comment The national economic recovery may not have noticeably taken hold in the Enniscorthy region as yet but our readers can be assured there is plenty happening behind the scenes to encourage and facilitate local recovery… A new state-of-the-art Enniscorthy town website is nearing completion which will have comprehensive local content – shopping, leisure, events, entertainment, etc making it a superb, one-stop website for both tourists and locals alike. It is hoped to launch the site this side of Christmas. The Slaney News is delighted to be represented on the committee overseeing this major new development. On 24th September Enniscorthy Chamber and the Enniscorthy Business Association organised a successful fundraising Night at the Dogs to help finance the spectacular Christmas planned this year for the town which will benefit locals and visitors alike. Again the Slaney News is delighted to have played its part in the successful outcome through providing free advertising and social media publicity. On 28th September a LEADER Programme Consultation took place in Enniscorthy in the Riverside Park Hotel. LEADER supports Enterprise and Employment, Community Development and Social Inclusion. The programme will be worth over €9.8m to Co. Wexford between now and 2020. Bank of Ireland Enniscorthy held a free, social media workshop in its branch on 29th of September to help support local businesses market and boost themselves online. On 6th October (as we go to press) an economic briefing for businesses in the Enniscorthy region is scheduled to be hosted in the Riverside Park Hotel by the Economic Development & Enterprise Strategic Policy Committee of Wexford County Council in conjunction with Enniscorthy Municipal District and Enniscorthy Chamber. These are just some examples of the ongoing happenings in the background which will undoubtedly contribute to improved economic activity in the Enniscorthy region over the months and years ahead. – Frank Corcoran

Enniscorthy wins bronze medal Congratulations to all involved in securing a bronze medal for Enniscorthy in the National Tidy Towns Competition 2015 – a wonderful achievement. Enniscorthy scored a total of 293 marks out of a possible 450, this was five marks more than in 2014. The report is very positive in many places referring to “an ethos of enterprise and initiative” and stating that “Enniscorthy’s profile against the sky, rising up to the Castle, the Cathedral and St Mary’s Church is one of the most romantic in the country.”

As always, however, litter and tidiness is a problem and the town scored just 46 marks out of a possible 90 in that section. The conclusion of the inspector is upbeat: “A town of immense dignity and poise that really seems to have come to terms with the idea of a historic entity that is relevant to modern needs and trends. ‘So much to do!’ you are clearly saying – but you seem to be saying it with a sense of the possible and with a determined look to the future." Full details in our November issue. n

Irlen® comes to Ireland

L-R: Padraig O’Gorman (Enniscorthy Municipal District Manager), Jim McCauley (President Enniscorthy Rugby Club), David Shore (Captain, Enniscorthy 2nds), Paddy Kavanagh (Chairman, Enniscorthy Municipal District), Killian Lett (Captain Enniscorthy 1sts), Charlie Kavanagh and Dave Rafter (Enniscorthy Rugby Club).

Civic Reception for Enniscorthy Rugby Club A very enjoyable Civic Reception was held on 11th September to mark the outstanding success of Enniscorthy Rugby Club on the playing fields in 2015. Both Enniscorthy’s First and Second teams secured

Leinster Provincial Towns Cups in 2015 and the silverware was prominently displayed on the night by both team captains, David Shore and Killian Lett. Speakers at this most enjoyable sporting and social event included Cllr Paddy Kavanagh

(Chairman of Enniscorthy Municipal District) and Jim M c C a u l e y ( P re s i d e n t o f Enniscorthy Rugby Club). With the new season now underway let’s hope for similar success for Enniscorthy Rugby Club in 2016. n

Unearthing a Treasure Galway native now living and operating her own business in Enniscorthy, Cathy Keane recently made a most interesting discovery while doing some research on the location of Holy Wells in the county to incorporate into her very informative and thorough Heritage Bus Tours. Googling ‘Holy Wells’ Cathy stumbled across something called the Enniscorthy Penal Cross and began checking with locals for knowledge

of it. Information was sketchy and Cathy would have been stopped in her tracks had it not been for our excellent Library online service where she unearthed a document by Joseph Ranson CC on Penal Crosses in general and on the Enniscorthy Penal Cross in particular complete with photographs. Bingo! Cathy had struck gold but Cathy being Cathy wasn’t prepared to just leave it at that and contacted a man

Cathy is keen to stress “that it was the library service of Wexford that made this ‘discovery’ possible.”

who is known for his wealth of information about the town – Paddy Redmond of Urrin Valley who in turn got in touch with the County Archivist, Grainne Doran, who was more than surprised by the story and even more amazed when she was able to locate the very Cross amid the vast array of artefacts and objects in the County Archives. Paddy then asked a local craftsman, Tony Wolfe, to made a replica of the little wooden cross and from this replica it is hoped to make a mould and produce Enniscorthy Penal Crosses for sale to the general public. Another good news story for Enniscorthy and tremendous credit is due to Cathy Keane who is thrilled to have discovered first the story and then the Cross itself. And I would have to say that this is the story of an Enniscorthy Treasure unearthed by an Enniscorthy Treasure because since Cathy’s arrival in town she has been a wonderful and resouceful asset to the area and the community and her Heritage Bus Tours is putting Vinegar Hill, Enniscorthy and its environs on the map. Well done Cathy and we look forward to seeing lots of Enniscorthy Penal Crosses in the town in the near future and who knows what other town treasures will surface in the years ahead. – Maria Nolan

“What do you think of rosecoloured glasses?”, Anne Gilpin was once asked in 1990. She had vaguely heard about this in the remedial reading teachers’ group she attended and was aware that her Special Education lecturer, Dr. Paul Whiting, had conducted research on the use of coloured lenses as a solution for reading. Since then, she has learnt what an amazing, life-changing solution this can be. Today, it is called Irlen® after Helen Irlen, California, USA, who discovered the solution in 1983. Irlen® has come to Ireland. There are only four Irlen Screeners and one Diagnostician in Ireland. Anne Gilpin is one of the Screeners and is based in Enniscorthy. Anne firmly believes that for one in every two students

who has a reading problem, Irlen® is the solution. Anne tells us that she has looked at research over 30 years which has found that Irlen® can be a solution for not only children/ adults with reading and learning problems but for those who suffer from: • constant headaches and migraines for which medication does not help; • light-sensitive people, people who simply must wear sunglasses or who have trouble with night driving, and includes those with Autism (highly sensitive to light); • “clumsy” children/adults or those who are poor at sport; • 33% of those with Attention Disorder (ADDHD). • and lots more. Ever wondered: What is the matter with me? Anne

Gilpin may have the solution, and, if correct for you, she believes it will change your life – academically schoolchildren progress rapidly and many go from being confined to low level grades to excelling! People who were once disorganised, nervy, ‘a daydreamer’ become settled and organised. Would you like to know more? Can Irlen® change your life? Is it the answer to “what is wrong with me?” You can meet the Irlen® Team in the lobby of the IFA Centre, Millpark Road, Enniscorthy on Sunday 18th October any time between 3pm5.30pm. There is also a social dance to enjoy for €6 if you wish to stay longer! (see ad below). Irlen® Awareness Week runs from 19th – 23rd October 2015. You can read the research on www.irlen.ie or give Anne a call on 086 6655004. n

Tech Tip Java & JavaScript – Confused?

by DaviD pohluDek Ferns compuTer services

Almost everyone assumes that because JavaScript has “Java” in its name they are somehow related. However the evolution of the two languages took such wildly different paths that the common joke is that Java is to JavaScript as ham is to a hamster. Many programmers groan at this coupling and many even feel that the name confusion is part of a marketing gimmick. If we travelled back in time about five years or so, this would be a simple comparison: Java is a general purpose programming language, and JavaScript is used on websites to make them animated and interactive. Now that JavaScript has “grown up”, the comparison is much more complicated. Let’s take a look at some of their similarities and differences: Java code is typically written in an Integrated Development Environment (IDE) and compiled into bytecode. This bytecode is not readable by humans and any Java Virtual Machine (JVM) should be able to run it. JavaScript code is normally executed by a JavaScript engine in the same syntax in which it is written. Java is compiled before it can be run, so if there are any structural problems with code they become apparent very quickly. JavaScript is not compiled in the same way, so all bugs are found at runtime. JavaScript runs on most modern browsers, and most websites take advantage of this to enhance the user’s experience. Java applets can also run in a browser, but they have been declining in popularity for various reasons, including compatibility and security. It is reasonable to expect a website visitor to have JavaScript enabled and it is common for a website visitor to have Java applets disabled, especially with the proliferation of mobile browsers. n The Slaney News is delighted to have Ferns Computer Services on board with a new series of monthly tips. Ferns Computer Services has been in business in Ferns since May 2007. Established by David Pohludek, it has a huge clientele base all over Co. Wexford and beyond.

Yes, we are married and we love each other

Zena O’Brien tuning up for her gigs supporting chart-topper Ryan Sheridan.

on Friday 22 May Ireland came into the 21st century in style putting its best foot forward and voting in favour of the proposed 34th amendment of the Constitution regarding marriage equality. For those of us interested it passed with flying colours, well done Ireland on becoming the first country in the world to bring in same-sex marriage by popular vote. We are now all equal, male /female, whether you’re gay or straight we all look the same on the street. But what is gay, what is straight, I don't know, we should hold off on flags and putting our colours on masts. We all look the same and are very human, yes we

are all the same. I met with two very lovely ladies, Zena O’Brien and Louise O’Brien, both of these girls got married recently and are very much in love. They both came out when they were teens and have no regrets. Why not? said Louise, there’s nothing to be afraid of. There are so many young people out there still not out because maybe they are ashamed of their sexuality and, why, it’s another part of life. Zena is a singer-songwriter and I've been a fan of hers for a long time, I just love her videos and lyrics. Zena’s lyrics are very much influenced by her love for Louise, who by the way is a personal trainer and

Louise and Zena on their recent wedding day in White’s Hotel, Wexford.

indeed looks fit enough. Zena and Louise are very proud to be gay and married, and they say it’s ok to be gay. I asked them who is the husband and who is the wife, surprise surprise they are equal. Zena is currently touring with none other then Ryan Sheridan and enjoying every moment of it. Ryan is a real nice guy and is very helpful. Zena said when she and Louise met the first time their eyes met and they knew they were meant for each other and fell in love right away. Zena says, “We love who we are and our love has really had an effect on my music, it’s great.”

For Louise and Zena, family and friends are very important. Zena says, “We thought we would lose both when we came out and said we’re gay but no it didn't happen, they were happy for us.” I love both of these girls, meeting them was a pleasure, they are two of the most wonderful people I have ever met and I wish them luck in the future. 100 years ago An event was held on 26th September 2015 commemorating Pádraig Pearse’s historic visit to Enniscorthy on 26th Sept 2015, when he addressed the Irish Volunteers of Co. Wexford at the Barley Field. This recent event was addressed by Sean Doyle as follows: on the 26th September 1915 Pádraig Pearse addressed the assembled Irish Volunteers from all over the county at the Barley Field, not far from where we are meeting today. Almost seven months later, on Easter Monday, 24th April 1916 at 12.45pm, Pearse, from outside the General Post office in Sackville Street, Dublin, read out the Proclamation declaring Ireland a Republic on behalf of the ‘Provisional Government’. Thus began the 1916 Rising – one of the determining events in Irish history. Nine days later, Pearse was dead, at the age of thirty-six, executed by a British Firing Squad. Dr. Henry Goff’s book, Wexford has Risen, mentions another visit of Pádraig Pearse to Enniscorthy on Sunday, 1st March 1916, when he delivered an oration at the Robert Emmet Commemoration Concert in The Athenaeum and it was clear from his speech that armed rebellion was not far away. After the concert Pearse informed the Brigade Adjutant, Séamus Doyle, that the “Insurrection is near at hand and arranged a code with me to signify that the orders for the Rising were to be put in force”. Within 64 days of his Athenaeum speech Pearse was dead. The Irish Volunteers, Óglaig na hÉireann, were founded on 25th November 1913 in the Rotunda Rink, in Dublin. They were formed to reinforce the nationalist argument for Home Rule. Ulster Unionists had already formed the Ulster Volunteer Force in the same year to resist Home Rule. The Irish Volunteer numbers reached some 170,000. The Irish Volunteers were established in Enniscorthy in December 1913 by the O’Rahilly and Michael. J. Judge. With the commencement of World War 1 in 1914, John Redmond encouraged Volunteers to join the British Army and fight the cause of Empire, which resulted in a split in the Volunteer movement which came about in September 1914 when the vast majority of members left and formed the National Volunteers as they were called to distinguish them

from the Irish Volunteers. Of the new organisation, between 35,000 and 40,000 enlisted in the British Army and fought on foreign fields in the cause of a foreign power. The Irish Volunteers were greatly reduced in numbers – some sources give figures of 3,000 to 5,000 which had risen to 10,000 by 1916. No doubt when Pearse addressed the Irish Volunteers of County Wexford in the Barley Field in September 1915 the split in the Volunteers had a significant bearing on the attendance. Nonetheless, it is still remarkable that County Wexford took part in the Rising when the Irish Volunteers took over the Athenaeum in Enniscorthy as their Headquarters on Thursday morning, 27th April 1916. They held the town and surrounding areas until they officially surrendered at midnight on Sunday, 30th April/1st May. The surrender in Enniscorthy was inevitable after the surrender of the leaders of the Dublin Rising. The leaders of the Irish Volunteers certainly had a serious interest in Enniscorthy and County Wexford as indicated by the visits of the driving force of the leadership of the Rising who came to Enniscorthy in the months leading up to the historic event. With hindsight we can say that Enniscorthy and County Wexford did not disappoint them. It is fitting that we commemorate the address of Pádraig Pearse to the Volunteers one hundred years ago and no doubt his presence and words imbued his listeners with the necessary fervour to resist foreign rule in their country and that their efforts in no small way resulted in the freedom and democracy we benefit from today. Standing here ‘neath the shadow of Vinegar Hill, a short distance from the ecclesiastical settlement of Senan, and within sight of a building named after Thomas Weafer, a Shannon man, who lost his life in Sackville Street in 1916, we pledge to honour and commemorate the sacrifices of all who gave their all for the freedom of Ireland during the Centenary Year of the Rising in a dignified and open manner. n

Tribute to Browne Fianna Fáil leader, Micheál Martin TD, has paid tribute to Deputy John Browne following his announcement that he will retire at the next General Election. Deputy Martin commented, “On my own behalf and on behalf of the entire Fianna Fáil organisation, I want to thank John for his outstanding service in Dáil Éireann for the last 33 years. John has represented the people of Wexford with passion and unwavering commitment since 1982. He has served under three Taoisigh and has had an impressive impact upon public life. “John is a talented and dedicated representative who has worked tirelessly on behalf of communities across Wexford. His election to the Dáil in 1982, and his subsequent re-election in every General Election since then, is a testament to how hard he has worked down through the years and his status as a genuine community champion in the county. So too is the respect and affection in which he is held by colleagues on all sides of the political spectrum. “John has an impressive track record in public life which is clearly demonstrated by his service in a number of different offices. He served as Assistant Chief Whip, Minister of State in the Department of Agriculture and Food with special responsibility for Food Industry and Minister of State in the Department of Environment with special responsibility for

Environmental Protection. John also served as Minister of State in the Department of Communications, Marine and Natural Resources with his most recent appointment being Minister of State for Fisheries. John also served as Chairman of the Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and Marine. “Throughout his time in Dáil Éireann John continuously highlighted the strategic importance of the agricultural and fisheries industry. He has played an important role in developing the food industry in Ireland and ensuring it became a central part of Government economic policy. “I want to wish John all the best on what is a well deserved retirement. His presence in the Fianna Fáil parliamentary party will be greatly missed by his colleagues in the Dáil, Seanad and all the staff,” concluded Deputy Martin. n

Sinn Féin (SF) put forward a motion to Wexford County Council last month to reduce the Local Property Tax by 15%. SF believes this family home tax is a regressive tax and does not take into account the ability to pay. It says there are over 3,000 families in mortgage arrears in Wexford, a figure increasing by the month. To put an extra levy on these families is, according to SF, outrageous. To put a levy on people who have scrimped and saved for years to buy their own homes is of equal disdain, especially when the majority already have paid thousands back through various taxes and duties. Having listened carefully to the pre-budget statement, which was heavily in favour of the Local Property Tax, Cllr Johnny Mythen said, “The concept of no alternative way or accepting the fait accompli is not the way politics should work… To accept an €11.8 million cut in the local government grant without a challenge, as the local Fine Gael and Labour TDs have done, is not serving the people well. We put forward our alternative proposals, i.e. to call on the government to introduce a national wealth tax, like our European neighbours, to chase up the €11.5 million commercial rates along

with the €24.2 million unpaid development levies that's owed to Wexford County Council, and lastly to sell off some of the 2,500 acres of a land bank worth €53 million.” Cllr Mythen was disappointed that Fianna Fail rowed back on the statement they made at last year ’s budget meeting “to seek a significant decrease in the local property tax in 2015“. Sinn Féin's motion in favour of a 15% decrease in LPT was voted down by 24 votes to 6, with only the Sinn Féin C o u n c i l l o r s a n d D e i rd re Wadding voting in favour. Following the vote Wexford County Council released the following press release: Wexford County Council adopts 0% variation to Local Property Tax. Concern over funding of services influences decision. At a special meeting of Wexford County Council this afternoon, the Council decided to retain the 2016 Local Property Tax (LPT) at 2015 levels by adopting a 0% variation amid concerns that any reduction in the LPT would lead to a reduction in existing service levels and impact negatively on the Council’s overall financial position. Following the introduction of the Local Property Tax in 2012, each local authority has a statutory power to increase or decrease the rates of LPT

by up to 15%. The decision by Wexford County to adopt a 0% variation was taken today as the Council commenced the process of considering the 2016 Annual Budget. Head of Finance at Wexford County Council Ms. Annette O’Neill presented a comprehensive report to the Members setting out the various financial options and implications associated with possible decisions to increase or decrease Local Property Tax in the county. Speaking after the meeting, Ms. O’Neill said “The decision of the Members to retain the rate of LPT at 2015 levels is a reasonable position for the Council to take. It is vital that existing service levels are, at the very least, maint a i n e d a t c u r re n t l e v e l s . Reducing the LPT would have directly impacted on the ability of the Council to do this. In making their decision the Members carefully considered all aspects of potential increases and decreases and their decision, I believe, was based on a need to strike a balance between the impact on property owners and the overall financial impact on Council services.” In her presentation to the Members of Wexford County Council today, Ms. O’Neill pointed out that a reduction of 15% in LPT rates would reduce the Council’s income by approx €1.8m while the corresponding impact on approx 93% of the 62,800 reg-

Cllr Johnny Mythen

istered property owners in County Wexford would have been a reduction of €0.91 per week or less. LPT income to Wexford County Council amounts to approximately €11.9m per annum, representing more than one-eighth of the Council’s total annual income. The decision by Wexford County Council to adopt a 0% variation in the Local Property Tax will now form the backdrop to the Council’s 2016 Budget preparations. The Budget will be prepared over the coming weeks and will be considered in detail by Members of the Council at a Special Meeting in November. n

Surrounded by a large gathering of family, friends and colleagues at the Riverside Park Hotel Eamonn celebrated a working career of distinction and sterling service.

MC Paul Doran VI began proceedings by calling on speakers from the various groups represented at the event including Peter Murphy on behalf of the private veterinary practitioners from the county and beyond. Nicholas Morrissey DS represented Technical Staff at Department of Agriculture, Catherine Stafford spoke on behalf of the Department of Justice, Peter Griffin on behalf of the Department of Agriculture, Dublin, with Morgan Lyons SVI, John Cushen VI and Frank Ennett VI on behalf of all the veterinary inspectors, agri-

cultural officers and administration staff at the local Vinegar Hill District Veterinary Office. And each and every one of the speakers had the same thing to say about a man who believes that people and service are the two most important ingredients of any job. Eamonn McDonald was first of all a gentleman and secondly a boss. He was kind, courteous and gregarious with both staff and clients. His policy of always putting people first was commended time and again by all of the speakers along with his tremendous work ethic and his uncanny ability to always get the job done with the minimum of fuss and hassle. Eamonn ran an efficient and happy ship, as one speaker said that ‘he is the type of boss that everyone should have at least once in their working lives’. the accolades were expansive and genuine. When Eamonn was called on to speak he began by saying that he was humbled by the large number of people in attendance and thanked everyone for coming, his family and all those he worked with throughout his career both inside and outside the Department. Eamonn said that he had enjoyed all his years in Agriculture and had faced some very difficult times

with both BSE and Foot and Mouth but everything had been handled well due to the calibre of people he had working with him. He had always found people in the Department to be hard working, dedicated and genuinely interested in all aspects of agriculture in the county and beyond and had never had a problem motivating them to do their job. He paid tribute to all and wished them well and said that whilst he was

looking forward to his retirement he would miss the people he had worked with and thanked them and his family for the marvellous support he had always received from them. Presentations of appreciation were made to Eamonn by Brigit O`Brien VI and Frank Ennett VI and a bouquet of flowers was presented to his wife Sinead by Margaret Sinnott. – Maria Nolan

Laura Mullett is a top Irish Fashion Stylist and Journalist who styles Ireland’s hottest stars for TV and magazine spreads. The Enniscorthy native also works as a red carpet radio reporter for RTE, as a Personal Shopper and showcases all the latest beauty and fashion trends on her blog ‘Lipstick Gossip’. Laura will be giving her fashion tips monthly in the ‘Slaney News’. As we come into the throes of Autumn/Winter, it's normal to start tugging at last season's Winter wardrobe. We are now attempting to layer up and it can make you crave a wardrobe update. October whisked around the corner which means it really is time to get cracking! My style advice would be to invest in pieces that blend seamlessly in to your existing wardrobe. Soft knits, waterfall style cardis and colours such as oxblood rust, warm sand, muted grey and royal navy work with a lot of Irish complexions and won't drain your pallor but will suit it. The high street versus luxury brand debate can be navigated by finding the balance. Will the €30 version wash well? It's literally Winter 75% of the year here so by investing in staples, and washing and caring for them correctly, they can last you years upon years, so not only are you are saving money in the long haul but creating a capsule wardrobe in the process. Mixing pieces from Warehouse, Vila, New Look or Wallis can be complemented by going for pieces from www.mintvelvet.co.uk. You can shop their high quality winter wear online but it is also available in House of Fraser in Dundrum and there is also a Mint Velvet shop on their ground floor. They are loved for their minimalist design, flattering silhouettes, high quality textures and overall effortlessness. 'Abigail' skirt from 'Oasis'

My fashion tip for this season is Mint Velvet pieces layered on top (jumpers/cardigans/jackets) mixed with high street black denim skinny jeans (my favourites are the Amelie jeans

www.facebook.com/lauramullettstyle from River Island) and finished by a Clarks tan ankle boot and you have a look that you can break up and wear separately with your existing attire that is stylish. I would also recommend investing in the 'Abigail' skirt from 'Oasis'. It is the perfect light chocolate suede-look skirt that is an amazing length with dark tights to take you from day to night. n

ICONIC 1970s BRITISH ROCK BANDS… JIMMY MURPHY CONTINUES WITH PART 4 OF HIS LOOK AT…

Jimmy Murphy

Sharon Arden (later Sharon Osbourne), daughter of Black Sabbath manager Don Arden, suggested former Rainbow vocalist Ronnie James Dio to replace Ozzy in 1979. Don Arden was at this point still trying to convince Osbourne to rejoin the band, as he viewed the original line-up as the most profitable. Dio officially joined in June, and the band began writing their next album. With a notably different style from Osbourne’s , Dio’s addition to the band marked a change in Black Sabbath’s sound. They were totally different altogether as Iommi explains, “Not only voice wise, but attitude-wise. Ozzy was a great showman, but when Dio came in, it was a different attitude, a different voice and a different musical approach, as far as vocals. Dio would sing across the riff, where as Ozzy would follow the riff, like in the Iron Man. Ronnie came and gave us another angle on writing.” Geezer Butler temporarily left the band in September 1979

Black Sabbath! HEAVEN AND HELL AND MOB RULES for personal reasons. According to Dio, the band initially hired Craig Gruberon on bass to assist with writing the new album. Gruber was soon replaced by Geoff Nicholls of Quarts. The new line up returned to Criteria Studios in November to begin recording work, with Butler returning to the band in January 1980, and Nicholls moving to keyboards. Produced by Martin Birch, Heaven and Hell was released on 25th April 1980, to critical acclaim. Over a decade after its release Allmusic said of Heaven and Hell, “the album was one of Sabbath’s finest records, the sounds reborn and re-energised throughout.” Heaven and Hell peaked at number 9 in the UK charts, and number 28 in the U S, the bands highest charting album since Sabotage. The album eventually sold a million copies in the U.S., and the band embarked on an extensive world tour, making the first live appearance with Dio in Germany on 17th April 1980. The band toured the U.S.

throughout 1980 with Blue Oyster Cult on the Black and Blue tour, with a show at Nassau Coliseum in Uniondale. On the 26th July 1980, the band played to 75,000 fans at a sold-out concert at Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum with Journey, Cheap Trick, and Molly Hatchet. The next day, the band appeared at the 1980 Day on the Green at Oakland Coliseum. While on tour, the band’s former label in England issued a live album culled from a seven-year-old performance, titled Live at Last without any input from the band. The album reached number 5 on the British charts, and saw the re-release of Paranoid as a single. On the 18th August 1980, after a show in Minneapolis, Minnesota, Ward quit the band, saying of this time, “It was intolerable for me to get on the stage without Ozzy. I drank 24 hours a day, my alchoholism accelerated.” Geezer Butler stated after the show, “Ward came in drunk, talking about the things where he might as well be a Martian.

Ward then got angry, and decided to pack his things, and get on a bus to leave.” The group then brought in drummer Vinny Appice to replace Ward. The band completed the Heaven and Hell world tour in February 1981, and returned to the studio to begin work on their next album. Sabbath’s second studio album produced by Martin Birch and featuring Ronnie James Dio as vocalist. Mob Rules was released in October 1981, to be well received by fans, but less so by the critics. Rolling Stone reviewer J. D. Considine gave the album one star, claiming, “Mob Rules finds the band as dull-witted and flatulent as ever.” Like most of the band’s earlier work, time helped to improve the opinions of the music press, a decade after its release, Allmusic’s Eduardo Rivadavia called Mob Rules “a magnificent record. “ The album was certified gold and reached the top 20 in the U.K. charts. The album’s title track, The Mob Rules, which was recorded at John Lennon’s old house in

England, also featured in the 1981 animated film Heavy Metal, although the film version is an alternative take, and differs from the album version. Unhappy with the quality of 1980s Live at Last, the band recorded another live album titled Live Evil—during the Mob Rules world tour, across the United States in Dallas, San Antonio, and Seattle, in 1982. During the mixing process for the album, Iommi and Butler had a falling out with Dio. Misinformed by their then current mixing engineer, Iommi and Butler accused Dio of sneaking into the studio at night to raise the volume of his vocals. In addition, Dio was not satisfied with the pictures of him in the artwork. Dio says of this time, “Live Evil is when it all fell apart. Ronnie wanted to do more of his own thing, and the engineer we were using at the time in the studio didn’t know what to do, because Ronnie was telling

him one thing and we were telling him another. At the end of the day, we just said, that’s it the band is over. When it comes time for the vocal, nobody tells me what to do. Nobody. Because they are not as good as me, so I do what I want to do, I refuse to listen to Live Evil, because there are too many problems. If you look at the credits, the vocals and drums are listed off to the side. Open up the album and see how many pictures there are of Tony, and how many there are of me and Vinny.” Ronnie James Dio left Black Sabbath in November 1982 to start his own band, and took drummer Vinny Appice with him. Live Evil was released in January 1983, but was overshadowed by Ozzy Osbourne’s platinum selling album Speak of the Devil. Brooklyn Enniscorthy premiere Stars of both stage and screen will converge on Enniscorthy on Wednesday October 28th for the Wexford premiere of ‘Brooklyn’, the film adaptation of Colm Toibin’s best-selling novel of the same name. Enniscorthy has been chosen by the film distributors, Lionsgate U.K., to host the first public screening of ‘Brooklyn’, after its national premiere in Dublin, because of Mr. Toibin’s strong associations with the town and also because much of the movie’s content was filmed in Enniscorthy. Wexford County Council and Lionsgate U.K. will jointly host the premiere in Enniscorthy’s Riverside Park Hotel, the ballroom and reception area of which will be transformed into a magnificent cinematic auditorium for the Wexford premiere complete with tiered seating, cinematic screen and lighting and wraparound sound system. GFD Conferencing, Dublin, has been contracted by Enniscorthy District Manager, Padraig

O’Gorman, to technically and visually transform the transmission area into an cinematic auditorium worthy of hosting such a prestigeous event. Saoirse Ronan who plays the lead role of ‘Eilis’ in ‘Brooklyn’ has already confirmed her attendance at the Enniscorthy premiere where she will be joined by the book’s author, Colm Toibin, who is flying in from New York for the event. An Taoiseach Enda Kenny, A r t s M i n i s t e r, H e a t h e r Humphreys, Public Expenditure Minister, Brendan Howlin and Government Chief Whip, Paul Kehoe, are all expected to attend. Adapted from Colm Toibin’s international bestseller by Nick Hornby (Oscar nominee for ‘An Education’) and directed by John Crowley (‘Intermission’, ‘Boy A’) 'Brooklyn’ is produced by Finola Dwyer and Amanda Posey (‘Quartet’, Oscar nominees for ‘An Education’). The film is set in the early 1950s and tells the story of a young

Young local stars Conor Sinnott and Ben Kavanagh appeared as wedding guests in Brooklyn.

woman, ‘Eilis’ (Saoirse Ronan), who moves from small town Ireland to Brooklyn, New York, where she has an opportunity for a future – and love, in the shape of Italian American ‘Tony’ (Emory Cohen). When a family tragedy brings her back to Ireland, she finds herself absorbed into her old community, but now with eligible ’Jim’ (Domhnall Gleeson) courting her. As a result, ‘Eilis’ finds herself confronting a terrible dilemma – a heartbreaking choice between two men and two countries. The Enniscorthy screening will be preceded by a blacktie champagne reception, hosted by J. Donohoe Beverages Ltd., and a drinks reception hosted by Diagio (Ireland) Ltd., which will be attended by the film’s leading stars and representatives of both Lionsgate U.K. and Wexford County Council, along with Mr. Toibin and other invited guests.

Due to the huge numbers who unsuccessfully sought tickets for the premiere, a second showing later on the 28th has now been organised. The Wexford premiere is designed to acknowledge Colm Toibin’s contribution to the written word and which has made him a household name throughout the English speaking world. The premiere provides Wexford County Council and Lionsgate U.K. with an ideal opportunity to acknowledge the work of this Enniscorthy born author, while at the same time allowing the people of the town and district an opportunity of expressing their appreciation of an artist who has very firmly placed Enniscorthy at the centre of the literary stage. Lionsgate U.K. have announced that ‘Brooklyn’ will go on national release throughout Ireland on November 6th. n

EMS chooses Seussical the Musical Enniscorthy Musical Society (EMS) is delighted to have chosen Seussical the Musical as its show for 2016. Seussical is based on the works of Dr. Seuss and weaves together his most famous tales and characters from at least fifteen of his books. The show follows the adventures of Horton, an elephant who one day hears voices coming from a speck of dust. He soon discovers that within this tiny speck exists the smallest planet in the universe! On this tiny planet live a tiny race of creatures known as Whos. Although ridiculed by the other animals in the Jungle of Nool for believing in something he cannot see, Horton stubbornly persists in his belief that the Whos exist. Traveling everywhere from the Jungle of Nool to McEligott’s Pool, some of the characters

fall in love, some have desperate adventures, and some even save the world. EMS is also delighted that Paul Walsh is joining the production team. Paul is well known to local audiences through his work with Oyster Lane in Wexford town as well

as on the drama circuit but this will be his first time working with EMS. He is a lifelong Dr. Seuss fan and has lots of great ideas for the show. He will be working alongside EMS regulars: Musical Director Kevin Kennedy and Choreographer Anne Marie Cooney. n

Local theatre lovers will be delighted to hear that on Friday 16th and Saturday 17th October drama will return to The Presentation Centre as Ennsicorthy Drama Group takes to the stage with two OneAct plays. Come Along The Road Until You Stop Dead – now there’s an unusual title for a play and having seen some of the rehearsals I can confirm that the play is every bit as unusual as its title! A new play by Dublin born playwright Eoghan Rua Finn who now resides in Wexford, Come Along The Road Until You Stop Dead is set in the Blackstairs Mountains and has Civil War connotations. It is a passionate play about “the weight of guilt, escaping a sorry past, and the legacy of one of the most tragic periods in Irish history”. An intriguing story directed by the talented Jimmy Kavanagh with Ronan P Byrne, Fintan Kelly and Roisin Barry this is a powerful production that we hope will do well for

Enniscorthy Drama on the OneAct Circuit in late October. The Donahue Sisters – our second one-act could also be described as an unusual play exploring the darker aspects of sexuality and violence in three young girls and exposing the dangers in the supposedly secure private domestic space. The Donahue Sisters – played by Annemarie Whelan, Greta Carley and Gemma Delaney is set in the attic of their childhood home as the sisters come together to await the death of their father and relive their unhappy childhood including a rather bizarre and sinister incident from their past. Yet another powerful and intriguing tale. The Donahue Sisters is written by Galway native Geraldine A ro n a n d d i re c t e d b y Annemarie Whelan. Both of these productions are explosive and we can promise to have you on the edge of your seats with twists and turns and robust performances. So put

Only a handful of these unique and legendary “halls of mirrors” are left in the world today, each with its own unique personality and style. The beautiful circular venues feature intimate booths, ornate bars and Art Nouveau chandeliers. Since Marlene Dietrich sang “Falling in Love Again” on the stage in the 1930s, their magic mirrors have reflected thousands of artists, audiences and exotic gatherings.

The dress called ‘Made in China’ was originally made by the students for the national competition Junk Kouture. While researching unusual dresses to exhibit at the Ireland’s Wedding Journal show, the team came across Kate, Bozanna and Emma’s creation. The dress was one of only three dresses selected nationwide to be displayed at the show. The student’s dress took four and a half months to make. It is made from old fabric, net curtains, plaster of Paris, a willow patterned tea-set donated by Stella - the school's 'tea-lady'! The china tea-set was partly the inspiration for the piece as well as Downton Abbey and Alexander McQueen designs. Alice J Kelly Millinery in Blackwater in Co. Wexford offered advice on how to make the head-piece. Wedding Journal magazine editor Tara Craig said: “The Wedding Journal show is known for showcasing wellknown fashion designers’ dresses and we wanted to provide a platform for students to showcase their designs also. After researching unusual wedding dresses to display at the Wedding Journal Show we chose only three dresses; one of which was made by the Coláiste Bríde students. Made in China is a real showstopper and we loved the fact it was made entirely from recycled material so it’s environmental friendly also.”

Bank of Ireland Enniscorthy hosts social media workshop The Enniscorthy branch of Bank of ireland hosted a successful social media educational evening for local businesses on 29th September. Branch Manager Helena Kirwan, Digital Customer Advisor James Foley and Direct Relationship Manager Paula Connellan welcomed all before the presentation began. Paula delivered key notes on how to post as a business, what to avoid, different platforms and why all businesses should evolve with social media particularly as we learned that ‘more people own a mobile phone than a toothbrush’. A shocking fact! Bank of Ireland say they are changing with the times and with their customers by keeping in touch on Facebook, Twitter, Linkedin and other popular social platforms. And on the subject of Social Media why not follow Slaney News on Facebook at: “Slaney News”. – Dwane Doran

Successful festival fundraiser Enniscorthy & District Chamber and Enniscorthy Business Association in association with Wexford County Council recently held a major, joint fundraiser for Enniscorthy’s upcoming Christmas Festival 2015. The fundraising event took place on 24th September at Enniscorthy Dog Track. The huge crowd on the night was treated to a wonderful evening of racing as well as a tasty BBQ which was included in the reasonably priced €15 admission charge. Great credit is due to the management and staff at the track for facilitating the organising committee. The funds raised will help with the Christmas festivities in Enniscorthy including a wonderful extravaganza planned for Enniscorthy Castle which will make the castle one of the top Christmas attractions in the South East. The financial success of the night was helped enormously by the very kind sponsorship provided by the Riverside Park Hotel. The hotel’s owner, Colm Neville, expressed his delight at being able to assist with bringing extra festivity to the town this December.

South East Action Plan for Jobs Does your business need a lift ?

Wexford County Council welcomed the launch last month of the Government’s South East Action Plan for Jobs. The new South East Plan covers counties Carlow, K i l k e n n y, Ti p p e r a r y, Waterford and Wexford, and targets job creation in key sectors including agri-food, tourism, life sciences, manufacturing, retail and financial services/business services. The Plan identifies 194 actions to be delivered over the period 2015-2017, with a range of initiatives including supports for startups, pursuit of multinational investment, a campaign to encourage Dublin-based MNCs to establish satellite offices in the South East, and a ‘quality of life’ campaign marketing the South East as a good place to live and work. Supports aimed at growing jobs in the Manufacturing, Engineering, Agrifood, Business Services, Pharma / Medtech, Tourism and Retail sectors are included, while a Regional Skills Forum is planned to promote closer cooperation between employ-

ers and training/education bodies. The Plan also emphasises the need to progress the development of a Technological University for the South East and also seeks to boost the number of apprenticeships in the region. Cathaoirleach of Wexford County Council, Councillor Tony Dempsey, welcomed the launch of the South East Action Plan for Jobs. “I welcome a regional emphasis on job creation as an integral part of the government’s overall jobs strategy and look forward to the actions and targets of the South East Jobs Plan bearing further fruit, especially here in County Wexford” said

Councillor Dempsey. “While jobs are growing right across the country, it is clear they are growing faster in some regions than in others. Each region has its own particular challenges and opportunities and that is why actions and supports must be put in place within each region that are specifically tailored to meet those challenges and exploit those opportunities” added Councillor Dempsey. Director of Economic Development and Planning Services at Wexford County Council, Mr. Tony Larkin, attended the launch of the Action Plan in Waterford. “This Plan will further build on the strong track record of job creation that has been achieved in County Wexford to date” said Mr. Larkin. “Wexford County Council will continue to play its part in supporting that track record of success by ensuring that the necessary land, infrastructure and enterprise supports are in place to further generate economic growth, boost investor confidence and create jobs”. n

Construction jobs on the rise Fine Gael TD for Wexford, Minister Paul Kehoe, has welcomed recent figures which show an increase of 18.5% in the number of jobs in the construction sector since this time last year. “The latest CSO figures show that 126,000 people are now employed in the construction sector, that’s an increase of almost 20,000 in twelve months. These are national figures but the jobs are distributed across the country, including here in Wexford. “… A healthy economy must have a vibrant and sustainable construction sector.

The number of planning permissions in the first quarter of 2015 has increased by 97% when compared to the same period in 2014. “In Wexford we have many highly skilled construction workers who for too many years have struggled to find work. We have also lost many to emigration due to the property-fuelled bubble propped up by the previous government. 1,500 attend Wexford Business Expo The 2015 Wexford Business Expo delivered a strong message that the county is a serious place in which to do business. “With over 1,500 attendees interacting with almost 100 exhibiting businesses, the amount of business that was generated on the day was very impressive” said Martin Doyle, President o f We x f o r d C h a m b e r. Referring to Wexford County Hall, where the event took place on 10th September, he added, “The state of the art venue was ideal for an event of this scale, a sentiment which was shared by both exhibitors and attendees.“ Based on the theme of Capitalising on the Recovery, attendees were able to participate in interactive workshops with leading entrepreneurs across a broad spectrum of sectors and to access practical advice that could aid their company's specific growth objectives. One of the many highlights of the event was the 'Angels' Den', which saw three high-potential start-up businesses pitch for investment in

front of a panel of Business Angels. The keynote speaker at the event was the Wexford born genius and founder of Scorpion Computer Services, Walter O’ Brien. Walter spoke about the the highly successful Scorpion TV show and then focused on how the world is changing. From self-driving cars to the impending release of Oculus Rift, virtual reality technology, Walter provided us with an insight into what the future will look like. Walter was presented with a We x f o r d C h a m b e r ‘Outstanding Achievement’ Award by Karl Fitzpatrick, Vice President of Wexford Chamber. The award was a beautifully crafted 1916 commemorative pin, which was produced by Martin's Jewellers of Rowe Street, Wexford. The limited edition pin was number 197, which happens to be Walter’s IQ. Speaking after the event, Madeleine Quirke, CEO Wexford Chamber, said “It is now up to businesses and visitors to take our enthusiasm away with them

Re-enactment news… PET APPRovEd

VET DIARY FOR OCT. with the Moyne Veterinary Clinic

This month, Joe Kavanagh looks at a number of important and topical pet issues at this time of year. The Autumnal air has arrived… that bit of a chill in the mornings and evenings. Each season brings its own challenges and its own magic too. The colours of the trees, harvested fields and melded mesh of amber to gold, all a celebration of Nature's bounty. With this comes challenges too. It's from now on that the number of dogs presenting to us with leptospirosis (jaundice as it's commonly known) will escalate. This is because this particular organism, a spirocite, is activated by the cold. It is commonly spread by rats and has the highest zoonosis of any disease, that is it is the disease most commonly spread from animal to humans. The unfortunate part about most of the cases of this disease that present to us is that it can be so easily prevented. An initial vaccination programme must always include two innoculations of Leptospira at least two weeks apart, followed by a booster vaccine once a year. Of all the diseases that we vaccinate for, this particular disease is very difficult to treat but is very easily prevented. If your dog is overdue their initial or boosters don't put it on the long finger. Now is the right time.

Yet another extremely busy period for Enniscorthy Historic & Re-enactment Society as they recently travelled to Newtown, Co. Kildare, to commemorate the Battle of Ovidstown on 19th June 1798 where approximately 200 Wexford Pikemen lost their lives. The people of Newtown presented Enniscorthy’s Rory O’Connor with a beautiful piece of Bog Oak to mark the occasion. The Enniscorthy re-enactors were at Ferns Castle for the end of Heritage Week adding colour and pageantry to the tours on the day. Then it was off to Redmond’s of Scarawalsh to meet the beautifully restored 18th century travelling Coach that would have made its last official stop at Redmond’s in 1820. A magnificent travelling vehicle, the property of Mr. Paddy Hanly of Limerick, it is now used for weddings,

funerals and shows both around Ireland and the U.K. On Saturday 26th September the group commemorated the 100th anniversay of Padraig Pearse’s historic visit to Enniscorthy on 26th September 1915 where he made a speech to the Irish Volunteers at the Barley Field. Now exactly 100 years later Fintan Kelly of Enniscorthy Drama played the ALL ABOARD! Pic: Maria Nolan.

Another big risk this time of year is dogs and cats arriving either after eating rat poison itself or a rat that has been poisoned. The ingredient is dicoumarin and is still active in these dead rats. It affects the clotting factors in the blood and these animals tend to bleed either internally or externally. They can be treated if got to in time but it depends on how much they've eaten and how long it's in their system. The active ingredient is effective for a full month so signs can be pretty insidious initially… off food, lethargic, soft swellings on their body.... Keep the poison stored safely, lay it into pipes, nailing it down in them as rats often carry it from where it is initially placed and hence how dogs come to be affected too. Sometimes vigilant owners realise very early in play that their dog may have eaten it and we can help them 'vomit' it back up hopefully before anything has been absorbed in their system. If you are unsure or notice anything slightly off with your pets this time of year get them checked out. Time is of the essence for these conditions. It can be quite difficult to determine in the very early stages of both these conditions but they become more distinctive quite quickly. So if in doubt drop them in and get them checked. If all is ok then at least they can get their boosters! n

A local contributor looks at life today in Enniscorthy and beyond Pic: ©Joseph Doyle

View from the Hill Paul KeHoe t.D. Continuing our look at local T.D.s coming up to the next general election this month it is the turn of Minister of State, Government Chief Whip and Enniscorthy based T.D. Paul Kehoe. Paul was first elected to the Dail back in 2002 and returned in each election since. In fairness Fine Gael had an easy ride last time out with a passionate detestation of the outgoing government and they succeeded in getting both Kehoe and Liam Twomey elected. Their third candidate Micheal Darcy of Gorey almost made it but of course the entire picture was thrown off beam with Mick Wallace pulling over 13,000 votes out of the grasp of

the political parties. Despite his profile as a sitting T.D. Kehoe received less votes than any of his Fine Gael running mates. This was probably because of the massive push by the party to get Liam Twomey elected (he had lost his seat in the previous election). Since the election Paul has found himself at the centre of power as Enda Kenny’s righthand man and can be seen sitting behind the Taoiseach each day in Dail Eireann. The big question for the people of Co.Wexford and his power base in the Enniscorthy area is whether he has used this position to benefit his constituents. Like every other area of the country people have suffered

terribly at the hands of those who have followed vicious policies of austerity over the past eight years. People are well aware that every Fine Gael and Labour T.D., including Paul Kehoe, voted for policies which have wreaked havoc on the living standards of the majority of the population. As I pointed out in previous articles people tend to vote on these personal and micro issues rather than the fact that in general the economy has improved slightly over the past year or so. Has Paul Kehoe contributed directly to the improvements we have seen in the Co. Wexford constituency over the past few years is the next question? I would argue yes. There is no question that his position as a Junior Minister has greatly assisted in the large investments that we see in St. Aidan’s, St. Senan’s and St. Patrick’s schools. Cynics may say that, “Oh these things would have happened anyway.” Well anyone who knows anything about Irish politics will be well aware that these things don’t happen anyway. There is no doubt that without Paul Kehoe being where he is we would possibly still be waiting for those projects to get the green light. Also Kehoe has worked extremely hard ensuring that smaller projects within the county received their full enti-

tlements and he was active in pushing for the extension of the natural gas pipeline to the Wexford Town area. On a one-to-one level he runs a number of clinics throughout the county and has full-time offices in Enniscorthy and New Ross with very helpful and courteous staff. On a personal level Kehoe has never lost the run of himself despite his positions of power. Some people did think that he let himself down a little laughing and sniggering at Mick Wallace during a Dail debate when Enda Kenny, trying to be a smart ass, answered Wallace’s question in Irish knowing full well that Wallace was not fluent in the language. This is not the Paul Kehoe we know in Enniscorthy and I’m sure won’t affect his vote one way or the other but even

children know that we shouldn’t mock the inadequacies of others. We are not all geniuses. The question then is, “Will Paul Kehoe be re-elected?” I would say yes. With Liam Twomey not standing and Fine Gael putting forward only two candidates it would be a miracle if he wasn’t. However stranger things have happened and with Johnny Mythen of Sinn Fein bound to pull an extremely strong vote in the Enniscorthy area and the Fianna Fáil position not clear at the time of going to press he will need every vote he can hoover up to be sure of a return. Next question, “Should he be re-elected?” Well in fairness he has delivered to the Enniscorthy area in particular and if Fine Gael are in government with whatever partners after the election it’s highly likely that Paul Kehoe will have some position in government. It certainly would be Enniscorthy’s loss if he wasn’t. Mental HealtH Currently there are many campaigns being run in relation to the mental health of our people. Those involved in these campaigns are to be complimented on their efforts. To be aware that you or someone close to you has a problem or potential problem and to seek help without fear or

stigma is certainly part of the battle. To know who to approach is also essential and this could be a family member, friend or a professional agency. There are many reasons which cause people to suffer from depression and entertain thoughts of ending their lives. Only those in professional practice can get to the bottom of the problems which beset some but it is clear that the horrific recession and the financial implications it has had is responsible for a considerable extent of the increase in reported cases. Therefore it is incumbent on those in positions of power who interact with the population in relation to financial matters, such as the Revenue Commissioners, banks, local authorities and solicitors acting on behalf of such agencies who have relentlessly pursued people in debt over the last few years to stand back and give a little breathing space to debtors. Before a threatening letter is sent out the individual signing it should stop and think. Is this the final straw for the recipient and likely to drive them to utter despair. I leave them with that thought. n

BUNCLODY… €50,000 announCeD FoR BunCloDY / CaRRIGDuFF Following a joint application to the Department of Environment by Wexford County Council and Carlow County Council, the Bunclody/ Carrigduff area has been successfully designated a Rural Economic Development Zone (REDZ) and has been allocated a grant of €50,000 to fund a programme of economic revival in the area. REDZ acknowledges that rural communities know best what they require to boost economic growth within their own areas. The Carrigduff/Bunclody project application consists of the development of a speciality food laboratory for the production of innovative food

products linked to the highly fertile agricultural land in the Blackstairs area. The aim is to support new entrants and existing speciality food producers in the region so that they can increase sales and employment opportunities in this sector. This initiative will also foster closer collaboration between food enterprises and develop synergies with the farming, retail and tourism industry. Director of Housing and Community at Wexford County Council John Carley praised the local community for their work in producing a successful project application. “This innovative project is a perfect example of an entire community working together to identify and exploit local economic opportunities.”

Extended library premises in Irish Street were officially opened in January 1988 by Michael Sinnott, Chairman of WCC with councillors Rory Murphy, John Browne and Brendan Howlin present. Lucy moved to the new library in Millwood, Bunclody, when it opened in June 2007. Sunshine and hurling! Sunshine and hurling were once again the magical combination for the Michael Foley u-15 leinster Hurling tournament which took place in late august at Farmleigh and Pairc Garman with the Cup Final at Bellefield. 15 teams from all the counties in Leinster participated along with Antrim, with Kildare winning the Plate, Wexford winning the Shield and Kilkenny North winning the Cup. In its 8th year this competition just goes from strength to strength and tremendous credit is due to the organising committee especially Phil and Jim Kearney and Wexford County Board especially Joe Sheehan, Eoin Morrissey, Angela Furlong and Bobby Goff. And well done to the field management of Farmleigh, Pairc Garman and especially Bellefield where conditions underfoot were pristine and conducive to the wonderful hurling witnessed. This is a wonderful tribute each year to the memory of Michael Foley and means the world to his family and friends and long may it continue as a prestigious hurling event. – Maria Nolan

Caroline gets motoring renault Captur review by Caroline Kidd

the Renault Captur is easily one of the most visible compact crossovers on the road. It’s been a sales success on the Irish market, but the other reason for its visibility is the Captur’s very colourful presence. there’s an array of colour palettes to choose from, ranging from the bright and bold, to the sleek and sophisticated, with the car pictured being a particular success with its red body and black roof combination. There is an element of fun to the way the Captur looks and it continues inside. There are a lot of hard plastics in the cabin, but the look is modern and funky as opposed to cheap and nasty. It’s the little touches however that single the Captur out. Some models have removable seat covers that you can zip off and wash. You can slide the rear bench forwards from a lever in the boot, or from the cabin, to increase boot space. The boot has a false floor and when you place that in the very bottom of the boot, and push the rear seats forward, you’ve boosted the boot space from 377 litres to 455 litres. Combine all this with the fact that the Captur is 6cm longer and a bit higher than the Clio hatchback it’s based on, and you have a small car that is surprisingly practical. On the road, the Captur is

solid and planted, and with a 1.5dCi diesel engine in my test car, it’s well set up for motorway driving too. The steering and pedals are light so it’s a very easy car to drive and the compact dimensions make it easy to manoeuvre and park. The light controls do work a little bit against the Captur on a rural road because the steering can feel a bit vague as you turn in for the corner at speed, and the body roll will put you off driving fast around them. The engine range is simple with a small 0.9-litre turbocharged petrol unit or a 1.5litre diesel to choose from, and both produce 90bhp. I thought

the 1.5 diesel was a real high point for the car because it’s so refined, you’re not even thinking you’re driving a diesel it’s so quiet on the move. It’s not hugely powerful on paper, but it’s not sluggish either and rarely feels out of its depth. The ace card for the Captur is that it’s so well-equipped, even in standard ‘Life’ trim - four electric windows, Bluetooth, alloys, daytime running lights, cruise control and climate control. The Captur lacks sharp steering and handling characteristics, but in the crossover market, comfort, refinement a n d e c o n o m y a re h i g h l y

regarded and the Captur scores on those fronts. It’s a small car but Renault has packaged the space really well and with so much competition, the Captur stands out among compact crossovers for its style and customisation – without being weird-looking. So if you don’t fall for the space, you will certainly love the way it looks! HISTOry DOeS repeAT ITSelf Padraig Pearse’s historic visit to enniscorthy was relived last month by enniscorthy Historic & Re-enactment S o c i e t y. to s a y t h a t enniscorthy has now kickstarted its 1916 Centenary programme would be a fair comment. It’s definitely off to a flying start. It was exactly the same time and to the day that Pearse visited Enniscorthy all those years ago on 26th September 1915 to a guard of honour of the A and B companies of the Irish Volunteers. To say that Pearse was recruiting an army to fight alongside him is a true fact. He inspected a guard of honour of uniformed volunteers and non-uniformed volunteers. He then gave a heroic speech to the assembled volunteers and was greeted with “here, here” and a round of applause. He was treated to the Soldier’s Song which was sung by Tim Corrigan. Tim then sang A Nation Once Again. There was a great turnout of volunteers in emerald green uniforms and peaked caps with guns by

their side as they faced the flag. The volunteers were represented from the Enniscorthy re-enactment group, both uniformed and non-uniformed volunteers, plus the non-uniformed volunteers IRB, these were made up of men from Enniscorthy Historic & Re-enactment Society, Cumann na mBan, men from Lord Edward’s Own, Kilkenny’s flying column, etc. It was a well-put-together re-enact ment event and Enniscorthy’s first taste of what’s to come next Easter. The crowd that had gathered were dumbfounded at what they saw. Enniscorthy Historic & Re-enactment Society would like to thank Fintan Kelly for playing Pearse plus for his hospitality in Toss Kavanagh’s afterwards. Thanks also to Jimmy Gahan for doing MC and Sean Doyle for his speech and also a big thank you to all the photographers who captured this historic event – the start of a very busy year for the group. – Joseph Doyle

Cystic Fibrosis Ireland would like to thank Stamps Pub, toss Kavanaghs and Joe Doyles for taking part in the Raise the Bar event, plus the Village Inn in Coolgreaney. Cannonball Run in Wexford by Dwane Doran the Cannonball arrived on the quay in Wexford on Sunday, 13th September, in spectacular style. a huge crowd, in their thousands, came out in strength to see the now annual event for themselves. Along with jet-skies and aeronautical stunt planes showing off their skills, there was a huge selection of top of the range cars from Ferrari to Porsche, Lamborghini, Bentley, Mustang, Audi and many more – there was something for everyone’s tastes. The young and old, boys and

girls, were there and all had a great time. Once they arrived all the cars parked along the quayside for everyone to get up close to and some even got inside. The contestants were very involved, dressed in costume and partying with the crowds. As well as being great entertainment the Cannonball was run as a large, charity event and all funds went to ‘Make-A-Wish Ireland’. According to Cannonball's Facebook page there were 180

Focal goes to the Mansion House Focal Wexford literary Festival was delighted to be involved with the release of Crime Writer louise Phillips’ new book The game Changer at the beautiful Mansion House, Dublin, on thursday 10th September. Members of Focal were invited to be part of a Q&A session at the historic Oak Room hosted by one of their own - local author and Focal committee member Caroline Busher. As part of this year’s Focal Festival in June Caroline hosted a panel discussion with Louise Phillips, Claudia Carroll, Rachel English and Carmel Harrington and Louise was so impressed with Caroline’s confident manner and warm personality, along with her knowledge as a writer and her ability as an interviewer that she invited her to host an exclusive event in the Oak Room of the magnificent Mansion House for the release of her 4th novel - The Game Changer. Caroline had no hesitation accepting and interviewed Louise in front of an audience of eighty people at this prestigious, invitation-only event in the ornate Oak Room built in 1715 and steeped in history. Louise spoke openly and honestly about her experience as a writer and read a section from her novel along with taking a variety of questions from the

floor about herself, her writing and of course The Game Changer, which is already receiving critical acclaim from both critics and readers. Louise also spoke of her admiration for Caroline and recalled her time spent in Enniscorthy earlier this year at the Focal Literary Festival calling it ‘a wonderful literary event’ and one that she would certainly look forward to attending again. Louise presented Caroline with a bouquet of flowers and thanked her and the other members of Focal for attending and the evening closed with a private Reception at No.37 Dawson

Street where refreshments were served and goodie bags were given to all who attended. Caroline, one of Focal’s upand-coming writers, lives in Wexford with her husband and three children. She is the recipient of the 2014 Literature Bursary from Wexford County Council and is currently completing an MA in Creative Writing at UCD. She recently had a short story published by O’Brien Press as part of RTE Book Show 100 words, 100 books competition and her poetry was shortlisted for the Bare Fiction Literary Journal. Caroline’s

work was also in the final of the Bord Gais Energy Book Club Short Story Competition, which was held in conjunction with TV3. Caroline said that it was an honour to be asked to host this special occasion for such a well known and respected crime writer as Louise Phillips. Caroline has recently been longlisted herself for the RTE Guide Penguin Ireland Short Story Competition and took part in a publishing event following the Mansion House. Focal is thrilled that local writers and members of their committee like Caroline are becoming well known and nationally recognised and are thrilled that Caroline’s book was discovered at our very first Focal Literary Festival in 2014 by American Agent Tracy Brennan who has forwarded it to several publishing houses in the States and is awaiting a positive response. Focal are also delighted that acclaimed writers like Louise Phillips are seeing our Festival as a ‘wonderful literary event’ and are both willing and anxious to attend. It seems Focal Wexford Literary Festival is doing something right! So let’s keep it up! – Maria Nolan

the remarkable contributions of the Rowsome family, descendents of Wexford musician Samuel Rowsome, to the 300year history of the uilleann pipes, are detailed in a new book entitled The Wheels of The World by Irish authors Colin Harper and John McSherry. Samuel Rowsome was a popular piper in the 1820s who lived in Ballintore in the barony of Scarawalsh, Co. Wexford. His grandson Leo Rowsome is regarded as one of the mainstays of the uilleann pipes tradition in the middle of the last century, alongside such other celebrated stalwarts as Seamus Ennis and Willie Clancy. Leo married Helena Williams from Taghmon, and Harper acknowledges Leo as one of the best pipers of the 20th and 21th centuries. He compares his dexterity to that of guitar heroes such as Jimi Hendrix, and believes that the famous Italian composer Vivaldi would have

composed for a player of Leo’s superior talent. Harper also makes several references to Leo’s father, Samuel’s son William, who learned music from a German teacher in Ferns, started making pipes in Dublin and impressed many with his playing when he returned to Wexford. Other descendants of Wexfordman Samuel Rowsome covered in The Wheels of The

World include Ciaran, Kevin, Leon, Thomas, Helena and Tom Rowsome. The book also concedes that there was a time when the uilleann pipes, once known as “the Irish organ”, were “not always welcome in the Irish tradition”, so there’s little doubt that the five generations of the Rowsome family played a major role in re-establishing the instrument as a major force in Irish music. This mammoth survey also reveals how the uilleann pipes came back into prominence in the Irish folk scene in modern times thanks to the playing of Liam O’Flynn, Davy Spillane, the book’s co-author John McSherry, Paddy Moloney, Paddy Keenan and Finbar Furey, all of whom helped popularise the instrument, both at home and far beyond these shores. The Wheels of The World – 300 Years of Irish Uilleann Pipes by Colin Harper and John McSherry is published by The Jawbone Press. n

Revolutionary Wexford Cllr Johnny Mythen, Grainne Doran County Archivist, Cathy Keane, Jarlath Glynn, Executive Librarian, at the lecture on 1916 in Enniscorthy Library. Pic: Patrick Hogan.

an excellent 1916 lecture was given at enniscorthy library on 27th august to an interested audience of about 50 people. the presentation was the first in a series of Commemorative lectures in Wexford libraries on the 1916 period in Co. Wexford. the talk ‘Revolutionary Wexford – a glimpse into the 1916 period through extant documents and artefacts in Wexford County archive’ was delivered eloquently by Gráinne Doran, archivist with Wexford County Council. A slideshow of images featuring a selection of documents, photographs and artefacts from the county archive’s 1916 collection were showcased. The photographs, many of them taken by Enniscorthy Photographer A.E. Creane, included several groups of Vo l u n t e e r s a s s e m b l e d i n Enniscorthy, a postcard photograph featuring a group of Cumann na mBan and Volunteer

members at a first aid lecture, the s u r re n d e r o u t s i d e t h e Athenaeum along with the image of the unique Enniscorthy flag – this emblem sets Wexford apart from other counties – Enniscorthy being the only town in Ireland with their own flag, which is at the moment with a textile company being preserved. Reference was made to the assent by Colonel G.A. French, commander of British troops in County Wexford, to facilitate the conveyance of Adjutant Séamus Doyle and Captain Seán Etchingham to Dublin to seek a meeting with Pádraig Pearse in Arbour Hill prison – a significant historical coup in itself at such an advanced stage in the Rising, and given that Dublin had already surrendered. The initial letter written by Robert Brennan to Colonel French and signed by the six rebel leaders seeking permission for two of the leaders to visit Pearse in prison was shown as

was Pearse’s order of surrender. A significant element of the 1916 collection in the county archive is centred on the aftermath of the surrender on 1 May 1916 and the subsequent arrests and internment of the rebels. Some of the handwritten letters from prisoners writing home to their loved ones were shown, as was a selection of prison craftwork which ranged from pieces of macramé to elaborately designed bone crosses and bone carvings. A safe pass for a Miss Mary Hanrahan to return to her home in St. Stephen’s Green Dublin was displayed, with Grainne explaining that no-one knows who this woman was or whom she was visiting in Enniscorthy and if anyone can shed any light on it she would be most grateful for the information. The Archivist remarked that the wealth of 1916 archival material in the county archive helps to document the memorable

contribution to Ireland’s struggle for national Independence that the ordinary men and women of County Wexford made, many of whom otherwise would have gone undocumented. The collection is of historical interest to a diverse audience ranging from the academic to the local historian, and from the family history researcher to the student. She appealed to those present to contact Wexford County Archive if they have any documents or family memorabilia relating to the 1916 period in County Wexford that they wish to share for possible inclusion in next year’s extended 1916 exhibition which will open in the newly refurbished Athenaeum. A particular appeal was made for any photographs of women who were members of Cumann na mBan. After a brief question and answers session Enniscorthy Librarian Jarlath Glynn thanked Grainne for her most interesting and informative talk telling those present that the next in the series would take place at the Library on Thursday 10th September and would be focusing on Cumann na mBan`s role in Enniscorthy before, during and after the Rising. Jarlath also mentioned that the Enniscorthy 1916 Programme was almost finalised and would be in the public arena in the next few weeks including details of a special 1916 Conference in March of next year. Around the World in 80 days – From Wexford with Love From Wexford with Love weaves a tale of adventure, taking the readers on a fast paced journey from Wexford, around the world and back home again. The book is an anthology of stories from some of Wexford’s well known and loved authors. The theme of the book is no matter where you wander, there’s no place like home, and Wexford. The book is priced at €10 and all proceeds go directly to the Alzheimers Society of Ireland. Not satisfied with simply compiling a book of around the world stories for charity, Focal Literary Festival has decided to send From Wexford with Love ‘Around the World in 80 Days’ – thanks to the power of social media. The competition runs for 80 days, from Monday October 12th until Wednesday December 30th. The competition consists of a Facebook and Twitter campaign to have photos of From Wexford with Love in the most obscure and farflung places in the world: from the Rocks of Maudlintown to Ayers Rock in Australia, posted to Focal’s Facebook page or Twitter account. The participants also have to add a quote about Wexford. The winner will be announced on New Year’s Eve, and a hamper of Wexford goodies and books will be sent to them. From Wexford with Love is a beautiful gift, particularly for those away from home and it would make a lovely Christmas present. So why not send a copy to your nearest and dearest around the world and tell them to enter our competition. Postage is free of charge, anywhere in the world, when ordered from www.focalliteraryfestival.com and every cent goes to the Alzheimer’s Society of Ireland. For more information on the competition, go to www.focalliteraryfestival.com, or Facebook at www.facebook.com/Focal WexfordLiteraryFestival or Tweet us @FWexfordLitFest n

Silent Film + Piano The Wexford County Council Arts Department and New Ross Municipal District Office are hosting a video art exhibition, “Silent Film + Piano”. The exhibition runs from 21st of September to 23rd of October at various locations throughout the town centre. The exhibition salutes the bond between silent film and the piano when cinemas would employ pianists to accompany their films. Animation, video art and primarily silent films will help celebrate the special relationship between silent film and the piano. To coincide with the exhibition a talk/musical performance has been organised with Matthew Nolan of the silent film scoring band 3epekano and Trinity College film lecturer. This will take place on 10th October at 2pm in Café Voilá, St Michael’s Theatre, New Ross. Entrance is free and all are very welcome. Further details of this exhibition are available at www.wexford.ie/arts.

Sift Contemporary Painting Project Sift is a contemporary painting project co-curated by visual artist John Busher and trudi Van Der elsen. exhibiting artists include John Busher, trudi Van Der elsen, noelle Gallagher, Will o’Kane, Kate Murphy and Joan Sugrue. The project began through a common link in their painting practice, mostly through themes of memory and place, and the body and space. Early stages of the project stemmed from a member’s show Essays for the House of Memory, that took place in Ormston House, early 2014. ‘The Institute’ in Enniscorthy was considered as a venue to present the project, bearing in mind its long history as a focal point in the community of the town. Caroline Busher had previously made a written response to works in the state art collection, and was invited to respond to the artists’ work. Discussing how the artists worked over a number of weeks, she eventu-

ally wrote a series of short stories. Place became an important backdrop to the writing; a collaboration with writer Peter Murphy was formed in an effort to explore this notion from the context of ‘The Institute’. Independent research was carried out on the building using the local studies service at County Wexford Library. Microfilm was used to examine early editions of the Enniscorthy Guardian. Part of this research informed how the artists responded to the building. The upper floor of ‘The Institute’ originally served the purpose as an event hall, providing lectures, choral recitals and entertainment to the local community. Most of the research involved examining town notes to reference any events that may have been held there. The idea of reimagining the dance hall became a focal point for the p ro j e c t . F o l l o w i n g t h i s , Enniscorthy Choral Society was invited to take part in the project; director Donagh Wylde

made a selection of works based on the central themes of the project. The project is planned to coincide with Wexford Opera Festival, as an out of town event through the Wexford Fringe Festival programme. The project was conceived as a community endeavour that attempts to rekindle people’s memory of ‘The Institute’. All artists have a diverse and contemporary approach to painting practice; they have exhibited nationally and internationally and received many awards and residencies to support their work. an open view is planned to take place on Friday oct 16th, at 7pm, with written responses by Caroline Busher, a performance event by Peter Murphy and a choral response by enniscorthy Choral Society. the exhibition then continues until the 31st of october 2015. opening times: 10am – 5pm Daily (excluding Mondays). n
