All of County Wexford, and particularly the town of Enniscorthy, is looking forward to the upcoming 1916 Centenary Commemorations. Enniscort hy has b een selected as one of the few locations outside Dublin where a National State Ceremony will take place in commemoration of the 1916 Rising. This reflects the crucial role played by Enniscorthy during Easter Week 1916. Local events commemorating 1916 have been ongoing for several months but the highlight will undoubtedly be on

Easter Monday 28th March. The day gets under way at 10am and runs to 7pm with the State Commemoration starting at 12.30pm and involving a synchronised wreath laying ceremony at 1.15pm, the time the first shots of the 1916 Rising were fired. Easter Monday 2016 will be a historic occasion in Enniscorthy with thousands expected to flock to the town to be part of this once-in-a-lifetime occasion. We carry the full programme details on page 18 inside with some additional news on page 6. n

comment Congratulations to the five newly elected TDs for Co. Wexford including the two Enniscorthy based representatives – Paul Kehoe and James Brown. A third Enniscorthy man, Johnny Mythen, got within a whisker of being elected. We wish all our TDs well and hope they can help secure badly needed industrial and service employment for the town. Unfortunately the ‘Brooklyn’ movie didn’t win any Oscars which is disappointing for Enniscorthy. However, a great team of people is working hard to capitalise on the success of the movie and their hard work will no doubt pay off with additional tourists to the town. Enniscorthy is gearing up for the main events of the 1916 Centenary year which take place later this month. Make sure to check out the programme on page 18 and invite all your friends and relatives to join the hordes flocking to the town on Easter Monday. We are also looking forward to the official opening of the Athenaeum later this month – keep an eye on our Facebook page for updates on the date of the opening. Finally, don’t forget to come out and support the Enniscorthy St Patrick’s Day Parade – see the full programme on page 17. And let’s all make an effort to leave the town clean and tidy afterwards. – Frank Corcoran

www.slaneynews.com Burger Mac has just re-opened its premises on Abbey Quay, Enniscorthy, after spending €50,000 to repair recent flood damage.

Slaney News

Mac is Back! on 31st december 2015 burger mac in Enniscorthy closed its doors following severe flood damage to its iconic premises on Abbey quay. now, after two months, a lot of hard labour, a major programme of work to ensure the premises and all equipment meets the highest requirements of the health and safety authorities, and €50,000 expenditure, burger mac is back! Burger Mac has a longer history than most in the fast food business, having set up in 1992 in Wexford town before opening in Enniscorthy in 1998. Since then the Enniscorthy outlet has established itself as the leading fast food outlet in the town serving a huge range of food – Fresh chips, burgers, wraps, chicken and topped fries and of course Burger Mac’s famous chicken fillet burger. With 15 staff employed between full-time and parttime Burger Mac is also a major employer in the town so the re-opening is a welcome boost to the local economy. The recent flood damage may have deterred a less committed management and staff from re-opening but as director, Glenda Fortune, explained

to us: “Such was the phenomenal enthusiasm and commitment of the staff that we had no choice but to re-open, I cannot say enough about all the hard work they have put in to make sure we re-opened

Chicken Wrap

and that our premises is looking better than ever with major structural and decoration changes to make dining in Burger Mac more comfortable and enjoyable than ever before.” n

Our local contributor takes a look at the election results in wexford Pic: ©Joseph Doyle

Paul Kehoe – one of Enniscorthy’s two TDs.

As i write this column the position in the Wexford constituency has been decided. Those elected, as predicted in this column last month, are brendan Howlin, James browne, mick Wallace, michael d’Arcy and paul Kehoe. A recheck called by Johnny mythen, as only 52 votes separated him and paul Kehoe, didn’t put the sinn féin man over the line and the position remained unchanged although the margin was cut down to 31 votes. sinn féin must be as devastated as paul Kehoe is relieved at such a tight outcome. Great credit is due to all 17 candidates who put themselves before the people. It takes great courage for a person to put their name on a ballot paper and offer themselves to the electorate. At a local level there were no great surprises but I imagine that

Fianna Fáil will be a little disap-

pointed at an outcome which only gave them one seat. Malcolm Byrne polled well in Gorey but made little impact countywide. The addition of Aoife Byrne, because of this silly gender quota, put paid to any chance they had of getting the second seat. She did not poll sufficiently strong to make an impact and polled too strong to be any good to Malcolm Byrne on her elimination. She had enough votes to stay in the picture long enough to allow other candidates pass Malcolm and leave him too far down the table. On the other hand Fine Gael’s D’Arcy and Kehoe were lucky that their vote management strategy worked extremely well with both of them getting almost an equal number of first preferences and had an added bonus that their third candidate

View from the Hill Julie Hogan picked up very few votes and was eliminated just at the right time to keep them where they wanted to be. Despite the outcome of the recheck Johnny Mythen and Sinn Féin must be really pleased with their performance. They pulled votes from right across the county and despite Johnny being in such a crowded field, in the Enniscorthy District, was in the fight to the very end. He achieved more votes than any Sinn Fein candidate before him and is certainly one to watch in the future. Unless there is a drastic change in the public mood Sinn Féin will take a seat in this constituency at some stage soon. I believe it will be Mick Wallace’s. I say this because Mick’s vote dropped hugely this time. Regardless of what he says publicly he must be a little disap-

pointed but relieved to be back in the Dáil. Of course this was bound to happen with so many other Independent and small party candidates standing when compared to 2011. But more significant is the wearing thin of the novelty factor. The fact that he neither resides or holds clinics in the constituency is bound to have an effect going forward. It is correct for him to say that the job of a T.D. is to legislate and raise issues of national importance in Dáil Éireann rather than do the work of a county councillor. The reality of public life in Ireland is that we expect our T.D.s to be available to assist with everyday problems. If the T.D. is not so available then he or she will become unstuck sooner or later. The prize for bucking the trend has to go to Brendan

James Browne – one of Enniscorthy’s two TDs.

Howlin who, despite the meltdown of the Labour Party, received a magnificent vote in this election. In fairness to him he has delivered major projects to County Wexford over the past five years and was rewarded by the electorate. I would imagine that James Browne is more than happy with his performance but in a way this was expected because of the loyalty to his father John over so many years. D’Arcy and Kehoe must be happy enough to be where they are. Despite the gaffes of the Taoiseach and a kind of sloppiness of the Fine Gael campaign at national level they, as mentioned above, managed the vote very well and despite Fine Gael getting 3,000 less first preference votes than Fianna Fáil captured two seats.

Of the also rans I imagine Ger Carthy must be the most disappointed. Despite running a massive campaign and being Mayor of Wexford, which brings great exposure, he received just over 3,000 first preference votes which is about 1,300 more than his county council total. He was ill advised to contest this election as in political terms he is still a newcomer and possibly should have waited until he had served his time. He kind of jumped the gun and possibly his time would have come at a later election. To conclude on the elections congratulations to the winners and commiserations to those who were not successful on this occasion. n We are often asked: Who is the “View from the Hill” columnist? All we can say is that the author’s surname is NOT Doyle!

Exciting New Arrival

To mark the year of mercy in the diocese of ferns, three days have been set aside (Tuesday 8th to Thursday 10th march) at st. Aidan's Cathedral, Enniscorthy. Beginning with 10am Mass each day and concluding with a service of reconciliation each evening at 7.30pm, the days will feature an opportunity to pass through the Holy Door; to avail of all day confessions and prayer before the Blessed Sacrament; to experience the blessing of the sick at 3pm and to hear various speakers at all scheduled evening 7.30pm services. You are asked to bring a year of mercy candle (available here in the church) to the Cathedral to be blessed during the three days; to help a neighbour or friend to attend the blessing of the sick; to come walk through the Holy Door; have your own confession heard and to pray with us as a fellow member of our Diocese for the

Recently, i had the pleasure of being introduced to my new neighbour, moira fowler, who has just purchased a beautiful residence at Carrigabruce, Enniscorthy, and is establishing a luxury b&b at the premises. Moira, born on the Navan Road, Dublin, has spent most of her life in the hospitality trade on the other side of The Pond – 30 years actually in Colorado. Moira smiles modestly recalling that her B&B – Emerald Manor at Estes Park, Colorado, was awarded a Hospitality of the Year Award. And chatting with her over a cup of coffee one can easily see why. This lovely lady would make the perfect hostess, warm, welcoming and attentive with that wonderful eager to please, nothing-is-too-muchtrouble attitude that would endear her to travellers, visitors and friends. When Moira’s husband passed away seven years ago she decided to return home to Ireland and has spent the past five years searching for her dream residence in the perfect location, which was proving difficult enough until her path collided with Enniscorthy businessman, Michael Bennett, who introduced her to the town which she immediately liked, now all she had to do was to find

intentions of the Holy Father and of the Church. Joining with the Church throughout the world, may we hear the invitation of Pope Francis afresh - "It is not easy to entrust oneself to God's mercy, because it is an abyss beyond our comprehension. But we must!... "Oh, I am a great sinner!" "All the better! Go to Jesus: He likes you to tell him these things!" He forgets, He has a very special capacity for forgetting. He forgets, He kisses you, He embraces you and He simply says to you: "Neither do I condemn you; go, and sin no more" (Jn 8:11). www.staidanscathedral.ie ConfiRmATions take place in St. Aidan’s Cathedral on Saturday 5th March at 11am. We wish all the boys and girls and their families many Blessings and Graces on this Special Day and may the Holy Spirit guide them always. Many thanks to the teachers, priests and Parents

a suitable residence. And she feels she has done just that with the picturesque residence at Carrigabruce offering Moira exactly what she wanted. On four and a half acres with its own stream and walkway, Anam Cara (or Soulmate) will provide the visitor with quality, privacy and elegance. All of the furniture has been shipped over from the States and the market Moira will be targeting are those who want something different and a luxurious

alternative to a hotel with a friendly, personal touch. This charming lady is animated about her new home and her plans for the future. She is also animated about our town telling me that Enniscorthy is the most welcoming place she’s been, now isn’t that a wonderful endorsement for us. A lady full of vision and the energy to make it a reality, Moira has hit the ground running with her new home recently having its grand opening on 18th February and Moira also becoming a member of the Enniscorthy Chamber of Commerce and a member of the newly formed Brooklyn Committee. This is a woman going places and having worked in Silicone Valley, California, she can include many well known celebrities among her friends and acquaintances and is looking forward to entertaining some of them in her new home. So one never knows who one might run into in Enniscorthy in the future but one can certainly be sure that this bubbly, enthusiastic lady and her lovely home are going to be an attractive addition to Enniscorthy. Moira Fowler you are most welcome to Enniscorthy. – Maria Nolan

Tech Tip

back it uP! If you have a computer, it’s more than likely you have important files on it. And to lose them would spell disaster. Hours, months, or years of work, files or photos just flushed down the drain. “But why should I backup my data” you say. Unfortunately hard drives can fail at any given time in their lifespan due to a diverse amount of reasons. Some reasons for failure include worn out or faulty parts. The more serious causes are usually the more silent or sudden ones such as bad sectors, which are corrupted parts of the hard drive which cannot be accessed. Head crash which is when the read-write head makes contact with the platter (Disk) and cuts right into it (imagine putting a knife to a record spinning at +75mph). Any sudden movements can do this, and the damage can be irreparable for the most part. This is eliminated for the most part by an SSD (Solid State Drive). They are more expensive though, with less data to budget ratio. But they make up for it with ridiculous speeds and all round reliability. Defragmentation is also unnecessary on them. But keep them cool, as temperature affects their lifespan more than anything else. If you lose your data it’s not necessarily dead and gone. There are ways to get it back using data recovery centres. They have a very good chance of recovering your data. But at €250€1000 for anywhere from 30-500 GB for one hard drive, it’s an option most can’t afford. There really isn’t any excuse not to keep backups. It would be ideal to keep multiple backups as well as the primary files, preferably keeping small files on the cloud. A suggestion would be Google Drive which offers 15GB of free storage to permanently keep your files. n Ferns Computer Services has been in business in Ferns since May 2007. Can you help James trace his family roots? James A. gee is looking for help tracing his wexford roots. James comes from Liverpool but now lives in Aberdeenshire, Scotland, but still has a lot of family in Liverpool. His great great grandparents were married in Oylegate and their first two children were born there, John Cooney was from Oylegate and Mary Flinn was from Redmondstown, they moved to Liverpool around 1853 as their daughter was born in Oylegate in 1852 but the next child was born in Liverpool in 1854. James tells us, “My great grandfather was born in Liverpool in 1864, these are my grandmother’s paternal grandparents, her maternal grandparents came from a place called Ballyculter in County Down, so we are trying to find out if we have any distant relatives in either Co. Wexford or Co. Down… When my grandmother died in 1974 we know some family members came over from Ireland to her funeral, but most of the older members of the family have since passed away so we don't know where in Ireland her family came from that attended her funeral. As you can see, our heritage is Irish and we are very proud of that fact…” if you think you can help James, please get in touch with us here in the Slaney News. Tel: 087-2403310.

Wexford Co. Council success Wexford has been recognised as “A model County for Accessibility” and Wexford County Council is the toast of ireland’s local authority services, having been awarded the title “Council of the year” at the 2016 Community and Council Awards, presented by lAmA and ipb insurance, which were held in dublin last month. The Awards bring national recognition to projects and developments that may otherwise go unrecognised by celebrating excellence in service delivery at local, county and national level. “Council of the Year” is considered perhaps the most coveted of all the awards available and is a highly prestigious

award which recognises a local authority that has gone above and beyond for the people of the community. Wexford County Council’s winning submission highlighted the extensive and innovative work being done by the Council in integrating Access and Accessibility issues into every aspect of the Council’s services. Wexford County Council has been leading the way in recent years in ensuring that accessibility is at the core of local authority service delivery. Among its recent and innovative initiatives have been the provision of Beach Wheelchairs and the promotion of Accessible Gardens, Parks and Community Spaces. Recently

the Council has introduced the Browsealoud initiative, a web based app which greatly improves accessibility to the Council’s website www.wexfordcoco.ie for those with varying degrees of learning abilities, language differences and literacy skills. In further good news for Wexford County Council, the Health and Safety Management System within the Council's Fire Services Department has recently been awarded the international quality standard OHSAS 18001:2007. Formal presentation of the highly-coveted OHSAS 18001 quality standard took place on Wednesday 10th February at a ceremony in the County Council headquarters. n

A Woven Silence at Enniscorthy Library Enniscorthy Library continued with its 1916 Series last as month as author Felicity Hayes McCoy spoke about her latest b o o k A Wo v e n S i l e n c e M e m o r y, H i s t o r y a n d Remembrance. Felicity, who is no stranger to Enniscorthy, began by thanking Librarian Jarlath Glynn for all his help and his kind invitation to speak and said that the concept for this book began with a chance meeting with Yours Truly when Felicity was reading from her first book House on an Irish Hillside at the Wexford Book Store. During the conversation Felicity men-

tioned that she had connections to Enniscorthy through her Grandmother and her Grandmother’s cousin – Marion Stokes who was a member of Cumann na mBan and in the Athenaeum during 1916. I immediately issued an invitation to Felicity to come along to Enniscorthy Castle as part of the Words In Wexford fringe event of Strawberry Fair 2013. Felicity agreed and was delighted with the large crowd who turned up for Strawberries & Afternoon Tea at the Castle’s elegant Drawing Room to hear her read from her book. During the Q & A session which fol-

lowed a woman in the audience posed the question ‘How do you know what you remember is the truth’? She was one of five siblings, she said, who all shared the same experiences and lived in the same house with the same people, but not one of them remembered anything in the same way! This comment along with other people in the attendance talking to her about their memory of Marion Stokes prompted Felicity to google her later that day and to her disappointment very little appeared as she had given no witness statement and didn`t appear to be men-

tioned in others but there was one intriguing mention of her by the well known Enniscorthy author Colm Toibin who said of her ‘...with two other women... she raised the Irish flag over one of the main buildings of the town of Enniscorthy in the 1916 Rebellion’. And spoke of her coming to his home to watch the 1966 Hugh Leonard documentary Insurrection saying ‘she was the least likely ex-terrorist you could imagine, polite and sedate and distantly smiling’. Felicity, herself, was twelve years old in 1966 and remembered watching Insurrection with her parents in Dublin who never thought to mention that their Wexford relative Marion Stokes had played a part in it and meanwhile Marion, herself, was sitting down each evening for a week with the Toibins watching a drama series about a Rising that, 50 years earlier, she had participated in and according to Colm Toibin noone mentioned it there either! Intriguing to say the very least. A Woven Silence – part memoir, part family history, part Irish history and part Enniscorthy history takes us on a journey through a hidden and largely silent Ireland from 1916 almost to the present day. As Felicity expertly

weaves the story of her family and her relative Marion Stokes she also explores the outcome for all of us when memories are either intentionally or otherwise manipulated or forgotten altogether. In a Woven Silence Felicity examines how Irish life today has been affected by the censorship and mixed messages of the past. Absorbing, entertaining and emotive, A Woven Silence spans two World Wars, a Revolution, a Civil War and the development of the Irish Republic. A most interesting read with its Enniscorthy con-

notations and a book and a story that emerged from an invitation to speak at Enniscorthy Castle. I am deeply grateful to Felicity for mentioning me in her acknowledgements and I would like to take this opportunity to acknowledge her contribution to Focal and our 2014 Literary Festival. Felicity tells me that she has another book due out this Summer – so expect to see her in Enniscorthy again soon. A Woven Silence is on sale at Byrnes Bookstore, Enniscorthy and the Wexford Bookstore. – Maria Nolan

Black and Goss at the Riverside On Thursday the 4th of February, Frances Black & Kieran Goss opened their ‘Reunion 2016’ tour in the Riverside Park Hotel in Enniscorthy with a mixture of solos and duets. Along with beautifully written and performed songs the pair told some great stories about their tours and experiences within the industry. At one point the duo had the entire audience singing along including our very own Frank Corcoran (Yes we saw you Frank!!!) There is something special about seeing such talented stars in an intimate, local venue and both Kieran and Frances addressed the audience as if they knew each and every one of them. During the interval and after the show both artists met with the audience, signed autographs and had photos taken with some of their fans. You can see some of the photos here and also in our Picture Parade on page 10. A NIGHT ON THE HILL Following hot on the heels of the very successful four-night run of Playboy of the Western World Enniscorthy Drama go straight into rehearsals for an exciting new play written by local scribe, bard, musician and songwriter Paul O’Reilly, to be staged at the newly refurbished Athenaeum in conjunction w i t h t h e t o w n ’s 1 9 1 6 Commemorations. A Night On The Hill is a fulllength stage play for three males (characters aged between 20 and 50) and three females (characters aged between 20 and 60), and it begins on the eve of May 3rd, 1916. In Dublin, the executions of the Leaders of the Rising have begun. In Wexford, British soldiers with the help of others have been rounding up rebels. On Vinegar Hill, two Enniscorthy Volunteers await news from the town below, hopeful that the lifting of the rebels will soon cease. They talk of their town, the Hill, the Rising, Pearse’s visits, they sing songs, but together with the dusk, a darkness slowly descends upon their camp and with it a stranger appears. A stranger who will confront, confuse and gradually

draw from them their hidden pasts, their deepest dreams, their deadliest secrets, and their true feelings not just for each other and their families, but for the sacrifices to be made in the fight for a Republic. Though strongly influenced by witness statements and archives of participants in the Wexford Rising, and by newspaper articles of the time, this is a play of fictitious characters that explores culture and comedy, war and consequence, family and love, as well as the sacrifices both sought and offered by the people of 1916. Enniscorthy Drama who commissioned the play for the Easter Commemorations in the town are delighted with the script and are deeply grateful to Paul O`Reilly for all his hard work and for his outstanding talent. We are extremely proud that our fledgling group took on this challenge and we look forward to presenting a unique production of the people, by the people and for the people of Enniscorthy and beyond. This is our contribution to Enniscorthy 2016 and we hope to future generations of Scalders. – Maria Nolan

Despite Brooklyn getting 3 Oscar nominations (Best Actress in a Leading Role, Best Picture, Best Adapted Screenplay), the Enniscorthybased movie missed out on getting an Oscar at the 88th Annual Academy Awards held on 28 February. Chairman of Enniscorthy District of Wexford County Council, Councillor Paddy Kavanagh is adamant that the Council will still make the most of the film’s Academy Award nominations to showcase Enniscorthy and to attract shoppers and tourists to “this beautiful and historic town.” Enniscorthy District Manager Padraig O’Gorman agrees it is an opportunity not to be missed. “We have already seen a welcome increase in visitor numbers and accommodation bed nights in Enniscorthy as a direct result of Brooklyn and we are confident that there will be a significantly increased visitor interest in Enniscorthy throughout 2016 and beyond, as a result of Brooklyn’s continued success” said Mr. O’Gorman. Plans are proceeding for a Brooklyn exhibition which will open in Enniscorthy Castle late April or early May.

‘Laugh For Hope & Hospice’ There is nothing in the world as irresistibly contagious as laughter and good humour, it can improve any situation and helps us all to forget our troubles for a little while at least. People love people who make them laugh and tremend o u s c re d i t i s d u e t o Marshalstown/Newbawn/ Adamstown and Camross Drama Groups who come together at this time each year to bring the general public some hilarious belly laughs along with providing essential funding for two very deserving charities – Hope Cancer Support Services in Enniscorthy and Wexford Hospice Homecare. Now in its fourth year this

is a show of pure comedy, drama and music, and having been in attendance for the past 3 years I would defy anyone not to feel the better of it, as they say ‘laughter is cheap medicine’. This year’s venues are: Bill Nolan’s Pub, Davidstown on Saturday 5th March, Jordan’s in Ballindaggin on Saturday 12th, Bellefield GAA Complex on Saturday 19th and the Horse & Hound, Ballinaboola on Saturday 2nd April. So catch them at a venue near you for a marvellous night of entertainment and fun and the knowledge that you are lending your support and assistance to two most worthwhile causes. – Maria Nolan

Enniscorthy Musical Society, in association with Enniscorthy Credit Union, will present ‘Seussical the Musical’ in Coláiste Bríde Sports Hall from Tuesday 29th March to Saturday 2nd April 2016. Seussical the Musical is based on the books of Dr Seuss, with wonderful songs by Stephen Flahery and Lynn Ahrens, and features many familiar characters including Horton the Elephant, the Cat in the Hat and the Grinch along with those miniature citizens of Whoville! For those of you who are not familiar with the Dr Seuss

stories, Seussical tells the story of Horton the Elephant who lives in the Jungle of Nool. One day he hears a cry for help which seems to be coming from a clover flower. Unfortunately after making contact with the tiny community of Whos, who live on the clover and making friends with the Mayor’s son JoJo, the clover blows away and gets lost. While trying to find the clover again, Horton agrees to hatch an egg for his glamourous friend Mayzie La Bird, who is too selfish to sit on it herself. An elephant sitting on an egg looking for a tiny town on top of a

Jablokovs present "Moscow Nights” Wexford Arts Centre is once again delighted to welcome back Violin maestro Vladimir with his equally gifted younger sibling Anton with their brand new show ‘Moscow Nights’, with traditional Russian melodies, popular classical pieces and some singalong evergreens, which they will be recording live and running nightly at 8.00pm on Friday 4th, Saturday 5th & Sunday 6th March.

Completing the gifted ensemble for these concerts will be pianist Adam Kuruc and Peter Vizvari on the double bass. Celebrating popular classical music pieces by the great Russian composers, including Shostakovitch, Rimsky-Korsakov and Prokofiev, and the rich Russian history of folk and gypsy melodies. Go along and enjoy ‘Moscow Nights’ as these superb musicians explore their storied

clover flower? No wonder the rest of the characters in the show think he is crazy! But in true musical tradition, our hero Horton finds love (and a happy ending) with girl next door, Gertrude McFuzz, who will do anything for her friend. To find out what happens next, you will have to go to the show! Director Paul Walsh will be familiar to Wexford town audiences through his work with Oyster Lane and Wexford Drama Group but this is his first time working with EMS. A lifelong fan of Dr Seuss, he has thrown himself wholeheartedly into this production by

also taking on the lead role of Horton. Musical director Kevin Kennedy and choreographer Anne Marie Cooney, who have worked together over the last number of years to bring the standard of EMS productions to a professional level, complete the Seussical production team. There are over 50 adults and children in the show and among the cast we are delighted to welcome a few new faces. Dylan Walsh is making his EMS debut to play the narrator of the show, the famous Cat in the Hat, but he has appeared with many other neighbouring musical and dramatic groups, many of them within the last 12 months! Gertrude will be played by Wexford based TY student Emily Brazzill, who is also having a very busy year having played lead roles with both Oyster Lane and Wexford Panto recently. EMS regulars Therese Canavan Bolger and Eryn Buckley will be playing the parts of Mayzie and Jojo respectively. Mr and Mrs Mayor will be played by Chris Doyle and Jenny Murphy whilst Marion O’Leary and her daughter Emma will play on-stage mother and daughter duo Sour Kangaroo and baby kangaroo. Eddie Wilson will take on the role of General Schmitz. This colourful, feel-good musical will appeal to all ages and is a celebration of friendship, love and kindness with a generous helping of imagination thrown in! view From the nosebleeds

down to the RiveR 1980. Ronald Reagan is elected President of the United States (a celebrity in the biggest job in the world? Mental, that could never happen again right????), there’s gold discovered in the Australian outback causing a Minor Gold Rush, young gamers are introduced to the simple unadulterated joy that is Pac-Man and a generation of youngsters, now slightly older, mourn the loss of a Beatle as John Lennon is gunned down outside his New York apartment by Mark David Chapman. A then 30 year old Bruce Springsteen is searching deeper inside, looking for more after the commercial monster that is Born To Run, the album that propelled him to superstardom and helped him escape the comparisons to Bob Dylan that were drawn after his first two albums, Greetings From Asbury Park and The Wild, The Innocent & The E Street Shuffle. Though critically quite viable, and growing an ever increasing fan base, they were not commercially setting the world on fire. Lester Bangs was less than favourable when reviewing his first album saying, “…many of us dismissed it. He wrote like Bob Dylan and Van Morrison and also sang like them, as well as leading a band that sounds like Van Morrison.” Then Jon Landau stepped in. Landau was a music critic for Boston’s The Real Paper, and upon seeing a typical fiery, impassioned show by Bruce and the slowly increasing E Street Band (minus Little Stevie, and Nils at this point) was to pen the words, “Tonight, I saw rock and roll’s future and its name is Bruce Springsteen. And on a night when I needed to feel young, he made me feel like I was hearing music for the first time.” Landau would go on to become Springsteen’s manager and producer and would steer The Boss to his first major triumph. Born To Run took a monumental fourteen months to record. The record company pumped money into the production, in a last ditch attempt to finally have a commercially viable record from “the future of rock and roll.” Springsteen became bogged down in the making of the album and during the sessions, the title track took six months out of the fourteen to record. The frustration stemmed from the writer “hearing sounds in his head” that he could not explain to the band. Stevie Van Zandt, a long-time friend and collaborator with Springsteen would often wan-

der in the studio and help out, lending his talents to organizing the blistering horn section on Tenth Avenue Freeze Out. Born To Run was a commercial beast, and peaked at Number 3 in the Billboard Top 200. The tour supporting the album spawned some amazing shows, one of which was immortalized for a re-release, Live At The Hammersmith Odeon 1975. The shows at this time showed a seasoned veteran in Springsteen leading a powerhouse band through early tracks and cuts from the album being promoted, which have gone on to become live staples and beyond, Born To Run, Thunder Road and Jungleland. A legal battle with his former manager, Mike Appel kept Springsteen out of the recording studio, so he toured, toured and toured some more. This argument was settled in 1977 so the studio was now an option. The subsequent sessions produced what was to date his most inward and personal record, Darkness On The Edge Of Town. The songs were pointed, personal and less rapid fire than previous outings, with hints of his early life and troubled relationship with his father hinted at on tracks such as Adam Raised A Cain and the folk-like dirge, Factory, in which Springsteen laments the “working life”. An amazing couplet sums up his view on the life of the average working man: “Through the mansions of fear, through the mansions of pain. I see my daddy walking through them factory gates in the rain. Factory takes his hearing, factory gives him life. It’s the working, the working, just the working life.” Darkness would see a shift from the idealism of Greetings and the romanticism of Born To Run. It turned inwards and towards the grown up issues facing people of Springsteen’s age and indeed the people he spent most of his time with, the members of the E Street Band. Issues such as marriage, growing up, growing apart and other human tendencies that are everywhere to be found, these explorations would be all found on the new album, the double LP The River. Of the album Springsteen himself has said, "Rock and roll has always been this joy, this certain happiness that is in its way the most beautiful thing in life. But rock is also about hard-

15

ness and coldness and being alone ... I finally got to the place where I realized life had paradoxes, a lot of them, and you've got to live with them." This outlook is strewn across 20 tracks, veering from the throwaway fifties joy of cuts such as Sherry Darling, Cadillac Ranch, Ramrod and I’m A Rocker. In between these celebrations of rock and roll and all that comes with that joy, there are dark themes. And for my money, these tracks are the standouts of this album and indeed Springsteen’s best work. Tracks such as Independence Day which is a thinly veiled,

direct almost approach to his decision to finally leave home and the troubled home life he had with his father, hinted at in Darkness. Killer lines such as, “There’s a darkness in this house that got the best of us, there’s a darkness in this town that got us too.” The song drips with anguish, heartbreak but ultimately freedom, which is always a huge theme in the work. Two other standout tracks are again slow burners, but epic burners. Drive All Night is a pure love song in which the protagonist promises to “drive all night just to buy you some shoes”, and why you might ask? Well for the simple, unabashed reason that the lady in question has “got his love, heart and soul.” The Price You Pay is a sprawling tale of searching, finding and surviving for love, possibly acceptance of your situation. And again freedom, this time it could be a father

/ mother / boyfriend / loved one saying goodbye to a special person, “So let the game start, you better run you little wild heart. You can run through all the nights and all the days, but just across the county line. A stranger passing through put up a sign that counts the men fallen away to the price you pay. And girl before the end of the day, I'm gonna tear it down and throw it away.” The album, according to Springsteen was, “a record that was sort of the gateway to a lot of my future writing. It was a record we made after Darkness on the Edge of Town. It was a record made during a recession— hard times in the States. Its title song is a song I wrote for my brother-in-law and sister. My brother-in-law was in the construction industry, lost his job and had to struggle very hard back in the late 70s, like so many people are doing today. It was a record

riverside PArK hotel

where I first started to tackle men and women and families and marriage”. He has always been described as a “people’s poet” and while I can’t speak for the man himself, this has never been truer an assumption than on The River. When listening to it you can almost see the small town, the people trudging to work, telling their loved ones they love them, they’re leaving or when they’ll be home after work. Like your town, come to think of it just like our town and hell for that matter every small town that has ever existed!!! The dramas that unfold between closed doors and twitching curtains. Do yourself a favour and put the album on, and if you cannot identify with at least one of the characters in this sprawling musical opus, check your pulse because you might as well be dead.

Major new music venue for Gorey?

ChurCh Street enniSCorthy

A new 1,500 seater music venue, along the lines of Dublin’s Vicar Street, is a possibility for Gorey at the old Market House, involving music entrepreneur Harry Crosbie working together with Wexford County Council. Mr Crosbie has been quoted as saying: “If we are chosen by Wexford County Council we will build a 1,500 capacity multi-purpose venue at the Market House, in collaboration with Wexford County Council.” The multipurpose venue would be suitable for concerts, comedy shows, exhibitions, trade shows, etc. Mr. Crosbie's submission is one of several received by Wexford County Council in relation to the 300-year-old Market House now that it no longer serves as Gorey’s Town Council Chamber. n

For budding food entrepreneurs Food Works ireland is calling out to all budding food entrepreneurs across Wexford, if you have a big idea for a food business or you could create a successful and scalable global food business then Food Works could be the ideal opportunity for you. it is an intensive business development and accelerator programme designed for food and drink start-ups and is jointly run by Bord Bia, enterprise ireland and teagasc. This is the fourth year of the programme and over the last three years some of Ireland’s most successful food start-ups have taken part in Food Works. Previous Food Works programme participants are local sisters Karen and Natalie Keane who run their premium luxury chocolate company ‘Bean and Goose’ producing luxury chocolate products at their farm in Ferns since 2014. Encouraging other food producers to apply to take part in Food Works 2016 and speaking of their experience with the programme Karen said, “We launched our choco-

late products at farmers markets and we got wonderful positive feedback, our business was growing and we felt that applying and doing food works would be wonderful to help us scale our business. We were delighted to be selected to take part in the programme and without it we would not be in the business position that we are today. The expertise on the financial side of the business, through to seeing your business in a very practical and meaningful way, for us it was a total baptism of fire but it was so invaluable. Our products are now stocked at 25 independent stores in Ireland in the artisanal sector and we are now ready to move onto the next stage focusing on the export market, which we will be doing next year.”

Maria Nolan (left) with the lovely ladies from West Jet – Eileen Penrose, Janette Yetman and Marie Manning.

in January, enniscorthy reenactors were invited to be part of the Visit Wexford stand at the holiday show at the rds, dublin, along with representatives from the major hotels in the county and representatives from popular Wexford attractions like Wells house, kia ora Farm, tintern abbey, Wexford Walking trails and staff from the tourism office at Wexford County Council, and Cathy keane of Wexford heritage tours. The object of the exercise was naturally to sell Wexford as a holiday and short break destination to the thousands of people who come to the hugely popular event each year seeking new and exciting horizons or places to visit nearer to home with things to do and places to see in comfortable and friendly surroundings. And Enniscorthy re-enactors in their 1916 attire proved to be the perfect magnet attracting people to the Wexford stand to have their photos taken with the group or to ask the question ‘what are you dressed up for’. Why even the Minister for Tourism, Michael Ring, dropped by the stand to be photographed with us. The Holiday Show is a wonderful opportunity to put all your good news stories out there and find out what others are doing and find out what people want. I was amazed

with the level of interest in all things to do with the 1916 Commemorations and surprised by the amount of people who wanted to tell us about their 1916 connection to Wexford – from mams and dads, to grans and granddads to great aunts and uncles who were involved in the struggle here. I also had the pleasure of calling in on the Newfoundland/Labrador s t a n d a n d re n e w i n g m y acquaintance with the lovely people from West Jet who will be flying daily direct from Dublin to St. John’s, Newfoundland, from May onwards. After discussing the Irish/Newfoundland Wexford connection with them along with the lack of information on

Newfoundland and Labrador in many of the travel agents in the South East I was delighted to hear from West Jet representative Eileen Penrose that she will be sending brochures and leaflets to the agents within a matter of days. Eileen also told me that she would be delighted to come to Wexford this year and be part of the Ireland/Newfoundland Festival happening in Wexford, Waterford and Carlow in August. Perhaps this is the beginning of something with huge potential for Wexford and the sunny South East, which will go to prove that the Holiday Show is all about networking and making that initial contact. – Maria Nolan

It’s all happening at Enniscorthy Chamber

the monthly meeting of enniscorthy & district Chamber was held at the Millrace hotel, Bunclody, on Wednesday 10th February and Chairman John Burke o’Leary began proceedings by welcoming the Bunclody business contingent and called on Councillor Barbara anne Murphy to give a brief update on developments in the area, which included confirmation that the new pathway was about to commence on the N80 from the town to the cemetery, the opening of two new funeral homes, a Walking Festival scheduled for september and a shop Window Competition which will take place with the st. Patrick’s day Parade on March 17th. With the Oscars imminent a lot of discussion focused on Brooklyn and the Enniscorthy connection. The newly established Brooklyn Committee requested that a letter be sent from the Chamber along with a Brooklyn Book of Best Wishes to Saoirse Ronan, signed by the Chamber, well-wishers and the community. The book, very kindly donated by Moira Fowler, would be first taken to FCJ, Bunclody where Saoirse went to school to be signed by pupils and staff and from there to AIB, Enniscorthy, and other locations in the town to be signed by the general public.

The very hard-working, enthusiastic Brooklyn Committee chaired by Cathy Keane reported that approximately 20 entries had been submitted for the Enniscorthy Home of Brooklyn Logo Competition from which a stunning winner had been chosen to appear on stickers for shop windows, shopping bags or indeed any other means of promoting Enniscorthy as the home of Brooklyn. Cathy jovially told the Chamber that she had put one on the Taoiseach Enda Kenny during his recent visit to the town. The Committee is hosting an Enniscorthy Home of Brooklyn Oscar Night for local extras and the general public on March 16th at the Riverside Park Hotel, including music, song, drama, fashion and Oscar like presentations, in short a wonderfully diverse evening of entertainment and celebration all for only €10 per ticket. With several built-in surprises this one promises to be an occasion not

to be missed. So book your ticket early to avoid disappointment. Cathy also outlined details of a Brooklyn Movie Bus Tour Map for visitors to the town being developed through Council funding and excitedly told the meeting that she had her very first Brooklyn Bus Tour booked in for the following day - an American lady coming all the way to Enniscorthy because she loved the movie. How cool is that? As part of the Bus Tour a room at Enniscorthy Castle will be transformed into a Brooklyn museum. Eric Barron, Chairperson of the Retail sub-committee, outlined plans by Enniscorthy businesses to promote the 1916 Centenary celebrations by offering Enniscorthy Vouchers to the total value of €2016. And a shop window competition was agreed as part of the St. Patrick’s Day Parade with AIB sponsoring prizes. Chairman John Burke O`Leary outlined some of the scheduled events for Easter Monday in the town and said that a crowd of between 5,000 and 10,000 was expected saying that it was a wonderful opportunity to present ourselves and our town in the best possible light. Sean Mythen will be rolling o u t a S k i l l n e t Tr a i n i n g Programme in customer care for businesses and the tourism sector with a Scalders Certificate being issued to attendees. John O`Connor told the meeting how the same had worked so well in Killarney, saying that if every person in Enniscorthy knew 5 things in relation to places to visit and things to do it could make a major difference to how we are perceived and turn each and every citizen into a town ambassador. S o t h e n e w s f ro m t h e Chamber is energetic, upbeat and positive with all looking forward to a wonderful 2016 in Enniscorthy. – Maria Nolan

Golden Celebrations for Mick & Eileen Mick and Eileen on their wedding day in 1961.

PET aPPRovEd

VET DIARY FOR MAR. with the Moyne Veterinary Clinic

This month the clinic looks at spaying and neutering Spaying and neutering are considered the routine operations that a small animal surgeon carries out each week. The fact that it is a routine operation does not diminish the fact that it is a full blown operation, full general anaesthetic and is not a simple procedure. Here at the Moyne Veterinary Clinic we aim to keep high standards using the safest in the pre-medication sedations, and the same gaseous anaesthetics that are used in the top hospitals in the country. Each animal receives pain relief before/during the operation and this can be topped up if necessary depending on the recovery of the patient.

Fifty years, seven children and 13 grandchildren later Michael and eileen Furlong were still smiling as they gathered with family, neighbours and friends at the riverside Park hotel to celebrate their 5 0 t h G o l d e n We d d i n g anniversary. It was a glorious evening of treasured memories and golden moments as daughter Fionnuala recited a poem she had composed for the occasion recalling many of the special events in the lives of her parents who met at Adamstown Ballroom in 1961, married in February 1966, had their wedding breakfast in the Talbot Hotel, Wexford, and spent their honeymoon in London, and the rest as they say is history.

Michael complimented his lovely wife Eileen for having the grace and tenacity to put up with him for all those fifty years and thanked his children for organising the wonderful gathering and all those who had turned up to share this momentous time in their lives.

In today’s changing times and shifting values this was indeed a unique occasion, enjoyed by all and I would like to wish Mick and Eileen many, many more happy years together. Below: Mick, Eileen and children. Pic and Words: Maria Nolan. n

We use the highest quality in non-absorbable suture materials so that there is the least probability of reactions to the stitches. Each animal is monitored during recovery too and we keep them hospitalised until they have recovered fully from the anaesthetic. Like people, animals are all different and some react differently after the operation. Some may gain weight post operatively over the months and years so if there is a possibility of this we'll advise on a specific change in their diet to prevent the onset of excess weight gain, obesity and all the related problems it can bring. Some animals can resent the fact that their 'crown jewels' have been docked and we very often have the situation where we'll use alternative remedies that help alleviate and ameleriate the situation, bringing them back to their happy go lucky selves. We aim to give the best service we can and follow up each case making sure they are 100% before, during and after their procedure. The old adage 'you pay for what you get' comes to mind for any business. We don't mind going that bit extra when you get the satisfactory results. Different clinics have their own fortes… ours is to help the long term health of your pet be the best it can be. Thank you for your custom and we have a young and enthusiastic team at your service. n

Memorable Mass at Bellefield GAA on thursday evening last Fr. odhran Furlong celebrated Mass at Bellefield Gaa complex for all the deceased members of the rapparees/ starlights Club. it’s been years since Mass was celebrated in the Clubhouse and Fr. Furlong told the 60 strong congregation that in all his years in the priesthood and all his involvement with numerous Gaa clubs around the county he had never before been asked to say Mass at a club. The request came from several of the hard-working and regular female members of the club who are to be seen every Monday and Wednesday night operating at the weekly club fundraisers – Lotto and Bingo and some of them were delighted to be called upon to bring lotto, bingo, and savings books to the offertory altar along with younger members who brought football, jersey, hurl, sliothar and cups – all symbols of what the club

is about and what it means to its members. Well attended and with participation from the young to the not-so-young this was a special club occasion with all of the deceased members being remembered with fondness for their loyalty, dedication and hard work through the years on behalf of the Rapparees/Starlights and a sincere thank you to all those who read prayers and Prayers

Three days of prayer at St. Aidan's In response to the invitation of Pope Francis to mark the Year of Mercy in every diocese throughout the world, Bishop Brennan has invited the people, religious and priests of the diocese to engage in three days of prayer at St. Aidan's Cathedral, Enniscorthy from 8th to 10th March 2016. In the coming weekends, specially designed mercy candles will be distributed at all Masses in the diocese of Ferns and a pastoral letter written by Bishop Brennan will be made available. Priests will be explaining The Year of Mercy in Churches and encouraging their flocks - and those beyond - to come and to participate. Over the course of the three days - which will begin with Mass at 10am and conclude with a service of reconciliation at 7.30pm daily - the people of the diocese are invited to come and walk through the Holy Door at the Cathedral, to avail of the sacrament of reconciliation or simply to chat with a priest, to participate in the anointing of the sick (Tuesday 8th and Wednesday 9th at 3pm) and to pray for the intentions of the Holy Father and of the Church.

Drawing on a line of Pope Francis which was offered recently in a talk to Capuchin monks at Rome - "Don't beat up the penitent" - Bishop Brennan has met this week with the priests of the diocese and encouraged them both to energetically encourage the people to come along and secondly to offer them a warm welcome when they arrive, conscious that for some, they may not

Brother Kevin Crowley, the renowned founder of the Capuchin Day Centre in Dublin which daily feeds 1,000 of the capital’s homeless, will come and speak at the three days of prayer (8th to 10th March) at St. Aidan's Cathedral in Enniscorthy to mark the Year of Mercy. The 79-year-old monk will be guest speaker on the evening of 8th March. An invitation to come along and hear him speak about the need for mercy in today’s world has been issued at all Masses in the Diocese of Ferns.

have been in church for years, others may wonder what reception they might receive should they wish to return. "In approaching God for His mercy this year, may we be gifted with ever bigger hearts and minds - apologising to each other where needed - and in graciously accepting an apology offered to us by another," said Bishop Brennan - for "In a world that can at times get cold and dark, we the disciples of Jesus are invited to become warmer and brighter - a beacon of hope and kindness that reflects the light of Heaven "being merciful to others as our Father in Heaven is merciful to us." Various invited speakers have been allotted to the different services and events over the three days and the priests of the diocese have agreed to be available throughout. The Bishop has asked the priests of the diocese to offer suggestions as to how best the Year of Mercy might be celebrated in the diocese, in parishes, in groups or as individuals. The Pastoral Letter of the Bishop was available in Churches on the weekend of Sunday 28th February. n

Keeping it in the Family

Relatives Seamus Deegan and Monica Prendergast with County Archivist Grainne Doran. Pic: Marai Nolan.

There was another fantastic talk on Thursday 25th February at Enniscorthy Library in the very popular 1916 Series titled Keeping It In The Family. Delivered eloquently by County Archivist Grainne Doran whose passion for all things 1916 is well known. This lecture had mega local appeal focusing mainly on three families in the Enniscorthy area who had major involvement in the Rising in the town, with several members of each family, male and female, participating.

The three families featured were the Morans of Church Street, the Keegans of 10 Irish S t re e t a n d t h e Ry a n s o f Tomcoole. Grainne paid tribute to the selfless involvement of complete family units where every member was involved in some way – sons and daughters, and were described as ‘a menace to British Rule in the town’ and whose homes were constantly under surveillance and oft times raided. Men and women she said who put ‘Ireland first, Ireland last and Ireland over all.’

Enniscorthy brothers and sisters stood shoulder to shoulder, members of Cumann na mBan and the Volunteers ready to fight and die for Irish freedom. Many relatives of those who participated were present for Grainne’s lecture and anxious to speak with her afterwards to share photographs, letters and stories of their heroic ancestors. Another successful event at Enniscorthy Library in the lead up to the 1916 Commemorations. – Maria Nolan

Game of Thrones in Ferns! Gaelic kings and Norman warlords will be the subject of a major conference to be held in Ferns on March 12th - 13th. The conference is entitled 'Gaelic Capital and Norman Stronghold - Ferns and the transformation of Ireland'. The two day symposium will explore Wexford's transformation from Gaelic kingdom to Norman lordship. Ferns was central to the events which took place in the 12th century and which transformed the ancient Gaelic kingdom of Leinster and changed the course of Irish history. “This was a real Game of Thrones,” according to Catherine MacPartlin, one of the organisers of the conference. “A King of Leinster elopes with (or kidnaps!) a rival king’s wife and ends up ousted from his realm by the High King of Ireland. Hungry for revenge, he sails overseas to enlist the help of yet another King, Henry II of England, and returns with an army of Norman mercenaries.” The Norman Invasion had begun and Ireland was

French Ambassador to attend Ferns Conference The French Ambassador, Jean-Pierre Thébault, is no stranger to the north Wexford area, having visited the area on more than one occasion in the past year. An engaging speaker with a keen interest in history, he will speak on the Norman influence on Ireland’s social, infrastructural and cultural landscape.

BREE The Bree Macra Capers Team had great sucess in Mallow, Co. Cork, last month with the All Ireland final of the FBD Macra Capers Competition, hosted by the Avondhu region. The Wexford Team were competing against five other teams – Whitechurch, Clonakilty, Banteer, Donoughmore and Enfield. It was a tough competition with all the teams putting on entertaining performances for the audience of over 700.

changed forever. The Conference is being organised by local community group Ferns Heritage Project, a sub-committee of Ferns Development Association. Archaeologists and historians from Ireland and Scotland, all experts in their individual fields, will deliver papers on topics ranging from Gaelic royal landscapes to Anglo Norman settlement and William Marshal, the greatest knight in Christendom. Speakers will include Dr. Edel Bhreathnach, CEO, The Discovery Programme; Gerard Dowling, also of The Discovery Programme, who led the recent geophysical project in Ferns; Professor Elizabeth Fitzpatrick, University College Galway; Dr Stephen Harrison, University of Glasgow; Dr Adrian Empey, an expert on William Marshal, and Dr Eamonn McEneaney, Waterford Museum

of Treasures. Question and Answer sessions will give conference attendees a full opportunity to participate. The conference will take place in Ferns Castle Visitors Centre on Saturday, March 12th. With just 50 seats available, booking is essential, seating will be allocated on a first come first served basis. Conference fee €25 (including lunch). Optional extras include a Conference Dinner on Saturday evening at a cost of €25 and Field Trips on Sunday €15. Audi A4 interior

Audi A4: “A more chiselled and defined version of its former self”

There’s a new Audi A4 in town and if you passed one on the road you might doubt its newness as, in terms of design, it’s just a more chiselled and defined version of its former self… But the new A4 sits on a new platform with technology, lightweight construction and

efficiency at its core. This is such a classy and sophisticated car: the surfaces are so perfectly formed and every crease and line is cut like an expensive tailored suit. It’s strong, Germanic and unmistakably Audi. Things only get better when you sit inside. The A4 has a

brand new interior that’s beautifully light and simple, but so intelligent and artistic in its design. There are a mixture of surfaces and materials, and all are really quality and feel great to touch. A longer wheelbase makes the A4 a bit more spacious inside than before, while a 480 litre boot is on par with

rivals. On board technology is impressive with infotainment provided via the MMI system that can be operated using steering wheel mounted controls, a rotary dial on the centre console, conveniently placed shortcut buttons or by voice. A 1.4-litre turbo petrol with 150bhp is the entry point into

the A4 range and there’s also a 2.0-litre petrol with 190bhp. The 2.0-litre diesel comes in two power outputs (150 or 190bhp) and there are two range-topping 3.0-litre V6 diesels (218 and 272bhp) for purists. There are manual and automatic transmissions, and of course the option of quattro

all-wheel drive. The A4 has the best drag coefficient in its class at 0.23 and small design tweaks like moving the position of the side mirrors mean that the A4 can slice through the air for maximum efficiency. My test car had the entry level diesel (2.0-litre with 150bhp) and it’s got enough

Slaney Motoring

www.slaneynews.com power to keep your average driver happy. Audi has shaved up to 120kg off the A4’s weight and on the road for a big car it feels remarkably light. In terms of steering and handling it’s precise and predictable: you turn into a corner and it grips. It’s not the kind of car that’s going to egg you on down a back road but a relaxed and confident pace leaves little to complain about. Ride comfort has been much improved and the softness matches this car’s luxury feel. It’s also exceptionally quiet in the cabin. A true premium driving experience! There are three trim levels for the new A4: Attraction, SE and S Line. Standard spec on entry level Attraction models includes alloy wheels, keyless start, rear parking sensors, climate control and electric lumbar support. Step up to SE for cruise control, twin leather upholstery and navigation. Top spec S-Line models have a lowered sports suspension and special S-Line styling. Pricing starts at ₏35,800 for the entry level 1.4-litre petrol in Attraction trim, SE models start at ₏37,750, while S Line models start at ₏41,250. Head to the options list and you could transform your A4 into a technological tour de force very quickly but it all comes at a cost. Much has been made of Audi’s virtual cockpit, a 12.3 inch LCD screen that replaces traditional instrument dials in the driver’s line of sight. It’s exciting to look at but must be added as a cost option for ₏2,500 as part of a Technology Pack. Other technological highlights include optional Audi Matrix LED headlights, the Bang & Olufsen Sound System with 3D sound, the Audi phone box with wireless charging, Audi Smartphone Interface, the head-up display, and new driver assistance systems and Audi connect services. The Business Package adds driving aids like lane departure warning, automatic high beams, adaptive cruise control and traffic sign recognition for ₏2,100. But options or no options, the new Audi A4 will leave an impression. It might not look all that different from the outside, but Audi has made their A4 even more desirable than before with an artistic cabin that’s a reason to elevate this car above its rivals. The A4 is a dream to drive, with the quality, comfort and refinement that marks a true premium driving experience. The A4 is back and it’s ready for business. Model Tested: Audi A4 2.0TDI 150 S Line Price: ₏44,200 (Range starts at ₏35,800) Engine: 2.0-litre diesel Power: 150bhp 0-100km/h: 8.9 seconds Economy: 70.4mpg CO2 Emissions: 106g/km Motor Tax: ₏190 per year n

small CaR buying tips by Caroline Kidd Last month we looked at some of the best of what’s out there in terms of small cars. If you’re trying to evaluate a number of different small cars, here are five things to think about before you buy. 1) RIDE COMFORT You don’t have to settle anymore for an uncomfortable small car. Some are better than others however. On a test drive check to see what the car is like over speed bumps and rough, uneven surfaces in town, and if you will do a lot of driving out of town, take it out and see what it feels like as you cruise along at speed. Is it comfortable, settled or do you feel like you’re being bounced around a lot? 2) EQUIPMENT What are your must haves and nice to haves? Make sure you examine the specification to find out what you’re getting. If you do a lot of long journeys, cruise control could make driving less tiring. If you’re all about the look of the car, check it has alloys! Does it have electric mirrors? Some will have these as standard, some won’t, and they’re really useful for parallel parking if there are kerbs involved. 3) ENGINES Many small cars have what appears at first glance a bewildering choice of engines. There could be two or three petrols, some turbo charged and some not, and there might be a diesel thrown in there too. Your small 1.0-litre petrol might look cheap and be fine around town, but could be out of its depth very quickly once out of town. Test drive it to see if it’s enough fun for you! Petrol is the obvious choice for a small car but if you’re doing a long commute daily then there are plenty of good, small diesels on the market too.

4) PRACTICALITY Cars have grown over the years and use space more efficiently, but what’s out there still varies in terms of space. The areas to watch out for are rear seating space if you carry passengers regularly, and boot space. Most small cars are competitive among their rivals in terms of what’s on offer, but some will really excel, while others may feel more cramped.

5) RUNNING COSTS Generally these are low for small cars but do check and compare the figures between models. Sportier models with larger alloy wheels can affect CO2 emissions and push similar cars into different tax bands, so check that you know the data for the actual car you are buying to avoid any nasty surprises. – Caroline Kidd

Commissioned by Enniscorthy Drama Group for the Co. Wexford 1916 Centenary Commemorations, ‘A Night on the hill’ is an original, fulllength stage play for three males and three females written by Enniscorthy native Paul O’Reilly. It begins on the eve of May 3rd, 1916. In Dublin, the executions of the Rising leaders have begun. In Wexford, British soldiers with the help of others have been rounding up rebels. On Vinegar Hill, two Enniscorthy Volunteers await news from the town below, hopeful that the lifting of the rebels will soon cease. They talk of their town, the Hill, the Rising, Pearse’s visits, they sing songs, but together with the dusk a darkness slowly descends upon their camp and

with it a stranger appears. A stranger who will confront, confuse and gradually draw from them their hidden pasts, their deepest dreams, their deadliest secrets, and their true feelings not just for each other and their families, but for the sacrifices to be made in the fight for a Republic. Though strongly influenced by witness statements and archives of participants in the Wexford Rising, and by newspaper articles of the time, this is a play of fictitious characters that explores culture and comedy, war and consequence, family and love, as well as the sacrifices both sought and offered by the people of 1916. There are no dates scheduled for performance just yet but it could be the end of this month.

Arts Snippets… Paying lip service to the arts

Yet another success for EDG Enniscorthy Drama Group would like to express its thanks and appreciation to the people of Enniscorthy and beyond for the massive support of their latest production the Playboy of the western world. With four full houses and several standing ovations the response from the thespian public couldn’t have been better, with many proclaiming that this has been our best production to date. Certainly, many of our young, up and coming actors have cut their teeth on the Synge classic, with excellent performances all round. The jovial, carousing duo of James Freeman and Brendan Robinson as Jimmy Farrell and Philly Cullen and the four highly excitable, entranced females Anne Marie Whelan as Sara Tansey, Julie Fox as Susan Brady, Gemma Delaney as Honor Blake and Roisin Barry as Nelly, with their witch-like appearances, madcap antics and piercing peals adding life, vitality and fun to this most energetic and captivating interpretation. Indeed, Director Jimmy Kavanagh has outdone himself with this one, the almost over

the top performances, exaggerated facial expressions and electrically charged atmosphere really drawing in the audience and making them feel part of the tale - in fact one lady said of the race scene that she felt the performers were about to jump off the stage into the audience at any time. Michelle Whelan, the opportunist Widow Quin who makes a play for the young Playboy, is a most likable schemer and makes you believe that she could well have done away with her husband or indeed reared a black ram at her breast. Her body language as she makes her moves on the young Christy is superb and gives the audience lots to giggle about. Both fathers in the play Pegeen Mike’s played by Myles Mulally and Christy’s played by John O’Gorman are expertly cast - the rotund and hearty Michael Flaherty - father of Pegeen who seems to spend all his time at wakes where liquor and talk flow freely - has all the signs of it and Old Mahon definitely comes across as the ‘crusty’, contrary, dirty old devil described by Christy in his tale

of murder. John O’Gorman has powerful delivery and wonderful stage presence and Myles Mulally is a revelation to all in only his second ever stage performance. Shawn Keough is a weasel of a man, dull and spineless, and Michael Whelan depicts just that. His mealy-mouthed demeanor, his hesitant stuttering, his constant cap-wringing all help us to despise the little man who seems to fear Fr. Reilly more than God himself. Margo Whelan as the spirited, sharp-tongued, quick-witted Pegeen Mike does an excellent job making us like her and loath her, empathise and sympathise with her as she goes from being the beautiful heroine of the piece to the tragic figure at the end of the play when she declares ‘Oh my grief, I’ve lost him surely, I’ve lost the only Playboy of the Western World’. All the cast portrayed deep understanding and empathy with their characters and gave excellent performances throughout but centre stage belonged to the Playboy. So here we are, the moment, the sweat. Is it going our way, is it going the other way, I'm not looking or listening it’s all too much. The envelope arrived, you see the Whites of their eyes, All you hear is best Picture, best Director, best Actress. So here it is, and the Oscar goes to...? Oscar fever is right so we are now up there. In the Hollywood, I've never been to Hollywood.

Eight AM, cloudy Sour coffee, nicotine

The lights go up, the big night so bright, Big hair, green Dresses Makeup, makeover to beat the band, Oscar fever is in sight. They say it was filmed by the Slaney Others say it was done in Canada Whatever they say I'll drink Canada dry To shed a tear not a dry eye. I've held her hand looked into her eyes, Her hand to hold the golden calf, Take the prize on our behalf Oscar fever is here, Oscar fever is here and the contraption goes to A room with a view. n

was surely the Playboy of the Western World. His talented tongue, his command of stage, his captivating and distinct delivery, his ease of movement and gesture, his agility, energy and ability all go to making Fintan Kelly a natural. Fintan was born to be on stage and Playboy I think is his best performance to date - can’t wait to see what he’ll do next because he just continues to get better and better and Enniscorthy Drama is so proud to have made the discovery. The feedback as people left The Presentation Centre after each of the shows was uplifting, to fill the auditorium for four nights in a row is an achievement in itself and a most significant endorsement of Enniscorthy Drama - its cast, crew, director, chairman and committee and its beautifully attired tea-ladies and ushers. Following the revelation of the Arts Council’s investment approach for 2016, in which traditional musicians face a 41% cut to their funding, Sinn Féin MEP Liadh Ní Riada has called for extra support for traditional musicians. A member of the European Committee on Culture and Education, Ms Ní Riada said, "Although I welcome the Arts Council allocating additional funding from previous years, it's shameful that traditional musicians have been dealt such a huge blow by a 41% cut in their funding. "This isn't about the Arts council… it's about the Government’s continuous lip service to the sector. Year after year we see huge cuts inflicted on the industry as consecutive Arts, Heritage and Gaeltacht Ministers sit back and allow our heritage to be sliced.

Sinn Féin MEP Liadh Ní Riada

"Whilst the arts sector is an economic commodity, it also has a huge cultural importance with regards to identity and expression of culture. "In a year of celebration of our history, we need to invest more in our traditional artists in order to help them to continue not only with their work but also in preserving our cultural identity and heritage, both locally and nationally." n Marie Foley at the Oscar event in Kilcannon in February. MAJOR RENEWAL PLANNED FOR TRINITY WHARF Wexford County Council Chief Executive Tom Enright has announced ambitious plans for the large scale re-development of a 10 acre brown-field site in Wexford Town. Trinity Wharf overlooks Wexford Estuary and is close to the Crescent and Wexford Town centre. Wexford County Council has recently acquired the entire site for €800,000, which is understood to be around 10% of its cost 10 years ago. The Council will shortly appoint consultants to prepare an overall masterplan for its comprehensive re-development. Since taking up his position in Wexford County Council in 2014, Mr Enright has expressed the need to develop a high-quality business park for the town which would provide large-scale clustered corporate office space and sees the iconic Trinity Wharf site as an ideal location for such a venture. The overall design concept for the site is at an early stage, but the proposed development is likely to include a mix of modern office space, hotel accommodation and residential units. Total investment is estimated at some €35 million.

Wexford County Council Chief Executive tom Enright Minister Brendan Howlin has welcomed the announcement, describing the proposed re-development of the site as a “gamechanger” in on-going efforts to increase office-based employment opportunities in County Wexford. Cathaoirleach of Wexford County Council, Councillor Tony Dempsey, also praised the initiative and promised the full support of the elected members in advancing the project. CEO of Wexford Chamber of Commerce, Madeline Quirke, also

endorsed the re-development of Trinity Wharf and expressed strong support on behalf of the business community for the project. Mr Enright acknowledges that to create the right environment to attract and retain employment, a mix of uses is required on the Trinity Wharf site. This mix could include public amenities, a marina, a hotel, restaurants and a modest level of residential accommodation located alongside the large-scale corporate office development. Mr Enright believes that the iconic Trinity Wharf site has the potential to be a location where in excess of 1,000 people could be employed over the next 5 to 10 years, possibly in internationally traded services such as finance and insurance. Mr Enright confirmed that the development will be delivered through a publicprivate-partnership arrangement and that the Council has already had initial discussions with a number of potential investors and the IDA. Mr. Enright also agrees that the Council’s decision to lead the development of high-quality office accommodation will attract further jobs to Wexford. “We need to create the space for existing local

companies to expand into. The very high demand and cost of office accommodation in Dublin also provides a unique opportunity for Wexford to attract new companies here, as the significantly improved road access brings us very close to the capital. More often than not, companies are under time pressure to establish their presence quickly and get up and running. They require readily available, attractive, cost-effective, large-scale modern office facilities and Trinity Wharf will meet all of those criteria” said Mr. Enright. Mr Enright sees the Trinity Wharf development as one of a range of measures that Wexford County Council is leading to provide property solutions for business and says other developments are planned. “We are currently at an advanced stage of developing proposals in each of the key towns of Enniscorthy, Gorey and New Ross and we will be outlining our plans for these in the coming weeks.” He added, “Each proposal will be different and will meet specific business needs which the Council has identified from research it has undertaken”. n
