Enniscorthy is clearly not an industrial town and is unlikely to become so in the foreseeable future. Our future economic well-being lies largely in retailing and tourism and both these elements depend to a large degree on how attractive the town is and how well we all maintain it. Retailing and tourism benefit greatly from the four major festivals held in the town each summer: Enniscorthy Street Rhythms Festival, Strawberry Festival, Riverside Jump and Blackstairs Blues. All these festivals are run by hard-working, local volunteers who need the full support and participation of the local population in order to thrive and draw in people from

all over Ireland thus benefitting Enniscorthy and local employment. Something else which would benefit the town would be a bronze medal at least in the upcoming Tidy Towns adjudication with the aim of achieving gold by 2016. We are getting close to achieving the bronze and with a little more effort by everybody that objective can be achieved. In particular it is crucial that we keep the town clean over the weekend of the Strawberry Festival as judging is likely to take place around that time. See more on this story on page 4. Our future is very much in our own hands. Let’s all make the effort! n

WHERE CAN I PICK UP THE SLANEY NEWS?

Amid all the national doom and gloom that still persists there is much positive news to report about Enniscorthy. First of all best of luck to Jacqui Hynes and her team in the National 1798 Rebellion Centre on their exciting new re-development and "Rebellion Weekend" on 25th and 26th May (see page 6). Church Street is looking exceptionally well after its recent makeover. A number of new businesses have set up including Forrest’s book and toy shop and Trotters Budget Furniture Store and we are aware of a number of other new businesses about to open which we’ll report on in next month’s issue. On the entertainment front the local musical society had a huge success with their run of The Sound of Music, the new Unplugged event in Bellefield GAA complex was a major success and among the highlights in The Presentation Centre were two brilliant concerts by Vladimir and Ain’t Misbehavin. Make sure to check out our website (www.slaneynews.com) and online edition (www.issuu.com/slaneynews). And check our Facebook page regularly for lots more positive news in the weeks ahead. – Frank Corcoran

All the ‘T’s – Tourism, Tidy Towns & Templeshannon At a well attended meeting in early April in The Presentation Centre, Enniscorthy’s Tidy Towns Chairman Billy Murphy outlined the town’s plans and objectives going forward. Billy stated that window boxes and floral displays were still important but we also need to focus on the whole fabric of the town and also on the perennial problem of litter. The meeting was also addressed by Barntown resident, Dara Hilliard, who has worked with various towns around Ireland to improve their Ti d y To w n s m a r k s . D a r a explained the marking system using a number of visual aids before clearly identifying 'litter

Looking at the impressive visual display at the recent Tidy Towns meeting.

Enniscorthy can most easily pick up extra marks in the immediate future. In 2012 Enniscorthy was only one mark short of getting a Tidy Towns bronze medal. The Tidy Towns committee is now aiming for gold by 2016. As always more help is needed for the town to achieve its potential. For example if more people could spare an hour of their time each weekend to pick litter Billy Murphy (087-1214262) or any of the other committee members would be delighted to hear from you. And remember – many hands make light work! Well done to Anton Treacy, the Templeshannon traders, the Town Council, the Tidy To w n s C o m m i t t e e , l o c a l designer Yvonne Jordan, and painting contractor Jonathon Dunne for the amazing transformation in recent weeks of theTempleshannon area through power washing and painting of all the business premises in vibrant colours making it an area more people will definitely want to visit. And a great example of the co-operation and initiative that will help Enniscorthy achieve gold by 2016!

RIKON Launches Research Programme for Destination Enniscorthy Related to the Tidy Towns work is the work of attracting more tourists to Enniscorthy. The more successful the town is in improving its marks in the national Tidy Towns competition the more tourists will want to visit the town and stay longer and, most importantly, recommend it to their friends and families. Maria Nolan reports on a recent meeting to address the issue of improving tourism numbers in the town of Enniscorthy… Pat Lynch and Josephine Matthews of RIKON – Ireland’s leading Service Innovation Centre located in Wa t e r f o r d I n s t i t u t e o f Technology – were on hand at the Riverside Park Hotel on Monday 15th April to launch their Research Programme for the town of Enniscorthy. Colm Neville of Enniscorthy Tourism welcomed all those in attendance saying that this was in the main an evening for those involved in the town’s retail trade and he looked forward

to everyone working together on this hugely significant project for the future of the town. He thanked Wexford Local Development for providing the funding to make this venture possible and encouraged everyone to work with Rikon, Enniscorthy Tourism and Visit Wexford to make Destination Enniscorthy a success. Pat Lynch and Josephine Matthews outlined the areas that they would be focusing on including Appeal, Appearance, Access, Infrastructure and Vi s i t o r S e r v i c e . I m a g e , Branding and Promotion are the key areas. Pat Lynch said we need to find out what makes Enniscorthy unique and then sell that concept to the tourist. Josephine went on to explain the process saying that they would be looking for information and feedback from the key stakeholders in the town including past visitors and the town’s decision makers under various headings – Key Challenges, Customer Value, Threats and

Opportunities and Core Appeal to list but a few – it is all about developing a key brand and unique marketing strategy for Enniscorthy. Rikon will provide an online toolkit for those interested in expressing their views and offering their opinions and ideas. The whole process will take between 9 and 12 months and will involve structured workshops which will culminate in a Presentation of Data and an Action Plan. Well done to Colm Neville and Enniscorthy Tourism and i n d e e d We x f o r d L o c a l Development for providing the much needed wherewithal to carry out this most necessary research programme for the town. We have a wonderful, old, picturesque, historic and cultural town and yet we have long since been left behind in the tourism area by those with far less to offer so it is high time we put our heads and our hearts together and put Enniscorthy on the map. – Maria Nolan

Bigger & Better Battle for 2013 Following on from the success of the inaugural Vinegar Hill Day Re-enactment on 4th/5th August last year another Call to Arms went out to the men, women and children of Wexford to assemble at the 1798 Centre on Tuesday 9th April. Manager Jacqui Hynes addressed the 40 strong contingent saying that plans were underway and already re-enactment groups from England, Scotland and Wales had confirmed that they would be attending this year’s event, along with a detachment of pikemen from Killala and of course Lord Edwards Own Reenactors from Kildare. The plan is to grow the spectacle from year to year fast becoming the major re-enactment in the coun-

try. Already Jacqui said Killala are getting in on the act hosting their event two weeks after Enniscorthy and planning to have a presence from both the

Irish and French Navies in the Bay. But 1798 is synonymous with Vinegar Hill and Wexford so it is up to us to claim it as our own and make it Ireland’s main re-enactment experience and tourist attraction. To this end Jacqui explained that we must all pay very special attention to detail and all outfits must be completely authentic – “this year’s performance must be slick and professional and we must all think of ourselves as actors not just Pikemen” she said. This year’s re-enactment takes place on the weekend of

Saturday at the 1798 Centre where the Blacksmith will be busy shoeing horses and sharpening pike-heads whilst the Redcoats will be garrisoned at Enniscorthy Castle and no doubt will be up to their usual foul play during the day with public floggings and other humiliations being foisted on unsuspecting citizens. A bit of a skirmish is due to break out on Saturday evening at Main Street and rumour has it that this is one fight where the Rebels will come out on top building momentum for the biggie on the Hill the following day. Our local Mens Shed is also

getting involved and are in the process of building a cannon for the Rebels. Last year over 2,000 people watched the event and the Irish Times visited and made their own footage of it. This August we hope to see larger crowds enjoying the experience especially from outside the county and overseas. It is the hope that we are watching the birth of something wonderful for Enniscorthy which will put us on the worldwide re-enactment map. Jacqui said that she would love to be able to hold the reenactment on 21st June – Vinegar Hill Day – but because The Battle of Waterloo is held in Belgium each year on 20th June this is a non-runner. However a commemoration will take place on Vinegar Hill on 21st June where all the dead of 1798 will be remembered. Jacqui Hynes has a vision to eventually put Vinegar Hill on a par with Waterloo as an annual event and a much needed and significant tourist attraction for the town and the county and she is certainly heading in the right direction. So come on don’t leave her to do it all on her own – sign up for the long haul – Your County Needs You! – Maria Nolan n

Get 50Gb online storage free Typical isn’t it, last month I write about online storage and the same week the article is printed Tresorit announce they’re giving 50GB free cloud backup. So what’s great about Tresorit has to be its strong security. Tresorit encrypts files before they’re uploaded. Technically speaking, files are encrypted with AES-256 before being uploaded to the cloud. Additional security is provided before upload by HMAC message authentication codes applied on SHA-512 hashes. Encrypted files are uploaded to the cloud using TLS-protected channels.

that has to happen first). Other Dropbox alternatives with client-side encryption, SpiderOak and Wuala, have more features, but Tresorit's interface is a lot more user-friendly. And it's hard to beat 50GB of free encrypted space. At the moment Tresorit is only available on Windows, but versions for Mac, Android and iOS are coming before the end of June.

View From The Nosebleeds JaMie’s Good news Batman: Arkham City was for my money the greatest game I have ever had the privilege of getting my mitts on. To go full geek, you actually felt like Batman. Your decisions as to how you approach a fist / gun fight had outcomes for you and at some stages the poor unwilling innocents held victim by the scum of Gotham. And you got XP points for “intimidating” said scum. Now for those who haven’t played it first off, what the hell? Secondly, I will not produce any major spoilers as regards the ending. But it left the game in a quandary, where do you get a sequel from that? The simple answer, you don’t! This train of thought must have influenced the decision for the newest addition to the Arkham franchise, Batman: Arkham Origins. As I said, it is not a sequel and Rocksteady Games will not be developing the title which initially made me recoil in nervous horror but from what I’ve seen so far it looks pretty tasty despite this revelation! The game focuses on Batman’s early years as The Caped Crusader.

However it is not a direct “origin” story, instead it focuses on The Black Mask aka Roman Sionis who puts a bounty on Bat’s pointy-eared head to try and get him off his back. Batman goes on to take out a number of assassins who are out to claim their prize and make their name over the course of a cold and dreary Christmas Eve in Gotham. Early screenshots look pretty impressive featuring the aforementioned Black Mask, The Penguin and Deathstroke. Half of the game will take place in Old Gotham, years before it was turned into the prison we saw in City. The second half will take place in New Gotham which looks to borrow heavily from Tim Burton’s Batman. This pleases me greatly as I wanted to live in that Gotham for a good two years when I was a young chap. The release date is set for October 25th this year and for more information and screenshots and indeed all things Bats, go to: h t t p : / / w w w. b a t m a narkhamorigins.com/ or www.ign.com. Beware False ProPheTs Now William Martin Murphy and his Dublin Millionaires

Tried bribery, corruption, hypocrisy and prayers To spite the Transport Union their scats they did enlist But all their graft was shattered by a scarlet iron fist. When the bosses tried to sweat the lads way down on Glasgow's Clyde A voice like roaring thunder soon shook them in their stride In Liverpool and Belfast where worker lives in Hell But Connolly rose and gave them hope, the truth to you I tell. Oh Irishmen the day will come when workers one and all will rise up from their bended knee and rally to the call Throw out the bosses tyranny and shout from shore to shore For a working man's Republic and freedom evermore. And Connolly was there, Connolly was there Bold, brave and undaunted; James Connolly was there. You know what it’s like. You’re in a bar, you see a woman that catches your eye. You are no longer John, the accountant from up the road who still lives with his mammy after the messy divorce. No, you are Big Bill Brady. You are just back

from a three month trek in The Andes where you went mountain climbing in your spare time. Your time was mostly spent helping poor orphans who were left homeless because of some disaster. You would offer her a lift on the Harley but it’s in the shop. People lie. If you want something, you lie to obtain it. The people you swore into power lied. They lied hard to get what they wanted. Labour wanted to bed the country; they wanted to have its wicked way so they promised us the following: • Child Benefit will not be touched • No increase in college fees • Fair taxation and higher taxes for the rich • Abolish prescription charges • No Property Tax • Burden sharing with bondholders. They all sounded lovely didn’t they? Sure, they’re great altogether. Only a moron, a dribbling moron would not vote for these smooth operators……

“What’s that? The Budget, ah sure that’s never pleasant… Here turn up the tele there… Sssh, here’s the first one”: • Child Benefit to be cut by €10 a month for the first and second child, €18 a month for the third child and €20 a month for fourth and subsequent children. “That’s not too bad… Bit steep but sure it won’t matter… you’ll be going to college sure…” • €250 increase in the registration fees. “They might hit the fat cats… I’ll be paying the same as the big fellas with their four houses…” • €264 increase in PRSI for all those including those earning under €18,000 a year. “Shite…. Least I’ll be able to get me tablets for me chest and your mother will be alright with the inhaler….” • Tripled the prescription for medical card holders. “Ah for f*** sake… Here. Least I owns the house…”

• A property tax at 0.18% of the value of your home. “F*****’ Hogan… This is ridiculous… Least them b********’ bondholders will be raked over the coals!!!!” • Bondholders, including unsecured bondholders continue to be paid in full. “ *********************** !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!” (Pulls tele out of the wall and fires it out the window, gets a letter about the licence anyway). The Great Rock And Roll Swindle? Nothing rock and roll about that, just a bunch of smooth-tongued devils, not holding pitch forks though. They’re winking on camera and kissing babies, trouncing all over the ideals the party was founded on. Enda Kenny called Margaret Thatcher “a formidable leader.” Who would’ve thought it, eh? A man admiring a woman that liked to make grown men quiver and shake like brassy school children? Oh, zat is some good strudel…. A woman that presided over a party which decimated small towns, families and vital industries and businesses, leaving families to make the decision, food or power? I can see why he was a fan alright. Why is the Festival FREE and back down on the Prom? Patricia Bird, the Event Manager of Strawberry Festival 2013, explains: ”We find it is beneficial to all involved to resort back to the original format.” Patricia continues: “The community needs a lift in these difficult economic times. It’s great for Enniscorthy in general with tourism to get a well needed boost, and with The Gathering what better way to spend your weekend from the 28th–30th June and have a live music festival to bring families and friends together. The Strawberry Fair is in its 46th year and started on the Promenade and worked extremely well in earlier years with the Harry McFadden Pleasure Planet Funfair and also now with the Farmers Market. There will be a beautiful flow and ambiance and entertainment for all the family. The Strawberry Committee is run by a very close, hard-working, voluntary group of people, and I am extremely proud to be part of the committee.”

One of the celebrities I spoke with at the Official Launch of the Enniscorthy Strawberry Festival 2013 was the legendary Irish footballer Paul McGrath who actually opened the festival some years ago and told me he really enjoyed it. Enniscorthy Hills Alive with the Sound of Music self as a terrific singer to anyone in Enniscorthy but took the opportunity to show herself as an excellent actress as well and indeed she wasn’t the only one! The Mother Abbess Caroline Daly Jones (real wife of Captain Von Trapp) has a superb voice and gave a truly passionate performance – her rendition of Climb Every Mountain was spellbinding and the rest of the singing nuns filled both the auditorium and the Abbey with their beautiful, clear voices. The Von Trapp children were precisely the Von Trapp children with well rehearsed and polished performances from the adorable Liesl, the demure Louisa, the very proper Friedrich, the encourageable Kurt, the matter of fact Brigitta, the timid Marta down to the very lovable Gretl played fantastically by 8-year-old Ailbhe Murphy. One could be left in no doubt about the future of Enniscorthy Musical Society having witnessed the beautiful singing and very plausible acting from these young and

The Scenes talk to Donal Cullen The scenes are a new and upcoming band with a line-up from kilkenny, wexford, Carlow and wicklow. This fresh new band do all their own stuff, totally original. Together for a year, their dream is to rock on with influences such as Oasis, Blur, Nirvana, Clapton, wow that’s a very wide range of influences. These guys are young, good-looking, energetic and full of ideas and are raring to go and take on the rock world, all I can say is “I’m in guys”. The Scenes are very much influenced by things all around them when they write. For the Strawberry Festival Launch they

did a half dozen of their numbers: Lost and Found, Alone, On and On, She Said, Fish out of Water, and Panic Avenue. I found these songs quite contemporary, ballady and rocky. I liked the guitar rift in Fish out of Water – it reminds me of Joe Walsh’s style from The Eagles. They have other songs like Wheels, About a Girl and Closing Time, I must check those out, but all in all a good set list. I liked what I heard and looking to the future, with Mick Kelly on guitar, the sound is good. Check The Scenes out yourself on Saturday 29th June at the Strawberry Festival and enjoy – the lads will knock your socks off.

very talented entertainers. Dick Butler as he said himself ‘once a Butler always a Butler’ fitted right into the part of Franz and I think even has a bit of a Germanic look about him and Niall Kavanagh as Rolf gave an excellent interpretation of the part along with Frau Schmidt (Jan Kennedy), Elsa Schrader (Teresa Buckley and Max Detweiler (Danny Cooper). The stage set was superb with changes well executed throughout the show giving the impression of watching the large screen rather than a stage.

vinegar hill, although smaller in size than those in austria, reverberated with equal sound as lorna Mahon and the rest of the cast of The sound of Music lifted the roof off the Colaiste Bride auditorium and got standing ovations for the entire 5 nights for their wonderful interpretation of the rodgers and hammerstein production. To say that Lorna Mahon did Julie Andrews better than Julie Andrews would be the truth and I’ll warrant if one actually closed one’s eyes it would be difficult to decipher which was which. Lorna was expertly cast by Director extraordinaire Ray Quigley and gave a truly remarkable performance as Maria – the singing novice who leaves the Abbey to take up position as Governess to the Von Trapp Family and ends up falling for and marrying the patriotic, debonair Captain Von Trapp (Anthony Jones) against the backdrop of Nazi Germany’s takeover of Austria. Lorna in the role of Maria didn’t need to prove her-

The Wexford Scene Michelle Dooley Mahon has the attention span of a flea. This has manifested throughout her life in an abundance of appointments, abodes and amours. Born in Wexford in Aul God’s time (when people still stepped off paths for priests) – she has variously been employed as a gynaecological receptionist / breakfast chef / au pair / pub landlady / tourist information officer / hostel warden / café owner / ship’s stewardess / film production assistant and hotel manager. She appears to have forgotten the remainder. She is an introverted socialite and conducts her assault on humanity through her facebook posts (http://facebook.com/michelle.d.mahon) and a Blogger account (Shellakeypookey@blogspot.com), and is the admin on the Facebook page she created to document the progression of Alzheimers in her beloved mother, Siobhan (“Alzheimer Association of Ireland”).

“Cousin Bill has had more lineups than a Mexican Firing squad” says the impossibly charismatic lead singer ian Moloney when i talked to him on a bright april afternoon. he is in Gothenburg, sweden and i am in the attic in wexford listening to the hailstones on the roof. Mocha as he is affectionately known to all and sundry, is a larger than life personality, quick witted and spontaneous, prone to bursts of infectious laughter and an old friend. He has a voice that can lift the roof off a building and frequently has. I have a memory of him standing on a table in The Bohemian Girl pub, with the shirt plastered to his back and the veins bulging in his neck, as he hypnotised the throng of

heaving fans prior to his departure to London in the early 90’s. Ian (Mocha) Moloney has always been making music. The eldest of 9 children he grew up in the narrow rainy streets of Wexford – cutting his teeth and serving his time playing local pubs and building up a reputation as an amazing vocalist. Vanity – The House that Hate Built – Turn on the Spotlight were released as singles, and the crowds sang every line. He also has a legion of fans and supporters who are drawn to his extrovert personality as he is indeed the Pied Piper of People. “The name ‘Cousin Bill’ came about because we were finalists in the Bacardi/Hot Press Awards in 1996 (which they subsequently won) and we had no name, Cousin Bill was the name of a song I had

written and Bryan (Barnes) suggested it” says Mocha over the cries of his 8-month-old daughter. He is besotted with her. Despite his status as a new Father, and a punishing round of gigs all over Europe, they have finally managed to record an album, their first. Of course they have called it F1RST. “The Cd was recorded in a Tele-Sales office”. (There is laughter on both ends of the phone, as no doubt there also was in the office.) “The boys are all pre-historic rock monsters and Raimo was really into it” says Mocha. “I had always been enjoying the music but knew we’d never be millionaires at this game – we had been playing covers at gigs and started to introduce our own original pieces and they

ward to coming home and playing and introducing the Swedish boys (Raimo and Stefan) to Ireland as it will be their first time visiting too.” First baby, First album, F1RST class. Raimo Rommedahl, Ian M o c h a M o l o n e y, G r a y Hawthorne, and Stefan Estulf.

went down very well, I am totally disillusioned with the formulaic music scene at the moment, the likes of X Factor, Britain’s Got Talent, The Voice, complete and utter waffle, and had given up on radio for the last 20 years. I get my new music from Uncut magazine and reviews by friends. There is no soul in the music that is packaged and presented for young people and I think an Irish audience is more in tune with music, they are smarter than most.” The album itself is tight and punchy and the trademark voice is holding up well. The songs are diverse and multi-dimensional with soaring chords and trademark riffs. There is anger and angst and awareness dawning in tracks like “Maybe it’s because”, “Swimming” and “Back of Your Love”. “I am really looking for-

ROAD TRIP

little Thomasina has always loved to take his family out for "Mystery Drives". The day would start early and with much promise. Sun splitting the stones in the Square with Paddy Byrne whitewashing the aformentioned in anticipation of the Corpus Christi procession. Thomasina standing whistling at the raised boot of whatever car he was driving at the time. He has always been a petrol head and believed in the old adage that it is better to be looking at it than looking for it. I remember the cars now from their registration plates. 53 EYI – A Blue Hillman Hunter. 695 UZO – A Navy Ford Fiesta. VZR 211 – A luminous Yellow Renault 4. AND way too many more to mention. He probably spent the night planning these sudden trips but conveniently never mentioned them. Least of all to his wife. The first she would know was when he tipped her the nod to get the flasks out and to make about a thousand salad sandwiches. (Or maybe it just felt like that buttering the bread long before the days of "spreadable" butter). Unbeknownst to her (or us) he would have been scavenging around upstairs for a motley assortment of pyjamas and nighties flung around warm bedrooms, while we were busy chopping spring onions and soft tomatoes and shelling eggs. And sending someone to Hughie Moores for salad cream and sliced pans. (The wrappers being immediately re-filled with the quartered sandwiches.) Then for the Coup-de-Grace. Alongside mismatched bedwear, bottoms with no "fork" in them, tops that were only "fit for dusters" and an eclectic bunch of toothbrushes (the first to his hand – whether they be ancient and used for scouring tiles or the dog’s matted arse) were wrapped in a Dunnes Stores plastic bag and hidden under the spare wheel, along with buckets and spades, and a bulging packet of LUG worm! Yes, worms. Dear reader, I ask you to picture the scene if you will. A packed car in the baking heat with windbreakers, windcheaters, wet weather gear, tartan rugs, tents, poles, sleeping bags, fishing rods, unruly children, with a unique aroma of eggs, onions, and bait and allow you to draw your own conclusions. Of course I got sick. I have spent my life getting sick out of car windows and shouting "Pull over, pull over" to

no avail. Thomasina would check my pallor in the rearview mirror till it turned from white to lime and then skew to a skidding stop on the grass verge. Where of course I would be fine as the motion had stopped and I could bend over retching and inhaling lungfuls of fresh sea air instead of worms, onions, and my brothers feet. “I told you I was sick!!” Did I mention we used to fight in the back seat? "God, give me strength" Thomasina would cry foaming at the mouth while Siobhan calmly advised him to mind his blood pressure AND the road. Because we were wearing shorts and the leather seats were scorching we did not want to be pressed up against each other. Or "Hawing" on each other. "If I get BACK to yee", he would shout flailing his left arm into the gap between the seats and inadvertently clout the bare leg of the wrong child. (I have called my parents Little Thomasina and Siobhan since I was a small child. They have called each other "Mammy" and "Dad" since ditto.) Interestingly, I only stopped being "car sick" when I got a job as a chef on a ship – which is a whole nother story – as the Bishop said to the actress. These trips were often and usually to beaches – where on inclement days we would sit on a rug in our coats and hats and listen to the match from the open door of the car and watch people reading newspapers with the condensation trickling down the windshield – but sometimes further afield where the light would be growing dim as we pulled into some far flung town looking for a B&B, where we would be disgraced marching down the corridor to the communal bathroom at midnight. Back in those days Irish children were as welcome in pubs as the flowers of May and spent the night trickacting around pool tables and scourging large bottles of TK Red Lemonade (free on the bar as a mixer) or cokes with pub crisps and bars of plain in a fog of smoke, country music, and diddly eye sessions. As I sit typing this to the strains of Verdi's "Aida" from the New York Met live on Lyric fm, I am not present here. In my mind I have gone to Killorglin, or Kinvara, or Kinsale and a purple sunset and the smell of fish and chips from the pier is masking the smell of the mulled wine candles, and the smiles of my youthful parents grow ever fonder with recall. – M.D.M.

Wilma and the Album on a biting bitter day when the wind would shave you, i first put my hands on the book. it was lying abandoned in a box of bric a brac at a market stall. The leather cover with the white birds in flight and the turned up corners attracted me like a moth to a flame. i am the keeper of tiny things, and i carry home with me the detritus that i accumulate on any given day and am loth to throw even these scraps out. They find space in this madhouse and lie accumulating dust and fluff all over the heaving shelves. It is a photograph album. The contents are shocking. Dated and signed by the owner in delicate penmanship, it has taken sixty years to arrive at my door. This faded battered album has been travelling since long before I was born. It has crossed and re-crossed the Atlantic Ocean, sweltered in the heat of Alabama, before ending up lying open to the elements in an easterly wind blowing in from the sea in a small Irish town. The stall holder is shocked when I show her the images contained therein. “But where did you get it?” I enquire. She is evasive and it dawns that this is a job lot of possessions left behind from a house clearance, or donated to a charity, or rescued from the back of a skip. She is too embarrassed to charge me when she sees what it contains. I tell her I will write about it. It is an Orphanage. The lady who owned it has thoughtfully catalogued the

images of the children and the Arch-Bishop (her brother) and has dated the sad fading photographs that look distinctly American – not least because they are in colour, but also because they have that “Yank” look about them. The smiling blonde boys with the crew cuts waiting in line for Santa, the little girls with ringlets and ribbons standing with the priest, the masked faces at a long table of carved pumpkins at a Halloween party looking surreal and bizarre.

convent. We used to play in “The Nuns Walk” a fenced off garden with a lane attached, which some kids used as a short cut to school, and the more adventurous older ones (with the eager college boarders) for a bit of a coort. In my mind’s eye I see the silhouette of a fire escape blocked against the evening sun. I sat beside one of the girls from there for a number of lessons. She wore a navy pleated pinafore and pale blue blouse, summer and winter. There was

They look well, these children. They are wearing nice clothes – shorts and sandals for the boys, the girls in printed gingham and calico. Their smiles are unforced and genuine. There is only the merest whiff of weirdness about them. When I was a small girl at school, the Sisters of Mercy ran an orphanage attached to the

a faint smell of head off her, a staleness that was evident to me, even then as young as I was. I would watch her and notice her bitten red finger nails and the way she wolfed down the small bottle of lukewarm milk and jam roll we would be given daily, lining up at break-time in a cloakroom that smelt of damp coats and coal tar soap. I secretly envied the

fact that she did not have to stay behind for piano lessons with a nun who would bring a stick crashing down on tentative fingers as we practised for the Arklow Music Festival. The stick was nicknamed Harry by its owner. The child was christened Wilma by hers. Many times I have thought of Wilma, and where she ended up. She just stopped coming. We were too busy in the yard skipping a massive rope chanting… ”Vote, Vote, Vote for De – Valera” as we tried not to trip when it was our turn, to take much notice. Children are adaptable and childhood is the only part of one’s life not impacted on by one’s childhood. Was she adopted? Did she find employment in a laundry that has become infamous and synonymous with unspeakable cruelty inflicted on the innocent? I see her presence in every photo of this book, the hope and optimism shining out of every face. She is the only person I have ever known with her name, and in her honour – way back when – I christened a doll with a crushable face the same. I have never drunk milk. – M.D.M.

Very active Trade & Tourism Expo anne doyle was in sparkling form as she opened the active retirement Trade & Tourism show at whites hotel on Tuesday 9th april and delighted the massive audience with a rousing verse of The Boys of wexford. True professional that she is and not at all fazed by a slight gap in proceedings, Anne treated everyone to a bit of light hearted singing encouraging all to join in with her which they duly did. That lady should have been a politician – as she pressed the flesh and had a couple of words for everyone making all feel that they know her well. I don’t know how she does it after all she’s supposed to be retired but seems to be working harder than ever for her native heath as a Wexford Ambassador. And what a job she is doing – full compliments to her she has certainly answered her County’s Call. The Trade & Tourism Show was a huge success and well done Active Retirement as it had to be a great boost for Wexford town. There were over 85 exhibition stands encompassing everything from health, music, dance, gifts, food, arts, crafts, and travel

with one whole section given over to Northern Ireland and the many places of interest to visit there. National President of Active Retirement Mai Quaid she that she was delighted with the response from both exhibitors and the general public to the show and she complimented all who had worked so long and hard putting it together. The handsome and tanned Kevin Dundon, award winning Irish celebrity Chef and Proprietor of the Dunbrody Country House Hotel was on hand to give a cookery demo with crowds queuing early for a coveted position. You could

have your cholesterol tested at the Flora Pro-active Stand, or visit the Gardening Workshop to find out how to create a raised garden. Niall Hatch of Birdwatch Ireland gave people tips and techniques on how to attract birds into their gardens from planting and feeding to nesting and protecting. John Evoy of the Irish Mens Sheds Association was there to provide information on what Mens Sheds were about and how to go about setting up one in your local area. There were tips a plenty on healthy eating and nutrition as you age and Colleen Burke shared some powerful tips on how to

eliminate stress from our lives as she guided people through a deep relaxation session. For those who wanted a bit of mental stimulation Wexford’s Sarah Beth Watkins, author of Telling Life’s Tales, was there to show you how you can use your life experiences to write articles and books for print and publication and for those with nimble fingers there was a tapestry workshop given by the very talented and experienced Ros Tapestry skilled embroiders. Enniscorthy Tourism was well represented with the Battle of Vinegar Hill Re-enactment on screen and lots of hats and costumes and even weapons available for people to try adding to the fun of the occasion. There were Fashion Shows, Art Exhibitions, Clothes Stands and Jewellery Stands galore indeed there was something for everyone on offer on what was an amazing, uplifting and informative day out and well done to the organisers for creating such a positive and attractive event and for boosting Wexford’s tourism by staging it in the sunny South East – no better location! – Maria Nolan

Earth up potatoes as the plants develop. Put protective barrier around your carrots to thwart the dastardly carrot root fly. Regularly hoe weeds and mulch. Water plants if required. Caroline Kidd with the latest motoring news…

On Sunday May 12th, Wells House & Gardens, Ballyedmond, Gorey, will be hosting their first ever classic car show. A selection of vintage cars and modern classics will line the avenue of the house. The event is open to visitors from 10.30am and admission is €6 per car.

nEW CITroEn Mpv on ThE WaY Citroen have released the first pictures of the new C4 Picasso, arriving here in the summer. The five-seater MPV has a sharper, more contemporary look compared to the outgoing model. Thanks to a new design platform the inside is more spacious than the current model, but still retains a compact exterior. The interior of the new C4 Picasso is light and airy owing to the panoramic windscreen and large glass roof. The dash has been restyled and gets a 7inch touch screen controlling all the in-car functions such as dual-zone air conditioning, navigation, audio, telephone and driving aids. A 12-inch HD screen displays essential driving information and can be configured by the

tial airbag problem affecting some Toyota, Honda, Nissan and Mazda models made between 2000 and 2004. The faulty airbags were manufactured by a Japanese firm, Takata, and a total of 3.4 million cars are expected to be recalled worldwide. The concern surrounds the inflators in the airbag system, which could cause the airbag to deploy in an abnormal fashion in the event of a crash. Five incidents of airbag malfunction have occurred in the US and Japan, but no injuries caused by the faulty airbags have been reported. Dealers will make contact with affected car owners over the next few months and they will carry out safety tests and any remedial work that needs to be done. Toyota models affected are Corolla, Yaris and Avensis models made between November 2000 and March 2004. Nissan will be recalling Almera, Navara, Pathfinder, Patrol, Terrano, Tino and X-Trail models made between 2000 and 2003, and Mazda will be recalling Mazda6 models made in 2002 and 2003. Civic, Jazz and CRV models from Honda dating back to 2001 and 2002 will be recalled. n

All about ADAM When you think of a German car, opel tends not to be the first brand that comes to mind. audi, volkswagen, BMW and Mercedes-Benz are brands that are famous for their German engineering and the prestige, and price, that goes with it. But opel tends to get left out of the party. over the last few years, opel have begun rectifying this with their “Wir leben autos” advertising campaign. opel is clearly positioning itself as the German car but without the premium price tag. And the good news is that from the driver’s seat, the new

Opel ADAM does indeed feel like a well-built German hatchback. From the minute you sit into the car you are presented with a smart, contemporary looking cabin that feels well screwed together. The front seats are comfortable, and the driving position is excellent, with plenty of headroom and good visibility all round. The Opel ADAM is a small car but from the driver’s seat it doesn’t feel cramped. The same can’t be said for the rear, but for the driver and front passenger there is no better place to be. For a small “city” car the

Opel ADAM JAM interior. © GM Company.

ADAM is a competent performer when you get it out of town and onto the motorway. There is ample power from the 1.4-litre 100bhp petrol engine for a car this size, but the revs are quite high at motorway speeds, running at about 3500rpm. On country roads, the steering is solid and substantial and the car resists body roll well when cornering. In town, the car really is a joy; not just for its small, compact proportions, but for its enthusiasm in the lower gears when it’s time to start off again at the traffic lights. First impressions of the car are very good. The new ADAM has a sporty, muscular, squat look about it and it’s bound to draw attention to itself. The model I tested was finished in “Pump Up the Blue” metallic paint with a white roof and door mirrors. The 18-inch “Twister” alloys added to my car looked great but were a little unforgiving over the bumps and ruts around town and on some smaller country roads. However, if you can sacrifice that for the edge they

give the car that’s fine; otherwise there are 16-inch alloys as standard on the JAM model which may make for a more comfortable ride. The beauty of the ADAM is that there are endless options for customisation and this will be a huge selling point for the car. There are some quirky touches to the ADAM that won’t be to all tastes but they could be the real showstopper for you and your passengers. The multi-coloured ambient lighting in the door pockets, centre storage space and front passenger footwell is a very cool feature which can be added for €100. For an extra €280 you can add an illuminated headliner of 64 LED lights to give a starry night

effect to the roof of the car. There are three spec levels for the new ADAM: JAM, GLAM and SLAM. Opel says that there is no real hierarchy amongst these trim levels. Instead, a bit like the Spice Girls, they all have different personalities. The JAM is the fun one, the GLAM is the sophisticated one and SLAM is the sporty one. Standard equipment on the new ADAM includes air conditioning, Bluetooth connectivity, daytime running lights, CD player with USB facility and aux-in socket, cruise control, trip computer, ESP, and six airbags for safety. For an extra €350 you can add the IntelliLink system, an all-inone multimedia system that

17

allows you to control your music, photos, phone, videos and apps on a 7-inch colour touchscreen on the dash. The Opel ADAM has its shortcomings, like the cramped rear seating and the tiny boot. But in the right colour and with the right options fitted it’s got presence and charisma in bucket loads. It will need it; the ADAM is entering a highly competitive market against more established rivals like the Citroen DS3, Fiat 500 and MINI hatchback. The new ADAM should give an added boost to Opel’s image as a brand which can produce exciting and stylish cars, not just practical saloons and hatchbacks. Think of the ADAM as the Opel Corsa’s funky little brother. The Confusing World of Motoring Jargon do you know your Esp from your Bhp? This month Caroline Kidd tries to make sense of motoring jargon. The motoring industry loves acronyms. Sometimes it can be difficult to navigate through a car brochure or motoring review without coming across a few that leave you scratching your head. What do they stand for? We look at some of the most popular motoring acronyms this month. saFETY New cars are safer than ever but there is a car safety language all of its own. aBs, TCs and Esp are all features that have made our cars safer. aBs (Anti-lock Braking System) is activated when you have to brake suddenly and sharply, and you will know it has been activated by the rapid pulsating you will feel on the sole of your foot coming from the brake pedal. The system stops your wheels from locking allowing you to steer rather than skid. When TCs (Traction Control System) is fitted to your car it reduces the engine power going to the driven wheels to stop them from losing grip when you accel-

erate on a slippery surface. Esp (Electronic Stability Programme) uses elements of both aBs and TCs to effectively keep the car on the straight and narrow. The job of Esp is to maintain the trajectory of the car as the driver intended. So if for example you take a corner too fast or make an abrupt emergency manouvre, the Esp will detect the warning signs and selectively apply the brakes or reduce power to the wheels. undEr ThE BonnET The engine is the heart of the car with its own confusing batch of terms to go with it. First of all do you know how many horses are under there? Bhp is brake horse power and is a measure of the power of your engine. The higher the value, the more power your engine has. CC (Cubic Centimetres) is a measure of the volume of the engine. If the engine is the heart of the car then the ECu (Electronic Control Unit) is the electronic brain of your car. It receives data from sensors and uses this data to supply the engine with the correct amount of fuel, spark and timing to run properly.

ModELs and BodYsTYLEs It’s not just the technology in our cars that gets fancy names; the proliferation of new car models over the last few years has meant that a few more acronyms have been added, like the terms suv and Mpv. SUV (Sports Utility Vehicle) is a leisure off-roader like a Toyota RAV4, Honda CR-V or Range Rover Evoque. The selling points of these cars are lots of interior space, high driving position, and a combination of car-like handling and 4x4 utility (if fitted). Mpv (Multi-Purpose Vehicle) is a large, van-like car with usually five or seven seats like the Renault Espace, SEAT Alhambra or Ford S-Max. The focus is on space and practicality and they are aimed at families. EnTErTaInMEnT ICE (In-Car Entertainment) describes the gadgets and gizmos which make spending time in your car more comfortable and enjoyable. In-car entertainment includes DVD players, stereo systems, handsfree phone kits, satellite navigation devices and even video consoles that can be installed in your car. n

Local GAA to battle against suicide rapparees/starlights and shamrocks Gaa Clubs are honoured to be involved in the darkness into Light 5K Fundraiser on saturday 11th May in aid of suicide prevention pro of the organising Committee Maria nolan said at the launch of the event at the Bailey on Friday 19th april. In her introduction Maria said that Wexford was a black spot for self inflicted deaths and second only to Tipperary North in suicide rate per head of population. An horrific statistic especially in these times of recession and cut backs, therefore she said it is imperative for clubs and communities to come together and do what

they can to help arrest the spread of suicide in our county. As GAA Clubs, Maria went on to say, who are dealing in the main with young people, particularly young men who seem to be in the high risk category, the onus is on us to look out for not just their physical well being but their mental health as well and the GAA were delighted with this opportunity to do what it could to help stop the increase in suicide in our local areas. Maria had a very warm welcome for Minister Paul Kehoe, Chairman of the Town Council Keith Doyle, Town Clerk David Minogue and Town Development Officer Mairead

L-R: Rod Guiney, Catherine O’Dwyer (Electric Ireland), Joan Freeman (Pieta House), and Dave Guiney (County Coaching Officer). Pic: Maria Nolan.

Linneen, along with members of the GAA – Dave Guiney, County Coaching Officer, Rachel Hogan, County Camogie Secretary, Noel Wilson, Camogie Development Officer, Tony Breen from the County Handball Association and members of the Garda Siochana and all in attendance who had taken time out from their busy schedules to show support for this really worthy cause. Maria said that there were apologies from Liam Griffin, Adrian Fenlon, Adam Nolan and County GAA Chairman Diarmuid Devereux who were unable to attend the launch but who fully supported the event and hoped to be available to do the walk on 11th May. Catherine O’Dwyer of Electric Ireland said how delighted they were to be in a position to provide sponsorship of this wonderful event and Founder of Pieta House Psychologist Joan Freeman said that she was thrilled with the response from the GAA both nationally and from the two Enniscorthy Clubs – Rapparees/ Starlights and Shamrocks. Joan showed a poignant presentation moving all present and she asked them to support the

Darkness into Light Walk and the Mind our Men Campaign as she profusely thanked the E n n i s c o r t h y O rg a n i s i n g Committee for the tremendous work they were doing on behalf of Pieta House. Minister Paul Kehoe spoke sincerely about the loss of his good friend and cabinet colleague Sean McEntee and promised to there on 11th May unless away on Government business. And Chairman of the Council Keith Doyle spoke from the heart and said that he would be walking on 11th May with the Marshalstown town club in remembrance of a deceased club member. Maria wrapped up proceedings by thanking the Organising Committee of Aoife O’Connor, John Hendrick, Aine Gahan, Seamus Wallace and Tom Boland and she had a special mention for Dan Morrissey and The Bailey for their very generous sponsorship of the delicious food for the launch. Registration can be done online or at Bellefield and Shamrocks GAA Clubs on Thursday 25th April from 79pm and again on Thursday 2nd May, or at 3.30am on the morning of the 11th. n

Education news "The unequivocal rejection of the Croke park II agreement by the teaching unions is a massive vote of no confidence in Minister howlin" says a local teacher and sinn Féin spokesperson, Fionntán Ó súilleabháin. He continued: “I am not surprised that members of the INTO and other teacher unions rejected t h e C ro k e P a r k I I Agreement which, if implemented, would have resulted in further punitive cuts to teachers and schools. They did so because it was an unfair deal – bad for public sector workers and their families, bad for the public services on which we all Fionntán Ó Súilleabháin with depend and bad for the Sinn Féin T.D. Seán Crowe. domestic economy." "The bully boy tactics of Brendan Howlin have clearly failed. As a former Wexford INTO member, he needs to be forced to radically rethink the imposition of austerity measures which are decimating the education budget. “Tackling excessive pay at the top of the public sector, introducing a third rate of tax on incomes above one hundred thousand euro and collecting a wealth tax are options for the minister. These alternatives would raise the revenue the government needs in a way that is fair and that would help our economic recovery.” Meanwhile local FF Td, John Browne has said that any attempt to force the amalgamation of small schools in Co. Wexford must be resisted. “It has been clear for some time that the Education Minister Ruairí Quinn has an agenda to force the amalgamation of small rural schools. My fear is that this will result in a number of small schools in Wexford being forced to close, and some communities will inevitably lose their local school entirely,” said Deputy Browne. “There are now fears that more than 1,000 schools across the country with under 80 pupils or 3 teachers may face closure. This issue is causing great fear and distress among parents, children and teachers in small rural schools right across the region. I have spoken to many local teachers and parents who are genuinely fearful that their school will soon be forced to close and amalgamate with a larger school in another community. “I am urging the Government to clear up this matter once and for all.”

Donal meets Parky by Donal Cullen parky and me, our two meetings, the book signing and Band on the Run with paul McCartney. But first this… Michael Parkinson was born in a pit village in Yorkshire. He lived on the back row of the local cinema. He had a good upbringing. He dreamed of playing cricket for England but the dream was short. Michael decided it was better to interview them or anybody else worth interviewing. Later he presented on radio and on TV. Now living in Berkshire, Michael says he wants the world to know he and Paul McCartney go way back. Well I know Michael goes back to Paul’s Band on the Run album

because he’s on the cover. So now to me and Parky the man. Let me tell it as it happened. It’s a cold day in Dublin. My feet are freezing, my fingers are numb. In my left hand is a book and in my right hand is an LP and in my chest is a fast beating organ – my heart, for in the coming minutes I’m meeting a fine, handsome gentleman of epic standards. Maybe I’m meeting my past because I’ve watched him on TV and knew of his association with the ex-Beatles in particular Sir Paul. I meet Michael and the first thing he says – “Ah, Band on the Run”. He shakes my hand. What will I do with the LP? I say, “It’s mine, you can’t

have it.” Parkinson smiles, “I already have my own.” So I say, “I just want you to sign it.” So we spend about five minutes talking about the album and who’s on the cover. There’s Paul and Linda McCartney, Denny Laine, John Conteh, Kenny Lynch, James Coburn, Clement Freud, Christopher Lee and Michael Parkinson. A great collection of people. Michael and I shoot the breeze about the LP but I had a book called Parky which he signed as well. It says, “To Donal, Michael Parkinson”. I must say Parkinson is very warm and welcoming and has time for everybody – that was my impression of

him. He kept telling me about the people on the cover. I could not believe I was meeting the man who has met everybody, so I can say that the six degrees of separation is great. Standing beside Parkinson puts me two steps away from meeting every celeb on the planet – wow! For me, very humbling. Later on I meet Parkinson again. We were together out on Grafton Street in Dublin and there was a photoshoot. The accompanying pic is a result, that’s him with my coat and scarf. Ha, ha! My memory of Parky is a fond one. What a gentleman. My stuff signed, my pics, and a glorious handshake. Thanks Michael. n

Help for those struggling with debt? Minister paul Kehoe Td has said the launch of Insolvency service Ireland’s public information campaign will allow those who are struggling with the burden of debt to find a way out of their financial difficulties. “Many people in Co. Wexford, and right across Ireland, feel crippled under the weight of debts that were acquired during the boom. For these people, the burden is overwhelming and the cause of considerable stress in their everyday lives. With this in mind, the Government advanced legislation at the end of last year to set the wheel in motion to help people to get on top of their debts, find a way out and to begin again to play a role in our economic recovery.”

“…Insolvency Service Ireland (ISI) launched a public information campaign to enable people to find the best way of dealing with their debts, depending on their situation”. The website www.isi.gov.ie is now live and offers a wealth of information about debt resolution measures for dealing with both secured and unsecured debt. Minister Kehoe continued: “ISI also set out guidelines on what can be determined as reasonable standards of living and reasonable living expenses which should act as a defensive shield for debtors to ensure that the financial institutions they are dealing with are not unreasonable in their demands. “People who are in genuine distress over their finan-

cial situation should be afforded every opportunity to work through their debt with dignity. The guidelines are not designed to micro-manage people’s lifestyles or expenses by the Insolvency Service or creditors. Instead they are intended as a baseline for negotiation and discussion and are intended to be flexible and to help both sides to come to a satisfactory resolution. “It is hoped that from the end of June, ISI will be in a position to begin accepting applications for new debt solutions. From May, it is expected that Personal Insolvency Practitioners (PIPs), whose job it will be to act as mediators between debtors and creditors, will begin being authorised. This gives people a real time-

line regarding a roadmap to dealing with their debts. “It must be remembered that the three debt resolution measures set out by the ISI; Debt Relief Notices, Debt Settlement Arrangements or Personal Insolvency Arrangements, are voluntary arrangements undertaken by both sides. The aim is to come to an agreement that is acceptable to all. Continuing to ignore the plight of those who are in everyday anguish over their debts is not an option. By engaging in this new process, banks will be working towards meeting Central Bank targets on mortgage arrears and those in debt will be given a second chance and hope for a happier future that is not utterly mired in debt”.n

EnnIsCorThY BusInEss assoCIaTIon – Your ToWn nEEds You! The Slaney News has been a regular attender at Enniscorthy Business Association meetings over the last year and we have been highly impressed with the Association’s initiatives to breathe new life back into the commercial centre of Enniscorthy. In the coming months we are likely to see a Town Voucher Scheme, a new website, formal cooperation with the Tidy Towns Committee, a fresh look at the OPW’s flood relief plans, and even a fashion show (ladies only!). Like most committees the hard graft is being done by a small committee including Dermot Kavanagh of Smyths Arro, Court Street butcher Jimmy Doyle and Pauline Maguire of MAD/Toffee & Thyme. The Association needs more volunteers to help transform the commercial life of the town. At the most recent meeting in April Mark Kavanagh of Hilltop Dry Cleaners, Mervyn Cooney of Cooney’s Bakery and photographer Ger Carty were among those who positively engaged with the Association and took on specific tasks. But more people are needed to successfully drive the initiative forward so everybody involved in the commercial life of Enniscorthy is encouraged to attend the next meeting on 21st May. Hope to see you there! n

Those of you who missed it - should be sorry - it was a most excellent evening of musical entertainment and composition. Acoustics were perfect in the candlelit lounge and the stage set was extremely effective with soft hues and delicate lighting adding to the Speak Easy, Performing Arts Club style atmosphere that is a total new departure for Bellefield but worked really well there thanks to the creativity of both Matt and Brendan. And all free to boot – now beat that on a Thursday night. The first hour was very much local with our own club member Pa Doyle kicking off with 3 lovely songs that he penned himself, followed by Michael Cooney and then a beautiful double act of father and daughter Megan Kate Doolan with her dad Alan talent just seems to ooze from

PET aPProVEd

VET DIARY FOR MAY

with the Moyne Veterinary Clinic In each issue the Moyne Veterinary Clinic deals with various issues relating to pets. In this issue they look at what we feed our pets. The food that we feed our animals is a huge factor in their overall health. The French have a saying: “We dig our graves with our teeth.” For us it's usually a conscious decision as to what we eat. For our canine and feline friends, it's usually whatever we plonk in front of them. The better dog and cat foods will have a much higher grade of protein, carbohydrate and fibre levels but the real difference is the digestability of the food. The best foods have the greatest digestability. By this we mean that whatever they eat is absorbed into the bloodstream from the gut. If the food is of poor quality, it is only partially digested and so over time begins to clog the system. The liver gets sluggish, the blood carries less oxygen so everything begins to suffer as a result. The coat can be dull, skin can become infected, joints stiffen and the life force slowly ebbs. We pawn this off as 'ageing' but with a little better care of what we are putting into our wonderful, hairy friends' bowls, they can lead a much more active and vibrant life. To see the difference ask us about the better foods and how they can bring back the spark in your best friend.

'Chantelle'… I'd arrived, what an adventure this was going to be. I lay in my cocoon (unsure of how I should proceed). The debris of my progress in the last few minutes lay around my trembling body. I felt that something more existed, and indeed it did… I became aware of a strong tongue licking the remains of my first engulfing coat, from off my now urging/insistent body. A musky scent filled my (up till then) unused nostrils and I tried to turn my body in the direction that this wonderful aroma was coming to me from. Other bodies lay in the way of my progression, bodies which I later came to know were those of my brothers and sisters. Blindly and completely dependent on my sense of smell I fought for what I knew was a result which would become my first victory. I pushed and rolled, struggled along the body from which the scent originated and as minutes passed I achieved success. With my Mother's milk filling my unaccustomed belly, contentedly I fell asleep. Times pass, the weeks have slipped away. Things have been lived through and loved. I have come to understand that I am a part of a family. I have five brothers and five sisters. For the first few weeks of life the world was made up entirely of a small room and eleven bodies, all appearing to want the same sort of things. From the start milk was the order of the day. Mummy was the central focus for all our attention. Always, whilst awake we would move along her body to the source of our continued existence

and sucking frantically we would satisfy our ever demanding bellies. Contentedly each one of us would just lie exhausted and satisfied within our own self contented world. After about ten days or so, I found that I was not so dependent on one of the only senses which I had. Far from being pushed aside my sense of smell became as familiar to me as something which was to become an essential feature of growing life. For ten days I was content to be aware of the sensation of something else around me. I recognized the glorious and welcome feel of my mother's tongue and indeed her muzzle directing me in a given direction. But slowly and with continuing clarity I achieved sight. At first, as I exercised my eyelids, I was aware of a sort of fog. Then things began to take shape. I joined the image of a tongue descending down towards me with the identity of my mum. The numerous bodies around me, I knew as my brothers and sisters. The one thing which I formed no opinion on was that every so often, the corner of our shelter achieved a brightness and a hand would reach in and clutch one of us. Far from the sense of security which my mother's tongue had brought about, this could have been so very different. Mum wanting to move any (or all) of us to somewhere more convenient for herself, either she would hooch us along the ground with her muzzle, or seeking a more involved movement, would clasp any of us by the scruff of

21

our fluffy necks in her powerful mouth, to place us in her selected location. However this was entirely different, brightness would pervade our environment and amid either a solemn silence or incessant giggling a hand of differing proportions would reach into where we were and bodily holding us in an unfamiliar way would whirl us through the air in an attempt to seek an examination. These 'intruders' were humans and throughout my life humans have, directly or indirectly, been responsible for some very ill advised opinions/behaviour. They have also been involved amid some of my most precious memories / responsibilities. L o o k , I ' m a P y re n e a n Mountain Dog. One of the largest breed of dogs that exist today. My reputation is initially one of strength and then it's given out that I (my breed) is known for its docility. We are extremely loyal (to a deserving subject) and intelligent. But in order for all of these characteristics to be displayed we must slot into an understood position in society. We must be treated as dogs, not merely an extension of the family (a child). Yes there are similarities; both children and dogs can be trained. We become attached to familiar concepts and we both require feeding. Feeding; what a wonderful word, I could spend most of my life at it. It is the one activity that directs the attention of all dogs (children). Our primal, basic need is for food. I refer you back to my initial arrival where my first need was the satisfying of my immediate hunger pangs. I accept that suckling from my mother also brings about an immediate bonding between mother and offspring, but, let's be fair, food is food. To be continued… n

Faith Festival getting close The parishes of st aidan’s and st senan’s in Enniscorthy have joined together to organise their first ever Faith Festival. The Festival will take place in our diocese from 31st May to 2nd June 2013 and will be led by Fr. Billy swan and the Eucharistic Gathering Committee. The aim of the Eucharistic Gathering is to reach out to

everyone, not only in our own diocese, but further afield, and encourage them to join in this celebration of faith. As part of the Eucharistic Gathering people are invited to write a piece about ‘what mass means to me’ or ‘what faith means to me’. These testimonies can be anonymous if people wish and can b e dropped into the suggestion

box which is located at the back of the cathedral. Testimonies will be on display in the cathedral over the course of the festival weekend. We included the full programme in our last issue and in case of any late changes we plan to include the full programme again in our issue of 28th May. n

dog lICenCes I recently received the notice to inform me that the licence for my best friend was due a few weeks from the notification’s arrival in the post. Being the good citizen that I am and being a firm believer that if you have a dog the least you can do is have a licence I made my way immediately to the post office to arrange its renewal. However on my return to the Hill before I put it in the oul biscuit tin I decided to have a good look at it. To my horror I noticed that I had short changed myself by two weeks because of the format of the licence. These documents are designed in such a way that they show only a date of issue and state that the licence covers a twelve month period from that date. In other words there is no expiry date on the licence. Therefore it is important that when you are renewing your dog licence please note that it is actually a new licence and not a renewal of an existing one. Therefore only go to the post office after the expiry date on the existing licence so as not to cheat yourself out of a few weeks already paid for. By the way this is not the fault of the staff in the post office who must date the licence to reflect the day you actually pay the licence fee. n.C.T. WAITIng room Apart from having to get a dog licence this month I also had to venture out to the Old Dublin Road to the N.C.T. Centre to

have the old jalopy tested. While I waited patiently for the verdict, which thankfully was favourable, I racked my brains trying to figure out what did that room remind me of from my past life. As I looked at the tense, mainly male, faces sitting around me it suddenly struck me like a thunderbolt. In the old days fellows like me of a certain age, who are not new men, had to hang around a waiting room when our wives entered the labour ward to give birth. Sometimes we would wait patiently for hours on end until a nurse or midwife would come through a door, which us men were terrified to even look around, to give us the good news that all was well and that we had a new arrival. As I daydreamed about times past I heard my name called and the operative was suddenly at the hatch with my keys and certificate. I nearly slipped up and asked him was it a boy or girl. Thankfully I didn’t. eAsTenders, CorrIe, FAIr CITy eTC. Half the country is addicted to the soaps which seem to run for hours on end on our televisions. I suppose people could be hooked on something much more lethal and unfortunately many are. However my crib with these programmes is the type of storylines that continuously run through them which in my view are entirely unsuitable for showing at the early hour that soaps occupy. In fact if the same themes

View from the Hill A local contributor looks at life today in Enniscorthy and beyond.  ran through other programmes they would not be shown until after the watershed of 9pm in the evening. Between 7pm and 9pm children are usually up and about and with the best will in the world cannot be shielded from the type of stories which regularly feature. Personally, I am an old liberal and couldn’t care less what adults look at, provided its lawful. Surely though, it is essential that adults protect young impressionable minds from the more controversial storylines which seem to be commonplace. As the channels which carry them will not change the time slots for these very popular programmes this should present an opportunity for parents

to switch off their televisions, record these soaps for late night viewing, and actually spend the seven to nine time period with their children. This should be the solution to what I actually see as a problem. It must be borne in mind that the reason the soaps occupy such an early hour is that originally, say up to fifteen years ago, the storylines were harmless and suitable for such viewing hours. Sadly, however, we have moved on and in this case not for the better. FIrsT ImpressIons First impressions are most important in any walk of life. With that in mind it is vital that visitors arriving to any town

are impressed by what they immediately see on arrival. In Enniscorthy’s case it has to be said that those looking after the entrances to town are doing a great job. The floral and plant arrangements at the Bridge and Blackstoops are a credit to all from those who designed the layouts to those who maintain these areas. Compliments to all. AusTerITy Up to a couple of years ago the word austerity would have meant little to most of us. Regretably in recent times its meaning and indeed implication has become an everyday talking point. For a long time now it has been obvious to the man and woman in the street that the policy of austerity is not working. All we need do is look around us at the number of businesses which have closed down, the number of people who in turn have lost their jobs, the reductions in wages, pensions and social welfare all reducing the spending power of the population at large therefore leading to further closures and so on. We were continuously told by those in positions of authority that there was no other way. We had to suffer because the Troika was dictating the pace and paying our bills. Now, however, one of the architects of the austerity policy, a former member of the Troika has come out publicly and stated that this policy of austerity without stim-

ulus is wrong and not working. This is one of the guys who drew up the policy in the first place. Also our President Micheal D. Higgins goes out to the European Parliament and clearly warns all of Europe to be aware of the social consequences of the policy of austerity. Yet the extremely well paid politicians who lead us, who themselves are totally protected from the policy of austerity, make no comment whatever. Reminds me of the saying, “ There are none so blind as those who do not wish to see.” F.W. de Clerk What has the last white President of South Africa to teach us? Well see for yourself. F.W. de Clerk was the President of South Africa who did most to dismantle the brutal policy of apartheid and ordered the release of Nelson Mandela. Before de Clerk stood for parliament in 1973 he was a solicitor in a mixed practice in his home district. He lived in a beautiful house beside a river in an upmarket area of town. When he was elected to parliament he found that the salary and expenses were inadequate to maintain his large house and was forced to sell and downsize to a much more modest dwelling. That is public service at its best. Question. Can anyone think of any of our guys who had to downsize and reduce their standard of living after their election to the Dail? Just saying. n

❝ I came to VTOS, I was looking to get out of the house, because I was stuck looking at the walls, not working and looking after my children who were in school. Since I started the course in August 2011, it has been a bit overwhelming for me because I was home for so long. Since then I have gained more confidence, made new friends and now I feel I have a future ahead of me. I know I can achieve goals that I plan for myself. I am going to miss coming to VTOS in the mornings as it is a routine I have gotten used to. I will greatly miss the staff and students as they were all so warm and welcoming.❞ – ERICA JAMES.

WHAT OUR STUDENTS SAY…

❝ Before I started VTOS I had lost my job. I realised for me to get another job or to get on a course that I would need to better my English as I had little English. Since starting the course my English has rapidly improved, I can communicate better with people, I am able to engage in all subjects on the course and I can complete all my assignments and tasks given to me. The staff and students are so kind and helpful, and I wish to thank all the teachers who have helped me achieve an important goal in my life.❞ – HELEN LUO. ❝ I was delighted to be accepted onto the VTOS Course in August 2011. Through this course I have gained confidence, learned a range of new skills and made great friends. I am delighted with the range of subjects which I have learned over the years. These subjects include Computers, Photography, French, Maths, Drama and Healthy Lifestyles. I would highly recommend this course to anyone that’s interested in learning new skills, as every Teacher is dedicated to their job and students. It has a great experience for me to meet, interact and socialise with people again. This is a great opportunity for people to join and experience new subjects.❞ – MARY H.O’CONNOR.

Liz and Erica, front Helen and Mary.

❝ I was out of work for a while; I was stuck in a rut for a couple of years not really going out and meeting people. VTOS has helped me in so many ways by building my confidence with some of the subject’s e.g. drama, communications. I have met so many different nationalities and have made friends for life. The work experience module is great as I have tried an area of work which I hadn’t done before and I am hoping to further my studies in this area with a PLC course. I would highly recommend the VTOS to anyone. ❞ –LIZ KELLY.

Enniscorthy Golf Club notes… A little event occurred last weekend that won’t be marked with pomp and circumstance, in fact it may seem trivial to many but nevertheless will be a milestone in the long history of one of the town’s oldest recreational and sporting facilities. For over the long winter months a plan was taking shape to improve two existing greens, the 16th an 17th, at enniscorthy golf course. Established in 1907, the year that saw the French golfer Arnaud Massy win the British Championship Open, the first non-British golfer to do so since its founding in 1860, the local golf club in Enniscorthy has strived to provide the town and its members with a championship course that all could be proud and avail of. Golf, once thought to be the preserve of the professional, is now and has been for many years a facility to be enjoyed by all, especially families. Progressing from a 9-hole course in the late '80s to an 18hole designed by the renowned Eddie Hackett and nurtured by members and grounds-staff over the years, some now gone to their eternal reward, the course has matured into one of

There has never been a better time to take up the game of golf with membership fees remaining low and realistic. We w o u l d e s p e c i a l l y encourage young ladies to join our Junior Section. The game, popularised these days by names such as McIlroy, Tiger, Harrington and Lowry has attracted many young males to the sport and this is proven by the Juniors waiting list. We would love to hear from more parents who wish to enroll young ladies into the sport as the club has a strong ladies section offering training and guidance and its Junior Conveners adhere to the Code of Ethics and Good Practice for Children's Sport as issued by the Irish Sports Council and endorsed by the Golfing Union of Ireland (Gents GUI), The Irish Ladies Golfing Union and the PGA. Parents can be assured that the club is well run and offers a safe environment to play organised golf with coaching provided by the club’s resident Professional Stephen Fitzpatrick PGA. n

Many of the problems which exams bring to us can be either controlled or reduced by taking early action and putting some plans together before the pressure starts to take its toll.

Obviously a sense of preparedness is going to be a real factor in how much stress is felt – however even when study has been diligent some nervousness is inevitable and should not be a cause for concern. It is only when the level of this anxiety goes a little bit too high that performance suffers and of course this is what we don't want.

What's not commonly known is that when humans, and indeed animals, are under significant stress they effectively burn some nutrients at a rate of knots – therefore it is prudent to ensure an extra intake of these is provided to ensure the ability to function effectively, particularly the B and C vitamins are vital here as they have the unusual double role of energising as well as being calming. Ideally it would be good to start ahead of time with these, however it is never too late to make a difference. Other weapons to have to hand can be flower remedies to settle jangling nerves, magnesium to both calm the nerves and possibly help with getting a good night's sleep during this period which can really be vital when exams continue for days and weeks at a time.

As each individual is different we always like to make our recommendations based on their situation however hopefully these few hints at what is appropriate may serve as a guide to what can be safely offered to any prospective exam taker to enhance and support their efforts to achieving the required results.

SuccESSFul 65 roSES 11 acts and 3 hours of music raises funds for Cystic Fibrosis Co. Wexford Branch. To say there’s no talent in Enniscorthy these days then think again as the 5th annual 65 Roses concert was held in The Bailey on 19th April. Event organiser Joseph Doyle put on what he said was the best concert that Enniscorthy had put on in years. The night kicked off with country husband and wife duo Bandit. They got the 3 hour roller coaster ride into full swing. Next up was Phil O’ Donohoe Ivory who added blues type music to the concert. Then it was the turn of Catherine who had only started to play the guitar this year and was excellent. MC Joe Doyle then called up who he reckons is going be a star in the making, Yvonne Rooney, who sang two of her own songs and one other song. She was quickly followed by the roof shaking young Enniscorthy band Tensurspots who bought along Sooty and Sweep for a support act – they went down well. To bring the first half to a close was David O’Connor who sang his own song If Wishes Were Horses. Then it was the turn of Jamie and Sinead who introduced themselves as the

ham and eggers – they worked extremely well together. Then it was Sara Rooney who really was outstanding with her version of the Other Side of the World by KT Tuntstall and then, as Joe put it, she killed Ride On which he said was the best version he ever heard – what he meant by this was she really nailed this song, she sang it beautifully. The last act was Richie Freaney who sang a great selection of ballads. This concert raised €230 on the night which with the coffee morning bought in a total of €870. Joseph would like to thank Thomas Byrne for sound and lights, his mother Ann for manning the door and all the artists who took part, The Bailey a n d t h e C y s t i c F i b ro s i s Association of Ireland for all their help. Also Denis Redmond and Philomina Bowe for their help with the coffee morning. He would also like to thank his father John for giving him the use of his premises, Doyles the Duffry, for the coffee morning. Thanks also to the Slaney News, the Echo newspaper, the Guardian, South East Radio, McCauleys Chemists, James Quirke for video and photos, and Donal Cullen and Frank Corcoran. – Joseph doyle

silvertones, the enniscorthy based Choir for seniors, held their Agm on Friday the 19th April. T h e C h a i r m a n P e rc y Rothwell, welcomed all members and a minute’s silence was observed. He said that his first year as Chairman had been made very easy because of helpfulness and consideration of members and the strong basis laid down by his predecessor. He paid tribute to Sheelagh O’Leary who retired from the Committee this year and and thanked her for her dedication and hard work since 2009, when she and her husband Liam first founded the choir. He said that he never imagined Silvertones would be so successful. This can be seen from the various events and venues over the past twelve months, the Bealtaine Festival, proceeds from this concert were donated to the St. Vincent De Paul Society. A very enjoyable lunch in Monart Spa and Christmas lunch in The Bailey were social outings for the

choir. The choir performed at the opening of the Presentation Centre, and at the Hope Candle Ceremony. Carol singing in St. John’s and St. Senan’s hospitals before Christmas and also in St. Aidan’s Cathedral. The choir also performed “Songs of Praise for Eastertide” at a service in St. Mary’s Church of Ireland. He thanked Eithne Corrigan, Musical Director, for her help, dedication and patience and said that the success of the choir was in no small way due to her hard work. He also thanked Eanna McKenna, Accompanist, for stepping in on those special occasions. He said that Silvertones had a very busy year ahead and rehearsals will continue in Bellefield at 2.00pm each Friday. The new Committee will consist of: Percy Rothwell, Chairman, Margaret Hughes, Secretary, Iris Tector, Treasurer, Frank Arrigan, Librarian, Sheila Byrne, PRO, Nicholas Ryan, Tess Mannion and Pearse Colbert. n

Presentation tornadoed by Classical Twister Wow! Is the first exclamation that comes to mind when describing an evening of eclectic musical magic at the fabulous presentation Centre when slovak maestro Vladimir Jablokov brought his curious style of composition to a totally enthralled and captivated audience on saturday 20th April.

Taking us from Bach to the Beatles and from the Stones to Strauss he swept us along on a tornado of scintillating sound that is an unique musical experience that makes classical accessible to all. Vladimir’s Twist combines the beautiful classical melodies of the romantic era of the Strauss family with the slightly more modern

and spun round the stage completely on fire with talent. A brilliant musician who has been playing since he was 5 years old back in Bratislava, Vladimir came to Ireland in 2004 to escape from classical music and do something completely different. He found himself busking on Grafton Street for nearly 5 years and

Vladimir’s most unusual technique is a kind of dolly mixture or liquorice all sorts of the musical variety encompassing all forms as classical meets rock, meets jazz with a wee bit of Irish diddly I di thrown in for good measure and the most amazing thing is that it all works so wonderfully well. Or should I say Master Chef Vladimir blends it all expertly together creating a truly mouthwatering delight – that you can almost taste!

Moon Dance and All the Lonely People. Strauss’s Tritsch-Tratsch Polka and the Radetzky March exquisitely merge with Those Were the Days and some Fiddler on the Roof selections delighting the fascinated following. The somewhat eccentric and very enthusiastic virtuoso in a shirt and tie and two piece blue suit with converse footwear and almost afro hair style that bobbed and wiggled all over the place as he leaped

becoming very much part of the streetscape. Based on his busking experience Vladimir found that playing lighter music attracted a greater audience and it was out of this revelation that Classical Twist was born and its appeal has been phenomenal. Vlad and his group comprising 3 violins, 1 double bass, drums and piano have played the Opera House and the Wexford Spiegeltent and after the Presentation gig were heading to the O2 for 2

Working Towards  A Brighter Future A sentiment that, to be honest, most people would not be for getting behind, given the constant stream of economic woes, bad news and misery prevailing. Again it is left to the youth of the country to look forward and some of the regular youth goers in the local FDYS have participated in a fantastic artistic gallery. It was Youth Work Week during the last week in April and it was just one of the events taking place. There was a celebration for the people who took part on Saturday just gone. The pictures were great and there were some really top notch ideas being put onto paper. – Jamie Murphy
