Enniscorthy is Ireland’s Festival Town – what other town can boast of: The Enniscorthy Street Rhythms Dance Fest which ran in early June and was a huge success (see page 12). The exciting Strawberry Fest is still in progress with plenty to see and do up to 29th June (see page 16). Part of the Strawberry Festival this year is the new literary Focal Festival which takes place from 27th to 29th June (see page 30). In July we have the brilliant Riverside Jump Festival from 18-20th July (see page 13).

summer – the Strawberry Ball was held at the Riverside Park Hotel on Wednesday 18th June beginning with what else but strawberries and champers! In glorious sunshine the stunning Princesses arrived for their interviews with South East Radio’s Tony Kehoe and Judges. Looking fashionable and beautiful they gathered like colourful butterflies on the banks of the Slaney as the trigger happy paparazzi snapped at will. Maxi’s were definitely on trend mainly pastels and neutrals with one very vibrant canary yellow exception making our 10 finalists look very regale and certainly in keeping with the Princess mode. The girls were splendid both in their interviews on radio and on stage later with the encourageable Mr. Liam Sharkey and did themselves

proud. It was most definitely a night for the Gals as the large gathering was welcomed to the Riverside Park Hotel by the newly elected Chair of the Enniscorthy Municipal District Committee Barbara Ann Murphy who officially declared the 47th Strawberry Fest open – making

Teddy Bears Picnic – a GIANT success! Following the hugely successful Easter Egg Hunt held on Easter Saturday in Enniscorthy when 300 children (plus parents, minders, L-R: Aideen Vonno, 8ft Teddy!, Lisa O’Brien Caroline KavanaghBrennan.

etc) descended on the town centre, 24 local retailers and service providers, through the Enniscorthy Business Association, organised a FREE

Teddy Bears Picnic on 14th June which proved to be even more successful with over 300 childen taking part – now that’s a BIg picnic! So big in

fact that the picnic was divided between two separate locations in the town – some of the participants having a Teddy Bears picnic at the Duffry and the remainder having their picnic on Rafter Street. The town was decorated with flags, bunting, balloons, etc which created a fantastic, festive atmosphere. There were lots of colourful cartoon characters in town that day (thanks t o R a t h n u re P a n t o m i m e Society), a Fairy Godmother helping children’s wishes come true, an eight-foot giant bear, lots of people in fancy dress and lots of free goodies for the children including two raffles for prizes of giant teddybears. The 24 participating businesses very generously funded all the cost including the food, drink, treats, tableware etc for the picnic. The Town Council very kindly helped out in various ways which was much appreciated by the organisers. For more information on the Enniscorthy Business Assocation or to find out more about upcoming promotions please phone Frank on 0872403310 or contact Dermot (Smyth’s Arro), Pauline (Toffee & Thyme), Damian (Byrne’s Bookshop). n

Hopes (and dreams) exceeded The cheque presentation for the recent Hope & Dream 10 event was held in The Presentation centre, Enniscorthy, on May 28th. The total sum raised (all expenses were sponsored) was €146,484. This money was equally divided between the Hope Cancer Support Centre, and Console (Wexford). The main organisers of the event were Tom Herlihy and John O'Leary. On behalf of everyone involved, Alan Maher thanked each and every person who had contributed to the success of the day. A team of 200 volunteers was involved in hosting the run/walk. This is the third year that Tom and John have organised the event, and in total they have raised €380,000 for the charities involved. All the sponsors were thanked for their support which meant that, as no expenses had to be paid from the funds raised, every single cent raised by participants was distributed to Hope and Console. On behalf of Hope, Michael Jordan thanked Tom and John for their enormous efforts over the past three years. Hope and Dream has

L-R: Terese Coleman, Eugene Doyle (Hope & Dream Committee), Maura Corcoran at this year’s Hope & Dream run.

become the biggest sporting event in the South-East, with in excess of 2,000 participants this year. What began as a small idea to raise some funds, has grown into a hugely successful event. Not only are the large sums of money donated to the charities vitally important, but also the awareness of the services which these organisation provide, free of charge, to those who need help with a cancer diagnosis, or affected by suicide. On behalf of Console, Denis O'Connor also thanked

the organisers and everyone associated with Hope and Dream 10, and explained how such a significant sum of money can be used to provide additional counselling services. The event was also attended by Paul Kelly, founder and CEO of Console. To m a n d J o h n h a v e decided to pass the running of the event over to Hope and the date for next year’s event will be Sunday April 12th, 2015. The proceeds from Hope and Dream 10, 2015, will also be divided equally with Console. n

More and more, the fragments of your life exist as particles on a disk mounted inside your laptop – disks susceptible to temperature changes, power surges, fire, theft, static, and just plain wear and tear. Hard drives fail. It's a fact of computing life. It's not a matter of whether your computer's disk will stop working; it's a matter of when. So what can you do to safeguard your personal files from certain doom? Well the answer is really simple, backup everything. You should have at least 3 copies of every important file; this includes one copy on your laptop, another copy on an external hard drive or USB key, and another in the cloud. If you want something to automate all this for you so you’ll never have to think or

Wexford Hospital – the good and the bad June has been an eventful month at Wexford general Hospital with the official opening of the new Emergency Department (ED) but also serious criticism of the hospital by HIQA (Health Information & Quality Authority). The new €7.5m Emergency Department at Wexford General Hospital was officially opened by the Minister for Public Expenditure & Reform Mr. Brendan Howlin TD on 6th June. T h e n e w E m e rg e n c y Department (ED) will provide a total of 17 treatment spaces and two resuscitation rooms for emergency patients; an increase of 13 treatment spaces on the four currently available and an increase of one Resuscitation Room. This significant expansion in capacity will lead to improved admission times for patients and will also provide a much enhanced environment for patients and for the staff working there. A new Concourse at WGH, also officially opened by Minister Howlin, will encompass a new Reception/ Admissions / Waiting Area and Coffee Shop for patients and relatives. The existing ED facilities will be refurbished for use as a temporary ward while other refurbishment/improvement work in ongoing in the Hospital. A second part of this overall €20 million project, which encompasses new Maternity Delivery Suites and third Operating Theatre, is scheduled to be commissioned later this year.

Speaking at the official opening, Ms Lily Byrnes (General Manager, Wexford General Hospital) said: “WGH is a busy vibrant hospital, providing a range of acute services to people throughout the county. Last year, on a budget of over €46 million, we saw 49,415 patients through outpatients and 39,785 patients attended the Emergency Department. There were 1,990 births, 8,175 day cases and 17,472 in-patients treated by a team of professional and dedicated staff. This new facility will be a big boost to our ability to sustain these levels of acute services to the population we serve.” Dr Colm Quigley (Clinical Director, Wexford General Hospital) welcomed the development and said: “Today is a major positive in the development of services at Wexford General Hospital. In what are difficult times, it is a good news day for this county. We have, of course, been making progress with existing resources. Current ED patient experience time (PET) statistics show that 93.8% of patients were seen within nine hours and 82.5% within six hours. Trolley waits have reduced at WGH from 1,095 in 2011 to 383 last year. The new ED facility complements all of that hard work and will benefit patients, staff and visitors alike. This very welcome investment in our general hospital here will copper-fasten the role of WGH as a busy, vibrant and fully functioning hospital into the future.” Shortly after the official opening of the new ED, HIQA

reported on shortcomings in safety standards at the hospital. Local Fianna Fáil TD John Browne called for immediate review of all hygiene standards: “The HIQA report stated that there did not appear to be a culture of best practice in hand hygiene, stemming from inadequate governance and a lack of resources. “With a new state-of-theart emergency apartment now fully operational at Wexford General Hospital, the news that hygiene standards is putting patients at risk is deeply disturbing. While washing your hands many seem trivial, in a hospital environment it is of paramount importance that all staff observe maximum hygiene standards. “We need an immediate review of all hygiene practices throughout the hospital… “The HIQA report is a manifestation of how grossly mis€ managed the HSE budget has been over the last 3 years. Minister James Reilly has utterly failed to deliver on his pre-election promise to overhaul the health system. Staff morale is at an all-time low; thousands are leaving the health service each by: year, pay has beenSoldslashed and t h e y a re w o r k................ i n g ................ u n d...... er extremely trying conditions Date:patients on with more and more trollies. ...................................... “Time must be taken for adequate training in general hospital hygiene and management must set an example here € by enforcing standards and ensuing patients are not put at increased risk of infection.” n

Both the Town council offices in Enniscorthy’s Market Square and the old courthouse will be redeveloped under plans approved by Enniscorthy Town council just before its abolition. The historically significant Town Council Offices building is a former market house built in the early part of the 19th century by the Earl of Portsmouth. It has been home to Enniscorthy Town Council for many years and is now the offices of its successor – the Municipal District Council. The redevelopment work will involve a larger public reception area, improved office and meeting spaces, installation of a new lift as well as ancilliary services like a

The Courthouse has been closed since 2006 but new plans will allow it to be refurbished for use by the local authority as office accommodation. The plans include a universally accessible entrance, reception and meeting rooms, open plan office, canteen, storage space, and public/staff WCs. Remembering the late Pat Cody Beauty by Sarah REMEMBERINg THE LATE PAT coDy is the theme of a memorial fund-raising day in honour of the popular Kilkenny man who, at the time of his death, was known throughout county Wexford for his work and commitment to many aspects of community life. Pat died in July of last year having spent almost 40 years living and working in County Wexford and the first anniversary of his passing will be marked by a series of events on July 3rd and the highlight of which will be a fund raising golf classic in Enniscorthy Golf Club. Proceeds from the event will be divided between Wexford Hospice Homecare and Wexford Mental Health Association as nominated by Pat’s family. At the time of his death, Pat Cody was Chairman of Enniscorthy Town Council and Vice Chairman of Wexford County Council, having been elected to both bodies in the 2009 Local Elections. He was a Labour Party representative and was the Party’s first public representative in over 20 years to serve on Enniscorthy Town Council. A senior Nursing Officer at St. Senan’s Hospital in Enniscorthy, Pat was particu-

larly active in promoting higher standards of care for the mentally ill and was singularly instrumental in the introduction of many new nursing initiatives which today form the basis of mental health care across the Southeast. He was also to the fore in securing improved working conditions for both nursing and non-nursing staffs and was at the time of his lamented passing, Secretary of SIPTU’S Health Services in Wexford. A lifelong trade union practitioner Pat was a former Regional President of SIPTU and an active negotiator on behalf of SIPTU members across the region. He was also keenly interested in educational matters and sat on the Boards of Management of Enniscorthy and Adamstown Vocational Colleges. As a member of the Wexford Enterprise Board and a member also of the Regional Authority Pat helped promote County Wexford as an ideal location for educational and industrial developments

and contributed regularly to debates highlighting the many advantages County Wexford had to offer to would-be investors. A small group of Pat’s family and friends have put together a programme of events which will reflect on Pat’s contribution to so many facets of community life in Wexford. The day will start with a gathering of Pat’s family and friends in Enniscorthy Golf Club where

his life’s involvement in so many community activities will be analysed and discussed with a view to putting in place a suitable event by which his name can be remembered annually. After reflecting on Pat’s life-long contribution to so many worthwhile projects and experiences and the hopes he shared with so many individuals, participants will join with other golfers in taking part in the first ever Pat Cody Golf Classic which is expected to attract teams of four from across the entire South East region. The classic will be followed by a prizegiving ceremony and social gathering at which other aspects of Pat’s life will be highlighted, in particular his involvement in music and drama. Thespians and musicians will come together to pay their own tributes to a Kilkenny man who left an indelible mark on the lives of so many people throughout County Wexford. The day promises to be an occasion not to be missed and persons wishing to participate in this Golf Classic are asked to contact Ted Tierney on 0878111835. Fifth hotel added to Talbot Hotel group The four-star Talbot Hotel group announced at the beginning of June the purchase of the only hotel in Ballincollig, cork, the four-star oriel House Hotel. The 78-bedroom hotel was re-developed in 2006 vastly increasing the size of the original 1800s period house and comprises of two bars, a restaurant, conference and banqueting facilities for up to 480 people and a leisure club featuring a 25m swimming pool and spa. Situated on over two acres the hotel has ample parking and grounds. The group Managing Director of ten years, Philip Gavin, made the purchase announcement. The Wexford based hotel group, which comprises of the Talbot Hotel Wexford, The Talbot Hotel Carlow and the Stillorgan Park Hotel in Dublin is owned by the Pettitt family. The group just last month announced the purchase of the Midleton Park Hotel and is cur-

rently investing over €1 million in a refurbishment of the bars, restaurant, function room and bedrooms of the Midleton property. Commenting on the acquisition Managing Director of the Talbot Hotel Group Philip Gavin said, “The Oriel House Hotel is a property which sits completely on par with our other four-star properties across the Talbot Hotel Group. Over 25,000 people live in Ballincollig, this is the only hotel in the town and we are a short 15-minute drive from Cork city centre and Kent train station, which has an hourly service to Dublin. This move makes complete business sense for us and we are looking forward to driving our business further in Cork. We have some great plans in the pipeline to develop the hotel and it services for hotel guests and the people of Ballincollig.” In January 2014 The Oriel

Hotel was announced for sale with an asking price of €6 million on the instruction of Kieran Wallace, Receiver, KPMG. Mr Gavin says the purchase of The Oriel House Hotel by the Talbot Group secures the future of the Hotel and the future of its employees. According to Mr Gavin the Talbot Hotel Group has plans to continue to develop the business, “We have 120 staff at the Oriel House Hotel and these jobs are now secured by this purchase. At the Oriel House Hotel we are planning to continue to maintain the four-star standard and apply the Talbot Hotel Group standards and customer service ethos. We look forward to welcoming guests old and new to the Oriel House Hotel.” The Talbot Hotel Group currently employs over 480 people at their Wexford, Carlow, Dublin and Cork based hotels. n

Brand New Free Tourism App Launched for Wexford A brand new, free tourism i n f o r m a t i o n A p p ‘ Vi s i t Wexford’ has been officially launched. It showcases the tourism offering from the North to South and East to West of the county. It is a real bonus for visitors, not only when they arrive here to holiday but also to research venues and sites before they even arrive. We have done a lot of research on the various types of apps available and we know that this particular type of app is very popular and user friendly”. Peter Wilson, Chairperson of Visit Wexford said, ‘This is another great way for Visit Wexford to support the hundreds of small and medium size tourism related businesses in Wexford and it helps everyone to get their messages directly into the hands of visitors to our

Advice & hints from your locAl hArdwAre teAm sUMMER GaRDENING TIPs Summer – the time for recreation and holidays. But before you leave for your summer holidays, we have a couple of tips on what to do in your midsummer garden: Cutting strong growing hedges To make sure that hedges grow densely and evenly, they should be cut several times a year. After the main breeding period of birds from March to late July, you can start cutting your hedges again. shape your boxwoods To preserve the details of boxwood trees or bushes which were cut in shape, you should now cut back your boxwoods and other evergreens. For perfect shapes you can create templates from cardboard. Pruning lavender When lavender has mostly finished flowering, the shoots should be reduced approximately by one third. This prevents the lavender plants from investing too much energy into seed production. The following year, your lavender will be back with a strong bloom. Remove dead flowers Removing wilted flowers is not only done for aesthetic reasons, but also supports

the formation of new flowering shoots. The plant can concentrate its power to the fresh flowers. Moreover, the dead flowers will not become a breeding ground for pests or fungi. Some summer shrubs like larkspur produce flowers a second time in autumn, when they are cut back after the main flowering. sow fresh seeds on vacated patches In August the gardening year is almost over. Some vegetables, however, can still be sown without any problems at the now-vacated patches. These include Radishes, Lettuce, Rocket, Winter Onions and Spinach. Divide shrubs Should the flowering of your shrubs get weaker or should the blossoms get bald inside, it's time to give your summer shrubs a rejuvenating cure by dividing them. August is a good month for dividing spring and summer flowering shrubs. Dig the shrubs out with a spade or a fork and divide the plants into parts. The single parts should be at least as big as a fist. Remove sick and withered root parts as well as bald spots. Planted at suitable locations the shrubs will return in full blossom. Hanging Baskets/Patio Planters Care Ensure that soil in hanging baskets and patio planters is kept moist. Remove

fading and dead flower heads from plants, this will encourage new flowers. Feed hanging baskets and planters weekly with liquid fertiliser if a slow release fertiliser was not added when planting the basket. Indoor plants Move houseplants outside for some summer sunshine. slugs/snails Protect plants from slugs and snails with slug pellets, course grit or traps. Alternatively try to encourage birds, hedgehogs and frogs to your garden – all prey on slugs and snails. lawns Cut grass weekly, long grass takes more nutrients out of the soil. It is also harder to cut and may leave yellow patches in the lawn. Apply a weed and feed to established lawns. Water in with a hose after a few days if it hasn't rained. Carnival roCk!

Rathnure Pantomime Society perform an extract from ‘Carnival Rock!’ during the recent Enniscorthy Street Rhythms Dance Fest.

Rathnure Panto Society is hitting the boards once again with their 5th brand-new, original, summer musical, "Carnival Rock!". The story takes place in the 1980's and is based around a carnival, which has all the fun of the fair, but also combines a rock show into the mix for its paying customers. Andy, the carnival owner’s son, is a clown, and spends his days performing for the kids with his sidekick Mandy. Zeta, a young Italian girl, whose family also works for the carnival, has a major crush on Andy, and

has a teddy, who she believes to be real, called Mr. Tiddles. Across the hill, looking down on the fair, lives the very poor Harris family. Helena, Melanie and Carrie live in an old shack with their grandparents. One day, Carrie and Melanie sneak into the carnival where Carrie meets and falls in love with Andy. However, her world falls apart when Andy is called up for service in the army and must leave. They keep in contact, but there is evil at hand, which will change all their lives forever!

There are over 60 people involved in this year's production, with some new, young stars coming to the fore. There are over 20 songs, mixing rock with some of the best loved musical numbers. This is a show not to be missed!! This year's musical will run on selected dates from 30th June-9th July in Rathnure Hall at 8pm nightly, with the exception of Saturday 5th, which is at 6.30pm. The Colourful Street Rhythms Dance Fest

Once again the Street Rhythms Dance Festival burst on to our pavements in a rainbow of colour that helped clear the grey skies over Enniscorthy and brought a little summer shimmer to our streets. F ro m t h e w o n d e r f u l Opening Parade to fanciful Fairytales at the Castle to aesthetic performances at Market Square where dancers preened

and pranced like beautiful peacocks and happy Disney Characters celebrated birthdays – it was a fun weekend all the way. Despite the changeable and sometimes inclement weather the show definitely went on and brought a little glamour and razzmatazz to the centre of town. Businesses and restaurants were certainly experiencing ’a bit of a buzz’

as they put it and the town had a festival ambience and an attractive holiday atmosphere about it. Sunday afternoon at Market Square was a highlight for me with the amazing antics of comedy duo Babcock and Bobbins and the fantastic Indian Dance Group – Sandstorm. Well done to all the organisers and to the sponsors –

the now decommissioned Town Council and Enniscorthy Credit Union. In its 7th year this Festival really kicks off the summer season at Enniscorthy whatever the weather. n

Orchard Recording in Enniscorthy in partnership with the Arts Department of Wexford County Council and the Arts Council are delighted to announce that Bobby Tierney and Edgar Bird are the two successful candidates to receive this year’s ‘Recording Development Bursaries’. This award is part of the Room to Record music technology programme initiated by Wexford County Council in 2012 to enhance the opportunities available to Wexford’s emerging musical talent. The Development Bursaries are into their 2nd year of running and have proved to be very successful again this year. Paul Dowling, Orchard Recording, “We are delighted with the response we received from musicians in the Wexford area to this opportunity. We had an even larger number of applications this year, which shows us that the Wexford music scene is rich with upand-coming talent, and is growing every year. The Recording Development Bursary has been devised to address the need for a greater understanding of professional recording practices/ways of working for emerging bands/artists/singersongwriters. If you are prepar-

Bursary winners ing to record an album, embarking on your first recording experience or looking to increase your skill set within a recording studio environment, these are the areas we will be looking at”. Last year’s two successful bursary winners were “Corner Boy” from Killinick in Wexford, and Alice Lynskey from Ferns. Michael D’Arcy, lead singer with Corner Boy: “We believe

that the overall process has helped us garner a greater understanding of the production, recording, editing and writing process.” Alice Lynskey: “I can honestly say that these two days were the most musically educational and inspiring days I have ever had.” A spokesperson for Wexford County County Council said “This is an exciting opportunity

for any musician or band to move from recording ‘in the bedroom / garage’ to a professional studio with the expert support, guidance and production that Orchard Recording provide. The Arts Department is proud to support these bursaries for a second year.” The R e c o rd i n g Development Bursaries will run in the Orchard Recording Studio, Enniscorthy, over the summer. Blackstairs Blues… ThE rEvElaTor orChEsTra Music - 26 June Weird, cool, majestic, dark, brooding, intense. Their performances can lift you from the space you inhabit to a crimson throbbing place, a place with a soundtrack of primal beats and web-like words, Peter Murphy wearing black feathered wings and eyeliner, climbing across legs, tables and glasses, presenting us with his id while the ego watches in terror, as Acko beats a wailing guitar into submission, and Paula Cox screams in an ethereal way, and takes you to the very core of yourself while your neck tingles.

MaE Trio - Music - 19 July Melbourne-based band of three young musicians fast making a name for themselves with contemporary folk songs that are surprisingly mature and insightful for musicians aged between 19 and 22. Maggie Rigby (banjo, ukulele, guitar, marimba and vocals) Elsie Rigby (fiddle, ukulele and vocals) and Anita Hillman (cello, bass and vocals) started playing music together late 2011. All three members of the trio write their own songs and these are tastefully arranged to suit the group’s diverse instrumental talents and love of three part vocal harmony.

Carlsberg Pub Talent is a great event where locals in each pub put on a 30 minute show trying to win the coveted Pub Talent Trophy! The heats have been running over recent days and on 26th June the final takes place in The Riverside Park Hotel with prizes sponsored by Diageo and presented that evening. It’s free in, it starts at 8pm and the entertainment will be superb. If you can’t make it along to the Riverside on the 26th please note that the winning acts will perform on the Market Square Stage on Sat 28 June at 7.30pm. The 2014 Strawberry Grower Of The Year is Paddy Murphy, Boro Valley Fruit Farms. Congratulations.

A Culinary Delight – This competition involves a cook-off between the six homecook finalists on Tuesday 24th June at the Riverside Park Hotel, and separately six commercial chefs who want to please the Strawberry Queen with their creative cuisine skills. The cooks will be interviewed whilst preparing their entry so that you, the audience, get “a taste” of what they are making (whilst the Queen is busy sampling their cooking!) and then the six entries will be judged by two Award Winning Chefs, Phelim Byrne and Paolo Tullio. Liz Wall, President ICA, will also help to judge the Competition. Homecooks have an hour to demonstrate their skill in using Co. Wexford strawberries and can have an assistant. Homecooks start at 7pm. During a break, whilst we set up for the Chefs’ Competition, the judges and Queen will determine the winner and the Winner and all Finalists will receive their awards. After the break, the six Chefs will cook-off against the winner from 2013… Richie Trappe from Greenacres, Wexford … creating a two-course menu both of which use the Co. Wexford strawberry, hoping to make a menu that the Strawberry Queen will wish to serve her royal guests. The twist … the chefs are given a basket of mystery ingredients and if they can use some, they gain extra points! A night of great taste… a royal treat!

Midsummer Madness at Presentation Enniscorthy Drama Group presented the first of it’s summer plays - the exhaustingly hilarious comedy tom, dick & Harry to full houses at The Presentation Centre and blew audiences away with the standard and professionalism of their performances. Directed by Corkman, Colum Coomey, the play is a farcical tale about 3 well meaning and extremely well cast siblings. Tom and his wife are about to adopt a baby, while his misguided brothers are anxious to help make a good impression on the woman from the Adoption Agency who has arrived to interview the prospective parents. Unfortunately middle brother, slick Dick, has stashed boxes of smuggled brandy and 400,000 cigarettes in his brother’s house and younger brother, the hapless Harry, is in possession of a cadaver he has taken illegally from a medical school. Throw in two illegal immigrants, a less than sharp Copper and a gun-waving Russian gangster and all hell breaks loose in the most comical way. Ronan P Byrne who plays Tom, the lead, is Basil Fawlty to perfection. He runs, jumps, skips, hops and bounds around the stage banging his head off walls and thumping the furniture with bubbles of perspiration on his forehead and

rivulets racing down his back as things become more and more outrageous. Ronan puts so much energy, enthusiasm, passion and so much of himself into this part. He is a true professional and has so much acting ability that we are blessed to have him at our disposal in Enniscorthy. Dick, a smart talking, always on the make, Dell Boy type, twinkle-eyed rogue, played by the very talented Jamie Murphy whose timing and delivery are impeccable and Harry, a harmless, well meaning, lovable type character – a cross between Rodney and Frank Spenser, played expertly by Tim Connaughton whose facial expressions alone could have you in stitches – put them together in a Fawlty Towers meets Only Fools and Horses farce and you can understand why our audiences went home with smiles on their faces. The three guys are so well cast, work so well together and are so at ease on stage that they carry the show even though there were some excellent supporting roles in Linda, the long suffering wife and sister-in-law, played with poise by Fiona Byrne, the officious Mrs. Potter from the Adoption Agency played by the experienced Michelle Whelan, Andreas the trumpet-playing Albanian grandfather and Katrina, his beautiful granddaughter, who did a wonder-

ful job on the Albanian language (as if I knew), Gearoid McCauley playing the somewhat dim-witted Constable Downs with conviction and Boris, the weapon wielding Russian gangster, played with swagger by Director Colum Coomey – top class acting from each and every one extracting wonderful responses from the punters who caught every line and every innuendo – the ultimate tribute to those on stage. The reception with which the play was received is indicative of the fact that people love to laugh and good old-fashioned belly laughs seem to go down best of all as the show finished each night to thunderous applause as audiences went

out into the Enniscorthy night ‘tired but happy’. Well done Enniscorthy Drama! After only 12 months in existence I think that they have established themselves as a group of talented thespians very much here for the long haul. Could I extend our most sincere thanks to all members of the backstage crew, Front of House, ushers, those who sold raffle tickets and programmes and those who made tea and sold tickets. A special word of thanks to Town Clerk David Minogue and the staff of The Presentation Centre for the beautiful performing space and all their help and assistance and to all those who took

an ad in our programme, donated raffle prizes or sponsored us in any way. Your help is greatly appreciated. And finally to you the audience – thank you all for your continued support for Enniscorthy Drama. Not ones to rest on their laurels – the group have hit the ground running and are staging the second of their summer

plays – the very ambitious production Glengarry, Glen Ross in August at The Presentation Centre directed by Jamie Murphy. So watch this space! We are always seeking new performers and new members so go on, don’t be shy, come along and join us – it’s onward and upward for Enniscorthy Drama Group. – Maria nolan Pro

McEvoy doing her Stuff in Wales Wexford-based performer Eleanor McEvoy has been added to the bill for this year’s prestigious Aberjazz Jazz n Blues Festival in Fishguard in Wales. The Festival takes place from August 21 to 25, and McEvoy will perform in Peppers at the West Wales Arts Centre on August 23. The show starts at 7pm, and tickets are £10, available online from www.aberjazz.com. The international line-up for Aberjazz also includes, Jacqui Dankworth, daughter of the Johnny Dankworth-Cleo Lane jazz dynasty, acclaimed New Orleans-style blues pianist Dale Storr, The Tango Jazz Quartet, and the Nik Turner Band

(led by the former sax player from Hawkwind). The Aberjazz invitation comes at a busy time for McEvoy. In May she released her latest album stuff on the Moscodisc label following a successful six-week tour of Australia. The launch of the album was celebrated on May 21 with Eleanor performing at a special show at The Jazz Cafe in London. stuff includes her introspective reading of Chuck Berry’s ‘Memphis Tennessee’, and the new track ‘Milord’, which McEvoy performs as a tribute to singer Edith Piaf and writer Georges Moustaki. All told, stuff is an 11-track miscellany, the result of a purposeful mission by the Wexford-based

singer to find and release the “stuff’” the fans wanted but couldn’t find. Eleanor says, ”I’m already looking forward to introducing songs from across my repertoire, including stuff, at what promises to be a very exciting festival. This will be my first performance in West Wales, and it’s always exciting to play for a new audience in a beautiful venue like Peppers.” This will be the 11th Fishguard Jazz and Blues Festival, and its proximity to Wexford, thanks to Stena Line’s Rosslare-Fishguard ferry link, is making it an increasingly popular draw for Irish music fans. ‘Pylon’ on the pressure The sun shone brightly on the streets of Dublin in April as crowds of up to ten thousand strong came out in force to voice their concerns and objections to the Government's National Renewable Energy policies. The Government's renewable energy strategy centres almost entirely around wind and the present policies will allow thousands of kilometres of pylons, numerous substations and over 2,500 wind turbines to blight the entire country. Many of the areas targeted for these developments are in our country's most pristine, scenic and historic areas; areas that are considered our nation's treasures. Here in Co. Wexford 400K voltage pylons under the Gridlink project of Grid25 plan are set to be erected across scenic areas from north Wexford extending through to New Ross and down to Great Island. In addition, more plans are underway to introduce EirGrid's Gate3 plans, which will include more industrial scale wind turbines to various locations all over the county. Several offshore Foreshore Licences to investigate the suitability of sites for offshore wind farms are also being looked at in the following areas of Co. Wexford: Blackwater, Ballyteige

Bay, Glassgorman Banks, Lucifer Bank & Long Bank and also a small area off the Saltee Islands. The protest march, organised initially by anti-wind groups in the Midlands, gathered crowds from all four provinces of Ireland. As the time has gone on, the people involved have learned that the proposed plans for turbines and pylons are intrinsically linked and the entire energy policy needs to be revaluated as it is fundamentally flawed. The people of rural Ireland unanimously stood united to voice concerns about these flawed energy policies which are based almost entirely on wind energy generation. Several buses travelled from Co. Wexford, while many others travelled by train and car. Those who travelled represented many more family members and neighbours who couldn't make the journey. People from all parts of north and south Co. Wexford stood arm in arm with other counties as far away as Cork, Mayo, Galway, Roscommon, Donegal and Tyrone, to name but a few. S i n e a d F i n n f ro m Rathgarogue stated: "It is up to us individually to learn about the risks of these projects, get educated and get involved", the mother of two young sons

continued: "It would be negligent of me as a mother not to speak out for my children's future. Their home and the school they will attend is right in the middle of the path of one of the planned routes. The health risks alone are frightening to contemplate. Sadly, the government is being negligent to us as citizens of Ireland by ignoring the obvious negatives." The march promoted a family-friendly protest as parents were encouraged to bring their children and take advantage of the Easter holidays. The organisers achieved that as attendees reported an almost carnivallike feel to the day – Tipperary TD Mattie McGrath waltzed with a woman from the crowd to the tune of 'Slievenamon'! But the upbeat mood didn't take from the strong message the people wanted to convey. Schoolchildren sang songs and chanted anti-pylon messages as they walked purposefully down O'Connell Street towards the Dáil. The atmosphere was electric and the energy palpable. Mrs Finn continued: "It was so encouraging to see so many take to the streets to raise their objections. These projects are set to destroy the lives of many Wexford people but after today, the government will see that the people of Wexford and

A recent statement from Eirgrid: EirGrid has welcomed the statement by the Independent Expert Panel appointed by the Minister for Communications, Energy and Natural Resources, Mr. Pat Rabbitte, TD, that it has finalised the Terms of Reference for route-specific studies / reports in relation to fully undergrounded and overhead options for the Grid West and Grid Link projects. EirGrid will fully cooperate with the Independent Expert Panel in its work. In addition, EirGrid welcomes the announcement that the Panel will provide an opinion to the Minister on the compatibilities of the methodologies to be used on the Grid West and Grid Link projects with work already done on the North South Transmission Project. To view Terms of Reference see: http://www.dcenr.gov.ie/Press +Releases/2014/Statement+ by+the+Independent+Expert +Panel+considering+the+Eir Grid+Grid+West+and+Grid+ Link+projects.htm

beyond are gaining an awareness about these policies and they are not backed up by any logic or benefit for the Irish people. As the time goes on we are starting to see more and more people join the fight as they discover how detrimental these projects will be to our communities and our daily lives. The time to get involved is now!" The protest escalated at the gates of Leinster House as organised speakers from anti-pylon, anti-substation, and anti-wind farm groups took to the stage to speak about alternatives to the proposed plans and the obvious need for a total rethink of the entire energy policies. The people waved their banners enthusiastically and cheered in unison – noticably absent were Taoiseach Enda Kenny and

Minister Pat Rabbitte but no doubt the Minister for Energy and Natural Resources would have heard the chant 'Run Rabbitte Run!' from within the safety of his government's chambers. Many politicians took to the streets to show their solidarity – John Brown TD, Mick Walllace and Senator Jim Walsh were amongst the protesters. Mrs. Finn added: "The recent local elections were an opportunity for people to show that they're seeking real change. If the change can begin at local level, it sends a clear message to the Dáil that change will, in turn, be demanded at a national level. Our local county councillors are duty-bound to educate themselves and get a true understanding of the ENTIRE energy policy picture, how it

will affect the Wexford people and how they can play a part in genuinely contributing to changing it in a positive way. When the Independent Expert Panel was appointed by the Minister, many people seem to be under the false impression that this issue has gone away or its threat reduced in some way. People must realise that the threat of these projects is very severe and still very real. Those people who took to the streets were sending a very clear message to the government that this is just the start of the fight. This is becoming the people's movement – Power to the people!" – Sinead Finn, Campaigner with Wexford EirGrid Action Group & New Ross Against EirGrid Pylons

The Wexford Local Enterprise Office will have a total fund of €50,000 to invest in the three winning businesses, according to criteria including the prospects and investment needs of each business. The overall winner of County W e x f o r d ’ s B e s t Yo u n g Entrepreneur can receive an investment of up to €25,000. There will be a total fund of €100,000 available for investment in the three winning businesses at the national finals, with the overall winner eligible for an investment of up to €50,000. Investment decisions will be made depending on business prospects and investment needs of the winning businesses. There have been expressions of interest from television production companies on the possibility of covering the later stages of the competition in a reality TV format. Beet Ireland has, according to Sinn Féin, already identified New Ross as one of a number of locations perfect for the construction of a sugar beet processing plant which would be used to process sugar and ethanol. The Irish Sugar Beet Bio-Refinery Group has said that such a factory would cost €350 million, would create five thousand jobs and be profitable within the first year.

Sinn Féin has identified several initiatives that could bring major employment to County Wexford. They include:

INVEST IN ROSSLARE EuROPORT Rosslare Europort is a strategic asset from a national perspective, supporting exports and tourism. According to Sinn Féin: “An Irish Ports Association report revealed that ferry based tourism through Rosslare Europort in 2004 was worth €550 million to the Irish economy and supported over 5,000 jobs. Sinn Féin believes that this Port needs to be protected and developed to meet the demands of the 21st century. We have called for the deepening of one of the berths in the harbour to 9 metres. This was costed by the Department of Finance in our party's Jobs Plan of 2013. The deepening of the port would allow larger freight to use Rosslare and increase the already high levels of freight traffic coming through. To further aid this, a rail cargo depot could be built at the harbour which would facilitate the logistics business and help divert heavy traffic from the public road network. It could in turn lead to the reopening of the Rosslare to Waterford Rail line. All this would create employment. Rosslare Europort should be developed as a gateway for tourism into the south east. The promotion of County Wexford and the wider south east as a tourist destination, particularly for the British and continental European market would create further employment, provide vital reinvigoration for the struggling South Wexford retail industry and further make use of a reopened Rosslare to Waterford Rail line.” NEw 1916 REVOLuTIONARy QuARTER IN ENNISCORTHy During the1916 Rising, Enniscorthy was one of the few towns outside of the capital to go out and fight. Republican forces occupied the town and nearby areas for a week and were the last group to surrender to the British. Currently Sinn Féin is seeking to set up a revolutionary quarter around Moore Street in Dublin. In this county, understanding that many people are unaware of what happened in Enniscorthy during this period, Sinn Féin wishes to create a similar project, which will boost tourism, education and serve as a fitting monument to the events which forged our state ahead of the centenary in two years. As well as creating direct employment, the project would also bring new revenue into the town of Enniscorthy, boosting existing businesses and helping new ones develop. ROLL OuT OF SuPERFAST BROADBAND Sinn Féin has demanded that the government invest €2.5 billion into the development of next generation superfast broadband right across this state. County Wexford has one of the highest rates of unemployment in the state while having one of the best trained labour pools. With the inclusion of superfast broadband, Sinn Féin believes our towns could become new tech hubs.

Jason Dunne of John A. Sinnott & Co. Solicitors with Miriam O'Callaghan at the Irish Law Awards 2012, where they were shortlised for Irish Law Firm of the Year.

CONVERT OLD wExFORD GAOL INTO A MuSEuM Cllr Anthony Kelly has been campaigning for the provision of funding to convert the old Wexford Gaol into a museum. Wexford County Council recently turned down his plan to carry out a feasibility study on the project but the Sinn Féin team on the new look County Council will continue to seek funding to be made available. Its opening as a museum would have huge educational benefits and boost tourism in the town. It would also create employment, both direct and indirect. n

VET DIARY FOR JULY

with the Moyne Veterinary Clinic This month, Joe Kavanagh bids farewell to small animal vet, Sally Ryan, who is moving to Cornwall to pursue her dream job of working full-time as a homeopathic vet. Nothing ever stays the same. There is always flux and change in Nature; Spring brings a burst of growth, Summer sees everywhere blossom and mature, Autumn brings a shedding, colour aplenty and Winter brings the trees back to a dormant, quiet, resting period. So too change has come to our practice. Our long-time and highly regarded small animal vet, Sally Ryan, is moving further afield to Cornwall to pursue a dream job of working full-time as a homeopathic vet. Sally has brought her own unique brand to veterinary medicine. In a quiet, gentle fashion, blending ageless wisdom with practical common sense she has helped a generation of pets and their owners. In a quiet, unobtrusive way she has stamped her mark on our practice. Her big heart and gentle disposition have comforted many of our clients, reassured them when worried and anxious, helping them and their pets on every level. A small animal vet has to have many skill sets: a good range of clinical knowledge, good surgical technique, a friendly disposition, an ability to work under pressure and most of all a big heart. Sally has all of these qualities and much more too. She has brought a quiet, assured wisdom to her work that in turn gives people around her, her work colleagues and clients, a confidence that the best outcome will arrive if it's possible. As she hands over the reins she will leave her legacy here. The young vets coming in have a short time under her tutelage but her stamp is ingrained in the work ethic of the veterinary practice here. We wish her well in her new endeavours and thank her for all the magic she has brought to our lives.

A local contributor looks at life today in Enniscorthy and beyond nEw CO. COunCil The new Wexford County Council of 34 members has just met for the first time. The newly elected members have divided up the spoils of chairmanships, committee memberships, delegates to outside bodies etc. This divvy up is always very important because it effectively decides as to who will control the council for the next five years. It’s also of course essential for the individual members because of the lucrative expenses which are paid, on top of the councillors’ allowance of €500 per week, to the holders of each position. This time around Fianna Fail, Fine Gael and the remnants of the Labour Party (two members) have shared the spoils while throwing a few crumbs from the table to a couple of former Fianna Fail members who are now independents. The significant thing to note here is the deliberate exclusion of the newly elected Sinn Fein members from all positions within the council. This is despite the fact that a considerable number of people in the county voted for Sinn Fein candidates giving that party a genuine mandate to participate in local government. So much for recognition of the will of the people. The ridiculous thing about all this is that Fianna Fail, Fine Gael and the remnants of Labour would, from a political point of view,

have been well advised to include Sinn Fein in the decision making process so as to force that party to either put up or shut up when unpopular decisions have to be taken. Instead Sinn Fein are now in the happy position that all they need do over the next five years is to oppose everything, make themselves look good, reap the benefit at the 2016 general election and sweep the boards at the next local elections. All I can say is that the so called main parties must have no backroom political advisors of the calibre of the old hands that those of us of a certain age would remember. If they had they would be looking further than simply deciding who gets what today. AgE Of COunCillOrs I must say that I was a little bit amused at the recent comments of some of our new councillors who, although in their late thirties, are describing themselves as new young public representatives. Cop yourselves on lads and study the history of Wexford’s local authorities. You may be new but you are not that young. Over the years many people have been elected in their twenties. Back in the 70’s John Browne was about 25, Rory Dunne about 28, Jim Walshe of New Ross 25, Peter Roche in Wexford 28 and Ivan Yates in Enniscorthy at 19 to the Urban

is farfetched just look at Britain where the county system has been almost completely wiped out to be replaced with regional authorities. And haven’t they already started this process with the amalgamation of the V.E.C.’s and replaced them with Education Boards representing large regional areas.

View from the Hill Council and 24 to the County Council. Now lads that’s young. The average lifetime of a male is 3 score and ten i.e. 70 years so rather than being young these new councillors in their late thirties are technically middle aged. C.E.O.’s In the recent reorganisation of local government something which has slipped through without comment (other than in this column over a year ago) is the change of title for the former position of county manager. The holders of that office from here on out will be Chief Executive Officers. This is a matter of concern for those of us who for years have regarded the county unit, whether in local or

national government, sport or any other context as sacrosanct. The county unit has been the basis for many things for hundreds of years in this country and should remain so. The elimination of the position of county manager and its replacement by that of chief executive officer is the beginning of a process which will see the further amalgamation of local government units. This will begin with the smaller counties being submerged into single units with a chief executive officer in charge and eventually counties such as Wexford will be thrown in with a south eastern region authority where we will lose our autonomy as a county. If you think this

BAnking Enquiry The so called banking enquiry has collapsed into total farce with the resignation of Stephen Donnelly T.D. on the grounds that the government is trying to pack the committee to get a political rather than a true outcome which will tell us what really happened. When we see what has occurred over the last few weeks in relation to this committee it’s hard to disagree with Donnelly. Furthermore the Irish Independent reports that it will be Easter 2015 by the time the committee gets around to its public enquiry stage. If this is all true well then the entire thing is a political farce which will cost millions (extra expenses to the members appointed to it and the usual gravy train legal eagles) and in fact should be scrapped altogether. Anyway don’t we all know what happened and it’s this. The Irish banks borrowed billions from German banks and in turn loaned it out to people who had no hope of paying it back when the reces-

sion hit. Then the German government, through the Troika, told the Irish government that our bad boy banks had better pay those billions back to the German banks so as not to create a problem in Germany. The Irish government (Cowen and Lenihan), instead of telling Merkel to go to hell, got down on bended knee, borrowed billions from the Troika, gave the billions to the Irish banks to pay back the German banks so as to avoid a problem in Germany so everyone would be happy. Oh I nearly forgot! The Irish government decided that we the Irish people would pay back all these billions to the Troika and they didn’t even bother to ask us. Sure what’s a decade of austerity to ensure that our reputation abroad remains intact and Cowen’s successor Enda can continue to swagger around Europe with his good friend Merkel. Who needs a banking enquiry. illusiOn shAttErEd Was sitting at home the other day reading the paper when I overheard a conversation between the Missus and our eldest daughter. Mam, she says, ‘My new boyfriend is really great, in fact he’s just like Daddy.’ Must say I felt really proud. Then the Missus says, ‘What do you want from me, sympathy.’ Ouch. n

Extracts from Address of James White, Irish Pilgrimage Trust National Chairman, at 40 years Wexford celebrations… The HCPT started in England in 1954. A small group of young people with special needs set out for Lourdes, led by a young doctor, Michael Strode. From this unobtrusive beginning The Pilgrimage Trust and subsequently The Irish Pilgrimage Trust and other associated groups have grown over the past 60 years… Expansion continued in England and in 1971 the first Irish group joined The Pilgrimage Trust and the first group travelled in April 1972 on pilgrimage to Lourdes. In 1974 the first group from the South East travelled to Lourdes, Group 69 from Wexford. In that group there are some who are still travel-

ling today, Maureen & Jimmy Rossiter and Fr. Hugh O'Byrne. The key difference with our pilgrimage is that the overall number is broken down into 46 groups that are made up of Group Leader, Chaplain, Nurse, Guests and carers. Each group is supported by a doctor… a great bond forms between the members during the week, all working, playing and praying together for the week in a fun filled atmosphere. Everybody, no matter what their condition is, stays in a hotel. Whilst there are many activities scheduled for the week it is about spending time with each other and going at the pace of the slowest. The week is very rich in love, respect, companionship in the company of each other, Bernadette and Mary. It is about recognising each other’s abilities.

This year in the South East: 10 groups travelled to Lourdes at Easter numbering 250 people which included 100 guests. 45 pilgrims to a house we share with HCPT in Lourdes in June. Two "friendship" weeks held in St. Helen's in our respite house. Altogether in excess of 340 people will have experienced the trust this year in the South East. Also three years ago we opened Cois Cuain a purpose built holiday home in St. Helen's which accommodates groups and families. Since it opened circa 1,500 people would have made use of its facilities. Over 40 years a lot done but in the immortal words ‘more to do’.” To enquire about being a volunteer or guest please check: www.irishpilgrimagetrust.com or call HQ 091-796622 or James White on 086-8318558. n

Enniscorthy Chess… Successes keep rolling in for Enniscorthy Chess Club. Twelve club members made the trip in May to Co. Clare to take part in the Ennis Chess Congress. One club member, Robbie Kildea chose to take on the challenge of the open category and managed a very respectable three draws from six games, a superb result given that many of his opponents out rated him by hundreds of points! Dovydas Pocevicius and Joshua Redmond played the U1400 grouping and fought it out on the top board for the event title. Dovydas was to prevail and took the Ennis Chess Congress title with a sensational six wins from six games! Mercedes Plaza Reino was awarded a prize for the best performance over rating achieved by anyone in the grouping, while Will Sydney took home the prize

for the under 700 rating category. Four club members then made the short trip from Ennis to Limerick to represent their school, Gaelscoil Inis Córthaidh, at the Check Mate National Primary Schools Finals where Gaelscoil Inis Córthaidh were declared the Check Mate National Primary School Champions!! For Robbie, Dean and Dylan this event was the last time they would represent their primary school as they now move on to secondary school having won both the Gaelscoils title and the Primary Schools title. A small contingent headed to the Drogheda congress and once again featured in the prize giving, Agustin Plaza Reino finished in joint third place in the under 1100 category whilst his sister Mercedes received a grading prize. n

Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV

motor trade ready for 142 We ’ r e a l m o s t h a l f w a y through the year now and from the 1st July we will be entering the 142 registration period. There’s a lot of optimism out there for the second half of the year after a good start to 2014. In Wexford alone, new cars sales were up nearly 44% on 2013 up to the end of May. We’re still a good way off the 180,000+ new cars that were sold nationally at the height of the boom but it would be good to see new car sales return to a healthy, sustainable level. It replenishes the

used car market which has been suffering from a severe shortage of good quality used cars over the last few years. It’s also good for jobs and in the last few months I’ve seen several adverts from Wexford car dealers looking for new staff from valeters to sales people. Local dealers will no doubt be hoping for a busy July on the forecourts with the new 142 registration. Most of the manufacturers have cooked up some 142 deals to tempt new buyers so there are good deals to be had if you are

thinking of buying. Another thing that’s been decimated over the last few years has been the sales of huge, fuel guzzling SUVs. Their popularity went off the boil after the changes to the tax system in 2008 that taxed cars based on CO2 emissions. And during a time of austerity it’s fair to say that an SUV driver is not going to be the most popular on the road. Some of the big carmakers have attempted to rectify the image with more eco-friendly engines or by using hybrid

or electric power. One of these, the Mitsubishi Outlander PhEv, has just arrived here. It’s what they call a plug-in hybrid SUV and it has a petrol engine and electric motor. In pure electric mode it has a range of 52km but the petrol engine will act as a generator once the power drops below a pre-determined level so you will never be stuck. The road tax is just €170 per year and the official economy figure is 149mpg!! The Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV is priced from €41,950. n

peugeot 308 review by Caroline Kidd This month I got a chance to take a closer look at the new Peugeot 308. It was voted European Car of the year earlier this year and it’s a car that really pushes the game forward for Peugeot in the highly competitive family hatchback segment where the volkswagen Golf and Ford Focus dominate. It’s easily one of the best looking cars in its class. It’s lower than the car it replaces and has shorter front and rear overhangs that lend the 308 a sleek and sporty profile. It’s also got one of the best interiors I’ve seen in a while in a car in this class. It’s something that I’ve found that Peugeot do very well as the moment in their cars and the 308 is no different. The cabin is finished in a tasteful combination of matt black, gloss black and brushed metal effect trim. A 9.7” touchscreen controls temperature, fan settings, telephone, multimedia and vehicle settings. It removes the need for a lot of buttons on the dash on all but entry

level models. What’s left is a classy, minimalist design. These touchscreens can be controversial but I got used to the one in the 308 very quickly. It’s certainly something that will please the smartphone generation. The space was good inside the car and the boot should be able to cope well with daily family life. There is 470 litres of it and it’s got a wide opening and a low flat loading sill. The test car was fitted with a 1.6 diesel engine producing 115bhp. It’s very smooth, quiet and refined and has all the power you need in a car of this size. The

official economy figure is over 74mpg and this engine also has fuel saving start stop technology fitted as standard. I didn’t get quite the driving thrills I was hoping for from the 308 but it does seem to have been more set up for comfort which is not a bad thing. It’s a fine comfortable cruiser but I would have liked a bit more feeling in the steering. Equipment on my test car was very good. It was middle of the road Active trim and it has everything on it you could ever want including programmable cruise control, electric windows, fog lamps, alloys, automatic lights and

wipers, rear parking sensors, hill start assist, driver’s lumbar support and automatic dual zone air conditioning. All things considered it’s really hard not to like this Peugeot. Something like a Ford Focus in my opinion would still have the edge over it in terms of driver engagement but there is not much out there in the family hatchback segment that would be a match for the 308 in style, quality of interior and engine power and refinement, and all with a price tag of just over €24,000. Thanks to Peugeot Ireland for providing the car for review. Model tested: Peugeot 308 1.6 eHDi Active Price: €24,390 (Range starts at €18,990) Engine: 1.6 litre four cylinder turbo diesel Power: 115bhp 0-100km/h: 10.2 seconds Economy: 74.3mpg (3.8/100km) CO2 emissions: 98g/km Tax band: A2 (€180 per year). n

Musical Garden

a column by Joseph Doyle

MusIC box Doyles Pub, The Duffry, is one of the most talented pubs in Enniscorthy and indeed was the first ever winner of the Strawberry Festival Pub Talent competition in 1968. This year the talent was as good as ever and the two judges, Denis Gordan and Leanne Hore, seemed to be impressed. Joe Doyle did MC for the show and introduced the first act – singer and guitarist Richie Frayne who sang "Hard Times" accompanying himself on guitar. Next up was Paddy Gordon who has been participating in the Pub Talent since 1968 and despite ill health Paddy’s voice was as good as ever as he sang “Galway Bay”. Marie Gordon used her beautiful traditional voice on “Raglan Road”. Sharon Rooney showed her great vocals on “Other Side of the World” by KT Tunstall. Matthew Hyland sang "Sam Stone" by the legendary American country composer John Prine and the Bull Sullivan went more upbeat with a great rendition of Neil Diamond’s "I Am Myself". Stephen O’Leary sang a great version of “Leaving Memphis” accompanying himself on guitar and helped also on banjo and mouth organ by Mick Folan. Martin Sheehan sang “By and By Lord By and By” in his own effortless way. Ger Sheen also sang brilliantly on the night. The night ended with a great trad session in the company of Mick Folan on flute, Stephen O’Leary on guitar and Martin Sheehan on the bodhran. A great night was had by all. Here’s hoping for success when the winners of the Pub Talent are announced. – Joseph Doyle

and the hapless pikemen or rebels. While the fighting was mostly hand to hand with many British yeomen ending up with sore chests from the pike, the pike was no match for the musket. The battle went on all day and although the rebels fled through a gap in the hedge today known as Needham’s Gap, the redcoats stayed behind looking for what rebels were left. They found a few old men, women and children who were left behind and slaughtered them viciously.

1798 BAttle of VInegAr HIll The year 1798 was the year of the first rebellion for Irish freedom from British rule – this was a failure like in 1916 but it did give us some history and some stories to tell our kids and grandkids. The 21st of June might be the longest day of the year and might be the summer solstice but it also marked one of the bloodiest battles in Irish history – the battle of Vinegar Hill. This battle was the bloodiest of the 1798 battles and took place on Vinegar Hill between the yeomen redcoats

on Sat 28th June 1-5pm

The blood of the slain on both sides flowed down the hill like lava from a volcano. In fact Vinegar Hill is a sleeping volcano which never erupted. The hill of the berry tree is the correct name for it, or Cnoc Fhiodh na gCaor in Irish. The full story of this battle is told in the 1798 Centre in Enniscorthy which is a jewel in our crown in Enniscorthy and also you can relive the battle on the 2nd and 3rd of August for the re-enactment weekend.

Aug 2nd–3rd: Vinegar Hill Battle Re-Enactment 2014

The rebels would have had very few muskets or guns, only slashhooks, pitch forks and pikes with the pikes being advantageous for desaddling the yeomen riders by grabbing the reins and the riders forcibly dismounted before meeting their end at the pointed end of the pike in their guts. The soldiers would have had only seconds to reload and shoot so for some it was a pike to the chest but on the other side it was a case of ‘bang you’re dead pikeman’. The reason the re-enactment is not on the same date (21st June) as the actual battle is due to the fact that it clashes with the re-enactment of the battle of Waterloo. – Joseph Doyle n

Athenaeum Bloomsday Enniscorthy Athenaeum Ltd celebrated Bloomsday in a wonderful venue which is carving out a great name for itself in literary circles. The Cotton Tree Café played host to Joyce enthusiasts, singers and musicians from teenagers to octogenarians across the county who enjoyed a night of world class literature, traditional folk songs, ballads and music from harp, mandolin, flute and guitar. The celebration in the name of James Joyce presented an opportunity to celebrate all things Irish with particular focus on County Wexford. On the bill was 14-year-old award-winning harpist Hilda Browne, from Holyfort, Gorey and her mother, Siobhán; Athenaeum director Josie Flood; Christine O’Brien; Noeleen Williams; Mary Ormond and Maura Flannery; Anne Marie Kearney, flautist and Tony Carty, mandolin. Giving readings from various works of Joyce were Donal Cullen, and Athenaeum Directors, Helen Ashdown and Athenaeum Bloomsday celebration originator, Maura Flannery. A number of open-mike speakers came forward, Mr Declan Downes. Looking the image of Joyce himself, he read with ease and humour and clarity. His presence is a must for next year. Another impromtu performance was given by Tom O’Shea who quoted Joyce at will, with confidence and without a screed of a note. The organisers are hoping that people will get to know the Bloomsday event in Enniscorthy as a place where they can come and participate and share a love of Joyce with the minimum of stress and formality so the celebration will grow and meander and flourish. The night was suitably concluded with a lively rendition of Finnegan’s Wake led by MC for the night, Tony McClean, Athenaeum Chairman, who thanked all for coming, for performing and sent best wishes to our patrons, Donncha Ó Dúlaing and Nicky Furlong who shared the day with us last year.

Focus On… It’s that time of the year again folks when the sun rays dance on the waters of the Slaney, and colourful butterflies flutter on equally colourful flowers and the sounds of children playing can be heard late into the evening and the County Wexford Strawberry Fest explodes on to the streets of Enniscorthy. This year’s Fest has gone back to its roots beginning on 17th June and continuing right up to the last Sunday of the month – the 29th. It is an action packed two weeks incorporating Strawberry Ball, Youth Disco, Pub Talent, A Taste of Wexford Strawberries, A Night at The Dogs, Music nightly in the Red Barn at Abbey Square, The Farmers Market, Teddy Bears Picnic, Enniscorthy Artists and Photographic displays and much, much more. But the main highlight of this year’s Strawberry Fest is the introduction of the first ever Wexford Literary Festival – FOCAL – which has been established to celebrate the wealth of literary talent that County Wexford has in abundance. Both Irish and International writers will join us in an exciting programme at The Presentation Centre, Enniscorthy Castle, Enniscorthy Library and Bunclody Library. This three-day Festival will include Masterclasses with authors, playwrights and poets, plus an American Literary Agent, that are designed to encourage and foster aspiring writers. Also included in the packed programme is the screening of a

The World of Empty Chairs Even if you are not buying a ticket for a Festival event a visit to the Strawberry Festival Office is a must to view the movingly beautiful collection of paintings by Artist Zane Sutra titled – the World of empty Chairs. Launched by artist and poet Denis Collins – this is, as Denis put it, “a quiet collection of poignant paintings each with a story or indeed a couple of stories and one needs to pull up a chair and sit quietly among these outstanding paintings to allow the meaning and magnitude of the collection to become apparent.” I allowed myself that time and something became immediately apparent to me – chairs are extremely important in each of our lives! Not something I had given much thought to previously but, as I observed Zane’s work, I began to think about how each member of each family has their own chair at the family table and indeed sometimes in the family room – it’s kinda the Goldilocks and the 3

Ilva Kama, Margerita Sutra and artist Zane Sutra. Pic: Maria Nolan.

Bears syndrome – no-one likes it when someone else sits in their chair and indeed we do not feel so comfortable sitting in any other chair except our own. Yes we all have that favourite chair at home, in the pub, at the bingo, on the bus, perhaps even in Church and we really aren’t impressed when someone else occupies it. And like the 3 Bears in all of our homes there was always daddy’s chair and mammy’s chair – and we all know what it feels like when those chairs become vacant.

Please send your poetry, prose, pics, reviews etc to: slaneynews@gmail.com

Yes thinking about it chairs play a very significant role in our lives. One of Zane’s paintings is a collection of chairs in a hall perhaps or in a pub – some stacked together – and without anything else in view this piece immediately conjurs up images of occasions, concerts, sessions, singsongs, etc. This is a fascinating, thought provoking study and extremely well painted and most definitely worth a visit. Go on pull up a chair! – Maria nolan

Eamonn will sing the role of Narraboth in the opening production of Salomé by Antoine Mariotte (1875-1944), a rarely-performed operatic version of Oscar Wilde’s perceptive play. Since moving to the UK, Eamonn’s operatic engagements have included work with English National Opera, Grange Park Opera, Scottish Opera, and Welsh National Opera. In May 2011, Eamonn debuted at the Royal Opera House Covent Garden in the world première of James MacMillan’s Clemency. This year 60 singers comprising the best of Irish and International talent will join the Wexford company. The 2014

The Wexford Arts Centre, on 17th June, hosted the premiere showing of Paul O’Reilly’s film eAMonn WAll: Your rivers Have trained You. Congratulations to Paul from all at the Slaney news on this wonderful piece of work. eAMonn WAll: Your rivers Have trained You is a portrait of one of Ireland’s leading poets. Filmed in 2013 in Eamonn’s native homeplace, Enniscorthy, the poet walks us through several chapters of his life, interweaving them with extracts from poems and essays that characteristically have come to reveal so much about his family, travels and influences. From difficulties experienced in early school years, through to becoming Professor of English at the University of Missouri-St. Louis in America. Eamonn Wall takes us on a journey from childhood to fatherhood, talking candidly of his emigration to New York, of the “New Irish”, of having children, of the impact of Irish storytelling and songs on his work, of discovering new poetic forms, of being published, of politics on both sides of the Atlantic, of his regular commutes across the ocean, and of his family. The 58-minute film was directed, filmed and edited by Paul O’Reilly and produced by Lowland Films. The music is by Black 47, Gearóid Ó hAllmhuráin and Niall Wall. It started out like any other day for Sarah Lawler; getting the kids ready for school, making the packed lunches and juggling baby Ella’s feeds. There was no way of knowing that her husband, Paul, would leave for work that morning and simply not come home. Now the questions are piling up quicker than the unpaid bills and, unable to answer her children’s questions about where their Daddy is, Sarah is getting desperate.
