With English’s Furniture Store in the process of closing down its premises on Court Street and the upcoming closure of Cloze and Shooz (following the recent sad passing of Mag Casey), Enniscorthy is losing two long-established family businesses. The recent coming to town of multiples such as Dealz and EuroGiant helps to fill some of the town’s empty premises but cannot replace the unique character represented by local, family businesses. It is up to all of us to support the remaining family businesses in town to help them thrive. For example, one local businessman told us recently how he is often asked by people to give part-time jobs to their teenagers although those same people never frequent his premises from one end of the year to the next. We need to start supporting our local businesses more for all our sakes! Anthony –––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––– The recent death of Enniscorthy’s Anthony Cronin Cronin was mourned nationally. A found- R.i.P. ing member of Aosdana (an Irish affiliation of artists engaged in literature, music and visual arts), Anthony was well known and loved in literary and racing circles and was always proud of his Enniscorthy connection. New bus service to Carlow Students can now commute easily to Carlow I.T. from Wexford, Enniscorthy, Bunclody, etc thanks to Wexford Bus
www.wexfordbus.com
At a time of uncertainty over Co. Wexford’s rail network and Bus Eireann’s Expressway services, it’s great to learn that the Wexford Bus network is widening with new, daily services to Carlow and Carlow IT. Wexford Bus will be operating a new route from Wexford to Carlow and Carlow IT via Enniscorthy and Bunclody from Monday February 6th 2017. The introduction of this service to Carlow also offers passengers greater connectivity between the towns and cities of the South East. With the addition of this new route, Wexford Bus will now have daily services operating from Wexford to WIT, Carlow IT and the colleges and universities in Dublin. “We carry a large number of students to and from college in Dublin and Waterford on both a daily and weekly basis and recog-
nise that many students want to commute to college. This new Wexford Bus service to/from Carlow IT will make that easier and more affordable for students from Co. Wexford,” explains Brendan Crowley, Managing Director, Wexford Bus. “We are continually enhancing our network of services, we started a new service between Wexford and Waterford in 2015 and have already extended this to operate up to 8 daily services in each direction. Each year we have increased the number of services operating to Dublin City & Airport and now operate up to 18 daily services in each direction. The addition of Carlow to our network is the natural next step for Wexford Bus and we look forward to serving the passengers on this route as we develop the connectivity of all the major towns and cities in the South East.”
Route 376 will be the new route between Wexford and Carlow via Enniscorthy, Bunclody and Ballon. The first service in the morning will leave Wexford (Redmond Square) at 07.30 and is scheduled to arrive in Carlow IT for 08.45. Wexford Bus will operate up to 3 daily services in each direction and the coaches operating on the service will be wi-fi enabled and will accept Leap Cards. Wexford Bus also operates route 740 between Wexford and Dublin City & Airport via Enniscorthy, Ferns, Gorey and Arklow, and route 340 between Wexford and Waterford via New Ross. With a Leap Student Travel Card, students can travel to and from Dublin for €9 per journey. For full details of the timetables and fares see: www.wexfordbus.com n
National housing conference for Enniscorthy It was announced on January 10th, in government Buildings, that Ireland’s first nzEB (Nearly zero Energy Building) Housing Conference will take place in Enniscorthy on Thursday, March 2nd. The announcement was made by Minister of State with responsibility for defence, Mr. Paul Kehoe Td, in the presence of Mr. Simon Coveney Td, Minister for Housing, Planning, Community and Local government, who will officially open the one-day conference. It will take place in Enniscorthy’s Riverside Park Hotel and will be attended by upwards of 200 architects, house planners, local authority housing officers and building contractors among others and will have as its theme ‘ Energy Efficiency for Everyone’. The conference is being hosted by nZEBRA, a subsidiary of MosArt Ltd., a Rathnew, County Wicklow, based firm of Architectural, Landscape and Urban Design specialists who have a particular interest in nZeb construction and design. MosArt are responsible for the design, detailing and certification of
Wexford County Council’s nZEB scheme presently under construction at The Moyne, Enniscorthy. It is being built by Michael Bennett and Sons, Building Contractors, Ballinakill, Ballycarney, Enniscorthy, and is one of the most energy efficient Local Authority schemes in Ireland with a Building Energy Rating of A1 minus. MosArt is engaged in several projects in Enniscorthy at present ranging from urban infill and redevelopment to large scale sustainable housing. Its Managing Director, Tomás O’Leary, is a native of The Moyne, Enniscorthy, and has been a thought leader in sustainable building design for more than a decade. He designed, built and lives in the first certified Passive House in the Englishspeaking world and delivers training and consulting services right across the globe, including the US and China. Wexford County Council, Ireland’s first Local Authority to construct an nZEB and Passive House rated housing scheme, is fully supporting the conference with Chief Executive, Tom Enright, and Enniscorthy Town
Manager, Liz Hore, involved in every aspect of its planning. The conference is also being supported and promoted by the Construction Industry Federation and its Director General, Mr. Tom Parlon, is among the impressive list of speakers who will address delegates. The conference will hear from leading experts on delivery of accelerated and affordable future-proof housing in Ireland and delegates will be given a step-by-step ‘behind the scenes’ introduction to the construction of an nZEB (Nearly Zero Energy Building) home. Ireland will introduce nZEB building compliance as mandatory from 2018 for all public buildings and from 2020 for all other buildings and this upcoming nZEB conference is designed to brief all interested parties of what is involved in the process. nZEBRA’s lead team of Tomás O’ Leary, Art McCormack and Andy Lundberg share a vast expertise in building science and together they provide solutions for building designers and contractors aiming to achieve cost-optimal sustainable buildings. Their contribution and
input to the planned conference is of paramount importance to its envisaged success, Minister of State Paul Kehoe said in announcing that Enniscorthy had been chosen as the venue for this important event. This is the first national conference to take place in Enniscorthy and with an anticipated attendance of 200 it will bring a major financial boost to the town in its wake. The Riverside Park Hotel is placing all its facilities at the disposal of the organising committee and Enniscorthy Municipal District is planning a reception in Enniscorthy Castle for visiting delegates on the night prior to the event. Enniscorthy and District Chamber of Commerce is also involved in the pre-conference planning and is providing administrative assistance to the organisers, while ‘The Echo’ group of newspapers has accepted an invitation to become the conference organisers’ media partners. Full details of the upcoming conference including registration details can be obtained at nZEBRA.ie n
rTe PrOGraMMe TO FeaTure enniSCOrTHY’S nZeb HOuSinG PrOJeCT PriOr TO COnFerenCe RTE’s ‘Eco Eye’ programme, scheduled for airing on February 14th and again on February 20th, will feature Wexford County Council’s new nZEB housing scheme at Madeira Oaks, The Moyne, Enniscorthy, which is being constructed by Michael Bennett and Sons, Building Contractors. The programme is presented by leading environmentalist, Duncan Stewart, who recently spent a number of days on the site in the Moyne filming sequences for the half hour programme. News of the national broadcaster’s interest in the housing scheme comes one week after it was announced in Government Buildings that Enniscorthy is to host Ireland’s first ever nZEB (Nearly Zero Energy Building) Housing conference in the town on March 2nd. Minister for Housing, Planning, Community and Local Government, Mr. Simon Coveney T.D. will open the conference with a keynote address which is expected to contain the Government’s future plans for the construction industry in Ireland. He is also expected to commit to the nZEB concept of housing going forward and to say that the Government is committed to being fully nZEB compliant by 2020. A panel of national and international speakers will address the conference including Mr. Sean Armstrong from the Department of Housing, Planning, Community and Local Government who will outline a roadmap for the delivery of nZEB housing in Ireland. Wexford County Council’s Chief Executive, Mr. Tom Enright, will speak of how Wexford County Council became the first local authority in Ireland to embrace the nZEB housing concept by building an nZEB scheme at Madeira Oaks, The Moyne, Enniscorthy which is presently under construction there. He will invite delegates to visit the site and will be a key figure in the narration of a video which is being made to show the work being done and what is involved in bringing it to fruition. The video will form an integral part of the day- long conference and will be shown to delegates during the course of the discussions. Dr. Shane Colclough of the University of Ulster will examine Data-Energy and Performance Monitoring, while Tomas O’ Leary, Managing Director of MosArt, will outline for delegates the details – Envelope and Mechanical Systems involved in nZEB construction. Dragomir Tzanev from Bulgaria will detail the training schedule required for construction workers in order to deliver nZeb housing while Andree Dargan, County Architect of Dun Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council, will deliver an address based on Retrofitting Social Houses in Dun Laoghaire. Mr. Tom Parlon, Director General of the Construction Industry Federation, and Mr. Pat Cox, Former President of the European Parliament, along with an nZEB dweller will take part in a panel discussion on the merits of nZEB living which will be chaired by Mr. Tomas O’Leary who designed, built and lives in the first certified Passive House ever built in Ireland. n

ransomware: what do you need to know?
FERNS COMPUTER SERVICES
Ransomware is the new hot threat everyone is talking about. What do you need to know?
by DaviD pohluDek Ferns compuTer services
Ransomware stops you from using your PC. It holds your PC or files for "ransom". There are different types of ransomware. However, all of them will prevent you from using your PC normally, and they will all ask you to do something before you can use your PC. Ransomware will demand that you pay money (a “ransom”) to get access to your PC or files. There is no guarantee that paying the fine or doing what the ransomware tells you will give access to your PC or files again. Older versions of ransom usually claim you have done something illegal with your PC, and that you are being fined by a police force or government agency. These claims are false. It is a scare tactic designed to make you pay the money without telling anyone who might be able to restore your PC. Newer versions encrypt the files on your PC so you can’t access them, and then simply demand money to restore your files. Ransomware can get on your PC from nearly any source that any other malware (including viruses) can come from. This includes: • Visiting unsafe, suspicious, or fake websites. • Opening emails and email attachments from people you don’t know, or that you weren’t expecting. • Clicking on malicious or bad links in emails and other social media posts. It can be very difficult to restore your PC after a ransomware attack – especially if it’s infected by encryption ransomware. That’s why the best solution to ransomware is to be safe on the Internet and with emails and online chat. RANSOMWARE PREvENTION: The first step in ransomware prevention is to invest in cybersecurity. Start with an antivirus with active monitoring (for example, Malwarebytes Antimalware 3.0 and Malwarebytes Anti-Ransomware). Next, you need to create secure backups of your data on a regular basis. You can purchase USBs or an external hard drive where you can save new or updated files—just be sure to physically disconnect the devices from your computer after backing up, otherwise they can become infected with ransomware, too. Cloud storage is another option. n Ferns Computer Services has been in business in Ferns since May 2007. Established by David Pohludek, it has a huge clientele base all over Co. Wexford and beyond.

Central to this objective of preparing the individual for the world of work, all learners undertake work experience in the area of their chosen study gaining ‘hands on’ experience which will complement their CV. The vast majority of the courses lead to a QQI (Quality and Qualifications Ireland) Level 5 qualification with Early Childhood Care and Education leading to a Level 6 award. Hairdressing and Beauty Therapy are two years in duration leading to different qualifications. Why enrol on a Further Education Course at EvCFE: n Excellent links with Universities and Institutes of Technology which allow students the chance to further enhance their qualifications. n Excellent facilities and a committed and hardworking team whose sole focus is that every learner reaches their full potential. n Learners can obtain up to 400 CAO points through com-
pleting a QQI Level 5 Course. Individuals can defer their place in college and gain a better understanding of the area they are interested in. n Research has shown that learners who successfully complete a QQI Level 5 Course are better equipped and more likely to succeed at Higher Education. n Mature learners are given a second chance at education and for many this can be a very rewarding and enjoyable experience. Each year eighteen students are selected following interviews from the following courses: Beauty Therapy, Hairdressing, Business, Pre-Science, Pre-Nursing and Childcare for the Erasmus Plus Programme. This excellent opportunity affords learners the chance of getting three weeks work placement in Vasteras, Sweden. The entire educational trip is funded by Leargas and the feedback from participants has always been excellent. The time in Sweden gives learners a valuable insight into the work practices and culture of another country. EVCFE provides courses in five schools of learning including the school of Arts, Cosmetic Science, Humanities, the Physical Sciences and Engineering. Working with Aberystwyth University, Waterford Institute of Technology and International Professional Awarding Bodies, EVCFE delivers educational opportunity for students of all age groups and experiences. Scissor Sisterz raise â‚Ź15,000 for Hospice Keara and Tanya doran of Scissor Sisterz hairdressing salon on Main Street, Enniscorthy, and their organising colleague, Mary Banks, would like to thank everybody for supporting their fashion show fundraiser held last October for Wexford Hospice Homecare Service. All the monies are now in and the three ladies are very pleased to announce that the event raised an incredible â‚Ź15,276 plus a subsequent donation of â‚Ź100. With the huge support received from local businesses and the general public they managed to run the event with zero outgoings which means that every cent raised from ticket sales, raffle and auction goes directly to Wexford Hospice Homecare (WHH).
On 18th January, the proc e e d s w e re p re s e n t e d t o Eamonn Mernagh and John Maguire representing WHH. To cap off a great year in 2016, Scissor Sisterz recently celebrated ten great years in business. So, congratulations on all fronts! n
Focus on dyspraxia / dCd dyspraxia /dCd is a common disorder affecting fine and gross motor coordination in children and adults. A child with DCD may have a combination of several problems in varying degrees:  Poor balance  Poor fine and gross motor coordination  Poor posture  Difficulties with throwing and catching a ball  Poor awareness of body posture and space  Poor sense of direction  Difficulties in hopping, skipping or riding a bike  Sensitive to touch  Confused about which hand to use
 Intolerance of having hair or teeth brushed, nails and hair cut  Slow to learn to dress or feed themselves  Find some clothes uncomfortable  Difficulties with reading and writing  Speech problems, slow to learn to speak, and speech may be incoherent  Phobias, obsessive behaviour, inpatience. Children with DCD can be of average or above intelligence but are often behaviourally immature. They try to achieve socially accepted behaviour when at school but often throw tantrums when at home. They may find it difficult to understand logic and reason.
Not all children with Dyspraxia have all these problems. Many parents will say that their child has some of these problems, or in many cases a cluster of these problems. There is no cure but the earlier a child is treated the greater the chance of improvement will be. A lot of the skills that we take for granted will never become automatic for a child with Dyspraxia so they have to be taught these skills. Occupational therapy, physiotherapy and extra help at school can all assist these children with coping or overcoming many of the difficulties they face. n

Support for those affected by Dyspraxia in Co. Wexford Bunclody-based veronica Kenny is well known locally for her support and advocacy work for those affected by dyspraxia (a developmental disorder of the brain in childhood causing difficulty in activities requiring coordination and movement). We spoke recently to veronica about her story‌ “As a family we started out
in 2005 when our eldest started school and the word ‘dyspraxia’ was mentioned. We didn't know where to turn for support. Dyspraxia Ireland were great but on a local level we as a family were looking for support so I took it upon myself and stuck an ad in the Enniscorthy Echo, the response was something else. That’s ten years and more since that ad went in!!!
kilmyshall set Dancers raise nearly â‚Ź6,000 for Dyspraxia ireland. l-R: mary jordan, kilmyshall set Dancers, Veronica kenny, Dyspraxia wexford Chairperson, martin Carroll, kilmyshall set Dancers, Harry Conway, Dyspraxia ireland.
“Since then we hold monthly meetings in the Riverside Park Hotel in Enniscorthy and we get a great response at the meeting, always newcomers and lots of the original crew. “I, on a daily basis, help the people of Wexford on how to get their child assessed and what services are available within the HSE waiting list etc.
My phone never stops and it's always a parent in dire straights not knowing where to turn. I know first-hand what it's like and it's nice to be able to help other families. “The waiting lists for occupational therapy to assess the child is unreal so a lot of families go privately to get the assessment done and get the child the help and support they deserve.
But families should not have to go privately or have to go on long waiting lists. If the extra help is provided within the school system early, the child may improve, but if no help is received they definitely won't improve. “It's part of my life now helping other families in the same situation as we were, except there was no help when our son was first diagnosed.

Sale of St Senan’s Hospital Riverside Park Hotel – Expansion and Renovation
The four-star Riverside Park Hotel & Leisure Club in Enniscorthy is currently undergoing an exciting expansion and redesign of its ever popular Promenade Bar. The Bar is being extended to the boundary of the hotel with a complete glass wall overlooking the River Slaney. It will be remodelled and redesigned to give a completely new and luxurious setting for lunch, dinner, coffee with friends or to relax over a quiet drink. The renovation of the Promenade Bar is due to be completed on 10th February, until then the bar facilities are located in the Hilton Suite overlooking the beautiful River Slaney. Business is running as normal with Carvery Lunch served from 12pm daily and an extensive Bar Food Menu served in the afternoon and evening. Entertainment is continuing every weekend from the Hilton Suite. The Alamo Steakhouse has
relocated to the Moorings Restaurant during the Promenade Bar extension. The Alamo Steakhouse Full Menu is being served as normal every evening from 6pm and 4pm on a Sunday. Along with the New Promenade Bar owner Colm Neville is managing an ambitious expansion that will see the hotel bedroom numbers increase from 78 to 100 rooms by May 2017. The new bedrooms will consist of deluxe and family rooms as well as a couples-only floor incorporating 2 junior suites overlook Enniscorthy Town and Castle and comes only two years after opening their last expansion of 20 bedrooms and additional function room The Seamus Rafter Suite. The hotel has seen strong growth in the tourism sector over the past two years due to the upturn in the economy, the growth of overseas visitors to the country in general, the
release of the Brooklyn movie in Enniscorthy and the promotion of our area from both Visit Wexford and Enniscorthy & District Chamber of Commerce. The entire new extension will create an additional requirement for 12 new jobs at the property, bringing the total number of staff employed at The Riverside Park Hotel to 177. It is expected the completed hotel will attract up to 30,000 room nights in only one year representing a very significant footfall on the streets of Enniscorthy. The owner, Colm Neville, says, “The entire team here at The Riverside Park Hotel & Leisure Club have a proven track record and we will continue to offer our customers an impeccable high level of accommodation, service and a standard of personalised care… and we thank our loyal customers for their continued business and support down through the years.” n

St. Senan’s Hospital, on the outskirts of Enniscorthy, was formerly a county asylum and first opened in 1868 and continued to provide a range of medical services until it closed in 2015. The building is currently on sale with a guide price of €780,000. A separate landholding is also on sale for €630,000. A lot of opinions have been expressed on what should happen to the building and the proceeds of the sale. Fianna Fáil Spokesperson on Mental Health and local TD, James Browne, says the money raised through the sale of the former St. Senan’s psychiatric hospital should be ring-fenced for mental health services in Wexford. He said, “There are a number of capital projects in our mental health service that need to be advanced in Wexford. In particular there is an urgent need for a new emergency department unit for people accessing mental health services. Staff in this unit
would be trained specifically in dealing with mental health issues and will ensure that patients get the care that they need.” An emergency motion calling on the Health Minister Simon Harris to ring-fence funds gained from the sale of St Senan’s for a 24/7 mental health service in County Wexford was passed at the January meeting of Wexford County Council. The motion had been tabled by the County’s five Sinn Fein Councillors who said that they would not accept vague assurances from the Minister and wanted a definitive promise. “The closure of St Senan’s spelled the end of any degree of adequate 24/7 mental health care in County Wexford,” Cllr Johnny Mythen said, “We are still reeling from the closure years later and no replacement service has been provided. Instead those suffering with serious mental health issues are sent to Waterford Regional Hospital where proper care can often not be provided.” Enniscorthy Councillor and
Chairman of Wexford County Council, Paddy Kavanagh, has called for St Senan’s to be purchased by the Department of Education and Skills as a campus for second and third-level education. “I believe the iconic building and surrounding lands could play a key role in helping Wexford to meet its goals in terms of developing educational and workforce skills, improving work readiness and providing paths to employment.” He emphasised Wexford’s exceptionally low rate of third-level attainment (currently 20.9%) – the third lowest in the country. New Ross Councillor Michael Sheehan wants “the retention of St. Senan’s in public ownership” and favours “the development of a suite of measures including housing, enterprise, incubation units and of course a satellite campus for universities to offer courses locally. In due course, the property would be an ideal location for a new University in the South East.” n
Council demands improved rail links atmospheric photo of enniscorthy train station. Pic: David butler Photography.
At the January meeting of Wexford County Council the elected members reviewed and approved a comprehensive submission in relation to the Rail Review Report, recently published by the National Transport Authority and Iarnród Éireann. The Rail Review Report identifies that cost savings would be made by suspending services on a number of rail lines in the country – including the Dublin to Rosslare Europort line south of Gorey. The 60 page Council submission opposes any reduction in rail services and takes issue with the findings and recommendations of the Report, stating the Council is “emphatically opposed to the suspension of any rail services in County Wexford”. In its submission, Wexford County Council states that the rail service serving Wexford is critically and strategically important for the social and economic benefit of the county and says the relatively low passenger numbers using the Rosslare Europort to
Dublin line is largely due to the poor level of service provided by Irish Rail on the line, with generally only 4 scheduled services a day departing from Rosslare, slow travel times and inadequate rolling stock A key element of the Council’s submission is the fact that the mainline service from Wexford shares a single rail line with the DART service from Greystones, with resulting scheduling problems, reduced frequency and slow travel times. The submission addresses this difficulty by recommending that the mainline rail service operates between Rosslare Europort and Bray, with a rail link to Dublin via the DART service at Bray (operating every 10 to 15 minutes at peak times). The Council submission recommends that appropriate investment be provided by central government into improving and enhancing the standard of service of the rail system serving County Wexford in order to
increase passenger numbers and improve the economic viability of the service. It recommends that Irish Rail gives strong consideration to: • Provision of appropriate quality inter-city rail carriages on service between Bray and Rosslare Europort. • Increasing frequency of service, particularly at peak times. • Improving travel time by limiting stops at smaller stations, particularly at peak times and appropriate investment in coastal protection works to ensure that exposed sections of rail line are protected. • Fare prices to be reviewed in order to be competitive with other modes of transport. The submission goes on to say the Council views any decision on the suspension of rail services to be premature pending the publication of the proposed National Planning Framework, due to be completed later in 2017. n

‘9 to 5: The Musical’ is a hilarious new musical comedy, based on the hit movie and centres on three office workers who turn the tables on their sexist, egotistical, lying, hypocritical bigot of a boss. They conspire to take control of the company and learn
there’s nothing they can’t do. Outrageous, thought-provoking and even a little romantic, ‘9 To 5: The Musical’ is about teaming up and taking care of business. Feisty, fun and oh so fabulous! This show features Dolly Parton’s original hit title song, “9 to 5” which won her an Oscar nomination and 4 Grammy Award nominations along with her new Tony and Grammy nominated score. The show takes to the line dancing boards of the Opera House, Wexford, 24th to 29th April next, and rehearsals are now in full swing. WLOS will hold a fundraising Table Quiz on Friday 24th February at 8 pm at Wexford Harbour Boat & Tennis Club – all welcome. n

The Children of Lir Rehearsals for Ireland’s first folk opera ‘The Children of Lir’ are in full swing as it prepares to return to the stage at the National Opera House Wexford with two local school choirs playing a major role. 100 students from Selskar C o l l e g e a n d t h e L o re t o Secondary School in Wexford will join the cast and musicians of The Children of Lir for three performances on this February 3rd and 4th. They have been practising the music with their choir teachers for a number of months. The Children of Lir is a famous Irish legend telling a story of love, sorrow and betrayal with the swans representing freedom, beauty, jealousy and everlasting youth. Composer Brian O’Reilly says, “The student choirs have done an incredible amount of work over the last number of months. Within the Children of Lir production we haven’t worked with a
choir of young students for stage since 1973, which was our very first production. We are thrilled to bring the beauty of these crisp youthful voices to the show, they contrast so well with the male voice choir that the sound is spectacular; it is the purity of these voices which makes this production sound so enchanting.” The first staging of the musical rendition of O’Reilly’s ‘The Children of Lir ’ took place in January 1973. It was an immediate success and heralded as Ireland’s first Folk Opera. ‘The Children of Lir’ has been enjoyed by over 25,000 people all over the world, since it was first performed by the group in 1973. It was so successful, Polydor Records picked up on it and signed ‘Loudest Whisper’ to make an album of the music. Ireland’s first concept album ‘The Children of Lir ’ was issued in 1975 and this is now a collector’s item.
With each staging of The Children of Lir over the years came new and innovative ideas both for the work itself and for its production. Due to its tremendous success, in 2005 Sunbeam Records UK contacted Brian O’Reilly regarding a re-issue of the 1975 album ‘The Children of Lir ’ on vinyl. Following a meeting in London, the O’Reilly brothers Paud and B r i a n w e re h a p p y w i t h Sunbeam’s offer. ‘The Children of Lir’ was re-mastered in Abbey Road and a limited edition of the album on 180g virgin vinyl was issued in 2006. This edition was also a sell out. Brian and his team behind the concert have also been working with a 20-strong male voice choir who will join the 9 musicians of Loudest Whisper, the two school choirs, a string quartet and narrator plus four ballerinas all under the baton of young vibrant

The Girlfriend Cabaret
Don Wycherley in the touching and entertaining My Real Life by Eoin Colfer.
Saturday, 11 February, 2017, 8pm Jerome Hynes Theatre - National Opera House The Girlfriend’s Back! Elizabeth Rose-Browne returns with her comedy cabaret for a ‘One-night-stand-up’ comedy cabaret! You begged her to come back, now Elizabeth Rose-Browne brings her comedy music show, The Girlfriend Cabaret, to the National Opera House on Saturday, 11 February, at 8pm. Just in time for Valentine’s Day, The Girlfriend Cabaret is an eclectic mix of songs and stories inspired by every girlfriend that you ever knew! Elizabeth first staged The Girlfriend Cabaret in 2015 and has since been asked numerous times to perform it again. With a philosophy of ‘never do something again unless you can make it better’, the new, updated version is funnier and more cringeworthy than ever before. Elizabeth is familiar to Wexford audiences from her previous work with Wexford Light Opera Society, Wexford Improv Group, Newline Theatre and most recently, in the much-celebrated world premiere of Noël the Musical, written by Liam Bates and Eoin Colfer. Having originally trained as a classical singer, Elizabeth soon realised that wasn’t for her and opted for a career in theatre instead, having trained at the theatre conservatory at Cornish College of the Arts in Seattle. Since moving to Ireland in 1994, she has worked with RTÉ, TG4, Wexford Festival Opera and Red Kettle Theatre Company, among others. She also frequently writes her own shows, most recently What Makes Women Special, which was performed last year in honour of International Women’s Day and Mother’s Day. The Girlfriend Cabaret is a show that combines the best of Elizabeth’s wide-ranging vocal styles and innovative theatrical devising skills to create a full-length musical cabaret with a self-styled quirky twist, sure to entertain male and female audience members alike. Accompanied by the incomparable Eithne Corrigan, Elizabeth takes the audience through a comedic and sometimes cringeworthy exploration of girlfriends past, present and (God-forbid) future, through song and story, featuring a wide range of music from Gershwin to Kurt Weill to Randy Newman and many others. The Girlfriend Cabaret is back for one-night only on Saturday, 11 February at 8pm in the Jerome Hynes Theatre at the National Opera House. Tickets are €18/€16 and available 24/7 on www.nationaloperahouse.ie or box-office at 053 912 2144. This is a ‘one-night-stand-up’ you should plan in advance!

My REal lifE 9 Feb – 11 Feb. Drama. Theatre Royal presents Sing Street star Don Wycherley in the touching and entertaining My Real Life by Eoin Colfer. Wexford man Noel has advanced MS and decides to end it all. While waiting for his overdose to take effect he records an increasingly rambling message for his best friend. Noel has apologies to make and messages to send. He has love in his heart and he wants to declare it even if it’s already too late. Noel spends what is possibly the last hour of his life re-living the highs and lows of the past forty years and, surprisingly perhaps, it’s not all doom and gloom. My Real Life is a play that will make you laugh and make you cry. ––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––
poRtia CouGhlan 17-18 Feb and 23-25 Feb. Wexford Drama Group. Portia Coughlan by Marina Carr with Wexford Drama Group Powerful drama written by Marina Carr & Directed by Paul Walsh. Portia appears to have everything she could ever want; a wealthy husband, three small sons, caring friends and a beautiful house, but she would willingly give it all up for a glimpse of her dead twin brother Gabriel who drowned on their fifteenth birthday.
‘Portia Coughlan’ written by Marina Carr is a tragedy play set in Ireland in the 1990’s. An unstable young woman, named Portia would appear to have everything she could ever want; a wealthy husband, three small sons, caring friends and a beautiful house in the Belmont Valley. However, she would willingly give it all up for a glimpse of her dead twin brother Gabriel who drowned on their fifteenth birthday. The play documents the final two days of Portia’s struggle with this event which has dominated her life. It is a human story which we can all identify with on some level. We see the dysfunction within the family, the bickering amongst the strong female characters, the snide remarks and the whispering words which float around this small parish. Although the theme of the play is a dark one, it is far from tame. With foul and cruel insults being fired out, rage building to moments of violence and some jiving and waltzing and flirting happening in the local pub, this is a play with a strong story line, strong characters and strong emotions. Marina Carr is one of Ireland’s most celebrated female writers and has written many well-known plays such as ‘On Raftery’s Hill’, ‘By The Bog of Cats’ and ‘The Mai’.

The Presentation Centre EPISODIC MEMORY an Exhibition of Work by Caroline Jacobsz at the Presentation Centre, 13th January - 20th February 2017. Caroline graduated from The National College of Art and Design, Dublin in 2003. Originally from Wexford, Caroline has had a rich history of travel and experience having worked in Australia, London and most recently South Africa teaching Art and Design. While teaching in South Africa Caroline also ran her own set and prop design business Red Slipper Designs. She has exhibited in the Wexford Opera Festival, Art Action Gallery, Antrim and Gallery X, Dublin. Her work touches on subjects such as emigration, travel & choices which are prominent hurdles in the lives of many, but especially challenges many young people and young families in Ireland are faced with in the present climate. These thought provoking themes are enriched by Caroline’s own personal life experiences, portrayed in such a way that they become relatable, inviting and shared with the viewer. The creation of Memories and process of remembering is evident in the pieced togetherness of her work resulting in the visual representation of a journey made by decisions. “Memories underlie so much of our rich life as humans, our ability to learn, to tell stories, even to recognise each other." Episodic Memory aims to evoke a sense of memory for the viewer and the artist. Drawings of national and international icons play a symbolic part in the work. Drawing on location, drawing from photographs, tracing, redrawing, inventing, rubbing, sewing and machine embroidery create images of reflection. Colour appears and disappears. Nostalgia or trepidation is apparent and brings about the realisation that we have choices to make and parts to play.” – Artist's Statement.

LESLIE DOWDALL & MIKE HANRAHAN 18th Feb 2017, 8.30pm. With legendary histories behind them, Leslie with her earlier career with “In Tua Nua” and Mike with the famed “Stockton’s Wing”, combine to present a powerful and innovative force on stage. Acclaimed singer/songwriters, Leslie Dowdall and Mike Hanrahan will perform from their much anticipated national tour, ‘You are my sister’. Between them and to the present day, they are still lauded for retrospective classic hits such as ’Beautiful Affair’, ‘Walkaway’, ‘Freedom’ and Leslie's signature tune “Wonderful Thing”. Their replication of collected and intriguing tunes combined with dynamic originals never fail to enchant their audience. Partners in crime since 2009, they recently have recorded a version of Anthony and the Johnston’s compelling composition, ‘You are my sister’, which will soon be available for download. Leslie Dowdall first found fame as the voice of In Tua Nua, the band that fused Celtic traditions with rock for seven years in the 1980s. Her solo career began in earnest with the release of her first album in 1997, the artfully entitled 'No Guilt, No Guile'. The album won high praise for the creativity, vision and the soulful vocals for so long hidden beneath the music of the past. As a result, Leslie won the 1997 'Best Solo Female' artist at the Heineken/Hot Press Music Awards. Leslie remains one of the best female singer-songwriters in Ireland today. Singer, songwriter, guitarist Mike Hanrahan, who is best remembered for his work with Stockton's Wing, has been working with Ronnie Drew and Eleanor Shanley for the past 10 years and is now working with Leslie Dowdall.

A Whistle in the Dark is a play by Tom Murphy that premiered in 1961 at the Theatre Royal Stratford East London, having been rejected by the Abbey Theatre. It then went on to be a West End hit. Murphy was twenty-five years old at the time. It tells the story in three acts of the climactic confrontation between Michael, the oldest of the Carney sons, and his father and brothers, a brawling, hard-drinking, criminal gang of Irish immigrants living and working in Coventry. A powerful portrayal of tribal violence and the devastation it brings in its wake in spite of attempts to stand against it, it remains Murphy’s best known and most performed play.

Following the Palestine Exhibition in Enniscorthy…
Helen Ashdown, Cllr Johnny Mythen and Fidelma Bonass who took all the photos in the exhibition
Palestine photographic exhibition in January at The Athenaeum in Enniscorthy
L-R: Noirin Healy-Magwa, Elaine Daly and Martin O'Quigley, Vice-Chairperson of the Irish Palestinian Solidarity Campaign, at the Palestine photographic exhibition. Elaine organises trips to Palestine in a personal and non-profit making capacity to let people see for themselves the situation in the West Bank and to meet with Israeli and Palestinian groups and individuals who are working for peace and justice in the region. Since 2006, Elaine has led 16 trips to the West Bank involving about 400 people.
At the successful Palestine photographic exhibition which took place from 6th to 8th of January in the Athenaeum, the Slaney News got talking to a New-Ross based woman, Noirin Healy-Magwa, who recently spent three months living and observing life in Palestine and Israel as a human rights observer through the World Council of Churches (WCC). The following is a short account of her visit by Noirin… My recent three-month stay in Palestine and Israel gave me first hand experience and insight into what life is like for people living under military occupation. I began to understand the sources of stress and fear which permeate every aspect of Palestinians’ lives, as they try desperately to carry on with ‘normal’ life, in spite of the many restrictions and obstacles put in their way. I was there as one of a team of human rights observers, called Ecumenical Accompaniers (EAs), through the Ecumenical Accompaniment Programme (EAPPI) of the World Council of Churches (WCC ). The programme was set up in 2002, in response to a call from the local churches of Jerusalem. For UK and Ireland it is coordinated by the Quakers in the UK. The role of EAs is to witness, record and report on what we see and experience in the areas we live in. In my time there, I lived in one of the smallest villages in the occupied Palestinian Territories (oPt) of the West Bank, situated in the north west of Palestine. This village has suffered greatly over the past 15
Noirín at a market in Hebron
years, at the hands of the Israeli settlers living in the illegal outposts who have taken over village land on the surrounding hilltops. In 2002 the villagers were forced to leave due to harassment from settlers and only returned when they were supported to do so by Israeli and international peace activists. Since 2003 the EAPPI programme has provided a protective presence in the village and the surrounding area. While there my daily work involved supporting the village community, accompanying children to school, visiting schools, villages and organisa-
tions in the surrounding area and participating in activities alongside the local community, such as the olive harvest in October, attending church with members of the community. It is difficult to get used to the constant presence of Israeli army personnel with their M16 rifles at every possible location across the West Bank at schools, in towns, villages and across the countryside. I observed some distressing scenes of house, school and playground demolitions some of which were funded through EU funding programmes, young students being detained by the military and the scenes after shootings of civilians at checkpoints and in villages. I also had opportunities to meet with Palestinian and Israeli peace groups who are working to bring a just and peaceful end to the occupation of Palestinian lands. I will be delivering talks to share my experiences in public and private venues throughout 2017. If interested in hosting a talk please contact us here in the Slaney News and we will put you in contact with Noirin. For more information see: www.eyewitnessblogs.com. n The West Bank Wall near Bethlehem.
Left: Noirín visited the scene of house, school and playground demolitions by the Israeli military.
Two of the exhibition organisers – Ger Deering, Ferns, and Ahmad Hamad, a Palestinian with Irish citizenship
John and Annette Byrne
A unique photographic exhibition “Imaging Palestine” took place from 6th to 8th of January 2017 in the Athenaeum in Enniscorthy. It was a collection of photographs taken during a number of West Bank trips over the past ten years by over 400 “ordinary” people, some from Co. Wexford, who had the opportunity of witnessing first-hand the humanity, dignity, resilience and resistance of the Palestinian people and their desire to live in peace – a just peace. Those who have travelled on these trips do not belong to any particular organisation, just a group of interested and caring people who believe in the Palestinian people’s right to live in peace in their own land.
Since the exhibition… Israel has recently approved 2,500 settler homes in the occupied West Bank following the election of Us President donald trump. The planned new homes approved by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defence Minister Avigdor Lieberman may be the largest number to have been given the green light since 2013, according to settlement watchdog Peace Now. Settlements in both the West Bank and east Jerusalem are viewed
as illegal under international law and major stumbling blocks to peace as they are built on occupied land. Most of the homes would be located within large settlement blocks in the West Bank. Around 100 are to be located in the settlement of Beit El near Ramallah. Trump has signalled strong support for Israel, and Israeli rightwing politicians have sought to take advantage, with hardliners calling for an end to the idea of a Palestinian state.
Meanwhile, closer to home, Sinn Féin MEP Liadh Ní Riada has expressed her concern at the decision by UCC University Management to prevent an academic conference debating the legitimacy of the state of Israel from taking place on campus. The conference, entitled International Law and the State of Israel: Legitimacy, Responsibility and Exceptionalism, was due to take place at UCC from March 31st to April 2nd, and would have featured speakers from all sides of the debate. n
EAPPI – a guide by Noirin healy-Magwa The Ecumenical Accompaniment Programme in Palestine and Israel (EAPPI) is a World Council of Churches (WCC) initiative which was established in 2002 in response to a request made by the Heads of Churches in Jerusalem ‘for the protection of our people’. Since then over 1000 EAs have been sent from more than 20 nations. The programme’s aims are to accompany both Palestinians and Israelis in their nonviolent actions on the ground and also their wider advocacy efforts to end the occupation. It does not proselytise. The role of participants in the programme includes: Monitoring and reporting violations of human rights and international humanitarian law Supporting acts of nonviolent resistance alongside local Palestinian and Israeli activists Offering protection through nonviolent presence Engaging in public policy advocacy Standing in solidarity with the churches and all those struggling against the occupation. In the UK and Ireland EAPPI is managed by Quaker Peace & Social Witness (QPSW), part of the Religious Society of Friends in Britain (Quakers). 20 EAs are sent each year, to join a wider international team, in four groups. QPSW coordinates this work on behalf of an ecumenical group
who fund, support, and publicise the programme. The role of the Ecumenical Accompanier is to work and live alongside people who are living under military occupation ‘accompanying’ them in their everyday lives. Their day to day work may include: Monitoring of checkpoints or agricultural gates in the ‘separation barrier’ built by the Israeli government, which separates many Palestinians from other parts of the West Bank, family, educational establishments, medical facilities and their own farm land. Accompanying children to school through checkpoints or past extremist Jewish settlements where they experience harassment. Taking part in Church services and activities showing solidarity with the dwindling Christian minority. Building relationships with Israeli peace groups and accompanying them in activities such as olive planting or demonstrations, as they call for an end to the occupation sometimes at great personal cost. Engaging in many different advocacy initiatives, both in the field, and on their return home, either publishing articles in newspapers and doing interviews, or writing letters to/meeting with elected representatives. n

Major plan for Co. Wexford launched Adamstown’s newly refurbished Coláiste Abbain secondary school provided a highly appropriate venue for the launch on 18th January of the much anticipated Wexford Local Economic and Community Plan. The ambitious 6-year Plan is the result of more than eighteen months work by the Wexford Local Community Development Committee (LCDC). Formed in 2015, the LCDC consists of 19 representatives from various agencies across County Wexford, including local authority members and officials, state agencies and people working in local development and community development, together with economic, cultural and environmental organisations. The LCDC has primary responsibility for co-ordinating, planning and overseeing local and community development funding and will deliver on this primarily through the implementation of the community elements of the six-year Local Economic and Community Plan (LECP). Through implementation of the Plan, the LCDC seeks to ensure avoidance of duplication in all publicly funded local and community interventions by bringing about greater integration and coordination of publicly funded services and pro-

Inheritance and Succession Planning thurs 2nd Feb at 7pm in Enniscorthy Library Most of us own things. grammes. The Local Economic and Community Plan (LECP) comprises of two integrated elements - a local economic element (prepared by the local authority); and a community element (prepared by the LCDC). The Plan’s policies and objectives are consistent with the County Development Plan, the Regional Spatial and Economic Strategies and policy initiatives under the Regional Action Plans for Jobs. The Wexford Plan is framed around six High Level Goals. These goals were identified and developed using evidence gathered in 2015 when the Council commissioned NUI Maynooth to develop the Wexford SocioEconomic Baseline Report. The data contained in this report has had a huge influence on the development of the objectives and actions outlined within the LECP. hLG1: Foster the culture of educational attainment and lifelong learning in County Wexford and provide opportunities to develop educational and workforce skills, to improve work readiness and access to employment. hLG2: Support and promote the development of socially inclusive, sustainable communities in County Wexford and ensure that all citizens enjoy optimal health and wellbeing. hLG3: Continue to develop and promote County Wexford as a great place to live, work and
visit. hLG4: Develop and market County Wexford as an outstanding business environment for starting, growing and attracting business. hLG5: Continue to protect and enhance our infrastructure and promote resource efficiency in order to create the right conditions for long term sustainable economic growth. hLG6: Protect and sensitively utilise our natural, built and cultural heritage and together with the Arts, realise their economic potential. The Wexford LECP highlights the need to ensure the economic development of the County. This aim is at the centre of all Wexford County Council policy and is a key priority for the Council. The occasion of the launch at the newly opened refurbished school included several demonstrations of cutting-edge technology, including 3-D printing courtesy of Belfast FAB LAB, coding workshops and laser cutting equipment. These growing technologies have uses in manufacturing, life sciences, craft and design and agriculture and the well-attended demonstrations throughout the afternoon highlighted how the use of state-of-the-art technology can be used to create the highly skilled workforce that Wexford will require over the coming

Mackin Travel to print 1,00o,000 tour brochures? Corcoran Print & design (the publisher of the slaney News) has over the years been fortunate to be involved in some very large print jobs but we’ve never been involved in a 1,000,000 print run but that may be about to change thanks to Enniscorthy and Wexford town based tour operator Mackin travel. Last year we designed and managed a print run of 840,000 tour brochures for Mackin’s. This year so far almost 500,000 brochures have been printed and Frank Mackin believes the eventual print run could exceed 1,000,000 for the first time. Mackin Travel uses a combination of inserts into national newspapers such as the Evening Herald, Sunday Times, Irish Independent, Irish News as well as An Post to deliver its brochures nationwide. All design work is done by Corcoran Print & Design here in Enniscorthy with some of the printing done locally by C&R Print, and the remainder by Boylan Print in Drogheda. If you didn’t receive a copy yet of Mackin’s tour brochure for 2017 (including fantasic

VET DIARY FOR FEB with the Moyne Veterinary Clinic
Joe Kavanagh, casts an eye over modern farming practice. It’s the beginning of February, spring is in the air and that means one thing to a country vet… busy, busy. The days are stretching, especially the evenings, you notice the difference and it’s great. Its a wonderful time of year with new life arriving on the farms. Farmers work hard, long, arduous hours staying up late at night calving and lambing, then doing their full day-time hours as per normal. With the way farming has gone there's less help available, bigger overheads and larger numbers of cows to milk or sheep to look after simply to stay afloat. Enniscorthy is a service town and has survived over the years because of the rich hinterland surrounding it. I feel privileged to travel out the country through the patchwork fields, rolling hills and easy valleys. But something fundamentally must change in our practices for farming and the land to come back to its former glory. If there's heavy rainfall you can see torrents of water flowing off the tilled fields onto the roads, into the rivers and rising these rivers to dangerous flood levels. If the humus layer of the soil (which is the top 5%) is working correctly it will hold 100 times its own volume of water… acting like a sponge soaking up that excess water. This was traditionally done by putting farmyard manure out on each field, rotating crops in different fields giving the land a break… it’s a living organism too and like us works best when in balance. Modern practices have changed dramatically and so has the way farmers are compelled to farm to make a living. New concepts are needed to help return to working with the land. Thankfully there are brilliant minds working and changing how we approach our necessity to make a living and leave the land better than we got it… one such guy is Graham Sait, an Aussie, who is pioneering how we can change out of the trudge to a more proactive and economically viable solution. He already has Dole, one of the largest producers of fruit and veg in the world, using his methods because they are more cost effective and produce better crops. He's working to get the humus layer, the living layer of the soil, back to full function… how? Partly by using friendly bacteria that when applied to the land help innoculate the soil, restoring what’s missing and allowing Mother Nature to flourish once more.
If you own a dog or dogs you are required under the Control of Dogs Act, 1986-2010 to do the following: Keep your dog under control at all times, this means the dog cannot leave your property unaccompanied and you must make sure it is securely kept in at night.
Ensure that all dogs under your control wear a collar bearing an identity tag with the name, address and contact details of the owner at all times. Some breeds such as Alsatians, Rottweilers, Japanese Akitas etc. must be securely on a lead and muzzled in public.
Each dog you own must have a licence or a general licence to cover all dogs in your possession.
Owners of dogs that have worried sheep will be obliged to pay compensation once they are traced.
Dog owners should also remember that farmers are legally permitted to shoot dogs straying onto their land.
For more information phone 053 9196313 or email environment@wexfordcoco.ie n
The very same bacteria are used by some to replenish the 'good microflora' for animals too at a very small cost. Some doctors I've listened to say 70-80 % of our immunity comes from the gut and restoring the right micro flora is key to bringing good health… to us, our animals, and the land. As the native American Indians have been saying for centuries, 'only when the last river and crop is polluted will we reallise that we can't eat money…' We owe it to our children and the animals in our care to give them the best chance… Prevention is always better than cure!! On another note, we say goodbye to Pippa Byrne our recently graduated veterinary nurse, who has gone to the UK to further her studies in nursing. We wish her well and hope that it’s a fruitful and rewarding venture for her. Meanwhile, as one door closes another opens, and we're very pleased to welcome on board Ciara McGrath another veterinary nurse to the practice. She's already putting her stamp on the place and we know she'll be a great addition to the team. n

View from the Hill War on Crime It would appear that the gardai are making inroads in the fight against crime. Recent actions by the force in intercepting millions of euros worth of drugs and seizing quantities of weapons is to be welcomed. It is frightening to realise that these crime gangs have access to weapons which are effectively war armoury. In times past the majority of illegally held weapons were in the category of pistols or something similar. Paramilitary groups did have heavier weapons but the average criminal avoided that scene. Our gardai are now facing armed groups every day of the week. Their task is a difficult one and hopefully they will be given the resources necessary to continue this war.
inCreases for PolitiCians I note that at the first sign of recovery of the economy our politicians award themselves a pay and expenses increase. Our TDs are getting an extra €15,000 and our councillors €1,000. There is, of course, nothing for our pensioners who were treated so badly by the previous government. And then they wonder why people are so cynical about politics and politicians. vulture funDs Vulture Funds, as we have come to know them, are causing havoc throughout this country. They are being allowed purchase thousands of mortgages for knock-down prices and subsequently sell them
on at huge profits. For instance, they will buy a €260,000 mortgage for about €90,000 and then demand the full €260,000 from the unfortunate occupant of the property. If the demand cannot be satisfied they then proceed to repossess the property and sell it on for a substantial profit. Apart from the fact that the entire operation is disgracefully weighted in favour of these billionaire funds, which up to recently paid little or no tax, the really disgusting part is that the banks who are selling off these mortgages have been bailed out to the tune of billions of euro by the Irish people. The fact that the same banks will not even consider giving a write-down to an individual mortgage holder which, in many cases, would allow people to stay in their homes seems not only grossly unfair but downright stupid. But like almost everything else in this country unless it adversely affects those in power we can expect things to remain the same for the foreseeable future. Driverless Cars I don’t know if I would trust such a thing as a driverless car, yet anyway. I imagine that sometime in the future, well after my day, they may become a regular feature on the road. I was amused to hear Senator Paddy Burke say recently that these vehicles would be a godsend for rural Ireland in the con-
text that they would get the lads home from the pub safely after a few pints. Paddy said it in a jocular sense but to be fair he did have a point. Expect before the next budget to hear the HealyRaes seeking grants for the purchase of these driverless vehicles for their constituents in Kerry on the grounds of road safety. Stranger things have happened and stranger grants have been paid. sCienCe anD teChnology Park The announcement that Enniscorthy is to get a Science and Technology Park at St Senan’s is more than welcome news. This may be the blockbuster development that this area needs. For many years there has been a quiet envy of the Wexford district and the ability of that corner of Co. Wexford to attract such business over other parts of the county. Minister of State Paul Kehoe made this announcement and no doubt played a pivotal role in ensuring its location on the periphery of Enniscorthy town. The potential of a science and technology park is huge and once it gets off the ground there is no knowing where it will end. Many high-end jobs can be created therefore keeping our highly educated young people at home and giving a boost to the local economy by the spending power which will result. A further aspect
of such a development is that if it is established and begins to expand it will encourage young people to continue in education to achieve a standard which will in time enable them to get a well paid local job rather than have to travel or indeed emigrate. This is good news to start 2017 and credit is due to all concerned. Bus eireann The crisis in Bus Eireann is serious for many reasons. This company provides a great transport system throughout the entire country stretching into rural areas where other companies dare not go. According to the company’s management, financial collapse is just around the corner. This is because of the lossmaking Express service they say and have suggested that employees take a huge hit to salaries and work conditions to save the company. The government stands idly by and Minister Shane Ross refuses to intervene but repeats the mantra that the state chequebook will not be taken out to assist the company any further than the present subsidy. There is a harsh reality here whether we like it or not. This company provides a public transport system in a country which has a miserable train service and no other public transport system. Many private companies such as Ardcavan Coaches and Wexford
Bus in the Co. Wexford area provide excellent transport services but at the end of the day they, quite correctly, are commercially driven and will only service profitable routes. They have no choice in this as no one will subsidise them. Bus Eireann is different. This company has to service all routes profitable or not. That is what public service is all about. It is not the fault of the residents of a small town somewhere that their particular route is not in itself profitable. These citizens are just as entitled to a public service as those who reside in heavily populated areas. In fairness this is what has been happening over the past few years - hence the unprofitability of Bus Eireann. The bottom line is that if we want a public transport service we have to collectively, through our taxes, pay for it. Public service of any description does not make a profit. Do our county councils, our hospitals, our schools make a profit? Of course not , they are public services. So is our public transport system. We should not be expecting the employees of the company to sacrifice their work conditions to keep the show on the road. n We are often asked: Who is the “View from the Hill” columnist? All we can say is that the author’s surname is NOT Doyle!

John Treacy, CEO of Sport Ireland commented, “The nationwide

Caroline gets motoring
audi a3 review by Caroline Kidd
audi pioneered the concept of a premium hatchback with the launch of the a3 back in 1996 and they’ve been refining the a3 ever since to make it a premium compact bestseller. a saloon is a more recent addition to the a3 range, but a considerably handsome one. Now on its third generation, the latest model has had some mild styling tweaks and the addition of new driver assistance systems and engines. Available as a saloon as tested, a 3 door or 5 door Sportback, all models now have a broader single frame grille and new lights front and back. The A3’s classy silhouette is retained and S Line models look particularly good with sportier bumpers and 18” alloys. The interior design of the Audi A3 is beautifully simple and minimalist. The materials used throughout are top

quality and the ‘virtual cockpit’ that replaces traditional instrument dials is now available for the first time in the A3. It’s a €2,450 option but comes as part of a tech pack that includes Audi Connect with SIM card, phone box with wireless charging and MMI Nav Plus. It adds the
wow factor and it is very simple and intuitive to use. The interior space in the A3 saloon is competitive for a compact saloon of this type, though rear headroom is more accommodating in the hatchback. The boot is 425 litres, which is actually larger than that of the hatchback, but
the space is more difficult to access because of the narrow opening. The A3 range kicks off with the 3 door priced at €27,810, the five door at €28,810 and the saloon at €29,810. Standard equipment includes 16” alloys, four electric windows, air

Caroline is a member of the irish motoring Writers’ association (imWa) and a jury member for irish Car of the year. you can follow her blog Changing lanes at www.changinglanes.ie. con, and a folding infotainment screen with Bluetooth connectivity and a rotary controller. SE trim adds 17” alloys, Apple Car Play and Android Auto, cruise control and rear parking sensors. S Line trim includes sportier bumpers, LED lights front and rear, 18” alloys, Audi Drive Select, and a flat bottomed steering wheel. There are petrol and diesel engines with power outputs from 110 to 184hp and Audi has just added a new three cylinder 1.0-litre turbo petrol engine to the A3 range. The best for economy is the 1.6TDI that’s capable of returning up to 74mpg. On the road, the refinement of this engine is impressive and the 110hp is plenty to confidently cruise and overtake. The Audi A3 is a smooth and agile drive, with virtually no body roll in the corners. It’s quiet in the
cabin with road, wind and engine noise well-suppressed. You can deselect the sports suspension on S Line models, which is probably advisable because the normal suspension has a firm enough edge to it. The Audi A3 saloon is Audi’s first compact saloon but it’s a great addition to the A3 range. If an A4 is out of reach price wise, the A3 saloon is definitely worth a look. The car is not cheap to buy and can get very expensive very quickly, but the quality and refinement is top notch – it’s a class act. model tested: Audi A3 Saloon 1.6TDI S-Tronic S Line Price: €38,800 Power: 110bhp 0-100km/h: 10.7 seconds Economy: 76mpg CO2 emissions: 98g/km Motor tax: €180 per year n

Skoda ireland – Motoring ahead ŠkoDa ireland recently announced a 20% volume growth in sales for 2016 versus 2015 in a record year which saw the brand deliver over 9,500 new vehicles. the growth has meant that ŠkoDa has retained its position as the sixth highest selling car brand in the country for the second year running, while they have increased their market share to 6.5%. New car turnover has increased by 29% from €115m to €148m and the turnover from sales of vehicle parts and accessories has increased 13% from €7.8 m to €8.8 m. A growing number of customers are also availing of the competitive ŠKODA finance offers and the company has announced that they have loaned over €105million to customers over the past twelve months, an increase of 48.9% on 2015. In addition to this record sales and finance performance, extensive building works have been rolled out over the last 12-18 months to completely transform the appearance of the ŠKODA dealer network at a cost of €12.5million. This comes on the back of ŠKODA producing their 19-millionth vehicle earlier this month at their factory
base in Mladá Boleslav, Czech Republic. In Ireland, the ŠKODA Octavia is the top performing model of the ŠKODA range with over 4,700 sales in 2016. The brand has also targeted a top five finish in 2017, a goal which will be boosted with the introduction of the brand’s first ever seven-seater SUV in March 2017, with the arrival of the all new ŠKODA KODIAQ. John Donegan, Brand Director at ŠKODA Ireland commented: “At ŠKODA we
are extremely optimistic for 2017. The new face of our dealer network will be the most modern of any car brand in Ireland and we will have some exciting new models for our customers to experience. It is a testament to the confidence of our Dealer Network also that they have such faith in the brand by investing €12.5million in their new showrooms.” In relation to the exceptional financial re s u l t s a n n o u n c e d , M r. Donegan also commented:
“Just under 50% of the cars sold by ŠKODA in Ireland are financed by ŠKODAFinance with two out of three ŠKODAs financed taking the PCP route. This year alone, ŠKODA Finance has financed 6,052 contracts and we’re looking forward to growing that number further in 2017.” For more information on the ŠKODA range or latest offers contact Donohoe Skoda at Quarrypark, Enniscorthy, 053 9242526, wwww.donohoeskoda.ie n
2016 – Sales Boom 2016 saw the biggest number of new car sales in ireland since the 2008 economic slump. in total there were 146,672 new cars registered in 2016, an almost 18% increase on 2015. The Society of the Irish Motor Industry (SIMI) says the increase was in line with expectations, adding that the strong new car sales tapered off somewhat in the latter half of last year. Imported used cars also had a bumper 2016 with SIMI putting this down to a number of factors including a stronger euro relative to sterling giving Irish importers greater purchasing power. In terms of Ireland’s most popular new car makers, there were more 2016 Toyotas registered in Ireland last year t h a n a n y o t h e r m a k e r. Hyundai came in second followed by Volkswagen, Ford and then Nissan. Interestingly, and perhaps showing Toyota’s popularity across a wide range of its brands, none of its models were among the top five selling models last year. That top five was made up of: Hyundai Tucson Volkswagen Golf Ford Focus Skoda Octavia Nissan Qashqai While the increase in overall car sales is often used as a barometer of positive economic activity, SIMI’s director general Alan Nolan says sales of work vehicles is probably a more accurate measure.
Looking at these sales, he explains that it’s also good news: Commercial vehicle registrations, which perhaps best reflect the level of activity in the economy, were also significantly up on 2015, with light commercial vehicle registrations finishing 18.3% up and heavy commercial vehicle registrations 31.3% ahead of last year. “As we move into 2017 and the new 171 registration period, the industry is anticipating a continuation of the strong performance seen during 2016 and is projecting similar registration numbers to last year,” he adds. SIMI also provides a county-by-county breakdown of where the most cars were bought last year and which parts of the country saw the biggest increase in sales. Looking at those figures, Roscommon saw the biggest spike in new car sales with 31% more new cars registered last year compared to 2015. Meath saw the second largest increase with a 24% jump while Waterford and Cork increased by 23%. In terms of the share of new cars registered, Dublin dwarfs all other counties, accounting for 40% of all the new cars sold last year. n

rugby news gavin kennedy's 75th-minute penalty steered ashbourne to their first ever ulster Bank allireland Junior Cup title as they overcame defending champions enniscorthy 22-20 in a pulsating final at Donnybrook at the end of January in a tremendous advertisement for irish junior club rugby. Ashbourne twice already this season but it was not to be on this ocassion. Enniscorthy can be proud of their showing as they attempted to win their third Junior Cup crown in four years, and they more than played their part with three tries in a hugely memorable decider displaying precision, pace and passion. – Joseph Doyle

Chin Up!
lee Chin and his team of Jolly green giants - eoin moore, linda Bolger and shauna kelly became the first team in Wexford to win fittest superstars at Whites hotel on friday 20th January. The concept based on the TV series Ireland’s Fittest Family saw members of the Wexford Senior Hurling team and members of the Wexford Camogie teams come together in mixed teams of 4 to take on challenges like Hang Loose, The Box Jump, The Cycle Challenge and The Wall all to raise funds to help defray some of the costs of preparing the teams for this year`s championships. The packed function room at Whites Hotel is indicative
of the level of support in the county for all our players with approximately 600 tickets sold and all those in attendance enjoyed and marvelled at the level of fitness of our young men and women. An excellent evening’s entertainment, a most worthwhile fundraiser and seriously good workouts for our teams going into league and championship. They were all winners with the minimum of margins between the teams but in the end there emerged a deserving winner in The Jolly Green Giants who were presented with a cheque to be given to a charity of their choice. Well done to all concerned - a new and innovative concept that no doubt will capture the imagination of many before the year is out. – maria nolan

it was a night of celebration for local artist Caroline Jacobsz at the Presentation Centre on friday 13th January as her exquisite collection episodic memory was launched by elizabeth Whyte. Introduced by Lisa Byrne, Elizabeth complimented the unusual work of the Artist, marrying the traditional with the contemporary, capturing past, present and future, with Impressionists similarities, particularly in the London piece, one of Elizabeth’s favourites. Caroline’s stunning pieces are worked on old sheets that have been in her family for up to 50 years, some of them belonging to her grandmother. Imaginatively employing the use of mixed media such as drawing, tracing, rubbing, sewing and machine embroidery, Caroline’s work evokes
memory and tell stories of emigration, travel and life choices. This is Caroline’s first solo exhibition at The Presentation
Centre but her work was also part of the Open Call Exhibition there in 2016. Inspiring and intricate, these thought-provoking pieces are

As the recipient of the award, Watchorn will create a new body of work throughout the period of January – December 2017, to be exhibited in January 2018. Katie Watchorn works with a diverse range of agrarian materials such as animal fibre blankets, fatty products and milk to create tactile pieces illuminating the nuances and materiality of Irish rural farming. Drawing on her own experiences and upbringing in this community, Watchorn is interested in the care and feeling of protection which envelops a farm’s livestock and the constant
Lions Club Exhibition

Wexford lions Club has always strived to support community spirit and co-operation, and this display of local artistic talent has since become a longstanding and much loved tradition, reflecting the diverse artistic skills and talents of Wexford and the surrounding area. Wexford Lions Club is made up of men and women who volunteer their time to humanitarian causes in their local community. They work together in the belief that those who live in a community are in the best position to know who needs help or support and why, and their motto “we serve” remains
their fundamental philosophy. Not only do the members help people in need, but they also gain the opportunity to develop personal friendships. As one of the most popular events at Wexford Arts Centre, the response to the open call for work has been remarkable again this year, with over two hundred applications received. The open brief truly grants participants the freedom to create exciting and original artwork, allowing them to tell their own stories. This can be seen through a varied range of subjects such as urban and rural narratives, personal experiences, abstraction and even pure imagination. everyone with a passion or an interest to share. It is also an opportunity for artists at various stages of their careers, to present and realise their work in a formal gallery setting. As such, the exhibition is more than just a show of art; it’s a community which welcomes artists of every age, skill and interest level. As an ‘open show’, all are welcome and free to create and display their work. Once again, the upper gallery will be dedicated to the work of the ‘young lions’, a very promising group of budding artists who amaze us with their creativity every year. The Lions Club annual exhibition encourages a sense of support and community, an ethos mirrored by the Wexford Arts Centre; arts for all, arts for life. The exhibition will run in the lower and upper galleries of Wexford Arts Centre until Saturday 18th February 2017, and gallery hours are Monday to Saturday, from 10am-5pm. attempts to prevent sickness within the herd. Her ongoing research involves visiting and recording farming environments in County Carlow, and recording her father’s experience on animal husbandry and contemporary Irish farming which stretches back to the early 1970’s through to the 1980’s dairy farming in Ireland. Watchorn extracts and reappropriates the utilitarian materials found on her father’s farm, adjusting their contents and use to create hybrid forms. For her exhibition at Wexford Arts Centre, Watchorn will create a body of work concerned with the placement of these utilitarian, rural materials within the formal environment of a public gallery. With a primary focus on materials and process, she will combine organic substances with rough, agriculturally-based raw materials including cast iron, rubber, galvanise and powder coating. Owing to her familiarity with the constructs and materiality of rural life, sites such as steel yards and creameries which are central to the agricultural community will be utilised as points of departure. The seem-
ingly improvised yet functional and adaptable nature of materials and objects on a farm, the kinetic energies of machinery and its transformation of the landscape will be considered. Through this dialogical body of work, Watchorn will highlight this ongoing process of contemporary and ancestral Irish life and tradition which is often understated, undervalued and overlooked. Katie Watchorn received a BA (Hons) in Fine Art Painting from the National College of Art and Design in 2014. In recent years, Watchorn has exhibited in VISUAL, Carlow; The Niland Gallery, Galway; Foundation 14, Offaly; and Hodgeschool der Kunsten Den Haag, The Netherlands, and won the George Berkeley Gold Medal Undergraduate Awards and the Artlinks Bursary Award from Carlow County Council.
