Following the huge success of the Enniscorthy Street Rhythms Dance Fest, next up in the local summer festival calendar is the 49th edition of the Enniscorthy Strawberry, Music & Food Fest running from 22nd to 26th June. We carry the full programme on pages 16-17. Enjoy! Fine gael TD for Wexford, Minister Paul Kehoe, has welcomed the announcement by the Minister for Health, Simon Harris, of the commencement order for a new primary care centre in Wexford Town. “The Minister for Health, Simon Harris, has confirmed to me that the European Investment Bank is to invest €70 million in 14 Primary Care Centres across Ireland, and I am delighted to say that one of them will be located in Wexford. “This new Primary Care Centre, to be located on Grogan’s Road in Wexford will be a real boost for Wexford and the wider county. Local people will be able to access a wide range of services including GP, com-
munity nursing, dental, occupational therapy, physiotherapy, social work, speech & language therapy, mental health, counselling, home help and nutrition. It is envisaged that they will be open at least five days a week, with extra hours at weekends and evenings for some services. “The reason the government has been prioritising the delivery of primary care centres is so that people can access top quality health care close to home in their local community. This is more convenient for the patient and takes pressure off our hospitals. “Minister Harris has said he wants to deliver primary care in every community in Ireland,

a goal I fully support. “With the economic recovery continuing apace, Fine Gael is determined to use the resulting economic resources to deliver better services to create the kind of fair and just society that will improve the lives of everyone. “I will work closely with Minister Harris to ensure this new primary care centre for Wexford is delivered in a timely fashion and in a way that best serves local people.” The European Investment Bank is joined in this enterprise by Bank of Tokyo, Mitsubishi UFG (BTMU) and Talanx, a German based insurance company, who are providing the balance of funding required. n

Tech Tip
Is It Infected?
How to tell If your computer Has a vIrus Picture this: you start your computer and wait. and wait. and wait some more. When your desktop finally shows its face, things don’t get any better. your internet is sluggish, your programs are taking forever to load, and your cursor is dragging 20 seconds behind your mouse. you might have tried to open too many programs at once. or… you might be infected. Sometimes a malware infection is plain as day. Other times it’s a silent killer. If you want to know whether or not your machine is sick, you first need to understand the symptoms. So let’s take a look at the telltale signs.

you’ve got ransomware This one’s the most obvious. Ransomware authors want to make it perfectly clear that you have a malware infection—that’s how they make their money. If you’ve got ransomware, you’ll get a pop-up that tells you your files have been encrypted and there’s a deadline to pay a ransom in order to get them back. Browser redirects You click on a link after doing a Google search. The link opens to a different page. You head back to your search results and try a different link. Same thing happens. Over and over you’re redirected to a different site from the one you’re trying to reach. That, my friend, is a malware infection. Different home page Say you set your home page to be your favorite sports news site. But for some reason, Yahoo.com keeps coming up. You also notice some new toolbars (rows of selectable icons) below your browser window that you can’t get rid of. You could either have a major case of the forgets, or, more likely, you’ve got an infection. anoTHER BlaTanT Sign oF inFEcTion: Bombarded with pop-ups We’re talking: can’t escape. Close one, another one opens. Or you’re not even online, and you’re getting pop-up messages on your system. Some sites admittedly have terrible ad experiences that feel like something nefarious is going on (but really isn’t). Most of the time, if your screen is loaded with pop-ups, you’re looking at an adware or spyware infection. lESS oBviouS SignS oF inFEcTion: computer running slow Lots of things can contribute to a slow computer. You could be running too many programs at once, you may be running out of hard drive space, or there’s not enough free memory. If none of those are true for you and your computer is still slow, it’s possible you’re infected. new, unfamiliar icons on desktop Maybe your nephew Timmy jumped on without your knowledge and downloaded a photo editing program so he could swap his face with his dog’s face and share it on social media. Or perhaps you downloaded a legitimate piece of software and a Potentially Unwanted Program (PUP) hitched a ride. If it’s the latter, your computer could be weighed
down by PUPs, which Malwarebytes and many other security companies consider malware. constant crashing There are a couple reasons why your applications or system might crash, including potential incompatibility between programs or software and hardware that needs updating. However, some forms of malware, such as rootkits, dig deep into the Windows kernel and latch on, creating instability. Web browser freezes or is unresponsive Slow Internet could be just that—check your wifi signal or your download speeds with your Internet provider to be sure. But if everything checks out and your browser grinds to a halt, it could be a sign of infection. anoTHER lESS oBviouS Sign oF inFEcTion lots of bounced email We’ve all mistakenly typed in the wrong email address and hit “send.” But if you’re getting a suspiciously high number of bounces, or emails that return to your inbox undelivered, something else is going on. First, your email address could have been hacked and is now being used to spam the crap out of your contacts list. Or malware could be the culprit. How? An infected computer sends out emails using the addresses it found in your computer. If the “To” address doesn’t work, the message bounces back to the “From” address, which is often yours.
MoBilE inFEcTionS: Battery life drains quickly Oh yes, your cell phone is not immune to malware. If you notice your battery life draining quickly, it could be that you’ve got some hefty programs open, such as games or music streaming services. It could also be that your battery is on its last leg. Unfortunately, the third possibility is mobile malware. unusually large bill This one’s pretty clear-cut. Pay close attention to your cell phone bill. Are you being charged for messages you didn’t send? Is your data plan getting busted? Are you getting texts from your provider saying you owe money for something you didn’t purchase? Mobile malware is to blame. MURPHY’S LIQUIDATION FURNITURE Now Open in Wexford
going from strength to strength and responding to a huge demand for their products, Murphy’s liquidation Furniture has opened its fifth shop at unit 2, clonard Retail Park, Killeen, Wexford (beside DiD Electrical and Ken Blacks). This family-run business brings in container loads of liquidated stock which provides exceptional value and a fantastic choice of all types of new furniture at highly discounted prices. With discounts ranging from 50 -80 % off high street prices on mattresses, beds, occasional furniture, suites of furniture etc it’s no wonder so many people are making their way to Clonard Retail Park to visit the new shop. Anthony, one of the company directors, told us, ‘We buy the stock at a reduced price and simply pass on the savings to our customers.’ Each item is marked so that you can see the original recommended retail price and (in most cases) hundreds of euros worth of savings. This family-run company has grown at an unbelievable rate over the past few years with many people travelling from all parts of Ireland to avail of the amazing prices. When the Slaney News visited the shop in Clonard Retail Park prior to its opening, we asked Anthony about their business success to date. Anthony told us that there is such demand for their products they can’t but spread the savings to other locations so as many people as possible can avail of the amazing prices. So that’s exactly what they’ve been doing with shops in Gorey,
Tallaght, Naas, Carlow and now in Clonard Retail Park, Wexford (beside DID Electrical and Ken Blacks). Anthony said, ‘This is not just a store with seasonal bargains, it’s all year round and it has a wide range that can’t be beaten on price.’ And when you buy at at Murphy’s Liquidation Furniture you buy the product off the floor so you don’t have to start assembling flat-pack furniture when you get home. And you don’t have to wait for a similar product to be ordered. You just take whatever it is you fancy the same day and bring it with you or have it delivered. Anthony also explained that there is a limited number of each item in stock, so turnover is huge and the furniture stock changes every week. He said it’s important to keep dropping into your nearest store to see what other savings you can make as container loads are arriving every week. So if you are interested in a bargain, and need some indoor or outdoor furniture, why not follow the crowds and visit Murphy’s Liquidation Furniture at Clonard Retail Park soon. n

jamie and emma An Offer YOu CAn’t refuse Webster’s Dictionary defines the word perfect as, “having no mistakes or flaws”. For many, many reasons and then some I genuinely feel that The Godfather Part II is nigh on a perfect film. But Jamie, I hear you cry, this has been said many times and many ways, indeed by people a lot more well-versed than you. Why should we buy into that? Well if you will allow me to divulge, dear reader, I will expand and put forward my reasoning. For the purposes of the piece, I will be touching on The Godfather Part I and the much maligned (rather unfairly I feel) The Godfather Part III. A great actor can take material and mine diamonds out of an already pretty solid story and script. The Godfather Part I features a performance by a young, hungry and completely flawless Al Pacino as the Corleone golden child, Michael. The one that Don Vito (an outstanding Marlon Brando) wanted to be out of the “fam-
ily business”. He fought in Vietnam, settled down with a nice girl, Kay (Diane Keaton, on spectacular form), comes home to see his sister Connie (Talia Shire) marry her wayward fiancée. Vito is ecstatic to have his boy home. (***SPOILER ALERT***)… Circumstances surrounding an attempt on Vito’s life prompts action from the family, initially and predictably from family hothead Santino (a brilliant James Caan, who originally read for Michael). But the final and deciding is dealt by Michael when he coldly shoots the crooked cop who broke his jaw, McCluskey (Sterling Hayden) and noted heroin dealer Virgil “The Turk” Solozzo (Al Lettieri) in an unassuming public restaurant. In this one scene, Michael has chosen his path and is now deeply involved in the “family business”. This signifies the start of his arc from blue eyed war hero to cold eyed Mafia don. The first film ends with the door being shut

talk movies
physically and metaphorically on his long-suffering wife Kay as the soldiers kiss his hand and call him, “Godfather”. The second movie opens with Michael in full control as Godfather of the Corleone family. And they want to move to Vegas, more importantly to Nevada to get a wedge of the goldmine that is Vegas. There is so much to love in this movie, the Senator ’s disdain of “Michael… and his kind”. Words he slowly regrets when Michael’s “kind” help him dispose of a hooker who dies by the Senator’s hands. The slow, horrible deterioration of Michael’s marriage to Kay, which results in a tough decision by Kay. Tom Hagen (trusted family consiglieri) being removed from power as he is not a “wartime consiglieri”. There is so much more happening in this movie, but the area that elevates it to near perfect status are the scenes which serve as a back story for Vito (played by Robert De Niro)
and a wistful Michael thinking about his now dead father and mother and the legacy he inherited. These scenes play out in Sicily and show Vito rise from humble shop owner to renowned and indeed feared Godfather. They look amazing and if you think about it, you are watching Robert De Niro playing a young Marlon Brando, who is Al Pacino’s father. Mind…. Blown!!!! Part III has some decent scenes, apart from Sofia Coppolla and it has Pacino literally chewing the scenery. It is unfairly maligned but I enjoy it still. It serves a purpose and it wraps up the trilogy as best it could. Leave it alone!! Back to Part II. You have Pacino and Keaton tearing up the screen, a story sprawling decades and some of the nicest looking scenery you will ever see lest you travel to Sicily itself. Do yourself a favour, take the disc off the shelf, fire up the player and sit back to be enthralled by a film that has no mistakes or flaws… – Jamie Murphy
While Jamie this time around has gone with a timeless piece of cinema gold, I've taken a slightly different road, with what I think is a timeless (albeit in very different ways, and maybe only to me) piece of cinema that perfectly embodies all that is the 1990s (shout out to Clueless for this also, one of the best 90s movies and another one I will never get sick of watching). While 10 Things I Hate About You will never win any awards or ever be hailed as a cinematic masterpiece, it's absolutely rewatchable just because it's entertaining, it's intelligent and the jokes still make me laugh every time I watch it. I am an unashamed lover of rom-coms, and ever since I saw it when it was released in 1999, 10 Things I Hate About You is a movie I go back to again and
again. If I'm ever feeling shitty, this is the movie that I always go for, and yes, I can pretty much quote the entire film. Like, every line. Based on Shakespeare's play The Taming of the Shrew, the movie perfectly balances both humour and sharp wit to present a film that, while no means having the most original storyline ever, has real heart and a draw-in factor that keeps you entertained for all 97 minutes of it. This was Heath Ledger's first American film, and he cemented a place in my heart forever through his portrayal of Patrick Verona, the bad boy who gets paid to take out a girl, and only to show us that he's not really that bad at all. My favourite scene in this movie will forever be Patrick Verona singing 'Can't Take My Eyes Off You'
on the bleachers to Julia Stiles character Kat, in an attempt to earn her forgiveness for being an ass. Definitely one of my favourite scenes EVER. Kat Stratford was my first proper introduction to feminism, and her strong opinions and take-no-crap attitude were very inspiring in a genre that wasn't known to have the best female role-models. Kat's utter adherence to her beliefs and her high level of intelligence make her a very strong character, who earns the respect of the viewer almost immediately. As I have limited space, I cannot rave about how much I love Joseph Gordon Levitt, Larry Miller and David Krumholtz (such a good job as the supporting character best friend), but they were also some of my favourite parts of this
movie. Larry Miller as Kat and Bianca's overprotective father is brilliant and hilarious, and JGL plays a very good boy in love with a girl. The wit in this movie, and the contrast between the vacuous characters and the intelligent, strong-willed ones is part of what makes this movie so memorable. The characters are wonderful, from the very droll school counsellor (played by the estimable Allison Janney) writing her erotic novel, to the sweet Cameron (Joseph Gordon Levitt), who just wants the pretty girl to fall in love with him, and while the story is a simple redemption story (for a number of characters), it's sharp wit and playfulness are two of the reasons this is such a memorable film for me. – Emma Morris

Enniscorthy Musical Society received a nomination for its costumes and make-up for its recent production of Seussical the Musical. Joan Fogarty was the costume co-ordinator. It’s the 1960s and the narrow horizons and limited possibilities of Ballybeg have forced Gar O’Donnell – embodied by the dual personae of Gar Public and Gar Private – to consider emigration. Friel explores the cultural, social and political issues of the 1960s and their impact on the play’s characters. The themes of love, shattered dreams, authority and the nature of language emerge as the action moves from reality to memory to fantasy. –––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––– Plus lots of workshops, classes, and childen’s activities and summer camps – see www.wexfordartscentre.ie for details. ––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––

Congratulations to two stalwarts of Enniscorthy’s theatre scene, Michael Dunbar and Andy Doyle, the duo behind scalder theatre Company which recently premiered Billy Roche’s new play “Of Mornington” in the Jerome Hynes Theatre in the National Opera House, Wexford. Michael was in the director’s chair with Andy threading the boards with Jack Matthews and Gayle Jordan. The play is a bittersweet story of loves lost, dreams shattered, where characters cling to the promise of a redemptive future. Originally scheduled for a 6-night run (23-28 May) such was the positive reaction to the play that an additional three nights had to be added (9-11 June).
Hot on the heels of their recent success with Paul O’Reilly’s A Night on the Hill Enniscorthy Drama Group are certainly not resting on their laurels as they take to the boards yet again with the hilarious new comedy by Padraic McIntyre – The Lost Weekend. INVENTIVE SECOND ALBUM FROM WEXFORD SINGER-SONGWRITER Ballycogley-based singersongwriter, Ian Barry, for many years a stalwart of the Wexford Song Club, has released his second album The Adventures of Angel, Slash and Gunga Din on his own label. The official launch took place at Bean and Berry, Wexford Town, on June 2 as part of the venue’s regular Quayside Sessions. The Adventures of Angel, Slash and Gunga Din is the follow-up to Ian Barry’s debut album Skinstown, and comprises ten tracks composed by Barry. It was produced by Barry himself in tandem with noted local guitarist and producer Michael Egan in Egan’s studio in Piercestown. The title The Adventures of Angel, Slash and Gunga Din refers to Ian’s wife Marion and two sons Aidan and Pierce who had front row seats while he wrote and did the preparatory recordings of the songs
in the front room of their home in South Wexford. Barry compares the writing and recording processes to journeys that can often lead into unexpected places. For example, he confesses that the title track was
originally a song he worked at for over a decade until he discovered it worked best as an instrumental! Throughout The Adventures of Angel, Slash and Gunga Din the sophisticated production uses modern layering techniques and string samples that embellish Barry’s songs without ever over-shadowing their musical and lyrical integrity. The CD also features musical contributions from noted musicians and singers of the calibre of Trish Gallagher (whistle and vocals), Louise Malone (saxophone and vocals), Derek Black (drums), Seamus O’Sullivan (piano), Cat Black (vocals) and Richard King (steel guitar). The unique album cover was designed by the late Paddy Kehoe, with photography by Marion Barry. Ian Barry can be contacted on 086-390 0863 or email at: ianbarry@eircom.net n

Stunning photographic exhibition A stunning Exhibition of photographs of “Redcoats and Rebels” was recently launched at the 1798 Centre by Councillor Keith Doyle. The work of talented photographer Ken Hayes the exhibition is a collection of photographs of the Battle of Vinegar Hill taken over the past three years. Many of the photographs on display are portraits of Rebel and Redcoat in the heat of battle and are full of emotion and passion. The images are powerful, graphic and striking and extremely well taken by a photographer with an eye for beauty in the unusual. Enniscorthy re-enactors were delighted to be part of the launch and enjoyed seeing themselves and many of their comrades in arms, both

by World renowned photographer tommie lehane is on display in bunclody library, 1st -31st June 2016. Tommie Lehane is a world-renowned, Dublin-based photographer whose practice is mainly based on a multifaceted approach to the idea of Place. An Imperfect Normality is a retrospective on a Syria that was. Like dozens and more periods throughout Syria’s long history, this period is now consigned forever to the history books. Now ravaged by war and chaos, it is hard to imagine a place that, to those who lived on its territory or crossed its borders, was a relatively normal place to be. The work seeks to document a normality whilst hinting at its imperfections and considering the usefulness of war as a method of change. A change, that may well in the end replace An Imperfect Normality with another, albeit different, Imperfect Normality.

Wexford Food snippets… Strawberry Gin The last weekend in May saw the launch of Wexford Strawberry Gin at the Wexford Food Festival. The producers, Blackwater Distillery in Cappoquin, say that “taste, not marketing, lies at the heart of Wexford Strawberry Gin”. Each and every strawberry used is grown in Wexford by Susan Kearns, they are frozen, shipped to the gin producers and macerated in alcohol for 48 hours to fully extract their flavour. The berries are then minced and the whole lot added to the still. After distillation they add even more strawberries to the gin, along with some blackcurrants; which gives the Wexford Strawberry Gin its wonderful nose and rose tint. For more information: Blackwater Distillery, Unit 3 Cappoquin Enterprise Park, Cappoquin, Co. Waterford. Phone: (058) 52621. Email: hello@blackwaterdistillery.ie n

“I refuse to be shamed into silence”- Emma Morris The lack of attendance in the Dáil at the end of April for the mental health debate feels like a slap in the face to those of us suffering mental health problems. The fact that our own politicians didn't care enough to show up for a debate that affects a huge percentage of Irish people shows just how out of touch this government really is. The thousands of tweets that went up at the end of that April night under #IamAReason show just how prevalent an issue it is on this small island of ours, and just how let down people feel. Thousands of people suffer with their mental health, and in a country where we are told that 7% of young people aged 17-25 have attempted suicide, this lack of respect is totally unacceptable from those responsible for policy making and funding in our mental health sector. While the number of attending TDs at the Dáil wasn't as dismal as it was widely reported to be, there was still well over half of the government who didn't show up for the debate. Ten people commit suicide per
week in this country, and each year there are 11,000 cases of selfharm admitted to A&E services. Our government needs to wise up about the issues that are really affecting people in their daily life, and show that they are listening to what we have to say. A report from the Children’s Rights Alliance found that we had the highest rate of female youth suicides and the second highest rate of male youth suicides in the EU between 2009 and 2011. These statistics are extremely worrying, yet looking at the mostly empty Dáil chamber, it seems that our politicians lack perspective on what that really means. It means that the people of Ireland need help, and they're not getting it. The services are widely unavailable, and that makes a lot of people unwilling to actively look for help. Cutting funding and removing services isn't beneficial in a country where 1 in 4 people experience issues with mental health in their lifetime. As someone from Wexford, which had the highest rate of suicide in the country in 2015, to learn that only one local TD
Emma Morris
showed up for the mental health debate is utterly baffling. Both the suicide and self-harm rates in Wexford are higher than the national average, and not one of the TDs from the major parties showed their face at the 3hour-long debate. They constantly talk about how important mental health services are, but when it matters it seems that they are not there. Our politicians are paid to decide what is best for us, both in individual counties and in the country as a whole, but how is that possible if they refuse to pay
attention to what is affecting us most as a nation? Wexford's mental health system is a bleak one. With no dedicated 24 hour psychiatric service in the county after St. Senan's Hospital was shut down in 2013, the people who suffer after hours or at the weekends have no choice but to present t h e m s e l v e s a t We x f o r d Hospital's A&E, where there isn't really any help for them. Those who are lucky enough to be seen are then referred to University Hospital Waterford, where they may have to wait to be seen in the A&E again and there is no guarantee of a bed for them in the unit. Even recently it was reported that a young man from Wexford who was admitted to Waterford Hospital, then put on suicide watch in the acute ward, still managed to take his own life. We have to ask, how do things like this happen in what is supposed to be one of the best mental health facilities in the country? How is possible for this to happen at all? For those of us who are still coming to terms with our mental illnesses, seeing the blatant
disregard for the mental health services among those who are supposed to be leading our country is harmful. We're still afraid to talk about what we're going through, and this just increases the perceived stigma that we see surrounding mental health. A survey from St. Patrick's University Hospital proves that even today there is still a massive stigma towards mental health. 67% of those surveyed agreed that Irish people view being treated for a mental health difficulty as a personal failure, while a mere 21% believe that Irish employers would be comfortable employing someone with mental health issues. This is utterly bewildering, and extremely worrisome for those of us who are suffering and currently unemployed. People are angry. The lack of solidarity from our government officials shows us that they aren't paying attention to the major issues. Ireland has the fourth highest suicide rate in the EU, suicide is the leading cause of death among young people in the country, and yet here we are, politicians not car-
ing enough to show up for the debate, and €12 million being diverted from the budget for mental health to 'more politically sensitive areas'. As proved in the debate at the end of April, our politicians are being wilfully negligent when it comes to the mental health sector, and they are only increasing the stigma surrounding mental health in this country. Though we're trying, the sense of shame that surrounds those of us suffering with our mental health is hard to fight off. While it is slowly becoming less stigmatised, there is still that sense of judgement, and 'ah, sure won't it be grand, just have a cup of tea and go out for a walk there, you'll be grand in the morning.' And that is part of the attitude that makes people who suffer with their mental health afraid to come forward and talk about it, why people feel ashamed because of it, and part of the reason why it takes years for people to finally admit that they are having problems. Well I suffer from mental health issues, and I refuse to be shamed into silence anymore. n

High Court quashes vulture fund veto Kerry O'Neill, Personal Insolvency Practitoner at R Hendy & Co, has had a successful appeal against a veto on a PIA made by a Private Equity fund in the High Court. This is the first appeal made in the High Court under section 115 of the Personal Insolvency (Amendment) Act 2015. In the first ever Section 115A appeal to come before the High Court, Ms Justice Baker approved the application by R Hendy & Co which sought to overturn the rejection of a PIA proposal by Pepper as agent for Pentire Property Finance Limited. The appeal was taken by Kerry O’Neill of R Hendy & Co on behalf of the debtor and represented by Alan McGee and Keith Farry BL Eric Hendy of R Hendy & Co and chairman of APIP, The Association of Personal Insolvency Practitioners, said the ruling “is a great result. It shows that the Personal Insolvency mechanism works.” Mr Hendy described the
Kerry O’Neill Personal Insolvency Act as “the only protection for citizens of the state against Vulture Funds”. In her judgement Ms Justice Baker commented that: ● The Personal Insolvency Act 2015 was a unique piece of legislation designed by the Oireachtas with the intent to limit the veto of creditors in order to retain a family in their PPR where the mortgage is sustainable. ● Pentire Property Finance Limited was an investment fund. ● Decided that the Family
Home Secured creditor was a distinct and separate class of creditor. ● Decided that the amount outstanding on the mortgage was sufficient in this case to satisfy the proportionality requirement. ● Approved the service of the Notices on Creditors who were financial institutions/investment funds by e-mail and individual creditors by registered post. ● Accepted that the individual proofs required to be satisfied under Section 115A were in order. ● Made an order for costs to be a cost of the arrangement. The decision of Ms Justice Baker has now established that the Family Home Secured Creditor is a distinct and separate class of creditor. If you have any queries in relation to personal insolvency please do not hesitate to contact Kerry O’Neill at 0402 29376 or kerry@rhendy.ie n
LOCAL COMPANY REACHES NATIONAL ENTERPRISE FINAL The Minister for Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation, Mary Mitchell O’Connor TD, recently commended the Irish small businesses that reached the National Enterprise Aw a r d s F i n a l . T h e C o . Wexford representative was Hentech Fabrication Ltd – a local company from Ballymurn, Enniscorthy. Thousands of small businesses from across the country were supported by Local Enterprise Offices in the Local Authorities Network last year and 32 of those businesses reached the National Final. The nominee from Wexford County Council’s Local Enterprise Office was Hentech Fabrication Ltd, a family run company from Ballymurn, which engages in steel fabrication, employing 18 full-time staff. In March 2016 Hentech was selected by Wexford
John Hennessy of Hentech
County Council’s Local Enterprise Office as the winner of the County Enterprise Awards, and nominated to go forward to represent Wexford at the National Finals held at the Aviva Stadium on 9th June. The competition has a prize fund of €40,000 and was set up to celebrate Ireland’s small businesses and
micro-enterprises. Twelve awards were presented on the night including eight new regional trophies and the overall winner received €10,000 to invest in their business – unfortunately it was not Hentech on this occasion. Head of Enterprise at Wexford County Council Tom Banville paid tribute to Wexford’s small business community, saying: “Small businesses such as Hentech Fabrication are becoming the heroes of the economic recovery locally and we want to celebrate their successes and talents. The Local Enterprise Offices, through the Local Authorities Network, support thousands of small businesses in the community every year and the National Enterprise Awards are a fitting way to recognise their remarkable achievements.” n
10 signs of Green Shoots? Despite the recent closure of a long-established family business, Enniscorthy could at last be seeing some “green shoots” if we were to look at all the following … 1. The old Sheehans premises on Rafter Street is undergoing major repair. Could its Chinese owner be opening a retail business here in the near future? 2. The Antique Tavern is seeking planning permission for a major extension into an adjoining premises. When was the last time we saw any pub expanding? 3. Peugeot main dealer, Doyle’s of Courtown, has purchased the old O’Leary’s car premises on the Old Dublin Road. When car dealers are investing that is usually an indication of greater disposable income. 4. Planning permission has been granted in relation to the
Daybreak retail development at Drumgoold. The owners are seeking to construct an off-licence area within the existing shop unit to sell wines, beers and spirits; and permission for change of use of existing offices and storerooms to use as takeaway unit with modifications to side facade of existing building; to change an existing window to a door and window system, and permission for associated signage for the takeaway; and permission to change the canopy of the existing forecourt service station, etc. 5. A site at Clonhaston of c. 40 acres just 1.5km from Enniscorthy town has been sold at auction. With full planning for 150 residential units, plus creche and retail units on just 14 acres, the site could potentially hold over 400 residential units! Guiding at €800,000 a sale was agreed Repair work at the old Sheehan’s shop Rafter Street, May 2016.
after being withdrawn at €730,000, after 20 bids starting at €550K. A Co. Wexford based developer is the new owner. 6. There are several wind-farm applications for the Enniscorthy area going through the planning process at present. 7. Preparatory work on the Enniscorthy Flood Defence scheme has commenced. 8. The Enniscorthy By-pass construction has commenced. The bypass was a factor in the successful sale of the Clonhaston site (above) as it will be just 2km from the new motorway. 9. The passive house development by Michael Bennett at Madeira Oaks has got off to a good start with three sold as at 13th June, all to local buyers. With many 3bed semis in Enniscorthy selling for around the €120,000 mark these new passive houses are selling at a premium of 50% above that price which is a good sign that the property market in town is in recovery mode. 10. Several new businesses have opened their doors in recent weeks: A new flower shop on Slaney Street (John McGrath), League Barber on the Old Dublin Road (Sebastian), an engraving shop at the top of Slaney Street (Diarmuid Heffernan), the Fast Food Cottage takeaway at Templeshannon (Hammad). Best of luck to all these entrepreneurs. n

A vision for tourism in Co. Wexford Visit Wexford Tourism hosted a tourism networking and information day on Monday, May 30th, at the Riverside Park Hotel, for the tourism industry and all of those interested in growing tourism in Wexford. Chair of Visit Wexford, Colm Neville of the Riverside Park Hotel, invited everyone in the room to engage and work with Visit Wexford and to get in touch via hello@visitwexford.ie. “We are working hard to collaborate and promote Wexford and to cross-sell all that we have to offer. We want to highlight all that is good and all that there is to do in Wexford and we are inviting all of you involved in tourism or interested in growing tourism in Wexford to come on board and join us in this mission.” Colm outlined the details of the 2016 marketing campaign planned to raise the Wexford profile further this year. Visit Wexford
will roll out a national television campaign early this summer promoting Wexford as ‘the’ place to visit. The thirty-second TV advert was hugely successful in its airing and reach numbers during 2015, promoting Wexford as a number one choice for a holiday in Ireland. Two new publications produced for the county by Visit Wexford promoting details of the festivals taking place during 2016 and also detailing the Wexford offering under Ireland’s Ancient East and more were unveiled. These guides have been distrubuted at the Glance Promotional stands in Dublin Airport, Rosslare Port, Waterford Airport along with stands across the entire Southeast region and across Dublin. A number of national radio competitions will also take place along with a multi-site billboard campaign at high traffic areas in Dublin plus a new Visit
Wexford welcome billboard at Rosslare Port. Wexford will also feature extensively on the TV3 national events guide. A focus is also placed on digital marketing, building on the users visiting the website www.visitwexford.ie. An extensive campaign is being rolled out on donedeal.ie with a reach of over 400,000 people per day it is one of the most used websites in the country. The number of visitors to VisitWexford.ie has increased by 20% over the last 12 months and plans are to grow this further. Visit Wexford also outlined details of a campaign to the value of €165,000 which was rolled out in conjunction with Tourism Ireland, Rosslare EuroPort and Irish Ferries which saw Wexford promoted to markets of over 9 million people in the UK. Tourism Officer, Siobhan O’Neill said, “Wexford tourism is booming in the domestic mar-
ket, Wexford is leading the way in the Southeast region and is currently the county attracting the highest number of domestic visitors. Wexford has room to grow in terms of attracting more international visitors and it is thought Ireland’s Ancient East is the ideal tourism product, which will enable Wexford to attract more international visitors.” Orla Woods of Failte Ireland presented the ambitious plans of Failte Ireland and how Ireland’s Ancient East is being received by the domestic and the international tourism markets. She said Ireland’s Ancient East is the compelling proposition which will motivate international visitors to come to this region in particular, “It is what we will use to convert Ireland’s Ancient East from a transit zone to a tourist zone… We are investing €18 million in promoting Ireland’s Ancient East during 2016.” n

Co. Wexford Live Register down 30% C o u n t y We x f o r d ’s L i v e Register is down 29.62% since the launch of the Action Plan for Jobs in 2012, according to Fine Gael TD for Wexford, Minister Paul Kehoe TD. Minister Kehoe says that a drop of 5,778 in the Live Register in County Wexford since the launch of the Action Plan for Jobs in early 2012, is a strong indication that Fine Gael is continuing to deliver on its pledge to prioritise job creation and reduce unemployment. “The annual decline in the Live Register from May 2015 to May 2016, in County Wexford, was 11.67%, while the drop since the launch of the Action Plan for Jobs in February 2012 was 29.62% “This is very positive news and proof yet again of Fine Gael’s commitment and success in creating the environment to get people in County Wexford back to work. “Unemployment has decreased in every region of the country in the last 12 months. 155,000 new jobs have been created since the Action Plan
for Jobs was launched in early 2012 and the Programme for Government has reaffirmed the Action Plan for Jobs as the best way to implement ideas on job creation across Government. With 15,400 new jobs created in the first three months of 2016 we are off to a great start in meeting Fine Gael’s target of 200,000 new jobs by 2020. “Each new job created in County Wexford is another family looking forward to a brighter future and each new job created by a business is a sign of returning confidence and growth. In fact each new job created here in County Wexford leads to more resources which Fine Gael is committed to using to fix the many challenges we face as a society. “Fine Gael in Government continues to prioritise job creation because we believe that only a strong economy, supporting people at work, can pay for the services needed to create a fair society here in County Wexford and around the country.”n

VET DIARY FOR JULY with the Moyne Veterinary Clinic
This month Joe Kavanagh looks at pet allergies. It's summer time, exams are almost done, school’s out and people are getting in the holiday mode. Happy Days!!! It gives us a pep in our step, the long days, sunshine and warmth.... well we'll keep hoping for that! With the warmth comes its own challenges. Some dogs are prone to allergies and these can vary from flea bite allergies to more insidious ones like pollen or dust mites. For each it's an overload of histamine release and there are various ways to combat it depending on the type of allergy. Working on the underlying problem is usually the best approach, going with the old adage "prevention is better than cure".
Cathy Keane of Heritage Bus Tours and Enniscorthy Historic & Re-enactment Society are certainly doing their bit for tourism in the town. Over the June Bank Holiday weekend the re-enactment group participated in re-enactments in Kilcoole over a 2-day 1916 Programme of Events and on Bank Holiday Monday they travelled to Clonmel where they were part of the 1916 Parade and the unveiling of a monument to the 43 Clonmel Volunteers, bringing Enniscorthy with them wherever they visit and establishing contacts and connections everywhere. On Saturday 11th June they travelled out to Monageer to be part of the unveiling of the 1916 Monument and the Proclamation Stone and were delighted to meet the grandson of James Connolly - James Pearse - who read the Proclamation signed by his grandfather to the large crowd who gathered in the village for the wonderful event. Monageer pulled out all the stops with many locals dressing in 1916 period costume and indeed the PIc: Cathy Keane
This can be in the form of profilactic treatment for fleas either with tablets, the vial on their skin or the traditional washes. Each method has its own merits but you'll usually get longer action from the oral administration or application of the vials onto the skin. These can work for fleas but also for ticks which is beginning to become more prevalent and ticks run the risk of carrying other infections too. The temptation, if you see a tick on your pet, is to just go and pull it off but this is not advisable as you leave part of them attached which causes problems in its own right. To find the treatment that best suits you and your pet drop in as we have special offers on them at the moment to ease the burden on you and your pet. Happy Holidays. n

Minister of State at the Department of Defence pulled out all the stops as well to have the armoured car, Slieve na mBan, brought in specially for the occasion. It was a marvellous evening with entertainment from Paul O`Reilly who sang his 1916 Song Project contribution ‘The Rise of the Wexford Volunteers’, Padraig Sinnott who played a lament on the uilleann pipes and the Kehoe twins, grandsons of the late Christy Kehoe, who delighted the crowd with a rousing rendition of The Foggy Dew. On Sunday, the re-enactment group staged a small 1798 reenactment on Vinegar Hill for a group of students and their professors from Savannah who were bused to the hill by Cathy Keane as part of her town tour. The Savannah group are here researching their Wexford connections. 20% of the population of Savannah, Georgia, are of Irish extraction and of that 20% – 68% of them are of Wexford extraction. The students were suitably impressed with the re-enactors and spent time talking to them about the history of 1798 and

An invitation was extended to the re-enactors to be part of the St. Patrick’s Day Parade in Savannah which is the second largest parade in the United States. Now wouldn’t that go a long way to cementing the Wex/Sav Connection and promoting Enniscorthy and Wexford as a major tourist attraction for the future. Well done to Cathy Keane for organising the tour and the re-enactment and well done to Enniscorthy Historic & Re-enactment Society who are always willing and available to promote the town, the county and its history. – Maria Nolan

On the education front… ENVIRONMENTALISTS IN LOCAL SCHOOLS Minister Kehoe has congratulated students of FCJ Bunclody and St Colman’s National School, Ballindaggin for their participation in the Young Environmentalist Awards 2016. The event represents Ireland’s largest celebration of Youth ECO-Action which promotes conservation and recognises the contribution of young people to the environment. In congratulating the students on being chosen as finalists in the event, Minister Kehoe praised; ‘The ability of the students from both schools to identity the importance of recycling and water conservation, as key actions which can have a real and lasting positive impact in responding to the challenges of climate change. “I want to wish them well and encourage them together with their teachers, to continue their interest in conservation and protection of the environment.”
TECHNOLOGICAL UNIVERSITY FOR THE SOUTH EAST Minister Paul Kehoe has stated that the establishment of a Technological University for the South East remains a key ambition for this current Government and that he will work closely with all stakeholders to ensure that this ambition is realised. “In Government we believe the South East has the potential for huge economic growth and even greater job creation. A strong technological university in the South East will help support these plans and we need to push forward with this now.” FUNDING FOR WORKS IN LOCAL SCHOOLS Minister Paul Kehoe has welcomed the recent announcement by Minister for Education and Skills, Richard Bruton TD, that eight local schools are to receive funding for additional accom-

A local contributor looks at life today in Enniscorthy and beyond defeat by putting forward legislation and the opposition will block anything which suits their political agenda. We are in a sad situation rather than an era of new politics which we were promised.

View from the Hill the New GoverNMeNt The General Election took place on the 26th of February last. That’s a full four months ago. Since then the Dail has been a political institution crippled by political inaction. The main reason for this is that the government is in a minority position and is unable to have any legislation passed. The promises, after the formation of the government, that now we have a new dispensation legislation would be agreed by consensus, are not coming to pass. We have seen a few opportunist motions approved by the Dail but this was more about scoring political points than achieving anything concrete. No one in the Dail, since the
election, has instigated any piece of legislation which might be of value to the country. Many issues are crying out for attention but from the looks of things it will be some time before any kind of programme will be put in place. Realistically we are now looking at September before any system to get government-promoted bills through the Dail will be put in place. Even then problems will arise as the emphasis at that point will be on the budget which is due in October and the Finance Bill which will have to be approved immediately after that. It appears that we are in for a long period of inaction as the government is not prepared to risk
NewsPaPers We all know that the newspaper industry is going through a difficult period. Social media, 24 hour news coverage available on smartphones computers etc, all have an effect. However, it’s great to see that our Taoiseach is doing his utmost to singlehandedly keep the industry alive. In the past year his department, using our money, has spent €72,000 on the purchase of newspapers for the great man to read. How in the name of (I’ll leave the next word to your imagination) could anyone spend €72,000 in a year on newspapers. Ah! Who cares anyway, it’s only taxpayers’ money. BreNdaN howliN Congratulations to Wexford T.D. Brendan Howlin on being elected Leader of the Labour Party. He is the second Wexford man to lead the oldest party in the State. The late Brendan Corish led the same party with great distinction from 1960 to 1977. Let’s hope that the second Brendan, who inciden-
tally was called after Brendan Corish, who was a personal and political friend of his late father, will fill the role with the same dignity and dedication. We wish him luck in his new role. aPPeal to farMers This country would not survive without our farmers. They work hard in sometimes difficult conditions, due to bad weather etc., and indeed some have a lonely enough existence spent on their farms for long hours at a time. One crib I have with our agricultural friends is their total lack of consideration to road users when they emerge with their heavy, slow-moving vehicles onto the public road. Most of them, not all I emphasise, totally ignore the fact that large numbers of cars, delivery vehicles, buses and anything you can think of are building up behind them. It wouldn’t take a minute for them to pull in now and again to free up the traffic logjam. In other words think of the other people on the road. irish soCCer faNs The Irish soccer fans abroad at the moment are a credit to this country. Unlike a large percentage of the followers of the English team, who quite frankly are criminals and thugs, our lads and girls
have not put a foot astray. Let’s hope that their trip is boosted by a good performance from the team against Italy tonight. irish Courts The Irish Judicial system never fails to amaze me. Our courts sometimes hand down bizarre sentences and this habit of sentencing some thug to a number of years imprisonment and then suspending up to a half of the sentence enthrals me. The inconsistency shown by the courts is another matter of grave concern. For instance, a pervert who rapes a down’s syndrome child gets 3 years and a guy who raped his two daughters gets 4 years. By the same token a Dublin man gets 3 years for claiming social welfare under a false name and a Wicklow man got 6 years for a vat fraud involving the importation of garlic. A woman in Cork got 2 years for social welfare fraud. While I’m not suggesting for one moment that any of the frauds were justified or to be condoned or should go without punishment, the message from the courts seems to be that financial fraud is treated more seriously by the state than the rape of a child. The fact is that our judges seem to live in another world and are apparently removed totally
from reality. Anyone who frequently visits the courts, particularly the higher courts, will see the bowing and scraping which goes on amongst the legal profession. It’s less of this and more everyday common sense we need in the courtroom. Murder of British M.P. The appalling murder of Labour M.P. Jo Cox in such a savage manner has shocked Ireland as well as Britain. Public Representatives, by their very nature, must be very accessible to the public at large. They are vulnerable to physical and constant verbal attack from every nut-case and dissenter out there. The one thing we must always remember is that all public representatives are elected by us as our representatives at both council and national level. It is their right to be treated with respect and be allowed to do their work free from threat and intimidation. By all means let us be vigorous in our criticism but remember at all times to ensure that our words do not encourage some unstable or evil person to take some drastic action which could result in harm or worse. n We are often asked: Who is the “View from the Hill” columnist? All we can say is that the author’s surname is NOT Doyle!

Bloom 2016 ran for five days over the June bank holiday weekend in the Phoenix Park, dublin, from thursday 2nd to Monday 6th. the show continues to grow each year and is now widely regarded as ireland’s largest garden, food and family festival, attracting over 100,000 visitors each year. There were lots of exhibitors hailing from Wexford this year, including Clolgue National School, Camolin, who created a postcard garden entitled ‘The Seasons.’ Postcard gardens are small gardens developed by amateur gardeners, clubs and schools nationwide and only a small selection are chosen to exhibit at Bloom each year. Clolgue National School’s ‘The Seasons’ has been designed and brought to life by the schoolchildren and principal Beth Higgins. This garden explores the magic of the four seasons as seen through the eyes of primary school children. Using recyclable materials, the pupils have made representations of plants and animals to show the magnificence of each season. I n M a y, RT E ’ s M a r t y

Blackwater Macra members Fiona McCabe and Mairead McCabe pictured with National Macra na Feirme Present Seán Finan at recent farm safety and wellbeing event.
Blackwater Branch of Macra na feirme took part recently in a first of its kind farm safety event to help highlight farm safety and mental wellbeing as part of Mental health awareness Month. This unique event covered a wide range of topics including the dangers of working on, living on, or visiting a farm; and child safety, fire safety, machinery safety, and general health and wellbeing. The event was held at John and Margaret Earles farm in Cullentra, Ballycanew, Gorey, where life-like demonstrations and replicas were on show to illustrate some of the key dangers on farms, including machinery and slurry safety. During the farm safety event Blackwater Macra helped highlight that by controlling the risks, identifying the hazards and putting con-
trol measures in place, there is the opportunity to reduce and eliminate risks. A wide range of organisations and individual speakers were also on hand throughout the event including the Health and Safety Authority, Embrace FARM, Teagasc, IFA, Grow, Samaritans and Aware. The event was well attended and was opened by Anna Marie McHugh from the NPA, GAA legend Tony Doran and George Graham. Everyone was asked to put their hand on the shoulder of the person next to them. Speaking at the event Tony Doran said, "We all need to take a little bit more time out and to have extra care around the farmyard." Macra na Feirme President Seán Finan, who also spoke at the event, told everyone that farm safety and mental wellbeing are not independent of each other and that in a time where farmers are under pres-
sure due to low incomes it becomes even more imperative to look after your mental health. Connecting with people around you is the key to maintaining your mental wellbeing and Macra na Feirme provides a great outlet for local communities. Macra however is not just for farmers but is open to the wider community to get involved. Macra provides a great social aspect with opportunities to travel and meet new people. Farmers can also benefit from a range of development opportunities and up-skilling programmes. With 22 national competitions, and a wide range of activities and events including sports, public speaking, farm skills, drama and Capers which is an annual variety show. caroline gets motoring volkswageN touraN review by Caroline Kidd it’s hard to beat an MPv for practical family transport. volkswagen currently has three in their line-up – the Golf sv, which is more of a mini MPv, and then the new touran and sharan. T h e n e w To u r a n w a s launched here at the beginning of the year and is a 5 + 2 – five full size seats and then two pull up seats in the boot for children or occasional use. Like most MPVs, the Touran isn’t sexy – more like a mini bus to ferry kids, but Volkswagen has had a go at making it more stylish. It’s that bit more chiselled compared to the old one and looks quite upmarket compared to rivals. This car has practicality at its core. It’s spacious and family-friendly on the inside with wide opening doors and cubby holes where you didn’t know cubby holes could exist. All Tourans for the Irish market come with the seven seats as standard, though remember leg room is tight in those extra two seats, so they are more suited to children. The extra seats fold neatly into the floor when not needed to reveal a large, square boot (743
Volkswagen Touran litres) that can be easily stacked to the roof. With the third row of seats in place, boot space is minimal at 137 litres, but there is still room for a few bags. Interior space has been improved thanks to a longer wheelbase and there is also a bit more headroom all round. It will please parents to know that there are three individual, fullsize seats in the second row and five Isofix fittings (second and third row). The second row
of seats can be slid forward and back individually to give those in the very back a bit more leg room. One of the most impressive features of the new Touran is the plushness of the interior. In terms of fit and finish, it’s a match for a premium rival. The driving is easy behind the wheel of the Touran – all the controls come easy to hand, the seats are comfy and supportive, and visibility is great all round. The
square shape of the car won’t make it the prettiest in the car park but it does make it easy to manoeuvre and park. On the road the Touran belies its size – it’s agile, grips willingly and the steering is really good so you can confidently get in and out of those corners with relative stability and minimal roll for something so big. It would be a bit far to say it’s fun to drive but driving this daily won’t be a drag. Above all
New Jaguar lauNched the Jaguar f-Pace is one of the most anticipated new cars of recent years. it’s the first suv Jaguar has ever built. the luxury suv segment is booming with the likes of Bentley and Maserati bringing out their own versions, so it was about time that Jaguar joined in. Jaguar Ireland is pitching the new F-Pace as the ‘practical sports car’ and the sporty BMW X4 and Porsche Macan are the core competitors. The F-Pace has a considerably lower entry price – 2.0-litre diesel rear wheel drive models with a manual gearbox start from €44,100, all wheel drive models from €47,800. Models with automatic gearbox or high performance V6 engines are pricier. Engine options include the 2.0-litre 180PS Ingenium diesel, 300PS 3.0-litre V6 diesel and 380PS 3.0-litre V6 petrol from the F-Type sports car. The 2.0-litre diesel will meet the needs of most buyers and on a short test drive it was quick, smooth and quiet. Mated to a manual transmission on RWD drive models,

by Caroline Kidd emissions are just 129g CO2 per km (motor tax €270 per year). Inside there is seating for five and a huge boot of 650 litres. The cabin is modern luxury with a sports car feel. There are four trim levels – SE,
Prestige, Portfolio and RDesign – and standard equipment levels are high including 18” alloys, keyless start, cruise control, halogen headlights with daytime running lights, front fog lights, space saver spare wheel, four electric win-

every month Bunclody native Caroline Kidd brings you the best from the world of motoring, including car reviews, news and more. Caroline is a member of the irish Motoring writers’ association (iMwa) and a jury member for irish Car of the year. you can follow her blog Changing lanes at www.changinglanes.ie. it’s smooth and comfortable and the 2.0-litre diesel with 150bhp I drove is perfect for tugging a full family on board. It’s a bit noisy under hard acceleration but settles down well for cruising, and road and wind noise is well suppressed to make it mostly a serene cruiser. Other engine options include an entry level 1.2-litre TSI or 1.6-litre TDI, both with 110bhp. The diesels have similar economy figures - up to 64mpg and €200 for annual motor tax for both the 1.6- and 2.0-litre. There are three trim levels (Trendline, Comfortline and Highline) and petrol models start at €29,725. Diesel models start at €31,970. A six speed manual comes as standard with the option of a seven speed DSG automatic transmission on diesels. Important for a family car, the new Touran has a five star EuroNCAP safety rating and safety equipment includes a forward collision warning and city emergency brake as standard. Equipment on base Trendline models includes 5” touchscreen, air con, and Bluetooth. Comfortline adds
16” alloys, front fog lights, parking sensors, 6.5” touchscreen and cruise control. Highline models include adaptive cruise control, 17” alloy wheels, sports suspension, and 3 zone climate control. The new Touran has taken a leap forward in quality and sophistication. A versatile, spacious interior with two extra seats in the very back might be all you think you need; the Touran gives you that but also manages to be good to drive. Some rivals have more flair in terms of style and some are that bit more exciting to drive, but the Touran has an edge on rivals because it feels like a truly premium offering in the mid-size MPV segment. Model tested: Volkswagen Touran 2.0-litre TDI 150bhp Highline Price: €38,485 (Range starts at €29,725) Engine: 2.0-litre turbo diesel Power: 150bhp 0-100km/h: 9.3 seconds Economy: 64mpg (4.4l/100km) CO2 emissions: 117g/km Tax band: A4 (€200 per year) n
Motor insurance Premiums up 60% since January 2014 fianna fáil td James Browne has been very vocal on the issue of rising motor insurance premiums with a 60% rise in premiums recorded since January 2014 placing a huge burden on family budgets. James Browne says, “Motor insurance is one of the fastest rising costs being experienced by personal and business customers alike. And because it is a compulsory cost for motorists, they are bearing the brunt of these extortionate price hikes. I am hearing stories every day from people who are seeing their premiums jumping by hundreds of euros and they are extremely worried about being able to afford the cost. “Businesses are also being affected. Substantial price hikes are heaping financial pressure onto small and medium businesses, and in some cases are forcing them to consider their future. One taxi firm saw its motor insurance costs shoot up from €7,000 in 2013 to €56,000, despite having an 11 year no claims bonus. These spiralling premiums are making it unsus-
tainable for smaller companies which depend on a fleet to keep going and could force them out of business. “Fianna Fáil believes there is an obligation on the State to tackle these soaring costs. We want to see the re-establishment of the Motor Insurance Advisory Board to examine all the relevant issues that impact on insurance premiums. The information that is currently available is vague and forces customers to fork out these extortionate prices. “Action is also needed to combat false claims. These bogus pay-outs push up the cost of insurance across the board and people who make these claims must be properly penalised. “A motor insurance database could compile information from insurance companies about premiums and claims settlements. This would increase transparency in the industry without breaching commercial confidentiality. “This suite of measures has the potential to open up the insurance industry to ensure that private and commercial customers get a fair deal.” n

And the final event for the day was a discussion on Self Publishing with Carolann Copland, Pat Fitzpatrick, Siobhan Davis and Karen Power who have all successfully navigated their way through self publishing and shared their considerable knowledge with the appreciative audience. Approximately seventy people a t t e n d e d t h e S a t u rd a y P a n e l Discussion most of them writers from different parts of Ireland and the UK and most of them staying in Enniscorthy for the weekend and
saying that they plan to make a return visit to our beautiful town adding that much needed tourism potential to our Literary Festival. Sunday’s Grande Finale was held at that Enniscorthy icon – the Athenaeum – where the winner of the 1916 Poem for Enniscorthy and the winner of the Colm Toibin Short Story Award were announced. Chairman of Enniscorthy Municipal District Council Paddy Kavanagh was lavish in his praise of the Festival and the organising committee saying that it was uplifting to see such a crowd gathered for the event of people he didn’t know – people who were not from the town, indeed some of them had flown in specially from the UK for the event, that can only augur well for the Festival going forward. Whilst the Festival is all about sourcing and encouraging literature and new and aspiring authors and poets, the Council’s business is to be interested in what it can bring to the town, and ‘as far as I can see looking around me here today – this literary festival is fulfilling its obligation to both’. Paddy went on to speak about Colm Toibin and the high regard he has for Enniscorthy and that Enniscorthy has for him. Poet John Kelly called on the four poets shortlisted to come on stage and read their poems and announced Maria Clifford the winner of the 1916 Poem for Enniscorthy Award – a magnificent piece of sculpture by local artist Julie Moorehouse valued at €1,500 in the name of John’s late father Jack Kelly. Maria then read the winning poem – Republic in Enniscorthy 1916.
Caroline Busher then introduced Independent Judges Lisa Coen, founder of Tramp Press and Vanessa Fox O`Loughlin, founder of the Inkwell Group and Writing.ie, for the Colm Toibin Award, who told the audience how difficult it was to pick the winner from over 300 extremely good short stories. They were thrilled they said with the standard and quality of the writing and looked forward to some of the writers going on to write more short stories and perhaps even novels. In third place was Dads Lost Soul by Lourdes Mackey from Cork, in second place Winter 1963 by Judith Wilson who came all the way from the UK, and the first ever winner of the Colm Toibin Short Story Award was Skunk and Beastie by Holly Atkinson also from the UK who couldn’t be present. The prizes were presented to the winners by Nuala Stack, sister of Colm Toibin, who made Colm’s apologies saying that he was sorry he couldn’t be with us but sent this message: ‘These are well crafted stories, filled with well chosen detail and a wonderful use of voice and rhythm. I want to congratulate the writers.’ Nuala said that she was delighted to be there on his behalf and presented cheques to the three winners. Chairperson, Carmel Harrington, closed the Festival by thanking all who attended, the Athenaeum for the use of the historic venue and her own very hard-working Festival Committee saying that it had been a most informative, successful and enjoyable weekend and she hoped to see everyone again at next year’s event. – Maria Nolan
Winner of the 1916 Poem for Enniscorthy:
RePubliC in enniSCoRTHy 1916 A nucleus of separatist believers Armed action loomed, yet an air of indecision prevailed 200 assembled in full war kit, impatient at their inactivity. Sober in mind and body, public houses silent in readiness. The germ of rebellion awakened in their bellies. Grace’s preliminary shot rang out followed by desultory fire. The Boro bridge blown, stemming the flow of foes. The besieged isolated in the barrack. A bloodless blow for independence against foreign rule. The tricolour fluttered freely o’er the Athenaeum. Premature whispers of surrender befell their ears. Pearse, exhausted in body, triumphant in spirit, briefed Captains Etchingham and Doyle. Face to face, heart to heart, shoulder to shoulder. With profound regret orders were executed. Unconditional surrender. Thus ended the few days of Republic in Enniscorthy. – Maria Clifford

GuilTy buT iNsANE by WexfoRd AuTHoR JAmeS TAyloR lAunCHed in belfAST Guilty but Insane by James Taylor was officially launched at the Royal Ulster Rifles Museum on Sunday 12 June by Richard Doherty, Chairman of Irish Regiments Historical Association. For the past 100 years Captain John Bowen-Colthurst, a member of the Royal Irish Rifles, a man who was proud to call himself Irish, has been portrayed in Irish history as an evil or deranged British officer who murdered or caused to be killed at least six people during the 1916 Rising. It is commonly believed that the British government perverted the course of justice by initially covering up the murders then arranging a verdict of insanity in order to avoid a death sentence. Or did they simply fail in their duty of care to an employee? In Guilty but Insane. J.C. Bowen Colthurst: Villain or Victim? James Taylor uses military records and previously unseen family papers to explore the life and actions of Captain Bowen-Colthurst and allows the reader to decide for themselves whether he was a reallife villain, or a victim of what is now known as PTSD. Published by Mercier Press Guilty but Insane. J.C. Bowen Colthurst: Villain or Victim? is available nationwide and online, RRP €19.99. n
