comment The highlight of the past month in Enniscorthy was undoubtedly the official opening of the town’s new Sports Hub. It’s not every day of the week that Enniscorthy gets a €1m facility of this kind. In the words of local Council Chairperson, Barbara-Anne Murphy, “The opening of Enniscorthy Sports Hub is a wonderful day for all the people of Wexford and surrounding areas… Our county has a proud and enviable record when it comes to sporting success. Enniscorthy Sports Hub has the capacity to add further to that success and as a modern sports facility of international standard, will add greatly to the sports infrastructure of the entire southeast region.” We look forward to the sporting and economic success of this In foreground L-R: magnificent facility for Cllr Barbara-Anne Murphy, the town. Enniscorthy Sports Hub officially opened Enniscorthy’s all-weather, state-of-the-art athletics facility was officially opened by Wexford County Council on Saturday, 16th May, 2015, and will undoubtedly be a major boost to sports tourism in the region. Enniscorthy Sports Hub is built to exacting IAAF standards, and constructed at a cost of approx €1m. This ultra modern regional sports facility is expected to attract large numbers of users from all o v e r We x f o r d a n d t h e Southeast region. Facilities at Enniscorthy Sports Hub include an allweather 400 metre eight-lane track which is fully floodlit. It includes long jump and high jump areas, steeplechase, and a range of field sports facilities. This new Sports Hub is fully accessible and also boasts an in-field area which will be available to a range of sporting activities. The entire project has been funded by Wexford County Council with grant aid from the Department of Transport Tourism and Sport under the Sports Capital Programme. The official opening programme commenced at 1.30pm with senior men’s and ladies races, paralympian throws, high jumps and underage relays, followed at 2.45pm

by a parade of sports groups from all over Wexford. The official ribbon-cutting ceremony took place at 3.00pm, and was performed by Councillor Barbara-Anne Murphy, Cathaoirleach of Enniscorthy District of Wexford County Council. Cllr. Murphy was assisted by well known sports personality Mr. John Treacy, Olympian and CEO of the Irish Sports Council. The official opening ceremony was immediately fol-

lowed by an open afternoon where all athletes, young and old, could try out the track and participate in a host of track and field events, coached by skilled instructors. “The opening of Enniscorthy Sports Hub is a wonderful day for all the people of Wexford and surrounding areas” said Cllr. Murphy. Wexford County Council Chief Executive Tom Enright also welcomed the official opening of Enniscorthy Sports

Remembering Pat Cody

Family and friends of the late Cllr Pat Cody gathered on Friday 15th May at one of Pat’s favourite places, Vinegar Hill, to unveil a new seat there in his honour. Moving tributes were paid to Pat by his family and by his political and Council colleagues including Minister Brendan Howlin TD and Cllr Barbara-Anne Murphy, Chairperson of Enniscorthy Municipal District. And a moving rendition of ‘Boolavogue’ was poignantly sung by Niall Wall and Paul O’Reilly. Great credit is due to Padraig O’Gorman and the staff of Enniscorthy Municipal District for the wonderful work done on this memorial and for the inclusion of some of Pat’s own poetry on a plaque on the seat – a thoughtful addition. n

Gone to the dogs! Once again the memory of the late Michael Foley was alive, strong and obvious by the large gathering that turned out to the Michael Foley Bursary annual Race Night at Enniscorthy Dog Track. In conjunction with Enniscorthy Rugby Club this is always a well attended and most enjoyable occasion with the family, friends and team mates of the very popular and well remembered Michael and Sunday 3rd May was no exception. Special guests of course for the evening – the Provincial Towns Cups which took pride of place on display at the track bar. All races were sponsored and sincere thanks to Bolger Bros Hardware, MSS Services, Ensor, O’Connor, Rapparees/ Starlights GAA, PE Kelly Insurance, Global Steel, Cooney Furlong, Kavanagh Pharmacy, Eugene Doyle Accountants, Padraic Donohoe, Slaney Foods and Walmac Engineering. With fabulous raffle prizes including two pairs of Ed Sheeran tickets, tickets for Ireland V Scotland rugby, a colour TV and numerous hampers this was not just

excellent entertainment but excellent value as well. Winners as follows: 1st Prize: 2 Tickets for Ed Sheeran: Mervyn Minnion. 2nd Prize: 2 Tickets for Ed Sheeran: Brian Fortune. 3 rd P r i z e : 2 Ti c k e t s f o r Autumn Internationals: Emma Boyne. 4th Prize: Hamper with sweets & spirits : Trevor Jacob. 5th Prize: Hamper with 6 bottles of wine: Billy Heffernan. 6th Prize: Color TV (24" Flat Screen): Gina Murphy. Winners of Bewley's Hampers: Cecil Willoughly, Nick Lett, Billy Heffernan, Brigette Heffernan. A night for all the family to enjoy and well done to the

organising committee especially Phil and Jim Kearney, Michael and Lorraine Dempsey of Enniscorthy Dog Track, Enniscorthy Rugby Club, C&R Print, and Terri Foley and Majella Murphy for providing refreshments and Mr. Liam Spratt who was as eloquent as ever on the public address. And last but by no means least all those who turned up to support the night. It’s not difficult to see why the Bursary is so successful, each time there is an event all of the late Michael’s friends and colleagues turn out in force – a wonderful testament to a great man and a special friend. – Maria Nolan

I n t e r n et h e a lt h c h e c k I want to cover two things this month, how to check your Internet speed, and how to check the health of this connection. The first one is simple, the speed test. Open a browser and go to Speedtest.net, and click on begin test. After about a minute, the test will finish and you'll have your upload and download speeds. I like to run it around 3 times to get a good average. The second one, the internet health check, tests the quality of the connection. The American FCC recently established new rules to prevent ISPs from selectively degrading connections to certain services, like some have done in the past. This tool, from Fight for the Future, can check to see if this type of degradation is happening to you. The tool checks your connection to different locations throughout the internet that are outside your ISP’s own network. This helps determine whether there are choke points between various networks designed to slow down your connection. This type of slowdown famously occurred when Comcast throttled Netflix in order to negotiate a higher fee. On its own, the

The go-to-shoe for Summer height that enables you to run around has to be the Lidl ‘Esmara’ Wedge priced at €9.99.

When it comes to fashion we all have our on and off days. Personal style tends to be a reflection of how you feel and it’s important to feel comfortable and confident regardless if you are going for a comfy or a polished look. One trend that is very timeless in terms of female fashion is what has been dubbed ‘european chic.’ That slouchy flattering chic tee, tapered trouser and wedges combo that seems so effortless for day to day wear yet still smart casual. Lidl have some gorgeous pieces from their new ‘Esmara’ collection that fits the bill at a fraction of your budget. From skinny belts to breton striped dresses – there is a real Topshop feel to the collection. n

To finish the look in terms of going for the tapered skimming look I recommend the ‘So Fabulous Turn back hem peg trousers’ which are €30 on www. littlewoodsireland.ie. The cut off point above the ankle elongates the foot and looks more feminine. You can get this style of trouser in a varied range of colours on the high street and online at the minute.

This spoT can be yours for €60+VaT or €50+VaT each if you book

The Lidl ‘Esmara Ladies’ Long Top is super flattering due to it’s butterfly sleeves and comes in sizes 6-24. It is a steal at €5.99 and has a slightly grecian fall.

The truly amazing Marie Chapman The words Amazing, Inspirational, Super, Legend and Fantastic – these are just some of the words used to describe Marie Chapman. Marie recently took part in an epic 100 mile challenge, following the River Thames and with a cut off of only 28 hours to complete. Marie is a role model for her clubs Slaney Olympic and Marathon Club of Ireland, she is one of only a handful of ladies from Wexford to have completed such an extreme distance running event. The Thames Path 100 Mile is a 100 mile race which begins in Richmond, London. It’s a 95% trail based race, the pathways are an interwoven mix of gravel, grass, clay, tarmac, muck (lots of it), to crossing numerous canal locks and bridges. Probably one of the most scenic and historically beautiful routes possible, the winding paths of the Thames lead their way through Windsor Castle, Maiden Head, Henley,

Reading and finishes at Queens College, Oxford. To get an understanding of the level of difficulty and the magnitude of the immense challenge, this 100 miler has the highest dropout rate of the four centurion 100 races. Last year alone, 33% of the field had to drop out along the way, of the 239 who started, 79 did not finish, this year 82 dropped out. As 260 runners lined up on the start line, Slaney Olympic’s Marie Chapman was flying the flag for Wexford and for Ireland donning the mandatory survival kit which weighed about 4 kg and prepared her for every eventuality. The race began on an overcast morning with a light breeze, but the weather was changeable along the way. On the whole, the conditions were kind to the runners. As light fell to dark, light drizzle turned to heavy rain which saw the beginning of the difficult underfoot conditions.

Her support crew of Denise Kinsella and Danielle Dempsey first made contact with Marie at the 21 mile mark. As per usual

with Marie, she was running strong with a smile on her face. At 5pm as Marie approached the 35 mile mark the enormity of the

task ahead started to hit home. H o w e v e r, i n t r u e M a r i e Chapman style by mile 42 she was in good spirits again and looking forward to hitting the 51 mile mark in Henley. At nightfall Marie arrived in Henley, from here crew members were allowed to pace runners as requested. Unknown to Denise and Danielle at the time, they would run, taking in turns the following 44 miles of the race, supporting Marie through darkness into light. Night time proved the most challenging section of the race, light was only by head torches. Runners had to navigate their own way along the banks of the Thames, following only pieces of tape that were hung along the route, these were often few and far between. As Marie approached the 85 mile marker, the finish line seemed to be within touching distance with only 3 more aid stations to pass. However, the reality of the remaining distance was still real as many run-

ners looked to be in real difficulty at this point. After making our last contact with Marie at 95 miles, torrential rain fell, and even still Marie remained determined and focused. As exhausted, weary runners set their eyes upon the finish line they immediately perked up and accelerated towards their ultimate goal. Marie was no exception to this finishing with a jump of elation over the finish line. Astonishingly, in her first ever attempt at this distance, Marie completed the 100 miles in a time of 23 hours. This qualified Marie for an exclusive “1 Day Buckle”, which is an award to those who completed the event in 24 hours or under. Another amazing achievement to add to your long list. Well done Marie, you really are an inspiration. – Slaney Olympic Many thanks to Marie’s support crew Denise Kinsella and Danielle Dempsey for all their help with the race report above.

Republic Day in Enniscorthy On Thursday 24th April 1916 Padraig Pearse read the Proclamation from the steps of the GPO at 12 noon declaring Ireland a Republic. At 12 noon on Thursday 24th April 2015 – 99 years later – groups of people came together in various locations around the country and as far away as Australia to read the same Proclamation including our own Enniscorthy where a group came together at our historic Market Square. The Proclamation was read by Margaret O’Neill and a wreath laid at the Monument of Father Murphy and the Croppy Boy by Bridget Murphy in memory of all who lost their lives in the struggle for Irish freedom. The ceremony continued with a Piper’s Lament and a few words from that well known exponent of Enniscorthy chronology Mr. Sean Og Doyle.

Sean said that there was no more fitting place than Market Square, Enniscorthy, for the occasion, it being the scene of many a skirmish in the 1798 campaign and through which on 27th April at 4am Irish Volunteers marched on their way to take the Athenaeum where Seamus Doyle read the Proclamation thus entering Enniscorthy into the annals of Irish history once again. The aim of the event organised by Ray Murphy is to commemorate and honour that moment of identity when Ireland declared herself a Republic and to create awareness about a campaign in the wake of the 100th Anniversary to have 24th April recognised nationally as Republic Day similar to Independence Day in America or Bastille Day in France. – Maria Nolan

Words spoken by Sean Doyle in the Market Square, Enniscorthy, on 24th April 2015 – the 99th Anniversary of the 1916 Rising on the actual date of the Rising… “Tamid bailthe le cheile chun onóir a thabhairt do na fir agus mná a fuair bás ar son ár dtire. Tugamis onóir doibh, agus guimis ar a son. Yes, we honour all who made the supreme sacrifice for the freedom of Ireland. Today, the 24 April 2015 is the 99th Anniversary of the Easter Rising. It was on Monday, the 24th April 1916, that the Rising commenced in Dublin when P á d r a i g P e a r s e re a d t h e Proclamation of the Irish Republic on the steps of the G.P.O. There are few more fitting locations to remember such a momentous and influential event in our history than the Market Square in Enniscorthy. On the 28th May 1798 the first Battle of Enniscorthy took place up the street at the Duffry Gate. The ensuing fighting spilled over onto the spot where we are now standing. Twenty five days later the decisive Battle of the 1798 Rebellion, the Battle of Vinegar Hill, was fought. Again fierce hand to hand fighting occurred in the Market Square and surrounding streets as William Barker, Father Mogue Kearns and the Insurgents attempted to prevent General Johnson and his men from capturing the bridge, now named William Barker Bridge.

On Thursday morning, the 27th April 1916 at 4.00am, about 300 Volunteers marched up from Keegan’s of Irish Street across the Market Square under t h e c o m m a n d o f Vi c e Commandant P.P. Galligan and took possession of the Athenaeum and set up their Headquarters. Séamus O ’ D u b h g h a i l l re a d t h e Proclamation. The Tricolour was hoisted and thus Enniscorthy entered the annals of the 1916 Rising. We are surrounded by physical reminders of both significant events in Irish history. The Athenaeum is situated a couple of hundred yards away, we are within sight of Vinegar Hill, Oliver Shepard’s magnificent Bronze Memorial of Father Murphy and the Croppy Boy is just a few feet away. Rafter Street

and Weafer Street lead to the Market Square. The streets commemorate two brave men who made the supreme sacrifice. From this renowned centre of the struggle for freedom and democracy, the centre of the Model County, the very heart of so much valiant effort for Irish independence, where ‘our heroes vainly stood back to back’, on behalf of you all I call upon the Irish Government to set aside a special day and name it Independence Day. The heroic sacrifices of the 1798 Insurgents, of the 1916 Volunteers, the soldiers of the War of Independence and many others from other periods of our history of resistance to foreign rule could be properly honoured with no confusion with brave people who fought for other nations in other wars.

I’ll conclude by quoting a few lines I said here on this spot on Easter Monday, 2001. “The many Irishmen and women who lost their lives down through the centuries, many who spent years in prison, many who suffered illhealth and deprivation, many who were transported, and many who suffered indignities, which eventually led to the creation of this State, surely deserve a special Commemoration Day. It should not be confused with any other Commemoration Day. The State owes it to all of them, and the location for the National Cenotaph must be Enniscorthy, the storm centre of the 1798 Rebellion and the last place to surrender in 1916”. – Seán Doyle 24 April 2015

Public lighting fault repairs Wexford County Council has announced the recent signing of a new contract to repair faulty street lights. The contract came into effect on Friday, 1st May 2015, and provides for the repair of a faulty light within five days of the fault being reported, where the issue is under the control of the local authority. This contract replaces the Council’s previous maintenance contract with Airtricity and will apply to all public street lights within the county.

To ensure that all street light faults can be recorded efficiently and attended to promptly, the Council has also developed a dedicated permanent link on its website. Simply visit www.wexford.ie and follow the streetlight link. If possible, please provide the street light number when reporting the fault, as this will greatly aid the identification of the light and speed up the repair of the fault. In the majority of cases, the streetlight number can be found on a sticker

on the pole approximately 2.5m above the ground. “Wexford County Council operates and maintains more than 12,000 public street lights at an annual cost of approximately €1.3m. It is essential that this public lighting infrastructure is maintained to the highest possible standard. The fault should be dealt with within 5 working days if the issue is within our control” said Mr. Tim Murphy, Senior Executive Engineer at Wexford County Council’s Roads Dept. n

Fun at Feile Fun at Feile – that was the message coming across loud and clear from Uachtarán Cumann Luthchleas Gael Aogan O’Fearghail as he visited schools across the county on Wednesday 13th May in the build up to the official Feile Launch at Ferrycarrig later that night. Feile is all about having fun and making friends he told the large gathering of children at St. Aidan’s Primary School, Enniscorthy ‘whether you win or lose doesn’t matter as long as you enjoy it’. The President and members of Wexford GAA, Secretary Margaret Doyle, Chairman of Ladies Football Denis Nolan, representatives of local club Rapparees/Starlights – PRO Maria Nolan and Coiste Chairman Jason Sheridan, Chairperson of the Municipal District Barbara-Anne Murphy, were special guests for the occasion but the most popular guest in the eyes of all the children present was current Wexford hurler Conor McDonald. Guests were treated to a musical interlude from Mr. John Ryan’s class and Irish dancing from All Ireland winner Aoife Conroy and then several children came on stage and told the audience and guests what the GAA meant to them. Each of them introduced themselves, spoke about their families, their clubs, their favourite players and mem-

bers of their families who had played and won with one girl remembering her grandmother who had won a camogie title with Dublin and yet another speaking of his grandfather who had played football with Laois, others had famous Wexford relatives like Nicky Rackard and Georgie O’Connor and one little lady, now playing Ladies Football, was actually from Poland. A really lovely feature with lots of wonderful sentiments expressed most of them boiling down to the 3F’s – Family, Friends and Fun and now we can add Feile in there too for good measure. At the end of his visit to St. Aidan’s the President held a Question and Answer session with the children, another excellent idea making the occasion informal and interactive with more questions than time as hands shot up all over the Presentation Hall as they all wanted to know where he was from, what club he played with, what did he win and how much money he was making as President of the GAA. When they found out that he had played with his club Drumgoold for 14 years without winning a game they were flabbergasted but when they found out that there was no money in the top job in the GAA they were stunned! Lusitania dead remembered Enniscorthy Historic & Re-enactment Society was honoured to be asked to participate in the Commemoration of the Lusitania Burials on Sunday 10th May at Cobh. 150 victims of the ill-fated liner were buried in three mass graves in Cobh Cemetery in 1915 and 100 years later the Funeral Procession was re-enacted in their memory through the streets of their final resting place. Because so many corpses were unidentified, despite the fact that the coffins were left open as long as possible for relatives who had begun flooding into the town to identify, the three large graves were marked simply A, B and C. `The funeral procession took almost 3 hours to pass through the streets that day on 10th May 1915. Shopkeepers closed their premises, offices were shut and curtains and blinds drawn in all the houses. The funeral bell peeled at the Cathedral and the coffins were loaded into horse drawn hearses and onto lorries and carts. Soldiers from the Connaught Rangers, the Royal Dublin Fusiliers and Royal Navy sailors from the moored ships, lined the route from the sea-level morgues along West Beach, East Beach and Harbour Row, up Harbour Hill and past the great dome of St. Colman’s. Townspeople came to the footpaths, standing mute and staring, the men with their caps or

hats off and clasped in their hands, the women numb and sad, the children looking on quietly. The flags on the ships in the harbour flew at half mast and the brass band of the Royal Dublin Fusiliers with muffled drums played Chopin’s Funeral March and the Dead March from Handel’s Saul.’ On Sunday 10th May 2015, 100 years later, Cobh and its people came out once again to remember and honour the Lusitania dead complete with horse drawn hearses, brass band, military and mounted police presence, Cathedral bell, period costumes and lined streets, Cobh relived that pitiful day etched forever in its history and Enniscorthy Historic & Re-enactment Society were privileged to be part of it. – Maria Nolan

Following last month’s popular look at Smokie prior to their performance at the National Opera House, Wexford, JIMMY MURPHY now takes a look at another iconic 1970s British rock band… Jimmy Murphy

You’ve been Slade!

Slade are an English rock band from Wolverhampton/ Walsall. They rose to prominence during the glam rock era of the early 1970s with 17 consecutive top 20 hits and six number ones. The British Hit Singles and Albums names them as the most successful British group of the 1970s based on sales of singles. They were the first act to achieve three singles enter at number one and all six of the band’s chart-toppers were penned by noddy Holder and Jim Lea. Total UK sales stand at 6,520,171, and their bestselling single, Merry Xmas Everybody, has sold in excess of one million copies. In 1964, drummer Don Powell and guitarist Dave Hill were part of a Midlands based group called The Vendors. Regulars on the club circuit, they had also recorded a privately pressed four-track EP. At the time Noddy Holder was playing guitar and contributing to vocals in Steve Brett And The Mavericks. Signed to Columbia Records, the band released three singles in 1965. After listening to American blues artists such as Sonny Boy Williamson, John Lee Hooker and Howlin’ Wolf, the band decided on a change of direction and name. As the N’Betweens they gained greater

recognition and began to get supporting gigs with acts such as The Hollies, The Yardbirds, Georgie Fame and Spencer Davis. The Mavericks and the N’Betweens were on their way to separate gigs in Germany when they met on a ferry in 1965. Powell and Hill asked Holder if he would be interested in joining the N’Betweens but he declined. Later in their home town of Wolverhampton, the musicians met again and this time Holder agreed to join the group. Jim Lea had already joined the group. Lea, who also played piano and guitar, had been in the Staffordshire Youth Orchestra and had gained first class honours in a London music school practical exam. In 1969 a local promoter, Roger Allen, spotted the band and alerted the head of A and R at Philips Records, Jack Baverstock. The group spent a week in the Philips studio at Stanhope Place recording an album, after which Baverstock offered to sign the group to F o n t a n a R e c o rd s i f t h e y changed their name and obtained London-based management. The band were initially hesitant because of the reputation gained as the N’Betweens, but eventually agreed to Ambrose Slade, a

name inspired by Baverstock’s secretary, who had named her handbag Ambrose and her shoes Slade. Baverstock also found the group an agent in John Gunnel, who had previously worked with the entertainment entrepreneur Robert Stigwood. The band’s debut album Beginnings was released in mid-1969 but turned out to be a commercial failure as was the follow-up single Wild Winds Are Blowing. The band were visited by Gunnell and his business partner, bassist with The Animals, Chas Chandler. Chandler was impressed with what he heard in the studio, and after seeing the band live the following day, offered to manage them. As Chandler had previous managerial experience with Jimi Hendrix, the band accepted. Chandler was not pleased with the debut album and thought that the group would benefit from writing their own material as well as a change of image. The band adopted a skinhead look as an attempt to gain publicity from what was a newsworthy youth fashion trend but this also adopted an unwelcome association with football hooliganism. Noddy Holder and Don Powell were practical, tough individuals already. In 1970 the band short-

ened their name to just Slade and released a new single, a cover of Shape of Things to Come, on the music show Top of the Pops but it failed to chart. Chandler had been managing the band for almost two years without success when he suggested releasing a version of the Bobby Marchan song Get Down and Get With It originally performed by Little Richard. Slade still enjoyed a good reputation as a live act and the song had been in their performances for many years. The song was released in mid-1971 and by August the single had entered the top 20 in the United Kingdom, peaking at 16. Chandler now demanded the band write a follow-up single themselves which led to Lea and Holder writing Coz I Luv You, which was written in half an hour and started a writing partnership that would con-

tinue through their career. The song went to number one in the charts. A second single entitled L o o k Wo t Yo u D u n w a s released in 1972 and peaked at number 4 and a live album was released in March. The album Slade Alive proved to be successful spending 52 weeks in the UK album charts and peaked at number 2. The next single Take Me Bak ‘Ome was their second number 1. The other singles were Mama Weer All Crazee Now, Cum on Feel the Noize, Skweeze Me Pleeze Me, Gudbuy T’ Jane and My Friend Stan. Merry Xmas Everybody was the last single of 1973 and the band’s last ever number 1. They released a new album Old, New, Borrowed and Blue in February 1974 and it went to number 1 in the UK. The following month saw a new single released entitled

Everyday and it went to number 3 in the UK charts and a follow-on single The Bangin’ Man reached Number 3. In the latter half of 1974 the band made a film Slade In Flame which was a tale of the rise and fall of a fictional 1960s group called Flame. A track from the film named Far Far Away was released reaching number 2 in the UK charts and topping the charts in Norway. Noddy Holder to this day says that Far Far Away is his favourite Slade song. The original band Slade officially split in 1992 and have certified sales of 520,000 albums and 1.8 million singles. The present lineup, which still tours extensively features Dave Hill (Guitar, Vocals), Mal McNulty (Vocals, Guitar), John Berry (Bass Guitar, Violin) and Don Powell (Drums, Percussion). Next month I will be looking at the fathers of heavy metal, Black Sabbath! n

Maria Nolan, Cyril Wheelock, Biddy White Lennon, Pat Roche and Anne Gilpin at the Strawberry, Culture & Food Fest Launch, 15th May, in Enniscorthy Castle.

Enniscorthy’s Four ‘F’s! The first ever ‘Strawberry, Culture & Food Fest’ was launched in the historic ambience of Enniscorthy Castle on Friday 15th May by Chairperson of Enniscorthy Municipal District, Barbara-Anne Murphy. And with the Four F’s – Focal, Feile, Food and Fest coming to town for the period 24-28th June Enniscorthy will be a hub of activity. The idea to move away from the traditional format of the Strawberry Fair and incorporate different events and activities into the same weekend, giving the punter a unique experience, was further enhanced by the GAA announcement that Feile Peil was coming to the counties of Wicklow, Carlow and Wexford for that weekend. What could be better, a chance to showcase our new Festival and our town to a wider audience from all over the country and beyond. That was the message coming through loud and clear from all of the representatives from all of the organisations involved – Pat Roche from the All Ireland Farmers Market, Cyril Wheelock from Strawberry Fest, Jim Hendrick from the the Show Committee, Maria Nolan for FOCAL Wexford Literary Festival, Bobby Goff for Feile Peil, Eamonn Doyle for Strawberry Roots gig trail and Damian Byrne for

Enniscorthy Business Association. Introduced by the eloquent Gerard Dunne and with MC for the evening – the lovely Anne Gilpin of Strawberry Fest, the well attended event heralds a new departure for the town, a bringing together of people, ideas, talents and skills to give native and visitor alike a view of Enniscorthy that they will never forget and a reason to return here time and again. Barbara-Anne thanked Padraig O’Gorman and the hardworking Committee who put the new Festival together saying that the Municipal District was delighted to support the new and exciting initiative. Enniscorthy will be welcoming Feile with a 10% Discount in all participating shops for those wearing their county or club colours. The Festival Parade will take place on Saturday 27th June at 6.30pm and will include local teams and visiting teams from all over Ireland along with Strawberry Princesses, Rock & Roll Dancers and Redcoats and Pikemen from Enniscorthy Historic & Re-enactment Society all culminating at the Showgrounds where the 2015 Strawberry Queen will be chosen and free musical entertainment will be provided. Barbara-Anne wished everyone a very happy and success-

ful Festival as she cut the ribbon and launched the Strawberry, Culture & Food Fest brochure. A very special thank you to

Enniscorthy Re-enactors who once again added colour and dash to the occasion. – Maria Nolan

Strawberry, Culture & Food Fest – Music: The Strawberry Roots Gig Trail will feature nearly 40 gigs in locals pubs and hotels. There will also be 2 major outdoor gigs in The Bailey carpark on Friday 26th and Sat 27th June. Full details in next month’s issue of 24th June.

Scintillating Sinfonia at The Presentation Centre The Memory Train Wind Ensemble on stage at The Presentation Centre. Pic: Maria Nolan.

Although not well advertised I was lucky to discover and attend the excellent Wexford Sinfonia, Wind Ensemble concert at The Presentation Centre, Enniscorthy, last Saturday night. A most delightful affair with Musical Directors Liam Daly for the Wind Ensemble and Heather B o x w e l l w i t h Va l d a , T h e Wexford Chamber Choir. The Wind Ensemble began proceedings with a marvellous 15th century English collection including The Earle of Oxford’s Marche, John Come Kiss Me

Now, The Mayden’s Song, Wolsey’s Wilde and The Bells. That was followed by the charming strains of Siyahamba, Fair Phyllis, Words, Only You and Durme sung by the Valda Chamber Choir. After the brief interval Valda were on stage again giving us beautiful renditions of well known classics including Tea For Two, Mari’s Wedding and The Long and Winding Road before the Wind Ensemble brought the most enjoyable evening to a close with Into The Light, Finnegan’s Wake

and a selection of popular pieces from `Chicago`. For €10 this was amazing value and amazing talent and it is doubly amazing that all these gifted musicians and fantastic singers are all volunteers who put in endless hours of practice to stage concerts such as this purely and simply for the sheer love of it. Wouldn’t all our lives lack something without them. A truly uplifting experience and once again our aesthetic Presentation Centre lent itself beautifully to the occasion. n

will be running in Rathnure soon! See pages 9 and 12

Congrats to Jarlath Bunclody landscape photographer Jarlath Judge has received international recognition for his images which have been displayed at salons across the world, including jury-selected exhibitions in Australia, Egypt, Singapore, Turkey, UK, Greece, Serbia, Austria and Slovakia. He has been awarded an “Artist” FIAP disctinction (Artiste Fédération Internationale de l'Art Photographique) at the Irish Photographic Federations National Championships. A member of Enniscorthy Camera Club, and currently its

Club Photographer of the Year, Jarlath is delighted with his achievement. “It’s fantastic to have your photographs judged in a worldwide arena and then to meet the international standards. For such a small country we (Irish photographers) do very well in world photography circles. I guess we capture the uniqueness and beauty of Ireland through photography and being it to a new audience”, he said. Some of his work will be on display at Enniscorthy Camera Club’s Annual Exhibition from June 20th at the Church Institute and at Bunclody Library later this year. n

The bill features Wexford artists Tony

Carty and Aileen Donohoe who join fresh from their run in the Wexford Light Opera production of Chess. Having recently changed ownership the new management team at The Bailey in Enniscorthy has wasted no time in making some innovative changes. It is now open for breakfast from 9am Monday to Saturday and food is served right throughout the day until

Two new food businesses opening up beside each other on Enniscorthy’s eastside is indeed a rare occurrence. We are reminded of an old Irish saying: An rud is annamh is iontach – that which is rare is wonderful. We wish every success to both Celestial Cake Creations and Mizzoni Pizzas – both located opposite Treacy’s Hotel. Celestial Cake Creations is the brainchild of Brunilda Tahiri – who trained as a cake crafter and has many years of experience in the trade. Brunilda is ably assisted by her sister Geralda – an expert cake baker and decorator, and by Rebecca Cullen whose helpful and friendly presence at the shop counter allows Brunilda and Geralda concentrate on baking and decorating in the extensive and modern kitchen which has been specially constructed to the rear of the shop.

9pm Mon-Thurs, 10pm FriSat and 9pm Sundays. Watch out for other developments including two major outdoor concerts in The Bailey carpark on Friday 25th and Saturday 26th June during the upcoming Strawberry, Culture & Food Fest. n

Food for thought! An alarming new report from the Wo r l d Health Organisation published at the beginning of May suggested nearly ALL Irish adults will be overweight by 2030!

If current trends continue, nine out of ten Irish men will be overweight in 15 years’ time – and 85 per cent of women. Food for thought! n

The search for Ireland’s favourite potato! GIY (Grow it Yourself) and Bord Bia are aiming to reconnect Irish people with their inner spudlove, encouraging Irish people to grow, cook and eat spuds. The spudlove initiative will target food growers and GIYers in communities all over Ireland, by encouraging them to take part in a local 'Spud Off’ – a spud growing competition which will find Ireland’s favourite spud. It will also appeal to nonfood growers encouraging them to show their love for spuds by cooking and eating them and sharing on social media. GROW, COOK, EAT Grow – could your homegrown spud be Ireland’s top potato? GIY is looking for Ireland’s tastiest tuber and wants you to organise or take part in a local Spud Off in your community during the summer months by growing your

own potatoes and entering them in a blind taste trial. Growers will be provided with all of the know how and tips and things to do each week from Ireland’s Mr Spud-tastic and curator of the Lisadell Potato Collection, Dermot Carey. The local winners will go forward to the national final at GIY’s GROW Fest in Waterford this September where a panel of expert Spud Masters will find Ireland’s 'Top Tuber'. Cook – the campaign will be sharing the nation’s favourite spud recipes, and lots of spud information including top health tips from the www.potato.ie website which hosts Bord Bia’s best and tastiest potato recipes. We want budding chefs to share their favourite potato recipes with us so we can get the best recipes and share them with other spudlovers. Eat – foodies will be encouraged to show their #spudlove by

spudlove posting pictures and video clips of their favourite spud dishes on social media. Each week we will pick our favourite potato pioneers and bestow on them the much-coveted title of “Spud Lover Of the Week”. Interested families, individuals, workplaces and groups can check out the ‘Spud Rules’ and register a ‘Spud Off’ at http://www.giyinternational.org/spudlove To launch the initiative GIY took to the streets to ask the Irish public… so check out: https://www.youtube.com/wa tch?v=xkY98a3r8VI n

Queen Margrethe II of Denmark celebrates her 75th birthday. Pic: Maria Nolan.

From time to time this roving writer will be out and about beyond town and county and last month was one of those times as I covered the 75th Birthday of her Majesty Queen Margrethe II of Denmark for the Slaney News… only joking of course! But thanks to Michael O’Leary and a great Ryanair offer of return flights from Dublin to Copenhagen for €82.51 for - can you believe it - 4 people I did happen to be in that city and when I heard it was the Queen’s 75th birthday I thought that I would go along and capture the occasion. Indeed, the flights were the only cheap thing about Wo n d e r f u l , Wo n d e r f u l Copenhagen. It is an extremely expensive city for food, drink, clothes and sightseeing. But there is lots to see and lots to do, so much so that you have to decide your priorities on a short stay. I had a couple of items on my wish list the main one being of course that fascinator from my childhood, that spinner of tales – Hans Christian Andersen who wove spellbinding fairytales like The Little Mermaid, The Snow Queen, The Tinderbox, The Ugly Duckling and many, many more. His tales were not so much about wicked witches and ugly stepmothers as much as human nature and weakness but they fascinated me as a child and I had to find my hero and the places he lived in the Nyhavn District of Copenhagen. The Little Mermaid is of course a must for all visiting this windy city and the Little Mermaid is just that – a small statue on a small rock staring at the shore searching for the man she loves who has gone and married another – ah a familiar tale! And this poor

Little Mermaid has suffered almost as much as her fairytale counterpart having been decapitated twice in recent times by vandals. One has to visit the Tivoli Gardens which they say was Walt Disney’s inspiration for Disneyland and they certainly are magical particularly each evening when there is an Illumination Display. Copenhagen, or as Danny Kaye once called her, ‘salty old Queen of the Sea’, is awash with beautiful buildings, palaces and museums but the entrance fees are expensive – we visited its famous aquarium The Blue Planet which cost us €23 each or 160 Danish Krone. Of course you must take the train across the Oresund Bridge which will bring you to Malmo in Sweden in less than half an hour and costs €20 return but Malmo is so worth it. A big, picturesque, spacious city with wide streets opening into quaint squares and everywhere pristine clean. Wallmans in the centre of Copenhagen is like a giant Spiegeltent and of an evening you can enjoy a 4-course meal whilst being entertained by some of the most unusual and extraordinary circus-type acts in Europe along with musical shows. This will set you back approximately €90 each but then it is an experience and you may only be there once! Copenhagen has one of the longest shopping streets in Europe, called Stroget, boasting all of the top fashion houses but again I would have to say that we found nothing cheap about any of its shops. But you gotta window shop don’t you? The people of Denmark love their Monarch and lined the streets of Copenhagen on Thursday 16th April as she made her way in a horse-drawn carriage among them waving

and smiling as they cheered and waved their little paper Danish flags with gusto and pride. Indeed, I waved one myself in her direction as she passed… when in Rome and all that… and besides they were given out freely to everyone in the crowd. The celebrations had begun the evening before at her residence, the Amalienborg Palace, where looking elegant and regale in red she hosted a banquet in the Grand Hall for royal relatives and dignitaries from across Europe. Early the following morning she waved from her bedroom window to a small group of family and friends who wished her Happy Birthday and gave the 9 Hoorahs as is traditional in Denmark before singing the Danish National Anthem. From there it was on to C i t y H a l l S q u a re – Radhuspladsen – in her carriage heralded by her Royal Guard on horseback for a reception at City Hall incorporating song, dance and mime before she greeted her loyal subjects who had gathered in their hundreds underneath the ornate balcony for the occasion and the chance to wish their Queen well. I was surprised to get right up to the barrier and was directly in front of the balcony when she appeared looking genuinely surprised to see so many gathered in her honour. This time she was dressed in a smart turquoise suit with matching hat which almost took off in the gusts of wind that swirled around City Hall Square. Once again the Lord Mayor led the crowds in the 9 Hoorahs before she gracefully took her leave. A charming, attractive, fashionable, classy and most elegant lady just like the city in which she resides. – Maria Nolan

The team at Waterford Wexford Training Services has delivered the first ever internationally recognised Red Seal Qualification course for Welding in Ireland through a partnership with the International Brotherhood of Boilermakers and the Canadian Apprenticeship and Industry Training Alberta. The Red Seal programme is the Canadian standard of excellence for skilled trades; it is evidence that a tradesperson has met the highest standard required in order to do his or her job. It sets common standards

to assess the skills of tradespersons across Canada and the programme was initially created following the first ever International Convention on Apprenticeship in Trades and Industries, which was held in 1952. A class group, which consisted of tradespersons from all across Ireland, recently qualified from the programme, which was run at the Waterford Training Centre. This is the first time that the Red Seal Training programme has been run outside of Canada. The qualification enables its participants to finesse their trade and

gain an internationally recognised qualification enabling them to travel and work in their trade, opening doors to many job opportunities. WWETB developed a curriculum for the course in conjunction with the Alberta Apprenticeship and Training Industry in Canada and the curriculum was led by instructor Michael Murphy who is also Red Seal qualified. The course delivery was so successful the course is now under further development. For further details see wwetbtraining.ie n

A night at the dogs! PEt APProvED

VET DIARY FOR JUNE with the Moyne Veterinary Clinic

This month, Joe Kavanagh, looks at spaying and neutering. Spaying and neutering are considered the routine operations that a small animal surgeon carries out each week.

Enniscorthy Dog Track Thursday 7th May. Above: Tim Looby, Eugene Dempsey and Tommy Woods. Left: Joe Devlin and Danny Kenny with the "Shanks Whelan owned dog Piercestown Club".

The fact that it is a routine operation does not diminish the fact that it is a full blown operation, full general anaesthetic and is not a simple procedure. Here at the Moyne Veterinary Clinic we aim to keep high standards using the safest in the pre-medication sedations, and the same gaseous anaesthetics that are used in the top hospitals in the country. Each animal receives pain relief before/during the operation and this can be topped up if necessary depending on the recovery of the patient.

For a great night out go…

Each animal is monitored during recovery too and we keep them hospitalised until they have recovered fully from the anaesthetic. Like people, animals are all different and some react differently after the operation. Some may gain weight post operatively over the months and years so if there is a possibility of this we'll advise on a specific change in their diet to prevent the onset of excess weight gain, obesity and all the related problems it can bring.

DATE FoR YouR DIARY: Enniscorthy Credit union Night at the Dogs on Saturday 27th June in conjunction with the Enniscorthy Strawberry, Culture & Food Fest.

Some animals can resent the fact that their 'crown jewels' have been docked and we very often have the situation where we'll use alternative remedies that help alleviate and ameleriate the situation, bringing them back to their happy go lucky selves. We aim to give the best service we can and follow up each case making sure they are 100% before, during and after their procedure.

View from the Hill referendum result The result of the marriage equality referendum I suppose wasn’t a great surprise when you consider that every political party in the state fully supported the adoption of the proposal. On top of that almost all media outlets were of the same view and this obviously had an effect on the result. Despite that, 38% of voters opposed the proposition, many more than relatively recent polls had suggested, and this is a sizeable proportion of the population. It must also be noted that many of those who voted on the Yes side were people who were one-issue voters who in 60,000 cases only

registered to vote at virtually the last minute. Therefore Fine Gael and Fianna Fail in particular must be wondering how many of their traditional supporters are in that 38%. Those voters, most of whom vote in every election, might now be looking at alternatives coming up to the next general election. The future will be interesting. However the people have spoken and their wishes must now be complied with. The government must now legislate to comply with the outcome of the referendum. The presidential age referendum was defeated raising the question of what we consider

equality. Why isn’t a 21 year old adult equal to a 35 year old adult. I know some 21 year olds, and younger, who would buy and sell most 35 year olds. But that’s the way it is. As with the other question the people have spoken. The decision to allow thousands of people into the yard of Dublin Castle for the result of the referendum count sets a dangerous precedent. On this occasion no problems arose but what’s going to happen if opposing groups gather during a closely run contentious issue. Don’t know about anybody else but I wouldn’t like to be there. noel dillon County Wexford lost a true friend this week with the death of Noel Dillon, former County Manager. Noel served the people of Wexford as their leading executive from the middle of 1976 to 1993 when he went on to become manager of his native Cork. Wexford was a vastly different place to what it is today when this 39-year-old breezed into the county as Wexford’s third County Manager. He succeeded the late Tom Broe who in turn had replaced the legendary T.D. Sinnott. Noel had big shoes to fill and big challenges to meet and a formida-

ble council to face. It must have been daunting for a new, young manager facing an Enniscorthy District Committee made up of such veterans as Sean Browne T.D., Andy Doyle, Johnnie Quirke, Michael Sinnott and J.J. Bowe. All now like Noel gone to their eternal reward. But face them he did and within a very short period of time these shrewd public representatives realised that they had a real catch on their line. Noel proved that he was far seeing, had great ambitions for Wexford and most importantly of all had a great belief in real public service. He was also blessed with the other senior executives in the council at that time such as Co. Secretary, Bill Creedon, who had been here since 1969 (and is still hale and hearty) and that old veteran Co. Engineer, the late Gerry Forde, who had been with the local authorities from 1949. Between them they set ambitious targets for projects and achieved a tremendous amount in terms of bridge building, water supply, roads network, house building, etc. It should also be noted that in Noel’s time we didn’t have all these layers of directors of services and that the county manager was very accessible to the public at large and in

fact attended all meetings of the urban authorities throughout the county as well as the Co. Council meetings. This meant that Noel was familiar with every detail of the responsibilities of all the councils in the county and indeed the problems. He was certainly all that was best in public service and those in those services today would do well to have a look at his record and his ethos. May he rest in peace in his native Cork. Bus stop It always riles me to see how certain motorists continue to park and block up the bus stop at Templeshannon Quay. Is it that they cannot read what’s written on the road or maybe just don’t give a damn. Their irresponsibility is very unfair to bus passengers and bus drivers who are trying to drop off and pick up passengers at this point. The fact that busses are forced to park in the middle of the road causes traffic chaos and disrupts other travellers’ journeys. Enniscorthy’s Templeshannon Quay is actually a hub for many bus services and is of great convenience to the people of the town and surrounding areas. The least these motorists could do is show a little respect for that.

How not to Cross tHe road I was driving past St. Aidan’s school the other day at 2pm and couldn’t but help notice the amount of parking on double yellow lines in the area. School for some of the younger ones seemed to be over at that point and I was extremely careful about my driving. I had progressed through the pedestrian crossing which had given me the green light. Imagine my horror as I moved a few metres down the road towards Summerhill direction when people with tiny tots by the hand started to emerge from between these illegally parked cars crossing the road directly in front of me. I couldn’t believe what I was seeing. Rather than walk a few metres to the crossing these people were risking the lives of the children as well as showing such bad example regarding rules of the road. How can you teach a child to obey the basic do’s and dont’s of crossing the road while showing such a disregard for the same rules yourself. The mind boggles. n We are often asked: Who is the “View from the Hill” columnist? All we can say is that the author’s surname is NOT Doyle!

According to Cllr Ó Súilleabháin: “The council have ambitious plans to make G o r e y To w n P a r k a n d Showgrounds a better amenity for the people of north Wexford. an estate car is a great option if you need more space than what a hatchback or saloon can offer, but you really don’t want to go down the route of the suV or the crossover. what’s more, you might actually prefer the way an estate car looks; modern estate cars are largely elegant, stylish machines. And that’s a point well illustrated by the new Ford Mondeo estate, or “Wagon” as Ford refer to it. The classy looks of the new Mondeo Wagon are a rival for an estate from any premium German car brand. The cabin has gone upmarket too with a new centre console design and a visible improvement in the quality of materials. There are two trim levels for the Mondeo on the Irish market, Zetec and Titanium, and standard equipment is good. On the outside there are alloy wheels, fog lamps and silver roof rails on all estate models, which look really well. Inside all cars have dual zone climate control, four electric windows and cruise control. The Titanium model has a little more tech on board, with a digital element to the instrument dials, a lane departure warning system, traffic sign recognition and Sync 2, Ford’s updated infotainment system that comes with an 8” colour touchscreen. This is an estate car, so we need to talk about the interior space. Occupants of the Mondeo are well accommodated for and rear seat pas-

sengers can really stretch their legs out. The higher roofline above the rear doors in the Wagon means that there is more headroom for rear passengers than in the Mondeo hatchback. The boot is 500 litres but surprisingly enough the hatchback actually has 41 litres more! But the space is so much more practical in the estate. It’s got more width and depth so it’s really easy to load, and the loading sill is much lower. The estate version trumps the hatchback in terms of capacity when you let the rear seats down – 1605 litres vs 1437 litres. T h e M o n d e o Wa g o n weighs over a tonne and half but despite its size it feels much more agile on the road than its weight and dimensions would suggest. It’s not a labour to drive it and it performs very well on the road. The steering is precise with

plenty of grip in those tyres and a nice, connected to the road feel. There are three engine choices for the new Mondeo – a 1.6 litre diesel with 113 bhp, a 1.5 litre EcoBoost petrol with 158 bhp, and a 2.0 litre diesel with 148 bhp. There’s an option of an automatic gearbox with the 2.0 litre diesel and that’s the car I was driving. Ford’s Powershift automatic transmission is a dual clutch system, so essentially there are two clutches: one looks after even gears, and the other looks after the odd gears. This makes the gear changes that bit quicker and smoother. An automatic gearbox is handy but bear in mind that it’s more expensive to buy than the manual version, and the CO2 e m i s s i o n s a n d m p g a re impacted. With the automatic gearbox, the 2.0 litre diesel will

For any time when people's expectations of me as a priest may not have been realised, I ask forgiveness for that too. I thank you all for the last 27 years here in Wexford which I truly loved and I have no doubt that I will look back on these years and think very fondly of you and hope that you will think fondly of me.

Wells House under attack wonderful wells House was the scene of several skirmishes on the may Bank Holiday weekend as redcoats and rebels from the enniscorthy Historic & re-enactment group battled it out on the lawn to the delight of the large gathering of bank holiday visitors. Adult and child alike were treated to rifle shot and canon blast and hand to hand combat as Pikemen and Recoats reenacted scenes from 1798. All spectators were invited to dress up in costumes provided and have their photographs taken and experience a rebel camp complete with pheasants and rabbits ready for the pot. Musket, rifles, swords, pike and canon were on site to be ex amined first hand and described by experts in the field – Rory O’Connor of Enniscorthy Castle and 1798 Centre, and Ray Murphy Chairman of the Enniscorthy Historic & Re-enactment Society. Owner of Wells House, Sabine Rossler, said that she was delighted with the interest

shown by the visitors in the occasion which she very much hoped would become a regular feature on their annual programme of events. ‘It was colourful, interactive and fun’ she said ‘and with the fantastic backdrop of Wells House it resembled a scene from a movie bringing history to life for all those present.` She thanked the re-enactors for their commitment and attention to detail saying that it was excellent to have such a professional and dedicated group within our own county. ‘A definite return visit pencilled in for the future.’

Bunclody VTOSphotography exhibition 2015 End of Year Year

Art Exhibition 29 May May 2015 - 1 June 2015 Opening Frida Fridayy 29 Ma Mayy at 7pm. 30 Ma Mayy - 1 June, 10am - 4pm.

Gorey School of Art, Mary Ward Ward Lane, Road,!! St. Michaels Road, Gorey, Co. Wexford. Wexford.

the students of Bunclody Vtos recently held their annual photography exhibition at the Bunclody library. the exhibition was the culmination of a year’s work as part of their photography module at the Bunclody Vtos centre on ryland road. M a r y Wa l s h , o f t h e Wa t e r f o rd a n d We x f o rd Education and Training Board, had the honour of launching the exhibition and congratulated the students on their expertise and the quality of the work on display. Cllr. Barbara-Anne Murphy thanked the staff of the Bunclody Library for holding the exhibition and spoke of the great services available at the library. As part of their class the students learn the workings of their cameras, from there they look at how to compose a photo, with tips and ideas on how to improve. They also

edit their photos and discover what they can do with the computer to enhance their images. To get inspiration, they research the masters of visual communication, from Robert Capa to Bresson and Dali to Banksy. In this digital age, with social networking and advertising, we are bombarded with photos and images. The skills and ideas required to work in these fields are valued, but in our private lives the ability to capture a moment in time with confidence can be priceless. The aim and goal of the class is to record our lives and the things we like to see – and to look back upon the pictures in the future and say, I took that. If would like to learn more, get in touch with Bunclody VTOS at The Adult Learning Centre, Ryland Road, Bunclody. Tel: 053-93 77326. n
