comment With work on a major extension to St Aidan’s Primary School progressing rapidly, now comes the news that An Bord Pleanala has granted permission, with conditions, to St Senan’s Primary School, Enniscorthy, in relation to a major school extension. The development works will consist of the erection of a new two-storey extension to existing primary school with a gross floor area of 1,710 square metres. We carry full details on page 11. With Spring in the air Enniscorthy’s committed Tidy Towns Committee is already working hard on making the town look as pristine as possible. We, in the Slaney News, would appeal to all residents and businesses in the town to row in behind the committee to ensure Enniscorthy is litter free and attractive for what we hope will be a busy summer of festivals and tourism in the town. Another dedicated committee is the one that puts on the annual St Patrick’s Day Parade in Enniscorthy – one of the best parades, for a town our size, in the country. Well done to all involved with this great work every year. – Frank Corcoran

Vinegar Hill residents stand against anti-social behaviour Residents of Enniscorthy’s historic Vinegar Hill community are taking a stand against a wide range of anti-social behaviour which is destroying their quality of life. The residents are committed to improving their community in seven key areas: 1. Speeding/Racing/Other Road Traffic Issues. 2. Theft and Criminal Damage. 3. P h y s i c a l a n d Ve r b a l Intimidation and Sexual Assault. 4. Late Night Noise. 5. Loose and Stray Animals. 6. Illegal Dumping/State of Environment. 7. Lack of Response by the Authorities to the above. A number of meetings have been held since the start of 2015 leading to the creation of an Action Group to enable the residents collectively communicate with the relevant authorities. The new Vinegar Hill Residents Action Group represents concerned residents in Upper Shannon, Drumgoold, Gimont, Cooladine, Salville, Esmonde Road,

Rifles, pikes and cannon Enniscorthy Historic & Re-enactment Society added colour and pageantry to both the Bunclody and Enniscorthy Parades on St. Patrick’s Day. It was a first for Bunclody to have Volunteers, Pikemen and Redcoats at their Paddy’s Day celebrations and according to Bunclody native and Chairperson of the Enniscorthy Municipal District Barbara-Anne Murphy they certainly brought a new dimension to the proceedings. Barbara-Anne thanked the group who were only too delighted to participate and broaden their scope bringing re-enactment to the streams of Bunclody. From there it was back into Enniscorthy where the re-enactors were joined by finely clad members of FOCAL – Wexford’s Literary Festival, and Strawberry Fayre participants looking splendid in costume with Amelia Harrington as Queen Meadhbh and her brother, Nate, playing a youthful Cuchulainn and Anne Gilpin playing, appropriately enough, Edmund Spenser’s Faerie Queen. They were accompanied by our beautiful Strawberry Queen, Ciara Butler, elegantly escorted by the debonair Donal

Cullen. This motley crew were followed by Irish Volunteers and members of Cumann na mBan, the cannon from Enniscorthy Men’s Shed and bringing up the rear were Pikemen, women, children and of course the obligatory Redcoats. All in all a very colourful and ceremonial display. In front of the dignitaries on the bandstand our re-enactors staged a skirmish between Redcoat and Rebel and the cannon was fired creating a bit of a stir among the spectators. Enniscorthy Historic & Reenactment Society was delighted to be invited to Bunclody and it has a full schedule of events planned over the next couple of months leading into 2016 with our next venture on Easter Monday when we will march from St. Aidan’s Cathedral to Market Square and stage a 1916 battle between the Volunteers and the RIC Barracks. This of course will be a trial run for 2016 and we hope that there will be a large crowd out to see it. On 24th April members of our group will be involved with a reenactment and a parade through town for Republic Day. On the Monday of the May

Volunteers, Pikemen and Redcoats on the streets of Bunclody. Pic: Maria Nolan.

Bank Holiday weekend our reenactors are delighted to announce that we have been invited to do a re-enactment at Wells House which we are really looking forward to and in June some of our members are taking part in the 200th anniversary of the Battle of Waterloo in Belgium with over 20,000 spectators expected. It’s all action at the moment and all about taking Enniscorthy Historic & Re-enactment Society further afield to promote and advertise the town of Enniscorthy and of course make people aware of and encourage them to come to our town and our re-enactment weekend in August. – Maria Nolan

Approximately 85 people turned up to the Riverside Park Hotel on Thursday 19th March for a public meeting for relatives of the 1916 Volunteers and other interested parties. The purpose of the evening was to find out how people, particularly relatives, would like to see the 1916 Rising commemorated in Enniscorthy and Wexford. County Librarian Fionnuala Hanrahan opened proceedings welcoming all and outlining the night’s schedule, beginning with County Archivist, Grainne Doran, giving a detailed account of events planned to date including the 1916 Letters Project to be held at Enniscorthy Library on 16th April seeking letters and photographs from the period 1st November 2015 through to 1st October 2016. A 1916 Lecture and Archives Road Show during Heritage Week – 22nd-30th August, three historical lectures and workshops in October to coincide with the Opera Festival and the launch of the 1916 Schools Pack in November along with the launch of a new commemorative website. On 1st January 2016 a Choral Concert in St. Aidan’s Cathedral with four adult choirs. In March four plays will be staged at The Presentation Centre written by James Connolly, Padraig Pearse, Joseph McDonagh and Terence MacSwiney. Leading up to Easter, Aileen Lambert will host a special Song Project at

The Presentation Centre. Padraig O’Gorman informed the gathering that €30,000 had been allocated to each local authority to begin planning events and it was hoped that Enniscorthy would be one of the designated areas of special interest to receive extra funding. He said that there would be a parade and a reenactment at Enniscorthy and the purpose of the evening was to ascertain what else might be part of the 2016 Programme. The audience was then asked to gather around ten tables to discuss the following questions: 1. What are the values that we want to enshrine in our Commemoration of the 1916 Rising? 2. How should we commemorate the contribution of all the participants in the Rising? 3. In County Wexford what approach should we adopt to the ceremonial aspects of the commemoration? 4. How do we want to address this aspect of our culture with young people? 5. What legacy do we want this commemoration to leave for future generations? Following extensive and lively debate lasting approximately 45 minutes the table facilitators gave the findings under the headings to the meeting with some very interesting, innovative, inclusive and inspirational ideas emerging including commemorative parks

and gardens with memorial walls, to declaring a national Republic Day, to a national minute’s silence around the country, to ecumenical services, historical trails, cultural concerts, exhibitions of military weaponry, to 2016 League Final at Wexford Park, to inclusive reenactments with all agreeing that the Athenaeum should play a prominent role whatever shape or form commemorations take with speeches on the steps and a re-enactment of the hoisting of the tricolour on the roof. All tables felt that truth was the most important element and that we should see things as they were not as we would like them to have been and our commemorations should be about acceptance and pride without apology or triumphalism. Fionnuala Hanrahan wrapped up thanking all for attending. All the information gathered would be compiled over the coming weeks and circulated in the form of a newsletter to participants. It was a most worthwhile exercise and fantastic to hear that so much was already being planned and organised with the first event this Easter Monday with Mass at St. Aidan’s Cathedral at 10am followed by a Parade to Market Square, ceremonies, then a re-enactment being performed by Enniscorthy Historic & Re-enactment Society. – Maria Nolan

Sports clubs – Apply NOW for funding Minister Paul Kehoe has welcomed a further €40m in Sports Capital funding announced last month. Minister Kehoe said: “The return of the Sports Capital Programme in 2012 has seen €2,169,520 in funding granted to clubs across County Wexford. The new state-of-the-art Cherry O rc h a rd r u n n i n g t r a c k i n Enniscorthy received €150,000 in funding. Other clubs in the area to receive funding include Adamstown Athletic Club, Oulart the Ballagh, Shamrocks Hurling & Football Club, Duncannon FC, Hook Sub Aqua Club, New Ross Town Football Club and St James’ GAA Club amongst others. “This is the third round of Sports Capital funding that has been made available under this Government. The Programme…

will facilitate successful applicants in carrying out essential works on pitches and facilities such as clubhouses and dressing rooms. It will also provide for the purchase of new equipment which will help people to play their chosen sport to the best of their ability, increasing the chances of them reaching their full potential. This further reinforces the positive impact that sport has on communities from a physical and a social perspective. “I would encourage all those who are interested to ensure that they are registered on the online system before 5pm on Friday, 10th April 2015 (if not already registered) and to get their applications in online at www.sportscapitalprogramme.ie before 5pm on Friday, 24th April 2015.” n

essentiaL software part 3 OK so it’s time for our final piece on essential software, let’s begin… The high-profile hack attacks of the past few years have driven the point home: You need strong passwords, and you need a different password for each site you visit. Rather than juggling dozens of alphanumeric codes in your noggin, download a password manager. We recommend Dashlane, LastPass, or KeePass. Let them do the grunt work for you. In today’s multidevice world, cloud syncing and storage services are practically a must-have, as they allow you to pick up where you left off no matter which PC, phone, or tablet you’re working on. Transylvania is a truly beautiful and unspoiled region. It is home to Europe’s best preserved medieval towns. We will be based for 5 nights in Sibiu (European Capital of Culture in 2007) with its cobblestone streets and ancient squares. Sibiu was recently voted by Forbes as the 8th most idyllic place in the world to live. Transylvania’s heritage (Romanian, German and Hungarian) is delightfully apparent in the folk costumes, architecture, cuisine, music and festivals. People here still work as shepherds, weavers, blacksmiths, etc. Small family-owned shops offer antiques and fine handmade products by local artisans at really low prices. This tour will appeal to those who want to try something completely different from the usual mass tourist destinations.

Cuts to Wexford Drugs Squad local Fianna Fáil TD, John Browne, has slammed dramatic cuts to Wexford’s dedicated drugs squad with the numbers of gardaí fighting d r u g c r i m e i n We x f o r d slashed from eleven officers in 2011 to just one officer last year according to new figures obtained by Fianna Fáil. The figures were released by the Minister for Justice Frances Fitzgerald in response to a Parliamentary Question from Fianna Fáil. They show drastic cuts to the number of gardaí assigned to garda drugs units across the country over the past three years. Overall, more a total of 108 officers have been pulled from garda drugs squads nationally since

2011. The cuts are particularly bad in Co Wexford, which has seen its garda drugs squad decimated over the three years. Wexford Deputy John Browne has hit out at the ‘disgraceful cuts’ which he says are happening at a time of escalating drug crime in our communities. “Unfortunately you don’t have to look very hard to see the increasing prevalence of drugs on our streets in towns a n d v i l l a g e s a c ro s s t h e Southeast. It’s heart-breaking to see more and more young people in particular fall victim to drugs,” said Deputy Browne. “Meanwhile our communities have suffered a spike

in drug-related crime, from burglaries to anti-social behaviour and all too blatant drug dealing. There is no doubt that the drugs problem in our communities is increasing and the gardaí are being severely hampered in their ability to prevent and investigate drugrelated crime due to drastic cuts to their resources. “Instead of tackling the drugs crisis head on, this Government is doing the opposite by turning a blind eye and diverting resources away from dedicated drugs taskforces at community level. How is it acceptable to leave the entire Wexford garda division with just one solitary garda officer dedicated to investigating and tackling

drug crime. When this Government got into power four years ago, we had 11 officers on the taskforce. Now that’s been whittled away to nothing. “Fine Gael’s hands-off approach to tackling drug crime and the associated crime in our communities must stop. Resources have been cut to the bone. I am calling for the immediate reinstatement of a fullystaffed Garda Drugs Unit in Co. Wexford. I am also calling for the reinstatement of a Minister for Drugs – a position abolished by Fine Gael – to oversee a crackdown on drug-related crime and the implementation of proper supports for victims of drug abuse," said Deputy Browne. n

The talks, organised by St. Aidan's Cathedral Pastoral Council and Ferns C.A.F.E, ran over three weeks, with a different speaker each week

speaking about the themes of Lent. Fr. Peter McVerry spoke about compassion and almsgiving and gave an insight into his work with the homeless in Dublin. A collection was taken up on the night and €989 was raised for this worthy cause. Fr. McVerry was extremely grateful for this generosity. S r. B e r n a d e t t e P u r c e l l , Chaplain IT Tallaght, spoke about fasting, whilst Fr. Joe White, who is currently based at the adoration monastery in Ferns, spoke about 'Aspects and Stories of Faith and Prayer'. The three talks covered the themes of Lent. Many thanks to the excellent speakers for helping to enrich our Lenten journey. ________________________ Good wishes to Billy Caulfield who is studying for the priesthood and who has been on 'work experience' in St. Aidan's Cathedral for the past six months. St Senan’s Primary School

Permission granted for St Senan’s school extension On 5th March 2015 An Bord Pleanala granted permission, with conditions, to St Senan’s Primary School, Enniscorthy, in relation to a major school extension. The works had originally been granted permission, subject to conditions, by Wexford County Council on 1st October 2014 but that decision was appealed by the Father Murphy Close/Father Murphy Park Residents Committee. The development works, which will now proceed, consist of the erection of a new twostorey extension to existing primary school with a gross floor area of 1,710 square metres comprising at ground floor – four classroom special needs unit, general purpose hall and ancillary accommodation, and at first floor – four classrooms, library, extension to the existing staff room, special education rooms, offices and link to the existing school buildings. Alteration works to existing buildings including subdivision of library at lower ground floor to provide two special education rooms, sub-division of classroom at ground floor to provide Vice Principal’s office and special education room, subdivision of classroom at ground floor to provide three special education rooms, alterations to existing store and servery to form special education room. Site development works include the re-alignment and extension of front boundary walls and railings onto Father Murphy Park and Father Murphy Close to accommodate a new set-down area with access from Father Murphy Close, new staff car park, new internal site access road connecting to the upper playground, re-configured external play areas, new access ramps and external staircases, new boundary walls, railings and gates, hard and soft landscaping works, new site lighting, con-

nections to public services and new ESB package sub-station. For the duration of the construction works twelve temporary classrooms will be provided on the existing playfield at the northern perimeter of the site with associated temporary play area, perimeter security fence and temporary service access from Father Murphy Close. In making its decision An Bord Pleanála said, “ Having regard to the nature of the proposed development, to the established use of the subject lands as a school and to the zoning of the site it is considered that the proposed development, subject to compliance with the conditions set out below, would not seriously

injure the residential or visual amenities of the area, would be acceptable in terms of traffic safety and convenience and would, therefore, be in accordance with the proper planning and sustainable development of the area… the Board considered that the proposed development was acceptable in view of the established status of the school use at the subject location and the nature of the current proposal which seeks to replace temporary student accommodation without any intensification of use. The Board further considered that the quantum of remaining public open space was acceptable in the context of the low density nature of the surrounding suburban environment and that the proposals regarding traffic management were likely to result in an improvement over the current arrangements. Finally, in the context of assessing the likely impacts on views to and from Vinegar Hill, the Board noted and accepted the Inspector's views regarding the general acceptability of the proposed development.” A timescale for the works is not yet in place but with over 130 pupils currently being taught in portakabins the school is keen to progress the project as soon as possible. n

JAMIE’S GOOD NEWS By the time you set your eyes on this dear reader, the box office will be up and running for enniscorthy Musical society’s production of wizard of oz in Colaiste Bride. If you haven’t been up yet, make it your business to get up!!!! Last year was a sold-out run of Grease. I am genuinely excited about this year because, well it’s oz. What is not to love? Munchkins, two women ultimately fighting over a pair of shiny shoes, cracking songs, one of the greatest villains ever…. Oh and we have a real life Toto……. If I haven’t sold you on it yet, there is no helping you. Show opens on the 7th of April and runs through until Saturday the 11th which is a matinee performance!!!! Go!!!! THE VOICE I will admit that from a purely visual and technical standpoint, the Irish version of the Voice looks like a poor relation that only turns up at Christmas and eats all your sweets compared to its UK counterpart. The performers (which are a pretty high calibre to be fair) are hampered by poor direction, lifeless audiences, a general sense of “Ah, it’s grand!” on the producer’s part. And well we don’t have no tom Jones. And no tom Jones is an automatic fail. Before you mail in to say but we

View From The Nosebleeds have Bressie and Kian egan, I’m going to stop you before you start, tom Jones. Your argument is invalid. Anyway, I digress. This year we had two Wexford representatives, Helena Bradley Bates and sasha sangari smith who were equally amazing but sadly one lost out in the live Knock Outs. sasha stormed her way through a faultless rendition of take a

Little Piece of My Heart and the other local representative Helena delivered a great rendition of i want to Know what Love is. Sadly, and in my opinion wrongly, sasha lost out and was gone. I caught up with Sasha last week and asked her a few questions. First of all, commiserations on being voted off. How did you find your time on the Voice? Thanks very much. Oh it was

fantastic. It was hard work but a once in a lifetime experience. Learned so much and met lifelong friends. I loved every minute of it. Was it something you always wanted to do, sing and perform? Yeah definitely, I've been singing and performing since I was 3 years old. I even sang on FM104 when I was 5... Do you intend to pursue a career in singing? I intend to work hard to pursue a music career. I was going to focus more so on getting my degree, but I'm hungry for the stage now and think the degree can wait! You did a storming rendition of Janis Joplin's "Take A Little Piece Of My Heart", is she a big influence, that big vocal style? Yeah Janis Joplin would be an influence for me. I love big power-house singers like Aretha Franklin, Christina Aguilera, Tina Turner, Celine Dion and so on. But I also love the likes of

Sasha Sangari Smith

Demi Lovato and some big rock singers like Lizzy Hale from Halestorm also. My influences have a huge range in variety.... You look very rock and roll, is that your favourite genre or are you open to others? I like a lot of different genres of music from rock to pop to country to Hip-Hop. But my style always tends to be a rock look even though I like all kinds of music... What have you got in the pipeline now? I have some things lined up in the near future and I intend to become very busy musically. Also plan on getting involved with some mental health organisations too.

And finally, where can people find out more? People can find me on Facebook and Instagram Sasha Sangari S m i t h a n d o n Tw i t t e r SashaxxACTL.. Before you depart dear reader, if you’re at a loose end on the 21st of April, there is a fashion show with a difference taking place in the riverside Park Hotel. Tickets are a mere €5 and are available from various outlets around town. Also by contacting Joe doyle – your man that do be near the back of this paper!! There are also musical acts on the night, sinead Haze, Marie Gordon, sharon sara rooney and Jamie & Kerry. See you all there!!!! n

Chess Masterpiece The hugely talented and multiaward winning Wexford Light Opera Society will be presenting CHESS The Musical in the National Opera House, Wexford, from Monday the 27th April to Saturday the 2nd May nightly at 8pm. The Society last performed the show in the old Theatre Royal, Wexford, 18 years ago in 1997 to great acclaim. CHESS is a tough show both vocally and technically and many hours of rehearsals are going into making it another hit for WLOS. The production team is the same for the Society's last two very successful productions: "The Witches of Eastwick" and "Sister Act" (which was booked out completely before it even opened last year), namely Director – John Donnelly, Musical D i r e c t o r – F i n t a n C l e a r y, Choreographer – Nicole McDonald and Chorus Mistress – Eithne Corrigan. The talented cast for this production features Tony Carty, Aileen Donohoe, Derek Collins, Naoimh Penston, Des Whelan, George Lawlor and Eric Hayes. Booking commences from 13th April at WLOS House, High St., Wexford. Telephone 053-9174808. Special reduction for group bookings. This is definitely a show NOT TO BE MISSED! n

CU Factor Final The final of the local Credit Union Factor Talent Competition 2015 will take place on Saturday 11th April in the Riverside Park Hotel, Enniscorthy. n

Film and television director Declan Lowney attended the The Picture House to receive the 2014/15 Fellowship of the Wexford Film Society. First announced at the season launch last October in the Wexford Arts Centre, this was the first opportunity the Englishbased Wexford man was able to return to his hometown to collect the honour. The annual award honours Wexford people who have distinguished themselves in the world of film, with Declan joining Billy Roche (for screenwriting), actor Gary Lydon and production designer John Paul Kelly in the Fellowship. The two-time Bafta winner has helmed many hit TV shows including ‘Father Ted’, ‘Cold Feet’, ‘Little Britain’ and more recently, ‘Moone Boy’. Declan made his movie debut in 2000 with ‘Wild About Harry’ which starred Brendan Gleeson and last year ‘Alan

Partridge: Alpha Papa’ had a successful release. In a Q & A following the presentation, Declan explained how Hollywood actor Johnny Depp had seen ‘Alpha Papa’ and contacted him to see if he’d direct a film adaptation of JP Donleavy’s The Ginger Man with Depp producing. Although he did state the project may not necessarily get off the ground if sufficient finance cannot be secured. He thanked the society for the honour saying it was nice to get something with only his own name on it, as previous awards and nominations are usually shared with other producers. He also acknowledged the influence his uncle Tony (who was also present) had on his career, since it was his Super 8 camera that sparked his interest in film and filmmaking many years ago. n

The Case for the Prosecution

1 April 2015 from the cops. During these scenes, they were pretty much one of the same.

You DECiDE!

by Jamie Murphy

Among his officers are Giovanni ribisi’s Riddler like tech savvy officer and ryan Gosling plays the film’s Paul Mccartney, you know the “cute one.” He literally turns up, looks good in a suit and just looks cute in general.

Clever marketing, a top list cast and the promise of the absolutely gorgeous emma stone in a figure hugging red dress and being lovely in general sold me on Gangster squad. I haven’t always been cynical and the promise of all these things worked on me!! And I’ve never really been but always wanted to go visit Los Angeles. But through the magic of the moving picture I have been transported there on numerous occasions. My first encounter was Bugsy and so far my favourite visit came with La confidential. That movie is in my humblest opinion as close to a masterpiece about the crime rampant in LA in the halcyon days of the 40’s and the 50’s that you will ever lay your beady little eyes on. So, how was my visit to Los Angeles during Gangster squad? Well to be honest dear reader it was like when you’re a kid and you finally get to visit the zoo and all the animals are either asleep or hiding. That sense of dread runs into your guts and in the end all you get is a long trip which is ultimately disappointing and in some cases soul-crushingly destroying. The story focuses on the gangster Mickey cohen. He was played by Harvey Keitel in Bugsy and when he was at his absolute peak in the 1950’s by Paul Guilfoyle in the sublime La confidential. Keitel played him very well and gave him an underLet's start off with this: Gangster squad was never going to win any awards. But, it's not trying to. A lot of critics criticise its lack of depth and originality, but Gangster squad isn't trying to be deep. It's a fast-paced, entertaining homage to gangster and noir films of old. It is what it is – a battle between good and evil for the soul of Los Angeles, with various shoot-outs and some vigilante cops taking on the mob. It's not trying to make some philosophical point, it's just trying to be an enjoyable, and visually pleasing film. And it succeeds amazingly well. Gangster Squad is full of old gangster and noir movie cliches; cheesy lines, good vs evil and a cop with a dark streak trying to make his city a better place. It's gritty, dark and sleazy, yet there is an element of humour throughout that we've come to expect from director Ruben Fleischer. The story (which is very loosely based on real events): Sergeant John O'Mara (Josh Brolin) is back from the war, only to discover that gangster Mickey Cohen (Sean Penn) has a tightening grip on the

gangsTer squad stated air of menace while still maintaining all the charm of a mob boss at the top of his game. In confidential he is played as a man at the top of his game but aware of the powers that be around him that could end him. In Gangster squad he is played as a complete out and out psychopath by sean Penn. Not much of a stretch one would have to imagine but he is played almost in a panto villain guise. Some of his actions are laughably mental, and as for the actuality and realism of the film, that is stretched with some of these moments. city of L.A. The politicians, judges and police are all in his pocket, relishing in the money and power that Cohen slides their way. After single-handedly attacking and taking down one of Cohen's brothels, O'Mara is called upon by police Chief Bill Parker (played by the excellent Nick Nolte) to create an off-the-books, any-means-necessary squad tasked with waging guerilla warfare against Mickey Cohen. The squad is hand-picked for O'Mara by his heavily pregnant wife, Connie, who is brilliantly played by the wonderful Mireille Enos. A hard-ass just like her husband, she is resolutely shrewd and is totally uncompromising when it comes to the safety of her husband. She selects the knifewielding Coleman Harris (Anthony Mackie), gun-slinger Max Kennard (Robert Patrick) and tech genius Conwell Keeler (Giovanni Ribisi). Kennard's protégé Navidad Ramirez (Michael Peña) sneakily tags along, and the squad is almost complete. Connie's first pick is the last to come around, but after witnessing the murder of a young boy he knows, he is in with a vengeance.

Cohen is being targeted by many, many people. Most notably by a suitably gravelly voiced police chief, nick nolte. He starts up an elite squad to try and bring down Cohen by any means necessary. This squad is placed into the hands of a World War Two hero, sergeant o’Mara (a thankless role handled amicably by Josh Brolin). In a plot line that is pretty much lifted from the far superior, the Untouchables, the squad is set up and they fight to bring down Cohen. They are led by o’Mara who has a wife, kids and a team

identical to elliot ness. One striking difference is apparent though. Whereas ness was clever, resourceful and led a strike force of impeccable skill, o’Mara leads his team like a bull in a china shop. His plan, of which there seems to be only one, is to go in hard to illegal brothels, casinos and gambling joints and shoot blindly showering the people in there with bullets. Those scenes really grated with me, it was just reckless and didn’t really separate the mobsters that were being hunted down

The Case for the Defence by Emma Morris Jerry Wooter, played by the ever great Ryan Gosling is a slick, womanising cop who, up until the murder, couldn't care less about the seedy underbelly of L.A. (also with a weird nasally voice Gosling puts on, but it works for the character). With the squad complete, O'Mara starts a campaign to destroy Cohen's operations, and get the city he loves back from the grip of evil. It's a dark movie, both in tone and lighting, but the humour adds a much needed lightness to an otherwise grim movie. It's very blackand-white in its theme; from the very beginning it is noticeably set out who is good and who is evil. The movie begins as it means to go on: with Mickey Cohen ripping a Chicago gangster in half with

two cars. This sets the tone for what will be an equally bloody two hours. I will say, for those averse to blood and gore, this is maybe not the movie for you. The violence only escalates throughout, with both good and bad doing their fair share of beatings and murder. O'Mara is the good cop who wants to get his city back from the gangsters, and is willing to do anything to achieve that goal. While the line is blurred with regards to their actions, it could not be any clearer who stands on what side of the line. Emma Stone stars in this movie as Cohen's dame, the red-headed beauty Grace Faraday. The scene where we meet her first is definitely my favourite of the movie. Watching Emma Stone walk across

emma stone plays Cohen’s moll and starts an illicit affair with Gosling’s cute and ultimately empty character. Like their relationship he never clicks and as much as I love stone, she is far too nice to convince as a gangster’s moll, let alone a vampish moll. If their affair is supposed to be dangerous then why is there no big blow off once it is revealed? A tremendous turd sandwich served up in a continuously bad movie.

cast! sean Penn is your star, he is playing one of the most iconic gangsters in history. Penn’s performance is disappointing. There are opportunities of possible greatness and even glimpses of it but it just never seems to take off. Josh Brolin plays o’Mara like a complete idiot. I mean I get that he needs to be a tough man but sometimes he borders on just being dense, pure stupid. Gosling is saddled with a wet drip of a character that he gets away with purely because he is easy on the eye and emma stone fails to convince as a gangster’s moll. Every time she came on screen I found myself writing down, “There’s emma stone….In a nice dress…” “there’s emma stone…. she’s going out with sean Penn in this but she really likes Gosling.” Tragic waste. Bottom line, it is not a good movie. It never finds its feet and the film veers between semi truthful biopic and a chapter from Gta: Los angeles 1940. I make that statement in a kind of defence of the film. The proposed ending was supposed to be a massive shoot-out in a movie theatre in which the movie goers there at the time were gunned down by thugs. Which would have been a nice point on the pointlessness and collateral damage of gang wars.

The film has the potential to be great and there are many reasons it should be. The cast, look at the

However before the release of the movie a real life event not a million miles removed took place in a theatre in Colorado. The ending was changed and I genuinely feel they should have pushed ahead with it. It would have given a two-star film the possibility of another half star. But they did not. I understand why and am not condoning violence but, in the setting, the film would have benefited g r e a t l y. G o w a t c h L a confidential instead. n

your screen in a slinky red dress, with a slit up to her hip, is definitely a high point for the film. The 1940s style really suits her, and she pulls it off with a level of class than a lesser woman could not hope to aspire to. Grace and Jerry become involved, and Gosling and Stone's chemistry is just as on point as we've come to expect from the two on-screen.

and unnecessary bravado on all parts it's really pushing the tough guy of the 1940s stereotype into the very essence of the film. Sean Penn as Mickey Cohen is great he plays the tough and mean hearted gangster with an overt relish, and Brolin is very convincing as the straight-laced cop, who is willing to do anything to take the bad guy down.

Visually the movie brings in some Sin City elements. It has some comic like visuals, and keeps its shots dark and ominous to set the tone. It is not a subtle film – everything is in your face and very flashy. From the amazing costumes to the very epic car chase scene (car chases should always have grenades) it hits all the right points for a gangster action movie. The soundtrack is amazing, and the use of some jaunty jazz music overlaid onto some very violent scenes adds a sense of humour to the proceedings.

Gangster Squad is what it is: flashy, visual and entertaining. It's a very fast paced movie – it introduces its characters quickly, and speeds through plot points to keep the audience entertained. It has some epic slow-motion shoot-outs (which are amazing, who doesn't want to see a Christmas bauble slowly shattering to pieces) and while there isn't a whole lot of character development, the actors play to their strengths, and make this a movie really worth watching. It's a totally over-the-top movie, both visually and in cheesy ‘40s lines, and maybe it's the cheese that makes me love it so. It's a thoroughly enjoyable movie, and if you like cheesy, gangster, actionpacked movies, then I highly recommend this one. n

Gangster Squad gives the overt message of 'this is men, being real men'. With hand-to-hand boxing to prove who's the better man,

The gig took place in Mooney’s on the Quay, Wexford, with doors opened at 8pm. Live music started at 9.30pm. Over the past two months the twelve music students along with their tutor, Anita Cullen, have worked exceptionally hard to produce an event to raise muchneeded funds for the Jack and Jill Foundation, performing a variety of music from the ‘50s right up to present day. Small clips of rehearsals are on their Facebook page available for public viewing. DJ Jesse Kells performed his own mixes after the gig. The night in full was a roaring success, raising almost €1,000 for the charity. All musicians performed to their maximum potential, completely surpassing any expectations that the crowd, the students, and organisers had. It is safe to say that not one person went home who hadn’t enjoyed the performance. And there were a lot of enthusiastic dancers and singers in the crowd who were not afraid to join in! A monster raffle was held on the night with prizes donated from many businesses in Co. Wexford including Sam McCauley Chemist, Hynes Jewellers, Nicola

‘Sow and Grow’ The Innocent & GIY (Grow It Yourself) national Sow & Grow campaign for primary schools is back and chef Lilly Higgins was on hand to launch the campaign last month with the help of Minister for Education and Skills Jan O’Sullivan. This year, the Sow & Grow campaign aims to get over 20,000 children growing this spring through a fun, free, learning experience that will show them just how easy it is to grow their own greens and enjoy the taste of their own food. To date, Innocent Drinks and GIY have facilitated more than 60,000 school children to grow their own. Chef Lilly Higgins demonstrated at the launch how the courgette, pumpkin and cress seeds that are found in the growing packs can be made into tasty meals. Teachers and youth-group leaders alike can apply for one of 650 free sow & grow packs on innocentdrinks.ie/sowandgrow

for the classroom. Each pack includes 30 growing pots, seeds, soil, lesson plans and growing guides and is sure to keep a group of young growers busy while educating them on the benefits of planting seeds and the beauty of turning them into a delicious, edible plant. Once the 650 packs are gone a smaller growing pack will then be made available. The registered schools can then write about or upload photos with their growing progress and for every school that does, they will receive a sow & grow certificate as well the chance to win a class trip to Bloom Festival 2015 and Dublin Zoo, €500 of gardening equipment and one year growing support from GIY. Vi s i t w w w. i n n o c e n t drinks.ie/sowandgrow to register for an Innocent & GIY ‘sow & grow’ pack that will keep children informed and amused on all things healthy and natural. #sowandgrow @innocentireland @giyireland n

baked goats cheese salad You will need:  One inch rounds of goat cheese, sliced and rind removed.  A red pepper, a yellow pepper.  A bunch of freshly snipped chives.  One cup of white breadcrumbs.  Half a teaspoon of salt and white pepper.  One egg, beaten.  One cup of flour, sifted and lightly seasoned.  Two tablespoons of oil.  A bag of fresh salad leaves, rocket etc.  Two tablespoons of olive oil.  One teaspoon of wholegrain mustard.  Juice of half a lemon. Method: Preheat oven to 200. Prepare the peppers by dic-

ing them, drizzle with olive oil and season with salt and pepper. In a roasting tin spread the peppers out evenly. Bake in the oven for 15 minutes. Three separate bowls: in first bowl sift flour and season slightly with salt and pepper; in second bowl beat an egg for the egg wash; in third bowl chop fresh

chives and combine them with the white breadcrumbs. Simply slice the goats cheese into one inch rounds and remove the rind. Coat in the flour, egg wash and breadcrumbs. Allow to firm up in the fridge for 10 to 20 minutes. In a saucepan heat two tablespoons of oil and fry the breaded goats cheese until golden on each side, this should take about 2 to 3 minutes. Allow to bake in the oven at 180 for 5 minutes. Simply dress the rocket and roasted peppers with a simple dressing of two tablespoons of olive oil, juice of half a lemon and a teaspoon of wholegrain mustard and top with the warm baked goats cheese. Students and staff of the Bunclody Adult Learning Centre, with AEO of WWETB Mary Walsh, at the recent launch of the students’ book, Recipes for Life.

Launch of Recipes for Life book at the Bunclody Adult Learning Centre, March 2015… This book started out as an idea for a collection of recipes that were typical of each of the nations represented among the students of Bunclody Adult Learning Centre. The orignal idea was to provide a group project for a QQI Level 4 Teamworking module that would also allow all students to contribute in a unique way. It quickly grew beyond this simple purpose. The initial, enthusiastic discussions

brought forward many wonderful ideas which quickly gave the project additional cultural themes. This development was appropriate given the multicultural character of the students. The project developed as a selection of personal writings describing the experience of other European citizens working and studying in Ireland. Each of the contributors has written easy-to-follow recipes that all of us can explore and enjoy. But more importantly they have demonstrated their success in learning the

english language in VTOS. Their writings communicate the riches of their cultures and their impressions of Irish culture. Through their writings we can learn from their culture as they are learning from ours. The Bunclody Adult Learning Centre looks forward to the greater contribution they will make as they continue their studies in further education. All proceeds from the sale of the book will be donated to the Hope Cancer Support Centre. Books on sale at the Bunclody Adult Education Centre, Ryland Rd, Bunclody. n

Great news for the South East: vLM Airlines is to fly Waterford-London Luton and Waterford-Birmingham. Flights on the WaterfordLondon Luton route are set to resume at the end of this month, with Belgian-based VLM Airlines to fly 12 times a week in each direction. Bookings can be made immediately through www.flyvlm.com with twice-daily Monday-Friday flights, as well as a Saturday and a Sunday service. Operations will begin on Monday, April 27, using a Fokker 50 aircraft with capacity for up to 50 passengers. VLM will also operate a four times a week service from Waterford to Birmingham. VLM Airlines has flown in Europe since 1993 with its first service on the AntwerpLondon City route. Previously named Regional Airline of the Year, VLM Airlines currently operates a range of passenger services at Antwerp, Rotterdam

and Liege to Avignon, Bologna, Geneva, Hamburg, Nice and Venice. The airline’s CEO, Arthur White, said that VLM very much looks forward to taking on the Waterford routes. “We’re very confident that there is a sustainable demand for reliable and convenient direct air services between the southeast of Ireland and London and Birmingham. Various Waterford-London services have operated since 1985, and we are excited to now be in a position to operate it as well as the WaterfordBirmingham route. “Direct air services into the UK are obviously very important to Waterford and the southeast region from a social and economic perspective. We will be working hard to promote the route for outbound and inbound passengers to Waterford and believe passengers will respond positively.”

Desmond O’Flynn, CEO, Waterford Airport said: “We are delighted to have VLM Airlines coming on board to operate the Waterford-London Luton route, and that they will also continue the very successful Birmingham service. “With a great track record of operating charter flights and providing air services to other airlines, VLM is now growing its own scheduled route network. We are particularly pleased that Waterford-London Luton and Waterford–Birmingham are included in this development. The load factors on our UK services have always been healthy and there’s every reason for optimism that VLM’s Waterford-London Luton service will be a great success for the airline and for the airport. We have always enjoyed tremendous support from business and leisure passengers in our catchment area and we look forward to that

continuing when the new London service commences in late April.” “Air connectivity is hugely important to Waterford and the surrounding southeast region. This has been underlined time and again by inward investment and economic development agencies. Similarly, both services will be a key driver for incoming tourists from the UK, especially at a time when the Eurozone is particularly attractive to UK travellers. “For those from the southeast taking a city break, the great world city of London is once again readily accessible. The arrival of VLM Airlines is very significant to Waterford Airport but also to the wider community that we serve.” Bookings on the Waterford-London Luton and Waterford-Birmingham services can be made through www.flyvlm.com. n

It is the 4th year running they have won ‘’Best Plant Merchandising.’’ Speaking on behalf of Cois na hAbhann, Elaine Walsh said, “We are overjoyed to have received these prestigious awards. A huge amount of work goes into maintaining a high standard of merchandising and displays as well as plant quality so it is amazing to have once again been recognised at such an esteemed event.” According to Maria Nolan, “At Cois na hAbhann we are constantly striving to make our business better and are always seeking new and innovative ways to promote local

Local fine Gael Minister Paul Kehoe TD has welcomed a funding package of €9,840,140 million for the LEADER element of the Rural Development Programme recently announced by the government. “The economic recovery is underway and the Government is determined that the recovery is felt in every corner of Ireland. Investment in the LEADER programme is of huge significance to County Wexford. “The LEADER programme is all about community led projects; it is focused on making the recovery local. Once approval for the programme has been given by

businesses and jobs as well as keeping our customers happy. As such these awards reflect the passion we share with our customers for the garden so we are extremely happy with both the awards and the judge’s comments.” The Quality Awards recognise and promote excellence across three key sectors of the industry – Garden Centres, N u r s e r y G ro w e r s a n d Landscape Contractors. Entrants have to make significant investments in training, infrastructure and procedures to attain a

Quality Award and consumers can benefit greatly from identifying them before they plan a trip to the local garden centre or engage a landscape contractor. Cois na hAbhann is a family-run business that opened its doors in 2007 and opened an in-house coffee shop in 2010. the European Commission, L o c a l A c t i o n G ro u p s o f Wexford will be invited to submit ideas for how funding should be spent. These groups will be set up in accordance with the EU Regulations and will consist of representatives across public and private socioeconomic interests. “I know in Wexford there are any number of projects where funding is needed and will be of huge benefit. “We are committed to empowering rural Ireland, to giving the local people of Wexford the opportunity to identify where the LEADER programme funding should go and in controlling the allocation at a local level.

“Due to the new Local Government Reform Act 2014, this money will be controlled at a local level and therefore the allocation of resources will be much more targeted, cost effective and efficient. Streamlining operations at a local level should maximise the funding available to support important projects and the local communities in Wexford. “Employment is growing in every region in Ireland. We plan to continue the progress by enabling businesses to create 40,000 jobs this year and aim to restore full employment by 2018. This LEADER funding is a further commitment to our goal of securing the recovery in all areas of Ireland.” n

The Memory Train is coming! Pet APPRoved

VET DIARY FOR APRIL with the Moyne Veterinary Clinic

This month, Joe Kavanagh, recalls a difficult decision. The death of a pet for some people may seem a little insignificant but to others it is a very traumatic and arduous time. Recently I had to 'put to sleep', as we say, a dog I'd been treating over a long number of years. He was gradually slowing down, was carrying a good few pounds extra and just seemed to potter about in his own time. But on another level he was 'King of the house'. All the family adored him and it was almost as if everything revolved around him rather than the other way round! He had a really gentle demeanor but was as tough as old boots behind it all. He had a tumour which we had been treating 'conservatively' for a few years and it responded well but alas it kept coming back so finally we decided to operate. He was carrying a bit extra as I've said, had a heart murmur and wasn't a good anaesthetic candidate but we'd tried all other options and decided this was all that was left to us. The operation was scheduled for the same day, coincidentally, that his master had to go for surgery too. Despite all the risks he came through the surgery and the anaesthetic (the dog I mean!) and made a good recovery. Everyone was delighted. Over the following weeks the wound healed well, he had his stitches taken out and all was good.

As summer rolls around once again, so does the brand new Rathnure Summer Musical, "The Memory Train". Following hot on the heels of another sell-out pantomime a t C h r i s t m a s , R a t h n u re Pantomime Society is currently deep in rehearsals for another smash hit show and what will be their 6th original Summer Musical. Written and produced by John Reilly, The Memory Train tells the story of a young girl who, as she is celebrating her 16th birthday, is struck by tragedy when her mother dies tragically in an alleged mugging. As her father is put in prison for the attack, she feels there is something very wrong. However, fate throws her a lifeline as a mystery train driver and his steam engine, offers her the chance to go back in time to the 1960's, to see if she can solve the mystery of who, from her mother's childhood, would have motive to kill her. Filled with drama, laughter, sadness and loads of great music and dance, Rathnure is ready to give you the smash

hit of the summer. Keep an eye on their Facebook page and in

the local press for Box Office Openings. n

A few weeks passed and I got a phone call – would I check him. So we examined him and I realised that the heart was slowly losing its power to pump, fluid was gathering and we gave him meds to help alleviate each of these. He responded for a while but never really got going and so eventually after much deliberation and soul searching the family decided it was time to say goodbye. For me it's an infinitely more difficult thing to make that decision but sometimes it feels like it's the kindest thing to do. We gave him an injection, which is an overdose of anaesthetic, and he just went into a deeper and deeper sleep. I often think it's the one thing we have over the medical profession – that we can make that call to end the suffering but it's never an easy decision to make. May his spirit fly and may he sleep in peace. n

View from the Hill waTer Charges Around now water charge bills will start dropping through the letterboxes of all and sundry. No doubt most people who are liable to pay these charges will do so reluctantly. A few may pay them willingly but I think these will be far and few between. A sizeable minority will not pay either as a protest against the charge or simply because they cannot afford to hand out another wad of notes to some authority or other. The government seems to be contemplating introducing special legislation to enable a fast-track system of pursuit of those who, for whatever reason,

fail to pay. This is an extraordinary step for any government to take. To enhance a utility company with special powers to enable the collection of cash from hard-pressed people is totally wrong. The normal options open to any other business to collect monies owed should be sufficient. In political terms the continued direct involvement of Government Ministers in this debacle is doing nothing for the popularity of the present government. They should stand back and let the company get on with its business without any further perceived strong-arm tactics from Leinster House.

FarMers on The roads From now to late Autumn is a very busy time for our farmers. This will involve the moving of very large agricultural vehicles along our roads as they travel to different parts of their land to carry out very necessary tasks. Totally essential of course and indeed welcome in the context that our agriculture industry is still, and will remain, our most important single contributor to the economy. All of us, whether urban or rural, need a vibrant farm sector to keep us all afloat. Therefore those of us who drive on rural roads in particular need to be aware of the dangers at this time of year and exercise due caution. The agricultural community has a responsibility in this regard and should pull in where possible when driving slow-moving vehicles to allow faster traffic to pass out. Very few of them do this thus causing frustration to those behind and creating a scramble to get out at the first opportunity. This leads to great danger for all other road users in the vicinity and can cause very serious accidents. A little bit of consideration could avoid this and make our roads much safer than they are.

aLCohoL sPorTs sPonsorshiP This, by now, regular condemnation of the sponsorship of certain sports by drinks companies is a little bit silly. If the sponsorship ends where is the money to come from? I don’t for one minute believe that because a certain alcohol product’s name is associated with a particular sport that everyone involved in that sport as a participant or observer will suddenly go mad drinking that particular product. Sadly, a certain percentage of people will abuse alcohol whether drinks companies sponsor sports events or not. The bottom line is that if all such sponsorship is removed somebody else will have to take up the slack. That somebody else will probably be the government who of course will get the money in increased taxes from you and me. And please don’t suggest that other companies will step in. They won’t because believe you me if any commercial alternative existed it would have been well tapped by now. So let’s get real here and stop looking a gift horse in the mouth.

Paddy Likes To know “Paddy like to know what’s going on.” These words were famously spoken by our now Taoiseach on the night of the election in 2011. He promised transparency in his future government’s dealing with the public and gave us all hope that things were going to change. Things have dramatically changed in recent times with the same Taoiseach point blank refusing to answer a simple question in relation to the Callinan affair. This matter is being investigated by Justice Fennelly who in the course of his work called those who had information into what happened at the time of Commissioner Callinan’s retirement or resignation or sacking before him. We are told that three of those witnesses were recalled to clarify their testimony. The question being put to “Paddy Likes to Know” Taoiseach is simply, “ Were you, Taoiseach, one of those recalled by Justice Fennelly”? He has consistently refused to answer. Beats me as to why he can’t just say yes or no. If he had answered the question initially the issue would have gone away by now. As it is it will go on and on and when “Paddy” finds out the

truth it will do Enda no favours. It’s regrettable that many of the good things this government has achieved are going unreported because of the amount of media time and space this issue is taking up. It is also grossly unfair to Fine Gael TDs like Paul Kehoe who as Chief Whip has to tow and enforce the party line on matters such as this. They find themselves in the impossible position of seeing their popularity suffer over an issue on which they might have a different personal view to that of the Taoiseach. So in fairness to all, Enda should fess up and tell “Paddy” as to whether or not he did speak to Justice Fennelly more than once. Simple really. The Missus and i The Missus needed our marriage certificate the other day. After rummaging around for a while she eventually found it. She was staring at it for quite some time and I foolishly asked her if everything was ok with it. “Not really“, she says, “There’s no expiry date on it.” n We are often asked: Who is the “View from the Hill” columnist? All we can say is that the author’s surname is NOT Doyle!

Caroline gets motoring opel adaM roCks review by Caroline Kidd

it’s very fashionable these days to drive around in a car with a different coloured roof to the rest of the car. Mini has been at it for years now and lots of other carmakers have caught up with the idea and added a bicolour option to some of their smartest models. So the Opel Adam Rocks scores highly on looks. I didn’t meet one person while I had the car that didn’t fall for the charms of Adam Rocks. Now you might be thinking “Adam Rocks” is a strange name for a car. Well, if I told you the other family members of Opel’s Adam city car range are called Jam, Glam and Slam, it might make a bit more sense. Opel is really showing its lighter side with the Adam, and that means throwing convention out the window. Adam Rocks sits at the top of the Adam city car range with pricing starting around €19,000. To differentiate it from the other models in the Adam range, Opel has toughened up the look by adding grey plastic cladding to the front, rear and around the wheel arches, raised the ride height by 15mm and given the car a slightly wider and more aggressive stance. An electrically operated canvas roof is also standard. However, the changes run deeper than that and the

every month Bunclody native Caroline kidd brings you the best from the world of motoring, including car reviews, news and more. Motorists vs Cyclists by Caroline Kidd

Adam Rocks is all the better for them. To accommodate the higher ride height, Opel has retuned parts of the chassis, suspension and steering. As a result, I found that the Adam Rocks was more comfortable than its siblings. A bit of added weight to the steering makes the Adam Rocks feel less nervous at speed. It’s a great car to drive, very tidy through the bends with lots of grip. For a car of such small stature, it felt very stable out on the open road too. The car I drove had Opel’s new 1.0 litre turbocharged petrol engine. It’s an absolute gem combining great performance with excellent refine-

ment. On paper it will return 55 mpg. I managed 47 mpg over about 500kms of driving on a mixture of roads. There is also a 1.4 litre petrol engine with 100bhp available, but if your budget can stretch at all, I would highly recommend the turbo unit. Inside Adam Rocks, the interior feels very premium with an interesting combination of bits of body coloured dash and textured plastics, while air conditioning as standard will keep everyone cool. Space wise this is not a huge car. While there is adequate space for the driver and front passenger, the boot is small (but deep). You will fit two adults in the back, but the

space is tight. However, style and image tend to be the reason people buy cars like Adam Rocks – not practicality. If you’re looking for a small car with character and willing to pay a small price premium for that, I think you will really enjoy the Opel Adam Rocks. Model Tested: Opel Adam Rocks 1.0 litre Turbo Price: €20,995 engine: 1.0 litre three cylinder turbocharged petrol Power: 115bhp 0-100km/h: 9.9 seconds economy: 55.4mpg (5.1l/100km) Co2 emissions: 119g/km Motor Tax: €200 per year n

it’s tough being a cyclist. you’re one of the most vulnerable road users and you have to share space with vehicles weighing over a tonne, whose driver may not know best practice when overtaking you. Then spare a thought for the motorist too. A meandering cyclist on a dark, damp evening with little or no illumination may add stress to an already tedious commute. While that’s not representative of all cyclists, the outliers do nothing for relations between motorists and cyclists. I think it’s fair to say there is a bit of mutual mistrust between both camps. A recent survey by motoring solutions specialist Easytrip tried to get to the nub of the matter to find out the ‘offences’ each camp thinks the other is guilty of. It makes for interesting reading. The survey revealed that neither motorists nor cyclists believe the other pays enough attention to them on the road. While 56% of cyclists say that drivers don’t pay enough attention to them, 69% of motorists make the same claim about cyclists, with almost a third of drivers describing cyclists as a

“menace” on the road. However more than 40% of drivers say that they do understand the challenges faced by cyclists. ‘oFFenCes’ By MoTorisTs When cyclists were asked about witnessing ‘offences’ committed by motorists, the following mishaps were referenced as the top three: • Motorists not using indicators • Drivers failing to leave enough space between their car and the kerb for the cyclist • Motorists cutting off a cyclist when taking a left hand turn. ‘oFFenCes’ By CyCLisTs A staggering 95% of drivers claimed they had witnessed a cyclist acting illegally or dangerously on the road. The top three incidents were highlighted as: • A cyclist breaking a red light • Cycling on the footpath • A cyclist failing to wear high visibility clothing in dark weather conditions. Whether you are a cyclist, a motorist or dabble as a bit of both, there are no excuses now not to tidy up your act! n

Enniscorthy is remembered as the only town outside of Dublin to rise in Easter 1916. For four days the town was controlled by local Irish Volunteers and Cumman na mBan members, while the tricolor flew over the Athenaeum. Meanwhile, a second column of Volunteers began proceeding northwards to relieve

their beleaguered comrades in Dublin, liberating the villages of Ferns and Camolin in the process. Enniscorthy also holds the accolade of being the last location in Ireland to surrender in Easter 1916, only doing so after receiving direct orders from proclamation signatory Padraig Pearse. The annual Easter Monday commemoration ceremonies have been held in Enniscorthy for almost the last 50 years and will take place again on 6th April 2015 in Market Square and will pave the way for the next year ’s Easter 2016 Centenary celebrations. It is proposed that 2016 Centenary celebrations in County Wexford will be marked by a spectacular 10 day programme of events consisting of a series of cultural, historical and traditional activities which are sure to capture the imagination of the public. The Centenary activities will culminate on Easter weekend 2016, with major events to take place in Enniscorthy including concerts, traditional markets, parades, flyovers by the Irish Air Corps, and Battle re-enactments. Among the legacy projects proposed is the production of a limited edition commemorative stamp, a school information pack for primary and secondary level students on the importance of the Easter 1916 in their local area, a 1916 commemorative conference and a Peace Park. There is also great enthusiasm to see the realisation of the Athenaeum refurbishment project. Not only was it from this historic building that Padraig Pearse orated in March 1916 but the Athenaeum also became the headquarters of the Irish Volunteers during the four days of the Enniscorthy Rising.

FASHION eVeNT We are holding our Cystic Fibrosis Ireland, Co. Wexford Branch, event this year at the Riverside Park Hotel, Enniscorthy, on Tuesday 21st of April. It’s fashion with a difference as 4 boutiques in Enniscorthy take on each other in a competition where each shop will pick a customer to get a makeover plus a fashion show on the night.

Yes the rising of 1916 was a military failure but it did sow the seeds for the Irish Republic. Outside of Dublin Enniscorthy was the only town to rise up and was the last to surrender. The Athenaeum was the headquarters of the Irish Volunteers under the command of Seamus Doyle and Seán Etchingham. The rebels flew the tricolour for five days and nights in Enniscorthy until the order came from Pearse, who had been u n a w a re o f t h e r i s i n g i n Enniscorthy, to surrender. Etchingham asked Pearse why the Volunteers had surrendered in Dublin and Pearse told him because they were shooting women and children in the streets. The General Post Office (the GPO) was the main focal point of the rising in Dublin but also the garrison at Boland’s Mills which was taken over by the third battalion of the Dublin brigade of the IRA under the command of Eamon DeValera. My great grandfather Patrick MacGrath was B Company commander of the Dublin brigade at Boland’s Mills in 1916. I have looked for the records of Boland’s Mills in 1916 on the internet but unfortunately the records were destroyed in a fire in 1963 where three veterans who fought in the garrison in 1916 were lost in the fire while tackling the blaze. – Joseph Doyle

Frank Whelan celebrated his milestone 80th birthday recently with a party with family and friends in Joe Doyle’s pub to mark the occasion. Sheriff, as he is known to his buddies in Doyle’s, worked in the old co-op for many years and at the weekends he donned his teddy boy coat and went jiving. I hear Sheriff is still the best jiver in town. Like the old song – the oldest swinger in town – Sheriff is now the oldest jiver in town, but don't take him on in a jiving contest because you'll come out second best! – Joseph Doyle

A Poem For Enniscorthy on 5th March an evening of poetry and discussion of the ten shortlisted poems in a Poem for ireland Project took place in enniscorthy Library. Local poets were invited to read one of the poems and speak in its favour. The setting was intimate, the poetry beautiful and the discussion lively with MC denis Collins encouraging the local audience to voice their likes and dislikes and come up with a poem for enniscorthy if you like! The evening’s proceedings were filmed for the RTE

Arts Programme The Works and each of the poets breathed life into the readings and were bountiful in their praise for their chosen piece. I particularly enjoyed the emotive Quarantine by Eavan Boland delivered eloquently by FOCAL author and poet Caroline Busher – however at the end of the vigorous debate a vote was taken and When all the others were away at Mass by Seamus Heaney emerged as overall winner and in joint second place were The Statue of the Virgin at Granard

Speaks by Paula Meehan and Filleadh ar an gCathair by Ailbhe Ní Ghearbhuigh. The object of the Poem For Ireland Project was to ignite a national conversation about our poetry and to celebrate one of the things we do best and that certainly worked at Enniscorthy Library. Perhaps, Denis Collins has something… perhaps we should choose a Poem For Enniscorthy from amongst our local poets – a project for the FOCAL Committee… me thinks! – Maria Nolan

Smock Alley Medley on saturday 14th March members of FoCaL wexford Literary Festival headed to dublin to the smock alley Theatre to support two of our own local authors, Carmel harrington and Paul o’Brien, participating in a unique fundraiser for Barnardos. I had never been to the Smock Alley Theatre which is an easily accessible venue on Dublin`s Exchequer Street and I was completely blown away by the hugely emotive and powerful performances by actors and authors alike in aid

of that wonderful charity working with and supporting vulnerable children. The production called Under My Bed inspired many well known writers and personalities including John Lonergan, Barbara Scully, Gemma Doorly, Felix Jones, Sharon Mannion, Martin Maguire, Brendan Burke, Seamus Quinn, Paul O`Brien and Carmel Harrington to name but a few, to come up with remarkably moving and very personal pieces from their childhood when everything

lurked beneath the bed and all kinds of ghosts and ghouls and boogie men were waiting to bounce on unsuspecting children in the darknesses and silences of those long nights of long ago when our only protectors were our mammies and daddies. Others less fortunate found terror and fear, self loathing, loss and bereavement lurking under their beds when their should-be protectors became their tormentors turning their childhood into horror stories.

It was a most engaging, varied and entertaining medley of love, laughter, joy, amusement, horror, torment, heartache and anguish with each scene lasting approximately 10/12 minutes. This was a packed showcase of intense, unbelievable performances and moments that had the power to make you laugh and cry but above all else feel the kaleidescope of emotions that each story evoked. Wonderful theatre and a truly worthwhile cause. – Maria Nolan

AGM of EDG enniscorthy drama group held its annual general Meeting at The Presentation Centre on Tuesday 3rd March with the following officers elected for the 2015 season: Liam doyle – Chairman, Marguerite Casey – Vice Chair, Fiona Byrne – secretary, Margaret Casey – Treasurer and Maria nolan – Pro. Many tributes were paid to outgoing Chairman Colm Coomey for all his endeavours to bring drama back to the

town of Enniscorthy. In his address Liam Doyle said that Colm was both the inspiration and driving force behind the re-establishment of the Enniscorthy Drama Group and would be a huge loss both as Chairman and as an actor/director. Great credit is due to him, Liam said, and a lot will have to be done to follow in his footsteps. Liam thanked all the Officers and the Committee and others who assisted with

the various fundraisers and productions over the past 12 months saying that our two Summer plays – Tom, Dick & Harry and Glengarry, Glen Ross, proved to be extremely popular with full houses each night for both and definitely a trend that we intend to continue with for 2015. Liam was lavish in his praise for all the actors who put in Trojan work and gave excellent performances particularly our two newcomers Fintan Kelly and

Podge Dwyer. He complimented them on their tremendous run on the One Act Circuit with Pvt. Wars saying that we are not too far off becoming a recognised and established competitor on the circuit. The general consensus of the AGM was that going forward all is positive for the 2015 season with two summer plays, a return to Pub Theatre and a Christmas play envisaged. – Maria Nolan, PRO

Wexford GAA to the fore on player welfare wexford gaa has taken the initiative on Player welfare by appointing County and shelmaliers dual player Brian Malone as Player welfare officer for the county. County Secretary Margaret Doyle said that Wexford GAA would not be found wanting in terms of player well-being, a huge issue for players, parents and managers alike, and were happy to adopt this new Croke Park initiative on a pilot basis. Wexford GAA is fortunate, she said, to have someone of the calibre of Brian Malone – hurler, footballer, club player, county player and teacher to take on the job. ‘Brian knows what he’s talking about having seen the problems and the pitfalls from all angles’, Margaret told the large crowd gathered at Riverside Park Hotel, Enniscorthy, on Wednesday 18th February for the launch of the new initiative. Some players are designed for sports – they have the talent, the mechanics and the luck not to get injured. Others get injured regularly, or simply do not have the required mechanics that allow their

bodies to withstand the forces applied in playing Gaelic football or hurling. The challenge according to the new Player Welfare Officer is ‘to ensure that all players are prepared to the best of their abilities and that they engage in our games where the risks have been considered and controlled as far as possible.’ Brian went on to say that our young sportsmen and women need to take power into their own hands and be responsible for the food they eat, the training they do and t h e i r re c o v e r y p e r i o d s . ‘Burnout is a myth’, he said, ‘over-training is the correct term that should be used when players become fatigued and fed up of the sport and part of his remit will be to look at ways to overcome over-training. Players he went on to say need to know the difference between being over-trained and being fit. He told the young players present that they would be given a new phone App – Smartabase – where U-16 to U-21 players can type in how they feel each day after training and if there are issues that they are reluc-

tant to speak to their managers about they can phone Brian and he will discuss it with them. Decision making can be a major problem for many young players as demands are made on them from all quarters – Schools / Colleges/ Club and County in relation to both training sessions and games and again Brian encouraged young players to contact him if they are confused and in need of guidance. ‘After all’, he said , ‘Gaelic games are

about enjoyment – there is no payment for playing them so if the enjoyment stops then there is no other good reason to continue playing and it’s time to take stock and think about it.’ Nutritionist Julie Conran was on hand to give some expert advice on proper diet and food supplements and the benefits of hydration followed by a short presentation on the GAA’s Code of Behaviour by Child Welfare Officer Dermot Howlin.

After a lively question and answer session Margaret Doyle thanked Brian, Julie and Dermot for their excellent lectures saying that this was the first of many events and evenings that would be rolled out over the coming year as Wexford GAA does its utmost to protect, respect and care for its players while promoting, developing and nurturing its games. new facilities opening soon in enniscorthy The official opening date for the enniscorthy sports hub (running track) is now likely to be Saturday 16th May. Staffing is currently underway to enable the facility be open around 70 hours per week. This means that in addition to the organised groups which use the facility at present, individuals will soon be able to drop in and make use of the international standard track for a charge likely to be in the region of €2 per hour. The new, public car park at 'Murphy's yard' on Mill Ya r d L a n e ( o p p o s i t e Enniscorthy Health Centre) will be opening soon, possibly within a matter of days. It will be €2 for a full day's parking. Hopefully, those remaining shop owners and their staff who park outside their own premises (thereby depriving themselves and their neighbouring businesses of potential customers) will take the opportunity to use this great new facility so close to the town centre.

Walk with us out of darkness into light

on Tuesday 10th March members of the enniscorthy darkness into Light organising Committee travelled to the irish Film institute venue at eustace street, dublin, for the national Launch of the 2015 diL Pieta house walk on saturday 9th May. Actor Moe Dunford of the popular and sometimes brutal series The Vikings and his latest venture the film Patrick’s Day was on hand to launch the event ably assisted by the founder and former CEO of Pieta House, Joan Freeman, who has recently stepped out of her CEO role to make room

Shamrocks Secretary Aoife O’Connor, John Hendrick and Rapparees/Starlights Maria Nolan with Pieta House CEO Brian Higgins.

for newcomer Brian Higgins and to head off into the global sphere bringing Pieta House to the Irish abroad. Joan explained that her decision to step down came following a visit to New York to organise this year ’s DIL event. Joan and a friend were relaxing over a drink after a long day of meetings when the young Irish bartender recognising their accents began talking to them. When he discovered who they were and what they were about he began to open up and tell his story. He and his brother had come to New York together to get away

from Recession and make their fortune and whilst things had worked out well for him the opposite happened for his brother who ended up unemployed and spending long periods alone in the big and oft times unfriendly city. Things got so bad for him that their parents came over from Ireland to bring him home and since then he has been attending Pieta House in Limerick and life is improving for him. Joan immediately committed to doing something for the Irish Diaspora and plans are afoot for Pieta House to launch a pilot service in New York

this summer which will be based in the Irish Immigrant Centre in Queens. ‘Our mission remains the same in Ireland’, Joan said, ‘but we are committed to offering the service to people who might need it further afield. The service is just a starting point to see what demand is there but we will also begin to roll out the ‘Mind Your Buddy’ campaign within the GAA in New York.’ Darkness Into Light has already gone global with over 80 venues planned for 2015 many of them outside Ireland such as London, New York, Sydney, Melbourne, Perth even

as far away as Shanghai! ‘We have come a long way in a very short time’, Joan said, ‘from our first ever DIL in 2009 at a single location this year we have over 80 locations all around Ireland and the world.’ This she attributed to the marvellous workers at Pieta House and to the wonderful volunteers in all the venues around the country and of course to the generous and steadfast sponsorship of Electic Ireland who were represented at the Launch by CEO Jim Dollard. The new CEO wrapped up proceedings saying, ‘This year’s

Darkness Into Light event will see an estimated 100,000 people all over the world supporting others on their journey from darkness into light. The job of Pieta House is to be there for these people in a time of crisis and we can do that thanks to the support of people in Ireland and abroad.’ In Enniscorthy the Rapparees/Starlights and Shamrocks GAA Clubs will come together to co-ordinate and promote the event at 4.15am on Saturday 9th May.
