that might hinder progress. Many were not aware of his achievements as he wasn’t one to blow his own trumpet. – Seán Doyle

Wexford’s Civil Defence service Fionnuala’s Feathers gets wings is lauded by Minister Kehoe

Minister Paul Kehoe recently addressed Civil Defence Officers and volunteers in Enniscorthy. The meeting was called as part of a roll-out of eight regional volunteer consultation meetings across the country. Minister Kehoe said, “Under the leadership of Peter O’Connor, Civil Defence Volunteers have served our communities in Wexford without a second thought. I want to thank Peter and all the Civil Defence volunteers for their dedication and commitment.”

It was both an honour and a pleasure to launch Fionnuala’s Feathers by Mary Cotter at The presentation Centre on friday 16th November. What a lovely title and what a great anthology of charming, warm, affectionate tales, many reminiscent of a world now vanishing but still very fondly remembered. Mary Cotter is gradually emerging as a beautiful literary butterfly from her cocoon or like Fionnuala, the daughter of Lir, she is shedding her feathers and with each publication growing in confidence and contentment. Mary has finally found her voice and what an eloquent one it is. Mary was part of our New Voices section at this year`s Wexford Literary Festival and her readings were very well received by our literary audience. She says, ‘The air in Wexford is full of words and I harvest them.’ Well that may be true, Wexford is indeed full of words and writers but Mary’s words are Tipperary words, they are tinged with the soft blue and

Mary Cotter (left) at her book launch with Maria Nolan.

yellow hue of the Knockmealdown Mountains and are as rich and abundant as the lush Golden Vale. They are the words of her childhood, cloaked in nostalgia with flavours of the Tipp vernacular and shades of mythology. Her writing captures the colours, the scents, the sounds and the sensations of times past as she describes places and people with love, tolerance and an inherent understanding of all their little quirks and idiosyncrasies. Her colourful characters and bitter-sweet tales are a

delightful trace of our Irishness and are part of the social history of a time fast disappearing from the Irish scene. Mary’s use of language is poetic and graceful with evocative lines like this from that beautiful tale titled Lone Wolf, ‘The silence sits between them like a rug covering their knees’ – how lovely is that. Mary Cotter has the touch of a Seanachai – she is a weaver of tales. Her words and stories come from her soul and inner sanctum and ripple with echoes of a time and an Irish essence that catches my heart and takes me on a meander down Memory Lane. This is a jewel of a book, it is a charming, well written, enchanting collection of life tales told with humour, wit, affection and an amused patience with, and perception of, a people and a time. Some of these stories will leave you with a warm glow and some will haunt you long after you finish them. But you need to buy the book to find out which is which! – Maria Nolan

Worries expressed at health meeting fianna fáil Councillor and General Election Candidate, lisa Mcdonald, has said that that there is palpable worry and anxiety among local people about the ability of the health service to meet the needs of citizens. Cllr. McDonald was commenting after hosting a wellattended public meeting in Wexford Town on the future of the Irish health service that was addressed by Susan Mitchell, the Health Editor of the Sunday Business Post, Dr. Maitiú Ó Tuathail, President of the National Association of

General Practitioners, and Stephen McMahon of the Irish Patients Association. “Outrage is growing among people in our communities about the state of the health service. They see yearly increases in budget spending on health yet waiting lists are growing not getting shorter. Our emergency departments have never been as overcrowded,” said Cllr McDonald. “Susan’s comment that the national media give more attention to comments made by the former HSE Director General about the Health Minister than

the serious and chronic challenges the system faces is proof that the focus has been taken off the patients. “Stephen highlighted patient safety as being a major concern. Only recently there were court cases where it was reported that many people employed as doctors do not have the required experience or qualifications. “I have been contacted on numerous occasions by patients who have been told that their hospital appointment is three, four or five years into the future. How is this acceptable? Dr Ó

In Ferrycarrig Hotel on Tuesday 13th November at a public meeting organised by Cllr Lisa McDonald on Hospital Waiting Lists were Mr Paul Kelly (Consultant, Wexford General Hospital), Susan Mitchell (Health Editor, The Sunday Business Post), Cllr Lisa McDonald, Maitiú Tuathail (National Association of GPs), Stephen McMahon (Director of The Irish Patients Association) and Ian Kehoe (The Sunday Business Post).

Marie hooks prize

Ballymurn-based photographer, Marie Hayes, “hooked” another award to add to her growing list at the Hook Peninsula Photographic Competition awards night recently. Marie won the People’s Choice category.

Tuathail, I believe, outlined the frustration our GPs are experiencing when referring patients to hospitals for appointments and treatments. “Quite rightly, my party, as part of its review of the Confidence and Supply arrangement, has sought to review access to health services in detail to see what is being achieved, and what needs reform... We already spend 170% of the OECD average health spend yet the service being delivered to our citizens just isn’t up to scratch. “Many of the contributions from the floor would break your heart. Parents talking about terrible waiting times for their children to get basic treatments and children fearful about ever having to bring their elderly parent to the Emergency Department for fear that they would be left lying on a trolley. “The many suggestions that were provided by our speakers and from the floor will be sent onto our Health Spokesperson, Stephen Donnelly TD, and fed into Fianna Fáil’s next manifesto. It’s essential that we get it right,” concluded McDonald. n

PROTEST BY EX-AIR CORPS SERVICEMEN Cllr Johnny Mythen joined ex-Air Corps servicemen on their protest outside the Enniscorthy office of Minister Paul Kehoe TD in early November, saying: "These men were working in extremely hazardous conditions for years. They have lost 63 colleagues mostly through cancer-related ailments. They had not been supplied with any protective clothing or safety gear despite handling toxic chemicals on a daily basis.” The men say they are protesting to have their case recognised and processed by Minister Kehoe and the Dept. of Defence. n

Reflections on Redmondism, Remembrance and The Poppy Last month Wexford rightly remembered the 874 men from this county who were killed in the mass abattoir that was World War 1. It is worth reflecting on the controversial symbolism associated with this imperial war, which became ever more mainstream on the streets of Co. Wexford this year with the British Legion’s annual “Poppy Appeal.” World War 1 represented the mass slaughter of tens of thousands of Irishmen who followed the pied piper call of Wexford’s own John Redmond to be used as cannon fodder in the battlefields of the Somme and elsewhere. They went for many and varied reasons - some out of a sense of adventure, more from hearing Redmond’s call, mistakenly believing they were fighting for "the freedom of small nations" (rather than a power struggle between the imperialist nations and their desire to carve up the Ottoman Empire and defend their colonial operations in Africa.) Others went out of loyalty to empire, while others, like many young men from up the Shannon in Enniscorthy, to escape the grinding poverty of the day. However, as we rightly remember these men – our relatives and family members, let us not be confused with the real meaning of the main symbol used for such remembrance – the Royal British Legion’s Poppy. The purpose of the Poppy Appeal is: “to honour all who died in British army uniform fighting in all of Britain’s wars, past and present” as well as “to support all British Military Service Personnel who served in all conflicts since 1945”. This point has been stressed often enough by British politicians and commentators. So here in Ireland we need to dispel the nonsensical notion that it’s nothing more than a nice flower sold to help old men. That’s simply incorrect. Few if any soldiers who served in World war 1 are still with us. So recently, the British Legion dedicated its annual Poppy Appeal to the soldiers fighting in Afghanistan; another year it was for “Our boys in Basra (Iraq)” – both modern-day examples of the mass slaughter of the innocents, against nations and peoples who had no quarrel with Britain. The point we need to remember is that this highly political British military symbol (whether The British Legion cleverly sticks it on top of a shamrock or not, in order to make it more palatable to the Irish) encapsulates one view of history and the world – a view that those of us in the republican tradition (or indeed those

Cllr Fionntán Ó Súilleabháin in the pacifist, anti-war tradition-hence Jeremy Corbyn’s White Poppy) don’t subscribe to, for it encapsulates all the injustices that are associated with the British uniform both at home and abroad, past and present. (Britain is involved in mass slaughter of civilians in several countries at present, including the genocide in Yemen). The “Great War of 1914-18” was anything but great or glorious. Britain’s wars ever since 1918 were imperialist – not defensive, with the rather inglorious roll call listing not just Ireland but imperial savagery against the peoples of Bengal, Malaya, Aden (now Yemen), Kenya, Cyprus, Afghanistan, Iraq etc. to name but a few. This year, once again, we saw the perennial death-threats and bullying directed at Derry footballer James McClean for his refusal to bring politics into sport – refusing to wear the poppy out of respect for his neighbours killed on Bloody Sunday in Derry. (Similarly, TV presenters, even those working for BBC Northern Ireland, will face dire consequences careerwise if they don't fall into line with this new unofficial policy). This “Poppy Fascism” which will only grow stronger in 2019, should have been condemned by all who claim to do justice to the men who gave their lives in World War I – many believing they were dying for “freedom”. Unfortunately, the silence from most politicians, the leaders of sporting organisations as well most involved in the actual commemoration was deafening and shameful. Everyone has the right to respect their dead in the manner that they see fit, but we also need to respect the sadness of relatives of those killed (and those still being killed) by British armed forces. We need to reach out the hand of friendship, tolerance and peace, and to remember all our dead, from whatever side, in a respectful manner. However, to do this we shouldn’t distort or re-write the past, nor indeed ignore the present. - Cllr Fionntán Ó Súilleabháin Wexford County Council

The famous writer and food critic Paolo Tullio (1949-2015) wrote: “Maestro di Cucina. In Enniscorthy’s Via Veneto, master Italian chef Paolo Fresilli, President of the Italian Chefs Federation in Ireland, has been the pioneer of this movement, and is serving up the real taste of Italy. He is one of a select band, he’s an Italian chef who learned his trade before coming to Ireland. You may find this surprising, but that isn’t the norm here. In fact, I can only think of three chefs who fit that description. Call me a chauvinist, but I’m convinced that the best Italian food can only be had where there’s a chef who knows his trade from his home.

The Red Carpet in Enniscorthy i was delighted to receive my invitation from the lovely Donna sludds to attend the world premiere of slaB at the presentation centre, enniscorthy, on Monday 12th november, and even more delighted to witness all the glitz, glamour and razzmatazz of the occasion. The Presentation Centre and Little Angel Productions did Enniscorthy proud hosting the event with all the panache usually associated with a world premiere, the red carpet was laid, the Prosecco flowed, delectable chocs devoured and all the style and elegance copiously clicked by the frenzied Paparazzi. S L A B , i n t ro d u c e d b y Michael Benson, Director of Photography, and the exuberant Sharon Clancy, is a short thriller posing the question,

‘How far would you go for love?’ And Alex the lead, played convincingly by Michael Cloke, who also wrote the script, goes way beyond reason for the love of his daughter Laura played expertly both in the early years by Katie Cloke and later by Dublin actress Sinead Farrell. Tension, terror, kidnapping, brutality, butchery and love taken to the extreme are all part of this low budget production produced locally for approximately €3,500 with many of the cast and crew working long and hard hours for no remuneration. A magnificent family and community endeavour with Donna Marie Sludds as Director, Michael Cloke in the lead role of Alex, Dublin actresses Ella

Marie Carmen as Grace and Sinead Farrell as Laura, Katie Cloke plays the young Laura, Aoibhinn Hyland from Youghal as Jessica, Michael Benson as Director of Photography and Michael Duggan as on-set Photographer and sponsored by a plethora of local businesses, this short film is evidence of just what can be achieved with local talent, creativity and determination. Set, make-up, wardrobe and the now ‘infamous leg’ are to be highly commended. In fact everyone involved with this production is to be applauded for their tenacity, their unfaltering belief and their ‘we can do it’ attitude that has succeeded in creating something out of nothing but an idea.

ARE YOU We know the names of most of the bands that play the social dance circuit, but we know little of their background or how they ended up on the stage playing our favourite tunes. in a previous edition of the Slaney News i featured liam Mannering & Maria. this month i had a chin-wag with leslie Dunne of Blue Lace to find out how he, and his dad John, came to being. Both natives of Bree parish near Enniscorthy, it was during the time of the famous (and badly missed I must say!) Tops of the Parish era that John began his appearances on stage. Initially he was a singer until in 1972 he joined a newly formed band called the “Boro

DANCING?

DECLAN FLANAgAN is the South East’s leading dance teacher specialising in Irish Country Jiving & Ballroom, 1950s Rock ‘n’ Roll, Line Dancing, etc. He is also well known as a music broadcaster on Elite Country Radio 7.30am-9.00am Monday-Friday. He contributes a regular music and dance column to the Slaney News. Valley sound”. Now there’s a blast from the past! It consisted of John Dunne on bass guitar, Paddy Long on banjo, Jimmy Broaders on lead guitar and Joe White on drums, and later on Leslie on keyboards when he wasn’t at school. Larry Walsh (accordion) and Michael Dempsey (lead guitar) were founding band members. In 1985 John & Leslie

John & Leslie Dunne of Blue Lace

decided to form their own band along with Liam Wall and called it “Blue lace”. They played lots of weddings, social dances and also of course the new lounge bars that were popping up like mushrooms. In the Broadway Tavern they backed the famous sonny knowles, the Cabaret King from Dublin, who sadly only very recently passed away. They played venues like Butler’s of Broadway, Murphy’s Ballyedmond, Hamills Kilmuckridge, and a very lively spot indeed in Enniscorthy called the Boolavogue Inn. They had pondered for a long time about going to Ireland’s Mecca of music and dance, Lisdoonvarna. So finally this year they took the plunge and headed westwards. Blue Lace? Never heard of them! But after a gig in Nellie’s John & Leslie made their mark and that question won’t have to be asked again down in those parts! We here at the Slaney News wish John & Leslie all the best in the future. here are the regular dance venues in and around the south east. Fri 7th December; askamore community hall & camross Ballroom. Fri 14th December; iFa centre enniscorthy & kiltealy.

Sive on stage in Enniscorthy John B keane’s sive was first performed in listowel, county kerry, in 1959.the play was rejected by the abbey theatre, with the listowel drama group being the first to take it to the stage. now on what will almost be the 60th anniversary of the first performance, Blackstairs Mountain theatre group will be performing sive in enniscorthy for the first time.

with Declan Flanagan

As was the theme with most Irish plays of its vintage, Sive is quite bleak. Sive is an orphaned girl, living in a cottage in rural Kerry with her aunt (Mena), uncle (Mike) and grandmother (Nana). While Nana dotes on her orphaned granddaughter, Mena plots to marry the young girl off to an elderly local farmer for the promise of land and a sizable sum of money. Keane’s

SIVE by John B Keane is coming to The Presentation Centre, Enniscorthy, on the 6th, 7th, 8th & 9th December. Presented by Blackstairs Mountain Theatre.

first play to go mainstream, Sive was met with controversy, which was common for dramatic works at the time. Many took offence to the melodramatic content of the play, calling it blasphemous and pornographic based on the appearance of Sive as a young girl. The play has stood the test of time however, and is now a regular fixture in state exams, so this production is of particular interest to those sitting the Junior Cert. The play will be taking place in the Presentation Centre in Enniscorthy, from Thursday 6th of December, up to Sunday 9th December, presented with permission of the Drama League of Ireland, and in association w i t h C o u n t y We x f o rd Community Workshop. Luka Bloom in Wexford Well, Anything Quare? One of Ireland's most loved and respected singer-songwriters Luka Bloom is coming to Wexford Arts Centre on Friday 7th December to play one of his final shows of the year. Currently on a major tour of Holland and Belgium, where he plays to soldout theatres, he very much looks forward to concluding his 'Refuge' tour in a corner of Ireland where he’s much loved and respected. "The very embodiment of the folk singer, Luka Bloom has that deep sense of social justice with an uncanny ability to distil contemporary life into the pithiest and most alluring combinations of lyrics and melody lines. His voice is still as open and honest as it was over 30 years ago, and his guitar finds chord combinations that are all his own. Passion, playfulness and pause for thought: a hearty combination in any gig." – S.L, Irish Times. March 2018.

the new hilarious comedy by tom Reddy, Well, Anything Q u a re ? p e r f o r m e d b y enniscorthy Drama group is packing drinking establishments all around the town of enniscorthy. This innovative concept by EDG is taking theatre out there into the community and introducing drama to those who may not necessarily go to see it on stage. Well, Anything Quare? written and directed by Tom Reddy, is an extremely well orchestrated piece of drama that takes place at the counter of what could be any pub in Ireland. The three regulars at the bar between them know something about everything from love, life, lust to the Church, politics, to sexual preferences to sex change surgery and everything in between. What they don’t know isn’t worth talking about – and do they talk about it – well they do little else except admire the

passing scenery when three ladies on a girlie night out enter the company causing temperatures to rise and language to become even more colourful. Enter a zealous Curate with a Swear Box anxious to make a few bob for the Church and clean up the vocabulary of the local pub scene, an avaricious Publican who seizes the chance to make a quick buck, and a couple of tourists who are not quite all they seem to be and you have one hell of a good night’s entertainment. Tom Reddy has excelled himself with this one and Enniscorthy Drama are doing him justice with it. The writing is top class, the gags are sublime and the delivery is faultless and both audiences and cast are loving it – this could go a long way. My full compliments to the actors, seasoned like the versatile and venerable Fintan Kelly, Ronan P Byrne and Fergal Kelly, and newcomers like the excel-

Publican Niall Holohan making his acting debut with Enniscorthy Drama Group. Pic: Maria Nolan.

A very happy Christmas to our readers from all involved in the SLANEY NEWS – your local FREE community newspaper

LOCAL CHRISTMAS MARKETS ... We got a recent nice email from a member of the Galbally Sports and Leisure Club Committee. Galbally is a small village, not far from Enniscorthy, and like a lot of our county’s villages it has experienced the recent closure of some of its main services – in this case the local shop and pub. These losses have left a void in the community which the local Galbally Sports and Leisure Club Committee is trying to fill. The committee is highly motivated to bring life and community spirit back into the village and is keen to do a major refurbishment of the

local hall but like all such projects it will require time and fundraising. To start the process the committee has organised a Christmas Craft Fair for the 2nd of December and a trad night on the 8th December which will celebrate the hall’s 30th birthday. Your support is vital for these initiatives by a rural village which is not prepared to accept any more setbacks. A member of Marshalstown Parents’ Association has been in touch about the Christmas Craft Fair which will be held on Saturday

We Will Remember Them And Enniscorthy I am proud to say remembered her dead of WW1 with the rest of the world on the 100th anniversary of the end of the Great Wa r o n S u n d a y 11 t h November 2018. On the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month 1918 the guns fell silent bringing to an end the war to end wars which had raged across Europe and beyond from 1914 to 1918 leaving approximately 49,000 Irish men and Irish women dead. 102 of that 49,000 were from our own town of Enniscorthy and for the very first time on this day last year their names were read aloud at a ceremony at Market Square. On that same day I spoke with Town Manager Liz Hore and later with Council Chairman Keith Doyle with a view to doing something in Enniscorthy to mark the 100th anniversary of the end of WW1 and today I am delighted and honoured to say that we marked it well with a beautiful service at St. Mary`s with the Rev. Nicola Halford and later at the Presentation Centre with a solemn remembrance ceremony and the unveiling of a plaque by Council Chairman Willie Kavanagh and Minister Paul Kehoe, to all those who

fought and died from our town in WW1. Enniscorthy Historical Re-enactment Society provided a Guard of Honour as myself and Graham Cadogan read 82 Certificates that I received from the British War Graves Commission with details of those who died with addresses and next of kin in Enniscorthy. It was deeply moving to read the names along with their Regiment, the date they died, the cemetery where they are buried, the war memorial they are remembered on and their address and next of kin in Enniscorthy. This is not a definitive list as many originally from Enniscorthy could have been living elsewhere when they enlisted or indeed may not have given their home address, but to read the names Bolger, Birney, Breen, Brien, Brooks, Buttle, Byrne, Carthy, Codd, Connors, Cosgrove, Courtney, Cullen, Delaney, Dempsey, Dobbs, Doyle, Dunne, Dwyer, Gorman, Hawkins, Jordan, Kavanagh, Kelly, Leacy, Leary, Maher, Mernagh, Murphy, McDonald, Neill, Nolan, O Shea, Quirke, Reck, Redmond, R e i l l y, R o b e r t s , R o c h e ,

Sunderland, Thorpe, Whelan and Whitford from Ross Rd, Patrick Street, John Street, Shannon Hill, Mernagh Street, Redmond Street, Irish Street, Chapel Lane, Duffry Gate, Te m p l e s h a n n o n and Milehouse made it all very real. For whatever reason these men from our town left to fight in the Great War whether for adventure, Home Rule or simply to feed their families, they were brave men and deserve to be remembered as part of the history of our town as Rev. Nicola Halford quoted earlier from George Santayana, ’Those who forget their past are doomed to repeat it.’ Prayers were said for their souls and for peace by Rev. N i c o l a a n d F r. O d h r a n Furlong, Noel Franklin read the poem For The Fallen and Kay Doyle read a poignant piece penned by herself for her father who fought in the Great War and returned with all the scars and damage carried by those who survived. Bugler Anthony Nolan played the Last Post to conclude Enniscorthy’s tribute to her fallen sons one hundred years on. – Maria Nolan

28 November 2018

Promoting the best of Co. Wexford’s food and drink #TasteWexford, a tourismfocused brand which works to connect locals and tourists with authentic food and drink experiences around the cornerstone of Ireland’s Ancient East, hosted a Breakfast Industry Showcase and Workshop in association with the Wexford Food Family on Wednesday, November 7th, 2018, at Wilton Castle, just outside Enniscorthy town. The event, which was exclusively held for Wexford’s hospitality establishments – owners, managers and chefs from cafés, restaurants, visitor centres, hotels, guesthouses and B&Bs, offered an insight into why serving a quality regional breakfast, using produce from Co. Wexford and the surrounding regions, makes economic sense for their hospitality business. Keynote speakers were Georgina Campbell, founder of Georgina Campbell’s Ireland Guides and current President of the Irish Food Writers’ Guild, and Sinead Hennessy, Food Tourism Officer with Fáilte Ireland, Ireland’s National To u r i s m D e v e l o p m e n t Authority. Co-founders of #TasteWexford, Jean O’Connell and Anthony O’Toole opened the workshop by showcasing

a breakfast buffet made up of a wide range of delicious breakfast items from Wexford and the surrounding counties, focusing on cold and ambient items instead of Ireland’s famous Full Irish. After breakfast, Jean and Anthony presented an overview of #TasteWexford and its vision for Wexford to become the Model County through exceptional food and drink experiences while connecting tourists with Wexford’s heritage and the unique stories of their food and drink producers. In their picture-focused presentation, they highlighted that supporting local producers is not just detailing their

names on menus, but it is about the overall experience. Servers should know about the story behind the food and drink served – who produced it, how it was grown/made, and where they are located, and even down to why the chef has it featured on the menu today. It is this knowledge which can elevate the overall dining experience. Jean, Director of O’Connell Marketing, stated that in delivering a breakfast experience focused on quality over quantity will only “generate positive word of mouth and repeat business, one which any hospitality establishment would love to get”.

Jean and Anthony also presented some fantastic new food and drink trails and experiences they have designed with Lorraine O’Dwyer of Gallivanting Tours featuring many of Wexford’s producers like Bean and Goose Chocolates, Regan Organic Farm, Wheelock’s Fruit, Macamore Buffalo, O’Neill’s Bacon and Ballyminane Mill. They called on the hospitality establishments in Wexford to step up and provide great regional breakfasts, lunches and dinners as locals and tourists are looking for them while touring the county. Paula Ronan, co-founder and CEO of Wexford Food

Family, a network of over 45 big and small food and drink producers in Co. Wexford, presented their new food and drink directory that was recently published for the retail and hospitality industry which is available online (http://www.wexfordfoodfamily.com) and in print. “A resource that all hospitality providers should be using”, Paula says. In presenting Fáilte Ireland’s new Food and Drink Strategy 2018-2023, Sinead Hennessy stressed that “authenticity is key” when delivering any culinary experience. A champion for the Irish breakfast for many decades, Georgina Campbell identifies breakfast as the “Cinderella of the Irish Culinary Scene”. “It can be a terrific USP for anyone in hospitality – and, being that last meal for guests before paying the bill – it will sweeten the departure process and send people off in great form, eager to spread the word about their wonderful experience. People get to hear about a good breakfast, and they head straight for it.” There were some excellent

breakfast case studies delivered on the day by some of Ireland’s top hospitality providers. #TasteWexford’s new food, drink and craft hampers were displayed throughout the breakfast event. They are filled with flavours from Wexford’s variety of landscapes, the luxury food, drink and craft hampers showcase the very best food and drink offering in county Wexford. The hampers are packed into a stunning burnt finish wooden crate to symbolise the rich agricultural significance of county Wexford. This creative collection comes in three different sizes and are available online now to purchase at tastewexford.ie/hampers •The Taster Hamper - €80 •The Clever Bean Hamper €150 •The Gin-Tastic Hamper - €250 What better way to value and show appreciation to your family, friends, or business clients than with a truly unique gift this Christmas. Science - our future prosperity depends on it With the whole country, and Enniscorthy in particular, focusing more and more on science-related employment, and with the huge emphasis now being put in our education system on the STEm subjects (Science, Technology, Engineeing, maths), it is clear that science is a growth area, and with the new Technology Park currently being developed in Enniscorthy it’s great t o s e e We x f o r d C o u n t y   Council playing the leading role in the recent Science Week held throughout the county. WexSci, Wexford’s first Science Festival, ran from 11th to 18th November with events taking place all around the county. Part-funded by Science Foundation Ireland (SFI), the Festival was led by Wexford County Council in partnership with I.T. Carlow, WIT, Waterford Wexford ETB, EPA, and BIM. The aim of WexSci was to promote science, technology, engineering, and maths through a week-long innovative, fun festival, with a huge range of events in libraries, community and family resource centres, and in local schools and colleges with something to interest people of all ages and knowledge. Wexford has been identified by research from SFI as a low intervention county in terms of STEM participation. It is hoped the festival will stimulate interest and debate about STEM and encourage people to engage with science in a fun and interactive way. n

Enniscorthy Chamber update Enniscorthy Chamber of Commerce is actively engaged on a number of fronts in the run-up to the festive season. Having successfully hosted a members’ meeting with the Revenue Commissioners in relation to new PRSI Regulations which will be introduced in January, the Chamber hosted two very successful ‘Hospitality Days’ in conjunction with The Riverside Park Hotel on Wednesday, November 21st, and again on Monday, November 26th. Over 500 students from the seven second-level schools in the Enniscorthy District attended, along with their teachers, and heard presentations from various Heads of Departments within the hotel. Presentations were also made by senior members from the Hospitality Departments of both Waterford IT and Carlow IT (Wexford Campus) and by Maree Ly n g , M a n a g e r, A I B B a n k , Enniscorthy, who is President of the local Chamber. switched on to enthusiastic cheers from hundreds of children who packed the Market Square on Saturday evening, November 24th, to meet and greet Santa who arrived by Sleigh from his home in Enniscorthy’s Enchanted Castle to perform the ‘switching-on’ ceremony. Working in conjunction with the Enchanted Castle committee, the Chamber has enthusiastically supported the work of this committee and has contributed to its success. More than 750 bed nights have been booked by visitors intending to visit Santa’s Enchanted Castle and at the time of going to press, a staggering 5,000 parents and children have booked online to visit this phenomenally successful venture. The Chamber is also working in close co-operation with the Enniscorthy Business Association in promoting the campaign to ‘Shop Local’ this Christmas and has h e l p e d w i t h t h e E B A’s f r e e Christmas Draw which has a top prize of a family holiday, worth €1,500, for customers shopping in Enniscorthy in the run-up to Christmas. Customers can enter the draw in any of the many participating shops simply by making a purchase and putting their names on a ticket which will be available in each shop.

Gin win Jackford Irish Potato Gin awarded Gold Medal at the Irish Whiskey Awards 2018. Enniscorthy-based Stafford Irish Spirits were awarded a Gold Medal for Jackford Irish Potato Gin at the 2018 Irish Whiskey Awards. This is the first industry award for Jackford, the first premium distilled spirit from Stafford Irish Spirits which launched to the market in early summer 2018. Each year the drinks industry of Ireland gather at the Irish Whiskey Awards to celebrate the Irish Drinks industry. These prestigious awards, which are now in their sixth year, span over 20 categories and were judged in blind tasting sessions by members of the Celtic Whiskey Club, Irish Whiskey Society, Cork Whiskey Society, Galway Whiskey Trail and Kilkenny Whiskey Guild. Owner John Stafford was thrilled with the accolade for his Jackford Irish Potato Gin.

Another recent initiative of the Chamber was the very successful ‘Morning Mix’ programme on South East Radio hosted by Alan Corcoran. The two-hour prime listening slot highlighted the many attractions of Enniscorthy and dealt with the large number of new shop openings in Enniscorthy in recent months, particularly Grant’s Pharmacy, M&M Meats and Dessie Sheehan on Rafter Street which has helped rejuvenate the centre of Enniscorthy. McCauley Chemists is also opening a new outlet on Rafter Street before Christmas which will further help improve trading in the centre of the town. The programme also acknowledged, with regret, the closure of some business premises but noted that new openings have far exceeded closures in the past 12 months, a clear indication that Enniscorthy is beginning to fight back from the ravages of the recession. With many new initiatives in the pipeline including the new Technology Park at Salville, the planned re-development of the Murphy Flood’s Hotel site in Market Square, coupled with the re-generation of the Templeshannon area, 2019 promises to be a very exciting year in the commercial life of Enniscorthy. n

Having invested greatly in researching and developing the unique recipe behind Jackford, pre-production blind tastings were arranged involving industry experts to ensure the end product would become a market leader. He felt the key to entering the gin market was to produce a quality, distinctive gin using his Wexford potatoes from Slaney Farm Produce Ltd as a key ingredient along with a secret mix of plantae and botanicals. It has been a busy few months since the launch of Jackford for the Stafford Irish Spirits team who have expanded to nationwide distribution of their gin from an initial local launch. In recent weeks the team have agreed distribution in Northern Ireland and the UK. They have recently returned home from the US with a view to exporting. There are also future product development plans as Stafford Irish Spirits intend to expand its portfolio of gins as well as adding innovative infusions and flavours. n

VET DIARY FOR DECEMBER

with the Moyne Veterinary Hospital

WEXFORD MENTAL HEALTH ASSOCIATION

Joe Kavanagh writes about having to operate on his own dog.

40 YEARS ANNIVERSARY

There is an old saying, "You don't find the dog, the dog finds you!" Well a little over seven years ago a greyhound bitch strayed into me and took up residence very quickly, I called her Lady, and that's what she is... to her very toes as they say. A couple of months ago she developed a small swelling just below her hock, on the lower part of her right hind leg. Initially I thought she had bumped it off something but it didn't go down and over time it started to get bigger. Where it was, I was reluctant to operate as it seemed to be firmly attached to the tissue around it, namely the achilles tendon which is very important for movement. Also it has quite a few nerves and blood vessels criss-crossing this area too so I decided to hold off surgery if possible. She seemed to be doing fine, lame the odd time if she did too much going, but overall was in great fettle... but slowly the growth kept getting bigger and Lady became a little bit more lame... Last week I decided, right this is it... Ive gotta bite the bullet and go in there to operate. It’s amazing how nervous you get when you've to operate on your own dog and it gave me a new perspective on what clients and owners go through when they leave their animals in the care of vets for an operation. It was good to be on the other side of the table and understand what it's like to be waiting for our pets to come through an operation.

The operation went well, Lady is now back walking on the leg and stitches will come out in another week or so. She's back to guarding the place and hopefully will be for many years to come. Just a note of thanks to all of our clients and customers over this last year for your loyal support and custom. We wish you a very magical Christmas and that the new year is a good one for you all. Happy Christmas from all the team at the Moyne Veterinary Hospital. n

A local contributor looks at life today in Enniscorthy and beyond christmas shoPPing As Christmas approaches the minds of many will turn to Christmas shopping arrangements. The attraction of online is strong as are the so-called bargains of days like Black Friday and so on. However, it is vitally important that we should remember the local retailer. The backbone of any town is the retail sector. Those involved in the sale of goods through our shops give great service to the public, not just at Christmas, but all year around. They are there through quiet business times as well as the shopping peaks of Christmas and so on. They also give good employment and make a significant contribution to the economy of the area. Therefore, it is incumbent on all of us to do our utmost to spend as much of our hard earned cash locally as it is possible to do. Support our own so as that they in turn can continue to make their contribution to the economy of our country. Drink Driving It is incredible to think that some people drink alcohol and

then drive. As we near the festive season the parties and other functions will be underway and many who participate will act responsibly. By that I mean that they will enjoy a few drinks and make sensible arrangements to get home. Regrettably a few morons will do otherwise. They will either consider that the one or two drinks which they have consumed will not affect their driving or will reckon that it really doesn’t matter as the chances of being detected are so slim that it is worth the risk. The risk that these people consider to be the big one is detection. However, the real risk is the damage that they can potentially cause to themselves or more importantly others by their reckless behaviour. The new driving laws make it clear that even one small drink can put a driver over the limit. Therefore, the oldest rule in the book applies, “If you drink don’t drive.” Pensions Debacle The pensions debacle brought about by the 2012 social welfare changes continues. The origi-

call it that, is Councillor Michael Sheehan of New Ross. Maybe if he or someone in his office reads this, he will be driven to raise the level of protest concerning this matter again, as he has successfully done in the past, and demand a straight forward return to the pre 2012 situation for all pensioners in this country.

View from the Hill nal promise by the present government, which in fairness is trying to sort out the problem, is beginning to look a bit false. This promise, by Regina Doherty, Minister for Social Protection, was that the pension cuts would be sorted out by a review to be held in the autumn of 2018. The reality is somewhat different. It appears now that t h o s e a ff e c t e d a re b e i n g informed by letter that this review will take place in the first part of 2019. Therefore, a further delay will occur in compensating the victims of this

massive pensions robbery. Many of those in the category will have gone to their eternal reward before money, which is rightfully theirs, is returned to them. It also appears that a lot of people will not get the result that they expect from this situation and will still be short-changed when the final verdict in each case is given. Further explanation is required from the Department of Social Protection on this issue, and it is required soon. The leader of the pension reform movement, if I can

brexit That dreaded word. Every normal person is sick to death hearing of it at this stage. The effect of Brexit on Ireland is potentially disastrous. Our exports will suffer greatly as Britain, one of our biggest customers, will become much more expensive to get goods into without the benefit of the single market concessions our exporters enjoy presently. Also of course importing goods from across the Irish sea will be nightmare with Ireland being forced to apply any E.U. duties required by Brussels to anything which lands here. It did look a little earlier in the month that a reasonable compromise on all of this had been reached but our neighbours up the road

in the DUP (Foster and gang) scuttled all of that. Despite the fact that the majority of businesses and farming organisations and indeed the people of the six counties which make up Northern Ireland do not want anything remotely resembling a hard border, the DUP put their allegiance to Queen and country before the well being of their people. The cruel irony of the entire situation is that most people in Britain do not want anything whatever to do with these extreme unionists and would gladly see them rock off into the Atlantic. The reality is that the Tories in London need their votes in Westminster so the ten DUP fanatics who put a flag before a feed on the table are being allowed to effectively destroy the economy of two countries. And that’s democracy. Finally... May we wish all our readers a Happy and Safe Christmas and a Prosperous New Year. n We are often asked: Who is the “View from the Hill” columnist? All we can say is that the author’s surname is NOT Doyle!

AUDI A6

AUDI A6 the new audi a6 has recently arrived in irish showrooms, priced from €50,800. audi’s popular executive car has undergone a serious makeover with mild hybrid technology now a feature and a new cabin packed full of the most modern infotainment and assistance features. The new Audi A6 saloon has clearly been inspired by the larger A8. Audi claims that the new A6 “condenses A8-style technological sophistication and refinement”. In typical Audi fashion, styling of the new A6 is a mere evolution, but bears

all the hallmarks of contemporary Audi design language. The new A6 has a classic Audi silhouette and stately presence that goes with the territory of a premium saloon. Yet inside is where the true revolution has taken place. The Audi A6 was starting to feel old-fashioned, but not anymore. The new Audi A6 gets Audi’s slick new cabin design that really speaks of the ‘Vorsprung durch Technik’ that the brand has been built upon. Material quality is also excellent throughout. W.L.D. asks: “Are we there yet?”

Attending Wexford Local Development’s ‘Are We There Yet?’ Conference in the Spiegeltent in October were: L-R: Madeline Quirke, Event Moderator; Elizabeth Berry, Traveller Community Health Programme, WLD; Polly Connors, WLD; Dave Ormonde, Company Secretary, WLD; Michael Wall, Chairperson, WLD Board of Directors; Councillor Barbara-Anne Murphy; Jacinta Kitt, Author & Lecturer; Ciairín de Buis, CEO Women For Election and Emily Logan, Chief Commissioner, Irish Human Rights & Equality Commission.

on saturday, october 13th, Wexford local Development posed the question Are We There Yet? in relation to equality for women in ireland at its annual community conference, which was held this year in the wonderful venue that is the spiegeltent on Wexford Quay. the event was attended by over 160 men and women. It was an inspirational event with positive discussions, resulting in many ideas for community actions to bring about new opportunities for empowering women living in communities around Co. Wexford. The event highlighted many barriers to participation that are experienced by women in Wexford and beyond. Only 4 of the 34 County Councillors in Wexford are women and of the 158 members of Dail Eireann, 78% are

male. “I think we know the answer already” said Emily Logan, Chief Commissioner for the Irish Human Rights and Equality Commission. “There is a long road to travel before women and girls in Ireland are truly living in an equal society”. “Although Ireland is fourth in the world on the UN development index, we fall to 23rd place when it comes to gender equality.” Despite some of the stark statistics that were discussed keynote speaker Emily Logan was nonetheless optimistic. “I think we will see this year historically as an important one when we look back, whether it is in politics, sport or in society. You can feel the energy, the passion and the creativity of the new generation of young women who are more than ready to pick up the torch”. Ms. Logan drew attention to

increasing levels of participation in politics. She pointed to the 94% increase in voter turnout by those aged 18 – 24 in the referendum on the 8th Amendment. Ciairin De Buis, CEO of Women for Election, also addressed the conference, speaking of her organisation’s work in training women who are interested in running for electoral office. Women for Election will be working with WLD in early 2019 to make this training available in Co. Wexford confirmed Ciairin. Cllr Barbara-Anne Murphy described her own experience as one of the four female councillors currently sitting on Wexford County Council. Participation is not just about politics and two members of WLD’s Community Health team, Polly Connors and

Elizabeth Connors, spoke of their experiences as women from a minority ethnic community. Their stories showed how participation in the labour force impacted on their lives. Their hope is to encourage their community to stay in or return to education. Other speakers included positivity coach Jacinta Kitt and recently retired CEO of We x f o r d C h a m b e r o f Commerce, Madeline Quirke, who was the MC for the event. A group of female students, from a number of secondary schools in Co. Wexford, made powerful contributions addressing issues such as women’s under-representation at senior level in politics and banking, equal pay, the sharing of care responsibilities between men and women, sexual harassment and the situation of lone parents. Michael Wall, chairperson of Wexford Local Development, said, “The battle against misogyny is a battle for all of us… The struggle for equality is not just for movie stars, the women who are most exploited are the ones with the least power to resist. The future is in our hands. I hope our work will speed this along.” WLD’s core purpose is to address inequalities and with 76,000 women in Co. Wexford, the company seeks to encourage the empowerment of women to take leadership roles. WLD intends to focus on the positives using the many ideas that were shared by participants on the day. n

The best kept secrets on 15th november i attended a fascinating talk at enniscorthy library about a librarian, a nazi spy and ireland’s secret role in turning the tide of World War ii. now beat that for fascinating! Marc McMenamin, teacher, author and documentary maker was at Enniscorthy Library to speak about his debut novel Codebreaker which tells the true story of Dublin Librarian Dr. Richard Hayes described by MI5 as Ireland’s ‘greatest unsung hero’ who cracked the Gortz Cipher – a Nazi code that had perplexed some of the greatest minds at the infamous Bletchley Park during World War II. Marc, a gifted storyteller, introduced the library audience to a clandestine Ireland teeming with Nazi spies, Secret Agents and Codebreakers – in fact it appears that at the time Dublin was a hot bed of intrigue and espionage. Not a lot of people know that – and McMenamin’s Codebreaker uncovers a secret history that has remained hidden in plain view for the past 70 years. The focus of Dr. Hayes attention was a German spy called Herman Gortz who was parachuted into Ireland in 1940, along with quite a few others it appears – one by the name of Gunther Schultz was even dropped in Wexford, near Taghmon.

Dublin became the Casablanca of the North with the IRA leadership of the day, Maurice Twomey and Sean Russell, encouraging the Irish/Nazi link. Gortz was provided with safe houses and sent coded messages back to Berlin encrypted in a cipher to keep them hidden from MI5. Hayes, a gifted mathematician and cryptographer, was given the go ahead by Taoiseach of the day, Eamon de Valera, to work at cracking the cipher and intercepting messages sent by Gortz and a house in North Dublin owned by the German Embassy called Nazi House. But because Dev and the new Irish State were eager to maintain a stance of neutrality much of Hayes work and success went unseen and certainly unannounced and until now he has been virtually unheard of in his own country. But all that is about to change with this most intriguing tale told with passion, enthusiasm and admiration for an unassuming, mild mannered academic with an extraordinary mind. – Maria Nolan

St Patrick’s led 3-1 at half time with goals from Liam Treacy (2) followed by a stunning goal from Dylan Larkin just before half-time causing delirium amongst the St Patrick’s players. St Patrick’s were on a fivegame unbeaten streak and

with a two-goal cushion at half-time they looked like continuing that winning run. However, in the second half Youthreach clawed their way back to make it 3-3 with a brace from Dylan O’Sullivan. 28 November 2018

Happy Birthday to Us! F r o m 2 - 4 t h n o v e m b e r, enniscorthy hosted its 5th annual Wexford literary Festival and what an amazing birthday celebration was had, with acclaimed authors from all over ireland and the Uk converging on the town for a fantastic feast of fabulous prose, poetry, art, film and drama, making our Festival one of the most popular and most visited in the country. The feedback from visiting writers, readers and potential writers has been phenomenal, complimenting both the Festival, the town, and the welcome they received here and pledging to return again for next year’s event. The Festival opened with a flourish on Friday 2nd November with the introduction of a new and innovative collaboration between local authors and artists, with artists Nadia Corrigan, Lar O’Duinn, Oonagh Latchford and Kate Tyrrell creating beautiful pieces of art in response to 4 pieces of prose by Festival Committee authors Carmel Harrington, Caroline Busher, Sheila Forsey and Shane Dunphy and the results were stunning and on display at The Presentation Centre. Opening Night continued with dramatic readings by Enniscorthy Drama and Wayside Players of the final 4 plays in the Billy Roche International Short Play Award, with Wexford’s Declan Dempsey’s excellent play

A Sergeant and A Gentleman being chosen as the winner by an astute panel of judges – Elizabeth Whyte, Carol Long and Andy Doyle. Declan was presented with his cheque and trophy by the man himself, Billy Roche, who also did the honour of officially opening the Festival. Chairman of Enniscorthy & District Council Willie Kavanagh complimented the Festival Committee on an excellent lineup of both events and distinguished authors saying that the Festival has been such an asset to the town and so beneficial to existing and aspiring authors and he wished it every success going forward. Saturday at the Riverside Park Hotel was an oasis of literary talent with panel discussions chaired by South East Radio’s Karen Tomkins, beginning with The Short Story: Life at a Slant delivered very eloquently and most definitely at a slant by authors Sinead Gleeson and June Caldwell, Horror & Science Fiction Masterclass with Dr. Sarah Cleary who has a PhD in Horror (who knew anything like that even existed!), our own adorable if scary Caroline Busher and the remarkable Andrew Cartmel scriptwriter for Dr. Who joining us all the way from the UK. And if we weren’t scared enough by horror fiction the next discussion – Cracking Crime – with acclaimed crime jour-

nalist Paul Williams (whom I might add was the most charming and entertaining lunch guest), the lovely Jane Casey and our own Inspector Wexford – Shane Dunphy, who likes to end each novel on a cliffhanger, proved yet again that real life is often stranger, more scary and definitely more horrific. We invited in Adele Parks from the UK who has written 18 novels in 18 years to talk to us not just about her latest novel I Invited Her In but to discuss her writing life and share her journey with us from the beginning to being published in 26 different languages. This was Adele’s Irish debut and this bubbly, friendly, warmhearted and extraordinarily honest lady was an immediate hit with her first ever Irish audience and is already planning her return trip next year with her husband and family. New Voices, another innovative addition to our Readers & Writers Day, produced some wonderfully performed and exquisitely written pieces from Sheila Forsey, Tina O’Callaghan, Mary Cotter, Stephanie Hanley Baird, Karen McDonnell and Derek Flynn. The inspirational trio of Wexford Literary Festival Chair and bestselling author Carmel Harrington, Historical Fiction bestselling author Hazel Gaynor and bestseller and Co-Founder of the Inspiration Project, Catherine Ryan Howard, provided us with invaluable insights on How to Write a Bestselling Novel, from beginning, middle to end. Saturday concluded with a magical, candlelit evening at Enniscorthy Castle where the soft spoken, gentle and positively frank, Liz Nugent, was interviewed or should that be ginterviewed by the probing Carmel Harrington with questions on life, childhood, writing, books, and finally one from the beyond,

‘When you arrive at the pearly gates and God is there to meet you what would you like him to say?’ ‘The cocktail cabinet is to your right,’ was Liz’s quick retort. A woman after me own heart! S u n d a y, t h e i c o n i c Athenaeum was the venue for our Awards Ceremony with Jupiter Jones from the UK claiming first prize in the Colm Toibin International Short Story Award for her entry Moth. A Joseph Black from Antrim came in second place for his entry The Price of Everything and Michael Harnett in third place for his very moving tale Tell Me. Prizes were presented by Chairman of Wexford County Council, Mr. Keith Doyle, who was lavish in his praise of the Committee and the award winners saying that the Festival has truly gone international and is most professionally organised. Judge June Caldwell applauded the winners and the standard of writing of the entries saying that she thoroughly enjoyed reading the beautiful stories presented and commending the winner as truly outstanding. Poetry prizes were presented by Anne Haverty, the wife of the late Anthony Cronin, who

said Anthony would have been delighted to have his name added to the prestigious competition. Judges John Kelly and Denis Collins appraised the entries saying that the quality of the writing was top quality. J o a n M o r r i s s e y f ro m Tipperary took first prize in the Anthony Cronin International Poetry Award for her poem Wash Day, with James Leader of the UK and Luxembourg coming in second with his entry Europe 1945 and Margaret Galvin, originally from Tipperary, now living in Wexford, took third prize for her piece Flying Pigs. A very full and inspiring weekend of writing including

a wonderful Children’s Book Trailer Competition at the Presentation on Saturday morning with bestselling children’s authors E.R. Murray and Caroline Busher enthralling the young minds and hopefully instilling a love of books and reading in them. There was certainly something for everyone at the 5th Wexford Literary Festival and most definitely cause for celebration of a very successful five years, an ever popular and growing Festival and another major attraction to the town of Enniscorthy. So here’s to the next five! – Maria Nolan

HANNA & FRANCIS SHEEHY SKEFFINGTON On Thursday 8th November I had the good fortune to attend a lecture at Enniscorthy Library on Hanna & Francis Sheehy Skeffington given by their granddaughter Dr. Micheline Sheehy Skeffington, Plant Ecologist and Women’s Rights Activist. And when I say fortunate that is exactly what I mean. Dr. Sheehy Skeffington spoke with pride, passion and conviction of her amazing grandparents Hanna Dr. Micheline Sheehy Skeffington with Librarian, Jarlath Glynn.

and Francis who were years ahead of their time and played their part in the struggle for Irish freedom and the Suffragette movement. In fact Micheline is certain that she can see the influence of her grandparents in the 1916 Proclamation demanding ‘equal rights for all citizens’. Both grandparents were close friends of Proclamation signatories C o n n o l l y, P e a r s e a n d McDonagh. Hanna Sheehy from Cork and Francis Skeffington from Cavan met in Dublin when both were in university and when they married they both decided to take each other’s name and became the Sheehy Skeffingtons. Both became very active in the Suffragette movement with journalist Frank founding the Irish Citizen newspaper in 1912 and Hanna being one of two women arrested for ‘smashing windows in Dublin Castle’.

Francis became Vice Chairman of the Irish Citizen Army in 1913 and is described as one of the martyrs of the 1916 Rising as he was arrested by Captain John Bowen Colthurst when trying to prevent the Dublin poor from looting and giving the Rising a bad name. On the orders of the same Captain Bowen Colthurst he was executed the following morning with two other journalists. After an enquiry into his death it was found that the said Captain Bowen Colthurst was suffering some kind of mental instability and Francis’ widow Hanna was offered the sum of £10,000 to buy her silence on the matter which she refused and took herself and her young son Eoin to the States where she did a tour of America telling anyone who would listen what the British were doing in Ireland. Hanna met with huge support from the Irish Americans

and her first speech in New York – British Militarism as I have known it – packed Carnegie Hall. She was the only Irish activist to meet with Woodrow Wilson and returned to Ireland in 1918 and joined Sinn Fein. She continued her efforts to secure the vote for women which was achieved the same year. Micheline’s lecture was so informative and backed up with many family photographs making it very real and extremely interesting. It was lovely to witness her pride in her grandparents and so understandable given the remarkable people they were and their desire to see a free and Independent Ireland treating and cherishing all her citizens equally. Micheline is currently working on a documentary on her grandparents which she hopes to get RTE to purchase. Can’t wait Micheline. – Maria Nolan
