comment Plans are now at an advanced stage for all of Enniscorthy’s summer festivals. First up is the colourful Enniscorthy Street Rhythms Dance Fest which takes place on 6th and 7th June and is followed later that month by the rejuvinated Strawbery Fest which is now becoming much more of a family event and takes place on 24-28th June under the new name of ‘Strawberry, Culture & Food Fest’. The hugely successful Riverside Jump rock ‘n’ roll festival will now take place along with the Battle of Vinegar Hill Re-enactment Festival on the August bank holiday weekend, and the 21st edition of the legendary Blackstairs Blues Festival will take place on 11-13th September. See page 13 for more information on Enniscorthy’s upcoming festivals. As well as providing lots of free entertainment for the residents of the town, these festivals are also a great source of tourist revenue and tourism will increasingly be the lifeblood of this town and the major driver of future economic growth. The Slaney News hopes to see all our readers on the streets of Enniscorthy supporting these festivals over the summer. – Frank Corcoran

Centenary of the 1916 Rising Much has already been written about the centenary; even the apologists for empire, an empire that instigated episodes of terror upon us, have launched tirades of disparagement at a determining event in our history. Calls to honour and remember those who cracked down so brutally and callously on the 1916 Rising are offensive and degrading to the memory of all who gave their lives in 1916 for Irish freedom and democracy. British soldiers who lost their lives imposing colonial/imperial might in many countries throughout the world are not commemorated by the countries they subjugated. In Ireland, inexplicably, there are calls to pay tribute to our former colonisers. A former Tory M.P., and commanding officer of the Sherwood Foresters infantry regiment, said it would be the ‘ultimate reconciliation’ if our Taoiseach was to visit the graves of British soldiers killed in the 1916 Rising. The Minister for Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht said consideration should be given to erecting a memorial to the soldiers.
by Sean Doyle The submissive toadying and deferential fawning emanating from certain pundits in their approach to a crucial event in Irish history is exasperating many people. My expectation was and is that we should have a wonderful, dignified commemoration next year to celebrate 100 years of independence; a turning point in our history which we should mark with joy and delight. There is no need for triumphalism and ignorant shouting from the highest pole or the proverbial dunghill. Reconciliation wasn’t an issue in the 1916 Rising; and we should remember and not forget that it is the 1916 Rising we are commemorating. Reconciliation is for today’s generation and we should all be making our own efforts at its realisation. Honesty and truth are essential elements for true reconciliation. We should resist the attempts of revisionists to make us ashamed of our birthright – we are proud to live in an independent State and we make no apologies to anyone.
We are not perfect; we can only improve. We s h o u l d h a v e a n Independence Day declared here and the Centenary Year would be the ideal year to announce such a unique National Day of Remembrance for all who made the supreme sacrifice for our freedom. It should be separate from all other commemorative days. Outside of Dublin, Enniscorthy must be accepted as a major centre of commemoration of the Rising. The town’s and Co. Wexford’s contribution to the fight for independence should be recognised by the powers that be. It is hoped that the recent statement of the Minister of State, Deputy Paul Kehoe, that the National Committee is to give due recognition to the part that Enniscorthy and Co. Wexford played in the Rising will be generously realised. It is our expectation that funds will made available to refurbish the Athenaeum – the Headquarters of Rising in Enniscorthy and from its stage Pádraig Pearse spoke some weeks before the fateful event of Easter Week. n
In appreciation
Re-enactors in Market Square, Enniscorthy, Easter Monday 2015.
Enniscorthy Historic & Reenactment Society would like to extend a most sincere ‘Thank You’ to all who turned out for our 1916 battle re-enactment at Market Square on Easter Monday. We would also like to take the opportunity to thank Lord Edward’s Own, Kilkenny and Ashbourne Re-enactors and the very glamorous Cobh Animation Ladies for being part of our ‘Living History’ event and for adding to what we hope was an enjoyable, informative and interesting experience for all. Our mission is to bring the history, heritage and culture of our town and county alive on the streets of Enniscorthy for native and visitor alike to sample, savour and enjoy, and to take Enniscorthy and Wexford and its colourful past out to a wider audience through our participation in other Re-enactments and Commemorations around the country and indeed beyond.
To this end Enniscorthy Historic & Re-enactment Society has been invited by the Cobh Animation Team to participate in the Lusitania Burial Ceremony on Sunday 10th May in Cobh as part of their 100th Anniversary Commemorations of the sinking of the American liner by a German U boat off the coast of Cork. We are also delighted to be performing a Rebel & Redcoat Re-enactment at Wells House on Monday 4th May and participating in the Duncannon Re- enactment weekend on the June Bank Holiday. Along with that, members of our group are travelling to Belgium in June to be part of the world renowned Battle of Waterloo which attracts over 20,000 visitors annually. A plethora of forthcoming events will give us an opportunity to promote and advertise our own Vinegar Hill Re-enactment in August.
We are always recruiting so if you would like to be part of this new and exciting endeavour in the town please contact Rory O’Connor at Enniscorthy Castle or the 1798 Centre or phone him at 087-0520399 or through our Facebook Page at Enniscorthy Historic & Reenactment Society. Or alternatively, if you are organising an event/ parade/ vintage fair/garden fete, etc., and would like us to perform a re-enactment or be part of the spectacle please do not hesitate to contact us. At present we can re-enact 1798 Crown Forces and Pikemen, women a n d c h i l d re n , 1 9 1 6 I r i s h Volunteers, Flying Columns, Cumann na mBan, Nurses and Civilians and WW1 and WW11 Allied and German Forces, as we continue our work on an extensive repertoire spanning the decades in Enniscorthy and Wexford. – Maria Nolan

Enniscorthy’s new car park A new, public, car-park at
'Murphy's Yard' on Mill Yard Lane (opposite Enniscorthy Health Centre) opened at the beginning of April. At €2 for a full day's park-
ing, it represents great value for money for the general public. Hopefully, those remaining shop owners and their staff who park outside their own premises (thereby depriving
themselves and their neighbouring businesses of potential customers) will take the opportunity to use this great new facility so close to the town centre. n
Enniscorthy’s Cathy launches major tourism initiative Last Friday, 24th April, one of the best known and loved figures in Co. Wexford’s tourist industry launched (with the help of local Minister Paul Kehoe) her latest initiative aimed at promoting tourism in Wexford and beyond to a growing number of visitors. It was fitting that the launch should t a k e p l a c e a t C a t h y ’s favourite historical site – Vinegar Hill. Enniscorthy’s Cathy Keane has been running bus tours around Enniscorthy and Co. Wexford since 2010. This service has now been expanded and launched as Heritage Tours Wexford.
With the recent launch of Ireland’s Ancient East trail by Fáilte Ireland (see page 21) there will undoubtedly be an increase in visitor numbers to Enniscorthy and Co. Wexford generally. With her extensive knowledge of this area and its history and culture, the friendly, informative and accommodating Cathy is looking forward to meeting the challenge of servicing this expanding tourism market. In 2015 Cathy’s tours will include: 1798 Rebellion in Fr Murphy's Footsteps Tour; Wexford Garden Trail Tour; T h e P u g i n Tr a i l – A n Exploration of Pugin Churches across County Wexford;
Dunbrody Famine Ship, The Kennedy Homestead and Hook Lighthouse Tour; and Ferns Castle, village and Ballymore Historic Features Tour. According to Cathy, “We are so lucky to live in such a wonderful, culturally rich area and we have so much to offer to our visitors. I want to ensure that when people get off the boat in Rosslare that they spend time here and not just pass through it on their way to other places.” Cathy can be contacted on 087-3299900, email heritagetourswexford@gmail.com, http://www.heritagetourswexford/n

I lose my phone in more stupid places than I can possibly count. I seriously considered installing a landline so that I can call my phone the three times per day it goes missing. But Google just made something even better. Type three magic words into search, and you’ll find your missing handset. Type “find my phone” into Google, and provided you’re logged into your browser with the same Google account as your phone, you’ll instantly get a map of its location, along with the option to ring it. To get at more serious settings, like the option to wipe your phone, before anyone can Facebook those nudes, you’ll still need Android Device Manager installed. Hope & Dream 10 – bigger and better The 2015 Hope & Dream 10 mile run and 10k walk took place on April 12th and was a great success thanks to the amazing and supportive people of Enniscorthy and Co. Wexford. At the time of going to press sponsorship money is still coming in, so we cannot report a final total. This will be announced at the Cheque Presentation Ceremony in May. All sponsorship money will be split 50:50 between the Hope Cancer Support Centre and the Wexford Branch of Console. A decision in relation to next
year’s split has yet to be made by the Board of Directors. The final figure for participants registered this year was 2,260 which was a remarkable 9% increase in the number registered in 2014 despite the blustery and damp weather conditions. 68% registered for the 10 km walk, 32% for the 10 mile run. 72% of participants were female and 28% male. The youngest participant was 9 (who participated with the 34th Wexford Davidstown Cubs/Scouts/Ventures under their own insurance) and the oldest was 79! n

Chairman Des Croke was delighted to welcome and honour members of the Rapparees Feile-winning team – Captain Odhran Carty and Vice Captain Anto Larkin and their mentors – John Walsh, Fran Carty, Michael O’Toole and Jason Sheridan to the l a u n c h o f t h e We x f o r d Supporters Calendar of Events 2015 at the Riverside Park Hotel on Thursday 9th April. ‘Our Mission’, he said, ‘is to assist, both financially and otherwise in the promotion of excellence of all Wexford teams’ as he complimented the Rapparees on their win and congratulated them on having silverware to savour so early in the season. The Wexford Minor Hurlers and Leinster League Champions had also been invited to the launch with their trophy but due
to preparations for their first championship outing against Laois on Saturday 11th at Innovate Wexford Park they were unable to make it and good wishes were extended to them by the Chairman from all at the Wexford Supporters Club. Des thanked all for their support in 2014 and outlined plans for this year kicking off with our annual Golf Classic on 8th May at Courtown Golf Club, asking all the clubs in the county to consider putting forward a team. This will be followed in July by a Mountain Trail Walk in the Blackstairs at a date to be decided. Bill Mernagh outlined plans for the annual Dog Night on Thursday 13th August saying that last year’s event was a major success thanks to the presence of our U-21 hurlers,
ladies footballers and camogie players and the efforts of a very hard-working committee. Bill said a great night was had by all and thanked the large crowds for attending and McCauley Chemists for sponsoring photos of children with U-21 hurlers and female counterparts. ‘It definitely added something special to the occasion’, Bill went on, ‘as kids queued in numbers to be snapped with their heroes’. Bill looked forward to another good turnout this year and asked all to come along to what is a wonderful night’s entertainment for all the family. Two other events are being discussed for later in the year – a Gala GAA Fashion Show and a concert in the fabulous Spiegeltent during the Opera Festival – details to be decided.
Last year €28,000 was prov i d e d b y t h e We x f o r d Supporters Club to the County Board to assist in the preparation and progression of all our Wexford teams. This year we hope to improve on that figure with your support. Local Minister Paul Kehoe has welcomed the central role announced for Enniscorthy in the 1916 Centenary Programme. T h e “ I re l a n d 2 0 1 6 : Commemorative Programme,” launched on Tuesday March 31st at the National Museum, has revealed that Enniscorthy has been selected as one of the locations outside of Dublin where a National State Ceremony will take place in commemoration of the 1916 Rising. The events in Enniscorthy during Easter Week 1916 give the town and County Wexford a significant place in the history of the Rising. The commemorations will involve synchronised wreath-laying ceremonies on Easter Monday at 1.15pm, the time the first shots of the 1916 Rising were fired. Speaking at the announcement of the Programme Minister Kehoe said, “This is a

Funding for social housing Walk with us out of darkness into light Director of Services at Wexford County Council Mr. John Carley has welcomed the funding announcement by Minister Alan Kelly, T.D. of €25.3 million to Wexford County Council to fund its Social Housing Programme over the next three years. Wexford County Council’s Social Housing Programme 2015 to 2017 will utilise a range of housing-supply measures including house acquisition, construction and
leasing to provide homes for the people of Wexford with an agreed target to provide 677 new accommodation units and in doing so to reduce the county’s housing list by 27%. “This very significant funding initiative will reinstate Wexford County Council to a central role in providing housing for the people of Wexford. The ambitious programme will not only significantly reduce the housing list but also act as a job stimulus by
creating additional employment opportunities within the construction sector”, said Mr. Carley. Mr. Carley further added “This is a great day for Wexford with such a significant investment in Wexford’s Housing Programme and we look forward to immediately putting in place a resource plan to action the implementation of the Programme and to deliver on the targets set out.” n

On Friday 17th April groups from Enniscorthy, Courtown and Arklow came together at the Arklow Bay Hotel for the South East Launch of this year’s Darkness Into Light 5K walk/run for Pieta House. Founder of Pieta House and the Darkness Into Light event, Joan Freeman, said, `We have come a long way in a very short time, from our first ever Darkness Into Light Walk in 2009 at a single location this year we have over 80 locations all around Ireland and the world including London, New York, Sydney, Melbourne, Perth even as far away as Shanghai! This she attributed to the marvellous workers at Pieta House and to the wonderful volunteers in all the venues around the country and of course to the generous and steadfast sponsorship of Electric Ireland. Speaking for the Enniscorthy venue, John Hendrick Chairman of Shamrocks GAA Club said that both the Rapparees/ Starlights and Shamrocks GAA clubs were delighted to be involved once again for the third year running with this really worthwhile project. ‘Suicide affects us all and is all too common in today’s soci-
ety. Because of our involvement with young people and young men in particular, we in Rapparees/ Starlights and Shamrocks GAA clubs are only too glad to do our bit t o a r re s t t h e spread of this most tragic illness. In our first year 2 0 1 3 w e w e re amazed when 800 people showed up at 4am to participate in what was Wexford’s first ever DIL Walk, last year 2014 we had approximately 1,200 people and this year we hope to exceed that and get our numbers up to 1500.’ In Enniscorthy the Rapparees/Starlights and Shamrocks GAA Clubs will come together to co-ordinate and promote the event at 4.15am on Saturday 9th May. Registration can be done now online and we will also be setting up a Registration Office compliments of Councillor James Browne who has very kindly offered us space at his Slaney

Enniscorthy’s Rose Our beautiful Strawberry Queen, Ciara Butler, represented Enniscorthy and the Strawberry Fest at the Rose of Tralee Selection at White’s Hotel on Saturday 4th April. There were 16 contestants from all around the county and they were accompanied by charming little Rosebuds chosen through a schools’ competition and our little charmer, Eva Bayley from St. Mary’s N.S., was a huge hit as she belted out the theme song from Frozen – Let It Go – to the delight of the entire White’s Hotel audience. Ciara did us proud in amazingly talented company where looks are just one element of a plethora of attributes that the judges are seeking in the girl who will be chosen to go forward to the next heat of the competition in Portlaoise. Many of these beautiful girls are lawyers, nurses, accountants, teachers, carers and students who play camogie, ladies football and go kayaking and point-to-point racing, play classical piano and sing beautifully. One of them, AnneMarie Blake, had actually gotten through to the final 12 of the Miss Universe competition, another Grainne Keeling had represented her country at World Youth Day in Brazil and had met Pope Francis. The same lady had shown dogs at Crufts and is studying law in Maynooth. Yet another, Joanne McCabe, runs her own business called Colla Voce teaching both adults and children to sing. Many
had creative poems to recite whilst others had heroic tales to tell of exploits and injuries on the playing fields and some entertained us with lovely renditions of well known songs such as Caledonia and She Moved Through The Fair. They were all accomplished women none more so than the lovely reigning Rose of Tralee herself, Maria Walsh, who despite living in Philadelphia, USA, managed to make it over for these heats, leaving one in Wicklow to be with us on Saturday evening in White’s along with the gorgeous 2014 Wexford Rose, Deirdre Miskella, who was lavish in her praise of the event as she told everyone what an absolutely fabulous year she has had as the Wexford Rose. MC for the evening, debonair Galwegian Ollie Tu r n e r, t h e n m a d e t h e announcement everyone was waiting for – the Wexford Rose going forward was the deserving Trish Carty, a nurse from Temple Street Hospital now working in Enniscorthy’s Community Workshop and representing Tomkins Suzuki. Trish hails from the well known GAA Cartys of Castletown and will no doubt be a wonderful Ambassador for the county and we wish her well in the Portlaoise Heat where 70 girls will compete over 3 Selection Nights with the dashing Daithi O’Shea. And the advice given by the reigning Rose of Tralee was embrace it and enjoy it – good advice Maria. – Maria Nolan

If You Think You Know Smokie Smokie will be playing in the National Opera House, Wexford, on 16th May Smokie are an English rock band from Bradford, Yorkshire. The band found success at home and the rest of the world after teaming up with songwriters Nicky Chinn and Mike Chapman. Through the years they have had a number of line-up changes and are still actively touring to this day. Their most famous hit singles include If You Think You Know How To Love Me, and Don’t Play Your Rock And Roll To Me. Their most popular single Living Next Door To Alice peaked at No. 5 on the UK Singles Chart in March 1977 and reached No. 25 on the Billboard Hot 100. The band went through many names in their formative years including The Yen, Sphynx and The Essence. They were formed in 1965 after a chance meeting between Ron Kelly and Alan Silson in Bradford. Two days after that meeting they were joined by Chris Norman and practised together without finding a suitable bass player. Terry Uttley joined the other band members as bass player at the beginning of 1965. Their first gig under the name Yen was at Birkenshaw School in February 1965. As Essence, they toured small clubs in Bradford and the surrounding communities before splitting in 1966. Alan Silson and Ron Kelly joined a band called The Black Cats who were already a working band and replaced the drummer they had at the time. Chris Norman joined the band in 1967
replacing singer/guitarist Pete Eastwood. In November 1967 they changed their name to The Four Corners. In April 1968 the group found a manager in Mark Jordan, who advised them to rename themselves The Elizabethens. The group became fully professional, and the members were paid higher salaries. In June 1968 Terry Uttley joined the group as a replacement for Arthur Higgins. On the 9th of December 1968 they got their first TV appearance on Yorkshire Television’s news and magazine show Calender. In August 1969 the group performed two songs for the BBC show High Jinx. Pleased with a successful performance, Jordan got them to perform their first demo tape. In January 1970 RCA showed an interest in the band and suggested a name change to Kindness. A single was recorded and the double A-side Light of Love/ Lindy Lou was released on 3rd of April 1970. Only 300 copies sold, and RCA terminated their record contract. In late 1971 the band was taken over by Dave Eager, a Radio One DJ, and Chris Norman suffered a serious infection that affected his vocal cords. After his recovery, his voice sounded much rougher, which the group members considered added to their sound. Eager introduced them to Decca, and in February 1972 the single Oh Julie / I Love You Carolina was released. Shortly after another single was released Let the Good

Times Roll. The single was well received by the media but did not translate into record sales and led to Decca terminating their contracts. In 1973 a man named Bill Hurley convinced Dave Eager to release them from their contract as he wanted to manage them. Hurley introduced the band to composers Nicky Chinn and Mike Chapman who at this time had made household names of Sweet, Mud and Suzi Quatro. At first ChinniChap turned them down, but Hurley’s tenacity eventually convinced the composers to give the young group a chance. Hurley and ChinniChap suggested they change their name to Smokey. In late 1974 they began recording sessions for their debut album Pass It Around which was released on 14th February 1975. The album failed to gain attention from the British audience. On 22nd September 1975 Smokey released their second album Changing All The Time. This LP sounded much softer than the debut album. The first single from the new album If You Think You Know How To Love Me quickly became a big hit in many European countries. It went to No. 3 in the British charts and won Smokey a wider audience. They followed it with Don’t Play Your Rock n Roll To Me. That same year the US soul legend Smokey Robinson threatened to file a lawsuit, alleging that the band’s name would confuse the audience, so the
JIMMY MURPHY takes a look at the band’s evolution group spelled their name Smokie. Their third LP was produced in the US and was called Midnight Café. The following year yielded a string of successful singles, Something’s Been Making Me Blue, Wild Wild Angels and I’ll Meet You At Midnight gained a faithful following among younger listeners. When the single Living Next Door To Alice was released in November 1976, it quickly became the group’s biggest hit, followed by Lay Back In The Arms Of Someone. They now became European superstars with sold-out tours and million-selling albums. The next two albums, 1977’s Bright Lights And Back Alleys and The Montreux Album (1978) were
both chart successes. Two singles from the Bright Lights album became hits, It’s Your Life and Needles And Pins which was originally recorded by the Searchers. In 1982 the last album, Strangers In Paradise, was almost a complete failure. In 1986 lead singer Chris Norman decided to leave the band after having success with a solo album Some Hearts Are Diamonds. He was replaced by Alan Barton of Black Lace who had a similar style voice to Chris Norman’s. The band also brought Martin Bullard on board as a keyboard player. Pete Spencer also left and was replaced by Steve Pinnel. Sadly while they were touring, the band’s tour bus careered off the
road during a hail storm. Barton was seriously injured and died five days later. The remaining members decided to continue after Mike Craft became the lead singer. To this present day Smokie are as popular as they ever were, they continually tour the world and play to sold-out venues. The present line-up is Terry Uttley, Martin Bullard, Steve Pinnell, Mike Craft, Mick McConnell. Don’t miss your opportunity to see Smokie at the National Opera House on Saturday 16th May. You won’t be disappointed!! This is their only south east date!!!! In the next issue I will be writing about the pop group Slade. n

The Case for the Prosecution
You DeCiDe!
by Emma Morris The Woman In Black is by no means the worst horror film ever made, but it does commit the biggest cardinal sin in film-making: for the better part of an hour and a half, it bored me. That's not to say that the actors were bad: Daniel Radcliffe and Ciarán Hinds are wonderful in it (albeit badly cast in Radcliffe's case), but they are lacking in any material to make this film interesting or indeed even scary. I'm not sure if that's due to the book it's based on, or if it's more to do with the scriptwriting part of it, but overall the film has an inadequate amount of material and plot development to be worthy of 90 minutes of screen time. While 90 minutes is short for a film nowadays, but for this one in particular it's about 30 minutes too long. The film is a traditional ghost story by any standards – a small village, terrified of a ghost that makes the children that live there kill themselves, a big creepy house in the middle of nowhere, creepy noises and glimpses of dead people. It's full of horror movie clichés with lots of fog, movements in the peripheral of the screen, and unfriendly townsfolk warning Radcliffe's character to stay away from the house and leave forever.
HARRY POTTER GROWS UP (AND GETS HAUNTED) Ok, I admit it. You got me. I hold my hands up. When I first heard of the plans to film The Woman In Black, I was excited but hesitant. Excited because I had heard nothing but good things about the stage production and had read the story myself. Hesitant because it was going to star Daniel Radcliffe. You know, him of the Hogwarts variety and he possessed of a baby face. A face that would look twelve even if he shaved off his head hair and taped it on to his cheeks. A hit with the ladies one would assume but when you have to portray a grieving MAN, it does not bode well. I balked and I posted on the internet as a lot of armchair film nerds did. And as unbelievable as it sounds, the filmmakers and the studio did not care for our concerns and made it anyway! I know right, the sheer nerve of not listening to whiny nerds on the internet. The cheek. You would almost think moaning online means
29 April 2015
The Woman In Black is set in Victorian England. Radcliffe plays troubled widower and lawyer, Arthur Kipps, who is trying to raise his son after his wife’s death during childbirth. He travels to a small village in a last-ditch attempt to save himself from being fired where his task is to sort out the paperwork for an elderly deceased client, and sell her house. Warned off by the locals, shunned, and sent away, he befriends what seems to be the only sane man in the village, Sam Daily, and the only person who is willing to help him. The other villagers are terrified of this house and what haunts it, but Kipps is full of disbelief in their legends. He goes to the house, set on finishing what he has been sent to do. Slowly he comes to believe in their superstition, as children begin to die around him: one coughs up blood and falls into his arm, and another sets herself on fire. Kipps and Daily become convinced the only way to stop the poltergeist is to reunite her with her dead son, and they devise a plan in an attempt make this happen. A large portion of the film consists of: Arthur hears a noise. Arthur investigates the noise. Arthur wanders into rooms, trying to figure out the noise.
of the screen shots. Director James Watkins does his best with other components: lighting and sharp edits, framing and the use of music, but overall it's just a let-down, as most horror films these days tend to be. Now, I do love Daniel Radcliffe. He is a wonderful actor, and he does his best in his first leading role post Harry Potter, but he cannot pull off the father-ofa-four-year-old, working as a lawyer role. He's just too young looking to be the proper choice for this role, and this detracts from the father/son relationship they're trying to build in the story. The plot is already quite lacking in any substantial events or real hooks to reel you in, and the miscasting of Radcliffe just adds to the feeling of dissatisfaction I felt while watching it.
Arthur feels a sense of foreboding. Arthur straightens shoulders, shakes head, then dismisses said noise. Now, if the film cut out the majority of this, it would be about half an hour shorter, and much less boring overall. It really feels like the majority of the film consists of Radcliffe walking
The Case for the Defence
nothing and has little to no impact……. Anyway. The film was made and not only was I pleasantly surprised by a mature, nuanced performance by Radcliffe (more on that later), I was also blown away by the movie itself. Being a horror movie buff I subsequently caught up on mostly all of The Hammer Horror movies from the 1970’s. If you haven’t seen any, do yourself a favour and rectify that. They are nothing short of sublime. (Even, hell, especially the “bad ones!”). The Woman In Black instantly reminded me of those movies. It looks, feels and I’m sure smells like a British horror movie from that period and indeed that studio. All the ingredients are there. Wispy, foggy English countryside. A countryside that is awash with intrigue, mystery and ultimately death!! The film opens with three young girls having a tea party in their attic, Edwardian era England in a picturesque village named Crythin Gifford. They look up
into a room, looking around, and then walking out again. There are too many stagnant moments in the film, and far too many jump scares (seriously, a horror film does not need something in the peripheral of the screen every two minutes), and too many ghosts/body parts in the corner
by Jamie Murphy in the corner, are spooked by an unseen presence and thrown themselves out the window one by one. A ridiculously strong opening scene and sets the tone for the rest of the movie beautifully. The power of the unseen, and foregoing gore for simple, down-at-home chills. Fast forward a few years, London based lawyer Arthur Kipps (Radcliffe) is sent to Crythin Gifford to oversee the sale of Eel Marsh House and examine the papers left by its deceased owner, Alice Drablow. He is met with instant disdain by the locals but welcomed and offered board by wealthy local l an down e r S a m u el Da i l y (Ciaran Hinds) and his wife Elisabeth (Janet McTeer). On
his first visit to the house, Kipps is met with unknown noises and disturbing incidents. Further on down the line, there are deaths of children in the village. A lot of deaths, one of which occurs when one of them ingests lye and dies in Arthur’s arms. The locals try to pass it off as a suicide but some are suspicious because the noises and incidents in the house were caused by “The Woman In Black”. I won’t say any more about the woman or indeed her connection to the town as it will involve me giving up major spoilers in the plot. And I am not an evil guy. As I stated earlier, I enjoyed every minute of this movie. And for many, many reasons.
There are various attempts to build the mood and suspense. Creepy porcelain dolls, creepy porcelain clowns, creepy musicmaking toys (all used repeatedly), ominous warnings from the village folk, different shots of the house and the many, many, MANY shots of all the ghost-haunting moments: hands, faces, people in windows, people in the grounds, people standing ominously in the background, and the ghosts of some of which I will divulge to y o u n o w, d e a r r e a d e r. Atmosphere in horror movies is, for me anyway, one of the most important things to have. This film has it in spades. Filmed in a constant fog of black and greys, the film has an ever-present evil tone and at times it impressed me so much I was reminded of Nosferatu. That sense of dread and just waiting for something to go horribly wrong. Another plus is the lack of blood, guts and gore. No “torture porn” visuals here a la Saw, Hostel or The Human Centipede. Now don’t get me wrong, I love all three of those films but this film is my kind of horror. Slow burning, atmospheric and the scares, despite sometimes being formulaic, work effectively well. There are a few standout scenes but the big one for me was the almost twelve-minute-plus sequence in the bedroom. As I said before, I won’t give away spoilers but I will never look at a doll’s rocking chair the same way again!
various dead children. There are actually so many attempts to build the mood that it sadly becomes slightly overkill. This is one of those times where less is more, and shorter is better. Maybe it is the lack of material, but the attempts to build suspense go on for too long, and happen so frequently that they actually become quite cumbersome. Boring horror movies are the worst, but The Woman In Black is often boring because of its overuse of suspense: it's desensitising, and makes you almost immune to the jump scares after a point. And don't get me started on the end of the film. I remember when the trailer for The Woman in Black first came out, I was actually quite looking forward to it because, unlike all other trailers, it didn't give away the whole plot, and it was so well done it made it seem truly creepy. Then I remember going to see it, and being very disappointed. And that's ultimately what this film is: disappointing, clichéd (in a bad way) and very tedious. Save yourself some time and don't bother with this one, and if you want a decent horror movie that's been released recently, watch Occulus instead. n Now for Mr. Radcliffe. Despite giving him sideburns and a five o’clock shadow, he still looks like Harry Potter. But if you look past that, he actually gives a good little performance and adds a certain pathos to Kipps. A lot has been said about his poor performance but I think this is a tad unfair, his performance while not amazing is quite solid and in his defence, the film is not a character study. It is a film about a mysterious woman who has tormented the village and its inhabitants for years. The star of the show it has to be said is the house in which most of the noises and incidents occur. It is a marvel of production and seems to have a life of its own whenever it is featured. The shades of grey and black inhabit its walls and it just feels creepy in general. It is almost a character in itself. The film is really enjoyable and has some fantastic scares. It also looks amazing with the colours and textures adding to an already unnerving atmosphere!! Go out and find it if you haven’t seen it… But avoid the sequel!!!!! n

Verdict: If you made me laugh and feel happy and entertained, well you’ve done a great job people. Well done – you did it for me. Well done also to all the backroom people – directors, hair, wardrobe, makeup etc. The props were good also – I noticed they were in and out like clockwork on the stage with no delay between scenes. You are also heroes and winners. On The Run, the band, gave us some tunes at the beginning of the night and they put us in the mood. The real winners are Hope and Hospice – really worthy causes. County Wexford Hospice Homecare Service was established in 1991 and is giving care to patients in the home and community. We will all need care at some time in our lives so it is great to know these people are in our communities. I’m Donal Cullen and I say Thank You to all the performers for the laughs and great entertainment. You must do it again if only to cheer us all up from our woes. – Donal Cullen

Zorro Fest in Wexford Wexford Zorrofest is an arts and cultural event celebrating the life of Wexford man William Lamport (1615-1659) and the much loved fictional hero he inspired, Zorro. Lamport probably wasn't the first Wexford man to be born with a desire to see the world but he must surely rank as one of those who most successfully made his mark on his
travels. He is still remembered with love and respect in Mexico, his adopted home for the latter half of his life, where he lived an exciting and wonderful life and was one of the first to agitate for Mexican independence. Wexford ZorroFest takes place mainly on Saturday 2nd May and continues on Friday 8th. Check out: “Wexford Zorrofest” on Facebook. n

MAY ENTERTAINMENT All venues are in Enniscorthy unless otherwise stated.
In March and April Marshalstown, Camross, and Newbawn/Adamstown drama groups staged a series of variety shows which went down very well with all the audiences. The purpose of these performances was to raise awareness and some money for Hope and Hospice care with a raffle each night. I must say from my point of view I really enjoyed the night I went to the Bellefield show – it was first class entertainment with everybody giving their best performance – all the performers seemed to be in their element. Jim Morris, Myles Lambert and Ann Nolan of Marshalstown Group had everybody in stitches – laughter brought the house down. Morris and Butler always provide great entertainment whenever they perform. That’s Dick you know. Pity he didn’t sing a bar of a song this outing. Kelly, Foley and Banville for Camross had the place rocking with laughter too. The combo of Newbawn and Adamstown had plenty of Bradley and Byrnes between them and one couldn’t help but be entertained by them. Splendid stuff.

This month i’d like to remind you of the best nutrition available to you during your precious pregnancy days. Eating a healthy, varied diet in pregnancy will help you to get all the vitamins and minerals you need. There are some vitamins and minerals that are especially important and you should take care that you are including them in your daily meals. Please come into Grant’s if you have any concerns over your pregnancy diet. ViTAMiN SuPPlEMENTS It is best to get vitamins and minerals from the food you eat, but when you are pregnant you will need to take some supplements as well. • 10 micrograms of vitamin D each day throughout your pregnancy and if you breastfeed • 400 micrograms of folic acid each day – ideally you should take this from before you are pregnant until you are 12 weeks pregnant Do not take vitamin A supplements, or any supplements containing vitamin A, as too much could harm your baby. If you want to get your folic acid or vitamin D from a multivitamin

Reeds Restaurant at the fourstar Ferrycarrig Hotel has been re-designed following an extensive renovation. The redesigned restaurant was unveiled while hosting Wexford Chamber ’s first Business After Hours Networking Event of 2015 on Thursday, March 26th. The redesign of Reeds features a sweeping change of décor; and with its unique setting special attention was also placed on accentuating the fantastic view of the Slaney estuary and its varied wildlife passing by for its patrons. To complete the brand new look Executive Head Chef Tony Carty has developed a new approach to the menu composition and its presentation. Dishes feature an extensive list of fresh ingredients from local suppliers ranging from Rosslare Crabmeat, Enniscorthy Ribeye Steak, Kilmore Hake, Rack of Slaney Valley Lamb and Killowen Farm Yoghurt
to name but a few. Commenting at the relaunch of Reeds Restaurant, Michael Griffin CEO of The Griffin Group said, “We believe in being “of our place”; so in every step of this project we committed to using local contractors and suppliers wherever possible. Our focus was on utilising the best of local ingredients and a re-emphasis of our fantastic location. Understanding the key to any good restaurant is in its ability to deliver great food with excellent customer service consistently; we have paid very close attention to this aspect of the new Reeds Restaurant. I would like to thank all the employees of Ferrycarrig Hotel for their tremendous commitment to delivering a truly great dining experience for our customers. We are all genuinely excited to welcome people back to the new and improved Reeds Restaurant”. Also speaking at the launch
Vitamins and nutrition in pregnancy by Leonie Grant, Grant’s Pharmacy tablet, make sure that the tablet does not contain vitamin A (or retinol). FOliC ACiD Folic acid is important for pregnancy as it can help prevent birth defects known as neural tube defects, which can cause conditions such as spina bifida. You should take a 400 microgram folic acid tablet every day while you are trying to get pregnant and until you are 12 weeks pregnant. If you didn't take folic acid before you conceived, you should start as soon as you find out that you are pregnant. You should also eat foods that contain folic acid, such as green leafy vegetables and brown rice. Some breakfast cereals, breads and margarines have folic acid added to them. You need to take a bigger dose of folic acid if: • you have had a baby with spina bifida • you have diabetes • you are taking medicine for epilepsy • you have coeliac disease
ViTAMiN D You need vitamin D to keep your bones healthy and to provide your baby with enough vitamin D for the first few months of his/her life. You should take a supplement of 10 micrograms of vitamin D each day. Vitamin D regulates the amount of calcium and phosphate in the body, and these are needed to help keep bones and teeth healthy. Only a few foods contain vitamin D. The best source of vitamin D is summer sunlight on your skin. iRON If you are short of iron, you’ll probably get very tired and may suffer from anaemia. Lean meat, green leafy vegetables and dried fruit contain iron. Many breakfast cereals have iron added. If the iron level in your blood becomes low, your GP or midwife will advise you to take iron supplements available at the pharmacy. ViTAMiN C You need vitamin C as it may
help you to absorb iron from food. Citrus fruit, tomatoes, broccoli, peppers, blackcurrants, potatoes and some pure fruit juices are good sources of vitamin C. If your iron levels are low, it may help to drink orange juice with an ironrich meal. CAlCiuM Calcium is vital for making your baby's bones and teeth. Dairy products and fish with edible bones – such as sardines – are rich in calcium. Breakfast cereals, dried fruit – such as figs and apricots – bread, almonds, tofu and green leafy vegetables – such as watercress, broccoli and curly kale – are other good sources of calcium. You also need to know which foods to avoid in pregnancy: • Some types of cheese • Pâté • Raw or partially cooked eggs • Liver • Raw or undercooked meat • Supplements containing vitamin A • Some types of fish
Leonie Grant
• Sushi • Raw shellfish • Cold cured meats • Peanuts • Unpasteurised milk • Foods with soil on them • Caffeine Some countries advise pregnant women not to eat cold meats or smoked fish because of the risk that the food may contain listeria bacteria. The risk of infection is very low in Ireland and many eat these foods without problem however, if you’re concerned, you may choose to avoid them. You can get listeriosis (which usually results in flu-like symptoms) from food containing listeria bacteria. Although listeriosis is a very rare infection, it’s impor-
of Reeds, General Manager at the Ferrycarrig Hotel Derek Coyne commented: “I am delighted to see continued investment into the Ferrycarrig Hotel by the Griffin family. They have been an integral part of the business community in Wexford since the 1960’s. It was a pleasure working with Michael and Liam Anthony on this and many other projects that are exciting for the future of the company. I am very pleased to be a part of this new chapter and my team and I are fully committed to delivering new standards of excellence to all our customers.” The renovation delivers a luxurious space for diners to experience dishes of wonderful Wexford produce set in a unique, picture-postcard setting. Reeds Restaurant is open seven days a week serving full dinner and early bird menus. For reservations call 0539120999 or e-mail reedsdining@ferrycarrighotel.ie n tant to take special precautions during pregnancy. Even a mild form of the illness in a pregnant woman can lead to miscarriage or stillbirth, or severe illness in a newborn baby. Although it’s safe to eat smoked fish and cooked cold meats, pregnant women are advised to avoid other foods that may contain listeria. These include: • mould-ripened soft cheeses such as brie, camembert, chèvre (a type of goats' cheese) and others with a similar rind • soft blue-veined cheeses, such as Danish blue, gorgonzola and roquefort • all types of pâté, including vegetable pâté To protect against the risk of listeriosis from all ready-to-eat foods, including cold meats and smoked fish, it’s important that you: • eat the food before its useby date • store it correctly in the fridge at a temperature below 5C A specialised vitamin and mineral pregnancy supplement is available at Grant’s Pharmacy, so please ask our staff for advice about the best supplement to meet your needs and keep well in your pregnancy. n

Fast news!
Enniscorthy will be one of the first towns to benefit from the new 1gb per second broadband service
incredibly fast broadband is on its way later this year to 350 towns in ireland including ENNiSCORTHY, WEXFORD and GOREY. The new venture’s connection will come in at about 1gb per second – the gold standard in internet speeds from a corporate point of view. There are no plans to bring the service to Dublin at present. With the maximum browsing speed available in the capital at the moment being 240 mb/s, this means that rural Ireland’s internet service will soon be four times as fast as that available in Dublin. The €450 million service is a joint effort between the ESB and Vodafone and will be going
live in an initial 50 towns from this autumn including Enniscorthy, Wexford and Gorey. The speeds achievable with the new technology (which operates using the ESB’s existing electricity infrastructure) will put the likes of Enniscorthy on a par with broadband seen in globally advanced cities such as Tokyo and Hong Kong. Eircom have a similarly speedy service on the way which will be in direct competition with ESB/Vodafone. There is also the government’s €500 million National Broadband Plan which is scheduled to connect every Irish household to the broadband network by 2020. n

WEXFORD TOURISM ON THE NATIONAL STAGE… Tourism info & networking Visit Wexford Tourism hosted a free information and Networking event on April 20th at White’s Hotel, Wexford. The event unveiled the brand new Visit Wexford television advertisement which is set to air on RTE and TV3 for 6 weeks in the lead into the Summer period. The thirty-second TV advert is the first of its kind to air promoting Wexford as a number one choice for a holiday in Ireland; the advert has been voiced by the famous Wexford Ambassador and TV personality Dermot O’Leary. The event also detailed the other extensive marketing activities which have been devised to promote the county nationally and internationally this year through a significant campaign which has been jointly funded by Wexford County Council and the tourism industry in Wexford.
This campaign also includes a number of national radio competitions set to take place along with a multi-site billboard campaign at high traffic areas in Dublin and Cork cities along with a new Visit Wexford welcome billboard at Rosslare Port. Wexford will also feature extensively on the TV national events guide and a brand new brochure promoting Wexford will be hosted at over 500 locations across Dublin, the Southeast and at Dublin Airport, Waterford Airport and the ferry ports. Chairperson of Visit Wexford Bettie Marie Burger-Smit said, “In Wexford we are all actually already involved in the tourism business as we all have an impact on every individual tourists experience while they are here; be it when they are visiting a local attraction or when they asking directions on the street, it is dur-
ing those experiences where we all contribute to the overall tourism experience and the friendliness of visiting Wexford.” Visit Wexford was officially formed in 2011 and has been promoting Wexford as a tourism destination since the official launch of visitwexford.ie in May 2011. Since then the profile of Wexford has been invested in by Wexford County Council, Wexford stakeholders and Failte Ireland through the promotion of visitwexford.ie which achieves approximately 12,000 visitors per month and is supported by a full social media campaign and offline PR communications. The brand also hosts a free smart phone app, both the app and the website offer all businesses in Wexford an opportunity for listing and hosts a free event guide listing for all festival and event organisers. n

“Ireland’s Ancient East” Wexford County Council has welcomed the launch by Fáilte ireland of “ireland’s Ancient East”, a destination brand that offers overseas visitors a compelling, motivating reason to visit the Midlands, East and South of ireland. Ireland’s Ancient East is geared to match and complement the Wild Atlantic Way in terms of scale and ambition by maximising and exploiting the history and heritage of counties in the Midlands, East and South and bringing these areas to greater international attention as a viable and cohesive visitor destination. Wexford County Council Head of Enterprise Mr. Tom Banville feels that County Wexford is well positioned to take advantage of this targeted marketing approach. “This is a real opportunity for County Wexford as part of the East and South East to project ourselves as a real, authentic and historic destination to the world tourism market” said Mr. Banville. “It also presents an opportunity for businesses and communities to be part of the initiative. County Wexford has many unique and engaging stories to tell in terms
of local history, heritage and culture. ‘Ireland’s Ancient East’ will allow us tell these stories to a wider audience and will build on the significant investment which has been made in tourism attractions in our county over the last few years. I am confident this initiative has real potential to deliver significant additional numbers of visitors, revenue and jobs”, said Mr. Banville. Mr. Banville added “We recognise that “Ireland’s Ancient East” is an evolving initiative with much work to do. We look forward to working alongside Fáilte Ireland in engaging with businesses and communities throughout County Wexford, those already in existence and those proposed, to help further develop and maximise their particular tourism offering in the context of this welcome marketing initiative”. Meanwhile, Cllr Malcolm Byrne, Chairman, Wexford County Council, has reacted angrily to the less-than-hopedfor Co. Wexford content in the initiative: “I feel really angry about this. We had been talking about branding Wexford as Ireland's artistic and historic county. From the Ancient Gaelic
Cllr Malcolm Byrne, Chairperson, Wexford County Council
Capital at Ferns, to the Vikings arriving in Wexford, to Diarmuid MacMurrough's invitation to the Normans and their landing at Bannow, through the events of 1798 and the Kennedy connections, among so many others. Look at the Department press release on this – we don't even get a mention with regard to Norman Ireland! I can't believe some Council officials are so afraid to criticise any Government agency. Failte Ireland generally do a good job but we have to ask them the question as to why they chose to do an international historic tourism promotion and relegated one of the most historic parts of the country to mere footnotes!?” n

VET DIARY FOR MAY with the Moyne Veterinary Clinic
This month, Joe Kavanagh, looks at Energy Medicine. A couple of months ago Fred and his brother, two Corgi dogs, came in to the clinic for their check-ups. All went pretty uneventfully and they headed off happy that the chances were they wouldn't be seeing me for a good while! Well this time it didn't happen that way. Fred ended coming back a couple of weeks later with a pretty serious condition, hemi paresis of the hind legs… losing the use of his hind legs. I assessed his movement, or lack of it, checked the automatic reflexes in his limbs and for pain. He was in obvious discomfort and so we needed to help alleviate this. It was a serious situation. What was going through my mind too was what brought on this condition so suddenly and how come there wasn't any inkling of it on his previous visit? With my conventional veterinary hat on I did all the checks but was missing something. So I used my other training in complementary medicine to assess the case too. Now I realised that his pelvis had shifted out of line thereby, in my opinion, causing the spinal column to alter/bend and so causing excess pressure in the sacroiliac area i.e. the lower back. This is very similar to what happens to humans too. The spinal column can be considered like a rod and looking from behind this should look straight. If the pelvis tilts, rotates or shifts significantly then we can get a bending of the column, hence the term 'bulging discs'. This can pinch the nerves causing pain and muscle spasm. Well we got to work on Fred, helping to realign the pelvis using a discipline called Kinesiology, balancing the electromagnetic field using a technique called bioenergy and gave him both herbal remedies and standard heavy-duty antiinflammatory meds. His owners were just brilliant. They took him back initially every few days and as he started to improve we were able to stretch this out to every week or two and I'm happy to report that Fred made a full recovery and is flying again. For me the great thing was the faith the family had in the whole process, they did everything to help his recovery and were so very patient with him in the initial stages when it looked like nothing was working. My father often used to say to the farmers “good nursing is 90% of any medication” and it was this loving care and attention that they gave which winged him back to health.

And a good dollop of faith in the process! The beauty of Energy Medicine is that it works with the underlying issues and not so much the obvious problems, so hopefully like in Fred's case you get a longer-lasting resolution to the problem. n

View from the Hill WexfoRd Co. CounCil The Local Government Auditor has found that Wexford Co. Council is technically insolvent. I find it difficult to understand as to how the Council is technically insolvent. It’s either solvent or insolvent. If you or I have a business we are solvent or not solvent. There’s no in between. If a private company or business is insolvent it is an offence for that company or business to continue trading. So where does that leave Wexford Co. Council? In particular it should be explained as to how a “technically” insolvent council or entity of any description can continue not only to trade but make a significant num-
ber of high level, highly paid appointments while in such a financial situation. No other business could do it. But then private businesses can’t tap into the taxpayer to bail themselves out. Unless you are a bank that is. Renua in Co. WexfoRd Lucinda Creighton’s new party Renua is working hard on the ground to establish itself throughout the country. Co. Wexford is no exception with a candidate already selected to contest the next election. The selection of Shane Dunphy, who is a psychologist, as that candidate, in my view, is premature in the extreme.
In the first instance the method of selection is peculiar and not very democratic. Apparently Mr. Dunphy was requested by Eddie Hobbs who is the President of Renua to stand as their representative and after due consideration agreed to do so. Mr. Dunphy confirmed this in a recent radio interview. Therefore the new party is asking people to join its ranks without been given any opportunity to have a say in the selection of the individual who will carry the Renua banner in to the next election. Furthermore, while Mr. Dunphy has many fine qualities and is a person of outstanding integrity, he is not a household name in Co. Wexford and is practically unknown outside of his own area of activity despite spending some time as a presenter with South East Radio some years ago. One has to ask, how politically naïve are the organisers of this new party who have literally put the cart before the horse in this instance. Surely the pragmatic and sensible thing to do would have been to launch a recruitment drive first, see what or who join up, and then allow the new party members to select their candidate. Possibly some well-connected, well-known
individuals may have joined and from those ranks a potential candidate could have been selected. It could well be that Mr. Dunphy would have been selected anyway but at least the party members, if they recruit any, would feel that they were working for their choice of candidate. It will be interesting to see how this works out. SAME SEx MARRIAGE The Referendum on Same Sex Marriage will take place on May 22nd next. National opinion polls indicate that it will be carried without too much bother. But quite honestly I don’t know if that will be the case. In all elections, particularly referenda on controversial issues, the people to watch out for are the silent voters. Apart from those who are committed to political parties or campaigning on one side or the other I have heard very little on this issue from people I meet every day of the week. People are saying little or nothing. To me this is a sign that a lot of those who intend to vote will not go along with the general consensus view being put forward by the political parties and the mainstream media. It seems that almost anyone who is anybody is pushing this Yes vote down the throats of
the public at large. We are being almost dictated to at this stage that we must do this. If I were in any movement advocating a Yes vote I would be very careful when trying to persuade the Irish people on this matter. In previous referenda where all-party agreement existed the public rejected the official consensus view and made their own choice. The same could very well happen here. Whatever the outcome the surprise may well be the size of the No vote. one YeaR on It’s hard to believe that a year has almost passed since we elected our new Municipal District Council. That year has seen great changes at local government level with the disappearance of the old Town Council, and with it much loved characters like Sean Doyle, Jackser Owens and Tom Moorehouse. In fairness to the new council it seems to be finding its feet at this point with old stalwarts such as Johnny Mythen, Paddy Kavanagh and Keith Doyle being joined by people like Kathleen Codd Nolan and Barbara-Anne Murphy who although they have years of political experience are somewhat new to urban politics and affairs (of the political nature that is, just in case).
Paddy Kavanagh of course sort of straddled the urban rural divide for years and is one of those people who seems to be as much at home in town or country. James Browne and John O’Rourke seem to be working away with O’Rourke taking up a lot of the space which in previous Town Councils would have been occupied by the aforementioned former councillors. Oliver Walsh seems to have faded into the background somewhat but then Oliver was always more of a constituency work man rather than a speechmaker. In a past column I was somewhat critical of the visibility level of the majority of the new council members but maybe now that the Municipal Council has settled down and had its role clearly defined we will see and hear more from our public representatives. Whatever the case they will be in office until 2019 and it is imperative that as the economy slowly recovers that the District of Enniscorthy has a strong voice to ensure that this recovery gets directed down our way. n We are often asked: Who is the “View from the Hill” columnist? All we can say is that the author’s surname is NOT Doyle!

newyearsresolution2, 5k was founded by Mag dunphy on Jan 1st 2015. The group has attracted people who have never run before, were never motivated to run and people who wanted to make a comeback to running. With the help of friends they meet two night a week, Monday & Fridays 8-9pm on the running track in Enniscorthy. In January, the main aim was to build up towards run-
ning a 5k. To date, the group has ran many 5ks and even trained to complete the Hope & Dream 10k. So they have way surpassed what they set out to do. Proving that anyone can do this. You can catch up on all that’s going on within the group, on their facebook page, of the same name. If you would like to join the beginner running group, contact the facebook page or call to the track and join in one of the training nights. n

caroline gets motoring ford focus review by Caroline Kidd
The ford focus is one of ireland’s bestselling cars and in this scenario the public has got it right. The ford focus is one of the finest handling hatchbacks around. Yet of late the interior and exterior styling were starting to look a little bit tired and this was giving a competitive advantage to newer and flashier rivals. Enter the new Focus. While under the skin there have been a few small changes to cement the connected-tothe-road feel that is so much part of the Focus DNA, the most obvious changes have been to how it looks inside and out. To start, a new grille, bonnet and headlamps lift the whole look of the car. They’ve sorted out the rear as well – the tail lights are slimmer and a few extra creases here and there give the car a more elegant shape. Inside, there is a new steering wheel design and the tripcomputer graphics have been updated to make them more legible. Most of the changes have been reserved for the centre console, where Ford has removed a lot of the fiddly little buttons that used to sit there. They’ve also introduced a more modern infotainment system called Sync 2 that comes with an 8 inch colour touchscreen. It’s nice to use and looks good in the centre of the dash but sadly it’s an option, not standard. But on all but the very base model, you do get a version of Sync that comes with

This represents a strong 32% increase over Q.1 2014. The equivalent number for 2014 was 57,268. In Q.1 of 2015 there have been 303,750 used vehicle transactions (including imports) representing an 11% increase in activity in this market.

CLASSIC CAr SHoW The annual Classic Car Show at Wells House and Gardens, Ballyedmond, Gorey, will take place on 24th May at 12 noon with proceeds to the Make a Wish foundation. The roundabout at Wells House will host an array of cars from modern day sports to vintage. There will also be a BBQ and live music to add to the atmosphere on the day. n
a 4.2 inch screen that can be operated via voice or steeringwheel-mounted controls, and includes a Bluetooth connection for hands-free calls. The new Focus hasn’t changed in size compared to the old car. The space in the cabin was never an issue for the Focus. But the boot is small by class standards at 316 litres – though a spare wheel is included. But if you are a keen driver then none of this really matters because you will buy the Focus because it is the best handling hatchback around. Ford has revised the suspension and increased what they call the “structural stiffness of the front”. The changes are subtle and the steering is as crisp as ever. Other rivals come close in terms of good handling and precise steering but it’s the execution of it that is so impressive in the Ford. The Focus feels so elastic going around a bend, the whole car feels stiff and stuck to the road. There are four trim levels
– Focus, Style, Zetec and Titanium – and three body styles – hatch, saloon and estate. You can choose from 1.6 diesels (94bhp or 113bhp), a 2.0 litre diesel (148bhp) or two versions of Ford’s awardwinning EcoBoost 1.0 litre turbocharged petrol unit (99bhp or 123bhp). Some engines are only available on certain trim levels. I drove the Focus with the 1.0 litre EcoBoost (123bhp) and it’s definitely worth a look. Despite the small on paper capacity (1.0 litre), it’s amazing how much power and performance Ford has squeezed out of it. It’s very smooth and refined for a three cylinder engine and with 123bhp, there’s ample power too. The very base model looks a bit sparse in terms of equipment – you need to go up to Style for alloy wheels and air conditioning. But with the Focus range starting at €20,295, you will be surprised at how affordable some of the more top of the range
models actually are. For example, the car I was driving was in top of the range Titanium trim and came well kitted out. With the 1.0 litre EcoBoost (123bhp) under the bonnet, it has a list price of €25,295. The car feels much more expensive than that from behind the wheel. With its new look and improved interior, the Focus is a much more rounded product now. There is a great choice of engines from frugal diesels to lively petrols. And let’s not forget that this is one of the finest handling hatchbacks money can buy. That makes this Ford Focus a very hard car to beat. Model Tested: Ford Focus 5 door Hatch Titanium. Price: €25,295 (Range starts at €20,295). Engine: 1.0 litre three-cylinder turbo petrol. Power: 123bhp. 0-100km/h: 11 seconds. Economy: 60mpg (4.7l/100km). CO2 Emissions: 108g/km. Motor Tax: €190 per year n

by Caroline Kidd a survey by the Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (CCPC) shows that it pays to shop around when looking for motor insurance. Quotes were sought from eight insurance providers based on nine different driver profiles varying in age, location, driver experience and other lifestyle factors. Potential savings were seen across all of the profiles surveyed. For comprehensive cover the difference in quotes received was found to be between €156 and €1,249. For third party fire and theft the difference in quotes ranged from €137 to €975.
For one of the profiles an increase in penalty points from 2 to 6 points resulted in an increase of 37% for comprehensive cover and 49% for third party fire and theft. Just two of the eight insurers surveyed provided a quote for a driver with six penalty points. The survey also revealed the variation in benefits offered and the range of excesses included in policies. Excesses (the amount that a consumer will have to pay in the event of a claim) for comprehensive policies ranged from €200 to €550, and for third party fire and theft, the policy excesses varied
between €0 and €500. In terms of no-claims bonuses, the survey found there were differences across each of the providers in the application of the bonus. For example, there were variations in the number of years the bonus can be earned over. The maximum bonus discount that could be earned varied between 50% and 75%. The take-home message: we can make significant savings on our motor insurance by getting quotes from more than one insurer and taking time to research the options before buying a policy! n

fASHION SuCCeSS fOr CySTIC fIBrOSIS Put a Bow on it and ann Jacob came out on tops in the recent fashion with a difference (and makeover night) in the Riverside Park Hotel, enniscorthy, in aid of Cystic fibrosis ireland. You can forget about New York, Milan, London and Paris as Enniscorthy models took to the catwalk to raise funds for the Co. Wexford branch of Cystic Fibrosis Ireland. All the models were excellent and to look at them you’d think they were at it for years – they were all stunning and did a great job on the night. Four shops were each asked to pick a model for a makeover – each of the four women was introduced as normal and later shown to the judges after their makeover. The four makeover models were Ann Jacob (overall winner) representing Put A Bow On It, Edel MacDonald Cunningham representing Mary Elizabeths, Anne Gilpin representing O’Faolain’s and Unique’s Margaret Stamp. Each lady did an onstage interview with MC Denise Gordon and the judges came back with an unanimous decision that Anna was the winner for Put A Bow On It. Each shop showed off their collections. In the first fashion show were Unique and Put A Bow On It. Showing off the style for the latter were ex-Strawberry Queen Leanne Hore followed by her sister Louise Hore, Aoife Doran, Caroline Doyle, Katherine Kenny and the madeover Ann Jacob. Unique models were Mary Ormond, Daisy Breen, Yvonne Sweeney, Gabrielle Whitty and the madeover Margaret Stamp. Half-time local acts were Maria Gordon, Jamie T and Kerry Morrissey, and Sinead Haze brought the entertainment to a close. The second half fashion show featured O’Faolain’s and modelling were Liz Mitchell, Ellen Murphy, Helen Bernie and the madeover Anne Gilpin. Then followed Mary Elizabeth’s models – Goisa, Deirdre

The Plough and the Stars comes to Enniscorthy enniscorthy drama Group in line with the current focus on cultural events in the build up to 2016 has decided to stage the popular o`Casey play The Plough and the Stars at The Presentation Centre as the first of its summer 2015 productions. Under director, Jimmy Kavanagh, the 15-strong cast are already in rehearsals for dates 18th/19th/20th June at 8pm nightly. ’We are very excited about staging this classic and delighted to have Jimmy Kavanagh at the helm, a talented veteran who has director the play successfully before’, said Chairman of the group
Liam Doyle. It’s a while since it’s been done in Enniscorthy and people are looking forward to seeing it again and you couldn’t get a better venue than the aesthetic Presentation Centre. We would like to take this opportunity to express our sincere thanks to Padraig O’Gorman and the staff of the Municipal District Council for putting the venue at our disposal for rehearsals and live shows.’ ‘Last year we staged two very successful summer plays, the comedy Tom, Dick and Harry and the brilliant Glengarry Glen Ross, both going down extremely well with
Enniscorthy audiences. This year we took the decision to continue with our summer productions and perhaps add another two for autumn and winter. Our mission is to see drama thrive again in the Cathedral town for the exhilaration of actor and spectator alike and we hope we are already on the road to making this happen.’ With your support The Plough and The Stars will be yet another success for Enniscorthy drama and we hope to unearth even more local talent, so watch this space for further details. – Maria Nolan PrO

WEXFORD RESIDENT’S NEW BOOK ON BOB DYLAN End of Year Year

in his latest book, love And Theft? Bob Dylan’s Celtic Odyssey, Wexford resident Jackie Hayden explores the impact that the music and musicians of ireland, Scotland, Wales and england had on the music of Bob dylan. The book traces the origins of the British and irish songs that featured in dylan’s repertoire or inspired his own songs, and along the way explodes the myth that dylan “went electric” at the newport folk festival in 1965. Hayden also examines Dylan's relationships with artists as revered as The Beatles, Rolling Stones, U2, Van Morrison and others who have performed, written and recorded with him during his prolific career. The book also includes a reprinting of an interview conducted exclu-
sively by Bono with Dylan, and previously only available in Hot Press. The Wexford-based author recently spent a month in Sweden as a “writer-in-residence” and love And Theft? Bob Dylan’s Celtic Odyssey was launched there as an ebook for Amazon Kindle at a special event in the State library in Tranas. According to Hayden, “Dylan was enormously influenced by the music from the Celtic nations, but to date most of the credit has been given only to The Clancy Brothers and Martin Carthy. Yet the influence of British and Irish music and musicians on Dylan’s work goes way beyond those two significant artists. His repertoire contained many Irish songs,
including ‘Eileen Aroon’ and ‘The Auld Triangle’.” As for the claim that Dylan “went electric” in 1965, Hayden argues that Dylan actually started out as an electric performer, playing piano in rock’n’roll bands, including a stint with Bobby Vee, and openly
admitting to his love of the music of Little Richard. “Then he discovered folk music and reshaped music forever”, he claims. love And Theft? Bob Dylan’s Celtic Odyssey by Jackie Hayden is available for Kindle download on Amazon $7.49. n

New Slaney Writing… Taxi
HoPe and HoPe
by Martin Joseph Byrne
by Donal Cullen
An interesting poem with peace in its core. Waiting on a taxi like silence in an elevator We connect like the switches in her bag She the enterprise of her country I tried to talk her out of it, ferry to the Saxon War in her thoughts, love at the tip of a soldering iron She sits in our taxi like Connolly in his chair We part at Connolly station like steam off a wet motorway. Anann in the name of on the six o clock news I rip the Proclamation off the wall I dust her flat of my prints and walk away The expurgated wasteland of the Provo Days like a rose bush on fire Nights like the silence of a confessional Now I exist in taxis like Connolly in his ready-made grave. n
I hope to hope a brighter future I long to see the day, When no one will want. When love and peace Will conquer all that is bad. I hope to hope a brighter world When all people of our nations are free, In mind and body, our hearts free Our paths are free to wander. To wander on pastures green a glorious earth song so pretty At rest in the cosmos. Hope and hope A brighter world. n
