OPEN AT DRUMGOOLD, ENNISCORTHY

At the time of going to press the date for the 2016 General Election has just been announced – Friday 26th February. Co. Wexford has 17 candidates running many of whom would make excellent representatives for our county. We wish them all the very best of luck – it’s a brave decision to put one’s name before the electorate and leave oneself open to all the criticism and, indeed, abuse that comes with the territory.

There are still many countries around the world which deny their citizens the opportunity to vote. Thankfully, we have that right in this country and we would urge everyone to exercise that right. This will be our last issue before the election but we look forward to reporting, on our very popular Facebook page, on all aspects of a campaign which will be an intriguing battle for the hearts and minds of Co. Wexford’s electorate. n

comment At the Enniscorthy Municipal District Council meeting on 20th January John Carley, Director of Services at Wexford County Council, said he wanted to “nail it once and for all” that dredging on its own can solve the flooding problems in Enniscorthy. Larry McHale, resident engineer for the flood defence project, said that dredging would be part of the solution and that he was trying to fast-track this work so that it would take place before the end of 2016 – the same time as the main construction work will begin on the flood defence scheme. A public display explaining the flood defence scheme, and showing what the completed scheme will look like, is planned for Enniscorthy for the middle of this year, he said. On the infrastructural front also, the official sod-turning ceremony for the N25 New Ross Bypass PPP Project took place on Monday 1st February in Camlin, New Ross. This event follows the official sod-turning on the Enniscorthy Bypass a number of months ago. Recent announcements of funding for Co. Wexford’s roads, hospitals, Rosslare Harbour Europort, etc are to be welcomed also. The county badly needs all the infrastructural investment it can muster to help it compete better for new employment-generating industry and services. – Frank Corcoran

Enniscorthy Credit Union –

3 February 2016

A Message from Cllr. Ger Carthy

supporting the local community A Chairde

On the page opposite I have highlighted what I believe are some of the main issues which face the country and most importantly Co. Wexford.

I have tried my best to identify the issues and problems which are the priorities for people in Co. Wexford based on the many conversations I have had with people in all parts of the county.

Both as the father of three young children and as an Advanced Paramedic with the HSE attached to Wexford General Hospital, working on the front line of the health service, I am only too well aware of the difficulties and challenges faced by people up and down the county. The past few years have been very difficult for everyone in Co. Wexford and many families have really suffered with some losing their jobs, their homes - everything. L-R: Enniscorthy Credit Union sponsors the 2016 Hope & Dream 10 to the tune of €8,500. L-R: Liz Cullen (Asst. Manager, Enniscorthy Credit Union), Pat O’Shea (Chairman, Enniscorthy Credit Union), Michael Jordan (Race Director, Hope & Dream 10), Tony Ennis (Manager, Enniscorthy Credit Union).

Enniscorthy Credit union is always to the fore in sponsoring worthy, community initiatives. in the last couple of weeks alone it has sponsored two important projects to the tune of almost €30,000. The Hope & Dream 10, represented by Race Director, Michael Jordan, received an Enniscorthy Credit Union cheque in January for €8,500 – the third year in a row that Enniscorthy Credit Union has been a major sponsor of this huge event. The 2016 version of the Hope and Dream 10 will raise funds and awareness for the Hope Cancer Support Centre and Co. Wexford Hospice Homecare Service. This race has been held annually since 2012. In 2012 and 2013 all funds raised were split equally between the Hope Cancer Support Centre and Share a Dream Foundation. In 2014 and 2015 all funds raised

were split equally between the Hope Cancer Support Centre and Console, Wexford. Since 2012 an amazing €532,246 has been raised! The date for this year's race is Sunday 10th April 2016. You can register online at www.hopeanddream10.com. Last month Enniscorthy Credit Union also passed over a huge cheque for €20,000 to the Athenaeum Restoration Fund to allow the Athenaeum directors make full use of the building once the current renovation work is complete. The Athenaeum was the first home of Enniscorthy Credit Union when it commenced operation in Enniscorthy in 1964 so it is appropriate that the success since then of Enniscorthy Credit Union now allows it to make a huge contribution back into the historic building where it all began. Enniscorthy Credit Union Chairman, Pat O’Shea, says,

“In Enniscorthy Credit Union we pride ourselves on our community involvement so we are delighted to be able to contribute to both the Hope & Dream 10 and The Athenaeum Restoration Fund. We also pride ourselves on meeting the financial needs of our 28,000 members. In 2015 we provided over 3,600 loans to our members valued at €12.5m. We are in a strong and healthy financial postion with assets of €147m and reserves of almost €23m. The outlook is positive with good prospects for dividend growth in the near future as the country continues to pull out of recession. And Enniscorthy Credit Union is always open for loans, so call in or telephone 053-9233835 and avail of our very favourable interest rates.” Fancy a new job? Enniscorthy Credit Union is recruiting a new Manager – see full details on page 9. n

While people feel betrayed by a Fianna Fail party which inflicted such misery on the country, they feel equally betrayed by the current government and particularly the Labour Party who promised so much before the last election only to break every single promise they made. There is a genuine belief among the public that the Labour Party members of government turned their backs on people who had supported them all their lives. It was as if Labour decided to make a virtue of breaking as many promises as possible and to attack in a most savage way ordinary working people and those dependent on welfare payments. In seeking your support I am conscious that people feel so let down by the politicians they voted for five years ago. Many are truly disgusted by what they have witnessed over recent years and believe that some of their representatives have really lost touch with the people who elected them.

I offer myself to the electorate as someone not attached to the policies of the mainstream parties which have so badly let down so many people. I also offer an alternative to the populist and in many respects irresponsible policies of those who are on the far left of Irish and Wexford politics.

I won’t make many promises but I will guarantee one thing------------if elected to Dail Eireann I will never forget the people I represent. People struggling in isolated rural communities and those trying to make ends meet in the towns, people with jobs and those without employment and the many people working so hard in small businesses to provide employment right across the county My late father Leo Carthy represented the people of Wexford at Co. Council level for fifty years. He taught me many things, but in particular he instilled in me the need for people always to keep their feet on the ground.

As an Independent I am not weighed down by the party system which has failed so many hard working Wexford families in recent years. In politics I believe it is the people and not the party that are important and if elected a TD the people of Wexford and their genuine concerns will always be top of my agenda and I will work tirelessly in a positive manner to strengthen the Co. Wexford economy and to bring about the infrastructural developments which are vital to ensure economic progress and prosperity for the people of the county into the future.

Yours Sincerely, Cllr. Ger Carthy

Enniscorthy Credit Union presents €20,000 to the Athenaeum Restoration Fund. Front L-R: Paddy Lennon (former Chairman, Enniscorthy Credit Union), Tony McClean (Chairman, Athenaeum), Tony Ennis (Manager, Enniscorthy Credit Union).

Tech Tip

iot: internet oF things Imagine this: As you approach the front door of your house, a remote control built into your key unlocks the door. The door's wireless radio messages the network, which prompts the hall light to turn on. The house thermostat, which was lowered after you left for work, returns to a comfort zone. Another scenario: You are away on vacation and the house is empty. A moisture sensor detects water on the basement floor. That sensor finding is processed by an app, which has received another report from a temperature sensor that detects the flow of water in the main water pipe. Both sensors are detecting anomalies. A high rate of flowing water may signal a burst pipe, triggering an automated valve shutoff; a slight water flow might be a running toilet, and the water on the basement floor by routine leakage from heavy rain. In either case, you get a machine-generated message describing the findings. We have just described an intelligent house powered by IoT. You've heard the term and probably read stories about smart homes where the toaster talks to the smoke detector. How is that all possible?

by DaviD pohluDek Ferns compuTer services

The next generation of Internet protocol (IPv6) helps IoT become alive. IPv6 replaces IPv4 which assigned 32-bit addresses, with a total limit of 4.3 billion. IPv6 is 128-bit, and allows for 340 trillion trillion trillion addresses. This makes it possible to assign a unique identifier to anything that's part of the IoT. What makes the Internet of Things almost human? Sensors. IoT devices have sensors that can register changes in temperature, light, pressure, sound and motion. A true Internet of Things is coordination between multiple devices using sensors. The IoT rollout will be slow and will occur over many years but one day our children will realise the Future has arrived. n Ferns Computer Services has been in business in Ferns since May 2007. Enniscorthy flag restored 1916 CENTENARY HIGHLIGHTS As a fitting tribute to mark the centenary of the 1916 rising in County wexford this year, wexford County Council is delighted to confirm the conservation and restoration of the original Enniscorthy 1st battalion Flag. This historic and unique flag formed part of the Wexford County Museum collection in Enniscorthy Castle for a number of decades. It was in poor condition, having been on longterm open display, and it had suffered some surface and ingrain soiling and discolouration as a result of exposure to light. The original toggle and hanging rope were still intact. The flag was authenticated by textile conservator Rachel

Phelan from Dublin who was then given the task by Wexford County Council of restoring this important artefact to its original condition. Following almost four months of painstaking conservation work, the Enniscorthy Battalion Flag has now been completely restored and the finished product stitchmounted to padded board for display purposes. Representing one of the very few flags associated with the 1916 Rising to have survived outside of Dublin, the Enniscorthy 1st Battalion flag is a unique heritage item from this significant period in County Wexford’s history. The Enniscorthy Battalion was the strongest unit in County Wexford in the lead-up to and

during the 1916 Rising. It comprised three companies of Irish Volunteers which were identified as A, B and C. The battalion had its own flag which was made from wool dyed green. It depicted a sevenstringed harp in gold with the Enniscorthy coat of arms set in a blue shield in the top lefthand corner. The legend ‘1st Batt. Enniscorthy’ was painted in white lettering below the shield. Traditionally, a green flag with a gold harp was the main symbol of nationalism. Where to now for Irish Climate Policy? An interesting upcoming event is being organised by wexford lions Club – its inaugural president’s lecture. it will t a k e p l a c e o n tu e s d a y, February 9th at 7.30pm in Clayton whites hotel. the theme for the evening is: there is no plAnet b – where to now for irish Climate policy? Climate Change has received unprecedented media coverage in Ireland over recent weeks. During this time the Climate Action and Low Carbon Development Act has come into law and the historic Paris Agreements were adopted at the 21st Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP21). Meanwhile at home there have been serious and persistent flooding incidents across the entire country with people

It's all happening on the Hill it's nearly two years since the Slaney News caught up with tadhg Darcy as he opened the door of his window blind showroom on Castle hill, Enniscorthy. since then tadhg Darcy blinds has gone from strength to strength. January 2016 saw the opening of its renovated showroom complete with its new and striking exterior and interior, and an exciting new image. so we caught up again with tadhg so see what exactly is happening on the hill.

slaney news: Congratulations tadhg on the opening of your newly renovated showroom, what's different and why the new image? Tadhg: Thanks Frank. It's very different – a new concept "gallery showroom" which is designed to display our most popular blinds and finishings. Also, it’s a relaxing work-space with good lighting which allows our customers to choose from the huge array of products we have without falling over sample books and rolls of fabric. Our customers can see the blinds in made-up form and have all the information and advice on hand.

Tadhg Darcy – www.tadhgdarcyblinds.ie

slaney news: how has business been generally? Tadhg: Business is good, it's a tough market and hard work but the word is spreading of our value for money, quality and personal service. You see I offer the complete window blind service from blind

cleaning/repairs to all the latest blind fashions. I also started a new factory/workshop last year to help with repairs and blind cleaning, it allows us to keep quality high and prices low. My family have been in the window blind business for three generations so we must be doing something right. slaney news: we always encourage people to shop local. Do you think that is important? It's very important to all traders in Enniscorthy that people shop local and it's equally important that all traders keep at the top of their game and offer top products, the best service possible and all keenly priced. I used all local businesses in the fit-out of my new store and would like to thank them all for their excellent service and workmanship. Enniscorthy has it all and we all have Enniscorthy. n

being forced to leave their homes and facing serious cleanup costs. Minister Brendan Howlin has said that relocation programmes and large levies on insurance policies may both have to be considered to tackle future floods. In this context the Wexford Lions Club will draw together a panel of speakers to discuss some of these key issues, with a focus on clarifying the state of play with Ireland’s international obligations and to discuss what kinds of actions should be at the top of the Government’s priorities as we address this multi-faceted issue. The lineup of speakers is as follows: Dr Padraic Larkin (Chairperson), Director of Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) (retired) – overview of climate science. M r G e o rg e H u s s e y,

Statistician, Department of Environment Community and Local Government – COP21 and Ireland’s international obligations. Professor John Fitzgerald, Chairperson Climate Change Advisory Council (CCAC) – The role of the CCAC in informing Irish Climate Mitigation and Adaptation Policy and future priorities. Mr Oisín Coghlan, Director Friends of the Earth Ireland – making the case for ambitious mitigation objectives in the context of a heightened awareness of the domestic need for adaptation funding. Presentations on the night will be followed by a short question and answer session and debate. Admission is free but there will be a voluntary collection on departure for the Wexford Lions Club. n

The Playboy comes to town! Enniscorthy Drama Group, fresh from its appearance at the All-Ireland Drama Finals in Galway in December, brings you an epic masterpiece by the legendary playwright John Millington Synge. Set on the West Coast of Ireland, this famous and contro-

versial play is a tale of heroism and revulsion. It runs in The Presenation Centre from 4th to 7th February. The small community in County Mayo is thrown into turbulence with the arrival of Christy Mahon, a mysterious stranger claiming to have killed his father. The

local men aren’t sure if he's a danger and the local women find him fascinating. Michael James Flaherty, the local publican, takes a shine to him, and his daughter Pegeen Mike finds his company preferable to that of her dull fiancée, Shawn Keogh. However it transpires that Christy's father is not dead after all, when Old Mahon arrives with a gaping head wound, searching for his ungrateful son. Synge emphasises a link between the imagination of the Irish country people and their speech itself, which is "rich and living". He credits the Irish people for having such a "fiery", "magnificent" language, and further credits himself for having both the presence of mind and poetic vision to recognise those virtues. n

Margo Whelan plays the demanding role of Pegeen Mike.

The talented bunch included a singer from Wexford town Chris Berry, trad music group INTRO, 16-year-old singer Hayley Crosbie, free runners VYRE, 11-year-old singer Emma O’Leary, gymnast Tara Doyle Robinson, 18-year-old singer from Bree Megan Kate Doolin, 12-year-old singer from Gorey Jirat O’Neill, 17-year-old singer from Cork Nicole Mannix, musical group 7TH Fret, 11-year-old singer Cormac Cooper from Ballywilliam, dancer Irina Karpenko, singer Charleen Murphy, dance troupe Aurora – all students at the Sheila Grace Dance Company, 12-year-old singer Aoife Goodison, singer-

Ta r a a t t e n d e d L o re t o Secondary School and is a previous pupil of Barntown National School in Wexford; Tara has been a member of Wexford Gymnastics Club since she was 7 years old, which led to many opportunities including national and international medals and titles. One of these opportunities was in June 2014 when she represented I re l a n d a t t h e Wo r l d Championships. Tara was invited to train in the Circus Space in Bristol where she learned many new skills one in particular that caught her eye was Aerial Silks which she then combined with her acrobatic skills to create a routine which she showcased at Wexford Has Talent 2015. She returned to the competition this year with a brand new routine which she prepared especially for the show. This was the second year of the competition and the winners of the inaugural competition in 2015 Wexford-based band ‘Fit For Kings’ who have since gone on to release their successful debut single ‘Heartache’ also took to the stage at the Wexford Has Talent Grand Final to entertain the audience while the judges deliberated on their very difficult decision. Wexford Has Talent Judge,

Tony Carty said, “This was an incredible showcase of talent tonight, the standard amongst the finalists is at a professional level, the future of entertainment in Wexford and beyond certainly is safe and I wouldn't be surprised to see a number of these names on stage globally in the future. This competition offers a wonderful platform to showcase and nurture all varieties of talent and it’s a joy to be part of celebrating that. Myself and all of the judges would like to congratulate all of the finalists, each of them really delivered on stage tonight and picking just one winner was an extremely difficult decision.” Commenting on the evening, one of the event organisers Kilian Duigan said, “We are delighted with the massive hit that these shows have been, the feedback from the audience members, all of the contestants and our supporters has been so positive and we would like to thank every one of them for that. We know that Wexford has Talent offers a wonderful opportunity to the entirety of Wexford and beyond to come and show off even the quirkiest of talents and we are thrilled to be able to facilitate that. We’re already planning Wexford Has Talent 2017. I would like to thank all the judges, MCs, our kind sponsors and all the Sarsfields crew, without whom we would not have been able to run such a professional series of shows!” n

Dance group, Aurora, reached the final of this year’s Wexford Has Talent.

JaNuary CaN Go F*** ITselF January is traditionally never a good month. Let’s be honest, there are many reasons to despise the month. While they were planning the months, I’m pretty sure they got a bunch of interns into a room, fresh out of college. The brainstorming session in the planning for January probably went as follows: LEAD INTERN: Right, they picked us because we’re the bestest at our jobs. A clatter of cutlery occurs as the doors fly open. RODNEY falls in. LEAD INTERN: Ah, Rodney good to have you. Now January? Right, Christmas is over, we need to bring everyone down. Let’s have it tradition to rewrap the lights from the tree, shut everything down, have nothing happen… oh and rain, loads of rain. How about a month of days that all seem like a hungover Sunday?? RODNEY: Rodney!!! LEAD INTERN: Good man, Rodney. Done and done! And that is how January came

about. I’m pretty sure it is anyway. They forgot to mention something else that seems to be exclusive to this January. A gaggle of people’s favourite people dying. Dying before their time and leaving a massive hole in the world, not merely in the arts world, but the world in general. Seriously, January go f*** yourself!! –––––––––––––––––––––––––– Vilmos Zsigmond: A name I would venture a guess that not many of you would be familiar with, and then again maybe you are, if so I apologise. Anyway, this man was a cinematographer. His most impressive works? Well for my money, The Deer Hunter and Close Encounters of The Third Kind, two different films in terms of feel, story and emotions. But from an aesthetic perspective, they are cut from the same cloth. A cloth fashioned by Zsigmond. –––––––––––––––––––––––––– David Bowie a.k.a. The Thin White Duke, Ziggy Stardust, Aladdin Zane:

Or as he was known to his mam, David Jones. What can I say about this behemoth of a man that hasn’t already been said? I remember the first time I heard him, well I heard someone singing one of his songs. Strangely enough, it was on an episode of Father Ted, the one with Henry Sellers, the camera cut back to the All Priest’s Talent Show and there was a priest in full Ziggy getup, warbling “Ziggy played guitaaaaarrrr!” It made me

View From The Nosebleeds laugh, but it made me search out the man the priest was portraying. And it was a glorious find, man didn’t just change the music scene, he constantly kept himself fresh and was constantly finding ways of making whatever he was doing new. A true legend. –––––––––––––––––––––––––– Ian Fraser “Lemmy” Killmister: Handlebar moustache, bottle of Jack, cowboy hat complete with boots, Rickenbacker, unusually angled microphone

and a pure “This is our music, it’s loud, balls to the wall, and if you don’t like it, kindly f*** off” attitude that defied everything and everyone he encountered. And then your ears, eyes and general body space was assaulted with pure rock and roll for a solid two hours. The only way to have it. Lemmy, you were a giant among men sir, sleep well. –––––––––––––––––––––––––– Alan Rickman: Hans Gruber, Severus Snape, Eamonn de Valera. A voice that could melt the polar ice caps, a quintessentially British air in how he carried himself and a charisma that could make you millions if you bottled it. And he, along with Bill Nighy was the only bearable thing about Love Actually. Not an easy feat and I would like to think that he is not merely passed on, but lived past Nakatomi, survived that fall and is getting fat on that beach, “earning his 30%”. –––––––––––––––––––––––––– Glenn Frey: Lying Eyes, Peaceful Easy

Feeling, Hotel California, Take It Easy. You know them, he wrote them. And said possibly one of my favourite quotes ever, when asked about the band being “boring”, “Well, the difference between being boring and lazy is about a million dollars.” –––––––––––––––––––––––––– So, in closing I’m sure you probably had a lovely January. And I wish you the very best with it! But it was nothing but crap if you loved any of the above people. And if you did, mourn their loss. You should mourn openly. When an artist dies, there is a huge amount of grief and sadness and it stems from whoever that artist is having a huge impact on your life. A memory, a line of a song, a line of dialogue, and a look he/she gave in your favourite scene, your favourite line from a book. And to top it off? Celebrity Big Brother is in the 17th season of its run. SEVENTEEN… SEVENTEEN SEASONS. Run for the bunker, we are banjoed!!! – JAMIE MURPHY

ICONIC 1970s BRITISH ROCK BANDS… JIMMY MURPHY CONTINUES WITH PART 6 OF HIS LOOK AT… Jimmy Murphy

Black Sabbath!

Black Sabbath began work on new material in October 1986 at Air Studios in Montserrat with producer Jeff Glixman. The recording was fraught with problems from the beginning, as Glixman left after the initial sessions to be replaced by producer Vic Coppersmith-Heaven. Bassist Dave Spitz quit over personal issues, and ex-Rainbow and Ozzy Osbourne bassist Bob Daisley was brought in. Daisley rerecorded all of the bass tracks, and wrote the album’s lyrics, but before the album was complete he left to join Gary Moore’s backing band, taking drummer Eric Singer with him. After problems with second producer CoppersmithHeaven, the band returned to Morgan Studios in England in January 1987 to work with new producer Chris Tsangarides. While working in the UK, new vocalist Ray Gillen abruptly

left Black Sabbath to form Blue Monday with John Sykes. The band enlisted ex-Alliance vocalist Tony Martin to re-record Gillen’s tracks, and former ELO drummer Bev Bevan to complete a few percussion overdubs. Before the release of the new album Black Sabbath accepted an offer to play six shows at Sun City, South Africa, during the apartheid era. The band drew criticism from activists and artists involved with Artists United Against Apartheid, who had been boycotting South Africa since 1985. Drummer Bev Bevan refused to play the shows, and was replaced by Terry Chimes, formerly of the Clash. After nearly a year in production, The Eternal Idol was released on December 8th 1987 and ignored by contemporary reviewers. AllMusic said that Martin’s powerful voice “added a new fire to the band”, and the album

contained some of Iommi’s “heaviest riffs in years”. Blender gave the album 2 stars, claiming the album was “Black Sabbath in name only”. The album would stall at no.6 in the UK, while peaking at 168 in the US. The band toured in support of Eternal Idol in Germany, Italy and for the first time, Greece. Unfortunately, in part because of a backlash from promoters over the South Africa incident, other European shows were cancelled. Bassist Dave Spitz left the band shortly before the tour, and was replaced by Jo Burt, formerly of Virginia Wolf. Following the poor commercial performance of The Eternal Idol, Black Sabbath were dropped by both Vertigo Records and Warner Bros. Records, and signed with I.R.S. Records. The band took time off in 1988, returning in August to begin work on their next album. As a result of their

recording troubles with Eternal Idol, Tony Iommi opted to produce the band’s next album himself. “It was a complete new start”, Iommi said. “I had to re-think the whole thing, and I made a decision that we needed to build up some credibility again”. Iommi enlisted ex-Rainbow drummer Cozy Powell, long-time keyboardist Nicholls and session bassist Laurence Cottle, and rented a very cheap studio in England. The band released Headless Cross in April 1989, and it was also ignored by contemporary reviewers, although AllMusic contributor Eduardo Rivadavia gave the album 4 stars and called it “the finest non-Ozzy or Dio Black Sabbath album”. Anchored by the number 62 charting single Headless Cross, the album reached no.31 on the UK charts, and no.115 in the US. Queen guitarist Brian May played a guest

solo on the song When Death Calls. Following the album’s release the band added touring bassist Neil Murray, formerly of Whitesnake, Gary Moore’s backing band, and Vow Wow. The unsuccessful Headless Cross US tour began in May 1989 with openers Kingdom Come and Silent Rage, but because of poor ticket sales, the tour was cancelled after just eight shows. The European leg of the tour began in September, where the band were enjoying great success. After a string of Japanese shows the band embarked on a 23 date Russian tour with GirlSchool. Black Sabbath were one of the first bands to tour Russia after Mikhail Gorbachev opened the country to western acts for the first time in 1989. The band returned to the studio in February 1990 to record Tyr, the follow-up to Headless

Cross. While not technically a concept album, some of the album’s lyrical themes are loosely based on Norse mythology. Tyr was released on 6th August 1990, reaching no.24 on the UK albums chart, but was the first Black Sabbath release not to break the billboard 200 in the US. The album would receive mixed reviews, with AllMusic noting that the band “mix myth with metal in a crushing display of musical synthesis”, while Blender gave the album just one star and went on to say that Iommi “continues to besmirch the Sabbath name with unremarkable material”. The band toured in support of Tyr with Circus of Power in Europe, but the final seven UK dates were cancelled because of poor ticket sales. For the first time in their career, the band’s touring cycle did not include US states. The story continues in next month’s edition of Slaney News n

Brooklyn update… With Brooklyn getting 3 Oscar Nominations, the excitement that gripped Enniscorthy during the making of Brooklyn back in 2014 will return in full as the town prepares itself for the 88th Annual Academy Awards on 28 February. B ro o k l y n h a s a l re a d y received widespread international acclaim and is the recipient of many awards since its release back in October and the mouth-watering prospect of three Academy Awards for the film (Best Actress in a Leading Role, Best Picture, Best Adapted Screenplay) is sure to be one of the main topics of conversation in Enniscorthy for the next few weeks. Chairman of Enniscorthy District of Wexford County Council, Councillor Paddy Kavanagh is adamant that the Council will make the most of the film’s Academy Award nominations to showcase the town. “Wexford County Council will continue to do everything possible to properly exploit the fantastic opportunity that the 2016 Academy Awards will provide to us” said Councillor Kavanagh. “We plan to appropriately decorate Enniscorthy in the lead up to the awards ceremony, to remind the public of the very strong and unique association between Brooklyn and Enniscorthy. Penned by our own Colm Toibín, Brooklyn has tremendous potential to help the Council in our constant

efforts to showcase Enniscorthy and to attract shoppers and tourists to this beautiful and historic town.” Enniscorthy District Manager Padraig O’Gorman agrees it is an opportunity not to be missed. “We have already seen a welcome increase in visitor numbers and accommodation bed nights in Enniscorthy as a direct result of Brooklyn and we are confident that there will be a significantly increased visitor interest in Enniscorthy throughout 2016 and beyond, as a result of Brooklyn’s continued success” said Mr. O’Gorman. “Plans are also well under way to develop a ‘Brooklyn Tour’ of Enniscorthy, which will highlight some of the film locations throughout the town including John Street, Castle Street, the Cathedral, the ‘Post Office’ and of course the Athenaeum. We look forward to further developing the tourism potential of Enniscorthy in association with Enniscorthy C h a m b e r o f C o m m e rc e , Enniscorthy Tourism and Visit Wexford” he added. A recent competiton was held for a logo design linking Enniscorthy with the movie and the winning logo will now be used to promote Enniscorthy as the home of Brooklyn. Also, keep an eye out for a new Brooklyn exhibition which will open in Enniscorthy Castle by late April or early May. More details in our future issues.

Local man of the Arts, Donal Cullen, is organising the extras, crew and anyone involved in the Brooklyn movie to get together in Enniscorthy on Oscars night (28th Feb) to watch the Oscars ceremony. Venue to be decided. If interested please contact Donal on 087-6299514. In all the fanfare surrounding Brooklyn it’s easy to forget two other feature films with strong Wexford connections. Staid was shot entirely in Wexford, using an all Wexford cast and crew. It will premiere at the National Opera House on M a rc h 3 rd . B o o k i n g : http://www.nationaloperahouse.ie/whats-on/show/staid. The Hit Producer is a crime thriller with a dark comedic undertone. It was made on a budget of only €18,000 and has won eight awards of excellence at The IndieFEST Film Awards. One of the producers is Wexford’s Barrie Dowdall. n

Haut Couture at Junk kouture Enniscorthy Gift Voucher 10 €

Haut Couture at Junk Couture would certainly be the consensus from both the judges and the huge audience at the Colaiste Bride Fashion Show on Wednesday 20th January as Transition Year students thrilled and wowed those present with their fabulous designs, stunning models and expertly executed dance routines.

The Judges’ Choice - ‘Galanthus’ designed by Zara Byrne, Aine Fortune and Ciara Moulton and modelled by Zara Byrne. Pic: Maria Nolan.

The standard of design was second to none with 27 individual magnificent dresses on display made with recycled everything from jewellery, chains, glass, forks, dollies, spoons, paint, curtain material, plastic bags, chicken wire, teabags, takeaway trays, fishing wire, sweet wrappers, leaves, twigs, mesh wire, piping, buttons, book covers, Christmas baubles, beads and decorations, lace, ribbon and cardboard, tyre tubes, masking tape, feathers, woodchips, polystyrene foam to garden fencing, 1 and 2 cent coins, rice and peppercorns, milk filters, 10 broken guitars and guitar pieces, sally tree branches, a clothes horse, an umbrella, Christmas lights, a lampshade and even an old birdcage! The 27 ensembles were awesome with amazing footwear and head pieces to match which were creations in themselves and would compliment many a well known milliner’s collection and indeed would not be at all out of place at Punchestown, The Curragh, Cheltenham or Ascot. The attention to detail was superlative, the models were cool, confident and captivating, beautifully groomed with hair, makeup and tans applied to perfection and dance moves that would put Madonna and Beyonce in the shade. Each item of high fashion bore the most imaginative titles like – Shattered Dreams, Le Petit Bijou, La Vie en Rose, Grow with the Flow, Un-be-leaf-able, Queen Zalika, Blue Mystique and The Lady and the Tramp. But what was evident above all else was the wonderful talent coupled with the tremendous commitment and Trojan work that went into not alone creating the stunning outfits but into putting on the entire show. This event had the Xfactor! From start to finish it rocked, each garment had a wow aspect and each performer was giving it socks including the interval acts – the brilliant dancers from the Wexford Academy of Irish Dancing and the delightful dancing duo – Kerri Doyle Kinsella and Adam Leacy.

is open to all secondary and grammar school students in the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland. Their challenge is to create an outfit of any shape or form, with the stipulation that it is made from recycled materials. Entrants must get their hands on industrial, electrical, commercial and domestic waste products and transform them into pieces of fashion art. And that is certainly what the students of Colaiste Bride did on Wednesday night. Each fashion piece was a work of art that could easily grace the catwalks of Dublin, Paris or Milan. It must have been a nightmare for the 3 judges to choose a winner but eventually the honour went to Galanthus – a striking vision in white designed by Zara Byrne, Aine Fortune and Ciara Moulton and modelled by Zara and made from 300 milk filters from a dairy farm, 100 buttons, diamantes, a plastic bag, glue and a corset. The Students’ Choice was No.11 – an elegant creation called Banrion Faoi Bhlath designed by Caoimhe Cullen, Lauryn Furlong, Chloe Wilson and modelled by Chloe and made from hand-quilled recycled paper, tights, a cord from a blind, glue, a bra and skirt and parts of a Communion dress. All of these ornate designs will now be professionally photographed and uploaded to www.junkkouture.com along with entries from all over the country and the voting process will begin. There will be four regional heats in Dublin, Derry, Limerick and Castlebar and the Grand Final, featuring the top 80 dresses, will take place in the 3Arena, Dublin, in April.

Local craft businesses to the fore The network of Local enterprise offices unveiled 97 different design and craft businesses all aiming to impress the 5,000 buyers who visited the ‘enterprise Zone’ at Showcase in dublin at the end of January. The small craft and design businesses, representing 22 counties around Ireland, have all been supported by their Local Enterprise Office, making it possible for them to sell to international retail buyers from more than twenty countries such as the US, France, Japan, China and Italy. Wexford was represented by three craft and design businesses within the Enterprise Zone: Kabira allain - Kymaia, Pauline Quigley and aine Breen - Liwu Jewellery. Showcase at the RDS ran from January 24th to 27th and was the first major trade event of the year, organised by the Design & Crafts Council of Ireland and promoted internationally by Enterprise Ireland. The dedicated Enterprise Zone on the balcony area, co-ordinated by the Local Enterprise Offices, has become known as the home for emerging designers and craftspeople in recent years. A wide range of creative sectors was represented within the Enterprise Zone last month, such as ceramics, knitwear, jewellery, interiors, skincare

and giftware. Breege Cosgrave, Senior Business Development Officer from Local Enterprise Office Wexford said before the show: “Thanks to practical business supports through the Local Enterprise Office in the Local Authority, our local craft and design businesses are wellplaced to secure substantial international orders during the four days of Showcase, helping them grow and expand into new markets.” She added: “On a yearround basis, there are lots of other supports available to the craft and design sector locally. These include financial assistance, microfinance loans, trading online vouchers, mentoring, business advice clinics and training programmes, which

are all available through the Local Enterprise Office.” According to figures from Indecon (International Economic Consultants Report October 2013) well over 5,000 people work in the craft sector in Ireland with plenty of opportunities for small companies to grow and for new enterprises to start-up. Karen Hennessy, Chief Executive of the Design & Crafts Council of Ireland said: “We are delighted to be working once again with the Local Enterprise Offices in introducing Irish and international buyers to the latest exciting products from emerging Irish designers and makers at Showcase. This annual trade show, which is now in its 40th

year, is instrumental in promoting Ireland’s well recognised strengths for design and creativity to buyers from Ireland and over 20 countries around the world. I would like to commend and thank the Local Enterprise Offices for supporting small craft and design businesses in participating in the Enterprise Zone at Showcase. The exhibiting companies represent the wealth of creative talent in Ireland today and this dedicated area at Showcase plays a critical role in helping emerging Irish entrepreneurs develop their business and expand their client base.” Further information: www.showcaseireland.com and www.localenterprise.ie n

The 1916 Centenary Programme of Events can be accessed at www.enniscorthy1916.ie Present day reconciliation is ongoing and it is hoped that 2016, the year of the Centenary Commemoration, along with the full implementation of the Good Friday Agreement will eventually lead to a spirit of openness and honesty and a genuine reconciliation on the island of Ireland. The road to its realisation will have many turns and byroads and its achievement could lead inevitably to a form of a United Ireland. Another present day positive indication is the growing friendly relations between Ireland and Britain helped no doubt by the remarkable image of the English Monarch and Head of State, Queen Elizabeth II, laying a wreath and bowing h e r h e a d a t t h e G a rd e n o f Remembrance. Back to 1916 – on Thursday morning the 27th April 1916 about 200 Volunteers marched up from Keegan’s house in Irish Street, Enniscorthy, through the Market Square under the command of Vice-Commandant P.P. Galligan and took possession of The Athenaeum where they set up their Headquarters. Séamus Ó ’ D u b h g h a i l l re a d t h e Proclamation. The Tricolour was hoisted over The Athenaeum by Una Brennan, Marion Stokes and Greta Comerford and was saluted by a firing squad under the com-

Thus began the 1916 rising in Enniscorthy and by Saturday news of the general surrender in Dublin reached the Volunteers in The Athenaeum and they insisted that the surrender be verified: the following day the British escorted Capt. Séamus Ó’Dubhghaill and Capt. Seán R. Etchingham to Dublin to consult Pádraig Pearse in his cell in Arbour Hill Prison. On Monday, 1st May, the Enniscorthy Volunteers surre n d e re d u n c o n d i t i o n a l l y. Enniscorthy was the only urban centre outside Dublin to rise in 1916 which ensured the continuance of Wexford’s proud record of resistance to foreign rule. Some pundits and others want us to give equal treatment of remembrance to the forces of Empire. Our primary allegiance must be to the Volunteers who fought for our freedom against superior forces of the British Army. This country should not officially grant 'parity of esteem' to the Volunteers of 1916 and to the British Army, the same British Army who fought our freedom fighters and who ruthlessly cracked down on the Rising and executed

its leaders. British soldiers killed imposing colonial rule throughout the world are not commemorated by the former colonised. Yes, the Government should seriously consider a special Independence Day; if the French can have a Bastille Day, surely we can have a ‘GPO Day’. Jingling tills shouldn’t be the final arbiter of such an important decision. Much speculation has been voiced over the years as to why so many Irishmen joined the British Army and fought in World War 1. Our common nationality should allow us to admire their courage and the sacrifices they made on foreign battlefields, many of them never to return to their homeland. Their involvement in the war of 1914-1918 touched many families in Ireland and the anguish of their heart-rending losses was painful and distressing. The Rising is a historic fact and no amount of debate or argument can change the details of its happening and aftermath. The leaders were high-minded, idealistic and behaved with great dignity when they met their tragic destiny. Just one example and I

quote the statement of MajorGeneral Charles Blackader, President of the Courts-Martial, giving an account of Pádraig Pearse, “i have just done one of the hardest tasks i have ever had to do; i have had to condemn to death one of the finest characters i have ever come across. There must be something very wrong in the state of things that makes a man like that a rebel.” The Enniscorthy leaders were also remarkable individuals. Apparently, none of the leaders attempted to escape but all faced up to the fate that awaited them: for some almost immediate execution. All nations need their chronicles of origin ensconced safely in the archives. People require a story to connect them together, to merge their identity and venture a vision of what they represent in the wider world. For us, the 1916 Rising is much more than a narrative: it is the historic certainty that represents the birth of our contemporary nation state, one that can now stride out with self-esteem on the global stage. Let us hope that all the events of remembrance programmed

here this evening will inspire us with pride in such heroic people and that we will all help to create a future worthy of their sacrifice and their Proclamation. I’ll conclude by quoting the last stanza of the famous poem of William Butler Yeats: eaSTer 1916 Too long a sacrifice Can make a stone of the heart. O when may it suffice? That is Heaven’s part, our part To murmur name upon name, As a mother names her child When sleep at last has come On limbs that had run wild. What is it but nightfall? No, no, not light but death; Was it needless death after all? For England may keep faith For all that is done and said. We know their dream; enough To know they dreamed and are dead; And what if excess of love Bewildered them till they died? I write it out in a verse – MacDonagh and MacBride And Connolly and Pearse Now and in time to be, Wherever green is worn, Are changed, changed utterly: A terrible beauty is born. – William Butler Yeats 25 September 1916.

new Funding announced in January… Fine gael Td for wexford, Minister Paul Kehoe, has said that the announcement of €4,000,000 for nursing homes in wexford will make a significant difference for elderly people in our communities. “Gorey District Hospital (€3.5m) and the New Haughton Hospital (€0.5m) in New Ross are to receive €4million in funding for upgrades and refurbishment.” Minister Paul Kehoe has said that new national funding of €106 million to repair and protect roads affected by flood damage will come as a relief to residents in wexford. “County Wexford roads are going to benefit from this new €106 million fund for flood damaged roads. This funding allocation is in addition to the €11,324,011 announced for County Wexford earlier this week, to be used for general road improvement and maintenance works on local and regional roads.” “i am very pleased to confirm that wexford is to receive €5,045,000 in funding by the department of environment, community and Local government towards social housing”, said Minister Paul Kehoe. “The Dept of the Environment has confirmed that two projects have received approval for funding to proceed with their submission to construct eight housing units in Cherry Orchard, Enniscorthy, two in Oilgate, one on the Ross Road, Enniscorthy, and 28 in Clonard, Wexford.” n

A busy year for L.E.O. 2015 was a busy year for the Local enterprise office (Leo) based in wexford county council. Here’s a short snapshot of the work they’ve been doing over the past 12 months to help SMes in co. wexford start, create jobs, and grow. The Wexford LEO allocated a total of €406,798 in grants in 2015 to businesses at every stage of development. These included 8 Feasibility Grants, 7 Priming Grants, and 11 Business Expansion Grants. In 2015, 945 people attended over 81 training events and workshops organised by the LEO. From Exporting, Social Media, and Customer Service, to Bookkeeping, Train the Trainer, and much more, their suite of training courses caters for everyone who's looking to learn that little bit extra and give themselves the edge as they work to build their business.

Tom Banville, Head of the Local Enterprise Office in Wexford

Wexford LEO also facilitated 309 Mentor meetings in 2015 between new businesses and experienced business mentors. In 2015 Wexford LEO allocated 38 Trading Online Vouchers (to help companies set up their e-commerce systems), 20 Trade Show Grants (to help

Wexford companies be seen where they need to be seen), and 12 Export Marketing Grants (to help expanding Wexfordbased businesses reach bigger markets abroad). Wexford LEO sponsored the 'Best Start Up Business' award at the Wexford Business Awards in June 2015. This award had more nominees than any other award! Another indicator of the healthy entrepreneurial spirit in the county was the large number of entries Wexford LEO had for the County Wexford section of Ireland’s Best Young Entrepreneur Competition (41 in all, up from 2014). Also there was the largest ever number of students (1,256) taking part in the Student Enterprise Programme in second level schools around the county this year. n

On the jobs front… Fine gael Td for wexford, Minister Paul Kehoe, has said that a drop of 11.47% in the Live register in 2015 in wexford is a strong indication that the recovery is beginning to be felt locally. “The Live Register fell by 11.47% in Wexford between December 2014 and December 2015. This significant drop indicates that the recovery is beginning to take hold here in Wexford and that people are getting back to work. “From January 1st USC rates for low to middle income earners have been cut from 7% to 5.5%, reducing the tax rate to below 50%. The entry point into USC has also been increased to €13,000, bringing to 700,000 the number of people who do not pay USC. “These changes to the USC, which will help spread the benefits of the recovery and

Building on Enniscorthy’s ‘Brooklyn’ The January meeting of the Enniscorthy & District Chamber of Commerce was held at Riverside Park Hotel with the members making a strong statement of support for the new Flood defence Scheme, recording their appreciation for Engineer Larry McHale who is liaising with the Chamber on all flood-related works. The Chamber welcomed the announcement that the first of these works are scheduled to begin at the end of the year and complimented the business people of the town affected by the recent floods for their fortitude and resilience in returning to normal day-to-day business with great haste. The Chamber complimented the staff of enniscorthy castle for the magical wonderland created with Santa at the Castle and enniscorthy re-enactment group for their dignified and moving portrayal of the Christmas 1914 Truce at Market Square on Saturday 19th December and

wished them well with their preparations for 2016 Commemorations. The Chamber took a new, enterprising initiative to establish a Brooklyn committee for the town with Cathy Keane of Heritage Tours Wexford at the helm in an effort to capitalise on the success of the film and

to promote Enniscorthy as the Home of Brooklyn. Other members of the new committee include Jean O’Connell, Richie Cotter, Margot Hogan, Maree Lyng and Moira Fowler who set to work immediately organising a logo competition to come up with a unique design for stickers, flags, bags, signage

etc., to enhance the Enniscorthy Home of Brooklyn theme. Other ideas emanating from the meeting include ‘Rose’s Bench’ which is to be erected at Ned Kavanagh’s garage where both Rose and Saoirse Ronan sat and ‘we hope and anticipate visitors will want to pose for photos there’ enthused an excited Cathy Keane, ‘this is our chance to put Enniscorthy on the map’ she went on ‘and speaking of maps we are also planning to develop a Brooklyn Town Map where visitors can walk in the footsteps of Eilis Lacey.’ And there is even talk about a Brooklyn Bridge for Enniscorthy! Chairman John Burke O`Leary closed the meeting saying that Brooklyn could do for Enniscorthy what the Quiet Man did for Cong and took the opportunity on behalf of the Chamber and all of the people of Enniscorthy to wish Colm Toibin, Saoirse Ronan and Brooklyn the very best of luck at the Oscars. – Maria Nolan

will ensure that hard work pays, were opposed by Fianna Fáil; the high tax party. “Since the launch of the Action Plan for Jobs, the live Register in Wexford has fallen by 26.86%. Nationally, over 135,000 jobs have been created, two thirds of which have been outside of Dublin. More people at work create the resources to cut taxes for working people and to invest in better services. “Fine Gael has committed to eliminating the USC altogether during the term of the next Government.” Minister Kehoe also revealed that 4,696 jobs in co. wexford are being supported by 123 enterprise ireland supported companies. Minister Kehoe believes that the Enterprise Ireland figures for 2015 show that the Government’s job creation plan is working in Wexford. “These companies created 184 additional new jobs in Wexford in 2015, an increase of 4% on the previous year. “Over 400 additional new EI jobs have been created in Wexford since the launch of the Government’s Action Plan for Jobs. “This job creation is having an important knock on impact. For every job created in an EI supported company, it is esti-

mated that one additional job is created elsewhere in the economy, so approximately another 400 indirect jobs have been created in Wexford since the launch of the Government’s Action Plan for Jobs. “All of the regions recorded increases in full-time employment in 2015. Our Regional Action Plans for Jobs are designed to increase employment in every region by 1015% between now and 2020. “Fine Gael has a plan to keep the recovery going and ensure that everyone can feel the benefit. Crucial to this is continued job creation. Having more people in work creates the resources to cut taxes for working people and invest in better services… We will finish the job and replace all the jobs lost in the crash to ensure a better quality of life for all in Wexford.” n

Landmark rates case wexford county council has secured a landmark decision in the High court in relation to outstanding commercial rates. The Council has been successful in a petition to the High Court to appoint a liquidator to DJBD Property Management Limited, 16 Woodbine Business Park, New Ross, following failure by the company to pay Commercial Rates in respect of their property in Woodbine Business Park, New Ross. The Council has taken this unprecedented action following a long history of outstanding rates and a lack of engagement by the company in dealing with the matter. At the High Court hearing on 16th December 2015, Mr Justice O’Connor, following a fully contested hearing, ordered that the company, DJBD, be wound up and that David Dowling of Sheil Kinnear & Co be appointed liquidator. The costs in the case have been awarded to the Council. It is reported that the Court, in summing up their judgement, referred to the lack of

Mr Tom Enright, Chief Executive of Wexford County Council

response and engagement on the company’s behalf, to the lack of regard to the County Council and to the “worrying smoke screen” put up by the company by way of defence, commenting that the Council “should not be at the mercy of a company like DJBD”. Mr Tom Enright, Chief Executive of Wexford County Council, stated that the action taken is not a path the Council has taken lightly and was a direct result of the lack of engage-

ment by the company in relation to outstanding rates. He added that the Council had a responsibility to the other ratepayers in the county and in particular those businesses in the New Ross area that are operating in direct competition with this business, to address the outstanding debt. Mr Enright pointed out that the Council continues to work with ratepayers in offering realistic options for paying rates and rates arrears and have payment plans in place where real difficulties are proven. In addition the Council has further extended their Rates Incentive Scheme which offers a discount to ratepayers who are paying their annual rates. However, where a business is operating in competition with other businesses and does not make any attempt to meet their statutory responsibility to pay commercial rates, Wexford County Council is prepared to take legal action up to and including High Court action to secure the debt which provides essential funding for local services. n

Figures lodged with the Companies Office show that operational profits increased by €1.4 million to over €2 million on 2013 which, following bank repayments, resulted in a net cash balance increase of €126,000 on 2013. CEO of the group, Michael Griffin, said “The 2014 accounts are a fantastic achievement for everyone within our group and

represent a further step forward in our recovery plan. We have over the last number of years had to make tough choices but the 2014 figures continue to show the benefits of these essential measures resulting in a group operational profit of just over €2 million in 2014.” Michael and Liam Anthony thanked all management and staff within the group for their commitment and participation in what Michael referred to as an audacious organisational transformation. n

Funding for animal welfare

PET aPPRovEd

VET DIARY FOR FEB. with the Moyne Veterinary Clinic

This month, Don Goggin looks at some topical items… In the past week there has been a lot of controversy surrounding the lambs being placed in the ‘lamb carousel’ on ‘The Late Late Show’. The two lambs showed no signs of distress during the segment, however it is easy to see why there was some negative reaction to it. This is not the image of the baby lamb that everyone imagines at this time of year. It is good to see people trying to lessen the stress of the required tagging procedures required by law on the animal. The whole event has served as a reminder to everyone that spring is upon us. As the new crop of lambs and calves begin to return to the fields over the coming weeks it is critical to always know where your dog is. Too often we see truly distressed sheep when normally docile and loving dogs have run or attacked them when two or more of them get together in a field of sheep. More unusually this week we saw a case in Cork where two cows lost both their ears in a dog attack while they were eating in a shed. Thankfully the Christmas period passed without any cases of chocolate poisoning in dogs. January however has seen numerous cases of dogs eating rat poison. As the weather has now turned colder with frosty nights it is important to make sure antifreeze is not spilled or leaking where cats and dogs have access. Often it is a puddle contaminated with antifreeze that is the culprit in this poisoning. It can be recognised by the animal appearing like it is drunk initially from 30 minutes to 12 hours after ingesting the antifreeze. They can briefly recover before becoming a lot sicker again as the ethylene glycol begins to affect the kidneys and liver. It is always a case to bring your animal to the clinic for immediate treatment. If you suspect your pet has ingested any toxic substance contact us immediately. We have seen a lot of puppies and kittens in the last month also for their initial and final vaccinations. Remember that any puppy or kitten needs a highly digestible puppy/kitten food for between 9 and 18 months depending on the age each breed reaches its mature body size. Worm treatments need to be carried out every 2 weeks until they are 3 months old then monthly from 3 months old to 6 months old and every 3 months once they have reached 6 months. Finally don’t forget that all puppies born from September 1st 2015 must be microchipped. Please contact us or call into the clinic for any advice you may need. – Don Goggin MVB BAgrSc

animal welfare is very much in the headlines following the recent removal of over 200 dogs from a rural dwelling in the Ferns area. a considerable number of these dogs had to be put to sleep on humane grounds after consultations with animal welfare inspectors and vets, while around 60 dogs were taken by the wSPca, nwSPca and dogs Trust for possible rehoming. So the recent announcement by Fine Gael TD for Wexford, Minister Paul Kehoe, of an allocation of €121,000 in funding for animal welfare organisations in Wexford is a welcome one. This funding is part of a €2.5 million grant from the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine, for 140 organisations nationally. The local organisations to receive funding are: n Chipper's Sanctuary, The Avenue, Clonattin Village, Gorey, Co Wexford €5,000. n Dublin Husky Rescue, E m y v a l e , Ti n t e s k i n , Kilmuckridge, Gorey, Co Wexford €2,500.

“These organisations do really valuable work for animal welfare in our community. They look after the pets owned by people who perhaps cannot afford expensive treatments, surgeries and general pet care. “As well as caring for pets, they also perform a valuable educational role by promoting responsible pet ownership. Pet owners are made aware of the benefits of having pets neutered, vaccinated and microchipped which was made mandatory for all dogs from early 2016 onwards. “The economic recovery has allowed for increased funding to services such as this that are a direct support to vulnerable groups in our society. Fine Gael has a plan to keep the recovery going to ensure that we can continue to invest in better public services and ensure everyone in Wexford feels the benefit. “For anyone concerned about incidences of pet cruelty they can contact the dedicated helpline in the Department of Agriculture on 01 607 2379.” n

The future for Rosslare Harbour Europort wexford county council has engaged arup consulting engineers to complete the design of the proposed n25 access road to rosslare Harbour europort. The contract for the detailed design of this major road scheme was signed last month by wexford county council and arup, bringing the construction of another hugely important section of county wexford’s national road infrastructure significantly closer to realisation. The new access route, which is expected to cost in excess of €10 million, is approximately 1.8km in length and includes three roundabouts and a number of at-grade junctions. The route commences with a roundabout mid way between Kilrane and Rosslare Harbour, following the line of the existing link road to Station Road to another major roundabout at Ballygerry. The proposed road then bridges the railway line and continues to its termination point in the Europort with a third roundabout. Chief Executive of Wexford County Council, Tom Enright, speaking early last month said that this project is a most welcome development for Wexford. “With the M11 Enniscorthy Bypass already underway, the N25 New Ross Bypass con-

tract to be signed within weeks and with national gas on its way to Wexford within the next three months, County Wexford is well placed to grow and develop as a highly attractive location for inward investment, business and enterprise” said Mr. Enright. It is envisaged that topographical surveys, ground investigations and traffic surveys will be carried out in February and March 2016, to be followed by detailed design of the route. Meanwhile, cllr Johnny Mythen wants a “renewed vision for rosslare europort”: He says that development of the N25 access road to Rosslare Europort is an important step on the road to developing the port for both business and tourism, and as a vibrant hub for the south east. “Over one million visitors per year pass through Rosslare Europort. However, we really need a renewed vision for the relatively neglected port, and of course a huge investment by the government. This will in turn reap dividends for the south east in the long term.” The election hopeful added: “The port currently employs over seventy people directly, and there are thousands employed indirectly as a result of the knock-on effects generated by

tourism, logistics and the freight industry. The port could employ far more people if it was deepened and expanded, and if retail services were developed. “However, there is a necessity for the extension and deepening of the port which currently has 7.2m of water. This needs to be increased to 11m in depth to allow larger freight traffic (such as the expected Chinese vessels) to use Rosslare. To further this, a rail cargo depot could be built at the harbour which would facilitate the logistics business and help divert heavy traffic from the public road network. It could in turn lead to the reopening of the Rosslare to Waterford rail line. Coupled with tourism promotion, particularly with the French market through initiatives such as the impending development of County Wexford Norman Way, it would all create badlyneeded employment.” n

View from the Hill General election

As this column is being put together the date of the general election has not been announced. However, we do know that it is just around the corner and by the time you read it things may have been clarified. Regardless of the uncertainty of the actual day the list of candidates for the Wexford constituency is fairly well known. Fine Gael are running Paul Kehoe, Micheal D’arcy and Julie Hogan. Fianna Fail hopefuls are James Browne, Malcolm Byrne and Aoife Byrne. Labour’s Brendan Howlin is standing again a s i s M i c k Wa l l a c e a s a n Independent. Sinn Fein have declared Johnny Mythen and the Mayor of Wexford Ger Carthy is standing as an Independent.

Leonard Kelly is standing as a representative of the newly formed Social Democrats. Deirdre Wadding is the People Before Profit representative on the ballot paper. David Llyod is running for Direct Democracy Ireland, Ann Walsh for the Green Party, Caroline Foxe Emmett Maloney and Paul Hanlon are running as Independents. Wexford is one of the easier constituencies to predict despite the uncertainty of the outcome at national level. Over the years as a five seater it has tended to go two Fianna Fail, two Fine Gael and one Labour. Liam Twomey caused an upset back in 2002 by being elected as an Independent but soon reverted to form and joined Fine Gael. Up to 2011 therefore

nothing much seemed to change. Then two things coincided. The electorate decided to practically eliminate Fianna Fail nationally which caused the loss of one of its seats in Wexford. John Browne held on mostly because of his local work rate and the personal esteem in which he was, and indeed still is, held. Also enter Mick Wallace who stunned everyone by not only being elected but by heading the poll. Since his election Wallace has done more than anyone else in Dail Eireann to expose corruption within certain areas of the gardai and also highlight issues relating to NAMA which he thinks should be investigated. Of course he has his critics and indeed his faults but as an Independent TD he has properly used his position as a national legislator to raise matters of concern to a great many people. It would be highly unlikely that Wallace would not be re-elected to Dail Eireann. Brendan Howlin as Minister for Public Expenditure and Reform is one of the most senior members of the present government. This is a double edged sword for him as there are positives and negatives. The negatives are that he not only presided over, but was one of the architects of, much of the austerity which has been imposed on us over the past five years. Many people will not for-

“… highly unlikely that [Mick] Wallace would not be re-elected to Dáil Éireann”

give Labour for the broken promises of 2011. The positives are that he has certainly delivered to the constituency and will be hoping that this will pay off when people go to vote. Labour nationally will suffer meltdown but Howlin should survive here in Wexford although Sinn Fein’s Johnny Mythen and PBP Deirdre Wadding will take a considerable vote which in times past would have been Labour. Paul Kehoe, as a Junior Minister and Government Chief Whip, was also in a pivotal position to deliver to Wexford. To be fair he hasn’t been behind the door in using his influence to assist Enniscorthy and other areas of Wexford over the past five years. He too, of course, voted consistently with the government in relation to

all measures such as water charges, changing the qualification criteria for pensions to the disadvantage of pensioners, and other measures which we term as austerity. It would appear that his presence in the Dail is regarded as beneficial in the main and to give him credit he has never lost the run of himself. He is very approachable and will deal with any matter, however small in global terms, to the satisfaction of the constituent. Despite the competition from Micheal D’Arcy in his own party and the presence of Johnny Mythen on his doorstep I think that he will make it back. Fianna Fail will take at least one seat in this constituency and my bet is that this will go to James Browne. Their other candidate Malcolm Byrne is a very able individual but being based in the north of the county is a disadvantage. Furthermore, it’s only natural that the countywide support that John Browne built up over 30 years will now pay off for James. What he does after that will be down to himself but this time it’s highly likely that John’s support will hold up and deliver him to the Dail. That only leaves one seat to be decided if my predictions are correct. I believe that this will be a dogfight between D’Arcy, Malcolm Byrne and Johnny Mythen. If voting preferences follow a natural pattern I would expect the elimination

of such people as Leonard Kelly, Deirdre Wadding and Ger Carthy to assist Mythen who should be significantly ahead of each of them on the first count. Carthy’s vote could go all over the place as he is not really a left wing candidate and may not be of much benefit to Sinn Fein. Of the two Gorey candidates, Fine Gael’s D’Arcy and Fianna Fail’s Byrne, D’Arcy, as an outgoing Oireachtas member, should be the stronger. In fact it could easily happen that D’Arcy would be where I put Paul Kehoe and those roles could be reversed although I don’t think so. Of the three contenders I believe that D’Arcy will be the victor. Byrne and Mythen will be there on the tail of the second Fine Gael candidate but won’t quite make it. Therefore I call it, not necessarily in this order, Wallace, Howlin, Kehoe, Browne and D’Arcy. The most important thing for us to remember is that regardless of our feelings towards parties or independents or individual candidates we should all go out and vote. Every single vote counts and if we forfeit or waste our privilege to cast it we lose our right to complain or comment on what’s happening in our country. n We are often asked: Who is the “View from the Hill” columnist? All we can say is that the author’s surname is NOT Doyle!

The 3,927 on the housing list, the highest figure ever in the County, is broken down as follows per District Enniscorthy 817, Gorey 988, New Ross 695, Wexford 1427. Malcolm pointed out that at almost 1,000 people on the list in Gorey that this represented a 50% increase in the last five years. He added that the solution means building more houses and called on the Government to release money promised to Wexford County Council to allow this to happen. That is individuals and families often waiting for years for somewhere to live with a bit of permanence. The housing crisis, including the inability of young couples and families to be able to raise the deposit to buy a home; the enormous difficulties in the rental market and the homelessness scandal, is the biggest issue being faced by politicians right now." Fianna Fáil General election candidate for Wexford cllr James Browne has criticised the government for forcing rural GP practices to close following years of cutbacks to primary care supports. Cllr Browne commented, “This Fine Gael and Labour Government will be remembered for the way it has decimated services in rural Ireland. Under this government we have seen the closure of Garda stations, post offices, local bank branches and small schools. Now they are attacking rural GP practices. It seems they won’t be satisfied until all services have been removed from rural Ireland. “There are a number of steps the HSE needs to take in order to tackle the reduction of GP services in rural areas. One immediate measure that should be taken is to increase the Rural GP Allowance. This is a spe-

CRIME… Fine Gael tD for Wexford, minister Paul Kehoe, has said that the new criminal Justice (Burglary of Dwellings) act 2015 will help keep repeat burglars off the streets of county Wexford and improve the safety of our community. Statistics provided by the Garda Síochána show that 75% of burglaries are committed by 25% of burglars. This important Act allows for bail to be denied, and consecutive sentences to be given, to repeat burglars. “It’s my hope that the act will reduce crime rates in Wexford and will be a key weapon in the battle against crime.” “The new Burglary Act also provides an important additional layer of support to Gardaí in implementing Operation Thor. These new provisions for tougher sentences and stricter

bail for repeat offenders will now be available when persons charged as part of Operation Thor come before the courts. Operation Thor, which was launched in November 2015, is a multi-strand national anticrime and anti-burglary operation. It involves a broad range of activities to tackle crime, particularly burglaries. “This Government has reopened Templemore after it was closed by Fianna Fáil; €46 million has been allocated for Garda vehicles, many of which will be high-power vehicles for targeted operations; €18 million is being provided for the refurbishment of Garda stations and €205 million has been invested in new technology for An Garda Síochána. This is part of an unprecedented allocation of €875 million in capital funding for the Justice sector.” n

caroline gets motoring skoda superb review by Caroline Kidd

the superb is the flagship model of the skoda range and is back on a new platform and with a new dynamic design. the skoda superb’s big selling point has always been good pricing and lots of space, but skoda has worked hard to give the new superb a more high-end feel overall. The new styling is inspired by the Skoda VisionC concept car and it’s the best looking Superb yet. The interior is really well-finished with a simple, attractive design. Equipment levels are high and entry level cars get electric windows and mirrors, emergency city brake, cruise control, dual zone climate control, Bluetooth and a 5” touchscreen, though you need to step up a trim level for alloy wheels. It’s also absolutely enormous inside. The new Superb is a bit taller, wider and longer than the car it replaces. It’s most noticeable in the back where rear passengers can really stretch their legs out. There’s only one word for it – stately. The boot is now 30 litres bigger than before and packs in a huge 625 litres with the rear seats up. To live up to the Skoda ‘Simply Clever’ tagline, there are neat touches everywhere like the umbrella in the driver and passenger doors on some models, a cupholder that grips a bottle so you can open it with one hand, an ice scraper inside the fuel cap, and Velcro

shopping dividers and a removable torch in the boot. T h e re ’ s a n e x t e n s i v e engine range for the new Superb including 1.4-litre (125bhp) and 2.0-litre (280bhp) turbo petrols, and 1.6-litre (120bhp) and 2.0-litre (150bhp or 190bhp) turbo diesels. Manual or automatic gearboxes are available and there’s also the option of four wheel drive. My test car was powered by the 2.0-litre diesel with 150bhp and it’s got plenty of pull in it for a big car like this, breaking the 10 second barrier in a sprint from 0 to 100kmh (it will do it in 8.8 seconds). It’s a bit grumbly under hard acceleration, but settles down well for cruising. On the road there is a bit more road noise than what I

would expect from a large car, but the Superb is very comfortable and assured for long trips on the motorway. The handling and steering response do not feel particularly sporty, but it does feel very predictable and safe in the corners. There are four trim levels (Active, Ambition, Style and L&K) and the range starts at €26,795 for a petrol model. Diesels start at €27,795. My test car with the 2.0-litre 150bhp diesel in Style trim came in at a more hefty €35,895 but included a full leather interior, electrically adjustable, heated front seats, parking sensors, rear view camera, tri zone climate control and an 8” touchscreen including navigation. Skoda has really upped the ante with the new Superb.

The brand has had high aspirations for its cars for many years now, and the new Superb really looks like the car that can deliver on these aspirations. For an entry price of less than €30,000, you get so much car – so much rear leg room, so much boot space, and plenty of equipment. The fact that this car has a highend cabin and is sleeker and more striking to look at than before – well that’s just the icing on the cake! model tested: Skoda Superb 2.0-litre TDI (150bhp) Style Price: €35,895 Engine: 2.0-litre turbo diesel Power: 150bhp 0-100km/h: 8.8 seconds Economy: 68.9mpg CO2 Emissions: 108g/km Motor Tax: €190 per year n

small car round-up by Caroline Kidd this month i’m going to give you a round-up of some of the best of what’s out there when it comes to buying a small car. I’ll start with the Ford Fiesta because it was Ireland’s bestselling supermini in 2015. It’s really good to drive and is only let down by an interior that’s starting to look a bit long in the tooth compared to rivals. My money would be on the 1.0-litre EcoBoost (65bhp) petrol in Zetec trim for €16,850. Another Irish favourite is the opel corsa and currently the holder of Irish Small Car Of The Year title. It’s a good all-rounder and is particularly strong in terms of the interior design and finish. The new 1.0-litre turbo petrol is excellent but with prices starting upwards of €19,000,

Honda Jazz

a bit of an indulgence. More wallet-friendly is the 1.4-litre petrol with 90bhp. A five door in Excite trim is €16,495. Another favourite of mine is the seat ibiza, reviewed in these pages last month. It’s good value and good looking, and a middle of the road 5-door SE model with a 1.0-

litre 75bhp petrol engine comes in at €15,420. The skoda Fabia is spacious and well-priced and costs €15,895 for a 1.0-litre petrol Ambition model. One of the most impressive small cars I drove last year was the new honda Jazz. There’s just the one engine, a

1.3-litre petrol and the Jazz starts at €17,395 for an SE model. That might look a bit expensive but the car is actually really well-specced and there’s cabin and boot space rivalling a larger car. Last but not least, there’s the Volkswagen Polo, another Irish favourite. Again it is on the expensive side but the quality and refinement is really unrivalled in this segment. I drove a 1.4 TDI diesel last year that would make an ideal commuter car. It’s spacious inside too. A 1.0-litre petrol powered Polo in Fun trim has a list price of €17,475, while a 1.4 diesel in the same trim comes in at €19,500. If you want to splurge a little on a small car and pay upwards of €20,000 for something a bit fancier, there’s the audi a1 and mini hatch. n

Rebelliion – with Enniscorthy’s Charlie Murphy in front,

‘rEbEllioN’ – far froM thE truth rte’s drama ‘rebellion’ is far from what actually happened in 1916 – only some of it is true to life and to what actually happened in 1916. ‘rebellion’ is more like a soap opera than a drama. Here are some of the good points about it – it’s well acted and well scripted and well put together and the fight scenes are spectacular. Last week we saw Tom Clarke being stripped and mocked by Captain Wilson. This did indeed happen and Michael Collins said that some day he would fix that bastard and he did – Wilson was shot in Gorey in 1920.

Some bad points – too much sex, and it is focusing too much on the three women in the story. Also in the first episode Pearse shot an RIC officer dead, in fact Pearse never fired a single shot in the Rising. Pearse would never have shot anyone, he gave the orders. Next up for RTE is a follow -up series on the Civil War which will be screened in May. Also TV3 will be doing a 1916 drama on what would have happened if the leaders were tried in court and not executed. This TV drama will star Tom Vaughan Lawlor and Aoibhinn McGinnity of ‘Love Hate’ fame. – Joseph Doyle

‘WEXFORD HAS TALENT’ ORGANISING COMMITTEE

The four-star Talbot Hotel Collection on January 12th announced the addition of the ‘Stonebridge’ building on Paul’s Quay in Wexford town to its hotel portfolio. The building features 73-luxury apartments located less than 100 metres from the four-star family owned Talbot Hotel on Wexford’s quayside. It will, according to the new owners, become a Talbot Hotel Collection Aparthotel. Stonebridge was developed as a lavish complex; it was completed in 2008, however it was never opened for public use. It features 73 partly finished exclusive apartments, which are ideally suited for spacious family holidays, luxury breaks and executive stays. The building also features a 314 space multi-storey car park enabling the new owners to offer private parking with direct access to the hotel-serviced apartments. Guests will also have access to the pool and leisure centre and food and beverage services at the adjacent Talbot Hotel. The expansive modern building situated on just over two acres in the centre of Wexford town also includes over 4,000 square metres of retail space along with an exquisitely refurbished six-storey former grain store listed building. Two further retail buildings are also included in the sale, a three-storey at 89 South Main Street and a further building at Pierce Court. Commenting on the acquisition, owner of the Talbot Hotel Collection Cormac Pettitt said, “We are delighted to have purchased this fantastic development in the heart of Wexford town, it is a very exciting opportunity for the company. Our plans are to invest a further €2.5million to complete these luxury apartments and welcome guests by the middle of this year. This is a major acquisition for the company and we are very much looking forward to bringing life back to this amazing development; the views alone are enough to make guests fall in love with Wexford town.” The aparthotel property adjoins Oyster Lane where some 70 years ago Cormac Pettitt’s grandfather Jack Pettitt established the family’s first supermarket in 1946. The Wexford based hotel group operates The Talbot Hotels in Wexford town, Carlow and Stillorgan and during 2014 added The Oriel House Hotel and The Midleton Park Hotel to its hotel portfolio along with the Dome Entertainment Centre, a property adjacent to The Talbot Hotel Carlow. The parent company of The Talbot Hotel group also operates six Pettitt’s SuperValu stores across Wexford, Wicklow and Kildare. The Talbot Hotel Collection currently employs more than 600 people at their Wexford, Carlow, Dublin and Cork hotels. It is thought that 20 new fulltime positions will be created at the aparthotel in Wexford and an additional 40 contract positions will also be created during the renovation phase until the official opening in early summer 2016. n

Colm Toibin International Short Story Arts Snippets… Award and a 1916 Poem for Enniscorthy WEXFORD FESTIVAL OPERA FUNDING Focal, Wexford literary Festival, in conjunction with local poet John Kelly, have launched a new Poetry competition – a 1916 poem for Enniscorthy. This competition is sponsored by John Kelly in memory of his late father, Jack Kelly, a great lover of poetry and an avid collector of 1916 memorabilia. ‘Nothing could be more appropriate in his memory’, John said, ‘and the timing is just perfect. A lot of literary material exists in Enniscorthy in the form of poetry, prose and song connected to 1798 – most of it being composed 100 years after Vinegar Hill. Well 100 years on from The Rising the time is right to create the same literary legacy for 1916.’ The theme of the competition is 1916 and in particular Enniscorthy 1916, whatever that may mean to you. Submissions can be made online to the Focal website, or by email to kellyjj02@gmail.com or by hand or post to Enniscorthy Library.

Fine Gael TD for Wexford, Minister Paul Kehoe, has welcomed the announcement in January by the Minister of State for Tourism and Sport, Michael Ring, that €110,000 has been allocated for Wexford Festival Opera in 2016. This is part of Fáilte Ireland‘s national funding of just over €1.8 million for 23 key national festivals and

events. “Wexford Festival Opera is a hugely popular event in Wexford and further afield. This event has grown in recent years and is attracting more and more tourists to the area. Funding of €110,000 will help to grow the festival further and to continue to plan for the future.” n

A few thoughts in praise of a forgotten people…

Paha saPa (the Black hills) by anne Mccormack The white man made us promises But only one he kept He took my Paha Sapa And the Great Sioux Nations wept. My name is Tatanka Yotanka Known as the Sitting Bull The whites are now our enemies We must fight to survive the cull. The Indian Nations philosophy Take only what you need But the gold in Paha Sapa Has turned their hearts to greed. It ended at Little Big Horn In the valley of the greasy grass When 'Yellow Hair' came marching His soldiers fell thick and fast. I did not know then how much had ended There in the bloody mud That June when the chokecherries ripened The year was '76. My people's dream died that day It was a beautiful dream But the white man wanted our Sacred Place Paha Sapa and cared nothing for our Race. n
