The announced departure of Enniscorthy Municipal District Manager, Padraig O’Gorman, is a significant blow to the town as we head into 2017. Mr O’Gorman’s recent promotion within the ranks of Wexford County Council affords an opportunity to his successor, Liz Hore, to step into what will be a busy role as Enniscorthy faces many challenges as well as significant opportunities over the next few years. Ms Hore is an experienced council official having most recently occupied the position of Wexford County Council Housing Officer. We wish her well as the new Manager of Enniscorthy Municipal District and, as always, the Slaney News will be active in helping Ms Hore promote all that is positive in our great town and district.

Christmas in Enniscorthy enniscorthy municipal district council together with the enniscorthy Business association (eBa) and enniscorthy & district chamber worked hard to make christmas in enniscorthy 2016 one of the best ever. The official Christmas launch at the end of November in Market Square was lit up by Superstars Stage Academy with their lively and enthusiastic performance and they were joined on stage by Bang On’s Jack Frost, Rudey Elf and Artic Fox and Wise Old Owl. But of course it was Santa himself who stole the show in the company of MC Jimmy Gahan. Santa turned on the impressive Enniscorthy Christmas lights and invited Chairman of Enniscorthy & District Council Oliver Walsh and the charming 2016 Strawberry Queen Rebecca O’Connor to join him on stage to do the honours.

T h e c e n t re p i e c e o f Christmas in Enniscorthy was the amazing Santa’s Enchanted Castle which brought thousands of children and adults, both tourists and locals, into the town right up to 23rd December. The Castle was indeed a place of enchantment and one couldn’t help but be carried away by its magic, allure and wonder. Entering it was like stepping onto the pages of all your favourite fairytales. On the tour one met all the usual Christmas characters like Santa, Mrs Claus, the Elves and Ebenezer Scrooge and through the enchanted forest and the underwater tunnel one came across Snow White and some of her dwarfs, Rapunzel in her tower, Little Red Riding Hood calling in on her rather hairy Granny, the Good Fairy who helped put your Christmas wish on the Christmas tree, Elsa and Anna from Frozen singing for you, the Little Mermaid entertaining a

giant Octopus and of course the wicked stepmother completing the collection along with some Disney characters like Mickey & Minnie, Cinderella and her Prince Charming ready for the ball complete with beautifully ornate carriage. Mrs Claus was there to tell each child a story while waiting to visit Santa who even had a selfie mirror in his cosy room. No stone was left unturned to create a truly magical and unforgetable Christmas experience and full marks to all involved in putting it all together and of course to John Reilly, Liam Sharkey and the Rathnure Panto group for their part in making every visitor, young and old, feel and truly “Christmassy”. The town itself was lit better than ever following substantial investment in additional festive lighting which Santa officially turned on on 26th

November. Free Parking for Christmas week in all Enniscorthy Municipal District public carparks together with extended shop opening hours ensured the retail customers of Enniscorthy were well catered for. And thanks to the Enniscorthy Business Association (EBA) Annual Gala Christmas Raffle shoppers were entered in a Free Draw with €2,000 worth of prizes. The EBA Christmas Raffle winners are listed elsewhere on this page. The various choirs performing in the town centre, the funfair entertainment in the

Market Square and the local Transition Year students’ minicompany stalls around the town centre all added to the Christmas atmosphere. Christmas night-time entertainment included two local pantomimes. The long-awaited return of panto in Enniscorthy town, Peter Pan, was put on by the local Enniscorthy Musical Society in The Athenaeum and was a huge success with queues forming outside the Athenaeum to secure tickets leading to its run being sold-out well in advance. The long-standing Rathnure Panto is now so successful they even put on addi-

tional sell-out shows after Christmas for the first time ever. Kilcannon hosted its wonderful Santa’s Magical Kingdom and its successful Christmas Fair during December, and Santa was also in attendance in Beechdale Garden Centre. Various other Christmas events of note included the Christmas Bazaar run by Enniscorthy Gaelscoil, an innovative Christmas Tree Festival in St Mary’s Church, a Christmas Bazaar in the Church Institute and a Crafts, Antiques & Curios Fair in the Athenaeum. n

Re-dedication of Enniscorthy’s WAFER Street Wafer street in enniscorthy town was recently re-dedicated. It was done primarily to correct the spelling of the name Weafer to Wafer on the street plaque. the event was made all the more poignant due to fact that present was captain thomas Wafer's granddaughter moira. captain Wafer has been remembered and honoured for many years in enniscorthy by his fellow citizens. On April 26th this year a delegation led by Mr Paddy Wildes, chairman of the Thomas Wafer Hall, visited the premises of Permanent TSB on O'Connell St, Dublin, where Captain Wafer was shot and killed 100 years ago. He was occupying the then Hibernian Bank on the corner of Lower Abbey Street and Sackville Street. Re-enactors from Enniscorthy Historical Reenactment Society joined members of Enniscorthy Municipal District along with Mr Sean Duffy of Permanent TSB and his staff to commemorate his death. The Enniscorthy street rededication was different

though. This was personal. Personal for one person present – Moira Ridding. Moira, Captain Wafer's granddaughter, had grown up unaware of the high esteem her grandfather was held in Enniscorthy. In July of this year she and her husband Mike were golfing in Wicklow. At the same time she happened to be reading a book Nora Webster by none other then our own Colm Tóibin. In it he mentions Wafer Street. She remembered being told her grandfather was from Enniscorthy so she decided to visit. They stopped into Enniscorthy Castle, the tourism information centre for the town, and came across a book written by Mark O'Brien about her grandfather. She was stunned, she said afterwards. With help from Mary O'Higgins, tour guide and information officer at the Castle, she was able to make contact with Mark O'Brien and subsequently with Paddy Wildes. On this emotional visit home Moira and Mike firstly visited the premises of Permanent TSB in Dublin where she met with manager Sean Duffy. He regaled

her with a wonderful account of how on an evening last April, 30 people from Enniscorthy descended on his bank to honour one of their fallen own and then proceeded to raise the roof with a rendition of Boolavogue! It was something he says he will never forget. From there Moira and Mike travelled to

Enniscorthy where they stayed for two nights in the Riverside Park Hotel. While in Enniscorthy and under the care of Paddy Wildes and the Captain Wafer Hall committee Moira was introduced, in a sense, to her grandfather. I was delighted to take Moira and Mike with me on a short trip

around the town and up to Vinegar Hill. I was even more delighted that as the driver of t h e b u s t h a t b ro u g h t t h e Enniscorthy contingent to Dublin in April that I recorded the event both on video and with photographs and was able to present her with copies to bring back to her sisters and family in England.

Captain Thomas Wafer’s grand-daughter Moira Ridding is presented with a souvenir by Chairman of Enniscorthy Municipal District, Oliver Walsh, in the company of Moira’s husband, Mike, Council officials and members, 1798 Committee members, former TD John Browne, and Enniscorthy re-enactors.

During 2016 there were many events marking various anniversaries of 1916 events. The rededication of Wafer Street event was a little bit more. It reunited a long lost grandfather with his grandchildren and their children. It reunited a family. – Cathy Keane

Apple rumours & predictions 2017

by DaviD pohluDek Ferns compuTer services

2017 marks the 10th anniversary of the iphone, so many are expecting apple to pull out all the stops and release something quite special. iphone Se 2: The first model to appear will be the iPhone SE2 or SEs, replacing the existing (and rather popular) SE that was introduced in March 2016. Expect the new model to be released in the same timeline and feature the existing, classic design, but with upgraded internals such as the A10 chip found in the current iPhone 7 and a more powerful camera. iphone 7S or iphone 8: There has been much discussion over what the new iPhone will be called. Normally Apple would continue its tick-tock rhythm of a new design one year followed by the S version which upgrades only the internals. But the iPhone 7 featured a minimal change to the design of the 6 and 6S, which leads many to think that Apple is saving the big changes for its 10th Anniversary model - the iPhone 8. Perhaps the biggest expected change to the design of the iPhone 8 is the removal of the Home button to allow an edge-to-edge glass display. But what of Apple ID and the fingerprint sensor? Well, there have been several reports that Apple intends to include technology that allows the screen itself to act as a fingerprint sensor, thus removing the need for a physical button. Another feature often found on Android phones is that of wireless charging, and it looks very likely that this will be included on the iPhone 8. Some rumours even suggest the Apple will include long-range wireless charging. ipad mini 5: Given that the iPad Mini 4 was last updated in September 2015, it's clear that Apple isn't too focused on its smaller tablets. This could change in 2017 though as rumours suggest that March could see the introduction of an iPad Mini Pro with upgraded components, a new thinner, tougher aluminium chassis, and the inclusion of a Smart Connector to match that of the other iPad Pro devices. macBook air: With the introduction of the 12-inch MacBook and the new, lightweight 13-inch MacBook Pro the writing seems pretty much on the wall for the old MacBook Air. Apple has already retired the 11-inch model in 2016, and once the 12-inch MacBook gets an update in 2017 to hopefully add an additional USB-C port and upgrade the god-awful keyboard, there won't be much room left for the Air brand. All many of us wanted for the 13-inch model was to get a retina screen and a spec bump, but we suspect that will never happen and the MacBook Air, like the iPad Air, is on the way out. new imacs: The iMac range last saw updates in 2015 that moved the high-end models over to Intel's Skylake processors, and the 21.5in models to Broadwell chips. What 2017 holds in store for the range is still uncertain, as Intel's chipsets seem to be slightly out of step with Apple's demands at the moment. n

enniscorthy athenaeum has gone from strength to strength since opening its doors in 2016 and christmas at the very popular and much loved town venue was full of fun and laughter as enniscorthy musical Society presented the magical panto – peter pan from 8th to 11th december. The Athenaeum also held a Craft, Antiques & Curios Fair for everybody including ardent collectors and antique enthusiasts from 16th December right up to 24th December. Ideal for that special something for under the tree on Christmas morn. In another innovative move the Athenaeum Committee,

THE ENNISCORTHY BROOCH under Secretary Helen Ashdown, has sourced a replica of the famous Enniscorthy Brooch which was found in the ruins of the Abbey at Abbey Square, Enniscorthy, in 1839. The Franciscan Friary had fallen into dereliction after the dissolution of the monasteries in the mid sixteenth century. The ‘Big Wind’ of 1839 brought down the only remaining tower. In the rubble was found this tiny and delicate golden brooch of emeralds and rubies with a Lombardic inscription – ames: amie: aves m par ces preset –

which translates – By this gift you have the friend you love. To whom it belonged we will never know but it came into the possession of Cllr. Cookman

of Bessmount House, Monart, Enniscorthy. He passed it on to Mr Redmond Anthony (17681848) of Piltown, Co. Kilkenny,

Above left: The original Enniscorthy Brooch in the British Museum. Above right: Replica now on sale at the Athenaeum.

for £6 and 10 shillings. Anthony was an innkeeper, collector, art dealer and amateur antiquarian who amassed a considerable private collection of artefacts from the Bronze Age to the medieval period. When he died in 1848, his collection went to auction in London in 200 lots. Several pieces of the Anthony treasure were bought by the British Museum. Among the lots purchased was what we now call the Enniscorthy Brooch. This tiny Enniscorthy treasure remains in the archives

of the British Museum and in 2010 Directors of the Athenaeum travelled to London to view the artefact and have been in touch with the Museum since about the possibility of procuring the brooch on loan for the town of Enniscorthy. But in the meantime – we now have a very good replica which can be purchased at the Athenaeum for a very reasonable €6.50 and is a lovely keepsake of the town for native and tourist alike. Well done Athenaeum and who knows perhaps in the near future we could be viewing the real thing here in Enniscorthy. – Maria Nolan

Young Enniscorthy men raise €18,000 for Cancer Society Jack Kavanagh and William Dunne with an honorary Wexford man on top of Mount Kilimanjaro.

William dunne and Jack Kavanagh are two young enniscorthy men who have scaled great heights in their support of the Irish cancer Society. the pair of 23-yearolds climbed to the “roof of africa” – the top of mount Kilimanjaro in tanzania, last October, and in doing so fundraised the impressive

sum of €18,000. These vital funds will be used by the Irish Cancer Society to help fund life-saving cancer research, as well as providing support and services for people affected by cancer in Ireland. William and Jack wish to thank the many people and businesses who kindly and

generously supported their appeal with donations, spot prizes, etc. On our front cover this issue we include a photo of the cheque presentation to the Irish Cancer Society for €18,000, which took place on Saturday 10th December outside Smyth's Arro store, Rafter St, Enniscorthy. n

a unique photographic exhibition will take place from the 6th to the 8th of January 2017. the exhibition is “Imaging palestine” and the venue is the athenaeum in enniscorthy. the athenaeum was chosen because of its tremendous history and the many synergies that exist between Ireland’s history and that of palestine. Imaging Palestine is a col-

lection of photographs taken during a number of West Bank trips over the past ten years. The trips have given over 400 “ordinary” people, some from Co. Wexford, the opportunity of witnessing first-hand the humanity, dignity, resilience and resistance of the Palestinian people and their desire to live in peace – a just peace. Those who have travelled on these trips do not belong

to any particular organisation, they are just a group of interested and caring people who believe in the Palestinian people’s right to live in peace in their own land. The exhibition will be launched at 8pm on Friday the 6th of January 2017 and will be open 12pm to 5pm on Saturday the 7th January and from 2pm to 5pm on Sunday the 8th of January. Admission is free. n

Mental health services On 2nd december a delegation from Wexford county council met with ms. Helen mcentee td, minister of State for mental Health and Older people, in enniscorthy. the meeting followed a recent resolution of Wexford county council to seek a meeting with the minister to discuss mental health services in county Wexford. Wexford County Council was represented on a crossparty basis by Cllr Willie Fitzharris, Cllr Willie Kavanagh, Cllr Johnny Mythen and Cathaoirleach of the Council, Cllr Paddy Kavanagh, who chaired the meeting. M r. P a u l K e h o e , T D , Minister of State with Responsibility for Defence, Mr. Michael D'Arcy TD, and Mr. James Brown TD also attended the meeting with Minister McEntee, who was accompa-

nied by a number of senior HSE officials. Discussions during the twohour meeting centred on the need for the provision of a 24/7 mental health service in Co. Wexford, with members of the delegation pointing to Wexford’s very high number of suicides as evidence of the immediate need for a 24/7 service to be located within the county. It was pointed out to the Minister that a locally available service would work much better than the current out-ofcounty service and was more likely to meet the needs of the community, as a County Wexford-based service would be far easier to access while those in need of the service would have more opportunity to avail of the support of their family and friends. The requirement for additional targeted programmes to

be provided through schools and through voluntary organisations was also emphasised during the meeting. Minister McEntee thanked those attending for their contribution and assured the members that she was committed to working towards achieving the aims of the delegation. ––––––––––––––––––––––––––– a new mental health booklet and website for teenagers has been produced by the pupils of coláiste Bríde, enniscorthy. entitled 'I am WORTH it' (WOrtH stands for Wexford Offers reliable teenage Help), it was launched by minister Helen mcentee. It gives practical information and advice about mental health care, and the various services and supports available throughout co. Wexford. congrats to all involved in this wonderful initiative. n

‘Children of Lir’ to appear in Wexford Opera House The National Opera House in Wexford is set to be the scene for the staging of the 44-yearold celtic concert composition of ‘The Children of Lir’ on February 3rd and 4th, 2017. The contemporary composer and musician behind the now ‘collector’s item’ record ‘The Children of Lir’ celtic concert is staging the event in Wexford with his brother Paud O’Reilly and their band, ‘Loudest Whisper’ one of Ireland’s most successful and longest established groups. Their distinctive blend of folk/rock and blues is renowned not only in Ireland and the UK but also in North America. A string quartet, a choir of 100 voices plus a narrator and four ballerinas will join the group for this concert. Brian O’Reilly first staged

his musical rendition of ‘The Children of Lir’ in January 1973. It was an immediate success and heralded as Ireland’s first Folk Opera. ‘The Children of Lir’ has been enjoyed by over 25,000 people all over the world, since it was first performed by the group in 1973, it was so successful, Polydor Records picked up on it and signed ‘Loudest Whisper’ to make an album of the music. Ireland’s first concept album ‘The Children of Lir’ was issued in 1975 and this is now a collector’s item. With each staging of The Children of Lir over the years came new and innovative ideas both for the work itself and for its production. Due to its tremendous success, in 2005 Sunbeam Records UK contacted Brian O’Reilly regarding a re-issue of

the 1975 album ‘The Children of Lir’ on vinyl. Following a meeting in London, the O’Reilly brothers Paud and Brian were happy with Sunbeam’s offer. ‘The Children of Lir’ was re-mastered in Abbey Road and a limited edition of the album on 180g virgin vinyl was issued in 2006. This edition was also a sell out. According to the composer Brian O’Reilly, the upcoming concert will be one of the more creative and magical homegrown presentations that Ireland has seen in a long while. “The concert is a unique mystical Celtic experience, the music is hauntlingly lyrical and spiritual, yet in idiom it is contemporary and vital in a recognisable Celtic style.” This unique concert, which will be performed three times over the period of Friday, February 3rd and Saturday, February 4th, has choirs from two local schools in Wexford who will have the opportunity to showcase their talents. The team behind the Celtic concert have been working with a 20strong male local choir, the 9 musicians of Loudest Whisper, two school choirs, the Loreto Convent and Selskar Abbey School of Wexford, a string quartet and narrator all under the baton of young, vibrant conductor Fergal O'Connor. In total 120 people will perform this

At the announcment of the ‘The Children of Lir’ celtic concert: Sorcha Finn, Holly Johnston, Hannah Scully and Carla Fusciardi Wallace from the Wexford School of Ballet who will all perform as ‘The Children of Lir’ swans at the concert which will take place at the National Opera House in Wexford on February 3rd and 4th 2017. magical mystical concert of 'The Children of Lir'. Four Ballerinas from the Wexford School of Ballet have also auditioned to take roles depicting the story of the ‘The Children of Lir’ on stage and Sharon Clancy will narrate the concert. The event is taking place as part of Wexford’s cultural celebration of the 1916 centenary. ‘The Children of Lir’ Celtic Concert will be performed at

the National Opera House on 3rd and 4th of February 2017, with a matinee at 12 noon on February 3rd and an 8pm concert on both February 3rd and 4th. Further information and tickets see www.nationaloperahouse.ie or call 053 912 2144. The Children of Lir is an ancient Irish allegory that describes the persona of Ireland in a mythological sense where

symbolism and ritual overwhelmed and minimised indiv i d u a l p e r s o n a l i t y. T h e centrepiece of the legend is that love, sorrow and betrayal transmigrate from humans to birds. In the case of The Children of Lir the birds happen to be swans. The swan metaphor reflects freedom, beauty, jealousy and everlasting youth as well as perhaps eternal silence. n

If there was ever a doubt about the level of musical talent in the town of Enniscorthy it was well and truly dispelled on Wednesday 21st December as three of our town choirs came together in the majestic Cathedral of St. Aidan for a beautiful and nostalgic Christmas Carol Service the brainchild of Chamber President John Burke O’Leary and Fathers Odhran Furlong and Billy Swan. Enniscorthy Choral Society, Enniscorthy Gospel Choir and St. Aidan’s Cathedral Choir delighted the large congregation with such old and treasured favourites as Adeste Fideles, Silent Night, O Holy

Night, White Christmas, Mary’s Boy Child and the much loved Enniscorthy Christmas Carol along with the less well known Verbum Caro, Who Is This Tiny King and On Christmas Night. Maire Mhac an tSaoi’s poignant poem Oiche Nollag was eloquently delivered in both Irish and English by Mick Dee and Maria Clifford. The festive evening was brought to glorious conclusion by Colm O`Tiarnaigh conducting all three Choirs and the Cathedral audience in a rousing rendition of Ding Dong Merrily on High! A beautifu occasion. – Maria Nolan

Enniscorthy’s Christmas Tree Festival St. Mary’s and indeed the Reverend Nicola Halford have excelled themselves with the innovative creation of Enniscorthy’s inaugural Christmas Tree Festival. And anyone viewing the collec-

tion of wondrous trees at St. Mary’s will be certain, as I am, that it may be the first but definitely won’t be the last. As you opened the door of St. Mary’s and peered inside you were immediately overwhelmed by the beauty and splendour of this magical Festival telling the story of Christmas and the story of the community of Enniscorthy through the medium and wonder of Christmas trees. Each tree was uniquely made or decorated to tell the story of the individual business, organistation, charity, church, school or group that it represented. With contributions from the Gospel Choir, CWCW, Irish Country Markets, the Musical Society, C&R Print, Stafford Butchers, the

Delightful Dollies, Enniscorthy Rugby and Golf Clubs, St. Aidan’s Cathedral, Monart Sunday School, St. Mary’s and St. Patrick’s National Schools, St. Senan’s and St. Aidan’s National Schools, the British Legion, Barnardos and many, many more the Enniscorthy community certainly embraced this concept and bought into the Festival sponsored by Wexford County Council, Wheelock Fruits, Smyth’s Hardware, Cooney’s Bakery, Noel & June Hayden, David Murphy, The Kiosk, Abbey Square and Enniscorthy Rugby and Golf Clubs. My particular favourites were the fabulously imaginative pieces from Millinery Madness, creating a mannequin and decorating with beautiful hats, Monageer 1916 and Enniscorthy

Historical Re-enactment’s coming together to create the poignant piece that aptly commemorates the year that was, hands across the divide – the inspirational piece from St. Aidan’s, the most appropriate piece from Furlong’s Tyreworld, the really attractive and very possibly marketable pieces from CWCW and HOPE and the Tree of Life created from the books of the Bible, and finally the memory tree where each person can remember someone at Christmas by adding their name to the Memory Tree. Well done to St. Mary’s and Reverend Halford. This Festival is a winner and appealed to all, regardless of age or gender, evoking and creating memories and giving all that Christmas feeling. – Maria Nolan

Wexford at the RDS Blaithin Ennis at the Design & Craft Fair at the RDS Pic: Maria Nolan.

Wexford was to the fore at the annual Design & Craft Fair in the RDS in December. With thousands of visitors over the four-day popular event it was good to come across two talented and lovely ladies from Wexford, Gorey fashion designer Kabira Allain reporting a lot of interest in her Kymaia brand particularly her latest collection of stunning capes, and jewellery designer Blaithin Ennis

who had them queuing at her stand to ogle and admire her exquisite pieces. Both ladies were delighted with both the footfall and the success of the event and the interest and media attention in their designs in recent times with both appearing in fashion magazines, fashion shows and on Nationwide and Xpose. – Maria Nolan

Irish singer/songwriter Mundy is one of a number of artists to successfully make the transition from street busking in Dublin to international stardom during the ’90s. Mundy’s mainly acoustic, folk-based pop/rock has been compared to Damien Rice and Josh Ritter; however, his style is more upbeat and celebratory than either, and his jangle pop influence and tendency to experiment with unconventional sonic textures and beats further distinguishes him.

MUNDY

28 January The Presentation Centre Enniscorthy

With Mundy’s brand new single ‘Shot In The Dark’, the popular artist gives us a taste of his sixth studio album, which is due for release on 10th April. Mundy has teamed up with Youth, who produced his debut album, the critically acclaimed Jellylegs in 1996. Jellylegs yielded such hit songs ‘Gin and Tonic Sky’ ‘Life’s A Cinch’ and ‘To You I Bestow’ which featured on the soundtrack for Baz Luhrmann’s Romeo & Juliet.

liam Ó maonlaí & cormac BeGley 12 Jan – Music Hothouse Flowers frontman Liam Ó Maonlaí and concertina player Cormac Begley are on a 4-date tour. Cormac Begley hails from a wellknown musical family on the Dingle Peninsula. He is the founder of Airt School and the award-winning ‘Tunes in the Church’ live concert series in Galway and Dublin. Over the last few years, the pair have performed together in acclaimed band Ré. They’ve toured all over Ireland and further afield including Sydney, Hong Kong, Singapore and New Zealand. –––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––– visionaries 20 Jan – Music Visionaries: Songs and Music from the pens of Connolly, Pearse, Ceannt, and Plunkett. Visionaries echoes the deep interest in music, culture, and art, held by Ireland’s most inspired cultural and political leaders on its road to independence. An extension of the acclaimed 1916: Visionaries and their Words, which premièred in Dublin, in January 2016, to standing ovations, and played throughout Ireland and in France; Visionaries gives a most intriguing insight into the most intimate thoughts of the architects of the Easter Rising. This concert features male, female, and children's voices to commemorate the aspirations of The Easter Proclamation. Featuring the voices of Lorcán Mac Mathúna and Íde Nic Mhathúna (voice and concertina); Martin Tourish (accordion), Daire Bracken (fiddle, guitar), Eamonn Galdubh (uillean pipes, saxophone, flute, bodhrán); and the acting talents of Elaine O’Dea.

WOLFF 21 Jan – Music STANDING EVENT – THIS IS AN ALL AGES SHOW A busy port town in Ireland's South East is the last place you'd expect such a fearless, dark and raw sound to emerge from. Blending the power & fire of traditional blues with trashy garage rock riffs and in-your-face vocals, WOLFF strikes a shadowy figure. Like the lyric says 'You can sleep when you're dead & done' and it looks like this beast is just waking up. The past year has seen WOLFF go from strength to strength with standout performances at Other Voices, Electric Picnic and a triumphant headline show at the Wexford Spiegeltent Festival. –––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––– fred & alice 26 Jan – Drama With over 130 performances to date Fred & Alice, one of the biggest hits of 2013 and 2014, is back on tour with CallBack theatre. Written by John Sheehy, performed by Ciaran Bermingham and Cora Fenton. ít’s not easy to get by in this crazy old world is it? But Fred and Alice have discovered that all you really need are two tennis rackets, disproportionate reactions to minor accidents, an immature coping strategy and each other. Fred and Alice first met in the home. It wasn’t really a home but Fred always called it a home because that was where he lived, and if you are not living at home then where are you? It was love at first sight for Alice. Fred didn’t talk to her again for years but then eventually Fred got used to her and it was love at first sight for him too. From their days in care, to independent living, Fred and Alice negotiate the perils and pitfalls of life and love. Come see this joyous celebration of individuality. “Whirling Comedy” - The Irish Times ––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––– Plus lots of workshops, classes, childen’s activities, Christmas events – see www.wexfordartscentre.ie for details.

New Year, New You! Fransens Byrne Chiropractic would like to wish you a happy New Year. After all the holiday indulgences it is time to get back to a healthy lifestyle again. We feel there are three important areas of interest: Firstly: Get your back checked by a chiropractor, the spine houses an important part of your central nervous system – the Spinal Cord, which controls many functions in your body. Optimal spinal health is therefore important for optimal general health. Secondly: Don’t go on a crash diet, but make healthier food choices. This generally means less sugar, less processed foods, less meat, more fish, more fruit and vegetables. Thirdly: Move more! Any exercise will do, so choose something enjoyable. Walking, cycling, working out at the gym, playing golf, it does not matter, as long as you move more. To maximise your chance of long term success, start 2017 by setting yourself achievable health goals.

Because we would love to help you get started, we are offering FREE SPINAL HEALTH CHECkS ON SATuRDAY 14TH JANuARY! To book in a spinal health check or an appointment, please give us a call on 053-9192962 or send an email to info@fransensbyrnechiropractic.ie

Eat Healthy, Live Healthy! Enniscorthy and District Chamber ended the year on a high with yet another new and exciting event as they hosted the Happy Pear - David and Stephen Flynn at the Riverside Park Hotel on Thursday 22nd December for a healthy alternative to the traditional over indulgence of the festive season. Ever since its humble beginnings as a vegetable shop, The Happy Pear’s mission has been to start a food revolution by motivating and inspiring people to eat healthy and live healthy. And if the looks, antics, passion and energy of the Flynn twins couldn`t motivate or inspire you to a healthier diet then nothing could. In tee-shirts and shorts looking the epitomy of health, they leaped, pranced and danced around the stage delighting the 300-strong audience as they enthused about their wonderful food and their healthy and successful lifestyles. Cooking fast and furious they dished up Pad Thai, Vegetable Wellington and a most delicious Chocolate Cake. Over the years, David and Stephen’s simple message of eat more veg, and knowledge about what to eat to become healthier, and how to prepare good food so that it tastes great, has led to them becoming educators and

thought leaders about eating and living healthy lives. Their first book – the Yellow Book has now sold over 100,000 copies and was the best-selling cookbook of 2014 and 2015 and their latest book – the Blue Book was recently awarded the Avondale Cookbook of the Year at the Book Awards 2016. The health and vitality of the pair speaks for itself and their good humour and happy demeanour is infectious. They are entertaining to listen to and their amusing double-act could be described as a culinary Jedward. They market themselves and their food extremely well, and their time for and interest in people is impressive, long after the demonstration ended they were still signing books, posing for photographs and chatting comfortably with all who approached them. The news that the Chamber is bringing them back to Enniscorthy for November 2017 was announced by VicePresident Maree Lyng and met with major approval. Maree also announced that over €1,000 had been raised at the half-time draw for Hospice Homecare, making the occasion a most beneficial event indeed. – Maria Nolan

Enniscorthy Historical Re-enactment Society and relatives at Market Square. Pic: Maria Nolan.

And So It Ends Enniscorthy Historical Reenactment Society (EHRS) brought the momentous year to its final conclusion on Saturday 17th December at Market Square with a dignified and fitting tribute to the men and women who shaped our history as they commemorated the Homecoming of Christmas 1916. Twenty-eight Volunteers returned to Enniscorthy on Christmas Eve 1916, having spent eight months interned in British prisons far away from their families, friends and their town.

On Saturday members of EHRS gathered at Enniscorthy Train Station to mark that return complete with Welcome Home banners and brown paper parcels tucked under their arms, and walked across the new bridge and up Castle Hill waving and shouting to amused onlookers, ‘We’re home! We’re home!’ Stopping at the Athenaeum, a wreath was laid by Paul Murphy to all who had spent those five fateful days there one hundred years before. At Market Square EHRS member Graham Cadogan

began proceedings with a poem about the Homecoming penned by local bard Paudge Kehoe and invited Sean Og Doyle, President of the 1916 Commemoration Committee, to lay a wreath at the ‘98 Monument and address the crowd of re-enactors and relatives of the Enniscorthy Volunteers some of whom were holding photographs of their heroic family members. Sean gave a brief history of the event and commended EHRS for the tremendous effort they put into all of the events of 1916. Attending eighty-five events in all in

various parts of the county and country Sean said that they have borne themselves with dignity and pride and their meticulous attention to detail in their attire and historical fact was exemplary deserving of both recognition and acclaim. Chairman of EHRS, Ray Murphy, then made a presentation to Sean Og Doyle thanking him for all the support and encouragement throughout the year before calling on Piper Liam Doyle to conclude the ceremony with the National Anthem. – Maria Nolan

AGM & Commemoration Booklet

Enniscorthy re-enactors to the fore

The AGM of Enniscorthy Historical Re-enactment Society was held on Tuesday 6th December at 8pm at the Athenaeum. In his Chairman`s Address Ray Murphy complimented the group saying that they had participated in eighty-five events in over thirteen different counties during the year and not alone were they extremely well turned out on each and every occasion but conducted themselves with dignity and decorum at all events.

Enniscorthy Historical Reenactment Society were delighted to be asked by the Kilcoole 1916 Commemoration Committee to participate in the unveiling of a commemorative plaque in November to the memory of local Volunteer Capt. Robert Monteith and the 1914 Kilcoole gun-running episode. And they were even more delighted that one of the group, David Owens, was carrying a Single Shot Mauser rifle that came onshore at Kilcoole in 1914 – part of the 600-strong

He thanked Enniscorthy Municipal District Council and Town Manager Padraig O`Gorman, Sean Og Doyle, Cathy Keane, Wexford Co. received the Wicklow Man of the Year Award in recognition of his wonderful contribution to 2016, and he had special mention for Frank Murphy and all who had assisted with drilling and training both locally and at Collins Barracks, Dublin. Secretary’s Report and Treasurer’s Report followed with Secretary thanking all who had assisted her, and Treasurer’s Report detailing all income and expenditure for the 2016 period. The following were elected to the 2017 Committee – Chair Ray Murphy, Vice Chair Paul Murphy, Secretary Bridget Murphy, Asst. Secretary Margaret O`Neill, Treasurer Peter Freeman, Asst. Treasurer Tim Corrigan, PRO Maria Nolan and Quarter Master Graham Cadogan. One of the highlights of the AGM was the presentation to all members of a commemorative booklet compiled by PRO Maria Nolan recording events attended by the members in 2016. One of these commemorative booklets will be presented to the Athenaeum to be placed in a sealed Time Capsule to be opened at the 125th or 150th Anniversary celebrations.

consignment of German-made rifles along with 20,000 rounds of ammunition. Most definitely living history at its best. On Sunday 4th December Enniscorthy Re-enactment Society was part of the Homecoming Re-enactment marking the return home of the Volunteers from Frongoch Prison for Christmas 1916. Re-enactment groups from around the country gathered at Pearse Street Railway Station or the old Westland Row and led by pipers walked to the Mansion House. – Maria Nolan

2016 – A Centenary Year to Remember

Enniscorthy Historical Re-enactment Society, who were praised by Sean Doyle in his speech below, were proud to be asked by County Council Chairman Paddy Kavanagh to form a guard of honour at the opening of an exhibition of beautiful drawings by Countess Markievicz at Wexford County Council. The re-enactors are pictured with councillors and officials: Eamon Hore, Tom Enright, Cllr Barbara Anne Murphy, Prof. Kevin Whelan, Cllr Paddy Kavanagh and John Carley.

As a final look-back on the hugely successful commemorations of 1916 we include here a major speech by Sean Doyle, President of County Wexford 1916 Centenary Committee, at the last meeting of the Centenary Committee. On the 13th April 2006, a Committee was formed to set in motion the commemoration of the Centenary of the 1916 Rising. Present at the meeting were Nicky Furlong, Bernard Browne, Peter Byrne, Henry Goff, Eddie Breen, Seán Doyle, Keith Doyle, Pádraig O’Gorman and Donal Minnock. The organising of annual seminars was the immediate aim and as the Centenary Year drew closer to augment the Committee to embrace the county at large and organise the Centenary Ceremonies. We know their dream; enough To know they dreamed and are dead;

And what if excess of love Bewildered them till they died? I write it out in a verse – MacDonagh and MacBride And Connolly and Pearse Now and in time to be, Wherever green is worn, Are changed, changed utterly. The final lines from the famous poem by W. B. Yeats, written in September 1916. Some lines from Anthony Cronin’s poem commissioned to honour the Centenary of the Rising in Enniscorthy: Suddenly there is news Sinn Féin Volunteers have taken over the town. They have closed the bars And closed the banks, put them under armed guards, There is marching and counter marching, Cheering and counter cheering. Up Slaney Street to Market Square, Down Castle Hill to Slaney Place. They have raised a tricolour over the Athenaeum,

The town’s least utilitarian building. The RIC withdraw to barracks Carefully locking the door behind them. Not a shot is fired. It is not tragic. Nor can we set the names To rhyme against each other as could Yeats, There is no Pearse and nothing here To half rhyme with verse. I cannot rhyme Etchingham with Toibín, Only alas Rafter with after. The thoughts expressed in poetry by two of Ireland’s famous writers, one from Sligo and the other a native of Enniscorthy. One poem written one hundred years ago and the other penned this centenary year. It is only fitting that great writers should contemplate and reflect on momentous events that shaped modern Ireland. Since the seminal event in Irish history, the 1916 Rising,

many poets and writers have put their thoughts and opinions on paper and with modern technology the social media has absorbed many different views of the Rising. Many books dealing with the rising in County Wexford were published this year and all added greatly to our knowledge of the history of the Rising in the county and of the taking over of Enniscorthy on the morning of Thursday, the 27th April 1916. We have spent most of the year so far in commemorating the men and women who in a different Ireland one hundred years ago took on the might of the British Empire to achieve freedom, independence and democracy, an achievement dreamed of for years by countless generations. County Wexford people are honoured that our county has a prominent chapter in the annals of the

struggle for Irish freedom and independence that has left an indelible imprint on the archives of historic events. I’m not going to detail the actions and activities of the Rising – we have our histories to study. Great credit is due to all the members of the 1916 Centenary Commemoration Committee for their dedication and support for all the events organised during the year and particular credit is owed to you for steering completely clear of party politics. The efforts of a number of local committees throughout the county who organised many events to honour the Rising, t h e Tr i c o l o u r a n d t h e Proclamation, must be lauded and appreciated We must not forget the presence at many functions of the Enniscorthy Historical Re-enactment Society, both in County Wexford and in other parts of

Ireland. Their presentation was always professional and performed with dignity. After the initial faux pas at the Official Launch of the Centenary Commemoration, the Official State Department responsible recovered well and supported county committees throughout the country. It must be acknowledged that their generous financial contribution led to the refurbishment of The Athenaeum, which is being officially re-opened today. The highpoint of our tribute to the men and women who attempted to wrest our freedom from the grasp of a mighty empire took place in Enniscorthy on Easter Monday the 28th March. The town was thronged and they witnessed ceremonies staged with great solemnity and pride. It was our valiant effort to pay tribute to a noble sacrifice against great odds. – Sean Doyle

The new food pyramid The Department of Health recently announced new healthy eating guidelines and a new food pyramid, which stresses eating fruit and vegetables over carbohydrates like bread. The guidelines are aimed at providing advice on a balanced diet to the general public, and advise limiting high fat, sugar and salty foods to no more than once or twice a week. The combined recommendation for fruit and vegetables has been increased to between five and seven servings per day. Fruit and vegetables now comprise the largest shelf on the food pyramid. Conversely the range of servings for carbohydrates has been reduced to between three and five a day for everyone – except “active males”. The amount of wholemeal cereals and breads, potatoes, pasta and rice has been reduced and white bread is not present in the pyramid at all. The new food pyramid brings Irish advice closer to the Harvard Food Pyramid, which pioneered the original idea. At the launch of the new healthy food guidelines, Minister of State for Health

Promotion Marcella Corcoran Kennedy said: “This new suite of resources will provide very useful practical nutrition advice for the population, healthcare professionals and for those working in other sectors such as education, social protection and industry. “As a country, many of us do not have a balanced diet for a variety of reasons and my first priority is to make this nutrition advice available for the population.” The Department of Health has said that Irish adult and childhood nutrition surveys over the past 10 years show that eating habits are not con-

sistent with optimal health, with too much consumption of foods high in sugar, fat and salt. Ireland has the highest average body mass index in the EU, and a quarter of our population is technically obese. The government has announced a sugar tax, but it will not come into effect until 2018. The government’s new healthy eating guidelines also include advice on portion sizes, plus daily meal plans for children and adults as well as a range of information sheets on different parts of the food pyramid. n

Enniscorthy food to the fore at fair Enniscorthy was to the fore at the annual Design & Craft Fair in the RDS, Dublin, before Christmas. A product that appeared to be doing extremely well and generating a lot of interest and sales was the new yogurt product from Enniscorthy’s Killowen – Pro U. The brainchild of Jane and Michael Murphy who recognised the need for specialised nutritional products for consumers to invest in their longer term bone and muscle health. This wonderful product combines the best of Irish dairy ingredients to deliver a yogurt that tastes good and does good. ‘Pro U is high in calcium, protein and Vitamin D to help maintain normal bones and muscle as you age and is specifically designed to help keep you active for longer,’ according to Michael and judging by the throng of people around his stand on the Sunday I visited this new yogurt in flavours of strawberry, raspberry, mango & passion fruit along with natural is going down well with the general public and is a l r e a d y i n Te s c o a n d SuperValu and other stores. – Maria Nolan

As a Wellness Coach I meet a lot of people who eat food from packets and consume readymade meals and I know from meeting these people that convenience has come at a very very high cost for people. Generally people want to improve and change their lives but the one thing they often have ‘no time for’ is the extra consideration required around their food. ‘Investment in Wexford continues to suffer’ – Browne James Browne TD

Fianna Fáil TD for Wexford James Browne says Fine Gael is failing to kick-start the economy of the South-East in favour of investment in the Greater Dublin Region. New figures released to Fianna Fáil reveal that there have only been 10 IDA site visits to Wexford in 2015 and 2016. In contrast, there were 446 visits in Co. Dublin over the same period. Deputy Browne explained, “There has been a complete vacuum of investment in SouthEast over the past 5 years, and this pattern is continuing under

the new Minister for Jobs Mary M i t c h e l l O ’ C o n n o r. T h e Government is seemingly preoccupied on attracting investment to Dublin and the surrounding commuter counties, while allowing the regions to lag behind. “Counties like Wexford have been all but ignored by the IDA. There have only been 10 site visits to Co. Wexford over the past 2 years. This is having an impact on job creation as potential investors are not being attracted into Wexford. It’s no surprise that the unemploy-

ment rate in the South-East is 10.4%, significantly higher than the 7.7% for the rest of the country. “The economic difficulty we are experiencing in the South East also highlights the need for additional educational facilities in the region. I firmly believe that we need to put in place a university for the South-East to allow Wexford and surrounding counties to thrive. We need to ensure the necessary infrastructure is developed to allow the South East reach its maximum economic potential.”n

Virgin Media also announced at the event that it has switched on Free Public WiFi on Market S q u a re , g i v i n g c i t i z e n s i n Enniscorthy the freedom to benefit from Virgin Media’s investment in fibre broadband. District Chamber of Commerce welcomes Virgin Media to the Enniscorthy business community and as a new member of the chamber. Quality broadband infrastructure and media services are critical to attracting busi-

nesses and talent, so we are delighted to note that the broadband download speeds of up to 400Mbps, which are now available in Enniscorthy, are among the very best in Ireland. VET DIARY FOR JAN with the Moyne Veterinary Clinic

Joe Kavanagh, among other things, looks at dog food and nutrition. It’s a new year, a new beginning and as we get moving in January it brings lots of pep in our step. The wonderful madness leading up to Christmas, rushing about getting presents, meeting old friends and family, it’s a very special time. Then there's the days off post Christmas and then New Year’s just gives you a chance to 'come up for air' and chillax. The days have been beautiful, sunny, mild and calm. It just invites you to get out in Nature, walk the dog(s), head to the park, woods or beach. I reckon we're steeped in luck here in Wexford as we're close to the beach, mountains and lots of walks about. Even the days that we might have had a late one the night before – it’s the animals that'll get us out and going as will the kids. They know the magic of Nature and what it does for us… clears the head, renews the soul and brightens our hearts to see and be out in the sunny, crisp, frosty mornings. The enthusiasm of the dogs to get going is enough to shake ourselves into action. The ads for the supermarkets have switched now to 'get fit' mode, new beginnings, resolutions… one of the best ways to get fit is from the 'inside'... i.e. eating the proper food. It’s the same for the animals. The way forward to having a healthy pet is through proper nutrition. The better dog foods have much better grades of protein, fats, carbs but much more so they've a way better digestibility. That’s the real difference and so because of this they eat much less so it goes much further but more importantly they have lots of the essential building blocks to keep 'em healthy.

If you own a dog or dogs you are required under the Control of Dogs Act, 1986-2010 to do the following: Keep your dog under control at all times, this means the dog cannot leave your property unaccompanied and you must make sure it is securely kept in at night.

Ensure that all dogs under your control wear a collar bearing an identity tag with the name, address and contact details of the owner at all times. Some breeds such as Alsatians, Rottweilers, Japanese Akitas etc. must be securely on a lead and muzzled in public.

Each dog you own must have a licence or a general licence to cover all dogs in your possession.

Owners of dogs that have worried sheep will be obliged to pay compensation once they are traced.

Dog owners should also remember that farmers are legally permitted to shoot dogs straying onto their land.

For more information phone 053 9196313 or email environment@wexfordcoco.ie n

The old adage: 'You are what you eat' goes for them as well as us!! And don't be fooled by a food that's being advertised very often… the good ones that don't advertise spend the money on the ingredients not on marketing… food for thought eh? So next time your guide and companion turns up his/her nose at what’s dished up in front of them they might be telling you more than you think! Next time you're in we'll give you some pointers about best nutrition. In the meantime, we wish all our readers and customers a magical new year. It’s gonna be a good 'un!! n

View from the Hill 2017 Well here we are already into 2017. As the years roll by each twelve months seems to come around at a faster pace. What’s in store for us in 2017 we wonder? Will it be a better year than 2016. Hopefully so. Many people are still in the doldrums after a recession which still hasn’t gone away. There is a small recovery out there but to be honest it is totally distorted by stories from the capital and surrounds of high property prices, booming pubs and restaurants and mad retail spending. Towns like Enniscorthy are still in the queue when it comes to an economic uplift but it is on the way. The signs are there with good activity around the Christmas time and during the sales so hopefully on that front things

will be better in 2017 than in previous years. That of course is totally different to the position of many individuals who ran into difficulty over the past number of years. In many cases it is only now that banks and other financial institutions are beginning to pursue these unfortunate people in earnest with a vigour that causes serious worry to those on the receiving end. For these people talk of recovery sounds hollow and rather than having to listen to economists and other so-called experts telling them that, “Aw well we all overspent as a nation”, they need help. Forget the selfish attitude that, “We didn’t get into trouble so why should we help those who did” and adopt the practical approach that

as long as that terrible debt is on people’s shoulders spending power in the economy is severely diminished and we are all held back. Large business organisations get hundreds of millions of debt written off every year, which you and I pay for through our tax euros going to bail out the banks. The time has come now for a concentrated effort to assist the little people and get rid of some of their debt. All in all hopefully 2017 will be a better year for everyone and let’s look forward to it. 2017 PolitiCs Will 2017 be the year of a general election? According to what we are told the agreement between Fianna Fail and the Coalition is destined to run for another two years. It’s extremely difficult to see that being the case. The government is so weak that it finds it almost impossible to get any legislation through the Dail and is effectively only a caretaker administration. The main danger to this government is as likely to come from within as it is to come from Fianna Fail. Any administration depending on the likes of Shane Ross, Finian McGrath and Katherine Zappone is on a hiding to nothing. These people have agendas which are so diverse from each other and Fine Gael that it’s only a matter of time before someone pulls the plug on some obscure issue that we haven’t even thought of yet. Fianna Fail will of

course sit back and wait for the appropriate moment to bring the curtain down and will be over the moon if Ross, McGrath or Zappone do it for them. If there is to be an election in 2017 what will happen in Wexford one wonders. This column has already, some months ago, predicted the outcome of the next general election in this constituency. If we go to the polls this year it is the humble opinion of this scribe that the outcome will be something like this. Fianna Fail will get two seats, but only if they forget this ridiculous notion of gender balance and so on and put up the right candidates. James Browne will of course be their main candidate and barring accident should be elected. Nothing is certain of course and you can be sure that the Browne supporters in Fianna Fail are more than aware of that. If the party has any sense their second candidate should be Michael Sheehan of New Ross. Sheehan was effectively shafted last time out but this has not in any way diminished his enthusiasm for a shot at Dail Eireann. He is working extremely hard across the New Ross district and his championing of the old age pension issue has brought him support from across the county. He is a practical politican who is not interested in pie and the sky issues but concentrates on matters which affect constituents on a day to day basis. Fine Gael will have a real dif-

ficulty in keeping two seats in Wexford. The growing discontent with the party generally and the fact that any government deputy is going to have an uphill struggle will have an effect. Both Paul Kehoe and Michael D’Arcy are extremely hard-working members of the Oireachtas with the legendary D’Arcy machine in the Gorey area going at full throttle since the last election. Paul Kehoe is really up against it in Enniscorthy with both James Browne and Johnny Mythen of Sinn Fein likely to pull huge numbers of votes on his doorstep. It has to be said that the particular job that Kehoe has at present doesn’t help as it tends to take him out of the constituency a lot while D’Arcy is beavering away in the background. However Paul is not to be underestimated. I get regular reports that he is delivering the goods to his constituents. It is said that once you approach him he will follow up any case and even if the response is not what you want he will without fail get back to you. All these thing count on election day. Sinn Fein should get Johnny Mythen over the line this time. This will probably be at the expense of Mick Wallace who really cannot afford to drop another thousand votes on his last performance when he went down from 13,300 to 7,700 approx. And that’s sort of ironic because of all the TDs who ever sat in the Dail, Wallace is about the only one who actually did what

TDs are supposed to do i.e. expose matters of national importance and concentrate on them rather that serve constituents’ individual needs. Brendan Howlin will retain the Labour seat once again. This is a bit of a mystery seeing that he above all others drove the austerity policies of the previous government which affected so many. However his achievements in delivering huge infrastructure projects for Wexford overrode that and saw him head the poll last time out. Cllr Paddy Kavanagh Best wishes to Paddy Kavanagh who suffered a slight health setback over the Christmas period. We believe that Paddy is out and about again now doing what he does best. Paddy is a good old-fashioned county councillor. Those of us of a certain age have little time for the politically correct breed of politicans around today. Paddy is not one of them. He speaks his mind, tells it as it is and if you don’t like it you can lump it. We need more Paddy Kavanaghs in local politics in Ireland but I’m afraid we’ll have to look a long way to find a match for Paddy. Long may he serve the people of his beloved Enniscorthy. n We are often asked: Who is the “View from the Hill” columnist? All we can say is that the author’s surname is NOT Doyle!

the leader of the Fianna Fail Party, Micheál Martin, was in Castletown on sunday 11th december to pay tribute to local hero liam Mellows. Following Mass celebrated by Canon Cosgrave, Mr. Martin marched with local politicians, Enniscorthy Historical Re-enactment Society and the 1916 Monageer Volunteers to the nearby graveyard where he unveiled a stone to the memory of Liam Mellows before giving a most detailed and passionate oration at his grave. The Fianna Fail leader’s admiration for Mellows was obvious saying that despite being the ultimate outsider coming from an English army background he lived and died for Ireland with an inherent dignity

and a tremendous pride in his Wexford connection. Mr. Martin was thanked by Lorcan Allen on behalf of the people of Castletown and presented with a 1916 DVD by Anne Gilmartin Ryan and a book on 1916 by the author, Galwegian historian Conor McNamara. The Mayor of Galway Michael Connolly thanked the people of Castletown on behalf of the people of Galway. Before concluding Lorcan Allen thanked all for turning out particularly Enniscorthy Historical Re-enactment Society and Monageer 1916 Group saying that they were a credit to themselves in their attire and demeanour. – Maria Nolan

Caroline gets motoring kia niro review by Caroline Kidd

the toyota Prius is the world’s most famous hybrid car but it’s not the only hybrid in town anymore. hybrid technology is becoming more mainstream and more and more i find myself hopping in and out of something that combines a petrol engine with an electric motor, and promises great fuel economy in the process. The latest hybrid I’ve been driving is the Kia Niro. It only arrived in Ireland in October and it’s a hybrid packaged as a very trendy crossover. The Kia Niro is very happy to just blend in with little decoration except for a discreet ‘eco hybrid’ badge on the rear. In terms of size, the Niro slots in between the Cee’d hatchback and the popular Sportage SUV. The Niro is compact enough in the metal, but there is a very spacious cabin inside. The rear legroom

Kia Niro

is excellent for this class of vehicle and a 427 litre boot is generous too. I was very impressed with the interior quality of the new Niro, and Kia has definitely stepped things up a notch for their new crossover.

Leather upholstery comes as standard and the cabin has quite a premium feel. The Kia Niro is priced from €29,095, and that price includes the €1,500 VRT reduction for hybrids. Niro is offered with a high spec

that includes four electric windows, heated front seats and steering wheel, cruise control, dual zone climate control, a touchscreen with navigation and Android Auto compatibility, and Lane Keep Assist.

Every month Bunclody native Caroline Kidd brings you the best from the world of motoring, including car reviews, news and more. Caroline is a member of the irish Motoring Writers’ association (iMWa) and a jury member for irish Car of the year. you can follow her blog Changing lanes at www.changinglanes.ie. The Niro’s hybrid powertrain is made up of a 1.6-litre petrol engine, an electric motor and a battery pack, and together the system produces 139bhp. A strong selling point for the Niro is of course that it is cheap to run. CO2 emissions are just 88g/km so motor tax is €180 per year. Kia quote 74mpg for the Niro. I averaged 52mpg over a week of driving, though I did see 56mpg on some trips. With some care who knows what you could achieve! Like most hybrids, on the road the Niro is mostly a very smooth and silent driving experience. Kia has opted for a dual clutch automatic transmission, which changes gear in a more natural way and with less noise than the CVT gearbox that has been common in many hybrids to date. The handling is not particularly exciting but it is pre-

dictable, the steering is decent enough and ride comfort is also very good. The accelerator pedal feels a bit dull most of the time but if you need power quickly there is a sport mode that loosens up the throttle considerably. The Niro seems to be the perfect product at a time when there is huge consumer demand for crossovers and hybrids are becoming more mainstream. The Niro won’t set your pulse racing for performance and pin sharp handling but it’s a low emission hybrid that’s packaged in a way that will be very appealing to a lot of people. Model tested: Kia Niro hyrid Price: €29,095 Power: 139bhp 0-100km/h: 11.5 seconds Economy: 74mpg CO2 emissions: 88g/km Motor tax: €180 per year n

Donohoe Skoda - new showroom Some of Ireland's top sports personalities were at Donohoe Skoda, Quarrypark, Enniscorthy, at the end of November to celebrate the opening of the new Skoda showroom there. RTE’s popular sports presenter Des Cahill was MC for the occasion which included guests such as former Irish rugby player Luke Fitzgerald, Irish soccer star Stephen Hunt and Wexford senior hurling manager Davy Fitzgerald. The guest panel gave their insights into being Irish sports stars and fielded questions from a large and enthusiastic audience. Donohoe Skoda has invested hugely in its facilities at Quarrypark and now employs over 20 people there in the areas of Sales, Servicing, Parts, Administration and Marketing.

Born in 1982, the first time Enniscorthy’s Wallis Bird came in contact with music she was only six months old getting her first guitar from her father. Born left-handed, she lost five fingers of her left hand in a lawnmower accident, and had four sewn back on again. she became used to playing a righthanded guitar upside-down, which contributes to her unconventional style of playing. After school Wallis moved to Dublin to study at the Ballyfermot Rock School and began playing in small clubs and pubs and then bigger venues and festivals. She moved to Germany in 2005 and has been producing great music ever since. One recent review said: “Few can enrapture an audience the way Wallis Bird can; and few can be unmoved

St Stephen’s Day fundraisers on a bright and beautiful st. stephen’s morn Enniscorthy was bathed in winter sunshine and the spirit of Christmas giving, first at Bellefield gaa Complex as a large crowd gathered for the 9th annual Michael Foley Pudding run. Members of Michael’s family, extended family, friends, colleagues, team mates and associates came together as they have done each year since his untimely death to remember him and honour his life along with renewing old friendships in a fundraising event for the CBs Bursary in his name. The annual event organised by brothers Jim and Phil Kearney has become not just a chance to shake off the festive cobwebs and seasonal overindulgence but an opportunity

for old friends and family to meet and spend time in each others company at Yuletide as well as raising money for the worthy Bursary. After the five-mile walk all returned to the Bellefield clubhouse for light refreshments catered by Majella Murphy and Terri Foley where Phil Kearney thanked all for coming and presented prizes to all the winners. Then it was on to The Still for the St. Stephen’s Day Hunt, another great annual fundraiser for Enniscorthy Community Workshop another very worthy cause and another fantastic Christmas social occasion where people come together over the festive period to enjoy the spectacle and tradition of the hunt. – Maria Nolan

the annual general Meeting of the rapparees/starlights was held in the Bellefield Clubhouse on sunday 11th december at 5pm. The well attended meeting heard that club finances were stable and heading in the right direction but expenses such as equipment, injuries and gear were still very high and needed to be examined closer in the New Year.

Chairman John Browne was re-elected unopposed for the third consecutive year and in his address paid tribute to a hardworking Executive Committee particularly officers Secretary Ger McVeigh, Treasurer Kathleen Miller, PRO Maria Nolan and all those who were working week in and week out on lotto, bingo, race-night and all the other club fundraisers that help to alleviate the burden of running the

club from one year to the next. John thanked all mentors and coaches with all teams, underage, adult, and ladies. Before the meeting concluded John called for all to stand for a Minute’s Silence for former Chairman Donal Minnock who passed to his eternal reward during the week saying that Donal had made a major contribution to the Rapparees/Starlights over his

terms in office.
