comment I would like to wish Jacqui Hynes the very best of luck as she leaves her role as manager of the 1798 Centre and Enniscorthy Castle and moves on to pastures new. Jacqui has been four years in the job coinciding with when the Slaney News began and in that time she has been a wonderful asset to the town and a joy for us in the Slaney News to deal with on a regular basis. Jacqui will be around until the end of December to give Santa some help in Enniscorthy Castle so if you spot her there, or anywhere else, make sure to wish her well. While the recruitment process is underway, the Castle and 1798 Centre are in very safe hands with Rory O’Connor at the helm. As an “Eastsider” I’m glad to see a new public forum on Facebook for the residents of Enniscorthy who live east of the river Slaney. So fellow Eastsiders check out “Enniscorthy Eastside” and use it to share news (not gossip!), raise issues or highlight upcoming events. Well done Eamonn Doyle for giving a voice to the often forgotten!!! – Frank Corcoran

Enniscorthy Credit Union Free Scholarship Draw Enniscorthy Credit Union has always been to the forefront when it comes to the needs of the community; in particular the financial needs and interests of the younger members of our c o m m u n i t y. O n 11 t h o f November Enniscorthy Credit Union Ltd again made one of their large annual contributions to those needs when they held their annual free scholarship draws. Enniscorthy Credit Union Ltd offered two scholarship draws: – PLC Scholarship offered €1,000 for First prize and €500 for Second prize. – Third Level Scholarship offered First prize €1,500 per annum for three years subject to successfully completing examinations, Second prize was €1,000 once-off and 4 once-off cash prizes of €500. Over 100 parents, students and friends of students who have recently started college attended in the hope that they would be one of the lucky winners. The scholarship draw has been taking place since 1994 with over €100,000 in total being awarded towards the education of young people in our community since the scholarship began. Last year Enniscorthy joined the growing number of towns, such as Dungarvan, Wexford and New Ross, who are taking control of their own local economies in these trying times by launching a Gift Voucher Scheme. Three of our local institutions joined forces to bring about this innovative scheme; the Chamber of Commerce, the Credit Union and the Business Association. By having one voucher which can be used in different businesses and services across the town, it is helping to keep our town financially strong and is safe-guarding jobs. Since the start of the scheme, just one year ago, the people of Enniscorthy have purchased €30,000 worth proving that they have been accepted and are trusted here. This year it is hoped to sell even more as the range of services available with the vouchers has expanded to include

Tech Tip by Sam power
GeT iT Fixed enniScorThy
free up tons of Disk space Last year, Microsoft released a Windows 7 update that most people still don't know about. It adds a new option in the Disk Cleanup tool called Windows Update Cleanup. With it, you can free up several gigabytes of hard drive space from the bloated Windows Updates folder. Windows Updates can be terrible space hogs. Windows saves every security update and hotfix – even if they're superseded by new updates – in the WinSxS directory. You can't just manually delete everything in that folder, because some files are needed just in case a system file gets corrupted or you need to roll back a Windows Update.
(Note: Windows Update Cleanup is included in Windows 8.1.) Once you have it installed, run Disk Cleanup (click start, type disk cleanup in the search box) and click the "Clean up system files" button to find the new Windows Update Cleanup option. Note that running this cleanup will prevent you from uninstalling any updates you have currently applied,
but you can manually download and install previous update versions if you ever need to rollback. As ever if you have queries about this article or you’d like me to talk about a tech issue that interests or concerns you in a future article, then pop me an email at sam@getitfixed.ie, or you can phone the shop on 053 9238544. n
So that's where this new Windows Update comes in. The update, called KB 2852386, adds the ability to cleanup all the obsolete updates in the WinSxS folder. It was a "recommended" update but not "critical," so you might not have installed it yet. You can either do a Windows Update to download it (click start, all programs, windows update) or head to the Knowledge Base article to grab it from there.

Enniscorthy Chamber members and well-wishers at the recent Gala Dinner at the Riverside Park Hotel
Enniscorthy Chamber celebrated 25 years of business, enterprise and tourism achievements with a Gala Ball at the Riverside Park Hotel on Friday 28th Nov. Special guest speaker for the occasion was former European President, journalist and RTE presenter Pat Cox who was introduced by Mr. Jimmy Gahan who delighted the very large attendance with his effervescence and indomitable wit throughout the excellent event. There were speeches from Chairperson of the Enniscorthy Municipal District, Barbara Anne Murphy, and Enniscorthy native Mark Redmond, Chief Executive of the American Chamber of Commerce, Ireland – the representative body for US multinational companies in this country. Mr. Redmond said that he was thrilled to be invited to the event and to be in the Riverside Park Hotel considering he was born just a couple of yards from the hotel and his home was called Riverside. Mark went on to say that he was very enthusiastic about the way Enniscorthy was moving, and he would be delighted to help out in any way he could.
Several presentations were made on the night to founding, former and present members with very special mention for Mr. Sam McCauley and Mr. Pat Kickham the original instigators of the Chamber, with Jimmy Gahan calling on former politician and radio presenter Ian Yates to do the needful describing him as the “best Taoiseach that Ireland never had”. Many former Town Clerks, County Managers and Town Council Chairmen were among t h e a u d i e n c e , a n d w e re thanked and applauded for their work over the years in the Enniscorthy area. Chamber President Michael Bennett made presentations to Chairperson Barbara Anne Murphy and County Manager Tom Enright. In his address he thanked the organising committee for their trojan efforts making the event a success particularly Chamber Secretary Margot Hogan and Chamber member Maree Lyng and commended both ladies for their work ethic and wonderful attention to detail. Flower presentations were also made to Mrs. Cox and Mrs. Redmond and to Jacqui Hynes who was thanked for
all her work at the Castle and the 1798 Centre and in particular on the Vinegar Hill Reenactment weekend. All of the speakers complimented the Riverside Park Hotel for the excellent repas of Mille Feuille of Millstream Smoked Salmon and Citrus Rosslare Crab Meat followed by Cream of Winter Vegetable Soup, followed by Kearns Fruit Farm Strawberry Sorbet and a main course of Martin Doyle & Sons Striploin of Beef or oven baked Atlantis Fresh Kilmore Quay Cod with a Pesto and Herb Crust followed by freshly baked Apple & Kearns Blackberry Crumble with Vanilla Ice Cream – a totally mouthwatering meal using local produce. There was a Goodie Bag for everyone in the audience and when the formalities were dispensed with they were treated to the energetic and colourful music and dance of rock and roll, and the ‘bould’ Diarmuid McMurrough himself even dropped in to partake of the entertainment. All in all a most enjoyable event so well done Enniscorthy Chamber and may the next 25 years be even more eventful. – Maria Nolan
The newly formed Enniscorthy Re-enactment Committee.
Re-enactors have been part of the Enniscorthy landscape for the past couple of years under the careful guidance of Ray Murphy, and have been part of many of our St. Patrick’s Day Parades along with other events like Bastille Day in 1996 and Vinegar Hill Day in 1998 when 3,000 Pikemen from around the county formed at Bellefield GAA Grounds and marched through the town and on to the hill. In recent times they have also been part of the 1798 Reenactment Rebellion each August Bank Holiday weekend. So it is high time for them to officially constitute themselves and become an established and recognisable body on the community scene. With this in mind, and in light of expanding and enhancing what has become a wonderful spectacle and a major tourist attraction with unlimited potential for the town, and with 1916 commemora-
tions looming, a meeting was held at Holohans on Thursday 6th Nov. The following were elected to the newly formed Enniscorthy Re-enactment Committee:- Chairman Ray Murphy, Vice Chair Niall Holohan, Secretary Rory O`Connor, Assistant Secretary Maria Nolan, Treasurer Peter Freeman, PRO Maria Nolan/Niall Holohan, Seamus Corrigan, Tim Corrigan, Tom Boland, Margaret O`Neill, Bridget Murphy, Paul Murphy, Graham Cadogan, and Ian Kidd. We are open to new members and want to get as many people as possible involved. We envisage our Re-enactors bringing a new dimension to our town and our festivals. And there are no limitations! Of course Enniscorthy is synonymous with redcoats and pikemen but wouldn`t it be nice for visitors to the town to come across a volunteer or two outside the Athenaeum, or indeed Maurice de
Prendergast guarding the Castle or Anna Leon Owens busily descending Weafer Street or Eileen Gray or Marconi or… or… the list goes on and on. Tourists love to have their photographs taken with people dressed in period costume a n d t h e La di e s o f C o b h Animation have perfected the exercise. Dressed exquisitely in Titanic period they meet the cruiseliners that dock in Cobh and so successful have they been that they are now invited to Afternoon Tea with the captains on board the liners. And speaking of cruiseships – there is one due to dock in Rosslare next August – now there’s a thought – if we can’t bring them to Enniscorthy let’s bring Enniscorthy to them! And what is Enniscorthy best known for? You got it… pikemen and redcoats. Any volunteers? – Maria Nolan

Athenaeum & Autism St Senan’s Primary School Autism Unit and Enniscorthy Athenaeum have joined forces to get 2015 off to a sweet and invigorating start and close 2014 with a worthy project. Watch out as tickets go on sale shortly for the ‘Hundreds and Thousand Raffle’, which is being run for the dual purpose of raising money for the state-of-the-art Autism unit in St Senan’s P.S. and to help get the Athenaeum open for enjoyment by people from both sides of the river. Organiser and enthusiastic promoter, Paddy Byrne, director of Enniscorthy Athenaeum Ltd, pays sincere tribute to the existing autism unit in St. Senan’s which has been doing remarkable work for the last decade and which is making a huge difference to the lives, life skills and happiness of the students and their families and deserves continued support.

The first class in St. Senan’s P.S. Autism Unit was opened in 2004 with only two pupils; now there are twenty three on the roll. Their needs are assessed by a Special Education Needs assessor, each child has an individual Educational Plan and the children are taught using a differentiated curriculum which caters for their particular learning style. They have access to a Speech and Language Therapist who devises and delivers individual programmes and also advises parents and staff. Over the last number of years, the families of the children have raised funds to purchase all the equipment for a fullyequipped Occupational Therapy Room and Sensory Room, and a most recent addition, the school now boasts a Sensory Garden in which the children chose plants and vegetables with sensory qualities i.e. plants with interesting textures, colours, scents,

and vegetables which the children like to eat. Ms. Oona Rackard, school Principal, has outlined the school’s objective to provide the best possible and most suitable education for children with autism in comfort and safety. All children in the unit are assigned to a mainstream class, the level of integration varying according to the individual needs of the child. T h e d i re c t o r s o f t h e Athenaeum, some having personal experience of the challenges that sending a child with autism through the educational system can present, were very positive when Paddy Byrne proposed the idea of a fundraiser that the Athenaeum could join with to help both organisations. It is hoped that in the not too distant future, perhaps the school could have concerts or activities in the old town hall, in which all the children from all classes from all schools in the town could participate. The Athenaeum was granted planning permission for the refurbishment, and is hopeful that the state coffers allotted for the centenary of 1916 Rising will realise the necessary funding to make sure the Enniscorthy GPO is open for business for all commemorations. The top prize in the ‘Hundreds and Thousand’ raffle is €1,000 with a further four prizes of €100. The tickets are a mere €2 each with a book of six only €5. The draw will be made by Athenaeum Patron and national treasure, RTE broadcaster Donncha Ó Dúlaing, in Enniscorthy Castle on 15th January 2015 at 11am. Make that date the first in your new diary. Tickets available from the school, the directors of the Athenaeum or telephone 087 2637178 and 087 9981801. n

When you’ve got your tree home you need to position it. Be mindful to keep the delicate tree out of direct heat, i.e. not by a radiator or fire. If you’re going to put it in the corner, up against a wall, you can then trim the branches so it can fit a little further in and look nice and snug. This also means you don’t have to decorate that side of the tree and so you can use your spare decorations around the room.

Wishing all my constituents a very Happy Christmas and a peaceful New year
Wexford Spiegeltent Festival. The role of the Welcome Ambassadors is to be streetbased friendly faces of Wexford aiming to meet and greet visitors and provide local knowledge and useful information. The idea of local, friendly faces on the street greeting visitors (and locals) and assisting them with information is one that was attempted by the Enniscorthy Business Association (EBA) this time last year as they tried to get a team of volunteers together based around an information booth in the Market Square. The idea received some support from the public but not enough committed volunteers came on board to implement a meaningful rota. This year, the EBA is again planning an information booth with volunteers providing information every weekend on all that is happening in Enniscorthy this December. And the signs are good with a number of the Delightful Dollies group as well as several individual volunteers offering their time. If you or anybody you know would like to volunteer please contact the Slaney News on 087-2403310 as soon as possible. The EBA would like to thank Cyril Wheelock for kindly offering the use of a booth for the information service. n
Start with your lights at the top and wind them down and around the tree; position some by the trunk and some further out on the branches, this will create a soft glow and reduce the chance of dark patches.
STEP 2. DECORATiNG
1. Refresh the tree by making a straight cut, taking one inch off the butt and immediately place in water. This will improve water uptake. 2. Place the tree in a stand that can hold at least 5 litres of water.

Believe it or not your Real Christmas Tree requires water. This will help in keeping the tree fresh and reduces the fall of needles from it.
Advice & hints from your locAl hArdwAre teAm
There are no real rules when adding baubles and decorations to a tree – it’s your personal taste and a great excuse to get into the Christmas spirit and have some fun.
Try to get a good mix of large and small baubles and decorations and mix them up to fill gaps. If your ornaments are particularly heavy, hang them from the middle or back of the branch, where they connect to the trunk; these are more sturdy than if you hang on the ends.
STEP 3. FiNiSHiNG TOUCHES Don’t forget finishing touches when adding to your tree; add personalised decorations that you or the kids would have made, childhood favourites or argue amongst yourselves about whether to include tinsel or not; either way, when you’re finished, the tree will stand pride of place and create a sense that Christmas has well and truly arrived.
Having a tree perfectly lit adds a cosy, warm and inviting ambience to the room but ensure you light it properly for it to shine to its full potential.
Pop a skirt over your stand so your tree is dressed head to toe, and then you’re ready for the main attraction – an angel, a star or something meaningful to you – pop it on top.
Whether you’ve bought new lights or just grabbed them from the attic, always lay them out on the floor first, switch them on and check they are all working. When decorating a tree, there is nothing more miserable than spending your time carefully wrapping lights around it, to then realise some of the bulbs have blown.
And that’s it, your tree is done. Merry Christmas and a Prosperous New Year from all at Donohoes Hardware.

Donal meets Christy I remember sitting in a car with Christy Doyle way back in 1975 and he showing me how to play Me and Bobby McGee on guitar. He knew all the chords and I was amazed as to how my guitar sounded in another’s hands. I’m glad that Christy decided to put that track on his new CD. So here we are – Christy’s album is now out and I think it may be some kind of a gem. I’ve heard it and seen Christy do the stuff live at the Riverside Park Hotel a while back. I do like this CD. Christy is very down to earth and sincere and with his daughter Alison Doyle on backing vocals they send your emotions on high when I see them on stage – the hair standing on the back of my red neck. The vocals are magic – was I on the prairie out west, yes I was, a lonesome cowboy and his girl. Christy’s CD is now out so if you’re looking for a Christmas present – this is a must, not just a stocking filler but the present itself. Titled The Range of Life the album has 14 crackers of good time country songs. I dare you to give it a listen, you won’t be disappointed. Christy gives you the feel good factor. Christy recently launched the CD in Enniscorthy’s Riverside Park Hotel and to my surprise there was a full

Track 11: Sunday Morning Coming Down. Track 12: Who Says You Can’t Have It All. Track 13: The Rose (with Alison Doyle). Track 14: Heroes and Friends. The Rose is a special track, I beg you to give this one a listen because it will make you love country songs all over again.
Doyle is a longtime friend of mine. I spoke to Michael Parkinson a while back and he told me that he and Paul McCartney go way back, well folks me and Christy go way back to the 1960s. Christy Doyle’s CD is out now. Produced by Christy Doyle. Engineered by Ivan Levingstone. Recorded at John Street Studios. Enquiries: 0874125929. Good luck to Christy and the lovely Alison. The vocals are heavenly. – Donal Cullen A poem by Christy Doyle: DuST Dust on boots, And cattle’s backs, And tractors’ wheels, And railroad tracks. On roadside plants, Unused paths, Milk cow tracks, Fairy raths. Kitchen floor, Walls and doors, The Dyson waiting, For to go. Rathnure Panto rehearsals.
Rathnure Panto – a brand new story! Above: Reegan and Donal Kelly who visited Santa in Kilcannon on 29th November. Below L-R: Fred and Sam Devereux, Mrs Claus and Harry Devereux, in Santa’s Village, Kilcannon, on 29th November.
Christmas is only weeks away and that can only mean one thing – the Rathnure Panto is back! Now entering its 20th year, the Pantos and Musicals under the Blackstairs mountains have been packing the audiences in. And this Christmas, a brand new story is brewing! John Reilly and Liam Sharkey are embarking on their 10th original panto script called The Magic Wand: A "Wand"erous Story! It all begins in a small village where Herbert, an archaeologist, unearths what seems to be the legendary Magic Wand which, up to now, was only thought to be a fairytale
story. When a mysterious old lady spots the report on the news, she rings Herbert to say that she knows more about the wand than most. When they get talking, Rose tells the story of her childhood, where magical nanny Mary Poppins once appeared and told them a fantasic story about The Magic Wand where, in the Kingdom of Arondale at the marriage of Elsa and Queen Marcus, the evil Faganis appears to snatch the magic wand from Fairy SparkleDrop, the most powerful fairy. To stop him, the wand is snapped in half and spread across the kingdom. And so, the race begins to retrieve the
wand, with Ana and Elsa, along with Donkey and Princess Fiona, and a very weird Tinkerbell heading off on their biggest adventure, and meeting a host of characters along the way! So is it all just a made-up story? What connections have the real world and the world of fairytales? And who will win the biggest battle of all in Arondale? The Box Office is now open on 053-9255429 or 087-0687801. This year's show runs from 12th-22nd December and tickets are selling fast. See ad below. Also check out their Facebook page for more details. Call now to reserve the best seats in the house! n

‘Darkness Into Light’ Joan freeman and pieta house held their first ever seminar at the hodson bay hotel, Athlone, on 8th november with representatives from all 39 venues around the country and one or two new ones coming together to dissect and analyse
all that went well or otherwise in 2014. Pieta House, established by Joan Freeman in 2006 to provide ‘somewhere to go’ for people having suicidal thoughts, now has 9 centres around the country and plans to open another 3 between now and

2016 in Donegal, Waterford and Westmeath. The 9 Centres have supported 11,000 people and delivered 30,000 counselling hours to date. Now that’s something to celebrate! A major source of funding for these centres – the Darkness Into Light 5K Dawn Walk – will be bigger and better than ever in 2015, the third time for the event to take place in Enniscorthy. Darkness Into Light is now a national brand with over 80,000 people taking part across the country last year and the organisers are looking forward to reaching 100,000 and beyond next May and we in Enniscorthy are already beginning to make plans for what we hope will be our biggest walk to date. So watch this space for further updates in the New Year. – Maria nolan
Ogra FF supports local business Shop-Support-buy-Local this Christmas is the call by ogra fianna fail in Wexford. ogra fianna fail in Wexford with the support of the fianna fail representatives in the constituency are encouraging people in the county to support local businesses this Christmas. According to Ogra Fianna Fail representative in Wexford – John Higgins: “It is important
to promote the value of shopping local and supporting small businesses within the local community.” Mr Higgins continued by saying: “It is widely accepted from a number of reports that small to medium size enterprises have suffered the greatest during the downturn of the economy and as a result of the growing strength of large retailers across Ireland
in recent years”. “Look at friends and family members and where they are working, you will notice nearly 90% of them are working in SME’s in the locality. Regardless of where you live in Co. Wexford it’s the local business or shop that is the lifeblood of the community and it is important that we support them this Christmas.” n
Sinn Fein councillor Fionntán Ó Súilleabháin has claimed that people are not going to fall for what he calls “the government’s three card trick on water charges". He was speaking at a packed Right2Water meeting which was held in Gorey’s Loch Garman Arms Hotel on 18th November. “Once water charges are in place
they will only go up. Now is our opportunity to get rid of water charges once and for all. That’s why we need the maximum possible turnout for protests in Co. Wexford and especially for the protest against water charges on December 10th to deliver home the message once and for all that water charges must be scrapped.”

Success story of your local Enterprise Centre over 200 jobs have been created through the tenants of enniscorthy enterprise & Technology Centre. Sonru, Taoglas, Chevron Training and 2cubed are amongst the successful start-ups that began in the centre and they have now progressed to moving into their own premises. Edward Hendrick founder of Sonru (an online automatic interview platform) came to the Centre seven years ago with a concept. The Centre worked with him to develop the business to where it is today, Sonru now employs 51 people. Dermot O’ Shea and Ronan Quinlan attended a Start Your Own Business course in the Enterprise Centre in 2004, they later founded Taoglas and set up an office in the Enterprise
Centre. It now employs over 50 people worldwide, with offices i n Ta i w a n , S a n D i e g o , Minneapolis and head office in Enniscorthy. Karl Fitzpatrick, co-founder of Chevron Training and presenter of ‘Business Matters’ on South East Radio attended a training programme in the Enterprise Centre where he saw an opportunity to set up a training business in renewable energy. Chevron Training employs 12 people full-time and up to 20 people contracted. Over its 12 years in existence more than 50 businesses have started in the Centre and have progressed to a stage where they can stand on their own feet. The Centre now has 20 businesses at different levels, some are at concept stage, researching their ideas and are
supported in a shared work space availing of our Hot Desk facilities. Some are at start-up stage and are seeking funds to grow their business. There are more established companies employing additional staff. The Enterprise Centre is an environment where businesses network and share ideas. The staff of the Enterprise Centre mentors and coaches these businesses, at no extra cost. Most people starting a business need help to secure funding, need to know how to go through the legal process of setting up a business and secure the best revenue model for the business. The Centre also provides business related training to help local companies. It has trained over 300 people in CPC for owner managers. This gave
them the statutory qualification to run their own haulage business. The Centre has an arrangement with Waterford Institute of Technology where it provides Level 6 modules from the Higher Certificate in Business Studies, taught as a night course. Setting up a business is a very lonely world for a person, therefore the Centre puts in place a nice canteen with an ambiance where people enjoy good coffee and enjoy a relaxed friendly atmosphere. The centre also arranges social events such as golf and nights out, which is a great way to enjoy a good lifestyle with a good life balance. The Centre has good broadband and has been integral in heightening the importance of broadband in the area, especially

for SME businesses. It has 50 mbps download speed and 12 mbps upload speed. The tenants have access to conference and meeting rooms, facilities that are normally offered by an Enterprise Centre unlike typical landlords. The Centre is inviting people that may have a business
idea to come to the Centre to investigate if the venture is viable or not. The Centre can also help existing businesses if they work from home and if they want a room to work in the Centre. If you know anybody interested contact John at 053 9237499 or email john@eetc.ie n

John A. Sinnott & Co achieves Gold Legal Standard The renowned enniscorthy based law firm, John A. Sinnott & Co. Solicitors, has recently been audited by The institute of Legal research and Standards and was successful in achieving a ‘gold’ Q6000 legal standards award. The Q6000 is an advanced practice, risk and quality management standard awarded to solicitors’ firms who have demonstrated exceptional levels of client, practice and risk management. John A. Sinnott & Co. excelled in all areas of the rigorous audit and achieved
an exceptional overall rating of 98%. This is the fifth consecutive year that the firm has been accredited by the Institute. John Murphy, Principal of the firm commented, ‘It is great to have our commitment to delivering a quality service acknowledged. This standard can only be achieved by ingraining an ethos of quality at every stage of every legal transaction and by an ongoing complete commitment from every member of staff. This ethos must be consistent, constant and natural; otherwise a grade of this
level cannot be achieved and it is a great credit to the staff here.’ Whatever service a client is seeking – from wills, family law and conveyancing to corporate law and employment law – they can be assured that a firm with this quality mark not just observes but exceeds best practice standards. Firms with the Q6000 accreditation rank among the highest quality law firms in Ireland. VET DIARY FOR DEC. with the Moyne Veterinary Clinic
This month, Joe Kavanagh expresses his gratitude for the animals in our lives.
This month we have taken in lots of new animals that found themselves homeless through no fault of their own. We have, as always, many cats and kittens looking for new homes. We also have two older dogs looking for homes, a black Labrador and a Springer Spaniel (see photos). Although we will continue to rehome during the
month of December, we remind people to avoid adopting or purchasing an animal on impulse. Our Christmas cards are currently on sale in local vets with all proceeds used to help animals in Enniscorthy and surrounding areas. We wish all of our dedicated volunteers and supporters a very happy and peaceful Christmas. n
Happy galloping at Bellefield
12 THiNGS i'M GRATEFuL TO THE ANiMALS FOR… I'm grateful for their company and companionship. I'm grateful for how they make me look at things in a different light when I look at things from their perspective. I'm grateful for my dogs for getting me out of bed in the morning on those days that it seems easier to spend that extra 5 minutes in bed! For the fun and laughter they bring by the "joi de vie" they share each day. For the way they make me realise that it's the simple things in life that are important. Best things in life are free!.... except vets’ fees! The kindness and innate wisdom these fellow creatures of this earth show us each day. The role models they provide for us, by realising when we trust everything will work out... it usually does! They don't buy groceries but always get fed. The youthful enthusiasm they greet us with each morning which is enough to make your day. For me, using the energy medicine, their stubborn ability to hold out an ailment until you discover the underlying and true cause of the problem, stretching you sometimes to the elastic limit! The people you meet, the wonderful characters that arrive to our door because of the common link, the animals. The wonderful ability of the animals to show us it's our hearts we should work from not our heads. They're the perfect role models. And to our customers, clients, and friends for the support, kindness, understanding and generosity throughout the year we are truly grateful. Wishing you a really magical Christmas and a wonderful sparkling New Year. n

bellefield was rockin’ on friday 7th nov as the annual rapparees/Starlights GAA fundraiser attracted a large crowd to the Clubhouse. Thanks to the hard work of Kathleen Miller and John Browne and to the generosity of our many sponsors and supporters this event has become one of the main sources of funding in our calendar year. No race night would be complete without the effervescent Mr. Spratt who adds his own special brand of humour and wit to the occasion. Our most sincere thanks to Club Sponsor Sam McCauley who provided Goodie Bags for everyone in the audience and indeed to all who sponsored races and bought horses. Your contribution to club finances in these difficult

View from the Hill tHe genie is out The recent protests against water charges have clearly astounded the political class. Little did they think that these protest rallies and marches would attract such support right across the spectrum of public opinion. People who had never protested against anything took to the streets to display their anger at not only water charges but the entire austerity programme foisted on the Irish people in order to pay off wealthy bankers in Germany and elsewhere. Water was only the catalyst which brought things to a head. The reality now facing the present and future governments is that people in general will no longer
be taken for granted by the ruling elite. No matter how hard government backbench T.D.s and indeed Ministers try and make themselves victims by being allegedly on the receiving end of death threats or other intimidation the reality is that the Genie is out of the bottle and will not be put back in that easily. The clear message is: “Ignore the electorate at your peril.” Water CHarges And speaking of water charges isn’t it remarkable how, when forced by public opinion, the government was able to reduce the charges to such an extent. It is very clear that many millions have been wasted on this
exercise over the past few months and is unlikely to be recovered. A question which bothers me is that if the new rates of water charges are capable of doing the job which Irish Water was tasked to do what was going to happen to all the extra money which would have been collected had they proceeded with the old system. Imagine the salaries and bonuses which would have been paid out of that considering that under the new regime the head of Irish water is still o n € 2 0 0 , 0 0 0 p e r y e a r. Incidentially the head of the parent company of Irish Water is also on €200,000 a year. The mind boggles. Diversion signs When the Council are carrying out roadworks they quite often have to divert traffic away from the area and place signs directing traffic along alternate routes. This is normal practice worldwide. My crib is that when the work is completed the diversion signs should be removed. The reality is that they are not and many months after the need for the diversion many of the signs are still in place. This doesn’t cause a problem for locals who know the score but is very annoying
for visitors or people trying to make deliveries etc. in areas with which they are not familiar. reCent FlooDs The recent floods in Enniscorthy brought out the best in all those affected. The businesses which were forced to close at the height of the flooding on the Friday were up and open again on the Saturday in a remarkable display of resilience. The emergency services and the council workers who put in long hours are to be complimented on their efforts to get things back to normal. Looking into the future a solution to this problem has to be found because the experts are telling us we can expect much more of this type of weather into the future. notHing CHanges Nothing much changes at the top of Irish society. The outgoing head of the Revenue Commissioners Josephine Feehily has just been nominated to be the head of the new policing authority. Her predecessor Frank Daly was appointed the first head of NAMA and has recently been reappointed. We have to ask is there nobody else in Irish society who can do these jobs other
than someone who is retiring with a large pension for the rest of their lives. And furthermore would it never strike any of these people to politely decline any such offer on the basis that they actually have enough. Free parking in ennisCortHy The recent initiative by Enniscorthy Municipal Council to offer free parking on certain days in the run up to Christmas is to be welcomed. Anything which will attract people to town during the festive season will ultimately benefit all residents. I hear some complaints that the starting time is 12 noon rather than start of business. But I reckon the reason for this is to prevent workers parking their cars outside shops all day thus defeating the purpose of the exercise. JoHn BroWne t.D. It was remiss of me in my last column not to send good wishes to the popular John Browne who is recovering from surgery. John is one of the most popular politicians in the county because of his pleasant demeanour and helpful attitude to those who approach him. Regardless of a person’s
political allegiance a call to John Browne will never go unanswered and if it is possible for him to assist a person in trouble he will. Let’s hope that we will shortly see John back in action but the important thing for him to remember is that there is a genuine affection for him in Enniscorthy and indeed further afield. Happy CHristmas Happy Christmas to all readers of this column and indeed Slaney News in general. Let’s hope that it will be a good one for all of us. It is important at this time of year to keep an eye out for the elderly (even if they are contrary ould cusses like myself) and if we see a problem intervene. If we feel that we cannot do that for any reason find out who can. Also if we have a few euro to spend try and leave it as close to home as possible as the money you spend this month could save somebody’s job or business in January. Let’s hope that 2015 will see a further improvement in all our circumstances and hopefully this recovery that we are told is on the way will reach Enniscorthy. n Words by: “View from the Hill” Vinegar Hill pic by: Joseph Doyle

From the foot of Mount Leinster to the steps of the Hogan! a wonderful night of celebration of the life and times of one of the greatest goalkeepers ever – Damian Fitzhenry – was held at riverside park Hotel, enniscorthy on 24th nov with the launch of a DvD called Fitzy – From the Foot of Mount Leinster to the Steps of the Hogan Stand.
The brainchild of Wexford GAA Guru, Ed Rowsome, as MC Tom Dempsey said in his praise: “When I want to find out something about the GAA I google Ed Rowsome.” High praise indeed. Speaking of Damian the i n c o m p a r a b l e M C To m Dempsey related many a story

from the ‘96 era like the time himself and Seanie Flood decided to complain about Fitzy’s puck outs to Liam Griffin during a players’ meeting to which Fitzy replied: “The only thing wrong with my puck outs is that I am pucking them into a graveyard.” Liam Griffin bestowed lavish praise on his star keeper saying that in a period of excellent keepers like Davy Fitz and Brendan Cummins – Fitzhenry was in a different class. “Wexford would have won no All Ireland without Fitzy” he went on to say. Liam thanked him for his tremendous loyalty to him and his loyalty to Wexford hurling and complimented Liam Dunne for drafting him in as a Selector with this year’s Senior Panel. “The pace of the Leader decided the pace of the pack and Damian Fitzhenry led the pack from the

Damian thanked Ed Rowsome for all the work he had done producing the DVD and said the he was delighted that all proceeds from sales were going directly to Wexford Mental Health. He thanked Tom Dempsey, Liam Griffin, Pat Murphy and Rackard Cody for the magnificent display of silverware on loan for the night from Kilkenny GAA. He
thanked his family, in particular his mam and dad who were 59 years married the day before. He went on to say that every time he stepped out on Croke Park he felt he was there firstly representing his family, secondly representing his club Duffry Rovers and then to do the very best he could for Wexford. In concluding Tom Dempsey paid many tributes to Damian who spanned a wonderful era in Wexford hurling, 1993 to 2009, and said that if you were
to pick one man from that period it would have to be Fitzy. “There was something very special about this player – he was brave, confident, skilful, committed, bold and daring and above all else likeable. His influence on and the relationship he has with children of all ages in testament to that.” “There is only one Damian Fitzhenry and we were privileged to hurl with him in his time.” – Maria Nolan

a fit start is in store for 2015 with preparations well underway for the return of the popular “Ferrycarrig Five”, the five mile road race on sunday January 4th. entries are now being taken for the CrossabegBallymurn Community Centre start-of-year fundraising race which has proven a hit with athletes and active families alike since it was first held in 2013. Hosted by St Killian’s AC in conjunction with the Athletics Association of Ireland, next year’s event will again offer a looped and reasonably flat route favourable for achieving fast times, chip timing and a full range of prizes, including veteran and junior categories. A new addition to the race will be the addition of a ‘corporate challenge’ team competition, which will see organisations invited to enter teams of two men and two women to compete for a corporate trophy. Another new dimension to the 2015 race is the announcement that Árachas Insurance
Brokers will be headline sponsors. Race director Pádraig Moriarty, Chairman of St Killian’s A.C., hopes to build on the success this event has enjoyed to date and is excited about plans for the 2015 race. “We are planning to make next year’s race more successful than previous years while retaining all the elements of the race that have proven so popular with runners – great venue, great course, good prize list and super food afterwards”, he said. Starting at midday at the Wexford Youths ‘Ferrycarrig Park’ complex, runners and walkers follow an anti-clockwise route through Newcastle, out and up the hard shoulder of the N11, from Kitestown Cross to Kyle Cross to return back to the complex for the finish. The festive spirit of welcome rings strong throughout the event and community members and participants alike gather together for teas, coffees and
other refreshments in the complex after the race. The second successful ‘Ferrycarrig Five’ race, held in January of this year, was a hotlycontested affair which saw athletes travel from across the county and country to compete. Mick Clohessy of Dublin’s Raheny Shamrocks A.C. was first to cross the finish line with a record-breaking time of 24:31, while his father Vinny also achieved top placing in the over60s category. Kilmore A.C.’s Jackie Carthy was the first woman across the line with a time of 30:08. Running and walking participants of all ages and levels of fitness can now enter the 2015 race by visiting the runireland.com and active.com websites. Further information and updates can be followed on the ‘Ferrycarrig “5” Five Mile Road Race’ Facebook page, or obtained by emailing ferrycarrig5@gmail.com. – Sarah Bermingham

Caroline gets motoring suvs or “soft-roaders” tend to get a bit of a bad rap. “softroader” is a bit of a derogatory term yet it tends to be quite an accurate description because these vehicles are inspired by the mud-slinging big boys from the likes of land rover - but in looks alone. Most of the fashionable SUVs have none of that amazing offroad utility – most of them are front wheel drive unless specified otherwise. This is fine of course because SUV buyers don’t tend to want a heavy duty off-roader. The focus is more on the chunky 4x4 looks, comfort and space for five people. The Ford Kuga has all that. There’s a distinctly American look to it too – the car has been built for sale in America and Europe so that goes some way to explain the more macho looks compared to its more rounded predecessor. Typically it’s grown in size so there is now more room inside and a bigger boot. The interior is a nice surprise with an impressive high quality finish and cosseting feel. There’s classy gloss black and bits of chrome about the place that make Ford’s somewhat busy dash design much more palatable in the Kuga. On the road, the Kuga is superb. The 2.0 litre 140bhp diesel is strong with great power delivery through all the gears and moves this great hulk around effortlessly. I’m not sure if I was expecting something “agricultural” but the Kuga was anything

Ford Kuga
ford kuga review by Caroline Kidd but. It’s so car-like to drive refined, quiet and comfortable. It feels sporty too. The ride errs on the firm side but it’s no bad thing - the handling is so good that the Kuga will hunker down on the road for you like a hot hatch. With a four wheel drive transmission, the test car was on the thirsty side by its nature but I got 40mpg from it easily. The Kuga comes well equipped and is offered in Zetec, Titanium and Titanium S trims. All cars get alloy wheels, fog lamps, cruise control, DRLs,
heated windscreen, alarm, trip computer and leather steering wheel. There is no base model and that’s part of Ford’s strategy to leverage the Kuga as a luxury SUV. While Ford might still have a bit of work to do before they can coax buyers out of their Audi Q3s and Range Rover Evoques, I think they might be pleasantly surprised by the quality of the Kuga if they took it for a test drive. Thank you to Ford Ireland for providing the car for review.
dipped headlamps during day by Caroline Kidd over the past month, we’ve had some of the wettest and gloomiest weather of the entire year, and at this time it’s more important than ever to use dipped headlamps during the day. But it’s become particularly obvious that some like to operate in an almost ‘stealth’ mode during times of poor visibility out on the road – not a light on anywhere on the car, though the rain may be pelting down or just a general gloominess about that swallows up cars. While technology has

The Road Safety Authority (RSA) advises drivers to use dipped headlamps at all times as research has shown that they can help to prevent head-on and front-corner collisions, which frequently occur during the daytime. Using dipped headlamps also helps drivers to better judge the distance of an oncoming car, which can stop other drivers from performing potentially hazardous overtaking manouvres. Running Lights (DRLs) fitted. These are typically dipped headlamps or dedicated lights that automatically switch on when the engine is running. The dedicated DRLs are typically a strip of LEDs at the front of the car. The problem is DRLs are usually fitted to the front of the car and not the rear. So you will find drivers going around thinking “sure my DRLs are on”, but forgetting that their tail lights will not illuminate unless they switch to dipped headlamps. Some cars also come with automatic lights that come on without driver intervention when it starts to get dark. But in my experience, the car’s brain tends not to be so good at deciphering the varying shades of gloom of an Irish winter. Common sense goes a long way in these situations too. Using dipped headlamps during the day is a simple action that can help drivers be seen and stay safe on the road – so now would be a good time to check that all your bulbs are working and put those lights on! n

As the old song says: You’ve heard of Julius Ceasar and the great Napoleon too, And how the Cork militia beat the Turks at Waterloo; But there’s a page of glory that as yet remains uncut, And that’s the warlike story of old Slattery’s Mounted Foot. This song, like Ivan Skavinsky Skavar, has 42 verses in it but Enniscorthy has some well known and some yet to be discovered writers. Like the song, you’ve heard of Colm Toibin, Mogue Doyle, Eamon Wall, Anthony Cronin and Henry Grattan Flood. But you may not have heard of a young up-and-coming writer from Enniscorthy called Andrew Hughes. This young man has two books under his belt. Recently he launched his second book in Enniscorthy Castle, to a packed room of about 100 invited guests. The setting was the Roche family drawing room where he read from
his first book The Convictions of John Delahunt and launched and read from his second book called The Coroner’s Daughter which will be out in the new year. Well done, Andrew. Speaking of Enniscorthy writers I must mention Peter Murphy who has written two critically acclaimed books – John the Revelator and Shall We Gather at the River. Also a mention for Caroline Busher. And Joe Murphy who is writing a murder novel which will be published in the new year. Another Enniscorthy writer who I must mention is John Kelly. John is from Enniscorthy and went to school in the old tech, now the library. John is a nice, quiet, easy going man who has written an acclaimed poetry book entitled Gathering the Dead in the Garden. We’ll return to John in our January issue. n – Joseph Doyle

Star Zone the revelator orchestra – the Brotherhood of the Flood
Check your preconceptions, you’re about to take a trip. This is not rock 'n' roll and it's not theatre and it's not performance art or spoken word: it's The Brotherhood of the Flood, The Revelator Orchestra's second album, inspired by frontman Peter Murphy's second novel Shall We Gather at the River (described by punk godfather Richard Hell as "majestic and squalid at the same time"). The Brotherhood of the Flood is an epic piece of work: fourteen tracks that tell the story of nine people who give themselves to the fictional Rua River in the year 1984. For the uninitiated, here's the recap: The Revelator Orchestra came together when composer/producer Acko – the one with the laptop and the Takamine and the Quaker hat – set about scoring readings from Murphy's first novel John the Revelator back in 2009. When master shaman/showman Jerry Fish heard those recordings his brain was so fried he offered to release them on his own Mudbug Club label. So they did precisely that. The resulting album The Sounds of John the Revelator, released in 2012, was described by Hot Press magazine as “the end of the world news narrated by the preacher from the black lagoon, scored by Aphex Twin’s evil siblings and directed by Hieronymus Bosch.” In the US, Jambands.com declared it, “a neat piece of work that somehow combines the weirdness of Poe with the coolness of the Beats over a soundtrack that might’ve been created by the Velvet Underground” while legendary Detroit arts maven Rick Manore was moved to remark: “The Revelator Orchestra is a primal, foreboding trio that baptizes the listener in a muddy Delta Blues wash, while Murphy evokes the glorious dread of Edgar Allen Poe coupled with his Joycean rhythmic cadence… I just can’t stop listening and watching.” I would put Murphy up there with the likes of Jon Bon Jovi or Bruce Springsteen – he is a genius of a writer and a very easy, laid back person. I think he writes words like bullets out of a machine gun. His book, John the Revelator, is a good read but a bit hard to get in on at first. I look foward to hearing the The Brotherhood of the Flood CD and seeing the Revelator Orchestra bring this piece of work to life on the stage in the Wexford Arts Centre on 4th Dec. Crime at the Castle What a magical event at enniscorthy Castle on Friday 21st november as local writer andrew Hughes launched the paperback edition of his beautifully written crime thriller the Convictions of John Delahunt. A more appropriate venue couldn’t have been found for this 19th century thriller about a real life character John Delahunt who was an informant for Dublin Castle paid for information on crimes committed in the city. Delahunt found this occupation so lucrative that he began to commit crimes himself and inform on others to collect the reward until the case of the ‘Italian Boy’ when Dublin became outraged with the murder of a young boy and the secret life of John Delahunt was uncovered.

The unassuming archivist, Andrew Hughes, told the large audience in attendance at the Castle that he had come across this bizarre tale when he was working on his non-fiction work ‘Lives Less Ordinary’ and was so intrigued with this
dark tale that he felt compelled to write about it. “And what a job he did on it” according to fellow author Carmel Harrington who was lavish in her praise of this macabre tale and its extremely gifted author. As a member of FOCAL, Carmel said that the Wexford Literary Festival was honoured to be associated with Andrew and with the fabulous atmospheric event complete with glimmering candles and haunting violin vibes. She said that she had really enjoyed the book and was blown away by the quality of the writing and was very much looking forward to Andrew’s second book T h e C o ro n e r s D a u g h t e r. Praising the attendance who turned out in numbers on a really dreadfully wet night Carmel said that this was what

FOCAL was all about – supporting existing and up and coming local literary talent. Andrew read an extract from his second novel The Coroners Daughter which will be released in 2015 – a total work of fiction this time set in 1816 Dublin and revolving around a young female sleuth and presented Mary McCauley a signed copy of The Convictions of John Delahunt
as the winner of our FOCAL Facebook Competition. Before concluding Andrew thanked Byrne’s Bookstore and the FOCAL Literary Committee for all their work on the event and commended what they were doing in promoting Wexford writers and poets. Such was the ambience of the occasion and the surroundings people were loath
to leave and dallied in the comfort of our exquisite Castle chatting and enjoying all things literary. Watch this space for the next FOCAL event on Thursday 11th Dec when we will be hosting a Poetry Evening with Joe Neal at the Castle as Enniscorthy establishes itself as the centre of literary genius. – Maria Nolan

i had the pleasure of attending an amazing book launch on sunday 16th nov in the Westgrove Hotel in Clane, Co. kildare when the Beauty of everyday life was launched by well known Jesuit and champion of the homeless peter mc verry. Compiled by author Adrian Millar, The Beauty Of Everyday Life is a collection of short stories by celebrities including Joe Duffy, Gerry Adams, Frances Black, Bressie, Luka Bloom, Paul Galvin, Maria Duffy, Mary Kennedy, Peter McVerry, Ann Egan, Sinead Moriarty, Colm O’Gorman, Maura O’Connell,

Pic: Maria Nolan. and Wexford author Carmel Harrington. “This book is like a finger pointing to the beauty of everyday life – a book full of stories to be mediated upon. A book to encourage us to look around us and share the joys of everyday life and to live more fully in the present moment.” “If you want to see the beauty of everyday life first hand then you need only to look to the homeless”, Peter McVerry went on to say, “If they have half a sandwich they will share it, if they have a cigarette they will share it.”
The Beauty of Everyday Life “is about seeing the everyday things afresh” according to Adrian Millar the inspiration behind the publication. “The stories in this book capture the beauty of everyday life wonderfully. They were written by people who over the years have shone a light in our lives through their words and deeds and who have inspired us or entertained us. They will make you laugh, cry and reflect, but above all else they will remind you of the beauty of your own everyday life and inspire you
to live it ever more fully.” All proceeds from the sales of The Beauty Of Everyday Life will go to Teenline – a registered charity which provides a national, freephone, nondirective helpline service for teenagers who may be feeling alone, worried or distressed. Maureen Bolger one of the founding members of Teenline, in memory of her son Darragh who took his own life in 2006, was lavish in her praise of Adrian Millar and all the writers who contributed to the poignant anthology. Tragically,
the HSE has cut funding to Teenline so she encouraged everyone to promote and sell this book to as many as possible. “We need to give our young teenagers someone to talk to”, Maureen stressed. Local author Carmel Harrington said that she was delighted to be associated with this beautiful anthology in aid of a very worthy cause and was privileged to be in such illustrious company as Maria Duffry, Adrian Millar, Peter McVerry, Frances Black, Mary Kennedy and Joe Duffy to

name but a few! And the motto in Carmel’s short story and one she lives by is, “Always start the day as if it’s a special one. Because you never know, it might just turn into an amazing one.” And that has certainly been the case for Carmel! Adrian Millar told the large attendance that all local media around the country, papers and radio stations, have been asked to promote and advertise The Beauty Of Everyday Life. At €12.99 per copy this is both a wonderful and emotive read as well as support for a most worthy charity. Buy one now! – Maria Nolan

New Slaney Writing… angel by Mary Cotter Mary taught for 37 years in St. Kevin's School in Greystones and loved every minute. She liked to try something different from time to time. This was one of those times. Long ago, When I was teaching First Class We decided to do angels For Christmas. No surprise there. We had paper ones And play dough, Pipe cleaners And colour in, Pleated doily ones And a few made from pasta It all fell off. But then we thought, Maybe our Mams and Dads Might like to try And make an angel too We didn’t want to keep All the fun for ourselves. So the word went out. I had no idea how much pressure Can be exerted by seven year olds On already busy parents. I had no idea how much talent Resided in ordinary homes On ordinary nights. We had a clay one, very tall And willowy,
One done in fretwork, We got a painted angel And baked ones We even had a garden angel All wicker and ivy. A crochet one And one made of boxes. [We were big into recycling]. A real live artist did one in pencil I fancied that. So, we had an exhibition In the 2003 extension. And the parents came And the children glowed. They were proud of their parents This time round. Of course, It is easy to buy an angel For 25€, On eBay you may even get a used one Delivered for a song. Done Deal may do a deal On an l.e.d lighted, tinsel shimmering, Multi-coloured halo. You could get one at a Craft Fair, Or a Charity Day, That would help someone. But, those parent- made angels Were a sight to behold, And heralded, in their way Tidings of comfort and joy. You could grab an empty Pringle box Some tinsel and some string, Use pipe cleaners for hands, And let your angel sing. n

tate guerin gallery is pleased to present to their visitors “Felt” a new exhibition by Wexford based artist andrew kenny which is being launched this thursday (4th December). Since graduating, from the Wexford School of Art, in 2008 with a BA (Hons). Kenny has undertaken 11 solo shows nationwide and has been awarded national and international residencies. His work is an exploration of, and response to, a number of paranormal and fortean related phenomena. The variety of work on show explores ideas of thoughtography, telekinesis, poltergeist phenomena and artificially created poltergeist phenomena. Thoughtography or Nensha is the process of willing an image into existence in this case onto undeveloped Polaroid film. This idea is his main focus for this show and can be seen in his approach in his
videos and large portraits painted on roof felt. Additional drawings and video in this exhibition relates to a poltergeist disturbance which happened in Enniscorthy in 1910 which led to the drawings 'you'll soon see the rat it is' and also research of the “Society for research into rapport and telekinesis” (SORRAT) who over the period of three decades created a wide selection of paranormal phenomena. The exhibition will continue until 25th January 2015.

After traipsing the length and breadth of the country I am proud to report that our run at the Drama Festival was a fruitful, rewarding one. Two seconds and a third, on top of that three nominations. One for our director Colum Coomey, one each for Fintan Kelly and Podge Dwyer respectively for their performances. And an adjudicator’s award for myself and Fintan, it was the show of leg. Definitely the show of leg. It was a great experience and many memories were made as well as new friends. Big thank you to all involved especially our hard-working, dedicated crew, Miley, McGuire and Greg. Not a cut-off jeans nor a mullet between the three of them. Thanks for all the support and we'll see you all next year!
