All the signs are positive that Dunnes are genuinely trying to sell their old premises on Rafter Street. We understand they are selling some of their other empty premises around the country also. We are assured there are no restrictions on who can buy the Enniscorthy premises and the auctioneer reports good interest so far with several viewings having taken place already. So it seems only a matter a time before a major retailer comes to town although with previous planning for division into three commercial units the possibility of a number of smaller retailers operating from there cannot be ruled out either. n

THE SLANEY NEWS IS NOW AVAILABLE IN 230 OUTLETS!

It’s been a mixed bag on the retail front in Enniscorthy in recent weeks. Our cover page has a positive report on the old Dunne’s Stores building on Rafter Street. On page 21 we carry a report of a recent meeting, a joint initiative of the Enniscorthy Business Association (EBA) and Enniscorthy & District Chamber, which will hopefully lead to a Town Team being set up and a comprehensive retail plan for the town being formulated. The opening tomorrow of M & M Meats on Rafter Street is a welcome development also. However that good news is balanced by the closure of SportsSavers on Rafter Street. All of us should try and support our local retailers as much as possible in the run-up to Easter and beyond. – Frank Corcoran

Gmail accounts immediately accessed by Hackers Cybercriminals have been using specially crafted URLs to trick even tech-savvy people into entering their Gmail credentials on a phishing website. Once an account has been compromised, the attackers immediately access it and start targeting the victim’s contacts. The malicious emails come from one of the targeted user’s contacts and they appear to carry a PDF document that can be previewed directly from Gmail. However, clicking the “attachment,” which is actually an embedded image, takes the user to a Gmail phishing page. The URL of this phishing page starts with “data:text/html,https://accounts/google.com,” which could lead many users to believe the site is legitimate, especially since the web browser does not display any certificate warning. The legitimate-looking part of the URL is followed by white spaces, which prevent the user from seeing any suspicious strings, and an obfuscated script that opens a Gmail phishing page in a new tab. This method has been used for several months and even tech-savvy users have admitted taking the bait. In recent attacks, experts noticed that the cybercriminals immediately accessed the compromised accounts and used them to send out phishing emails to the victim’s contacts. It’s unclear if the process is automated or if the attackers are manually accessing the compromised accounts as soon as they obtain the credentials. In one case, a school system administrator reported that the attackers turned legitimate messages from the victim’s inbox into phishing emails. Enabling two-factor authentication (2FA) on Gmail should prevent phishers from accessing accounts once they’ve obtained the credentials. However, experts pointed out that if the attackers immediately access the compromised account, they could also phish the 2FA code. Google has been aware of these attacks since at least March 2016. A few days ago, the Chrome security team suggested introducing a “Not Secure” tag in the address bar for data:, blob: and other URLs that may be abused for phishing attacks. Ferns Computer Services has been in business in Ferns since May 2007. Established by David Pohludek, it has a huge clientele base all over Co. Wexford and beyond.

Enniscorthy Tidy Town Awards Smart Kidz Preschool now enrolling for Sept 2017, Jan 2018 and April 2018. Offering 2 Free ECCE Scheme years for children aged 3-6. Children from age 2 ½ years also accepted. There will be an option to drop early or collect late – Booking is advisable for this. The preschool is ideally located in the country just off the main N11 Enniscorthy to Wexford road close to Oylegate, Glenbrien, Bree, Ballymurn, Brownswood and just 7 minutes from Enniscorthy. Our aim is to provide a home-away-from-home experience for your child where they can play and explore outdoors during nature walks and while planting in the garden. They will get the chance to meet a variety of animals and see vintage tractors as they come to visit. A broad curriculum of activities will be delivered using the themes and principles of Aistear and Siolta which will be predominantly play based however the children in the year before they start school will also get to explore and learn using Montessori materials. There will be many different exciting events throughout the year.

A number of worthy recipients received their prizes, under different categories, at an enjoyable function in the IfA centre, Enniscorthy, on the night of 1st march 2017, organised by the Enniscorthy tidy town Association. C l l r. B a r b a r a A n n e Murphy represented the Enniscorthy Municipal District Council and presented the prizes to the winners. The District Manager, Liz Hore, and the other councillors were involved in a Civic Reception in Enniscorthy Castle for the organisers of the National Housing Conference on energy

efficient homes which was held in Enniscorthy on 2nd March. Billy Murphy, Chairman of Enniscorthy Tidy Town Association, in a short address spent some time on the Association’s involvement in the National Tidy Town Competition and indicated, as they were on prominent display, the Bronze Medals Enniscorthy won in 2015 and 2016. He felt that, with a little more effort and community participation, a Silver Medal is attainable in the near future. Cllr. Murphy congratulated all the winners and said a

contribution was needed from all sections of the community in order to achieve ultimate success – householders, business premises, local government, state agencies and of c o u r s e t h e Ti d y To w n Association. Cllr. Murphy then presented the prizes. The ceremony went off very smoothly as Aidan O’Brien had every prize lined up so precisely that it prevented any hint of a Hollywood Oscar type debacle happening here in Enniscorthy. Special Endeavour Awards were given to people in recognition of their

work in maintaining St. Senan’s Old Graveyard, the Grotto in the Shannon and general contribution to the tidiness of Enniscorthy. Before the function ended, Cllr. Oliver Walsh, Chairman of Enniscorthy Council, turned up fresh from his onerous duties at the Civic Reception and in a few brief words thanked the Committee for the invitation and commended everyone who gets involved in keeping their own area clean and tidy. The ceremony concluded with light refreshments. – Sean Doyle

Focus on mental health… onE conVERSAtIon cAn SAVE A lIfE… county Wexford’s “ASK” mental health campaign gets under Way.

THE fACTS:

 In 2015, Wexford County had the highest suicide rate in Ireland.  In 2016, Marine Watch Wexford volunteers recorded 40 incidents relating to self-harm and people contemplating suicide on Wexford Bridge.  I n 2 0 1 6 , G o o d 2 Ta l k Wexford provided over 3,000 counselling sessions and currently has a waiting list for people seeking counselling sessions.  1 in 3 of us will be affected by mental health issues at some point in our lives – either directly, or as a family member.

The Mayor of Wexford, Cllr. Frank Staples, launched the “ASK” mental health campaign at Wexford County Council headquarters on 29th March. The launch was the culmination of months of work by the Mayor and a committee to raise awareness of mental health throughout the county and to encourage more transparency and openness regarding depression and other factors affecting mental well-being. The “ASK” campaign takes the form of a series of 4 posters. Each poster depicts a person removing their “happy-face mask” to show their “unhappy face” underneath – indicating their true feelings. Each poster carries the tag line “ASK – one conversation can save a life”. The posters are designed to encourage those who may be struggling or feeling down to ask for help while at the same

time encouraging those who may be concerned about a friend, relative or colleague to simply ask that person if they are feeling OK or would like to talk. Supporting organisations include Wexford GAA, Wexford IFA, Wexford Vintners, Wexford Chamber of Commerce, FAI Wexford, IRFU Wexford, and Wexford’s Public Participation Network. The initiative also enjoys the support of Wexford County Council and the HSE, while many local organisations who work in the area of mental well-being such as Good 2 Talk, Wexford Marinewatch, and We x f o rd M e n t a l H e a l t h Association have also rowed in behind the initiative. The thought-provoking posters will soon be seen in schools, shops, offices, workplaces, pubs, nightclubs, public buildings and sports centres throughout Co. Wexford. n

Mental health protest in Enniscorthy last month.

the commitment on implementing the Vision for change from the current government is failing miserably in co. Wexford and the south east. that's the view of local cllr Johnny mythen who was one of the organisers of a mental health protest in Enniscorthy last month. ‘The closure of St. Senan's Mental Hospital coupled with the closure of our 24/7 acute units have left mental health services in a state of crisis,’ the

Sinn Fein rep said, ‘Under-funding, under-staffing, bed closures and increasing mental health issues, such as self harming and suicide ideation, are stretching mental health services beyond their present capacity creating unworkable and unsustainable conditions on the ground for staff and patients alike.’ ‘The latest announcement of reducing acute mental hospital beds from 16 to 6 in Waterford is another example of dimin-

ishing the immediate emergency care that people need.’ ‘The recent spate of suicides in our own county along with unacceptable time-frames for appointments, particularly children, should set alarm bells ringing in government circles. They should concentrate their efforts to implement the Vision for Change which is now over ten years old and reinstate Wexford's 24/7 acute mental health service as promised in 2009.' n

Protecting our services print. We believe the economic future and survival of our rural towns, villages and Rosslare Euro Port are dependant on this rail link.”

Sinn Féin Councillor, Johnny Mythen, at the front of the protest at Enniscorthy Train Station against the possible closure of the rail line south of Gorey.

local Sinn féin councillor, Johnny mythen, has been very active in recent months leading the campaign to protect vital local transport services. A p ro t e s t w a s h e l d a t Enniscorthy train station on 4th March against expected cost cutting measures to local rail services. Speaking at the event local Cllr Mythen said that rail closures would hamper our economic recovery and any attempts to downgrade or close services between Gorey and Rosslare must be strongly resisted. “A recent internal CIE review states that rail services south of Gorey could be earmarked for closure,” the Sinn Fein rep said,

“The effect this serious loss of services would have on towns like Enniscorthy, Wexford and their hinterlands would be catastrophic… not to mention the choking of Rosslare Euro Port which is the third busiest roll-onroll-off port and has the second biggest number of off-boarding foot passengers in the country.” “Successive governments have not grasped the importance of our rail services… Seven years ago it was Fianna Fail who allowed the Rosslare to Waterford line to close, now Fine Gael are pursuing the same policy.” “Rail lines are the future and the answer to alleviating a large proportion of our carbon foot-

buS SERVIcES The continuous underfunding of our national public transport systems is resulting in the abandonment of our rural towns and villages, according to Cllr Mythen who was speaking at a public meeting on the threats to the Wexford to Dublin bus route in Enniscorthy last month. “The proposed downgrading of Bus Eireann route 2 Wexford to Dublin will be detrimental to communities across Wexford from Rosslare to Gorey,” the Sinn Fein rep said, “The state subsidies provided to Bus Eireann in 2008 totalled €48 million. In 2017 it is €40 million. That's a staggering annual cut of €500,000 per year…” “Our public service buses are being subsidised by 12% from state revenue. This is miniscule when compared with other foreign nations such as Holland (49%), Switzerland (51%) and Belgium (78%).” “Every free pass customer public transport carries the Department of Social Protection pays Bus Eireann €4.60 when the true cost is €11.60. However some private companies are given up to 70% of the cost of their free passenger travel, creating a serious divide and delibe r a t e l y c re a t i n g u n f a i r competition.” Sinn Fein MEP Liadh Ni Riada and Michael McCommisky from the National Bus and Rail Union also spoke at the well attended meeting in the Riverside Park Hotel, Enniscorthy. n

EHRS remembers the Fenians On Saturday 11th March Enniscorthy Historical Re-enactment Society diversified into yet another period of our history, gathering at the Corrig Graveyard, outside Enniscorthy, to present arms at the graveside of `an old Fenian` Charlie Farrell to mark the 150th Anniversary of the Fenian Rising on 5th March 1867. Charlie Farrell is mentioned in the Witness Statement of Thomas Doyle, Wafer Street, in 1916 where he says, ‘Early in 1913, Charlie Farrell, an old Fenian and very old native of Enniscorthy, died in Tom Hayes where he stopped. At that time Seamus Doyle and Larry de Lacey, both I.R.B. members, were great pals of the old Fenian. Charlie Farrell was buried in the old Corrig Graveyard about one and a half miles outside the town looking down on the River Slaney. All members of the I.R.B. marched at his funeral.’

EHRS participated in the St. Patrick’s Day Parades in both Bunclody and Enniscorthy and on Sunday 2nd April were invited to be part of a commemoration at Kilcloney Wood, Mitchelstown, where Peter O`Neill Crowley, the last Fenian was shot and killed. On Easter Sunday, 16th April, they are at New Ross for the annual 1916 Easter event and on Easter Monday at home in Enniscorthy where a re-enactment will take place at Market Square after Mass and Parade to Market Square and afterwards a 2016 Time Capsule will be presented by Chairman of the group, Ray Murphy, to the Athenaeum to be housed there and opened at the next significant 1916 Anniversary in the town. On 22nd and 23rd April they are off to play their part in the Battle of Ashbourne weekend. The 24th April is Republic Day and will be commemorated at Enniscorthy by EHRS with a march to Market Square and reading of the Proclamation and on 28th/29th/30th April members of the group will join with our friends in Mayo for a commemoration of the Races of Castlebar – in Humbert’s Footsteps. Naked Music at the Pres! Popular singer/songwriter Eleanor McEvoy delighted The Presentation Centre audience on 18th March with a fantastic performance from this really talented Irish artist now living in Rosslare. Eleanor’s powerful voice, eloquent melody and moving lyrics come together in what can truly be described as Naked

Music – the title of her most recent album. It is an amazing collaboration between this most gifted Irish songwriter and acclaimed English painter Chris Gollon who has created 22 paintings inspired by the music of the album. On Saturday night Eleanor treated us to an eclectic mix of old and new including the ever

popular Woman’s Heart, I Wanna Look Like Me, Deliver Me From What You Do, Sophie – a dark number used now in the treatment of young anorexics and Harbour which she dedicated to the late rescue helicopter pilot Dara Fitzpatrick. She also gave us a wonderful glimpse of her current project – the songs of the famous 18th century Irish songwriter Thomas Moore with her jazzed up renditions of Oft in the Stilly Night and The Minstral Boy, saying that she is obsessed with the man and his music and is also planning to do a TV documentary about him which she described as ‘a bit like pushing an elephant up a hill’. Gifted musician that she is, Eleanor concluded with O’Carolan’s Concerto on the violin, a traditional number on the fiddle and an Edith Piaf piece on piano – what an amazing talent and how wonderful to be able to see her right here on our doorstep at The Presentation Centre. – Maria Nolan

Enniscorthy Credit Union very kindly hosted the official launch on 22nd March of Enniscorthy Musical Society’s (EMS) production of "Little Shop of Horrors". And they also very kindly presented EMS with a cheque for €1,500 towards the substantial costs of the pro-

duction. Without the support of such a generous sponsor, EMS would find it difficult to put on such an ambitious and spectacular production like “Little Shop of Horrors”. Speaking at the launch, Bernie Morrissey, representing Enniscorthy Credit Union,

spoke of how proud the Credit Union is to assist Enniscorthy Musical Society in this way. Bernie finished by saying, “On behalf of Ennniscorthy Credit Union I want to wish you all the very best of luck with the show. As they say in the industry – Break a Leg!” n

ENNISCORTHY MUSICAL SOCIETY presents

Maria Mihalikova and Nadlin Mielue at the Blind Collaborations Launch at the Sky In The Ground

The Orchard bears fruit

In the summer of 2016, over 50 people signed up for the “Blind Collaborations” music project for charity, facilitated by Brendan Carthy of Orchard Recording in Enniscorthy. Their names were pulled out of a hat and put into groups, and each group given a half day slot to come in and record a song from scratch! Every person had the opportunity of nominating their own charity of choice, and the proceeds of this album will be split equally between all of those charities.

The resulting CD was launched at a well-attended and enthusiastic event on 30th of March upstairs at The Sky In The Ground in Wexford town. Brendan Carthy remembers the recordings very clearly, “Each weekend last summer was filled up with these sessions, with some weekends even covering up to 4x5 hour sessions to get through the great numbers who took part! It was very inspiring working with all the people who took part and witnessing the amazing level of creativity, tal-

ent and generosity shown by all!” Brendan hopes to sell lots of these CDs so everyone’s charity gets something worthwhile and if it’s a success he says, “we might even do another one next year!” For more information on this project and the charities nominated by the musicians visit facebook.com/ The.Orchard.Recording.Studio or get in touch with the studio on 087-9523253. The CD can be bought by contacting 087-9523253. n

PADDY CASEY Music, 15th April 2017. After a five year hiatus, Paddy Casey returned last year with his fourth album the secret life of. It was recorded, produced and mixed at home in Paddy’s kitchen by Paddy and Pat Donne. Pat worked on the first album amen (so be it), as well as on the demos for all the other albums. “Pat is responsible for me not throwing away a lot of songs, ‘Saints and Sinners’ included. This will be my first completely independent record, it’s called the secret life of because it’s a throwback to a recording style I used to have before I signed a record deal”. “I've also been working with a dance writer/producer called Blujacker on various tunes and songs... one of which appears on the album (Light Song).” Paddy finished touring his third album addicted to Company in mid 2009 and decided then that it was time to make an album on his own, without a label. He wanted to let the songs come naturally, but found that, almost immediately, they came along in droves. So he began recording them all over the next few years, and in the last 6 months he chose the 11 tracks that make up the new album the secret life of. “The best thing about this album is that I veered off in any direction the wind carried me. I let my mind wander around and had fun, I suppose I had no one looking over my shoulder or watching the clock. In some ways it was like going back to the start, when I used to experiment lots on a four-track making any kind of music I felt like on the day. If there is a theme it’s definitely something to do with freedom… On songwriting Paddy says: “I am driven to record and write songs, I always have been...I've been recording bits and pieces since I was 9 or 10. I always thought that musicians were my politicians, teachers, religious leaders etc. I don't even have to wonder about it, it’s like breathing, it’s not really something I can switch off.”

Bega’s Charity Day needs your support Bega Barber on Enniscorthy’s Wafer Street has been running major charity events in recent years and that tradition continues on 24th April as Bega will be fundraising for two little brothers, Ciaran and Cathal Martin from Wicklow, who have been diagnosed with lateinfantile Metachromatic Leukodystrophy (MLD) which is a rare, genetic illness with no known cure. Cathal was born a perfectly healthy boy in May 2014 and was reaching all his milestones like any other little child. His parents, Leslie and Lynda, first noticed a problem when Cathal was having problems walking. After multiple trips to the doctor and Tallaght hospital Cathal was diagnosed with MLD in December last year. He is now almost 3 years old. As a result of this illness he cannot walk, or even move very much. He sits in a customised, fully-supported chair provided by Enable Ireland. Cathal’s muscles are so weak that he cannot feed himself, chew or swallow and now he has to fed through a nasogastric (NG) tube. The rate of deterioration for Cathal has been terrifyingly fast and he may lose what little is left of his ability to speak very soon. As Leslie and Lynda were slowly coming to terms with Cathal’s diagnosis they were

Check out the Facebook page “Cogs and Kiwi” to learn about, and keep up to date, with the young boys’ heartbreaking story.

Leslie and Lynda Martin with their young, terminally-ill children Ciaran and Cathal a.k.a. ‘Cogs’ and ‘Kiwi’ who will benefit from Bega Barber’s Charity Day advised to get Ciaran, Cathal’s baby brother, tested for the same condition. On 28 February doctors told them the heart-breaking news that Ciaran too has MLD. Tallaght Hospital arranged for Ciaran to be tested for eligibility to take part in a clinical trial in Milan. On 7th March

(Ciaran’s 1st birthday), he was flown to Milan and underwent a battery of tests and is now eligible for The Gene Therapy Clinical Trial. This has given a ray of hope in what has been a very dark time for the family. As Cathal is already displaying significant symptoms of MLD he is not eligible for the Trial.

Ciaran is now beginning a six-month treatment plan starting with an intense Gene Therapy programme, and a course of chemotherapy and he will require 24 hour family support and care. The Martins plan is to have one parent with Ciaran in Italy and the other will stay at home to look after Cathal’s complex medical

needs and also to look after their other child – a 4-year-old daughter. Leslie and Lynda’s goal is to save Ciaran's life whilst keeping Cathal as comfortable as possible for the rest of his tragically short life. They need to raise funds so that they can provide Ciaran

with the support and care he requires whilst undergoing his intense treatment programme. There are significant costs and challenges involved with caring for two very sick children in two different countries and all support would be gratefully appreciated by the Martins. Bega Barber is holding a charity day on Monday 24th April for Ciaran and Cathal. Volunteer barbers are very welcome and live music will be provided on the day. All haircuts on the day will be by donation – minimum €10. Bega has a donation box in the premises to allow people contribute any time up to 24th April. Donations will be counted on live video at the end of that day so everyone will know how much was raised. Bega has invited some guest barbers and they have agreed to come and join in on that day. Bega is also holding a raffle in aid of Cogs and Kiwi, tickets €10 and prizes will be: 1. A year’s free haircuts from Bega Barber. 2. €50 gift voucher from Bega Barber. 3. A set of gel, wax, cologne aftershave and luxury beard oil from Bega Barber. So please spread the word to let as many people as possible know about Bega’s worthy fundraising event on 24th April. n

there is good news on the local food tourism front as cedra (commission for the economic development of rural areas) funding has been made available by the dept of agriculture to help develop enniscorthy as a food tourism destination. the funding will enable the town to develop a brand image, develop a threeyear strategy, and create a stateof-the-art website. the website will be: www.enniscorthyfoodietown.ie and is nearing completion with animated video, responsive content and e-commerce platform for selling tickets for local, foodrelated events. One of the first steps on the road to creating a “foodie” town was a Food Tourism Idea

Generation session which was held on 15th March at the Enniscorthy & District Chamber offices in Templeshannon. All food-related businesses were welcome to attend and a sizeable percentage took the opportunity to attend and have a creative input. Among those joining the Slaney News at the event were representatives from The Wilds, Impresso, The Holy Grail, Galo Chargrill, The Cotton Tree, Treacys Hotel, AIB, Farmers’ Market, Enniscorthy Municipal District, etc. The session was facilitated by O Connell Marketing which is currently working with Wexford County Council on the initiative to develop and market Enniscorthy as a Food Tourism destination.

A guest speaker at the session was Anthony O’Toole who i s F a i l t e I re l a n d ’ s F o o d C h a m p i o n f o r We x f o rd . Anthony introduced himself and explained Failte Ireland’s Food Tourism Plans for 2017 and highlighted some current and future food tourism trends. A lot of suggestions were put forward by the enthusiastic participants at the session and many of these will now be part of the three-year strategy currently being developed to make Enniscorthy a mecca for the “culinary conscious tourist”. Jean O Connell also took the opportunity to announce plans for this year’s Rockin’ Food Festival which will take place over the Bank Holiday Weekend, 4th-6th August. n

Daniel O’Donnell’s Anam Cara last month the excitement was palpable at anam cara, the luxury b&b on the bruce river at carrigabruce, enniscorthy, as affable owners moira fowler and michael murphy popped open the bubbly and sat back to enjoy the Daniel & Majella B&B Road Trip on rte. And their excitement was understandable because their B&B featured on the popular road show. Well known singer Daniel O`Donnell and his wife Majella stayed overnight at the premises, described in one review as Irish hospitality with 5 Star American standards. The

Donegal duo were charmed by the beautiful home that has style, elegance and oodles of taste and yet is very much a home from home for those who stay there. Moira and Michael are warm and welcoming and pride themselves on the fact that their customers feel more like friends than paying guests and are encouraged to pop into the kitchen and help themselves to a cuppa and a sandwich whenever they feel like it. In fact Moira took great delight in showing me a photograph of Daniel in her kitchen ironing Majella’s blouse!

Moira Fowler and Michael Murphy of Anam Cara, luxury B&B, Enniscorthy, enjoying the Daniel & Majella B&B Road Trip on RTE as Daniel visits Vinegar Hill with local Falconer, Jim O’Connor.

Since the couple took up residence at Anam Cara little over a year ago they have totally transformed both the house and the grounds and indeed calling it a B&B, even a luxury B&B, is doing it an injustice. Having spent over thirty years in the States, Moira knows everything there is to know about customer service and is getting rave reviews on Trip Advisor and Booking.com. Her warm, friendly manner endears her to visitors and no job is too big or too small for herself and Michael, they will go to great lengths to make your

stay the very best it can be and you won’t get better than that. But don’t just take my word for it, if you missed the original airing, you can find it easily on the RTE Player. Ross Road Falconer, Jim O’Connor and his birds, also featured on the programme and viewers were treated to a surprise as the dynamic couple visit Vinegar Hill. Thank you Moira and Michael for showing me your beautiful home and for putting not just Anam Cara but Enniscorthy on the map and on national TV. – Maria Nolan

Heather blazing a trail! thursday 23rd february was indeed a busy day in enniscorthy as mary o’rourke entertained at the library, and minister for arts, heritage, regional and rural affairs heather humpheys toured the athenaeum. It was a long day for the Minister and her entourage arriving at the Athenaeum at 8.15pm with Minister Paul Kehoe TD, Michael D’Arcy TD, Cllr Paddy Kavanagh and Cllr Kathleen Codd Nolan, having visited several sites in the county including the Wexford Arts Centre and the Forge Craft and Design Centre, before arriving in Enniscorrthy to view the Athenaeum and the Library. She was greeted and welcomed to the Athenaeum by Chairman, Tony McClean, and members of the Athenaenum Committee and taken on a tour of the 1916 Museum and the Auditorium. Tony gave the Minister a detailed account of the Rising

in Enniscorthy pointing out areas of interest, along with drawing her attention to artifacts like the Enniscorthy Battalion Flag and the Volunteer Scroll of Honour. Cllr Paddy Kavanagh, Chairman of Wexford County Council, presented the Minister with the special 1916 pin before leading her up the famous staircase, where Hilton Edwards and Miceal Mac Liammoir first met, and into the beautifully restored auditorium. The Minister said that she was well pleased with the way government money had been spent on the iconic building and before taking her leave she wished Tony McClean and the committee every success going forward. Tony of course didn’t let her depart without mentioning the fact that more money would be gratefully received to further enhance the viability and sustainability of this historic building at the heart of Enniscorthy. – Maria Nolan

Enniscorthy Historical Reenactment Society formed a unique Enniscorthy Guard of Honour for the visitors as they entered our beautiful medieval fortress and caused a stir in 1798 attire complete with Pikes and Muskets, with all of those attending stopping to chat, admire and have a photo taken with the group. Included was f o r m e r P re s i d e n t o f t h e European Parliament, Pat Cox, who wanted the photo forwarded to him and expressed a desire to visit again for the reenactment of the Battle of Vinegar Hill. Mr. Cox is a reenactment enthusiast having seen some in the States including the Battle of Gettysburg. MC for the event, the newlyappointed Town Manager, Liz Hore, complimented Moira O’Gorman, Rory O’Connor and the Castle staff, saying that as a newcomer to the town she was hugely impressed with the magnificent venue. Liz also thanked the Holy Grail restau-

rant for the most splendid and colourful array of fabulous food and called on County Manager Tom Enright to address the audience. Tom was lavish in his praise for Michael Bennett and another Enniscorthy man, Tomas O’Leary, saying that they have put Enniscorthy and Wexford County Council ahead of the posse in relation to energyefficient, affordable housing. President of Enniscorthy Chamber, John Burke O’Leary, complimented everyone involved with bringing the Conference to Enniscorthy and invited all to enjoy their stay in our beautiful, historic, musical, cultural and literary town and to be sure to make a return trip. Architect, Tomas O’Leary, said that he never dreamed that he would be back in his home town of Enniscorthy speaking to an audience in the Castle. Tomas, co-founder of MosArt, has been living with his wife and two daughters in a passive house since 2005 and is i m m e n s e l y p ro u d t h a t Enniscorthy will have the first scheme of passive housing which is already under construction at the Moyne. Liz Hore brought proceedings to a close thanking all for coming and inviting all

to partake of the delicious banquet and enjoy the wonderful Castle prior to attending at the Riverside Park at 8.30pm for the Conference Banquet. – Maria Nolan Opposite L-R: John Carley, Fr. Seeking retail excellence all parties with an interest in the future of retailing in enniscorthy came together on 23rd march for a meeting in the riverside park hotel, and to hear david fitzsimons of retail excellence ireland offer his advice on what enniscorthy needs to do to revitalise the town. The meeting, which was a joint initiative of the Enniscorthy Business Association (EBA) and Enniscorthy & District Chamber, will hopefully lead to a Town Team being set up and a retail plan for the town being formulated. The large attendance listened intently to the expert views of David Fitzsimons and it is hoped that many of his suggestions will be taken on board by individual retailers, the Chamber, EBA, and the future Town Team. But little progress will be made unless the town’s retailers take ownership of their own destiny and that means if contacted by the Chamber or EBA over the coming weeks and months and asked to help out in some way that they be willing, otherwise the future of retailing in Enniscorthy might be bleak. n

VET DIARY FOR APRIL with the Moyne Veterinary Clinic

Joe Kavanagh recalls a recent case where a local dog groomer helped save a dog’s life. Cases arrive in through our doors for all sorts of reasons. Sometimes it's an emergency such as a car accident, a dog fight, or the animal has fallen and hurt itself. Other times it's just on a routine check-up that things come to light. About two weeks ago a client took her pet – an 11-year-old dog, to the groomers. Very soon after starting to work on him the groomer noticed something untoward with the dog and alerted the owner. One of the dog's testicles had become enlarged and inflamed and thanks to the prompt action of both the dog groomer and owner the dog, Louis, was presented to us for an examination. Sure enough one of the testicles, which had never descended fully, had become cancerous and needed to be operated on. We scheduled Louis in for the op and gave him "the snip". I'm often slow to operate on possible malignant tumours but in this case it was the best option and Louis bounced back better than ever to the relief of the owner, ourselves and the very vigilant and excellent dog groomer. She probably helped save his life. n ––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––

A local contributor looks at life today in Enniscorthy and beyond pEnsions scandal The campaign, led by New Ross Councillor Michael Sheehan, against the scandalous change in the qualifying criteria for the contributory old age pension rolls on. The changes, brought about by Joan Burton when she was Labour Party Minister for Social Protection, mean that many people who should qualify for a full contributory pension will be deprived of up to €50 per week. However, Sheehan has been relentless in his pursuit of this injustice and has had the matter raised in the Dail and elsewhere. Unfortunately, the present Minister Leo Varadkar has refused to introduce any change to this obvious callous pension rob by the previous government. Our own local government T.D.s have been very silent on this. Of course not surprising in Howlin’s case as he was Minister for Public Expenditure at the time this cut was introduced and as such drove the cutting agenda. The only way progress on this issue will be made is through public pressure. Sheehan has already organised a petition, signed by thousands so far, and has now organised a public meeting entitled Restoring the Pension Rules and Respecting Retirees for Thursday 20th April at 7pm

in the Horse and Hound, Ballinaboola. Speakers will include Dolores Devereux, Regional President of the ICA, Justin Moran, Age Action Ireland, Willie O’Dea T.D., Mary Butler T.D. and former government minister Mary O’Rourke. Regardless of any political views you may have this campaign deserves your support. For to allow any government, of any colour, to treat our elderly in the fashion which Burton did without protest is a reflection on all of us. Remember this may affect you directly if you are at or near pension age, it may affect your parents or grandparents and if you are young you can be sure that it will affect you in the future. If these pension rights are not restored you can bet your bottom dollar that by the time you arrive at the age to collect yours after a lifetime of work you will be told, “Nothing to collect pal.” garda scandals The Gardai in this country have always been held in high esteem by the public in general. However, the revelations of the last few months have shaken this respect to the core. The disgraceful situation regarding the breathalyser issue reaches down into every garda station in the country. This

Pic: ©Joseph Doyle

View from the Hill is not just a few rogue Gardai pumping a few false statistics into a computer somewhere. It is obvious that hundreds, if not thousands of Gardai, over a period of years, deliberately concocted figures to make themselves look good. The net effect of this falsification is that we cannot currently believe anything which comes from that source in relation to crime statistics etc. Everything is suspect at this point. On top of that many thousands of innocent people have been dragged into court on the non-payment of speeding fines. These people never received fixed charge notices and therefore ended up before a

judge. In one case the judge accused such people of stinking of perjury and made little of them in court and then went on to heavily fine them and give them penalty points. To right this wrong the state must now arrange circuit court hearings for 14,500 people to have their innocence vindicated. And who will pay for this. You and I. Not one of the higher echelons of the Gardai will be held to account or asked to forfeit their pensions as a result of this debacle. They will, if penalised at all, be quietly retired off on full superannuation lump sum of thousands and full pensions which of course we will pay for

again. I haven’t even mentioned the scandal of Templemore Training College where apparently the Gardai had a slush fund of millions at their disposal at a time when the rest of us were struggling to make ends meet. This money which belonged to the state was used to buy gifts and provide entertainment for the elite. A laundry fund which they had was used to subsidise the restaurant. Where does this end is the question. What else is going on which we don’t know about yet? Currently 17 different enquiries are ongoing into the force. What will these throw up one wonders? Senator Martin Conway, at the Oireachtas Committee on Justice on Thursday 30/03/17, commented that his concern was that if all this is going on inside the Gardai how confident are we that the evidence given in court cases by the members of this force is not equally unreliable maybe resulting in wrong convictions and possible jail sentences. The Commissioner Noirin O’Sullivan had no answer to that. compo culturE Recent court awards to people who suffered relatively minor injuries through accident must raise eyebrows. Every such award indirectly affects all of us, which

we will notice on our insurance premiums. This culture must change and quite honestly our courts will have to cop themselves on. Failing that, legislation to specify maximum awards should be introduced. They’ve introduced legislation to deal with matters much less significant than this over the years. Enniscorthy Fights Back Enniscorthy Chamber and Enniscorthy traders are fighting back. Despite the slight lift from the terrible recession of the last few years many people feel that Enniscorthy is finding it difficult to pull itself back to where it should be. To counteract this the various business associations and local authorities are working together to enhance what the town and district has to offer. This endeavour deserves success and we can all assist by shopping and doing business where we can in our own area. There is little point in cribbing about what the town has or hasn’t unless we are prepared to support the existing businesses and their employees whose wages depend on what we spend. n We are often asked: Who is the “View from the Hill” columnist? All we can say is that the author’s surname is NOT Doyle!

History at its best, performing a ‘Present Arms’ in front of the viewing stand as a mark of respect to the viewing dignitaries. EHRS is continually expanding its repertoire to include all periods of Irish history. – Maria Nolan

Closure of rural post offices Fianna Fáil td James Browne says he is opposed to any proposal to close post offices which serve rural communities in Wexford. Recent reports have indicated that more than 200 post offices are earmarked for closure under an An Post restructuring plan. “The scale of the closures being reported is frightening and will further accelerate the erosion of rural communities, which has become the hallmark of this government. Minister Naughton in particular presents himself as a champion for rural Ireland. However his record in this area as abysmal when you consider he

is presiding over the demise of towns, villages and communities all over the country. The rollout of broadband has been abysmal, roads and infrastructure projects are at a standstill and now… the threat of more than 200 post office closures. “The Government needs to come up with a comprehensive plan to save our post office network. The emphasis to date has been on determining what post offices can be closed, this attitude needs to change. The focus should be on increasing footfall into post offices to prevent the need for closures in the first place. This can be achieved by offering additional services in post offices

to help entice people to do business with An Post. “Post offices are much more than a business model; they are the lifeblood of countless communities, particularly in rural areas… They are a meeting place for older people and people living in isolated areas… “Rural communities in Wexford have suffered significant hardship in recent years due to the withdrawal of key services. The closure of post offices will only add to this problem and must be resisted. Minister Naughten needs to get to grips with this and come forward with a plan to deliver new services through our post office network.” n

NEW ROSS RIOTS! Fianna Fáil councillor michael sheehan has called for a memorial to be placed for the commemoration of the new ross riots of 1887 – a seminal battle in both irish history and the march for irish freedom. In 1887 a riot broke out in the Poor House whereby women led the charge to defend people from the oppressive rules of the Board of Governors, operating under the orders of the Marquis of Ely. Cllr Sheehan believes, “We should have a

memorial place in the Houghton Hospital grounds, the site of the original Work House.” The leading scholar in this area, Virginia Crossman, is giving a lecture about the importance of this event on Tuesday April 11 at 7pm in the New Ross Library. “I'm asking the whole community to attend this event: this history is raw, this history is real. It isn't contrived or fabricated – this happened in our community and the New Ross experiment (that

allowed locals to elect the Board of Governors) showed the power of the people and gave the National League the courage to lead the charge for independence. “It is unique and I want to congratulate the Library staff and Archives for working to show the richness of our history and for inviting Prof. Crossman over… (and) I want to see a commemorative plaque or statue for those who stood up for their rights in 1887.” n

caroline gets motoring

honda civic review by Caroline Kidd

a new honda civic has just arrived in dealers. this is the tenth generation of the civic, a model that accounts for over 50% of honda’s sales in ireland, so this is an important new model for the brand. Honda speak about a ‘dynamic rejuvenation’ of the Civic, and the new car has been engineered with a renewed focus on rewarding driving dynamics. Everything is new: new platform, new interior, new styling and new engines. The new Civic looks very sporty with pronounced wheel arches, an aggressive nose, slim headlamps and large intakes set in the bumpers front and back. Inside, the interior design has been vastly improved with a simple, horizontal design and some plusher cabin material finishes. The Honda Connect infotainment system is standard on all but the base model, and is compatible with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Honda is also raising the

game in terms of safety equipment with the launch of the new Civic. The Honda Sensing suite of safety and driver-assistance technologies come as standard across the range including lane departure warning, lane keep assist, traffic sign recognition and forward collision warning. Like most new cars these days, the new Honda Civic is longer, wider and lower than the car it replaces, and the new platform has boosted interior space. Front shoulder room has been increased by 10mm, and space between the front seats has increased by 30mm. There is 95mm more legroom in the back. Honda’s ‘magic seats’ are now gone, an innovative feature that allowed you to flip up the rear seat cushions to carry tall items, but the 478 litre boot is big for this size of car. The new Honda Civic is launching with two brand new engines: 1.0-litre (127hp) and 1.5-litre (180hp) turbo petrols. A 1.6-litre diesel will join the

Honda Civic

range before the end of the year. The 1.0-litre starts at €23,750 for ‘Smart’ trim but comes well equipped with the Honda Sensing suite of safety tech, Bluetooth, parking sensors, climate control and 16” alloys. For €26,250, buyers can upgrade with a Smart Plus Pack that adds the Honda Connect infotainment system with navigation, rear parking camera, dual zone climate control, 17” alloys and front fog lights. The entry price for the 1.5litre turbo petrol is €28,550 in

‘S Design’ trim. This car looks sportier with a centrally mounted double exhaust, 17” alloys and extra sills on the front, rear and sides. LED headlights are also included as standard along with Honda Connect, rear parking camera, and dual zone climate control. The GT Pack (€30,750) adds adaptive dampers, a glass roof, keyless entry and start, heated front seats and a blind spot monitor with cross traffic monitor. There is also the option of a Prestige Pack (€32,550) that is a more ‘luxurious’ version

Every month Bunclody native caroline kidd brings you the best from the world of motoring, including car reviews, news and more. caroline is a member of the irish motoring Writers’ association (imWa) and a jury member for irish car of the year. you can follow her blog changing lanes at www.changinglanes.ie. and does without the double exhaust. On the road, the new Honda Civic immediately impresses. It feels lighter and more driver-focused than before with a new found agility that makes it easy to compare with the best in class. The steering has been improved with a more direct feeling, and the ride is smooth and composed. The 1.0-litre three cylinder turbo petrol engine is lively with lots of torque low down in the rev range and makes good sense for the Irish market for the low entry price into the Civic range, high power for its size (127hp), low emissions (110g CO2) and good fuel economy (up to 4.8l/100km). It does get quite noisy however when revved hard. The 1.5litre engine has four cylinders so naturally is more refined. The 6-speed manual gearbox works well with the 1.0-litre. There is also a CVT automatic transmission but it’s better suited to the 1.5-litre engine.

Honda buyers tend to be loyal to the brand so any current owners that return to trade in their Civic for the new model are in for a pleasant surprise as the new car is a marked i m p ro v e m e n t a l l ro u n d . Launching with two petrol engines, with a diesel to arrive later in the year, is brave as we still buy more diesels here than petrol cars, but slowly there does seem to be a swing back towards petrol cars in the market. Honda will be looking for some conquest sales from other brands, and the new Civic can definitely now hold its own with the best of them. model tested: Honda Civic 1.0-litre Smart Plus Pack Price: €26,250 (range starts at €23,750) Engine: 1.0-litre turbo petrol Power: 127hp 0-100km/h: 10.9 seconds Economy: 59mpg CO2 emissions: 110g/km Motor tax: €190 per year n

strawberry fair it’s 50 years since the first strawberry Fair was held in Enniscorthy and during the intervening years the fortunes of the Fair have fluctuated to reflect the changing attitudes of the day. While it is true to say the festival for many years reached incredible heights in terms of national popularity, rivalling as it did The Rose of Tralee Festival in Kerry and The Mary from Dungloe Festival in Donegal, it is also true to say its popularity plummeted in recent years because of changing social norms and the huge drop-off in support for such events. All that is about to change, however, with the clearest indications emerging that the 2017 festival will see a return to the halcyon days of care-free outdoor entertainment from the

The Strawberry Fair has amalgamated with the Street Rhythms Festival in order to broaden its popularity and while both will retain their distinctive styles, collectively they will present a programme of music, song and dance which will have visitors to Enniscorthy and locals alike literally dancing in the streets over the June Bank Holiday weekend (2nd-5th June). Wexford has an estimated 7,121 people living with vision impairment and blindness and the charity is inviting all those affected to complete the survey and give their views and experience. The information provided will help Fighting Blindness to tackle important issues and fight for changes in policy and the health service. Fighting Blindness Advocacy Manager, Caitriona Dunne, explained the significance of the campaign: “Fighting Blindness is a patient-led charity and works on behalf of everyone in Ireland living with vision impairment and blindness. In order to represent people appropriately, we need to know what issues people face in their day to day lives and how best can we support them. So we are calling on people and families affected by vision loss to give their views.” Fighting Blindness will also use the information collected to create a national network of Vision Impaired People (VIP’s). The VIP Network will serve as a platform to build awareness about vision loss throughout Ireland and create greater understanding of what it is like to live with a vision impairment. Wexford FC finding the going tough Enniscorthy ladies golf news… Wexford FC, the successor to Wexford Youths, is finding life in the League of Ireland First Divison just as tough as life last season in the Premier Division. After six matches Wexford FC is propping up the table on two points. But with three home fixtures in April the club could kick-start their season starting with a home game this Friday 7th at 8pm against

Longford Town who are immediatley above them in the league table on four points. The club could do with all the support it can muster so make a note of the following dates and consider giving the club a visit on these matchdays: Fri 7th 8pm home game versus Longford Town. Fri 14th 8pm home versus Cobh Ramblers. Fri 21st 7.45pm away to Athlone Town. Fri 28th 8pm home game versus Cabinteely. n

Wexford writers to the fore On Saturday 11th March I spent the day with Wexford author and Chair of the Wexford Literary Festival Carmel Harrington at the Irish Writers Centre, Parnell Square, Dublin at a Readathon to celebrate International Women’s Day. Female writers and poets from all around Ireland and Northern Ireland were invited to the Centre to participate in a Readathon, a full day event in celebration of women’s writing in Ireland. Each participant was given three minutes to read from their own work

and the chance to network and connect with fellow female writers and poets. Former politician and Chairperson of the Irish Writers’ Centre, Liz MacManus, welcomed the large crowd and thanked all those contributing to what she described as ‘a hugely creative, innovative and enjoyable event’ and she encouraged all to embrace the opportunity to share their work, experiences and ideas. Wexford was well represented at the event by Carmel Harrington, now a best-selling author with her fifth book

72 Derry Lane due for release on 1st June, and Cat Hogan who released her first novel last year They All Fall Down and her second book set in Marrakesh in due out this September. Members of the Wexford Literary Festival were also present with Adele O’Neill celebrating the fact that she has just been offered a three-book deal by popular publishing house Head of Zeus. Wexford Literary Festival is now in preparation for its fourth year beginning on Friday 19th May and continuing

through to Sunday 21st utilising all our beautiful venues in Enniscorthy – The Presentation Centre, The Church Institue, Enniscorthy Castle and the Athenaeum and boasting a pot of approximately €3,000 to be divided between One Act Drama Award, Poetry Award, Children’s Book Trailer Award and Colm Toibin Short Story Award. So go to our website for details and get your submission in by April 8th, who knows this time next year you could be the one with a book deal. – Maria Nolan

Exhibition with a difference On Saturday 4th March I was delighted to be asked to open Switch – a photographic exhibition with a difference at Bunclody Library. Switch is an exhibiton of experimental photography by four amazingly creative photographers – Dick Donaghue from Galway, Marja van Kampen from the Netherlands, Hannah B from Cork and Zuzana Sukopova from Slovakia, all now living in Enniscorthy and Bunclody. The exhibition ran until the end of March. The four have taken photographs of ordinary items or groups of items and passed them through various filters and techniques to produce something completely new and different and even abstract. Each of the twenty manipulated pieces on display were unique and astounding in their intensity and composition, their beauty, energy and vibrancy transformed them from mere photographs to works of art.

Bunclody & Beyond Bunclody-based photographer Jarlath Judge will unveil his latest collection of work at Bunclody Library this April. The “Bunclody and Beyond” exhibition features local landscape and heritage images and some digital art, and will be launched at Bunclody Library on Thursday April 6th at 5.45 pm. Jarlath is a prominent mem-

ber of Enniscorthy Camera Club and holds several accolades for his photography, including a Licentiate from the Irish Photographic Federation and an Artist Distinction from the International Federation of Photographic Art The exhibition is on show at Bunclody Library during normal opening hours for the month of April. n

Theatre and the Film Resource Centre. Dick has inspired the group to think outside the box, to see everything from a different perspective, he has encouraged them not just to see things differently but also to think differently about photography and taking photographs. This is an experimental journey that

morphs the ordinary into the extraordinary and appeals to amateur and professional photographers alike. This art form is new and exciting, absorbing and fascinating and above all visually appealing, each of the pieces would adorn any wall and are very reasonably priced. – Maria Nolan

Opera Festival details announced for 2017 The 66th Wexford Festival Opera will run over 18 days from 19th October to 5th November, 2017. The Festival opens with Medea by Luigi Cherubini directed by Fiona Shaw, who is known for both her awardwinning theatre and film acting work. The other two main evening operas include the highly anticipated Margherita by Jacopo Foroni, which hasn’t been seen or heard since it premiered in Milan in 1848 and Risurrezione by Franco Alfano, based on the Tolstoy novel Resurrection. The Festival is also delighted to present a co-production with Opera Theatre Company, the world-premiere of two one-act operas entitled Dubliners. Based on Counterparts and The Boarding House from Joyce’s Dubliners, the operas are composed by Andrew Synnott with adaptation and text by Arthur Riordan.

One of the main evening operas will be ‘Margherita’ by Jacopo Foroni.

In addition to Dubliners the ShortWorks productions include La Scala di seta by Gioachino Rossini and Rigoletto by Giuseppe Verdi. Intimately staged and approximately one hour in length, the ShortWorks are presented in the nearby Clayton Whites Hotel and offer audiences the opportunity to enjoy a one-act opera or a condensed version of a more familiar opera performed

by cast members and chorus of the evening operas. Una Hunt, one of Ireland’s leading authorities on Irish composers whose music has been largely forgotten or neglected, will present The Thomas Moore Songbook – a programme of Moore’s Irish Melodies in the atmospheric setting of St. Iberius Church. One of Ireland's most successful pianists, Dubliner Finghin Collins, will perform

a piano recital in the O’Reilly Theatre in the National Opera House on Bank Holiday Monday. The 2017 Dr Tom Walsh Lecture will be given by Cork native, Fiona Shaw, renowned actress and theatre and opera director, marking her Wexford Festival Opera directorial debut. In addition to her critically-acclaimed opera directing, Fiona is also widely known for her extensive and celebrated acting performances with the Royal Shakespeare Company and the National Theatre, winning the Olivier Award for Best Actress for Electra in 1990 and Machinal in 1994. She won the 1997 Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Solo Performance for The Waste Land. Her other stage work includes playing the title role in Medea at the Abbey Theatre, in London's West End and on Broadway (2001–02) resulting in a Tony Award

nomination. She was awarded an Honorary CBE in 2001. Canadian broadcaster and associate professor of musicology at the University of Montreal, Sylvia L’Écuyer, will present a talk entitled Operas of the Past, Mirrors of our Present, exploring the trends in updating operas into contemporary circumstances. Other events include the long-standing Festival tradition of the Gala Concert featuring a collection of favourite party pieces from members of the Festival Company which delights audiences every year, and the Lunchtime Recitals which will run throughout the Festival in the intimate and informal setting of St. Iberius Church. The Living Arts Project exhibition represents a selection of work produced by the participating schools and artists, offering pupils and their families a chance to see their work presented in a professional gallery. The exhibition will run in Wexford Arts Centre from 1st April to 6th May 2017, and gallery hours are Monday to Friday 10am-5pm, and Saturday from 10am-4pm.
