comment I hope all our readers had a very happy Christmas and I wish you all good health and happiness in 2015. January is a time to look back at the year just gone and to look forward to the new one just beginning. Thankfully there are signs that local people are taking action on a number of fronts to bring about positive changes in our community. We have five major festivals in the town every year making us Ireland’s premier festival town. The Enniscorthy Business Association and Enniscorthy Chamber are very active on the business front. We have wonderful facilities in the town including the new state-of-the-art, international standard, running track; the Country Walk by the Slaney; the beautiful Presentation Centre; the revamped Greyhound Track; two 4-star hotels; top class sports facilities for virtually every sport you can think of, etc. All these developments are the result of a small number of people commiting themselves to the betterment of Enniscorthy. We should all make it our New Year’s resolution to follow their good example and help make our town a better place for all of us to live in 2015.

Enniscorthy at Christmas The run up to Christmas in Enniscorthy was packed with activity with Delightful Dollies Linedancing, Fairytales and Santa at the Castle, Bui Bolg parading through the streets, the switching on of the Christmas Street Lights and markets, markets everywhere. On Saturday 6th December after watching the Delightful Dollies kick their heels at Market Square I headed to the IFA Centre to take in the Christmas Craft Market organised by the ebullient Maura Flannery. Maura, a constant supporter and promoter of all things crafty, artistic and local had an array of colourful, festive and innovative stalls to delight even the most selective shopper with everything on display from exquisitely designed

Christmas decorations by the lovely Sarah McClean (Lihua Zou) from China and Aneta Opolska and Mateusz Magdziak from Poland to felted knitwear by Blanka Davare from Switzerland and handmade cards by artist Marja van Kempen from Holland – all now living in the Enniscorthy area but adding a wonderful cosmopolitan element to the Christmas Fayre. PJ Furlong from Herbalife was there promoting all things healthy and energetic as was Sarah Byrne from Aloe Inspired Forever with Clean 9 – a 9 day nutritional body cleanse to kick start a weight management programme – one that we will no doubt need after all the indulgence of the festive period.

The Country Markets had a huge display of beautiful edibles on display as did Sarah Nolan Murphy with her colourful cupcakes and traditional puddings. Guidedogs for the Blind had their stall with an array of goods ideal for Christmas pressies along with Diane Murphy who had handcrafted everything on her stall herself over the past year and Carrig Crafts were there with a stunning array of handcrafted jewellery. Several Transition Year students had stalls displaying their wares including Niamh Crowhurst promoting her face and body scrubs and Sean Morrissey and Odhran Stynes who had produced fabulous slate cheeseboards for sale but my favourite I have to say was Mark Kavanagh from Davidstown whose innovative idea really impressed me – Mark is making pens from old and broken hurls belonging to some of the most famous hurlers of our time including Henry Shefflin, TJ Reid, John Mullane, Nicky English, Pat Fox, Tom Dempsey, Damian Fitzhenry, Billy Byrne, Larry O’Gorman and many, many more. Your pen comes in a beautifully crafted box which say this pen was crafted from the hurl of…… A most excellent idea and what a way to recycle old and broken hurls – top marks go to Mark not only for coming up with this idea but also for the wonderful sales pitch he gave me – he didn’t have to of course I was sold at the word hurl – and all

Enniscorthy Community Information Services Can you help with We’ve Moved… Meals on Wheels?
Enniscorthy Community Service Council has been in existence for 45 years serving the community of Enniscorthy and its environs. Delivering Meals on Wheels to about 60 people six days a week they always need volunteer drivers. Drivers are asked to be available between the hours of 11.45am–1.00pm Monday to Saturday for one week of the year. The Council also operates an information service (Enniscorthy Community Information Services) for the general public. This service has been running for the past 35 years offering FREE and CONFIDENTIAL information on social welfare, health services, housing, tax, education, consumer affairs, etc. The Enniscorthy Community Service Council sponsors a Care of the Elderly Community Employment scheme funded by Solas (FAS). The work on this project is a communication

Protect yourseLf against PowersheLL attacks Windows 7 and 8 have a vulnerability that could leave users open to a hacking attack that would go unnoticed by them or any antivirus they have installed. PowerShell 2 is a command shell that has come preinstalled with every version of Windows since Windows 7, including Windows 10. It allows certain processes to be automated and scripts to be run, which is particularly handy for system administrators. However, as it's on by default in Windows 8 and 8.1 and most people don't realise, it also presents a handy vector through which hackers can attack your system and go undetected.

The newly formed Enniscorthy Historic and Re-enactment Group were at Market Square on Saturday 20th December to commemorate the 1914 Christmas Day Truce when Allied and German forces emerged from the trenches of No Man’s Land to celebrate the birth of Christ and revisit their own humanity in that Christmas time over one hundred years ago. Joined by Enniscorthy Choral Society and Stephen Murphy, who gave a beautiful performance of the poignant piece Christmas 1914, the Enniscorthy group in both German and Allied uniforms reenacted the famous handshake along with a little bit of football delighting those who had gath-
ered for the event with an emotive piece of living history. Some were visibly stirred by the momentous occasion and full of compliments for the Re-enactment Group who displayed poise, dignity and respect for the memory of those who in the depths of war amid the horrors of Flanders Fields were able to rediscover love and understanding for their fellow man if only for a couple of stolen hours on a Silent Night long ago. A moment in history that should never be forgotten. Following the ceremony at Market Square the Re-enactment Group did a walking, or should I say marching, tour of the town and were amazed by all the well wishers and good-

It certainly added a different dimension to downtown Enniscorthy on the last weekend before Christmas. So well done once again Enniscorthy and well done to the Historic and Re-enactment Group who under the guidance and tutelage of Rory O’Connor and Ray Murphy were both honoured and privileged to be associated with the commemoration and look forward to a full and varied programme of events and reenactments in Enniscorthy in 2015. – Maria Nolan

Drugs & Alcohol Task Force Over 8,000 people in Co. Wexford helped to combat Drugs & Alcohol Abuse… As of now the government’s strategy to tackle the increasing problem of drugs and alcohol abuse is failing despite the dedicated work of the various professional and voluntary workers involved. This was stated by Declan MacPartlin, Chairman of the County Wexford Drugs & Alcohol Task Force, at a press conference at the end of 2014 to highlight the increasing devastation of people’s lives in County Wexford. In July 2009, introducing the new National Drugs Strategy 2009-2016, then Taoiseach Brian Cowan said, “problem drug use continues to be one of the most significant challenges facing our country. It undermines the potential of the person involved, devastating the lives of families and causing huge problems for local communities”, the Task Force Chairman said. That situation had not just remained since 2009 but in County Wexford and throughout the country, the problem of drugs and alcohol abuse had multiplied, he said. “That this has happened against a background of reduced resources to tackle the problem is reflected in a failed strategy and frontline and voluntary agencies

being asked to achieve the impossible”, the Task Force Chairman said. The result in Co. Wexford was not just a substantial increase in the problem of substance misuse but associated deaths through ill health and suicide of young people together with an emerging problem of drugs and alcohol related homelessness, he said. There were committed expert professional and voluntary people fully capable of tackling the issue of substance misuse but under the existing ‘Government Strategy’ they were not being backed with sufficient resources, the Task Force Chairman said. “Until this happens instead of stabilising the drugs and alcohol problem the lack of an effective National Drugs
Strategy will mean an increase of misery for individuals, and further insidious undermining of society involving ever younger family members”, he said. The recently published study by the National Advisory Committee on Drugs and Alcohol ‘Illicit Drug Markets in Ireland’ said that there was a growing evidence both internationally and in Ireland that partnership approaches involving local communities, state agencies and other stakeholders offered the most effective method of responding to many drug problems, he said. “The Wexford Task Force agrees with this summation and, for instance, the figures for clients assisted by Wexford’s Cornmarket Project indicates just how important it is to have
a properly resourced, co-ordinated effort to combat what is an escalating problem involving ever young members of the community”, the Wexford Task Force Chairman said. An indication of the extent of the substance abuse problem in Co. Wexford could be seen in the extent of the work of the Cornmarket Project which on a non judgemental basis assisted people needing help with their substance abuse. “In the past decade Cornmarket has dealt with 8,980 clients and, importantly, of those who were offenders 87% of them have not since offended”, he stated. This statistic alone indicated the value of an effective intervention service which gave an opportunity for drug users and offenders, not in contact with existing services, to be motivated towards treatment, rehabilitation and other supports, he said. “The one heartening thing to be seen in the whole substance misuse problem is the level of expertise and dedication of those involved in frontline action, but the disheartening thing is the continued pressure on resources which contravenes every strategy and report on how to tackle the continuously increasing undermining of society by drugs and alcohol abuse”, Declan MacPartlin concluded. n

Enniscorthy VTOS at the Enniscorthy Adult Education Centre The annual Awards Ceremony was held at the Bellefield GAA Complex on Wednesday 10th December. In attendance and presenting the Certificates was Mary Walsh Adult Education Officer of the Waterford and We x f o rd E d u c a t i o n a n d Training Board. Mary was warmly welcomed by the staff and students at the Centre. There was a party atmosphere with plenty of festive food and cheer as there was a distinct Christmas flair to the celebrations. VTOS celebrated their 25th Anniversary this
year and ended on a high note. Congratulations were extended to students past and present who were presented with Awards in Business Administration and General Learning at FETAC Level 5 with others achieving a General Learning Award at FETAC Level 3. Manual Handling certificates were presented on behalf of Mary Barron of Silver Fern. The staff of VTOS were congratulated and thanked for their professional expertise, help on the day and their dedication to ensuring that the students achieved to the max-

Hope Centre helps prostate cancer survivors Prostate cancer rates in Ireland are the highest in Europe and amongst the highest in the world. In 2010, 3,125 men were diagnosed with prostate cancer in Ireland. Irish men have a 1 in 8 chance of developing prostate cancer (to put this in context, Irish women have a 1 in 10 chance of developing breast cancer). After skin cancer, prostate cancer is the leading cause of cancer in men. Prostate cancer is often a slow growing cancer, particularly in older men, and symptoms may not occur for many years. Prostate cancer is 90% curable if it is treated in its earliest stages (see more at: www.cancer.ie). The Hope Cancer Support Centre will deliver a six week Prostate Psychosocial Education Programme which was developed by the Irish Cancer Society for prostate cancer survivors. The aim of the programme is to enhance the physical and psychosocial wellbeing and quality of life for prostate cancer survivors by identifying and responding to supportive care needs, developing healthy coping strategies and managing lifestyle changes. The core topic areas will include: ● physical health and well being ● sexual functioning, issues and concerns

psychosocial/emotional health and stress management information/practical needs social needs related to involvement in relationships spiritual needs related to hope, belong, meaning and purpose to life.

Hope & Dream 10 charity road race The 2015 Hope & Dream 10 Charity Road Race was officially launched in Enniscorthy’s Presentation Centre on 10th December last. The race will consist of a 10 mile run and a 10k walk and will take place on April 12th, 10.15am, at The Promenade, Enniscorthy. This year’s event is being organised by Michael Jordan, well known Secretary of the Hope Cancer Support Centre in Enniscorthy. Michael will be assisted by a team of 200 committed volunteers. Funds raised from the event will go to the Hope Cancer

Thanks to the EnniscorThy BusinEss AssociATion there were many positive things happening in Enniscorthy this christmas… FESTIVE LIGHTS The Enniscorthy Business Association (EBA) would like to thank all the businesses in town who contributed towards the cost of putting up the town’s stunning Christmas Lights and putting on the town’s Christmas programme of entertainment. Without these businesses our streets would have been dark and dreary this Christmas. Also thanks to Enniscorthy Municipal District for their generous financial contribution. CHrISTmaS ParadE For the second successive year the EBA organised a spectacular Christmas Parade featuring the Bui Bolg street theatre group. The streets of Enniscorthy were packed with spectators who enjoyed the sight and sound of the various performers, including Santa Claus himself, as they passed through the town. ENTErTaINmENT The entertainment programme ran over the weekends in December with everything from theatre, panto, music, dancing, choirs, etc and the superb Stephen Murphy keeping the entertainment running smoothly ably assisted by Tom Byrne on sound.

CraFT STaLLS A wide range of crafts and other produce was displayed by Transition Year students as well as local businesses on Rafter Street, Church Street and Main Street, all adding to the wonderful Christmas atmosphere. SHOP wINdOw COmPETITION The Riverside Park Hotel kindly sponsored a Christmas Shop Window Competition. A panel from the hotel walked around town on 12th December to judge and the top prize of a trip for two people to one of the Great National Hotels in Ireland with 2 nights bed & breakfast and 4course evening meal was deservedly won by Evolv on Castle Hill. PrImary SCHOOLS arT COmPETITION Another great competition was the Primary Schools Art Competition with lots of great prizes. This was the first year the Enniscorthy Business Association ran this competition and the huge entry of over 500 exceeded all expectations. All entries were dispalyed in a shop premises on Castle Street kindly provided by John Kavanagh. The sponsors, Byrnes Bookstore, will be holding a prizegiving night later this month with the celebrity judge, Don Conroy, in attendance where he will give a workshop and present the prizes to the various category winners and runners-up. GaLa CHrISTmaS raFFLE A l a rg e p ro p o r t i o n o f Enniscorthy’s businesses came together again this Christmas to allow their customers participate in a major Christmas Raffle with loads of prizes. For every €10 a customer spent in a par-
ticipating outlet they received a token to put on a competition card provided by the participating outlets. Once the card contained 10 tokens it was entered into a major draw with loads of shopping voucher prizes. The prizewinners were: Sara Byrne 1st Prize €500 in Vouchers. Mrs Pender 2nd Prize €300 in Vouchers. Paul Doyle 3rd Prize €200 in Vouchers. 4th to 10th Prizes of €100 each in vouchers: Margaret McMullen, Rita Redmond, Eliza Chapman, Megan Mitten, Brian Kehoe, Madison O’Brien, Shannon Dagg. 11th to 15th Prizes of €50 each in vouchers: Mary O’Leary, Breda Ryan, Bridie Devereux, Sean Lenehan and Samantha Dreelan. OTHEr aCTIVITy In addition to all the foregoing which was organised through the Enniscorthy Business Association there was lots happening elsewhere (much of it covered on these pages) including Santa in the Castle and in Kilcannon, carol services, concerts, coffee mornings, Christmas cupcakes demonstration, pantomimes,
concerts, craft fair, various events in Enniscorthy library, etc. In fact there was so much happening that the Enniscorthy Business Association produced 15,000 copies of an excellent brochure highlighting it all. FrEE ParKING The free parking provided by Enniscorthy Municipal District (every Friday and Saturday in December until Christmas, from 12 noon and also on Mon 22nd, Tues 23rd, and Weds 24th December) was most welcome. With 10 public car parks with a total of 401 pay parking spaces, a further 547 on-street pay parking spaces, 63 disabled spaces, and 507 free all-yearround car parking spaces there was plenty of spaces for shoppers to use in the run up to Christmas. The Enniscorthy Business Association asked town-centre business owners and their staff not to park outside their own premises and thankfully most complied and left these prime spots available for shoppers but, unfortunately, a handful insisted on parking outside their own premises thus depriving themselves and their neighbours of potential customers.
The logic of such behaviour always baffles this writer! E N N I S C O rT H y T O w N VOuCHEr Enniscorthy Chamber organised a massive banner across Castle Street to promote the Enniscorthy Town Voucher Scheme (one voucher which can be used in different businesses and services across the town). Three of our local institutions helped bring about this innovative scheme; the Chamber of Commerce, the Credit Union and the Enniscorthy Business Association. In all there are over 80 businesses which accept the vouchers. A full list of the participating businesses and trades people can be found at the Enniscorthy Chamber of Commerce website and any others who wish to join are more than welcome. The vouchers can be purchased at the following: Credit Union, Byrnes Bookstore, Frizelle O’Leary Solicitors, Hilltop Dry Cleaners and the Waterfront. At the time of going to print we don’t have an update on how much was spent on these vouchers in the pre-Christmas period but hopefully sales were good and this will help to safe-guard retail jobs in the town. n
Santa at Bellefield GAA another lovely Enniscorthy Christmas event was a surprise visit by Santa to the Coiste na nOg annual Children’s Party at Bellefield Gaa. The excitement was palpable in the clubhouse as the children heard the tinkling of Santa’s bell as the wonderful man himself entered the building complete with large black sack with something for everyone in the audience.
One little man in particular, Darragh Jordan, was particularly taken with the jovial man in red and followed him all the way out to the front door and was most reluctant to let him go amid copious hugs and kisses. Well done Rapparees/ Starlights GAA and Coiste Committee for organising this free Christmas event for all their little members. – Maria nolan

CHRISTMAS IN ENNISCORTHY The spirit of Enniscorthy at Christmas Over the festive period I was completely Christmased in the most wonderful way by a visit to Santa’s Grotto at Kilcannon Garden Centre and was completely blown away by the total wonder of it all. The idea from my two older nieces, Michelle and Ciara, to take their cousin, my youngest niece Sheila, to see Santa at Kilcannon and to include me was magic in itself and Kilcannon pulled out all the stops this year creating the magic and enchantment of this delightful time of the year. From the moment that 6year-old Sheila knocked on the green door and stepped
over the threshold into the dreamlike winter Wonderland she was under the Ho Ho Ho spell just as the adults in her company were. Sheila was the proud possessor of a Golden (shades of Willy Wonka like) ticket which made her a very special little girl indeed and she got to hear a lovely story from Mrs. Claus and was allowed to sprinkle magic dust into the Christmas pudding bowl making a Christmas Wish for someone apart from herself (a very nice idea indeed). Mrs. Claus was excellent – pleasant, round faced, warm and lovely and when she asked Sheila if she would like to sit on Santa’s bed and hold
the Naughty and Nice Lists the captivated 6-year-old was duly impressed and held the lists in her arms with the greatest of reverence. Sheila was presented with a lovely Christmas Tree decoration to colour in herself and asked to guess the name of the beautiful white teddy bear which she aptly enough christened Wooly. Then all of us were invited to sit in Santa’s charming sleigh and let a few giddy-ups at Rudolf and then it was off to see the Big Fat Man with the long white beard who was another kindly gentle person who made 6-year-old Sheila feel completely at ease as she told Santa exactly what she would like him to bring her
on Christmas morn. He invited her to choose a present from his large sacks and wisely she picked a lovely, cuddly Rudolf and we said our goodbyes and headed into a lovely, partially covered garden area to post our letter to Santa and partake of delicious hot chocolate and of course relive our magical experience. Made even more so when Sheila told us that her wish when she sprinkled magic dust into the Christmas pudding bowl was for a very happy Christmas for her friend Caoimhe. Well done Kilcannon – it was a truly beautiful encounter with the Enniscorthy Spirit of Christmas. – Maria nolan

Re-enacting the 1914 Christmas Day Truce Enniscorthy Historic and Re-enactment Group were at Market Square on Saturday 20th December to commemorate the 1914 Christmas Day Truce when Allied and German forces emerged from the trenches of No Man’s Land to celebrate the birth of Christ and revisit their own humanity. as PrO of Enniscorthy drama I was delighted to hear recently from one of our actors Nic Furlong who played richard roma in our summer production of Glengarry Glen ross staged at The Presentation Centre in august. Nic, a very talent thespian, has been busy since then making his way and hopefully making his name as far away as L.A. Nic has been taken on by RPM Talent Agency who have negotiated auditions for their actors for shows like When I Met Your Mother, Breaking Bad, and Brooklyn 99. While in L.A. Nic took the opportunity
to do masterclasses with Anthony Meindl a well known and highly respected acting coach and screenwriter. Nic has also been extremely busy closer to home and has worked on two feature films, three short movies and two commercials. One of the short stories has recently been accepted into the Richard Harris Film Festival in Limerick where it received a tremendous reception. One of the feature films Taryn Baker is due to be released into cinemas nationwide towards the end of 2015 and the second one Captive will be coming out on DVD in early March and will be available from HMV, XtraVision and online from Amazon. Nic has also been asked back by Stephen Patrick Kenny, Director of Captive, to appear in another movie called The Pigman Murders and is due to begin filming early next year. How lovely to see a local lad doing so well both home and abroad. Having seen Nic in Glengarry Glen Ross there
is no doubt that he has the Xfactor – a handsome, attractive, confident guy with oodles of acting ability – that’s a combination for success if I ever heard one. Don’t forget to mention Enniscorthy Drama Group when you are being interviewed on the red carpet Nic!

Joanne holds classes in her home village of Clonroche and also in New ross, Gorey and in the beautiful setting of Enniscorthy’s Presentation Centre. Joanne is a virtuoso soprano in her own right and is a regular performer on stage all over the South East most recently seen and heard giving a superb performance in the lead role of Eva Peron in Evita in St Michael’s Theatre New Ross. Joanne is also the energetic conductor of the Enniscorthy Gospel Choir. Joanne’s students are following in her own footsteps with many prizewinners among them. Most recently 13 of her students sang as part of the Christmas programme of entertainment in Enniscorthy’s Market Square and four of them qualified for the final of the Enniscorthy’s Got Talent

Sandstorm Dance Company recently ran their show 'Mirage' in both the Wexford Arts Centre and Gorey Little Theatre. The show is a brand new collaboration between Sandstorm and Wexford town based tribal fusion group The Belladonna and is an unforgettable night of classical and fusion style Bellydance, Egyptian Folklore, Indian dance, Spanish dance and Latin fusions. 2014 was a great year for local rapper Podge dwyer… In his own words: “2014 was madness. On a personal level, the greatest thing ever happened but, with that it brought some crazy periods trying to adapt but we came out looking ok. On a musical level it’s been unreal. Highlights include: ● The ridiculous support I got for Demons II especially from those in Enniscorthy who lived through that "Black November". ● RTE getting hold of the song and the documentary that followed. ● My gig in Benedicts which was just out of the planet. ● Getting picked up by Chuck D's Rapstation after I dropped "Badman's World" and getting it played along with receiving props from the great man himself. ● Paul McGrath expressing on Twitter that he loved one of my songs. ● Being front page of The Echo and Guardian in succession and the Independent covering a piece on me. ● Road Less Travelled becoming my second successive song on American radio. ● Berry Jam.
And all the other great things that happened including people I've been fans of for years now considering me their peer from a different country. In summary it’s been an awesome year both musically and personally, that I can't fully summarise while on the shitter. I'd like to greatly thank those who have supported me and who I've had an impact on. I'd also like to apologise to anyone who was affected or offended by my periods of madness. "Nuthin But A Boozehound" is almost done and I won't let you down. Have a good 2015. Peace and RIP Bobby Womack.” And modest man that he is Podge didn’t even mention his starring role in Enniscorthy Drama Group’s production of Pvt. Wars. Yes, a busy and successful year for Podge. n

JamIE’S GOOd NEwS If you’re reading this, chances are you are above ground. That in itself is good news!!! Happy New Year!!! THaT’S NICE Before we delve in, I want to make one thing crystal clear. I have nothing but respect and admiration for Brendan O’Carroll. His success is astounding and he is entitled to every last drop of it. But I recently saw Mrs. Brown’s Boys D’Movie. What can I say? If you are a fan, chances are you saw it in the cinema and rushed out to buy the DVD. And as with Brendan, I wish you every happiness with it. But ask yourself objectively, was it any good and did you get short changed? The two answers you’re looking for there are no and yes, respectively. The television show works. It might not be to your taste, and I will freely admit to watching it sporadically and laughing out loud. But fundamentally it works, it is gently humorous in a pantomime

View From The Nosebleeds way and a major Irish success story. In short it is a winning formula. So inevitably, as was the wont with popular sitcoms of the 70’s and 80’s, the movie was a foregone conclusion. But take off your rose tinted glasses and watch the movie spinoffs of Are you Being served? or steptoe and son again. Sweet Alf Garnett on a barge pole they are nothing short of woeful. Take your characters and send them on holiday – lazy, predictable and populist. Therein lies the problem with D’Movie. There are many good things about it, the opening is simply joy-
ous and, throughout the movie, Dublin has never looked more gorgeous. When the comedy hits, it is really funny (Jon Kenny can take a simple line and make it worthy of three belly laughs). But then there are the bad points. Oh, there are bad points. The subplot with the ninja school For The Blind is just that, a one joke gag. A gag the film stretches over an hour and is surrounded by misplaced blatant racism. It is cringe worthy. And despite the upgrade in the way the movie was filmed it constantly felt like one long episode of the sitcom which is not a bad
thing but it is when you have to fill 90 something minutes. On the flip side is The inbetweeners 2 which I watched after D’Movie. The first film was also an extension of a standard episode but it held your attention for longer than D’Movie. It tried to be a standalone film and there were glimpses of originality and a sense of a movie rather than a faceless cash-in. The sequel ups the game considerably. We join our hapless heroes as Will is trying and failing to adapt to life in Bristol Unveristy. Jay is “living the dream” in Australia with an inspired Scorcese spoof of his
famous “tracking shot monologue”. For me, the high point of the movie. Because you know in your heart, as per usual, Jay is talking through his hoop and none of it is remotely true but it is hilarious. The boys decide to join Jay in Australia and they go on a journey to track down Jane from the first movie, the woman Jay madly loves but can’t bring himself to admit. What follows has all the trademarks of what we’ve come to expect. Sad attempts to be normal, poo and wee jokes, the endless quest for a place to fit in. And the last ten minutes is,
believe it or not, a beautiful piece of existentialism. The actors play it almost like Wa i t i n g F o r G o d o t … I f Waiting For Godot had homoerotic undertones and two piss jokes. All joking aside, it is a glorious sequence and it bookends a clever little film. Mrs. Brown’s Boys has Brendan O’Carroll playing a Chinese man (with dodgy accent) from Finglas. Go figure. So there you have it. Two majorly successful movies. One that will, especially if you’re a fan, leave you feeling short-changed and once you stop viewing as a devotee will see it for what it is, a diverging little movie that always feels like a studio cash-in. Which also has genuine love and warmth in among the racism and poor sight gags. The other will make you weary of visiting a water park again and hopefully should steer you towards reading Waiting For Godot. And also wish you never have to work with dolphins… or as a toilet attendant. – Jamie Murphy

Lyrics by, and based on an idea by, Tim Rice. The Society last produced “CHESS”18 years ago in 1997 when it was a big hit with audiences and members alike. The story is centred on two Chess grandmasters, an American and a Russian, and the woman who manages one, and falls in love with the other. It’s a big dramatic show with a pulsating score, great cho-
ruses and songs such as “I Know Him So Well”, “One Night in Bangkok”, “Pity the Child”, “Someone Else’s Story” and of course “Anthem”. It is expected to prove a very popular choice to follow on last year’s hugely successful Sister Act! The production team for the show is the same successful team as Sister Act and The Witches of Eastwick b e i n g : - D i re c t o r – J o h n Donnelly; Musical Director – Fintan Cleary; Chorus Mistress – Eithne Corrigan and Choreographer – Nicole McDonald. Local pubs – new investment The pub trade has suffered more than most in the current era of austerity and declining disposable income so it is great to see some of our local publicans and hoteliers investing in the pub trade. Dawsons on Duffry Hill has been transformed both inside and outside (see ad page 7) and we will be featuring more on this story in our February issue. Vinnies Bar on the Island Road has also undergone major renovation and again we will have the full story in our February issue. Crown Bar to Re-Open The iconic Crown Bar located on Monck Street in Wexford town will reopen its doors in 2015. Colm Neville, owner of the Riverside Park Hotel in Enniscorthy, together with his brother Anthony, are delighted to confirm they have recently purchased the eminent hostelry. The Neville brothers have substantial plans to re-establish The Crown as one of the premier Wexford Town pubs and hope

to add a substantial Beer Garden to the premises while seeking to preserve the charm and character that was always part of the Crown Bar in the new design. The Crown Bar holds a lot of memories for many people in Wexford and has been profoundly missed since its closing over two years ago. The Neville brothers are extremely excited to revive such an iconic bar as the Crown Bar and are looking forward to getting to work on the project with their design team over the coming weeks. Spice Restaurant, currently trading from the first floor of the premises, has a great trade and has won many food awards and will remain trading from the premises. Colm Neville is looking forward to working with Spice and believes both businesses will benefit from each other. Following substantial refurbishment and expansion works it is anticipated that the new Crown Bar will re-open its doors to the public in the summer of 2015. n

Lidl supports Barretstown Nichole Dempsey, Wexford, was one of the lucky 141 winners in the nationwide Lidl Trolley Dash, which took place Saturday 13th December in every Lidl store across the country. As well as winning their Christmas shopping for free (the average of goods won per person totalled €350), each winner also contributed to the whopping €135,438 which was raised from ticket sales in just two short weeks. A total of €5,677 was raised in Wexford alone. Speaking about Lidl’s Christmas Trolley Dash, Sinead Flynn of Lidl Ireland, said: “We are thrilled with the result of our Christmas fundraising initiatives for our charity partner Barretstown. In two short weeks, Lidl stores across the country have raised over €135,000 from one initiative alone. We would like to thank

Pudding Run 2014 They say that to be forgotten is to die twice, well that is certainly not the case for the late Michael Foley as a large crowd of family, friends, team-mates and associates gathered once again at Bellefield GAA Complex to participate in the annual St. Stephen’s Day Pudding Run in his memory and in aid of the Michael Foley CBS Bursary Fund which has helped two students each year since his passing to go forward to third level education. In rather unseasonable and certainly inclement weather conditions, the crowd shed the Christmas cobwebs and completed the course despite the heavy rain with Fran Miller of the Rappstars Social Steppers the first man home closely followed by Adrian Cambell with special recognition for Declan Ivers who completed the course twice and Padraig Doyle who was the first over 50 to return to the clubhouse. The first female home was Noeleen Kavanagh with Rappstars
Social Stepper Geraldine Collins hot on her heels. The first couple home were Paddy and Karen Tull and the first under 18 male award went to Dylan McVeigh and Aoibhe Donohue and Amy Dalton came in first in the female under 18 category. The first woman walker was Mary Kearney and the first couple to walk in together were Jim and Bridget Kearney - the Kearneys looking very strong indeed! Our first granny home was Madeline Doran and the first grandad was our own Fiacre Ryan and the first family in with a dog were Mary, Ellie, Anna and Daisy Kavanagh. Master of Ceremonies and chief organiser Phil Kearney paid tribute to Michael and his family and called on his daughters Michelle and Ciara to present the prizes to the winners. Phil thanked all who helped including Bellefield GAA, Terri Foley and Majella Murphy for providing the delicious refreshments and all who
contributed spot prizes with special mention for the nametakers Maedhbh Foley and Gina Murphy and all those who participated in the event. This lovely annual occasion gives Michael’s family, friends and clubmates an opportunity to come together each year at this very special time to remember him and to link up with each other and rekindle fond friendships and relive old times. – Maria Nolan

Wexford Business Information Service The Wexford Business Information Service was officially launched in Wexford Library on Wednesday 19th November 2014 by An Cathaoirleach Malcolm Byrne. Monday 8th December was an exciting and proud day for Julie Breen, her family and staff as Retail Therapy presenter and former Superquinn owner Senator Feargal Quinn arrived to Enniscorthy to officiate at the opening of a second legal office for Julie Breen Solicitor based in Irish Street. Julie Breen having achieved success with her well established office in Ferns, has expanded to include a second office in her home town. Sen. Quinn spoke of his delight to be asked to launch the
office for Julie and was his entertaining self as he met fellow business owners, managers and local people at the celebrations imparting his words of wisdom with one and all. A large crowd attended with many from diverse backgrounds such as local businesses from Enniscorthy and Ferns, other legal professionals in Co. Wexford, members of the Enniscorthy Municipal District, senior politicians, friends and family. Julie spoke afterwards saying, “I am delighted with the

Minister Kehoe explained the return of the 'freedom box' to Co. Wexford, "The silver box was given to John Redmond, former leader of the Irish Parliamentary Party, when he was made a freeman of Wexford town in 1907. The freedom box, which has been acquired by the State from a private individual, will be held in Wexford County Council offices. "It is a further sign of the commitment of this government to mark the contribution made by John Redmond, as part of the Decade of Centenaries. The European Capital of Culture is designated by the European Union for a period of one calendar year during which the host city or region organises a series of cultural events with a strong European dimension. Preparing a European Capital of Culture can be an opportunity for the region to help foster urban and rural regeneration, change the region’s image and raise its visibility and profile on an international scale. The region has a strong offering of year-round festivals including Spraoi, Kilkenny
Arts Festival, Wexford Opera Festival, food festivals, as well as a host of year-round events celebrating the arts and literature. The South East has a richness and variety of heritage sites including Kilkenny Castle, the Irish National Heritage Park and the Dunbrody Heritage Ship, while enthusiasts flock to the Waterford Crystal Visitor Centre. The bid process is a oncein-a-generation opportunity to maximise the role of culture in society and to fully engage in ensuring that the potential of the region is reached and value is added which lasts for many years to come. n

This month, Joe Kavanagh, looks at radiation in the home. I've often wondered about the term 'Horse Whisperer’… It brings up some magical connotations of how someone can mysteriously be able to somehow communicate with horses and other animals for that matter. The film with Robert Redford was a classic example of how someone could get through to a horse which had some serious behavioural problems from a previous trauma. Slowly and patiently he was able to ease back the layers of fear to bring back the true essence of the horse... calm, and at peace with itself once again. Any illness can be considered the same... its a 'Dis-Ease'… There is usually an underlying reason why the animal is ill. The all encompassing one used with ourselves is 'stress'… Busy, frantic pace especially the weeks leading up to Christmas. For the animals they don't partake in the consumer whirlwind that seems to catch us every time but they are so sensitive creatures that other stresses hit them. One of the big ones in modern day living is radiation. What you and I take as the norm now… using your mobile phone, computer, laptop, tablet, microwave oven, wifi… and that's only inside the house... what about broadcasting towers, mobile phone towers, large power lines and transformers. We tend to leave the wifi always on in the house. This is a big source of low grade radiation hitting you, me and our magical little ones who can feel this coming right at them but can't do anything about it. We are told by the authorities that it’s an acceptable level of radiation but in truth there is no level of radiation good for us! In 20 years time they may well tell us that, yea, it wasn't understood well enough back then! There are different books written on the effects of this subject and has been highlighted by the debates on allowing power lines or phone masts on or through people’s land over the last few years. The veterinary surgeon Dr Richard Pitcairn is one of the few experts to lay stress on this issue and has written about it in his book 'Natural Health for Dogs and Cats’. He feels that in the case of animals suffering epilepsy, blood disorders, behavioural disturbances or any form of cancer, we should consider the possibility of radiation to be an exciting factor or possibly even a cause. One simple move is putting the wifi on a timer plug and definitely leaving it off at night! Becoming more aware of what’s actually going on all around us is the first place to start, and there are ways to counteract it too with remedies etc, but prevention is always better than cure... so remember to switch off rather than leave on all those electrical and mobile devices making this a healthier and happier new year for all of the little ones. We may not ever attain the heights of perception that our horse whisper friends can but doing the small things well is often enough to make the difference. Happy New Year to one and all. n

View from the Hill WelCome to 2015 It’s hard to believe that we have already reached 2015. Most people will not be sorry to see the back of the last few years of austerity and hardship. We must now hope for something better not only for 2015 but going forward beyond this year. In fairness, it must be said that in a macro sense the economy of the country is improving slowly but surely. All international experts predict that this country will overcome its difficulties and move on to a brighter future. Credit for this must go to the present government who inherited an unholy mess when they took office. We in Co. Wexford have two people who sit at the
Cabinet table – Brendan Howlin, Minister for Public Expenditure and Reform and Paul Kehoe, Government Chief Whip and Minister of State. This has to put us at the advantage at least of knowing what’s going on nationally and internationally. Hopefully, with their colleagues, their efforts will pull this country out of the mud and have us back on the road before too many more months have passed. Things will improve further when work commences on the huge infrastructural projects such as the Enniscorthy By Pass and the school extension programmes which have been given the go ahead recently. In fairness to both
Ministers Howlin and Kehoe I doubt very much that these jobs would have got the go ahead if Wexford had a lesser or non-existent presence at cabinet. The big problem for Brendan Howlin and Paul Kehoe is that people are understandably becoming extremely impatient with the long wait. The trickle down effect is taking too long and many families are running out of the will to keep going. Hopefully the budget changes which come in this month will help people significantly enough to make an impact for the better on their financial situation. Then and only then will the greater mass of people begin to believe that “Yes things will get better.” Christmas trading As a follow up to the above I think that it can be said Enniscorthy retailers in general had a reasonably good Christmas. I have no statistical data on this but in speaking to a lot of the shop owners and staff as I went around doing my own Christmas shopping there seemed to be a feeling that things are somewhat improving. Let’s hope that this trend continues.
the Weather So far this year, with the exception of a couple of days with white frost in the mornings, we have had a good mild spell of weather. Despite this, terror has been struck into the hearts of many by those so-called weather experts from afar with predictions of “Weather Bombs, Weather Vortex, etc.” which we are told will see Ireland under feet of snow and ice for months at a time. These individuals are bad enough in themselves but certain media outlets which carry these silly predictions are worse. Everyone knows that it is impossible to predict a weather event any more than seven to ten days in advance. This has been verified by the professionals like Evelyn Cusack at Met Eireann. The only thing that these sensational weather headlines achieve is to frighten vulnerable elderly people and the like who may start to believe such
rubbish. My advice is stick with Met Eireann and even at that don’t be too concerned about this new system of coloured alerts. Most of this is for technical reasons and if you have reached a certain age you can be sure that nothing will face you in the future that you haven’t seen and dealt with in the past. Christmas television Christmas television was the usual boring fare. Nothing stands out as being good, much less great. The tripe served up in those soaps was truly disgusting, particularly Eastenders, and I think it’s time for the powers in our TV channels to move that stuff to adult viewing times. It’s outrageous that these storylines are being churned out at times when very young children are still in sitting rooms and watching and listening. Some children will grow up thinking that life as depicted in these soaps is real and is a pointer as to how they are expected to lead their lives. Of course sensible people will record these programmes and look at them after children have gone to bed but I fear they are in a minority. Maybe the advent of UTV will encourage TV3 and RTE to
make some genuine Irish programmes and get away from the dreaded soaps and American canned stuff which now seems to dominate everything. Christmas Wish A couple of weeks before Christmas I had the two grandsons for a sleepover to give their parents a chance to do certain things before Santa arrived. As I got them organised for bed I mentioned that it would be a good idea if they said a little prayer to ensure that the good Lord would ensure that Santa brought them the presents which they had asked for. As they prayed I waited outside the door. Suddenly one of them began to pray very loudly, “ Dear Lord ask Santa to bring me a playstation, a bike and a surprise.” The other fellow asked him, “Why are you shouting. Jesus isn’t deaf.” “I know“, says the genius, “But Grandad is.” and Finally… Happy New Year to all readers of this column and Slaney News in general. the Wexford supporters/glen Fuels Player of the year awards were launched at the riverside Park hotel on Friday 2nd Jan as nominees in all 7 categories gathered together along with County Chairman diarmuid devereux, Chairman arthur Quinn and members of the supporters Club, sponsors alan and Kevin Keyes of glen Fuels, members of the ladies Football, Camogie and handball boards to recognise and award excellence in all our national games. MC for the event, the effervescent Mr. Liam Spratt, congratulated all those nominated and thanked them for the wonderful year they had all given us in 2014. The Awards Night he said is our chance to acknowledge and appreciate what these great sports men and women have given to and for their clubs and county over the past year. Such is the extent of their commitment that many of the nominated hurlers and footballers had to leave early to be in St.
Patrick’s Park and elsewhere for training sessions at 7.30pm. We might do well to remember this the next time we are about to criticise – while we were all still very much enjoying the festive period these young amateurs were back in training preparing to entertain us once again in yet another GAA season.

as 2014 has drawn to a close, the time has come once again to reflect on the sporting year that has passed. Racing795 has continued to grow in numbers, and continued to foster and promote the club's ethos of participation and improvement. Once again, perhaps the most pleasing element of the club's growth has been the arrival of new members across the spectrum of triathlon, mountain biking and running. But 2014 has been unique for two reasons. Firstly, out of a membership of 52, this year saw nine members compete in and complete, what perhaps is the ultimate challenge in triathlon – the Ironman. Nine members, seven in Roth, Germany, one in Port Macquarie,
Australia and one on home turf in Killarney wore the Racing795 jersey with pride through heat, exhaustion and nerves. Secondly, 2014 was the first year since 2009 that the club didn’t hold a major triathlon or mtb event. A year to recharge the batteries and reflect on events to come. We are delighted to say that Racing795 will return to hosting events next year, with Tri795 Sprint Distance Triathlon in Carlow in May and the Mt Leinster Mtb Challenge in August. The members continued to blaze a trail both nationally and internationally during the year. The mountain bikers, triathletes and runners travelled the length and breadth of Ireland competing. Again in 2014 the club had interna-
tional representative honours, for the fourth year since the club's inception. The challenge that lies ahead for Racing795 in 2015 is to ensure that it continues to grow and that the club remains an enthusiastic group, where new members are encouraged and welcomed in equal measure. The market for city cars has never been huge here but there are signs that it is growing. There are lots to choose from like the Volkswagen Up!, SEAT Mii, SKODA Citigo, Hyundai i10 and Toyota Aygo. Any new competitors really need to do a lot to stand out from the crowd. So what have Renault done with their new Twingo? While everyone else is making front wheel drive city cars with the engine under the bonnet, Renault has put the engine in the boot and made the Twingo rear wheel drive! There’s logic behind it. With no engine to be accommodated under the bonnet, the overall length of the car can be made shorter. You’ll be glad of that when parking. There’s no engine block getting in the way of the front wheels as they turn so the wheels turn more giving the Twingo the smallest turning circle in the city car class. It’s great for getting out of tight parking spots or if you need to turn around quickly in a tight space or street. The third major reason for the unusual layout is to make the cabin roomier because you can make the wheelbase longer while

Renault Twingo keeping the overall length of the car short by pushing the wheels out to the corners. This is a small car remember but it is impressively roomy inside for its size and nicely finished. One of the potential downsides of putting the engine in the boot is that it will use up valuable boot space. While the tiny 1.0 litre engine is tucked neatly under the boot floor, it’s certainly not the biggest boot you will find in a city car, but it is a very practical shape and the space is accessed at arm level so you can slide things in or out easily over a flat sill. It’s a fun little car to drive especially in town where the 1.0 litre 70bhp petrol engine feels its perkiest. The Twingo is more suited to short journeys in and around town than long distance runs, where the tiny engine will run out of steam. It’s not immediately obvious that you are being pushed along by the rear wheels though
the engine whir behind your ears reminds you that the engine is in the boot. Electronic stability control will keep those rear wheels in check so the rear engined, rear wheel drive layout is more about the practical reasons I’ve outlined above than driving thrills. There are three trim levels, Expression, Play and Dynamique but the mid-range Play is a good one to go for and comes in at €14,590 with the 1.0 litre 70bhp engine fitted as standard. There is also a turbocharged 1.0 litre engine for the Twingo with more power and marginally better economy but that is only available if you go for the top level Dynamique trim and at over €16,000, that looks expensive for a small car. Cute as a button, a little bit sporty and boasting amazing manouvrability for hassle free town driving, the Twingo is a great option for a small, cheap,

JOHN Kelly I bumped into local poet, John Kelly, recently in Joe Doyle’s pub and he gave me a signed copy of his book ”Gathering the Dead in the Garden”. I am not a lover of poetry but I was impressed by his poems and I would put him in the same class as W.B. Yeats or Shelley. For the second album sessions the Revelator Orchestra were joined by Paula Cox, whose vocal arrangements and composing and arranging skills brought new dimensions of melody, colour and light to the process. Now a three-piece, they began playing the new material live, honing their set into something less like a musical performance than a 3D graphic novel, or as one observer put it: “Tom Waits meets Twin Peaks.” The Brotherhood of the Flood defies categorisation. The Revelator Orchestra will steal anything because they listen to everything: primal rock ‘n’ roll, trance, folk, ambient, film scores, you name it. This is the end product of a collective thirty-year obsession with sound. Murphy (who’s been known to don black feathered wings and eyeliner and crawl across tables and howl like a werewolf during live shows), played drums with The Tulips and Grasshopper before carving out a

career as a writer and journalist, profiling the likes of Lou Reed, James Ellroy, William Gibson and more. His first novel John the Revelator was published to worldwide hosannas in 2009: Shall We Gather at the River followed four years later, establishing him out as one of Ireland’s most uncompromising and original writers. As for the other two, Acko, the band’s musical backbone and evil genius, is equally skilled as a songwriter, composer, recording engineer and producer, while Miss Cox was lead singer with The Bush, the Tree, and Me, signed to Sony at the turn of the millennium, and who counted Blur, The Strokes and Jarvis Cocker among their fans. Collectively, they make for a fullon live experience.
We at Slaney News like to see all businesses in our town do well and we especially like to see new businesses being set up. We like to see them do well, big or small. In the past year Enniscorthy has had a few businesses close their doors – some for good and some for a short period of time. Padraic donohoe of donohoe motor salvage has opened up impressive new offices and a motor factors shop on the site of the old Alcast factory in Clonhaston. aoife murphy has opened her own hair salon called Cutting edge Curls in a premises previously occupied by Dessie Sheehan. If you want your hair cut, styled or coloured Aoife is located opposite the old courthouse. Her clientele are both male and female and children are also very welcome. You can check Aoife’s styles on her Facebook page. Best of luck Aoife. Everybody likes a cup of coffee or tea or an all-day breakfast. Well recently local
confectioner Mervyn Cooney took over the Baked Potato premises on Rafter Street and renamed it my Café. Best of luck to the Cooney family with their new venture. A n o t h e r c o ff e e s h o p which opened up a few days before Christmas is the little spoon. This coffee shop is managed by Barry Whelan. The food is not pre-cooked – it is prepared fresh daily. The meat is supplied from the local butchers in Enniscorthy. Best of luck Barry. I can’t close this column without mentioning two coffee shops I frequent regularly. Now preparing for their fourth year serving the public is the wonderful Cotton tree café. In September impresso opened its doors under Joy Rothwell’s ownership. If you’re in town and fancy a hot chocolate then try Impresso’s caramel hot chocolate or the butterscotch hot chocolate. It takes people a few minutes to get their heads around us: ‘Is this a rock ‘n’ roll band or a weird theatre troupe or a spoken word act?’ One thing I love about Bowie and Tom Waits and Iggy is the way they draw on inspiration from outside music, from books and theatre and film. When bands only reference other bands they become inbred. The three of us are curious about everything. Acko’s watched more movies than any other person I’ve ever met. I’m a writer. Paula’s got a track record in everything from pop to choral music: she’s sung in Carnegie Hall for godsakes. It all goes into the cauldron. Festive FOCAL in Enniscorthy thank you to all who supported our Festive Coffee mornings at stamps on 13th dec and robbies on 20th dec and all those who bought lines for our wonderful hampers complete with wine, chocs, nuts, scented candles and 4 books signed by Wexford authors – eoin Colfer, Carmel harrington, Paul o’Brien and andrew hughes. All proceeds raised will go to fund our 2015 Festival to
make it an even greater success than last year. Congratulations to first drawn winner, Catherine Hourican. It was wonderful that Catherine had just "popped" in to Robbies to support the morning tea and purchased the winning line! It was also lovely to hear that she so loves Christmas in Enniscorthy that, even though now living in Co, Kildare, she came with her family to shop for Christmas!
Local woman Cathy Keane of Bualadh Bus was the second drawn. She also had just ‘popped in’ to show her support of all things FOCAL. Cathy has been a staunch advocate of FOCAL from the outset and we are always delighted to see her and her camera. Mary McManus, our third raffle winner, purchased her lucky line at Byrnes Bookstore. It has been an exceptional first year for FOCAL kicking off with a most successful Festival in June and continuing to support and promote local writers and poets throughout the year including Carmel Harrington, Andrew Hughes, Joe Neal and Paul O’Brien hosting their book launches at Enniscorthy Castle and the Spiegeltent respectively. Enniscorthy has now become synonymous with a Literary Festival and one of Enniscorthy’s most famous sons, Colm Toibin, has agreed to lend his name to a Short Story Award details of which will be announced in 2015 and FOCAL are also planning to launch a Celebrity Travel Log with a unique Wexford flavour at our 2015 Festival in June along with amazing Workshops, Book Launches, Poetry Readings, Film Productions and Open Mic Events. So it is onward and upward for both Enniscorthy and FOCAL in 2015. Can we take this opportunity to thank you all again for your support and recognition in 2014. Ho Ho Ho… as the curtain comes down on another year the members of enniscorthy drama group would like to thank the people of enniscorthy and its environs for the wonderful support received throughout 2014. It has been a remarkable year for the newly formed group who took the decision to run with two summer plays at the beautiful Presentation Centre - in June the hilarious comedy Tom, Dick and Harry directed by our Chairman Colum Coomey and in August the excellent Glengarry, Glen Ross directed by committee member Jamie Murphy, both playing to full houses every night. Following on from that we decided to take another excel-
lent play Pvt. Wars on the One Act Circuit in November and were delighted with the response to it. Coupled with the success of each of the productions we as a committee have been doubly delighted with the discovery of new and exciting talent in the form of local lads Podge Dwyer and Fintan Kelly and equally proud of the success of one of our actors Nic Furlong on the international scene as he makes his mark as far away as Los Angeles. We wish all our actors the very best for the coming season and we look forward to continued support and endorsement from the people of Enniscorthy and beyond in 2015. Poetry in Blue - Joe Neal launches latest collections

a most excellent event at enniscorthy Castle on thursday 11th dec as the debonair Welsh poet Joe neal launched his Collections – telling It at a Slant and his latest Now turn the tide. Hosted by FOCAL, Wexford’s Literary Festival, which nurtures and encour-
ages new and existing local authors and poets and promotes their work. As a member of FOCAL I was thrilled to launch the night and introduce that Welsh Wizard of Words - Joe Neal. An extraordinarily gifted man who has been living at Edenvale, Castlebridge, for
the past 20 odd years Joe is an enigma – a poet, author, journalist and broadcaster appearing on stage, radio and television in two jurisdictions – Ireland and Britain. He has had his own touring Theatre Company and has worked in London for the Times, the Guardian, the Daily Telegraph, the Daily Express and the BBC. He has also sat as a Magistrate in London’s adult and juvenile courts. He taught drama, media studies, English and adult literacy. Being a glutton for punishment and believing in equality and fairness, he stood twice for parliament in Britain and once in Ireland for the EU. Along with prestigious acting awards he has also received major environmental awards again in both Britain and Ireland and writes extensively on the countryside and natural history. And in his spare time,
mind you, I believe he enjoys painting, jazz trombone, skiing, scuba diving, fly fishing and climbing in his native North Wales. I am far from a connoisseur of poetry but as with wine I do know what I like and I particularly like Joe’s work which is warm, humorous, eloquent, nostalgic, romantic and moving which to my mind can best be described as delicious Welsh Rarebit. Joe’s words are vivid, colourful, descriptive, elegant, tender and emotive with a compelling rhythm that appeals to my Celtic ear and a subtle melody that captivates my Irish soul. The highest compliment I can give to his poems is that I thought they were about my life.”

Christmas is blossoming throughout the city bulbs bursting into orange, red and green, reminds me of past winters. My thoughts are travelling down the pined Blackstairs mountains, blanched to Alpine fantasy and our village choir shuffling hand-printed Christmas cards on cue to organ drone. They used to harness their carts and jaunting cars, and drive to early mass. Leaving their horses to champ the frozen grass in the village churchyard, Still in winter darkness. On homeward trot over untarred lanes and roads we tarried our goodbyes as they trotted to unfettered time, took a chilly breath and continued their climb. Kavanagh’s tilly lamp and pot-bellied stove, strove to warm our hands to better finger and select tinselled Christmas cards scattered in a wooden box, we tip-toed to reach our choice with seldom matching envelopes. n

dating a Farmer by Lorna Sixsmith lorna Sixsmith is an author living in Carlow who writes entertaining pieces such as this one… Dating a farmer may not, at first glance, seem that different to dating someone in any other occupation but it’s the one occupation where work can be combined with a date – often with surprising and unexpected results for those unused to farming ways. What dating a farmer involves: 1. tractor dates – He’s going to be busy at certain times
of the year so getting used to ‘tractor dates’ is a requirement. This means that if you want to see him at all, you will need to get used to being perched on the passenger seat of the tractor. It will still be romantic though as you drive across the field towards the setting sun on the horizon – it brings a whole new meaning to driving off into the sunset together! 2. Farm Picnics – When he is working long hours in the fields, it can happen that he
considers himself too busy to drive back to the house for meals so you can surprise him with a farm picnic. What could be nicer than sitting on a grassy or stubbly field with the tractor wheel as a backrest as you gaze at the beautiful countryside? 3. midwifery skills – It often seems to happen that a cow will decide to calve just as he is leaving to collect you for a date or that you both have to leave an event early to check on her. Despite any
disappointment, that will all disappear when you witness the birth of new life together and watch a newborn calf wobble around on its shaky legs. 4. Field Walks – A walk across the fields is rarely just a walk, it’s usually for the purposes of herding cattle, bringing in cows, moving sheep or grass measuring. It’s still possible to multi-task and pretend it’s a romantic walk across a flower strewn meadow – just use your imagination!

as rapparees/starlights gaa Club held their annual general meeting on sunday 30th november it was the end of an era for both myself and the club if you like as i stepped down as secretary after 20 years service in the position. and what can i say after 20 years except that it has been absolutely fabulous. Bellefield has been a way of life for me for the past 20 years and beyond – it was 24/7
for me at times as my husband Jim and my family can verify but it’s been so worth it for all the experience I have had, all the wonderful people I have met both inside and outside the club and all the sheer passion and enjoyment of it. I would like to take this opportunity to thank my late father Martin Doyle for passing on the tradition to me – not just the GAA tradition but the tradition of being involved
and playing your part. I’d like to feel that I played my part to the very best of my ability and served the club and county well in my term in office. I would like to thank Donal Minnock for bringing me in as Secretary – if it hadn’t been for Donal I might never have had the wonderful times that I have enjoyed over the past 20 years. I have served five Club Chairmen in the time since – John Browne, Michael Doyle, Pat Hall, Michael Collins and Padraig Hall. I would like to thank my husband Jim and my family for all their support and encouragement for both me and Bellefield – I don’t think that we have had a family event over
20 years that didn’t happen at Bellefield. I would like to thank all the wonderful people that I have met, the friends I have made and all the good people that I have worked with in that 20 years. I would particularly like to thank the players for all the passion, excitement and enjoyment that I have had with them on 20 years of sidelines – and I have the photos to prove it! I would like to thank Wexford County Board and all the friends that I have made there over the years – I have worked with five County Chairmen in that period and got on really well with all of them – Paddy Wickham, Seamus Howlin, Sean Quirke, Ger Doyle
and Diarmuid Devereux. I would like to pay tribute to all the friends that I have made in all the clubs around the county so much so that some of them have told me that if I am at a loose end that they would take me in as Secretary – but as you all know my loyalty is only to one club and to one club only!
