comment ENNISCORTHY MUNICIPAL DISTRICT AMENITY, ARTS AND RESIDENTS GRANTS AWARDS There was a packed Athenaeum Hall on Monday 15th April as a large number of volunteers with local community groups throughout the Enniscorthy Municipal District (EMD) attended the Amenity, Arts and Residents Grants 2019 awards night. A total grant allocation of €50,000 was handed over by the various Enniscorthy District elected Councillors to 130 Community, Voluntary and Residents Groups, under this year’s funding. The grant scheme, however, is more than just providing funding, it provides an opportunity to publicly recognise the voluntary contribution of groups from all walks of life including youth, heritage, community, arts, enterprise and sport, to name but a few. The diverse range of active groups illustrates the vibrant community spirit that exists within the Enniscorthy region. Cllr. Willie Kavanagh, Chairman of Enniscorthy Municipal District, stated that, “Volunteering is a powerful force for change, both for those who volunteer and for the wider community. We cannot put a price on human endeavour and the contribution that people are making all across the Enniscorthy Municipal District.” The Chairman thanked all present on the night for their hard work and their successful community initiatives which foster a strong sense of community pride. Well done to District Manager, Ms Liz Hore, and her team including Bernie Quigley, Margaret Kelly, Rory O’Connor and Moira O’Gorman for organising such an enjoyable night. It’s great to see community spirit and volunteerism still very much alive in the Enniscorthy region and nice to see it rewarded at this joyful, annual event.

Local Elections By the time you read this you will probably have been canvassed by some of the candidates seeking election to Wexford Co. Council. The electoral districts have been reconfigured since the last locals in 2014 with the old Enniscorthy District being carved into two parts. One of these parts is now known as Kilmuckridge and for some inexplicable reason has been pushed into the Gorey Municipal District Area rather than its natural base of Enniscorthy. In the Enniscorthy District there are six seats up for grabs. There are, at the time of going to press, twelve candidates seeking election. As nominations don’t close until May 4th this figure may change but because of publishing deadlines we can only work on what we know as of now. The candidates are: Independents – John O’Rourke (outgoing councillor), Jackser Owens and John “Texas” Byrne. Fine

www.slaneynews.com Gael – Kathleen Codd Nolan and Paddy Kavanagh (both outgoing councillors) and Cathal Byrne. Fianna Fail – Keith Doyle and Barbara-Anne Murphy (both outgoing councillors) and Aidan Browne. Renua has Gerald O’Donoghue, and Annette Byrne Moran represents Independents for Change which is a political party (registered in 2014) which is why she is not listed with the Independents. Looking at the position in a cold analytic manner it appears that the biggest struggle will be within political parties particularly Fianna Fail. The question will be as to whether Keith Doyle can survive the attack from Aidan Browne. It is clear to anyone observing the scene that Fianna Fail will not take any more than two seats out of six. One wonders then at the wisdom, if you can call it that, of putting Aidan Browne forward when it is obvious that if he takes a seat Keith will be the

CLLR KATHLEEN CODD-NOLAN ✔ Experience. ✔ Proven Track Record. ✔ A vision for the future. Enniscorthy Municipal District
Please continue your preference for Cathal Byrne and Cllr Paddy Kavanagh
View from the Hill
A local contributor looks at life today in Enniscorthy and beyond loser. Barbara-Anne Murphy should be returned without too much difficulty. The people of the Bunclody area will
not want to be without a councillor, regardless of what party the local candidate represents. On the Fine Gael side, again two seats beckon, Kathleen Codd-Nolan should be the cert here. She has been a sound, as we would say, and reliable public representative for a large chunk of the Enniscorthy District for a long number of years now. Her courtesy to all comers, regardless of political colour, is well known and she will probably be rewarded for that. Paddy Kavanagh has a more difficult task. He lost a large proportion of his support base when the Kilmuckridge area was hived off to Gorey. Nonetheless, he is well known as a hardworking, honest councillor, has a high name recognition factor and has a reputation for not being a politically correct wimp (of which we have too many) and should make it home. However, Cathal Byrne, a young first-time candidate is
not to be disregarded. He could pull a significant number of young votes from within Fine Gael but also from outside the Fine Gael family. A lot of people are commenting on the age profile of many of the contenders (ageism, I know). A surge of younger voters to Byrne and a strong town campaign by Independent Jackser Owens could cause difficulty for Paddy. It would be a political earthquake if Johnny Mythen was not returned for Sinn Fein. Even in the days when Sinn Fein were at the bottom of the barrel, Enniscorthy always returned a Sinn Fein or almost Sinn Fein member. The Independents will be interesting. John O’Rourke will be fighting to retain his seat in the face of fierce competition from Jackser Owens. Both will be strong vote-pullers in town, and as mentioned earlier could actually affect one of the major parties, more likely Fine Gael, by taking a seat each. It’s somewhat
unlikely that both will be elected, although not by any means impossible. It is difficult to see how Gerald O’Donoghue, Annette Byrne Moran or John “Texas” Byrne have any real chance of election. However, their transfers could easily affect the outcome in a tight race for seats in a district like this. So, will I be brave enough to call it? I’ll try it, although writing almost one month out from an election is probably foolhardy, so many things can happen in that time, such as a bad media interview, something at national level or a gaffe by one of the candidates, but here goes. In no particular order as they say: Barbara-Anne Murphy – Kathleen Codd-Nolan – Johnny Mythen – Aidan Browne – John O’Rourke – Paddy Kavanagh. In memory of Bernard Dunne on Easter Monday, 22nd April, the Fairgreen, Bellefield, Enniscorthy, became the home of the new Memorial Bench in memory of the late Bernard Dunne, well known locally and nationally as a boxer, coach and referee, and an employee of Wexford County Council for 48 years. Cllr Willie Kavanagh, Chairman of Enniscorthy Municipal District, spoke of Bernard’s many achievements in boxing and his leadership and mentoring of the young people that came to the boxing club in Enniscorthy. “He instilled in them a belief in their own ability and through the discipline of training and hard work that they could reach their true potential,” said Cllr Kavanagh. Jim Sullivan, Chairman of the ExBoxers Association, and Bernard’s daughter, Bernie Irvine, both spoke fondly of Bernard and the many happy times enjoyed together. TOWN TALK
WITH CLLR KEITH DOYLE MEMBER OF ENNISCORTHY MUNICIPAL DISTRICT COUNCIL AND CHAIRMAN OF WEXFORD COUNTY COUNCIL
1 May 2019
www.slaneynews.com
CAN WE HIT THE JACKPOT WITH THE NEW BY-PASS? As Chairman of Wexford County Council and a longstanding member of Enniscorthy Municipal District Council (formerly Enniscorthy Town Council) I am fortunate to be in a position to drive a lot of positive changes coming down the tracks for Enniscorthy. I am delighted to have the opportunity afforded by this monthly column to share with you some information about these developments. In the last few issues I covered the work being done as regards industry, jobs, recreational facilities, housing, etc and this month I want to focus on the potential benefit for the
town from the new Enniscorthy by-pass which will open in the third quarter of this year. The big question I am often asked is will it help our town? Obviously it will mark a time of great change and with change comes uncertainty but in the right hands it can also offer great opportunity. I have spent the last few years putting in place what I feel is essential preparation work for this major event. The 18 highquality office opportunities in the renovated Courthouse and the fast-tracking of the new Techology Park, and its first two buildings, through the planning process sends out a clear signal that Enniscorthy is ready to embrace the
employment opportunitiues that will be afforded by the new bypass. We are sending a powerfull message to the wider world that we are ready and capable of turning this event to our advantage and drive Enniscorthy forward to where it should be – the centre and the backbone of this county. As part of this process I have had dozens of briefings with ambassadors from many countries, top-level meetings with national and international business leaders, successful negotiations with Georgia Southern University, Savannah, etc at which I have outlined these projects and where they might fit into their plans going forward.
I have found that Enniscorthy always receives a favourable hearing because it has a great story to tell. I talk to these key decision-makers about the bypass which will make the journey to Dublin much shorter and allow us compete with other counties such as Meath and Kildare as regards ease of access to Dublin. I talk also about our proximity to Rosslare Europort (and have been to the forefront fighting for its future including leading a recent delegation to Brussels). Our advantages as regards access combined with our more affordable housing, lower cost of living, easy availability of top quality schools, etc means we are now in a strong com-
petitive position. Added to this already powerful mix is something we often take for granted – our ‘quality of life’ – our beautiful, historic town with its unique charm and friendly people, our recreational amenities for all sports, our new Orchard Peace Park (opening on 20th May), and Enniscorthy Sports Hub with its international standard running track, our walking trails, nearby beaches, etc. We can now successfully sell this town as a great destination to invest in and we can certainly aim high for three very good reasons – because we should, because we must and because we can! n

In glorious April sunshine the faithful gathered once again on Easter Monday morn to remember those who went before and made us who we are today here in Enniscorthy daubed with the essence of rebellion and cast in the shadow of Vinegar Hill. Beginning with Mass at St. Aidan’s, parading to Market Square where the Proclamation was read by Judy Heffernan, a wreath laid by Chairman of Enniscorthy Municipal District Willie Kavanagh, the Last Post sounded by bugler Stephen Nolan, Amhrán na bhFiann played by the Ballindaggin Pipe Band and a Minute’s Silence called by M.C. and District Manager, Liz Hore, for those who made the sacrifices to allow us to live in the freedom we enjoy today. On to Abbey Square where a wreath was laid at the Patriot Flag by Minister Paul Kehoe before returning to Market Square for a battle re-enactment by Enniscorthy Historical Re-enactment Society, Lord Edward’s Own from Monasterevin, Prosperous Heritage Group and Kilkenny Re-enactors. Volleys of shot rang out over Market Square as rebels staged an attack on an RIC barracks, a Gatlin gun rattled from a window in the town hall as insurgents ran to take cover or drop around the Square, and distraught women rushed to help the injured or say an Act of Contrition into the ears of the dead or dying. The noise, the outfits, the weapons and the narration by Graham Cadogan brought history to life for the gathered spectators giving them a visual of what life might have been like in the Ireland of the time making Easter Monday at Enniscorthy both a remembrance and an entertaining glimpse of our past. — Maria Nolan

Enniscorthy’s Syrian Community welcomed at Enniscorthy Rugby Club recently, I had the pleasure of meeting some of Enniscorthy’s 60-strong Syrian Community thanks to Paul McCrea, Enniscorthy rugby Club, and Doras, the refugee resettlement Agency. The brainchild of Paul McCrea, who believes sport to be the great equaliser and the best way of getting to know people and making lifelong friends, the evening hosted by Enniscorthy Rugby Club brought many of the town’s sporting bodies together – Soccer, GAA, Rugby, Basketball, Tennis and Hockey with members of the Syrian community now living in Enniscorthy. The purpose of the exercise,
so to speak, was to introduce the Syrian families to all the sporting organisations in the town and give the individual clubs the opportunity to introduce and sell their respective sport to this new body of people who have made Enniscorthy their home. Sport, traditionally, has been a great way of integrating peoples and it is only fitting that we should open our doors to these ethnic groups who might well be part of the future structure of our sporting town. Doras facilitators, Mercedes Moussa and Kamal Triubak, were on hand to provide assistance and act as interpreters but
indeed there was little or no need as many of the Syrian children who are attending St. Aidan’s National School have perfect English and are already playing many sports at the school. Kamal and Mercedes were delighted with the event saying that sport has such an important role to play in integration, advocacy and community-building and praised Paul McCrea and the rugby club for the excellent initiative. I had such an enjoyable evening chatting to both children and parents and even managed to secure three potential camogie players for the Rapparees!
It was also interesting to get some feedback from these new Enniscorthy residents who tell me that they like living here and find Enniscorthy people very helpful and friendly and isn`t that a nice endorsement of our town and community. With 45 different nationalities attending St. Aidan’s, perhaps it’s time more of our sporting bodies took the lead from the Rugby Club and followed suit inviting our Syrian friends and other cultural groups to our premises to show them who we are and possibly find out more about them. An exercise that can only be good for everyone. – Maria Nolan
After a number of unfortunate hiccups over the last couple of years, the Orchard Peace Park in Enniscorthy will now officially open on 20th May at 11.30am to be precise! The Park is an extension to the grounds at The Presentation Centre leading down to another entrance on Irish Street so people will be able to stroll down to town through this new, beautiful park. This will be a tranquil space containing many mature trees but still child-friendly with a maze for their amusement. For the adults, there will be quiet sections and walks, and new flora and fauna to enjoy. 200 native Irish plant species will encourage the bee population and resulting pollenation which is essential to achieve the town’s biodiversity aims. The Park also gives The Presentation Centre an open platform for outdoor summer performances. And being located beside St Aidan’s School it will provide a wonderful opportunity for children to improve their awareness of nature and the world we live in. The Park will be locked and secured at night but open to the public daily. The theme is one of Peace with a memorial to the fallen of both the U.N. and An Garda Síochána, and a plaque to the fallen of WWII will be placed here also. n
THERE’S NO SUBSTITUTE FOR EXPERIENCE! PRIORITIES: I will ensure the completion of Enniscorthy Technology Park and the filling of all units. I will work to make Enniscorthy Athletic Track an international arena by completing phases 2 & 3. I will ensure the completed Enniscorthy Courthouse Office Development will secure tenants offering high quality employment. I will be at the forefront in planning the proposed Multi-million Tourism Project for Enniscorthy town centre to make Enniscorthy a major tourism destination in the South East. I will continue to work with Georgia Southern University USA and with Rosslare Europort to generate additional major investment in Co. Wexford. I will continue to prioritise Social Issues such as housing and work for the improvement of the Quality of Life in Enniscorthy.

Civil Defence in Wexford has never been so strong Civil Defence volunteers in Wexford undertook 108 operations last year, according to new figures supplied by Minister Paul Kehoe. In total, Civil Defence teams nationwide took part in 2,795 operations – a 2% increase on 2017 and an 8% increase on 2016. The operations included the transport of patients and medical supplies, missing person searches, supporting the emergency services and assisting with community events. And figures for Wexford show that 108 operations took place, which represents more than previous years. Commenting on the figures for Wexford, Minister Kehoe said, “Civil Defence is a wonderful organisation that is now over 65 years in existence,” he said. “I want to thank Civil Defence volunteers for their efforts in supporting the Principal Response agencies, and indeed, their communities. And I would encourage anybody who feels they can spare some time to get in touch with their local group.” The Government recently allocated an additional

District Manager and MC, Liz Hore, opened the event welcoming the many volunteers and community activists present, saying that without the wonderful work done by these amazing people ‘all our areas would be a little less

C o u n c i l l o r s Wi l l i e Kavanagh, Keith Doyle, Johnny Mythen, John O’ Rourke, Paddy Kavanagh, BarbaraAnne Murphy, Kathleen CoddNolan and Oliver Walsh handed over in the region of €60,000 to an eclectic mix of hard-working groups including Tidy Towns Committees, Choirs, Festivals, Bands, GAA Clubs, Swim Clubs, Fitness Clubs, Boxing Clubs, Heritage Groups, Dance Groups, Men’s Sheds, Women’s Groups, Active Retirement Groups, Community Centres,

CROWMAN. SATURDAY MAY 25TH AT 8PM. TICKETS €18/€16. Jon Kenny (D'Unbelievables) is coming to The Presentation Centre with the exciting new play Crowman. This play received standing ovations every night during its run in the Cork Midsummer Festival at The Granary Theatre. Now this unmissable production comes to Enniscorthy! Jon plays numerous characters but the focus is on Dan, a man in his 50's who is living alone. He is a loner and feels like an outsider looking in on the community, but he discovers during the course of play that he is not as much an outsider as he thinks. When he hears about the passing of a dear friend, he is forced to look back on his own troubled youth and face up to his demons. The play is at times poignant and tragic, but also has a warmth and humour as Jon slips seamlessly in and out of the many uproariously funny characters. The people he depicts are surreal and humorous but tinged with tragedy and Jon plays each with his amazing ability of character acting and unique humour. DANCING AT THE CHECKOUT IN RATHNURE!
The Presentation Centre in conjunction with Enniscorthy Drama Group rolled out the red carpet on Friday night last, 26th April, to receive local thespians and friends and family of the very talented director, actor and MC, Fintan Kelly, presenting his latest endeavour, Ignatius, a short film on domestic violence. Ignatius Doyle is a local politician who appears in the opening scene to be all things to all people. He is hard-working and efficient and above all an upstanding man of his word, a man who gets things done, a man who delivers. He is a man of the people, a `hail fellow well met` kinda guy that we see greeting friends out walking on Vinegar Hill of an evening, or calling out to a neighbour before entering his own home, or having a drink and sharing a joke with the guys in the local establishment, or attending his daughter ’s Christmas concert or looking after constituents at his weekly clinic. But once Ignatius Doyle closes his own front door behind him all of that changes for the worse. This extremely well-written and well-executed piece of work with its Jekyll & Hyde nuances was introduced to the Presentation audience by actress and director, the lovely Laura Way, who was lavish in her admiration for Fintan for hav-
ing the courage and the confidence to expand his horizons further by writing, directing and acting in his own film. Produced and filmed in a single day, this is an excellent piece of cinematography with full credit to Ger Walsh. Filmed on location in Enniscorthy, making it even more real for those of us living here, Ignatius takes us from gentle innocence to callous brutality and abject fear but more than that it forces us to take a look at our community and a society that permits and accepts this kind of totally unacceptable behaviour. Fintan is powerful, convincing and dominant as Ignatius, at once likeable and hateful. Gemma Delaney depicts the frightened and suffering wife without hardly uttering a word, her fearful expressions, cowering body language and quivering lower lip saying much more than words ever could, and Fintan’s angelic daughter Jennifer is the perfect picture of shattering innocence. With all supporting cast playing their parts to perfection, this is an emotive, sensitive, thought-provoking and controversial piece of film. Fintan Kelly has excelled himself once again and I would be greatly surprised if Ignatius doesn’t do him and Enniscorthy proud at several Film Festivals this year. — Maria Nolan

ARE YOU Welcome to the May edition of the Slaney News. No real changes to the regular dance venues, but I was talking to Pat Hayes who is running a dance in the Mountain View, Ballyhale, every Friday night and he tells me it is well worth a visit. Set in a marquee on the grounds of the golf course, Pat says the views are spectacular and the marquee itself is tailormade for dancing. Meanwhile, the very successful Oak Tree in Foulksmills celebrated their first anniversary with Tony, Theresa & the Stars. It was a great night I hear and as you can see by the photos George and Mary McGee have the venue looking spectacular. Ballykealy Manor in Ballon has changed hands recently and it's undergoing a facelift. I hear the new owners are thinking of having some of the big country bands there on a regular basis so we'll be keeping an eye on that to see how it pans out. Either way, we here at the Slaney News wish them the best in the future in what has to be one of the most picturesque house and gardens in the surrounding area. By the time the June edition of the Slaney News comes out (on 29th May) the Carlow Summerfest will be almost upon us, so have a look at the fantas-

Events are planned throughout the county to commemorate the 850th so keep your eyes peeled during our Festival weekends and you might just spot some chain-clad, sword-swinging, shield-bearing Knights or run into a Damsel in distress or indeed even receive an invitation to a wedding at the Castle!

GAA leading the healthy way The many changes in Irish society including Post Office closures, fewer Garda Stations, pressures on our health service and the many challenges that our children and young people meet on a daily basis have prompted the GAA to step into the breach and develop and promote their Health & Wellbeing Initiative for the maintenance of physical and mental stability among its members and the community in general. Last month the County Health & Wellbeing Committee – Chair Mary Doyle, Secretary Maria Nolan, Andrew Egan, Tom Boland, Jim McCarthy and Liz Gardiner organised an Information Event for clubs around the county to make them aware of the innovative project and update them on all that is happening here during Wexford Wellness Week and encourage them to appoint Healthy Club Officers in every club in the county. Miceal Martin – Wexford Vice-Chairman said, ‘Irish society is in a process of transformation and the onus appears to be on the GAA to look after our members as well as we can in an ever changing Ireland. And health, both physical and mental, is on everyone’s agenda, there is a huge interest around the county in Wellness Week’, he went on, ‘with a flood of phone calls and emails coming into the Wexford office enquiring about it’. Before introducing Leinster Health & Wellbeing Chairman, Brian Carberry, Mary Doyle thanked everyone for attend-

Julie and Ruth spearhead More a movement than national campaign a fundraiser A mother and daughter from Enniscorthy, both with cystic fibrosis (CF), a lifelong lung condition that causes sticky mucus to build up in the lungs and digestive system, recently spearheaded a national fundraising campaign to help fight the condition which affects around 1,400 people in Ireland. The campaign by Cystic Fibrosis Ireland (CFI) was launched last month amidst a s e a o f p u r p l e ro s e s a t Government Buildings in Dublin, where the Forster family together with Taoiseach Leo Varadkar and model and CFI ambassador, Rosanna Davison, urged the public to donate to the campaign based around 65 Roses Day, which gets its name from the way in which young children often pronounce the words “cystic fibrosis”. People can still donate to the campaign online at 65RosesDay.ie. CFI is aiming to raise €120,000 this year to provide a range of patient and family supports. Julie Forster, well known proprietor along with her husband Karl of both The Antique Tavern and Stamps Pub, and her five-year-old daughter, Ruth, both have the condition although Julie was unaware she had it until she was 42, a year after her daughter Ruth was diagnosed. Julie says, “Ruth’s lungs are very good, she’s only had one serious infection since she was diagnosed when she was four-months-old. To keep Ruth well we need to do certain things, such as keeping her away from anyone who is unwell, and regular handwashing and basic good hygiene around her at home and in school, her school are an excellent support to us, and that she accepts it as her norm. “Her older brother Tom, and sister Shauna, are fine so it was a shock when we found out she had the condition.”
Five-year-old Ruth Forster with Taoiseach Leo Varadkar
CFI chairperson, Patricia Duffy-Barber, who also has the condition, says, “The fundraising is hugely important in terms of research... There is medication that will treat basic defects in 90% of gene types but there is a small percentage who haven’t got that yet who are eagerly hoping science will catch up with the illness and will have something that will be potentially life changing for them... It’s early days with a lot
of the treatments but we know that in the US some people have found huge benefits.” Ireland has the highest incidence of this chronic inherited lung disease in the world and has some of the most severe types of the disease. The good news however is that average life expectancy is going up all the time thanks to the campaigning work of people like Julie Forster and her wonderful family. n

Kevin Ryan (Electric Ireland), Pauline Kinsella (Manager Pieta House Wexford), Maria Nolan (Enniscorthy Darkness Into Light), George Lawlor (Deputy Mayor of Wexford), Peter Hurley (Pieta House) and Tom Boland (Enniscorthy DIL).
More a Movement than a Fundraiser: That’s how Peter Hurley from Pieta House described Darkness Into Light speaking at the Regional Launch of this year’s emotive walk from darkness into the light of hope in aid of suicide and self-harm prevention. Hosted by the Wexford town committee at the Clayton Whites Hotel and MC’d by Chairman Liam McCabe, the 2019 event is taking place in four Wexford locations – Enniscorthy, Courtown, New R o s s a n d We x f o r d o n Saturday 11th May at 4.15am. Deputy Mayor of Wexford, George Lawlor, said that he was delighted and proud to be representing the people of Wexford and the local authority at that evening’s Launch because Darkness Into Light was a community event and ordinary people and volunteers had made it what it is today with over 200,000 people walking worldwide out of the night darkness into the dawn light.
Kevin Ryan, representing main sponsor Electric Ireland, assured everyone that they would do their part advertising all over the country in the next couple of weeks, along with their ads on RTE. He said today’s young people are thankfully growing up in a different Ireland and are not afraid to talk about how they are feeling. Peter Hurley in his address encouraged people to ask the questions, ‘How are you today?’ and ‘Are you feeling ok?’, saying that Pieta House have a good Board, a good CEO and fantastic staff but it is the volunteers that make it great and he thanked everyone for their time and effort including Wexford Marine Watch, Order of Malta, Civil Defence and Gardaí. Chairman, Liam McCabe, thanked everyone for coming especially Olympic winner Lisa Redmond and invited all to mingle over a cuppa. Maria Nolan, speaking on behalf of the Enniscorthy
DIL Committee, said that Enniscorthy had been the first location in the county to host a Darkness Into Light walk with Rapparees/ Starlights and Shamrocks GAA clubs coming together to organise the emotive event back in 2013 ‘and it has gone from strength to strength ever since’. Maria said that the GAA is a most wonderful partnership for DIL with clubs in every parish in the country complete with ready volunteers and stewards along with which clubs are now being encouraged to appoint Health & Wellbeing Officers to look at all aspects of the physical and mental health of their members. Darkness Into Light will begin at Bellefield GAA Complex on Saturday 11th May at 4.15am. Maria continued, ‘So come on out and join us as we walk out of the darkness into the light of hope in aid of suicide and self-harm prevention.’ n

The Dunne family team at Killowen Farm.
Enniscorthy food businesses, killowen Farm and O’Neills Dry Cure Bacon Co, have been included in the Irish Independent’s top 30 Best Irish Food Products. Renowned food writer Katy McGuinness shortlisted some of the exceptional products that are home-grown in Ireland and Wexford took home two listings which recognises the quality of the produce which is being produced in the county.
When discussing O’Neills Dry Cure Bacon, based on the Old Dublin Road, Enniscorthy, she commented, “We Irish love our pork products, and bacon is a subject on which people have strong opinions. But the thought of a bacon sandwich made with drycured bacon from O'Neill's in Enniscorthy is the one that sets more hearts pounding than any other.” There was high praise too for Killowen Farm based in
Courtnacuddy. She said, “This live yogurt is made from the milk of the Dunne family's own herd of cows, with real fruit and just a little sugar. No additives or preservatives are used. It is simple, and simply delicious.” Both O’Neills Dry Cure Bacon and Killowen Farm yogurts are members of the Wexford Food Family and can be found in local SuperValu stores and independent retailers. n

A couple of months ago I wrote about a greyhound bitch 'Lady', that had strayed into my place, coming on eight years ago. Last summer she developed a growth on her lower hind and we had tried various means to help get it to stop and regress but to no avail. Eventually last November I decided that I'd have to operate and went ahead with the surgery. It was tricky surgery because of its proximity to major tendons and blood vessels hence my reluctance to operate in the first place but the surgery went well and she recovered well from the operation. After Christmas I thought that her leg was getting a little bigger again and sure enough the growth was coming back... almost faster than before! She seemed in pretty good form otherwise, eating, drinking, coming for her usual walks, but I began to notice her getting lame and lying down a lot more. I was getting worried that I'd have to go operate again with the real possibility of it just coming back even quicker... I was racking my brain about what else to do and decided to go with a change in diet as part of the treatment... to a raw food diet to see would it make any difference. After a bit of trial and error, I'm happy to say that Lady has made huge strides (physically and metaphorically!!). The growth has steadily decreased over the last four weeks and whereas it’s not gone completely it has made great progress. I spoke with a raw-food-diet guru and he reckoned it took more than just the raw diet, and yes certainly we were supplementing her with various remedies, treatments and supplements and a good dollop of TLC! We're not out of the woods yet but she's showing good signs of improvement so far... I reckon in lots of illnesses its not a magic bullet but a combination of factors that can tilt the balance back in their favour... And a good measure of luck doesn't do any harm! It brought it home to me as a practitioner the worry pet owners go through when their ani-
mal is facing major challenges and the satisfaction of seeing progress with them too. Keep ye posted! Timely reminders: Cats are actively in season this time of year so a reminder to neuter and spay if possible. Flea and tick treatments from now on will be needed too for dogs and cats. n

The Normans are here!
Enniscorthy Historical Re-enactment Society as Norman Invaders.
In May 1169 the beach at Bannow, Co. Wexford, witnessed an event that would change the fabric of the history of Ireland forever. The Norman Invasion had begun and nothing on this island would ever be the same again. Recently, Enniscorthy Historical Re-enactment Society was invited to Bannow for a photoshoot to advertise the anniversary of the landing of the Normans 850 years ago this May. Norman 850, as it is being called, will be launched in Carrig on Bannow over the May Bank Holiday weekend with battle re-enactments, a living history tented village, historical lectures, a commemorative ceremony and concerts featuring local and French musicians will mark this singular most important and consequential event in Irish history.
Visitors can enjoy an entire Medieval Living History Tented Village with 14 different living history tents which will showcase life some 850 years ago, 15 living heritage craft displays will also be showcased along with a display of Norman cavalry warfare and fully-trained warriors will host battle re-enactments twice per day on Saturday and Sunday during the festival weekend. Warrior training will be on offer for younger visitors with a chance to enjoy archery and a free replica Norman coin will be offered to all children who take part. A civic ceremony will take place at Bannow Church on Saturday afternoon at 2 pm. There will be historical lectures in the marquee in the village. On Saturday, Turtle Bunbury will take to the stage and on Sunday, Emmet Stafford will be the guest speaker.
Both evenings will conclude with a musical concert marquee at Colfer’s pub. On Saturday the inaugural performance of a specially commissioned piece of music for the occasion by composer Greg French will be performed by local artists and guests and Normandy-based band Strand Hugg will headline the concert. Sunday evening’s concert will feature Strand Hugg along with well known local band Green Road. Further details on all of the events c a n b e f o u n d a t w w w. b a n now1169.com. Tickets for the Living History Village are €5 per adult U-18’s free; Concert tickets are €15 per person. Speaking of the festival weekend, one of the organisers, John Murphy, said, “Bannow is a hugely historical location in Irish history, it is pivotal to the ancient heritage of Ireland’s
Ancient East and we are looking forward to bringing this history to life over the May bank holiday weekend with professional, historical re-enactment groups who will create a fun and fully immersive medieval experience for festivalgoers.” The Bannow 1169 Norman Festival takes place as part of a yearlong programme of events in Wexford to mark the 850th anniversary of the arrival of the Normans to Ireland. Throughout the year, historical talks and demonstrations, music concerts, landing re-enactments, workshops, medieval games and a Viking Fire Festival with a Norman twist, are all set to take place in Bannow, New Ross, Wexford town, Ferns and Enniscorthy under the banner ‘The Normans Are Here.’ #Norman850 — Maria Nolan

KILTEALY TOWN & VILLAGE RENEWAL SCHEME...
At the opening of Kiltealy Community Park: Anthony and Caitlin Sheehan.
On Sunday 14th April the Official Opening by Minister Paul Kehoe of the Kiltealy Town & Village Renewal Scheme took place with Bishop Denis Brennan in attendance, and followed by light refreshments in Kilrealy Hall. €100,000 of funding was approved for Kiltealy under the Town and Village Renewal Scheme 2017 for a series of village enhancement works.
The Scheme is funded by the Department and administered by Wexford Co. Council. The elements of the successful Kiltealy Village Renewal Project were: • Kiltealy Walking Trails Hub: Assess a series of walking trails in the Blackstairs Mountains starting from Kiltealy, which are currently not well developed. The aim is to attract visitors to Kiltealy thereby
•
stimulating economic regeneration for local enterprise and a need for tourism accommodation. Two trails were assessed by Sport Ireland and then inspected and approved in July 2018. These are: Cullentra Walking Trail and Ballycrystal Trail. Community Centre Digital / Woodwork Hub: Install IT and woodwork equipment so that training can
•
be undertaken in IT programmes and computerised design leading to the production of bespoke woodwork crafts. This is to target the young and active retired in the village as an intergenerational project. Community Park: Develop a Community Park next to the community centre that is accessible to all, designed considering the needs of older persons.
•
Healthy Community: Build on the existing community gym and aiming to develop a wider community health model which encourages the participation of all age groups. • Enhancement Works: Encourage pride in place and 1798 connections by enhancement of the village memorial garden, creating new stone walls and vil-
lage planting and repairing gravity-fed fountain. • Cross Cutting Theme: Raise awareness of energy and environmental issues. Minister Kehoe is now calling for applications for the 2019 Town and Village Renewal Scheme. Funding of up to €200,000 is available for rural towns and villages across Wexford through the 2019 Town and Village Renewal Scheme. n

Caroline gets motoring SKODA FABIO MONTE CARLO
Bunclody native caroline Kidd brings us reviews of the latest new cars to arrive in ireland. caroline is the editor of changing lanes (www.changinglanes.ie), one of ireland’s leading motoring blogs, and a jury member for irish car of the year. She also provides freelance writing services to businesses in Wexford under the name of Star content (www.starcontent.ie).
REVIEW BY CAROLINE KIDD The Skoda fabia has gained popularity over the years because it packages the simple and straightforward ethos of the Skoda brand with good value pricing and a raft of engines derived from the Volkswagen Group. now Skoda has revisited the fabia in their line-up, and refreshed the model with a number of updates. The Fabia range is available in Ireland from €15,600 and features a new line-up of all petrol engines, including a 1.0 MPI unit offering 75hp and a 1.0 TSI unit with 95hp or 110hp. The 110hp engine is also available with the option of a DSG automatic transmission. Styling has been tweaked and the facelifted Fabia includes a redesigned radiator grille, alterations to the
front and rear bumpers and new headlights and tail lights with optional LED technology. But Fabia’s quirky, squared off profile remains. The Skoda Fabia Monte Carlo as tested (from €19,425) gives the Fabia a more individual look, with a black roof (optional) and door mirrors, 16” black alloys, tinted glass, black rear spoiler and black front grille surround. Inside, Skoda has refreshed the cabin of the Fabia with a newly designed instrument cluster and seat upholstery. The Skoda Fabia has a straightforward cabin that’s easy to find your way around. The cabin quality is good though there are some cheaper plastics used of course. The thing I did notice is that it’s starting to look a little dated in comparison to newer competi-

tion, but there is a 6.5” colour touchscreen infotainment unit standard from the middle of the range with Apple Car Play and Android Auto. I do like the sporty ambience of the Monte Carlo models with their special seat upholstery, a flat bottom sports leather steering wheel, chrome pedals and red stitching. There are four trim levels for Ireland: Active, Ambition, Monte Carlo and Style. Standard equipment includes 14” steel wheels, a Blues radio unit with AuxIn, USB port and SD slot, electric front windows, height adjustable driver’s seat, and electrically adjustable and heated exterior mirrors. The mid-level Ambition (from €16,725) adds 15” alloy wheels, a Swing 6.5” colour touchscreen infotainment
unit, Smartlink including Apple Car Play and Android Auto, leather multi-function steering wheel and front fog lights. T h e S t y l e t r i m ( f ro m €18,815) adds air conditioning, rear electric windows, front arm rest, keyless entry and keyless start, rear parking sensors, automatic headlights and a height adjustable passenger seat. The sporty Monte Carlo version is available from €19,425 with the equipment highlights listed above. The Fabia will seat four reasonably comfortably, five at a push. The two footwells in the rear do seem quite large for a supermini and headroom is good too because of that squared off roofline. The boot is also excellent for this class of vehicle at 330 litres.

The Fabia Combi is available for an extra €745 across the range and comes with even more boot volume. I was test driving the Skoda Fabia Monte Carlo with the 1.0-litre TSI turbo petrol engine with 110hp. The Fabia is fun to drive with light steering and an agile driving character. The engine provides peppy performance in the low gears, only feeling like it’s running out of puff in the top gears. The Fabia is comfortable on the move and stable on the motorway, with just a hint of road noise at high speeds. Over a week of driving my fuel consumption averaged at 6.3l/100km, while motor tax is just €190 per year. While this updated Skoda Fabia is not a new, new model – it’s merely a facelift with
some cosmetic changes - the Fabia is still a very enjoyable small car. It’s practical for its size and nice to drive. Though it’s starting to feel a little old inside, this is not a huge frustration since it’s still a nice cabin to spend time in. For me the Skoda Fabia Monte Carlo is the pick of the range, because it really makes a statement! Model tested: Skoda Fabia Monte Carlo 1.0 TSI. Price: €21,435 (range from €15,600). Engine: 1.0-litre turbo petrol. Power: 110 hp. Torque: 200 Nm. 0-100km/h: 9.6 seconds. Top speed: 195 km/h. Fuel economy: 4.6l/100km. Motor tax: €190 per year n

Wexford has worst CIVIC RECEPTION FOR JIM BOLGER primary and secondary roads in the country – Browne Left: At the Civic Reception for racehorse trainer Jim Bolger in Ferrycarrig on 2nd April were L-R: Cllr Ger Carthy, Johnny, Jim and Paddy Bolger, and Mayor Tony Dempsey. fianna fáil TD for Wexford, James Browne, says the latest report from the national Oversight & Audit commission reflects fine Gael’s utter neglect of roads funding in Wexford. The report reveals that Wexford has the worst local primary and local secondary roads in the country, and comes fourth in terms of the worst regional roads in Ireland. Deputy Browne said, “The findings of this report will come as no great surprise to anyone who has to drive around Wexford. There are dozens of roads across the county that are in a dangerous state but the government’s refusal to allocate the necessary funding means that they have been left in a state of disrepair. “Over the past number of years, the level of funding allocated for road maintenance has been running well below what’s needed and serious road safety issues have arisen as a result. Road surfaces are uneven, there are large potholes on several non-national roads and disappearing line markings are making driving conditions on our roads extremely dangerous. “This report is merely reflecting the situation on the ground.
James Browne T.D.
In 2016 and 2017 Ireland saw two particularly bad winters, and many of today’s problems stem from the fact that the snow and icy conditions experienced at that time left many parts of the roads network in disrepair and in need of essential upgrade work. These sub-standard road conditions are not only leading to treacherous driving conditions, they are causing serious damage to cars. “Despite flagging these issues time and time again, and emphasising the importance of maintenance and repair work, Minister Shane Ross has refused to allocate additional funding for this essential work. “Unless funding is approved, we will only see a continued deterioration in our roads. This will not only have an impact on local areas, but has serious implications for road safety as well”, concluded Deputy Browne. n

Highlighting a lifestyle issue
Renua candidate for the Enniscorthy district, Gerald O'Donoghue.
Renua local election candidate for the Enniscorthy district, Gerald O'Donoghue, has drawn attention to a common experience while on the campaign trail – the number of people still not home at 8pm in the evening. When he makes enquiries from neighbours as to why no one is at home the most common reply is 'they are working in Dublin and are not home yet'. Gerald believes this lifestyle has a detrimental
effect on family life and on the wider community. It is not a lifestyle that is sustainable. He say it underlines the need for more well-paid jobs in Co. Wexford such as IDA jobs. However, the IDA jobs will not come unless there is a university campus in the area that has courses in the science and engineering fields. Gerald is committed to bringing a university campus to the county and he has stated that Enniscorthy is the
natural home for the county campus. It would revitalise the county but Enniscorthy in particular. It would allow young people to remain at home and attend university. This would save money and in fact give families the opportunity to earn extra income by letting out spare rooms for digs. Local man Gerald is from Davidstown, is 41 years old and is a self-employed energy engineer. n

tv news... same olD story – DiFFerent stuDents yes folks, cobra Kai came back to our screens on 25th of April for a second season. This hardhitting series is based on the famous film, the Karate Kid. It’s been 34 years since Daniel LaRusso won back-toback all-valley karate tournaments in The Karate Kid and now 34 years on Daniel LaRusso is faced with his old high school nemesis, Johnny Lawrence. Johnny is down on his luck and is intent on reopening the old Cobra Kai karate dojo. Daniel is determined this is not going to happen, but it does, and Johnny finds himself teaching karate to a bunch of high-school social outcasts who take his aggressive philosophy too far. Daniel meanwhile is a successful car dealer who has been struggling to maintain balance in his life without the guidance of his deceased mentor, Mr. Miyagi. Johnny and Danny face each other again and old rivalries are reignited only this time they face each other through their students!

LaRusso (Ralph Macchio) is a father now with a son and daughter. He is also a father figure to his old enemy’s son, Robby, who sides with Daniel against his dad after Daniel hires him at his car dealership, not knowing that Johnny is his father. Daniel eventually proves a positive influence on the boy, teaching him Mr. Miyagi's philosophy of balance. Meanwhile Johnny becomes a father figure to his star pupil, Miguel Diaz, who is being bullied at school. It’s the same story only this time the students are the masters. Season 2 kicks off where season 1 left off so expect a showdown between Robbie and Miguel and Johnny and Daniel. This show deals with the modern day issue of cyber bullying and bullying where the victim becomes the victor. This hard hitting show is available on Youtube streaming. – Joseph Doyle

congratulations to Enniscorthy on winning the blue riband of the leinster club rugby season – the Provincial Towns cup final which took place in navan Rugby club on 28th April. Holders Enniscorthy made it nine wins over the 94 years of the Provincial Towns cup. The final was Enniscorthy's last game in a remarkable season in which they have lost only twice, once to Ashbourne in the All-Ireland Junior Cup final in January and earlier
in their Leinster League Division 1A game in September against Wicklow. Enniscorthy overcame that Wicklow loss to dominate the league, winning the title with three games to spare. And they followed up with three impressive wins in the All-Ireland League Round Robin to gain promotion to the AIL next season, and then success in the Provincial Towns Cup Final against Wicklow on 28th April. – Joseph Doyle

ENNISCORTHY RUGBY ON A HIGH
2018-2019 has been a remarkably successful year for Enniscorthy Rugby club with the icing on the cake being qualification for senior rugby (the All-ireland league) next season. That success was followed up by winning the Provincial Towns Cup final in Navan on 28th April narrowly defeating great rivals Wicklow on a scoreline of 10-9. Wicklow were the only team to have defeated Enniscorthy during the 2018/9 league, and they certainly made it difficult for Enniscorthy in the Towns Cup final starting with seven of the squad that won cup medals at Enniscorthy’s expense in the 2016 decider. The crucial scores for Enniscorthy came from a try from scrumhalf Arthur Dunne just before half-time and from number eight, Nick Doyle, who was called up to take a penalty
kick late in the second half in the absence of the injured outhalf, Ivan Poole. The outcome means that Enniscorthy have now won the prized ‘coffee pot’ for the ninth time since first capturing the cup in 1926. Team: R Dunne, I Jacob, K Lett, D Pim, D O’Dwyer, I Poole, A Dunne, A Todisco, D Murphy, P Waters, T Morrissey, T Ryan, A Jacob, B Bolger, N Doyle. Subs: H O’Neill for Poole, S Hadley for Morrissey, C Kavanagh for Todisco. The first team panel and coaches deserve great credit for their success this year while playing an entertaining brand of rugby making them one of the greatest teams to ever wear the Enniscorthy jersey. At underage level it has also been a wonderful season particularly at U-16 level where the girls team swept all before them in winning the Premier
League title and the boys have qualified for the Leinster Cup Final to be played in Donnybrook on 6th May having defeated Boyne in the semifinal on a scoreline of 33-22. On the sponsorship front the club would like to thank ESET for their support as main sponsor over the last three years. Next season, a main sponsor will be Mr. Padraic Donohoe through his companies Alcast Motor Factors and his new venture, Hill Autos. He has also agreed to become ground sponsor with immediate effect so the ground will now officially be known as Alcast Park. This generous sponsorship is much appreciated by the club. The club is also looking for additional minor sponsors and is also in process of launching a 300 members draw – contact Elaine Hickey or Andrew Owen for details of membership. n

Naoise wins major national art award naoise Hennessy, a 16-year-old student from craanford, near Gorey, has been chosen overall winner of this year's 65th Te x a c o c h i l d r e n ' s A r t competition, taking first prize in the senior 16-18 years age category. Her winning entry entitled ‘Lifelines’ – described by competition adjudicators as ‘a finely detailed study that so perfectly captures the features and character of the subject’ – is a portrait by Naoise of an elderly lady delicately repro-
duced using watercolour pencils throughout. Youngest of four children, Naoise is the daughter of Marie and Christy Hennessy and is well known to many in the county as an All-Ireland medal winner and goal-scoring forward on the Wexford Under16 camogie team. She is an active member of Kilrush Camogie club and has taken up boxing with the local Craanford Boxing Club. A pupil at Coláiste Bhríde in Carnew, Naoise attributes her
success to the support and guidance she receives from her art teacher, Mr. Eugene Lynch and the staff at her college. Her original introduction to art came from her national school teacher Ms. Catriona Flynn who continues to encourage her. Praising what he termed her ‘fine and detailed execution of what was an extremely challenging subject’, the Chairman of the judging panel, Gary Granville, Professor Emeritus of Education at the National
College of Art and Design, described Naoise’s winning entry as ‘a truly life-like and painstakingly executed work worthy of a place in any public gallery’. In winning the coveted first prize, Naoise fought off competition from thousands from across Ireland who took part in the competition. She will receive a first-prize cheque for €1,500 plus a visit to Tokyo in August at the invitation of the International Foundation for Arts and Culture. n
Brothers Divided i was privileged to be at Enniscorthy library recently for the launch of the amazing story of the Hay family of Ballinkeele House, Ballymurn. Brothers Divided by Billy Sweetman is an intriguing account of the sons of Harvey Hay – John who was executed in the aftermath of Vinegar Hill for his part in the Rebellion, James who died of a tropical disease serving with the Crown Forces in the Caribbean, Philip who inherited Ballinkeele and rose to prominence as Lieutenant General in the British Army and Edward, the eldest, a United Irishman sympathiser who was lucky to escape execution in 1798 and went on to campaign with Daniel O’Connell for Catholic Emancipation. Talk about a diverse household – Brothers Divided is a most excellent title for this unusual story of a man, Edward Hay, who is largely unknown and unacknowledged – according to Bernard Browne, former CEO of Comoradh 98 and the 1798 Centre, who was, he said, honoured and delighted to be asked to launch Billy’s book. Reading the book, Bernard said is a reminder of the need to record the lives of men like Hay, unsung heroes of Wexford and indeed Ireland. Billy’s account allows the reader to feel connected to the Hay family and to appreciate the stamina of Edward Hay as well as the social dynamics of the time.
“Billy has taken Edward Hay out of the shadows and into the light and I am happy to commend Brothers Divided to you all,” Bernard concluded. MC, Jarlath Glynn, introduced Billy Sweetman as a native of Glynn and an educator at Wexford CBS but it is only proper that the book be launched in Enniscorthy – Jarlath continued – Edward Hay’s home town. Author Billy Sweetman dedicated his work to his great friend, the late Fr. Lory Kehoe, and described in detail his huge admiration for Edward Hay not just for his participation in the 1798 Rising but for his publication in 1803 of A History of the Insurrection of the County of Wexford and his massive and extensive work for Catholic Emancipation as Secretary of the Catholic Association. Edward Hay died in penury in 1826 and is buried in St. James’ Churchyard, Kilmainham. During our commemorations of 1998,

750 memorials were erected in memory of those who played their part in our county’s unique history but little or nothing has ever been done for Edward Hay – Billy’s book will no doubt cre-
ate a greater awareness of him and who knows may even prompt a commemoration or a memorial to a man outstanding even in a time of outstanding men. — maria nolan

This month I decided to revisit a book I had read many, many moons ago – Edna O’Brien’s infamous debut novel – The Country Girls – published in 1960 and subsequently banned by the censor, and was actually burned by O`Brien’s parish priest. How archaic that all seems to us now living in a very different Ireland but many of you of a certain vintage, including myself, will remember exactly what it was like. I was prompted to re-read Country Girls as it is currently running on stage at the Abbey Theatre and I have to say I enjoyed it as much as I did the first time round when reading it as a country girl in Dublin in the late 70’s. Kate, the main character, is a bright, attractive, naturally inquisitive, intelligent girl who has just won a scholarship to one of the best schools in Ireland, however her life takes a turn for the worse when she arrives home to find that her mother has been drowned in a boating accident leaving Kate and her alcoholic father to fend for themselves. Kate’s father doesn’t show much interest in either her or her academic career as she heads off to a new life at the convent with her best friend, Bridget Brennan, known to all as Baba. Life at the convent is extremely strict as only those of us who remember the nuns can fully appreciate, but Kate does remarkably well at her studies until her supposedly ‘best friend’ lands both of them in serious trouble resulting in expulsion from the school and a very different life path for Kate. The Country Girls sent shock waves through 1960’s Ireland portraying young schoolgirls as having an intense interest in sex and actually contemplating physical liaisons with married men. This beautifully written novel tells much about its author’s struggle to break from the shackles of small-minded rural Ireland, suffocated by religious restrictions and riddled with all kinds of guilt. The only means of escape was to be what was described as a ‘bad girl’ and that brought its own shame and promise of eternal damnation. Edna O’Brien was the original ‘bad girl’ – a female James Joyce, or was she simply a woman ahead of her time – do read the novel and make up your own mind after all it is a wonderful window on the social history of the oppressive 1950’s Ireland. n

The sudden passing of Denis collins, beloved son of Maeve and the late Denis, brother of Pat, liam, Triona and the late Bridget, has been a source of great sadness for all who knew him. Denis was the former Artistic Director of Wexford Arts Centre, and well known as a gallery proprietor (in recent years he ran the Denis Collins Gallery at Rowe Street), poet, promoter of Wexford Literary Festival and champion of the arts generally. Denis loved Wexford and was a very committed community activist working tirelessly for various groups most notably Wexford Tidy Towns. Cllr George Lawlor said: “His self deprecating wit allied to his forensic thinking will be sorely missed by all who knew him in Wexford, the town he loved so well.” A colleague described him as “a beautiful lad with a heart of gold and the patience of a saint”. It was very fitting at his funeral that donations, if desired, were to be to Wexford Tidy Towns. May he rest in peace. n
