The idea of a University and a Business Park, side by side, on the outskirts of Enniscorthy, is indeed a pleasant one but how realistic is it? The Business Park (which won’t have any retail units) looks certain to go ahead on a 16ha/40 acre site adjoining the St Senan’s Hospital complex. At the Enniscorthy Municipal District Meeting on 24th April the Slaney News listened to two officials from Wexford County Council outline plans for the development. The first step involves a Variation to the Enniscorthy Town and Environs Development Plan 2008-2014. According to the Council’s own document, “The proposed variation is to change the land use zoning of the land to allow for a business park which will facilitate office, light industry, manufacturing and incubator type units. Background work is ongoing. Environmental Consultants have also been engaged to carry out a Strategic Environmental Assessment and Appropriate Assessment of the proposed Variation.” A public consultation period will take place soon and
if all goes according to plan the business park should be up and running by the end of 2019 with the potential to create several hundred jobs. Regarding a third-level institution at the St Senan’s Hospital complex, a local group comprising Cllr Paddy Kavanagh, Tommy Kelly (former Principal of Enniscorthy Vocational College) and local man, John Doyle, have begun planning for such a development and have held a number of exploratory talks with interested parties in the education sphere. Carlow IT has a presence in Wexford Town already and in the process of purchasing additional lands there so it may be difficult to get them to commit to Enniscorthy. It’s early days yet but if a third level campus could be brought to fruition it would obviously have huge benefits for Enniscorthy and the whole South East region. Mr Kelly will be briefing Wexford County Council at its upcoming monthly meeting so keep an eye on our Facebook page for updates. n

As Chiropractors, we aim to improve function of the spine therefore reducing pain and more importantly promoting general health. Our goal is also to educate patients on relevant issues such as posture, work ergonomics, exercise and nutrition. The importance of maintaining healthy spine function cannot be underestimated with regard to one’s general well being. Working in poor posture will put unnecessary stress on the neck, middle back or low back which has a very negative impact on general performance. Exercises may relieve that stress, but more often than not, people are too stiff in their spines to exercise properly. We have become a sedentary society; we sit too much! Keeping moving is the key: why not give the car a break and walk or cycle more. Simply standing up for a couple of minutes during the movie ad breaks is enough to decompress the spine and ward off health risks associated with sitting down. On the other end of the spectrum it may be necessary for a chiropractor to investigate complete body biomechanics and sports technique to help those who find their sports injury does not improve after a few weeks rest or has become recurrent. For instance, a knee problem may arise due to a hip or pelvic problem, shoulder or arm problems may come from the neck or upper back. Once patients are symptom free they are encouraged to come for a checkup now and again in order to maintain optimal spinal function. We go to the dentist for a checkup without having pain, we even get our cars serviced when nothing appears to be wrong so why not afford our spines the same privilege? – Marc-jan Fransens Enniscorthy Enterprise & Technology Centre

What is a zero day? FERNS COMPUTER SERVICES You have probably heard the term zero-day or zero-hour malware, but what exactly does it mean? It’s simple: it just means the malware is using a software vulnerability for which there is currently no available defence or fix. The vulnerability allows the malware to perform actions on your system that should not be permitted, such as running arbitrary code. Such malicious actions can impact the confidentiality, integrity, or availability of your system. If a vulnerability is known already (i.e. not a zero-day), then chances are the software vendor has patched it, and/or security software vendors have added defences against it. So, you can protect yourself against known vulnerabilities simply by keeping your software, including your anti-malware defence, up to date. But these precautions will not protect you against zero-days. You can think of the search for new vulnerabilities as a race. When security researchers and good guys find them, they warn the software vendor so the vulnerability can be patched. The best practice (what’s called “responsible disclosure“) is to initially do this privately, so the bad guys won’t get a head’s up. Once some time has passed, allowing the vulnerability to be patched, the finding is made public. Unfortunately, the bad guys are also in this race. They look for vulnerabilities in order to accomplish their ends, which generally involve ripping you off in some way. They try to find undisclosed vulnerabilities and create malware that takes advantage of them. So, are we defenceless against zero-day attacks? Happily, the answer is no. Anti-Exploit software like Malwarebytes Anti-Exploit can monitor your system for the sorts of actions associated with zero-day exploits and shut them down before they harm your system. Ferns Computer Services has been in business in Ferns since May 2007. Established by David Pohludek, it has a huge clientele base all over Co. Wexford and beyond.

The future of education Census 2016 data published by the Central statistics office on 6th april indicates that there are about 1,100 additional children in Co. wexford primary schools compared to five years ago, according to gorey Cllr. malcolm Byrne. almost all of these can be expected to attend second level in wexford, so pressure will be on to find places for these students as they leave their primary education. The census figures show that the number of primary school age children (aged between 5 and 14) in the County
grew from 21,525 in the 2011 Census to 22,625 in last year's Census. Malcolm said these figures emphasise “the importance of investing in facilities for education, for training and for youth services". He added, "One of our problems is that we often don't plan adequately. Here are the figures that show the challenge we have over the next few years. We need to properly prepare. The growth in second level numbers will obviously also then have implications for the demand for third level places and for apprenticeships.
at the Chrism mass in st aidan’s Cathedral in april, Bishop denis Brennan spoke about one of the biggest challenges facing the irish church at the moment – the shortage of candidates coming forward to priesthood and religious life and how that impacts by undermining and sapping the morale of the Church. Bishop Brennan said, “It’s a cliché now to talk about how Ireland has changed in recent years. In the 2016 Census 10% indicated they had no religion. It should not surprise us that this cultural change should impact on the life of the church. “The scandals have had an impact too, they have poisoned the well, but this cultural shift had begun before the scandals broke. They didn’t cause it but they certainly didn’t help… “In the Year of Consecrated Life the Holy Father asked us to embrace the future with hope. This hope is more than the vague feeling that all our endeavours will have a happy ending, it is the conviction that whatever happens the Kingdom of God will continue to be proclaimed and revealed.” Bishop Brennan spoke about the Bishop’s Conference setting up a new National Vocations Office in Maynooth which will work in cooperation with Vocations Ireland, the office which promotes vocations to the Religious Life. n
We need to use the Census data in all our planning." Malcolm did point out, however, that long term, the birth rate in the County was declining. While in 2011, there were 11,539 children aged four and under in Co. Wexford; that number was down to 10,327 in 2016. Other interesting statistics revealed by the CSO from the Census showed that there were 90 same-sex civil partnerships in the County; that there was an average of 2.7 people living in every household in Co. Wexford; that 13,010 people

speak a language other than English or Irish at home in Co. Wexford; and that there are 1,508 travellers in the County (just over 1% of the population). n a recent event was held in st Peter ’s College, wexford, arranged by the diocese, to show appreciation to all involved with CmT (Christian media Trust) in making the many and varied radio programmes which air on south East radio each week. Bishop Denis Brennan was in attendance and he thanked everyone most sincerely for the dedication and the time that they give to making the programmes. Maria Colfer, Chairperson of CMT, read out some excellent feedback received on programmes that had aired and said, "Our aim is to bring the Good News and hope to the listeners." Patricia McNally spoke about the wonderful feedback that was received recently from the Polish National Tourist Board on a recent CMT programme that they heard, which featured pilgrims from St. Aidan's parish speaking about their experiences on parish pilgrimage in Krackow. CMT has indeed gone from strength to strength in its 29 years of existence and looks forward to continuing to make programmes that are uplifting and hope-filled. 24/7 cardiac care needed
The health Equality for the south East group is calling on the people of wexford to support the call for 24/ 7 cardiac care for the region. at present the south East is the only region in the country that doesn’t have a 24-hour service. The Cardiac Cath Lab at Univeristy Hospital Waterford (UHW) serves the southeast region but only operates from Monday to Friday between 9am and 5pm. All other regions have 24/7 care and have access to more than one Cath Lab; a permanent second Cath Lab for UHW is needed, according to the group, for the health and safety of the people of the southeast. The Cardiac Cath Lab at University Hospital Waterford (UHW) serves over 500,000 people across the southeast.
Patients within this region who suffer heart attacks after 5pm cannot access a Cath Lab in UHW or anywhere else within the 90 minute recommended time. This could result in catastrophic health outcomes and possibly death, due to failure to receive the appropriate interventional care in the recommended time. The group says UHW Cardiac Cath Lab is the single most efficient public Cath Lab in Ireland doing complex cardiac interventional procedures. Yet it is only resourced and funded to operate 37 hours per week. Last year the Cath Lab at University Hospital Waterford dealt with over 3,500 heart procedures despite the restricted operating hours.

A ‘novel’ idea! A prize for the Best Literary Window Display will be awarded to the winner by Bibi Baskin, of RTE fame, at the Athenaeum on Sunday 21st May. So get those creative juices flowing and add a bit of colour and imagination to the town for the Festival weeekend. See www.wexfordliteraryfestival.com n
The people of the Southeast have been fighting since 2012 for a permanent second Cath Lab for UHW since the Higgin’s report was published and the people of the region were at that time promised the delivery of a second Cath Lab by the Department of Health. Since that point Dr Niall Herity, a consultant based in Belfast, was tasked with conducting a review by Minister for Health Simon Harris. The Herity report, which was commissioned to evaluate the cardiac service provision in the South East, has been widlely criticised in its methodology and findings, but has been unquestioningly adopted as government policy. The campaigners behind the ‘Hand on Heart’ initiative, rolled out by Health Equality for the South East, include Keith Barry, Davy Fitzgerald, Brian Cody, Austin Gleeson, Michael Ryan, Davy Russell, TJ Reid, Henry De Bromhead, etc. They are calling on the people of the region to join them in lobbying their local politicians, talking about and demonstrating the need for 24/7 cardiac care for the southeast. You can join the social media campaign at www.facebook.com/healthequityfse and bring as much attention as possible to the need for Health Equality for the people of the South East. In April Enniscorthy VTOS (Vocational Training Opportunities Scheme) students held their own photography exhibition in their new premises, which is shared with several other Adult Education bodies, at the Enniscorthy Further Education and Training Centre at Gonzaga House, Upper Wafer Street, beside The Wilds restaurant and opposite the old Social Welfare Office.
David’s informative lecture well known Enniscorthy man david hasslacher gave a most informative and interesting lecture on 20th april in Enniscorthy library on his family’s history and the tradition of malting barley in the wexford area. David, a member of the well known Roche family, final occupants of Enniscorthy Castle and owners of the Roche Malting Plant at Island Road, Enniscorthy, told the large audience that his people came from Flanders in Belgium across to Wales and from there to Wexford during the Norman Invasion of 1169. Enniscorthy was little more than a hamlet at that time and through the generations the Roche family did much to develop and transform it. In 1579, during the reign of Elizabeth 1, Henry Wallop was granted lands in Ireland and saw huge potential in the mass i v e o a k f o re s t i n t h e Enniscorthy area – Dubh Tire. The Castle was in ruin at this time being constantly pillaged and plundered by the maraudering Kavanagh Clan but as Wallop felled the forest depriving them of their cover the raids became less frequent allowing the town to prosper and develop. The timber from the forest was used by the Royal Navy, the Castle was rebuilt, there was an increase in trade

and the town began to grow and flourish. By the mid 1700s much of the forest had been cleared exposing some of the best malting barley land in Ireland and with the establishment of Arthur Guinness in1759 the time was right for a new industry for Enniscorthy with the Roche family seeing the potential immediately and the rest as they say is history. David went on to talk about his great-great grandfather Henry Roche 1778-1854, a shrewd businessman who began the malting dynasty, his great grandfather Patrick Joseph Roche 1818-1915, who purchased Enniscorthy Castle from Lord Portsmouth and his grandfather Henry Joseph Roche 18621947 who on a visit to cousins, the Foleys, who lived on a farm in Baltimore, Maryland, called
Enniscorthy, met and subsequently married Josephine Shriver and returned to live at the Castle in Enniscorthy that his father had given them as a wedding present. David is understandably very proud of his family’s history and the rich tradition they brought to the Enniscorthy area, providing major employment for many years in the town and talks passionately about the malting business, which he said was not just part of his family’s history but part of the history of many Enniscorthy families and he would love to see some kind of permanent exhibition in the town about it incorporating the Power and Jameson traditions as well. Now wouldn’t that create a wonderful Enniscorthy experience for visitors to our town. – Maria Nolan

Friends in Need music feast at The Bailey Enniscorthy man, Ciaran Doyle, is organising a night of top class music by locals in support of what he believes to be a vital service in our beautiful little town – Touched By Suicide. Ciaran says, “This charity does amazing and often thankless work for the people of our town and I think it is time to step up and lend a well deserved hand. It's ten years since Mrs. Kathleen Quinn began her work as the founder of Touched by Suicide Enniscorthy and the work this lady has done has been phenomenal! So, in respect of that and the difference she and others dedicated to this cause have made, I would strongly
urge you to support this night and this ongoing cause.” Ciaran continues, “Touched By Suicide offers a free, 100% confidential counselling service held within Enniscorthy. Unlike the bigger charities, there are no waiting times or referrals... help is there when help is needed!!!” The Bailey has very kindly allowed the fundraising event to take over the entire building separating live music (downstairs) and dance music (upstairs). Little Shop of Horrors – scarily good Enniscorthy Musical Society’s presentation of Little Shop of Horrors ran from 18th to 22nd april in Colaiste Bride, Enniscorthy, and deservedly received standing ovations every night. This lively, tonguein-cheek show with plenty of catchy 50’s-style music and featuring a man-eating plant and an evil dentist proved to be a major hit and will be a difficult show to follow up next year! The talented production team included Paul Walsh, Kevin Kennedy, and Anne Marie Cooney. And the equally talented cast included: James Dobbs, Niamh Bolger, Benny Redmond, Neal O’Leary, Lorcan Dunne, Ashley Doran, Therese Canavan Bolger, and Michaela White all of whom put in superb performances. It is difficult to single out any one cast member in particular but we have to mention James Dobbs as to a large extent his character dominates the show and James pulled it off with great aplomb. n
Local shows reach national standard
In the last month or so Enniscorthy showed once again that when it comes to music and drama we can match the very best in the rest of the country. We take a look back on Enniscorthy Drama Group’s production of The Cripple of Inishmaan and Enniscorthy Musical Society’s Little Shop of Horrors. ThE CripplE STEalS ThE Show: if you missed Enniscorthy Drama Group’s latest production – the Martin McDonagh tragicomedy The Cripple of Inishmaan at the athenaeum, then you missed one of EDG’s best performances to date with sterling acting from each of the main characters brilliantly bolstered by those in supporting roles. in fact each and every role was excellently cast and expertly executed and a tremendous credit to the Director, John o’Gorman, who incidently is simply magnificent as local gossip monger, Johnnypateenmike, who relieves the boredom of life on inishmaan by spreading gossip and lies to the islanders who seem to revel in the misery of their neighbours. The play, which is a rather dark depiction of Ireland, its people and their attraction to America and its promised riches, is an absurd comedy about Irishness and the bitter sweetness of Irish life. Martin McDonagh has managed to tap into the way humans can be so cruel to each other and none better than the raucous Helen McCormick or rather Slippy
Helen, who likes nothing better than to peg eggs at clergymen who feel her arse. Gemma Delaney made this part her own from the moment she stepped on stage as you looked forward to seeing and hearing more of her cruel but hysterical remarks. Local boatman, Babbybobby, somewhat restores your faith in human nature when he displays a degree of kindness to Cripple Billy but then takes you by surprise with his violence towards Johnnypateenmike. Fintan Kelly is well cast in the role of boatman and has both the physique for the part and the talent to show two very different aspects of Irish character. Julie Fox and Joanne McCabe as aunts or ‘pretend aunts’ Kate and Eileen are a most suitable pair and compliment each other perfectly, both looking the part and with having just the right feel for it. We both empathise and sympathise with their love of Cripple Billy. AnneMarie Whelan gives another fantastic performance as the drunken mammy of Johnnypateenmike and the scene with herself, Joe Doyle as the Doctor and Johnnypateenmike is one of the funniest in the play.
Alan Kinsella who plays the unfortunate brother of Slippy Helen is a most likeable and harmless character and takes all the abuse Helen hurls at him both verbally and physically in the best of humour – even the egg incident – which was particularly amusing as Helen says, ‘Let’s play Ireland and England – you can be Ireland and I’ll be England’, she says, as she proceeds to pelt eggs at him. McDonagh understands that there is no tragedy without humour and takes it to absurdity in some parts of this play. The play is full of colour, life and longing and there is wonderful depth to each of the characters as they expose multiple layers of Irishness and the myth that surrounds that Irishness but James Freeman steals the show with his warm, sensitive performance as the bookish Cripple who dreams of escaping the boredom of life on Inishmaan in 1934. This is a young man who is already very comfortable centre stage and in a soft, subtle way manages to completely master the role and is undoubtedly the star of the play. – Maria Nolan

Darol Anger & Republic of Strings With his unique genre-bending blend of bluegrass, jazz, folk and classical styles, Grammy nominated fiddler Darol Anger is a master of the unexpected. Darting from Swedish polkas to Brazilian choro before segueing seamlessly into a soul classic, all delivered with the rollicking abandon of a hootenanny. Anger developed his signature sound working alongside great improvisers such as Stéphane Grappelli, Martin Hayes, Jerry Douglas and Béla Fleck, and over the past 40 years has produced an array of critically-acclaimed albums, including 17 with the legendary Turtle Island String Quartet alone. For this journey into uncharted musical waters, he is aided and abetted by a trio of nimble-fingered pioneers. Long-time collaborator and 5-time Grand National Fiddle Champion Tristan Clarridge is co-founder of the chamber-grass group The Bee Eaters. Acclaimed multi-instrumentalist John Mailander has performed with such renowned artists as the Alison Brown Quartet, Victor Wooten and Steve Martin, while the riveting vocal sound of Emy Phelps has graced the albums of a long line of folk stalwarts including Patrick Brayer, Chris Darrow, Norma Tanega and Brian Ransom's Ceramic Ensemble.

in the summer of 2016, over 50 people signed up for the “Blind Collaborations” music project for charity, facilitated by Brendan Carthy of orchard recording in Enniscorthy. Their names were pulled out of a hat and put into groups, and each group given a half day slot to come in and record a song from scratch! Every person had the opportunity of nominating their own charity of choice, and the proceeds of this album will be split equally between all of those charities. The resulting CD was launched at a well-attended and enthusiastic event on 30th of March upstairs at The Sky In The Ground in Wexford town.

ANDY IRVINE Saturday 6th May
2017, 8.30pm.
One of the great Irish singers, and his voice is one of a handful of truly great ones that gets to the very soul of Ireland. He has been hailed as “a tradition in himself”. Musician, singer, songwriter, Andy has maintained his highly individual performing skills throughout his 45 year career. From Sweeney’s Men in the mid 60s, to the enormous success of Planxty in the 70s and then from Patrick Street to Andy Irvine & Dónal Lunny’s Mozaik, Andy has been a world music pioneer and an icon for traditional music and musicians. As a soloist, Andy fills the role of the archetypal troubadour with a show and a travelling lifestyle that reflect his lifelong influence, Woody Guthrie.
on 12th april last, Dubhtire – a voluntary media group under directors and writers Dick Donaghue and Elaine Jordan presented four short, low budget films to an intimate audience at Enniscorthy Castle. Popcorn was replaced by chocolates as we sat back in the opulent surroundings of the Castle Drawing Room to view A Picture Story – filmed in Bunclody, featuring Chloe Kavanagh, Elaine Jordan and Jon King about a young, homeless girl with a picture that tells a story. Cathy The Magician, a tale of fantasy for the younger audience, featuring Elaine and Lauren Jordan was also directed by Elaine. The third piece of film was an excellent documentary directed by Marja van Kampen about Dan Carney, a Found Objects Artist. Dan is a native of Buzzard’s Bay, Boston, who now divides his time between there and Clonegal, his wife’s parish. Brought up in Buzzard’s Bay, Dan spent most of his summers on the beach and
began collecting at a very young age – shells, stones, driftwood, etc., putting them together to create unusual pieces of art. He continues that practice now when he comes to Clonegal and some of his pieces can be seen and indeed bought at Artbank, Bunclody. The final piece of film was written by Dick Donaghue and directed by Elaine Jordan. Family Matters starring Niall Kennedy, Sinead O’Gorman, Chloe Kavanagh, Lauren Jordan, Jon King, Ciara Banville and Keelyn Conway was filmed in Enniscorthy and deals with family issues in particular teenage daughters. A most interesting and enjoyable evening with a Q & A session at the end, which was certainly enlightening when Dick informed us that it cost little or nothing to produce the four films. It would appear that there may be a need in the town for Dick to host a Movie Making Workshop – so watch this space for further details. – Maria Nolan

‘9 to 5’ – lots of delightful numbers! wexford light opera Society (wloS) took to the stage of the National opera house, wexford, from 24th to 29th april with their production of the high octane show “9 to 5 The Musical” containing lots of humour and delightful musical numbers.
This hilarious, high-energy romp, with music and lyrics by Dolly Parton, is based on the 1980 hit movie. Set in the late 1970s, it is a story of friendship and revenge being outrageous, thought-provoking and a little romantic, and was lapped up by the Wexford audiences with
full houses every night and standing ovations. The expert production team included Vivian Coates, Fintan Cleary, Nicole McDonald and Eithne Corrigan and the top class cast included Aileen Donohoe, Sharon Clancy, Maggs Jacob, George Lawlor.,
Elizabeth Rose Brown, Eric Hayes, Stephen Byrne, Cillian Tobin, Jane Kent, Sarah O’Leary, Antonia Close, Stephen Schokman, Marian O’Leary, Pat Lawlor, Sarah O’Leary, Majella Londra, Fintan O’Leary, Brian Kelly and Michael Benson. n
To quote the Irish Times, “Often copied, never equaled”, his repertoire consists of Irish traditional songs, dexterous Balkan dances and a compelling cannon of his own self-penned songs. –––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––

GLITZ AND GLAMOUR AT STRAWBERRY FAIR as part of the build-up to this year’s 50th anniversary Strawberry Fair, the organising committee is hosting a ‘Glitz and Glam Masterclass’ on Thursday night, May 25th, in the riverside park hotel. Two of ireland’s best-known bloggers, Grace Mongey (FacesByGrace) and Dominique Nugent (love, Fashion and Fros) are hosting the event which will include a fashion show in conjunction with runaway Bride and Millinery Madness, and will conclude with a question and answer session with the two ladies. Tickets are €30 each and are available online on the Strawberry Festival facebook page (events section). A preliminary programme for the festival which takes place over the June Bank Holiday weekend is now in place and the indications are that Enniscorthy will rock to the sound of music, song and dance throughout the town’s first major summer festival of the year. Media interest in the festival is considerable and TV3 will broadcast live from Enniscorthy on Saturday, June 3rd, as part of their planned schedule of programmes on

Summer Festivals throughout Ireland. Online updates for the Strawberry Fair can be found on the Strawberry Festival facebook page which is being updated regularly as new items are being added to the programme. Hotels and restaurants in Enniscorthy are being invited to participate in an exciting new competition this year entitled ‘A taste of Enniscorthy’ which is being organised to find the most mouth-watering dessert of the summer. The competition will be judged by Sven Herreman, Pastry
Chef at Monart Destination Spa, and Rebecca O’Connor, the reigning Strawberry Queen. Entry to the competition is €20 and already considerable interest is being expressed by interested parties from the town’s culinary fraternity. Tasting will take place on May 26th, and the winner will be announced over the Strawberry Fair weekend. Plans for the 50th anniversary Golden Strawberry Ball are well advanced and tickets for the event are now on sale. The ball takes place in the Riverside Park Hotel on
Wednesday night, May 31st, with music being provided by ‘Wrecking Ball’. Attendees will enjoy a champagne and strawberries reception prior to dinner after which the 2017 Princesses will be introduced to the audience. A number of former Strawberry Queens who are returning to Enniscorthy for the 50th anniversary celebrations will also be present for the occasion. The Street Rhythms committee have put together a superb programme of entertainment which will figure prominently during the Fair
weekend. Their programme consists mainly of children’s events and dance routines with local dance troupes performing on the main stage in the Market Square from 3.30pm until 6pm on Saturday, June 3rd. They have also organised for a number of craft stalls to be located along Rafter Street featuring metalwork, woodwork, pottery making, etc which will certainly attract large numbers of visitors during the day. A particular highlight of their Sunday, June 4th, programme will be the appear-
ance of Willy Wonka and his fairytale friends. Children are invited to join him in Enniscorthy Castle and on the streets of Enniscorthy and to participate in the activities which will take place throughout the afternoon and to enjoy the fun which includes a bucking bronco, inflatable games, sumo suits and much more. More activities are planned for the Abbey Square where the All Ireland Farmers Market will take pride of place on Sunday, June 4th. This event always attracts its own following and if the attendance figures of recent years are to be repeated then a very large crowd can be expected. Visitors to the Abbey Square will also be able to enjoy the Fair ’s classic car show and vintage amusements which includes a ferris wheel and other attractions. While the programme of entertainment is not yet complete, all indications point to a spectacular 50th anniversary Strawberry Fair in Enniscorthy over the June Bank Holiday weekend. If favoured by summer weather, the event should certainly see record crowds flocking to the town over the three days which can only be good for the local economy. n

Davidstown Primary School to benefit from food fund The Get Ireland Growing Fund run by GIY (Grow It Yourself) in partnership with Energia have announced the winners of the grants ranging from €500 to €2,000 from a fund of €70,000 for 2017 for successful food growing projects planned by community groups, schools and not-for-profit organisations all across the country. In Co. Wexford a funding award went to Davidstown Primary School. The team there says, “At the moment our school has noth-
ing in the way of a garden at all. We are taking baby steps at the moment and this started with the planting of some bulbs. We really want to move towards growing our own vegetables and fruits in a big way. We visited our local fruit farm a few weeks ago (Greenhills) and the children were very excited by this. We would love to see us, as a Wexford school, grow our own berries as well as a range of other fruit and veg.” In addition to the funding provided, GIY will also pro-
vide additional supports and opportunities for knowledge exchange between the projects, helping the best ideas to be shared through ‘Energia Get Ireland Growing’. This is the fourth year of the fund, which has already supported more than 400 community food-growing projects to date, positively impacting over 100,000 people. €270,000 has been awarded over the last four years and this was distributed to projects all across the country. n

Sweet start for M&M Meats Since opening on 6th April, business has been brisk at the new M&M Meats butcher shop on Enniscorthy’s Rafter Street. M&M Meats is a joint venture between Enniscorthy native Mick Crofts and his business partner Mark Hunt who between them have 70 years of experience in the trade and who worked together for 26 years at Martin Doyle’s butcher shop on Court Street before its closure in June of last year. In recent years both have had to travel substantial distances to stay working in their chosen trade. The duo believe the time is right now for them to set up their own butcher shop in
Enniscorthy and anybody who’s visited the shop in recent weeks will have seen the enthusiasm and dedication that the dynamic duo bring to their new business. And nobody could fail but be impressed with the beautiful shopfront, interior design and creative use and mix of tiles, wood, steel and other materials. The design was done by the pair themselves drawing on their substantial experience in the trade, and all the work on the premises was done by family members and local tradesmen all with a keen eye for detail. The pair are determined to support local and national producers and all their meats – beef,
lamb, pork etc is Irish produced and they also stock Regan’s Enniscorthy Organic Chicken. Mick and Mark are also keen to provide local employment and at present, in addition to the two owners, there are three other staff employed. Make sure to try out one of their huge range of different flavoured sausages – ideal for the BBQ this summer. They also stock a large range of healthy, low-fat meat Protein Packs, eggs, etc and a range of delicious sauces. M&M Meats, 12 Rafter Street, Enniscorthy. T: (053) 923 6595.

Enniscorthy’s Joseph Roche – a young Chef going places!
Chef Joseph is a winner! Joseph Roche, a DIT Culinary Arts student from Enniscorthy, won this year’s Manor Farm 21 minute challenge. He competed against four other finalists from the prestigious school of culinary arts on Cathal Brugha Street in Dublin last month. Vincent Carton, managing director of Irish chicken producer Manor Farm said: “The standard among the students was exceptionally high this y e a r. I w a s p a r t i c u l a r l y impressed by the creativity of the dishes.” He added that “this important competition
proves how limited time shouldn’t limit taste and nutrition.” Judges included Vincent Carton, Dr Frank Cullen, Head of the DIT School of Culinary Arts and Caitríona Redmond, food writer and blogger of Wholesome Ireland. The five finalists from counties Laois, Dublin, Wexford and Meath and one from Sweden, received high praise for their performances. Each was tasked to cook a tasty, lowcost and nutritious meal in 21 minutes or less. The timing is based on research that shows 21 minutes is the average time
a working parent has to cook a mid-week evening meal. Dishes were judged on the basis of taste, nutrition, timing and cost. Joseph Roche’s Mexican inspired Pan Fried Ras el Hanout Chicken Leg Oyster with Mexican style mixed vegetables was the winner. Joseph said: “ I had to keep sight of creating a dish that was nutritional, easy to prepare and also one that would be liked by the whole family, especially young children.” All the recipes are available on manorfarm.ie n

Leo and Mick singing off the same hymn-sheet! Deputy Mick Wallace has welcomed the fact that a government minister has acknowledged that Wexford is “a county of high unemployment… with longstanding problems and has not done as well is it should have done for decades now.” Responding to Deputy Wallace’s question about 18% of the workforce in Wexford being on the live register, Minister for Social Protection Leo Varadkar accepted that trends in the live register can give an indication of underlying trends in unemployment. Wallace stated that the government had no problem crowing about a national unemployment rate of 6.4% but were sheepish about acknowledging the live register figure in Wexford, which didn’t even take into account the number of people on job activation schemes such as Community Employment, TUS, JobPath etc. Minister Varadkar responded by saying, “I appreciate that there are long-standing problems in Wexford. As Deputy Walllace knows, I lived there for a few months while I was a hospital doctor. I got to know the county and liked it a lot… It has not done as well is it should have for decades now and has a lot of the problems that the Deputy mentioned.” Speaking after the debate in the Dáil, Deputy Wallace said: “In fairness to Minister Varadkar,
at least he has acknowledged Wexford faces major problems. That’s more than any other minister in this government or the last has acknowledged. It’s a cliche, but the first step to recovery is admitting you have a problem and I think the minister has done that. Given that the minister has more than 50-50 chance of being the next Taoiseach it might count for something. We’ll wait and see.” “Sadly, Wexford is facing the same problems today as outlined in a rural development strategy prepared by Peter Bacon back in 2001. At the time Bacon stated there was evidence of high levels of deprivation and exclusion in Wexford when the trend nationally was for a decline in levels of deprivation and exclusion. Here we are sixteen years later and very little has changed,” Wallace said. Wallace also endorsed the Minister for Social Protection’s suggestion that more should be invested in Rosslare Port. Minister Varadkar told Deputy Wallace there was potential for “Rosslare Port to become a more important sea facility because we may, depending on trade arrangements with Britain, need far more direct links with France. We should invest more in Rosslare Port. We are somewhat constrained by EU state aid rules and by the port being attached to Irish Rail. Part

of the response to Brexit could be a recognition that if Britain continues on its current course, a transition fund will be needed. We will need to look at facilities like Rosslare Port… and say that we will need special investment, with the support of the EU, in direct links between the island of Ireland and the continent of Europe. Perhaps there is an opportunity there which should be pursued,” the Minister said. The Wexford TD said it would be wonderful if there was investment in Rosslare Port, but cautioned that it wasn’t a complete solution to the county’s economic, social and mental health problems. “Whatever funds the Government have should be diverted towards an autonomous, strong, third-level facility for Wexford and/or upgrading our rail and port infrastructure so workers and students can viably commute to Dublin. Currently we’re spending hundreds of millions building a new courthouse, a new Garda station and roads. I’ve yet to come across the research that shows a new courthouse contributes positively to a region.” Transcript of full debate here: http://oireachtasdebates.oireachtas.ie/debates%20authoring/debat eswebpack.nsf/takes/dail20170411 00028?opendocument. Minister Paul kehoe has welcomed the multinational US medical equipment supplier, Becton Dickinson, to Enniscorthy. The company has acquired CR Bard Inc (Clearstream) which employs around 400 people in its Enniscorthy plant. “Becton Dickinson medical technology company has a long-
established track record of investment in Ireland employing over 600 people in their Irish sites in Dun Laoghaire, Drogheda and Limerick, with an expansion of 100 jobs announced in Limerick late last year. “The Bard (Clearstream) facility in Enniscorthy… is a massive asset to the town. There
is a dedicated, talented and committed workforce based out in the facility. I am hopeful that this acquisition will lead to further investment down the line and I am looking forward to working with Beckon Dickenson to cement the company’s relationship with Enniscorthy and Wexford over the coming months and years.” n

The future of CE Schemes A range of new Government measures designed to protect the future of Community Employment (CE) Schemes will widen the range of people in Wexford who can take part. That’s according to Fine Gael TD for Wexford Minister Paul kehoe. “Thankfully the number of CE Scheme participants has fallen as the Live Register continues to fall. The latest CSO data for March shows that the Live Register dropped by 38.18% in Wexford since the launch of Fine Gael’s Action Plan for Jobs in February 2012. The national
unemployment rate is now down to 6.4 %, which is down from 8.3 % a year ago. “However it’s important we make these reforms to the Scheme to ensure a greater number of long-term unemployed people here in Wexford can take up the places, gain valuable skills and experience, and support community services. “There will be a strong focus on social inclusion in the future alongside the traditional purpose of helping people into the workforce. CE Schemes provide work
experience and training for people who are long-term unemployed, but they also benefit communities across the county by supporting community services in childcare, health and social care, outdoor works and local facilities. Here in Wexford the overall number of scheme places available in 2017 will be 1,336. CE will continue to be the largest programme this year with 1,015 places available. The balance will be made up of 40 placements in the Rural Social Scheme and 281 places in Tús.” n

Wexford County Council announces partnership with Bank of Ireland
South East – lagging behind Unemployment has fallen to the lowest level since 2008, according to official figures, but there are regions that are still suffering from the effects of the recessionand none more so than the South East which has a 9.4% unemployment rate – nearly 3% higher than the average national rate of 6.7% and well above the lowest 5.3% rate in the Mid-East (kildare, Meath and Wicklow).
Recent analysis has also revealed that in addition to the highest unemployment rate, the South East is one of only three regions whose recovery rate is below average since unemployment was at its peak. The Department of Jobs remains optimistic about the South East region saying the core objective of its South East Plan, which was launched in September 2015, is to see a
further 25,000 at work in the region by 2020 and reduce the unemployment rate to within one percentage point of the State average and it believes good progress is being made. It says the South East had the fastest rate of jobs growth of any region in the country with 18% growth since 2012 and that 215,000 people are now at work in the South East. n
Wexford County Council has announced it is embarking on an exciting new 5-year partnership with Bank of Ireland to deliver a unique enterprise start-up facility. Commenting on the partn e r s h i p l a u n c h M r To m Enright, Chief Executive of Wexford County Council said, “We are delighted to be celebrating this partnership with Bank of Ireland. Having visited Bank of Ireland Workbench sites we were excited about the prospect of working together to deliver a new regional concept for start-up enterprise that can rival city locations. 21

Another major national conference in Enniscorthy on Wednesday and Thursday 29th and 30th March, Enniscorthy hosted yet another major national conference at the Riverside Park Hotel – Collaborate Locally to Compete Globally – Local Authorities supporting Tourism. In his Opening Address Wexford County Chairman Paddy Kavanagh welcomed the large attendance to his home town saying that in relation to tourism Enniscorthy has it all, history, culture, beauty and old world charm and its people are immensely proud of where they come from. Paddy went on to welcome the Chairs of 31 local authorities from all over Ireland saying that their presence at the Conference was indicative of the level of commitment to tourism and the tourist sector in every county the length and breadth of the island. Minister of State for Tourism and Sport, Patrick O’Donovan, who opened the Conference, said that if the industry is going to continue
to grow branding alone is not enough, ‘We need to involve all County Chairmen and all County CEOs to get the job done.’ He said that it is imperative that we get Ireland’s Ancient East off the ground and on par with The Wild Atlantic Way, getting a laugh from the audience with his quote from comedian Brendan Grace, ‘Ireland’s ancient coastline has been there for millennia and the government only discovered it three years ago.’ The Minister went on to say that the Conference should become an annual event and complimented all who were involved in the organising of it. He was lavish in his praise of the thirty-three speakers over the two days including CEOs of Failte Ireland, Waterways Ireland, Abbey Tours, Tayto Park, Wexford Festival Opera, Tourism Ireland and Trip Advisor to name but a few. “People are looking for an entire experience now”, he said, “when they come on holiday. It isn’t enough any more
to leave them to their own devices to enjoy nature and scenery. I once remarked to Jimmy Deenehan that the rivers and the mountains in Kerry were spectacular and his reply was, ‘Yeah but you can’t eat em’. We need each county to look at the experience they have to offer – for some it could be as simple as ‘A Day In The Bog’ and work on ways of advertising and providing that to the visitor. Today and tomorrow are all about sharing ideas and collaboration and each county thinking about what it can do and how we can each compliment the other.” The highlight of the twoday event was a Gala Banquet on Wednesday evening at the Riverside Park where Enniscorthy Historical Reenactment Society as Redcoats and Pikemen, complete with musket and pike, formed a guard of honour for the guests and escorted them into the function room, giving them a flavour of Enniscorthy’s Living History. – Maria Nolan

The conversation moved on to dogs that are used for epileptic patients who can sense the imminent fit coming on before it ever happens. The truth is these and most animals (if not all) are not looking to see what 'hair do' we have in the morning, they're reading our energy field, the electromagnetic field around us and it's the changes in this field that they are picking up and if we listen to them they'll let us know in their own way. They are way ahead of us in so many ways and I'll leave you with a prayer that a fellow told me recently. 'Lord help me be the person my dog thinks I am!!' n –––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––– TIMELy REMINDERS: Flea treatment as the weather is getting warmer. We are passionate about dogs and have been working with them for many years. Ensuring the dogs in our care are happy and safe is our main priority.
Dogs never cease to amaze me. A client came in a few days ago and was speaking about a dog that has been trained to pick up cancer in people in its early stages. I'd often heard of 'sniffer dogs' picking up drugs in airports etc and you'd reckon that they're working off an extremely acute sense of smell but to be picking up on someone with the early stages of cancer seems way beyond logic, and that's where we're limited because we're using logic to explain everything. Sometimes we've got to just trust that there are other ways of doing things that no amount of mental arithmetic can solve.

A local contributor looks at life today in Enniscorthy and beyond THe labour ParTy The Labour Party, of which Wexford TD Brendan Howlin is leader, recently held its annual conference in Wexford. While the economic benefit of having 800 or so people in the area for a few days is welcome, one has to look at the proceedings with a cynical eye. The Party passed motions on all sorts of issues and Howlin’s speech, if taken in isolation, said all the right things. As an outsider looking in one would get the impression that this party was a new, fledging group which wanted to right all the wrongs which had been inflicted on the populace over the last few years. But wait a minute, did the Labour Party not play a major part in the austerity government which held office from 2011 to 2016? Did Brendan Howlin not hold the office of Minister for Public Expenditure and Reform during this period and as such cut public expenditure to such an extent that basic services were brutally adversely affected? Did he not get the nickname of the Minister for Austerity? Did his colleague Joan Burton, as Minister for Social Protection, not cut contributory old age pensions for thousands of people, women in particular, who had worked for 30 and 40 years? Did she not cut many other benefits to single parents and others who desperately needed help during the greatest recession this country has ever
seen? Did Ruari Quinn as Minister for Education not totally renege on a signed pledge given publicly to the students of Ireland in relation to student grants? Quite frankly one has to draw the conclusion that these people are either living in a world of illusion or they think that the electorate as a body is plain stupid. This party was demolished at the last election, losing 30 of 37 seats and they still haven’t got the message. They are running a Labour rebuild campaign which they think will resurrect the party. Well I have news for them. They are wasting their time. After the next general election, whenever that arrives, I predict that their seat numbers will be down to about two or three if they are lucky. With the exception of Howlin in Wexford (and remember he won’t be as cosy next time out in view of the fact that he will be unable to deliver anything to Wexford in this Dáil) and Sean Sherlock in Cork, Labour’s other current five TDs will be toast. Joan Burton, Willie Penrose, Jan O’ Sullivan and Brendan Ryan are in my opinion gone if they even stand. None of them are spring chickens and the pensions these people will get make it extremely attractive to get out rather than be thrown out. Strangely, Alan Kelly in Tipperary may survive because at least he is a fighter and has the energy to go on. With regard to the rest of their candidates

View from the Hill such as those who lost out last time I can’t see even one of them getting back in. While they have some younger councillors here and there these people will be eclipsed by the likes of Sinn Fein and other left wing candidates in a general election. They need to cop themselves on, get rid of the arrogance (Oh we did what was right for the country) and put their hands up and say ‘Sorry’. They must take a leaf out of Fianna Fail’s book and profusely apologise to their former supporters and the people they were supposed to represent. Admit that the promises made in 2011, remember the Tesco advts and Labour’s way or Frankfurt’s way, were a sham and that they lost
sight of the pensioners and other less-well-off people in this country. They must admit that the feel of power, remember Alan Kelly, “Power is an addiction”, went to their heads and that the Leinster House power trip led them astray. If they do these things and forget the arrogant, high-filutin speeches and stop taking the public for fools, they might get back to about 10 or 12 seats over about four elections. Other than that the Wexford conference may be the last relatively large gathering of the Labour Party we will see in this country. liTTer The people of Enniscorthy are rightly very proud of the general litter-free condition of their town.
This is a result of citizens being reasonably careful and responsible when it comes to disposing of rubbish. The council must also be complimented on their role and more than any other group the volunteers of the Tidy Towns group deserve the thanks of all. Regrettably, when you venture outside the town the same good situation does not prevail. Our county and main roads are in a bad way. Litter is strewn long the hedgerows of almost every single road in the county and it is getting worse. These roads are too far flung for volunteers to mount major clean-up operations and the sheer amount and diverse content of what is there indicates that only the council can tackle this. In some areas local communities are doing trojan work but I think that most readers will understand the point I am making in relation to the many miles of roads in our county. Those responsible for this dumping are doing so on a minor industrial scale in some parts of the county with entire truckloads of matter being dumped in farmers gateways and laneways. Strangely, the land owner then becomes responsible for this and is liable to severe fines under present legislation while the filthy perpetrator walks or drives away scot free. The cost of properly disposing of the rubbish is therefore carried by the innocent party. Greater enforce-
ment is necessary but of course this comes at a cost. County Council budgets should be looked at to see where monies for this can be found. Councils are crippled in relation to accessing cash for projects such as enforcement of the litter acts. The way our money is distributed by the state is questionable to say the least. For instance to allow hundreds of thousands of euro to be spent by the National Roads Authority putting a footpath from Scarawalsh to Ferns seems a peculiar decision while the local county council hasn’t the money to enforce vital legislation. Things like this seem very strange. Apart from Phil Hogan’s total destruction of the pillars of local government, no proper review of the functions and powers of councils has ever taken place. The bottom line is that unless councils are given full and proper control of all monies spent in their areas we will have to live with this litter problem for some time to come. Holiday Time It’s almost holiday time again. The missus and myself were trying to figure out where to go and I mused, “ I’d love to go somewhere different this year.” She quickly responded, “That’s easy, try the kitchen.” n We are often asked: Who is the “View from the Hill” columnist? All we can say is that the author’s surname is NOT Doyle!

SCHOOLS LACK SUPPORT Fianna Fáil Spokesperson on mental Health and local Td, James browne, says his party is looking to secure additional educational psychologists for primary and secondary schools in Wexford. Deputy Browne some weeks ago revealed that 29 schools in Wexford have been left without a psychologist service. The National Educational Psychological Service works with both primary and postprimary schools and is concerned with learning, behaviour,
social and emotional development. “Minister for Education Richard Bruton recently confirmed to Fianna Fáil that NEPS is drastically understaffed. This is leading to a situation where many schools… have been left without an educational psychologist. This in turn is having a detrimental impact on students as delays in accessing assessments for special education needs is resulting in them missing out on vital learning supports,” explained Deputy Browne. n

A call to the men of Bunclody do you find yourself at a loose end during the week? are you fed up sitting around with nothing to do? are you retired from work and missing the buzz you used to get admiring a job well done? are you getting under someone’s feet at home? If the answer is yes to all or any one of the foregoing questions then perhaps you’d be interested in doing what several of us men in Enniscorthy did and establish a “Shed”. What you might ask is a shed? Well let me explain. The “Men’s Shed” movement has become a national phenomenon. It’s a place where men with time on their hands get together in a central location to help each other by talking over a cup of tea. Or exchanging skills, for example, our members are a mixture of artists, woodturners, fitters, builders, drivers and computer literate people and indeed one author. We are willing to exchange skills and help each other to learn a new one. Or if you just want to sit and read the newspaper while enjoying a cup of tea or coffee that’s okay. No one will bother you.
COUNTYWIDE FUNDING minister Paul Kehoe Td has highlighted the availability of funding in two areas. Funding is now available for local communities who wish to install and maintain CCTV security systems in their area, to increase public safety and to deter illegal or anti-social behaviour. Applications can be made via the Department of Justice. Forms are available: http://justice.ie/en/JELR/Pages/Dept_of _Justice_and_Equality_Forms We x f o r d y o u t h c l u b s encouraged to apply for new funding… Minister Kehoe is encouraged local youth clubs to apply
for grants under a new €1.17 million fund announced by the Minister for Children and Youth Affairs, Dr Katherine Zappone. “This year’s Local Youth Club Grant Scheme will see €60,502 allocated to the Waterford/ Wexford Education and Training Board for local volunteer led youth groups. Youth groups and clubs across Wexford will soon be able to apply to the Waterford/Wexford Education and Training Board (ETB) for funding under this scheme. “Youth clubs are part of the fabric of communities here in Wexford and must be supported. “Thanks to our recovering
economy, the Government was able to increase this year’s funding for youth clubs by 10%. “The scheme is open to approximately 1,600 youth groups and clubs, with an estimated 90,000 club members around the country. So I strongly encourage Wexford groups and clubs to apply for this funding to ensure that our local communities can benefit. “Each ETB will be advertising the scheme locally and on their website in the coming months. So I encourage all Wexford youth groups to keep an eye out and get their applications ready.” n

What would a “Shed” do for you, you might ask. If I was to tell you that at least two of our members were contemplating suicide before they came to the shed and are now enjoying the company of sympathetic companions with no further thought of doing what they had in mind earlier, would that peak your interest? We have a mixture of married and single men all of whom are retired and with a variety of educational achievements. No one questions what those are. We are all equal and there’s no boss. What do we do at the “Shed”? The first ever project was to make a Cannon for the 1798 Congratulations to all involved in the recent Ferns Tidy Towns awards – a great occasion involving the whole community coming together and celebrating their success in the Tidy Towns competition and also acknowledging those who have made a difference to the community. This year John McGrath of Inspire Garden Design very kindly took on the task of judging the various categories of Best Presented Shop Front for Shop, Public House and Commercial, and also the best presented Residential Area and Residential Garden. The mini Tidy Towns members and the Green Schools Committee were also thanked and received awards for their outstanding work and contribution to the community.
Commemoration. The lads went up to visit the National Museum in Dublin to get the specifications, worked to the design the museum staff supplied and produced an actual working cannon. Other projects worked on include, Fairy Doors, Bird Boxes, Benches for the local hospital and making Buddy Benches for the local children’s school. The Shed is a national movement and a registered charity. We are properly insured and compliant with Health and Safety regulations. The thing I enjoy most of all about the “Shed” is the banter at tea break. The slagging can be fierce at times but never vicious or personal. Caroline gets motoring
audi TT review by Caroline Kidd
The audi TT was launched back in 1998 and since then it’s become something of a modern design icon. it’s undoubtedly a very stylish and desirable car, but for the third generation of the car audi engineers worked to add more substance to the style. it’s been reengineered with a lightweight construction to improve acceleration, handling and fuel consumption. The third generation of the Audi TT coupé retains the classic TT silhouette but with a bit more aggression and chiselling all round that from afar makes it more like a mini R8. Xenon headlamps come as standard, with full LED lamps front and rear on S line models. There are 18” alloys on the entry model, with 19” on S line cars. Inside, the TT has a suitably plush interior with some beautiful design elements like the circular air vents that also house the controls for the heating and air conditioning. It’s a very distinct interior and it’s
audi tt
completely focused around the driver. Audi’s virtual cockpit is standard and gives the driver full control of all the car’s functions through some simple swipes and selections from steering wheel mounted controls, with information displayed in the driver’s line of sight. The TT is described as a 2+2 coupe but don’t even consider those extra seats in the back as anything beyond a bit of extra storage. It’s tight back there. But in terms of boot space,
it’s actually quite easy to access and practical as the boot opens like that of a traditional hatchback. The rear seats can also be let down for more space. In terms of engines, the Audi TT is available with a 1.8TFSI turbo petrol engine with 180hp, a 2.0TFSI with 230hp or a 2.0TDI diesel with 184hp. There are manual and automatic gearboxes. Standard models are front wheel drive, though there is the option of quattro four wheel drive for extra grip.
In terms of pricing, Sport models with the 1.8TFSI start from €44,500, while S line starts from €48,000. Standard equipment on Sport models includes 18” alloys, alcantara and leather sports seats, electric parking brake, flat bottomed steering wheel, the virtual cockpit, air con and cruise control. S line models add a lowered sports suspension, sportier bumpers, side sills, rear diffuser, 19” alloys, LED lights front and back, electric lumbar support, and auto
every month bunclody native Caroline Kidd brings you the best from the world of motoring, including car reviews, news and more. Caroline is a member of the irish motoring Writers’ association (imWa) and a jury member for irish Car of The year. you can follow her blog Changing lanes at www.changinglanes.ie. lights and wipers. The Audi TT does not disappoint on the road. You are positioned low in the car with all the controls at your fingertips so there is a pure driving thrill to the TT. This car is very much the kind of sports car you could easily drive every day because the comfort and refinement of the car is just as good as any of Audi’s more mainstream models. Naturally the centre of gravity is low so the TT is perfectly flat and balanced through corners at speed with what seems like neverending levels of grip, even in standard front wheel drive form. The steering is quick to respond to inputs too. My test car had the 1.8TFSI with an automatic gearbox and will cost €280 per year to tax, while 40mpg seems achievable in every day driving with a bit of care. This engine is down on power and torque compared to the 2.0-litre petrol, but it can still move quickly sprinting to
100kmh from a standstill in 7 seconds, accompanied by a meaty growl. The automatic gearbox is quick and seamless to shift gear and you can make the car a bit sharper and more responsive by selecting the dynamic mode from the Audi drive select system that comes as standard on S line models. The Audi TT coupé is not a cheap car to buy but it’s a top quality product, with a stunning design inside and out. The Audi TT is a true, driver-focused sports coupé – from the way you are positioned in the car and how you interact with the controls, to the fun and rewards this car gives when you let it loose on a back road. The Audi TT remains a classic! model tested: Audi TT 1.8TFSI S-Tronic S line Price: €50,600 Power: 180bhp 0-100km/h: 7 seconds Claimed Economy: 47mpg CO2 emissions: 136g/km Motor tax: €280 per year n

Strawberry Half Significant upgrade of wastewater treatment facilities in Enniscorthy Marathon & 5 Mile Race a new project, in partnership with Wexford County Council, is expected to be delivered over a two year period. it will involve the upgrade and expansion of the existing enniscorthy wastewater treatment plant and the decommissioning of the existing Killagoley wastewater treatment plant along with extensive upgrade work to three pumping stations, construction of a new foul sewer and sewer rehabilitation works. Enniscorthy is one of 38 locations around Ireland where there is inadequate treatment of wastewater being discharged into waterways. This project will address these deficiencies and ensure that wastewater is fully treated and is compliant with all licence requirements and environmental regulations before being discharged into the River Slaney. It will also provide the additional capacity to allow for future economic and population growth in the Enniscorthy area. A contract has been signed with the joint venture Ward & Burke Construction Limited
and Response Engineering Limited, who will carry out the works on behalf of Irish Water. Mark M u r r a y, Infrastructure Programme Regional Lead with Irish Water, commented: “This is a significant infrastructure project in the Wexford region which will address deficiencies with wastewater treatment in Enniscorthy town and the surrounding area. This large scale investment will sustain and enhance the environment by improving water quality in the River Slaney while at the same time facilitating future growth and economic development by providing increased capacity at the treatment plant. “Irish Water and its partners in this project will work hard to keep any disruption to residents, businesses and visitors to a minimum while this vital work is taking place and we would like to apologise in advance for any inconvenience that may result.” The work is due to get underway in the coming weeks and, in addition to the upgrade
of the treatment plant, will include extensive mechanical and electrical upgrade work to three pumping stations located at the Promenade, St John’s and Spring Valley, including the provision of flood measures at the Promenade pumping station. It will also include construction of a new foul sewer along Esmonde Road to divert flows from Killagoley to the Spring Valley pumping station and sewer rehabilitation work on Spring Valley Road. While this work is taking place there will be some restrictions on access to a number of roads and pedestrian areas in Esmonde Road, Spring Valley Road, St Anne’s Road and part of the Promenade. The project team will notify the local community in advance of planned works in their areas and contact details will be provided should they have any queries. The team will also work closely with An Garda Síochána and Wexford County Council Roads Department to manage traffic while the works are underway. n

it’s 50 years since the first Strawberry Fair was held in enniscorthy and during the intervening years the fortunes of the Fair have fluctuated to reflect the changing attitudes of the day. While it is true to say the festival for many years reached incredible heights in terms of national popularity, rivalling as it did The Rose of Tralee Festival in Kerry and The Mary from Dungloe Festival in Donegal, it is also true to say its popularity plummeted in recent years because of changing social norms and the huge drop-off in support for such events. All that is about to change, however, with the clearest indications emerging that the 2017 festival will see a return to the halcyon days of care-free outdoor entertainment from the

Creative Ireland gets the thumbs-up! a massive crowd of over two hundred interested individuals turned out last month at the C o u n t y C o u n c i l o ff i c e s , Carriglawn, Wexford, to endorse the Government’s new cultural initiative creative ireland – a culture-based programme designed to promote individual, community and national well-being. Presenter of the Creative Ireland Programme, John Concannon, began by saying how overwhelmed he was by the turn-out in Wexford, the largest to date of the eighteen venues visited, indicating the level of interest and commitment to the project in the county. 2016, he went on to say, was a milestone in many ways in I r i s h s o c i e t y, i n t e r m s o f Citizenship, Identity and Culture, and Creative Ireland intends to continue and build on that legacy. The Programme is all about Collaboration, Community and Internationalisation. ‘It is in fact our legacy for the future.’ There are five pillars to the five-year plan: 1. Enabling the creative potential of every child. 2.

Enabling creativity in every Community. 3. Investing in our creative and cultural infrastructure. 4. Ireland as a Centre of Excellence in Media Production. 5. Unifying our global reputation. ‘This is an invitation’, John said, ‘to the entire country to get involved in something truly inspirational. To facilitate an ecosystem of creativity. In 2016 over 3,500 events were organised by volunteers and members of the general public to commemorate
the birth of the Nation along with all the official events like Easter Monday and projects like the restoration of the Athenaeum` – a project very dear to John’s heart having been closely involved and instrumental in bringing it to its final conclusion. Before opening the evening to debate and discussion in the numerous workshops, John reminded all that, ‘Promoting creativity provides us with a strategy for individual well-being, social cohesion and economic
success’. And with over seventy million people throughout the world identifying themselves as Irish the potential is unlimited. The workshops were asked to consider and discuss two questions: 1. What did they like about the Programme and 2. What did they want for Wexford from this Programme. Everything was recorded by facilitators and all feedback will be examined and included in a Culture and Creativity Plan for the county for the next five years.
Minister Paul Kehoe wrapping up said that the Government was totally committed to Creative Ireland and he complimented John Concannon on his wonderful presentation and congratulated Minister Humphreys on the imaginative initiative. He told those present to go to page thirty of the Creative Ireland Programme where it is outlined what will be achieved in year one, or by the end of 2017, demonstrating the Government’s sincerity and support for the project.
Minister Kehoe also complimented and thanked all those present at the Forum for their creative and varied ideas and suggestions for the county moving forward and he assured them that their input would be listened to and acted on. ‘Culture and creativity are the greatest assets of any society. It is our duty to do everything we can to unleash the full potential of our people. That is what this initiative is all about.’ – maria nolan
