With the Local Elections looming this coming May, the runners in the race for the Enniscorthy Municipal District Council / Wexford County Council are lining up for what will be a fiercely fought battle. The Boundary Commission Report published last summer recommended that Enniscorthy and Kilmuckridge be amalgamated into a 10-seater District, however a Statutory Instrument issued in December stipulated that Kilmuckridge would be amalgamated with Gorey instead. This means that the Enniscorthy District will now only have six Councillors (instead of the existing eight) on the 34-member County Council leading to a lot of anger among the sitting Enniscorthy councillors. While candidates have until April to declare themselves, at this stage it’s looking like in the Enniscorthy District Fine Gael will be running Cllr Paddy Kavanagh, Cllr Kathleen Codd-Nolan and newcomer from Ballyhogue, Cathal Byrne; Fianna Fáil will be running Cllr Keith Doyle, Cllr Barbara-Anne Murphy and newcomer Aidan Browne; Sinn Féin’s Cllr Johnny Mythen will be look-
Gerald O’Donoghue of Renua
ing to be elected again as will independent Cllr John O’Rourke. Jackser Owens will be running as an independent having narrowly failed to hold onto his seat at the last local elections in 2014. Gerald O’Donoghue from Davidstown will be running for the first time, representing Renua, and will also run in the next General Election. Well known campaigner on a range of local and national issues, Annette Byrne Moran (proprietor of Annette’s Flowers), is considering running also. With the reduced number of seats on offer, the coming months will be very interesting as the election campaign unfolds. n

THE OUTLETS! 230 OUTLETS! THE SLANEY SLANEY NEWS NEWS ISISNOW NOWAVAILABLE AVAILABLE IN IN 230
In our January issue we addressed the ongoing concerns of some people about the future of the Enniscorthy Flood Defence Scheme. Since then we’ve continued to hear all the right noises that the scheme is going ahead as planned, with the main work due to commence at the end of this year or the beginning of 2020 (see article page 10). Another matter of grave concern to residents of the town, and particularly those on the east side, is the Templeshannon Regeneration Scheme and the flow of traffic through the area. The January monthly meeting of Wexford County Council agreed that the existing two-way traffic system at Templehannon, Enniscorthy, should remain in place. This followed a meeting of Enniscorthy Municipal District Council in December which discussed the Templeshannon Regeneration Scheme and which favoured keeping the two-way flow of traffic through Templeshannon. The members’ views were framed following local consultations and public meetings on the matter which left them in no doubt that a one-way traffic flow through Templeshannon was unacceptable. So, both the local and county councils have agreed to keep the two-way flow in existence. Wexford County Council will now revisit the Templeshannon Regeneration plans and bring forward new proposals within the next year which will take into account the wishes of both Councils and the residents of the area that any new traffic management plan should include two-way traffic through Templeshannon. – Frank Corcoran

View from the Hill
A local contributor looks at life today in Enniscorthy and beyond
Destruction of Local Government The recent furore concerning the new electoral areas in County Wexford and the forthcoming local elections bring the position of local government into focus. The term Local Government was introduced when Ireland actually had such a thing. From the foundation of the state to 1940 the elected councillors had sufficient powers to run the show. They had the power to hire and fire, to raise local finance and to spend it as they wished. In other words when people elected a council they put in place a local government to govern their area for the coming five years. In 1940, during the height of the emergency as we called the war, the legislation was changed to remove practically all powers from the elected councillors and handed to county managers. Furthermore, the local elections due in 1940 were cancelled until
1945 so the councils elected in 1935 had a ten-year term. By 1955 the realisation dawned that the stripping of powers from the elected representatives and handing them to unelected officials was a step in the wrong direction. In that year legislation was introduced to divide the powers of local government into what was described as Reserved Functions which were the powers given to the elected representatives and Executive Functions which detailed the powers retained by the managers. This system was reasonably fair and operated well for a number of years.
Fianna Fáil under Jack Lynch promised to abolish domestic rates in its 1977 general election manifesto, won a landslide, and implemented this policy with effect from 1979.
In 1977 the then government removed the necessity of local government to raise funds from domestic rates. Up to that point the three sources of finance for councils were domestic and commercial rates and direct government grants. For political populist reasons, rather than reform an
outdated system, they simply abolished domestic rates. This was a bad blow to the councils but it also had an effect on councillors who were elected after the 1979 elections. The loss of domestic rates revenue was replaced by direct government grant which over the years dimin-

ished and therefore created the need for councillors to raise local finance.
them a few votes. Therefore, local government ceased to properly function.
Prior to 1979 all councillors had to, from time to time, take very unpopular decisions such as increasing on an annual basis domestic and commercial rates. The councillors knew full well that with power came responsibility and sometimes taking unpopular decisions came with the territory.
Successive governments had no choice but take, bit by bit, the responsibilities of local government on board. So, not surprisingly, local government gradually died and it became what it is today, Local Administration.
However, come the late 1980’s a number of problems arose. The elected representatives were asked to consider a number of thorny issues such as the introduction of property tax, water rates, yes back then it was an issue, the thorny issue of incineration, charges for refuse collection and so on. The difficulty was that these elected representatives, rather than doing the correct thing, continuously did the popular thing which was not to do anything which might cost
The question then arises do we need councillors? In fairness we probably do. There will always be a need for people to represent the public in the face of bureaucracy. But those who offer themselves for election must be clear that their powers are few, and unless there is a complete reform of local government, will become less over the coming years. If then a proper reform ever comes to pass those elected will have to have the courage to do the correct thing rather than the popular thing. Any comment to: viewcolumn@gmail.com n
Sky News journalist will launch Jim McGovern’s book sky news journalist Enda brady will launch a 300-page memoir by his former st Mary’s Cbs teacher, James McGovern, at the riverside park hotel, Enniscorthy, on Wednesday 20th february at 7.00pm. John White, the former General Secretary of the Association of Secondary Teachers of Ireland (ASTI), will be a guest speaker at the launch. The book titled Stand Up, Speak Out and sub-titled Memoir of a Public Speaking and Debating Tutor tells the 32year story of how James McGovern, a well-known Wexford and Longford county footballer, and secondary school teacher, trained students from St Mary’s CBS Enniscorthy to overcame shyness and lack of confidence to become many times national public speaking and debating champions. Accounts of the students, of whom Enda Brady was one, their training and the school and colleges and university teams that they encountered all over Ireland together with photographs are presented in the book. Over 32 years of his 37 years as a teacher, James McGovern trained the St. Mary’s CBS teams to win the national MHAI Project, the Knights of Columbanus Public Speaking competition and the prestigious university competition – the Phil Speaks. He is a prominent GAA activist, having been involved with Glynn-Barntown and as a member of the Wexford senior football team. He has trained Wexford Minor Football and U21s and has managed the

TOWN TALK
As Chairman of Wexford County Council and a long-standing member of Enniscorthy Municipal District Council (formerly Enniscorthy Town Council) I am fortunate to be in a position to drive a lot of positive changes coming down the tracks for Enniscorthy. I am delighted to have the opportunity afforded by this new monthly column to share with you some information about these developments. In this second column I’d like to talk a l i t t l e a b o u t E n n i s c o r t h y ’s Courthouse which is being renovated by Wexford Co. Council.
WITH CLLR KEITH DOYLE MEMBER OF ENNISCORTHY MUNICIPAL DISTRICT COUNCIL AND CHAIRMAN OF WEXFORD COUNTY COUNCIL
6 February 2019
www.slaneynews.com
A few years ago I met the County Manager and senior members of Wexford County Council to do a “health check” on Enniscorthy and to discuss a short-to-medium-term path forward in many areas – jobs, office accommodation, retailing, recreation, parks and open spaces. In last month’s edition I covered Enniscorthy’s new Technology Park which is progressing at a rapid pace. In this issue I want to give some space to our Courthouse project. The Courthouse on Court Street is an
Enniscorthy Courthouse: New state-of-the-art office accommodation there will be a huge asset for the town.
iconic cultural building in the centre of Enniscorthy. It was a makeshift hospital in 1798 and was also used in 1916 by the Irish and National Volunteers. It is the last vacant civic building in the town and has been unused for far too long. The building is centrally located, and is critical to improving footfall in the important retail area of Rafter Street. As Chairman of Wexford County Council, I was delighted to co-sign contracts to refurbish the Courthouse last November. Tom O’Brien Construction is now at an advanced stage in its work which will
see the provision of high quality office space in the Courthouse in what will be a state-of-the-art property solution with high quality broadband. Works on the building include the insertion of a mezzanine structure, new finishes and fittings throughout, modification of existing mechanical and electrical systems, repair and conservation works. The building will be finished this summer and will initially provide a temporary home for Enniscorthy Municipal District officials while their Market Square building gets renovated. Once the officials return to the Market Square,
the Courthouse will then be made available as office accommodation for local and incoming businesses offering a perfect alternative to expensive office rents in Dublin and a real chance to ease the situation of people commuting from the county to work in Dublin, clogging up the road system from as early as 4am every morning. The opening of the new bypass this summer, which will conveniently connect Enniscorthy to major urban centres, will be a game-changer and we will be ready for the opportunities available. Roll on the summer! n

Orchard Park Opening Soon! Orchard Park is a new urban park and walkway in Enniscorthy, linking The Presentation Centre to Irish Street. Work commenced on the project back in 2017 but the contractors, Crawfords, went into administration before the work could be completed. Another firm, Sole Sport & Leisure Ltd, commenced work to complete the project in August 2018. Approval has now been given to proceed with the final variations including improvement works at both entrances. This work is expected to be completed by the end of February and according to Wexford County Council senior official, John Carley, at the January meeting of Enniscorthy Municipal District, the Park will open most likely in March this year. n –––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––

Enniscorthy Flood Defence Scheme Update Minister paul Kehoe arranged for representatives of Enniscorthy & District Chamber to meet the Minister for opW, Kevin boxer Moran, o n 2 3 r d J a n u a r y, a t t h e Minister’s office in Dublin. Minister Kehoe took the opportunity to say: “I, like everyone in Enniscorthy, want to see this €50 million project completed as soon as possible. A huge amount of groundwork has already been done on a scheme that we have been waiting on, not only for years, but generations. My understanding is that construction will start later this year or early next year and that the scheme will take between two and a half and three years before it is finished. Obviously the sooner this scheme is complete the better – but there are planning and construction stages that the project has to go through. I know Wexford County Council are doing all they can to ensure these targets are met.” The Chamber put a series of specific questions to the Minister and it is worth repeating those here together with the replies received from his Dept. When is the scheme likely to start?
The scheme construction is expected to start late 2019/ early 2020, following successful public exhibition and confirmation of the scheme. When will the tender for the appointment of a contractor be advertised? Tenders for the appointment of contractors are expected to be advertised mid-2019. how long after the tender documents are advertised before a contractor is appointed? The tender process can take 6 months or longer to complete. This will be dependent on the level of engagement regarding clarifications etc required between the contracting authority and the relevant tenderers. is it a single contract for the complete job or will it be in the form of two separate contracts – one for the bridge and a second for the flood alleviation works of the scheme? It is envisaged there will be a number of separate contracts, for example, the new road bridge, the pedestrian bridge, flood defences, dredging works. how long will the Minister take to review all documentation once it is supplied to his Department?
The confirmation process does not have a definitive timeline, submitted documents must be reviewed by the relevant experts and may require clari f i c a t i o n . To t h i s e n d WCC/OPW have already initiated a review of the EIAR and NIS to ensure as much as possible they will conform to all requirements, and as such not cause any delay to the process. once reviewed, how long will it take the Minister to approve the scheme? On completion of the relevant reviews and checks, the formal Confirmation can be issued quickly by the Minister for P u b l i c E x p e n d i t u re a n d Reform. has all the relevant documentation required by the Department been supplied b y We x f o r d C o u n t y Council? Scheme Confirmation Documents will be submitted to the Department following the Public Exhibition process to be held in Enniscorthy. The scheme documents required for the public exhibition are currently being prepared and reviewed by WCC. The exhibition is scheduled to take place end March / April.
At the Enniscorthy & District Chamber meeting with the Minister for OPW, Kevin Boxer Moran, on 23rd January, were L-R: Jimmy Gahan, Minister Paul Kehoe, Minister Moran, Maree Lyng, John O’Leary, Michael Bennett.
is the money for the scheme still ring-fenced? The funding required remains committed within OPW multiannual capital budgets. Will a contractor be on site and working before the end of 2019? The main scheme is expected to start late 2019/ early 2020, following public exhibition and confirmation of the scheme. Can this work be fast-tracked in any way in order to minimise disruption to business in Enniscorthy?
Vigil in Ferns
A very large crowd turned out for the Vigil Mass in Ferns on 14th January for the woman tragically found dead last month at Ballyandrew. A candlelit vigil took place at St. Aidan’s Church, Ferns, and a procession around the Vee before returning to the church for a mass in memory of the deceased. Books of condolences were available to sign on the night. May she Rest In Peace.
It is proposed to build the new road bridge first in order to minimise traffic disruption during the construction of the flood defences in the town centre. The Project Resident Engineer will liaise closely with local business and home owners to ensure that disruption is kept to a minimum. Can Minister Moran clarify the time frame involved in the construction of this scheme from start to finish? It is expected it will take 3 years to construct the project. n
EXPECTED TIMETABLE ● ●

Public Exhibition to begin March/April 2019. Scheme documents submitted to DPER for Confirmation June/July 2019 (process expected to take 5 to 6 months). Tender Process begins June 2019. Construction start Dec 2019/Jan 2020 (new roadbridge to be constructed first). Works to take approximately 3 years to complete.

Developing trade links with Savannah, USA
Wexford County Council, spearheaded by its Chairman, Enniscorthy Councillor Keith Doyle, is forging strong trade links with Savannah, USA.
Great strides have been made in recent years in forging links between Co. Wexford and savannah in Georgia, usa. The majority of Wexford famine emigrants settled in Savannah and by the mid 1800s 25% of the white Savannah population was from Ireland and 56% of those Irish were from Co. Wexford. Many of those Wexford people contributed greatly towards shaping the economic success of Savannah which is now home to the second largest port on the East Coast of the USA. In recent years excellent relations have been nurtured between Co. Wexford and Savannah and one such exam-
ple is called Tradebridge which has come to life with a simple vision: to open new trade opportunities between the two regions. This innovative collaboration involves the Savannah Economic Development Authority, the World Trade Center Savannah and Wexford County Council, spearheaded by its Chairman, Enniscorthy Councillor Keith Doyle. The initiative is also fully supported by Enterprise Ireland and the Wexford Chambers. The first phase of the initiative involves five Wexford companies exporting to Savannah and five Savannah companies exporting to Europe with Wexford as their test market and support hub. In both We x f o rd a n d S a v a n n a h , Development Officers have been appointed with the sole aim of ensuring the success of those companies chosen as part of Phase 1 of Tradebridge. We understand also that Savannah University is taking a keen interest in developments at Enniscorthy’s new Technology Park currently under construction next door to the St Senan’s Hospital complex. All these linkages are positive for Enniscorthy and Co. Wexford generally and will no doubt lead to investment and jobs in the years ahead. n

Coláiste Bríde – Unbridled Talent
Coláiste Bríde’s unbridled talent was unleashed once again at the annual Junk Kouture Fashion Show on 17th January as young fashionistas strutted their stuff on the catwalk in mouth-watering designs crafted and created from everyday junk that would normally find its way into the bin, or worse still, desecrating our beautiful beaches and coastline or polluting our rivers and seas. Students were challenged to create a wearable couture design and submit the photos of their finished outfit online for judging. This year the students worked with art & design teachers, Ms Frances Kervick and Ms Kyla Brambley, and Transition Year programme co-ordinator Margo Whelan. Coláiste Bríde hosted an amazing fashion show of all the stunningly creative designs to give Transition Year students the opportunity to showcase their ingenuity and style and give those attending the chance to witness the dedication, commitment and teamwork of these young and talented designers. A maximum of three students can work on a single design. The rules stipulate that designs must be made from reworked trash or other used materials that are beyond their intended purpose. The successful designs will be announced on the 7th
of February at 7pm via the Bank of Ireland’s Student Facebook page, and subsequently the students must choreograph a performance to showcase their outfit on the catwalk in one of five regional semi-finals in theatres across the country. The chosen model has 60 seconds to impress the judging panel on the catwalk and if successful he/she will be one of the twenty designs progressing to the glamorous grand final in May 2019 which will be held in the 3Arena, Dublin. And the coveted prize for the winning school is €2,500 in cash plus the Junk Kouture trophy; the winning team receives iPad Minis for each member of the team and their teacher along with €500 in cash. The five regional-winning teams and their teachers will win a trip to the Cannes Film Festival in May and two dresses/outfits and their models will be chosen to attend the Royal Film Premiere in London. With such coveted prizes, it’s small wonder that the standard was so high at Coláiste Bríde with 35 magnificent works of art on display involving 98 students and made from recycled bingo books, chicken wire, duct tape, guitar strings, polystyrene balls, old socks, net curtains, fake nails, shampoo bottles, loofahs, cable ties, old inhalers,

aluminium foil, old corsets, suncream bottles, sunglass lenses, wine corks, carpet samples, old coat hangers, plant filters, drinking straws, coffee pods, coffee filters, Barbie dolls, medical slings, kitchen tiles, pistachio shells, plastic spoons, paper plates, Lindor wrappers, leaves, milk filters, soccer and tennis balls, flower pots, fake flowers, ivy, Guinness can widgets, straw, matches, roofing materials, old wellies, hessian, wood chippings, sawdust, bark, bullet cas-
ings, exam papers, horse hair, bale netting, horse nails, rubber gloves, j-cloths, wooden pegs, hair extensions, old wigs, seaweed, sea shells and much, much more. The performances were exciting and expertly executed by the cool, confident and captivating models and the interval acts were professional and extremely entertaining from Wexford Academy of Dance, Scoil Rince Aisling, Colleen Coughlan’s magnificent rendition of The Greatest Showman
and last year’s Student Choice winner This Is Me modelled by Bonnie Kinnaird. Trust me this show rocks – a most uplifting and entertaining event and a huge dilemma for the judges – Ms. Michelle McEvoy, Caroline Oldrey and Kasia O’Leary, who after much deliberation declared Raising the Roof with Clodagh Roche, Gabriella Mazurczek and Katie Sherlock to be the winner along with Student Choice winner Deja Moo with Loren Doyle and Siobhan Sinnott.
So go online and get voting for these artistically gifted and creative lasses who have the ability and imagination to become designers of the future. By the way, for the first time ever Enniscorthy CBS entered a creation titled Colourful Minds modelled by Alan White with Dara Casey, Odhran Carley and under the guidance of teacher Rachel Condon – a sign of things to come – after all aren’t most of our fashion designers – men. – Maria Nolan

ARE YOU It's great to see a lot of the old parish halls getting new facelifts and renovations, giving them a new lease of life, which brings me to this month's feature in the Slaney News. Here in my own parish of Blackwater, we are very lucky to have been awarded a sizable grant to renovate the parish hall (originally, a school from 1860 to around 1930). Even though there has been no dancing there for as long as I can remember, back in the '50s and the '60s there were great nights of dancing to the sounds of Tom Sheil on the accordion, Paul Cullen on the fiddle, Paddy Mangan on the drums and Eddie Cullen on the guitar. Previous to this, dancing was done on a dance board at the top of the village on the Curracloe road. Somebody told me some years ago that they used to throw soapflakes on the floor to help the dancers glide around the floor with ease. The local ICA used to hold a big dance every year on St. Stephen's Day and this proved to be a very popular night indeed after the long spell of advent where dancing was not only frowned upon but outright banned by the church in that period.
DANCING?
DeClAN FlANAgAN is the South east’s leading dance teacher specialising in Irish Country Jiving & Ballroom, 1950s Rock ‘n’ Roll, line Dancing, etc. He is also well known as a music broadcaster on elite Country Radio 7.30am-9.00am Monday-Friday. He contributes a regular music and dance column to the Slaney News. Hopefully, after all the work is finished, the dances might start back up again. Here are the regular dance venues around the southeast. Please note Kiltealy have now moved their second dance from a Friday to a Saturday. And I was very sad to hear Ballykealy Manor have finished their regular Monday night dances. But, on the upside of that, there is a new weekly dance starting in the GAA Club in Tinryland on Monday 11th February. Fri 1st February; Askamore Community Hall & Camross Ballroom. Fri 8th February; IFA Centre Enniscorthy. Sat 9th February; Kiltealy Community Centre. Sun 10th February; Oylegate Community Centre & Rathanna Hall. Fri 15th February; Marshalstown Hall.
Sat 16th February; Drumphea Hall. Fri 22nd February; Kiltealy Community Centre. On the regular dance scene, The Talbot & The Oak Tree Foulksmills are on Sunday nights. Harney's Ballyedmond has weekly Sat/Sun/Mon dances. The Ashdown Park, Gorey & The Brandon House, New Ross are on Wednesday nights. Harney's Ballyedmond & Tinryland GAA Club Carlow are on Monday nights. The Woodford Dolmen & Murphy's Tinahely are on Thursday nights. The Ardattin Inn runs every Friday. The Parkview House Shillelagh & The Rhu Glenn are every Saturday night. (Give any of these venues a ring to see who's playing.)
On the big band scene, Cliona Hagan has now a new band and is back on the dance scene next month. She is too busy at the moment, as you probably know, with her involvement as a contestant on Dancing With The Stars. Declan Quinn & his band, who were formerly backing Cliona, are now backing Eamonn Jackson & The Jackson 5, and I am delighted to see him very much back in full swing on the dancing circuit. You can see him first hand in the Ardattin Inn on 6th April. Johnny Brady & His Band is down in The Rhu Glenn with my good friend Richie Halpin next Saturday 9th and that's also the night where the heats of the All Ireland Jive Championships will take place for the Southeast and I'll be down there to select suitable candidates to go forward to the final which will be held in March in The Shearwater Hotel, Ballinasloe. Well, that's all the news from me for the moment and I hope to see you all here, same time, same place, in the March edition of the Slaney News. – Declan

Two of Enniscorthy’s most dynamic and prolific actors have been chosen to take the lead roles in this month’s Irish premiere of A Steady Rain by Keith Huff which will run in the Jerome Hynes Theatre in the National Opera House, Wexford, from 13th to 16th February, directed by Eoghan Rua Finn and produced by Like A Fox Productions. Joey and Denny have been best friends since kindergarten, and after working together for several years as policemen in Chicago, they are practically family: Joey helps out with Denny's wife and kids; Denny keeps Joey away from the bottle. But when a domestic disturbance call takes a turn for the worse, their friendship is put on the line. The result is a harrowing journey into a moral gray area where trust and loyalty struggle for survival against a sobering backdrop of pimps, prostitutes, and criminal lowlifes. A Steady Rain explores the complexities of a lifelong bond tainted by domestic affairs, violence, and the rough streets of Chicago. RóNáN P. ByRNE A graduate of the University of Wales Aberystwyth, Rónán has been performing across a plethora of media for many years. Local lads on the world stage IN PRAISE OF LIBRARIES Sidecar Racing is one of the most spectacular forms of motorsport there is. The noise, the speed, the skill, the concentration of the driver coupled with the bravery and physical dexterity of the passenger, makes this what can only be described as “a sight to behold”. When you add the world renowned “Isle Of Man TT” to the equation you have something special indeed, that only very few are capable of doing. This year, Driver Mark Codd, a 32-year-old fireman f r o m E n n i s c o r t h y, a n d Passenger Liam Gordon, a 38-year-old mechanic from Wexford Town, will be pitting their skills against the very best the world of Sidecar Racing has to offer. Relative newcomers to the sport, they set the Irish Sidecar Racing scene on fire from the off, claiming a second place in the Irish championship in their maiden season and taking first in the cup championship in only their second year. In order to reach their full potential at the TT 2019, financial support is required to try and offset some of the large personal costs. A custom-build bike is currently being prepared as are race leathers and helmets, add to this tyres, fuel, travel and accommodation, any support would be greatly appreciated and in return for your sponsorship the sidecar and helmets will proudly display your logo/name, the team Facebook

an addition to any job or business e.g. honesty, loyalty, commitment, diligence, good communicator, punctual, reliable, conscientious, organised, efficient, positive, enjoy meeting new people, enjoy teamwork, can work on own initiative, etc, etc. Become aware of what you already have and don’t be afraid to sell yourself was the central theme of Alan’s talk and above all be clear, ‘Reflect on the role and the skills you have to fulfil it, give simple examples and tell them simply,’
he advised. Alan gave very clear guidelines for CV layout but said that there is no definitive format. ‘Try to create a document that creates a good first impression. After all’, he said, ‘it’s about how to make your CV stand out among 600 or 700 others.’ All very good directives and all very well presented by Alan Maher of Maher Consulting (www.maherconsulting.ie) and another thumbsup for Enniscorthy Library. – Maria Nolan

What a wonderful library system we have and what a remarkable service it provides to local communities the length and breadth of the country, at little or no cost to the individual I hasten to add. On 24th January I visited our local library here in Enniscorthy for a beneficial and informative talk on CV & Interview Preparation by Alan Maher of Maher Consulting. Alan, who is succinct, professional and easy to listen to, gave some very practical advice on how to lay out a CV and how to conduct oneself at a job interview. His sensible, overall message is to work with what you have rather than tell the interviewers what you think they want to hear. Be aware of yourself and your skills and abilities. ‘We all have competencies, explore and develop these and work them into your CV and Interview. Most people’, Alan went on, ‘when asked to list their skills and competencies and what they could bring to the position, get stuck at four.’ Whereas Alan said we should all be able to list 12 to 15 things that we have that would be

The Sheds selected for funding are: Bridgetown, Caim, Corach, Enniscorthy, Gorey, Kilmuckridge, Kilrane/Rosslare Harbour, New Ross, Our Lady’s Island, Ramsgrange, Rosslare, Shamrock, Taghmon and Wexford’s Working Men’s Sheds. “From Enniscorthy to Wexford, from Gorey to New
Ross, the sheds promote the health and wellbeing of members by combating issues such as loneliness and isolation, while creating a culture where men can discuss their thoughts and feelings without stigma,” Minister Kehoe said. “They are a great example of a positive community-based organisation that promotes good citizenship through good works.” n
As Secretary of the Wexford Literary Festival I am delighted to endorse the newly formed Underground Writers Society. The brainchild of three former members of our Festival Committee, Caroline Busher our Vice-Chair, Sheila Forsey our PRO and committee member Shane Dunphy, all are Irish Times Best Selling Authors. Three more creative and committed people it would be difficult to find. They have been tremendous assets to the Festival over the past couple of years and it is with a heavy heart that we say farewell, but it is uplifting and indeed gratifying to see them march onwards and upwards and we like to think that the wonderful success of the Wexford Literary Festival, now in its sixth year, has in some small way contributed to the tri-

Sad passing of Michael O’Leary Tourism boost for Co. Wexford Enniscorthy & District Chamber Vice-President, Michael J. O'Leary, passed away peacefully at his home in Blackwater on 27th January. It was with great sadness that Chamber President Maree Ly n g a n d t h e B o a rd o f Enniscorthy and District Chamber of Commerce learned of Michael’s demise. Chamber President, Maree Lyng, said, “The passing of our VicePresident, Michael O’ Leary, creates a great void in all our lives and in the lives of the many people he encounted during his all too short stay among us. “His contribution to both
the commercial and social life of Enniscorthy and his native Blackwater was immense and his untiring work for the betterment of society in general will be the legacy by which he will be best remembered. “To his wife, Mary, sons, Rodi, Jason and Declan, daughter, Lisa, brothers, Bobby and Eamonn, and other close family members, the sympathy of the entire Chamber family is extended.” Michael’s funeral took place in Blackwater on Wednesday 30th January after Requiem Mass in the local St. Bridget’s Church. n
TIME FOR WEXFORD’S YOUNG ENTREPRENEURS TO SHINE! €50,000 InVESTMEnT FUnD FOR yOUng EnTREPREnEURS COMPETITIOn “It could be yOU”, so says head of the Local Enterprise Office at Wexford County Council, Tom Banville, as he announced the launch of I r e l a n d ’s B e s t yo u n g Entrepreneur 2019 in Co. Wexford. Hosted by the Local Enterprise Offices (LEOs) around the country, the competition is staged in conjunction with the Dept. of Business, Enterprise and Innovation, Enterprise Ireland and the Local Authorities of Ireland. Now in its fifth year, the nationwide competition invites 18-35 year olds who have a business idea, a start-up or an already established business to enter. Tom continued “Applying is quick and simple. It takes about 15 minutes, is free of c h a rg e a n d i s d o n e o n www.IBYE.ie. Applicants are invited to participate in an Enterprise Day hosted by the Local Enterprise Office. From there, shortlisted applicants take part in Business Boot Camps before going forward to compete in the County Final, with an investment fund of €50,000 to share between the winners in Best Business Idea, Best Start-Up and Best
Established Business categories.” County Winners go on to compete at Regional Finals and, if successful, all the way to the National Finals. But Tom is quick to point out that it’s not all about the National Finals. “We know from speaking with past participants that the real value for them is in being part of the process. Taking part in I re l a n d ’ s B e s t Yo u n g Entrepreneur challenges young business people to stop and really focus on where their business is now and where they can take it. The business planning, mentoring, advice and support they receive during the process is really valu-
able. IBYE helps them to build a network of fellow entrepreneurs and they often become trusted friends and advisors to each other. Finally, IBYE is often their first experience of getting media exposure, which is really important in building profile.” I re l a n d ’ s B e s t Yo u n g Entrepreneurs is one of the headline events hosted by Wexford’s Local Enterprise Office (LEO) - the first port of call for anyone in business or thinking of starting a business. Closing date for Ireland’s Best Young Entrepreneur competition is Friday 15th March. But why wait? Apply today by visiting www.IBYE.ie n

VET DIARY FOR FEBRUARY
with the Moyne Veterinary Hospital Joe Kavanagh writes about Spring – a very busy time on the farm!
It's the beginning of February, the start of Spring and on the farm it's probably the busiest time of the year. Cows are calving, ewes are lambing and they bring their own challenges. Sleep deprivation being one for many farmers. Staying up night after night to ensure the calves and lambs are delivered safely and uneventfully. The next challenge is to get them sucking their mothers’ milk. It’s called Colostrum or colloquially known as "beastings". It’s extremely rich in nutrients but even more important it’s got very high levels of antibodies that will protect the newborn over the next few weeks of life. Nature has an ingenius method of allowing these micro-molecules be absorbed in the first 12 hours of life, the gut wall is much more permeable for this window of time. This short window is the lifeline for these young animals. If they receive this nutrient-laden beastings in the first 6-12 hours they have a great chance in life. If they don't then they often limp from one sickness to another and as often as not don't make it. It’s nature’s way.... As we become a more urbanised society we lose touch with this almost primal part of life. Mackin Travel, 18 Main Street, Enniscor thy, Co. Wexford and 100 Nor th Main Street, Wexford

These farmers work in all weathers, seven days a week, and although they like to grumble... often they've good reason to!!! So spare a thought for them when you're tucked up in bed with the wind howling outside. They're out there doing their stuff, tending to the mothers and offspring to make a living. They are a very resilient breed of people and despite Brexit, Weather and Markets, they bounce back time and again. Here's hoping for a soft Border for them!!! Timely reminders: Cats are long-day breeders and will start to become active from now on, so think of Neutering or Spaying them. n

Gems on our Doorstep - The Mansion House To commemorate the 100th Anniversary of the first Dáil on 21st January 1919, the Mansion House threw open its doors to the general public to mark the occasion on 18th/19th/20th January and Enniscorthy Historical Re-enactment Society (EHRS) availed of the opportunity to view this historic jewel in the heart of Dublin. The current Lord Mayor of Dublin Nial Ring was on hand at the magnificent residence to meet and greet and indeed interact and instruct all who visited on the eventful annals of one of Ireland’s most iconic buildings.
And may I say Lord Mayor Ring did a wonderful job posing for a multitude of photographs and distributing free commemorative pens, keyrings and pins to the steady stream of people attending over the three days. The Mansion House, built in 1710 by Joshua Dawson, is another gem on our doorstep with its beautiful Queen Anne facade and spacious, ornate rooms. It is the only mayoral residence in Ireland and is older than any surviving in Britain. I was intrigued to see a plaque in the grande Entrance
Hall to mark the contribution of the Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma who contributed generously, despite their own limited resources, to the Irish people during the Great Famine 1847. In the Lady Mayoress Parlour the mayoral symbols of Office, the Sword and the Mace, could be viewed whilst the magnificently-panelled Oak Room displays the Coat of Arms of every Lord Mayor from the Liberator Daniel O`Connell 1841 to the present day. Each Lord Mayor meets with the Chief Herald to discuss and agree a coat of arms to reflect his or her

family’s history and personal interests. Isn’t that a nice touch. The elegant Dining Room looks vaguely familiar as the one in Neil Jordan’s epic film Michael Collins and continues to be used extensively for formal dinners and important meetings. The famous Round Room, or the King’s Room as it was originally known, was constructed in six weeks for the visit of George IV in 1821 but its real claim to fame and the one that secures its place in history is that it was the location of the inaugural meeting of Dáil Éireann when members of the Sinn Fein Party elected in the General Election of 14th December 1918 met there and proclaimed themselves to be the legitimate Government of Ireland. Their mission on that fateful day was to place Ireland among the nations of the world, establish an Irish Republic and sever all ties with England. The Dáil Constitution and Declaration of Independence were read and Cathal Brugha stated, ‘Delegates, you understand from what is asserted in this Declaration that we are now done with England. Let the world know it and those who are
concerned bear it in mind.’ And of course as they say, ‘the rest is history’ – literally! Over the weekend the Round Room was off bounds as preparations were made for a State Event to officially mark the Anniversary – Dáil 100 which was being televised by RTE. The Mansion House, at the centre of our Capital for the past 300 years, has seen many historic figures walk its corridors of power and whisper conspiratorially along its passageways, and speak eloquently and passionately in its decorated rooms and hallowed halls, and a most sincere word of thanks to Lord
Maria Nolan with the Lord Mayor of Dublin, Nial Ring
Mayor Ring for allowing the general public and indeed myself and Enniscorthy Historical Reenactment Society to experience the delights of his residence and feel part of the formation of our State one hundred years ago. – Maria Nolan Maria Nolan with the symbols of Office – the Sword and the Mace.

Caroline gets motoring TOYOTA RAV4
Every month Bunclody native caroline Kidd brings you the best from the world of motoring, including car reviews, news and more. caroline is a member of the irish Motoring Writers’ Association (iMWA) and a jury member for irish car of The year. you can follow her blog changing lanes at www.changinglanes.ie.
REVIEW BY CAROLINE KIDD The new Toyota RAV4 is one of the most anticipated new cars of 2019. it’s just arrived in ireland and will be sold exclusively as a petrol electric, self-charging hybrid. i recently travelled with Toyota ireland to catalonia, Spain, for the official launch to test drive the new RAV4 on- and off-road. Now in its fifth generation, Toyota has reinvented the RAV4 upon the exciting new TNGA (Toyota New Global Architecture). The new Toyota RAV4 now has a more individualistic look and is altogether leaner and more angular than the model it replaces. In Ireland, 17” alloys and LED headlamps come as standard, while Sport models are available with a bi-tone paint option. Inside the new Toyota RAV4, there has been a focus on improving quality and design. The dashboard has
an attractive, clean horizontal design with soft touch materials and satin chrome features to add interest. Dials and switches are easy to operate, with a 7″ or 8” touchscreen in the centre of the dash. The RAV4 is a five seat SUV and the new platform means that there is now more interior space in the vehicle. The wheelbase has been increased by 30 mm and there’s about 40 mm extra width for rear seat passengers and more spacious rear footwells. The opening angle of the rear doors has also been improved to make it easier to access child seats and get in and out. Boot space is up 41 litres to 542 litres with a wide opening making it a practical space to work with. In Ireland the new RAV4 goes on sale exclusively with a new 2.5-litre self-charging

hybrid powertrain, though in some countries the SUV is also offered with a 2.0-litre petrol. There’s more power and greater efficiency, with front wheel drive models now having 218hp, and all wheel drive models putting out 222hp. The manufacturer quotes fuel consumption of 4.5l/100km while C02 emissions are rated at just 102g. The new RAV4 has a more rigid body and lower centre of gravity with every component now lighter and located lower down in the vehicle for improved comfort and driving dynamics. The response from the electric power steering has also been improved by moving the assist motor from the column to the rack. There’s a better driving position and on the road, the new Toyota RAV4 Hybrid immediately feels more fluid and engaging. The car handles confidently through corners with more
natural and progressive steering. Refinement in town is excellent, with the hybrid operating in near silence. During our test drive, the new RAV4 was comfortable and stable over a variety of road surfaces, though on the motorway we did notice some wind noise from around the mirrors. Toyota engineers have worked to reduce noise from the CVT automatic gearbox in this new generation of RAV4. However to this reviewer the noise from the CVT gearbox is still a bit of a bugbear, especially when you try to gather speed quickly. Fuel consumption averaged out at about 7.0l/100km during my test drive across town, motorway and country. We also had the opportunity to test the new Toyota RAV4 AWD model quite extensively off-road. It coped well with steep inclines and

declines and slippy, muddy conditions. Toyota Ireland is selling the new RAV4 in five grades: Aura, Luna, Sol, Sport and Platinum. Standard features on Aura models (from €35,900) will include 17” alloys, LED lights front and rear, dual exhaust tailpipes, black roof rails, electric parking brake, automatic lights, 7” multimedia system, dual zone climate control with rear vents, folding mirrors, driving mode selector and rear view camera. Toyota Safety Sense 2 is also standard, adding safety equipment such as automatic high beam, driver attention alert, eCall emergency call system, adaptive cruise control, pre-collision system with pedestrian and cyclist detection, road sign assist and lane trace assist. Luna is available from €37,590, Sol from €39,590, Sport from €40,990, and pric-
ing for the Platinum model is yet to be confirmed. Prices quoted here are for FWD models, with AWD pricing to be announced closer to the arrival of those cars to dealerships in April. The new Toyota RAV4 Hybrid arrives in Ireland at a time when car buyers are beginning to look beyond diesel, while Toyota Ireland continues to back hybrid across their range of passenger cars and SUVs. For this new generation, the Toyota RAV4 has been completely reimagined. This new RAV4 makes a much stronger statement, backed up by improved interior quality, the latest technology and safety features, an improved hybrid powertrain and a more enjoyable drive. The new RAV4 Hybrid does not come to market cheap, but is a much improved vehicle and an interesting step away from the classic diesel SUV. n

Funding for Local Groups... There was a welcome announcement in January by Michael Ring, Minister for Rural and Community Development, of €69,437 for 14 Wexford organisations under the Community Services Programme 2019 Support Fund. The fund focuses on service delivery to disadvantaged communities and target groups, helping to address disadvantage and long term unemployment. The Programme targets communities where public and private sector services are lacking, either through geographical or social isolation or because demand levels are not sufficient. In the Enniscorthy region the following three organisations received funding: Kilmuckridge Community and Family Resource Enterprise Company €1,650. Templeshannon Community and Childcare Centre Company €4,400. The National 1798 Historical Centre Company €3,300. __________________________________________________ €266,000 funding has been awarded to Wexford communities by the Local Community Development Committee under the LEADER Programme 2014-2020. Approved projects support the development of local arts and culture activities and facilities for young people.

Sinn Féin MEP Liadh Ní Riada has called for major tax reform to bridge the expanding global wealth gap. The Ireland South MEP was speaking following the release of Oxfam's “Public Good or Private Wealth?” report, which showed the top 26 richest people on earth own as much wealth as the bottom 3.8 billion. “The figures for 2018 are truly sobering,” she said. “The wealth of the world's billionaires increased by $900 billion last year, that’s $2.5 billion a day, while the wealth of the world's poorest people fell by almost the same amount. “Put another way, the fortunes of billionaires increased by 12% a day in 2018, while the 3.8 billion poorest people on the planet saw their wealth decline by 11% a day. That is just short of half of all of humanity.
“I particularly commend Oxfam for clearly recognising that this is morally unacceptable and not shying away from strongly condemning this situation and making clear recommendations.
“This has been achieved in two ways, unprecedented tax avoidance and evasion, and decades of decreasing tax rates. Neo-liberal economic policies have been fueling inequality since the 80s. “I fully support Oxfam’s call to have wealth and capital taxed at fairer levels. This can only be achieved through international solidarity and cooperation in order to avoid a race to the bottom on tax rates for corporations and top earners. “We must also shut down tax havens and eliminate tax evasion by corporations and the super rich. “Only through radical reform of the global tax system can we hope to tackle spiraling inequality.” n
Award recipients include the Enniscorthy Street Rhythms Dance Festival who will use the funding to purchase a new custom-designed stage for use at their vibrant festival which takes place each June bank holiday weekend. “Our existing stage has been well utilised by Enniscorthy groups over the last ten years and so it is badly in need of replacing; this funding award has come at a great time. We are looking forward to getting our new stage and to another ten years of use at Enniscorthy’s range of brilliant community events and in particular at our own dance festival next June,” said a delighted Bernie Morrissey, Committee Treasurer, Enniscorthy Street Rhythms Dance Festival. The full list of recipients: – Ballycogely Players amateur Drama Group: €18,308.90 – Clongeen Community Development Group: €48,981.44 – Danescastle Music Group: €4,951.75 – Enniscorthy Street Rhythms Dance Festival: €18,562.50 – Gorey Art Collective: €4,539.56 – Irish Street Arts, Circus & Spectacle Network: €25,606.45 – Wexford Arts Centre: €9,850.00 – Wexford Male Voice Choir: €10,307.77 – Wexford Mental Health Association: €34,455.35 – Ferns Diocesan Youth Service: €26,033.65 – Kilanerin-Ballyfad Community Development Assoc: €12,302.52 – Rathangan GAA Club: €26,101.16 – Youth New Ross: €27,000.00 “The Local Community Development Committee is delighted to approve such a variety of important community projects and business developments. The 13 applications approved in December foster our county’s strong creative culture and prioritise the development of our young people; they are all very worthy investments,” said Cllr Kathleen Codd-Nolan, Chairperson, Wexford Local Community Development Committee (LCDC). n
“We are now at the point where 26 people own as much wealth as the bottom 3.8 billion. This is not sustainable and we should not tolerate it.
“Oxfam rightly calls for the end of the under-taxation of rich individuals and corporations. Only 4 percent of global tax revenue comes from taxing wealth.

your olD toys coulD be worth big MoNey! Have you ever wondered how much your old toys are worth? Well to some people they’re just put in the attic in boxes and left there out of the way and forgotten about. Like a lot of other people I was sorry I gave away my childhood toys which I parted with as I got older and passed them on to my younger cousins – a very sad day indeed as I did not know the value of them nor did my mother who encouraged me to part with them. I remember her saying to me – what are you keeping them for? I tried to tell her and my father also but they were

Collectors are paying up to €3,000 for vehicles and ‘vam’ Action Man, that’s ‘vintage action man’. The other valuable ones are Barbie 1966 which in her box

fetched €500,000 at Christies auction house recently. When Action Man came out in Ireland it was at the height of the Troubles so they did not know if this toy would sell well in Ireland but it did. There are not many people collecting these military men in Ireland. So people, if you have any old jeeps or Action Men in your closet or loft don’t chuck them in the bin or send them to a charity shop, you could have a goldmine in your attic – tonka trucks, hornby trainsets, 1970s star wars toys, tiny tears cabbage dolls, old

teddy bears – the brown jointed ones. These are all worth a fortune. Action Man and GI Joe were introduced in 1964, and in 1966 Palitoy brought out Action Man in England – he replaced GI Joe as a boy’s doll. Oh, if you have a modern Action Man you can throw him in the bin – he’s worthless! In part two next month I’ll be looking at the Star Wars toys (although God knows where I’m going to find some to photograph!), Tonka Trucks, Hornby Trainsets, as well as Teddybears. – Joseph Doyle
Modern-day Action Man. If you have one of these in your attic leave him there as he's not worth anything much.
Vintage Action Girl is worth €600 to €700 if in her original box. She was made by Palitoy in 1971 but did not sell after that so was decommissioned in 1977.

A busy time in Bellefield GAA January proved to be a very busy time at Bellefield GAA – home of the Rapparees/ Starlights with Walsh cup semi final and final played at the popular Enniscorthy venue. A large crowd turned out to see Wexford take on and beat Kilkenny 16 points to 13 on Sunday 13th securing their place in the Final the following Saturday 19th against Galway. The only other Walsh Cup Final played at Bellefield was in 1954 when Wexford beat Dublin to take the title, that, and the fact that `Joe was coming to Bellefield` drew another very large crowd to the fixture. Unfortunately, Wexford were unable to replicate the 1954 win going down to Galway 1.23 to 20 points. However, they never allowed Galway to get out of sight and had two goal chances saved in the second half along with a penalty
shot that went over the bar – if any of these attempts had found the back of the net things could have ended a little differently. Referee Sean Cleere was a little bit over anxious with red cards handing out 3 of them (2 to Galway and 1 to Wexford) in a game that was in no way nasty or malicious. But in truth, Galway were the better team throughout with the legend Joe Canning receiving a well deserved Man of the Match Award finishing on a personal tally of 13 points and delighting many who had come to witness the man and his skills up close and personal. The pitch at Bellefield for both games was in excellent condition and a credit to field management at the club, the Bellefield atmosphere is unique and always elating and the hurling, if a little sluggish, was highly competitive and enjoy-
able – sure what more could you ask in mid January. RAPPAREES/STARliGHTS lADiES AGM: On Friday evening 18th January the Ladies Section Camogie and Ladies Football held a very enthusiastic and successful AGM with a committee of 15 being returned for the 2019 season as follows: Chairman Camogie & Ladies Football Ronie Furlong, Camogie Secretary - Sandra Matthews Doyle, Secretary Ladies Football - Seamus Doyle, PRO - Maria Nolan, Children’s Officer Stephanie McKenna; Shane Murphy, Willie Nolan, Sarah Siggins, Danielle Murphy, Rebecca Meaney, Martin Farrell, Aoife McCrea, Mick Kelly, Aisling Carley and Leo O’Connor. At the 2018 Wexford Literary Festival I met the warm, bubbly, vivacious UK author Adele Parks and immediately promised myself that I would read her latest novel, I Invited Her In. I have to admit that I wasn’t familiar with Adele’s work even though she has published 17 novels in as many years selling 3 million copies of her books which all hit the UK Best Seller lists and have been translated into 26 different languages. Adele describes herself as ‘a talking head, chatty and opinionated’ and gave a most informative and entertaining workshop at the Festival and I couldn’t wait to read her latest novel and suffice it to say I wasn’t disappointed.

last month i was out and about at the opening of an Exhibition of work by a young, local artist Emma Howe. The exhibition yellowcake279 is Emma’s first solo venture and she is thrilled to exhibit in the aesthetically beautiful and prominent Presentation Centre, Enniscorthy. Emma’s work is striking and different, her pieces are based on various spaces that
she encounters and engages with in her everyday life. Visual Art Manager at The Presentation Centre, Lisa Byrne, said how important it is to give young, talented artists like Emma a platform where their work can be viewed and appreciated by a wide audience. ‘Emma’s work is contemporary and unique and deserves to be seen and admired,’ Lisa said. The exhibition is called yellowcake279 and comes from

A novel concept indeed and well done to Emma who has created visually striking pieces of art that address and challenge the way we preset ourselves and our experiences through social media. I Invited Her In – is probably a woman’s worst nightmare – a longlost friend suddenly appears from your past in need of comfort, support and friendship as her childless marriage of 17 years is shattered and broken by the infidelity of her celebrity husband. As a happily-married woman in a secure relationship with 3 beautiful children, you of course feel compassion for a sister who, through no fault of her own, has been left with nothing, but even more than that is the overwhelming feeling that you owe her and the very least you can do is give her succour and shelter and time to lick her wounds and sort her life out. Bad idea – especially when the friend looks as though she has stepped from the glossy pages of Cosmopolitan or Vogue and you look more like someone herding cows in the Farmers Journal or sharing a recipe for hotpot in Country Living, and it becomes an even worse idea if you have a virile son of 17 and a charming, helpful, handsome partner. I Invited Her In is a most excellent read with a well thought out and developed plot and a plethora of intriguing twists and turns as one woman, Abi, is determined to get what she wants regardless of the consequences to others and Mel, the other woman, is equally determined to hold on to and protect what is hers. An absorbing twisted tale of revenge and jealousy expertly told, I particularly like the way Adele tells it from a variety of viewpoints giving the reader a much greater insight into each of her characters. Need a little something to add spice and fascination to the New Year then look no further than I Invited Her In by Adele Parks. n Adele Parks signing books at the 2018 Wexford Literary Festival. Delegation seeks Brussels support for Rosslare Europort Cathaoirleach of Wexford County Council, Councillor Keith Doyle was in Brussels on 1st February for a meeting with EU Transport Commissioner Violeta Bulc and EU Agriculture Commissioner Phil Hogan to raise concerns about the impact of Brexit on connectivity and to discuss investment and development in Rosslare Europort. The Cathaoirleach was accompanied by Minister Paul Kehoe TD who arranged the delegation, together with senior officials of Wexford County Council, Rosslare Europort, Irish Rail and Perennial Freight. Speaking after the meeting, Councillor Doyle highlighted the importance of Rosslare Europort as a key component in Wexford’s economic and transport infrastructure and he emphasised the necessity to support and further develop the port during this time of huge uncertainty. “A successful and vibrant Rosslare Europort will always be central to Wexford’s economic prosperity” said Councillor Doyle. “As Ireland’s closest transport link to the UK and Europe, the importance of Rosslare Europort cannot be over-emphasised, not just in a Wexford context but in the context of the entire island of Ireland.”

SEA FEVER Inside Kilmore Quay’s Fishing Community By Jackie Hayden
Over the last number of months, the management team at Hook lighthouse have been working hard behind the scenes to attract new large groups of international visitors to the attraction and they have now received bookings from one of the most successful Chinese Tour Operators, Rachel Sunshine. The visit by a group from Beijing No.35 Middle School of 36 students and 5 leaders was a huge success. The group enjoyed lunch with a guided Tour of the Medieval Tower and games on the lawn and the group's feedback was that it was the highlight of their trip with a special mention for the Hook Seafood Chowder! The Write By The Sea Literary Festival in Kilmore Quay has published its first book under its own imprint. The book is called Sea Fever – Inside Kilmore Quay’s Fishing Community, and its official launch took place at the Stella Maris Centre in Kilmore Quay, Co. Wexford, on Friday, January 25th. The official launch was performed by John Hickey, Regional Fisheries Development Officer with BIM. The evening included a generous selection of live song performances by noted South East musicians Liam Merriman and Bill Stuart as a taster for their own gig at the Stella Maris Centre on Friday February 22nd. Ballycogley singer-songwriter Ian Barry also performed his new song ‘The Remembering Garden’ that was inspired by the book.

Sea Fever – Inside Kilmore Quay’s Fishing Community is based primarily on interviews the author Jackie Hayden conducted with a variety of members of the local fishing industry. As Lucy Moore, chair of the Write By The Sea Literary Festival, explains, “Through their own words, memories and stories, Sea Fever attempts to engage with contrasting images of the sea as a place of adventure, wonder and romance, while also being a harsh environment from which brave people have traditionally made their livelihood and, sadly, lost their lives too. I believe Sea Fever captures those contrasts most vividly.” Sea Fever also includes a tasty selection of fish dishes, wonderful photographs of the locality by Nicola Reddy, a reflective sea-poem by Joe Neal and the lyrics of ‘The Village of Sweet Kilmore Quay’ by Mick Flynn. The book was sponsored by BIM, FLAG, the EU, and the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine, and sells at €10, with all profits going to the RNLI. n
