THE SLANEY NEWS IS NOW AVAILABLE IN 220 OUTLETS!
Congratulations to all involved in the last of the town’s summer festivals for 2016 – the wonderful Blackstairs Blues which took place on 9-11th September. We are now looking ahead to the Enniscorthy Christmas Festival which should be all the more wonderful following the very successful fundraising Night at the Dogs on 22nd September. See the insert in this issue about Christmas in Enniscorthy’s Enchanted Castle and some of the other happenings in town during the festive season. Congratulations also to all involved in two remarkable achievements on the tidy town front. Following on from a recent Irish Business Against Litter survey of 40 Irish towns which ranked Enniscorthy in second place, comes the news that not only has the town achieved a Bronze Medal in this year’s national Tidy Towns competition, but we scored 4 points more than last year which in itself was 5 points more than the previous year. So the trend is definitely upwards and with even more co-operation from everybody in town a Silver Medal is well within our reach. See page 4 for more details. Two more very positive developments are covered in this issue also – the official re-opening of The Athenaeum and the commencement of initial consultations towards the production of a major plan for the regeneration of the Templeshannon area. These two projects will produce major benefits for the town over the years ahead.

Templeshannon set for renewal As part of the development of an Urban renewal plan for the Te m p l e s h a n n o n a r e a o f enniscorthy, two meetings were held in town on 15th september. At the first meeting, held in the Enniscorthy Municipal District chamber in The Presentation Centre, Arup, who have been appointed as the Consultants to prepare the plan, afforded the elected district councillors the opportunity to have an input by outlining their opinions, concerns and aspirations. Several councillors spoke in favour of a Temple Bar type development, others were against that idea. Some spoke of a need for a strong, residential component, others mentioned the need for other facilities such as a cinema, additional car-parking, etc. John Carley, Director of Services, Wexford County Council, stressed that resources are limited so that will undoubetdly have a bearing on what end plan is possible for the area. Following that meeting Manuel Garrido, who repre-
Manuel Garrido of Arup
sents Arup, spoke at some length with the Slaney News. Mr Garrido is an Urban Designer with a Degree in Civil Engineering, a Masters in Urban Design and a Postgraduate Diploma in Mobility Engineering with many years of experience in urban design, planning and engineering projects, within multidisciplinary groups, all over Ireland. He was keen to point out that “regeneration” involves a holistic approach and was not just about the physical buildings and traffic management.
He was very conscious of the history of the area (being the oldest part of Enniscorthy town) and in particular the existence of a number of historical buildings, St Senan’s Graveyard and the proximity to Vinegar Hill, etc. No doubt the involvement in the urban renewal project of local conservation architects, Sheridan & Tierney, will help focus even greater attention on the historical nature of the Templeshannon area. Mr Garrido mentioned the strong infrastructural assets that already exist in the area – the swimming pool , Treacy’s Hotel, railway station, etc and the location of three major schools on that side of town. Mr Garrido said his firm would be taking on board the views of all the people living and working in the area so later that same evening everybody with an interest in the area was invited to attend an Open Meeting facilitated by Wexford County Council and the Consultants in Treacy’s Hotel, Templeshannon. The objectives of this meeting were to: n Raise awareness of what is intended to be achieved
as part of the Urban Renewal Plan process and provide clear and concise information to all stakeholders; n Provide relevant stakeholders with an opportunity to comment and positively influence the proposals; and n Invite feedback and ensure that the project team understands the views of consultees so that they can be considered during the regeneration process. A good turnout for this meeting ensured lively discussion and productive feedback. Many pointed to the fact that the area is not pedestrian friendly and that better footpaths were needed. Set-down parking for coaches was mentioned as was the potential of the disused cinema building. The need to get rid of the unsightly overhead cables was also spoken about and the need for more retail and service businesses in the area. An Urban Renewal Plan for the Templeshannon Area of Enniscorthy can be expected in early December. It should make for interesting reading. n

Enniscorthy tidy town - double boost
Enniscorthy scores very well versus other Co. Wexford towns.
On 5th september it was announced that enniscorthy had finished second in the latest national cleanliness survey meaning that all the efforts in recent years to improve town presentation are beginning to pay dividends as the town was judged “cleaner than european Norms”. The Irish Business Against Litter (IBAL) survey results show Enniscorthy in a very
commendable joint second place out of 40 towns surveyed. The twice-per-year survey, conducted by An Taisce on behalf of IBAL, examined a wide range of sites and locations within each town to determine what level of litter existed, if any. The surveys began at the approach roads speed limit signs while typical sites examined in each town included town centre, Main Street, public car parks, bus / train station, school grounds, residential areas, industrial estates, amenity areas, river walk/promenade and main approach routes. Cllr Paddy Kavanagh, Cathaoirleach of Wexford County Council, said, “The people of Enniscorthy and surrounding district are very proud of our beautiful town and this recent survey is a welcome independent confirmation that the combined efforts of Wexford
County Council, Enniscorthy Tidy Towns and the community of Enniscorthy to present the town to its very best are proving successful.” He continued, “We cannot be complacent and must continue our efforts, but it is very encouraging to see that Enniscorthy can compete with the best nationally when it comes to the cleanliness of our town,” he added. Later in September came more great news – the town has secured a bronze medal in the National Tidy Towns Competition 2016 – a wonderful achievement. Enniscorthy scored a total of 297 marks out of a possible 450, this was four marks more than in 2015, which in turn was five more than the previous year. We will have full details in our November issue. Padraig O’Gorman, Enniscorthy District Manager, pointed out the value that a
reputation of cleanliness can add to the overall economy. “Locals, shoppers and tourists demand first-class standards of cleanliness in every town, and by protecting and enhancing Enniscorthy’s reputation as ‘clean and green’ we can improve not only its economic performance but we can make Enniscorthy a truly great place in which to live, to work and to visit,” said Mr. O’Gorman. Well done to all involved in these successes – Enniscorthy Municipal District and its staff, Enniscorthy Tidy Towns committee and volunteers, etc. And finally, regarding illegal dumping and littering, please use the contact details below to report such activity. Phone: 053-9196313 / 9196684. Email: environmentalcomplaints@wexfordcoco.ie. Anti-litter Hotline (Freephone) 1800 386 733 Office Hours. n
Local Property Tax to increase by 5% wexford county council has set the Local property Tax (LpT) for 2017, increasing the 2016 rate by 5%. This is the first time the council has increased the rate of LpT since its introduction some years ago. The increase will help fund the county’s ambitious Economic Infrastructure Investment Programme, with funding also being provided for
urban renewal projects in a number of locations throughout the county and for improvements to county roads. The increase in LPT will cost the average household in Co. Wexford just under €10 extra in 2017 or about 18 cent per week. The range of projects to be funded in Enniscorthy from the increase in LPT include:
• New Business/Technology Park • Town Centre Tourism Project • Te m p l e s h a n n o n Revitalisation Project. Wexford County Council Chief Executive Tom Enright said, “The decision of the Members to increase the rate of LPT by 5% will create a fund in excess of €600,000 which will be ringfenced to supplement existing expenditure com-
mitments by the Council aimed at improving our economic and community infrastructure and providing funding for the repair and maintenance of the county road network. It is vital that we increase our investment activity in economic development and tourism promotion as these represent County Wexford’s main job creation opportunities.” n

RANSOMwARE – wHAT YOU NEED TO KNOw
by DaviD pohluDek Ferns compuTer services
ransomware is the new hot threat everyone is talking about; what do you need to know? You wake up one day, rub the sleep out of your eyes, and boot up your laptop. Expecting to see a Twitter feed or Facebook profile, instead you’re greeted with a big red image, demanding that if you don’t pay €300 to an unknown party in the next 24 hours, everything you know and love on your computer will be erased, and gone forever. Welcome to the world of “ransomware”, the newest, hottest way that underground criminals are pulling cash from the pockets of innocent victims and using it to fund their clandestine operations. But what exactly is this ransomware stuff, and is there anything you can do to protect yourself against it? As antivirus vendors and security professionals continue to make headway against global malware campaigns on a daily basis, hackers have been looking for more inventive ways of keeping their revenue streams strong without relying on standard credit card fraud techniques. The result of this effort has come in the form of new viruses like CryptoLocker, Cryptowall, and more recently, TeslaCrypt, which are all members of an increasingly popular family of infections known as “ransomware”. The earliest known version of ransomware, called CryptoLocker, first debuted on the scene around the tail end of 2013, and hit so hard the Internet barely had enough time to figure out what it was dealing with in the first place. At its core, ransomware exploits people’s unwillingness to back up their most precious data and files onto a separate hard drive that is completely disconnected from their main PC or network. By not creating separate carbon copies of their photo albums, music, programs, or documents, this type of malware can hold these folders hostage, and expect you to pay because it’s the only version you have in existence. By backing up your operating system and all its contents to an air-gapped external hard drive every single day, you completely mitigate the risk of ransomware by circumventing the tool it uses to get you to pay up in the first place. Alternatively, you can use a cloud storage solution or backup service to provide the same level of protection. This too will prevent you from becoming a victim of ransomware, and it’s often easier than backing up to a hard drive every day or week. On the downside, such services are much more expensive over time than a hard drive, so you pay for their convenience. Either way as long as you’re prepared, you can stay one step ahead of ransomware, and simply shake it off like a bad cold if it ever shows up on your doorstep uninvited. n

After careful consideration and analysis the winners were chosen and announced as Fergal Butler and Enniscorthy’s Noeleen Murphy. The Queen of DIY, Noeleen Murphy, was recently presented with her €500 prize in Smyth's ARRo, Enniscorthy, by Betty Kavanagh. The great prize was thanks to Fleetwood Paints. Greater funding for Community Alert f i n e G a e l we x f o r d T d , minister paul Kehoe, has said that new funding for Garda Text Alert Groups will help support crime prevention in co. wexford. “My colleague, Tánaiste Frances Fitzgerald, has announced that the funding for the Community Alert Programme has been doubled to €350,000 and now incorporates a new €100,000 rebate scheme for local groups registered under the Garda Text
Alert Scheme. This funding will go directly to local groups here in Wexford. I would encourage Text Alert groups to apply to Muintir na Tire for the rebate as soon as possible and at the latest by the end of October 2016. Applications can be made by completing a simple form which is available at http://muintir.ie/Text-AlertRebates/ or on request from rebates@muintir.ie or by calling Muintir na Tire on 062– 51163.
“Fine Gael is committed to prioritising community crime prevention schemes, including Text Alert, and this new funding is a tangible example of that. “The Gardai have made huge progress since the launch of Operation Thor last year and we have seen a reduction of one third in burglaries nationwide. “We now have specific legislation to deal with repeat burglary offenders and particularly
the organised gangs who have targeted many rural communities here in Wexford and across Ireland. “Fine Gael remains fully committed to providing An Garda Síochána with the means to continue to face down criminals and protect communities. Our party is committed to supporting communities across Ireland and I am committed to ensuring that the support is felt here in Wexford.” n

All Hail Athena! All Hail Athena was most definitely the cry on everyone's lips on 23rd september as the daughter of Zeus claimed her rightful place once again centre stage, enniscorthy. Resplendent in all her former glory, the seat of history, thea t re a n d l e a r n i n g , t h e Athenaeum threw open its doors to Minister of State for Defence, Paul Kehoe, who inspected both official army and Enniscorthy's unofficial army, the historical re-enactment group, prior to entering the iconic building to perform the opening. As dignitaries from Wexford County Council, Enniscorthy District Council, Wexford 1916 Committee and the National 1916 Project Management Committee fanned the stage, MC for the evening Helen Ashdown welcomed all and introduced speakers – Oliver Walsh, Enniscorthy District Chairman, John Concannon of the 1916 Project Management Committee, Tony McClean Chairman of the Athenaeum Committee and Minister Paul Kehoe. All were lavish in their praise of the group of people who came together that evening of 5th November 2008 at St. Aidan's Primary School with the aspiration of resurrecting the Athenaeum in honour of the
Wexford Volunteers and in memory of the significant part the Athenaeum played in the lives of the men and women of Enniscorthy since 1892. Tony McClean thanked his Committee of Directors who stuck with the task against all the odds finally achieving success with the constant help and tremendous assistance of Paul Kehoe, Brendan Howlin, James Browne, Tom Moorehouse, Paddy Kavanagh, Padraig O'Gorman, John Carley, Eddie Breen, Sean Og Doyle, Tom Enright and others. Tony had a special mention for all the volunteers who help to run the Athenaeum on a day-to-day basis and for Enniscorthy Historic & Reenactment Society who, he said, have supported the project from the very beginning and have been available for every event held there. Paul Kehoe said that it was an honour and a privilege for him to be invited to perform the official opening of the magnificent building and paid tribute to his former government colleague Brendan Howlin and the Attorney General Maire Whelan for all their help with the project. He encouraged all to support and promote the wonderful town venue – a permanent and fitting tribute to the men and women of 1916 and

lowed by Lush Handmade Cosmetics in 2nd position, An Post in 3rd place and Sam McCauley Chemists 4th. Commenting on the report, J o e B u s h e r, M a n a g e r o f Enniscorthy Credit Union, stated: “This result is testament to the hard work of credit union staff and volunteers who continue to put members’ needs at the forefront of everything that we do. We are very proud of the service which we provide to members. We work hard to understand what our members want and do everything that we can to deliver superior service to them.”
Credit unions are deeply embedded in the communities which they serve. While other financial institutions are closing branches and directing their customers, in many instances, to use automated services, credit unions continue to excel in personalisation. This means that they work hard to understand their members and take time to recognise their individual needs and circumstances. Joe added: “As a memberowned organisation, providing excellent service to our members is very much at the heart of everything that we do. As we continue to expand
Details of funding priorities as well as an overview of the new application process were outlined at the meetings. Brian Kehoe advised that approx €2m in grant aid was available for niche tourism projects with a further €2m for other enterprises including artisan food. Meanwhile, the community sector will benefit from almost €3m and a budget of almost €400,000 would be available for rural environment projects. Wexford Local Community Development Committee (LCDC) in partnership with Wexford Local Development (WLD) has responsibility for the delivery of the new Programme in County Wexford under the remit of the Department of Arts, Heritage, Regional, Rural & Gaeltacht Affairs. The LCDC will be the decision-making body for all LEADER funding allocations. Following a public consultation process completed earlier this year, a number of key objectives which focus on Economic Development, Social Inclusion and Rural Environment have been agreed. These objectives reflect the key challenges facing Co. Wexford (including the Wexford town area which was excluded from previous LEADER Programmes) with regard to economic recovery, employment creation and tackling social exclusion. In a change from previous LEADER programmes, the new Programme will have competitive targeted calls for applications from different sectors at specific times throughout the duration of the programme. These targeted calls with pre-defined budgets will assist in ensuring that only the best and most worthy projects will be approved for grant aid. Such calls will be publicised well in advance. WLD will initially invite “expressions of interest” and then work with eligible applicants to guide them through the process. Completed applications which must be received by the given deadline will be assessed by an Evaluation Committee and a final decision regarding funding will Tony Brady, Kilmuckridge, with then be made by the Cllr Kathleen Codd Nolan. Minister Paul Kehoe announced in mid-September that the long-awaited project for the upgrade to Enniscorthy Wastewater Treatment Plan is currently in the tender process. It is planned for the contract to begin in the first half of 2017. The project will cost in the order of €10m and will deal with the upgrade of the existing wastewater treatment plant, three sewage pump stations and the decommissioning of the existing plant at Killagoley.

the services which we offer, we will continue to ensure that we put the needs of our members first. Our ethos will never change and our members will remain central to all of the decisions that we make, both now and in the future.”A full copy of the CXi 2016 report is available at www.cxi.ie n
There will also separately be a major sewer network upgrade project and sewage pump stations primarily around the town centre in Enniscorthy starting late in 2017 with an anticipated value of €6m. “This will immediately improve water quality in the Slaney estuary as well as servicing residential, commercial and industrial growth in Enniscorthy town,” said the Minister of State. “Investment into our water systems is crucial for the continued development of our communities, the health and wellbeing of our people and the protection of our environment.” This development follows the opening earlier this year of the €7.2 million expansion of the wastewater treatment plant in Gorey. The revamped Courtown Wastewater Treatment Plant now has the capacity to cater for a population equivalent (PE) of 35,000 people, almost triple the previous scheme which had a 12,000 PE capacity.

Debutante fever hit our streets once again in August as pretty belles and dashing beaux gathered in numbers at the Riverside Park Hotel awaiting carriages to take them on to the Osprey Hotel in Naas for yet another Coláiste Bríde Debutante Ball.
The excitement, the elation, the expectation were all palpable as entire families complete with grannies, granddads, aunts, uncles, cousins and siblings not to mention mams, dads and neighbours congregated to capture the beauty, the vitality, the activ-
ity, the clatter and clang and clink of our emerging youth. One cannot help but be drawn into the madness, the magic and the mayhem that erupts at this time each year as the our young debutantes come together to admire, and praise, and preen and ogle, and pose
and pout for the countless photographs that will adorn walls, papers, family albums, phones, ipads, twitter and facebook over the coming weeks. Young and old and everything in between become entangled in the enchanting web of exquisite dresses, stunning shoes, pristine shirts, classy suits, matching dickie bows and ties, fabulous corsages and delicious boxes of chocolates, or spun on the merry-goround of hair, makeup, nails, bags, fake tans, pedicures, manicures, coiffeurs and all else that constitutes this fantasyland of glitz, glamour and allure. The town basks in the colour, the scents and the sounds of youth, style, exuberance and enthusiasm and we hope benefits lucratively from it all. The sublime, transient days of the Debs gives our young belles and beaux the Cinderella Experience before they stumble head first into the real adult world and life as we, older people, know it, a little more Cinders than Cinderella perhaps, so it is only right that they should enjoy and treasure this special fairytale time with family, friends and classmates. – Maria Nolan

Singing The Blues John Street Blues Band at Holohans. Pic: Maria Nolan.
Enniscorthy might have been singing the blues in September but it certainly wasn’t feeling blue as our drinking establishments rocked and swayed to the rhythm and rhyme of the twenty-second Blackstairs Blues Festival. There was something for everyone over the weekend with twelve acts along with a Blues Workshop and a Guitar Seminar in thirteen venues around the town including Enniscorthy Castle and Enniscorthy Library. I particularly enjoyed the Saturday night gig at Holohan’s with John Street Blues Band and the afternoon jam session
with Mike Brookfield introducing thirteen different guests giving one a fantastic, synoposised flavour of the weekend. The punters were happy with the variety and standard of music, musicians and sessions and the publicans had to be happy with the response, so well done to the organisers and sponsors of yet another successful festival twenty two years on. Congrats to John Murphy, Mairead Ennis, Ibar Carty and Sean Doyle, and others who are transforming Enniscorthy into a Mecca for followers of the Blues. – Maria Nolan

Alice’s search is on…
Enniscorthy’s Alice Lynskey is a singersongwriter who has been making a name for herself on the music scene over recent years. Last month she was on South East Radio’s morning show singing a couple of her songs which went down really well with listeners. She appeared in RTE’s The Hit a few years ago when The Stunning recorded her song. Since then Alice has got a degree and commenced working. But music is still her passion and she’s now trying to start a band and so the search is on for serious musicians from Co. Wexford with a view to gigging and recording original songs. In particular Alice would like to hear from guitarists, bass players, keyboard players, etc. Alice tells us that she would be very happy to co-write material also. She can be contacted by email: countrymusic.alice@gmail.com n

On 2nd September D Bar at Templeshannon, Enniscorthy, was transformed into a very classy Gin Joint as hotelier Anton Treacy and his lovely wife, Yvonne, launched Wexford’s first Gin Club in conjunction with Enniscorthy Chamber of Commerce end of season social. Gin drinkers and non gin drinkers alike were invited to come and sample the stunning array of gin cocktails available and sign up to become members of the Wexford Gin Club. Gin Club has kind of 1920’s Great Gatsby upper crust connotations and Anton Treacy explained that gin and tonic was originally created by the British as the quinine in the tonic water helped to prevent malaria in the Colonies and the gin – a very English spirit was added to the strong tasting tonic to make it that bit more palatable – creating that most pleasurable of drinks that is known and enjoyed by millions today – G&T. The rock star has returned to her soul folk-roots, live and on-stage. Hazel O'Connor performs with the celebrated Irish harpist Cormac de Barra, in a captivating and intimate special performance. This powerful blend of voices and musicianship brings a classy touch of energy to Hazel’s vibrant performance. “Sumptuous songs with a soulful, introspective lyrical depth. The arrangements are largely traditional in feel, helped by Cormac de Barra’s exquisite harp...seamless forays into pop blues and soul, and the familiar silken gravel of O’Connor’s voice” - Irish Times

Walk with me
Ballindaggin
First day at school 2016
On Sunday 28th August the churches of St. Mary’s and St. Aidan’s came together for the annual Parish Walk around the town of Enniscorthy. In beautiful, autumnal sunshine parishioners gathered at the Church of St. Mary’s where Fr. Odhran Furlong addressed them on behalf of himself and Fr. Billy Swan and thanked them for coming
together and walking together. He paid tribute to all who had turned out in white for peace. It was most appropriate in this year of commemoration, he said, that we remember the symbolism of our national flag with the white uniting the green and the orange. He then called on the Reverend Nicola Halford of St. Mary’s to say a few words
and Rev. Halford invited the congregation to pray together leading them in the ‘Our Father’ prior to setting off at a leisurely pace which culminated with afternoon tea at St. Aidan’s Manse. A lovely, social gathering and coming together of people and one definitely to be repeated and continued. – Maria Nolan

Rathnure man, Dwane Doran, was announced as the winner of the competition which came as no surprise to the Slaney News as Dwane is a regular provider of superb quality photos to us. Ann Waters, Manager at Hook Lighthouse, said, “All of the team here at Hook Lighthouse have taken part in trying to decide on a winning photograph from amongst the competition entries. The standard and the talent is incredible so it made for a very difficult decision, the winning photograph by Dwane Doran is stunning. A big congratulations to Dwane.” n

Food Academy to support almost 300 jobs! 256 people are currently employed by producers from the Food Academy Programme in the South East region, which is run by the Local Enterprise O ff i c e s , B o r d B i a a n d SuperValu. An additional 42 new jobs are expected over next 12 months. A survey by the Local Enterprise Offices shows that 58 small food and drink producers in the South East region, members of the Food Academy Programme who employ 256 people, have made the breakthrough into the retail market. Those same businesses expect to create a further 42 jobs over the next 12 months, bringing the total number of jobs supported to 298 across the South East. At a recent event organised by the Local Enterprise Offices,
the Minister for Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation, Ms. Mary Mitchell O’Connor TD, met with food producers from eight different regions. All eight companies are among the 281 producers to have successfully made the breakthrough into the retail market. Run over a series of workshops, the Food Academy Programme is an initiative of the Local Enterprise Offices, Bord Bia and SuperValu to nurture new start-ups in the food and drink sector and it focuses on areas such as business planning, understanding consumer trends and raising finance. Minister Mitchell O’Connor encouraged more ‘early-stage’ food and drink producers to apply for the programme through the Local Enterprise Office Wexford. The Minister
said: “The Food Academy Programme has been running very successfully for the last t h re e y e a r s b y t h e L o c a l Enterprise Offices in partnership with Bord Bia and SuperValu. This programme has already enabled almost 300 small food businesses to start and grow, creating valuable jobs across every county and region. One of my priorities as Minister is creating an environment where job growth can thrive, particularly in rural Ireland. I want to thank Bord Bia and SuperValu for their support and I want to thank the LEOs for their endeavours in developing this opportunity”. assistance, mentoring and online trading supports. Breege Cosgrave, Senior Enterprise Development Officer (Acting) with the Local Enterprise Office Wexford, said: “By equipping owners and managers of local food businesses with industry knowledge and skills, they have a better chance of succeeding in business. The goal of the Food Academy Programme is to help more food producers to start selling through supermarkets, as well as through farmers’ markets and to provide them with the supports, information and advice to scale up and achieve this retail break-through. According to research undertaken by the Local Enterprise Offices, Food Academy producers in the South East region already support 256 jobs. Over
the next 12 months, these producers are planning to create an additional 42 new jobs overall.” Aidan Cotter, the CEO of Bord Bia, highlighted how the programme helps new food producers understand market positioning and ‘Unique Selling Points.’ He said: "Bord Bia is delighted with the success of the Food Academy Programme. The partnership approach with the Local Enterprise Offices and SuperValu has created a real opportunity to cultivate sustainable small food companies by supporting them through the initial challenging phases of growth. These small innovative and dynamic food businesses play an important role in Ireland’s agri-food sector both locally and nationally. The producers receive a combination of commercial and marketing

Quinten McCauley
Quinten McCauley, originally from Essex but an Enniscorthy resident for the last ten years, has invented what he believes to be the world's first Charging Aid for Smartphones and Tablets called The Grip 'N' Charge. He says, "The days of thinking you’ve plugged your phone in to charge – only to be greeted by a flat battery hours later – are over." McCauley noticed a surprising number of smartphones and tablets having problems
charging, which he believes in this day and age is unacceptable. The Grip 'N' Charge is a super simple device which securely keeps your charging connector in place. It is both Android and Apple compatible. He says, “The Grip 'N' Charge guarantees you get the most out of your charging opportunity, having a full charge when you wake up or arrive at work. It's great to use whilst driving too, and kids love it for keeping them charged playing their favourite games and apps. It stops your phone/tablet getting knocked off of charge in a busy home/workplace environment and also, as a great bonus, helps prevent costly wear and tear to your charging ports." Mr McCauley tells us that The Grip 'N' Charge has been patented but funds are needed to get the device into production. McCauley is trying to crowdfund using the popular online platform "Kickstarter". For more details check out the website www.GripNCharge.com, and www.Facebook.com/GripNCha rge. n

Free Debt Advice Enniscorthy accounting firm, R Hendy & Co, in conjunction with the Insolvency Service of Ireland, is offering people in financial difficulty a free, confidential debt advice meeting in the Kilkenny Ormonde Hotel on Saturday 8th October from 10am-4pm. On the day, Kerry O’Neill, Eric Hendy and a selection of other Personal Insolvency Practitioners and Approved Intermediaries – the qualified debt experts regulated by the ISI – will hold free one-to-one meetings with people who are in serious financial difficulty to discuss their financial circumstances and debt solution options as there is a debt solution for every situation. Anyone wishing to register for a meeting at this event can do so on the website www.eventbrite.ie, alternatively, they can contact the ISI information line on 076 106 4200,
free text ISI EVENT to 50015 for a callback. The ISI’s solutions are unique in that: A PIP (Personal Insolvency Practitioner) will deal with all of a person’s creditors to work out a long-term solution to their debt problems. While this is happening, the person will get a Protective Certificate which means that their creditors cannot contact them. Informal solutions being offered by lenders or debt advisors that are not regulated by the ISI cannot offer this protection. The solutions are legally binding. This means the terms cannot be changed without the agreement of both parties so there will be no surprise changes or amendments to the terms along the way. With all of the ISI’s solutions, the person will return to solvency which means that they can move on from their debt problems and get a fresh start. n

LIBRARY SERVICE HELPS TO CONNECT WEXFORD! Libraries across Co. Wexford are facilitating a postcard campaign which allows members of the public to easily reach out to Wexford’s diaspora in an effort to generate foreign direct investment (FDI) leads for the county which will create new employment opportunities. The ConnectWexford.com postcard campaign is being organised by Wexford County Council and ConnectIreland and is supported by the government through the Local Diaspora Engagement Fund. The campaign aims to highlight the ConnectIreland initiative among Wexford people at home and abroad. The idea behind ConnectIreland is to get Irish people at home and abroad to use their business networks to discover new inward investment opportunities for the country. Co. Wexford already has one success story from the ConnectIreland initiative with American company, United Chemical Technologies (UCT) currently in the process of establishing 17 new jobs in Wexford. Irishman Gerry Grady heard UCT were thinking of expanding to Europe so he put them in touch with ConnectIreland and that introduction resulted in UCT establishing a base here in Wexford. It is hoped that similar leads and successes will result from this ConnectWexford.com postcard campaign. If you have a family member, friend or other contact working abroad, please fill in a free ConnectWexford.com postcard at your local library, address it to your contact abroad and the library will post it on your behalf.
As well as containing your own personal message, the ConnectWexford.com postcard prompts the recipient to scan their extended business network abroad and see if any companies they know are planning to expand internationally. If they do know of a suitable company, the recipient can register as a ‘connector’ on ConnectWexford.com and introduce a decision-maker at that expanding company to ConnectIreland. ConnectIreland will then work with that company to encourage them to set up a base in Ireland. The great news is that, as a reward for making the initial introduction, the registered ‘connector’ will receive €1,500 for every job the new company creates in Ireland (up to 100 jobs). Carolyne Godkin, Economic Development Officer in Wexford County Council, is encouraging everyone to use our diaspora to let the world know that Co. Wexford is a great place to do business in. “The goal is to get as many ‘connectors’ in Wexford and abroad registered on ConnectWexford.com as possible. These connectors can then pass on any relevant business leads for the team at ConnectIreland to pursue and capitalise on for Wexford and for the country.” If you know of a foreign company that is expanding and doesn’t currently have a base in Ireland, then register as a ‘connector ’ yourself on www.connectwexford.com. Introduce a decision-maker in the company to ConnectIreland and if the company establishes a base here, you can reap the rewards. n

The latest search to find Ireland’s Best Young Entrepreneur (IBYE) is underway in Wexford through the Wexford Local Enterprise Office. With a €2million investment fund available, including a €50,000 investment fund for Wexford winners, the enterprise initiative from the Department of Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation and Enterprise Ireland attracted 1,400 applications across the country last year and supported over 450 young entrepreneurs through training, mentoring and direct financial assistance. The initiative is co-ordinated by all 31 Local Enterprise Offices and begins with a nationwide competition across three categories at county level: Best Idea, Best Start-Up Business and Best Established Business. Around 450 applicants, across every Local Authority area, will be invited to regional ‘Entrepreneur Bootcamps’ in November, to help them develop their business and new venture ideas. With an investment fund of €50,000, Local Enterprise Office Wexford will award six investment prizes to three category winners and three runners-up, before the Regional Finals early next year. The local winners in the Best Start-Up and Best Established Business categories will receive €15,000 each and the two runners-up will each receive €5,000. The Best Business Idea winner
locally will receive an investment prize of €7,000 and the runner-up will receive €3,000. Breege Cosgrave with Local Enterprise Office Wexford explains: “The €50,000 investment fund for Wexford winners is a very important part of the competition and will help more young entrepreneurs to grow their businesses and create more jobs here locally. Other business supports, such as management training, networking and one-toone mentoring are also at the heart of the IBYE competition. 450 young entrepreneurs benefitted from these business supports last year, so the rewards are there for participants, as well as for the winners. Taking part in IBYE will help Ireland’s young entrepreneurs to move their businesses to the next level, whatever stage their business is at.” The competition is now in its third year and last year’s local winners were: Richard Murphy, MyMoodandMe in the Best Business Idea category; Ian Coleman, LifeBites in the Best Start-Up Business category and Diarmaid Ó Súilleabháin, D. O’Sullivan Consultant Engineers in the Best Established Business category. To enter, young entrepreneurs between the ages of 18 and 35 in Wexford are being asked to visit the competition website at www.ibye.ie, to submit their entry online. The closing date to enter is Friday, October 14th and there is no entry fee. n

Wake Up Wednesdays!
VET DIARY FOR OCT
with the Moyne Veterinary Clinic
This month Joe Kavanagh looks back at 75 years of the practice. Early October 1941, a young enthusiastic man came back to his hometown, eager to start out on his own and forge a new chapter in Enniscorthy's history. That man was Simon Kavanagh, my father, and 75 years later the veterinary practice he began is still going strong. It came from humble beginnings though… in his first 6 months of business he only treated 3 animals and, as he said himself, 2 out of 3 of them died!! It was the middle of the war years, nobody had anything and animals were dying of hunger as much as anything else. Thankfully those days are gone and, by and large, most animals are well taken care of. The standards that Simon set were honesty, integrity and commitment to achieving the best results. He would make up special lotions and potions for the individual animals, giving strict instructions on what to give and how often. He'd advise farmers to brew up strong tea and sugar, make up gruel, porridge, beat up eggs and drench the animal with the mixture. They'd be heading out the door armed with their remedies, instructions and a word to the wise: "Don't come back here until you've all that done!" Many's a farmer got a bollocking for not carrying out the instructions given but they'd take it all in good jest as the topic would usually quickly shift from that to politics, Dev, or whoever was in power, and the affairs of the nation would be resolved over the counter. Farmers and townspeople alike still regale stories of coming in with their dog, calf, pig, sheep or horse and how he'd keep working until he could solve the case, whatever length it took. He enjoyed people as much as the animals and was particularly fond of kids who'd arrive down with their dog or cat or pet lamb and he'd go the extra yard to help them... factoring in that bond between man and beast. It's 75 years to the day almost since he began in Templeshannon in Enniscorthy. The practice has grown, developed and moved with the times to a new location on the Old Dublin Road but the principles still stand firm – loyalty, kindness and integrity. To the people of the town, its hinterland, and the county we owe a huge debt of gratitude for entrusting your animals in our care. We're grateful for this opportunity and wish to say a heartfelt ‘Thank You’ to all our loyal and faithful clients. Things don't always work out the way you'd hope but we always strive to do our best and hand it over to the man above after that. Simon served the people of Wexford spanning 3 generations of families practising veterinary medicine for 63 years. People stuck with him through thick and thin and so we hope we can continue this legacy for another 75 years and beyond. To mark our 75 years in practice, please look out for our "SPECIALS" on our Facebook Page for the month of October. n

Enniscorthy business people meet for ‘Wake Up Wednesdays’ at Enniscorthy & District’s impressive new premises at Portsmouth House, Templeshannon, Enniscorthy. Pic: Maria Nolan.
On Wednesday 7th September at the rather early hour of 7.30am a group of approximately twenty local business people came together under the new Wake Up Wednesday initiative of the Enniscorthy & District Chamber. Sponsored by AIB and chaired by Manager Maree Lyng, this enterprising programme is designed to bring the business community of Enniscorthy together to grow each other’s businesses. As President John Burke O’Leary put it, ‘We all find it much easier to commend and sell others than to praise ourselves, and that is what our Wake Up Wednesdays is all about.’ ‘It is an unique opportunity to network, connect and make each other aware of all the business that is being done in the town and environs.’ ’It is all of us together, he said, ‘in business for business’ quoting the new slogan of the Enniscorthy & District Chamber. Wednesday morning’s group had the distinction of being the first to gather at the new Enniscorthy & District Chamber premises at Portsmouth House and included many new, enterprising ventures in the areas of web design, job coaching, virtual administration, music, health & safety, nutrition & health coaching, insurance, cognitive behavioural therapy, social media, wheelie-bin cleaning, civil engineering and building contracting. Two that sparked my interest were Mysterious Holidays and South East TV. South East TV is a multimedia limited company focusing on
music, culture and documentaries. SETV.IE is one of the first registered and licensed online broadcasters in Ireland, and is the only bi-lingual of its type, accessible in both Irish and English. SETV’s ethos is to platform local people and promote local business and talent, and will feature interviews with South East based artists and musicians along with studio-recorded and live performances. Its iWonder show is an opportunity for people to stand in front of the camera and speak for three minutes on a topic, subject or organisation that they are passionate about. For more information contact Roisin Williams, Media Manager, at 0876201512. Local women Ellen Doherty and Bridget Crean discovered a niche in the tourism sector and began what they now call Mysterious Holidays. Mysterious Holidays is aimed at providing something new and different for the visitor whilst utilising to the full Ireland’s wealth of ghostly and mystic heritage. Ghostly Walks, Haunted Accommodation and Psychic Readings are just part of their spooky packages which include such atmospheric venues as Enniscorthy Castle, Loftus Hall, Shankill Castle, Kilkenny, Charleville Castle, Offaly, Huntington Castle, Carlow and Wicklow Gaol. These enterprising ladies are also offering Ghosts Walks to tourists and locals alike which include a stroll through your
town of choice, hearing tales of mystique and legend along the way coupled with threatrics if you so wish. The girls are now e n d e a v o u r i n g t o p ro m o t e Enniscorthy in this way and they have been busy gathering stories and eerie tales of the town over the last few months. Their Night Walk leaves Enniscorthy every Friday by appointment at 8pm and is fun, interactive and entertaining. Mysterious Holidays is fast becoming the ‘go to’ site for ‘Fun Spooky Tourism’ so if this is what floats your boat call Bridget or Ellen at 089-2522708/2522732. Our Wake Up Wednesday session concluded with a most informative and energising talk by Calodagh McCumiskey of Spiritual Earth who told the gathering about her Anti Virus Programme for the Mind saying, ‘If you can change your mind you can change anything.’ On Thursday 6th October Calodagh will be delivering a two-hour session called Improving Your Performance through Mindfulness and Lifestyle Balance at the Chamber building from 68pm at a cost of €25. This short course will show people how to relax and get the most out of their personal and business life. Bookings can be made through Chamber CEO Catriona Murphy at 053-9232006. Full marks to Enniscorthy & District Chamber for this wonderful new Wake Up Wednesday initiative which is sure to grow and develop over the coming months. – Maria Nolan
€189,455 Funding for Rural Recreation Projects Minister Paul Kehoe has welcomed €189,455 in funding announced to enhance and upgrade recreational projects across co. Wexford. €102,830 will be allocated to the upgrade of Walking Trails throughout the county and €86,625 for the development of a cycle Lane. Minister Kehoe stated; “This funding is part of the implementation of the National Countryside Recreation Strategy, which is tasked with the development of trails that will serve as both an amenity for the local community
and as a draw for tourism to the area. “The funding comes as part of a €4,455,000 package announced by Michael Ring, Minister for Regional Economic Development. The Department and Fáilte Ireland have invested considerable resources into the operation of the Walks Scheme, the implementation of the National Countryside Recreation Strategy and assisting Fáilte Ireland in the development and promotion of trails, including the Fáilte Ireland National Looped Walks, which were funded by Dept

of Community, Equality & Gaeltacht Affairs. “This Scheme has resulted in the development and enhancement of nearly 40 trails across the country. As a result, significant social and economic spin-off for local communities has been achieved. “The county of Wexford has a lot to offer to both those that live here and those that visit. It is initiatives such as this and the likes of Ireland’s Ancient East that will increase Wexford attractiveness to tourists and will keep people coming back time and again.”

View from the Hill COngratulatiOns Congratulations to Enniscorthy’s Tidy Town Committee and volunteers on the excellent result of their efforts in this year’s national competition. This column has on a number of occasions in the past praised all those who do so much to keep our town tidy and neat. It must be a source of great satisfaction to all of them to get such an outcome. Well done. MiChael D. There was great praise from many for our President Michael D. Higgins as a result of his appearance on the Late Late Show recently. People were gushing in their comments in respect of the great man. However, and as I often stated before there
is always a ‘However’, it was a very easy interview for him to do. At no point during the interview was he asked to justify his enormous salary of €250,000 per year which is a ridiculous amount of money considering that he doesn’t have to pay for anything out of this. His accommodation, transport, staff both household and administrative, who are in most cases extremely well paid also, and even his food is paid for by the taxpayer. And this was relevant because during the interview, and indeed in many speeches, Michael D. constantly condemns materialism and gives the impression that he is not interested in such. Of course it might have been embarrassing for Ryan Tubridy to raise such an issue
because he is on an even more generous salary. The matter of whether he will run again was raised by Tubridy in a fawning manner to which Michael D. gave an evasive answer. The fact is, and he should have been reminded of it, is that he emphatically stated during the last campaign that he had no intention of serving more than one term. The Late Late appearance was clearly designed to fly a kite for the next presidential election and judging by the reaction to his appearance I would be fairly confident that his mind is now made up regardless of what he said the last time. And who can blame him for not wanting to walk away from all the perks and glamour of a non too strenuous job. I think the next referendum in this country should be about changing the constitution to remove the superfluous office of president. This country is too small for this expense which puts some individual into such a position of privilege. Drug Dealers Cash I was listening to a radio programme recently where the matter of drug abuse and its effects on communities and families was being discussed. One of the threads running through the debate was the question of lack of resources available to both the enforcement and treatment services who are strug-

gling to cope with this growing problem. At that point one of the contributors suggested that all monies and assets seized from drug dealers and their ilk should be ringfenced for the relevant services rather than go in to the normal exchequer funds. This I thought was a very good point and should be followed up by those in positions to influence such matters. BrOaDBanD COverage We are all well aware of the hopeless broadband service available to those who live and work outside our main towns. Rural Ireland is in the dark ages in this regard and the lack of such vital infrastructure is a major problem for businesses, schools and households once you travel a few miles outside built up areas. One of the reasons is that to receive any sort of an average service your business, school or home
must effectively be in the line of sight of a distribution mast and even then it’s pot luck as to what kind of reception you will receive. Various companies will tell you that coverage is strong in the area but the reality is that they are measuring reception at the mast and by the time it gets to your place of need the power of the signal has dropped considerably. Therefore regardless of what particular service provider you use the outlook is just the same. One of the reasons for this is that the cost of the infrastructure required to improve the service is apparently beyond the ability of individual companies to finance. Therefore until such time as competition in the market place is put aside in favour of combined or joint provision of the necessary infrastructure it will be at least 20 years before anything half decent in relation to broadband service is available outside the boundaries of our towns. OlD age PensiOns We have heard the debate in recent times in the run in to the Budget of the need to give pensioners an increase of at least five euro a week. While a small amount, a fiver would at least not be the insult of three euro given by Labour’s Joan Burton last year. There is another big issue with contributory pensions. Joan Burton’s
and Labour’s legacy to the pensioners of this country will be remembered for the changes she introduced in the 2012 Social Welfare Bill. These changes to the contribution criteria, supported by Fine Gael of course, means that hardworking people who have worked most of their lives and who are now coming to pension age will be deprived of their expected full pension. This issue is going to become big in the next year or so when its effects trickle down to those applying for pensions. A little birdie tells me that it will be raised in the Dáil shortly as a result of an intervention by New Ross councillor Michael Sheehan and once raised will not go away until a solution is found. Methinks this matter will be a further worry for Fine Gael’s Paul Kehoe and Michael D’Arcy when they start knocking doors in the next general election which may not be that far away. If I was one of those gentlemen, one of whom will probably lose his seat next time out, I would be contacting current Social Welfare Minister Varadakar and demanding a reversal of this policy and an immediate reinstatement of the full contributory pension to those already robbed of this by socialist Joan’s efforts in 2012. We are often asked: Who is the “View from the Hill” columnist? All we can say is that the author’s surname is NOT Doyle!

We may eat with our eyes, but for most of us, we buy cars with them too, and the Megane has traffic stopping angles and curves. the new Megane’s distinctive front and rear lighting signatures are permanently lit when the engine is switched on, so there’s always that bit of drama about the Megane. together, it’s not a bad look at all for what underneath is a pretty conventional, mass market, five door hatchback with a sub€20,000 entry price. The design team has also done a good job inside the new Megane, and it feels just as fresh and modern as the outside. A colour digital speedometer is the focal point for the driver and a very neat touchscreen system sits in the centre console for controlling infotainment and viewing vehicle information and settings. The quality of the plastics and materials is generally good around the cabin, and sporty GT Line cars have some lovely blue stitching and blue trim on the doors and dash. The cabin space is adequate for this class. Legroom in the rear does not seem as generous as in some rivals and the middle seat passenger will feel short changed on space. It looks like cabin space has been lost to the boot because it’s a Golf, Astra and Focus beater at 434 litres, but a high load lip makes the loading and unloading of heavier items a bit more difficult. Power comes from the well-proven 1.5-litre (110hp) and 1.6-litre (130hp) dCi diesel engines. A 1.2-litre (130hp) TCe turbocharged petrol unit

Renault Megane
is available on the entry level Expression trim. A sporty Megane GT houses a 1.6-litre TCe (205hp) turbo petrol engine developed by Renaultsport, with 4Control four-wheel steering for extra agility. The 1.5-litre dCi 110 diesel is the most efficient of the range with emissions of just 96g CO2 and fuel consumption as low as 3.7l/km (76.4mpg). It doesn’t have the outright flexibility of a more powerful engine, so overtaking manoeuvres will require dropping gears to get an adequate shove of torque, but it triumphs for its frugality and refinement. Even when under pressure, this is one diesel that never makes a racket. The new Megane has been engineered to be more dynamic on the road. It has got a little grippy front end and the steering is tactile and direct so you can place the car confidently on the road. It’s not the most fun to drive of its class, but when pushed the Megane doesn’t put a foot wrong. Whether cruising on the motorway or driving in and around town, it’s a

quiet, civilised and comfortable car. There are five trim lines for the new Megane on the Irish market: Expression (from €19,490), Dynamique Nav (from €23,990), Dynamique S Nav (from €25,290), GT Line Nav (from €25,990) and GT (from €30,690). Petrol models are available from €19,490, while diesels are available from €21,490, and even the high specced GT Line on test with the 1.5dCi diesel looks like great value, coming in at €25,990. Standard equipment on Expression trim includes hill start assist, cruise control, electric front windows, air con and Bluetooth. Stepping up to Dynamique Nav looks worthwhile for 16” alloys, electronic parking brake, auto lights and wipers, lane departure warning, traffic sign re c o g n i t i o n , a u t o m a t i c high/low beam, front fog lights, rear parking sensors, electric, folding door mirrors, electric rear windows, digital speedometer, keycard entry and go, dual zone climate control, Multisense system (ambient lighting and driving modes selector),
leather steering wheel, and RLink 2 multimedia system with 7” touchscreen. The new Megane is sure to be a hit for Renault because there is very little between this car and the best in class. Many will just fall for the adventurous good looks. The interior lacks the refined and premium character of the very best in the segment, and other hatches would have the upper hand in terms of practicality but the Megane pulls a trump card with one of the most refined and frugal diesel engines in the segment. Combined with the Megane’s naturally good driving character, this car is a pleasure for day to day driving and the pricing makes it look like great value. Enniscorthy rowers compete in London five members of edermine ferry rowing Club had the pleasure of joining fellow Wexford rowers from st. Kearn’s r.C. on their recent trip to london to take on the challenge of the 2016 thames great river race. this annual event attracts all classes of rowers from around the globe with serious racing crews aiming to complete the gruelling 21 mile race in the fastest possible time to claim the title of being the uK’s traditional Boat Champions.
Starting in London’s Docklands and finishing in Ham, Richmond, the racing route brings rowers under the numerous and majestic bridges of London and past many of its historic landmarks – it is an uplifting experience to be cheered on by the huge crowds lining the bridges and spectator spots along the route. No strangers to the event St. Kearn’s have been represented at this prestigious race for the last eleven years, while Edermine
has also been represented on a number of occasions in the past. This year over 330 crews participated in the race and nothing could prepare someone for the spectacle of boats and vibrant colours on the river until they experience it first-hand. Many crews complete the race as a fund-raiser for charity organisations and go all out with fancydress themes, adding to the colour and fun on the day. Crew sizes range from the
smallest two-person jolly-boat to the massive 10-oared Dutch whalers, international dragonboats and out-riggers to name but a few, with some of these boats being manned by anything up to 22 rowers or paddlers! Both Wexford crews rowed their traditional Slaney Cots which are a small, wooden, four-oared boat and along with a cox and passenger this involved a crew of six per boat. Wexford and Irish flags were displayed proudly on the “Lady Marmion” and “St. Kearn’s” cots for their journey on the Thames clearly identifying their origin as they weaved their way through the international flotilla of boats. Conditions for this year’s race were challenging to put it mildly with crews finding themselves surfing the waves and being treated to free showers of Thames river water – bailing out surplus water while rowing became the new skill on the day! Nonetheless both crews braved the elements and were well satisfied with their respective finishing times of 2 hrs 55 mins (Lady

Marmion) and 3 hrs 5 mins (St. Kearn’s) – the fastest boat on the day having completed the race in 2 hrs 12 mins and the last boat in 5 hrs 15 mins placing the Slaney Cots well up in the rankings. Crews who participated in the 2016 race were Joe Carley, Brenda Mullins, Jacqui & Ruairi Murphy, Fintan & Marie Kinsella
(Lady Marmion) and Rene Mullins, Nicky Walsh, Richard Roche, Hazel McGee, Gillian Roche and Jody Waters (St. Kearns). Both clubs have plans to return again for the 2017 race and would hope to see even more Slaney Cot crews joining them for this memorable rowing event. – Maria Nolan

EDG wows Enniscorthy audiences enniscorthy Drama group surpassed itself last month with four gripping performances of tom Murphy’s a whistle in the Dark at the Presentation Centre. the compelling piece of drama received standing ovations and a tremendous response from the enniscorthy audience. Brilliantly directed by Jimmy Kavanagh, this dark tale tells the story of the Carney family who left Mayo in the 1950`s for work in Coventry. The eldest brother Michael has married an English girl and is desperately trying to integrate and become part of the local scene while hampered at every turn by his three brothers Harry, Iggy and Hugo who are only interested in using their fists to prove that they are better than anyone else especially another Irish family in the area, the Mullryans. Things in the Carney househ o l d a re b a d e n o u g h w i t h Michael’s marriage to English Betty precariously hanging in the balance as they struggle to cope with the brothers’ constant drinking and fighting, but they are to become an awful lot worse with a visit from Dada Carney and their youngest brother Des. Dada, the brutish patriach immediately sets out to control, manipulate and set the other brothers against the eldest Michael
whom they accuse of being a coward because he is trying to remove himself from their tribal thinking and violent ways. Dada is expertly played by that old gentleman of Gorey theatre, Gary Lombard, who delivers a stunning performance as the disgruntled Irish father with a chip akin to a cement block on his shoulder having been forced to resign from the Gardai, taking his disappointment with life and his inferiority complex out on his wife and children in a violent and abusive manner. Michael Carney is a troubled soul, intelligent enough to know what his father is and what he has done to their family but desperate to love him and be loyal to the family unit whilst at the same time really wanting to build a new, normal life for himself far away from the madness and the violence that was his childhood and adolescence. Rob McEvoy depicts the inner struggle and torment of Michael Carney to perfection. Harry Carney pretends to be less intelligent than he actually is and uses his supposed stupidity as an excuse for using his fists instead of his brain to solve his problems. He is the leader of the fighting Carneys and Fintan Kelly excels in the role goading the older Michael and egging on the younger brother Des. Fintan’s
L-R: Fintan Kelly and Brendan Robinson.
performance is top drawer, his intensity and menacing demeanor never wanes, he delivers every line with passion and terrifying anger that has the power to frighten and shock his audience. Iggy Carney is the muscle of the family, a strongly built fighting machine who is brave beyond question but sometimes bewildered as to why he has to be like that and George Percival’s wonderful portrayal of his character gives us fleeting glimpses of his confusion and uncertainty. George is extremely well cast in the role having the physique to go with the part. Hugo Carney simply follows the pack and does what he is told with no real or definite opinions or mind of his own and Michael Whelan turns in a most believable performance in the role of ‘the thick’ of the Carney family. Des Carney, the youngest brother of the Carney family, is at a crossroads in his life and is not sure which way to turn, he has admiration for both of his older brothers Michael and Harry and can’t decide which one to side with. Brendan Robinson is a revelation in the role. His performance is excellent for a relative newcomer to drama, he is comfortable, clear, relaxed and convincing with great stage presence. Mush O’Reilly, friend of the
Carney family, is your typical Irish ‘cute hoor’ and is expertly played by Jamie T Murphy who adds humour and levity to the darkness in his own distinctive style. Jamie possesses that wonderful ability on stage of making the audience like him. Betty, the only female in the play, is extremely well portrayed by Annemarie Whelan who does her utmost to remain sane and pleasant and keep some semblance of normality in her home and in her marriage amidst the ever erupting abuse and violence of her husband’s family. Annemarie gives a most convincing performance complete with facial expressions and English accent. Tom Murphy certainly had his finger on the pulse of 1950’s Ireland when he wrote this one, the father being the ultimate boss in most Irish households and the welfare, stability and normality of his spouse and children totally dependent on his normality, stability and ability to cope. Perhaps, in light of recent tragedies nothing much has changed since then. We l l d o n e E n n i s c o r t h y Drama, not just for providing town thespians with another marvellous performance on their doorsteps, but for choosing a thought-provoking and very challenging one. – Maria Nolan

Wexford awash with writers! As the first Write By The Sea Festival got underway at Kilmore last month I spoke with local author and Chairperson of the Wexford Literary Festival Carmel harrington who has just launched her fourth novel The Things I Should Have Told You in both Dublin and Wexford, and I put it to her that there must be something in the water in Wexford that keeps churning out wonderful writers. Carmel said that she was both delighted and humbled by the response from readers and fellow writers at her book launch at Dubray Books on Grafton Street on 16th September and equally overwhelmed by the turnout the following day at the Book Centre, Wexford, when fans thronged the venue to show support and purchase signed copies. With fellow author and actress Claudia Carroll performing the formalities in Dublin and former Mayor of Wexford, George Lawlor, looking after proceedings in Wexford, both events were always going to be emotional, entertaining and fun. Claudia Carroll was lavish in her praise for “the next Maeve Binchy” and having been a close friend of the original she said she knew what she was talking about. And George Lawlor wowed the Wexford audience with a most moving rendition of The Green Fields of France – a song that features in the book. If there remained a dry eye in the house following Carmel’s touching speech about family and friends and her reading of a poignant passage from the novel, George Lawlor’s emotive performance put paid to that. Both launches were attended by representatives from Carmel’s publishing house, Harper Collins, and by her American agent, Tracy Brennan, who made the journey specially for the occasion.

Carina Mcevoy is another Wexford writer living in Gorey with her husband, two daughters and a crazy puppy called Samoyed. Thinking life as a stay-at-home mother would be pure luxury, she took a career break from secondary school teaching. However her bubble soon burst when she became a full-time taxi, chef, environmental hygienist, medical practitioner, counsellor, peace negotiator, dietician and general slave to her extremely busy seven and four-year-old! But she wouldn’t have it any other way. After battling severe depression in her younger years, she is now extremely passionate about promoting positive mental health and is eager to work towards a society where the stigma of mental health is extinct and people can feel comfortable reaching out for help. She writes for an honest, open, yet sometimes quite humourous blog The Anxious Banana, which can be seen at www.theanxiousbanana.com. Carina has had a number of poems and articles published in various magazines in the past and has just published her debut novel To Have, Not Hold !, which was launched on Friday 23rd September at Byrne’s Bookstore to a large audience and high acclaim by none other than the Chairperson of Wexford Literary Festival, Carmel Harrington, who described To Have, Not Hold as, “A women’s fictional novel, full of laughter, tears and twists. A tale of serious life issues but told in a humorous way.” To Have, Not Hold tells the story of three remarkable friends, as they each navigate their own catastrophic mess. Discover the strength of friendship while you submerge yourself in suspense, fury and humour. Congratulations to both writers and every success with their new books. – Maria Nolan
New Slaney Writing… New Slaney Writing… easter WeeK 1916 by Noel armstrong This poem was highly commended in the recent Focal Literary Festival Poetry Competition Our chequered histories spotted red, with tragedy and pain. Of famine caused by rotting food, while rich exported grain. Of rebels too who fought and died, the history books relate. From Vinegar Hill to Royal Meath, in darkest ninety-eight.
Our Volunteers, upon that morn, they marched from all around. And set up their headquarters, in the centre of our town. The colleens too, they played their part, they were the brave, the bold. Above the Athenaeum they raised the Green, the White, and Gold.
But now we speak of Easter Week, one hundred years ago. And how they rose, this noble band, to fight a foreign foe. In Dublin town on Sackville Street, to let the world know. The Proclamation, Pearse did read, outside the G.P.O.
With skilful tact, did Colonel French command the British fleet. And with restraint from Volunteers, kept bloodshed off our street. For four long days of standoff, and well the tension grew. Remarkable with no life lost, and casualties so few.

While in the South East of our land, they answered to the call. By Slaney side and Vinegar Hill, they vowed to fight or fall. And once again did strike a blow, to set our country free. And give a voice to one and all, from centre to the sea.
Here's to those noble patriots who made a gallant stand. Who would not yield until they got the note from Pearse's hand. Against the forces of the crown, they fought with all their will. ‘Though sad to say they lost the day, we must revere them still.

Sean Etchingham, Robert Brennan, Seamus Rafter, Seamus Doyle. Michael Delacy and others, led by Galligan so loyal. And of the Cumann Na mBhan, we must remember three. They are Brennan, Stokes, and Comerford, they made our flag fly free.
So let us praise and honour them, despite what sceptics say. Their rising brought this land of ours, to where we are today. May Heaven be their final home above the sky of blue. And may Eire have our counties a united thirty-two. n

BooK lAunch in KillAnnE Author and historian, Gloria Binions, is resident in famed Killanne – she published a history of that area some years to great acclaim. Her new book, Old Blackstairs Families, is about the areas surrounding the Blackstairs Mts and is a compilation of material collected over a period of forty years. The material includes family trees, obituaries, information from newspapers about that area dating from c.1815-1950. Some of the areas covered are Killanne, Rathnure, White Mountain, Kiltealy, and Templeudigan. There are thirty pages of photographs dating from 18691990. Some interesting material relating to the hall and church in Rathnure, and transcription of a letter from Fr. Myles Doran who became the first parish priest of Rathnure in 1853. Copies of interesting documents are included from 1792 and 1798, the signatures of some people who died during the rebellion are contained in the 1797 vestry minute books, courtesy R.C.B. Library. About one hundred names are included in the book, some with just a little information about them others with much more. This publication, which is 104 pages long, is a pot-pourri of very interesting bits and pieces about local townlands and families, and also includes thirty pages of graphics. The book launch takes place on Thursday 13 October at 8.30pm in Killanne Hall (near Rackard's, in the village) and will be launched by Séan Óg Doyle. WExForD county council in PArtnErshiP With south EAst rADio hosts irish PrEmiErE oF ‘DArE to BE WilD’ On Wednesday, September 14, Wexford Omniplex was the venue for the national premiere of ‘Dare to be Wild’, a biopic which tells the inspiring and true story of Mary Reynolds, a young landscape designer from Co. Wexford who, despite huge personal and professional obstacles, won a Gold Medal at the 2002 Chelsea Flower Show. The film’s writer/ director, Vivienne de Courcy is a native of Wexford with a deep connection to her native county. ‘Dare to be Wild’ is a romantic adventure based on the against-all-odds true story of Mary Reynolds, a modern-day heroine. She falls hopelessly in love with a young British botanist Christy Collard and the two environmentalists combine their quest to show the world the power of wild nature – one garden, one vast desert, at a time. Mary’s garden was inspired by her innovative commitment to preserving and re-generating the environment and our wild heritage, an approach which put her at odds with the hidebound conventions of the Chelsea hierarchy but ultimately won the hearts of the judges, the public and Prince Charles himself. In recent times Mary Reynolds has collaborated with Wexford County Council in the design of their wonderful booklet ‘Access for All, Gardens, Parks and Community Spaces’.
