comment Two important positions in Enniscorthy have been filled in recent days – Cllr Paddy Kavanagh is the new Chairperson of Enniscorthy Municipal District and John Burke-O’Leary is the new Chairperson of Enniscorthy Chamber. Both men are highly experienced in their own spheres and from our dealings with them over the years we know that both are highly motivated by the desire to see the Enniscorthy area grow and prosper over the term of their appointments and into the future. We wish them both well for the year ahead. – Frank Corcoran

The amount raised in 2015 by the Hope & Dream Run is an incredible €143,030 bringing the 4 year total since this event started to a staggering €532,246. Well done to Michael Jordan and this year’s team of 200 volunteers. At the cheque presentation ceremony earlier this month Michael announced that next year's event will be on Sunday 10th April and with an increase in registration in 2015 of 9% they are hoping for a huge success again in 2016 when the Hope Cancer Support Centre will be sharing the proceeds with Wexford Hospice Homecare. Other recent Hope related

events included a very successful raffle at a recent “Big Day Out” in Joyces of Wexford at their Clonard Retail Park premises. Over €570 was raised for the Hope Centre. Many thanks to Derek Joyce and his team for supporting the Hope Centre on the day. The Summer Solstice Walk and Ceremony of Light and Healing on Curracloe beach on 21st June was another huge success with hundreds of people taking part. Finally, don’t forget the Garden Tea Party Open Day in the Hope Centre, 22 Weafer Street, on this Sunday 28th June 1-4pm – see elsewhere on this page. n

Tech Tip by Sam power

GeT iT Fixed enniScorThy

easy tips to make batteries Last Longer part 1 Here are a few things you can do to make your li-ion batteries last longer, whether they be used in a tablet, smartphone or laptop, with part 2 next month. Tip 1: Use it or lose it, it is important to remember that batteries degrade not only during use, but also when sitting idly on a shelf. This is one reason why most manufacturers specify not only a cycle life but also a calendar life for their batteries. So a good approach to take is to treat batteries and battery-powered devices like you do dairy products. Buy the freshest one whenever given the choice. A slightly older product is fine, particularly if you’re offered an outstanding discount, but expect it to expire sooner. Tip 2: Keeping cool, in terms of operating environment, the most important influence on battery life is temperature. Li-ion batteries are typically happiest at around room temperature of 20 to 25°C. In warmer temperatures, a protective layer inside the batteries breaks and needs to be reconstituted, which sucks up some of the energy

capacity the battery has to offer. And in colder temperatures the chemical reactions inside the battery slow down. When coupled with significant power draw, this causes a problem similar to roadworks during rush hour traffic: too many cars trying to get through too few roads. On the whole, though, cold is usually less harmful than heat. If you have the choice between placing your phone

in the sun or the shade, the latter is probably preferable. As ever if you have queries about this article or you’d like me to talk about a tech issue that interests or concerns you in a future article, then pop me an email at sam@getitfixed.ie, or you can phone the shop on 053 9238544. n

Binmen and volunteers Local infrastructure boost can’t keep pace! lush spring greenery along country road verges may hide it but there is no doubt that litter is on the rise. From car windows, white vans, overflowing bins and from the hands and the pockets of pedestrians it is defiling and degrading the Irish countryside and our towns. Illegal dumping and fly-tipping is a major problem for all local authorities. At a time when councils face difficult choices about services in the light of reducing budgets they are having to spend thousands of euro each year tackling litter and fly-tipping. Some believe that there is a lack of vigour in dealing with offenders. There is a strong case for heavier fines and litter louts should be named and shamed. Litter is blight in its most blatant form. Enniscorthy Tidy

TAkiNg PRide iN eNNiSCORThY eNNiSCORThY TidY TOWN ASSOCiATiON The 2015 programme of litter picking is in full swing. During the summer months the Volunteers meet every Sunday morning at 9am near the Rafter Bridge (New Bridge) to pick litter between the bridges and along the Promenade and other areas of the town. New Volunteers always welcome. If interested please contact Billy Murphy: 087-8298 569, or Seán Doyle e-mail: seanogodubhghaill@gmail.com n Town Association and its members are very conscious of the seriousness of the difficulties we are all facing in trying to cope with the terrible scourge of a minority of people defacing our beautiful country. We believe that central government should take their responsibilities in dealing with the scandal more seriously. At the whim of everyone sniffing a rumour they set up a commission of enquiry.

The government should as a matter of urgency appoint a group of experts and people working at the coalface to come up with suggested solutions within six months to tackle one of our dirtiest scandals – littering, illegal dumping and flytipping. – Seán Doyle Secretary/Treasurer. Enniscorthy Tidy Town Association. n

BROADBAnD ExPAnSIOn Local Fine Gael Minister Paul Kehoe has welcomed Eircom’s recent announcement that they are to significantly expand access to high speed fibre broadband in rural Ireland benefiting a number of areas in Wexford – Adamstown, Bree, Ballygarret, Ballynabola, Clonroche, Inch, Monamolin and Taghmon. Minister Kehoe stated, “The National Broadband Plan is a partnership between the commercial sector and the State to deliver high speed broadband to every home, school and business in Ireland. “Making the economic recovery a reality for people in all parts of the country, including here in Wexford, is a key objective for Government… Initial commercial plans to pro-

vide high-speed access to one million homes by 2015 have now expanded into a commitment to provide access to 1.6 million homes by the end of 2016, and 1.9 million homes by 2020. “The Minister for Communications, Alex White is expected to publish the State intervention strategy in July with a view to moving to formal procurement by the end of this year. Roll-out will commence in 2016.”

€170,000 FOR WExFORD HARBOuRS “Harbours throughout Wexford are to receive just under €170,000 in funding as part of a national programme for the repair and development of piers and harbours”, says Fine Gael Minister Paul Kehoe.

Laura Mullett is a top Irish Fashion Stylist and Journalist who styles Ireland’s hottest stars for TV and magazine spreads. The Enniscorthy native also works as a red carpet radio reporter for RTE, as a Personal Shopper and showcases all the latest beauty and fashion trends on her blog ‘Lipstick Gossip’. Laura will be giving her fashion tips monthly in the ‘Slaney News’. A boutique that I have always loved in Enniscorthy is Cloze and Shooz. I remember it always being the place to find a glamorous dress or a pair of heels for a special occasion. I attended the launch party for the Dubai Duty Free Derby in Dublin last week with two of my friends and wore a ‘Darling’ label dress I picked up in Cloze & Shooz two years ago. It is such a distinctive dress and I love wearing it! The neutral colour and embellishment below the collar was a real draw for me.

Another dress brand stocked in Enniscorthy’s Cloze & Shooz boutique is the versatile ‘Diva Catwalk’. The ‘Serenity’ dress is in print and fitted with flattering panelling. It has a chic shape that works as a dress for a Christening or wedding or as a raceday dress for ‘Ladies Day’ when paired with a fascinator. It is important when investing in a dress that it ticks several boxes so you can get real mileage out of it.

Nowadays the stylish boutique has upped its game in the style stakes by stocking Freddy Jeans. Freddy’s are the go to denims for a lot of ladies who want a fitted look but also sculpting. They come in a varied range of colours from dark denim to khaki tones. I particularly love the red pair for Summer with a floaty white shirt teamed with t-bar gladiator sandals.

French Ambassador in town Mythen supports

mortgage holders

Mr Jean Pierre Thebault, French Ambassador to Ireland (third from left front row) with local politicians, clergy and Council officials.

Mr Jean Pierre Thebault, French Ambassador to Ireland, visited The Presentation Centre on Thursday, 28th May 2015, for the presentation of a Book of Condolences with the people of France and with the victims of the attack on Charlie Hebdo and of the subsequent attacks. Cllr Barbara-Anne Murphy spoke eloquently on behalf of all present when she addressed the Ambassador: “It is an hono u r t o h a v e y o u h e re i n Enniscorthy with us Ambassador as we share our sense of sadness, grief and outrage in solidarity with the French people following the deaths of 16 people at the Charlie Hebdo magazine and in the kosher supermarket in Paris in early January. We share your people’s horror at these attacks and the fear that they generated not

only in Paris and France but right across the world. Our countries are historically connected by our commitment to ensuring liberty, equality and fraternity for our citizens. These attacks were not just an attack on the people of Paris and of France but on all right-thinking people throughout the world.” Cllr Murphy mentioned the pupils from FCJ Secondary School in Bunclody as their school has strong historic links with France as the founder of the Faithful Companions of Jesus order was a Frenchwoman, Marie Madeline d’Houët. “Enniscorthy has long links with your country. This year we celebrate the 40th anniversary of our twinning with the town of Gimont. Over those 40 years there have been many reciprocal visits between the

two towns. The people of Gimont and Enniscorthy have enjoyed cultural exchanges, sporting exchanges, student exchanges and work experience, learning more about day to day life in each other’s town.” The Stage 1 start of the Tour de France here in Enniscorthy in 1998 was also recalled as was one of our most famous Enniscorthy natives – the furniture designer and architect, Eileen Gray who was born at Brownswood, Enniscorthy, in 1878. Cllr Murphy pointed out that, “Eileen Gray spent much of her life in France and indeed her home was E-1027, the house she designed herself in the South of France which has been designated a French National Cultural Monument by the French government. We would like to take you to visit our

Mental health issues highlighted by Wallace Minister Kathleen lynch has admitted she does not know what happened to a proposal for an acute mental health ward for Wexford General Hospital while responding to claims from Independent Deputy Mick Wallace that people in distress in Wexford had committed suicide because they were not admitted to hospital. Wallace raised issues about the problems surrounding acute mental health facilities in Wexford in the Dail earlier this month, saying it made no sense that people in crisis in Wexford had to pass through two A&Es before being assessed. “Back in 2009, Susan Lynch, the HSE manager of mental health and elderly services, said that an acute ward in Wexford General Hospital was more than a proposal, that it was in the HSE's south capital plan, but it never happened. It fell off the lorry. Why did it not happen?,” he asked. In response Minister Lynch said she didn’t know what happened the proposal and that she was “responsible for many

Mick Wallace, TD.

things but I am not responsible for what happened back in 2009.” Deputy Wallace outlined how there were only day hospital services in Wexford and that they closed after 5pm. “To gain access to those services people need a referral letter from their GP. What is a family supposed to do if a family member is in crisis and suicidal? The person has to go to an A&E department and sit in a corridor or on a trolley waiting to be assessed. As there is no consultant psychiatrist in Wexford General Hospital, the psychiatric liaison nurse will have to ring Waterford hospital to consult

a psychiatrist there. If it is decided that the person in crisis needs to go to an acute bed in Waterford, they are sent off and will have to go through the A&E department in that hospital also. Therefore, a Wexford patient will have to go through two A&E departments. It has happened in the past that people sent to Waterford hospital from Wexford General Hospital were sent home, having travelled all the way there while in acute distress.” Wallace also dismissed suggestions by Minister Lynch that Wexford and Waterford were well served by the provision of mental health services. “According to the HSE's mental health division plan for 2015, spending per capita in the mental health area in the region is €148. That compares to €223 in Carlow-Kilkenny, €198 in south Tipperary and €206 in Mayo. The average number of acute beds per thousand of population across the country is 0.21 and it is 0.16 in Waterford-Wexford,” Deputy Wallace said. n

Eileen Gray exhibition in Enniscorthy Castle, and Brownswood, Eileen Gray’s birthplace this afternoon if you can spare the time.” (And indeed the ambassador did visit Brownswood later that day). The ambassador attended the Battle of Vinegar Hill Reenactment last year and Cllr Murphy extended an invitation to him and his family to come again this August. “Despite the sad reasons for your visit to Enniscorthy today Ambassador Thebault, I do hope you enjoy your time with us. And please remember that we are united with the people of France in their sorrow and grief at the deaths, injuries and fear caused by the terror attacks in Paris earlier this year. “Je suis Charlie. local Sinn Féin Councillor, Johnny Mythen, felt privileged to travel to the Dáil earlier this month with some very courageous people – ordinary citizens and members of IBRC mortgage holders who are trying their utmost to protect and defend 18,000 of their fellow mortgagees from Vulture funds. Cllr Mythen says that, “Irish banks and financial institutions have across this state sold off thousands of homes to foreign and ruthless vulture funds, leaving the mortgagees without any legal protection or consumer rights.” The bill which they witnessed being passed through the first stages of the Dáil was in great part due to the enormous pressure and thousands of emails and correspondence from the likes of the IBRC mortgage holders and others. According to Cllr Mythen, “An intervention to protect their citizens had to be painstakingly dragged inch by inch out of the Irish government by the IBRC mortgage holders themselves.” The Consumer Protection Bill 2015 (Regulation of Credit Servicing Firms) was passed through the first stages of the Oireachtas. But according to Cllr Mythen, “This Bill does give

Irish mortgage holders under the vulture regime some protection, but falls way short of regulating the actual owners of the purchased loans. “Worryingly not one of the amendments by Sinn Fein or the opposition was taken on board or allowed to pass. Even though they were of practical merit and articulately put forward. Some of these amendments referred to interest rates, whether the vulture funds could increase them at will thus forcing the sale of family homes, other amendments called on the right of the mortgagee to be given the information on how much their mortgage loans were discounted and sold to the vulture funds.” The kernel of the matter, Cllr Mythen believes, is the actual owners of the loans, mostly vulture funds, are not comprehensively regulated by this bill, as it covers the agent server only. Cllr Mythen is full of admiration for the brave IBRC mortgage holders who “deserve respect and credit for the way they have conducted this fight which at times has been harrowing, personal and frustrating… this is only the beginning of change brought about by citizens empowering themselves.” n

POST OFFICE COnSulTATIOn Fianna Fáil TD for Wexford John Browne has called on the public to engage in a new public consultation process aimed at identifying the best way forward for developing the Post Office network. This follows the publication of an Interim Report by the Post Office network Business Development Group. The report, chaired by Bobby Kerr, has resulted in the establishment of a six week public consultation process. “Some aspects of the report are encouraging and offer hope for communities across Ireland who rely on post offices to support community life. The report outl i n e s t h a t t h e re i s a n opportunity for post offices to develop the services that they offer. However this can only occur if the Government decides to invest in our post offices. Unfortunately, to date, the Government has been eroding services at our post offices.” Consultation forms are available on the Dept of Communications, Energy and Natural Resources website. n

“High and dry” The government’s hands-off approach to mortgage arrears is leaving families high and dry according to local Fianna Fáil TD, John Browne, who has accused the government of failing struggling homeowners in the South East by refusing to take any concrete action to address the issue of mortgage arrears. Deputy Browne says that over the past 12 months, the number of people who are more than two years behind in their payments has risen by almost 38,000. “This government has done nothing more than talk about the escalating mortgage arrears crisis. In spite of this, figures from the CSO reveal that

more and more families are falling deeper into difficulty. The much heralded insolvency legislation has not delivered any tangible benefits – so far only 328 cases have been concluded by the end of March this year, and the Government has refused to publish data on how many of these relate to family homes. “Fianna Fáil has brought forward a suite of measures over the past four years aimed at easing the burden on overstretched families. As far back as 2011, I introduced the Family Home Bill, which would have prohibited the repossession of family homes. All of these were rejected by the government.” n

Housing crisis worsening The outgoing Chair of Wexford County Council, Cllr. Malcolm Byrne, has warned that the housing crisis in Co. Wexford is worsening, especially in north Wexford, particularly due to the lack of availability of affordable rental accommodation. Malcolm pointed out that there are an estimated 3,176 people currently on the Co. Wexford housing list and that this number is continuing to increase. He said, "I have never received as many queries about housing and accommodation as a public representative as I am currently receiving. I have a new case almost every day.

Cllr Malcolm Byrne

Some of the stories are heartbreaking. Those 3,176 people on the list also in many cases have children and families with them. The lack of affordable rental accommodation in some areas, especially in the North of

the County is adding to the pressure." Malcolm pointed out that some social housing is being built in the County this year but more radical measures are needed. He highlighted that the maximum allowable rent supplement in Co. Wexford of about €500 was inadequate to meet rents in the County now. He added, "I know that there have been some measures announced by Government and the County Council will respond as effectively as possible but we need to incentivise the building of affordable housing for purchase or rent or to be used by the local authority." n

JIMMY MURPHY CONTINUES HIS SERIES ON ICONIC 1970s BRITISH ROCK BANDS… Jimmy Murphy

Black Sabbath!

Black Sabbath are an English rock band, formed in Birmingham in 1968, by guitarist and main song writer Tony Iommi, bassist and main lyricist Geezer Butler, singer Ozzy Osbourne, and drummer Bill Ward. The band have since experienced multiple line-up changes, with Iommi being the only constant presence in the band through the years. Originally formed in 1968 as a blues rock band, the group soon adopted the Black Sabbath moniker and began incorporating occult themes, with horror inspired lyrics and tuned down guitars. Despite an association with these two themes, Black Sabbath also composed songs dealing with social instability, political corruption, dangers of drug abuse and apocalyptic prophecies of the horrors of war. Following the break-up of their previous band Mythology in 1968, guitarist Tony Iommi and drummer Bill Ward sought to form a heavy blues rock band in Aston, Birmingham. They enlisted bassist Geezer Butler and vocalist Ozzy Osbourne, who had played together in a band called Rare Breed. Osbourne placed an advertisement in a local music shop; “Ozzy Zig Needs Gig-has

own PA”. The new group was initially named the Polka Tulk Blues Band, the name taken either from a brand of talcum powder or an Indian/Pakistani clothing shop. The Polka Tulk Blues Band featured slide guitarist Jimmy Phillips, a childhood friend of Osbourne’s, and saxophonist Alan Clarke. After shortening the name to Polka Tulk, the band again changed their name to Earth and continued as a four piece without Phillips and Clarke. While the band was performing under the Earth title, they recorded several demos written by Norman Haines such as The Rebel, Song For Jim, and When I Came Down. The demo titled Song For Jim was in reference to Jim Simpson. Jim was manager for the bands Bakerloo Blues Line and Tea and Symphony. Simpson was also a trumpet player for the group Locomotive. Simpson had opened a new pub named Henry Blues House and offered to let Earth play some gigs in his club. The audience was positive and Simpson agreed to manage Earth. In December 1968, Iommi abrubtly left Earth to join Jethro Tull. Although his stint with the band would be short lived, Iommi made an appearance with Jethro Tull on The Rolling

Stones Rock and Roll Circus TV Show. Unsatisfied with the direction of Jethro Tull he returned to Earth in 1969. “It just wasn’t right so I left”, Iommi said. When playing shows in England in 1969 the band discovered they were being mistaken for another English group named Earth. They decided to change their name again. A cinema across the street from the band’s rehearsal room was showing the 1963 horror film Black Sabbath starring Boris Karloff. Butler noted that a lot of people were lining up to spend so much money to see scary films. Following that, Osbourne and Butler wrote the lyrics for a song called Black Sabbath, which was inspired by the work of horror and adventure story writer Dennis Wheatley. Making use of the musical triton, also known as the Devils Interval, the songs ominous sound and dark lyrics pushed the band in a darker direction, a stark contrast to the popular music of the late 60s, which was dominated by flower power, folk music, and hippie culture. Judas Priest frontman Rob Halford has called the track, “probably the most evil song ever written”. Inspired by the new sound, the band changed their name

to Black Sabbath in August 1969 and made the decision to focus on writing similar material. The band’s first show as Black Sabbath took place on the 30th August 1969 in Workington. They were signed to Phillips Records in November 1969, and released their first single, Evil Woman. Later releases were handled by Phillips newly formed progressive rock label, Vertigo Records. The band’s first major exposure came when they appeared on John Peel’s Top Gear radio show in 1969, performing Black Sabbath, NIB, Behind the Wall of Sleep, and Sleeping Village to a national audience in Great Britain shortly before recording of their first album commenced. Black Sabbath was released on 13th February 1970 and reached number 8 in the UK Album charts. Following its US and Canadian release in May 1970 by Warner Bros Records, the album reached number 23 on the Billboard 200, where it remained for over a year. The album was a commercial success but was widely panned by some critics. Lester Bangs dismissed it in a Rolling Stone review as “discordant jams with bass and guitar reeling like velocitised speedf-

reaks”. It sold in substantial numbers despite being panned, giving the band their first mainstream exposure. It has since been certified platinum in both US by the RIA of America and in the UK by BPI. To capitalise on their chart success in the US, the band returned to the studio in June 1970, just four months after the album was released. The new album was initially set to be named War Pigs which was critical of the Vi e t n a m w a r. H o w e v e r, Warner changed the title of the album to Paranoid. The a l b u m ’ s l e a d - o ff s i n g l e , Paranoid, was written in the studio at the last minute. The single was released in September 1970 and reached number 4 in the UK charts, remaining Black Sabbath’s only top ten hit. The album followed in the UK in October 1970, pushed by the success of the Paranoid single, it hit number one in the charts. The US release was held off until January 1971, as the Black Sabbath album was still on the charts at the time of Paranoid’s UK release. The band subsequently toured America for the first time and

their first US show was at a club called Unganos at 210 West 70th Street in New York City. The album reached No.12 in the US in March 1971, and would go on to sell four million copies in the US, with little or no radio play. Like Black Sabbath the album was panned by rock critics of the era, but modern day reviewers such as AllMusic’s Steve Huey cite Paranoid as “one of the greatest and most influential heavy metal albums of all time which defined the sound and style of heavy metal more than any other record in rock history.” The album was ranked at No.131 on Rolling Stone Magazine’s list of Top 500 Greatest Albums of all Time. Paranoid’s chart success allowed the band to tour the US for the first time in October 1970, which spawned the release of the album’s second single Iron Man. Although the single failed to reach the top 40 Iron Man remains one of Black Sabbath’s most popular songs, as well as the band’s highest charting US single until 1998’s Psycho Man. Part 2 of Black Sabbath’s story will be in next month’s issue. Don’t miss out! n

“The Plough and the Stars” shine bright

As Enniscorthy prepares to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the 1916 Rising next year, it was fitting that Enniscorthy Drama Group should stage a wonderful production of Sean O’Casey’s ‘The Plough and the Stars’ – the first time this iconic play has ever been staged by an

Enniscorthy group. Enniscorthy Municipal Council’s sponsorship of the gala opening night’s performance was in recognition of the drama group’s contribution to culture and the arts at a local level since its inception in 2013. Set in Dublin’s notorious tenements of the period, the

overall theme is one of bleak hopelessness in the face of violence in the Ireland of 1916 but with elements of comedy and farce also. Expertly directed by Jimmy Kavanagh from Ferns, ‘The Plough and the Stars’ was the group’s most ambitious production to date and one which

Opening night of The Plough and the Stars, 18th June: L-R: Bob Breakwell, Cllr James Browne, John Burke-O’Leary and Julie Heslin.

exceeded all the expectations of the sell-out audiences during its four-night run. All the lead roles were beautifully played by Fintan Kelly (Jack Clitheroe), Annemarie Whelan (Nora Clitheroe), Fergal K e l l y ( P e t e r F l y n n ) , Ti m Connaughton (The Young Covey), Greta Carley (Bessie

Burgess), Michelle Whelan (Jinnie Gogan), Jamie T. Murphy (Fluther Good), and that high standard was maintained across the smaller parts also. The set design, staging, props, sound and lighting were all of a very high standard and the crew managed to move the play between the fours acts

with a minimum of fuss or delay. With the depth and richness of Enniscorthy’s theatrical culture and with productions of this quality it is surely only a matter of time before All-Ireland success is achieved by Enniscorthy Drama Group. n

Blues news… The Blackstairs Blues Festival (the longest running consecutive blues festival on this island) celebrates its 21st festival in 2015 – September 11th, 12th and 13th. In fact, the festival commences on Thursday, September 10th, with a Buddy Night in Treacy’s Hotel, featuring Lightning Snake (Acoustic Delta Blues), with finger food and authentic Blues atmosphere. The committee is currently in the process of securing many of Enniscorthy’s finest establishments as venues for this year’s festival. In addition, booking of bands, flights, accommodation etc is well advanced. Thanks to all who attended the recent Blackstairs Blues Table Quiz in Rackard’s Pub, Enniscorthy. The night was a great success, both socially and financially. Rackards was humming with over 10 rounds of questions covering various topics, which gave rise to much merriment and camaraderie – all hosted expertly by Jamie T. Murphy. Well done to all involved especially Johnny and Mairead. The Rory Gallagher Tribute Night has been moved to the 24th of July, downstairs

in The Bailey, Enniscorthy. Acts confirmed for the night so far: Brand New Dead Things, https://www.facebook.com/pages/Brand-NewDead-Things/14673000883866 9. The Gentlemen Callers, https://www.facebook.com/T heGentlemenCallersIreland. The Five Nines, https://www.facebook.com/t hefivenines. With many more acts to be added! The Blues Festival organisers are looking for any old photos you may have from previous festivals. So if you possess any pictures of any of the 400+ gigs since 1995, please email them to bbfjmr@gmail.com for display purposes in the run-up to and during the 21st festival. n

Memory Train: The Musical was the sixth original summer musical from Rathnure Pantomime Society and has just finished a seven night run in Rathnure Hall, where it played to packed houses each night. Brilliantly written and produced by John Reilly, it told the story of a young girl, Carol, who, as she is celebrating her 16th birthday, is struck by tragedy when her mother dies tragically in an alleged mugging. As her father is put in prison for the attack, she feels there is something very wrong. However, fate throws her a lifeline as a mystery train driver, and his steam engine, offers her the chance to go back in time to the 1960s to see if she can solve the mystery of who, from her mother's childhood, would have motive to kill her. One of the stand-out features of the show was the mix of music from the 1960s and 1980s with everything from Let's Twist Again to Wake Me Up Before You Go Go.

Over 70 people performed on stage ranging in age from 6 to adulthood, and they worked seemlessly together. The strong storyline, with great comedy, drama, excellent vocals with strong music numbers and energetic choreography made Memory Train a show never to forget. It took over 100 people to get a show of this scale to the stage, and the three months of hard work most definitely paid off. John Reilly has been writing and producing shows for years and this musical is up there with the best, receiving multiple standing ovations and rave reviews each night. Next for the Pantomime Society is the celebration of their 20th Anniversary, and they have some big surprises in store, so keep an eye on the local press and their Facebook page for more information. Thanks to photographer Damien Murphy for capturing some of the action. n

Well done to Enniscorthy Historic & Re-enactment Society for providing the colour and the clamber. No doubt it will all look good on 6th and encourage lots of people to visit Enniscorthy for the Battle of Vinegar Hill Re-enactment weekend in August.

Success for Noel and Carol Orchard Recording in partnership with the Arts Department of Wexford County Council and the Arts Council are delighted to announce that Noel Quaid and Carole Hollywood are the two successful candidates to receive this year’s Recording Development Bursaries. This award is part of the Room to Record music technology programme initiated by Wexford County Council in 2012 to enhance the opportunities available to Wexford’s emerging musical talent. The Development Bursaries are into their 3rd year of running and have proved to be very successful again this year. Paul Dowling, Orchard Recording,“We are delighted with the response we received from musicians in the Wexford

area to this opportunity. We had an even larger number of applications this year, which shows us that the Wexford music scene is rich with upand-coming talent, and is growing every year. R e c o rd i n g The Development Bursary has been devised to address the need for a greater understanding of professional recording practices/ways of working for emerging bands/artists/singersongwriters. If you are prepari n g t o re c o rd a n a l b u m , embarking on your first recording experience or looking to increase your skill set within a recording studio environment, these are the areas we will be looking at”. Previous successful bursary winners were “Corner Boy” from Killinick in Wexford.

Michael D’Arcy, lead singer with Corner Boy, “We believe that the overall process has helped us garner a greater understanding of the production, recording, editing and writing process.” Philip Knight from the Arts Department, Wexford County County Council said “This is an exciting opportunity for any musician or band to develop their skills, moving from recording ‘in the bedroom / garage’ to a professional studio with the expert support, guidance and production that Orchard Recordings provide. The Arts Department is proud to support these bursaries for a third year.” The R e c o rd i n g Development Bursaries will run in the Orchard Recording Studio, Enniscorthy, over the summer. n

Market Square, Enniscorthy, was an oasis of fantasy, a cacophony of sound and a kaleidescope of colour as Street Rhythms Dance Fest hit our streets in early June. With pink dragons peering menancingly over the parapets of our Castle and Fairy Godmothers, Ugly Sisters and all kinds of Beautiful Princesses dancing and skipping on our pavements Enniscorthy, bathed in much needed sunshine,

became a fantasyland for young and old alike. Puppeteers, Magicians, Drum Circles, Celtic Roots, Disney characters even Belly Dancers bringing mystique and wonder to our streets - gastronomic aromas wafting from food stall on Murphy-Floods corner and Arts and Crafts along Rafter Street, Fairytales and Oscar Awards at the Castle – Enniscorthy definitely came to life over the weekend.

Mammies, daddies and grandads and grannies gathered in numbers to snap their little princes and princesses with Elsa and her friends. Pure magic. Well done to the organising committee for creating this free, family Festival that brings mirth and laughter to the centre of our town each June to begin our Summer of Festivals with our next – The Strawberry Culture and Food Fest coming up on the weekend of 26th to 28th June.

14-year-old Harry Somers, from Enniscorthy, a student in FCJ Bunclody, was one of the privileged VIPs who attended the sneak preview day in Tayto Park, Ashbourne, earlier this month, on the day before the park unveiled its giant new rollercoaster, named Cu Chulainn, to the general public. Harry was one of the first people treated to a whiteknuckle ride on what is Europe's largest wooden rollercoaster standing 32 metres tall at its highest point, with a 31 metre drop at the start and reaching speeds of between 90 and 1200km/h. The rollercoaster also inverts half way round, the first in Europe with this feature. So how did Harry get this special treat? The story started last year when Harry read about the plans of Tayto boss, Ray Coyle, to build Europe’s l a rg e s t ro l l e rc o a s t e r i n Ashbourne, just north of Dublin. Following sound advice from his mother, Audrey, Harry

penned a personal letter to Ray Coyle using the old-fashioned means of pen and paper. Harry explained how he was probably the biggest rollercoaster fan in the world, how his knowledge of rollercoasters is second to none and how delighted he was that at last there would be a rollercoaster in his home country of Ireland. Ray Coyle was so impressed by Harry’s letter that he rang Harry in person and promised him he would be one of the first people to ride the new rollercoaster and, true to his word, Harry and his family got a special invitation to the VIP day and he and his dad, Joe (who doesn’t like heights!) were indeed among the first people to sample the new ride. A particular thrill for Harry was meeting the famous rollercoaster designer, Korey Kiepert from Gravity group, who has designed 56 rollercoasters worldwide. It was one of the best days of young Harry’s life – sometimes dreams do come true! n

ing some good footage was taken along with an interview with Jacqui Hynes. So mark 6th July in your diary as one to watch. On Friday 29th May members of the group travelled to Bloom in the Phoenix Park to take up position at the Visit Wexford Stand in the Main Hall. Re-enactors were on hand for photoshoots with both young and old and it came as a surprise to me how well known the Pike is throughout the length and breadth of the country and how synonomous it is with Wexford. As people came towards the Visit Wexford Stand many, particularly the more senior visitors, would point to the Pike and say ‘Vinegar Hill’. We were perhaps one of the busiest stands on the day and we heard many a story about Wexford connections either parents or grandparents coming from there or dads or granddads singing Boolavogue or memories from people of their childhood holidays in Wexford. It was uplifting to hear the pleasant associations to the county with one elderly gentleman bringing his granddaugter to us saying ‘I can’t believe she’s never heard of Vinegar Hill!’ The young and the not so young were all delighted to have their photograph taken with the Pikemen and even the odd Redcoat. Well done to Visit Wexford we seemed to be the only county in Ireland who were there as a complete unit with Pikemen, Redcoats and Strawberries! At the end of May the group took up residence in tented

accomodation at the Duncannon Military Show this year at the Wexford Racecourse and when I say that it wasn’t quite Glamping you’ll know what I mean. But it was another extremely enjoyable event with a constant and steady flow of people over the two days and again it was uplifting how interested the general public are in our history. People from Carlow, Kildare, Mayo, Dublin, Wicklow and indeed many other parts of the county were all anxious to stop at our camp and explain to their children about Vinegar Hill and find out more about it themselves. Rory O’Connor was a mine of information on the weaponry of the period and gave several detailed talks over the two-day period about the Battle of Vinegar Hill with the Re-enactors creating a bit of a stir as Pikemen and Redcoats took each other to task and if the interest displayed is anything to go by we should have a large influx of visitors on the August Bank Holiday weekend for our Reenactment of Vinegar Hill. A good exercise indeed from both a tourism and networking perspective as we mingled with re-enactment groups from all over the country and from many different historical periods from Celtic, Viking, Roman, WWI, 1916 and WW11 eras. A kaleidescope of living history with all proceeds going to Crumlin Children’s Hospital. – Maria Nolan

Food is now a major part of the new-look Strawberry, Culture & Food Fest Anne Gilpin, Festival Secretary, updates us… Food is central to the new weekend festival: Enniscorthy Strawberry, Culture & Food Fest. It is incredible that you can come to an historic market town (Enniscorthy 510AD), to shop at the local markets … almost in the same places they’ve traded for 400 years! The Feast of Wexford food festival took place in Wexford Town on June 20th and 21st organised by the Wexford Food Family. This is a nonprofit organisation set up to help to grow Wexford’s food industry and to promote Wexford as a food brand locally, nationally and globally. Their aim is to establish Wexford as the food capital of Ireland!

Those who joined this celebration of the best of Wexford produced foods can vouch for the wonderful array and quality of food that was on offer. The Feast of Wexford event was part of the Wexford Maritime Festival, and with the huge range of activities and spectacles on offer thousands of visitors were attracted to the town over the weekend. n

New GP service without fees Starting July 1st, the new GP service without fees will benefit children aged up to five years of age, and from August 1st, for senior citizens aged 70 or more. Over 75% of GPs in Wexford have signed up to provide this service. The service is the first concrete step to universal health care, providing wider access to health care without fees to more people, alongside a renewed focus on primary care, better management of chronic disease in the community, wellness and prevention. There are no means tests or sickness tests. You can sign up on-line. All you need is your name, PPS number and contact details, and your child’s date of birth and PPS number.

You will also need to know the name of your doctor of choice. Children who already have a medical card or a GP visit card do not need to register again. For children under six, the new service also includes dedicated asthma checks for children with the condition, and two wellness assessments aimed at identifying future health problems early such as childhood obesity. This new and improved service will be provided to all children under six including those who already have medical cards. Some GPs will also provide a new enhanced diabetes management service for adults with Type II diabetes who have a medical card or doctor visit card.

Patients are free to move from one GP to another if they so wish, provided the GP can accommodate them. You will not receive a Doctor Visit Card automatically. You have to sign up. Signing up is simple and you can do so on-line at www.gpvisitcard.ie. You can ring 1890 252 919 for further advice. Anyone aged 70 or over who does not already have a Medical Card or Doctor Visit Card, will be entitled this summer to see their GP without paying fees. Subject to successful negotiations with the Irish Medical Organisation, it is intended to phase in GP services without fees to other children and manage more chronic diseases in general practice in the coming years. n

Hay Fever by Leonie Grant

The Duffry Enniscorthy | Wexford | Gorey | Arklow The recent good weather has managed to put a smile on n e a r l y e v e r y o n e ’s f a c e . Unfortunately, along with the sunshine comes an unwelcome condition for many adults and children. Hay fever is a common allergic condition that affects up to one-in-five people at some point in their life. The symptoms of hay fever are caused when a person has an allergic reaction to pollen. Pollen is a fine powder released by plants as part of their reproductive cycle. Pollen contains proteins that can cause the nose, eyes, throat and sinuses to become swollen, irritated and inflamed. You can have an allergy to: • tree pollen, released during spring • grass pollen, released during the end of spring and beginning of summer • weed pollen, released any time from early spring to late autumn Hay fever symptoms vary in severity and your symptoms may be worse some years over others, depending on the weather conditions and the pollen count. The symptoms of hay fever include: • frequent sneezing • runny or blocked nose • itchy, red or watery eyes (also known as allergic conjunctivitis) • an itchy throat, mouth, nose and ears Less commonly, you may experience: • the loss of your sense of smell • facial pain (caused by blocked sinuses) • sweats • headaches While symptoms of hay fever may be mild, they can interfere with your sleep and your daily activities at school or work. If you have asthma, your asthma symptoms may get worse when you have hay fever. Sometimes, asthma symptoms only occur when you have hay fever. Many people find that their symptoms improve as they get older. Around half of people report some improvement in symptoms after several years. In around 10%-20% of people symptoms go away completely. TReATMeNT There is currently no cure for hay fever but most people are able to relieve symptoms with treatment, at least to a certain extent. In an ideal world, the most effective way to control

hay fever would be to avoid exposure to pollen. However, this is almost impossible so your best option is to talk to your pharmacist in Grant’s Pharmacy who can advise on your best treatment options as discussed below. Antihistamines treat hay fever by blocking the action of the chemical histamine, which the body releases when it thinks it is under attack from an allergen. This prevents the symptoms of the allergic reaction from occurring. Antihistamines are usually effective at treating itching, sneezing and watery eyes, but they may not help with clearing a blocked nose. They are available in tablet form and also as nasal sprays. You can use antihistamines: • as an "as-required" treatment – where you take them when you first notice that you are developing the symptoms of hay fever • as a preventative treatment – for example, if you know there is going to be a high pollen count, you can take them before leaving the house in the morning Different antihistamine tablets for hay fever include cetirizine and loratadine. A common antihistamine spray is azelastine. Unlike older antihistamines, these newer types shouldn't cause drowsiness, although this can occasionally occur in some people. Corticosteroids (steroids) are used to treat hay fever because they have an antiinflammatory effect. When the pollen triggers your allergic reaction, the inside of your nose becomes inflamed. Corticosteroids can reduce this inflammation and prevent the symptoms of hay fever. Corticosteroids are more effective than antihistamine tablets at preventing and relieving nasal symptoms, including sneezing and congestion. They can also relieve itchy, watery eyes. They are most effective if you start using them a couple of weeks before your symptoms usually begin, and work best when used regularly. Hay fever can cause a blocked nose. A decongestant, in the form of a nasal spray, can relieve this. Decongestants reduce the swelling of the blood vessels in your nose, which opens your nasal passage and makes breathing easier. Nasal

Leonie Grant

decongestants shouldn't be used for longer than seven days. They may cause dryness and irritation in your nasal passage, and can make the symptoms of congestion worse (this is known as rebound congestion). Just check with your pharmacist and you will receive the best advice. Eye drops are available from your pharmacist to treat the hay fever symptoms that affect your eyes, such as redness, itchiness and watering (allergic conjunctivitis). These drops contain antihistamine to reduce the inflammation in your eyes, which will relieve the symptoms. Your Pharmacist will point you to the most effective treatment. Hay fever usually begins in childhood or during the teenage years, but you can get it at any age. The condition is more common in boys than in girls. In adults, men and women are equally affected. Hay fever is more likely if there is a family history of allergies, particularly asthma or eczema. SelF-HelP TIPS It is sometimes possible to prevent the symptoms of hay fever by taking some basic precautions, such as: • wearing wraparound sunglasses to stop pollen getting in your eyes when you are outdoors • change your clothes and take a shower after being outdoors to remove the pollen on your body • try to stay indoors when the pollen count is high (over 50) Hay fever does not pose a serious threat to health but it can have a negative impact on your quality of life. People with very bad hay fever often find that it can disrupt their productivity at school or work. Another common complication of hay fever is inflammation of the sinuses (sinusitis). This can be quite debilitating and tiring. The sun is shining in Enniscorthy at present so allow Grant’s Pharmacy to enhance your pleasure this summer with the best and cheapest hay fever treatments available. We have a full selection of branded and generic options coupled with free advice to allay any confusion when searching for the best treatment for your hay fever. 25 jobs Local success story continues SouthEast Enniscorthy European Capital for Business Association Wexford of Culture Bid Waterford, Wexford and Kilkenny have joined forces to make an official bid for the title of european Capital of Culture Southeast 2020 and the new brand for the three counties’ bid has been announced as ‘Three Sisters 2020’. The brand name and new website www.threesisters2020.ie draws on the three rivers of the three counties, The Barrow, The Nore and The Suir. The European Capital of Culture is designated by the European Union for a period of one calendar year during which the host city or region organises a series of cultural events with a strong European dimension. Commenting on the launch of the website Michael Quinn the Bid Director said, “We are delighted to launch the offical website for the Three Sisters 2020 Bid. Our Bid is from the people of three counties of Ireland and while we are leading this as a Bid team our approach to the entire Bid is through the people of the South East region and beyond. The website is an integral

part of this, it offers everyone the opportunity to do what we are calling ‘their bit for the bid’. We are asking every person, schoolgoers, community groups, individuals, business people, those already involved in arts and culture and more importantly those who feel they are not, to come on-board and to get involved. The threesisters2020.ie website enables them to do just that through its interactive set-up. We would like to hear everyone’s creative thoughts and even hair-brained ideas for what they would like to see the region create and look like for the European Capital of Culture 2020.” The chosen city will selected by a jury nominated by the European Commission and in these coming months the selection process will get underway. Log on to www.threesisters2020.ie or email threesisters2020@kilkennycoco.ie. ‘Three Sisters 2020’ can be found on Twitter, Facebook, Instagram and Youtube at ‘Three Sisters 2020’. #BitfortheBid #ThreeSisters n

Minister Paul Kehoe has welcomed the announcement of 25 new jobs for the county in the medical devices manufacturing sector. “The announcement by CRI of 25 new jobs is a significant development for Wexford. It is a positive step on the long road to recovery and a sign that things are moving in the right direction. The creation of even one job has a ripple effect within the county, effecting families and local businesses, providing greater stability and putting more money back into the hands of that community. “CRI Wexford specialises in custom interventional balloon design and manufacturing. Over the next three years, the Wexford facility will expand to support operations at CRI’s four other locations in Indianapolis, Costa Rica and two locations in Minnesota. Minister Kehoe believes, “The Government’s Action Plan for Jobs is working, with over 100,000 new jobs created nationwide since its launch in February 2012, with unemployment in Wexford down 20% in this time period.” n

Kehoe in Dáil criticises Dunne’s vacant premises in Enniscorthy Vacant Dunnes premises on Rafter Street.

L-R: Rachel Scully (Cottage to Castle Curtains), Michael Bennett (outgoing Chamber President), Maree Lyng (incoming Chamber Vice-President), Tadhg Darcy (Cottage to Castle Curtains), John Burke-O’Leary (incoming Chamber President) at cheque presentation to Cottage to Castle Curtains, winners of the Chamber’s St Patrick’s Day window decoration competition.

enniscorthy & District Chamber held its Annual General Meeting on Wednesday, June 10th 2015, in the Riverside Park Hotel, e n n i s c o r t h y. I n c o m i n g President, John Burke O’leary, received the chain of office from outgoing President, Michael Bennett. The new Vice President is Maree lyng with long-serving Margot Banville Hogan agreeing to stay on as Secretary. John Leary addressed the gathering thanking them for their support and setting out his priorities for the year ahead… “This is a time of great opportunity for Enniscorthy. It is a time when we, as Chamber members, need to show a unity of purpose and dedicate ourselves to working in partnership with Wexford County Council, our officials and politicians, with the NRA, in respect of the by-pass project, with the Board of Works in relation to the flood relief scheme, with our friends and colleagues in the Enniscorthy Business Association, the festivals committees and the tidy towns committee. We need to reinvigorate our efforts to promote and develop our retail offering through our retail development committee, which is doing such fantastic work in collaboration with the EBA.

Our industrial development committee is doing great work in developing another advance factory or offices and is engaging strongly with the County Council in this regard. Clearstream’s success story started with an advance factory built by this Chamber. The 1916 commemoration is upon us and the 1916 committee have seen to it that Enniscorthy will have a central role in those commemorations, particularly on Easter Monday, 2016. During my predecessor’s presidency, Enniscorthy & District Chamber of Commerce invited along and supported the membership of other parts of the district governed by Enniscorthy Municipal District of Wexford County Council including Bunclody, Clonroche, Bree, Ferns, Blackwater and Camolin. We are so glad to have members from those areas who strengthen our dedication to the prosperity of this part of County Wexford. This is a time of great excitement nationally when we see employment figures rising nationally and locally, and where we see unemployment figures plunging fast, now well below 10%. There are new jobs in the offing in Enniscorthy which I cannot announce quite yet but I will say no more than there are significant developments afoot.

We have an historic town and in the next few years, over forty million euros is going to be spent on the flood relief scheme and many more millions spent on the M11 bypass. Our focus has to be on the development of Enniscorthy’s image as an historic town and an attractive town in which to do business. Our visitors tell us that this town is a great town to visit. Our job is to focus the planned infrastructural expenditure on keeping the town attractive for business, tourism and leisure. We all need to talk up our town and think and talk positive. In one very successful business in Ennis we heard that the words ‘downturn’ and ‘recession’ were banned with good effect. I return now to the post that you have assigned to me. I am sure that I will often go wrong and even when right, may be thought wrong by some, but I rely on the teamwork and mutual support and unity of purpose and dedication that I have seen in this Chamber since becoming a member many years ago. Relying on that good will, I will do my best and rely on your help and may the Good Lord lead our actions so that we will do what is best for the life and prosperity of the people of our Chamber District. Thank you. n

Minister Paul Kehoe, Government Chief Whip, has called on Dunnes Stores to release vacant properties in town centres. Speaking in the Dáil on 18th June on the Urban Regeneration and Housing Bill, Minister Kehoe stated: “We have a major problem in towns throughout Ireland. A major Irish retail business, Dunnes Stores, opened up several new stores a number of years ago on the edges of towns and left our urban centres. This has left stores in the centre of our urban areas closed, vacant and empty. This is causing major blight in towns and cities throughout Ireland.” “Dunnes Stores has an onus to act because the people in each of the towns where it has premises have been support-

ing Dunnes Stores for many years. It is about time Dunnes Stores went about renting out these vacant properties in urban areas. Specifically I have in mind my own town of Enniscorthy where there is a huge vacant store. It is a blight on the street. This absolutely infuriates the rest of the retailers and traders in and around the town.” “Towns have been under major pressure in the past few years and doing their best to keep their shops open. If we are to reinvigorate town centres, people should rent out their vacant stores because plenty of others are interested in them. They should not be afraid of competition in the area.” The Bill will introduce a vacant site levy to incentivise the development of vacant

sites in urban areas. This will help the supply of housing and incentivise regeneration in areas where this is much needed. In the past few years the presence of vacant sites in towns has caused a huge problem. “The Bill will also address housing supply issues by helping to increase housing construction activity. In my constituency of Wexford this is a major problem. Wexford is like any other county in the country where there is a major housing shortage. “ “Every family should have the opportunity to own a house, but there are many people who are unable to buy and invest in a house. As a Government, we have to give them an opportunity to own their own house. The Bill will help these families.” n

PET BLESSING!

VET DIARY FOR JULY This month, Joe Kavanagh, looks at trust and self-belief. When I was in college (a few years ago now!) one of the lads training with us was on the Kilkenny hurling panel. He, like most Kilkenny people I know, is an absolute gentleman but he used to say “the difference between Wexford and Kilkenny hurling is that Wexford head to Croke Park hoping to win, Kilkenny on the other hand are going expecting to win!” It's all about our belief in ourselves. The same is true in all walks of life, including our own profession. Sometimes you go out on a limb, stick your neck on the line and if you get it right you're a genius… if you get it wrong… well we all know what comes next then!! Because of the nature of our work often times we are working alone, as in, without the membership of a whole medical team on hand. We have to make decisions ourselves and stand over them. It tests your metal, your clinical abilities and also your belief in yourself. When you go that extra mile, go with your hunch or gut feeling and get the desired result it brings such a great feeling of satisfaction that makes it all worthwhile. But it does more than that… it's trusting in your abilities, your innate sense of what's got to be done. That simple word 'trust' is what you do every time you come through that door. You trust that your animal will be given the best care and hopefully we will deliver on that trust. For us, believing in what we do makes the difference. Our Wexford lads are putting in the same, if not more, nights training, weight programmes and diet regimes as other teams. Their day will come. They just have to keep believing in themselves. I, for one, believe they will. n

SUN SHINES ON CORPUS CHRISTI PROCESSION There was an amazing turnout for the enniscorthy Annual Corpus Christi Procession, which took place on Wednesday evening, 10th June. The sun shone strongly as the crowd assembled at St. Senan's Church from half six onwards for the 7pm start. The Blessed Sacrament was at the front of the Procession this year and Fr. John Byrne from St. Senan's parish carried the Blessed Sacrament whilst Bishop Denis Brennan, Fr. Billy Swan and Fr. Banville walked alongside. The First Holy Communion children gave a great sparkle to the Procession, all dressed up in their special outfits for the occasion. There were lots of people carrying banners representing various prayer groups and other caring groups from the parishes and also from various parts of the diocese. The Procession took the trad i t i o n a l ro u t e d o w n Templeshannon, over the new bridge, up Castle Hill and through Market Square. The Gardai were present to stop the traffic. Stephen Murphy sang hymns so beautifully along the route and Tara Manning gave

FREE Ice cream!

out the Rosary and the congregation joined in. Shop windows were dressed with flowers and statues and also houses had statues of the Sacred Heart in their windows and flower baskets outside their doors to show reverence for the Blessed Sacrament. The streets were decorated so lovingly with papal flags and red and white flags symbolising the feast day. The Procession arrived at the Cathedral at 7.30pm where there was benediction and prayers. Following that, a special visitor awaited in the grounds of the cathedral - Mr Mac had arrived and the children (and adults) were all given a free ice cream compliments of the parish.

Tea/coffee, buns and biscuits were also available in the cathedral grounds and everyone stayed around to enjoy the refreshments and spend some time chatting, catching up with friends on what was truly a beautiful summer’s evening and the true spirit of community and belonging was experienced here in the town on this lovely feastday. Many thanks to Frank O'Connor and his team who put up the flags all over the town and to Stephen Murphy and Tara Manning and also to everyone who helped out in any way - your help was most greatly appreciated. Thank You. - Patricia McNally

View from the Hill Free GP care For under sixes Great play is being made of the new free G.P. scheme for the under sixes. It seems a little peculiar to me that a healthy child of a well-off family can have free doctor visits while a sickly child of a middle or low income family is unable to benefit. This may be because the child is over six and the family income is slightly over the limit for a medical card. A child suffering a long-term illness or condition of an outwardly financially well-off family will not benefit either if he/she is over six. We have all seen the furore in recent times concerning the withdrawal of discretionary

medical cards and the hardship that caused. Would it not have been wiser for the government to deal with these matters before introducing the present scheme which doesn’t appear to have the support of a large proportion of the doctors who will have to operate the scheme. From the look of Health Minister Leo Varadakar every time he mentions the policy it strikes me that he is not totally convinced that this is the right time for such an innovation. By the time he took over Health from James R e i l l y t h i n g s w e re s o f a r advanced that it couldn’t be stopped. So we’re stuck with it.

Burn The Bondholders A few years ago none of us would have known what a bondholder was. Now we all know and furthermore we know that the majority of us suffered enormously because the present and previous governments decided to hand over billions of our cash to these gamblers. Now suddenly, just as the majority of these guys have been paid in full, the retiring governor of the Central Bank declares that in his opinion these people shouldn’t be paid. Immediately Joan Burton chips in that she agrees with this. Question: Where was the Governor and Joan for the past four years when all the big bondholder boys were walking away laughing at the Irish who met their debts in full without getting any writedown of our debt whatever. Greece got huge amounts written off their debts and are looking for more but we, regardless of the hardship, paid up in full. I don’t think we are going to be fooled with this one. We have learned that as we approach the next general election soundbites like this will emerge from the strangest of quarters. As they say – in one ear and out the other – would be a good policy in relation to these matters. Make our minds up on what the parties did rather

than what they said they would do is my motto. General elecTion A few months ago I wrote that it was unfair of the media and others to be attempting to dictate the date of the next general election. I am still of the view that any distraction for ministers in particular from the task at hand is not to be welcomed. Realistically, however, a monthly publication like Slaney News has to be ahead of the curve in relation to elections. Even allowing for a March 2016 election we have only seven or eight issues from August to that date. So from August next this column might take a look at each of our sitting T.D.s and give one person’s view of their performance and their chances of re-election. As other candidates are declared we may take a look at them as well. Readers may not agree with the views expressed but we will be fair and constructive rather than negative and destructive. sTraWBerry FesT The Strawberry Fest is upon us again and very welcome it is. This event which is now in its 48th year is one of the better established festivals in Ireland. Those who organise the event

Strawberry Culture & Food Fest 2015 deserve great credit for the amount of voluntary time and effort which they put into the festival. Those of us who simply walk around and enjoy the atmosphere have no idea of the months of work which has gone into making this fest the success that it is. We are promised some changes this year so let’s hope now for good weather, a few euro in our pockets and the health to enjoy it. As a matter of interest Cambridge, north of London, also has a strawberry fair each year for the past 40 years. It’s a one day affair and was held on June 6th. Not a patch on Enniscorthy though. irish WaTer Some day soon, despite the best efforts of Irish Water, we’ll find out how many people actually paid their water bills. We’ve been given details of how many households registered but, at the time of writing this column, blank refusals on the big question. Maybe I have become a

complete cynic but I suspect that many registered just to get the €100 rather than to be good citizens. By the time this is all over Irish Water is going to cost the Exchequer (us) millions rather than make millions. Joan Burton’s Department of Social Protection had to get an extra €650,000 the other day to upgrade the computer system to allow it make deductions from peoples’ social welfare payments should the need arise. On top of that we have all the massive salaries and pensions that the employees of this quango are now entitled to. To be honest it just gets more farcical by the day. Regrettably when it all ends badly we know who will foot the bill. The Missus and Me I was clearing out some old papers the other day and came across an early school report on myself. It read “He’s a sociable boy, plays well, eats well and sleeps well”. The Missus had a look at it and said, “Ah well nothing much has changed then.” n We are often asked: Who is the “View from the Hill” columnist? All we can say is that the author’s surname is NOT Doyle!

GOREY There was a special welcome for dunnes workers and supporters from co. Wexford at the decency For dunnes rally which took place in dublin earlier this month. icTu President John douglas saluted dunnes workers and launched a scathing attack on dunnes management. Local Sinn Féin Cllr. Johnny Mythen has stated that: “This is about decent wages and working conditions, secure hours and the the right to trade union representation – basically fair play and common decency. “ Wa y b a c k i n 1 9 11 i n Wexford our people fought for such basic rights at Pierces Foundry. It’s unbelievable that

over a hundred years later as we're on the cusp of the 1916 centenary we're still fighting for such basic workers’ rights. We saw in Gorey recently that we're a long, long way from 21st century working conditions." Sinn Féin councillor in Gorey, Fionntán Ó Súilleabháin, later issued the following statement: "I understand that many people in the Gorey area now feel quite angry towards Dunnes Stores. However, I would say to them – please don't boycott Dunnes – but rather use the main shopping centre entrance instead. “The customers must let Margaret Heffernan know that putting her ego above the inter-

ests and welfare of her own staff and of the rest of the Centre's staff is intolerable. Boycotting Dunnes would be counterproductive from the point of view of over a hundred staff and their families. By purposely using the main Centre entrance only, her reckless and arrogant publicity stunt will backfire and she will have the other entrance all to herself. “Footfall to Dunnes helps smaller outlets such as Hickeys, The Carphone Warehouse, The Bagel Bar, Click , Funtech, Elverys, Whitmores, Vera Moda, Lipstick, Paul Byron , Rynharts, Meteor, Insomnia and others. And vice versa. It works both ways". n

Ford Mondeo

it’s been a busy few weeks on the car front with cars to review and events to attend. in the last issue of the Slaney News i reviewed the Ford Mondeo Wagon. That issue had only gone to print when i found myself behind the wheel of the Ford Mondeo again, this time the hatchback with a 1.6 litre diesel (113bhp) under the bonnet. The Mondeo really is a super car to drive and very frugal too with the 1.6 litre diesel, returning up to 64mpg. It’s not quite as powerful as the 2.0 litre diesel and is less forgiving if you want to pick up speed quickly and find yourself in the wrong gear, but it still has plenty of pull and the refinement is very good too. The car I tested in top level Titanium trim with all the goodies retails at €31,645. I’ve started to video the cars i test drive and put them up on youTube, so I was out filming the Mondeo at the beginning of the month too. It’s a bit of extra work and the Irish weather certainly presents a challenge when you are trying to record outside, but it’s nice to capture these cars on film. In June I also got a last minute invitation to go along with Opel Ireland to

Amsterdam to test drive the new opel Karl. Karl is Opel’s new five door city car and Opel is keeping it in the family by naming it after the son of the brand’s founder. With prices starting at just above €12,000, it’s a cheap entry point into the Opel range. It had been a while since I’d driven a left hand drive car on the right hand side of the road, but with a bit of concentration and due care, it passed off without incident! My first impressions of the new Opel Karl were good. It felt solid on the motorway bits, and light and compact in town. There will be just one engine available for Karl, a 1.0 litre petrol unit with 75hp. The Karl is due to arrive here in August. My next event was Women@siMi hosted by the SIMI (Society of the Irish Motor Industry). Women@SIMI is an event organised for women working in the Irish motor industry, and is attended by women from different sectors such as vehicle testing, vehicle body repairers, franchise sales, distributors and media. The event is now in its second year. This year the speakers were from the motor industry and further afield, including

politics, business and aviation: Rowena Dooley, Dealer Principal at Dooley Motors in Carlow and Hon Treasurer SIMI, Louise Phelan, VP Global Operations at PayPal, Mary O’Rourke, former TD, and Gráinne Cronin, the first female pilot at Aer Lingus. Wexford man and newly appointed President of the siMi, Mark Boggan, opened the event and acknowledged that the industry has a big challenge to encourage more female employees to seek out more diverse roles in the industry, for example, as technicians, sales executives and dealer principals. I love going to this event because it is an opportunity to meet women working in the industry, make new contacts and listen to the great speakers that SIMI lines up. My final motoring event for June was the Wexford Motor show on the Quays in Wexford Town. All the dealers were represented there and there was an impressive display of the model ranges from the different manufacturers, along with a few classics. It was really busy when I visited in the afternoon, so maybe there are lots out there thinking of changing their car?

It was certainly a welltimed event, just before the new 152 registration plate comes in on July 1st. The Wexford Motor Show is a great opportunity for people to reach the dealers all in one place, get information and actually sit in and look around the cars in a friendly environment without any sales pressure. I had a good nose around the cars on the different dealer displays and of course I was interested to see some of the brand new models that have only just arrived in the dealers, like the Jaguar XE, SsangYong Tivoli, and Mazda 2 and CX3. I also stopped to talk to some of the trainers from the Waterford and Wexford education and Training Board (WWeTB) who train apprentice mechanics. For the show they had brought along some of the equipment that they use to teach the apprentices. They told me that often there is confusion about how you go about becoming a mechanic and getting an apprenticeship, and they wanted to clarify that the applicant must get a place as an apprentice mechanic with a dealer first, before they can apply to the WWETB. Though there are more and more jobs being advertised around Wexford in the motor trade, it’s difficult to come by these apprentice mechanic openings and when they are advertised, they can be swamped with applicants. So if you are interested in training as a mechanic, I was told the advice is to go around and call into dealers and ask if they have any vacancies. So that’s all my motoring news for this month. Happy July motoring! n

Ferrybank Motors scoops national award congratulations to Wexford’s Ferrybank Motors on winning the customer excellence award from opel ireland for 2014. This award recognises dealers who actively practise, promote and deliver the highest levels of customer service within the Opel network. Ferrybank Motors is par-

ticularly pleased that the award is judged on customer feedback and they would like to thank their loyal customers, who provide the positive feedback, for their continuing support. And of course thanks also to all the staff team at Ferrybank Motors who make customer satisfaction such a huge priority. n

classic cars at Wells

Pic: Maria Nolan

on sunday 24th May Wells house hosted yet another classic day out from its 2015 year of events Programme - The classic car show. The lawn in front of the estate house was strewn with classics from every era from vintage to modern day with over 200 cars to be seen by the large influx of spectators. all of the cars were in pristine condition and the fact that they are loved and cherished by their owners is perfectly obvious from their immaculate appearance. Love has indeed been lavished on these fabulous machines and owners are extremely proud of their vehicles and even more anxious to

talk about them. They are eager to talk to spectators about these prize possessions but they are even more eager to talk among themselves. And it is evident that this is more than just a hobby, this is an all consuming passion, and a time consuming one by all accounts as owners recount how much blood and sweat and money they pump into their pride and joy. Another winner for Wells as owners, enthusiasts and viewers enjoyed the marvellous spectacle. Look out this August Bank Holiday weekend when the Classic Car Show will be visiting Enniscorthy for the holiday Festival. – Maria Nolan

Local author Carmel Harrington lands international deal recently, Maria nolan caught up with Focal committee member and local author carmel harrington who was delighted to chat about her exciting new two-book deal with Publisher harper collins and her happy, busy life as wife, mother, panellist and writer. Carmel’s life reads like a dream or a fairytale – working for a Dublin company Carmel O’Grady was instructed to take her long overdue 3 weeks leave or lose it so she decided, as you do, to hire an apartment in Florida and write a book – and that’s exactly what she did! Beyond Grace’s Rainbow was created in those three life-defining weeks and Carmel returned home with her creation asking her nearest and dearest what they thought. And they all thought it was a great story but Carmel thinking “sure what else

would they say, they’re family” put her manuscript in a shoe box under the bed and returned to ‘normal’ life. In a short while she had met and married Roger Harrington and during her first pregnancy while suffering a little with boredom she decided to revisit the manuscript under the bed. Getting a very positive response and encouragement from husband Roger she made up her mind to self-publish and the rest as they say is almost history. Beyond Grace’s Rainbow was an instant success becoming both Kindle Book of the Year 2013 and the Romantic eBook of the Year 2013 bringing Carmel’s gift of storytelling to the attention of well known publishing house Harper Collins who were quick to offer her a book deal. The Life You Left – Carmel’s second novel was launched at

page, at times emotional, at others thoughtful. The Life You Left will make you see life in a different way.” Since then things have gone from better to better still for our budding author with Carmel being portrayed often as the next Meave Binchy. She is now a regular panellist on TV3’s Midday Show where she discusses mostly how she juggles her busy life of wife, mother, and writer and still manages to enjoy it all. Harper Collins have just offered her a new two-book deal with her next novel The Road Back Home due out in the Spring of 2016 and a further book in 2017. Carmel is delighted to have moved from Harper Impulse to Harper Fiction .”It has always been my dream to work with the Harper Fiction team and to be in such esteemed company as Celia Ahern and Claudia

enniscorthy author Paul o’reilly will be launching his debut collection of short stories ‘The Girl Missing from the Window’ this Friday 26th June at 7.30pm in enniscorthy’s beautiful Presentation centre preceded by a strawberries and wine reception and followed by ‘a bit of a session’ in stamps hostelry on Market square. In ‘The Girl Missing from the Window’ the stories deal with the darker aspects of modern Irish life in various domestic settings. O’Reilly’s stories move from teenage text-bullying to the male experience of the away match, from death to grief. There is no stylistic embroidery in these layered

and textured stories of family and home. When asked about his first collection, O’Reilly said, “Being a book of stories, sometimes they might feel like very separate entities. But, when I had completed the collection, and thought some more on it, the book can be boiled down to the drama of family and home. Even the stories not set in the home have a character looking back to the home, or the people in it. It’s there I find the source of all my drama.” Acclaimed Irish writer Peter Murphy said, “’The Girl Missing from the Window’ does not attempt to forge poetry out of the everyday. O’Reilly pushes all the unsavoury

Carroll. I am also very excited about another novel that I am working on at present with HarperImpulse which is due out this October.” Where does this lady get her energy? She also looks after daughter Amelia aged 6 and 3year-old son Nate as well as being a central cog of FOCAL Wexford’s Literary Festival. Carmel attributes her oomph and vitality to the fact that she has a very happy and fulfilled life and is doing what she loves to do. FOCAL Wexford’s Literary Festival is honoured to have someone of Carmel’s character and standing on its committee and her input over the past two years has been phenomenal. Carmel has a winning combination being both extremely hard-working and extremely creative. No job is too small or too big for Carmel, she has a

In the past O’Reilly’s stories have also been shortlisted for the Hennessy First Fiction Prize and the Seán O’Faoláin Prize. Enniscorthy Library… o’casey Workshop at Enniscorthy Library: On Thursday evening 4th June, Ciara Murphy facilitated yet another literary workshop at Enniscorthy Library. This time the focus was on Sean O`Casey and in particular one of his Dublin trilogy plays – The Plough and The Stars which was soon to be performed by Enniscorthy Drama Group at The Presentation Centre. Ciara, who has previously facilitated workshops on both Yeats and Synge, was delighted with the response on Thursday night to O`Casey. The attendance were well informed and enthusiastic. The workshop began with a discussion on O`Casey’s life and the 1900s Dublin that he was born into. There was lengthy debate on the themes of the play, particularly heroism and the many forms of it depicted in The Plough and The Stars. The characters were analysed as were key scenes allowing the group to delve deeply into the world O`Casey strove to make visible to the masses, mainly the world and the plight of the Dublin working classes. Many of the participants attending were involved with the production of The Plough and The Stars on 18th/19th/20th/21st June at The Presentation Centre and on Friday 26th June at St. Brigid’s Hall, Carnew, making them very familiar with the essence of the play which of course contributed to lively conversation and banter and made the evening a most enjoyable and interactive one. Well done to Enniscorthy Library especially Librarian Jarlath Glynn for providing this excellent opportunity prior to the staging of the play in the town. – Maria Nolan

From Wexford With Love Focal – Wexford literary Festival committee is delighted to announce its very first publication entitled – from Wexford With love. A collection of Travel Stories, Memoirs and Poems from well known Wexford personalities to be launched at this year’s FOCAL Festival on Saturday 27th June. From Wexford With Love is a bit of a labour of love for me being that it is dedicated to the memory of my late father, Martin Doyle, who passed away in 2007 with Alzheimers. Since then I have been anxious to do something both in his memory and for the Alzheimers Society who are doing Trojan work increasing awareness of this dreaded illness. I had done Coffee Mornings and Afternoon Teas but wanted to do a little bit more, so as an avid traveller I decided to write

a travel log and publish it myself until I mentioned the idea to my wonderful author, friend and fellow FOCAL committee member Carmel Harrington. Mrs. H’s creative juices immediately began to flow and she came up with the novel notion, if you’ll pardon the pun, of including authors, poets and personalities either from Wexford or with a Wexford connection. With approximately 39 submissions from well known scribes and bards we were totally blown away by the response and not just that all were so willing to offer their talents and services for free including graphic designer Brian Byrne. I also have a special mention for printer Joe Hogan for all his help and patience and goodwill and for the lovely comments he made about my dad when I approached him to

do the book. He would be honoured to do it he said in memory of a man who had made a difference in his life – how nice is that? From Wexford With Love is a beautiful publication of warm and wonderful stories and poems and I want to thank everyone from the bottom of my heart especially the FOCAL committee, our proof readers Paul O’Reilly and Caroline Busher and in particular my dear friend Carmel because without her spark of brilliance this would not have happened. It is a book that you will pick up in a spare moment and enjoy a story with a cuppa. I am extremely proud that we have done it and well pleased that it is dedicated to my dad and all sufferers of Alzheimers and those who suffer with them. Compiled by Focal – Wexford Literary Festival with

New Slaney Writing… Martin Joseph Byrne will soon be publishing his third collection of poetry, ‘Assassins, for those whom souls chapter mercy’. Martin is the only published writer in the parish of Ballindaggin. He is published at Lapwing Poetry Belfast. Martin says: “The assassins in this book are often ourselves exposed; the poetry is honed in conflict and analysis’s relationships. It is very personal, cutting right to the bone. Make no mistake this is not poetry for the faint hearted, it is scatological and psycho-political. Scatological poetry is therapeutic to read and write. It vents anger, this is important to me as I have schizophrenia. ‘It is the secular spirituality of the real world, full of integrity and honesty.’ These are the paraphrased words of publisher, Mr. Dennis Grieg.” This is modern art at the cutting edge. This is Art rock poetry as the book is inspired by art. It is a deliberate assault on the contemporary poetry world safe conservatism in content. n

To The dyinG in hoPeMan harBour by ron Smith “The little ships, the little ships rushed out across the sea” but now those pretty young boats lie rotting by quay. No more the vital longed for craft which they once used to be, they've had their finest hour and now go down in history. “And home they brought their warriors, weary, ragged and worn” But now those god sent vessels lie stripped and look forlorn. no more proud sails fate saved soldiers remembers those hulks and mourn. “Three hundred thousand warriors from hell to home they came” But who can now remember the skipper or the name. They've both been under fire and all sheard fears the same Now study their condition and tell me who's to blame. “The little ships, the little ships rushed out in their pride” How many of those saved ones felt England's soil and cried. We remember maimed companions and we friends of those who died But how many of us feel some pain for the ships which we would hide. n
