WHERE CAN I PICK UP THE SLANEY NEWS?

Welcome to the February issue of Slaney News. Well done to Mary Bourke and Mark Kavanagh who are the main driving forces behind Enniscorthy’s new town voucher scheme. The initiative is a joint one between Enniscorthy Business Association and Enniscorthy Chamber, with the assistance of Enniscorthy Credit Union. Over 80 shops are participating making it easy for customers to buy gifts and services in the town thereby supporting local jobs and businesses. The list includes boutiques, hair salons, shoe shops, restaurants, hotels, menswear, pharmacies, jewellers, diy, dry cleaners and many more. In the run up to Christmas €25,500 worth of vouchers were purchased – a remarkable achievement. That’s €25,500 spent in Enniscorthy that otherwise may have been spent elsewhere (other towns, internet, etc). Let’s remember that these vouchers are available all year round and are ideal gifts for all occasions. They can be purchased in the local Credit Union, Hilltop Dry Cleaners, Frizelle O’Leary Solicitors and Byrne’s Bookshop.

You can keep up to date with developments during the month on our Slaney News Facebook page and on the new Enjoy Enniscorthy Facebook page. And don’t forget you can read our back issues online at: www.issuu.com/slaneynews/docs. – Frank Corcoran

Green shoots in Enniscorthy?

Out of Service

A media production group from Enniscorthy Vocational college, along with course director Liam Sharkey and South East Television, have created “out of Service”. in the group’s own words: “This is a 48 hour experiment where we live together with no technology or electricity. We will be faced with

several tough challenges throughout our stay. The challenges are top secret but range from lighting fires without matches to paranormal investigations. “The Panic Button will provide a way out if the temptation of technology becomes too much. The chatter box will provide us with a place

to describe our feelings to a camera. We h a v e c r e a t e d a Facebook and Twitter page as well as our very own blog. We are currently creating a ‘teaser trailer’ which will be released soon via YouTube. We guarantee that there will be twists, turns and trouble in our two-day stay that will keep our audience hooked. Cameras placed around the location will capture all the drama, which you will then be able to watch. Like us on Facebook: “Out of Service” and follow our Twitter page “@outofservice48”, also stay in touch with our blog “outofserviceproject.blogspot.ie”, where there will be regular updates and where the audience can influence what the secret challenges will be. The project will take place towards the end of February. The question will be answered ‘Can we live without technology for 48 hours?’ Lights Out!” Sounds like a most interesting social experiment. Best of luck to all involved. ■

is it a sign of better times to come? in our three years in existence the Slaney News has been fortunate to attract a huge range of advertisers representing every type of business – except one. So when we got a call from a building firm it immediately grabbed our attention! if builders are starting to advertise again then we had to find out more! We x f o rd L o w E n e rg y Homes is run by Dan and Mary Morrissey from Enniscorthy. While the building trade has been quiet in recent years Dan and Mary, along with Manager Brendan Robinson and staff, have been busy building up the hugely successful Bailey Cafe Bar in Enniscorthy which now boasts two functions rooms, as well as entensive restaurant and bar facilities. With the recent arrival of new Head Chef Paul McClelland the people of Enniscorthy can look forward to even more wonderful culinary creations in the future. But back to the building trade! The Morrisseys believe that the time is now right to re focus on their building business. They point to three factors in particular: ● The gradual turnaround in the country’s economy which has seen building work begin to take off again

in Dublin and with the ESRI forecasting GNP growth of 2.7% nationally this year the building trade is destined to take up again in Enniscorthy in the short to medium term. ● The government has introduced a very attractive scheme which effectively offers customers 13.5% off the cost of qualifying building works. The Home Renovations Incentive Scheme (HRI) provides for tax relief for homeowners by way of an Income Tax credit at 13.5% of qualifying expenditure on repair, renovation or improvement works carried out on the homeowner's main home by qualifying contractors. So, for example, if you pay €5,000 (before VAT) to a VAT registered and tax compliant builder for repair work, the tax man will give you back €5,000 x 13.5% = €675. ● The latest set of Building Regulations came out in 2 0 11 a n d t h e n e w l y amended Building Control Regulations will come into operation on 1 March 2014. These stringent regulations are a set of legal requirements for the design and construction of new buildings, extensions and mate-

rial alterations, and provide for the health, safety and welfare of people, conservation of fuel and energy, and access for people with disabilities. The new building regulations will ensure that all work carried out in future will have to meet higher standards. Wexford Low Energy Homes staff are well versed in these new regulations having attended a number of familiarisation and training courses. They can guarantee that all work will be in compliance so customers don’t have to worry about not being able to sell their homes or raise a mortgage, should they choose to do so in the future. The days of the cowboy builders may be numbered! With the added reassurance of being HomeBond Registered, Wexford Low Energy Homes is now offering their services to one and all: new build (residential & commercial), renovations, extensions, building maintenance, site development works, renewable energy upgrades, project management & consultancy, etc. And remember “no job is too small”! contact WLEH any time on 053-9237272 or 0876262434. ■

Crime Prevention Project at EVC

Wexford Youth visit Leinster House ime prevention cr C V E e th to ne do Well

In the Office of An Taoiseach from left to right: Liam Ryan, Dave Nowak (Chairman), Blair Kelly, Maeve Boland and Ciaran Allen (National Executive).

Wexford Young Fine gael attended a number of meetings in Leinster House on 22nd January with ministers, Tds and senators to discuss issues which are very important to the younger generation of ireland today, such as Youth Mental Health and Youth Unemployment.

In regards to a topic which hits closer to home, Wexford YFG lobbied for support for a South Eastern Technological University. They will also be meeting with other YFG branches in the country to bring this, and other regional issues, to the forefront of the national agenda.

Regarding the upcoming European and Local Elections, Chairman of Wexford YFG, Enniscorthy’s Dave Nowak, said: “With just a little under four months until polling day we have a lot of hard work ahead of us and we will do everything we can to fully support all Fine Gael local and European candidates.” ■

A Leaving certificate class in the innovative Enniscorthy Vocational college has just completed a major research project on crime, its character, its effects and solutions. The project involved students researching attitudes to crime and punishment locally and in the City of Dublin as well as individual research topics on the issue. The project also involved groupwork analysing the issue and interviewing a local member of An Garda Siochana. The project emphasised coming up with solutions to

the issue which formed the basis of a Class Manifesto on solutions to crime. Below is a list of some of their findings: cRiMES coMMiTTEd: Assault - Assault is a violent or an illegal attack on another person. Prevention: Increase the number of cameras on the streets of Enniscorthy. Road Traffic - A road traffic offence is breaking any law which is not in the rules of the ro a d e . g . d r i n k d r i v i n g . Prevention: Having the Garda Traffic Corps more often on our roads and speed vans in operation.

students!

Sexual offences – These can range from inappropriate touching to rape. It can also involve sexual harassment. Prevention: If a person commits a sexual offence, they can be placed on the Sexual Offences Register. Burglary - Breaking and entering into someone's home and taking goods belonging to that person. Prevention: Text Alert and Community Alert systems can help to prevent this sort of crime. It’s encouraging to see young people taking such an active interest in crime prevention. Well done to all involved with this impressive project. ■

TuRN cHROME INTO A YOuTubE POwERED MuSIc PLAYER

Tech Tip

While there are plenty of music streaming services out there, this one caught my eye just for being clever. Streamus is a chrome extension that turns your browser into a personalised jukebox using YouTube. Using YouTube for music is great because it's free, has pretty much every song out there, and it works everywhere. The problem is that it's pretty easy to accidentally close a tab in YouTube and it's not easy to queue up songs without creating an account. Streamus is an extension for Chrome that makes that all easy.

To commemorate 10 years in business and the opening of their extended premises on Millpark Road, there is a twoweek sale which commemnced yesterday, 3rd February. The centre would like to thank all their customers and donors over the last 10 years. ■

As ever if you have queries about this article or you’d like me to talk about a tech issue that interests or concerns you in a future article, then pop me an email at sam@getitfixed.ie, or you can phone the shop on 053 9238544. ■

Streamus's tagline is “Simple streaming music” and it lives up to it effortlessly. There is a great “Getting Started” section on the website which will take you through everything from playing videos, to adding playlists and keyboard shortcuts. Check out www.streamus.com for more information.

With Streamus, you type Streamus into the address bar at the top of the page, press tab, type the "song you want" and it'll instantly start playing the song from YouTube. You can also add new songs to a playlist, or create a radio station based on an artist. It's a pretty simple idea, but it makes it so you can leverage all that music on YouTube into a pretty decent little music player without keeping a tab open all day long.

Wexford County Council’s Environment Section will be holding a series of information evenings around the county during this month. To find out more about septic tanks, their proper construction, maintenance and what to expect during a septic tank inspection you can go along to The Presentation Centre Enniscorthy on Weds 12th February at 8pm. For details on other venues ring Wexford County Council on 053-9196313. ■

St. Patrick’s Day Parade 2014 The St. Patrick’s Day Parade Committee met recently and decided that the 2014 Parade will be held on Monday, 17th March, commencing at 3.00pm. The marchers and walking groups will assemble at Senan’s Parish Church where the Parade will set off at 3 o’clock. This year the floats and vehicles participating in the Parade will assemble on The Promenade which is a change from previous years. Previously they congregated on the N11 (Wexford Road) but with traffic difficulties it became problematic and the Committee were advised that it would be prudent to change the assembly point for the floats and vehicles. The usual number of marching bands is expected to take part this year including the Northfield Caledonia Pipes and Drums from Birmingham. The Committee is now in the process of contacting all the different Clubs and Organisation and inviting them to take part in the Parade.

‘Pylon’ on the pressure

SF Ard Fheis for Wexford

opposition to Eirgrid’s overground pylon proposals has been growing significantly over recent months. Cllr James Browne brought up the issue at the January meeting of Enniscorthy Town Council, informing the meeting that 35,000 submissions have been received by Eirgrid many highlighting the possible health risks associated with these pylons but also one from Bord Failte which illustrates the potential for damage to our tourism industry in the South East. The Chairperson of Enniscorthy Town Council, Johnny Mythen, has stated that he has real concerns about the EirGrid Grid Link project and believes that the government is purposely ignoring reasonable arguments put forward against

The Sinn Féin Ard Fheis in Wexford on 7-8th February will offer something for everyone in the family according to a l o c a l c o u n c i l l o r. c l l r Anthony Kelly said that while political debate and policy making was the main objectives of the annual national meeting of Sinn Féin members, several cultural, historical and entertainment events have also been organised to cater to everyone’s taste. “This Ard Fheis will welcome up to 2,000 Sinn Féin members into Wexford town,” Cllr Kelly said, “But we also aim to run fringe events for people who are not attending the conference to give them a taste of republican socialism in the twenty first century. Several exhibitions and cultural events will be held around the venue in Whites Hotel and in the Arts Centre. Among these events will be re-enactments and lectures on Irish republican history." “Several international dignitaries will be visiting the town including the Cuban and Palestinian ambassadors and a high ranking official from the ANC. Several leading figures of the national unions will also be in attendance.”

of these overhead power lines here in Wexford and other parts of the country affected. They have no intention of even considering relocating power lines in certain areas.” Local Sinn Féin election candidate Fionntán O'Súilleabháin has spoken out about the issue: “Health damage that could be caused by this project has been ignored by Kenny and his spin doctors. A recent study by an Oxford Professor stated that a child's chance of getting cancer increased by 69% when they lived within 200 metres of a pylon. It is accepted by most people, including our Minister for Health, that low frequency magnetic fields increase the risk of acute lymphoblastic leukaemia. “The Wexford Eirgrid Action Group and other anti pylon move-

the project due to the influence of vested interests. Cllr Mythen, who has attended public meetings on this issue, has called for the government to engage in serious dialogue with communities who oppose the plan. Local Fianna Fáil TD John Browne has accused the government of being arrogant on this issue: “The Minister with responsibility for energy supply, Pat Rabbitte, has taken to the airwaves to dismiss and belittle the communities that have genuine concerns about the construction of pylons on their doorsteps. He has actually described public concerns as nothing more than a ‘whim’ and ‘some passing fashion.’ “This disgraceful attitude from the Taoiseach and Minister Rabbitte clearly demonstrates that senior government has no intention of listening to communities about the health, economic and social consequences

ments should be commended for making such a strong stand on this issue. Wexford County Council has also made its opposition known. It seems that whenever the government wants to silence protestors, it will dangle the carrot and stick of job creation. Pylon protestors are not against job creation. What they oppose is the very real health, economic and environmental risks involved with this project." At the end of January Energy Minister Pat Rabbitte announced the appointment of an independent expert panel to review the underground and overhead options. In recent days Eirgrid has issued a statement as follows: “In order to address the concerns that have emerged from the public over the course of the recent consultations, the following are our commitments: • We will conduct a comprehensive underground analy-

sis for the Grid Link and Grid West projects. • We w i l l w or k w i t h t h e Government appointed independent expert panel to review underground and overhead options before we proceed to the next stages of project development. • We w i l l i m p l e m e n t a Community Gain Fund encompassing a fund for localities and for residences located close to new pylons and stations. • We will adopt and adhere to recommendations arising from the Government initiated expert review of Electric and Magnetic Fields. • We will comprehensively address major issues such as concerns about tourism, agriculture and equine concerns. • We will review the consultation process in order to enhance public engagement. EirGrid has produced a document which sets out in more detail how it proposes to implement the new initiatives. The document will be available at all EirGrid information offices and is available at www.eirgridprojects.com. The people of the South East owe a debt of gratitude to the dedicated, local community groups whose opposition to the Eirgrid project has now grown and reached the point where Energy Minister Pat Rabbitte was forced to intervene. His proposals however look a lot like “kicking to touch” – a temporary solution which will tide the government parties over until after the local and European elections in May. We suspect those dedicated opposition groups will be out in force again come the summer. ■ Robbie O’Connor (Cushinstown Rathgarogue GAA) and Harry Curtis (Adamstown GAA) present a cheque for €1,650 for the recent Trocaire appeal to Bishop Brennan, proceeds of a recent 'Strictly Come Dancing' final night.

Advice & hints from your locAl hArdwAre teAm 9 DIY JOBS FOR SPRInG THAT WILL LAST THE WHOLE YEAR

 Do a thorough inspection of the outside of your property.

It's easy to forget about the outside of a building, but checking it over after a winter of bad weather is a good idea because small problems can quickly become big ones. You want to look for leaking or overflowing gutters, cracked roof tiles, peeling paint and rot in windows and doors. Some things you'll be able to fix yourself, but others will need a professional.

 Bleed Your Radiators. Central heating systems always get some air in them, which causes the radiators to stay cold and can lead to corrosion.

 Spring Clean Your Sofa. If you've just spent a winter hanging out on your sofa watching box sets then it's time for it to get a thorough spruce-up. Remove all the cushions, give them a good thump and then vacuum the whole thing thoroughly. Spot-clean any stains, and remove pet hairs. It'll feel like a new piece of furniture!

Lower Templeshannon, Enniscorthy, Co. Wexford T: 053 924 2432 or 924 2433 F: 053 924 2435 E: hardware@jdonohoe.com

 Fix That Leaking Tap. The threat of a hosepipe ban is not likely to be with us in 2014, but nevertheless it's always good to fix a leaking tap which otherwise wastes hundreds of litres of clean water a year. Usually the problem is that the washer inside is old. Replacing it will only cost a few cents.

 Refresh Your Room. Renovating a room doesn't need to mean something major – simply moving the furniture around can make it feel like a whole new space. Try using furniture and decorative items from elsewhere in your home too. Go a little further by painting one wall in a new colour and buying some matching soft furnishings.

 Oil That Squeaky Door. You know the one – it annoys everyone but no one has got round to doing anything about it. A squirt of WD40 into the hinges will solve the problem instantly.

 Hang Your Pictures. Most people have a stack of pictures somewhere they have never gotten round to hanging. Now is the time, if only because of that lovely Zen-like feeling you get when another small task

Robert Levingstone, Manager

has been completed. Just make sure you choose the right fixings for your wall type.

 Touch Up Your Paintwork. Wear and tear inevitably leads to small chips, marks and cracks in the paintwork and half a day of DIY will pay immediate visual dividends. For chipped woodwork, sand it with a fine sandpaper, then dab on a little undercoat and when it's dry, the topcoat. Use a fine filler for cracked walls and paint over when dry. For marks, look for 'magic erasers' from your local hardware store – special white foam squares that miraculously clean paintwork when moistened.  Refresh Your Tile Grout. A simple way of freshening up the tiles in your bathroom is using an anti-mould grout pen. You can buy special grout pens, sort of giant felt tips that mean all you need to do is draw on the grout lines for a totally fresh look. Jamie Murphy chats with Podge Dwyer Fast becoming a sensation, Enniscorthy man Podge Dwyer has racked up over 3,000 hits on his YouTube release of his new single, "Demons II". Listening to the track I could visualise the names and places from Enniscorthy that were mentioned in the track. It truly is a phenomenal track and if you haven't heard it, what is wrong with you? Go to YouTube and check it out!! I caught up with Podge earlier this month.

itive as the song moves. And there's many other examples of progression if you really want to study the song. 2. Were you always going to be a hip hop artist or was there other influences? I never wanted to be a Hip-Hop artist, I was a Hip-Hop nerd. Then one day a friend did a verse for me, which I said I wasn't impressed with and was asked to do better. I did. It progressed from there until I said, I'm pretty good at this, if I really study and work hard I could be one of the best in the country. Now I am. Other influences are every genre of music, from Soul, Blues, Rock, Jazz, Reggae, pretty much anything that's good. 3. Do you think the town is influential in your work? Of course, I lived here all my life, everyone is influenced by their surroundings. 4. The lyrics in Demons are very introspective. Was that a conscious decision?

Yes, very much so I spent nearly a week planning a mental blueprint of how I wanted the song to be. I put immense thought into my lyrics. 5. Is it a case of lyrics then music or music then lyrics? Having the perfect beat is vital for any song. But, first and foremost I'm a lyricist and my main objective is to be a lyricist. In this song my lyricism isn't too mindboggling but, most of my time is spent coming up with lyrics with hidden meanings, fine threads etc. I leave the music to producers and in somewhat a selfish way, I reap the spoils. 6. Are you working on new material? I'm working on my mixtape "Nuthin' But A Boozehound" right now. I still have no idea when it will be done or released, all I know is it will be free and won't be released until I feel it’s ready. 7. Where can people follow you? Find out more info? F o l l o w m e o n Tw i t t e r @PodgeDwyer or add me on Facebook. As the man himself said, find him on the Twitter and the Facebook. Now stop reading and go check out the song!!!

DEmons II

1. Podge, a true revelation. Your work is great. What inspired your latest work, Demons II? The main inspiration of "Demons II" was people shouting out at local gigs to 'Play Demons' (the original that I released and then took back down). I wasn't happy with 'Demons 1' as it's now being referred to, but the support I got from it and the constant requests, I decided to do a sequel. I released it exactly a year after 'Demons' with the underlying theme of progression. Firstly, progression of my skills over a year of no releases, in the song I even purposely start the first verse with basic lyricism and then progressively get more lyrically complex as I move on adding more double-entendres and metaphors etc to the end but, still only showing the tip of the iceberg (its a teaser of my lyrical ability). Secondly, progression of the mind-set, it gets more pos-

Happy new year!! Right, where are we? I have joined a new band. I cannot give too much away but I will say watch this space. #TheFolly. Oh and by the time you read this, the Drama Group will have met and discussed going forward in 2014. Expect news soon enough, dear readers!! THE WoRD GAmE Words are lovely. They give rhyme, reason and a sense of order in this crazy world. But they can also be dangerous, dear reader. They can be used to justify unjust actions and fill up answer sheets. Despite business being at times virtually non-existent in our fair little town and indeed a well known establishment familiar to many that will sadly have closed its doors by the time you read this. Don't fret though, here's the good news, the happy words. According to a report from a local Minister, "unemployment is on a downward trajectory, which is very encouraging."

Now this is very encouraging to be fair. Encouraging, if you're an employer and want to get work done at knock-down prices or want to appear like you're fixing a problem instead of sticking another plaster over the bulging water pipe. In an article published in The Irish Times, the chairman of JobBridge Ireland, Martin Murphy (who is also MD at Hewlett Packard by the by) said that "fewer than 40 of the 11,500 participating companies had been disqualified for abuses of JobBridge since it began about two years ago." A high ranking official denying any misgivings have taken place in a scheme that only ben-

efits the already wealthy? That is just outrageous, that would never happen here. Not in holy Catholic Ireland. I mean, you'll be telling me next that a once reputable charity designed to help those less fortunate have corrupt officials pouring out of every orifice, lining their pockets with money that was handed over in good faith. Disgusting. Anyway, we're off topic here. Downward trajectory sounds lovely. It means that something that was possibly at critical level or worse is not there anymore, it is slowly regressing. But there in lies the problem, Job Bridge is not fixing the problem, it's lowering numbers signing on. And some-

thing else that's not encouraging in this climate is the number of young ones leaving the island. This news is not encouraging for the families that watched their loved ones fly away out of our tiny island or the thousands considering the same, because it is "the only option left." So do everyone in the country a favour those of you in power that use words to cover up your flaws, your f***ups and, when it is exposed, your insatiable greed. Stop using words to keep us at bay. Use action, get up and fix this place before it implodes on itself and you are presiding over a wasteland. – Jamie

If you’re looking for entertainment this month then oylegate is the place to be… Oylegate pantomime, Aladdin, will be staged in the new Oylegate Community Centre, opening on Wednesday 5th February and continuing on Thursday 6th , Friday 7th and Sunday 9th, nightly at 8pm sharp. There will be no performance on Saturday 8th. This is the first time for Aladdin to grace the stage in Oylegate even though pantomime has been very much to the fore in the area for some years. The all new original script by Ray Quigley comes with the

usual barrel of laughs, lively dancing and beautiful solo singing and chorus numbers. The part of Aladdin is played by Cathal Byrne who hails from Bree but has crossed the Slaney (by car rather than by boat or magic carpet) to take on the lead role. Cathal is well known for his stagework and is loving the part. The Emperor is played by Cormac Downes and his daughter Jasmine is played by Danielle Maher who needless to say is swept off her feet by the handsome Aladdin, but before they can all "live happily ever after " the tale takes some twists and turns from the inter-

fering demon Abanazar (Sean Quirke – typecast). But as must be the case in all pantomimes good overcomes evil and with lots of help from the Genie of the Lamp (James Freeman) and the Peri of the Ring, Ciara Brennan, Abanazar meets his deserved nasty end. Comedy is provided in abundance by Johnny Reck (Hu Flung Dung) and Michael Shiggins (Yon Tu Long) and Wishee Washee (Eamon Mernagh). Dame "Widow Twankey" features Joe Hayden in the part for the first time and he is stunning. As is the norm in Oylegate – expect the unexpected – with lots of new faces, and surprise character appearances. If you want to lift your spirits then Oylegate pantomime is the place to be. Tickets for the show are €10 for adults and €5 for national school children. Booking 053-9138192 or on the door on the night. n

Allotments not on the agenda

At the January meeting of Enniscorthy Town Council, Cllr John O’Rourke brought up the idea of having allotments (a community food-growing garden) somewhere in the town of Enniscorthy. Town Manager, Tony Larkin, was not opposed to the idea but pointed out the large cost that would be involved – fencing, lighting, pathways, etc and with the Town Council about to be abolished he felt the matter of allotments would be something for the County Council to look at down the road although if something was required e.g. by Transition Year students as part of their school work then that could, perhaps, be accommodated on a temporary basis.

In this new series, Maria Nolan looks at what’s new and exciting on the Enniscorthy fashion scene and beyond.

Slaney Catwalk Focus on ‘Glamour’ Spring is in the air and whilst young men’s thoughts may well turn to love and other things, women’s thoughts will most definitely focus on fashion and what’s on trend for Spring/Summer 2014. With this in mind the Slaney News has decided to take to the catwalk so to speak and each month we intend to feature what’s new and exciting on the Enniscorthy scene and beyond. Gorey is fast becoming the fashion capital of the South East with Wexford a close second so it’s high time Enniscorthy pulled up its socks or get left behind. To this end I paid a visit to local fashion icon herself, Mary Hudson Ryan, who is synonymous with the style business in Enniscorthy. Mary

has been in business since 1999 when she seized the opportunity to open a new ladies fashion outlet having recognised an opening for one in her home town. In the years since Mary, the attractive, effervescent businesswoman, has built up a reputable business and a database of local fashionistas with her very wearable, very affordable and very classy labels including Gardeur, Via Appia, White Stuff, Libra, Tommy Hilfiger and many, many more. I asked Mary for some Spring/Summer fashion tips and it seems the nautical look is everywhere this season. “Navy and cream is the first taste of Spring” according to our experienced expert. And her advice is to buy one basic piece like a blazer, dress or skirt and match

with less expensive pieces to achieve a fresh, new, on trend look. Mary’s golden rule is “Always dress for your shape”, and for the m o re m a tu re l a d y s h e s ays : “Remember what suited us 5 years ago may not suit us now. We all have parts of us that we know are a problem – tummy, legs, arms, and they do become softer as we mature.” What a lovely term… softer! This Enniscorthy retailer, Mary says, will be only too happy to help and can actually take the form of your Personal Shopper, all you need to do is ask. “Over the years we at Glamour have established a rapport with our clients to help achieve a fashionable, affordable look for you with our honesty and advice and we do buy our stock

in a variety of shapes and sizes with you the customer in mind.” And as a long standing customer of Mary’s I can verify that no-one is ever allowed to leave Glamour with something that doesn’t look good on them. Mary’s Motto is: “If you look good, I look good.” On a personal level I can fully endorse Glamour Boutique having

shopped there since it opened and Mary Hudson Ryan for her outstanding fashion sense and style and also for her wonderful, warm manner and pleasant staff. There is always a smiling face at Glamour and an eagerness not just to make a sale but to make sure that you the customer leave the premises with a feel good factor

Junk koture goes Haute Couture

Recently Anna Somers and her teammates Noelene Shanahan and Aoife Parker who are close friends and in the same transition year class came up with a terrific concept and design for the annual Junk Koture Fashion Show at Colaiste Bride. As the outfit had to be made with recyclable material and had to include some electrical materials Anna and friends thought that takeaway coffee cups and copper wire from an old coffee machine would be interesting elements to work with and easy to access. From the beginning of September last the girls began collecting coffee cups by spreading the word throughout Colaiste Bride and were thrilled with the marvellous response. Local coffee shops also made donations, along with collections done by family and friends at local GAA matches. “Glue was definitely our best friend for the 5 months it took to

put the outfit together,” Anna Somers laughed. “We never had a set design, instead we decided to go with the flow. Starting from the bottom and working our way to the top.” “We chose our materials first – coffee cups, sugar, stirring sticks, copper wire and coffee beans and then looked for possible designs.” 26 dresses made by the transition year students were modeled on the night and Anna’s creation received the Student Choice Award – the outfit most voted for by students. Anna, Noeleen and Aoife had special thanks for art teachers Ms Duggan, Ms McEvoy and Transition Year Coordinator Ms. Whelan. The girls are now looking forward to the Junk Koture regional finals in the Helix, Dublin, but first they must get past the initial judging session which is done through the website by voting online. Our Enniscorthy talented trio can be found under " Insomnia"

Anna tells me. So go on people get voting for these wonderfully innovative, creative and imaginative pals. The girls who tell me that they wear anything currently on trend, particularly what the celebs are wearing, seem to have an eye for fashion and a flair for style and I asked them if they would consider working in the fashion industry. “Because of our Junk Koture experience we got a great insight into how being a designer would be and would certainly consider it as a career now,” Anna confirms. If this beautifully structured and haute couture creation is anything to go by I would say that they could well have a future in the world of high fashion and wouldn’t it be fantastic to have an Enniscorthy designer in our midst. Go Girls – the world is your oyster! Looking forward to seeing you on the catwalks of the future. – Maria Nolan

Showcasing Wexford On a recent visit to Showcase Ireland’s Creative Expo Trade Fair at the RDS I was thrilled to come across 8 Exhibitors and Entrepreneurs from the Slaney Valley confirming that all is well and thriving in the fashion/jewellery and beauty business in Wexford. And we are obviously big into our fashion headpieces in the sunny South East as I came across 3 prominent Milliners who are living and working and indeed making a living in Wexford and one could say contributing to the economy and glamour of the county. Alice Kelly is a full-time milliner based at her home studio in Blackwater. Alice’s hats are imaginative, creative and beautiful like herself and she takes her inspiration from shapes and colour in nature and often uses quirky materials for her couture creations as well as Irish tweed, leather and luxurious lace – I particularly liked her use of Pheasant feathers in her latest collection. Amanda Byrne’s Highbury Designs first caught my eye in her craft workshop in Wells House. I just loved her simple yet extremely elegant headpieces fashioned Downton Abbey style with a bit of a modern twist making them completely on trend at the moment. ‘I love the elegant simplicity of the cloche and the numerous ways it can be finished but still represent a strong woman with an air of

sophistication’ says Amanda who now works from home and loves to use felts and Irish tweed in her 2014 Collections – Vintage, Modern and Tweed. Last and by no means least is designer Patsy Flood O’Connor with her millinery Company Mad4Hats. Patsy designs as she says herself ‘for the stylish to wear at winter weddings, race meetings and posher family gatherings’. Patsy creates her own clay blocks to mould the hats, allowing the shapes to emerge as she works, like a sculptor freeing the form from the stone! Mad4Hats sells in boutiques in Ireland, UK, USA, France and Italy and her new fur-felt range with her signature feather features was certainly turning heads at the RDS. Blaithin Ennis is a wonderfully talented, creative, unconventional designer who has been producing outstanding pieces of jewellery and accessories since

2012. ‘A unique accessory can give a new lease of life to the very simple garment’ is Blaithin’s philosophy and when you see her pieces you will understand why. They are very special, striking pieces that combine unusual materials with symmetry and geometric shapes to create unique, instantly recognisable, exquisite statement pieces. Purchasing a piece of Blaithin’s jewellery I am certain is an investment. Paula Tate Guerin is a contemporary jewellery designer operating at Wells House who creates intricate, delicate, lace like pieces ‘each with a distinctive style but all stay true to the visual language I have developed’ Paula explains. Beautiful, dainty and gossamer like Paula’s work is inspired by natures architecture and comes in limited edition, bespoke commissioned pieces as well as a host of everyday wear. Naoimh Prim is not just an

Claragh and Angela close up shops Enniscorthy is losing two of its established fashion and beauty businesses with the closure of Saria’s boutique on Main Street and Ziggy’s Hairsalon in Templeshannon. Reduced business due to the recession and high costs,

including rates, has led both proprietors, Claragh and Angela, to take the difficult decision to close. Saria’s is currently having a massive closing down sale so grab a bargain while you still can.

The Slaney News always enjoyed our visits to both premises where we were always welcomed and greeted with a smile. We wish Claragh and Angela every success in the future. – F.C.

unusual name, she is producing some very unusual, beautiful and functional table linen, cushions and scarves using 100% Irish linen. Naoimh draws inspiration from her natural surroundings in County Wexford – the beaches, woodlands and hedgerows. ‘I really enjoy starting with a familiar shape from nature, interpreting it into my own design and playing with colour to to create familiar yet unexpected printed pieces’. Niamh Hogan, the owner and manager of Holos Skincare from Nature Beauty Company, is the perfect advertisement for her own company and products. Her glowing skin and shinning eyes totally endorse and promote her natural health skincare range – Holos. Using ingredients like coconut, sweet almond and jojoba oils her products are good enough to eat. As well as taking care of your skin Niamh’s essential oils promote physical and mental well being and are suitable for all skin types but highly recommended for mature or dry skin. So calling all you… ahem… vintage ladies out there go online and take a look at this truly wonderful beauty range all handcrafted in the sunny South East. It was certainly women of Wexford to the fore at Showcase Ireland but it would be remiss of me not to mention our gifted and extremely well known Potter and Artisan Paul Maloney who also featured at the RDS with his exquisite ranges – the Ocean tableware range, a contemporary black and white collection range with a signature deep

blue glaze running through the pieces that remind you of the sea. A new and innovative range of handthrown pottery in shades of baby blue, soft pink and green was also on display along with Paul`s new range of limited edition fine art prints – his Field of Dreams Collection is a colourful animal range that reminded me very much of the work of one

The Gathering achievements Vinegar Hill study announced On Wednesday 29th January 2014, Wexford County Hall hosted a reception for Gathering initiatives that took place across County Wexford during 2013. In excess of 50 Gatherings registered for the event with 160 people attending on the evening. Wexford Ambassador Ann Doyle addressed the group and presented certificates on the night. Wexford Ambassador Michael Londra who is currently based in the US.was represented by Margie and Michael Londra on the night and sent good wishes and congratulations to Gatherings in his absence. Chairperson of the Wexford Gathering initiative, Cllr John Hegarty, acted as MC for the event: “Working with our funding partners Failte Ireland, IPB and Wexford Local Authorities, The Wexford Gathering committee faced a challenge in 2012, how to make the Gathering real in Wexford. This evening we see the communities, families and individuals of County Wexford who hosted initiatives and it is you that have made it a success - hosting in excess of 100 Gathering Events throughout 2013.” Ranging from family and parish reunions to large festivals and themed events – The Gathering inspired Wexford communities to celebrate and reach out to the Irish diaspora.

Chairperson of Wexford County Council Cllr Ted Howlin also remarked on the night about success “Nationally, the Gathering has been deemed a success – attracting in excess of 250,000 additional overseas visitors to Ireland for 5,000 Gatherings, estimated to be worth approximately €170million in revenue. You and your Gathering played a part in that achievement. In County Wexford, we estimate that your efforts resulted in close to 5,000 additional overseas visitors to our county, at a value of €3.4million. In particular our county flagship events, the JFK50 Homecoming, John Barry Maritime Festival and Calling All Lighthouse Keepers events have generated a media impact and value that we will reap rewards from far into the future”.

Wexford Ambassador Anne Doyle spoke warmly of her love for Wexford and of the great year she enjoyed as We x f o rd Gathering Ambassador. “I often find Wexford people can be reticent about what they and the county have on offer. However as you don’t wheel out these events year after year, 2013 really was something special for the County”. Ann presented 50 certificates, signed by President Higgins, to Gathering committees on the night in recognition of their contribution and achievement during the year. Chairperson of Visit Wexford Tourism, Peter Wilson, spoke with Alan Corcoran about the need for tourism service providers and communities in the county to get behind what we have on offer and sell Wexford as a great destination. n

Mindful Meditation It was silence as usual at Enniscorthy Library on Thursday 16th January but for a very different reason as Mary Elizabeth Rice took the 30 strong audience on a Journey Into Awareness through meditation. Mindfulness is about living very much in the moment – it is about being fully aware of the present not looking back on the past or forward to the future but rather living in the only time that is real – the present. Mary Elizabeth says we do this by paying attention moment to moment and cultivating a non-judgemental attitude. Practice is the key she says and results are quiet and subtle. Mary Elizabeth has a voice that you could listen to all night and indeed during some of the meditation I wasn`t at all certain that I wasn’t dreaming – it’s a voice that permeates without being intrusive after a while it sounds like an inner voice in your head rather than something coming from the outside. Relaxing, smooth and restful it’s a voice perfect for the job. At the end of the exercise Mary Elizabeth told us to

A major three-year full archaeological study of the 1798 battle on Vinegar Hill has been announced. The study is set to begin early this year and the three-year programme of archaeological, historical, and geographical research into the events of the Battles of Enniscorthy and Vinegar Hill has been recently given the full support of Wexford County Council. Commenting on the announcement, project manager, and manager of The National 1798 Rebellion Centre, Jacqui Hynes said, “We are delighted that this intensive study of this historical battleground has become a reality, and at the end of this study we hope to have a more complete picture of what exactly took place and the expanse of the Battles of Enniscorthy and Vinegar Hill, encompassing the dates of 28th May to 21st June 1798.” Jacqui also points out that “Although there are significant historical accounts of the battle, from first-hand, to those written for ‘political’ purposes, which serve to add to our knowledge of the events, what is missing, is a full survey of the site and the battle in its entirety”. The primary goal of the project is to pave the way for outstanding interpretation of the battle site and more importantly the conservation of Vinegar Hill Battlefield and its environs. In particular the programme aims to identify the extent of the battlefield, areas where intense fighting took place, the location of any temporary structures, weaponry, domestic ware, areas of engagement and fighting in Enniscorthy Town, and whether there were any mass graves in the locality. Both national and international experts will add their expertise to this project, which in turn will place Vinegar Hill Battlefield at the forefront of

launching the archaeological study of the 1798 battle on Vinegar hill, back l-r: Dr tony Pollard from the centre for Battlefields archaeology in university of Glasgow, Jacqui hynes (manager of the national 1798 rebellion centre), tony larkin (Enniscorthy town manger), and local children from St mary's Primary School in Enniscorthy. battlefield research and interpretation in Ireland, and set a standard, which would become the new benchmark for all other sites. The study will be carried out using a number of methodologies including non-invasive techniques, which will have no impact on the landscape of underlying archaeology such as LIDAR Laser Scanning, Ground Penetrating Radar, Magnetic Susceptibility and Gradiometry and Metal Detection amongst others. Some very limited excavation may be considered on parts of the Hill, purely to confirm or investigate features identified through the survey, and this would be in full compliance with all relevant legislation. Jacqui also highlights the potential of this research, “From our research into battlefield tourism, we are confident that this programme will propel Vinegar Hill Battlefield to a top attraction, but this can only be achieved through a compre-

hensive knowledge of the events and outcomes of the battle.” This pioneering project will be unique in so far as the projects co-ordinators will actively be seeking on-going community participation at various stages of the project in areas such as field walking and information gathering. The site study will also host visiting school groups, who wish to observe the study and site progress. The study findings will be exhibited at the 1798 National Rebellion Centre upon completion. Commenting on the public participation Jacqui said, “It will be an interesting and exciting three years as we wait and see if Ireland’s most infamous battle site surrenders any long lost secrets. People are encouraged to visit vinegarhill.ie for updates on the work, and to register their interest in taking part in the public elements of this project. Throughout the study Vinegar Hill Battlefield will remain open to visitors. For further details see visitwexford.ie n

On April 7th 2013, Yvonne Tyler left Holy Cross Abbey in Tipperary to walk all the way down to Cork, to France by boat and then continue her incredible journey to Santiago de Compostela arriving early July! Yes, some 3 million steps with all her belongings on her back! This was all in aid of raising funds for CAN, “Cottage Autism Network”, a Wexford based Autism charity!! Yvonne was accompanied by retired Defence Forces Officer, Michael Walsh, from Tipperary who was also raising funds for his local Autism charity. Whilst Yvonne had walked parts of the Camino before, she had never undertaken such a challenge, as well as suffering from Rheumatoid Arthritis! And as if all this was not enough the first half

of their journey was walked in pouring rain!! And during one of the many downpours in France she was offered a lift in a car, but declined in order to make her Pilgrimage complete! However when they started their walk across the north of Spain, the sun came out and they were joined by various family and friends helping them on their way to Santiago de Compostela. This is not only an amazing feat of endurance but also a wonderful example of helping others in greater need. On Sunday 16th February in The Bailey, Enniscorthy, Yvonne will share her experiences. All are welcome to attend, listen, see photos of Yvonne’s wonderful journey as well as talk to her and maybe consider doing the Camino yourself?

ST BERNADETTE Local man David Hasslacher will also try and reveal a little more about Saint Bernadette and perhaps some of the less known facts about her life and background. Whilst she was uneducated, sickly and very poor she was also very holy, courageous and spirited. Her ethos is also very much in tune with the present Pope’s. Her strength was very much of mind rather than body and perhaps her greatest strength was through her humility. CAN – “COTTAGE AUTISM NETWORK” This organisation is Enniscorthy/ Wexford based and acts as a support to families affected by autism. So go along to The Bailey on Sunday 16th Feb from 3-5pm and support this wonderful cause. Refreshments will be served.

Co. Wexford employment – the good and the bad

Paul Kehoe

Minister Paul Kehoe TD has welcomed a 7.5% drop in the number of people on the Live Register in Co Wexford over the last 12 months. Minister Kehoe was speaking following the publication of figures by the Central Statistics Office, which show that, nationally, the Live Register has now dropped for the last 18 months in a row and is now at its lowest level for four and a half years … 58,000 more people have joined the workforce over the last 12 months. We must build on this progress in the year ahead.” “Unemployment is on a downward trajectory in Wexford, which is very encouraging. But the Government fully recognises that unemployment rates remain far

too high and that we have a long way to go. We will continue to work in the year ahead to get key areas – such as retail, construction and domestic banking – back to sustainable levels. “Job creation is now growing at its fastest level since 2007. When this Government took office, nearly 7,000 private sector jobs were being lost every month. Now, almost 5,000 are being created every month. This is progress that I am determined to build on for the people of Wexford in the year ahead". On the negative side local Fianna Fáil TD, John Browne, has demanded greater focus on job creation in Wexford with new figures showing Wexford was virtually ignored for IDA investment in 2013. According to new figures received by Fianna Fáil, there were just 2 IDA site visits to Wexford last year and 3 in 2012. Overall, 149 new jobs were created in IDA supported companies in Wexford last year, while 62 IDA jobs were lost so the net increase was just 87 jobs in the entire year. “It clearly demonstrates that the county has been sidelined for jobs investment in the past two years,” said Deputy Browne. n

The Minister for Small Business, John Perry TD, launched the survey on ‘The Impacts of Community Owned Enterprise Centres in Ireland’ on behalf of the National Association of Community Enterprise Centres (NACEC) and Enterprise Ireland, during a visit to Enniscorthy Enterprise Centre last month. One of the key findings is that Community Enterprise Centres throughout Ireland have created 9,300 jobs in the past decade.

As of today, over 3,700 jobs are in place in the Enterprise Irelandfunded CECs all over the country. Mr Joe Kelly, the Chairman of the NACEC, speaking at the launch said: “NACEC member CECs have facilitated the creation of a considerable number of jobs over the last decade. Most importantly, these jobs are dispersed all over Ireland. In rural areas, the CEC is often the driver of economic development and job creation in that area.” n

Enniscorthy Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals peT approved

VET DIARY FOR FEBRUARY with the Moyne Veterinary Clinic

in each Slaney news the moyne Veterinary clinic deals with various issues relating to animals. this month, Joe ‘tackles’ a 35 year old pony! Sometimes it's difficult to gauge if there's any response to the articles you write so it was very satisfying to get a phone call from a guy asking could I try treating his Shetland pony, because of reading an article I'd written a few months ago in this same paper. His pony is 35 years of age and had slowed down to the point she was barely able to walk. He wasn't sure if we could do anything for her but was willing to give it a go.

ESPCA volunteers were very busy in the run up to Christmas and unfortunately the trend has continued well into the New Year, this means they have lots of new animals looking for homes. At the moment they have a wide range of cats and kittens looking for homes and they also have many dogs, young and old available for rehoming, including five Lab x collie pups.

The ESPCA would like to remind dog owners that lambing season is now in full swing and that steps should be taken to ensure dogs are kept under control at all times as owners will be held responsible for any cruelty to livestock. The group also would like to thank the people of

Enniscorthy and surrounds for their support in 2013 and they hope for continued support throughout this year. ESPCA also asks that the public report suspected animal neglect or cruelty to 053-9143919 during office hours or 0877723010 or 086-3075987 for weekend/evening emergencies. n

Great nature shot by local photographer Myles Carroll

So we checked her over, she was extremely stiff, lame and her coat was gone very dull and her skin seemed almost tight on her! Using the Kinesiology we checked the alignment of her hips, spinal column and then the meridians (acupuncture lines) in the body. We gave her powders to help her digestion, herbal remedies to strengthen the organs and some meds to help her mobility. We took her back regularly over the next 6–8 weeks to check her progress and although it was slow initially...(she is 35!) she was making enough progress to warrant sticking with the plan. Last Friday Michael came back with her, she didn't quite bounce out of the trailer but she did step out with a pep and with grace. Her coat looks great, her mobility is really good and she rewarded her owner's faith in a process he wasn't really 100% sure of, but took the chance, ran with it, and so far she has done so well it was a tonic for all concerned. In short, by helping to strengthen the organs, improve the digestion and giving the body the correct nutrients there is the possibility of being able to improve most conditions be they skin, skeletal or general debility.

This goes for all animals… and humans for that matter. If we can give the body the building blocks and remove the road blocks these animals will improve time and time again. That's what makes this job as rewarding as it is. How is your pet doing?

A local contributor looks at life today in Enniscorthy and beyond irish Water In October last in this column I wrote an article about Irish Water. The general thrust of the item was to make people aware of what was in the pipeline (pardon the pun) in relation to our future dealing with this monopoly. I pointed out that we are not only going to pay for the provision of water but we must also finance the highly paid C.E.O. and his staff and all the perks to which they will be entitled. Despite being aware of the fact that we, the public, always pay, little did I realise what we were being led into by the government. Millions being handed to consultants, massive salaries for a staff of over 300 shortly rising to 500, bonuses of €7,000 each being paid to these staff members before they produce as much as a gallon of water and if that wasn’t bad enough we are paying to send the same staff to laugh-ins at expensive hotels to boost their morale. On top of all this we have to continue paying the county councils water departments for a further 12 years. All of this will lead to you and me receiving water rates bills seeking hundreds of euro just before Christmas this year and being warned that if we fail to pay Irish Water will cut off our supply. I will leave it up to yourself to decide as to who is responsible for this.

Charities Recent revelations in relation to the pay and perks of those running many of our charities have shocked most people. I am not specifically referring to the C.R.C. but to what I describe as professional charities which over the years have built up an internal infrastructure for themselves with highly paid C.E.O.s and large administrative set-ups which must be fed millions annually just to maintain their own salaries and expenses. The duplication of services being provided by many of these charities is also ridiculous. This is seen most clearly when a disaster occurs somewhere and within hours we are subjected to radio, tv, and newspaper advertisements from four or five organisations seeking assistance for the same project. This is usually accompanied by interviews with the highly paid chiefs of the charities (some of them former politicians with good ministerial pensions) urging us to dig deep to help. Let me be clear. I fully recognise the need for such bodies but do we need over 24,000 charities in a small country like ours? In fairness that figure includes thousands of bodies which are entirely voluntary and whose members take no expenses whatever and

remember when Uncle Joe bought me a set of drums years ago I nearly drove you and mam mad.” “Yes son I certainly do,” I replied.

Pic: ©Joseph Doyle

View from the Hill in fact involvement costs them considerable money. However in the professional charity sector do we need to be paying charity chiefs over €100,000 minimum plus perks and expenses each year? It would be interesting to see how much of each euro we donate actually gets to the individuals who need it. While we live in a free country and people are entitled to set up and run whatever they like, provided it’s lawful, I must ask the question as to why many of these bodies are not amalgamated, their services streamlined and provided at a much less expensive rate. Having said the above it is crucial that I say my remarks are

not in any way directed at those good people who organise events and go out in all sorts of weather to support their particular cause but rather as a suggestion as to how the results of their good work can be put to better use. Christmas revenge Bought my grandson a large set of drums for Christmas. I believe that since he got his present he can’t be kept away from it banging away every day. A couple of days ago my son was visiting and when I asked him how the young fellow was getting on with the drums he somehow or other got a bit agitated. “Dad”, he said, “What were you thinking? Don’t you

loCal eleCtions As this column goes to press most of the political parties are in the process of selecting their candidates for the local elections. Independents are also gearing up for the fray. Over the next few months we will be inundated with correspondence and calls from those who are running for council seats. We will all make up our own minds as to which party or individual to support and this will be based on our experience of the individual or particular party. Many will use the election, as they are perfectly entitled to do, to punish the government or indeed opposition for what they see as a betrayal or reneging on previous promises and will exact their revenge through the polls. This is democracy at its best and we are very lucky in this country to have that privilege. However it is very important to remember that regardless of how angry we feel at the last five years of austerity and regardless of our initial reaction to a particular candidate or party that we remain courteous to those who call to us seeking support. Certainly we must put forward our honest

opinion without fear or favour but we must not forget our manners at the door or on the street. Bear in mind that it takes extraordinary courage to put your name on a ballot paper and ask your peers to cast judgement on you. You may get elected but you may also only achieve a very small number of votes. Let it be said that there is no shame in not being elected or coming last in the poll. The real shame is that not enough people put themselves forward for election and prefer to comment from the sidelines (like View from the Hill). So let us embrace democracy, certainly share our views, but do so in a courteous manner and at the end of it all make sure to vote and be glad that we have the chance to do so. and Finally… The members of Enniscorthy Town Council are to be complimented on ensuring that what is the last rate struck by them did not show any increase on the previous number of years. This decision demonstrates that these members are close to the community in recognising that local business is still going through difficult times. Let’s hope that this time next year the new councils which will be elected in May will have an equally sensible approach. n

motoring news round-up

The new year arrived among a flurry of figures about 2013 car sales, optimism about the car market in 2014 and the usual stream of new metal arriving in showrooms. 74,303 cars were sold in 2013, 6.6% less than 2012. The introduction of the 132 registration period did boost new car registrations in July compared to the usual dwindling numbers in this period, but 2013 was still hardly a bumper year for the motor industry. Wexford was the only

county that saw more cars sold in 2013 compared to the previous year. But it was a very small increase of just 0.5% 1,821 new cars registered in Wexford compared to 1,812 in 2012. Dealers have been reporting an increase in showroom traffic and stronger sales activity for the 141 registration period. The preliminary figures released by Motorcheck.ie for the first twenty days of January would support the dealer reported optimism, with

hot hatch superstar

Peugeot 208 GTi Peugeot has taken their popular 208 supermini and turned it into a proper performance car. Caroline Kidd reviews the 200bhp Peugeot 208 gTi. The Peugeot 208 GTi has the sort of visual clues that if you saw it on the street or in a car park you would probably label it a boy racer’s car. To start with there’s the sporty body with extended sills and wheel arches, dramatic 17” inch alloys with red brake calipers, roof spoiler, double exhaust, and the famous GTi badging. It sits lower than a standard 208 and has a wider track front and rear. Then of course there is the engine. Underneath the bonnet there is a 1.6-litre turb o c h a rg e d p o w e r p l a n t producing 200bhp. It will sprint to 100kmh in 6.8 second. These are credentials that I think any boy racer would be proud of. But let me tell you that even if you wouldn’t class yourself

as a boy racer (or girl racer!) you will enjoy and appreciate this car. It wants to impress you and you feel there is something special about it the minute you get into it. There is a black and red theme inside to spur you on and the small steering wheel with GTi motif feels great in the hands. Sports seats hold and cosset you. At night the dials surrounded by red LEDs really shine and you see the footwell lighting in full effect. Turn the key in the ignition and you are treated to a bass rumble. Place your hand on the aluminium topped gearknob, push it into first gear and away you go. On a twisty country road it holds the road like glue. The steering is precise, there is great body control and the nose will go where you want it. The 208 GTi is front wheel drive and that’s 200bhp through the front wheels of a supermini. But it can

14,004 new cars registered compared to 10,124 in the same period in 2013. January saw a number of brand new models hitting showrooms, some of the most notable being the Hyundai i10, SEAT Leon Sports Tourer, Citroen Grand C4 Picasso, Peugeot 308, Mazda 3 and Nissan Qashqai. I attended the launch of the new Peugeot 308 in January and my first impressions of the car are good. It shares its name only with its predeces-

sor and is a brand new car “from the ground up”. It looks great from the outside and has a swanky cabin to match. The 1.6 HDi 92bhp diesel returned 4.7l/100km (60 mpg) on the mostly motorway test route and was smooth and refined to go with it. Prices start from €18,990 for the entry level 1.2 VTi 82bhp petrol and €21,490 for the 1.6 HDi 92bhp diesel. I’ve also been driving the Fiat Panda 4x4 and Honda Civic recently and reviews of both will be coming soon. n

handle it and when you put your foot down you go in a straight line and don’t feel like the car wants to put you in the ditch. It’s a powerful but composed machine. With 275Nm of torque it pulls hard through the gears, accompanied by a fruity grunt from the exhaust. There is nothing diva like about it and you can drive it around town or further afield and not venture near its limit if you don’t want to. The ride is comfortable and you won’t find yourself lurching over bumps in the road. It won’t cost the earth to run either. But as a ‘hot hatch’, I would have expected a little more rawness. Sure it was fun to put your foot down and feel the car take off but I would have expected more of a performance through the gears getting there, maybe a bit more noise! I think this was part of Peugeot’s plan to make a good all-rounder that you can cruise around comfortably and affordably but access the power when want it and drive ‘on-the-limit’ (and gulp fuel!). Peugeot has made a hot hatch that is very easy to live with. Like I said I think if you took most people out of their standard hatchback, saloon or SUV with 1.6 diesel engine and put them in this they would love it for its agility and the thrill of all that power under the right foot. That’s how I felt about it. So it might not be as raw as a boy racer might hope for but if you like the looks of the 208, a sophisticated approach to hot hatchery, and the heritage that comes with the GTi badge going back to the heyday of the 205 GTi

of the 80s and 90s, then you will love this car. Thanks to Peugeot Ireland for providing the car for review. Log on to www.peugeot.ie for more details.

First may i say i am a Liverpool supporter but i still don't know who this man is. i was speaking to two men in my own pub the other day and they never heard of him either. readers i give you biLL LaCEy, footballer. Every boy dreams of playing football for Man Utd or Liverpool or maybe Everton but very few football players get to play for both Liverpool teams – Liverpool and Everton – but Bill Lacey did.

Born on 24th September 1889 in Enniscorthy Bill Lacey was a footballer who played for both Merseyside teams. He also played for Shelbourne and Linfield. Lacey was a dual international and played for both Ireland teams – the IFA and the FAI. He first played senior football with Shelbourne in 1906 and in 1908 helped them reach the final of the Irish Cup. After a successful career in the English league Lacey returned to Shelbourne for a second spell in May 1925 and helped them win the League of Ireland title in 1926. Lacey joined Everton in February 1909 and made his club debut leading the forward line in April 1909 against Bradford City. He made 37 English league appearances with the Blues and scored 11 goals. In 1912 Lacey joined Liverpool and made his debut on the left wing on 2nd of March

1912. He scored his first goal for the club on 6th March in a 2-1 home defeat to Spurs. Lacey would eventually make 230 league appearances and score 18 league goals for Liverpool. He also made a further 28 appearances and scored another 11 goals in the FA Cup. During the first world war Lacey returned to Ireland and played first for Belfast United and then Linfield who he helped reach two successive Irish Cup finals in 1918 and 1919. After returning to Liverpool Lacey helped them win two first division titles in 1922 and 1923. Lacey left Liverpool in June 1924 and briefly played with New Brighton before returning to Shelbourne Between 1909 and 1924 Lacey won 23 caps and scored 3 goals for the IFA XI. He made his international debut on 13 February 1909 in a 4–0 defeat to England and then on 20 March he scored his first international

goal in a 3–2 defeat against Wales. On 14 February he scored twice as Ireland beat England 3–0 at Ayresome Park. In a game which saw Lacey play in three different positions, including in goal, Ireland then clinched the title following a 1–1 draw with Scotland at Windsor Park in Belfast. He made his last appearance for the IFA XI in 1924 in 3– 1 defeat against England. A f t e r re t u r n i n g t o Shelbourne, Lacey also made 3 appearances and scored 1 goal for the FAI XI. On 23 April 1927, at the age of 37, he became the oldest player to ever make his debut for the FAI XI when he was selected to play against Italy B. On 12 February 1928 he inspired the FAI XI to a comeback. 2–0 down at half-time, Lacey scored the FAI XI's opening goal in a 4–2 away win against Belgium. On 11 May 1930, at the age of 41, he became the oldest player ever to play for the FAI XI when he played against Belgium again. – Joseph Doyle

IT waSn’T only aMber ThaT wenT MISSIng! if like me you were glued to your TV sets for four nights expecting a great ending to what rTE said was an exciting new drama series, well we were left disappointed by the ending of amber. This led to 71 complaints to rTE and the nation’s radio stations’ switchboards were jammed. Personally for me – RTE it’s a case of three strikess and you’re out! This is the second crime drama you’ve mucked up. You did the same with Love Hate. Cop on will you! No wonder you’re losing audiences to British dramas like Broadchurch and Ripper Street. OK back to Amber. A young girl goes missing in Dublin while her father drops her off at her friend’s house. She goes in, he drives away and sees her in the rear view mirror. When he’s out of sight she goes walkabouts and

goes missing. She is reported missing to the Gardai when she fails to return home. This was badly written by Rob Cawley and Gary Duggan. The producer made a statement on the Ryan Tubridy show when Ryan asked him what happened to Amber he replied “I think she died”.

CongraTulaTIonS…  Congrats to Killian Doyle from the Moyne who was the only Wexford man to be commissioned as an officer in the Curragh recently. Killeian is the oldest son of Ann and Liam Doyle.  Congratulations to Podge Dwyer on the release of his new single Demons II. Podge is currently in the Orchard R e c o rd i n g S t u d i o s i n Enniscorthy laying down the tracks for his new EP.  Well done to Colaiste Bride, Enniscorthy, on their recent junior college win.

 Happy birthday to Harry Ryan, Joe Carley and Tom Bosley. Also happy 40th to Ray Kehoe and a significant birthday for Brigid Fusciardi (nee Barry).  Happy 90th birthday to Tom Conroy – well known in the racehorse game as a successful trainer.  Apologies, in our last issue we named Aoife Mackin as having her 21st, it should have been Roisin Mackin. If you have a birthday wish or wedding or would like a mention please email: doyleduffry@gmail.com. – Joseph Doyle

I thought the father, Ben, was very badly written. He was trying to be Liam Neeson in Taken. He was as wooden as a child’s rocking horse. The female leads were very good – Lauryn Canny was excellent as Amber, Eva Birthistle was excellent as the mother. Another few criticisms

folks – the journalist was crap. First of all I don't think a journalist writing a missing person’s case would be related to the family. And she broke the journalists’ code – you don't reveal your sources and you don't hand over your notes like she did. The fact that none of the neighbours went to look for Amber was a mistake. Also I don't think the Gardaí would ever bring just one subaqua diver to look for a missing person in the river. Director Thaddeus O’Sullivan directed a very bad show with a very bad ending. I suppose they were trying to make a point that there is no closure to a missing person’s case. In conclusion two things went missing – the girl and the ending. RTE one more strike and you’re out! – Joseph Doyle

well Done CarolIne… Well done to Enniscorthy writer, Caroline Busher, who was shortlisted for the Bord Gais Energy Short Stories Award in December. Caroline’s entry, Noah and the Snowflake Princess, lost out to Karen Quinn’s The Star and the Tree but Caroline said it was a honour just to be shortlisted. Caroline could well be the next great writer to come from Enniscorthy and she could well be the next JK Rowling. So, readers, we have another hidden gem in our midst. Caroline is now surely a member of the Enniscorthy writers club joining Mogue Doyle, Eamonn Wall, Colm Toíbín, Peter Murphy, etc. in the Enniscorthy Writers Hall of Fame. Best of luck Caroline. – Joseph Doyle

Cystic Fibrosis Cystic Fibrosis or CF is the most common potentially fatal inherited disease the world has today. This country now has about 1,500 sufferers of CF. By and large people with CF look like any one of us, they live ordinary lives and carry on daily routines. This disease affects lungs, glands and also affects the reproductive system. Medication is a necessity for people who suffer with CF. They might be affected by diabetes, arthritis, osteoporosis and a host of other infections. This disease does not discriminate, it affects all ages from the young to middle aged however not so much the very old, at least not yet. I am one of those who hope some day our world will have no sickness of any kind. Just imagine a world without disease or sickness of any kind. Is it a dream or will only time tell.

Ann and Joe Doyle. Pic: Donal Cullen.

A well known Enniscorthy family are currently raising awareness of Cystic Fibrosis. Ann Doyle and son, Joe, continually fundraise putting on various events such as coffee mornings. Joe and Ann represent the Cystic Fibrosis Association of Ireland. To date the Doyle family have organised about 23 different gigs with local artists but these events could be better supported. Joe hopes that by raising public awareness more people will support this really good cause. I met Ann and Joe recently. Ann said that the highest number of CF sufferers in the world are in Ireland (a fact I did not know) and the second highest is Australia. There will be CF fundraising from Feb 28 to April 5th, including a coffee morning in Doyles of the Duffry. All are welcome. Watch the local media for more information on this event and others. – Donal Cullen

A Friend of Mine A friend of mine called today Telling me things of great sadness Witha tear in her eye Her friend had something called Cystic Fibrosis And dare not live another day. I could not comprehend the Hidden cry in her eye. It will be alright on the night Just a bad year for the roses. A friend of mine called today Giving me news of great joy Her friend gave birth to a baby boy With a smile on her face And dared to live another day In her hand a bunch of roses And not so much Cystic Fibrosis.

The Scaldy Detail 2013 launch The 2013 edition of The SCalDy DeTaIl, a collection of new creative writing from Co. Wexford will be launched on Thursday February 6th by Minister Paul Kehoe, Td, in The Presentation Centre, E n n i s c o r t h y, a t 8 . 3 0 p m . Published by Scallta Media, this exciting publication will be available to purchase at the launch or online at www.scalltamedia.com. Paul O’Reilly of Scallta Media says: “The response to the request for submissions for this issue of The Scaldy Detail has b e e n o v e r w h e l m i n g . We received so many high-quality submissions that it would have been easily possible to produce a volume of triple this length. However, now that funding is no longer available for such ventures as ours, we were forced to make difficult decisions. We are certain that you will enjoy the fruits of our writers’ labours. There’s plenty more where this came from”, Paul added. The editor of the compilation, Maggie Breen, says: “Scallta Media had a massive response to their call, the biggest ever in fact. It was a tough choice, but

overall the writing here is clear and precise. And that’s how it should be. There is no need to dress it up when writing from the heart, which the authors in this anthology do with such courage.” Taking about the content Maggie added: “It takes courage to write and share one’s very soul with the world. Writing opens wounds in the heart, it dances between love and loss, pain and pleasure. It gives people a voice, it empowers, it is magical. Writing can help fix something that's broken, it can help people find their way. That’s why, in a climate of turmoil that seems to trickle into

every corner and dampen joy, it’s heartening to see so many people writing, determined to figure out the state we're in, one word, one sentence at a time.” Niall Wall of Scallta Media says: “The Scaldy Detail 2013 follows the tradition of quality creative writing that has characterised earlier editions and which has drawn such praise from all quarters. The current book is a celebration of the strong voice of Irish writers who articulate their thoughts, emotions and view of a complex world with clarity, beauty and no small amount of energy. Great credit is due to all involved in the production which promises to be a magnificent success.” Internationally renowned writer, and Enniscorthy native, Colm Tóibín, speaking about the 2011 edition of The Scaldy Detail, said: "There are moments when you’re reading this of absolute pure recognition, where you can enter someone else’s spirit and be with them on that journey. In reading this anthology, you get that sense of things being named for the first time, being placed in a context for the first time, of being offered to the outside world. It was an absolute delight to read this." Founded in 2007, SCALLTA MEDIA is an independent publishing initiative located in Enniscorthy that has been created to discover, promote, publish, record and release original creative work and it has growing online sales of niche productions. All are welcome to attend the launch on Thursday February 6th in The Presentation Centre, admission is free, and refreshments will be served. Proceedings begin at 8.30pm.

Another local literary talent andrew Hughes who hails from Clonhaston and is the son of Kevin and Margaret Hughes would describe himself as a historical novelist, yet his book The Convictions of John Delahunt has been shortlisted for the bord gais Energy ireland book awards - Crime Fiction book of the year 2013. i would describe him as the next great literary talent to emerge Slaneyside. The Convictions of John Delahunt tells the story of a Dublin Castle Informer in the mid 19th century who progresses from informing on friends and acquaintances to committing crimes and framing others for them – particularly the crime of murder as the reward for a murder conviction is £60 – so murder is where the money is. John Delahunt is eventually caught for the murder of a young boy Thomas Maguire and we meet him in his prison cell in Kilmainham Jail where he recounts his bizarre life before going to the gallows. We journey with him through Victorian Dublin from the high society ballrooms to the sleazy taverns, impoverished tenements and festering alleyways of a dark and smouldering city. Perhaps

not a story and certainly not a central character that one would be immediately drawn to but Andrew Hughes tells it so skilfully and so elegantly that you actually empathise with this convicted murderer. It is a wonderfully told tale, the planning and execution is splendid and the writing is nothing short of beautiful. Enniscorthy Librarian Jarlath Glynn was lavish in his praise for this unassuming young author who had his first reading at Enniscorthy Library on Thursday 30th January and was delighted to have it in his hometown.

In the big January snow of 1963 My dad made a bits and pieces toboggan For my younger brother Padraig and me And pulled us across the back road to Parkton Where my mam who had left us two days before Stood in a window on the second floor Holding a small bundle up for us to see What my dad said was our new sister Jackie Now our white cat Princess had followed our mam All the way across the back road to Parkton Where she became a favourite with each nun And when mam came home she refused to return We were scolded for crying over that fickle cat We had a new sister now and that was that Forget that old feline and be happy with your lot And always remember a swop is a swop Well the nuns are long gone and so is that kitty A fair trade in the end as we still have our Jackie.

Lover come to me let me hold you Let me hold you in my dream, Take you down to the meadow. Today you’re hot, have I lost the plot I’m crazy on you, lover come to me Boy loves girl, and girl loves boy Please come back to me, give love A chance, save the last dance.

O the music of autumn come hush my stride, On mandolin- pipes, foliage finds the soil, The reds and browns gather at your feet, The meadows lustre and rise away into the pall,

Coffee for one is not so great When you don’t have the one you love In your corner to hold hands. To smile back at you, I’m living a life without you Your tease to please. I’m crazy on you, lover come to me I love you give me a chance And save the last dance.

A vague mountain rim invisible to the throat, From here, I can just amass summers adieu, A fond Hurrah for dawning absolute song, Honey-throated songbirds quietened in season, The raven courses and ridges towards winter’s gates, Dark tarnishing clouds threaten the twilight moth, Ever lusting in confusion the parlour light, Aslant drizzle, ferries in on a comatose, dormer wind, Heat pipes clatter and the hearth trembles in the core, The old Shepard’s sheephook leas in the kitchen hall, Of winter snows and a ‘cold one’ witters in whispers, Of Autumn-Winter, all but a confused teenage drab.

St. Aidan’s Pupils pledge to shine their light for the Pioneers! A big congratulations to the 6th class pupils from St. Aidan’s Primary School, Enniscorthy, who were recently enrolled as junior members of the Pioneer Total Abstinence Association. 65 pupils took the pledge publicly at a Mass for Temperance in St. Aidan’s Cathedral on Sunday 26th January 2014. They pledged to abstain from alcohol until the age of eighteen and to abstain from harmful drugs for life. They were presented with their Pioneer pins and prayer cards. Spiritual Director Fr. Richard Lawless Adm. asked the community to support the young people by giving Christian witness in their own lives.

The Sacrament of Confirmation is the next major step after Baptism in a child’s faith journey. Preparations for this special day began last September when a Confirmation preparation committee was formed between the clergy, the teachers and the parents, each having a particular role to play in the handing on of the beautiful gift of faith.
