2016 will be long be remembered in the Enniscorthy area for the amazing array of events held to commemorate the 1916 Rising. We have lots of coverage of recent happenings particularly on page 19. On 23rd May one of the last major events to commemorate 1916 took place in the beautiful setting of the garden at The Presentation Centre where Wexford County Council unveiled a 1916 Proclamation Plaque reminding us one again of the Rising, and the huge sacrifices made by the participants. All of us here in the Slaney News wish all our readers an enjoyable summer, and we hope to see lots of you at the various festivals in town so don’t forget to cut out and keep our handy Festival Guide (see page 14). – Frank Corcoran

Culture Bid Wexford’s ambitious bid to cohost the European Capital of Culture in 2020 moved a step closer to realisation on 9th May last when Wexford County Council unanimously endorsed a Regional Cultural Strategy for the South East Region. The Strategy is a key element of the joint bid by Wexford, Waterford and Kilkenny to be designated as the European Capital of Culture for 2020. The partnership application from the three counties is under the name “The Three Sisters”. The designation process is a competitive one, with The Three Sisters bid already shortlisted to the final stage where it has been joined by Galway and Limerick in competing for the coveted accolade. The Bid Team has also produced a Cultural Programme, which is a core part of the Region’s bid, detailing over 30 large-scale programmes, each designed to demonstrate the best that the region has to offer in terms of cultural practices and events. If the bid is successful it is expected that there would be investment opportunities, enterprise creation, and a very significant increase in visitor number to the three counties. n

What internet speeD can We expect in the near future?

The Internet is just a few decades old, but in that short span of time it has experienced significant changes. It grew out of a hodgepodge of independent networks into a global entity. It serves as a platform for business, communication, entertainment and education. And you can connect to this enormous network through dozens of different devices. What's next? When you can call up minute trivia about the most obscure subject you can think of with a couple of taps on a smartphone screen, where else can you go? The answer isn't entirely clear, but the possibilities are exciting. One thing that seems certain is that data transmission speeds will increase globally. According to Akamai Technologies, which publishes a quarterly State of the Internet report, the average global data transmission speed in late 2009 was 1.7 megabits per second [source: Akamai]. Compare that to the record for data transmission speed set by Bell Labs: 100 petabits per second [source: PhysOrg]. That's equivalent to 100 billion megabits per second. At that speed, you could transmit 400 DVDs worth of data every second. That's an enormous gap between what's currently possible and what's commercially available. But as time passes, the costs of producing ultra-high-speed networks will decrease. Eventually, the average consumer will be able to download a high-definition movie in a second or play cloud-based video games without a hint of lag. Even as wired connections reach unprecedented speeds, wireless technology continues to evolve. Technologies like LTE and WiMAX give us the ability to access the Internet wirelessly at speeds comparable to broadband connections. It also opens the doors for portable devices like smartphones, laptops and tablets to plug into the Internet without the need for wires. n Ferns Computer Services has been in business in Ferns since May 2007. Established by David Pohludek, it has a huge clientele base all over Co. Wexford and beyond.

Brooklyn comes to Enniscorthy Castle Following the extraordinary success of the Colm toibin novel Brooklyn and the subsequent making of much of the movie in Enniscorthy, Wexford County Council is pleased to announce the opening of a specially commissioned Exhibition entitled ‘Colm toibin & brooklyn – the book and the Movie’. The much anticipated Exhibition was officially opened on Friday 13th May by Chairman of Enniscorthy Municipal District Council, Mr. Paddy Kavanagh, who told the large gathering at the Castle that he had gone to school with Colm Toibin and was happy and proud to be opening this nostalgic Exhibition honoring Colm Toibin in his hometown. He said it was amazing the impact this book and film is having around the world resonating with emigrants everywhere and putting Enniscorthy very much on the global map. And this, in the main, is due to Colm himself who, commenting on the Exhibition, said: ‘In Brooklyn I used an Enniscorthy that was both real and remembered. It was essential for the novel that Eilis Lacey had deep roots in the town, not only strong emotional connections with her family, but also with the very streets and the atmosphere of Enniscorthy. It was important that the details be particular and exact. This Exhibition honours that idea of place, that each place has a spirit of its own, and that Enniscorthy’s spirit is strong and matters to people who live in the town, and remains with people who come as visitors.’ On behalf of Enniscorthy Chamber of Commerce,

Chairman John Burke O’Leary complimented the Council and the creators, Malcolm McDonald and Liam Doyle, on a most wonderful Exhibition depicting everyday life in early 1950s Ireland and in particular Enniscorthy through reproduction of some of the most iconic sets in the film – Mrs. Kelly’s typical local grocery and provisions shop and the typical ‘for visitors’ parlour – and we all had one of them Mr. O’Leary said. He went on to praise Cathy Keane from Galway for seeing the

potential in the whole Brooklyn package and complimented her and the Brooklyn Committee set up under the Chamber who have produced an excellent Brooklyn Tour Map. Cathy Keane said that she was delighted to be launching the Brooklyn Map for the occasion and thanked Siobhan O’Neill, Wexford Tourism O f f i c e r, a n d P a d r a i g O’Gorman, Town Manager, for all the help and assistance given. She said that she had been met with nothing but Pic: Maria Nolan

John Carley, Cllr Paddy Kavanagh, Barbara Tobin and Minister Paul Kehoe at the exhibition launch in Enniscorthy Castle.

enthusiasm and positivity whenever she went with yet another Brooklyn idea to the ‘powers that be’. Everyone is most approachable and eager to assist. Cathy went on to say that it is surprising how many people now associate Enniscorthy with Brooklyn – many of the visitors that she has met in her Heritage Bus Tours business around the county and indeed around the country will automatically say ‘Brooklyn’ when you say you are from Enniscorthy. It’s becoming almost as well known as Vinegar Hill! Before concluding, Town Manager Padraig O’Gorman paid tribute to the staff of the Castle and also to Michael Bennett who was extremely influential in securing the film for the town. He then called on the eloquent Jimmy Gahan to wish Eric Barron a very happy, special birthday and lead the gathering in a rendition of Happy Birthday. The Exhibition is now open to the general public and judging by the extraordinary success of the book and film to date it is certain to prove a highly popular attraction in Enniscorthy and a ‘must see’ for locals and visitors alike. Well done to all for adding another dimension to our town for the visitor to enjoy and for us Scalders to be proud of, after all how many towns in Ireland can boast a Norman castle, a 1798 battle-site as well known as Vinegar Hill, the Athenaeum where our Wexford Volunteers took and held the town for five days and now a link to Brooklyn – the book and the movie! Not bad eh for a small town! – Maria Nolan

PAUL KEHOE APPOINTED TO CABINET AS MINISTER WITH SPECIAL RESPONSIBILITY FOR DEFENCE Co. Wexford tD, Paul kehoe, has spoken of his delight at his appointment to government as Minister with special responsibility for Defence. “I was extremely humbled to be asked by An Taoiseach, Enda Kenny, to serve in the new Government. Having spent the last five years in Government as Minister of State for Defence and Government Chief Whip, I am a very proud Wexfordman to be returning to the Cabinet table. Being asked to serve again shows the value of my work over the last number of years and I am delighted that my work has been recognised with this sig-

nificant promotion… I look forward to dedicating myself fulltime to the business of defence… The men and women of the Irish Defence forces represent Ireland with courage, valor and fortitude wherever they are asked to serve and I look forward to working with them all to ensure that they are provided with the resources and support to continue to play their part in our continued prosperity, security and international reputation. “… The contribution of the Defence Forces to the 1916 centenary has made a lasting impression on the public. It has really enhanced the commemoration

by the State of these events… Of course, there is so much more to the work of the Defence Forces. This was seen in the contribution to the flood response at home as well as in overseas missions in troubled parts of the world. The L.E. Roisin is just one taking up station in the humanitarian response to the migrant crisis in the Mediterranean. “With the budget of €900m, I will be working to ensure the ongoing modernisation and reform of the Defence Forces to ensure that they continue to be trained and equipped to deliver on all of their roles. There is a

big programme of work on Human Resources and on the procurement of new equipment and capital investment. As with the public service generally, there are challenges in attracting and retaining the full range of skills. We also have an ambitious recruitment campaign underway with a particular emphasis on increasing the number of women in the Defence Forces. “I am honoured to be asked to serve and look forward to my role in leading the Dept of the Defence and representing the people and County Wexford in government.“ n

Wexford’s Rising – opening of new 1916 exhibition A new 1916 Exhibition was formally opened in the Athenaeum, Enniscorthy, on Wednesday, 27th April, a date deliberately chosen to coincide with the date 100 years ago in 1916 when the building served as the hQ of the Volunteers and Cumann na mban for those fateful five days when a Republic was declared in Enniscorthy. On 27th April 1916 at approx. 4am – a group of about 150 Volunteers and Cumann na mBan members assembled outside Pat Keegan’s house in Irish Street, armed themselves with rifles, revolvers, ammunition and pikes and under the command of Commandant Peter Paul Galligan, marched up Irish Street, through the Market S q u a re a n d o n t o t h e Athenaeum. The tricolour was hoisted over the Athenaeum by three members of Cumann na mBan and saluted by a firing party under Galligan’s command. At 4pm on 27th April 2016 the new 1916 Exhibition was opened appropriately by Colm Galligan, son of Peter Paul Galligan, in front of a large audience of dignitaries and family members of the Volunteers and

members of Enniscorthy’s reenactment society in full Irish Volunteer and Cumann na mBan uniform. Paddy Kavanagh, Chairman of Enniscorthy Municipal District Council, presented Colm Galligan with a commemorative Enniscorthy 1916 pin designed by local jewellers, Bourkes. Grainne Doran, County Archivist, was MC for the event and gave a detailed account of the new Exhibition that she has worked on 24/7 to bring to fruition. In 1916 the main hall in the Athenaeum was used as the sleeping quarters for the men offduty and as an emergency hospital run by Cumann na mBan, while the areas on the ground floor were used as administrative offices and as a kitchen. The new exhibition tells the story of Easter Week from the perspective of the rebels in County Wexford. Visitors are encouraged to pick up newspapers from the period, to listen in on a Council of War and to immerse themselves in the whole experience, where the story is revealed as much by the environment around them as by the information panels on the wall. There are six dis-

tinct spaces in total – the first four recreate the common room, a hospital and kitchen area, War Council office and Secretary’s office. Original artefacts jostle with reproductions to create a sense of time and place, and everything visitors see or hear is informed by documentary sources and witness statements of the time. The remaining two rooms look at the aftermath of the Rising. Original artefacts are housed in the first of these rooms, while scaled-models of some of the key buildings of Enniscorthy in 1916 are near completion by local craftsman Liam Doyle. In the Audio-Visual room, a compilation of short films, documentaries, interviews and songs from the various commemorative projects that were commissioned by Wexford County Council for this year’s commemorations will be shown on a rotating basis. A searchable database of people from County Wexford who participated in the Rising is nearing completion which will take the form of a short biographical note on each individual, accompanied by a photograph of the participant, where available. In this respect, it will

be as important a resource for family history research as it will be to put a face on the name of rank and file members who may otherwise have gone undocumented. ‘When we were planning a new exhibition to mark the centenary of the 1916 Rising, we began looking at different ways to engage visitors rather than the traditional exhibition set-up where there is lots of text on panels accompanied by some original and replica artefacts’, explains Gráinne Doran, cura-

tor of the exhibition. ‘Because of their excellent track record in designing and installing exhibitions, we approached Marc Roosli from Mirador Media along with Dr Ronan O’Flaherty of Crane Bag Consulting and the end result today is what I hope people will agree is a unique visitor experience’. A Roll of Honour on the wall in the corridor lists all those men and women from County Wexford who have been identified thus far as having participated in the 1916 Rising.

‘There are many different strands to this exhibition which combine to create a lasting testament to the memory of those men and women who made such a huge sacrifice and whose extraordinary determination, perseverance and zeal in furthering the cause for national independence has now been adequately recognised and remembered.’ So please call in and see this wonderful Exhibition for yourself. – Maria Nolan

Final performance in National Tour at Athenaeum The final performance of the 1916 Song Project National Tour ended on a high note on Saturday 14th May appropriately enough at the Athenaeum with local singer Paul O’Reilly’s rousing rendition of his own composition The Rise of the Wexford Volunteers. The concert, which was a resounding success playing to a packed Athenaeum auditorium, featured newly composed songs on 1916 and included three Wexford singer/songwriters, renowned traditional singer and song collector Paddy Berry of Drinagh, multi-talented writer/poet/playwright and singer Paul O’Reilly from Enniscorthy and Aileen Lambert from Ballindaggin, who co-devised and produced the project with her colleague Michael Fortune.

This is Ireland’s premier traditional song event for the 2016 Commemorations, and through the vision of Lambert and Fortune, combined with the skills of the singers involved, the project has launched a new body of songs into the traditional song repertoire for decades and centuries to come. The 1916 Song Project is based around the principles of shared knowledge, support and co-operation and includes some of the country’s most respected traditional singers and songwriters and the appreciative Athenaeum audience heard wonderful pieces like April 1916 from Fergus Russell, May Moran of Enniscorthy from Aileen Lambert, a tribute to Liam Mellows by Sandra Joyce, Aspirations by Jerry O’Reilly, A Schoolhouse in Ros Muc by John Tunney, Two

Brothers by Rosie Ni Ghalloglaigh, Where Ballyfinboy Waters Flow by Larry Joy, etc, and the evergreen Paddy Berry gave us all a laugh with Granda’s Big Brass Lock. It was a most excellent event with many of the songs about previously unsung heroes or about places and events connected to Easter 1916, each extremely well written and performed with amazing lyrics that invite us to reflect and explore new perspectives whilst enjoying the diverse singing styles from around the country. The Athenaeum audience of course was rather partisan with the greatest applause of the evening going to our own Paul O’Reilly and his wonderful The Rise of the Wexford Volunteers. – Maria Nolan

Two stalwarts of Enniscorthy theatre, Michael Dunbar and Andy Doyle, are behind a new theatre group – Scalder Theatre Company – which is in the middle of the premiere run of the new Billy Roche play “Of Mornington” in the Jerome Hynes Theatre in the National Opera House, Wexford, continuing to the 28th May. Michael is in the director’s chair and Andy is threading the boards with Jack Matthews and Gayle Jordan. Not surprisingly tickets are selling well but at the time of going to press there were still some available at the National Opera House. Tel: 053-9122400 before it’s too late! n

alice & Missing county wexford Youth Theatre Drama – 26 May, 27 May, 28 May Double-bill with County Wexford Youth Theatre Alice: Based on Lewis Carroll’s Alice in Wonderland. The youngest youth theatre members present a new take on the famous adventure story by Lewis Carroll. Performed in their inimitable metatheatre style, the play explores loss of innocence, nonsense, justice and time and space in a hilarious new version with a fabulous, trippy 1970’s vibe! Missing: A new play devised by the members. It explores what happens when a child is abducted by a stranger. A young child disappears from her family home, there are no obvious clues, no ransom note, no communication from the abductor. A group of friends of the missing girl meet up and through their loss and grief try to help find her. A play steeped in realism where everything is not as it seems.

A charity concert will be held in Clayton Whites Hotel on Tuesday, 31st May, where two unique collaborations have been formed with the mutual goal of raising funds to provide skills training for children at the Bobleo Children’s School in Kitale, Kenya. First on stage at 7pm will be The Wedges – the stars of BBC Wales and theatre fame will entertain with a night of song, music and comedy. They performed in Whites Hotel last year to a full house that raised €6,000 to build a school in Zambia. Wexford’s most celebrated band on the scene right now, Corner Boy, will also perform kicking off at 10pm with their unique blend of folk, trad and rock. The second collaboration is in the form of the groups behind the charity concert. Sport for

A Team Effort! The team behind the incredibly successful “A Night on the Hill” – see below.

A Night on the Hill wows Athenaeum audiences Paul O’Reilly is certainly a man going places if the response to his first play A Night on the Hill is anything to go by.

The playwright Paul O’Reilly on the famous Athenaeum staircase. Pic: Maria Nolan.

Audiences who attended the recent four-night run at the Athenaeum, with two matinees also, were blown away by the talent of this gifted Scalder who has produced a piece of drama that will, I have no doubt, be talked about in 100 years time at the bicentenary commemorations. Beautifully written, capturing all of the nuances, dilemmas and inner traumas of the time, this piece of drama is written from everyone’s point of view or is, at the very least, sympathetic to all factions. Although a work of fiction, it tells it very much the way it was. Paul’s feeling for the period is obvious and his treatment of his characters is compassionate and understanding and as each of their individual stories expertly unfolds, we the audience develop a tolerance for each that perhaps surprises us as Enniscorthians. The dialect, the wit, the humour are so Enniscorthy and when the characters talk of hearing Pearse speak at the Athenaeum, or about the British soldiers camped at the Showgrounds, or of Liam Mellows drilling on Vinegar Hill,

it makes it all so close and so real particularly when one is watching from the Athenaeum auditorium. This isn’t just a play, this is an experience, this is a production by Enniscorthy Drama coming from an idea in 2015 to commission a play for Enniscorthy for 2016 – something to leave behind from the 2016 Commemorations for future generations to enjoy. The group wanted this work to be for the town, by the town, of the town but most of all about the town and its unique role in the birth of our Nation and Paul O’Reilly was the man challenged with the onerous task and took it on despite other commitments and has created something that we can all be proud of. This play tells the story of our history as Paul first of all sets it on Vinegar Hill and gets his characters to make reference to ‘98. There couldn’t help but be a 1916 in Enniscorthy not when it lies in the shadow of The Hill. We can never forget who we are or where we came from as the Bull (Fintan Kelly) calls Paddy (Fergal Kelly) ‘the son

of a Planter’ and Paddy refers to the Bull (Fintan Kelly) and Rash (Michael Whelan) as ‘gombeen Rapparees men’. Director Jimmy Kavanagh has surpassed himself on this production – it is so well done from the set to lighting, to costumes, to stage direction to video graphics to the brilliant performances of the cast. The three male parts of Bull (Fintan Kelly) Rash (Michael Whelan) and Paddy (Fergal Kelly) are so well cast and compliment each other so excellently. Bull, the Irish Volunteer who believed everything Pearse said and is finding it so difficult in the aftermath of the Rising to come to terms with the doubts and inner demons surging inside him; Paddy, the son of the Planter who left Enniscorthy because of religious bigotry and intolerance and is now back arresting many of those who ruined his life and forced him to leave; and Rash, the rather pathetic Joker in the Pack who keeps us all laughing amid the trauma and the tragedy, all give tremendous performances worthy of any stage in any theatre in Ireland. And the three ladies –

Cathleen Ni Houlihan (Ireland) played by Julie Fox who does everything she does well, and Athena (Annemarie Whelan) the appropriately named Muse who says everything almost without saying a word, and with those explicit facial expressions, jerry laugh and whispered asides gives a fantastic performance of that annoying inner voice that we all know so well, and Margo Whelan as Birdie gives one of her best and

most powerful performances ever for Enniscorthy Drama as the love interest of the play. This is a play that will stay with you long after the curtain comes down and one that we hope will remain in Enniscorthy literary annals as long as Vinegar Hill remains on our horizon and drama remains in our hearts. Paul O’Reilly and Enniscorthy Drama take a bow! – Maria Nolan

Fintan Kelly and Fergal Kelly confront each other on stage at the Athenaeum. Pic: Maria Nolan. Enniscorthy Drama Group is proud to announce the cast for its upcoming play "The Lost Weekend" written by Padraic McIntyre. The cast will consist of Michele Whelan, Julie Fox, Margo Whelan, Anne Marie Whelan, Una Murphy and Béibhinn Whelan. This play is comedy at its best and EDG is excited to bring it to you on Thursday the 30th of June for three consecutive nights. Full details in our next issue of 22nd June.

25 May 2016 "Where Is My Mind?", a photo exhibition by Dave Hingerty of musicians and tour locations will be opened by Colm Mac Con Iomaire on Sunday, May 29, at the Courthouse Arts Centre, Tinahely, from 4pm to 6pm. Dave is a resident of Co. Wicklow. Members of the public will however have the opportunity to view the exhibition in the Courthouse from Saturday, May 21. The photographs represent the theme of duality which we all know, whereby people are engaged on one level with the world around them, but are often in a very different place in their mind. Dave’s work is very much Access-All-Areas photography. All profits from sales of prints go to the Alzheimer Society of Ireland. The exhibition runs until Saturday, June 25. Opening times: Wednesday, 10.00am to 1.00pm; Thursday to Saturday, 9.30am to 5.30pm.

PEOPLE MAKE FESTIVALS – So let’s make this a great one! Enniscorthy shines best during festival season when the streets come alive with dance, music and colour. To kick off the seas o n o f f u n , w e h ave t h e Enniscorthy Street Rhythms Dance Fest on the 28th & 29th May. The Street Rhythms Fest is run by a dedicated committee of five volunteers and through fundraising and the suppor t of the Enniscorthy Municipal District of Wexford County Council, and Enniscorthy Credit Union, they are able to bring this vibrant festival to our town. There will be some changes to the festival this year but all the old favourites will still be happening. SATURDAY: This year on Saturday, in conjunction with the World Day for Cultural Diversity Seminar, we

Mickey & Minnie Mouse

will be showcasing some of the unique talents that make up Enniscorthy. Bellydancing, Rap, Hip Hop, Irish Dancing, Latin Dancing, Traditional Roma Dance to name but a few. There will also be a Drum Circle so a perfect opportunity for you to join in with the activities and have a lot of fun. Nothing finishes off a day of fun better than a Party. So for all the children who still have bucketloads of energy – you can hit the dance floor in the Square and rock your stuff!!! But leave plenty of energy for Sunday. On Saturday and Sunday Rafter Street will host Craft in Motion – local crafters and traders will be out in force to exhibit their skills and talents. It is really worth taking the time to browse through the stalls and maybe pick up a few unique bits as you go along. Keep

an eye out for crafts you can get involved in – painting your own piece of pottery and getting it fired, something you will have forever. Craft in Motion will be happening for the two days of the festival – and stop off with our Magician for a laugh and of course some unbelievable tricks. SUNDAY: On Sunday – Baby Bop kicks off the festival at 11.30am in the Castle. Always a great draw and such great fun for the kids to come and meet their Disney heroes. Not to be missed. The Puppet Show follows straight afterwards with some Balloon Making thrown in. Fair ytales in the Castle – Cinderella, Lost in Storytime. Cinderella has lost her story and needs all the boys and girls to help her find it, as she goes from fairytale to fairytale – she will need all their help to answer the

clues along the way. Starts at 1.30pm until 5.00pm. The Square will kick off at 12.30 with Jazz – sit back, grab a coffee and enjoy, of course feel free to take to the dance stage and dance the afternoon away. Following the jazz we will have a mix of Irish music, dance and song, magic, fashion, rock ‘n’ roll and of course some comedy. 1916 Commemorations in Enniscorthy

19

A look back with local photographer Ken Hayes

Ken Hayes will be holding an exhibition in the 1798 Centre from 4th June until the end of August entitled ‘Red Coats & Rebels’ – A selection of his stunning pictures from the 1798 Vinegar Hill Re-enactments over recent years.

Republic Day celebrated Republic Day, 24th April, was a busy one for Enniscorthy Historic & Re-enactment Society beginning at Market Square, Enniscorthy, at 1.30pm, marching to the Abbey Square led by piper supreme, Liam Doyle, where MC for the commemorations Rory O’Connor called on Graham Cadogan to read the Proclamation. This was followed by a lament and a Minutes Silence for all those who lost their lives in the 1916 Rising. Rory then called on Chairman of the 1916 Committee, Sean Og Doyle, who gave a detailed account of all that happened on 24th April 1916 finishing with that beautiful poem by Sean’s son Eamonn Doyle, I Am A Town, I Am Enniscorthy. Sean paid tribute to Enniscorthy Historic & Re-

enactment Society for adding authenticity to this occasion and to all others over the past 12 months, complimenting their discipline, attention to detail and the meticulous way they were always attired. They are the Volunteers of 2016 he said. Sean laid a wreath at the Seamus Rafter Monument and proceedings concluded with everyone singing Amhrán na bFhiann. From there it was on to Enniscorthy Golf Club for a very special commemoration t o m a r k R e p u b l i c D a y. Grandsons of Patrick Pearse and TD Sinnott - Michael Pearse and Fr. Michael Sinnott, unveiled a Proclamation Stone in front of the clubhouse donated by Enniscorthy Municipal District Council, with bugler Anthony Nolan playing the Last Post

and Alice Medcalf, one of the Golf Club’s youngest members, doing an excellent job of reading the Proclamation, which was followed by a respectful Minutes Silence. Captain of the Golf Club Liam Dunbar thanked all for coming especially Ruairi de Valera grandson of Eamonn de Valera who has been living in the area for the past twelve years saying that his presence at the event on this day of all days made the occasion all the more special for everyone. Liam also had particular mention for the Enniscorthy Historical Re-enactment Society and the Monageer Volunteers and invited all to join him in the Clubhouse for refreshments and traditional entertainment. A very special day. – Maria Nolan

Patriot’s Flag monument at Abbey Square, Enniscorthy. Next it was on to The Athenaeum for the official opening of the Co. Wexford 1916 Exhibition (see article page 8). Then it was across the Slaney to commemorate Enniscorthy man, Thomas Wafer, who was killed in action in Dublin in 1916. The unveiling of a plaque in his honour at Springvalley took place at 5pm followed by light refresments in the nearby Templeshannon Community Centre. Finally, that evening, there was a unique public ceremony in the Riverside Park Hotel, Enniscorthy, to recognise and honour the relatives of those who participated in the 1916 Rising in County Wexford.

Wexford County Council presented each relative with a specially commissioned scroll recognising that person’s unique link to the 1916 Rising in Wexford. n

An Economic Rising at The Athenaeum The Hughes Blake Tax and Economic Conference drew a large audience to the newly refurbished Athenaeum in Enniscorthy on Thursday evening 28th April. The Athenaeum looked resplendent for its first major business event since its extensive makeover as Enniscorthy accounting firm Hughes Blake hosted the second instalment of

its hugely successful Tax and Economic Conference 'Ireland 2016: an Economic Rising?' A senior executive, Bernard Swords, from top stockbroking firm, Goodbody, spoke at the conference which focused on the key tax and economic issues facing the country and the South East region. Over 200 business leaders attended the first instalment of

the conference at the Shelbourne Hotel in Dublin on Thursday 21st April. In the Athenaeum approximately 100 attendees heard details from partners of Hughes Blake of the very latest tax strategies being employed by entrepreneurial, owner-manager and family-owned businesses against an uncertain economic and political backdrop. The Chief Investment Officer of Goodbody Stockbrokers, Bernard Swords, addressed the Enniscorthy audience with his talk entitled 'Climbing the Wall of Worry', which set out the very latest Goodbody research on the key economic risks associated with ongoing political uncertainty. Thankfully, the conclusion of the talk was that in relation to many issues such as Brexit 'mountains were being made of molehills' and that Ireland was an 'island of stability in a sea of madness'. The historic event tied in with a 100-year commemoration within Hughes Blake – the founder of the firm, Frederick Blake, began his career in tax in July 1916 when he was appointed

BlAISE lAuNCHES NEW BooK Blaise Brosnan, renowned business advisor, strategy specialist and highly acclaimed author of ‘You Are The Limiting Factor’ and ‘Jack’, launched his new book ‘I Dare You – Win The Debate In Your Own Head’ at Wexford Library, Mallin Street, on 19th May. Former Minister for Public Expenditure and Reform, Brendan Howlin TD, assisted in launching this highly anticipated book in which Blaise teaches the reader that it is what we do with our opportunities and challenges that will ultimately count. The book has been described as “an absolute must read” for business owners and entrepreneurs as well as those looking to overcome challenges as it teaches us to soar to our highest potential, achieving our dreams along the way. n

Surveyor of Taxes by the old Irish Inland Revenue. Managing Partner, Neil Hughes, said 'it was hugely important to us that we would host the conference not only in Dublin, but also in our home town of Enniscorthy. The reopening of the Athenaeum, we believe, gives the perfect platform to highlight the key issues being faced currently by SME businesses in the South East. We all know that a successful future for the Athenaeum depends on it being used regularly and once again being at the heart of Enniscorthy society. The conference will, we hope, contribute to that and we hope the delegates will find that the information will be useful to their businesses over the course of this year.’ The prestigious event lasted approximately two and a half hours with attendees being invited to view the iconic building and mix and mingle while partaking of deliciously prepared edibles from the Westgate Centre and a glass of wine or two. BOI showcasing Enniscorthy

Councillor Keith Doyle opens the Enniscorthy Enterprise Town event. Pic: Maria Nolan. Enniscorthy Enterprise Town at the CBS on Friday 6th and Saturday 7th May under the auspices of Bank of Ireland and organised by Helena Kirwan and her Steering Committee Jimmy Gahan, John O’Connor, Angela Devitt, Barrie Sutton, Michael Bennett and John Burke O’Leary, was a wonderful opportunity for Enniscorthy to sell itself as a great place to do business and a great place to live. Opened by Councillor Keith Doyle and with approximately 80 stands on both days, the CBS gym arena was buzzing as local clubs, groups, organisations and

businesses liaised and networked and learned a lot from each other. As the guest speaker, the legendary Mickey Harte put it, ‘If you want people to be enthused about you, your group, your club or your business, then firstly you have to be enthusiastic about it.’ ‘You have to be self motivated’, he said, ‘and self motivated people are people with a lot of character. And character is doing the right thing when noone is looking.’ Mr. Harte took the time to visit each and every one of the stands and had his photo taken with nearly everyone in the building. He also

advised those listening to develop good people skills saying, ‘If you are not good with people you will get nothing out of them.’ A wise, kind, charming man Mickey Harte leaves you feeling good about yourself and glad that you have met him – now how’s that for good people skills. Karl Fitzpatrick, Managing Director of Chevron Training and Presenter of South East Radio’s ‘Business Matters’ hosted a Business Panel Discussion and yours truly compered a Fashion Show with O’Faolain’s, Put A Bow On It and Sofia’s Choice showing some outfits from their

beautiful summer 2016 collections giving people an opportunity to see the choice of excellent style and fashion available here in Enniscorthy. The fashion interlude concluded with a most splendid display of design, creativity and talent as transition year students and finalists in the Junk Kouture Finals at the 3 Arena – Sarah Figgis of Colaiste Bride and Mark Bolton Lee of the Meanscoil, performed a routine that would grace any stage as Egyptian Goddess Queen Zalika and the Button Thief – simply stunning. There was another spectac-

ular dance display from the South East Rock n Roll Club introduced by Richie Cotter, a kick-boxing display, a sports panel discussion with Declan O’Brien, Mags Darcy and Stella Sinnott hosted by County Council Chairman Tony Dempsey. There was also a special appearance from Elsa, Olaf and of course that magical evergreen duo Mickey and Minnie Mouse, all followed by the Superstars Stage Academy and Wexford Academy of Irish Dance and the fabulous Enniscorthy Choral Society. Newly appointed Minister of Defence, Paul Kehoe, was on the

premises and took his very first opportunity in his new position to be snapped with uniforms at the Enniscorthy Historic & Reenactment Society stand, as he posed with the re-enactors who were in a variety of period costumes. A wonderful Expo and great credit is due to Helena Kirwan and her team for bringing it to Enniscorthy, encouraging local trade and a sense of community, allowing people to see the depth and breadth of all that is on offer and available in this marvellous little town of ours. – Maria Nolan

Acquisitions drive turnover to €114m for the Pettitt SuperValu chain /Talbot Hotel Group Recent accounts filed show that business is on the up for Torski Ltd – the company behind the four-star Talbot Hotel Group and Pettitt’s SuperValu chain. The 2014 accounts declare a 7.5% increase in their hotel and retail business turnover to €114 million, two hotel acquisitions and the addition of the Dome Entertainment Centre in Carlow to the company assets. 2014 figures show that the group generated €89.5m of revenues in its supermarket business with its hotel trade accounting for €24.5m. The group operates The Talbot Hotel properties in Wexford town, Carlow and Stillorgan and during 2014 added The Oriel House Hotel and The Midleton Park Hotel to its hotel portfolio along with the Dome Entertainment Centre, a property adjacent to The Talbot Hotel Carlow. The company also operates six Pettitt’s SuperValu stores across Wexford,

Wicklow and Kildare. Managing Director of the Talbot Hotel Group, Mr. Philip Gavin said: “This is a very good news story with acquisitions and investments made in the hotel side of the business along with

continued investment and rebranding such as the recently rebranded Talbot Hotel Stillorgan, formerly the Stillorgan Park Hotel. Ongoing investment is being made in the Midleton Park Hotel to bring it to the group’s 4-star sta-

tus and an exciting and substantial investment of €2.5m is taking place throughout the group this year with the complete refurbishment of 250 rooms underway.” During the course of 2014 employment in The Talbot Hotel Group reached 500 and 450 people are employed across the retail sector of the company. More recently in January of this year the group announced the purchase of the ‘Stonebridge’ property on Wexford Quayside – a building featuring 73 luxury apartments and duplexes now branded the ‘Talbot Suites at Stonebridge’. The lavish Aparthotel will open in mid-June following a multi-million-euro investment. In 2014 Torski Ltd reported earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortisation to have increased by 13.6% to €5m and the directors shared a remuneration of €1.38m up from €1.23m in 2013. n

INDOS Financial, an independent AIFMD (Alternative Investment Fund Managers Directive) depositary, was started by Bill Prew in 2014 and its sole office in Ireland is located in Templeshannon, Enniscorthy. Since beginning operations in July 2014 in Enniscorthy it has gone from an initial three employees to a current workforce of nine and recently passed a significant milestone of $10 billion dollars under depositary at its Enniscorthy office. INDOS won the HFM award in recognition of its innovation as an independent depositary in a market otherwise dominated by

depositaries affiliated to fund administrators, exceptional clientfocused service delivery and strong growth over the past 12 months. INDOS beat stiff competition from other shortlisted finalists including BNY Mellon, State Street and Deutsche Bank. INDOS Financial specialises in providing independent AIFMD depositary services to alternative investment funds. INDOS was the first FCA (Financial Conduct Authority) authorised AIFMD Depositary in January 2014 and currently provides depositary services to over 50 funds that have over $10 bn in assets. Clients include EU and non-EU managers managing a broad range of open- and closedended alternative investment fund strategies ranging from hedge funds, to private equity, real estate and other closed-ended funds. n

The mood of the Enniscorthy & District Chamber of Commerce meeting on Wednesday 11th May at Riverside Park Hotel was positive and upbeat with members being informed by Chairman John Burke O’Leary that the newly appointed CEO would be taking up her position on Monday 16th May. Catriona Murphy will be establishing herself at the new premises on Weafer Street over the coming weeks and going forward all chamber business will operate from there. Much of the business of the meeting was taken up with the plethora of festivals scheduled for the summer season including Street Rhythms, Focal Wexford Literary Festival, Strawberry Culture & Food Festival, Enniscorthy Rockin’ Food Festival and Blackstairs Blues all contributing, the Chairman said, to marketing Enniscorthy as a great place to visit and a great place to live which is exactly what is needed if we are to attract more businesses into the town. He went on to compliment all those involved with the various festival committees and thanked them for their huge voluntary effort. Enniscorthy will indeed be a hub of festival activity with Food Stalls, Rock n Roll Dancers, Re-enactments, Cocktail Trails, Treasure Hunts, Celebrity Chefs, Fantasy at the Castle,

Poetry and Prose at the Athenaeum, and much, much more over the next three months and beyond. It was the general consensus of the meeting that Enniscorthy is definitely the place to be this summer and the Chamber will be doing everything it can to promote and market all that is happening in our town. The Brooklyn Committee was also complimented by the Chairman and members for organising the recent event at the Riverside Park Hotel and all were reminded that the Brooklyn Exhibition was opening at the Castle on Friday 13th May at 7pm and all were encouraged to attend. There was also an update on the Focal Wexford Literary Festival from 27th to 29th May with some of Ireland’s leading authors coming to town for panel discussions and workshops and the winners of the Colm Toibin Short Story Award and the 1916 Poem for Enniscorthy to be announced at the Festival. John Burke O’Leary concluded, ‘With the new Brooklyn Exhibition, the Focal Literary Festival and an excellent drama group in town who have just staged A Night on the Hill written by local playwright Paul O’Reilly, Enniscorthy is marketing itself as the cultural centre of the South East.’ – Maria Nolan

This month Joe Kavanagh looks at pets and holidays! At this time of year people are gearing up for holidays, be it from school, college or work. The long evenings and brighter mornings bring a sense of optimism and life about the place. Everyone seems to feel more alive when the sun shines! Even our pets are ‘chomping at the bit’ to get out for a walk, a run in the park or a gallop in the fields or on the beach. For those heading away on their holidays lots of planning has to go into it. Part of that planning will need to include your pet. If you’re taking your pet abroad then he or she will need a pet passport or have it up to date along with a certified health check before you leave. If you’re putting your dog or cat into boarding kennels while you’re away they too will require that their vaccinations are up to date and that you have a record of this. At this time of year we have lots of clients in for this very reason – it’s a good time to give them their annual ‘MOT’, the once-over to make sure everything is going well for them. Sometimes on this clinical exam we pick up abnormalities that may not be really obvious yet. The old adage ‘a stitch in time saves nine’ comes to mind as if you can ‘get in there’ before real pathology sets in, then you can help make a difference to the outcome. If you’re thinking about heading away it’ll be peace of mind knowing that your little friend is well looked after. We’ll do one part and help keep them in top shape as prevention is always better than cure. To help with it, since we are celebrating 75 years this year serving the people of Co. Wexford, we are giving a special offer for the month of June of full vaccinations… their annual vaccinations and kennel cough at 75% of the normal rate. This’ll help with your pet and your pockets too. n

On 4th May Enniscorthy CBS held its annual student awards night in the Riverside Park Hotel. Among the main winners were: Pierce Sinnott (above left, Student of the Year), Diarmuid Byrne (above centre, Edmund Rice Award), Conal Flood (above right, Sports Star of the Year Award).

Stories of 1916

The Co. Wexford Oral History Programme was launched at Enniscorthy Library on 28th April. It was a lively afternoon of chat and laughter as the most recent contributors to the Co. Wexford Oral History Programme were presented with CD copies of their interviews. The theme of this phase of the oral history programme was “Stories of 1916” and the interviewees were the children, nieces, nephews and grandchildren of some of those who participated in the 1916 Rising in Co. Wexford. The contributors celebrated their interviews with family and friends and listened with much curiosity to the sound of their own voices on CD recording. Contributors at this presentation included Joe O’Brien, Breda Donnelly and Michael O’Brien, Michael Doyle, Martin McClean, Noel Armstrong and Michael Byrne, Stephen Keegan, Brian

Cleary, Henry Goff, Des Fitzpatrick, Seamus Rafter, James Franklin, Dermot Fitzpatrick, Arthur French and Colm Galligan. All the interviews will be available in the near future on CD for loan from the mobile and branch libraries county-wide. The interviews will also be available as podcasts on the library website in the near future ensuring that relatives and researchers, far and wide, will have the opportunity to learn from and enjoy these wonderful recordings. Presenting the CDs to the participants, local Councillor, Kathleen Codd Nolan, representing Cllr Tony Demspey, Chairman of We x f o rd C o u n t y C o u n c i l , described memories as treasures and said that the public library service holds them in trust for future generations. “These interviews are such a valuable contribution to our knowledge of what happened in Co. Wexford dur-

ing that time and to Wexford’s memory of that time. They tell many previously unknown and unheard stories and honour the contribution made by those ancestors to Ireland’s quest for self determination and freedom.” The oral history recording project has been a runaway success with over 300 interviews completed so far. It is now a well established part of library activity and the interviews are borrowed frequently. Kathleen Codd Nolan thanked all those who had nominated people to date and those who had come forward for interview. The “Stories of 1916” oral history project is ongoing throughout this year. If anyone has a story to tell in relation to 1916 or a family member who might – a brochure and nomination form are available from all local libraries and on the internet at www.wexford.ie/library. – Maria Nolan

View from the Hill neW DISpenSatIon The present political dispensation where we have a minority Fine Gael and Independent Government depending on Fianna Fail support may be an opportunity for Enniscorthy and Co. Wexford generally. There is no doubt that the loss of Brendan Howlin as a powerful government minister is a body blow to the county. Like him, or detest him, Howlin delivered in spades for the constituency any time that he could. The new situation is different insofar as that, on the face of it, we will depend on Paul Kehoe to use his position as a Junior

Minister (effectively Minister for Defence) to ensure that we get our fair share of any goodies which are being distributed. However, the dependence of the government on Fianna Fail makes James Browne almost as powerful as the Fine Gael Junior Minister. Any time they wish Fianna Fail can force the issue on any matter which arises leaving Browne with the task of persuading his own colleagues of Co. Wexford’s economic needs. So let’s see what happens here and as to how the two Enniscorthy TDs work together for the benefit of their own area over the next year or two.

m o rt g a g e I n t e r e S t rateS Speaking of a new political dispensation it was obvious that we are in a different place when one looks at the success of Fianna Fail in getting the Mortgage Cap legislation through the Dáil recently. With the support of Sinn Fein and others, the government was forced to stand aside and allow the Dáil adopt the Bill. One can imagine the arrogant putdown such an effort would have received in the last Dáil. Fianna Fail are quite correct to raise the issue of the scandalous interest rates being charged to mortgage holders by the banks. The same banks are borrowing money at 0.08% and charging their customers up to 4.1% interest. A few years ago the country was up in arms against moneylenders who charged their captive customers exorbitant interest rates yet the respectable banks seem to think that what they are doing is acceptable. The whinges of some economists who predict that the result of the Fianna Fail Bill will be catastrophic for the economy can be taken with a pinch of salt when we consider that most of these so-called experts predicted

a soft landing for the economy right up to a few months before the crash. Hopefully we will see more of this. The power of the opposition to force the government to drop the recycle bin charges, signed into law by Alan Kelly before he left office, once again demonstrated the new political landscape. A hung Dail may not be such a bad thing after all. north Korea We read a lot about North Korea nowadays. You know, the Dictator Kim Jong-un, his nuclear bombs etc. Well I recently met a guy from there and I asked him how things were in his country. “I can’t complain”, he said. the garDaI There is no doubt that the vast majority of people in this country have the greatest of respect for the Gardai. We are all aware of the difficult task that many of them have on a day to day basis, particularly in our larger cities and urban areas. The issue of rural crime is a major problem which is also a matter for our garda force to deal with. While many of us complain about poor response times to calls and lack

Fitzgerald, and the Garda Commissioner, Noirin O’Sullivan, would want to start answering straight questions in an open and fair manner on these events before they bring the entire force into disrepute.

The Gardaí: understaffed and under resourced

of follow-up in some cases, people recognise that, in the main, these issues are a result of the force being understaffed and under resourced. None of this is the fault of the average garda on the street and most of us are well aware of this. However, there is a major difficulty with the goings on at the top of the force over the issue of whistleblowers etc. Without getting into the detail of all of this, which would take a column in itself, it is clear that somewhere along the line someone in the higher echelons of the force is not doing this country any service. All of this is feeding into a cul de sac where, if it is not properly dealt with and soon, will play into the hands of the merchants who delight in running down the institutions of the entire state. Our Minister for Justice, Frances

Summer on the Way Hopefully, weather-wise we will have a good summer this year. Co. Wexford is well placed as a tourist area for day-trippers from the capital and other parts of the country as well as longerstay visitors to our county. We can be proud of the hard work which has been put into promoting the county over the last few years and given half a chance it should begin to pay dividends. The recession, worldwide and nationally, is rolling back somewhat and some people have a few euro more in their pockets to spend and hopefully they will do that in the Sunny South East from which we will all benefit. Us locals have a role to play too in ensuring that where possible we spend whatever we can afford locally rather than take it all out of the county. n We are often asked: Who is the “View from the Hill” columnist? All we can say is that the author’s surname is NOT Doyle!

caroline gets motoring audi a1 review by Caroline Kidd the audi a1 is the entry level model into the audi range and promises a premium car experience within the compact dimensions of a small hatchback. With prices starting at €20,800 for 3-door petrol models, the a1 slots firmly into the premium small car class, where image and kerb appeal are the currency of sale. Though it’s the smallest car in the Audi range, the A1 has the presence of a larger car on the road. There are some customisation options available, for example you can change the colour of the roof to contrast with the body colour. Overall it’s a mature and stylish look for the A1. It’s in the cabin where the A1 really shows that it’s a cut above the rest. It’s really just a distilled down version of the cabins from bigger Audis, and the quality of the materials and classy layout do help

to justify the price tag for the car. Available as a 3-door or a 5-door Sportback model, there is enough room up front so as not to feel like you’re sitting on top of your passenger, but it is a bit more snug in the back. The boot is 270 litres, which is a reasonable size for a car like this. In 2015, Audi added two new three cylinder engines to the A1 range, one petrol and one diesel. My test car had the new 1.0-litre TFSI petrol unit with 95bhp. It’s a perfect match for this car and there is enough power on tap for it to never feel out of its depth, even on motorways. It’s cheap to run and even with the automatic gearbox on my test car it will return up to 67mpg. There’s a manual option too that returns about 64mpg. The new three cylinder diesel with 90bhp starts at €22,740 and is even more efficient. You can still choose

from the old 1.4-litre petrol engines (125bhp and 150bhp) and 1.6-litre diesel (116bhp) but really one of the new three cylinder units should suit most needs and keep the costs down too. The A1 has ‘big car’ refinement on the road and is very hushed at speed, even on the motorway. The A1 handles well with good grip, and the steering is precise and quick to respond. There’s a bit too little feedback from the steering for it to be a truly fun car to drive - it’s more of a comfortable, refined and predictable one. There are three trim levels - an entry level model, SE and S Line. Standard equipment is good, including air con, electric windows and mirrors, alloys, MMI infotainment system and a trip computer. SE is a good balance between price and equipment and adds rear parking sen-

sors, and a few interior and exterior changes like bigger alloys, sports seats, a centre armrest and LED rear lights. The A1 doesn’t come cheap but it does offer a high quality interior and the refined driving character of a larger car, so in that respect you get what you pay for. The new

engines deliver the efficiency and cheap running costs that small car buyers want and for those looking for something a little bit special, the Audi A1 is still a very desirable small car. model tested: audi a1 1.0tFSI 95 Se S tronic Price: €24,700 (A1 range

suzuki launches new baleno by Caroline Kidd Suzuki has just launched the new Baleno in Ireland, with pricing starting at €17,995. the Baleno will join the Celerio and Swift in Suzuki’s small car range, but fills the gap for a compact car with more interior space and a larger boot, while retaining attractive low pricing. The Baleno sits on a new platform that’s been developed with a focus on lightness, but also rigidity. The new car debuts a very on trend 1.0-litre three cylinder petrol engine with a healthy 110bhp output. A 1.2litre petrol ‘mild hybrid’ version with 89bhp is also available. The 1.0-litre engine is lively with plenty of power for over-

taking, and the refinement appears very good. Emissions of 105g CO2/km put the car in this configuration in tax band A3 (€190 per year), while the claimed economy is 63mpg. On a shorter test drive, the mild hybrid was not as lively to drive, though running costs are marginally cheaper. The list price for the hybrid version is €18,995. The entry model (1.0-litre Boosterjet SZ-T) at €17,995 is a car you might want to buy. Standard equipment includes 16” alloy wheels, air con, electric mirrors and front windows, remote central locking, touchscreen with navigation,

Bluetooth, MirrorLink and Apple CarPlay access, auto lights, front fog lights and rear privacy glass. The 1.0-litre Boosterjet in the top SZ-5 trim comes in at €19,495 and adds more including Radar Brake Control, keyless entry and go, electric rear windows, and even adaptive cruise control. The mild hybrid, SHVS 1.2 Dualjet SZ5, has a list price of €18,995, while the 1.0-litre Boosterjet SZ5 with an automatic comes in at €22,495. The new Suzuki Baleno will go on sale in Ireland in June and is definitely worth a look if you’re after a good value small car.

Enniscorthy Rugby Club SuCCeSS proVeS eLuSIVe The club just missed out on two major honours in the last weeks of an impressive season – falling at the last hurdle against Sligo in a bid to qualify for the AIL for the 2016/2017 season and then losing the Provincial Towns Final to Wicklow. To have got so close on both fronts was a tremendous achievement. And of course the club’s seconds won their Provincial Towns Cup competition.

Literary Feast for Festival Weekend Festival fever is about to hit enniscorthy as dancers and performers take to our streets and sidewalks and writers and poets fill our various locations and venues. This coming weekend, as Enniscorthy stages both the Street Rhythms Festival and the Focal Wexford Literary Festival, our town will become a Mecca for lovers of music, dance, art and culture everywhere. This is the third Wexford Literary Festival to be held in the town and in those three short years the Festival has gone from strength to strength in the main due to the creativity, vision and dedication of the very hard working Festival Committee and to the commitment to the arts of Enniscorthy Municipal District Council and Wexford County Council. This year the Festival can boast a fantastic line-up of new and existing talent kicking off at The Presentation Centre on Friday evening 27th May with an Open Mic Night of Poetry, Prose, Song and Drama, including local poets John Kelly, Joe Neal and Caroline Busher and local writers Imelda Carroll, Christine Masterson and Tom Mooney, editor of the

Enniscorthy Echo, who will read a travel article from his submission to the From Wexford With Love anthology. Local singer-songwriter Paul O’Reilly will perform his own composition The Rise of the Wexford Volunteers – a specially commissioned piece, part of the 1916 National Song Project. Ruth Frances Long (or R.F. Long) winner of The European Science Fiction Society Spirit of Dedication Award comes to us from Dublin and is the wellknown author of young adult fantasy such as The Treachery of Beautiful Things and A Crack in Everything, novels set in the world of demons, angels and fairies that exists alongside our own in modern-day Dublin. Ruth will delight and intrigue us with excerpts from her own work. Wexford Literary Festival also has an exclusive for Open Mic Night as co-founder, local author and current Festival Chairperson Carmel Harrington, along with members of Enniscorthy Drama Group – AnneMarie Whelan and Fergal Kelly, perform an excerpt from Carmel’s much anticipated fourth novel The Things I Should Have Told You not due for release until 8th

September. The many fans of Carmel’s books will be more than tempted to come along for this sneak preview. And speaking of drama Open Mic will also present a 15minute excerpt from Forget Me Knot – a play written and directed by Aoife Howell and performed by Loreto Secondary School students Alannah Corcoran, Aoife Cody Kane, Caoimhe O`Keeffe, Carla Fusciardi and Holly Rossiter, which tells the story of five children affected by the 1916 Rising. This excerpt deals with one of the characters, 16-year-old Mary Redmond and the effect the Rising had on her. Open Mic is a free event and begins at 8pm, all are welcome. On Saturday 28th May many of Ireland’s leading authors come together at the Church Institute for a full day of panel discussions and workshops under the following headings – Historical Fiction, Industry Experts, Debut Novelists, Children’s Fiction, Self Published and Crime Fiction. Guest speakers include Madeleine Keane, Jax Miller, H a z e l G a y n o r, C a r m e l Harrington, Claire Hennessy, Pat Fitzpatrick, Ava McCarthy, Frankie Gaffney, Catherine Ryan

Howard, Ruth Long, Carolann Copland, Andrea Carter, Joan Brady, Cat Hogan, Siobhan Davis, Karen Power, Mary McCauley, Caroline Busher and Margaret Madden. And at Enniscorthy Library from 10.30am to 11.30am well known children’s author E.R. Murray will host a Children’s Workshop which is another free event. The Festival will conclude with a Grande Finale on Sunday 29th May at that Enniscorthy icon, the Athenaeum, where the winners of the 1916 Poem for Enniscorthy and the Colm Toibin International Short Story Award will be announced and presented with their prizes at 3pm. With over 400 entries, some of them from around the world, the first ever Colm Toibin International Short Story Award has been a major success, with independent Judges Lisa Coen, Nuala O’Connor and Vanessa Fox O’Loughlin thrilled with the response and the quality of the writing. Who knows maybe this year’s Focal Wexford Literary Festival will unearth another Colm Toibin! – maria Nolan

OPEN CALL EXHIBITION OPENS AT PRESENTATION

Here she comes walking down the stairs Big smile, wide eyes, short black skirt, The slit in the side, leaves nothing to hide And down below high heel boots. Her very kinky black leather boots Serves me a distracted glance And just before my big breakfast. I'm on my knees, begged me please Oh please don't tease. Sit on the chair my love and worship the things, That turn you on for your eyes only From toe to knee the pride is yours. Unzip my knee high boots The coffee is coming and so is morning, the long and the short of it, breakfast with the girl in her long black boots. Walking on Grafton Street in her high heel boots. n

paintings, photographs and even a couple of sculptures and the variety was astounding with each piece completely different from the one before it and the one after it. Far be it from me to pretend that I am an art expert but then I am not a connoisseur of wine either but that doesn’t stop me enjoying it and, as with wine, I do know what I like and I was particularly taken by the stunning portrait of William Burroughs by David Duffy, the detail and character of the face is fascinating, my second piece was by Ed Doyle titled Country Life, a wonderful study of chickens in rich deep colours and finally I chose a piece of sculpture - Vinegar Hill `98, I loved the simplicity of this piece and I also think that it would make a fabulous gift or presentation for a visitor to the town. This Exhibition which runs until 24th June is a terrific oppor-

tunity to view the artistic talent of the locality and the county but it also gives each of the artists a forum to liaise and network with each other and with the local communities. I was actually at the Centre recently for an evening of traditional song with Niall Wall and friends and I noticed that many people were also viewing the exhibition as they entered and during the inverval – so it is already reaching out to people the community who may be visiting the Centre for a variety of reasons and will now see the exhibition and hopefully spread the word. And that is really what this Open Call is all about – making people aware of the wealth of artistic talent that surrounds us. So please come along and immerse yourselves in the inspirational work of these gifted artists. – maria Nolan
