A great day’s entertainment is on the cards for Enniscorthy on St. Patrick’s Day, 17th March. The programme starts at 2.00pm with entertainment in the Market Square consisting of music, dancing and children's entertainment with free face-painting. At 3.00pm the Street Parade commences with pike charging rebels and musket-wielding redcoats battling through the streets of Enniscorthy as part of this year's St. Patrick’s Day Parade. Two marching bands will lend colour to the occasion: the
Northfield Caledonia Pipes & Drums, Birmingham, and St. Colman’s Pipe Band, Ballindaggin. Enniscorthy Castle will provide free family fun with free bouncy castles and facepainting from 12 noon on St. Patrick’s Day. Normal admission prices apply for Castle tour, etc. The 1798 Centre will celebrate St. Patrick’s Day by offering an attractive 2 for 1 on admission to the “Rebellion Experience” for four days only – Saturday 15th to Tues 18th March. ■

Wexford GAA Rewards Excellence Wexford gaels gathered in numbers at The Talbot Hotel on Friday 14th February to honor the men and women who make our games unique, passionate, breathtaking, heart stopping, and above all entertaining. At the Glen Fuels/Wexford Supporters Valentine Ball Player of the Year event, awards were presented in 7 categories – Senior Hurling, Senior Football, U/21 Hurling, U/21 Football, Camogie, Ladies Football and Handball with the honors going to Eoin Moore, Daithi Waters, Ian Byrne, tied at a draw Lee Chin and Colm Kehoe, Kate Kelly for camogie, and the very young Ellen O’Brien taking the Ladies Football award and the even younger Holly Hynes getting the Handballer of the Year Award. MC for the evening was the irrepressible Mr. Liam Spratt who welcomed the 350 strong attendance and thanked the Sponsor Alan Keyes and Glen Fuels for their marvellous contribution to Wexford GAA and to the prestigious event.
Unfortunately, special guest DJ Carey had to cry off at short notice due to illness and former Kilkenny hurler Billy Murphy stepped in to make the presentation of Leinster medals to our U/21 hurlers. The national Chairman of Ladies Football Mr. Pat Quill was on hand to present All Ireland Runners Up medals to our beautiful and talented Ladies F o o t b a l l e r s a n d A l l I re l a n d Handballer winners were presented with their medals by Mr. Alan Keyes who also made a very special presentation to a very special lady Kate Kelly - 5 times All Ireland winner and 7 times All Star. Not many in the country can boast of same. The unassuming Kate was her usual modest self and remained gracious in her comments despite the cajoling from Mr. Spratt! Sponsor Alan Keyes said that he was delighted to be associated with Wexford GAA and thanked the Wexford Supporters Club for their help and co-operation organising the night. Mr. Keyes said that it was tremendous to see the numbers
that had turned out to celebrate all that is good and positive about Wexford GAA and he looked forward to many good years with them. County Secretary Margaret Doyle standing in for County Chairman Diarmuid Devereux was lavish in her praise of Wexford Supporters Club and in particular Chairman Arthur Quinn, Secretary Tom Boland and P.R.O. Maria Nolan for all their work not just on this event but throughout the year. Wexford GAA would not continue to operate she said without the support of Wexford Supporters Club. Chairman Arthur Quinn thanked all for coming and supporting the cream of Wexford GAA. He paid tribute to Alan Keyes and Glen Fuels for their wonderful sponsorship and endorsement of this very special event on the Wexford GAA Calendar. He complimented all the Nominees and congratulated all the winners and thanked all in attendance for their continued
encouragement and support. Before vacating the stage he complimented the hotel for the excellent meal and service and thanked the Pettitts for all their help to Wexford GAA over the years. One final Award was made before Alan Keyes handed over to the band The Groove to begin the musical part of the evening - The Best Dressed Couple Award was made to Anne and Oliver Furlong. As PRO of Wexford Supporters Club could I say a most sincere thank you to Alan Keyes, Glen Fuels and his expert team who have transformed this occasion into ‘The Event’ on the Wexford GAA social scene and could I take this opportunity to apologise to those who could not get tickets for the night and to those who were inconvenienced in any way on the night. Mrs. Sabina Higgins wore an elegant dress and coat ensemble in shades of deep, rich purple which suited her colouring and complexion and looked chic, sophisticated and comfortable. The document entitled ‘Enhancing our Post Offices: Fianna Fáil’s Vision for the Future of the Irish Post Office Network’ sets out in detail plans for consolidating the existing role of the Post Office network in Wexford while increasing the commercial activity in every office. Deputy Browne commented: “Post Offices in County Wexford are under serious threat, particularly if the network loses its contract to handle social welfare payments. “Post Offices are the heartbeat of so many rural communities in Wexford right across the county. It not only serves as a site for pension and welfare payments; the social benefit to these communities, particularly rural ones, is immeasurable. “Instead of diminishing the financial work that the Post Office network undertakes; Fianna Fáil proposes to enhance and expand An Post’s financial services. Post Offices in Wexford should become a centre for all state payments and charges. “The only way for the Post Office network in Wexford and nationwide to survive and prosper is to expand the services it carries out. While the contract with the Department of Social Protection for social welfare payments is secure for the

Oisin O'Connell said that Post Offices were of crucial importance to their communities, especially rural ones, and said that their true potential had never been explored under Fianna Fail, Fine Gael, and Labour administrations. "Closing Post Offices is unfair and unnecessary," Mr O'Connell said, "If the one stop shop model for post offices was enthusiastically adopted in this state, then not only would there be no need to shut down further offices, but some of the 380 closed units could be reopened. Meanwhile Enniscorthy To w n c o u n c i l l o r, J o h n o’Rourke, has collected over 1,000 signatures on a petition calling on the government not to close the Duffry Street post office which cllr o’Rourke estimates serves between 2,500 and 4,000 people every week. Cllr. O’Rourke, who is a regular user of the Post Office in question, is continuing to gather signatures both on the street and in the post office itself where the petition is available inside the door. He aims to collect up to 5,000 signatures on the petition which he will then present to our local Minister, Paul Kehoe. Cllr O’Rourke believes that closing smaller post offices rips the heart out of the community. People are now going to be forced to access post office services through machines instead of the familar faces they are used to dealing with behind the counter and Cllr O’Rourke believes this is totally unacceptable particularly for elderly people. Cllr O’Rourke’s position is quite clear: “I’m calling on the people of Enniscorthy and Wexford to say ‘no’ to this plan to close 600 post offices.” ■

The AgM of the Enniscorthy community Forum was held at Bellefield gAA complex on Tuesday 18th February with representation from 12 groups in the Enniscorthy area including: Enniscorthy Community Youth Project Bunclody Active Retirement Blackwater Tidy Towns Friends of St Johns Hospital HOPE Cancer Support Centre Old School RestorationGlenbrien Development Group Glenbrien Village renewal Group Oylegate Community Centre PWDW-People with Disabilities, Wexford School Soccer Coaching Scheme Rappstars Social Steppers Rapparees/Starlights GAA Enniscorthy Convenor Maria Nolan welcomed everyone to the AGM, particularly County Chairperson Lucy Medlycott who she said has done tremendous work over the past couple of months revamping and redefining the Forum. Both Lucy and myself were thrown in at the deep end in 2013 Maria said and I think it is fair to say that both of us have been
trying to get a handle on and in some ways re-invent the Forum ever since. The Forum came into being when funding was available and this was the obvious attraction and incentive for the many groups and organisations who became members. Since then unfortunately a lot of the funding has either been severely reduced or has dried up altogether. Maria went on to say that the Forum is now an opportunity for bodies to network, build linkages, consult and be consulted on a wide variety of topics relating to social, economic and cultural development of their own areas and the county overall. There is a wealth of information, experience, expertise and knowledge between the 600 or so groups that make up the County Wexford Community Forum and the sharing of this information and expertise is its real asset. Lucy Medlycott said that over the past 12 months with the assistance of Ger Mackey and Mary T Kehoe of Wexford County Council the Forum’s database and website have been
upgraded and a facebook page has been created and a free Training Programme has been rolled out in Effective Communication and Social Media . Lucy told the members that the Forum gives all a voice in the decision making process with our members on Joint Policing, Access and Transport Committees and some of them sitting on the Board of Wexford Local Development. Maria said that one of the highlights of the year for her was the presentation of the Social Inclusion Grants at the Riverside Park Hotel in November. Eleven groups emerged successful from the 36 different organisations who applied and as Convenor of the Enniscorthy Forum she was delighted to make the presentation to the Bellefield Delightful Dollies and the Rappstars Social Steppers. These small grants are sometimes the lifeline of many of these hard working voluntary organisations enabling them to continue the excellent work they are doing for their own organisations, their communities and the county overall. ■

The gaelscoil inis córthaidh coiste is organising a 5k fun run/1 mile walk on Sunday, April 6th, 2014 to raise funds for the school. Registration for the 5k run is from 9.3010.30am on the 6th at gaelscoil inis córthaidh, Drumgoold, and cost €10. The run commences at 11.00am. The 1 mile walk will commence from the school at 11.15am. Sponsorship cards are available from the Gaelscoil office during school hours or alternatively, if you wish, a small donation could be given on the day.

Congratulations to Enniscorthy Athletic Club Enniscorthy Tidy Town Association At a recent meeting of the Association plans were made for the year ahead and some dismay was expressed at the abolition of the Town council later this year. The recent Raffle and Table Quiz were quite successful and realised €1,808. The committee wishes to thank all who supported the venture and businesses who donated prizes. The Association recently received details of the changed format for this year’s National Tidy Town Competition. The number of categories has been
reduced from 10 to 8 by amalgamating Tidiness and Litter Control into one category and removing the General Impression category. They have also renamed some categories and reviewed the wording under each category in an effort to bring greater clarity as to what the adjudicator is looking for. In addition they have increased the marks allocated in some categories which bring the total marks available to 450. The closing date for entries this year is the end of May.
The Tidy Town Committee expressed general satisfact i o n w i t h t h e p ro p o s e d changes and it is hoped that with a special effort on the part of the people of Enniscorthy we can continue to improve the appearance of the town and increase our marks under the various headings. Rapps/Stars trip the light fantastic Fantastic night at Riverside Park Hotel on Sunday 23rd February as Rapparees/ Starlights hosted Strictly Club Dancing – a night of magical entertainment and glamour as 8 dancing couples took to the stage to trip the light fantastic. And it was certainly a case of Fred and Ginger eat your heart out as the glamorous couples strutted their stuff with extraordinary expertise and poise. Along with that the 500 strong audience were treated to an outstanding display of local entertainment
with the Duffry Stompers, Stephen Murphy, Michael Sullivan, The Boys of Wexford, Denise Gordon, Joe Hogan, Stephen O`Brien, Lucy Doyle, Eoin Groake, Pa Doyle, The Barber Shop Quartet. What a night for €10! As MC the eloquent Jimmy Gahan said “you won’t get better than that anywhere”. Judges for the evening Liam Spratt, Annemarie Cooney and Declan Ruth were blown away by the quality of the dancing and the professional execution of the glittering event.
All of the dancers were winners, Maria Nolan Club Secretary and organiser of the event said, as they had all trained hard, performed exceptionally and acquitted themselves well and raised tremendous funds for Rapparees/Starlights GAA – you won’t beat that she went on and the club owes them a huge debt of gratitude which she also extended to all the performers who didn’t hesitate to give freely of their time to support the club. Maria also thanked Emma Murray on
makeup and Joanne Collins for hair, Matt Deane for the incredible lighting, Anne Gilpin and Duffry Stompers for sound and music and Sinead Reck, dance teacher, for her trojan work over the past few weeks preparing the dancers. The results of the evening were then announced by MC Jimmy Gahan – Suzanne Donohoe and James Donnelly going through to the final on 16th March at the Riverside Park Hotel having raised the most in sponsorship – James and Laura Dobbs going through on the public vote on the night and Matthew Hyland and Anne Ryan going through on the Judges’ vote. Its full steam ahead now for the gala final as Rapparees/ Starlights/Rathnure and Shamrocks GAA dance it out to select the winning couple! Marja van Kampen recently moved to Enniscorthy from Galway where she lived for almost 30 years having spent time in France after graduating from art college in Arnhem, the Netherlands. Her work is held in the collections of the office of An Taoiseach, Aras an Uachtaráin, the Arts Council, Microsoft, the OPW, Radisson Hotel Group as well as a number of private collections. ‘Marja and Dick … were such an integral part of Galway [arts] life and such a lovely presence in the city. Galway is very indebted and grateful to them’.
Singers from across the county who have been taking part in the Wexford Song Project presented a night of Traditional Songs from County Wexford at the Presentation Centre on Thursday 20 February last. Songs featured included some well-known alongside some rare finds and one self-penned song. The project website – www.wexfordsongproject.com – was also officially launched at the event. This website features research and lyrics of Wexford songs which has been compiled by participants, providing a rich resource for anyone interested in traditional songs of County Wexford. This project was funded and supported by Wexford County Council as part of the ‘Artist-in-the-Community Scheme’, The Black Rock Mountain Traditional Singers and The Presentation Centre.

and when she did The Windy City, The Deadwood Stage and My Secret Love she was Doris Day – sounding and looking just like her. A most beautiful and entertaining show the work of writer and director Brendan Cull and musical director Robert Scott and Aileen Donohoe is per-
fectly cast and does such a perfect job that you come away almost convinced that there were three people on stage instead of just her – an exceptionally talented lady. The set is very well assembled and the lighting was subtle and effective. Yet another wonderful talent with an Enniscorthy con-
nection – Aileen Donohoe is the daughter of Jim Donohoe and niece of well known local entertainer Pat Donohoe. Well done again to Mairead Linneen and The Presentation Centre providing us with such enjoyable and affordable entertainment on our doorsteps. – Maria Nolan

A DAte with Doris The varied and outstanding talents of Aileen Donohoe were in evidence on Saturday 15th February as she brought all time favourite Doris Day to life on the stage of the Presentation Art Centre. What a delightful show and what a gifted talent - Aileen Donhoe enchanted the full house with her acting, her singing and her marvellous stage presence as she transported them back to a time of innocence, nostalgia and simplicity. With songs that we were raised on - Que Sera, Sera, On Moonlight Bay, Perhaps, Perhaps, Perhaps, Pillow Talk – we all remembered those old movies and how us girls all kinda liked Doris who wasn’t your classic beauty, who wasn`t always perfect, who got into quiet a bit of harmless trouble, and yet always got the right man and ended up happy ever after. Yes we all had a certain fondness for Doris – she was more like ourselves than some of the other divine divas around at the time – Sophia Loren, Audrey Hephurn, Grace Kelly, Liz Taylor – they were way up there but Doris – now Doris could be and often was the ordinary girl next door and if things could work out well for her – sure they could work out for any of us! Yes Doris Day was the ordinary woman’s favourite. But she could sing good – now that was something we couldn’t all do. And Aileen Donohoe can sing good too – boy but she can

Sharon Shannon will headline the celebrations this St. Patrick’s Day, Monday 17th March, in Wexford Opera House. Sharon, who is famed for her ability to blend traditional Irish music with more modern and exotic styles, graced the Opera house stage at the 2009 Gradam Ceoil Music Awards and prior to that she opened The Late Late show’s live broadcast from the Opera House when it first opened in 2008. Joining Sharon on the night are some of Ireland’s greatest traditional musicians. Jim Murray on acoustic guitar, often referred to as Sharon’s ‘right hand man’, is Ireland’s leading traditional guitarist. Jack Maher, on electric guitar, is an accomplished
musician, singer and songwriter and has played with Van Morrison, Sharon Corr and Eddi Reader. Sean Regan, on fiddle, completes the trio backing Sharon and comes highly regarded as one of the finest fiddle players in the music business today. Sharon, fresh off of the release of her album ‘21’ last year, celebrating a 21 year recording career, shows no signs of letting up, with single releases planned for this year, Sharon continues to be a force to be reckoned with on the Irish music scene. Proceed along Templeshannon Quay, across Séamus Rafter Bridge, past the Reviewing Platform, turn left into Mill Park Road at the Post Office, first right up Friary Hill, turn right into Court Street, Rafter Street, turn left into Weafer Street, along Pig Market Hill, turn right at Doyle’s Corner into Duffry Street along by St. Aidan’s Cathedral and Main Street into the Market Square where the marchers will be diverted down Slaney Street.
Floats, Vehicles etc will join the Parade at Séamus Rafter Bridge after all the marchers pass by and turn left at the Post Office and proceed along Mill Park Road to Arnold’s Cross where they turn right at the 1798 Centre and proceed along Parnell Road and rejoin the marchers on Duffry Hill. It is hoped that some of the larger vehicles and coaches will divert on to Nunnery Road at Doyle’s Corner as they cause a lot of congestion in the Market Square. For safety reasons horse-drawn vehicles are not allowed down Main Street by the Cathedral.

Heading for Hollywood Sam O'Shea is an 18 year old student from Wexford and a musical theatre singer and performer. Sam is currently training with internationally renowned Soprano and Vocal Coach Deirdre Masterson and has performed with numerous musical societies including
Wexford Light Opera Society, Oyster Lane Theatre Group, Wexford School of Ballet & Performing Arts, Wexford Pantomime Society and Centre Stage School of Dance Waterford. Sam has also performed on the Late Late Toy Show. He recently won the AIMS Choral Festival Best
Male Singer and performed in the Wexford Opera Festival’s production of 'La Navaraise'. Sam has been chosen to represent Ireland at the prestigious World Championship of Performing Arts in Hollywood, Los Angeles next July for two weeks. “In Zanadu did Kubla Khan A stately pleasure dome decree Where Alph, the sacred river ran Through caverns measureless to man down to a sunless sea” This poem by Samuel Taylor Coleridge describes Zanadu or Xanadu as a “dream place of magnificence and luxury”. Well Enniscorthy has its own Zanadu and it was indeed the dream place of owner – the beautiful and bubbly Louise Bernie, who used to dream about owning the premises as she passed it each day or her way home from school. So there must be something in this visuali-
sation thing! Louise, who is also an interior designer, always had a keen interest in fashion and always dreamed of owning her own fashion outlet. That dream became a reality nine years ago when Louise set up business in Maniac on Castle Street selling young men’s fashions having found a niche in the Enniscorthy market. Four years later she began a small womenswear section as the sales in men’s clothes dwindled due to the growing recession. Christmas 2009 and Louise’s dream premises became available
to rent and in a whirlwind she found herself trading on Main Street where she had always wanted to be and began to believe in Santa again! Louise has been there ever since and meets her customers with a friendly smile and a lot of good advice. The Spring/Summer trends for 2014 are cool white, black and white and also pretty icy pastels and, she says, lots of boxy cropped jackets in a variety of prints and colours, perfect over body con dresses, tailored trousers, skirts and jeans. Boxy leather jackets in bold vibrant colours, bomber jackets and sweaters
A Woman of Substance… that is how I would describe the lovely Laura Mullett. She is bubbly, she is lively, she’s vivacious, she’s intelligent, she’s interesting, she knows her stuff but above all else, at only 24, she is a Woman of Substance. Over tea and scones at the Riverside Park Hotel – local girl Laura kept me enthralled with tales of fashion shoots, top class models, well known photographers, Press Days and Fashion Weeks. She has only just returned from New York’s fashion whirlwind week. On the surface it all sounds soo exciting and exotic but Laura makes it quiet clear that it is all very hard work and sometimes as a freelancer she is working 7 days a week. Journalist, Press Stylist, Image Consultant, Blogger and Social Media Addict, Laura loves what she does and works extremely hard at it – a typical Press Shoot can
last up to 12 hours she tells me. Laura studied and took her degree in journalism and quickly turned to her passion – fashion – even before she left college. This lady is self-made using social media, in particular blogging to put herself out there and get her work known and respected. She has managed to carve out a blossoming career for herself and is to be highly commended. This girl does not sit back and wait for things to happen – she makes them happen. Paola is a native of Cassino in Italy. Cassino is probably best known from the movie about Monte Casino and the battle of the Allies against the German forces in World War II. As a young man Paolo was educated in Cassino and gained the benefits of hard physical work from his job in the stone quarries with his father. He progressed academically and studied for the priesthood with the Salesian Fathers, but his love of people and his desire for improvement created impatience in the young man so he left the pastoral studies to concentrate on the restaurant business. He learned his cooking skills in Fiuggi in the Italian Province of Frosinone. Paolo was a cruise-ship chef for five seasons and so knows about catering for large groups. He also attended chef school in Bad Reichenhall in Germany. He then joined the Italian army and later plied his culinary trade in Germany and then moved to Dublin before settling in Enniscorthy in 2006. His Weafer Street premises is about 100 metres from the statue of Fr John Murphy of 1798 Rebellion fame. Paolo is the president of the Italian Federation of Chefs for Ireland and is also president of Ciao Italia, the association for Italian restauranteurs. Paolo's skills at Italian cuisine, which is much loved by Irish people and people all over the world, have been lauded and promoted by the well known food critic Paolo Tullio and he has many awards including the Hospitalita Italiana. Paolo, his partner Diana, and all the team at Via Veneto create the essential Italian experience for the visitor and take delight in making you feel welcome.

On Weds 29th January 2014, Wexford County Hall hosted a reception for Gathering initiatives that took place across Co. Wexford in 2013.

A brand new App developed by Visit Wexford and managed by Wexford Chamber is currently under construction and will be launched officially by midMarch. There were 110 players in total taking part in that section, a mixture of children and adults. All the Enniscorthy club players played really well, and all finished in the top half of the table, with Dean Copeland coming joint 3rd. The club’s adult section is growing week by week, with some of the juniors staying on to play the adults after their own coaching finishes. The club meets in

Enterprise Board breeds success Wexford County Enterprise Board-supported firms pumped an estimated €6m extra in wages into the local economy in 2013 through an increase in 145 jobs on 2012 figures. The importance of the enterprise board to the locality has been highlighted with the announcement of Wexford County Enterprise Board’s end of year results for 2013. A value of €6 million has been put on the net gain of 145 jobs created by companies backed by Wexford County Enterprise Board (CEB) in County Wexford during 2013. A total of 1,331 full time jobs, were in place in Wexford CEB supported companies, at the end of 2013 up from 1,186 jobs in 2012. This sees job creation and retention on the recovery path from a downward trend in recent years. “These jobs have been created as a result of direct financial assistance provided by Wexford CEB and represent 331 companies that we currently work with,” says Tom Banville, Chief Executive Officer of Wexford County Enterprise Board. traded services. Businesses and aspiring entrepreneurs also benefit from training and mentoring. Business training contributes to growth In 2013 Wexford CEB hosted 79 business development training courses and workshops, networking events and other programmes to assist with the development and establishment of enterprises in County Wexford. These events were attended by 1,021 entrepreneurs, small business owners and their staff. The mentor programme was again very popular with SMEs in the county with 179 mentor applications received in 2013 and 632 mentor meetings taking place between mentors and business owners. “The Board will continue to work in partnership with various organisations in County Wexford to continue to support business start-ups, growth and jobs creation. It is important that enterprise development is embraced across a spectrum of organisations and that employment creation is kept as the main agenda item for 2014,” concluded Mr Banville. ■

Enniscorthy Town Council met on Tuesday 14th January at the Presentation Centre to decide on commercial rates for 2014. The authority decided on a 0% increase on the rate from last year which is the sixth year in a row that annual rates have not been increased.

with the Moyne Veterinary Clinic In each Slaney News the Moyne Veterinary Clinic deals with various issues relating to animals. This month, Joe Kavanagh takes a look at our pets’ digestive systems. My cat Cody wasn't feeling too well last week. He came into the house, threw up a few times and then had diarrhoea too. Needless to say there was lots of scrubbing and cleaning in the aftermath but he still seemed to be his cheerful self. I began to think… well what's really going on with him? I feed him on one of the better ranges of kibble and he's usually fine with it. I reckoned maybe it was all the stress and all the tooing and froing of people coming and going in the house over the last few weeks but there was more to it.
This month we have a 4 month old female mini Jack Russell terrier and a black and white 8 month old male looking for a home. Both are wormed and vaccinated. Homechecks apply. We also have lots of other pets looking for homes, please contact us for fur-

A local contributor looks at life today in Enniscorthy and beyond eMergency ServiceS Since the last column we have gone through what can only be described as a brutal weather experience. Storm Darwin wreaked total havoc across the entire country with Co. Wexford being hit particularly hard. In the midst of all this our emergency services such as E.S.B. staff, council workers, fire and ambulance crews and gallant volunteers all came out to assist in very extreme and difficult conditions. A vote of thanks to them all for their efforts on our behalf. They made a difficult situation a little more bearable and it’s great to see that such spirit still exists in this country. and Speaking oF eMergency ServiceS… What service is more relevant than the RNLI Lifeboat Service. On Saturday night 22nd February the Missus and myself travelled to the County Hall in Wexford to support the said service who were the beneficiaries of a concert given by the Wexford Sinfonia. Well what a night. The Sinfonia appropriately used the occasion to honour the men of the Helen Blake lifeboat who suffered many losses 100 years ago as they attempted to rescue the crew of the Mexico which had run aground just off the Wexford coast. All proceeds of the concert went to
the lifeboat service and the place was packed. This is not surprising when, apart from the good cause, the talent of the Wexford Sinfonia is considered. This orchestra is professional in everything but the rewards they reap and is equal to anything we will see on television or anywhere else. So highly regarded is the orchestra that TG4 has recorded them and they are shortly to perform at the National Concert hall in Dublin. We should be proud that such talent exists within our community and that those who possess it make it available to assist such worthy causes. Well done all. Mortgage Sale A disturbing issue which has raised its head in recent times is the Government allowing the liquidator of the former Anglo Irish Bank sell off mortgages to foreign vulture funds. The Minister for Finance tells us that his priority is to get as much money as possible for the mortgages. That is the only interest of the government. Bear in mind that not all these mortgages are in arrears, even if they were the sale would still be wrong. By selling my or your mortgage to a vulture fund the liquidator is effectively throwing you to the mercy of financial mercenaries who have no interest other than making a huge

On top of this they have probably bought the mortgage at about 40% of its value and will nail you for every single cent of the full value of the mortgage. This is an extremely dangerous precedent because if this works the next people to be targeted will be those in arrears to other banks and those on loss making
tracker mortgages. This matter is far more serious for every mortgage holder in the country than anyone is realizing. The media are only giving it minor coverage and it will be too late to do anything about it when I or you get a letter from some fund in Japan or America telling us that we have 30 days to clear our mortgage in full or get out. Every mortgage document is full of get out clauses for the bank but very little for the consumer so effectively the bank can do what they like with the mortgages. This is a serious matter for every mortgage holder in the country and the time has arrived for us to tell our government in no uncertain terms
Bad driving Bad, reckless and downright dangerous driving takes many forms. I could go on for pages outlining aspects of everyday craziness on our roads. However I will dwell on one small aspect of this problem. Driving on unmarked secondary or county roads. When will drivers realize that just because the road hasn’t got a white line down the centre that the rule of driving on the left still applies. I don’t know how many times over the past few years that only God or sheer skill has kept me alive as I dodged idiots in cars coming towards my vehicle totally on the wrong side of the road as they rounded a bend on an unmarked road. How we don’t see more accidents I don’t know. So remember keep to the left and save lives, probably your own. legal ServiceS contractS Hardly a week goes by without someone in business telling me about the pressure that they are being put under by either the Town Council or County Council in relation to the payment of rates and
other charges. This pressure usually takes the form of letters from the councils’ solicitors demanding payment and outlining in great detail the consequences of failing to pay. (No difference between can’t pays and won’t pays). However the interesting question is how are these legal firms appointed and how much ratepayers’ money are they being paid? Is there open competition for the position of council solicitor and how often are the posts advertised. How much public money has been paid out in fees to these firms over the last five years and how does it compare with similar legal firms, say in Wales or Scotland. Maybe some of our councilors would do the public a service and raise this matter and publish the answer. and Finally Hopefully Spring is here and the next big set of events in Co. Wexford will be the celebration of St. Patricks Day. Let’s hope that all our towns and villages will have good turnouts and that most of us will support the local parades and events rather than leave the county for the day. Remember every few euro spent locally will go towards supporting local businesses and jobs. Let’s hope we all have a good one. n

last month enniscorthy athletic club (eac)’s colin nolan travelled to the national Juvenile all Star awards in tullamore to receive the 2013 national Star for wexford. this is a fantastic achievement for the 18-year-old athlete in what was his last season in Juvenile competition. It has been a steady upward spiral for Colin who in 2010, 2011 and 2012 received the Leinster version of the award. Colin hopes to continue his progress and to secure the National Senior Athlete of the Year Award some day. A few days ago Colin had the honour of accepting the prestigious Brother Egan Cup on behalf of EAC being, for the first time, the club with the best record in the Wexford County

motoring news round-up this month small cars seem to be having a moment with renault, Peugeot, toyota and citroen all revealing plans for new city cars. the renault twingo promises to be a treat with its unusual rear wheel drive and rear mounted engine layout to create a roomier and more agile city
car. at the geneva Motor Show later this month, the Peugeot 108, toyota aygo and citroen c1 will all be shown in the metal for the first time. There is great value to be had with small city cars, like the excellent Skoda Citigo, Seat Mii and Hyundai i10,
the latter which has just gone on sale in Ireland. I have recently been enjoying the company of a Fiat 500S and it has reminded me of the merits of small cars. Cheap to own and run, compact, agile, and the modern ones offer more big car comfort than ever before.
A review of the Fiat 500S will be coming soon but in the meantime I hope you enjoy this month’s review of the Honda Civic hatchback. The hatchback has recently been joined by an estate version for those looking for more cargo space. The Civic Tourer is priced from €25,695. n
honda civic review by Caroline Kidd honda has developed a brand new diesel engine that has been cited as a game changer for them in the irish market. equipping the honda civic with a 1.6 litre diesel engine puts the civic in a good position to compete for more market share in the popular family hatchback segment. A 2.2 litre diesel and two petrol engines are already offered in the Civic range, but the addition of the 1.6 litre diesel is more in keeping with the current Irish appetite for small low emission diesels. The first thing that strikes you about the Civic is the styling. It’s sharp and angular and looks like nothing else in its class. The new Civic is lower and wider than the previous model and has been designed with aerodynamic efficiency in mind, resulting in a sporty, athletic profile. LED daytime running lights and 16” inch alloys fitted as standard add to the dynamism. Inside the Civic feels very different to European competitors. While there are a lot of hard plastics about, the quality of the cabin is very g o o d . I t ’ s w e l l s c re w e d together and I can’t imagine bits falling off within a few weeks, months or years. Inspiration for the Civic’s interior came from cockpits of jet fighter planes and race cars and the instruments wrap around the driver’s seat. I was driving the entry level SE model but it didn’t feel budget or basic. Standard levels of equipment are good including six airbags, alarm, climate control air condi-

tioning, Hill Start Assist, electric front and rear windows and steering wheel mounted audio controls. For Bluetooth, cruise control and a rear reversing camera you will need to go up to ES trim. The rear reversing camera might be worthy of consideration as though I loved the styling of the car I wasn’t so keen on the rear spoiler that splits your view out the rear window. Visibility towards the rear corners of the car is poor but it is probably something you get used to. For a family car, the Civic is roomy and there are lots of storage spaces dotted throughout and a big, deep boot. The rear doors open at 900, handy for accessing the rear seats, and the rear seats can be folded down or rearranged in a variety of ways thanks to Honda’s innovative “Magic Seats”. You can even flip up the rear seat cushions to carry tall objects. So what is it like to drive? Very good. The engine is quiet and refined with just a faint gurgle when you put your foot down. The 1.6 i-DTEC is fitted with idle stop technology as standard and offers
an impressive combination of power (120bhp) and torque (300Nm) with CO2 emissions of just 94 g/km. There is plenty of oomph in this engine and it is easy to keep the car in its power band. Honda is quoting a massive 78mpg for this car. I got over 60mpg so it is very economical car. I liked the way the speedometer advises you on how your driving style is impacting fuel economy by changing blue to green when the car is being driven economically. It’s difficult to fault the Civic. It’s well designed inside and out and enjoyable to drive,

local Fianna Fáil td, John Browne, says motorists in wexford are waiting up to 8 weeks to have their driving licences processed which is causing a huge amount of frustration and anger. the delay is of particular concern to those who depend on driving licences for their jobs. According to John Browne: “Hundreds of people in Wexford are facing delays of up to 8 weeks for their driving licences, it is totally unacceptable. Some motorists in Wexford have come to my office deeply concerned at the lengthy delays. They need driving licenses for their jobs; companies that use transport as part of their service need fully qualified and accredited drivers, without a licence these people cannot be employed. People going on holidays cannot rent cars and people living abroad who come home to renew their licenses are leaving the country without their updated licence. This is reaching crisis proportions and the seriousness of the situation must be recognised by the Government. “This has come about because the administration of the service in Wexford was taken off Wexford County Council and transferred to the National Driving Licence Service (NDLS) centres. We all accept that there may have been teething problems at the start but this has been ongoing for 5 months. “I cannot understand how the system was taken from local authorities when it seemed to be working fine as it was. “What has made the situation worse is that motorists throughout Wexford don't know if or when they will receive their licences. We need to see some solutions being offered by Minister Leo Varadkar on this, motorists should at the very least be told when they should expect to receive their licences.”

hISTory on our DoorSTEp The Great war, world war I, 1914-1918 or the Shamrock and the poppy young lives in Wexford. The exact number of Irish who died in the Great War is listed as anything from 27,000 to 55,000 depending on what figures are taken. The Irish War Memorial records quote a figure of 49,400, the Registrar General's official return was 27,405, while other sources state that it was nearer to 30,000. The total recorded deaths on land from County Wexford was about 500. Those killed in battle arenas other than on land are not listed, except in very few circumstances.
on the 28th of June 1914 the archduke Franz Ferdinand, heir presumptive to the austro-hungarian throne, was assassinated in Sarajevo by gavrilo Princip, a Serbian anarchist. the murder of the archduke was the spark that lit the fuse that caused the explosion that ignited all of europe in the form of the great war 1914-1918. John redmond was a member of parliament at the time. John redmond and recruitment in wexford Britain entered the war in 1914 and immediately introduced conscription. For political reasons this was never extended to Ireland, but members of the Anglo-Irish community were quick to join the ranks and defend the Empire. John
Redmond, leader of the Home Rule party urged members of the Catholic community to enlist, believing that Ireland would be given Home Rule as a reward for its support. Speaking at the Parade of Irish Vo l u n t e e r s o n t h e 2 0 t h September 1914 at Woodenbridge, Co. Wicklow, he declared: 'The war is undertaken in defence of the highest principle of religion and morality and right, and it would be a disgrace for ever to our country, and a reproach to her manhood, and a denial of the lessons of her history, if young Ireland confined their efforts to remaining at home to defend the shores of Ireland from an unlikely invasion, and shrunk from duty of proving on the field of battle that gallantry and courage which has
distinguished our race through its history.' Stories of German atrocities in Catholic Belgium were a further incentive to join. (These rumours were gratefully used by the British propaganda machine). In Wexford, men from both religious backgrounds enlisted. Many men had joined the armed forces before the war as the army provided secure employment and a comparatively good income at a time of high unemployment and low wages. the number of irish casualties Many of those who enlisted would not return. Wexford hosts successful Sinn Fein Ard Fheis the Sinn Féin ard Fheis held in wexford’s opera house on the 7th and 8th of February is estimated to have earned the county over €2 million in revenue. Speaking after his live RTE address, Sinn Féin President Gerry Adams thanked the people of Wexford for welcoming delegates and visitors and insisted that many had already booked another visit to the county. Local Cllr Johnny Mythen said that he believed the success of the Ard Fheis would silence some of the more vocal critics of his party in the county.

wexford’s guitar legend, declan Sinnott, was given a civic reception last month in his home town. The musician and record producer who has worked with Horslips, Moving Hearts, Mary and Frances Black and with Christy Moore (for 30 years) among others was formally honoured by the Mayor of Wexford, Cllr. George Lawlor, and the Borough Council. The talented guitarist, now residing in Cork, grew up in Wexford town where he still has family members. Declan continues to play with Christy Moore but has also released his first solo album of original songs 'I Love The Noise It Makes'.

Waxing lyrical down Slaneyside
i was indeed very privileged on thursday 6th Feb to have my poem in memory of my dad Martin doyle included in the latest edition of the Scaldy detail, the company being both overwhelming and illustrious and the response for material massive - the greatest number of submissions to date! ‘Tis no wonder I felt privileged and somewhat overawed to be among the chosen literary diamonds - Eamonn Wall, Peter Murphy, Denis Collins, Margaret Galvin, Paddy Kehoe, Helen Gaynor, Mogue Doyle, Larry Kirwan, John
Kelly, Helena Mulkerns, Mary O`Brien, Niall Wall, Paul O`Reilly, Suzanne Power and many more! This is the fourth anthology of new writing Slaneyside there being Scaldy Detail Publications in 2005, 2007, 2011 and now the 2013 Edition which includes seven short stories and over 46 poems sure as MC for the evening Niall Wall pointed out `You can`t throw a stone in Enniscorthy without hitting a writer`. The 2013 Edition was compiled and edited by local Poet the lovely, elfin like Maggie Breen who had a warm, welcoming smile for the large attendance as she stressed the difficult task she had choosing the work that would appear in the book. She says “It was a tough choice, but overall the writing here is clear and precise. And that`s how it should be. There is no need to dress it up when writing from the heart.” Which is certainly the case in this anthology as you will see from reading pieces like Survivor, Redundant, The October Revolution, Last Act, Listening for the Dead and others where the writer opens

in what is now considered the oscars of the opera world, wexford Festival opera received an impressive four nominations in the 2nd annual international opera awards announced last month at a press conference at the royal opera house, covent garden. For the second year in succession, Wexford was shortlisted in the Best Festival alongside category Glyndebourne, Aix-enProvence and the Rossini festival in Pesaro. In addition, Wexford Festival Opera was also nominated in the categories of Best Chorus, along with The Met and Bayreuth and Best Re-discovered work for Cristina, regina de Svezia. Australian Soprano Helena Dix, who sang the title role of Cristina, was also nominated in the Best Young Singer category, based on her critically acclaimed performance in Wexford last October. Upon receiving news of the nominations, Chairman of Wexford Festival Opera, Ger Lawlor said, “2013 was a vintage year at Wexford and these nominations confirm
that. We are delighted that the International reputation of the festival under the stewardship of David Agler, our Artistic Director, continues to flourish and has been recognised by these prestigious awards. We are ever grateful to The Arts Council for their continued support.” The winners will be announced at a gala award ceremony on Monday, 7 April, 2014 at Grosvenor House Hotel, Park Lane, London. Art exhibition by Marja van Kampen officially opened last month in The Presentation Centre, Enniscorthy, by Sabina Higgins, wife of President Michael D Higgins. The exhibition runs to 29th March.
The Artist and The First Lady i had the distinct pleasure of being at the Presentation art centre on Friday 21st Feb for the official opening of inspired – a new exhibition of art by dutch artist Marja van Kampen. the opening was performed by the First lady herself Mrs. Sabina higgins who is a long time friend of both Marja and her galwegian husband dick donohoe and was lavish in her praise of them as both friends and marvellous patrons of the a r t s . g a l w a y ’s l o s s i s wexford’s gain she said as she went on to speak about Marja and her paintings which are an explosion of vibrant colour and life bordering on the surreal. Mrs Higgins was also full of compliments for the Centre and for the wonderful work of Manager Mairead Linneen. She described it as a wonderful space and said that we were extremely fortunate to have it at our disposal in
Enniscorthy and she commended the Town Council for providing such a great centre for the arts. Marja van Kampen who prefers to let her paintings do the talking is a charming, smiling, unassuming, gifted artist and her work is electric, exciting, stimulating and at the same time relaxing with a huge emphasis on the beauty and abundance of nature. The Inspire Collection was inspired by Marja’s visits to India where she fell in love with and became fascinated by “the strong colours, the abundant and varied vegetation, the vibrant outdoor life, the bright colourful clothes, and in particular the tactile relationship of the women and children”. Marja’s disregard for perspective and distortion of proportions creates a story book element to her paintings which could be illustrations from Alice In Wonderland. These paint-

Poetry at Cafe Fusion Poetry at cafe Fusion returns on Friday 7th March at 7.30pm at the very popular cafe on north Main Street in wexford. the March gathering will be an open mic night with poets and readers free to choose whatever poems they like. readers and listeners are invited for 7.30pm when they can order their drinks, buns and cakes while mingling with fellow enthusiasts, the reading starts at 8.00pm under the watchful eye of Mc denis collins. Although the poetry on the night will be completely at the discretion of the readers people often ask for a few pointers for suitable material. Well you could think of the time of the year with daffodils popping up everywhere and trees starting to come into bud. It is a time for refreshing, doing some Spring cleaning, dusting the cobwebs out so its likely that newly written poems will feature. One of the regular readers had prepared some love poems for the last reading but could not make it along so one can expect to hear them this time around. It is the beginning of March so maybe some mad March hares or maybe an army on the march will turn up. We have had such disturbed weather this winter past that maybe there will be poems of storms and rain and wind or maybe people will be looking forward to better times when the sun will return to shine brightly in the sky. Drama festivals are in progress throughout the county so maybe someone will turn up with a poem about a favourite play or playwright, maybe there will be some sonnets from Shakespeare.
