The 29th of April 2014 may turn out to be one of the key dates in the economic history of Enniscorthy. On that date the “Strategic Tourism Action Plan for Enniscorthy 2014-2016” was launched. As a town almost devoid of industry, tourism has the potential to be the town’s saviour. And to maximise tourism we need a coherent plan which, thankfully, we now have. At the official launch Colm Neville of the Riverside Park Hotel, and Chairman of

Enniscorthy Tourism, emphasised the benefits of all businesses in Enniscorthy “cross-selling” i.e. every business should use every opportunity to point out to their customers and visitors all that Enniscorthy has to offer so that those customers and visitors spend more time (and money) here which in turn benefits jobs and employment. It’s a “win, win” strategy. See page 8 for more on this crucial tourism plan for our town. n

WHERE CAN I PICK UP THE SLANEY NEWS?
Enniscorthy Tourism last night (29th April) launched in the Riverside Park Hotel the Rikon consultants’ report on Enniscorthy’s tourism (and economic) future. In addition the event highlighted the wealth of activities and attractions that we have to see and do in this great town of ours. Everyone was invited to attend and thankfully there was a great turnout for such an important occasion. If we can implement all the recommendations in the plan then there’s no doubt this town has a bright future. With the plethora of free newspapers now serving Wexford Town a lot of people have asked us are we going to follow suit and start up a Wexford Town edition of the Slaney News. Our answer is a simple ‘No’. While these new publications battle it out to serve Wexford Town we’ll continue to serve only Enniscorthy and the surrounding area as we have done, with your amazing support, for the last three years. You can keep up to date with developments during the month on the Slaney News and the Enjoy Enniscorthy Facebook pages. And don’t forget you can read our recent back issues online

Enniscorthy Easter Egg Hunt Ten shops based in the Rafter St, Court St, Church St, area of Enniscorthy participated in a massive Easter Egg Hunt and a Colouring Competition on Easter Saturday, 19th April. Each shop was represented on the Easter Egg Hunt card and the children visited each shop on the 19th April where a nominated employee in fancy dress stamped the card and gave each child a small egg-themed gift. When the children had visited all the shops on the card, and had it stamped in each, they returned the card to the Easter characters who were on hand to enter them into a draw for jumbo Easter Egg prizes. The characters also gladly accepted
all colouring competition entries for separate great prizes. Some shops had stalls outside their premises selling burgers, popcorn, and other treats. The balloons, flags, bunting, etc, all added to the Easter festive atmosphere. Thanks to the Town Council for helping with this decoration of the treasure hunt trail. One retailer we spoke to estimated that he had 600 children in his premises that one afternoon! Some comments afterwards on the ‘Enjoy Enniscorthy’ Facebook page included: “We had a great day! Enniscorthy owners and staff, you did a great job thanks” and “It was
lovely to see the street so busy again” and “Really enjoyed it, great buzz and yummy burgers!” Check out lots of great pics on the “Smyths Arro” Facebook page.
The Slaney News is delighted to have been part of the organising committee for this event and we look forward to helping with more successful promotions in the future. n

the sad passing of Jimmy doyle The Slaney News was deeply saddened to learn of the recent passing of Jimmy Doyle, Tomnalossett. Jimmy was a highly respected businessman in Enniscorthy running the well known Doyle’s butcher shop on Court Street. It was only in recent years that we got to know Jimmy through our involvment with the Enniscorthy Business Association of which Jimmy was Chairman. The time and commitment he devoted to his role was exemplary and his priority always was the betterment of our town of which he was so clearly very proud. We pass on our sincerest sympathy to Jimmy’s wife, Connie, and his daughters, brothers and sisters. The town of Enniscorthy will undoubtedly be the poorer for the sad passing of Jimmy. VTOS & Magnums – Celebrating 25 years! The VTOS programme celebrates 25 years in operation this year. Located locally at the Bellefield GAA Complex the programme has delivered excellent programmes for 22 of those 25 years. There have been periods of great change but VTOS has been as perennial as the grass and has kept flowering for the students year after year. Phrases such as ‘igniting the flame that burns a lifetime’, ‘It’s never too late for a second chance education’ and ‘VTOS Spells Success’ have been appropriate and will continue to be so. LAunCH Of VTOS BOOk CELEBRATinG 25 YEARS The Enniscorthy staff and students recently celebrated the publication of the VTOS 25 Years commemorative book titled Silver Linings – VTOS 25 Years: Transformation Through Education which was launched by Gerry Griffin, National VTOS Co-ordinator, at a recent conference in Athlone. The publication was made available in Enniscorthy in conjunction with the VTOS students’ photography exhibition Escape the Everyday which opened on the same occasion. There was a great atmosphere in the centre and everyone celebrated with a Magnum ice cream! Magnum also celebrates 25 years this year.
The VTOS Co-ordinator, Eithne Agar, was pleased to present a copy of the publication to the Chairman of the Enniscorthy Town Council, Cllr Johnny Mythen, as he visited the students’ photography exhibition. Well done to all the Enniscorthy staff and students. Here’s to the next 25 years and more ice cream! VTOS is currently taking the details of interested students for next September. heartbLeeD security bug Ok, so at this stage I know this is old news in the world of tech, but I felt it was important to write about it just in case anyone missed it. Security researchers have discovered a serious vulnerability in OpenSSL. OpenSSL is an opensource implementation of SSL and TLS, the protocols that secure much of what you see on the web. Recently, a critical bug was discovered that has been present for over two years, that can allow anyone on the internet to possibly uncover names, passwords, and content you send to a seemingly secure web site. The Heartbleed bug, as it’s now known, affects any sites and services running specific versions of OpenSSL (1.0.1 through 1.0.1f). Many sites may run older versions of OpenSSL that are not vulnerable, and many have likely already updated to a fixed version. Furthermore, not all sites and services use OpenSSL. It is estimated that over 66% of the web uses OpenSSL, so a good portion of the web may be vulnerable. If possible, try to avoid connecting to vulnerable sites and services until they notify you of a
Darkness Into Light
fix. Changing your password won't help until the site has fixed the bug, so wait for confirmation from your favourite sites before you go changing passwords. If and when you do get confirmation, audit and update your passwords as usual. If a site is not vulnerable but doesn't issue a statement, change your passwords just in case they were vulnerable in the past. After all, it can't hurt.

Members of Rapparees/ Starlights and Shamrocks GAA clubs attended at the beautiful Bray Town Hall on Monday 14th April for the official launch of the Arklow, Bray and Enniscorthy darkness into Light 5k Walks 2014. Joan Freeman, founder of Pieta House, spoke from the heart as usual about her own personal loss to suicide and how she came about setting up Pieta House which is now located in Tipperary and Cork as well as Dublin. Darkness Into Light is an idea that she stole from a friend because of its wonderful symbolism. This year on 10th May people will gather in 39 venues throughout Ireland along with London and Sydney to walk from darkness into the new dawn in memory of someone lost to suicide. Emotive and
30 April 2014
poignant, the message is clearly about hope, that there is light at the end of the tunnel, that there is light after the dark. Joan pleaded with everyone in attendance to support Pieta’s Mind Our Men Campaign as she said, “In the space of a week 10 more people will die in Ireland because of suicide and 8 of them will be men. We need to mind our men, they don’t open up like women do, they don’t talk about their feelings and they certainly don’t share their problems like women do. We need to mind our men and I appeal to every person doing the walk to bring two men with them on 10th May.” Joan concluded with a sincere thank you to all the volunteers in the 39 venues and congratulated Enniscorthy who held their
inaugural walk in 2013 and had 900 people turning out raising a staggering €25,000. G a rd a A d a m N o l a n , olympic boxer, who is stationed in Bray, turned up to lend his support and the Chairperson of Bray Town Council Tracy O’Brien paid tribute to the Gardai, Civil Defence, Red Cross and all the organisations who help make the walk a success. She wished each of the 3 areas well and hoped that Bray in particular would have a good response for this its first attempt. Darkness Into Light is sponsored by Electric Ireland and you can register online, or at Rapparees/Starlights or Shamrocks GAA Clubs or indeed just turn up at the venue on 10th May – couldn’t be simpler – come out and show your support for those who need our help. – Maria Nolan, PRO

Forward Movement The Slaney News is delighted to learn that forward Movement, natural health clinic, will be treating the public for free and by donation at the Golden Shears World Championships taking place in Gorey from Thursday 22nd to Sunday 25th of May. “Please see us at our stand. We will treat your hip pain, back pain, stiff neck, tired ankle, even your IBS – whatever’s bothering you on the day,” says founder and lead practitioner Shalini Sinha of Forward Movement. Considered “The Olympics of Sheep Shearing”, Forward Movement is delighted to support the Golden Shears organisers, volunteers, athletes and visiting public by looking after their natural health care needs during the 4 days. “There’s no need to be in pain at this event. Our treatments are incredibly effective while gentle and supporting your own body to correct itself. Shalini remembers her early days working as a volunteer coordinator with large festivals such as Earth Day, Fringe Theatre and International Week in Canada before emigrating to Ireland 18 years ago. “I have great admiration for the work involved to bring such an amazing event like this to Co. Wexford. More than 30 countries are bringing contestants to the southeast here, and some volunteers will put in 100s and 1000s of hours behind the scenes.
Providing free treatments at the Championships is our way of showing our deep support and appreciation to the organisers,” she says. Last summer, Shalini herself treated over 125 members of the public at the Glastonbury Festival in England. This year, she has a team with her at the Golden Shears. “We hope to treat as many people as possible each day.” Fringe events, including concerts, will take place from the 17th to 25th of May. TOURISM IS THE KEY “Strategic Tourism Action Plan for Enniscorthy 2014-2016” launched Enniscorthy Tourism, a subcommittee of Enniscorthy & district Chamber of Commerce, has been on a fruitful journey in recent years, with the support of Enniscorthy Business Association and the local Town Council, culminating in the completion of a much needed and valuable Strategic Tourism Action Plan for Enniscorthy and the surrounding areas. The Plan was launched at an Expo held in the Riverside Park Hotel on Tuesday 29th April which helped to highlight all that is great and good about our town and the vast array of tourist (and retail) attractions we have to offer. The plan highlights the need to cross-sell, to support each other and in order to be able to deliver a more informed service to those either thinking of coming to our town or already visiting, we all need to educate ourselves much more about the treasures that exist right on our own doorstep. STRATEGiC TOuRiSM ACTiOn PLAn fOR EnniSCORTHY 2014-2016 This plan aims to create a more sustained approach to tourism development by coordinating stakeholders and detailing the actions required to develop, brand and communicate the diff e re n t i a t i o n o ff e re d b y Enniscorthy as a tourist destination. A comprehensive assessment and evaluation of Enniscorthy's current tourism offering was first carried out using primary and secondary research techniques, including establishing the perceptions of 769 visitors to the town. Following on from the identification of strategy, a new brand was developed for Enniscorthy that communicates the strategic vision to the appropriate target audience. This was accompanied by an action agenda that details how to promote, brand and communicate the strategic vision to the marketplace.

kEY OBjECTiVES fOR THE STRATEGiC PLAn There are five key objectives in the Strategic Tourism Action Plan. Objective 1. To Sustain and Grow Visitor numbers. Objective 2. To Service the Customer Experience. O b j e c t i v e 3 . To C re a t e a Community of Stakeholder Engagement. Objective 4. To Build Shared Brand Awareness. Objective 5. To Innovate and E x p l o re N e w P ro d u c t Opportunities. EnniSCORTHY TOuRiSM TREnd AnALYSiS The following are some of the key insights from 769 visitors sampled. Age group of visitors: The most prevalent age group among the visitors to Enniscorthy is the 35-54 age group (52%). 75% of all visitors are over 35, meaning that the town is a rather attractive place for the more, mature professional visitors, in particular the family market. Reason for coming to Enniscorthy: Most visitors to Enniscorthy (60%) come for pleasure/leisure break. 16% arrived to visit their friends and family. 11% have visited the town because of the festival or event, 73% of tourists are repeat visitors which is a very positive reflection on the town.
kEY CHALLEnGES TO EnniSCORTHY Based upon extensive market research and widespread consultations with Enniscorthy stakeholders, a number of key challenges have been identified and can be classified in to four main categories: 1. Product development: Enniscorthy faces intense competition from other destinations in Ireland. The key to differentiating a destination from any other is its ability to continuously innovate around its existing and potential tourism products. 2. Stakeholder Engagement: A critical component for creating a sustainable destination in Enniscorthy is the development of a memorandum of understanding between key stakeholders to engage with one another. 3. Visitor Servicing: Even though the results of the Enniscorthy visitor survey were quite good overall, providing a continually excellent visitor service is always a challenge. 4. Marketing: One of the key challenges facing Enniscorthy is to effectively coordinate the marketing efforts within the destination. We will carry more details of the Plan in our next issue of 27th May. n

Advice & hints from your locAl hArdwAre teAm sUmmEr GardEn tiPs After the spring flurry of gardening chores and tasks is over, the maintenance part of gardening begins. Taking care of the garden all through the summer means the difference between a weedy, neglected space and a productive, bountiful garden. With a little luck, a little knowledge and a little work, your weed patrol, harmful insect management, gardening shortcuts and healthy garden practices will pay off. A few gardening tips and tricks save time and work in the summer garden. dead-heading This is also listed as a spring chore, but you should continue to dead-head flowers that have passed throughout the summer (this increases bloom time and strengthens the plant). Pay special attention to dead-heading flowers that self-seed once they have passed so that you maintain control over where they spread in your garden. If you want to propagate certain plants, you can save the flower heads for planting at a later date. Pest Patrol Pest patrol can mean the difference between a few leaves with bite marks or losing an entire plant to a hungry insect infestation. Make it a habit to walk through the garden once a day with a

bucket and a little soapy water. If you see tomato horn worms, cucumber beetles or cutworms, pick them off your plants and dispatch them in the soapy water. Other harmful insects such as scale and aphids require a spray bottle with soapy water or insecticidal soap for treatment. Finding and treating harmful bugs before they become a horde enables you to rid your garden of them quickly and prevent serious damage. staking & support Put stakes and supports in place for tall, herbaceous plants, like peonies and delphiniums. This will prevent them from falling over or looking messy as they grow taller and heavy with blooms with the progressing season. Likewise, as climbers display new growth, be sure to position them on a support system in order to maintain control over where they grow and prevent an untidy appearance. Weed control Use mulch, either chopped hay, black plastic garden sheeting or shredded newspapers, to control weeds. Keep an extra large black plastic bag full of mulch on hand to smother any emerging weeds you find. Don't let weeds flower and go to seed. Pull or smother them before they mature and have a
chance to become invasive. Mulch also helps conserve water, allowing you to water less often. Watering Don’t forget to keep up with your watering, especially as the very hot weather sets in. If you don’t water enough, roots will stay near the surface, making them even more prone
to the heat. An inch of water a week is a good rule of thumb, so don’t just sprinkle, water deeply to keep those roots digging deeper. Use a chipper/shredder Invest in a chipper/shredder or mulching lawn mower and chop up everything you can before putting it in your compost pile or bin. Toss all garden refuse into the compost except weed flowers or seed heads and diseased plant materials. It speeds up decomposition, mixes compost materials quickly and creates compost much faster than larger pieces. For more hints & toolbox tips… facebook.com / jdonohoeproviders

Annette is concerned about pylons, smart water meters and the relevant health issues attached to them, commercial rates and the struggle of small business, the need for government to be proactive in saving post offices and small shops, to name but a few. “I'm not saying that I will change the world if I'm elected, but I will work hard to try to make County Wexford a better place in which to live.” n

Bye, Bye Brooklyn As we gathered at Enniscorthy Castle on Wednesday 9th April to say a fond farewell to the cast and crew of Brooklyn one would have to wonder if Enniscorthy would ever be the same again! All the excitement, all the novelty, all the glamour that was Brooklyn took us back for o n e w e e k t o a d i ff e re n t Enniscorthy in a different time and we as a town and as a community warmed to it in a very special way. It brought us all together as we stood and waited and watched for the Stars and it gave us back a sense of affection and pride for our town as we saw it in a new, or should that be an old, light. Perhaps a golden light is a better word for it – like the light shed on the Athenaeum in one of the night-time dance scenes captured by many of town’s photographers but none better than Liz Wildes’ beautiful photographs. It was a nostalgic look back at our town as it once was in perhaps a time of greater innocence and simplicity and we as a community for one week had a chance to retrieve and in some way relive that time long lost. The Location Manager, Gordon Wycherley, a Cork man, informed us at Enniscorthy Library on Thursday 10th April that it was by no means a fore-

gone conclusion that Brooklyn would be filmed in Enniscorthy, indeed when the scouting party came a couple of months ago their first impression was far from favourable allowing that Enniscorthy had “far too many PVC windows and too many satellite dishes”. However, after touring Ireland and visiting numerous other locations with Bandon, Co. Cork, emerging as a forerunner they returned to Enniscorthy to deliberate on a Saturday evening as dusk was falling and as it happened the light was just right as they looked down John Street and made their decision there and then to film here. What a travesty it would have been had we missed all the razzmatazz that was Brooklyn and isn’t it only right that it be filmed in the town where the story began. As the Director, John Crowley, said at the Reception in the Castle, “I loved the signs ‘Enniscorthy welcomes Brooklyn’ and I can’t wait to see the sign saying ‘Brooklyn welcomes Enniscorthy.’” Well done to Town Clerk David Minogue and the Town Council for organising the event at the Castle – it was a lovely touch and one that the actors and crew really appreciated – and a most splendid venue for the occasion. Saoirse Ronan was delighted to be presented with

her bouquet of flowers and was completely overwhelmed with the presentation of the beautiful Enniscorthy pin made by Bourkes Jewellers. She was admiring the Ibar Carty collection of photographs when I came across her and seemed to be well pleased with Ibar’s work. She had no hesitation standing for snaps or chatting with the many people who wanted their moment with her – yours truly included. Domhnall Gleeson was enjoying himself thoroughly with a pint of Guinness in hand and surrounded by other members of the cast and crew but likewise had no hesitation satisfying the snap-happy multitudes. Both actors were perfectly approachable and totally at ease with the company and seemed to be genuinely enjoying the event.
It was a lovely occasion with a wonderful feel-good factor to it and a credit to those who organised it. Nuala Tobin Stack, sister of Colm Toibin, was presented with a bouquet of flowers by Michael Bennett and said that her brother would love to have been here for the filming and the Reception but unfortunately due to work commitments in the States it was not possible for him to do so. The large gathering continued to mix and mingle, no-one really anxious to leave and certainly noone anxious to say goodbye. Really looking forward now to the premiere of Brooklyn in Enniscorthy – now there’s one for the Town Council to organise – oh, but we won’t have a Town Council by then… so who will see to it then? – Maria Nolan

Enniscorthy Toastmasters The division d final international Speech and Evaluation Contest was held in Gorey on Sunday 13th April last. Division D represents 20 clubs in southern Ireland. There were 5 contestants in The International Speech Contest and 5 contestants for the Evaluation Speech Contest. The competition was of a very high standard with energetic speakers who had a firm grasp on the art of speaking. Enniscorthy Toastmasters Club took first place in both contests. Yvonne Jordan won 1st Place in the International Speech con-
test with a speech entitled “Yes and Yes”. Yvonne delivered her speech with enthusiasm, style and humour. She entertained the audience with messages of Emotional Intelligence and spoke of Empathy – the ability to recognise other people’s emotions. Her delivery was powerful, effective and outstanding. Sarah O’Connor won 1st Place in the Evaluation Speech contest. Sarah analysed the speech clearly, was specific in her praise and constructive in her suggestions. Sarah’s evaluation was concise and crafted with great humour and well-rounded in her conclusion.
Both ladies will go forward to the next level of competing which is District 71, including all clubs in Ireland and Britain. This will be held at the King Laoire Conference 9th-11th May at The Royal Marine Hotel, Dun Laoghaire. We wish them both every success. Toastmasters International is a world leader in communication and leadership development. Members improve their speaking and leadership skills by attending one of the 14,350 clubs in 122 countries that make up their global network of meeting locations.
Membership in Toastmasters is one of the greatest investments you can make in yourself. A Toastmasters meeting is a learn-by-doing workshop in which participants improve their speaking and leadership skills in a no-pressure and friendly atmosphere. There is no instructor in a Toastmasters meeting. Instead, members evaluate one another’s presentations. This feedback process is a key part of the programme’s success. Egg-cellent Easter Egg-citement at Bellefield
Stunning, beautiful, energetic, creative, inspiring, artistic, vigorous, striking, vivacious, spectacular… I cannot use enough favourable adjectives to describe what the delighted audience experienced at the Grande Final of the Strictly Club Dancing at the Riverside Park Hotel on 6th April. Breathtaking performances were dished up one after the other as 16 dancing couples from 10 different clubs battled it out for the honour of becoming the first ever County Strictly Club Dancing Champions. Scintillating Cha Chas, fascinating Charlestons, intriguing Tangos, beguiling Waltzes, captivating Jives with the most dazzling outfits, the most mesmerising footwork and the most magnificent moves witnessed to date in the marvel that was Strictly Club Dancing. The level of fitness, the standard of dancing and the attention to detail was staggering. The judges, Annemarie
Stafford, Tara Anne Byrne, Denis Howell and Liam Spratt, were blown away by the commitment, the dedication, the amazing agility and degree of excellence displayed by all the dancers making their task of picking a winner an extremely arduous one. The organisers, Wexford Supporters Club and County Board, had stipulated that the balance of the vote would rest with the judges as the object of this final exercise was to choose the best dancing couple in the county. Eloquent MC for the event, Michael Doyle of South East Radio, applauded all the competitors saying that any one of them could be the winner as he called on County Secretary, Margaret Doyle, and Wexford Supporters PRO, Maria Nolan, to present each dancer with a trophy. Des Croke of the Wexford Supporters Club then came on stage with the precious envelope and thanked
all for coming and supporting Wexford GAA, particularly the dancers, the judges and the MC before handing the result to Michael Doyle who announced Hayley Murphy and Joe Gardiner of Castletown in 3rd place, Debbie Byrne and Michael Halpin of Castletown in 2nd place and the winners and County Champions – husband and wife team from Glynn-Barntown – Cathy and Vincent Browne. As audience, judges, MC, organisers and dancers filtered out into the Enniscorthy night there was general consensus that it was the best night’s entertainment they had ever had for €10 and one that they were extremely glad they hadn’t missed and they are already looking forward to next year! You can’t get a better commendation than that. Well done to everyone concerned. – Maria Nolan PRO Wexford Supporters Club
Well done once again to the members of the Greater Bellefield Area Community Group who hosted a marvellous fun occasion in the Greater Bellefield Area on Easter Sunday morning for all the children of the locality aged between 3 and 11 years who arrived in their droves to join in the Easter Egg Treasure Hunt. And indeed the Easter Bunny had been most generous making ample provision for every child who turned up and then some. Once the hunting was over and every child had received an egg the committee sprang into action with good old-fashioned fun as they lined the kids up according to age for the old favourite spud and spoon races. Poems by the Slaney Marie Newport of Nosh + Coffee on Slaney Place, Enniscorthy, has announced that a new monthly poetry reading, "Poems by the Slaney", will take place starting on Thursday 8th May at 7.30pm. Working in association with poets Denis Collins and Donal Cullen, Marie hopes that this new event will become a hub for poets and poetry lovers in the Enniscorthy area. Denis Collins will MC the poetry evenings which will be presented in an open mic format on the second Thursday of each month. Each reader will be invited to read for ten minutes giving them a good opportunity to showcase their own poems or indeed their favourite poems by other poets. There are many excellent poets in Enniscorthy and its environs, as seen in the
series of "Scaldy Detail" publications, and with this new reading series it is hoped to establish a regular venue for people to share their poems and their love of poetry. Each evening poets and readers can sign up to read by arriving between 7.30pm and 8.00pm and putting their name to the list. When you arrive at Nosh + Coffee each evening you will be able to select your corner to settle into and order your first of several cups of good tea/coffee or maybe a glass of wine or two. Immediately there will be people to chat with who write or love poems and there will be books to peruse and share. To mark the launch of the "Poems by the Slaney" reading series there will be complimentary tea, coffee, cupcakes and excellent poems.

Street Rhythms DanceFest 2014 The Dance Fest will start on Friday 6th June and run until Sunday 8th June this year. Following the success of the Friday night celebration G R A N D PA R A D E a n d STREET PARTY last year the organisers are going to do the same again for 2014. The atmosphere and craic at the street party was great last year with participation from not only all the local dance clubs and schools which were in the parade but everyone who came along to watch. DJ Liam Sharkey had children, teens and adults alike rocking to old favourites and the crowd on the dance floor for Crazy Frog was a fantastic sight. DJ Liam will be taking charge and guaranteeing great fun for everyone again this year.
After such a great start on Friday night the organisers plan to continue the fun and frolics through Saturday with Baby Bop kicking off the action, a puppeteer, local dance groups strutting their stuff, Babcock & Bobbins comedy duo, Fairytales at the Castle, Jazz on Sunday, international dance acts, more Fairytales at the Castle and traditional crafts on Rafter Street on Saturday and Sunday. All activities are for the whole family and you are encouraged to go down to the Market Square and the Castle to get involved in this brilliant weekend of festivities. Enniscorthy – irEland's 1950s rock ‘n’ roll town The South East Rock ‘n’ Roll Club has launched a new tourism initiative for Enniscorthy with the help of Colm Neville (Chair of Enniscorthy Tourism) and Michael Bennett (Chair of Enniscorthy Chamber). The initiative is focused on branding Enniscorthy as
Ireland's "1950's Rock n Roll Town". This title can be rightfully used as over the last 7 years Enniscorthy has grown into one of the three main centres of activity on this island – the other two centres being the large cities of Dublin and Belfast. The banner below was unveiled at the launch and it will
also be used on a new Facebook page to help drive more tourists to attend Rock 'n' Roll events in Enniscorthy. The Facebook page will be used to promote the regular events and highlight special offers on accommodation from local hotels and B&B's. The banner lists ten key aspects to the local R’n’R scene

Lantern brings leading lights to Wexford The Dublin Gospel Choir return to Wexford on Saturday 24th May in Greenacres.
Mick Flannery celebrates the release of his highly anticipated fourth album ‘By The Rule’, with two shows in the Wexford Arts Centre on the 12th and 13th of May. Wexford based Lantern.ie is one of Ireland’s leading event management and marketing companies. Run by two Co. Wexford natives, Brian Byrne and Barry Ennis, Lantern is the company responsible for the annual visit of the spectacular Spiegeltent to Wexford town and the huge range of concerts there every October. Lantern puts on many shows all over Ireland and thankfully a sizeable proportion of those takes place in our own county. Three upcoming shows definitely worth seeing and hearing are Mick Flannery, The Dublin Gospel Choir and Lloyd Cole.
MICk FLANNERy The album ‘By The Rule’ features some of Mick’s finest material to date and is preceded by the first single ‘Get What You Give’. After a short tour in the U S i n M a rc h 2 0 1 3 M i c k moved to Berlin where he based himself for 7 months to write songs for a new album. From there he toured Germany, UK, US, Ireland and Australia. Mick returned to Ireland to record with producers Ryan Freeland and Christian Best in December 2013. ‘By the Rule’, an album of 13 tracks,
was recorded in Beachpark Studios Rathcoole over a two week period in December. The album was mixed in Ryan’s studio Stampede Origin Studios California in January 2014. Mick and his band will play the Wexford Arts Centre on Monday 12th and Tuesday 13th May at 8pm, tickets €24 including booking available from the Wexford Arts Centre 053-9123764 and www.wexfordartscentre.ie The Album “By The Rule” will be released by Universal Music Ireland on 9th May 2014. ■
Probably the only act in the world to collaborate with artists as diverse as Stevie Wonder, Nitin Sawhney, John Legend, Riverdance, James Brown, Damien Rice, Rod Stewart, The Chieftains and in July 2013 with the legendary composer Ennio Morricone, The Dublin Gospel Choir continues to amaze audiences all over Europe with a brilliantly adaptable repertoire of songs. Formed in 1995 as a junior school choir in inner city Dublin, they have grown to perform at an average of 100 events per year, and are the only act to play on The Main Stage every single year at Electric Picnic Festival in Ireland. They officially launched two of Ireland’s largest arenas (Croke Park Stadium 82,000 / The Aviva Stadium 50,000). They are also the first gospel artists to break into the Top 30 Irish Charts, and with a waiting list of over 200 people and significant public profile, their current membership has never been higher. A household name in Ireland, they are one of the most-often featured music
acts on national television and radio, and after raising the roof off the Spiegeltent Wexford back in October 2013, they are really looking forward to returning to The Greencares Gallery on
May 24th 2014. The Dublin Gospel Choir play in Greenacres Gallery on Saturday 24th May at 8pm, tickets available from Greenacres, Whites for Music and Wexford Arts Centre. ■
‘Grease’ The Musical Congratulations to Enniscorthy Musical Society on their wonderful production of Grease which ran from 22nd–26th April. With a mainly young and relatively inexperienced cast the group put on a brilliant spectacle with energy and enthusiasm combined with acting skill
and superb singing. All the leads were excellent but a particular mention for young Monageer man, John Murphy, who played the leading male role of Danny – this was John’s first ever appearance in any kind of a musical and he pulled it off with aplomb. The staging was faultless
and the sound, even at the back of the large Colaiste Bride hall, was superb. Well done to all the technical crew. Here’s hoping for some AIMS nominations and we are already looking forward to next year’s production – whatever that might be! ■

A celestial celebration was enjoyed by all who attended Enniscorthy Choral Society’s 21st Birthday concert on Friday 11th April at St. Mary’s. However, the evening began on a sombre note with MC David Medcalf remembering some of the members who have gone to their eternal reward since the group was formed 21 years ago, the most recent passings being Liam O’Leary one of the founding members and Jimmy Doyle whose death has sent the entire Enniscorthy community into shock, David said, but adding that the show must go on and the dear departed wouldn’t have it any other way. The concert began with a cosmopolitan repertoire from the Choral Society in Swahili, Latin, Italian and English – Africa, Jesu dulcis memoria, Matona Mia Cara, In Remembrance from ‘Requiem’ and Moon River from

Two seraphic visions then appeared before us as if from on high in the form of the beautif u l K i n s e l l a s i s t e r s f ro m Clonleigh, Palace – well indeed where else did you expect princesses to live. Princesses or angels, 19 year old Clodagh and her younger sister 14 year old Stephanie took our collective breath away with their paradisaical voices and their divine performance of Puccini’s O Mio Babbino Caro and Nella Fantasia by Ennio Morricone and left us famished for more. They were like all the Disney princesses together with their exquisite full length coral lace gowns accentuating their lovely skin tones and their luxurious, blonde tresses. The full house was then treated to a popular ensemble from the Gorey Choral Society

enniscorthy credit union Limited Enniscorthy Credit Union Limited (ECU) was founded following a public meeting held in the Bennett’s Hotel, Enniscorthy, on Monday 13th April 1964. The first board of directors decided to provide credit union facilities on Friday nights between 7.30pm and 8.30pm with accommodation being provided by the governing body of the Athenaeum. Loan Protection and Life Savings Insurance was obtained for the members by December 1964. At the end of its first year it had assets of £1,0182-11 (1,018 pounds, 2 shillings & 11 pence); loans to members were £447 which were financed by members shares of £987. Today we have assets of over €130 million, a measure of the success of the credit union and of the esteem in which it is held by its 27,000 members.
Friday night opening still applied with directors and other committee members acting as tellers. The credit union was growing from strength to strength and becoming a very popular place to save and borrow in Enniscorthy. In December 1970 the directors decided to advertise for a full-time employee and on the 11th of Janurary 1971 ECU hired its first employee, Mr. Seamus Comerford. This allowed the credit union to open to the public four days a week. Almost from the time of its inception, the directors harboured the ambition of purchasing a premises for credit union use. The board of directors acquired No.1 Market Square in April 1972. A Post Office Bond to the value of some £5,000 was cashed in to help pay for the new building. The new

celebrating 50 years serving the community
Enniscorthy Credit Union is celebrating 50 years serving its members this year having faithfully served 27,000 local members over five decades. Through its loans and saving accounts, Enniscorthy Credit Union has enhanced the lives of people in its locality during this time and has always been there for its members. In 1972 a second member of staff was employed and this coincided with the purchase of an accounting machine which was the first sign of technology and computers in the credit union. By 1973 ECU had grown at a very fast pace. By 1975 as an indication of the continued growth the local area covered (Common Bond area) was extended for a second time from the original 3 mile radius to now include all within a 6 mile radius and also to include Ferns. Then in 1981 the pinnacle of development occurred when the credit union invested in some of the most modern computer equipment available which enabled the members to receive an up-to-date balance on their account each time they carried out a transaction. One of the first significant milestones from a financial perspective was reached in 1983 when the assets passed that magical one million pound mark. Early in the financial year October ’83 to September ’84 members’ shares and loans also surpassed the million pound mark. In 1994, thirty years after the initial meeting was
held to establish a credit union in the town the membership had grown to a staggering 9,500 who held a combined savings of €6,844,681 and had loans to the value of €5,298,791. By now the credit union had become one of the great success stories of the community and had out grown its premises in the Market S q u a re . F o l l o w i n g t h e Christmas break of 1994 ECU opened its doors to a brand new, purpose built building in Abbey Square, where it is currently located. For the decade following the move to the new premises in Abbey Square the growth of the credit union continued to rise at almost an exponential rate. Membership increased from 9,500 in December 1994 to a staggering 22,700 in December 2005, an increase of over 100 new members per month without any promotion being carried out to attract new members. With a current membership of 27,000, this growth has continued at an average of almost 50 members per month. During that same decade many more changes took place when authorisa-

tion to act as Insurance Intermediaries was obtained. This allowed the credit union to offer many more services to our members such as R e p a y m e n t P ro t e c t i o n Insurance (RPI), Death Benefit Insurance (DBI), House Insurance and Travel Insurance. Regulation also took on a major change during the same period with the introduction of the new Credit Union Act 1997. The next significant chapter in the life of ECU started in early 2010, when proceedings began in order to carry out a transfer of
engagements of Ballymurn Credit Union to ECU. The transfer of engagements took many months of meetings and discussions and was completed by the end of September 2010. Following the amalgamation ECU now has a membership of 27,000 and services a common bond that has almost one third of the county’s population and covers a geographic area within the county of similar proportions. The original premises used by Ballymurn Credit Union in Ballymurn village now acts as a suboffice and provides all the services provided by our main office at Abbey Square. Abbey Square premises

Posh at Nosh Seldom when you arrive in a local town will you leave without going into a café or bistro for some R&R (rest and relaxation). When I go to Enniscorthy I inevitably visit some café or restaurant and enjoy a meal, coffee and what’s on offer. We in Enniscorthy are lucky to have some really nice eating houses and cafés with a variety of menus so you can eat to your heart’s delight. For us tired and weary folk who pound the pavements of Enniscorthy on a daily basis I’ve got to say there is no shortage of hostelries of all kinds. Enniscorthy town is in the middle of Co. Wexford with lots on offer. Shoppers and tourists alike can enjoy our great little town – a great place to eat, shop and drink, and now we are becoming more popular than ever now that we are in the movies (Brooklyn). When I came off the movie set recently I was tired after a long day and the remedy I had in mind was a strong cup of splendid coffee. I landed at Nosh + Coffee and I found a local welcome, a south east ‘hello’ from Marie Newport, and her staff were equally charming to me. I’m not a movie star yet but I got treated just like one. I sat down and had my coffee and a chat with Ms Newport.
I enjoyed the visit and my coffee, down the hatch, revived and refreshed me after my long day’s work on Brooklyn. My time at Nosh went well. Marie Newport told me she has great plans for her café. It’s being refurbished, decorated, the menu revamped, all sorts of things happening at Nosh + Coffee, making it bigger and better with new staff and much to offer tourists and shoppers alike – a perfect place to unwind. I’m not going into detail about the menu, I will leave that up to you to judge for yourself – but you will get what I got and that is a good experience. I talk to Marie about the upcoming open mic poetry evening happening there on 8th May from 7.30pm onwards and

The Wexford Food and Wine Festival is now approaching its 6th Birthday, and following the huge success of the last five festivals, it has established itself as the premier food and drink event here in the South East. Be sure to keep the 22nd to the 25th May free for this year’s event. The Festival would like to thank the 15,000 people who descended on the streets of Wexford in 2013 for the weekend basked in sunshine. The Wexford Food and Wine Festival is organised by a voluntary committee of local people on a non-profit making basis. The committee endeavour to have as many of the events free of charge as possible but some events do have a small cover charge purely to cover costs. Any profits generated are donated to charities and worthy local causes. This year there will be more exhibitors than before and an ever expanding waiting list of those who would love to come on board. There will also be better linkages between “Selskar” and “South Main Street” with a busker and food trail in operation. The 2014 festival programme will be bigger and better, providing a tasty schedule of mouthwatering events for adults and children plus lots of entertainment, music and fun for all the family! Focus on Unique Avis Breslin, a native of Ballycanew, has become synonymous with the word fashion in Enniscorthy. She first opened her doors to the fashion conscious of the town over 12 years ago at Flair at 15 Main Street and has developed a loyal client base and a reputation for affordable style and good quality brands. In September 2012 a bigger and brighter premises became available at 19 Main Street and Avis grabbed the chance to move and re-invent herself under the new name Unique – as she says her-
self ‘Unique in name and unique in style’. And Avis certainly has oodles of style, ‘No matter how difficult things might be I have a flair for fashion and I love it’, Avis says speaking about her passion for fashion and in particular her love for boutique clothing and her desire to bring high quality clothing to Enniscorthy. Unique Boutique offers a stellar line of brands and labels among them Jorli, Robell, Tia, Jensen Womens, Charisma, Lady Laura and Decollage ranging from casual to the ultra dressy for that

special occasion. Unique caters for sizes 8 to 22 as the stylish proprietor proclaims – it’s not about size, or shape or age – it’s all about feeling beautiful whatever age, size or shape you are – and the goal and aspiration of Unique Boutique is to make you feel beautiful and good about yourself. Avis’ fashion tip for the summer season is to invest in a good pair of white trousers – try her Robell skinny stretch range she says – guaranteed to drop a size or two in them – now that can’t
be bad and she is carrying them in a wide variety of colours and at only €45 for the short leg and €49.90 for full length they won’t break the bank either. How’s that for affordable fashion. Avis also advises that a good blazer is an essential piece in a summer wardrobe. I asked Avis how she was coping with the dirty ‘R’ word – the Recession. ‘Well we haven’t given up yet’ she laughed ‘but we are having to work a lot harder and hope that it will all be worth it in the end. I would say to anyone who has ambition to do something – to go and do it and not to let the Recession stop you’. When she first began it was a risky business and it still

is she explains – ‘business is all about risk. But the risk is worth it if you are doing something you love and I really love fashion’, Avis said. Avis is most appreciative of the support she gets from the people of Enniscorthy and hopes that they will continue to call in to herself and Gabriel Whitty for a browse and a chat and with a bit of luck a purchase. Avis and Gabriel will give you every assistance and will be only too glad to help you put a full outfit together including accessories, whatever the occasion.
Unique clothing is bright, colourful, and affordable – so do drop in to Avis and have a look at what she has to offer – you won’t be disappointed. This is the fourth in my series Focus on Fashion in Enniscorthy and I have been more than impressed with what each of the four shops have to offer so next time you are looking for something special or even just something new, take a look at what’s available in your own town before you head further afield, and help Enniscorthy to help itself. – Maria Nolan

At the Beauty Sanctuary along with all the usual beautifications like eyebrow waxing, tinting and thread-
ing, facials, tan, pedicure, manicure and makeup you can also avail of relaxing treatments like hot stone massage, reflexology, Indian head massage and Hopi ear coning – now how’s that for a complete set up and Emma even has plans later in the year to organise makeup classes and demonstrations. Located beside a hairdressing salon – Oylegate is fast becoming a one stop beauty village – you know what they say it’s all about location, location, location.
Emma is no stranger to the beauty industry having previously been in business in Oylegate under the name Reflections which she began as soon as she left Beauty College in Kilkenny. After two years of hard work she decided to take a well-earned break and did a bit of traveling in Thailand and Australia and went to work for her dad when she returned. But Emma’s passion is most definitely in the body artistry area and she couldn`t wait to get back at it and besides
she had built up a good client base at Oylegate who were anxious for her to return. On Wednesday 23rd April Emma opened her doors once again with special offers in all areas and products for sale. Emma’s Skincare Range Phyts is 100% organic and comes through a Dublin distributor from a French company and really feeds and nourishes the skin making it look and feel younger. Meet Wexford’s Makers! Susan Brindley of the Design & Crafts Council of Ireland was on hand to launch the very first Craft Trail for the ‘Model’ county at a Wexford craft showcase in Greenacres Gallery on Thursday, April 3. The new trail aimed at visitors to the region offers an insight to nineteen different craft makers on a driving route right across the county. The free trail directory features a guide containing maps and directions to the galleries, craft workshops and exhibition spaces in Wexford. Visitors can meet the makers in many of the workshops and gain a greater insight to the skills involved in their own craft. Milliners, Potters, Weavers,
Wood turners, Sculptors and Jewelers all feature across the trail offering visitors an opportunity to view a broad variety of traditional crafting skills. Launching the Wexford Craft Trail, Susan Brindley, Head of Public Affairs & Communications, said, “I am delighted to launch this wonderful Craft Trail for County Wexford which showcases the wealth of creative talent that exists throughout the county. This easy to navigate trail offers domestic and international visitors unique opportunities to discover authentic Irish crafts; to meet makers in their studios, see them at work, learn more about the stories behind products designed and made in
Wexford, and of course to purchase a piece of craft for themselves or a loved one. I would like to commend Wexford Craft Network on coming together to create such a professional trail, which will greatly enhance a visitor’s experience of the county. I wish them every success.” The Craft Trail is the latest offering in a series of trails across County Wexford including a Garden Trail, a Heritage Trail, a Walking Trail and Food Trail. It is hoped the new trail will offer a boost to revenue in the leisure and pleasure business in the county. Commenting at the event, Wexford Local Development Chairperson, Pat Rath said: “We have been working with the crafters, the gardeners, the walking trail guides and the guardians of the heritage sites of Wexford for the last three years developing these trails throughout the county, there is a wonderful diversity of trails now on offer and there really is something for all tastes and interests. We continue to work on this very successful offering for tourism as there is huge potential to develop other trails across the county.” Chair of the Wexford Craft
Pictured launching the Wexford Craft Trail are Craft Trail members Lisa Courtney, Robert O’Connor from The Woodturning Studio, Sculptor Gilly Thomas, Potter Paul Maloney and Annette Whelan from Creations by Annette Whelan. Pic: Patrick Browne.
Trail, Padraic Parle said, “This craft trail sits comfortably with the artistic history of the town and county of Wexford and the current prevalence of artists and makers living and working here. There are nineteen different offerings across the trail and each has a very diverse craft. Workshops, exhibitions and events are held right across the year so this trail really enables all of us crafters to come together, combine our skills and host a variety of interesting events for future visitors.
This is an opportunity to discover studios; workshops and even garden workshops not normally open to the public.” The Wexford Craft Trail features: The Blue Egg Gallery, Martin Doyle Goldsmith, Sculptor Gilly Thomas, Creations by Annette Whelan, Textile Artist Phil Stewart, Robert O’Connor Woodturning Studio, Blacksmith and Designer Dainius Varnelis, Potter Paul Maloney, The Ros Tapestry, Ceadogan Rugs, Tir na Nog Creations, Weaver Terry Dunne,
Grainne Kenny Design, Potter Patricia Howard, Woodturner Maurice Duggan, Ballyelland Pottery, Milliner Patsy Flood O’Connor, The Forge CraftShop and Milliner Amanda Byrne. Visitors will be encouraged to try their hand at various have-a-go venues, including creating a work of art at future events in the Wexford Craft Trail Calendar. Meitheal cuts Wexford TD John Browne has expressed his concern and disappointment at the government’s decision to cut the Meitheal programme in schools in the county. The scheme operates in 21 schools, and was rolled out following a successful pilot programme in New Ross CBS in 1997. “I am extremely disappointed with the Education Minister’s refusal to reinstate funds to secure the future of the Meitheal programme to secondary school students in Wexford. It’s been running successfully in 21 schools across the county for more than a decade, providing reassurance and support to students making the transition from primary to secondary school. The scheme sees senior students trained in personal development, identity, self-esteem, communication, listening and assertiveness skills in order to become leaders. After their training, each leader is made responsible for a group of first years to ensure their smooth transition into secondary school”, commented Deputy Browne. “This is a very worthwhile
scheme and only costs the Government €40,000 a year to maintain in Wexford. I have received letters from Meitheal leaders and teachers expressing their concern that the funding has been withdrawn. There has been a lot of media coverage in recent years about bullying and the impact it has on teenagers. Principals have told me that the Meitheal scheme has led to a reduction in bullying and added to the well-being of students in their schools. “The Meitheal programme was first allocated funding in 2001 by then Education Minister Mary Hanafin. All successive Ministers continued to make money available to keep this project operational. However, Ruairi Quinn has decided to attack this valued resource by scrapping the funding. It’s the latest mean spirited cut introduced by this Minister. €40,000 is a paltry amount to ensure the well-being and confidence of our children. Compare that to the tens of millions of euros that are being squandered on outside consultants and advisors for State quangos.” n
Another busy month for Enniscorthy Chess Club!! On Friday 28th March the Gaelscoil Inis Corthaidh team comprising of Robbie Kildea, Dean and Adam Copeland and Dylan Nolan, all club members, were invited to participate in the annual Leinster Gaelscoil chess competition. This year it was held in the Mansion House Dublin and the guest of honour was to be the infamous GM Gary Kasparov. There was great excitement at the prospect of meeting him but unfortunately, due to unforeseen circumstances, he was unable to attend. Tanaiste Eamon Gilmore was however in attendance as too was a very proud Muinteoir Pol (School Chess Coach). The
day finished on a high with Gaelscoil Inis Corthaidh taking the title which was presented to them by the Deputy Lord Mayor of Dublin. Later that evening five players took part in the Cork Congress. By way of introduction, my name is Phil Skelton and I'm a member of Slaney Cycling Club in Enniscorthy, Co. Wexford. When I first took up cycling seriously around four years ago, I became acutely aware of its inherent dangers from listening to other cyclists and also from personal experience of being grazed by a driver's wing mirror whilst being overtaken. This unnerved me massively, realising the fine line between wobbling in to the nearby ditch and a potentially more severe outcome. Then, following the alarming death of a second cyclist on Wexford roads over a 12 month period, I was moved to doing some research on what other countries had done about this particular problem. 22 US states have dealt with this by passing legislation
21
specifying a safe overtaking space. This particular law states that drivers must maintain a specified safe distance while overtaking a cyclist. This specified distance varies from country to country but the internationally recognised safe distance is 1.5 metres. Countries across Europe including Belgium, Germany, France and most recently, Portugal, have adopted this specified safe overtaking space. Queensland, Australia too is set to trial this law later this year. I decided to set up a campaign to have 1.5 metres of overtaking space written into Irish law in conjunction with a safety campaign. Having spent 10 years in Australia, I was drawn to some campaigns there and following some sound advice from Dave Sharp from Safe Cycling Australia, I set up the stayin' alive at 1.5 campaign. There are other cycling campaigns out there but my intention was to narrow the focus to that of 1.5 metres safe overtaking as I feel in doing so, there is a greater chance of success. A Facebook page called stayinaliveat1.5 was set up with regular safety messages which I encourage users to share. The page also has a link to a letter to transport minister Leo Varadkar basically requesting to have our current ambiguous legislation to be clarified in line with international best practice. The current reference to this issue is on page 43 of the Rules of the Road. The advice here is that you 'should' give extra space when overtak-
Cois na hAbhann reaps the benefits of what it sows as it wins “Garden, Home and Lifestyle Centre of The Year” (Small) for fifth year running. There was great excitement in Dublin last month as the results of the Bord Bia Garden C e n t r e o f t h e Ye a r w e r e announced. The owners of the top garden centres in the country had assembled to see who would take the highly coveted awards. Cois na hAbhann, Camolin, scooped the top award “Garden, Home and Lifestyle Centre” (Small) for the fifth year running, confirming their place as one of the top garden and lifestyle centres in Ireland. Commenting on Cois na hAbhann’s win the Bord Bia judge said: “Cois na hAbhann won this award for their commitment to develop the busi-

The aim of the stayin' alive at 1.5 campaign is to have this ambiguous law defined as 1.5 metres, backed up by the relevant change to the overtaking section in the Irish statute book. This 1.5 metre safe overtaking is the suggested space recommended by the RSA in their recent ad called Cyclists – we all share the road (http://youtu.be/JB9d-c-M7D0). We have also asked for 'share the road' signage in relation to cyclists be erected as a reminder to other road users. On the stayin' alive at 1.5 Facebook page too is a link to an online petition. I myself and others have received replies from the Transport minister to the sample letter attached. Minister Varadkar feels that current laws are
s
strong enough and is proposing more awareness in relation to this matter. While this in my view is helpful, it will not go far enough to deal with the problem. We all remember those shocking ads pertaining to drink-driving warning motorists of the risks and consequences of that behaviour a while back. They had some benefit in changing drivers attitude towards drink-driving, but it was not until random breath testing was phased in along with powers given to the Gardai to issue penalty points, fine, charge and ultimately imprison offenders who drove under the influence, that really made the change resulting in fewer road casualties. Minister Varadkar also feels that this rule would be difficult to enforce.

ness, whilst continuing to provide an excellent customer experience.” The business was also awarded a “5 star Gold rating” and is one of only three garden centres in Ireland to achieve this grade. (In order to achieve this rating you must score 90% or more in each of the categories accessed). Finally, Cois na hAbhann also received a special award for ‘Best Plant and Merchandising Display’. The judges noted that they have perfected a unique style when it comes to visual merchandising and display, especially in the external plant area which sets them apart from everyone else. Cois na hAbhann is a spectacular destination centre which opened in 2007. It comprises an award winning garden, home and lifestyle centre as well as The
Bay Tree Café which specialises in tasty lunches and delicious home baked cakes. It provides the complete lifestyle experience. Cois na hAbhann’s Maria Nolan says: “We are thrilled to receive this award for the fourth time. It really proves that the hard work and dedication of all our staff to ensuring excellent customer service and high quality products has paid off.” She also thanked all their valued customers whose support and feedback has contributed hugely to their success. Cois na hAbhann is part of the Wexford Garden Trail. For more information log onto www.facebook/wexfordgardentrail or www.visitwexford.ie. Again, you can see his point of view but it is not the view of the stayin’ alive at 1.5 campaign to have our overworked Gardaí chase motorists around with a measuring tape but should a Garda notice such a defined dangerous overtaking manoeuvre, then there would be a clear law defining the offence. This could be enforced in the same way as our current tailgating laws are. In this instance, the 2 second rule (remember the ad ‘only a fool breaks the 2 second rule’) applies. This too is difficult to enforce but becomes apparent in the event of an accident or when witnessed by a member of the Gardai. In conjunction with the campaign, there is a highly visible safety jersey with a very clear '1.5 metres please share the road' message. A gilet was added to this collection late last year with a bib shorts added to the current collection. This kit is in Spin 11's quality garment and as this campaign is a not for profit, is sold at cost price. Feedback has been very positive, with users reporting that they are being given more space on the road in line with overseas experience. I put orders for kit in twice a year, the first one has gone in in mid April, following a few new tweaks to the kit which now includes bike pure logos as it's a cause very close to our heart. Depending on demand though, I can do more orders as necessary. I also now have some outward facing rear window stickers
available too to help spread the 1.5 metre message. I'm presently getting a campaign banner done up that I plan to use at various sportives etc to heighten awareness of the issue. All campaign details and preorder details of the aforementioned kit are available on the campaign website www.safecyclingireland.org I recently lobbied some local politicians and the 1.5 motion was proposed and passed unanimously at a Wexford Borough Council meeting and will now go forward to the Dept. Transport and the RSA for consideration so fingers crossed. I would encourage as many as possible to make it known to politicians, the importance of this 1.5 metre rule to cyclists especially now with the imminent local elections. Also please forward the email linked on Facebook page or website to minister Varadkar and also to sign the online petition. Enniscorthy Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals news… peT approVeD
VET DIARY FOR MAY
with the Moyne Veterinary Clinic in each Slaney News the Moyne Veterinary Clinic deals with various issues relating to animals. This month, Joe kavanagh takes a look at our pets’ diet. The old adage 'you are what you eat' or the more pertinent French saying 'we dig our graves with our teeth!' – gives a more graphic way of reminding us how important our diet is. It is the very same for our animals. There is an ongoing debate on what is the best diet for our animals. In the last 30–40 years the number of proprietory diets has sky rocketed. The differences between each of these different products falls into two main categories, quality and price. We are often told 'you'll pay for what you get' and this is very true for pet food too. A big difference is in quality – the better dog foods have a much better grade of protein, carbohydrate and are supplemented with omega fatty acids, antioxidants, prebiotics but the big difference is the digestibility. As a result you feed them a lot less as almost everything they eat is absorbed up into the system. Better digestion leads to a much healthier animal. It shows in their skin, their coat, their eyes and also surprisingly in their behaviour. If you're eating something that doesn't really sit well with you and are served it up day in day out you can imagine how it's going to affect your whole system including your demeanour.
The society reminds pet owners to arrange spaying/neutering of their pets before unwanted litters of puppies and kittens arrive. At this time of year, the society receives calls daily to collect unwanted young animals who potentially have very long lives ahead.
Unfortunately, we, as all rescues, have limited space. If you are struggling and need help financially or with the transport of your animals to the vet, please contact us and we may offer some assistance to genuine cases. A big thanks from the
society to the people and business owners in Bunclody who very generously donated to our recent table quiz. Thanks also to supporters of our recent trolley draw at Pettits Supervalu Enniscorthy. For queries, help or to volunteer contact 087-7723010 or 086-3075987.

Donohoe’s Pet Corner Donohoe’s Hardware in Lower Templeshannon has opened a new Pet Corner supplying all your dogs’ and cats’ pet care needs. n
Another more recent trend has been to feed dogs a raw food diet. The big advantage of this is that all the enzymes and vitamins are in their original state. This helps the digestion and takes the pressure off the animal's system. It does take more work and organisation and may be marginally more expensive depending on the food it has been on. In the long term a lot of the proponents of this form of diet are very happy with their pets’ general health and wellbeing. This gives you a sample of the different ways to feed your four legged friend. What's your pet digging?

A local contributor looks at life today in Enniscorthy and beyond local ElEctions May 23rd is almost upon us and by now candidates are out knocking on doors, dodging dogs, avoiding opponents and rivals, talking themselves hoarse, being pleasant when they really feel anything but and hoping that they will get at least a courteous reception from the voters. In the Enniscorthy District we, the electorate, have eight seats to fill. When this election is over we will all have an opinion as to who should have been elected. We will complain and we will whinge if the candidates of our choice are not elected. We are indeed entitled to do that provided we have in the first instance gone to the trouble to go out and vote. Therefore come the 23rd there is a strong onus on all of us to cast our vote for the candidates of our choice. And who should that be may I ask ? Well, all the Parties have put up teams for us to evaluate and as I stated in an earlier column we have ways and means, as they say, of doing this. In other words don’t vote for someone in a party unless you agree with the policy of that party rather than simply because he or she is a nice person. The Independents are a different matter because they have aspirations rather than policies. It’s also a little easier for an Independent in a local election because they effectively can be populist rather than have to defend unpopular deci-
sions taken by others. We must then either judge them on their record of representation on our behalf if they are outgoing members, or on our belief in their potential if they are first timers. The decision is ours and remember we only get this chance once every five years. We would be plain stupid not to use it.
nothing to do with it. These people seem to have lost all regard for the esteem that their profession earned over the years. The present crop who attend conferences at least are letting a noble calling down. Students who witnessed this disgraceful behaviour should bring their own megaphones into class and give them a taste of their own medicine.

Euro ElEctions The European elections are being held on the same day as the locals. In Co.Wexford this is almost a non event as we know practically nothing of the candidates. Some of the names are familiar because they are outgoing MEPs or are sitting TDs, the rest are strangers. However, we must again make our views of the policies being followed by the Government and those pursued by the former Government clearly known by our votes. If we agree with what Fine Gael and Labour are currently doing and with what Fianna Fail did with the help of the Greens then we must support their candidates. If we disagree we must find candidates who offer alternate options. The choice, as in the Locals, is ours.
tEachErs From my youth, which was many years ago, I have always looked up to the teaching profession. However, after witnessing the behaviour of teachers at their annual confer-
GEndEr Quotas
View from the Hill ences held over Easter I must say that the now infamous word ‘disgusting’ comes to mind. I couldn’t believe the utter discourtesy shown to the Minister for Education Ruari Quinn who had actually been invited by the
same teachers to address their conference. One clown at the A.S.T.I. Conference in Wexford actually heckled the Minister using a megaphone. Regardless of what disagreement you have with a Minister it is common courtesy to state your views in a strong but proper manner. May I ask what the reaction of these teachers would be if their students behaved in a similar manner in class. The students would be regarded as common louts and worse. Teachers would be going on stress leave in their thousands and of course everybody but the teachers would be blamed for the situation which existed. The example shown by themselves would have
As from 2015 political parties in this country are being forced by law to introduce gender quotas in relation to the selection of candidates for election. Each party must have at least one third female candidates on the ballot paper. In my view this is a travesty of democracy forced on us by the politically correct brigade to ensure, as they see it, proper representation for women. This will lead to a situation where women will be elected just because they are women and no other reason. It will actually do a disservice to genuine candidates who happen to be women but are standing on their merits or on their record as public representatives. Women, any more than men, don’t need gender quotas to participate in public life. In Co. Wexford over the years we have elected many strong and good women to the county council and not because they were women. Think of Nel Ryan way back in the forties, fifties and sixties and then
Avril Doyle, Deirdre Bolger, Helen Corish, Kathleen Codd Nolan, Anna Fenlon, Barbara Anne Murphy and the different women who were elected to the various borough and town councils over the years. These women were in some cases repeatedly elected not because of their gender but because the electorate reckoned that they were, and in some cases are still, doing a good job. So let’s cop ourselves on and put this rubbish aside because if we don’t the next thing we will face is gender quotas for lesbian, gay and even transgender candidates.
and Finally In fairness to the teachers of years gone by they did have a difficult task with some of my generation who weren’t too bright. I remember my old teacher one day posing the philosophical question, “Which comes first the chicken or the egg.’’ The bright spark beside me responds, “Whichever you order first sir.’’ n

A common theme emerged from areas of north Wexford visited by a European election candidate – mammoth local efforts in the face of state indifference. This was the view expressed by Sinn Féin’s Liadh Ní Riada who is a candidate for the South constituency and local election candidate Fionntán Ó Súilleabháin who accompanied her. Her first stop was

Her final engagement was with Ray Cullen , chair of the Talk to Tom centre, Gorey, who outlined the incredible work being done in the area of suicide prevention. Liadh discussed funding options and has promised that she will not only be a voice for the voiceless in Brussels but will take groups there to have their voices heard. n

We had an enormous level of interest and great suggestions. Well done to Eilish, who submitted the winning name.” Desmond O’Flynn, CEO, Waterford Airport, added:

Moyne master class books Wexford Youth Cup final spot by Conor McGrath Good Friday evening saw the Enniscorthy derby between Moyne Rangers and Shamrock Rovers in the Wexford Youth Cup, which took place in a sun drenched O’Sullivan Park. A big crowd was in attendance in anticipation of what would be a proper, hard-fought battle and they were not to be disappointed. In an action packed first half which began slowly, the match soon burst to life after the quarter hour mark when Rangers were twice denied clear penalty claims in a frantic 10 minute spell. The pressure soon told for Rangers however with a goal coming from a Ryan Mahon free kick on the left,
which was turned in by Dale Kirwan in a crowded six yard area. Rangers were now starting to dominate in midfield with playmaker Ryan Mahon pulling the strings in the centre and Glenn Buckley down the left. However, Rovers midfielder Paul Allen burst into the Rangers penalty area and was brought down to hand a lifeline to Rovers. Lee Morrissey’s penalty however was expertly saved by Gary Murphy in the Rangers goal. That penalty miss came back to hurt Shamrocks, a short corner routine between Ryan Mahon and Kamil Kutkiewicz, which resulted in Kamil firing through
a crowd of players and past Rovers keeper Tyler O’Connor to make it 2-0 on the stroke of half-time. Rovers never stopped battling with the combative Paul Allen in centre midfield and target man up front Wojtek Teodorowicz causing problems for the Rangers defence. The match was soon wrapped up
for Rangers after seventy minutes, when the outstanding Ryan Mahon crossed in a free kick from the right to find Sean O’Shea sliding in at the far post to turn the ball in and make it 3-0. A comfortable win for Rangers in the end to see them set up a cup final date with North End United next month.

ford fiesta review by Caroline Kidd 1976 was the year that Concorde began transatlantic flights and the VHS video cassette recorder was unveiled for the first time. It was also the year that Ford launched a new small car called the Fiesta. The Fiesta was born out of the energy crisis of the 1970s and Ford invested one billion dollars to create a small yet practical car. The Fiesta’s modern design and fuel efficient 1.0 and 1.1 litre engines at the time proved popular. Back to 2014. The latest Fiesta is no frump of a supermini and in the metal it has a stylish, compact silhouette. It has Ford’s new corporate face - a trapezoidal grille that gives the Fiesta a distinct look and bears a striking resemblance to the front of an Aston Martin.
It’s easy to get comfortable inside the Fiesta and the white illuminated dials are clear and easy to read. The interior is comfortable but doesn’t feel class leading and the dashboard suffers from too-many-buttons syndrome. The Zetec model has Ford SYNC. This system allows you to use the stereo or make phone calls by voice command and via steering wheel mounted audio controls. It’s a good system but a little bit of time is needed to learn how to use it safely on the move. Any gripes about the interior are swiftly forgotten when you get the Fiesta moving. It is absolutely brilliant to drive. There is loads of feel in the steering and the 1.0 litre 65bhp EcoBoost engine fitted to the test car
has plenty of punch low down in the rev range. It feels lively and engaging. Three cylinder engines can often sound a bit pathetic but this one has a lovely engine note and was much more refined than expected. Around town the Fiesta is compact, nimble and the light steering makes easy work of parking and manoeuvring. On longer motorway journeys it is comfortable and feels well-planted on the road, but the revs do run high at motorway speeds and I saw a dip in economy. Standard equipment on the Fiesta includes daytime running lights, rear spoiler, electric front windows, electric heated mirrors, USB and Aux connectivity, ABS, ESP and hill start assist, 7 airbags and central locking. Zetec and Titanium trim levels

offer more equipment. The current version of the Ford Fiesta is the best yet. Irish motorists are very fond of the Fiesta – it’s one of the top five best-selling cars in Ireland. Concorde now sits in a museum, video recorders have been replaced by DVDs and Sky+ boxes, but the Fiesta is still going strong. Thanks to Ford Ireland for providing the car for review. ENNISCORTHY EYE a column by Joseph doyle
STrawberry feST launChed In ennISCorThy This year’s Strawberry Fest acts were announced in DBar on last Saturday night and this year’s Strawberry Fest will be down the Prom in a big red shed that can hold a capacity of 800 people so the weather won’t spoil the fun. This year ’s Fest was launched by Trish Bird and she had a few surprises lined up – one being the big red shed down the Prom, the other being that the headlining act for Saturday night is none other than Wallis Bird. This is great news for Enniscorthy as Wallis was born in Enniscorthy so it’s a home town gig. Wallis will headline this year ’s Saturday night slot and also on the bill for Saturday night are rock outfit, our very own, Boy
Ian Doyle (The Man Whom)
in the Attic. The other act to support Wallis is the Barley Mob – these guys are a real good warm-up act and very lively. They should go down well. Also on the bill is Ian Doyle (The Man Whom). He is a Wexford based singer-songwriter who is up and coming so that’s the Saturday night of the Fest covered for you. Friday night’s main headliner is Ryan Sheridan, singersongwriter. Support acts will be the Wexford based band who entertained the crowd at the DBar launch – Corner Boy; Enniscorthy based Carole Hollywood and musician Dave Froggy Nolan; then it’s Gorey’s finest – Jimi Cullen and the WexFactor winners. Closing the Fest will be Dublin singer-songwriter Damian Dempsey who will headline Sunday night. One support act will be another local boy, the man with the husky vocals, Clive Barnes. Welcome home Clive. Also on the bill for Sunday night is Wexford musican Johnny Stewart and Voice of Ireland contestant Padraig Byrne. The 2014 Strawberry Fest will take place from the 17th to 29th of June. It looks like a great lineup of main-stage acts. – Joseph doyle

included guest designer and previous winner, Natalie B Coleman showing her S/S collection on the evening, alongside designers such as Martha Lynn, Aisling Ahern, Lisa Ryder, Róisín Linnane, and Rebecca Marsden. A NEW YORK MINUTE by donal Cullen 9am I’ve got to get to Brooklyn I’m the running man 8.30am at Grand Central Got to meet my man. Stan the man in Brooklyn
Out of breath, full of sweat, The subway is the best way. Hey man, get me to Brooklyn Yea man, in a New York minute. 8.40am, I’m on my way The place, the face in Brooklyn It looms large on my mind The cellphone rings Are you there somewhere. Well yes I’m on my way I will meet you at John’s In a New York minute. 8.50am, tick tock, Times Square 8.51am, bang bang, Brooklyn 8.55am, New York newsflash 8.55am, the jive, not alive My man Stan shot dead. If only he could stay We had a chance, to live In a New York minute. Now I’m all alone on a park bench Central Park don’t do much for me I scream and shout, twist and shout Plunder my mind, cry aloud My man Stan left me In a New York minute Brooklyn is cold now Brooklyn a little less cold now I’m in no hurry Stan the man I will be with you soon And we can dance on a cloud In a New York minute.

Opera gold for Wexford
Bunclody exhibition
Wexford Festival Opera received a major international award for Best Re-Discovered work for their 2013 critically acclaimed production of Cristina, regina de Svezia at the International Opera Awards, held last month at a Gala Ceremony in London. In what is considered The Oscars of the Opera World, Wexford Festival Opera further established its position among the world’s most recognised opera institutions, being short-listed with other finalists such as The NY Metropolitan Opera, The Wagner Festival in Bayreuth, and Glyndebourne, to name but a few. Winning the coveted Best Re-discovered Work Award underlines and recognises, by its global peers, what Wexford is fundamentally all about bringing rare operatic gems back to life for the enjoyment and enrichment of Wexford's local, national and international audiences. Accepting the Award on the night, Artistic Director David Agler commented, “It is a distinct honour that Wexford Festival Opera has been recognised for what it is has done faithfully for 63 years in presenting rediscovered operas to the world by winning this award.” Wexford was also nominated in three other categories including, Best Festival, Best Chorus and Best Young Singer – Soprano Helena Dix for her performance in the title role of

Cristina, regina de Svezia; the awards going to Aix-enProvence, Bayreuth and Jamie Barton, respectively. A complete list of award recipients can be f o u n d a t w w w. o p e raawards.co.uk or #operawards General booking is now open for the 2014 Wexford Festival Opera which runs for 12 days from 22nd October - 2nd November. Artistic Director David Agler’s exciting programme will include three main stage operas, three daytime ShortWorks operas, a gala concert, as well as lunchtime recitals, concerts and a film. The Festival will open with Salomé by Antoine Mariotte (1875-1944) a rarely-performed operatic version of Oscar Wilde’s perceptive play about Hérod’s dysfunctional family. First prod u c e d i n Ly o n i n 1 9 0 8 , Mariotte’s Salomé is infused with his impassioned and intense dramatic music, revealing in its subtle harmonies the influence of Debussy.
To balance the drama of the opening production, Don Bucefalo by Antonio Cagnoni (1828-1896) is also on the programme. This is a delightfully good-humoured 19th century comic opera – an opera within an opera - reminiscent of Rossini and Donizetti. Marking the centenary of the Great War, Silent Night by Kevin Puts (b. 1972), will receive its European premiere at We x f o rd t h i s O c t o b e r. Originally commissioned by Minnesota Opera and first performed in 2011 to great critical acclaim, it was awarded the Pulitzer Prize in Music in 2012. With something to appeal to those discovering the festival for the first time or opera lovers who return year-afteryear, Wexford Festival Opera is the event to plan for this autumn. Tickets for evening main stage operas start at €25 each, with tickets for daytime performances starting at just €10. n

The collection of work is as varied, as it is beautiful. Ranging from coffee sets in earthy tones of raw umber and burnt sienna, through to delicate hanging vases in shades of the sea the exhibition certainly has the 'Wow' factor, and all pieces are made to be used as well as admired.
