WHERE CAN I PICK UP THE SLANEY NEWS?
What a busy summer it has been with so many festivals happening in recent months. And we’re not finished yet – later this month we have the novel Ireland Newfoundland Festival (see page 3) and of course next month it’s the great Blackstairs Blues Festival (as always we’ll have full details in our Sept issue). Here at the Slaney News we’ve been busy also. Thankfully we have never had as many new advertisers coming on board. Providing you, the reader, with a free Enniscorthy-based newspaper every month is only possible thanks to our regular advertisers (now numbering 150 approx). We would ask you to continue to support these advertisers in particular and local businesses in general. We would also ask you to continue to take pride in our town. Our local Tidy Towns Committee is working hard and needs our full support – see page 9 for more details. You can keep up to date with developments during the month on the Slaney News and the Enjoy Enniscorthy Facebook pages. And don’t forget you can read our recent back issues online at: www.issuu.com/slaneynews/docs. – Frank Corcoran

Enniscorthy’s Ireland Newfoundland Festival Cultural and Tourism interests in Enniscorthy have welcomed the announcement that the town is to host a three-day leg of the IrelandNewfoundland Festival in late August. The Ireland Newfoundland Festival is a unique event, growing in popularity annually, that brings both visitors and international attention to the areas where it is hosted. It is a unique community festival that rotates between Ireland and Newfoundland & Labrador, Canada, each year. The mission of the festival is ‘to promote awareness and knowledge and to exchange and encourage friendship between communities in Newfoundland & Labrador and Ireland and contribute to sustainable economic and social development’. In 2014 the festival will be held in South-East Ireland and Enniscorthy has been chosen as a host area for the closing three days from 28th to 30th August. Local event Chairman Niall Wall said: “Enniscorthy has a proud tradition in hosting major events and we are certain that the arrival of the Ireland Newfoundland Festival 2014 will be no different. We look forward to the involve-
ment and co-operation of all the citizenry of Enniscorthy and the statutory and community bodies of the town as we all join, as is our tradition, to make the event special with a unique Enniscorthy flavour.” The organisers are sincerely grateful for financial support received from the former Town Council – Johnny Mythen, the outgoing Chair, had this to say: “The Council is delighted to support this wonderful event that celebrates the historical links between South-East Ireland and Newfoundland. Some of our members visited Newfoundland for the Festival in the past and we look forward to returning the wonderful hospitality and welcome afforded us when the Festival comes Slaneyside in August.” The distinctive connection
between the two countries is fostered and celebrated through a programme of cultural, heritage, educational and business events. Various themes include culture, history and education. Community development projects are an important aspect each year and run throughout the festival. This year, numerous fringe, tourist and fun events will also take place within the host communities in South-East Ireland. While in Enniscorthy, the Canadian visitors will be treated to guided tours of all the historic areas and all our historic and cultural attractions, a Reception by Enniscorthy Municipal District Council, historic talks, social events, a ‘night at the dogs’ in Enniscorthy Dog Track, a hurling match at Bellefield GAA and a Gala Dinner in their
honour at the Riverside Park Hotel to close the festival. The Irish first went to Newfoundland following the voyages of John Cabot at the end of the 15th century – in fact the first record of an Irish ship on the Grand Banks in Newfoundland dates back as far as 1534. The migration linked to fishing continued mainly between mid-eighteenth and mid-nineteenth centuries and mainly from the South and Southeast of Ireland with names like Aylward, Byrne, Cahill, Doyle, Hogan, K i e l y, L a w l o r, M o o n e y, Murphy, Power, Walsh and Whalen and what is fascinating is that all those hundreds of years later these people still look like us, they talk like us, they sing the same songs and dance the same dances – the similarities are amazing! They travelled to Newfoundland for economic reasons to better themselves, now we want them to come back for economic reasons as B a r b a r a - A n n e M u r p h y, Cathaoirleach of Enniscorthy Municipal District, put it: “This is a wonderful opportunity to share the tourism and heritage delights of the Enniscorthy area with our Canadian visitors. We need to build on such festivals to market this part
Field of dreams The realisation of a dream is set to occur next month in our Cathedral town with the official opening of Enniscorthy Sports Hub incorporating an eight-lane, 400m, tartan athletic track and playing pitch. This long awaited and eagerly anticipated facility will be a huge asset to the town of Enniscorthy and to the sportspeople of Enniscorthy and further afield. We’ll have full details in our September issue.
Niall Wall
of County Wexford as a tourist destination by showcasing the attractions we have to offer. The visitors stay with host families in the area and get to experience Irish family life during their visit. I hope they all enjoy their trip to Enniscorthy and return home with many happy memories of their brief stay amongst us and plan to return again to the sunny South East.” – Maria Nolan, PRO

how much ram Do you neeD? First, let's take a moment to clarify what exactly more RAM can (and can't) do for you. The biggest benefit of upgrading your PC's memory is better multi-tasking; RAM generally does not make your PC faster, it just allows it to do more things at once, especially for those of us using RAM-hogging applications like Photoshop, Outlook, or AutoCAD. So do you need more than 4GB of RAM? It's true, very few applications are going to use large chunks of your system memory, but there are some applications that will benefit greatly from an upgrade. If you are running with 2GB or less RAM in your system, you could probably benefit from an upgrade unless you barely use your PC or run a single application at a time. If, like most users, you don't use Photoshop or virtual machines, you should probably have 4GB of RAM installed. If you are a power user with virtual machines or you do heavy audio/video/image editing, you should consider upgrading with as much RAM as you can afford. The well-known PC building site Tom's Hardware ran a bunch of tests on machines with different
RAM configurations, and ZDNet ran through a number of tests with the same conclusion – unsurprisingly, most people just don't need 8GB of RAM at this point. So be sure to examine your needs and upgrade appropriately. Of course RAM isn’t the only thing to consider if your laptop is running slow. If your laptop hasn’t been serviced in a while, it
may have a lot of rogue programs running in the background, eating up your RAM, one megabyte at a time. As ever if you have queries about this article or you’d like me to talk about a tech issue that interests or concerns you in a future article, then pop me an email at sam@getitfixed.ie, or you can phone the shop on 053 9238544. n
Happy Birthday Wells Victorian Garden Party at Wells House. Pic: Maria Nolan.

Above right: Sean Fitzpatrick, and dog Chad, and Anne McClean. Right: Bishop Denis Brennan at the Corpus Christi Procession in Enniscorthy on 25th June. Wells house celebrated its first birthday on sunday 13th July with a splendid Victorian Garden Party. A trip back in time that had something for everyone in the family. Music, food, history, falconry, magic, fun and games, crafts and woodland trails complete with faery doors and gruffalows! It had it all and all for only €6 car admission. What tremendous value for a family – pay your parking fee – bring your own picnic and enjoy a wonderful afternoon’s entertainment. of course if you don’t want to bother with the picnic you can avail of the lovely restaurant at Wells house.
A re-enactment group wandered elegantly and mingled graciously in exquisite period costumes – handsome soldiers in WW1 uniforms and ladies in lavender and lace all adding to the ambience of the lovely occasion. War games were organised for the children with capturing Hans – the German – high on the list! The re-enactors were pleasant and willing to converse and have their photograph taken as they strolled languidly in the afternoon sunshine. Hats off to Sabine and Ulrich Rossler who are doing magnificent things with Wells House. I simply love their
Woodland Walk complete with faery doors and trails of faery dust – it’s magical for me never mind the children. I sat beside Sabine for a short while at school in Colaiste Bride many moons ago and it is marvellous to see what she has achieved. There was such a variety of things to do on the day to keep all age groups happy and occupied with hourly tours of the house adding yet another historic dimension and I would strongly recommend it for a most enjoyable and fulfilling family day out. Well done Wells. – Maria Nolan

Ready for Battle! The third annual re-enactment of the Battle of Vinegar hill took place at the historic Enniscorthy location on saturday and sunday, August 2nd and 3rd and organisers say it was the busiest battlefield to-date. A crowd of over 300 Rebels and Redcoats took part in the largest annual battle re-enactment in Ireland, as pike-charging Rebels and musket-wielding Redcoats recreated the most significant battles in Ireland’s history, the 1798 Rebellion.
Prior to the event, Jacqui Hynes, Manager at the 1798 National Rebellion Centre, commented, “Rebel and Redcoat training has been taking place now since April and this year’s battle on the famous Vinegar Hill is set to be the biggest reenactment yet, as well as Irish Rebels we have professional re-enactors as Redcoats from Ireland, England, Scotland, Northern Ireland, from the 23rd Royal Welsh Fusiliers to the Staff of the Irish Establishment of the British Army at Dublin
Castle and more who will all battle as the ‘Crown Forces’ during the re-enactment. It will be a sight to behold, to live, breathe and witness a re-creation of history.” Each year the Battle of Vinegar Hill Re-enactment attracts thousands of spectators to Enniscorthy as the town explodes into rebellion with cannon bombardments, cavalry assaults, musket volleys and pike charges, clouding the town in the sights, sounds, and smells of battle.
The highlight of each day was the staging of two fullscale battle re-enactments on view freely to the public, the Rebels captured Enniscorthy town on Saturday, August 2nd while the Redcoats took Vinegar Hill on Sunday August 3rd. A wreath-laying ceremony commemorating all those lost in battle during the 1798 Rebellion also took place. There was plenty of action in town for all the family throughout the weekend, including a visit to the rebel camp of the 1798 Rebellion or the Crown Force soldiers in Enniscorthy Castle, viewing traditional crafts and browsing the craft and antique fairs,
and witnessing the exhibition ‘Rebels Vs Redcoats’ polocrosse match.
Hand-to-hand combat on the Hill. PIc: Maria Nolan.
But the main event was The Battle of Vinegar Hill – the final major battle of the Irish Rebellion of 1798. Over 10,000 crown forces launched an attack on Vinegar Hill, overlooking Enniscorthy, which was then occupied by over 20,000 rebels and camp followers. This was the largest rebel camp and headquarters of the Wexford United Irishmen and their supporters. It marked a turning point in the Irish Rebellion of 1798 as it was the last major attempt by the rebels to hold and defend ground against the crown forces / the army of King George III. Advice & hints from your locAl hArdwAre teAm sUMMer DIY DeCOrATINg sAFeTY If you are thinking of doing some diy decorating or renovating over the next few weeks, make sure the money you plan on saving isn't offset by doctors’ bills. Summer sees a rise of accidents from homeowners doing it themselves – incorrectly. Many diy-ers are tempted to work with a combination of the three most dangerous elements in a home – electricity, gas, and water. Whether you are working with water, electricity or gas, follow these basic safety tips to keep your summer accident free. 1. safety kit. Make sure you have a first-aid safety kit nearby at all times and make sure your family knows where it is. 2. Fire extinguisher. In addition to a first-aid kit, keep a fire extinguisher nearby. Make sure it's large enough for the job. It should be an A-B-C extinguisher to handle the widest range of fires. 3. Water and electricity don't mix. Water and electricity don't mix – ever. When you are working on electricity, make sure the power is turned off at the source or electrical box. If in doubt,

Enniscorthy Tidy Town news The Annual Tidy Town Competition will be held as usual this year. The categories are Gardens (large, medium and small), shop Fronts, Window Boxes and hanging Baskets, Public Buildings, Most Improved Premises, Industrial Premises, Tidiest street and housing Estate. Closing date is 15th August 2014. Entry forms available from Council offices, Market square, or from any committee member.
The competition has been very popular for a number of years and is used to create an awareness of our environment and surroundings. It is hoped that the number of entries will increase each year as participation in the annual event generates an interest in our immediate communities that eventually benefits the town and its appearance. The Ti d y To w n Committee and its volunteers have been very active
over recent weeks picking litter and preparing the entry form for this year’s National Tidy Town Competition. Keeping Enniscorthy tidy and clean is an uphill struggle as a result of a section of our population continuing to mess up our beautiful town and countryside with the indiscriminate dropping of litter and illegal dumping; but we are going to press on regardless. – Seán Doyle Secretary/Treasurer

double and triple check. And if you are working on electrical lighting, appliances, or wiring, stay away from water or even dampness. 4. Don't overload. When you are working with power tools, don't be tempted to overload your household outlets. If your outlets look like spaghetti with several layers of extensions, you have a potential fire hazard, not to mention the hazard of tripping over cords everywhere. 5. Ladders. Don't use a ladder on an uneven surface. Make certain it's on a stable flat surface. And never stand on the top two rungs as the ladder may become unstable. 6. Attire. As you are working, make sure you wear safety glasses, work gloves, and clothes that are not loose enough that they can potentially get caught or snagged by power tools. 7. Outdoors. Apply the same rules as above when doing diy jobs outside. Also keep your mobile handy in case the worst happens and you will be able to call for help.
1. When carrying out painting work inside the house, always start at the top of the house and work your way down. 2. Before doing any electrical work, make sure the power is turned off at the mains. You can plug in a kettle or something similar, and switch it on to check that the power is actually off. Also keep a torch by the consumer board, and keep candles and matches handy in case your home’s electricity fails. 3. Before wall mounting any heavy items like flat screen TVs, mirrors or shelving, check that the surface in question is sturdy. Crumbly plasterwork won’t take much weight. Keep these rules in mind and your summer renovations can be accident free. Break them, and the next thing you might be decorating is a plaster cast!

Enniscorthy Rocks Everything was rockin’ Slaneyside in mid July as our Wexford warriors emerged victorious from yet another epic battle this time against Waterford in Nowlan Park and as the Purple and Gold band marched onwards Enniscorthy moved to the beat of Food Glorious Food and Rock and Roll. Wexford hurling and rock and roll – what a combination – both strenuous on the old ticker – but both so worth it! It was a fabulous weekend of music, hurling and positivity around Enniscorthy beginning on Friday evening with an excellent Launch at Enniscorthy Castle by US Embassy representative Angie Smith who was enthralled with the Castle venue and requested a tour before the official opening of the Riverside Jump weekend. I was delighted to accompany Angie and take some shots of her – including a particularly nice one in the Eileen Gray room. Angie works with an old friend of mine at the American Embassy so we had an immediate connection. In her speech Angie referred to the fantastic music connection between Ireland and the States and said that rock and roll

wouldn’t be what it is without the Irish influence. Minister Paul Kehoe was also in attendance at the Launch as was Chairperson of the Municipal District Council, Barbara-Anne Murphy, who really enjoyed MC Sean Doyle’s witty words of introduction but Richie Cotter of the Festival Committee stole the show when he interrupted the Minister entering as Diarmuid Mac Murrough wielding both words and axe as only Richie can! The celebrity entourage left the Castle looking very Kennedy like in a beige Cadillac heading for a rock and roll session at Toss Kavanagh’s pub.
Saturday dawned bright and beautiful at the Farmers’ Market with chefs Catherine Fulvio and Paul Flynn adjudicating at the All Ireland Farmers Market / Lidl Competition where one lucky winner will receive the prize worth at least €100,000 – €75,000 cash, €25,000 for product development / marketing and the winning product on the shelves in all Lidl stores around the country – now there’s a prize worth competing for – well done Lidl. The Market Square was buzzing with the scintillating sounds of rock and roll, and wafting with enticing aromas from the encircling food stalls.
All in all a wonderful vista at the heart of our Cathedral town and greatly enjoyed by all. Uplifting to hear all the positive comments and well done to all the organisers of this terrific festival. I even heard people at Market Square expressing the opinion that we should look at doing something like this once a month in the town and wouldn’t it be wonderful if we could. I attended the gig at The Bailey later on Saturday night – actually much later – as it took quite a long time to get home from the hurling game in Kilkenny – once again noone being in any hurry to leave the scene of victory. So clad in purple and gold I went on to celebrate Wexford’s win and totally enjoyed the festival event – with rock and rollers in full flight, in some fabulous 50’s outfits and hairdos – it was an occasion for both participant and spectator. An excellent and most enjoyable weekend and definitely a festival with massive potential for the town – one to develop and foster and well done to all involved particularly chief movers Eamonn Doyle and Richie Cotter. – Maria Nolan

Jigs and Reels
One participant taking part in this year’s Jigs & Reels who wouldn’t necessarily be known for being light on his feet is local man Kent Ashmore. He decided to take the challenge on behalf of two worthy charities – St Luke’s Hospital and St Anthony’s pre-school for children with special needs in Bellefield. Kent is fortunate in being partnered with Cait Doyle – an All Ireland Champion dancer on two occasions. The dancing pair took over DBar in Enniscorthy on Friday 18th July and hosted an evening with great food and a Garth Brooks tribute show. With sponsorship in place for the food and the band all proceeds from the night will go to their chosen charities. You can follow Kent and Cait on their facebook page – www.facebook.com/kentandcaitjigsandreels. n

Talented Sam’s success in L.A. A talented 19-year-old Wexford singer, Sam O'Shea from Coolcotts, has just returned from Los Angeles where he was representing Ireland at the World Championship of Performing Arts. Sam was chosen to represent Ireland back in December after attending auditions held by the national team director for Ireland – Maureen V. Ward. Sam was over the moon to be chosen to represent his country and especially Wexford in something that he really enjoys doing – singing. The event which is an Olympic style event for Performing Arts took place in the world famous Westin Bonaventure Hotel in Downtown LA. Singers, dancers, actors, models and instrumentalists from 50 different countries from all over the world came together to compete against
each other in many different categories and competitions. The event ran for two weeks and entailed workshops, auditions, agent/manager meetings and the competitions themselves. Sam had the chance to work with top industry experts in practical workshops with vocal coaches such as Bob Garrett (vocal coach to Katy Perry, Va n e s s a H u d g e n s , D re w Barrymore, Hugh Jackman, Channing Tatum and many more) and producers including Marc Williams (Kelly Rowland, Madonna, Chris Brown, Janet Jackson and many more) and Broadway agents such as Victoria Morris and Patrick Hart. Sam was also invited to meet with agents and managers and was also invited to audition for the New York Film Academy and was given a workshop from the staff of New York conservatory of dramatic arts.
Sam competed in five vocal categories at the championships – Broadway, Opera, Jazz, Pop and World. Sam was lucky enough to win a Silver Medal in Vocal Broadway for his performance of Close Every Door to Me from the musical Joseph and the Amazing Te c h n i c o l o r Dreamcoat by Andrew Lloyd Webber and a Bronze Medal in Vocal World for his performance of The Contender by singer/songwriter Jimmy McCarthy. Sam competed in the 18-24 age category and battled out against over 400 competitors in his age category. Enniscorthy Drama Group’s new play Earlier this month we sat down with the director of Enniscorthy Drama Group’s upcoming production of Glengarry Glen Ross, Jamie T Murphy, to find out how rehearsals were going and what we expect to see after the group’s last production, the hilarious Tom, Dick and Harry. We first asked Jamie where the group stands now in their second year and how the last show went. “Well, we are now to my mind nearly fully established. After a great start with the one acts last year, Ritual For Dolls and Tinker’s Wedding we are going strong. And Ritual went on the National One Act Circuit taking in Dundrum, Cork, Goresbridge and Gorey. I thoroughly enjoyed myself on the road and I felt it made us stronger as a group. We had a great director in Siobhan Duggan who believed in the show and more importantly she believed in us. I feel my performance could have been at least ten times better in retrospect but the rest of the guys were great and it established us as a viable force in the dramatic scene again. It let people know that we were back with fresh blood, a fresh outlook and a very talented group. Your last show Tom, Dick and Harry was a great success by all accounts. How did you find the show? Well at first, and I can’t speak for everyone, I genuinely believed we couldn’t pull it off. The script read like an unused episode of Fawlty Towers or Only Fools. Quickfire gags, action and loads of in-and-out movement. But again we had a director, this time our chairperson Colum Coomey, who again believed in the show and he
Glengarry Glen Ross
Alec Baldwin in the 1992 film version of the play. had no doubts we could do the show justice. It does help when you’re working with a great bunch of actors (and no I’m not just saying that because my fiancée played Linda…). I have always been a firm believer that if you surround yourself with a strong team you can become almost invincible. I mean look at Tony Stark!! But no, seriously, we got stuck in and we all put a serious amount of work into it. It was effectively an ensemble piece and everyone gave 110%. Apart from Colum, he was phoning it in… I kid, I kid. He was giving around 85%. Glengarry is a completely different kettle of fish, why this show? This show has been a bug in my ear since 2007, while I was studying in Aberystwyth in fact. Our scriptwriting lecturer, Terry Bailey, showed us the Alec Baldwin clip from the opening of the 1992 film version of the play. It lasts a mere seven minutes and he is never seen
again but the monologue went on to win an Oscar. It was immense. I had to read the play and when I did I was blown away. Every page was better than the last and the dialogue? It goes so fast you have trouble taking in every little gem. The playwright, David Mamet, is just a master of language. There is not a single word, phrase or sentence that is not effective and useful, he has no capacity for waste. And when the opportunity came up for proposals for a second summer show after Tom, Dick and Harry I threw my hat into the ring, so it is a passion project finally reaching fruition some seven years later! How did you find the casting process? Luckily we are blessed with an unnatural amount of acting talent in this tiny county. And the stars must have aligned and the birds sung because most of them turned up to audition for this show. It wasn’t an easy task to decide who to keep and who not to keep. But in the

thetic quality and you almost feel sorry for him. George Aaranow is Bunclody’s Ronan P. Byrne who was our Tom in Tom, Dick and Harry. I can’t give too much away here, you need to come and see the show to see the transformation. Mr. Fintan Kelly plays John Williamson, the office boss, which means he gets to shout, boss people around and get one up on people, a struggle I’m sure. George Percival plays James Lingk and the man can do more without saying a word than I ever thought possible. Last, but by no means least, the detective in the middle of this horrible group of humans, Baylen, is played by Phillip Davis. A thankless role who receives nothing but abuse from everyone!
The production boasts the largest Irish dance show around with a cast of top Irish dancers and aspiring professionals including participants from countries such as Japan, Australia, USA, Canada, Mexico, Russia, Italy, France, Norway, G e r m a n y, R o m a n i a a n d Portugal.
McAvinchey, who runs his own Irish dance schools in Germany, Poland, Spain and Russia says, “The vast international flavour of the show makes it truly unique. We staged the first Take The Floor project over two and a half years ago in Dublin and it was amazing to see an Irish dance show with
Jamie T Murphy end, I made a decision alongside our trusted stage manager, Myles Mullally. Man, Mongo. But no, seriously, the cast for this one is nothing short of phenomenal pulling in talent from Bunclody, Wexford, Gorey and indeed Enniscorthy. Can you tell us a bit about the cast? I can, and I will. Richard Roma is being played by Nic Furlong who has that instantaneous charisma that can’t be taught, it’s just there. David Moss is Stephen Rooney and he brings a quiet menace to the character, and he swears beautifully. Sheldon Levene, played by Michael Conway from Wexford, gives Levene a lovely empa-
over 15 countries represented among the dancers.” Live music for Take The Floor will be provided by top traditional Irish band, Beoga, described by The Wall Street Journal as “the most exciting new traditional band to emerge from Ireland this century”. Paula Goulding danced for 7 years with Riverdance where she was dance captain of the Broadway production and also principal understudy. She directed, choreographed and co-produced Dancing Thru’ The Ages and was a coach, performer and winner of RTE's Celebrity Jigs n’ Reels. When is the show running? We are knee deep in rehearsals at the minute. The show opens on Thursday the 28th of August in The Presentation Centre and runs until Saturday the 30th. Unfortunately George won’t be on stage on the Thursday as Gorey are putting on Tom, Dick and Harry as a summer show and George is Tom. So, for the opening night, I will be playing James Lingk. But the show runs for three nights and our last show was a huge suc-
cess with three sold out nights! I must stress the language and content is colourful and as such the show is strictly open to people aged 16 and over! You have been warned! We are having a launch night on the 13th of August in Holohan’s Pub, where we have been kindly given the upstairs room to rehearse in by Niall himself. Cheers, Niall. Our special guest for the night will be author, RTE and Hot Press regular Mr. Peter Murphy. A man we should hold in higher regard, in my humble opinion, he was written two five-star novels and is a phenomenal writer. So you are all cordially invited to the launch! Where can people get tickets? There will be posters going up around the town and further afield with information on them in the next week or two. Follow us on Facebook and Twitter for ticket info and keep an eye on local press as well. Tickets will be €10 across the board and you should get them as soon as they become available. I believe in this show. I believe in the work, the cast, the crew and everyone that will have a hand in helping us put it on stage. Tickets will fly! Get on it as soon as you can and A.B.C. Always Be Closing! n
Single success for Donna Marie Congratulations to local singer/songwriter Donna Marie on the success of her current single Another Way To Cry which was released on 11th July. The livewire from Enniscorthy benefits from having been surrounded by music from birth. At age 15 she became a member of the legendary band "Breeze Junkie/Breeze52" and has made the transfer from a talented band member to a leading solo artist with many appearances on RTE. Her debut single "Simple Song" in April 2010 made it into the Irish Charts and was followed up by her second single "I can’t see it" which was released in April 2011 along with her first music video on YouTube. She released her 11-track debut album “My Voice” on iTunes in February 2012. Last October Donna Marie released ‘I’m Missin’ You’ which made it to number 2 on the Country iTunes chart. After fighting a four-year battle with vocal nodules Donna Marie finally had them removed this April and then released her first ever Irish country single “Another Way To Cry” to iTunes and all major download stores on 11th July. Last year, he released Standards, his tenth solo album and only his second since 1995 to feature a full band of additional musicians, including Matthew Sweet and sometime Lou Reed drummer Fred Maher. Denise Gordon Redmond, organiser of the Carlsberg Pub Talent competition, judge, adjudicator, 2012 overall female vocalist, was in bits on Thursday 26th June as the first ever Battle of the Pubs was held collectively in the Riverside Park Hotel. Tentatively set up for 400, she was overwhelmed that 700 people attended to hear what many felt was THE event of the Strawberry Festival. She was overwhelmed with the generosity of people from the Pub Talent who stepped in to help organise the sound for the two stages. Six pubs were selected for the battle but one had to withdraw as some of their show participants had to compete in an All-Ireland dance competition. Rules were kept simple this year. The pubs were advised they had 30 minutes in which to entertain us, using local pub drinkers/entertainers. Each of the pubs which put on a show, put on a show to die for. Every show was sooooo good. The Judges were: Denise Gordon Redmond who has brought the Pub Talent to a new level (summing her up as organ-

Chang Thai Head Chef, Dao
Award for Chang Thai
Roisín O’Carroll doing a brisk trade for Wheelock Fruits, in Abbey Square, Enniscorthy.
A taste of Wexford Strawberries “Delicious” was the word heard at the second a taste of Wexford Strawberries competition sponsored by bord bia and the Wexford fruit producers at riverside park hotel on Tuesday 24 June, as part of the Strawberry festival. Delicious strawberries and delicious Strawberry Mojitos on arrival sponsored by Diageo! it was the perfect start to a lively night with the four successful homecooks selected to compete being Jane Whelan, Liz fitzgerald, Linda Thorpe and Ann Murphy, all interviewed by West end, London, actor peter McCamley. Peter kept the homecook event flowing as he interviewed each homecook about the dishes they were creating, tips they had on cooking their chosen dessert, and much more fun! The highlight was the sampling of their creations after the judges, Phelim Byrne of Phelim Byrne (Seasuir) and Liz Wall (President, ICA) had tasted the entries. In hot pursuit of the homecook cook-off were the two chefs selected from the leading chefs at Wexfordian establishments. The two selected chefs w e r e R i c h i e Tr a p p e o f Greenacres, Selskar, Wexford (the 2013 Award Winning Chef) and Paul McClelland of The Bailey, Enniscorthy. They too were interviewed until the room developed a hush as the two chefs intently prepared their dishes. Richie Trappe prepared two dishes: one was
smoked fish terrine with strawberry & lime jelly, and a white balsamic and strawberry reduction followed by a vanilla penna cotta with hazelnut dacquoise biscuit, strawberry sphere and strawberry & white chocolate warm milk shot. Paul McClelland produced Wexford Lamb Three Ways with spinach, mint, beetroot & strawberry, followed by The Taste of Wexford Strawberries of strawberries with cream, honey and brownies. Whilst the judges deliberated on the winning chef, Eamonn Kehoe of Teagasc explained the art of modern strawberry growing with slides and Q & A and the Wexford ICA showed a beautiful selection of crafts. T h e We x f o r d F r u i t Producers sponsored the homecook competition. The winner of the homecook competition was… Linda Thorpe, producing a strawberry dessert that was for the regular palate delicious but could also be served to suit celiacs as Linda herself is diagnosed as gluten intolerant. As a lover of cooking, she wanted her entry to appeal to ALL palates. Cyril Wheelock, Chair, Strawberry Festival and 2010 and 2013 Strawberry Grower of the Year, presented the finalists and Linda with their trophies from Gift Tree, Wexford. Laura Kelly, of Kelly’s Resort, Rosslare, was on hand to present the Kelly Award to the winning chef Richie Trappe. – anne Gilpin

Tom on board
Tom Moorehouse
enniscorthy Athenaeum Ltd is delighted to announce the appointment of a new director to the company. At a meeting of the board in July, Tom Moorehouse, Moran park, r e c e n t l y r e t i r e d To w n Councillor and well-respected charity worker, joined the ranks of the Athenaeum. Tom sat on the town council for a number of years, and is a firm favourite among his peers, with an easy manner, no-nonsense attitude and approachable demeanour. Tom and wife, Teresa, are synonymous with voluntary work for charity and the Church, one of their biggest successes being the Bosnian appeal which is still raising money to this day. The Athenaeum is honoured to have someone of Tom’s character and experience come on board at this stage with an
i n d e p e n d e n t a n d f re s h approach. Also, Michael Freeman, G a l b a l l y, Bre e , h a s b e e n appointed Press Adviser to Enniscorthy Athenaeum. It was felt by the board that in order to maximise potential and get the publicity needed to garner as much support and grant aid as possible, an expert in the field was essential. Mr Freeman is a journalist, publisher and entrepreneur. He is giving his services free of charge. The Athenaeum narrowly missed out on grant aid last December, but the directors are optimistic that they will be in with a good shout when more money becomes available next year. Helen Ashdown, spokesperson for the directors said: “With Paul Kehoe secure as Chief Whip again, we hope he will continue to lobby on behalf of the Athenaeum, and Enniscorthy, to help get us the grant aid we so badly need, so that everything is in place for the 1916 centenary. The Athenaeum, or ‘Enniscorthy’s GPO’ as Ray Murphy and the Re-enactment Society dubbed it, is unquestionably central to any commemoration of that empire-shaking Easter week one hundred years ago. There are sons and daughters and granddaughters and grandsons of the men and women who served in the Athenaeum from all parts of the county, who need to be able to remember their family member with pride in the appropriate place.”
Castle Tours In addition to the normal, daily, guided and self-guided tours, during the month of August Enniscorthy Castle will be open later than usual on Thursdays to allow a guided tour at 6pm. From the dungeon to the roof, hear about the Normans, Sir Henry Wallop, the life and times of the Roche family, the 1916 Easter Rising in Enniscorthy and the story of Eileen Gray. Adults €4, Seniors and Students €3, and families €10.
SF seeks support for Post Offices and emigrants At the July meeting of Wexford Co. Council, Sinn féin’s fionntán Ó Súilleabháin proposed a motion in relation to Wexford’s rural post offices: "Wexford County Council notes the ongoing concern regarding the future of our rural postal service. it further notes that three rural post offices have closed in Co.Wexford in recent times. Wexford County Council will support the campaign by the postmasters union and others, calling on the government to put an Action plan in place immediately for the long term sustainability of our post office network, involving an expanded rural post office service." Fionntán stated: "In recent years in North Wexford alone post offices have been cut in A s k a m o re , B a l l y g a r re t t , Ballymoney, Castletown, Craanford, Hollyfort, Inch and Killenagh. The fabric of rural Ireland is being ripped apart in the name of so-called progress. Its time to shout stop and for the government to put an action plan in place to reverse the d e c l i n e o f ru r a l I re l a n d . Otherwise it'll just be a case of letting the last one turn out the lights." The motion was passed unanimously.
Fionntán Ó Súilleabháin
bring TheM hoMe Cllr fionntán Ó Súilleabháin has also called for a scheme to entice emigrants to come home. A scheme needs to be introduced to enable Irish emigrants forced out over the last six years to come home according to Cllr O' Súilleabháin who said that the government already offers tax reliefs to enable large companies to bring in high paid executives to work here and now it was high time that similar actions were taken to bring our emigrants home. "Over 300,000 people have left this country since the recession began in 2008… Sinn Féin is proposing that a fund be created, financed in part by the National Lottery and the EIB, to enable our emigrants to come home.” n

Derek says he is delighted to lead the team at the Ferrycarrig Hotel. “I am looking forward to continuing and enhancing the Ferrycarrig hotel’s reputation as a superb hotel property with multiple offerings as a family holiday destination and a top wedding venue. I am excited to work alongside the existing management team of Jeanette and Michael O’Keeffe and all the superb team at the Ferrycarrig Hotel. I am thrilled to be back working in Wexford and I am looking forward to welcoming visitors old and new to this superb hotel.” Derek lives with his wife Laura and daughter Gia in Enniscorthy. n
Local business confidence improves A further sign that the domestic market in the South east continues to improve, albeit slowly, is evidenced by the fact that nearly two-thirds of businesses are reporting improved customer activity in the last six months. As a result, 59% of businesses expect sales to be better this year than last and around one in four expects to employ more people by the end of the year. These good bits of news are the key findings of the latest South east business Confidence Study published in May. The hotels/restaurants/ tourism sector will see the
biggest increase in employment with 38% of businesses expecting to hire more – followed by financial services (32%) and construction (30%). However, businesses in all sectors are broadly positive about sales this year. In fact, almost 1 in 5 businesses claim their recovery is "well-established". Commenting on the results, John Gilsenan, Managing Director of Market Dynamics, stated: "The steady improvement in the business environment is continuing and the fact that the transport and distribution sector is so positive is yet another indicator that the
domestic market is literally ‘moving’ again. As we would expect, increased employment will follow well behind increased sales as spare capacity is likely to exist at the moment. One concern is that though all sectors are showing positive signs, nonetheless, there is a proportion of businesses in every sector whose sales are still falling and for whom the improving business environment has not been sufficient to turn the tide. For many of these, you would have to worry about their future prospects." Visit the website to view
chased it. ‘Planned obsolescence’ is now so prevalent it is looked upon as normal. You could believe that there is a built-in obsolescence in most modern appliances. It is claimed that manufacturers are deliberating limiting the life of a product so as to induce the buyer to replace it. The May 2014 edition of the UK consumer magazine Which in an article titled ‘Repair or Replace’ found that there were great differences in the cost of repairing an appliance between quotations from different firms; e.g. for a new washing machine door seal the price quoted ranged from £50 to £158. The magazine found that national retailers and manufacturers in Britain were more costly for repairs than independent firms. We all remember the time when we kept our old jalopies going for many years with the expertise of local mechanics. Now we rush to purchase the latest model with many years left in the life of the old model. The lifespan of countless consumer goods has never been
shorter as new products render previous models outmoded. Our demand for the instant, new and cheap has led to the setting up of contemporary sweat shops in Bangladesh and elsewhere and when the slappedup buildings the s l a v e l a b o u re r s work in collapse, thousands die. The insatiable craving for ‘growth’ has led to all kinds of banking collapses, austerity, false political promises and other shenanigans that haven’t surfaced in the public domain yet. Bring back to the fore the ‘handyman’ and let him/her repair our malfunctioning appliances and prevent almost new models being dumped. Manufacturers are contributing to present day obsolescence because their products are predicated on us buying the new. Of course, proper maintenance can prolong the lifetime

business & retail incentive Scheme for Vacant property in Templeshannon, enniscorthy Under a pilot incentive scheme for vacant property, Wexford County Council is offering incentives for the encouragement of business and retail uses in designated areas of Enniscorthy especially on Templeshannon, Shannon Quay, Railway Square, Lower Shannon and Spring Valley, in order to address vacancy on these streets. The grant is being offered as a contribution towards fit out costs. There will be a strong presumption in favour of grant-aid for higher order comparison retail outlets including fashion outlets – both multiple and independent stores, ‘lifestyle stores’, flagship stores, niche and specialist retailers such as home furnishings, beauty products, jewellery and books. A clustering of these uses in particular at ground and 1st floor level will help to develop a vibrant retail quarter.

Is ‘Planned Obsolescence’ the modern driving force of growth? We are living in an increasingly ‘throwaway culture’. When our fridge-freezers, washing machines, vacuum cleaners, or any other appliances in our homes conk out we are generally told that it would be cheaper to purchase a new appliance rather than repair the cause of the problem. One would think that with the global recession enveloping us that we wouldn’t be rushing to purchase a new replacement before we seriously consider repairing our old model. No doubt the manufacturers are aware that there is a yearning on the part of the consumer to possess an appliance that is newer sooner than is it is essential to do so. It is claimed it is an approach that has been driving manufacturing processes for some fifty years. Today we have flat pack furniture only to be designed once, operating systems applicable for a couple of years, and a smart phone that is old hat by the time you bring it home from the shop where you pur-

of any product. I believe that manufacturers are not required by law to p ro d u c e s p a re p a r t s f o r machines they ceased making – or even for those that are still in production. It is hoped that present day austerity has led us to respect our appliances and not dump them when they breakdown. Local expertise in repairing modern appliances should be encouraged and professional training courses specifically geared towards the reduction of obsolescence be instituted. – Seán Doyle

VET DIARY FOR AUGUST with the Moyne Veterinary Clinic
This month, Joe Kavanagh has some advice on keeping your pet safe during hot and humid weather.
Above: June Harper (Judge) with Sarah O’Neill, Camolin, and her prizewinning ram lamb.
Above: George Jacob, Dunsinane, leads a young hereford to the ring. Below: the two Jems – Jem Furlong and Jem Cousins.
Summer brings the welcome sunshine that gives us vital vitamin D and helps our metabolism, our bone structure and calcium absorbtion. Along with that sunshine, especially this summer, the 'heavy weather', as we say here in Ireland, humidity can take its toll on our four legged friends. They will be more inlined to rest, sleep more and eat less. The same as ourselves in summer, pets don't need the same level of feeding so you can throttle back on the grub as their system doesn't have the same energy requirements as in the winter to keep themselves warm. The humidity can also affect them even if they're used to being in the car. Leaving the windows down a reasonable amount will be very important for them. Also essential is ample, good drinking water. Dogs don't sweat, they pant to regulate their temperature so keep a watchful eye out for them and don't leave them in the car unattended in the blaring heat if at all possible. Park in the shade or under a big tree. The parking warden will forgive you!!! Getting your furry dogs clipped is also a big bonus for them to counteract the heat. Don't take them out in the red hot part of the day. Early morning is cool or the evening is best especially if your dog is in anyway compromised with health problems such as heart, lung, or kidney problems. As always, if in doubt, we are glad to offer assisance and advice at our clinic. Enjoy the Summer! n

“Time to ban cruelty to circus animals” banning circus animal acts from performing on public land in Wexford would be a progressive move and would set a more fitting example for our children than letting them view caged elephants, a Wexford County Councillor has argued. Cllr Mick Roche (pictured) said that he intends to move a similar motion before Wexford County Council to the one that was recently put forward by his party colleagues in Cork in an attempt to stop alleged cruelty to circus animals. "Currently the Minister for Agriculture in
the six counties, Sinn Féin’s Michelle O’Neill, is in negotiations with the Department of Agriculture here with a view to an island-wide ban on travelling animal circuses. Until that can become law, it is necessary for individual councils to enact their own legislation," he says. "It has to be stressed that Sinn Féin are not against circuses, but we feel that there are more fitting environments for animals of this nature to be viewed and that there is absolutely nothing preventing a non-animal-act circus from being as profitable as an animal
act one. Public safety must also be considered. Twice in the last decade elephants have escaped from a circus in this state and ran wild. If this was to happen o n t h e ro a d b y We x f o rd Racecourse, it would undoubtedly lead to an accident." n

A local contributor looks at life today in Enniscorthy and beyond miCk WAllACe The antics of Mick Wallace and Clare Daly at Shannon Airport recently certainly drew a lot of attention. Their motives may have been well intentioned but it’s doubtful that the majority of the 13,000 people who voted for Wallace would approve of him deliberately breaking the law. As a member of Dail Eireann Mick is a legislator and as such must have respect for the law of the land. He has ample opportunity to raise any matter he wishes within the forum of the Oireachtas without resorting to the tactics of a lawbreaker. In fairness to him since his election he has used the Dail to good effect to highlight many injustices. However when it comes down to the law, he, like the rest of us, should abide by it. For instance if I think that a speed limit on a particular road is too restrictive am I entitled to break it as a matter of principle? Are those who disagree with the property tax entitled not to pay it? How far would we get if all of us decided to take the law into our own hands. Society would break down and there would be total chaos. Quite simply none of us would survive. We look to people like Wallace to represent us as his constituents and fully accept his right to express his strongly held opinions but when it comes to the law I think that most of us want him to respect it.
r.t.e. We all subsidise R.T.E. through the annual licence fee of €160 per year. Not a lot in the overall context but enough to entitle us to a reasonable service. But are we getting it? I don’t think so. During the summer season a massive percentage of programmes are repeats. On one Sunday night recently, excluding the news, R.T.E. ran six programmes between 5pm and midnight. Four of these were repeats, in some cases running consecutively. Not good enough I say. tDs’ phone expenses The recent court case involving former Minister of State Ivor Callelly where he pleaded guilty to fiddling his phone expenses raises an important issue. That issue is the allowances which T.D.s get towards the purchase of mobile phones. Every 18 months these people are given €750 towards the purchase of a new phone. This is on top of their salary, which is at least €1,700 per week for a backbench TD, €2,300 a week for a Minister of State and €3,700 a week for a Minister and on top of all that at least another €1,000 a week in expenses. Of the 166 TDs I wonder would it be possible to find one of them courageous enough to put down a question to discover how many of their colleagues were regu-
Pic: ©Joseph Doyle
View from the Hill larly claiming this. Or more pertinent would it be possible to find one of them who never availed of this disgraceful allowance? Computer Woes
I needed to do something on the computer at home the other day. I discovered that the Missus had changed the password as a result of one of these warnings which we regularly get. I called out to her (Yeah she was in the kitchen). ‘What’s the new password for the computer’? She replied ‘Our anniversary date’. Shucks, snookered! FAir FAllout Councillor Paddy Kavanagh was quite correct in his response to the disgraceful condition which parts of Enniscorthy were left in by stallholders after a recent fair. His comment that these people come to town, do business, take the money, run, and leave a mas-
sive cleanup bill to the local ratepayers is spot on. I note now that the Enniscorthy District Council is to discuss this matter and hopefully Councillor Kavanagh will be fully supported on this. In the meantime we all can play our part in this regard by simply refusing to purchase anything whatsoever from these people who roll into town on good days and then disappear again. We should support local shops and businesses who employ local people, pay local rates, support local causes and keep money in town and are here to service us every day of the year. That’s how simple this is. stAmps It’s hard to believe that An Post has increased the price of the ordinary stamp to 68c. Where are they going with this? In this age of email and other means of communication one would think that An Post would be offering special deals to encourage people to use the service rather than driving customers away. However, it’s my belief that the real purpose of this increase is that An Post wants to get rid of the postal delivery service or at least significantly reduce it. This service is the most expensive part of their operations and in recent years An Post has become more of a retail bank than
a postal service. You can now transact almost any business at the counter (and very efficiently in Enniscorthy I might add) which makes the delivery operation less important. In a few years time we will see the postman or postwoman only once a week or so, particularly in rural districts. This, if it happens, will remove another crucial lifeline to many of the more isolated areas as the visit of the postman or postwoman is the only link with the outside world for a lot of older rural dwellers. It will also cause the loss of employment for our postal staff who through rain, hail, ice and snow get through with the post. Our public representatives would need to watch this one and call halt before it goes too far. r.t.e. AgAin Speaking of R.T.E. did anyone ever see a job at the station advertised? I know I never have. Maybe I look in the wrong place. It seems to me that everyone in the station is either there for many years or is related to someone who is there for many years. Maybe I’m wrong but I would certainly like to see more information circulated in relation to vacancies at the station. After all we licence payers are contributing significantly to keep it broadcasting and paying for all the jobs there. n

NEW ROSS… liBrAry reoPenS new ross library opened again on monday, 30th June 2014, after a 5 week closure for repairs. “everyone has been working flat-out and a massive amount has been achieved”, said local librarian, trish keenan. “now, the library is fresh and beautiful again. We are excited to see how people respond to the changes we have made for them”. New furniture and a colour scheme of greys, greens and turquoise create a lively first impact. There’s lots of new stock to borrow, including DVDs for the first time in New Ross library. The children’s area is bigger and easier to use. Comfortable seating helps families use the library well for leisure and learning as well as quiet chats. Public access computers are increased from 6 to 10, laid out to support group as well as individual work. There are more study spaces. With Wi-Fi, learners use their own devices to access electronic resources. New Ross people have always supported library events well. In the past, making space for numbers had been a challenge. Now, blocks of shelves are on wheels so staff will shift the
library around for big community gatherings. An ambitious programme of activities for autumn/winter 2014 is in place. Immediately self-service may intrigue visitors. It is in Wexford town and Gorey libraries already. The renovation created the opportunity to bring New Ross up-to-date. Self-service takes the library staff out from behind reception desks onto the library floor to help readers, initially with the new way of using the library as well as to help with their information enquiries. “Our users will take to self-service like ducks to water”, said Trish. “It’s very easy and we are beside them all the way until they are confident with the various choices they can make. Colleagues in other libraries say most people pick it up very quickly and this means library staff can concentrate on helping with enquiries and research, a part of our services that has been less obvious maybe but is most important”. Membership and all public library services throughout County Wexford are free. New Ross Library, in Barrack Lane, tel: 051 421 877, is open 6 days a week and until 8:30 pm on Tuesdays. n

Her onstage husband, Peron, will be played by Kevin Reade, who won the AIMS Best Comedian award, for playing Roger in the SMTMS production of “The Producers” in 2012. Another AIMS award winner that year was Keith Flanagan, who won Best Supporting Actor, for playing Franz in the same production. Keith is delighted to play the role of Ché in Evita, who will narrate the story through fine voice. Declan Taylor will play the role of Augustine Magaldi. Declan is delighted to return to the society that welcomed him so well last year. Ashley Doran, well known to the society at this stage, will play the role of Peron’s Mistress. This will be Ashley’s third role with SMTMS. Although Evita will only be the 7th musical by St. Michael’s Theatre Musical Society, in this short lifespan the society has already won Best Overall Show

New optimism! despite the disappointing Allireland Hurling Quarter-Final loss to limerick, Conor mcgrath still sees plenty of signs for optimism. Hurling in Co. Wexford appears to be on the rise once again. Wexford’s recent successes in both the Leinster Under 21 Hurling Championship and the All-Ireland Senior Hurling Championship qualifiers, have raised the level of expectations and is a welcome lift to the county as a whole. The Under 21s faced Dublin in Parnell Park on the evening of Wednesday, 9th of July, where they sealed the status of back-
to-back Leinster Under 21 Hurling Champions while the senior team battled its way to the Quarter Finals of the AllIreland Hurling Championship, following two heart-stopping games against Clare and a three point win over Waterford in Nowlan Park, Kilkenny, with all games being sell-outs. Wexford were matched up against Clare in the first round of the All-Ireland Qualifiers in Ennis, where after an exhilarating game that went to extratime, neither team could come out on top. The replay a week later in Wexford Park also turned out to be a nail-biting

www.slaneynews.com affair that once again went to extra-time. However substitute Jack Guiney from Rathnure was to be the match winner as he scored the final three points to see Wexford dethrone t h e re i g n i n g A l l - I re l a n d Champions. Wexford also ran out three point victors over Waterford on a scoreline of 315 to 2-15. As always the Wexford supporters travelled in huge numbers to Ennis, Kilkenny and Thurles, and also turned out in force in Wexford Park. It appears as though the long serving, loyal supporters of our county are finally getting the results they deserve for their dedication and the money they’ve spent. neW Road saFety MeasuRes A number of changes to the rules for learner and novice drivers came into effect on 1st August to reduce the number of collisions among these drivers, particularly in the high-risk 17-24 year old category. An “N” plate has been introduced and must be displayed by newly qualified drivers for two years after passing their test or else face a fine and penalty points if found not complying. The new rules for novice drivers apply to those who receive their first full licence
on or after 1st August 2014. A lower threshold of seven penalty points will lead to disqualification from driving for learner and novice drivers who were granted their first learner permit on or after 1st August 2014. A fully qualified driver needs to accumulate twelve points before being disqualified. There is no requirement for novice drivers to have an accompanying driver – this is still only the case for learner drivers. However, a novice driver may not act as an accompanying driver
for someone who holds a learner permit The limit for alcohol in the blood will be 20mg for learner and novice drivers instead of 50mg for fully licenced drivers. In other changes, offences such as speeding, not wearing a seatbelt and using a mobile phone while driving will now carry three penalty points instead of two. It’s surprising how many people are still using mobile phones while driving despite the threat of penalty points and fines, and the obvious
dangers of attempting to text or have a phone conversation while driving. According to research there is a four fold increase in the risk of having an accident when using a mobile phone. It’s always heartbreaking to hear the family of those killed in a car accident speak about their loss and the circumstances surrounding their loved one’s death. While there are many factors that cause accidents on our roads, please don’t let sending a text be one of them. n
Fiat 500L MPW RevieW by Caroline Kidd the Fiat multipla of the late 1990s was a bit of an ugly duckling but no one could deny that Fiat were innovative and bold in their decision to create a people carrier with three seats up front to match three in the back. That meant that the overall length of the MPV was kept to a minimum and without an extra row of seats the boot was big. But the downside was that extra width made it more awkward to manoeuvre. Fiat’s latest MPV, the 500L MPW, sticks to a more conventional layout. It’s a very comfortable five seater and with two fold away seats in the boot, it can be quickly turned into a seven seater should the need arise. Fiat says that the 500L MPW is the most compact 5+2 seat people carrier in its segment. It certainly feels like this when driving it and the good visibility from what seems like acres of glass all round makes it easy to manoeuvre and park. The addition of a button on the dash that you can press for super light steering makes driving around town or parking feel like you are in a car half this size.
Fiat 500L MPW
The Fiat 500L MPW is not as much of an oddball to look at as the Multipla. It has the same front and large round headlamps as the smaller 500L, but to accommodate the extra two seats it has gained some length and lost a little of the style. I think you could call the look “distinct” but it’s up to you to decide whether you like it or not! It still has that sense of fun about it that you find with a Fiat and inside is no different. There is lots of head and leg room and it feels more like a living room inside. The Lounge model I was driving had a plush feel with soft, suede-trimmed seats and a panoramic glass roof that
opens fitted as standard. It’s an easy car to drive and all the switches and dials are easy to read and use. In the back there are little fold away tables. It’s a very family oriented car. On the road, the Fiat 500L is very comfortable and rides very well for an MPV. The handling is good too but the car does roll a bit in the corners. The only thing I disliked was the lack of power in the 1.3 litre diesel engine fitted to the test car. It just feels a little bit under pressure in a car of this size and it is noisy when you accelerate it hard. Once you get it up to cruising speeds it’s fine. It’s also economical offering up to 67mpg. Family buyers will like to
know that in five seat format with the extra seats folded into the floor there is a massive 638 litres of boot space. The boot has a very practical square shape and handy flat sill for loading it up. The two extra seats are only suitable for small children and don’t have ISOFIX fittings but that is quite standard across this segment. And with the two extra seats in place there is just enough room in the boot for a small bag or two. The Fiat 500L MPW has a good level of standard equipment and all Fiats now come with a five year warranty. Fiat has definitely learnt something from the Multipla but thankfully this time space efficiency has been matched with much more charm. Thank you to Fiat Ireland for providing the car for review. Model tested: Fiat 500L MPW Lounge. Price: €25,875 (Range starts at €23,550). Engine: 1.3 litre MultiJet, four cylinder turbo diesel. Power: 85bhp. 0-100km/h: 15.4 seconds. Economy: 67.3mpg (4.2l/100km). CO2 emissions: 110g/km. Tax band: A3 (€190 per year). n

Star zonE B & the Honeyboy played to a small crowd in Holohans, enniscorthy, on the 4th of July which is American independence day. they were playing as part of the We dig roots night in enniscorthy which is organised by eamonn doyle. this is always a good night with some great bands on offer. Aileen Mythen and her husband Kieran (KJ) are one of the best blues two-pieces around. Aileen sang every note perfectly and is a great songstress. I put her up there with Luan Parle and Patsy Cline. She has a beautiful voice and is a very pleasant young lady. She would also be a great solo performer. This two-piece is good and should be on this year’s Blackstairs Blues lineup, if not then the committee should look at booking them. I’m not criticising the Blues committee but you should give more local bands a shot. I think it’s been ten or twelve years since B & The Honeyboy performed last at the Blues Festival. It was in Legends and they were a four-piece back then. Well done B and Kieran, they write most of their own songs and are very easy listening. B & The Honeyboy have three cds to their name and are well worth a listen. Catch them at a venue near you soon. And remember, if We Dig Roots is to survive and continue to bring top quality music to Enniscorthy then it needs more support from the people of Enniscorthy. – Joseph Doyle

HIStory on our DoorStEp Gunfire signalled the start of this year’s re-enactment of the Battle of Vinegar Hill which took place in Enniscorthy over the weekend of 2nd and 3rd August with the crown force’s redcoats advancing up the Duffry from Pig Market Hill and the rebels advancing from the Duffry Gate outside Joe Doyle’s – this was the case in 1798 with the red-
coats firing at the rebels from the Pig Market Hill and the rebels returning fire before this both groups marched down the Duffry with the redcoats marching down the Pig Market Hill first. Thankfully the rain on Saturday didn’t stop proceedings and I don’t think it stopped proceedings in 1798 either! – Joseph Doyle

FIRST WEXFORD TEAM TO SWIM THE ENGLISH CHANNEL A team of Wexford swimmers successfully completed the english Channel crossing on tuesday, 8th July, in a fantastic time of 12 hours 31 mins! they were the first relay team from Wexford to do so when they landed on the sweet spot under the White House at Cap gris nez, France. Well done to the six swimmers – eamonn, enda, Peter, Saskia, denise and James!
The sequence of swimmers was Eamonn, Enda, Peter, Saskia, Denise, James. They followed that sequence throughout with each swimmer swimming for 1 hour, then waiting 5 hours, then he/she going again. They started swimming about 3am so two of the swimmers actually swam in the dark! See www.wexmseaswim.com/ channel.php for more info on this remarkable achievement.

run at The Abbey Theatre earlier in the year. Sive occupies a special place in the history of Irish theatre as does the work of John B. Keane. The themes of rural isolation, caring for family members with dementia, greed and social status are still as relevant today as they were when the play, famously rejected by the Abbey
Theatre initially, was first performed by Listowel Drama Group in 1959 at the National Theatre. Beautiful young Sive lives with her aunt and uncle in rural Kerry. Seán Dóta, an elderly farmer, offers the local match-maker a large sum for her hand in marriage. Will this be too much for her aunt and uncle to resist? Don’t miss this chance to rediscover this dark, powerful story of greed and passion. being without Finish – an exhibition of new work by contemporary irish artist Anne Hendrick is running from 21st July – 30th August 2014 in Wexford Arts Centre. Having exhibited extensively throughout Ireland and abroad, Anne explores feelings of optimism counter-balanced by disenchantment through flattened perspectives and unconventional dimensions, with the moon acting as the omnipresent muse. Working in the medium of paint, textiles and video installation, Anne’s technique is one that is produced slowly and meditatively, seducing with silky and textured surfaces in an attempt to pro-
duce images that almost transcend their object hood. Artist and curator, Anne Hendrick, was born in Wexford and graduated from the National College of Art and Design with a joint BFA in Painting and History of Art in 2006. Since then, she has exhibited in Temple Bar Gallery & Studios, the Royal Hibernian Academy, Monster Truck and Roscommon Arts Centre as well as the UK, Iceland and Barcelona. The Monck Street Cafe event started at 7.30pm with local and visiting poets and poetry fans mingling before the reading started at 8.00pm with MC Denis Collins. The evening included an open mic session on the theme of painting (to celebrate the Art in the Open Festival), and any poet or reader was welcome to contribute by just signing in at the start of the evening. Two special guest poets from County Wicklow, Shirley McClure and Jane Clarke, participated at this reading. n

Local author in major signing event the first ever international dublin Authors Signing event was held in the Shelbourne Hotel on Wednesday 11th July and Wexford author Carmel Harrington was invited to attend. A major honour and achievement for Carmel, who has just recently launched her second book the life you left during the Wexford literary FoCAl Festival, to be up there with renowned international authors like Sylvia day and rebecca donovan. The event which is staged in many cities around the world was a first for Dublin and attracted large audiences from Ireland, Northern Ireland, Scotland, England, France, Italy and the USA and was an outstanding success with fans queuing to see and talk to their favourite authors and get their autographs on books, on kindles and on elaborately decorated scrapbooks. With approximately 45 authors from around the world and only a handful from Ireland it was quite something for We x f o rd ’ s o w n C a r m e l Harrington not just to be
included but to be extremely popular on the day with a constant stream of fans stopping to get her autograph and have their photograph taken with her – indeed Carmel was quite the pop star at one stage even autographing t-shirts to her amusement. I was intrigued firstly with the number of book lovers queuing to gain access to their favourite authors, secondly with the distance some of them had travelled to attend and thirdly with their unbridled passion for their idols and their work. The most ornate scrapbooks and kindles were autographed with special pens and fans could barely contain themselves as they stood beside the literary icons for photographs. I of course did my bit for the Slaney News taking the shots and chatting with the authors. I was fascinated at the amount of romantic erotica in evidence. I came across the very wealthy and very popular southern Californian Sylvia Day who I am told writes “50 Shades of Grey only with a story line” – well done Sylvia that would cer-

tainly encourage me to take a look as I got bored with 50 Shades after reading about 50 pages of repetition and no story – sorry E.L. James but that is my opinion! They did try to get E.L. James for the Dublin event you know but the timing didn’t suit her – ah well maybe next year – that would certainly up the male attendance sheet I bet. Olivia Cunning – now there’s a name – writes erotic romance that rocks and with titles like Touch Me, Take Me, Try Me, Tempt Me, I’m not surprised. Another American author writing about the love tangles of rock bands is Caitlin Morgan Stunich from Oregon who puts her talents to use writing erotic romance about Bikers, Bad Boys and Rock Stars, whilst just down from that Jessica Sorensen, all the way from Idaho writes contemporary adult romance about angels and vampires and has 32 books published. These ladies can write! Raine Miller gave up teaching after 20 years to write hist o r i c a l ro m a n c e a n d h e r

New Slaney Writing… Local writer Mary CottEr was totally shocked about the plane that was brought down in The Ukraine and penned the following piece on 18th July…
reQuiem At 62 you feel Quite hardened to the world. Tales of woe abound, Of babies died too soon, Murder, drugs and all the implications. Our mother struck with Parkinsons, Our father lost in that hell Some people call Dementia. We have had our hearts broken, More than once. The world is not a safe place Despite what we may see.
Blackstone Affair series includes titles like Naked, All In, Eyes Wide Open and Rare Precious Things. Kimberly Knight, another fabulous appellation, hails from California and tells me that her Hello series is contemporary spicy romance. It’s all hot, hot, hot and that appears to be what us, the readers, are after. I chat to Lisa J. Hobman f ro m S c o t l a n d w h o d o e s romance with a Scotish twist and has three books published in the last threeyears with another four ready to go – this is hard work me thinks and a really tough sell – it’s big business and a most competitive market. Lynn Marie Hulsman, a romantic novelist from New York, is also a stand-up comic (a really tough job for a lady) and co-owner of an Improv Theatre. I bought her book Christmas at Thornton Hall and am really looking forward to reading it. Irish author, Aoife Brennan, has done the Cougar Diaries Trilogy which she says is her attempt at sexing up the recession being a mixture of comic,
The River Slaney Tumbles over stones Old stones, old way. The barley field is golden Now, All those weeks of sunshine Have toasted it and tested it. It’s a sight to behold. They have shot a plane down In another barley field. Armageddon loose again, People fall like snow Just an ordinary Thursday. It takes me by surprise, Old battle-hardened me. That I am shocked and shaken No one should die like this. Scorched earth and grain.
What stays the Almighty’s hand? That we who hate so much, And plan so much To kill each other And to hell with consequences. There is peace in Ballycarney, It falls just as the poet said, Rolls off Tincurrry Hill, Falls on Slaney water, We are washed in a holy peace. One faraway field, Scattered with debris, The War to end All Wars, Still rages. Pray for the souls. Amen. n

feminist, activist erotica – wow and only available on Kindle – I’ve got to get myself one especially now look at what I might be missing! Abby Green from Harolds Cross has written a staggering 38 novellas for Harlequin and I make a donation and take her latest – When the Silver Breaks the Rules – this girl obviously has a formula, and it is obviously one that works. Abby (and that isn’t her real name) was an Assistant Director on films like
Michael Collins and has given up the day job to write romance! Who said ‘Romantic Ireland’s dead and gone – it’s with O’Leary in the grave’. Romance is alive and well in Ireland indeed all over the world – today’s version probably has that extra little bit of spice added but it’s basically the same tale as Adam and Eve – Boy Meets Girl – and the rest is history or should that be erotica! – Maria nolan

A poem concerning 1916 and the horror of the troubles
by Donal Cullen
Nights translucent air currents, calm breezes, some talented zephyr zipping across barely fields, the angel of night burning with desire, the angel of night lost without hope. As I jiggled the rear view mirror by jolt, the road behind lined with lifeless bodies. n
People to see, Things to do, Places to go. What to do, On the run. But who to see, Maybe it’s me.

A fleeing glance, not enough You are all too near And yet so far My lady in black in the little white car. People to see, And what to do. My end is near The call of the wild Will carry me home To that place above In my little white car. n
