comment One of the recurring themes in this newspaper over the last five years has been the importance of the tourism industry to the Enniscorthy area. Without a major, new industrial employer in the town the future prospects for economic growth will largely depend on growing our tourism trade. So it’s great to see tourist numbers up as evidenced by both hotels in town being exceptionally busy, retailers reporting increased sales to tourists, and by the results of a recent survey by MyHome.ie showing Co. Wexford to be the fourth most popular county in Ireland for domestic visitors at 10% (up from 8.5% last year). Our local hoteliers are definitely playing their part with planning permission being sought for yet another extension at the Riverside Park Hotel and Treacy’s Hotel now offering extra accommodation in an additional premises beside the railway station. Our festivals are playing their part – all have been huge successes so far this year and we’re delighted to hear the Strawberry Festival has announced its dates for next year – Wednesday 22nd to Sunday 26th June. The hoped-for success of the movie Brooklyn should help to increase tourist footfall in the town also. Let’s all play our own individual parts by helping our local Council and our committed Tidy Towns Committee to keep Enniscorthy clean and litter-free and by making every effort to warmly welcome visitors to the town. – Frank Corcoran

Spanning the generations FOCAL Wexford Literary Festival and Enniscorthy Castle hosted a most unique event on Friday 31st July as Australian Jennifer Wood (nee Prendergast) was welcomed to the home of her ancestor Philip de Prendergast who built Enniscorthy Castle almost 800 years ago. Jenny arrived to Market Square and was escorted to her ancestral home by Pikemen and Redcoats to the sound of pipe and drum. At the door of the Castle she was met by Diarmuid McMurragh (aka Richie Cotter) who explained how her ancestor Philip de Prendergast had arrived in Enniscorthy – Diarmuid of course as we all know being instrumental in the Norman`s arrival in Ireland. Richie then escorted the Lady of the Castle inside where she was met and welcomed by Enniscorthy Municipal District Chairman Paddy Kavanagh who presented Jenny with Colm Toibin’s book A History of Enniscorthy and told her how delighted the town was to have an ancestor of Philip de Prendergast return to the Castle. Among those invited to the colourful pageant was a member of the Roche family who were the last residents of Enniscorthy Castle. David Hasslacher and Jennifer Wood were intrigued to meet each other in the place where their

According to Niamh: “It really was the best feeling ever as it was our first Beauty Award so when I opened U Magazine and saw this, I was thrilled. It was a public vote so to think that enough people voted for us over Demalogica and Simple, two major brands was a great feeling. Soon after I received my U Magazine badge which we’ll be putting on the toner box very soon.” As if that wasn’t exciting enough, Holos then went on to scoop “1st runner-up” in two categories in the beaut.ie Beauty Awards for Love Your Skin Toner in the Best Toner category and Niamh’s own favourite Love Your Skin Anti-ageing Facial Oil in Best Facial Oil category. The toner is really popular because it is alcohol free and won’t dry one’s skin. It helps to reduce the appearance of thread veins also, and softens the skin. And the oil, according to Niamh, “is just a miracle in a bottle”,

families had spanned the generations. Jenny told the gathering about her extensive research into the history of the Prendergasts and thanked all who had been instrumental in helping her realise her own dream and the dreams of her dad that the family would one day return to the Castle. She had particular mention for Cathy Keane of Heritage Tours and Mary O’Higgins of Enniscorthy Castle for their tremendous interest and their assistance in making her dream a reality. She said that she was totally overwhelmed with the

Enniscorthy welcome and would be blogging it out to the world. She was so happy to finally be home and said that she would be joining the Rebel Army on Vinegar Hill on Sunday for the battle in honour of the memory of her grandfather X 5, John Prendergast, who was deported to Australia in the aftermath of 1798 for his part in the Rebellion. As this most interesting lady chatted and mingled beautiful music was provided by the medieval ladies Maura Flannery and Anne Gilpin with Pikemen and Redcoats joining in the revelry. – Maria Nolan

it replaces lost fat in the skin, locking in water and so plumping up the skin and smoothing out fine lines. It also contains anti-ageing blend of oils that balance pigmentation, bring down redness, reduce the appearance of age spots and scarring, aid hydration and reduce the appearance of wrinkles. Another wonderful honour came from Business and Finance magazine which, out

of the blue, invited Niamh to an event in the gorgeous Marker Hotel in Dublin where Holos was honoured with 99 other Irish companies as being 1 of the 100 fastest moving companies in Ireland. Niamh tells us that she “almost fell off the chair” when she got the call. We expect Niamh to be getting many more such calls in the future. n

A cross section of concerned Enniscorthy citizens have recently formed a new group – Vinegar Hill Environmental & Protection Group in opposition to the application for Planning Permission for the erection of 16 dwelling houses in the area. Their mission is to protect and safeguard Vinegar Hill as a heritage and historical site, a world renowned Enniscorthy and Wexford icon, a major tourist attraction and possibly a mass burial site. The latter will not be known until the planned archaeological survey is carried out but many people in the town of Enniscorthy and beyond believe that the bones of their ancestors who fought in the 1798 Rebellion could well be buried on the Hill. Vinegar Hill Environmental & Protection Group are registering their objection on two grounds: 1. Sustainable development/housing requirements with Enniscorthy Environs: As residents of Enniscorthy they are not convinced that additional housing requirements as proposed are justified until such time as the vacant and incomplete houses in the town are fully complete and

occupied (a survey of Unfinished Housing Estates in July 2012 found that there was a total of 11 unfinished housing developments within the plan area). 2. Impact on the Character & Historical Significance of the Vinegar Hill Battlefield: The importance of Vinegar Hill to the town of Enniscorthy and County Wexford cannot be overstated enough. Vinegar Hill is known across the world and the battle of Vinegar Hill and the Pikemen have become synonymous with Wexford and Ireland’s fight for freedom and indeed the cry ‘Remember Vinegar Hill’ reverberated in freedom fights around the globe. Vinegar Hill was one of the bloodiest battlefields in Irish history – 20,000 men, women and children faced 10,000 fully armed and well trained members of the Crown forces in a battle that lasted only four hours but left 1,500 dead and a county devastated. The vision that this group have for Vinegar Hill would be to see it re-developed as a battlefield creating a world class site that would encourage visitors to it and to the National 1798 Centre. Much has been written

Saving Vinegar Hill !

regarding the historic significance of Vinegar Hill and there is an ongoing programme to identify the extent of the battlefield, areas where intense fighting took place, the location of any temporary structures, weaponry, domestic ware, area of engagement and fighting and the possibility of mass graves – http://www.thejounal.ie/vinegar-hill-toundergo-archaeological-survey1292188-Feb2014/. The field patterns and lay-

out of ditches and stone walls are equally important and should be preserved. We have held four successful re-enactments of the Battle of Vinegar Hill over the past four years bringing over 5,000 visitors to the town, including English re-enactors who have never been to Ireland before, who have no Irish connections and who had never heard of Vinegar Hill prior to four years ago. As I said in this paper before these Englishmen

! !

have now learned Boolavogue and have sung it for us ‘to honour and respect those who died and to make amends for the mistakes of the past’. Isn’t that something in itself to be developed and encouraged. This wonderful historical site that has towered over our town for generations, that ran red with the blood of our ancestors is now bringing us together in a way that we never dreamed possible. Surely our duty as citizens

of Enniscorthy is to protect, honour, cherish and celebrate this iconic reminder of our past, this emblem of freedom, this treasure of tourism and pass it on intact to the generations who will come after us so that they too will know who they are and where they come from. Vinegar Hill Environmental and Protection Group have collected over 800 signatures and have lodged an objection to Wexford County Council. – Maria Nolan

Saoirse Dignam with her coach, Frankie Kirwan.

Saoirse with Enniscorthy’s Jack Morrissey, a previous medal winner in the European Junior Boxing Championships.

Saoirse was one of an 18strong team representing Ireland and the team brought home an incredible 9 medals – exceeded only by Russia and Turkey. Considering that Saoirse only took up boxing seriously less than two years ago she can undoubtedly look forward to even more success in the future.

Litter Crackdown on the way CRACKDOWN ON HOUSEHOLDS AND BUSINESSES WHICH FAIL TO PROPERLY DISPOSE OF THEIR WASTE

Honouring those who have gone before us is something that Enniscorthy is very good at – on the August Bank Holiday weekend we remembered and honoured those who had died on Vinegar Hill over 200 years ago and on 9th August we honoured our more recent dead at our annual Patron at St. Mary’s Cemetery. Once again St. Mary’s

We are told that a major clampdown is being planned by local authorities on businesses and households which fail to properly dispose of their waste. About time! The move comes as we are about to enter a new era of major changes to the waste industry coming into force next July, which includes a move to a pay-by-weight household charging system. It was planned to be introduced in July 2015 but the government has put it on hold until July next year.

resembled a hugely ornate and colourful Garden Centre as every family in the parish and beyond washed and cleaned and adorned their respective graves with fabulous floral tributes to their nearest and dearest passed on to their eternal reward. This long and lovely Wexford tradition is not only an opportunity to take time out at least once each year to

remember those who have gone before us, it is also a means of keeping our beautiful cemetery beautiful as families restore, repair and rejuvenate their family crypts with love and pride and it is also a unique occasion on the town’s annual calendar when we all come together as a community – past and present to remember who we are and where we have come from.

Well done, Paul

Ferns athlete, Paul Keane, won an incredible five medals in gymnastics at the recent Special Olympics World Summer Games. Paul’s impressive haul included a gold, three silvers, a bronze plus two ribbons. Paul won his gold medal on the parallel bars, his three silver medals on the rings, the high bar and the all round section of gymnastics, and a bronze on the pommel horse. He also won two ribbons for fourth-place finishes. Paul has been a dedicated member of the Special Olympics Club in Wexford for more than eight years and his medal haul is a fitting reward for all his hard work. The rainbow of colours, the cauldron of scents, the cacophony of greetings makes Enniscorthy Patron a wonderful celebration of the life of our town through the generations and brings us all together once every year to reminisce and to appreciate what we have and those who played a part in it. – Maria Nolan

Other changes includes fines for waste companies which fail to provide a high-quality service to customers, and a requirement that companies register customer details with local authorities to prevent illegal dumping and to ensure that waste is being properly disposed of. Will the registering of household details indicate households that have no collection service and what action, if any, will be taken if they cannot satisfactorily explain how they are disposing of their waste and rubbish. It appears to law-abiding households that more and more rubbish and waste is ending up on the sides of roadways and streets. God only knows what is being illegally dumped in out of the way areas. Apparently, Inspectors will use customers’ registration data held by bin companies to identify homeowners who may be illegally dumping rubbish, and can impose fines of up to €3,000. The Department of the Environment said the new measures require waste collectors and operators of facilities which accept waste directly to maintain a register of customers. Authorised officers from local authority environment departments will be able to request details of this register from operators. Local authority officers will be able to use the register to develop a comprehensive picture of who is using a collection service or depositing their waste at an unauthorised facility. Householders not on this register are implicitly not using any of the normal avenues of treatment, so the register is intended as a means of better targeting enforcement action against these householders. It is quite possible that similar to a lot of other laws that we enact in this country that the implementation of them leaves a lot to be desired. I hope that the powers that be are serious about the new waste legislation and that determined action will be taken against individuals and businesses who are despoiling our beautiful country. Heavy fines should be imposed and the offenders should be named and shamed. – Seán Doyle, Secretary/Treasurer enniscorthy Tidy Town Association

“A Fair Recovery is Possible”

L-R: Cllr Johnny Mythen, Cllr Anthony Kelly, Senator David Cullinane, Cllr Fionntán Ó Súilleabháin, Cllr Oisin O’Connell at the recent public meeting organised by Sinn Féin in The Presentation Centre, Enniscorthy.

“A Fair Recovery Is Possible“ was the theme for a wellattended public meeting on 12th August organised in The Presentation Centre, Enniscorthy, by local Sinn Féin councillor and general election candidate, Johnny Mythen. According to Cllr Mythen: “The main purpose of our fair recovery programme is to fire up a common conversation

about the way we want our communities and country to develop and progress, both now and into the future. “Our policies and aims offer an alternative to the inequality of austerity. Ireland should be a place where citizens feel secure, safe and above all are treated fairly and equally. “Sinn Fein believes that the continuation of bad and odious policies especially in

the areas of Health, Education, Social Welfare and Taxation are creating a two-tier, ruinous and erosional society. “We believe that human capital is the most precious asset a country possesses. Protecting our old-age pensioners living alone, our neighbours who have children with special needs, or our friends suffering from mental illnesses, or folks with long-

term sickness must be a priority. “The government are talking a lot about stability. Stability is not about a hierarchical society. Stability is not about future tax liabilities being at the same rate of interest payments. Stability cannot be based on Austerity. Stability and equilibrium can only be achieved by making sure a recovery is a Fair recovery for all citizens.” n

€34,000 to clean up Your Community – Wexford Your Post Office –

Fine Gael TD for Wexford, Minister Paul Kehoe, has said that €34,000 has been allocated to clean up Wexford as part of a €1.09 million funding allocation via two environmental grant schemes. “€22,000 is being allocated to Wexford under the 2015 AntiLitter & Anti-Graffiti Awareness Grant Scheme which allows them to support public education and awareness initiatives in relation to both litter and graffiti. There is a particular focus on voluntary initiatives involving schools, young people and community groups. “It is crucial that we support the many committed voluntary groups that do such great work in keeping our towns, villages and countryside clean. Graffiti and litter are the scourge of our society. We all should have the right to live in a clean well maintained environment and furthermore, it is crucial to ensure that the whole country is looking its best during peak tourist season. This fund supports small scale non-profit local environmental initiatives by communities, individuals and not-for-profit groups. As part of the arrangement for this fund, Wexford County Council will provide matching funding for the projects that, in previous years, have included community gardens, allotments and compost schemes, rainwater harvesting schemes, educational initiatives and environmental exhibitions. n

COMMUNITY SPORTS CLUBS PARTIAL ExEMPTION FROM COMMERCIAL RATES The Valuation Office is implementing the provisions of the Valuation (Amendment) Act 2015 in connection with Community Sports Clubs which means a partial exemption from commercial rates for those clubs registered under the Registration of Clubs (Ireland) Act, 1904. Those clubs will not be liable for commercial rates on buildings, or parts of buildings, used: exclusively for community sport and not for the generation of income, or to generate income from participants in community sport, or by community organisations that use the building or part of the building for community purposes. Buildings or parts of buildings, used for or in conjunction with the sale or consumption of alcohol or food, retail use or hire for profit are liable for rates. To avail of the rates reduction, clubs must complete and submit a ‘Revision Application for Community Sports Clubs’, with supporting documentation, to the Valuation Office on or before Tuesday Sept 15th 2015. Application forms and full details are available online at www.valoff.ie, email valuationservices@valoff.ie, or telephone 01 8171033. n

Caroline Foxe Postmistress at Foulkesmill Post Office has declared herself a candidate in the upcoming General Election. Caroline has served as Postmistress in Foulkesmill for the last 7 years and has worked in the Post Office for 14 years. Caroline is married, has one daughter and has lived in the parish of Clongeen all her life. Caroline is a community activist and has served on numerous local committees over the years. Caroline has decided to make a stand as a Post Office and community candidate to work on all community issues in Wexford. Caroline says: “The current threat to Post Offices is a result of Government policy encouraging people to receive Social Protection Payments by electronic means through other Financial Institutions rather than a transaction at the Post Office, while simultaneously not investing in an electronic banking option at Post Offices. “When a Post Office closes it is followed by other local business closures and the heart is torn out of the community. The Post Office is a key focal point and is the hub of the community. We have seen numerous closures of Post Offices in County Wexford, more recently Duncormick and Rathnure. These Post Offices could have been saved but were not put up for tender. This will happen

again in the not too distant future. “Repeated Governments have failed to place enough value on the real experience of how we live and where we live. I am a community and Post Office candidate seeking votes to enable me to become a voice for community in Dáil Éireann. “If elected I will work for stronger policy and more investment in each of the areas that make communities vibrant – schools, Garda stations, health services, transport and jobs. A key part of maintaining better services in our communities is having the Post Office as a front office for core public and commercial services in villages and towns in County Wexford – a trusted place where people can collect welfare, pay bills, cater for all mailing needs, do banking transactions and carry out a whole range of government and/or local authority business. I will be asking the people of Wexford to vote to save their Post Offices and keep their local communities alive." n

Wallace raises septic tank issues It’s not good enough that it will take over 200 years to inspect all the existing septic tanks in Wexford when half of them are faulty and our water table contaminates more and more by the day, Independent TD Mick Wallace told Minister for the Environment Alan Kelly recently. Deputy Wallace told the Dail that in Wexford, there are only two people to inspect 21,242 septic tanks and 4,369 individual treatment systems. 54 tanks were inspected in 2014 and Wexford County Council hoped to inspect 104 this year. He said the council needed more resources to inspect tanks and that it was outrageous that the water table continued to be poisoned, something he believed to be directly linked to the high rates of some cancers. Wallace called for further changes to the current risk-based inspection system saying at present people couldn’t request an inspection of their own tank if they suspected something was wrong with it, while third party complaints were being ignored. Furthermore, if a person was to take the proactive step of fixing their own tank they couldn’t apply for a grant retrospectively. The outspoken TD outlined the reasons why many older and modern septic tank systems are not fit for purpose. “Many tanks built in the early years — I built

Mick Wallace, TD. many of them — were built according to the planning conditions laid down and agreed by the local authority, but they were not right. We built many of the tanks incorrectly but we did not know at the time,” Wallace said. In relation to the modern raised-bed solution Deputy Wallace outlined that for this system to work good quality topsoil was required to remove bacteria from the water, and this topsoil had to be imported. However, many developers opted to use soil straight from the land rather than import the expensive topsoil. He said the practice was widespread during the boom and the result was our polluted water table. Minister for the Environment Alan Kelly acknowledged that Deputy Wallace had much direct evidence and knowledge of the subject and said he was open to changing the system. n

Sale of Garda stations– a raw deal – Browne The recent news that the government is selling two garda stations that it closed represents a raw deal for communities across Wexford, according to Fianna Fáil TD John Browne. Deputy Browne made the comments after it was revealed that the Government is to sell the former garda stations at Ballywilliam and Kiltealy. “This news represents yet another loss for these local communities. Their local garda stations have already been shut down, and now the building which was once a focal point of the community is being sold off in a fire sale auction,” said Deputy Browne. “When the Government closed these garda stations it was promised that they would be made available for use by the local community. Unfortunately this has not happened and now the Government is moving to put these buildings in private ownership. I find it extremely difficult to accept that the Government could find no other use for these buildings that could benefit the local community. “These buildings have been central to community life for decades, not only providing comfort and security to local residents, but also offering important ancillary services. The Government should have made

John Browne TD

every effort to ensure that the buildings are given back to the community and can remain at the heart of the community life. “The Government campaign of shutting local garda stations and dismantling community garda resources is fundamentally wrong. It is a further attack on rural communities, which have seen their local services cut right left and centre over the past two years. The closure of local garda stations, court houses, libraries, bank branches, credit unions, post offices and the clear lack of support for local based enterprise all amounts to a significant withdrawal of services from rural communities. Communities in Wexford will see the loss of their garda station buildings as yet another nail in the coffin for rural Ireland” said Deputy Browne. n

Cause for concern in Donohoes Enniscorthy h a r D wa r e

Cllr. Malcolm Byrne has recently highlighted that Enniscorthy and New Ross have among the worst air quality in Ireland. Cllr Byrne is calling for "moves to an all-island ban on the burning of smoky fuels in order to protect citizens' health following an investigation that found that Enniscorthy and New Ross were among the areas in Ireland with the most damaging levels of dangerous emissions, in excess of World Health Organisation guidelines. Four small areas around Enniscorthy town and two around New Ross town were found to have the most dangerous air quality in t h e R e p u b l i c o f I re l a n d . Enniscorthy Urban area was found to have the second most polluted air in the country." "A detailed analysis of air quality and the residential fuel market for the North South Ministerial Council has found that air in Enniscorthy emits 1211kg of dangerous particulate matter (PM10) per hectare. None of the areas where a smoky coal ban is in place feature in the top forty, including Wexford town."

Malcolm had sought a countywide ban on the burning of smoky fuels at Wexford County Council at the beginning of the year because of the health and environmental risks but now believes that such a measure will be inadequate and that there is a requirement that governments North and South of the border move to only permit the burning of smokeless fuels. Cllr Byrne states that: "It is estimated that over 1,200 people die annually from exposure to excessive particulate matter, particularly lung cancer and respiratory disease. It also contributes to cardiovascular disease." Malcolm tells us that he "met with Stafford Fuels in Co. Wexford who are moving toward smokeless and cleaner fuels and shares their concern that a countywide ban on smoky coal use would be ineffective as people could still buy the fuels in other counties and bring it in to Wexford." He added that "Staffords are an important business in the county and are working to address this problem." "Dirty fuel smuggling is also

still a problem, where cheap and dangerous fuels are sold by gangs that undercut legitimate sellers." Malcolm also said, "We need to act now to protect the lives and health of citizens. Poor air quality is partially responsible for asthma and other respiratory diseases as well as various cancers, especially lung cancer. The right to clean air is essential." He added that policy measures would have to be put in place to address potential issues of fuel poverty. "Currently, smokeless coals are slightly more expensive than smoky coals, even though they are far more efficient and give off more heat. We need to ensure that people can still heat their homes in an environmentally friendly way." n

From Colorado to Enniscorthy One of the most interesting new services which has started up recently in Enniscorthy is Crouch & Kirwan, Chartered Physiotherapists – the Crouch half of the partnership originating in the USA and the Kirwan half in Clonegal. Prior to their paths ever crossing both Bryan Crouch and Julie Kirwan had a deep rooted interest in the human body, health and fitness which led to Bryan studying Sports & Exercise Science at Colorado State University and Julie studying at the University of Limerick. Through dealing with various personal injuries/athletic niggles both began to explore the Physiotherapy aspect of health and well-being. Julie ended up in Slippery Rock grad school, Pennsylvania, playing on a soccer scholarship, Bryan tagged along with his Colorado friend Matt and that’s where the partnership story has its origins. Through three years of graduate school and clinical internships Brian and Julie became familiar with the science, anatomy, physiology, body mechanics and postural dysfunction while also becoming exposed to body movement patterns, tissue healing times, modalities and hands-on approach to healing. Following brief periods working in Chicago and Florida the pair settled in Colarado working for seven years for Physiotherapy Associates, the corporate giant of Physical

Fall in love with your furniture again. Create a distressed shabby-chic effect with Rust-Oleum Chalky Furniture Paint. Painting dated and second-hand pieces of furniture is one of this year’s big interior decorating trends. It gives furniture a new lease of life and provides a perfect means of adding colour and interest to a room – without spending lots of money. With Rust-Oleum Chalky Finish Furniture Paint it’s easy to update the appearance of any piece of furniture. Available in a range of 16 beautiful shades it dries to a soft, chalky, flat matt finish and is easy to apply. Painting furniture can be a great way to kick start the decoration of a room or a means of making an old piece match your new theme. It can be a piece of furniture whose appearance you’ve tired of, or maybe a bargain from a charity shop or online auction site. A sideboard for the lounge perhaps? A bedside table, wardrobe or maybe a kitchen table and chairs. Look beyond the current finish of your furniture and imagine how good it will look painted. Choosing the right colour for furniture is very important, of course. Beautifully coloured furniture can instantly lift the appearance of your home. Use whites and off-whites to create an elegant, classic look or provide standout against dark coloured backgrounds. Inject character and personality into pieces by choosing bold colours, which make a real state-

ment in a room. Combining colours adds further depth and interest.

Decide whether you want a block colour finish or a designer paint effect. An on-trend shabby chic look can be achieved by applying multiple layers of paint and using fine grit sandpaper and / or wire wool to give areas of the painted item a worn and distressed look. Either sand back to the original material or combine a couple of colours, sanding the top coat back to reveal the colour of the paint below. For a beautiful, vibrant effect use contrasting paint colours. After painting apply (optional) RustOleum Furniture Finishing Wax. This clear, water-repellent wax gives a soft lustre to the finished piece of furniture whilst adding a protective layer. The paint can be used directly onto wood (bare or painted), brick, stone, plaster or any suitably primed rigid surface (metal, plastic etc).

Water based with virtually no odour. Smooth, chalky matt finish. Highly concentrated. Exceptional coverage in one coat. No priming or sanding necessary on most surfaces (simply ensure surfaces are smooth, dry and free from contaminants). Works great over old paint and varnish. Available in 125ml and 750ml cans. Full range of Rust-Oleum chalky paint colours and finishing wax now available in store at J Donohoe Hardware. Therapy, and had a wonderful experience there, learning lots along the way, making full use of the continuing education courses offered through the company as well as external courses. Since graduation in 2007 their interests have expanded and they are no longer content to just help the specific body ache/pain. According to Bryan, “We have become to appreciate the effects of stress, sleeping habits, patient accountability, knowledge and nutrition on the body’s ability to heal and people’s perception of pain. We have come to realise that working a 40 hour week, with the expectation to see 60 patients a week, that these are difficult healing/well-being modifiers to affect. Helping people attain these changes was a goal but we had difficulty attaining these well-being standards at our own personal level.” After two years of contemplation and many hours of discussion they decided to make the move to Co. Wexford having travelled annually to Ireland to

visit Julie’s family. According to Julie, “We made the move to Ireland and with some market research we decided to commit to Enniscorthy to open our new Chartered Physiotherapy clinic. Bryan loves the historic feel to the town in addition to being situated on the river Slaney.” The new physiotherapy clinic is situated in the Abbey Square Shopping Centre, Enniscorthy, offering services such as trigger point dry needling, preventative knee injury screening, functional exercise in addition to hands-on manual therapy techniques and modalities. Conditions treated include: ● Back and neck pain ● Postoperative care ● Sports injuries and soft tissue injuries ● Degenerative diseases (i.e. osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis) ● Gait/running analysis and balance disorders. Dudes & Dolls at Debs It’s that time of the year again when Enniscorthy reverberates with the sound of expectation, exuberance and excitement as the Debs season comes into full swing. The town was pulsating on Tuesday 18th and Thursday 20th August with Colaiste Bride’s delightful Debutantes gathering at the Riverside Park Hotel and heading to Tulfarris in Wicklow for their Debs and CBS’s dashing Dudes assembling at The Bailey before leaving for The Red Cow, Dublin. The town becomes a clatter of activity and elation as mams, dads, siblings, aunts, uncles, grannies and granddads congregate in large numbers to marvel and admire the vitality, vivacity and style of both belles and beaus. Whether you are directly involved with party proceedings or not, one cannot help but be drawn into the magic and the mayhem that explodes on to our streets in a rainbow of colour and an orchestra of sound as the young debutantes meet and greet and complement each other and preen and strut and pose and pout for the multitude of photographs that will adorn walls, papers, family albums, phones and facebook for the coming weeks. ICONIC 1970s BRITISH ROCK BANDS‌ JIMMY MURPHY CONTINUES WITH PART 3 OF HIS LOOK AT‌ Jimmy Murphy

Black Sabbath!

Black Sabbath began work for their next album at Criteria Studios in Miami Florida, in June 1976. To expand their sound, the band added keyboard player Gerry Woodruffe, who also had appeared to a lesser extent on Sabotage. During the recording of Technical Ecstasy, Osbourne admits that he began losing interest in Black Sabbath and began to consider the possibility of working with other musicians. Recording of Technical Ecstasy was difficult, by the time the album was completed Osbourne was admitted to Stafford County Asylum in Britain. The album was released on the 25th September 1976 to mixed reviews, and later music critics gave the album less favourable retrospective reviews; two decades after its release All Music gave the album two stars, and noted that the band was “unravelling at an alarming rate. The album featured less of the doomy, ominous sound of the previous efforts, and incorporated more synthesisers and up tempo rock songs. Technical Ecstasy failed to reach the top fifty in the U.S. and was the band’s second

Ozzy Osbourne

consecutive release not to achieve platinum status, although it was later certified gold in 1997. The album included Dirty Women, which remains a live staple, as well as Ward’s first lead vocal on the song Its Alright. Touring in support of Technical Ecstasy began in November 1976, with openers Boston and Ted Nugent in the U.S. and completed in Europe with AC/DC in April 1977. In late 1977, while in rehearsal for their next album, and just days before the band was set to enter the studio, Osbourne abrubtly quit the band. Iommi called vocalist Dave Walker, a long time friend of the band, who had previously been a member of

Fleetwood Mac and Savoy Brown informing him that Osbourne had left the band. Walker who at the time was fronting a band called Mistress flew to Birmingham from California late 1977 to write material and rehearse with Black Sabbath. On the 8th of January 1978, Black Sabbath made their only live performance with Walker on vocals, playing an early version of the song Junior’s Eyes on the BBC Television programme Look-Hear. Walker later recalled that while in Birmingham he had bumped into Osbourne in a pub and came to the conclusion that Osbourne wasn’t fully committed to leaving the band. “The last Sabbath albums were just depressing for me, I was just doing it for the sake of what we could get out of the record company, just to get fat on beer and put a record out. Osbourne initially set out to form a solo project featuring ex-Dirty Tricks members John Frazer-Binnie, Terry Horbury, and Andy Bierne. As the new band were in rehearsals in January 1978, Osbourne had a change of heart and rejoined Black Sabbath. “Three days before

we were due to go into the studio Ozzy wanted to come back to the band, Iommi explained. “He wouldn’t sing any of the stuff we had written with Walker, so it made it very difficult. The band spent five months at Sounds Interchange Studios in Toronto, Canada writing and recording what would become Never Say Die. It took quite a long time. Iommi remembers the recording, “We were really drugged out, doing a lot of dope. We would go down to the sessions and have to pack up because we were too stoned. We would go back and sleep it off, and try again the next day. The album was released in September 1978, reaching number twelve in the UK, and number 96 in the U.S. Press response was unfavourable and did not improve over time with Eduardo Rivadavia of All Music stating two decades after its release that the album’s “unfocused songs perfectly reflected the band’s tense personal problems and drug abuse. The album featured the singles Never Say Die and Hard Road both of which cracked the top 40 in the UK. The band also made their second appearance on Top of the Pops, performing Never Say

Die. It took nearly 20 years for the album to be certified Gold in the U.S. Touring in support of Never Say Die began in May 1978 with openers Van Halen. Reviewers called the band’s performance tired and uninspired, a stark contrast to the youthful performance of Van Halen, who were touring the world for the first time. The band filmed a performance at the Hammersmith Odeon in June 1978, which was later released on DVD as Never Say Die. The final show of the tour, and Osbourne’s last appearance with the band was in Albuquerque, New Mexico on the 11th of December. Following the tour, the band returned to Los Angeles and again rented a house in Bel Air, where they spent nearly a year working on new material for the next album. The entire band were abusing drugs and alcohol, but Iommi says “Osbourne was on a totally different level altogether. The band would come up new song ideas but Ozzy showed little interest and would refuse to sing them. Pressure from the

record label and frustrations with Ozzy’s lack of input coming to a head, Iommi made the decision to fire Osbourne in 1979. Iommi believed the only options available were to fire Osbourne or break the band up completely. At the time Ozzy had come to an end, Iommi said, “We were all doing a lot of drugs, and Ozzy was getting so drunk at the time. We were supposed to be rehearsing and nothing was happening. It was like rehearse today – no we will do it tomorrow. It really got so bad that we didn’t do anything. It just fizzed out. Drummer Ward, who was close with Osbourne, was chosen by Tony to break the news to the singer on 27th April 1979. “I hope I was professional, I might not have been, actually. When I am drunk I am horrible, I am horrid, Ward said. “Alcohol was definitely one of the most damaging things to Black Sabbath. We were destined to destroy each other. The band were toxic, very toxic. Don’t forget to get your next issue of Slaney News for the continuation of the Black Sabbath story. n

It is full steam ahead for Enniscorthy Drama Group as rehearsals begin for our first one-act play – Come Along The Road Until You Stop Dead – a new play by Dublin born playwright Eoghan Rua Finn who now resides in Wexford. It is set in the Blackstairs Mountains and has Civil War connotations. Come Along The Road Until You Stop Dead is a story about ‘the weight of guilt, escaping a sorry past, and the legacy of one of the most tragic periods in Irish history.’ D i re c t e d b y J i m m y Kavanagh, with Ronan P Byrne, Fintan Kelly and Roisin Barry in the cast, this new production is one to watch out for and will be staged on 1st and 2nd October along with our second one-act – The Donahue Sisters – an unusual play exploring the darker aspects of sexuality and violence in three young girls and exposing the dangers in the supposedly secure, private, domestic space. Our Christmas play which will be staged in December is Dark of the Moon – set in the Appalachian Mountains and

based on the haunting folk ballad of Barbara Allen. This is a strange tale about a ‘witch boy’ who falls in love with the beautiful Barbara Allen. He is given human form to woo and marry her on the condition that she remains true to him – and therein lies the problem! Although not classified as a musical this play was originally billed as a ‘legend with music’ so local singers, dancers and musicians will be involved and local singer, songwriter Paul O’Reilly has taken on the role of musical performer for the production. With such variety of form and such diversity of type we hope that we will have something to suit everyone, audience and actors alike, as we look forward once again to bringing theatre back to the town of Enniscorthy and its environs. So remember the dates – our Box Office will be at The Presentation Centre and you can keep yourself informed by visiting our Facebook Page at ‘Enniscorthy Drama Group’. – Maria Nolan

The Blackstairs Blues Festival celebrated its 21st Birthday with the launch of this year’s festival brochure at Holohan’s Pub on Friday 21st August. Launched by founding member Sean Doyle who said that himself, Niall Wall and Paul Freeny of Heineken came together at Rackard’s Pub 21 years ago after the Ploughing Championship and decided that Enniscorthy needed a Blues Festival and the rest is history. Sean complemented this year’s Chairman John Murphy and Secretary Mairead Ennis for their trojan work along with Richie Cotter and Ibar Carty

and called on Enniscorthy District Chairman Paddy Kavanagh to say a few words saying that Paddy was well capable of singing the blues himself after a couple of pints of Heineken! Paddy too was lavish in his praise for the organising committee saying that it was amazing all the launches he attended in Enniscorthy over the summer for one festival or another and it was the same hard working faces at all of them. Paddy remembered many a good night over the past 21 years and looked forward with relish to this year’s Festival on 11th, 12th and 13th

September and its wonderful line-up of musical talent from around the globe. Sean then called on Paul Freeny of Heineken who said that both he and Heineken were delighted to be associated with this Festival from the very beginning saying that he had gone to great lengths that first year to get a large Heineken flag to fly over Enniscorthy Castle for the inaugural launch and was quite pleased with himself until a phone call came in on the Castle phone asking in no uncertain terms for it to be removed stating that ‘Irish patriots didn’t die so that a Dutch flag could fly over the Castle’.

You just can’t please all of the people all of the time… but certainly the launch of this year’s Festival was a major success and if the entertainment on the night by Los Gringos is anything to go by we are in for a feast of music over the threeday event with bands and performers from Ireland, Northern Ireland, Canada, the UK and the USA including Rusty Jacks, Undercover Kings, Los Gringos, Crow Black Chicken and much, much more! So remember nothing beats being there! Pick up your festival brochure and prepare to sing the Blues. – Maria Nolan

Food news…

This summer Ennniscorthy successfully hosted two major festivals both with a strong emphasis on food. First up was the Enniscorthy Strawberry, Culture & Food Fest which highighted locally produced food products fresh from the farm which are available at the weekly Country Market in the IFA Centre and the weekly Wexford Farmers Market in Abbey Square as well as hosting the All-Ireland Farmers Market which was won by Sharon Green, the Taste of We x f o r d S t r a w b e r r i e s Homecook & Chef Competition with Phelim Byrne which had a great response from local restaurants, and of course the two cooking demonstrations by Irish Chef of renown, Neven Maguire, as part of the Enniscorthy Show. The August bank holiday weekend Rockin’Food & Reenactment Festival had loads

of food related activity. On Saturday 1st August over 60 exhibitors showcased amazing local produce from Wexford and beyond. The culinary adventurists among us were able to munch our way around the world such was the variety of foods stalls and then wash it all down with locally produced craft beer and cider. The good news for food lovers is that next year’s festivals will build on their food content. It’s quite possible that the Strawberry, Culture & Food Festival may have a novel international dimension (more details in a future issue!) and the Rockin’Food Festival will be looking at running the incredibly successful food stalls on both the Saturday and Sunday of the August bank holiday weekend instead of just on the Saturday. All in all, food lovers can expect to have even more to look forward to in Enniscorthy in 2016. n

Food for thought… local Fine Gael Minister, Paul Kehoe TD, believes that Fine Gael in government has been a major force for good in the agri and agri-food sectors. “Fine Gael in Government has identified agriculture and agri-food as a key engine of economic growth. We have focused on opening up new markets for exports and working with farmers and producers to create new opportunities. “Under our EU Presidency in 2013 we helped to negotiate a new Common Agriculture Programme which provides €12.5 billion to Irish farmers. It includes changes to the single farm payment scheme with approximately 60,000 farmers receiving an increase in farm payments, benefiting the lowest paid. “We have tackled the issue of land transfer and made

Minister Paul Kehoe TD

farming more accessible through the most comprehensive reform of agri-taxation measures, to attract younger farmers and assist with the transfer of land. This year we began the rollout of a €4 billion Rural Development Programme, supporting rural communities. “Fine Gael in Government has overseen a 40% increase in food and beverage exports since 2009 supporting 170,000 jobs. The abolition of milk

quotas offers significant potential for increased production and 15,000 jobs over 5 years, although some concerns about price remain. “The Food Wise 2025 strategy, launched by Minister Simon Coveney, is a ten-year vision to grow the agri-food sector targeting an 85% increase in the value of exports to €19bn and an additional 23,000 jobs. “Fianna Fáil’s answer to challenging times for Irish agriculture was free cheese. Fine Gael is standing up for rural Ireland. We’re determined to spread the recovery throughout Ireland. Agri-food is thriving, tourism is rebounding strongly and we’re supporting small businesses and entrepreneurs. Fine Gael sees the agriculture sector as a tangible way to spread the economic recovery to Wexford.” n

Waterford Harvest Festival Chair, Paul Nolan (Business Development Manager of Dawn Meats) with young foodies Luca Fitzgerald (6) and Poppy Carter (5).

Warm welcome for Pat the Baker Government Chief Whip Paul Kehoe welcomed the news, on 10th August, of the purchase of the Irish Pride factory in Taghmon by Pat the Baker, securing up to 250 jobs in the area in the process. The news has come as a welcome boost to the local economy following on from the announcement that Irish Pride was going onto receivership in early June this year. Speaking just after the good news was announced, the Wexford TD said, “I called into the plant in Taghmon and spoke to Irish Pride management on the day that the receivership was announced back in June. The news had come as a blow, but management were determined to do everything in their

power to keep the plant open and were confident at that point that there would be a positive resolution to the receivership. The announcement this week has removed uncertainty surrounding the future of the plant and has come as a welcome relief to the local community. “Irish Pride is one of the biggest manufacturers of bread in Ireland, making 15,500 weekly deliveries all across the country, providing close to 250 jobs. The closure of the

plant would have been devastating for Taghmon and the wider community. “This is a significant investment into the community and a vote of confidence in the existing plant and workforce in a small rural area by a national brand. No doubt, the upcoming introduction of Natural Gas into Taghmon was an influencing factor in the decision by Pat the Baker in purchasing the plant.” Work has already started on the gas pipeline with gas expected to be available by the second half of 2016. The availability of Natural Gas could reduce energy bills by up to 60% and should massively increase Wexford’s attractiveness for investment. n

Waterford Harvest Festival is set to celebrate the region’s Food Pioneers… The South East has built a reputation as one of the country’s most progressive food producing regions. From farmers and growers, to restauranteurs, small producers and market leaders, all have put their stamp firmly on the international food landscape. Waterford Harvest Festival is a showcase for great people and their great food! The 7th Waterford Harvest Festival takes place throughout Waterford City from Friday, September 11th to Sunday, September 13th with something to suit all taste buds! Waterford City’s main thoroughfares will be transformed into a smorgasbord of flavours, aromas and heritage with festival markets, harvest kitchens, wine appreciation classes, junior food craft classes, celebrity cooking demonstrations and much more. Festival Chair, Paul Nolan, said the Festival will put a welldeserved spotlight on local Food Heroes. “Heroes is a pretty grand

term, but that is what they are! Waterford is enjoying a resurgent food movement and that is down to those who grow, cultivate, produce, create, serve and champion great local food.” Dermot Walsh of Walsh’s Bakehouse has been bringing the local traditional delicacy, the Blaa, not just to the people of Waterford, but overseas, since it was awarded coveted Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) status. Looking forward to this year’s Harvest Festival, Dermot said Waterford Harvest Festival is a great platform for local and regional food producers, growers and restaurants. “It is heartening to see food producers working together throughout the Festival to promote the food culture of Waterford and its surroundings. Not only is there a clear objective to develop the local food economy, there is an overwhelming passion by all involved to output high calibre, local produce, day in, day out.” Following the success of Harvest 2014 this year’s events

Good news for local tourism

Co. Wexford is the fourth most popular county in Ireland for domestic holidays with Kerry topping the poll as the favourite domestic holiday destination of Irish holiday makers for the third year in a row according to a survey from MyHome.ie. One in four of voters (24.5%) selected the ‘Kingdom’ as their favourite county for a break with Galway claiming second place on 17% and Cork taking third on 14% and Wexford fourth on 10% (up from 8.5% last year). More than 5,000 people took part in the survey which was carried out by MyHome.ie

Fine Gael TD for Wexford, Minister Paul Kehoe, has welcomed the results of the Growing Small Business Through online Trade report showing that SMEs which availed of the Government’s online Trading Voucher, are growing. “We know that 67 per cent of all of the new jobs created in Ireland are created by startups in their first five years of business so it is essential that we do everything we can to support these business and to drive them into the future. This is why Fine Gael launched the Standing Up for Small Business campaign and why the Government introduced the Online Trading Voucher. “The Growing Small Business Through Online Trade

Angela Keegan, Managing Director of MyHome.ie, said she hoped better weather in the coming weeks would encourage Irish people to continue holidaying in Ireland and to avail of the great value self catering options which are available. “It’s interesting to see that while Kerry is clearly the favourite holiday destination but when it comes down to where people are actually going the results are much closer. The popularity of Galway, Wexford and Clare has increased this year while the news is more mixed for Donegal, Waterford and Kilkenny.

“One interesting trend we see is the move towards more activity-focused holidays so counties which have more to offer in this respect will clearly perform well. With the weak Euro acting as a disincentive to travel outside the Eurozone Irish people were probably more inclined to opt for a ‘staycation’ this year which is good news for the domestic tourism market. We are seeing a marked increase in traffic to our holiday rental section as people opt for a late summer or autumnal break and this bodes well for the sector overall,” Ms Keegan concluded. n

report shows that over 70 per cent of small businesses that took part in the Government’s Tr a d i n g O n l i n e Vo u c h e r Scheme expect to recruit more staff. “ T h e Tr a d i n g O n l i n e Voucher Scheme was launched in 2014 to boost the number of small firms trading online. It offers small businesses a grant of up to €2,500, as well as training, mentoring and networking support to help them develop their online trading capability. “In Ireland, €700,000 is spent online every hour. That is a staggering statistic and we want Wexford businesses to benefit from this trend. “Some 225 companies received the Online Trading Vouchers and they have expe-

rienced a huge jump in enquiries and a 21 per cent increase in sales. The scheme is administered by Local Enterprise Offices and I would encourage any interested business owners in Wexford to get in touch. “ T h e O n l i n e Tr a d i n g Voucher has proven a great success for SMEs, but having consulted with local business through our Standing Up for Rural Ireland campaign, we know that one of the biggest issues is the need to standardise the tax treatment of the selfemployed and PAYE workers, as well as the need for continued reductions in the general tax burden. “Fine Gael TDs and Senators are working to ensure that these issues are addressed in the upcoming budget.” n

Free Parking – the way forward? In the uK, High Street Minister, Marcus Jones, has suggested that shoppers should be able to park for free in all town centres to save the high street from the rise of online shopping. He also called on councils to cut parking fines as councils are set to make a record Stg£687m in fines this year. Meanwhile shop owners in one Wales town saw sales jump by up to 50 per cent after all the parking machines in the city centre were broken in a vandal attack. THE MAIl oNlINE REPoRTS THAT: Marcus Jones, the minister for high streets, said councils need to do more in order to save shops from closure instead of punishing owners and motorists with 'over-zealous' fines. His comments come as it was revealed councils are on course to make a record £687million from charges this year, despite government warnings that fines should not be used to raise revenue. The government has called on councils to create free parking zones in town and city centres in order to help small businesses compete with the rise of online shopping. Speaking to The Telegraph,

Mr Jones said: 'Those areas [without parking meters] seem to be doing better and I think it's really important that councils understand that and develop their policies to make sure that they are attracting people to come and shop and frequent the high street. 'Unfair parking fines push up the cost of living and undermine high streets. Instead councils should be focusing their efforts on supporting our town centres and motorists, not by raising money through overzealous enforcement.'

Mr Jones' comments came after traders in the Welsh town of Cardigan reported a jump in sales of up to 50 per cent after all four parking machines in the town centre were broken. Shopkeepers were given the unexpected boost after vandals smashed the machines, and town officials could not find the £22,500 needed for repairs. Now they are urging town leaders to consider not replacing the machines in order to help them compete in an increasingly online marketplace.

Campaigners believe Cardigan’s experience could be replicated across the country to help counter the drop in the number of high street shops. The national total slumped by nearly 20,000 to just over 129,000 in only the last decade. Cafe owner Jane Roche said shoppers were taking advantage of the free parking to stay longer. ‘The town is much busier, with customers saying that it is really nice not to have to rush back to their cars,’ she said. Keith Davies, 64, former chairman of Cardigan Traders who has run a butcher’s shop there since 1978, said business was better than it had been in years. ‘We’ve long campaigned for free parking, and while we don’t condone the damage to the machines, the difference it’s made is unbelievable,’ he added. ‘Instead of going out of town to Tesco or Aldi, people can stay in the centre for five or six hours without having to pay or worry about getting a ticket. 'They can now go into shops then stop at a café or a restaurant without having to rush.’ n

Innovation at Whitfield

Jim Hughes, CEO of Innovate, with Brian Carberry, Project and I.C.T. Manager at Whitfield.

The Wexford I.T. and telecoms specialist company, Innovate, is probably best known to most people as the sponsor of the county GAA grounds in Wexford town, but in the world of technology Innovate is a rapidly expanding, award-winning technology company headed up by Wexford entrepreneur Jim Hughes. The company has just linked up with the Whitfield Clinic in Waterford which is investing approximately €250,000 in its I.T. infrastructure over the next three years. This investment is to be made in partnership with Innovate. Whitfield Clinic is an independent hospital situated on the outskirts of Waterford city. It provides elective surgery in most major specialities, as well

as diagnostic imaging and physiotherapy. By partnering with UPMC, Whitfield Clinic is also able to deliver cancer care. In order to improve the patient and visitor experience Whitfield has completely upgraded its wi-fi throughout the hospital. Visitors can now easily access the internet anywhere in the hospital and patients can keep in touch with friends and families during their stay. Whitfield chose Innovate to be its technology partner for the medium term. This will allow Whitfield to work in partnership on upgrading and improving the Whitfield IT infrastructure and continue to meet its commitment to high quality, patient centred care. Brian Carberry, Project and I.C.T. Manager at Whitfield was

impressed with Innovate’s understanding of their requirements, “It is so important for us to be offered a number of system solutions which are specifically designed for our unique requirements and match the exacting standards within Whitfield.” Jim Hughes, CEO of Innovate, emphasised the importance for a client such as Whitfield to retain continuity during installation, “For hospitals, all the information systems, procedures, theatre times, charging, admitting and discharging is handled via these systems. There can be no impact on patient care and the quality of patient care. The tailoring of the network and solution to the specific IT systems within the hospital environment means disruption is completely minimised. “ The investment will take another two years but the outcome will ensure long term benefits for the hospital, its staff, patients and visitors. It signifies the standard Whitfield demands throughout the hospital, a standard that provides the best patient care possible in the south east of Ireland. Leaving Cert Results… Congratulations to all the Leaving Cert classes of 2015. √ Enniscorthy Vocational College: Alan Fox, Michael O’Toole, and Ryan Murphy.

PEt APProvED

VET DIARY FOR SEPT. with the Moyne Veterinary Clinic

This month, Joe Kavanagh looks at how our four-legged friends can help us in times of crises.

ANIMALS AND CRISES Often when a crisis happens in our lives it makes us retreat either into ourselves or at least back away from public view. It's a time to reassess what's important in our lives, what really matters and what is just the dross that seemed significant but really isn't of any true relevance.

Enniscorthy Vocational College ® Jade Sludds and friend Stacey Farnan.

As we retreat it's often to our animals we default to. They're non judgemental, ever present and always seem to have that comforting presence. Maybe all we need then is just to sit with them, walk in the woods or on the beach.

√ Enniscorthy CBS: Ryan Hadley and Conor Byrne.

Days when we struggle to get out of bed it's the dogs that force us into the day. They've to be let out and fed and they give us that incentive to begin again even though every ounce of us is resisting. They sense when we're struggling and want to help. Their gentle manner just is enough to lift your heart when you're down, the quirky things they do that raises a smile on your jaded face, raises your spirit and helps bring you through that okay. Each day is a day closer to working through whatever challenge it is that each person can or will face in their lives. You can count on your four-legged friends to be there when you need them most.

Enniscorthy CBS ® John Sinnott and mam Margaret.

The old adage 'a friend in need is a friend indeed' is very true, so look after those little ones coz you never know when you'll be needing their expertise! n

A local contributor looks at life today in Enniscorthy and beyond Pic: ©Joseph Doyle

View from the Hill BRenDan howlin as promised some time ago i will continue to look at the performance and chances of re-election of our current tDs. last month Mick wallace was under scrutiny so this month it is the turn of Minister Brendan howlin. Brendan Howlin has been a T.D. for Wexford since 1987. During that time he has held many ministries such as Health, Environment and currently is the Minister for Public Expenditure and Reform. He is arguably the fourth most powerful person in the country. During his time as a TD he has always been high profile, whether in government or opposition, and

has been very vociferous on many issues national and local. For the purpose of this article his contribution to Wexford is what counts as the electorate of this constituency will, in the main, vote on that rather than national achievements. Only someone with their head deliberately buried in the sand would deny that the national economy has improved significantly over the tenure of the present government. The issue in the election at constituency level will centre not on that but on how the steps to achieve it were taken and the cost to individual families. It is patently obvious that despite the national picture many thousands of Wexford people are still facing hardship

through unemployment and unsustainable debt with very little relief on the horizon. Many of the decisions taken by the government in the interests of the economy directly resulted in the infliction of terrible pain on large sections of the electorate in Co. Wexford. It won’t be forgotten when people go out to vote that Brendan Howlin was one of the main decision makers over the past five years, therefore directly responsible for the discomfort caused to his own constituents. People will not accept that “ The government had to do this”. Individuals are concerned with what they or their children have in their pockets and not the national economy. At a local level Howlin, in fairness, has delivered on major projects throughout the county. New schools, such as the extension to the Wexford CBS, the new Loreto College on the outskirts of Wexford, the development of the new Garda Station in Wexford, the provision of finance for the Enniscorthy and New Ross bypasses and the A and E Department at Wexford General Hospital are all huge positives for both the county and his CV when it comes to election time. The question is, will any of that matter when people go out to vote? Or will they vote on what is in their pocket. The general feeling of deep resentment

Fine Gael are in government Wexford always gets at least one senior minister and sometimes two (remember Yates and Howlin) it is probably foolish not to take that into consideration when marking the card.

Minister Brendan Howlin TD

towards the Labour Party, because of all the broken promises foolishly made before the last election will have an effect on Howlin’s vote. On top of this he will have strong candidates such as Deirdre Wadding of People Before Profit and Independent Ger Carthy, the present Mayor of Wexford and the poll topper in the local elections, standing in his back yard of south Wexford. Also Sinn Fein’s Johnny Mythen is sure to get a solid vote, much of which will be a former Labour vote and this will add to Howlin’s woes. The question then is will he be re-elected? Doubtful right now I’d say unless something drastically changes between now and election day. Does he deserve to be reelected is the next question. On the basis of his record over 30 years I would say yes and bearing in mind that when Labour or

J.J. Doyle. Congratulations to J.J. Doyle on bringing Wexford’s under 21 hurlers to the All Ireland final. J.J. has a distinguished record as a manager and coach with his achievements with the Wexford Camogie teams over the years being legendary. We often hear the expression: “He or she has ‘IT’”, whatever “IT” is. Well when it comes to coaching J.J. has “IT” and plenty of “IT”. May his successful reign continue. RoaD RepaiRS Most people in the Enniscorthy area will by now be aware that the road from Blackstoops to Scarawalsh is being resurfaced. This operation is taking months rather than weeks and is no doubt costing millions. Am I the only one around who thinks that this resurfacing exercise is totally unnecessary and a waste of good money? Our money. This road was not a bad road by any means and certainly didn’t need such a total reconstruction. At the same time a lot of our county and secondary roads are literally falling apart. The reason for this is that

no money exists to repair or resurface them. The problem here is the format used by the government to allocate funds for these jobs. Grants are made available in certain categories with no flexibility allowed as to where the money is spent. In other words better to waste it doing unnecessary work rather than spend it sensibly where it’s needed. The establishment of such authorities as the National Roads Authority and the removal of the County Council’s jurisdiction over such roads adds to this problem. No wonder this country has a financial problem. Back to School Well it’s that time of year again as schools reopen and all our young people are back to study. At least I hope that’s what they will be doing. Reminds me of a smart alec pupil in my class, many years ago I hasten to add. One day this guy fell asleep in the class and the not too pleasant teacher roared at him, “What do you think you’re doing you fool?” My pal quickly recovered himself and said, “Just what you said sir.” “Explain yourself boy,” says teacher. “Well sir you said that we were to follow our dreams!” n

We are often asked: Who is the “View from the Hill” columnist? All we can say is that the author’s surname is NOT Doyle!

GOREY… Future of Gorey District hospital nursing home in doubt – Browne. Fianna Fáil TD for Wexford John Browne has raised concerns about the future of a number of State run nursing homes in the south east, including Gorey District Hospital. According to Deputy Browne, several nursing homes in the south east are under threat because there is no credible plan to ensure that they are brought up to scratch with HIQA accommodation standards. The Fianna Fáil TD has accused the Minister for Health of refusing to prioritise the upgrading of state run nursing homes, a decision which could result in the closure of a number of nursing homes including Gorey District Hospital. “The upgrading of nursing homes has not been given

priority status by Minister Varadkar, despite the very real prospect of mass bed closures. A red flag has been raised about Gorey District Hospital in particular. This 29-bed facility provides an invaluable service to older people in the area and its loss would have a serious impact on the community. All we need is a concerted effort from the Government and the HSE to ensure that that the facility can adhere to new accommodation standards. Unless these resources are provided, the facility could face closure. “I am calling on the Health Minister to set out exactly how he intends to bring Gorey District Hospital and other state run nursing homes up to standard. Any further delays will result in elderly people not having access to the care that they need within the community.” n

pearsons Brook / hollyfort Road, Gorey, accident on Saturday 15th august. According to local Sinn Féin councillor Fionntán Ó Súilleabháin, "Just like in the Garden City where a car was overturned in an accident a few months ago, I had been calling on Wexford County Council several times to make this dangerous area safer, but to no avail. Do we have to wait until someone gets seriously injured or killed before the council can make accident blackspots safer? “Since getting elected last year I've been acutely aware

25

of the farcical situation where the council is forced to operate off a shoestring budget and with skeletal level of staff, but are expected to deliver first world infrastructure. “Anyone who visits the continent during the summer will see how the roads infrastructure is miles ahead of Ireland and how badly our local government is resourced. “Ten million euro was slashed by the government's Local Government Fund to Wexford County Council last year. Politicians need to wake up and see that their regressive austerity cuts is costing lives." n

The other exhibits included the very popular art exhibition from local and national artists, with junior and senior sections in art, photography, short-story and writing competitions. There was a huge exhibition of crafts from patchwork to knitting and sewing, with many beautiful creations. The children’s section is regarded as especially important because it encourages young people to take an interest and get involved in gardening, cooking, and especially growing and the J Kavanagh Cup was awarded to Molly Butler Smyth, and Emma Tully winning the best exhibit in junior baking. Sharing top billing for the green fingers enthusiasts is the well-established flower section, with Winnie Connolly winning the ‘Rose of the Show’ and Best Floral Arrangement. Many of the entries drew gasps of admiration from spectators, with the beautiful displays and arrangements. The Home Produce section guaranteed many feasts for the eye in this ever-popular section with stiff competition in all classes. n

Making local history two irish female seakayakers have entered local history books by being the first to paddle around the island of ireland starting and finishing on the wexford shoreline. Wexford resident Susan Honan, and Sonja Ewen from Leitrim, departed from Carne Beach on June 7, and completed the circumnavigation at the same place on Wednesday, July 22. According to Sue Honan, who lives in Drinagh, “We decided to start at Carne because, with Carnsore Point not too far away, we had a window of good weather with which to paddle along the

south coast and reach Mizen Head before it changed for the worse.” Sonja Ewen reckons the total distance paddled was about 1,500km. It’s estimated that perhaps only six females had previously circumnavigated the island. Honan and Ewen have been using their circumnavigation to raise awareness of Headstrong, the national organisation working to change how Ireland thinks about young people’s mental health. So they’re asking people to make donations by texting GETACTIVE to 50300 or online at www. headstrong.ie n For more information on Susan and Sonja’s trip go to www.slinamhara.com

Caroline gets motoring AUDI Q7 revIew by Caroline Kidd

Audi Q7

Back in the early to mid-2000s, sales of big SUVs were booming. But audi, one of the world’s leading luxury car brands, did not have an SUV in their line-up. to rectify this, and compete with rivals like Mercedes-Benz and BMw, audi launched the Q7 back in 2006. But after a good start, austerity struck and sales of big SUVs fell off a cliff as people switched to smaller, more efficient cars, or just decided to hold onto the car they already had. But now Audi is back with an all-new Q7, and with 2015 looking like it will be the best year for new car sales here since 2008, Audi could have a luxury winner on their hands. The new Q7 looks more athletic than before, in an understated but elegant way, and has the kerb appeal that buyers want at this end of the market. Open the door, sit inside, and you have an interior very much fitting of a flagship luxury SUV – it’s a lesson in minimalism with clean lines, discreet buttons and a top notch quality look and feel.

There are three trim levels for the Irish market: SE, SE Business and S Line. The standard equipment list is long, and there is loads of technology, driver aids and other options, but some of the highlights are the MMI infotainment system and the virtual cockpit that is standard on SE Business and S Line - a full LCD screen that replaces traditional instrument dials behind the steering wheel. It’s a very impressive piece of kit indeed. The Q7 gets seven seats as standard for the Irish market and the two third-row seats can be moved up and down electrically. When in place, there is still 295 litres of boot space, about the same as what you will find in a supermini. With those third row seats stowed away there’s a massive 770 litres of space. Third-row leg room will be tight for adults but secondrow space is very good and you can slide each of the seats forwards independent of one another to give the passengers in the third row a bit more leg room. In terms of engines, the new Q7 is powered by a 3.0TDI diesel

with either 218bhp or 272bhp, or a 3.0TFSI petrol (333bhp), with the lower powered diesel expected for January 2016 deliveries. Both diesels fall into tax band C, with motor tax of €390 per year, however optional 21” alloy wheels push the car into tax band D (€570) when added, and slightly impact mpg (see car summary below). The big story with the new Q7 is the weight saving - Audi has shaved an amazing 325kg off the weight of the car, which reaps benefits in terms of overall agility and efficiency, and both diesels return near 50mpg. The Q7 puts its power to the road via an 8-speed Tiptronic automatic gearbox and famous Audi quattro four wheel drive (standard across Q7 range). There’s a drive select system as standard and you can toggle between efficiency, comfort, auto, dynamic, individual and offroad modes. I drove the 3.0TDI diesel (272bhp) at the launch of the Q7 a few weeks ago and the power delivery is smooth with the automatic gearbox changes gear slickly. The official 0-100km/h figure is 6.5 seconds for the 3.0TDI (272bhp),

Alcast Motor Factors makes large contribution to local charity… It’s great to see new businesses setting up in Enniscorthy and even better to see them making a huge contribution to the local community. This is the case with the recently opened Alcast Motor Factors in Clonhaston, on the outskirts of Enniscorthy. Alcast is making a significant contribution to the cost of the official launch of The Gerard Murphy Memorial Vintage and Classic Car Show & Road Run (all proceeds of which go to Console – the National Suicide Charity). Alcast will be hosting the event alongside its own official opening in Clonhaston on 19th September. The Gerard Murphy committee is delighted with the sponsorship from Alcast and according to a spokesperson, “We would like to say a very big thank you and welcome Alcast on board.” So put Sept 19th, 11am to 4pm, in your diary now to attend the official launch of Alcast Motor Factors and the Gerard Murphy Memorial Vintage and Classic Car Show & Road Run. Beat 102-103 will be broadcasting live from the launch day with the Beat Fleet; there will be lots of vintage and classic cars on display, refreshments will be available, face painting and entertainment for the kids thanks to the Beat Fleet, live music on the day with Stephen Murphy, and who knows maybe a few surprises in store, with plenty of spot prizes. The fabulous 1973 Mk1 Escort car (which is up for raffle) will be on display, and tickets will be on sale for the draw costing €10. Everyone welcome on the day, with plenty of free parking. Read more about The Gerard Murphy Memorial Vintage and Classic Car Show & Road Run on page 25.

and the Q7 feels every bit as fast as that, with a whopping 600Nm of torque available. It’s a luxury driving experience where all is serene in the cabin of the Audi Q7, with engine noise well suppressed, even under heavy acceleration. My test car was fitted with the optional adaptive air suspension

(€3,274), which is designed to improve comfort while also delivering on tauter handling. A quick look at the spec sheet for the car I was driving at the launch revealed a list price of €104,376 including over €15,000 of extras. But the Q7 is every inch the luxury SUV.

Model Tested: 3.0TDI 272 quattro Tiptronic S Line (21” wheels). Price: €89,190 (range starts at €72,125). Engine: 3.0-litre diesel. Power: 272bhp. 0-100km/h: 6.5 seconds. Economy: 45.6mpg (6.2/100km). CO2 Emissions: 163g/km. Motor Tax: €570 per year. n

re-eNACTMeNT NeWS enniscorthy’s re-enactors will mark, on 26th September 2015, the 100th anniversary of padraig pearse’s historic visit to enniscorthy on the 26th of September 1915 where he gave a speech to the assembled irish Volunteers at the Barley Field, enniscorthy. now exactly 100 years later this historic speech will be re-enacted for the first time in enniscorthy by the enniscorthy historic & Reenactment Society. Pearse can expect a guard of honour by the Irish Volunteers, Cumann na mBan and the IRB Flying Column. He will then give his speech to the assembled volunteers calling on them to partake in the Easter Rising in 1916. Pearse will be played by Enniscorthy Drama Group’s Fintan Kelly. Irish volunteers will assemble in the Market Square at 2pm and they will be examined in the guard of honour by Pearse at the Barley Field at 3pm. Spectators welcome. Enniscorthy’s re-enactment group honoured Wexford’s fallen at Newtown, Co. Kildare, recently. The group journeyed to Newtown to honour the 200 pikemen who marched to take part in the Battle of Ovidstown on the 19th of June 1798. They never came home. This was a sombre occasion as a wreath was laid and prayers were said

at the graveside of the fallen rebels. The group received such great hospitality from their hosts that they said they definitely would return next year as a mark of respect to the fallen. A gun salute was marked by four gunshots by the group’s musketeers Ray Murphy and Paul Earley. A similar gun salute was fired to honour the nurse that was killed by a pikeman while attending to an injured English soldier. Before she died the nurse said that water would always poor down the road and it did. 200 pikemen from Wexford lost their lives in the Battle of Ovidstown. In total 1,200 rebels lost their lives in the battle and 30 redcoats were also killed on the 19th of June 1798. Ovidstown is in Newtown, Co. Kildare. The next monthly meeting of the Enniscorthy Historic & Reenactment Society takes place on 2nd September at 7.30 pm in the 1798 Centre. The next reenactment is on the 26th of September at 3pm in the Barley Field, Enniscorthy, to mark Pearse’s visit to Enniscorthy 100 years ago. – Joseph Doyle History on our doorstep next month – the redcoats return – a look back at the Battle of Vinegar Hill.

Wexford Town News… WExFORd NATuRAl GAs PIPElINE Minister Paul Kehoe has welcomed the commencement of work on the new Wexford Natural Gas Pipeline. The 41km pipeline to Wexford town will be supplied from the Great Island gas pipeline which has recently been completed. There will be a 29km gas network within the town. It is expected that Natural Gas will be available to large customers in Wexford by the second half of 2016 and further rolled out to the rest of the town by the end of the year, bringing with it savings of up to 60% on energy bills.

Minister Kehoe said, “In addition, the availability of Natural Gas will increase Wexford’s attractiveness for investment, which is a key requirement for recovery. Wexford is in competition with every other large town in Ireland when seeking investment, so this will definitely provide a trump card for local development agencies, such as the IDA and Wexford County Council” The €16.5m infrastructure project from Gas Networks Ireland to bring gas to Wexford will be undertaken in 2 phases: the first will involve constructing a natural gas pipeline from the existing network at Campile to the edge of Wexford town and the second will be building out the network around the town. Local traffic management plans will be put in place along the affected routes and every effort will be made to minimise disruption. Crews will work in small sections at a time, with each section taking just a few days to complete limiting the disruption.

80s Movies by Emma Morris

the 80s is one of the best decades for film. with great action movies, classic horrors, and wonderfully cheesy romantic films, people are often very adamant about what their favourite movies of this decade are, and opinions often vary greatly from person to person. there's a definitive top 20 i would say, people like a lot of the same movies, but people have trouble picking out their favourite 5, and there's a lot of variation. Now I can't say I've seen all the greatest 80s movies, (I've yet to see Full Metal Jacket, or Blue Velvet) but I have seen a good portion of them, so I've decided to make a list of my top five 80s movies. I've also decided not to put any horror films on this list, because if I did there would be no other genre included on it. Maybe next time I'll make a top five 80s horror movie list. This list was really hard for me to narrow down, because there are so many amazing 80s movies, and it was extremely hard to pick just five movies. So here, in no particular order, are my top five 80s movies.

1. GhoStBUSteRS You can't have a movie list without at least one Bill Murray movie in it. And you can't have an 80s movie list that doesn't include Ghostbusters. A movie about three professors trying to make a living ridding New York City of poltergeists, Ghostbusters is still as timelessly funny today as it was 30 years ago. Staring Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Harold Ramis, Ernie Hudson and Sigourney Weaver, this movie is comedic gold. Murray's off-kilter improv is really the star of this movie. The acting in this movie is incredible, but watching Bill Murray just be Bill Murray on screen is one of the best features of this movie. Also, the Ghostbusters theme tune is a great karaoke song.

2. Die haRD I w a t c h D i e H a rd e v e r y Christmas. In my opinion, it's one of the best Christmas movies out there. Explosions, Bruce Willis playing the role of hardass cop John McClane and the wonderful Alan Rickman as the villain, Hans Gruber, it's definitely one of the best action movies of the decade. A group

of German terrorists taking over the Nakatomi Corporation, taking the employees as hostages, with a New York cop trapped inside, foiling their plans. A simple plot for an action movie, but great dialogue and acting add that something extra that makes it so well loved. Die Hard went on to spawn a franchise that has spanned nearly 30 years. And while the newer movies aren't all that great, people still go to see them because they are Die Hard movies.

3. the BReakFaSt clUB There has to be at least one cheesy feel-good movie in any 80s list. And while there are many cheesy feel-good 80s movies, The Breakfast Club is definitely one of my favourites. Written and directed by John Hughes, one of the most prominent script writers of the 80s, it's a simple film about a group of teenagers from different cliques attending detention on a Saturday, who, by the end of the film, have changed each others lives. While the story is simple enough, it has gone down through generations and is still as loved today as it was 30 years ago. John Hughes' films

are some of the best movies of the 80s and 90s, and it's no wonder that many of his movies are still enjoyed by new people today. Also, Don't You Forget About Me by Simple Minds is a classic tune.

4. GReMlinS I have loved Gremlins since I was a child. It's another one of those great Christmas movies, and its dark humour and adorable Mogwai are what make this movie a cult classic. Every time I see Gizmo onscreen the inevitable 'awwwwww' leaves my person. If I could have a fantasy pet from a movie, it would be Gizmo. Only I would take better care of him than Billy does. 'First of all, keep him out of the light, he hates bright light, especially sunlight, it'll kill him. Second, don't give him any water, not even to drink. But the most important rule, the rule you can never forget, no matter how much he cries, no matter how much he begs, never feed him after midnight.' Also the scene with the lady on the stair lift is comic GOLD. Gremlins 2 is also just as good as this one. Watch that too.

5. the pRinceSS BRiDe I saw this movie when I was really little, and I always remembered it. It took me years to find out what it was (this same thing happened to me with A Nightmare Before Christmas) and ever since it's been one of my favourite movies. I mean, who doesn't love a film that has Andre The Giant in it? A cheesy love story at heart, it is also surrounded by action, adventure, pirates, royalty, torture, Billy Crystal and some absolutely amazing dialogue. The supporting cast are what really make this film wonderful. Andre The Giant as Fezzik, Mandy Patinkin as Spaniard Inigo Montoya who is looking for his father's killer (his most famous line being 'My name is Inigo Montoya. You killed my father. Prepare to die!’) and a short appearance from Wallace Shawn as the cunning Sicilian Vizzini, along with a cameo from Billy Crystal as a healer, this is a very sweet film on the outside, with a brilliantly hilarious centre. Honourable mentions: Back to the Future, labyrinth, the Goonies and Ferris Bueller's Day off. n

The Gallant John-Joe at the CourtHouse Arts Centre The very talented Tom Hickey will be appearing as the Gallant John-Joe on the Courthouse stage, Tinahely, on saturday 5th sept at 8.30pm. Enniscorthy Re-enactors go to Hollywood hollywood county wicklow that is! Enniscorthy Historic & Re-enactment Group were delighted to be invited to be part of the pageantry at the 2015 Hollywood Fair at Hollywood, County Wicklow, on Saturday 15th August. In front of a large crowd in glorious sunshine Enniscorthy re-enactors joined with locals as both Redcoats and Pikemen for the pageant – the taking of arms from the house of Rev. William Porter in late March 1798, and for the pageant of the Redcoat raid on the house of local farmer John McDonald capturing his four sons, Kit, John, Harry and Tom and executing two of them Kit and John for their rebel activities while Harry and Tom manage to

escape, and for the final pageant - the surrender by Rebel Forces under Captain O`Reilly and Captain Cummins to the Earl of Charlemont and Captain Moore of the Crown Forces. Each pageant was carefully explained to the attentive audience by Narrator Paul Tutty and expertly executed by local actors wired for sound, and the sound system and delivery was excellent with the enthralled crowd hanging on every word of the little scenarios being performed. Enniscorthy could perhaps take on board some of these ideas for our own re-enactments as it does make for better entertainment and greater audience appreciation. And the crowd were delighted to show their appreciation for

all especially for the Enniscorthy involvement which swelled the Pikemen numbers and provided the firing power of the Redcoats. All in all a most enjoyable exercise and a most worthwhile one for the Enniscorthy group to be associated with as it gives us an opportunity to network with others and see what they are doing and it gives us a chance to become ambassadors for the town encouraging all to come and visit us. Nothing bad about that. Compliments to the Hollywood Fair Committee for their kind invitation and to the people of Hollywood who buy into the event completely adorning themselves and their children in pre 1950s attire. – Maria Nolan

Success stories for Focal tremendously exciting times for Focal, wexford literary Festival, as one of our authors, paul o’Brien, signs a fourbook deal with Skyhorse publishing llc in new york with agent tracy Brennan, and at the heart of the deal is the global rights for paul’s trilogy Blood red Turns Dollar green. Not bad for the Maudlintown man who by his own admission spent many of his schooldays shall we say ‘As lathair’! Paul and Tracy met at our very first FOCAL Festival in 2014 where Tracy - a well known American literary agent - as part of the Festival Programme - gave 10-minute slots of her very precious time to new and aspiring writers to pitch their short stories and/or novels to her. From those hurried and humble beginnings Tracy has gone on to sign with Enniscorthy writer Caroline Busher and Kildare writer Joan

Brady and is at present plying their manuscripts to publishing houses in the States. At our 2015 Focal Festival in June, Tracy attended our Open Mic event at the IFA Centre where once again new and aspiring writers were given an opportunity to read from their work in front of a live audience and lo and behold Tracy was once more impressed with a Wexford writer, Cat Black, whose crime novel `Hooked` is with Tracy being pitched to literary establishments Stateside. All amazing achievements for a Festival and a Festival Committee in its infancy. And along with all of the above we, as a Committee, are eagerly awaiting the launch of founding member Carmel Harrington’s third novel Every Time A Bell Rings due for release in November. Carmel has also recently signed another twobook deal with the

HarperCollins Publishing House. Simply wonderful success stories and we at Focal are delighted that the Festival is achieving exactly what it set out to achieve – the encouragement and promotion of local authors, poets and playwrights. As part of our ongoing Calendar of Events we are hosting an Open Mic Night at The Presentation Centre on 3rd October where once again aspiring writers, songwriters, poets, playwrights and actors are encouraged to come along and perform their work in front of a live audience. It promises to be a most entertaining event packed with local bards and scribes and MC’ed by Carmel Harrington and Caroline Busher. Tickets at €5 can be booked at the Presentation so please put the date in your diary and support and encourage local talent and creativity. – Maria Nolan

Michelle’s memoir ready to launch wexford writer, Michelle Dooley Mahon, has written her debut novel, a memoir about her life, and her mother who sadly passed away this year after a decade of alzheimers. Scourged - A Memoir has been on a crowd funding website called Fundit to achieve the finances needed to bring this story to a wider audience. Beginning in the 60's, the tandem narrative unravels the memories of life in a small Irish town – narrated by the Scourge of the title – Michelle – and her Mother Siobhán – in a series of flashbacks. It comprises sections of black comedy, nostalgia, memories and epiphanies that document the personalities, history, and archive of an ordinary family, who through the “bastard of a disease” that the Scourge calls "death by a thousand cuts" becomes cathartic, redemptive, and ultimately uplifting, as they become extraordinary in their ability to cope. It also shines a light on an

lettinG Go by Donal Cullen I broke my heart today, Never thought I had to pay letting go, letting go, is the hardest part. With no love in her heart I broke my heart today. Don’t look my way but look the other way; someone told me look inside. no love the other way, Letting go, Letting go don't break my part it cuts to the heart. I've been mighty told don't get to old, Look inside, Look inside, don't let go. Love will come looking anyway, not my way, you will pay by instant karma. Instant karma going, to get you, by the hand, and lead you to hell, I'm only sleeping with no broken heart letting go, letting go. n
