Putting the finishing touches on the set of Brooklyn in Castle Street, Enniscorthy, 31st March.

Filming of the movie ‘Brooklyn’ has commenced in Enniscorthy. The town is buzzing with actors (including Saoirse Ronan and Domhnall Gleeson), crew members (about 70 in total), and hundreds of local “extras”. The local hotels and B&Bs are booked up – great news for the local economy. The town itself is looking superb and Castle Street in particular has had an amazing transformation with some of the shopfronts getting a makeover to look like the 1950s.

The movie, based on the book of the same name by local author, Colm Toibin, tells the story of Eilis Lacey, a young girl growing up in the 1950s with no hope of finding work, and who emigrates to the United States to make a new life. We look forward to seeing Enniscorthy on the silver screen in the near future and hopefully the success of this venture will encourage other film companies to choose Enniscorthy as a location in the future. n

WHERE CAN I PICK UP THE SLANEY NEWS?

Welcome to the April issue of Slaney News. The filming of Brooklyn in Enniscorthy is the big story on most people’s lips and we are delighted to see it having an immediate beneficial effect on the town’s economy. However a bigger story is unfolding in the shape of the upcoming Rikon consultants’ report on the town’s future. It is the intention of Enniscorthy Tourism to launch this report, or at least the most immediate and salient points of it, as well as display and highlight the wealth of activities and attractions that we have to see and do in this superb town of ours, at an Expo being held in the Riverside Park Hotel on Tuesday 29th April between 6pm–8pm. Everyone is invited to attend. Hope to see you there. You can keep up to date with developments during the month on our Slaney News Facebook page and on the new Enjoy Enniscorthy Facebook page. And don’t forget you can read our recent back issues online at: www.issuu.com/slaneynews/docs. – Frank Corcoran

Enniscorthy Easter Egg Hunt Supporting over 1,000 Enniscorthy jobs

Rafter St, court St, church St, Easter Egg hunt. Saturday 19th april, 12 noon to 3pm. For primary school children. Ten shops, at least, will participate in a massive Easter Egg hunt and a colouring competition in Enniscorthy this Easter. children can collect entry cards from their school in advance or from the Easter Bunny in the town centre on the day itself – 19th april. Each shop will be represented on the Easter Egg Hunt card. The child goes in to each store on 19th April where a nominated employee in fancy dress will stamp/sign the card and give the child a small egg-themed gift. When the child has visited all the shops on the card, and has it stamped in each, they can return the card to the Easter Bunny who will enter them in a draw which will take place that evening for a prize of a jumbo Easter Egg. The bunny will also gladly accept all colouring competition entries which will have a separate great prize. A local children’s charity may also be involved selling their arts and crafts from a stall on the day and some shops will have stalls outside their premises. There will also be balloons, flags, bunting, etc, all adding to the Easter festive atmosphere. Watch out for posters and keep an eye on the Enjoy Enniscorthy and Slaney News Facebook pages for more details. See you on the 19th! n

The Enniscorthy Business Association’s novel entry in this year’s St Patrick’s Day Parade. Over the last 12 months the Enniscorthy Business Association (EBA) has been exceptionally active in organising a huge range of events and promotions to boost retail and service activity in the town. There have been promotions for Christmas, Halloween, Valentine’s Day, etc as well as working on the introduction of the Enniscorthy Gift Voucher scheme.

A novel activity in recent weeks was the inclusion of an EBA entry in the St Patrick’s Day Parade highlighting the fact that over 1,000 people are employed in local busnesses in Enniscorthy town and these jobs largely depend on local people doing business in Enniscorthy. The EBA is very grateful for the support local businesses receive from Enniscorthy residents and the EBA will continue to come

up with attractive promotions to acknowledge that loyalty. For Easter some members of the EBA have created an Easter Egg Hunt promotion based around the town centre. Watch out for posters and keep an eye on the Enjoy Enniscorthy and Slaney News Facebook pages for more details. To find out more about the EBA simply ring 087-2403310 or email: e.b.a.enniscorthy@gmail.com. n

Co Wexford Education Centre welcomes Stephen Graham Last month Australian Literacy guru, Stephen Graham, spent a day in the Co. Wexford Education Centre in Enniscorthy working with over 70 primary teachers. The centre would like to say a huge thanks to Fresh Today, the Enniscorthy based company which supplies school lunches to local primary schools, for their sponsorship without which the event could not have been held. n

I had met the man briefly prior to the event ascertaining that he was a Kilkenny man with

But nothing prepared me for his extraordinarily insightful and thoroughly wonderful presentation on mental health. As one listener on the night observed, `It was like watching a film – you just didn’t know what was coming next`. Dr. Heffernan spoke for two hours that felt like ten minutes and had his audience some-

His sharp wit coupled with his ability to laugh at himself and his inadequacies has tremendous appeal and endears him immediately to his listeners. They instantly indentify with him. Fergus Heffernan believes honesty is the key and if we are never honest with ourselves we will never be happy. The candid and open way he speaks about himself and his own family experience from his alcoholic father to his bipolar mother to his own attempted suicide is surprising, refreshing, emotive and totally engaging. Everyone in the auditorium felt that they could relate to this man who had just bared his soul and shared his darkest secrets with them. No-one was in a hurry to leave and as we gathered in Reception for a cuppa afterwards so many people were anxious to speak to Fergus about their own lives and their own experiences and thank him for what was truly an exceptional evening, and Fergus had time for all of us. On behalf of the Enniscorthy Forum I would like to express our thanks to this wonderfully sincere and charming man and to the County Chairperson Lucy Medlycott for organising the event for all the groups and organisations in the Enniscorthy area. Such was his appeal and attraction that I have no doubt we will be seeing more of Fergus over the coming year – so keep your eye on the County Wexford Community Forum website and Facebook page for details or watch this space! – Maria Nolan

St Mary’s CBS school Principal, John Ryan.

The Department of Education has allocated funding for a major extension at St Mary’s CBS in Enniscorthy. The extension will involve five general classrooms and two resource rooms. The school originally applied for the funding a few years ago and the good news came last

month that the application was successful. Commenting on the announcement from the Department, local Minister Paul Kehoe TD said: “This extension is vitally important for the increase in the size of the school to cope with growing population levels in the coming years. It is just reward for the school that has an excellent track record in producing good students. “It is the second large capital schools project for the town of Enniscorthy in the past twelve months following the sanctioning of the multi-million transformation to St Aidan’s NS. This is further evidence that the Government is committed to investing in education in County Wexford.” Work on the CBS project is likely to get underway this autumn and Mr John Ryan, School Principal, believes the new rooms will be open for the school year starting in September 2015. n

Gaelscoil Inis Córthaidh The Gaelscoil inis córthaidh coiste is organising a 5k fun run/1 mile walk on Sunday, april 6th, 2014 to raise funds for the school. Registration for the 5k run is from 9.30-10.30am on the 6th at Gaelscoil inis córthaidh, drumgoold, and costs €10. The run commences at 11.00am. The 1 mile walk will commence from the school at 11.15am. Sponsorship cards are available from the Gaelscoil office during school hours or alternatively, if you wish, a small donation could be given on the day. Paul O’Reilly, Event Controller, says, “The aim of the event is to provide a fun day out for both young and old, fit and not so fit and hopefully raise a few euros along the way. Much emphasis is on fitness these days so we set out to include a 1 mile route which is both safe and practicable for young children and those of us who would be less inclined to do a 5k run.” Donnacha Kerins, Chairperson of the Gaelscoil Coiste, says, “We have had various fundraising events in the past and this year opted for a fun run and walk which we hope will allow for a large community involvement. We would encourage all to come along for a very enjoyable morning of exercise and of course join us afterwards in our beautiful new school for refreshments, chat and prize giving.” Have a look at the chosen routes on Facebook and remember “Is fear an tsláinte ná an táinte!” Facebook: www.facebook.com/funrungaelscoil where you will find detailed maps of the two routes. Waterford Airport – Connecting the Southeast to Europe Birmingham

Manchester

Thanks to easy connections through Birmingham and Manchester, Waterford Airport  is increasingly being used by  passengers traveling onwards to other UK destinations and to  airports in continental Europe. European destinations now within easy reach of the southeast region through F l y b e ’s f l i g h t s f r o m Waterford include Paris, Milan and Dusseldorf. In Britain, Aberdeen, E d i n b u r g h , G l a s g o w, Inverness, Exeter, Newquay, Norwich and Southampton are among the locations with seamless connections on Flybe routes. Waterford has direct flights to/from Manchester and Birmingham four times each week as part of Flybe’s spring/summer schedule. The onwards travel options mean it’s now possible to avoid the congestion, lengthy queues, long waits and high parking charges at larger

Irish airports and still reach major UK and European cities within just hours. For example, passengers leaving Waterford at 11.50am on Tuesdays and Fridays can be in Paris Charles de Gaulle at 4.50pm, travelling via Manchester. On the return leg, passengers departing the French capital at 8.05am on Mondays, Wednesdays or Fridays can reach Waterford just four hours later at 12.05pm, flying through Birmingham. Similarly, those flying to Glasgow on Mondays, Wednesdays or Fridays can leave Waterford at 12.30pm and be in the popular Scottish city less than four hours later at 4.20pm, travelling via Birmingham.

Commenting on the range of onward travel options, Desmond O’Flynn, CEO of Waterford Airport said: “These connections on a single ticket allow passengers check-in their luggage at Waterford, make a straightforward and well-timed connection at Birmingham or Manchester and reach a wide range of destinations in Britain or continental Europe. “Our passengers tell us they value this option as they’re spared the 130-180 kilometre drive to one of the bigger and probably more stressful Irish airports. At Waterford Airport, they also value the comfort of driving right up to the terminal building to park their car, the ease of check-in and security screening, all of which offer a lot more time saving. On the return journeys, there’s the great feeling that when you

land in Waterford, you’re a short drive to your home in the southeast.” –––––––––––––––––––––––

Postcards from just four of the great cities you can now easily reach through www.flywaterford.com with www.flybe.com:

PARIS – frequently listed as the world’s most romantic city, the French capital has long been popular with Irish visitors and has a huge range of attractions from the Louvre and Sacre Coeur to the Eiffel Tower and Notre Dame Cathedral. Shopping on the Champs Elysees and cruising on the Seine are

other fun things to do in the City of Love. http://en.parisinfo.com/ MILAN – fashion capital of stylish Italy and a great touring base for Lombardy and the north of the country, Milan has rich history and appeals to soccer fans with fierce rivals AC Milan and Inter playing at the San Siro. Those who like architecture will be wowed by the Duomo cathedral in the city centre while no visit to Italy is complete without some great food and wine. www.visitamilano.it/turismo_en/ DuSSELDORF – on the banks of the Rhine, Dusseldorf has excellent train connections to much of Germany and Europe beyond but is also definitely well worth a visit in its own right. Attractions include a wonderful Altstadt (old city) with great bars and restaurants. For a more modern view of city life, don’t miss the world-class architecture in MedienHafen. If shop-

ping is your mission, you’ll want time on Königsallee. www.duesseldorf-tourismus.de/en/home/ EDINBuRGH – the Scottish capital is a dream to visit with so many attractions packed in to a compact city centre. Edinburgh Castle is an obvious must see as is the Royal Mile but be sure to also check out the Scottish Parliament as well as the National Museum of Scotland. The Palace of Holyrood House, commonly referred to as Holyrood Palace, is the official residence of the British monarch in Scotland. Located at the bottom of the Royal Mile in Edinburgh it is also worth a visit. The Royal Yacht Britannia and Edinburgh Zoo are also worth diverting for while, there are also great bars, restaurants and shops for you to visit. If you need a breather, Princes Street Gardens are perfectly located beneath the spectacular Castle Rock. www.edinburgh-inspiringcapital.com/

Tech Tip by Sam power

GeT iT Fixed enniScorThy

GooDbye winDows XP On April 8th 2014 Microsoft technical assistance for Windows XP will no longer be available, including automatic updates that help protect your PC or laptop. If you own a Windows XP computer then it is time to act and you really have only three options. The first is to upgrade your existing computer to Windows 7. This may also require upgrading your computer's hardware to meet the requirements for Windows 7. The second is to replace your computer for a new one running Windows 7/8. The last, although I can't recommend it, is to keep XP, stop using all built in Windows programs that connect to the internet and take the chance. This means swap Internet Explorer for Chrome/Firefox and swap Outlook Express/Outlook 2003 for Thunderbird. There will be no further security updates for Windows XP or fixes for any vulnerabilities found by hackers, so back-up your data now! Some believe that hackers already know of such vulnerabilities, and are just wait-

ing for XP support to stop so they can exploit them.

As ever if you have queries about this article or you’d like me to talk about a tech issue that interests or concerns you in a future article, then pop me an email at sam@getitfixed.ie or you can phone the shop on 053 9238544. n

Call into the store any time to discuss your options and we will help you get sorted. We have new and second hand computers in stock and may take your old computer as a trade in, or we can upgrade it to windows 7/8 for you.

Riverside Park Hotel expansion… If you’ve driven along the Promenade in Enniscorthy recently, you may have noticed some major construction going on at the Riverside Park Hotel & Leisure Club. There are two major projects coinciding, making it the hotel’s largest single investment since opening its doors in 1998. The first is the addition of 20 luxurious air conditioned guest bedrooms, the second being the addition of an additional Conference & Banqueting Suite being named after local man, Seamus Rafter. This additional Conference Room will cater for up to 200 people. These major projects along with the installation of a new elevator and recent extension to the Moorings Restaurant are being embarked upon as a result of the belief of its owner, Mr. Colm Neville, that an upturn in the economy is imminent and that the phenomenally successful team in

place in the hotel will be able to take advantage of this improvement when it occurs. The work will give the hotel 80 bedrooms in total and will provide much needed bedrooms to the Enniscorthy area for incoming visitors. The project will also encompass an extension to its kitchen currently serving the Alamo Restaurant with the function space in mind, under the watchful eye of executive chef Dave Anderson who, like Jim Maher, the hotel General Manager, has been with the hotel since it opened some 16 years ago. This €1.5m investment intended to create additional conference and banqueting business is much needed as the hotel’s successful wedding business tends to take up most of its weekend banqueting availability, “Currently we would have had to turn away many functions due to our

extremely well booked wedding business, whereas with the new facility of the Seamus Rafter Suite we will from July be able to cater for both as well as accommodate overnight delegates or function guests” states Jim Maher. Mr. Maher is keen however to stress the fact that future brides and grooms can remain reassured that the hotel will continue to cater for only one wedding on any one day, a factor that has no doubt contributed to The Riverside’s enviable position of being the premier location in the South East for weddings. The hotel has never shied away from investment and has undergone continual investment during its annual January closures, whether it be the refurbishment of the existing banqueting suite or the major transformation in January 2013 of the Alamo Steakhouse to the spectacular

penthouse suite development which is a requisite for their wedding market. “We will always continue to re-invest in our fantastic product on behalf of our valued customers, as they deserve nothing less to be honest” says Colm Neville, the hotel owner, who is very proud of both the property and the staff team that strives at all times to deliver a top quality service to their valued guests. The hotel has already begun to take bookings for the new Seamus Rafter Suite, and it is to host its first banquet in this suite in August 2014 making it a promising indication of things to come for this thriving hotel. The hotel can be contacted on 053 92 37800 for enquires regarding bookings for the new Seamus Rafter Suite for conferences, dinner dances, retirement parties or private gatherings. n

Basia Dunio celebrated not only her Irish Citizenship on 31 March, but her birthday also. Basia is pictured above with one of her sponsors, Paul Kehoe TD, at a surprise party in Stamps organised by friends with Eddie Crean and Richard King providing the music. With 9 centres throughout Ireland, Pieta House provides a prefessional, one to one therapeutic service for those who are experiencing suicidal ideation or engaging in self-harm. A doctor`s referral or a psychiatric report is not required and the service is completely free of charge. Pieta House’s vision is to have a centre within 100 kilometres of everyone in Ireland. Last year was the first year that the Darkness into Light Walk came to Wexford and with the help of the Rapparees/Starlights and Shamrocks GAA Clubs it was very successfully staged in Enniscorthy with the 5K route around the perimeter of the town. Over 900 people turned up to walk or run and over €25,000 was raised for suicide prevention. Shamrocks and Rapparees/Starlights are on board again this year and are hopeful that they can build on the success of 2013 increasing both numbers attending and money raised. Darkness into Light is an incredible and emotive experience and one that people embrace and remember for a long, long time. – Maria Nolan PRO

Forward Movement Forward Movement, a unique health clinic, has moved from Evolv Health Store on Castle Hill and re-opened at Kavanagh’s Pharmacy on Duffry Hill in Enniscorthy. The clinic offers a comprehensive natural health service for all members of the community, from newborns to elderly clients, dealing with a great range of issues from back pain, sports injuries, arthritis, IBS, chronic fatigue, colic, bedwetting, asthma, snoring, anxiety, confidence, decision-making and more. Forward Movement’s strength comes from deeply understanding how the body works – from genes and cells, to organ systems and the mind. “We aim to track the cause of a problem, and then work to actually resolve it,” says founder and practitioner Shalini Sinha. “Our clients leave feeling well, often in a surprisingly short period of time, and our changes are longlasting.” “Many people want healthcare that provides more attention, and ways out of their problems, rather than strategies that often can’t do more than maintain or manage a problem over time. The body is dynamic, and naturopathy offers real tools to allow recovery from even chronic illnesses.” Treatments involve four core services. We are reminded that while decking is low maintenance it is not maintenance free. We do well to get 2 years out of a decking area before repainting is required. To get a great finish a good clean, sound surface is required. The easiest way to do this is with a power washer and a good decking cleaner. If there is any moss, mould or algae this must also be cleared. If you do not have a power washer an appropriate moss cleaner and deck scrub will suffice. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions and then either power wash or hose the decking down. Do not forget to give a light cleaning & sanding to any spindles or hand rails. For a particularly neglected deck reapply the deck cleaner and leave the area to dry fully. Already, the deck should be looking a lot healthier. The decision now is – oil or stain. Both come in a variety of colours and brands. Clear deck oil is also available. As regards oil vs. stain our experience

You don’t need an expensive paint brush, just a brush that is wide and thick enough to allow the stain/oil to be applied liberally and quickly. A standard 9" roller tray is handy too. Spindles and hand rails may be painted with a standard 2" brush. And remember, not to paint yourself into a corner! If you are using oil do not be disappointed after the first coat. Your deck WILL require a second coat which can be applied approx 2 hours after the first. Once applied you should have achieved a terrific finish. On a good clear sunny day the deck should be dry and able to be walked on within 6-8 hours but no harm to leave overnight. Have a cold drink and enjoy the fruits of your labour. is that oils give a smoother, longer lasting finish. The main difference we find is the oil seeps into the decking while the stain forms a skin on the deck which is prone to chipping – particularly in coastal areas. Choose the colour that suits you and get ready for the easy part! Paint on a nice warm day. Ensure all furniture, planters etc are removed from the area. There are 3 main ways to apply the stain or oil: Traditional paint brush or stock brush. Can be hard on the back but ensures you are getting into every corner. Decking applicator pad. Glides along the deck and as it is rectangular gets right into corners. Very easy to use but I would recommend having a stick brush to hand as certain areas may require the oil/stain be worked into the ridges of the deck. Replacement pads are available. A clean soft sweeping brush. Easy to use and inexpensive. Again have a stock style brush for any tricky areas.

National Congress in Wexford “We want all people of Enniscorthy to Left: Organising Committee Yvonne Sidney, Leona Tector and Mary Nolan. Below: GAA and Politics – a great combination – at Ladies Football Congress: Diarmuid Devereux and Paul Kehoe.

On Saturday 8th March I had the pleasure of attending at the Ladies Gaelic Football Association’s annual Congress this year hosted by Wexford at the beautiful Ferrycarrig Hotel. The Congress has become rather more than national as delegates from Britain, North America, Canada, Europe and the New York County Board attended along with delegates from the 32 counties of Ireland. Over the weekend there were a total of 56 motions debated and voted on along with major discussion on the One Club Umbrella suggestion favoured by GAA President Liam O`Neill, who addressed the Congress on Sunday morning. Speaking to many of the lady delegates on Saturday night there were mixed views for the idea with the major concern among the women being that they might be in danger of losing their identity on the bigger playing field. Over 200 people attended the Congress Banquet among

them the President of the Camogie Association Aileen Lawlor, President of Rounders Joe Donohoe and President of Handball William Roche, Bishop Denis Brennan, Minister and Chief Whip Paul Kehoe, Lord Mayor of Wexford George Lawlor, Chairman of the GAA County Board Diarmuid Devereux, members of Wexford Supporters Club and former Chairpersons of Wexford Ladies Football. Chairman Peadar O`Connor welcomed everyone and paid special tribute to the organising Committee of Mary Nolan, Leona Tector and Yvonne Sidney for an excellent job and called on President Pat Quill to address the audience. Pat who is married to an

Co. Wexford to feature in world leading blog Visit Wexford Tourism is delighted to announce a creative tourism initiative for County Wexford in partnership with photography experts, Virtual Visit Tours – who operate one of the most visited Irish destination photo-blogs in the world. What makes this blog so popular is that their photos are interactive and capture a 360° field of view, immersing the online visitor in the picture. During 2014, Virtual Visit Tours are creating a massive tourism project ‘THE BIG 360 PROJECT’ photographing just six counties in Ireland and putting them firmly on the Irish destination map. County Wexford is the first of the chosen destinations and

Enniscorthy woman, Liz Redmond, said that he was delighted with the efficient way Congress was running and the professional hosting of the event by Wexford and thanked the Committee for the wonderful entertainment provided by Celtic Roots. Pat is in his last year as President and will be replaced in 2015 by Marie Hickey of Laois who will be the fourth woman to hold the position. Peadar O’Connor then made a presentation to President Pat Quill and Bishop Denis Brennan and a collection of €1380 was taken up to be donated to Cancer Research Daffodil Day at the end of March. – Maria Nolan

become ‘Fans’ and ‘Ambassadors’ for their very own town”

Enniscorthy Tourism, a subcommittee of Enniscorthy & District Chamber of Commerce, has been on a fruitful journey in recent years with the support of Enniscorthy Business Association and the local Town Council, assisting in the compiling of a much needed and valuable Strategic Tourism Report carried out by Rikon, research specialists, to develop a To u r i s m S t r a t e g y f o r Enniscorthy and the surrounding areas. The Committee has a vast range of items identified in the Action Plan flowing from

Rikon’s report and while they do hope to share a sense of their purpose and direction for the benefit for all, they will be trying to avoid overloading the general public and their fellow traders with detail. Perhaps the most important aim and purpose for the Expo evening will be to highlight to all those people in Enniscorthy and the surrounding areas, in particular the traders and those meeting visitors on the street, all that is great and good about our town and to highlight the vast array of tourist (and retail) attractions we have to offer. The Rikon report highlights what Enniscorthy Tourism has known for some time, that there is a greater need to crosssell, to support each other and in order to be able to deliver a more informed service to those either thinking of coming to our town or already visiting, we all need to educate ourselves much more about the treasures that may exist right on our own doorstep.

To this end Enniscorthy Tourism is currently inviting up to 20 tourism providers to exhibit, whether they be activities, attractions, retail or accommodation providers. This is a great opportunity for them to exhibit to their neighbors and raise awareness of what they are all about and to highlight the great experiences they offer their customers. This Expo invites all businesses, and everyone in retail, offices, cafés, bars, postmen, bin collectors, traffic wardens, or simply people who may meet with any member of the visiting general public, to come along and see what there is to do and see, right here on their own doorstep! The evening will be a very positive one, promoting a theme of more exposure and selfhelp, hopefully sending people away in an uplifted and optimistic mood to better welcome our visitors and to embrace what we all hope will be a great tourism and retail season for our town. n

the project will be carried out across the county during April. The team of professional 360° photographers will be in Wexford, photographing and blogging about the local tourism providers. Visit Wexford is delighted to be working with the Virtual Visit team and are encouraging those in the tourism industry to be part of this very exciting tourism campaign. Virtual Visit anticipates over 100,000 views and significant visitor engagement from this combined approach during the month of the campaign. It is a great marketing opportunity for Wexford. high hopes for highbury Amanda Byrne is Highbury Design – she created it, she lives and breathes it and apart from her family it is her life. It`s an all consuming passion for her and a labour of love which is evident from the way she talks about her new and ever developing millinery business. Amanda, originally from Dublin, was working in a bank up until the time she gave birth to her son and took the decision to focus on being a mother and setting up her own business. After taking a felt hat workshop Amanda knew instantly that she wanted to become a milliner and although almost completely self taught her designs and her work have b e c o m e re c o g n i s e d a n d

respected throughout County Wexford and beyond. I asked her where the name came from as her elegant cloche style hats and Highbury, for me, have a distinct Downton Abbey resonance. “I chose the name ‘Highbury Designs’ because it is the name of our house, we built our house, we got married in our house and are raising our son here, I want my business to be part of all of that. I recently altered my brand to ‘Highbury by Amanda Byrne’ as I felt as an artist I should be acknowledging the fact that it is me designing, also it makes it a little bit more personal.” Amanda began with a studio in the Craft Courtyard at Wells House where I first came across her but has since moved her business to her home which she says allows her to focus more on her work. Recently, I came across Amanda as one of the Wexford exhibitors at Showcase Ireland 2014 in the RDS where her designs were enjoying popularity and acclaim in the trade. Amanda is constantly improving and expanding and is hoping to branch into men’s hats

over the coming year. She has developed her own unique millinery style, drawing her inspiration from the 1920’s era, although she does like to put a modern twist to it – “I love the simplicity of the cloche and the numerous ways it can be finished but still represent a strong woman with an air of sophistication,” Amanda says. Amanda’s designs have been featured in Horse & Countryside magazine and one of her designs ‘The Pink Cloche’ bagged first prize in an international millinery competition organised annually by The Mad Hatters Society. Amanda is creative and hard working, “I create hats that can be worn again and again, but still make you feel as if you’re donning a new hat. Women wear my hats to all sorts of events, or even just strolling around town.” Amanda’s tips for women buying hats/headpieces for weddings/races/etc., are: Be comfortable in what you are wearing, be it a little flower headpiece or a full bunch of flowers fashioned into a headpiece. Always think of the weather,

a feather lightly blowing in the wind can look amazing but on a cold, wet day a feather will look awful. Remember a hat should stand out but should also be blended to your whole outfit. Be practical, price is a huge factor now, so will you get more than one wear out of it, can it be slightly altered to look different with another outfit etc. Every woman should wear a hat. Amanda likes nothing better than to impart her love of hat making and her creativity and knowledge to others so she is now offering millinery and feltmaking workshops in comfortable and friendly surroundings at her home. Providing all the tools required, all the materials needed along with lunch and light refreshments throughout the day. As part of the workshop you will design, create and finish your headpiece and take it home with you at the end of day. Depending on the type of design you wish to create you can choose from 1, 2 and 3 day workshops at varying prices. Full details are available on the Highbury website at www.highburydesigns.com.

Ladies, what a lovely occasion this would be if you were looking for something different for a wedding, special occasion or the races or even just for an alternative ladies outing. Definitely worth researching girls as you will enjoy Amanda’s friendly smile and her gentle ways and you will be enveloped by her passion and her ardour. Amanda’s plans for the future include having her hats The Easter Bonnet.... going on the tradition of Easter Bonnets, Amanda took a straw hat, stripped it of its old trimmings and trimmed it with fresh, new, bright colour flowers and ribbon and named it 'Cherry Blossom' as it was her own Cherry Blossom tree in her garden that inspired her.

for sale in a number of outlets throughout Ireland. She is at present in discussions with potential buyers and is looking forward to displaying her wares at Showcase Ireland 2015. Violin virtuosos to perform in Wexford The sensational Vladimir and Anton Jablokov will perform in St Iberius Church in Wexford on Saturday 5th April at 8pm joined by an ensemble of world class musicians. The better known of the brothers is Vladimir Jablokov who started playing the violin aged five, making his stage debut at the tender age of ten. Coming from four generations of professional music makers, with a Russian maestro for a father and five musical siblings around him at home; Vladimir is steeped in the classical tradition. Vladimir arrived in Ireland in 2004 as part of the Eastern European diaspora welcomed at the height of the Celtic Tiger years and was soon busking on Dublin’s Grafton Street. Getting a taste for live performance, he formed the Slovak Festival Quartet in 2006 with some friends.

With a burgeoning reputation since then, Vladimir has played some of Ireland’s most prestigous venues including The Mansion House, The Gaeity Theatre, Marlay Park, Cork Opera House, Limerick UCH and, at the behest of President McAleese, Aras an Uachtarain. He has headlined his own sold out concerts at the National Concert Hall in Dublin and has appeared on the Late Late Show, Nationwide (RTE1) and has been a guest on various radio shows – Ian Dempsey, John Murray and Pat Kenny. In St Iberius expect to hear music from Johannes Brahms, J. S. Bach, Antonio Vivaldi, Johann Strauss and themes f ro m T h e G o d f a t h e r, D r. Zhivago, Fiddler on the Roof as well as many singalong favorites. Tickets are €20 and available from Wexford Arts Centre (053-9123764) and Whites for Music (053-9122067).

Wexford Food and Wine Festival 2014 casts off! The countdown is on for the very best food festival in the south east. Between 23rd May and 25th May, Wexford Food and Wine Festival will have some 50 events celebrating the county’s superb and thriving food scene. There are lots of fantastic events planned featuring plenty of fresh local food – plus some mouthwatering demonstrations and workshops. Packed with activities, entertainment and stalls, there are also lots of great family activities. The main food exhibitions in Selskar and South Main Street are free and include many local producers including those from The Wexford Food Family, The Welsh Producers and many other artisan producers. A favourite with many people is the craft beer and tapas tent run by Cistin Eile and The Sky and The Ground. Don’t miss the ‘Molly Malone Evening’, a seafood Masterclass at Greenacres Gallery on the Friday evening. Also back as a result of popular demand are foraging trips at The Haven, where chefs and enthusiasts will be foraging for food. On hand will be Blackstairs Ecotrails who can show them how to transform their haul into inspirational dishes and where children can enjoy a woodland exploring session.

New for 2014 will be a talk with cook, author of Wild Food and judge of ‘The Great Irish Bake-Off’ TV show, Biddy White Lennon. Again this event is free and all are welcome. The fantastic “FESTIVAL HOG ROAST & BBQ” will take place this year at Wexford Harbour Boat & Tennis Club on the Saturday evening and details of the annual ‘Can’t Cook, Won’t Cook’ are expected to be announced the first week in April. A ‘Square Meals’ art exhibition will be taking place in the Pigyard Gallery and Wexford Arts Centre will be hosting a ‘Discovery Clubs Art & Science Lab: I love dirt!’ It’s a get down and dirty time for kids as they

discover the surprising science of soil! The Wexford Food and Wine Festival is organised by a voluntary committee of local people on a non profit making basis. They endeavour to have as many of the events free of charge as possible but some events do have a small cover charge purely to cover costs. Any profits generated are donated to charities and worthy local causes. For more information on all the events in Wexford Food and Wine Festival, go online at www.wexfordfoodfestival.ie or follow them on Twitter to stay updated on all the latest news, offers and exciting announcements @WexfordFoodFest. ■

In this new series, Maria Nolan looks at what’s new and exciting on the Enniscorthy fashion scene and beyond.

Slaney Catwalk Focus on Mary-Elizabeth’s Mary Elizabeth Hughes is a young, energetic, enthusiastic Enniscorthy entrepreneur with an easy smile, a pleasant countenance, a bubbly disposition and a very practical approach and her premises, Mary-Elizabeth’s at Castle Street, compliments and illustrates her personality being bright, cheerful and full of colour. Her clothes cater for sizes 8 to 28 and for all shapes and indeed I would say all likes – she carries a wide variety of styles and brands including Purple Rose, Deca, One N One, Evanna, and the beautiful French brands La Viola and Donna Sophia along with the very versatile Zhenzi with its good quality jeans and jeggins. Mary Elizabeth believes that most women have a warped image of themselves and what will suit them, “They come in with very fixed ideas in the heads and are adamant that some styles don’t look good on them. I use gentle persuasion to get them into outfits that they don’t generally go

Proprietor, Mary Elizabeth Hughes

for and they are astounded with the results”. While I was interviewing Mary Elizabeth I witnessed some of that gentle persuasion and I have to say it worked a treat. The customer

was quite certain that a particular style wouldn’t do anything for her being the age she was and she definitely couldn’t wear all those colours being the size she was – did Mary Elizabeth not have anything in plain black? Well the lady left the shop feeling really good about herself with an amazingly colourful outfit in an on trend style that literally took years off her. A happy camper and a job well done Mary Elizabeth! I am always looking for tips on what to buy and Mary Elizabeth firmly believes in the basics – a good black trousers and a good quality white trousers for summer and/ or white skinny jeans and/or white 3/4 lengths and then liven them up with splashes of colour in tops, cardigans and jackets. Mary Elizabeth just loves bright and bold and her shop is a kaleidoscope of colour – a bit like an Aladdin’s Cave bedecked with hats, bags, jewellery, shoes and scarves – you can put your

Mary-Elizabeth’s, 11 Castle Street, Enniscorthy

whole outfit together here and the friendly proprietor has a keen eye and will be only too glad to assist you to complete your ensemble. And yet again while I was on the premises I witnessed a lady purchase her entire Confirmation Day attire and leave delighted with herself – another job well done. Her innate fashion sense Mary Elizabeth attributes to her stylish mother who has her own clothes outlet in Bunclody and her amazing attention to detail she attributes to her early training as

A Fashion Feast Creative fashion was very much to the fore at the Island Pony Club Fundraising Fashion Show at the Riverside Park Hotel on Thursday 27th March as students of Colaiste Bride and Meanscoil wowed the audience with their inventive Junk Kouture along with stunning outfits and models from Helen’s Home Shop, Vintage Belle, Cloze & Shooz and fabulous fascinators, hats and headpieces from local Milliner Alice J Kelly. I would defy anyone to say that there is nothing in the line of fashion in Enniscorthy having seen the beautiful creations on the catwalk – from the very elegant designs from bygone eras by Vintage Belle at extremely reasonable prices to the very trendy

and versatile collections from Helen D’eathe’s Home Shop to the stunningly beautiful on trend fashion of Cloze & Shooz – there was something to suit everyone. Junk Kouture and Alice J Kelly’s unique and charming pieces added that extra dimension of high fashion and drama to the occasion not to mention of course Mr. Haute Couture himself – MC Extraordinaire – Mr. Liam Sharkey. Well done to Helen D’eathe and the rest of the organisers on a most enjoyable evening out, and Enniscorthy shoppers before you rush off to Gorey or Wexford or even Dundrum stop and have a look at what’s on offer in your own town first. – Maria Nolan

a hairdresser with Peter Mark. This dynamic lady believes that the secret of looking good is all about dressing to suit you – your shape, your size and your personality and she says, “Don’t be afraid to stand out”. She has a Clothes Technician on the premises every Friday all day who will make whatever alterations are necessary to have you looking your very best leaving the premises. I totally enjoyed my morning fashion shoot with Mary Elizabeth and her lovely model Helen Canning at her cheerful outlet

which is playing its part in the filming of Colm Toibin’s Brooklyn and I would endorse what she is doing for fashion in the town and compliment her for providing the larger lady with a well stocked and varied place to shop with bright, beautiful and colourful options. As she says herself ‘Bright, bold colours will always get you noticed and like a smile they will make you feel good about yourself and will cheer those you meet’. How nice is that! – Maria Nolan

The two year contract, with an option of a further 12 months extension, will allow Datapac to grow its business and create 15 new jobs. Established in 1982, Datapac provides an extensive range of technology solutions and services from its offices in Enniscorthy, Dublin and Belfast, to private and public sector organisations throughout Ireland. This new contract follows a strong start to 2014 for Datapac, enabling it to make a strategic decision to grow its business. The new jobs will be based across all of Datapac's locations and 10 of the roles will be created this year, with the additional 5 positions being created over the following two years. The new positions will include sales, marketing and logistics roles. The Office of Government Procurement (OGP) is part of the Department of Public Expenditure & Reform. It has been tasked with centralising public sector procurement arrangements for common goods and services. Speaking at the awarding of the contract Brian Hayes T.D., Minister of State at the Department

of Public Expenditure and Reform with special responsibility for the Office of Government Procurement (OGP), said, "The award of this contract to Datapac, a wholly Irish owned SME, is a perfect example of an Irish SME successfully competing for government business. We want to see more SMEs competing for larger State contracts - both at home and abroad. SMEs success at this level is key to securing a sustainable and durable recovery for Ireland." Patrick Kickham, director, Datapac, said, "Procurement is

an essential part of the Government's public service reform agenda and we are delighted to play our part in helping them to achieve sustainable cost savings and improved operational efficiency. This contract allows us to grow Datapac further, adding up to fifteen new people to the team over the next two years, and making further investments in our business and technology portfolio." Clara Quigley, sales manager, Datapac, said, "We have invested significant time, energy and capital to enhance our serv-

ice delivery capabilities in Datapac, including an online ordering system which is second-to-none in Ireland. We look forward to being able to extend our product lines and services further with this new contract from the OGP. It is a fantastic endorsement of the technologies, structures and people we have here in Datapac." In addition to employing a team of 170 highly-skilled people, Datapac also provides further support for the Irish economy by working closely with a wide range of suppliers and contractors throughout Ireland. ■

Wexford company poised for further growth Scurri was founded in 2010 by CEO Rory O’Connor in Duncannon, South Co. Wexford and now has a sales HQ in Central London. Scurri is a powerful ecommerce delivery platform which now controls the delivery of millions of parcels for businesses across the UK each year and current partners and customers include: JD Williams and Powa. Hotly tipped as one to watch by the likes of the Wall Street Journal the business has already won multiple awards for its innovative approach to delivery management, including “The One to Watch” from the Irish Internet Association. The business recently raised €1.2M in seed funding and appointed a number of highprofile board members in the process. Rory O’Connor, Scurri’s CEO and Founder, commented: “Delivery remains a huge priority for both customers and merchants, ecommerce is accelerating and customers now

expect Amazon-level service as standard. Our technology gives growing online merchants the power to fulfil this need quickly and affordably. As one of the first purpose built cloud-based solutions in Europe Scurri has found a better way to serve the market, reducing the cost and resource draining complexity of current shipping solutions. We are delighted to have secured both the financial investment and the expertise of Episode 1, ACT and Haatch as we look to assist more growing online merchants in the UK.” With a cloud-based platform that easily integrates parcel carriers with ecommerce merchants’ technical stack, Scurri’s universal solution is far more aligned with the fastpaced retail sector than its competitors. The simple software solution optimises the customer delivery experience, allowing merchants to effectively deliver on brand promises and drive customer loyalty. ■

Enniscorthy Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals news… peT approVed

VET DIARY FOR APRIL

with the Moyne Veterinary Clinic In each Slaney News the Moyne Veterinary Clinic deals with various issues relating to animals. This month, Joe Kavanagh takes a look at our pets growing older. As we grow older we tend to step down a gear or two, to a more steady, less frantic pace. We tend to become more studied in our movements and in our actions and “look before we leap” type of mentality. Is this because we've taken a few hits over time or is it learning from our mistakes. It's a little the same with the animals. As a puppy or kitten there's this unbridled bounce in them, tearing up all unsuspecting slippers or curtains in their wake! We long for the day that this over-exuberance will quell and quietness prevails. This ‘ball of energy’ phase usually subsides by the time they are one or two, depending on the breed. Now new challenges emerge like being attracted to the opposite sex and the wanderlust that comes with it! As they mature there is a gradual step down in the energy levels to a more sedentary, sedate contentment. So I ask myself is this the natural progression or is this a product of our lifestyle? To lessen the effects of time, reducing the build up of toxins in the body, keeping them nimble and supple, all will stem from a lifestyle of good food, exercise and a happy environment. If you're happy in your skin it shows in everything you do. It's a bit of the same for our furry friends so creating the optimal environment of wholesome nutrition, plenty of walks and runs and a big dollop of love to cap it off is the key to a long and fulfilled life for them… and us too! Enjoying each day that comes makes it easier to face the next one.

The society once again urges dog owners to take action and ensure their dogs are secured and cannot roam. Sheep and lambs are very vulnerable at this time of year and there have already

been a number of attacks around the county. Suspected cruelty and neglect can be reported without giving your name or details so please do not hesitate, you could save a life!

Act now if you suspect an animal is in danger. Phone 1890 515 515 or contact 053 9143919. You can make a difference by making a donation of money, food, equipment or your time! ■

Lent is considered a religious event but in actual fact is more to do with the lunar cycles. It is an excellent time for the body to detox so if you or your four legged friend are a little sluggish, now is the best time of the year to help correct this. To set you on the right road, to give your liver and gut the tonic they need, and getting the engine room in order makes for a humming motor all round. Is your pet firing on all cylinders? A local contributor looks at life today in Enniscorthy and beyond local and euroPean electIons Yes folks, they are at the starting line. The candidates for both the Local and European elections are making themselves known to the public at large and presenting us with their manifestos and policies which they hope will get them elected. However as a veteran voter I have learned many years ago to take all this with a pinch of salt. The last general election proved to all of us that we genuinely can’t believe a word of what either a party or a candidate tells you on the doorstep or puts in their election literature. Bertie Ahern summed it up during a debate on ethos which was taking place in the Dáil. Bertie said that “the only ethos in here is to get in and stay in” and he was right. One can’t help feeling that candidates for the Labour Party in particular will get a rough time on the canvas as a result of their complete about turn in relation to what they promised before the last general election and subsequently didn’t deliver after the election. We all remember the Tesco style advertisements entitled “Every Little Hurts”. In those advertisements they predicted that if Fine Gael got into power they would increase car tax, introduce water charges, cut child benefit, increase dirt tax, increase vat etc etc.. In other words put Labour into government and prevent these things happening. Well we did that. Labour went into government and guess what? All

of the things which they warned us about happened, introduced by Fine Gael and yes Labour. That’s why we are so skeptical of political promises and we should be. It’s going to be difficult to decide as to who we should vote for when we consider the impositions such as the above mentioned taxes plus the dreaded property tax our political leaders have imposed upon us over the last few years. Bear in mind that the property tax was a Fianna Fail idea implemented by Fine Gael and Labour as was the scandalous universal social charge which has destroyed our incomes and any amount of explaining by any of those parties candidates will not change that. Political parties judge their support on the basis of the number of candidates they get elected to local councils and Europe. They interpret support for their policies on that basis despite the fact that people voting in local elections, in particular, tend to vote for the candidate living nearest or on the basis that they come from a decent family or some other such notion. So it is very important to remember before you cast your vote that a vote for any of the parties, whether you intend it or not, will be taken by those parties as your support for their policies and that you are prepared to take more of the same. If you really believe that the present and previous government had no other choice but to introduce and fully implement their policies of austerity well then fair enough you

View from the Hill know what you must do, support their candidates. If you think that we the public have suffered enough you must reflect that in your vote. The most important thing is that we must vote for whatever candidate we believe is the most genuine and most likely to deliver on their commitments. As I stated in my last column it takes a tremendous amount of courage to put your name on a ballot paper and it is gratifying to see so many people taking that step. All candidates are entitled to courtesy on the door. By all means have robust debate not holding back your views because if the candidates continue to get the message that we, the public, have had enough austerity the message may get through to Leinster House and have effect.

The most important thing for all of us is to compare what the candidates are saying with what they or their parties are actually doing. With new candidates of the non party variety all we can do is use our judgment and hope that we make the correct decision. To all the candidates I say “Good luck, thanks for putting your name forward and hopefully you will get good weather and not too many vicious canines on the canvas.” IdIot of the Month Recently I went out for a few pints and not being as young as I once was, with the capacity which I once had, was forced to retire to the toilet after my first pint. When in there and washing my hands a young man was doing likewise beside me. He

said, “How’s your mother”. I looked sideways at him quizzically because anyone looking at me would know immediately that unless she was a double centenarian my mother would have to be long dead. I responded, “Oh my mother passed away many years ago” to which he responded “Aw that’s great I’ll be up to see her shortly”. What sort of fool is this I thought, better get out of here fast. As I turned to leave I noticed that he was still talking and only then spotted one of those new fangled earpieces for a mobile phone hanging out of his ear. Yep, Idiot of the Month applies. garda WhIstlebloWers As this column goes to press the controversy on the issue of Garda Whistleblowers rages on. It would certainly appear from what we read that the two gardai who raised matters of concern were treated very badly by their superiors and were left with little choice but report their views on the penalty points system and other matters to members of the Oireachtas. The Government response was totally unsatisfactory until Leo Varadkar, Minister for Transport, publicly stated his support for the whistleblowers. Immediately after Varadkar’s intervention Joan Burton, Eamon Gilmore and Ruari Quinn jumped on the bandwagon like knights in shining armour and came charging in to support the whistleblowers. One has to wonder where were these brave knights for the 12

months prior to this when our own Mick Wallace and his Independent colleague Clare Daly continuously raised this issue in the Dail. Shining their armour perhaps or more likely peering nervously over the parapet to which way the battle was going. It’s worth mentioning that the press can claim no glory out of this either, as at one point a press conference called by Wallace and Daly to discuss this scandal didn’t attract one journalist. ProtectIng the WhIstlebloWers The above gives rise to the question of who will protect the whistleblowers in question. We need someone with the moral compass of the late President Patrick Hillery. Those of us long enough in the tooth will remember an infamous night back in the eighties when amidst the chaos of a government falling certain high profile politicians inappropriately tried to access the President. A young army captain put his duty before his career and refused such access despite tremendous pressure from very powerful people. When the crisis was at its height the President, using his powers as Commander in Chief of the armed forces, made an order directing that the captain’s future career be not adversely affected by his correct actions on the night. People like Hillery could clearly see right from wrong and had the courage to act. Sadly we lack that today. n

Giants of their time… In radiant Kildare sunshine two giants from the wexford equine world were honoured for their outstanding achievements in their field and for their huge contribution financially and culturally to their county and their country. Chairman of Wexford County Council Ted Howlin bestowed the honour of Wexford Ambassador on racing legends Jim Bolger and Aidan O`Brien at the Curragh Racecouse on Sunday 23rd March. The ceremony, which took place where else but in the Winners Enclosure, was preceded by a Reception hosted by Wexford County Council in the Horseshoe Restaurant and presided over by Councillor John Hegarty who began by welcoming all to the prestigious occasion. Wexford’s greatest asset he said was the quality of its people who have excelled at home and abroad in sport, literature, music, media and business. Wexford men and women have achieved significant success, disproportionately to the size of the county. Jim Bolger and Aidan O’Brien are Wexfordians who are professional, hugely successful, globally respected and yet very much associated with their home county and as such were the ideal representatives for the county and what it has to offer and deserved to be added to the already distinguished list of Wexford Ambassadors

which includes Colm Toibin, Anne Doyle, Eoin Colfer, Michael Londra and Billy Walsh. These men he said are Wexford legends, Irish legends and global legends and they talk up Wexford wherever they go and we are so lucky to have their like promoting our county. Watched by members of Wexford County Council, members of Wexford GAA, people from the Wexford business community, along with many from the world of racing and the British and Belgium Ambassadors to Ireland, Ted Howlin then presented both men with symbolic pieces of crystal and their titles – reminding all that in future they would have to be addressed as ‘Your Excellency’. – Maria Nolan Jim Bolger and Aidan O’Brien. Up to 5th June entry fees are: half marathon €25; 5 mile race €15; 15K walk €15. The event attracts everyone from the country’s top athletes to the club and fun runners. (yes it is back after an absence of 3 years!), finisher’s medal and tea/coffee and sandwiches at the Riverside Park Hotel. The races start and finish on the banks of the River Slaney in Enniscorthy. The half marathon runs along the river, through the town and past the castle before heading out on tree lined roads through the pastoral County Wexford countryside in all its summer glory. The 5 mile race and 15K walk follow shortened versions of the same course. There are four water stations on the half marathon route, three on the 15K Walk and one on the 5 Mile route. All water stations supply 250ml bottles. The event is renowned for its festive and friendly atmosphere with music and race commentary and a start /finish area which is second to none. n

Mercedes-Benz GLA

motoring newS round-up Mercedes-Benz is famous for big, luxury saloons. But in recent years, just like many other luxury car brands, they have started to make smaller and trendier looking cars like the new A-Class hatchback and ClA coupe to attract new, younger buyers to the brand.

The latest is the new GLA and it is the first ever compact SUV from Mercedes-Benz. It’s just gone on sale here with prices starting at €35,800. The revamped Mini has been a huge success for BMW since its launch in 2001 and the latest version has just

gone on sale priced from €20,500. It’s bigger than the outgoing model and there are more efficient engines on offer. There is more space inside and the quality of the cabin has improved. And by all accounts it’s still a hoot to drive.

I’ve recently been driving another modern imitation of a classic – the Fiat 500. The Fiat 500 was first produced in 1957 but was relaunched in 2007. This car has a lot of charm and I’ve reviewed it this month. n

Fiat 500S review by Caroline Kidd The Fiat 500S is a sporty version of Fiat’s popular small car. It’s aimed at people who want the affordability and low running costs of the Fiat 500 but in a more eye-catching and dynamic package. The sporty element is purely cosmetic and the Fiat 500S loses some of the girly edge that might put some buyers off this tiny car. Distinguishing it from the rest of the 500 range are re s t y l e d f ro n t a n d re a r bumpers, new side skirts, a boot lid-mounted rear spoiler, a chrome exhaust and special 15-inch alloy wheels. There is the choice of two engines – a 1.2 litre 69bhp three cylinder petrol or a 0.9 litre Twin Air turbocharged two cylinder offering with 85bhp. The Fiat 500’s typically neat and well-presented cabin is retained inside this sporty special edition. There are not too many buttons and it is all very easy to navigate with Bluetooth connectivity meaning that it is bang up to date technology wise without having to navigate through a fiddly touchscreen. The radio and Bluetooth can be operated via steering wheel mounted controls. The 500S has good, supportive sports seats, a special steering wheel with red stitching, a new gear knob

Fiat 500S

and gaiter and a matte silver dashboard panel, all exclusive to this model. It’s surprisingly roomy up front and two adults can sit comfortably side by side, while in the back you will fit two adults, provided that they are not too tall. The boot is small but you will fit a small suitcase and overnight bag or a few shopping bags in there no problem and the rear seats can be let down if more space is needed. The 500S is a lot of fun to drive and it is absolutely brilliant around town. The tiny dimensions make it really easy to park, helped further by a button on the dash that

can be pressed to lighten the steering. The 1.2 litre engine in the test car was up to the job around town but you do notice the lack of power out on the open road. It’s not designed for motorway sprints and it bounces around a fair bit on the road at speed. Still there is loads of grip, the handling is good and there is a lovely feel to the gearbox. On the economy front, I got roughly 48mpg, but that included a few motorway runs. You can pick up a 1.2 litre Fiat 500S for €15,195 and air conditioning, Bluetooth, seven airbags, fuel-saving Start&Stop technology, elec-

tric windows/mirrors and remote central locking all come as standard. For a budget car, it’s a lot of fun to drive and it is very stylish. Many will buy it just for the cute, retro looks. After driving this car, I’m not surprised that the 500 has been such a great success for Fiat. Model tested: Fiat 500S Price: €15,195 Engine: 1.2-litre, three cyclinder petrol Power: 69bhp 0-100km/h: 12.9 seconds Economy: 58.9mpg (4.8l/100km) CO2 emissions: 113g/km Tax band: A4 (€200 per year) n

Thanks to everyone who helped out and came to the coffee morning in Joe Doyle’s lounge last month. A special word of thanks to Denise Gordon who kept the tea and coffee going, also thanks to Donal Cullen who wrote a special poem for Cystic Fibrosis called A Friend of Mine. Also thank you to my mother Ann Doyle for holding the day and

my father John for giving me the use of his premises. We raised €1,045 for the Co. Wexford branch. I am well pleased, it was up on last year’s total and the numbers were also up – that's a lot of coffee. Thank you on behalf of the Cystic Fibrosis Association of Ireland Wexford Branch. – Joseph Doyle, volunteer

Following the release of his debut album 'Where Colours Swim' in November, young singer David Burke has hit the road by bicycle! He’s playing 32

shows in 32 days in 32 counties! He recently played The Bailey in Enniscorthy as part of his unique tour – well done David. – Joseph Doyle

I rang Jimi on the dog and bone and he rang me back. I did a course in the VEC with Jimi Cullen and he is a very nice lad and one of the best singer-songwriters out there at the moment. And if you listen to Jimi Cullen you think you were in heaven. Unlike other singersongwriters Jimi doesn’t go on about a guy he met in a railway station in Clapham. He introduces his song and gets on with the job at hand. I saw him play a few years ago in Dbar and I tell you he hushed the crowd. No one said a word. Jimi is a chap from Gorey who loves his music. He’s Co. Wexford’s answer to Jimi Hendrix. Jimi Cullen is back on the road after nearly losing his hearing to a disease which affects your hearing and he was two years in the wilderness but now he’s back with a new album, new tour, and single and video. The new single is called BRAND NEW DAY. His new album is called Life. It’s out the 4th of April. The video is getting a lot of play up and down the country.

CoNgraTulaTIoNS…  Happy 60th birthday to Ann Nolan, Moran Park, on 12th April.  April Breen whose birthday is on April Fools Day.  Happy 21st birthday to Naoise Dunbar whose 21st birthday is in the rugby club soon. Naoise is better known on the rugby field with scorthy but he is swapping his rugby boots and shorts for a leather jacket and white tee shirt as he takes on the role of

a T-bird in EMS‘s production of Grease. Naoise is the son of well known stage actor Michael Dunbar and Annetta Wall so you’re a chip off the old block Naoise.  Also happy birthday to Mary Doyle, Darran Smyth, Katie and Samantha Crofts.  Congratulations on their new albums to Jimi Cullen and Dinny Davitt. – Joseph Doyle

In support of the new album Jimi will be doing a 50 date tour of Ireland. Jimi Cullen is a singer, songwriter, story teller and much more, a blender of folk, pop, rock and country, a poet of a thousand words, a performer of pure energy. Allow Jimi to take you on a journey from protest songs through love songs to those that squeeze every drop of emotion out of you. I’ll laugh and cry as he sings about everything from hangovers to homelessness always with a catchy hook and a positive message. He does not preach from his high horse. The new album and the single will both be available to download free for a limited time from the 4th April to the 24th August exclusively at jimicullenmusic.bandcamp.com and hard copies will also be available for free at all gigs on the tour. Next month on Music Box we’ll be featuring DINNY DAVITT. If you are in a band and would like to feature in Music Box, drop your details to doyleduffry@gmail.com. – Joseph Doyle

A motion was passed at last month’s meeting of wexford Borough Council which may lead to the conversion of the town’s old gaol into a museum. Sinn Féin Cllr Anthony Kelly tabled the motion calling on the Borough and County Councils to carry out a feasibility report on the project with a view to applying to the OPw and other appropriate bodies for grant aid. “Wexford's old County Gaol is the perfect location for a town museum,” Cllr Kelly said, “The building and grounds have played a historic role in the development of the town. First constructed in 1812, the building was taken over by the Free State and transformed into a military barracks in 1922. On the 13th of March 1923, republicans Jim Parle, John Creane and Pat Hogan were executed in what is now the town’s republican garden.”

“As we approach the decade-long period of commemoration which will no doubt be associated with the centenary of the rising, war of independence and civil war, it would be fitting for Wexford to have a museum which could educate people in a mature and non biased fashion about what really happened during this troubled period.” “As well as being a wonderful education asset, the museum would also be a tourist attraction and would create local employment. It would not have to be defined by its own history either. Our town and county have a rich heritage. It would seem fitting that our maritime history and artefacts pertaining to other periods should also be housed at the gaol.” “The recent funding allocation for Johnstown Castle is proof that the conversion of the Gaol into a museum is no

longer just a pipe dream. We can make this happen and I welcome what I hope will be a prompt and successful feasibility study so that we may move forward with a project that can only benefit Wexford town and the surrounding area.” n

Heart of the Matter

heart of the Matter is an exhibition of recent work by Five Towers Art group which opens on Thursday 3 Apr il at 2.30pm in The Presentation Centre with guest speaker Barrie Dowdall, documentary filmmaker. The exhibition is curated by Kathleen Delaney and runs until 12 April. It is open Tuesday - Saturday, 10am-5pm, admission is free and all are welcome. Heart of the Matter takes the heart as a symbol with its references and associations at the core of this exhibition. Ceramic hearts in luxurious lustres make reference to both the anatomy and decorative, embellished, stylised forms. The artists work from a studio at KTAC in Kilgooley. This is part of Wexford Co. Council's Arts Ability Programme in association with the HSE. Painting, ceramics, drawing, textile and mixed media work will form this exhibition. Artists' approaches differ in their personal con-

The brooklyn Audition wasn’t the only show in town last week as Enniscorthy Drama kicked off its summer season with auditions for the first of its summer plays – the hilarious British comedy Tom, Dick & harry. This extremely popular and funny work by playwright Ray Cooney is guaranteed to have the punters rolling in their seats and we look forward to staging it at the beautiful Presentation Centre this June. “Ray Cooney is the king of farce and this is one of his best plays, it’s actionpacked laugh out loud comedy at its best”. Tom, Dick and Harry is the hilarious story of three brothers. Tom and his wife are about to adopt a baby, while his brothers are anxious to help make a good impression on the woman from the agency who has arrived to interview the prospective parents. Unfortunately, Dick has stashed boxes of smuggled brandy and cigarettes in the house, and Harry, is in possession of a cadaver he has taken illegally from a medical school.

Tommy's paintings on paper and canvas feature the Titanic and are reminiscent of Alfred Wallis's work. The writing and doodles on Andy's work blend together where

the written word becomes part of the motif. The exhibition brings together different styles. There is however group work featured in a large textile piece inspired by Magritte's work as well as a sculptural mixed media piece. For further information E: kathdcuratorart@gmail.com.

Poetry at Wexford’s Cafe Fusion Poetry at Cafe Fusion returns on Friday 4th April at 7.30pm with a very special guest in the person of Jim Maguire. Jim was at the very first meeting to set up Poetry at Cafe Fusion and was instrumental in establishing it and helping to make it a success. Jim's collection "Music Field" was published in November 2014 by the Slazburg Poetry and focusses on the twin themes of music and musicians.

Every time Jim Maguire reads at Poetry at Cafe Fusion the listeners are always left wanting to hear more, so this month they will get that chance with Jim taking the second half of the evening to read a full body of his work. . The first half of the evening will be the regular Poetry at Cafe Fusion Open Mic session. While poets and readers are free to choose poems and themes of their own liking the organisers are suggesting that

they choose at least one piece on a musical theme. Each reader is invited to read two poems, either their own or favourite pieces by other poets. Poetry at Cafe Fusion begins at 7.30pm when readers and listeners can gather to chat and exchange news and views over coffee or tea and their favourite cakes provided by our host Gerrie North. At 8.00pm MC Denis Collins will call order and the readings will begin. n

Top this off with two illegal immigrants in the back of Dick’s van and hilarity ensues. Enniscorthy Drama Chairman Colum Coomey is in the Directors Chair and is busy at present putting his cast together. Our second summer play will be staged in August and will be directed by Drama Committee member and performer Jamie Murphy. To assist with expenses for these productions we have already held a very well

attended Movie Table Quiz at Rackards which proved to be both entertaining and lucrative and we plan to host an Easter Coffee Morning on Easter Saturday at The Presentation Centre with a prize for the best Easter Bonnet and of course the delicious traditional Easter favourite Hot Cross Buns will be served with the coffee. It’s the place to be this Easter – come along and help us entertain you this summer. – Maria Nolan, pro.

STORM FORCE by Mary Cotter When we saw the guttering in the garden, We knew it would be bad. The patio table Had taken off once before, We were used to that. So, we stayed indoors. The fire was on. We were cosy. We were warm. We had no water, no heat, no radio or tv. We couldn’t boil a kettle. We couldn’t charge our phones. We couldn’t use the internet To find how bad it was. Nationwide. It was bad house-wide. When the evening dark closed in We lit the candles. Mere decorations at the Christmastide, Now they came into their own. Lanterns bought by sons Were drafted in and gave good service.

Yankee candles fought for dominance With each other. Intervention was required. The Blueberry Muffin was confined to the kitchen On the mantelpiece Christmas Eve ruled supreme. So, we baked potatoes on the Sitting room stove. Rashers cooked in a small pan beside them. And still we were warm. Outside, the night lit up, Moonlight glowed Some stars came out to play. He read his Kindle And I had a torch To light the pages of my library book. ‘How to break habits’, It is called. It is all about the cue, The routine and the response.

Please send your poetry, prose, pics, reviews etc to: slaneynews@gmail.com

I am trying to figure out Why I always buy Yougurt, Nuts and Raisins When I am in Dunnes. Always. I have moved from chocolate And feel quite virtuous Scoffing the yogurt ones On my way home. The candles burned steadily, And got us through the night. But, oh, I am thinking of a real Christmas, Like the one just gone. When all the kids were home, And laughter filled the spaces A radio never could. Mind your Christmases, And keep them safe, And always have your candles At the ready.

Promises to keep

Promises were certainly kept at Bellefield gAA Complex on Friday 28th March as family, friends, political allies and opponents and work and Trade Union colleagues turned out in great numbers to launch a book of poems by the late Pat Cody called Promises to Keep dedicated to his wife Breda and daughter Aislinn, sponsored by SIPTU and in aid of Hospice Homecare. The National President of SIPTU Jack O’Connor said that this was an occasion that he just couldn’t miss as it was the first time ever he had been asked to launch a book of any description and secondly he was a great admirer, friend and colleague of the late Pat Cody. Mr. O’Connor spoke eloquently and warmly about a man whom he said was an intelligent, amusing, kind and caring individual who could get his point across and be staunch and firm in his convictions without alienating

or offending anyone – a rare trait and one to be valued, applauded and appreciated. A gentleman and a really nice person is the way Jack O’Connor described him saying that he always came away from Pat feeling better about himself. Pat had the ability to make people feel good – a marvellous quality in a person and one that endeared him to all. Chairman of Enniscorthy Town Council Johnny Mythen was lavish in his praise of his council colleague and said how extremely fitting it was that the

very first poem in the book is about Enniscorthy – Cathedral Town – because he said Pat Cody adopted Enniscorthy as his home but more than that Enniscorthy adopted him as a favourite son and many of the poems in the publication are about the ordinary well known people like Ger Collins, and the late Pat McGill. Pat also wrote warmly about his wife, his daughter, his father, his family and his two nephews Martin and William Doyle. A beautiful work Johnny Mythen said and a cherished memory of a wonderful man. Minister Brendan Howlin said that he had known Pat Cody for many years as a determined, hard working labour man and Trade Union activist and never knew that he had the time, inclination or the talent to write poetry and was completely astounded by the quality and passion of the work. He paid tribute to Pat’s family, especially wife Breda and daughter Aislinn saying that it was a lovely evening and a beautiful commemoration. MC for the evening, Pat’s brother Ger Cody, thanked all for coming with a special word for chief organiser Aine Doyle, Bellefield GAA for the venue and Minister Howlin and Jack O’Connor for taking time from their busy schedules to be there and SIPTU for their generous sponsorship – he said his brother would have been well pleased. Promises To Keep is €10 with all proceeds going to Hospice Homecare – a lovely read and a great cause – buy one! – Maria Nolan

The directors of Enniscorthy Athenaeum limited are delighted that the Athenaeum is centre stage for the Irish section of the filming of Colm Tóibín’s novel ‘Brooklyn’. Last month official word was received from Acting Fire Officer, John Maher, that the Fire Authority would temporarily revoke the Closures Notice for a period of one month under section 20A (10) of the Fire Services Act 1981 and 2003 for the purposes of Sunset Films Ltd filming of ‘Brooklyn’. The notice is being revoked on the basis of the fire safety measures and management procedure as out-

lined in fire safety reports submitted by independent fire consultants. This notification was received after lengthy talks with health and safety consultants, fire safety experts and insurers. The Athenaeum features in the novel which tells the story of Eilis Lacey, a young girl growing up in a 1950s provincial town, with little hope of finding employment, who emigrates to the States in hope of a brave new world. The movie will feature Saoirse Ronan, Domhnall Gleeson, Emory Cohen, Jim Broadbent and Julie Walters,

under Irish director, John Crowley. The Athenaeum directors are very pleased to be able to facilitate the filming of ‘Brooklyn’, and hope the venue will add a real touch of class authenticity to the production. The film will be a huge boost for Enniscorthy town, while hopefully adding impetus to Athenaeum fundraising activities. The Athenaeum can now add the title of film set to its points of interest and heritage along with it being HQ of the Irish Volunteers in 1916 and the meeting place of Hilton E d w a rd s a n d M i c h e á l MacLiammóir. n
