Chairperson of Enniscorthy Municipal District, Cllr Kathleen CoddNolan, assists Santa in switching on the town’s festive lighting. The switch-on of Enniscorthy’s festive lighting, by Santa Claus himself, took place on Saturday 23rd November with live broadcasting by South East Radio, a children’s arts & crafts workshop at The Athenaeum, free candy canes and bubble wands for children, followed by a parade of
Santa’s Enchanted Castle characters to the Market square led by Santa and Mrs Claus, in their colourful sleigh, to switch on the town’s Christmas Lights. As always there’s lots happening in Enniscorthy over the festive period. See our pages 6 and 24-27 for full details. n

As we go to press, there are only two days remaining to the Co. Wexford Bye-Election on 29th November. In the running are: Malcolm Byrne, Fianna Fáil, Verona Murphy, Fine Gael, Johnny Mythen, Sinn Féin, George Lawlor, Labour, Jim Codd, Aontú, Karin Dubsky, Green Party, Cinnamon Blackmore, Solidarity PBP, Melissa O’Neill, Irish Freedom Party, and Charlie Keddy, Independent. Our “View from the Hill” columnist takes an experienced look on page 6 at what is likely to be a very tight election. ––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––– Some of the highlights of Christmas in Enniscorthy this year include Santa’s Enchanted Castle in Enniscorthy town centre and Santa’s Winter Wonderland at Kilcannon Garden Centre, lots of craft fairs, seasonal concerts, pantomimes, a live crib in the IFA Centre 12-4pm on 15th December, a Gala Ball organised by Enniscorthy & District Chamber, lots of retail and services promotions organised by the Enniscorthy Business Association, and of course various religious ceremonies for this Christmas time of year. And, as always, a word of encouragement from us this Christmas to shop local as much as possible. Happy Christmas to all! – Frank Corcoran

View from the Hill
A local contributor looks at life today in Enniscorthy and beyond BYE-ELECTION By virtue of publication deadline, this column is being written a few days before polling in the Wexford bye-election.
27 November 2019 In my last column I predicted that the result of the election would be extremely close indeed with the advantage, for various reasons, being slightly on the side of Fine Gael’s Verona Murphy. That prediction went against the general trend as the majority of those in the know were, and still are, suggesting that Malcolm Byrne of Fianna Fáil should pull it off. Well, since then, many things have happened. Canvassers have been out and about, social media has been fired into action by all of the candidates and posters have appeared everywhere. Regardless of anything else one would have to be on a different planet not to know that an election of some sort was coming up. And I haven’t even mentioned Verona yet. Before this election Verona Murphy would have been recognisable by many as the very able spokesperson for the Irish Road Hauliers Association. Those outside of that industry wouldn’t really have any reason to connect with her. That has all changed in the last few weeks with Verona making a huge impression, locally and nationally,
with her views, since retracted and apologised for, on the question of illegal immigrants and asylum seekers to this country. There’s no need for me to rehash the comments or the near hysterical reaction to them from many others, a lot of them her political opponents. Whatever happened to Evelyn Beatrice Hall’s words in The Friends of Voltaire when she wrote, “I disapprove of what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it”? It seems now that unless the opinion expressed falls into a particular category the individual expressing it becomes a racist and a danger to society. The outcome of Friday’s election will indicate how many people share similar views, if not identical ones, which are really fears, on this overall question. And in fairness in many cases such fears are understandable. For instance, a point well made on social media regarding the 16 individuals discovered at Rosslare recently was, “That at least now these people are in the care of the State, guaranteed a roof over their heads, food, medical treatment and are being treated compassion-
E
Cllr Malcolm Byrne of Fianna Fáil
ately while our own street sleepers get none of this” (all that wasn’t enough for them apparently as some media reports say the majority of them disappeared after two nights). And that’s a genuine argument. The solution is to create a society where everyone will be treated equally but, regrettably, we will never see that in the lifetime of even the youngest reader of this column. Ironically it was Fine Gael, which Verona Murphy represents, and Labour from 2011 to 2016, who imposed five years of austerity on this country, followed since 2016 by Fine Gael and Independents
who while they have loosened the purse strings a little are still pursuing policies which adversely affect the weakest in society. I make this point because it is obvious that the majority of people in this country would willingly accept immigrants and asylum seekers if policies pursued by the government of the day ensured equal treatment for all and are seen to be so doing. Back to the Bye-Election then. Taking all the above into consideration, and disregarding what the removed-from-thepeople-on-the-ground national media are saying, I believe that the outcome is far from predictable. Malcolm Byrne of Fianna Fáil is the obvious favourite, but Verona Murphy has made such an impression she could still upset the odds here. The kingmaker could be Sinn Fein’s Johnny Mythen. If he is eliminated before George Lawlor, his preferences could possibly push Malcolm far enough ahead of his nearest rival to make him uncatchable. Mentioning George Lawlor brings the attention to the Labour Party. While extremely well known for his work ethic and highly popular for his other
activities outside of politics in the Wexford town area, he may have a difficulty when he goes further afield. His vote will be an interesting barometer of Labour support for the general election which will be held within the next six months. The remaining candidates have to be seen as also-runs in a bye-election, and that’s not making little of any of them. It takes great courage and conviction to allow your name appear on a ballot paper. Their performances will be worth watching in the context of the forthcoming general election. Interesting days ahead then. HAPPY CHRISTMAS Happy Christmas and a Prosperous New Year to all readers of this column. Where possible please shop as near to home as possible and in particular try and support Slaney News advertisers. These are the people who pay local rates and taxes and employ local people. And most importantly of all be safe this Christmas. Any observations or comments on this column feel free to email: viewcolumn@gmail.com
Lots happening in Enniscorthy this Christmas on 12th november 2019 approx 30 local business people attended an enniscorthy business association (eba) meeting in toffee and thyme Restaurant, enniscorthy, at which plans to improve the retail offering and christmas atmosphere in the town were discussed. Dermot Kavanagh of Smyth’s Homevalue, who chaired the meeting, requested all attendees to supply their contact details so that the EBA could set up a WhatsApp group to allow the committee and attendees to stay in touch with one another. Any business person who would like to join the group should contact Dermot or any EBA committee member. Mr Jimmy Gahan, Development Officer with Enniscorthy & District Chamber, attended the meeting and offered his support for the EBA’s initiatives. Since the meeting of 12th November, the EBA has also met with Mr Ger Mackey, Enniscorthy Municipal District (EMD) Manager. The following positive developments have emerged from the above meetings. christmas lights: Some additional areas of the town are being lit up this year by EMD. fab friday: Many shops and businesses are participating in an EBA “Fab Friday” initiative between 4-6pm for the
Family enjoying a visit to Santa’s Enchanted Castle, Enniscorthy.
four Fridays before Christmas i.e. starting 29th November. Each business will devise its own promotion such as discounts, free mulled wine/mince pies, face-painting, free gifts with purchases over a certain amount, etc. free parking: The EBA welcomes the Free Parking promotion for Enniscorthy town being introduced by Enniscorthy Municipal District. The availability of two hours of Free Parking each Saturday from 30th November to 21st December, and on the 23rd and 24th of December, in the town’s carparks, is a welcome boost for local businesses and shoppers. shopfront competition: A more ‘Christmasy’ look to the town will be achieved this year
as many shops will be making a better effort with their shopfront/window due to a competition which is being organised by the EBA. Each shop will post a photo of their shopfront/window to the ‘Enjoy Enniscorthy’ Facebook page by 14th December. The public can then vote and the winning entrant will receive a prize of €100. staff competition: Staff are being encouraged to dress up in Christmas gear to add to the Christmas atmosphere in town. Businesses can post photos of their ‘Christmasy’ staff on ‘Enjoy Enniscorthy’. Each shop can enter as many staff as they like for the competition by posting individual photos of each staff member on the ‘Enjoy
Enniscorthy’ Facebook page by 14th December. The public can then vote and the winning staff member will get a prize of €100. street theme: The EBA is encouraging all streets in town to try and do something extra on their own streets to add to the Christmas atmosphere. For instance, traders on Rafter Street have done some wonderful decorating of the trees there and also placed some novelty items on the street which will faciliate photo opportunities.. christmas music: A local shop has now taken over the piped music which plays in town over the Christmas period to ensure more variety and more appropriate operating hours. extended opening hours: Many businesses are opening three Sundays in December with some opening on the four Sundays. The EBA is encouraging businesses to maximise their opening hours as much as possible during December. christmas decorations: Enniscorthy Municipal District has unveiled a giant Christmas Tree in the Market Square (after the initial tree was removed by them following an outcry from the general public and local buisnesses that it was not up to scratch!) and some additional Christmas decorations are being placed by the Council around the town.
choirs/carols: Various local choirs will perform around the town over the Christmas period. parking generally: The EBA is encouraging businesses and their staff, particularly in the run-up to Christmas, to avoid parking on the streets in the centre of Enniscorthy and in the town-centre carparks, and instead to use the several €2-a-day carparking options on the outskirts of town. This frees up the prime, town-centre parking for shoppers which will encourage greater retail activity in the town which will benefit businesses and shoppers alike. enniscorthy gift vouchers: Enniscorthy Chamber is working on improvements to the Enniscorthy Gift Voucher scheme and all shops are strongly encouraged to accept Enniscorthy Gift Vouchers which can be bought in Enniscorthy Credit Union; Frizelle, O’Leary Solicitors; Enniscorthy Chamber
offices on Templeshannon Quay; or online at www.enniscort h y c h a m b e r. i e . C o n t a c t Enniscorthy Chamber for more information. transition years: It is hoped that Transition Year students will set up their mini-company stalls around the town. –––––––––––––––––––––––––– Businesses are being encouraged to spread the message on social media and elsewhere that due to the new motorway it’s now so easy to get in and out of Enniscorthy with little or no traffic congestion, and lots of available parking. The EBA will be using its own ‘enjoy enniscorthy’ Facebook page to spread that message. That page will also be used to keep businesses and local people up to date with all that’s happening over the Christmas period, so all are encouraged to check that page regularly for updates and Like and Share the content. n
Are you looking for the perfect Christmas gift? Enniscorthy Gift Vouchers are ideal and can be used in lots of shops and businesses in Enniscorthy. They can be bought in Enniscorthy Credit Union, Frizelle, O’Leary Solicitors, in the Enniscorthy Chamber offices on Templeshannon Quay or online at www.enniscorthychamber.ie

AN EXTRAORDINARY ORGANISATION As Wexford County Council Chairman I was asked to attend the Civil Defence awards ceremony last autumn. At the awards I observed ordinary people, men and women of all ages, from all areas of the county, enjoying the proceedings. What was obvious was how proud they were to be members of the Civil Defence organisation. The comradery and bonds were there for everyone to see. However, the reserved, easy-going, next-doorneighbour type vibe is quite deceptive because when you delve a little deeper these people are not that ordinary at all. It is worth noting at this point

that Civil Defence is a voluntary organisation assisted by the Dept of Defence and Wexford County Council on a 70/30 basis. A member is trained to the highest standard in the areas of casualty, rescue, first aid, auxiliary fire services, etc, with certificates of excellence on land, mountain terrain, water, and air rescue. You can see that they are well versed in any emergency that can arise at any major local or national events. And they have the appropriate hardware, equipment and vehicles on tap to tackle any emergency – jeeps, fire engines, ambulances, etc, everything from ropes to boats.
The organisation has assisted in many high-profile incidents from fires to rescues. Indeed the recent storms that hit the region have given many an eye-opener to their skillset. Any emergency has a taskforce to deal with it, and the Civil Defence is at the top table along with their partners – the Gardaí, the Fire Service and the Ambulance Service – all this to serve and protect the community they live in. And all voluntary! Is that the action of what you would call ordinary people? By anyone’s yardstick, I think not. Is Civil Defence for you? Call 053-9198265 n
Medicine Programme which requires 95% of patients being handed over from an ambulance crew to the emergency department staff in less than 20 minutes, and where this is not met, corrective action should be taken. New information received by Fianna Fáil shows that the HIQA 20-minute target was only met in 7% of cases in Wexford while the HSE 30minute target was only met in 24% of cases. Malcolm said, “These figures are absolutely shocking, but what makes it worse is the fact that two years ago these figures stood at 28.7% and 57.8% respectively. “So we see a drop in turnaround times of 21% when it comes to meeting the 20

Fine Gael continues to delay smoky coal ban – Browne fianna fáil td for wexford James browne is warning that unless the government implements a nationwide smoky coal ban, people will end up with serious respiratory conditions. his comments come as the air quality in enniscorthy exceeded safe levels again, with a thick smog hanging over the town. Deputy Browne explained, “Enniscorthy has been suffering from serious air quality issues for years, with local community groups, sports clubs and council officials raising the issue regularly. Despite consistently breaching EPA levels, the government continues to refuse to extend the smoky coal ban. “The situation in Enniscorthy has deteriorated significantly in recent weeks, with a smog lingering over the town in the evenings. There is no doubt that this is having an impact on the health of people living in the town and surrounding areas.
“The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) attributes 1,180 premature deaths in Ireland every year to air pollution. It causes strokes, heart disease and lung cancer, as well as respiratory conditions. “Fine Gael promised to rollout a nationwide smoky coal ban back in 2017 but now it appears as if Minister Richard Bruton is reneging on this commitment. The fact that Fine Gael is putting the interests of the coal industry above people’s health tells us all we need to know about its priorities. “This government is talking out of both sides of its mouth – on the one hand it’s preaching a conversion to climate action initiatives, while at the same time refusing to introduce a smoky coal ban, which would reduce pollution and harmful, toxic substances. Fine Gael needs to step up and put people’s health first”, concluded Deputy Browne. n
Sharp deterioration in ambulance turnaround times at Wexford hospital – Malcolm Byrne fianna fáil councillor and bye-election candidate for wexford, malcolm byrne, has said urgent action must be taken to reduce the ambulance turnaround time at wexford general hospital. Ambulance turnaround times measure the time interval from ambulance arrival at a hospital, to when the crew is ready to accept another call. The Health Information and Quality Authority (HIQA) recommends an ambulance turnaround target of 20 minutes while the HSE sets it at 30 minutes. In 2012 HIQA said that all hospitals in Ireland should monitor the implementation of the National Ambulance Patient Handover Time in line with the National Emergency

minute target and 33% with the 30 minute target. This is in less than two years and despite the fact that the HSE budget has never been as big. “The delay in the transfer of patients from the ambulance to the respective emergency department is causing immense pressure on the system. The main reason for the delay is because the emergency departments are too busy with too few staff to process a patient coming in by ambulance. “It’s another vicious cycle, if the emergency departments are too busy then there is a delay taking patients in from ambulances. If there is a delay taking patients in from ambulances, then the ambulance response times are going to

Enniscorthy Municipal District M a n a g e r G e r M a c k e y, Chairperson Kathleeen CoddNolan, and Councillors John O’Rourke, Jackser Owens, Aidan Browne, as well as James Browne TD and expublic representatives John Browne and Keith Doyle. Jim is fondly remembered as a man for all seasons, who had time for everybody and who was proud of all his family. He loved Enniscorthy, life in general and the great outdoors particularly fishing on the Slaney. Jim was well known over the years in the poultry busness having started working as a youth with his father buying and selling poultry. He maintained an interest in that business up until recent years. Another area he was associated with was soft fruits with a particular interest in blackberries which he gathered for export to England for use there in the dye industry. Jim was fondly referred to by
many as “the blackberry man”. Politics was another keen interest for Jim, and he was active in the local Fianna Fáil organisation for many years. He also was a keen GAA man, supporting the local Rapparees-Starlights club at every opportunity. Jim lived a full and active life and is fondly remembered by all as a family man, generous, charming, kind-hearted and good humoured. The unveiling of the new bench dedicated to his memory is a fitting tribute to the late Jim Dobbs. n

CAMHS update... minister paul Kehoe td has confirmed that the new child and adolescent mental health services (camhs) facility in wexford will be ready for occupation before the end of this year. Minister Kehoe said he has been in regular dialogue with Health Minister Simon Harris and is delighted that the relocation from Slaney House to Arden House in Whitemills is making significant progress. There have been delays in this project, Minister Kehoe said, adding that he has now been assured by Minister Harris that the project will be finalised by the end of 2019. "I very much welcome this development and I know this state of the art facility will be welcomed by both patients and staff." statement from the dept of health on Relocation of

The local CAMHS Team were fully consulted regarding the Schedule of Accommodation and contributed to the design of the clinical area. This involved direct engagement with team members, to include team meetings and on-site visits of the premises. The new building will be reconfigured to provide clinical space for CAMHS in Wexford. The HSE are carrying out an Option Appraisal on the future use of Slaney House. No final decision has been made todate.” n

Fianna Fáil Spokesperson on Mental Health James Browne TD has called on the HSE to establish a new system of recording the number of people without beds in our Emergency Departments and right across hospital wards. The current HSE Trolley GAR system focuses solely on trolleys and fails to account for people on chairs or on the floor in wards. Deputy Browne said, “Hospitals across the country are reporting shockingly high trolley figures, but on top of that are dozens of patients left on chairs, and on the floor, as they wait to be treated or admitted.

NEW SYSTEM NEEDED TO SHOW TRUE HORROR OF OVERCROWDING – Browne
“In University Hospital Waterford, we had photos emerging of the situation in the psychiatric unit where as many as 10 patients were being treated on chairs or on the floor. This is not only abhorrent, it is inhumane. “There is a sense of complacency beginning to creep in with regard to the overcrowding crisis, and the current recording system is not even reflecting the true extent of the situation. This suits the Health Minister, but it is not acceptable. “I am calling on Minister Harris and the HSE to establish a new system of recording hospital overcrowding by including people waiting on chairs and on floors. Only then will we see how serious the situation has become and be able to deal with it effectively. Fine Gael has turned a blind eye to the daily trauma that people in our Emergency Departments, and right across our hospitals are facing. It’s not good enough”, concluded Deputy Browne.
Co.Wexford and the Broadband Plan some 22,175 homes in co. wexford are to benefit from a €88m investment under the rollout of the national broadband plan. that's according to minister paul Kehoe who said the infrastructure will better the lives of thousands of families and business owners. The €3bn plan will see broadband extended to 540,000 premises nationally with work b e g i n n i n g i n J a n u a r y. Approximately 300 community centres, schools, library hubs and local GAA halls in every county in Ireland will be connected to high speed broadband during 2020, to enable communities to quickly get free public access to high speed broadband. “The delivery of highspeed broadband will be

connected devices; smart farming opportunities; digital learning; and reliable electronic payments and bookings for businesses,” Minister Kehoe said. “We want to ensure that people who wish to live and work in Wexford are supported in doing so. It is so crucial for balanced regional development that everyone in the country does not have to go to Dublin to work, study or start an enterprise." Mythen’s vigorous campaign Enniscorthy Chamber Soiree at the Riverside park hotel in enniscorthy in early november, sinn féin’s leader mary lou mcdonald, and wicklow td John brady, joined their party’s bye-election candidate – enniscorthy’s Johnny mythen, for a campaign launch. The room full of activists and supporters also included Kathleen Funchion TD (CarlowKilkenny), and current and past Sinn Féin county councillors. Topics raised during panel speeches and the Q&A afterwards included mental health services, healthcare, housing, the prospects for a united Ireland amid Brexit, and political accountability. Mary Lou McDonald said that the housing crisis, and social tensions it caused, were “not acts of God we have to accept – they are the direct result of government policy, which can and must change.” She said that what separated Sinn Féin from other parties, is that its “mission is to stand up for ordinary people – we are not in the back pocket of vested interests of big business, and banks don’t pull our strings.” John Brady pointed out that it was the centenary of 1916 Enniscorthy hero Seán Etchingham being first Sinn Féin TD elected in Wicklow, and that now Wicklow Sinn Féin – along with other neighbouring counties – would like to help return the favour.
L-R: Sinn Féin TD John Brady, Leader Mary Lou McDonald, and Wexford bye-election candidate – Enniscorthy’s Johnny Mythen.
Candidate Johnny Mythen pointed out how New Zealand’s parliament had just passed a specific mental health budget – the first of its kind among Western countries – and that this showed that people’s happiness could and should be a priority as practical policy, contrary to “spin” that it had to be sacrificed for the economy. He also said that County Wexford TDs would have to be held accountable for their Dáil and Budget votes in Dublin, “and then turning around back in Wexford and saying how something needs to be done” about the same issues. He concluded by saying: “Let’s fight the good fight – let’s do it for Wexford.” Music and song was pro-
vided before, during, and after the launch, by Bill Kavanagh, and Ed Barker. Since the launch, Johnny Mythen has run a vigorous campaign highlighting local and national social and economic issues. Issues raised include homeless rough-sleepers and seeking clarification on supports for such vulnerable people, and also raising concerns about the accuracy of numbers reported. He has also highlighted insurance “rip-offs” by the insurance industry, the huge home-help waiting list in Co. Wexford, and many other social and economic issues. He also has pledged to “deliver a strategy to empower the Credit Union movement - a positive framework for growth.” n

Holding On is the second releasefromtheEnniscorthy born, Berlin-based, independentartistOrian;ahauntingandpassionateoffering co-writtenwithinternationally acclaimed songwriter ErikAlcock, whohaswritten and released with internationalartistssuchasCeline DionandEminem, andcoproduced by Truancy and KalousMusic. Holding On is a delicate guitar melody driven, emotional and vocally powered track that showcases another side to the indie pop artist. Written during the summer of 2019, Holding On finds Orian at his most raw and honest; which can be heard in the passionate vocal performance. An emotive track that touches off the idea of our struggles as human beings to find our place in an all-consuming,
stressed-out world; and allowing ourselves to feel the worth that we all truly deserve to feel in order to find happiness, success and love. Having performed as Joey Ryan for almost a decade, 2019 saw Ryan morph into Orian; a natural progression that reflected the songwriter’s move away from his folk and acoustic roots. After independently releasing his debut single Tryin’ in May 2019, and achieving support from Irish radio stations such as RTE Radio One, BBC Ulster, RED FM, BEAT 102-103, KCLR, Dublin City FM and Shannonside, alongside support from Radio Eins and Fritz Radio in Germany, Holding On is a strong and honest follow-up to his first release, which has to date reached over 65,000 streams on Spotify, and is still climbing.
With influences ranging from The National to Bon Iver; Hozier to John Mayer; Orian is guitar melody-based, atmospheric melancholic pop; with strong, catchy toplines. After spending the last year touring Europe with bands such as Bastille, George Ezra and Jet, Holding On was supported by a full-band show in Berlin on 21st of November, followed up by a nationwide German Tour in early 2020, accompanied by a third single, before the release of a four-track EP in Autumn 2020. Holding On is available now on all streaming and online music store platforms. WelcometotheDecemberissue oftheSlaney Newswhereyou willgetallthebitsandbobson the social dance scene in the southeast. Besides all the listed dances here, there will be plenty of oneoff Christmas dances popping up, so keep a lookout for them in your local papers and radio stations. The SoutheastR'n'RClub here in Enniscorthy have some great gigs coming up. "The HankWilliamsTributeBand" are in the Bailey, Saturday Nov. 30th. "Mons Wheeler Band" play the same venue, Saturday Dec. 7th. "TheBellefords" play the I.F.A. Centre, Saturday Dec. 21st. I'm a big fan of Hank Williams. He wrote 167 songs and recorded hundreds more in his short lifetime, as he died in 1953 at the young age of 29 from the overuse of prescription drugs he was taking for his back problems. The drink didn't help either. Known as the true king of country music, his son, Hank Williams Jnr, now
aged 70, is still keeping his dad's memory alive. Now, we had our dancefloor all packed away for the winter, nice and dry too after escaping the rain in Tommy Tutty's on our last outing. So when I got a call to see if we would attend the Tinahely pointto-point on the 17th of November I was in two minds. Not sure if we would have to keep turning off the music every time the races were on and worse of all, getting caught in the rain and having the job of trying to dry the floor off after. Anyway, I agreed to go if the forecast was good, and I was assured we'd only have to stop for 5 minutes during the races. It all went ahead on the day as it turned out. It was bitterly cold but the sun was shining and the dancing seemed to go down well with the punters in between the races. And to top it all, I won a few bob on the first race! It was a totally new type of event for us and as the attendance is dropping over the years at

Enniscorthy Drama Group announces new play
Charlie says Hello to Halo
After the fantastic run of Blood of Nosferatu by Daryl Pickett, Enniscorthy Drama Group is delighted to announce its next play which is Wild in the Country, a brand new tragiccomedy by Enniscorthy writer Paul O’Reilly. Auditions were held in the IFA Centre early in November. Taking over the director’s reins this time is Enniscorthy Drama Group stalwart Fintan Kelly. It’s an all-adult cast consisting of 4 men and 2 women.
Charlie Murphy, known for her role as Siobhan in RTE's Love/Hate and as Jessie in Peaky Blinders, will appear as a series lead on the show, which is based on the video game franchise of the same name and is set to begin production shortly in Budapest.
A TV series based on the hugely popular Xbox game Halo is finally set to start production and it has been announced that an Irish actress has joined the impressive cast list.
The Enniscorthy native joins previously announced series lead Pablo Schrieber, who will play the Master Chief, as well as Natascha McElhone, Bokeem Woodbine, Shabana Azmi, Bentley Kalu, Natasha Culzac, and Kate Kennedy. The series is currently scheduled to air in early 2021.
Ashdown Park Hotel, Gorey: 19th Derek Ryan; 29th Mike Denver. NEWRELEASES: JimDevine - "Since I Met You". Great lively Quickstep/Jive song all about the showbands and the dance scene in Ireland. PaulKelly - "Hughies Oul Jeep". Another very fast song from Paul and with tyres as bald as Paddy's head and springs that came from Barney's bed! It's sure to be a hit with all the young farmers. It even has baler twine holding it together! TrevorMoyles - "Long Tall Sally". Originally released by Little Richard in 1956, I have to say I really like this. It's Rock 'n' Roll to the core and Trevor's voice really suits this track. Great Jiver. SeamusMoore - "She Only Wants to Dance". Great Quickstep about a north Mayo spinster who far prefers dancing with a brush than a man. Very catchy and popular in my classes. It would have to be a quare song coming from Seamus!

Blood of Nosferatu – A Review Enniscorthy Drama group has just completed a most successful run with Darryl P i c k e t t ’s p l a y B l o o d o f NosferatubasedontheBram Stokerfamousvampirestory –Dracula. With a cast of 16, a myriad of special effects and running for 5 consecutive nights, this was a most ambitious undertaking for an amateur drama group and would have a limited and specific audience – not everyone enjoys horror but it is a testament to the quality of both the casting and the acting that The Presentation Centre had good attendances at each of the 5 performances. Make-up and costumes were top class and if I would have any criticism it would be that with the lighting effects it was difficult at times to see and appreciate the excellence of the work. I understand that it may have been the wish of the Director to always keep Dracula in the shadows and half-darkness contributing to his macabre mystique but it is my humble opinion that it would have had more horrific
impact if we could have seen him and his brides in better light. The set was minimal and worked well, however the set changes and lighting were too pedestrian slowing the pace and effect of the production. The casting was good and indeed in some instances excellent, Ronan P Byrne’s Dracula was simply magnificent. His voice at once menacing and aristocratic, his face horrific yet darkly alluring, his body dominant and vigorous, his movements veiled and almost animalistic, exuding power, violence, evil and fear yet strangely magnetic and desirable – the perfect Dracula. P r o f . A b r a h a m Va n Heisling, Dracula’s chief antagonist is an experienced, competent man – ‘a philosopher and metaphysician’ and Richie Cotter fitted that description in every way. Superbly cast as the hero of the piece, Cotter, who is a newcomer to EDG, looked the part. His stature, gestures and demeanour giving him an onstage presence at once commanding respect and radiat-

ing protection. This is a good man, one you can trust to do what is right. Well done Richie, very impressive. Mina Murray – Hannah McNiven, Lucy Westenra – Kate Breen and Miriam Westenra – Jennifer Riggs Miller Boyd, are simply marvellous together with their splendid uppercrust English accents, their beautiful clothes and their impeccable manners. They marry well as a threesome in early scenes depicting all that is good and wholesome about Victorian women – purity, innocence and Christian values. Kate Breen then does a most convincing transformation to wanton woman as she succumbs to the charms of Dracula and Hannah McNiven’s acting is strong, vigorous and powerful as she tries desperately to save her friend Lucy and find her fiancé Jonathan Harker. All three of these female roles are exceptionally well cast and as are the Brides of Dracula – Julie Moorehouse, Karen Franklin and Laura Franklin – these three look amazing with just the right blend of wickedness and lust and are reminiscent of the Witches of Eastwick – girls you played a blinder, Jack Nicholson would have been proud of you. Jonathan Harker, the young, naive, conscientious and hardworking solicitor was very well portrayed by Alan Kinsella. Alan is well cast in the part looking very much the dapper, well groomed, English professional determined to do his job well and objectively despite the morbid strangeness of his new client. The romance between him and Mina is tender, extremely proper and very Victorian and yet he succumbs most convincingly to temptation and seduction in the end.
Another excellent casting is Pat Murphy in the role of Thomas Renfield. Pat, who plays a patient from a mental asylum and a servant of the Master, has the very difficult task of portraying two characters – one a rather refined, mild-mannered gentleman and the other, triggered by the consumption of red meat – a violent, evil and cunning manifestation that feeds on living things – spiders, bugs and flies and answers only to the Master – Dracula. Excellent performance Pat. John Steward, the talented young doctor at the mental asylum, played by John Kirwan, Father Shaughnessy played by Peter Canning, Arthur Holmwood and the aristocratic Lord Godalming, played by Murt Murphy and Quincy Morris, the plain-talking American played by Jer Ennis, all give good accounts of themselves as each in his own way tries to save the lovely Lucy from eternal damnation. And finally, the innocent Sally played by Jennifer Kelly and her older sister Harriet played by Maeve Ennis, are definitely ones to watch for the future. Making their debut with EDG, they were relaxed and composed on stage well beyond their years, with excellent delivery and timing – these girls are naturals and mark my words we will be seeing a lot more of them going forward. Two potential stars, of that I’m certain. Well executed by talented Director Tom Reddy and hardworking backroom team, a most elaborate and innovative undertaking by EDG linking as a fringe event of the new Enniscorthy Halloween Festival – well done to all for thinking outside the box! – Maria Nolan

Fianna Fáil Councillor and ByeElection candidate for Wexford, Malcolm Byrne, says the government needs to get serious on delivering home care supports. Cllr Byrne made the comments after figures revealed to Fianna Fáil show 6,871 bed days were lost at Wexford General
Hospital since the start of this year. This figure is one of the highest of any hospital outside of Dublin. He said, “What this means is that there were people eligible to be discharged from the hospital but had no access to an appropriate step-down care facil-
ity or home help provision. They had to be kept in the hospital network and the hospital lost 6,871 bed days. “These people don’t want to be in an acute setting and the medical professionals don’t want them to be in an acute setting, but there is nowhere else for
them to go. This is putting huge pressure on the rest of the hospital network, and the vicious cycle will continue until decisive action is taken. “What we need is more home support hours, home care packages and respite support for families.” n

Town & Village Renewal
Look Good Feel Good oulart and county camogie star ursula Jacob looked stunning as MC for the oulart/the Ballagh Look Good Feel Good fundraising event at the riverside Park hotel recently, in an eye-catching creation from no.58 Boutique, Wexford. Looking very much the fashion icon herself, Ursula introduced the afternoon’s programme of events beginning with an exquisite floral arranging demonstration by Flowers by Grace. Rosaleen Storey gave a most detailed demonstration of Kinesiology assisted by young camogie player Aoife Dunne, explaining how the treatment can help the body heal itself by identifying areas of injury and stress. Elaine Scully of Lainey Style showed the Riverside audience how to make the most of their clothes and maximise the wear they get out of them by styling two dresses in a variety of ways
giving a total of six very different looks. Elaine had some excellent advice and tips adding accessories and boots/shoes to the outfits. Barber Eddie O’Leary gave willing volunteer Paigue Doyle the ‘before and after’ treatment on stage making him look very slick indeed before Joanne Dunne shared some expert advice on buying and applying makeup. Trish Rackard’s models from Yellow Rose strutted their stuff in beautiful clothes from the Enniscorthy boutique after which everyone was invited to browse the myriad of stands around the room including style items, jewellery, accessories, hats, scarves, crafts, gift ideas, artisan foods and much, much more. A most enjoyable occasion and no doubt a most lucrative fundraiser for Oulart/The Ballagh Camogie Club. – Maria Nolan

The enchantment of Christmas Creative juices were overflowing at the Enchantment of Christmas themed gala Floral demonstration hosted by County Wexford garden and Flower Club recently at riverside Park hotel, Enniscorthy. The annual gala demonstration showcases an amazing local display of floral expertise, creativity and talent which simply gets brighter, bigger and better with every passing year. The Gala Demonstration was given by world show winner Eileen O’Brien from Kinsale who had the audience not just enthralled with her imaginative creations but in stitches with many anecdotes and stories about ‘himself’. ‘Himself’, of course, being her husband Jerry who doesn’t quite seem to have the same enthusiasm for all things floral as herself. Eileen asked the Riverside gathering at the outset if they wanted to hear how to do things or hear a story and continued
in that vein very reminiscent of that most colourful storyteller, author, Alice Taylor. Eileen was informative and entertaining telling how she decided when she became a Demonstrator to talk about herself and himself because noone would know which was fact or fiction except Jerry who obviously doesn’t attend floral demonstrations. And maybe just as well as Eileen related how she had him on a diet recently of Camembert cheese and Tuna fish because she needed 16 cartons and tins for a display she had in mind and all the while Jerry thought she was endeavouring to expand his culinary experiences. A very warm, amusing, and charming lady, and once again a most enjoyable event with exquisite and intricate displays from many members of the Garden and Flower Club creating enchantment of the most imaginative and beautiful variety. – Maria Nolan

An Ode to Christmas Dinner Love fruit & veg – in season By Oonagh Trehin BSc MSc ANUTR Oonagh Trehin is a registered associate nutritionist (ANutr) from Co. Wexford. She studied nutrition for four years at Queen Margaret University in Edinburgh, and received a BSc Nutrition in 2016. In November 2017, she graduated from an MSc in Public Health at the University of Sunderland. Her passion for nutrition and science led her to set up Little O Nutrition which offers an evidence-based, judgementfree, friendly service. Oonagh will be contributing a regular column to the Slaney News.
at this time of year, you will read many messages about Christmas food swaps, cutting the calories in your favourite festive foods and alternative options for Christmas dinner. however, i want to stand in defence of the classic Christmas dinner. Firstly, the classic Christmas dinner is a relatively balanced meal. Turkey and ham provide protein and iron, potatoes provide carbohydrates, Brussel sprouts and carrots provide vitamins and minerals, gravy and stuffing provide fat, and the bread sauce is a great source of calcium! Plus Christmas cake and pudding are loaded with dried fruit, which is full of minerals and fibre. What’s more, sharing a meal with friends and family
is good for our health. Much of the research on the health benefits of the Mediterranean diet reports that social interactions over meals are positive for physical and mental health. So invite everyone over, and don’t forget the Christmas crackers. And, if you needed further reason to dig in, let’s not for-
get that it is the tastiest meal of the year! Christmas is a time to relax, have fun and make memories, and the food we eat on one day per year does not affect our overall health. With that in mind, please enjoy your Christmas dinner to the full this year. Forget about the calories and nutrition content for the day and take it all in. Eating and enjoying good food is not something we should feel guilty about, but rather something we should be grateful for, particularly if we can share that food with loved ones. In a recent survey launched today by supervalu, it has been revealed that the people of ireland are planning to consume more meat-free meals in the next 12 months than ever before. one in four people surveyed said they were going to try and make the effort to eat more vegetarian meals, with both women and dubliners more inclined to make the switch. Currently 59% of people are cooking meat-free meals at least once a week, survey results show. SuperValu is encouraging shoppers to love fruit and veg and to eat in-season produce, as only 14% of those surveyed said it was something they looked for when shopping. Gillian McGowan, Fruit and Vegetable Category Manager, SuperValu said; “At SuperValu we strive to ensure we work with all our Irish producers to provide the best quality seasonal produce for our shoppers. In season fruit and vegetables are tastier, more nutritious and incur less food miles. We highlight and promote our in-season produce in stores to help consumers identify the freshest and best quality local produce for the best value.” Worryingly, only 4% of respondents said they ate the recommended seven portions of fruit and vegetables every day, while over a third surveyed eat less than two portions each day. At SuperValu customers can easily get enough fruit and veg in their diet by mixing and matching their fruit and vegetables with two for €3 offers
across a range of up to 46 items. Each week SuperValu handpicks seven great value fruit and vegetable offers for just 49c and 79c. Aveen Bannon, Consultant Dietitian, commented on the findings; “It is very disappointing and worrying to see only 4% of people are getting their seven portions of fruits and vegetables a day. My advice to people is to eat a rainbow but particularly include fruit and vegetables that are in season! Fruits and vegetables contain natural compounds called phytochemicals which give them their characteristic colour, flavour, smell or texture. These compounds together with vitamins, minerals and fibre, can really help reduce the risk of many diseases. People should challenge themselves to include colour at every meal to reap these benefits and to boost their immune system. People can make simple changes to ensure they are getting more fruit and vegetables into their diets – changes such as, adding berries to their porridge or

Better late than never! Fianna Fáil td for Wexford James Browne has welcomed a belated decision by the transport Minister to arrange a meeting with his uK counterpart to discuss the ownership of rosslare Europort. Deputy Browne has been warning that Britain will control Rosslare Port after Brexit, unless the government acts to bring it under the control of the Irish State. “I have been raising the ownership issue with Minster Ross for over three years now, and only at the last minute, and when Britain is in
the midst of a General Election, has he decided to arrange a meeting”, said Deputy Browne. “Deputy Ross has shown absolutely no interest in Rosslare Europort, despite having responsibility for it. The port is currently owned by a British company set up under UK statute, with the British government delegating control of the Port and nearby rail lines to Irish Rail. It is not appropriate for another country to have control over a valuable strategic asset and I have been calling on Minister Ross to engage

with the UK government on this, without any success, until now. “I submitted a question to the Minister once again... and while his commitment to meet with the Secretary of State for Transport after the UK General Election to discuss the ownership of Rosslare is belated, it is welcome. “Given the fact that the latest Brexit deadline is at the end of January, I am urging Minster Ross not to delay on this issue any further”, concluded Deputy Browne. n
Pushing for IDA investment in Co. Wexford
L-R: Wexford’s Ed Murphy, Tom Enright and Minister Paul Kehoe meet IDA delegation Martin Shanahan, Denis Curran and Brendan McDonald. Pushing the case for Wexford as a stronger target for idaled investment formed the basis of a meeting in government Buildings last week. Minister Paul Kehoe, Chief Executive of Wexford County Council Tom Enright and the council’s Senior Economic Advisor Ed Murphy met a delegation from the IDA headed up by its CEO Martin Shanahan. The meeting heard how better cooperation between the IDA and Wexford County Council is important in order to bring more Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) to the county. The Wexford delegation, led by Minister Kehoe, impressed on the IDA the number of positives for businesses setting up in the county. These include the fact that office and staff costs are sig-
nificantly cheaper compared to Dublin, while at the same time Wexford is only 1-2 hours drive from the capital. The opening of new road facilities, including the Enniscorthy by-pass and the pending opening of the New Ross by-pass, were also cited as major positives. And Enniscorthy Technology Park and Gorey-M11 Business Park were cited as ideal locations for companies to set up shop. During the discussions, the Wexford delegation stressed the need for enhanced promotion of the region, stronger engagement and additional supports. There were also discussions about the potential to increase the number of IDA site visits to the county and the need to maximise grant funding.
Speaking following the meeting, Minister Kehoe said the IDA were extremely receptive to the views expressed by the delegation. “It is the shared desire of all stakeholders to have better engagement with the IDA which in turn will help result in greater investment and employment for Wexford and the South East,” the Minister said. “While the IDA already provides significant support, the statistics show that we are lagging behind other parts of the country. That’s something that I as minister am determined to see change,” he added. Minister Kehoe concluded by paying tribute to the IDA for their role in recent job announcements, as well as the significant increase in IDA itineraries visiting Wexford this year. n

It’s the end of the year, the end of a decade and I suppose it’s time for reflection. I look back on the year and yea there's been lots of ups and downs, plenty of challenges but lots of good stuff too. We said goodbye to trusted staff members, welcomed new personnel with new ideas and new directions for us. I've read numerous times that our greatest challenge becomes our greatest opportunity and it's not always easy to understand what’s meant by this. My take on it is that if we embrace our difficulties as agents of growth... what's life trying to teach or show us? We've all had those 'groundhog days' when that all too familiar challenge seems to land us right back at square one, right back where we began. It seems to keep doing it until we finally sit down and figure out what the heck is this telling me! When we do this we're well on our way to working our way through this pain or difficulty. For me, this was one of those years where some of those old chestnuts came up again and again. I suppose there was a reason for this, and in the bigger scheme of things the Big Man above has a divine design for all of us, so I looked to see what I could learn from it all. When I was stuck in the middle of these 'hard yards', as the rugby commentators would say, and didn't know what to do, I just handed it over, gave it back to this Higher Power, whether we call that God, the Divine or the Universe, that's our individual call. So every time I wasn't sure what to do I just handed it over, let it go and ye know everything just seemed to flow again. The more I just surrendered the whole situation, a better outcome than I thought possible seemed to unfold. My inspiration for this came from a book called 'The Untethered Soul' recommended to me by a good friend and it sat on my shelf for about a year before I picked it up!!! They say your teacher arrives when you’re ready to learn and this certainly was the case for me. When I handed over these worries and cares, life just seemed to take on a little bit of magic again. Yes there still are challenges but its easier to surmount them when you've let them go, they're not dragging you down anymore. So this is my wish for each and every one of you this festive season – to hand over those cares each day and let the magic in. It is a magical time of year and I just want to thank all our very loyal customers and staff for all your support and kindness during the year and the decade. We've come a long way in the last 10 years – achieving ‘clinic status’ first and then getting ‘hospital status’ and that only happens with your help and support. Have a very happy Christmas and may the new year bring your hope and dreams to fruition. Let the magic flow. n

E.U. Regions Day in Wexford
E.U. Regions Day: Wexford County Council was delighted to promote the various projects that are supported by EU funding under its remit, through an Open Morning at County Hall on 14th October 2019. The event was attended by members of the public and elected representatives where they learned more about the eight European co-funded projects currently underway here in County Wexford.
Misery for commuters local Fianna Fáil td James Browne has slammed the Fine gael government for failing to put an effective commuter plan in place for people living in Wexford and working in dublin. he says there are only two trains at peak morning times. now motorists are facing years of possible traffic chaos as plans to build an additional lane on the n11 are considered. D e p u t y B ro w n e s a i d , “Despite an increase in commuter traffic, there have been no additional carriages assigned to the [Wexford] rail services, never mind additional services. There are only two trains to serve the peak morning rush, and they are completely oversubscribed. The recent announcement by the government to purchase additional rail carriages include none for the Dublin
to Rosslare line. “Because of a lack of capacity in our rail services, commuters are being forced onto the roads, and are faced with a daily logjam beginning just south of Kilmacanogue. There are now 20,000 cars traveling from Wexford to Dublin every day... This extra lane is only needed due to a lack of planning for and provision of public transport. “I also believe commuters from Gorey and Wexford, who use this route every day, should be given the opportunity to feed into the consultation process. “I have already written to Wicklow County Council asking representatives to hold a public information meeting in Gorey so that the 20,000 people from Co. Wexford, who travel this route on a daily basis, have the chance to have their voices heard”. n

Wexford and the War of Independence Wexford and the War of Independence: Who Died and Why? was a lecture on 24th October at the Riverside Park Hotel by Prof. Eunan O’Halpin, organised by Wexford Co. Library Service, to explore how the next decade of Commemoration might be
approached and remembered. Prof. O’Halpin, introduced by Librarian Eileen Morrissey, spoke of his own family connections especially about his grandmother Katie Barry and of course her brother, his great Uncle Kevin Barry, and the period in Wexford from 1917 to 1921
outlining the fatalities – who they were and how they died. The purpose of the extremely well attended event according to Wexford Co. Council Director of Services John Carley and Leas Cathaoirleach of Enniscorthy Municipal District Barbara-
Anne Murphy, is to get the ball rolling on how the people of Wexford want to see the period remembered, following on from the very successful 2016 Commemorations. County Archivist Grainne Doran gave the audience details of the current collection in the
County Archives and put a call out for correspondence, photos and memorabilia that capture the family stories of the period. If you have anything that might be of interest please contact your local library with details. – Maria Nolan

As this was the first ever Comhairle Ceanntair in this area, due to the electoral changes brought in for the Local Elections last May, Mr Cowen said he was honoured to be in Kilmuckridge and to accept the good wishes of the Comhairle Ceanntair on behalf

County Wexford was undergoing significant change at present with close to €1 billion of investment in public infrastructure projects being delivered across the county. He added that the recent opening of the new Enniscorthy motorway provides real opportunities to develop enterprise and economic activity in this part of the county and that the futures of Enniscorthy and Bunclody were closely linked together. “With access to two motorways within 15 minutes, Bunclody is a well-connected town and has much to offer businesses in terms of its attractive setting, with particular opportunities to develop tourism into the future," said Mr Enright.
Other speakers on the night included Caroline Tully and Helen Conway of Blackstairs Web Design, Caroline Kidd of Star Content, and Jean O’Connell of O’Connell Marketing. Business owners received a demonstration of the new website and were able to sign up on the night to get a free online listing for their business. The speakers also gave those assembled advice for getting online, writing content for websites, marketing their business and planning for 2020. B-segment crossovers are hot property these days, guaranteed success in a market that seems to adore an Suvlike high seating position and more ‘rugged’ styling than the traditional hatchbacks on which they are based. Volkswagen has now furnished their showrooms with a full complement of SUVs with the eminent arrival of the baby to the clan – the new Volkswagen T-Cross. Priced from €22,495, the TCross occupies that sweet spot of the market where the compact crossovers reside. It’s blessed with good looks and is a far more interesting car to look at than the Polo. desirability does carry a premium but it’s one that buyers have proven they are willing to pay. In Ireland the new T-Cross is available in four trim lines and engines include a 1.0-litre turbo petrol engine (95hp or 115hp) and a 1.6-litre diesel (95hp). A manual gearbox comes as standard however a 7-speed DSG automatic is available. The T-Cross sits on the Volkswagen Group’s MQB platform, and is 54 mm longer than the Polo and 138 mm higher. It’s a compact car but by class standards it is generously sized and four adults should be comfortable enough. The boot is one of the best in

class, holding between 385and 455-litres thanks to a sliding rear bench that can be moved by 14 cm. Inside the T-Cross features the latest in Volkswagen design and technology. Cabin quality is very good, avoiding the cheap and nasty look. Volkswagen’s infotainment screens look and behave very well, with full smartphone compatibility. Trim lines include the entry level ‘T-Cross’, followed by the ‘Life’ starting at €24,550, ‘Style’ starting at €26,795 and ‘R-Line’ starting at €27,995. The ‘Life’ model has 16” alloy wheels, 8” infotainment system, App Connect, Climatronic Air Conditioning, 2 USB inter-
faces and Adaptive Cruise Control. The ‘Style’ models adds 17” alloy wheels, LED headlights, and a Chrome package, while the ‘R-Line’ model gains 17” wheels and an R-Line exterior package. The problem with the TCross is that it can get very expensive very quickly. Volkswagen are not after the budget end of the market with the T-Cross. The T-Cross R-line 1.0-litre DSG I was driving starts from €29,895, and at that price it would be in the market with larger cars. Small automatics are getting more and more popular and the T-Cross 1.0 DSG is a fine example of one. A 7-speed automatic gearbox is matched

to a small 1.0 litre petrol engine and works amazingly well. It’s a pleasure to drive, smooth and smart with no dim-witted gear changes present here. Motor tax for this model is €200 per year and over a week of driving my average fuel consumption was 5.9 l/100km. The T-Cross is fun to drive, refined and comfortable for what it is. The Volkswagen T-Cross recently won Irish Compact SUV of the Year at the Irish Car of the Year awards. The judges were unanimous in their recommendation of the new TCross. It feels like a larger and more substantial car than the Polo though there is not much between them in terms
of dimensions. It’s a more expensive car to buy but Volkswagen has a good track record in selling SUVs. The TCross is a highly desirable small SUV and the 1.0-litre petrol engine is a perfect mate for it! model tested: Volkswagen T-Cross 1.0 TSI R Line DSG. Price: €29,895 (range from €22,495). Engine: 1.0-litre turbo petrol. Power: 115 hp. Torque: 200 Nm. 0-100km/h: 10.2 seconds. Top speed: 180 km/h. Fuel economy: 6.3 l/100km. CO2 emissions: 111 g/km. Motor tax: €200 per year. n

Enniscorthy CBS student represented Co. Wexford at National Youth Assembly on Climate Change Among those selected to take p a r t i n t h e r e c e n t yo u t h Assembly in Dáil Éireann was Enniscorthy's own Harry nolan. Harry is a fifteen-year-old Transition year student in CBS Enniscorthy and had been selected by RTE to be one of the five delegates representing Wexford. The delegates were grouped into five committees to make, debate, and vote on proposals for combating climate change, and Harry took an active role in the Environment committee. The original thirty proposals were narrowed down to just ten by a process of committee votes and endorsed by the Assembly for submission to the government. Harry's committee ultimately put forward proposals to declare ecocide (the destruction of a given ecosystem through malice or negligence) a specific crime, and mandating that 10% of all agricultural land should be given over to forestry. Proposals from the other committees – Power, Economics, Farming, and Education included measures such as a ban on 'open' fridges in retail, a ban on the import of gases sourced from fracking, and replacing the pro-
posed consumer-based carbon tax on individuals, with a progressive tier based tax on polluting companies. The Youth Assembly sessions in the Dáil chamber itself were broadcast live on RTE 2, while the committee sessions were recorded and footage of them, and Harry, used prominently in news reporting. The Assembly was also picked up by the national and international press, being covered as far afield as CNN in America. It was a great experience for Harry and all the other delegates and a source of great pride for them to provide some service to their country at such a young age. Speaking about it, Harry said, "The RTÉ On Climate Youth Assembly was a superb experience to allow the youth of Ireland to present their views to an international audience. Through our work in various committees, we were able to generate ten excellent recommendations which now will be forwarded to all members of the Oireachtas. Many of these will be difficult to say no to. “I hope now that the government will now actually take
action, and not just talk about taking action and implement our recommendations, or else we will have to return.” After the assembly there was a reception at RTE in Donnybrook, with an all-vegetarian menu, and where Harry and the others got the chance to hob nob (and take selfies with) the likes of Marty Morrissey and Ryan Turbidy. Enniscorthy's delegate, Harry Nolan, has always been

very involved in outdoor life and has a keen interest in using modern technology to help overcome challenges. He's been a member of the Enniscorthybased GoPaddle.ie Kayak Academy since he was seven years old and is a familiar sight to visitors at events like the Rockin' Food Festival introducing people to the fun of life on the Slaney. Harry's also benefited from a great range of programmes
at CBS Enniscorthy designed to engage the students' interests in science and the environment. He's a member of the CBS Enniscorthy debating team, currently taking part in the Concern Debates (organised by the charity Concern) where he's been debating subjects such as world hunger and nuclear power. The CBS is also active in the SciFest national competition and Harry recently repre-
sented the school at the regional level in Waterford. He's previously been the school's entry into the Saffron Science video competition, where he created a proposal for revolutionising Ireland's electric-car-charging network that earned him a joint second place finish nationwide. Howie The Rookie Review by Kyle Walsh HOWIE THE ROOKIE PRESENTED BY STAGEMAD THEATRE. WRITTEN BY MARK O ROWE. STARRING FINTAN KELLY. As I sat there on the balcony looking down upon a stage with naught but two bar stools and a black curtain as its backdrop, in the charm of The Presentation Centre, Enniscorthy, hearkening Hans Zimmer’s music masterpiece Time from the film Inception playing in the background, anticipating the commencement of the play, I felt titillation that we as an audience were going to be treated to something thaumaturgic. There was great elation amongst the crowd as we took to our seats. Then, just like that, the divulgence came, preceded by quietness, as our headliner Fintan Kelly took to the stage. The two main characters are called Howie Lee and Rookie Lee. Both characters have a spat of problems that they have to face and try to sort out such as looking for money to pay a debt that can’t be paid, a dose of scabies, fights,
fish, family issues, and a grotesque woman called Avalanche. Along our journey with these characters we are also introduced to others. All with their own complications. Both Howie and Rookie find each other’s path again in an extraordinary scene and they soon unite together to try and sort out their problems. The phenomenal thing here is that all these characters are all brought to life with such skill by this one incredible actor. It’s quite marvelous to sit watching this piece unfold in front of you. It is truly a mammoth theatre experience. One that I certainly won’t be forgetting. There’s a degree of detail in the piece that makes the audience totally believe in the characters’ interior world. It’s more like Irvine Welsh, writer of the film Trainspotting, rather than Roddy Doyle. It doesn’t spare any of the scuzzier details when presenting the characters’ seemingly aimless existence. You can see characters like these any day not just in Dublin but all over the world. They seem aimless but they take to their motivations with
Fintan Kelly on stage at The Presentation Centre
single-minded purpose and dedication. Fintan tackles the syntax and knotty rhythms of the characters with an effortlessness that makes you believe he could reply to any question you
might put to him in character and it would seem as natural as breathing. He owns the stage using it as a character too, this is an actor who has his audience in his hand, not a cacophony within the crowd. You cannot take your eyes off him as he flings, squats, runs, dances, fumbles around the stage all hand gestures, all body movements, full of energy. It’s a physical performance as much as it is an interior character study. At the end of it he seems like he has lived the two days in these characters’ lives and if it were to go on beyond the allowed time one would fear for his sanity and health. It was a tour de force performance from Fintan Kelly. He’s a passionate, intense actor. A force of nature in stature. He captivated all of us. A genuine, phenomenal talent. It is great to have him as one of ours, a true gentleman. He has a huge future ahead in the acting world and I for one wish him every success. I feel the man should be the toast of the town. He absolutely deserves it. –kyle walsh
Remembrance Day at Enniscorthy
with Maria Nolan
THE SECRET LIVES OF ROSES This month I am reviewing a book that hasn’t been launched yet called The Secret Lives of Roses by Corkonian, now residing in Enniscorthy, Madeline Breen. Madeline, who has a BA in Drama, Theatre & English from UCC, has been writing for many years and has been shortlisted for WexWorld’s Short Story Competition 2018 and longlisted for the Colm Toibin Short Story Award 2019. She is a member of Enniscorthy Drama Group and has performed recently in Mary, Mary and Well Anything Quare. The Secret Lives of Roses tells the story of three ordinary women who display extraordinary courage as they struggle with some of the very difficult issues facing women in today’s Ireland. Claire, who works as a nurse in a Family Planning Clinic, has hit menopause and is getting very little support or sympathy from her rather distant husband. Pauline, Claire’s childhood friend and mother of five children under ten, finds herself pregnant with baby number six whilst farmer husband John seems to take more interest in the birthing of his precious cows than the traumas of his wife and young family. And the outspoken, independent Una, Pauline’s cousin, is battling with her earth-shattering diagnosis of cervical cancer. The three women and their individual battles converge in a modern Ireland where despite our liberal lip service things don’t seem to have changed very much when it comes to ‘woman’s problems’. Sounds depressing? Well it isn’t. Madeline has given each of her three heroines a distinct, gutsy, raw, real voice tinged with a wonderful sense of humour as they explore their dilemmas with sometimes very amusing slants and language. The issues the women face are on trend and current and yet the story has echoes of that marvellous 1989 film Steel Magnolias confirming the central point of the publication that nothing much has changed for Irish women in times of difficulty. Women’s problems are still looked upon as exactly that – problems that only affect women and then only some women – so no great urgency or onus on us to do anything about them. Each woman’s journey seems to be a lonely one as they keep their respective secrets from husbands, mothers, fathers, siblings, children and even other women so the point does need to be made that perhaps women are orchestrators of their own downfall when it comes to women’s problems. Madeline writes it as it is and writes it extremely well – this is a good read and I would defy any woman not to find it both interesting and even upsetting. This may be the story of three women but it could actually be the story of every woman given the same set of circumstances which is quite a wakeup call for us all. – Maria Nolan

LEST WE FORgET At the going down of the sun and in the morning we will remember them. On Sunday 10th November, Enniscorthy Historical Reenactment Society remembered the 102 Enniscorthy men who lost their lives in the Great War 1914-1918 at a Memorial Service in St. Mary’s Church where the Rev. David Bayne, deputising for the Rev. Nicola Halford, spoke poignantly of those who ‘gave their today for our tomorrow’ adding that 200,000 Irish men went to fight in WWI and over 50,000 of them never returned home, a huge impact on a small country like Ireland. At a solemn ceremony at Orchard Peace Park, Minister Paul Kehoe unveiled a plaque in their memory and wreaths
were laid by Vice-Chair of Enniscorthy Municipal District Council Barbara-Anne Murphy, Ian Kidd member of Enniscorthy Historical Reenactment Society and Kay Doyle on behalf of the relatives of the fallen. As MC for the event, I read the poignant poem by Dr. John McCrae – In Flanders Fields, and re-enactor Graham Cadogan read aloud the names of the 102 Enniscorthy dead. Minister Kehoe thanked EHRS for organising the ceremony saying, ‘It is important that we remember and honour all those who gave their lives so that we can enjoy the freedom we know today.’ Kay Doyle recited her emotive poem in memory of her father, and Anthony Nolan played the

Outgoing Artistic Director David Agler took a final bow as the recent 68th Wexford Festival Opera came to a close before formally handing over to the incoming Artistic Director Rosetta Cucchi, the Festival’s eighth Artistic Director in its sixty-eight year history. This year’s Wexford Festival Opera ran for 13 consecutive days with 41 public events, most of which were sold-out. Millions more from across the country and around the globe were treated to a taste of this award-winning international Festival through the live stream of Antonio Vivaldi’s Dorilla in Tempe. Union (EBU). Closer to home, and in an exciting new development, Dorilla in Tempe was also livestreamed into three Irish cinemas, the Lighthouse Cinema, Dublin, Pálás Cinema, Galway and Century Cinema, Letterkenny, marking the first time ever that an Irish-produced opera was broadcast live into Irish cinemas. The 69th Wexford Festival Opera will run from 20 October – 1 November, 2020. Seventy events over 13 consecutive days including 3 main evening operas, an orchestra gala concert with world-renowned US soprano, Lisette Oropesa, a full daytime programme and popup operas throughout the town of Wexford. Priority booking for the 69th Wexford Festival Opera opens in March 2020. Public booking opens on Saturday, 4 April 2020. For more information and full programme details see wexfordopera.com n
