A vote of confidence in Enniscorthy! Two Ministers launch two major projects in town on the same day Pic: James Quirke

Students Nikita Davitt and Steven O’Sullivan made a presentation to Minister Bruton at official launch of the Enniscorthy Further Education and Training Centre.

Gonzaga House – a new home for adult education & training The official launch of the Enniscorthy Further Education a n d Tr a i n i n g C e n t r e a t gonzaga House, 23 Wafer Street, Enniscorthy, took place on Friday, 26th may, in the presence of minister for Education & Skills, Richard Bruton Td, representatives o f Wa t e r f o r d We x f o r d Education and Training Board, local politicians and staff and students at the centre. The Enniscorthy Further Education and Training Centre occupies the top floors of

Gonzaga House over “The Wilds” restaurant. It encompasses a range of educational provision for the town of Enniscorthy and its environs under the auspices of the Waterford Wexford Education and Training Board (WWETB). Since moving into the premises in November 2016 progress has been rapid and dynamic with a range of programmes now on offer including: ● VTOS ● BTEI ● Literacy Service

Guidance Service and Community Education If the pace of learning and programme delivery is an indication of the success of the centre, the future is full of promise. The Enniscorthy Further Education and Training Centre represents a huge asset to the town of Enniscorthy and all the stakeholders including the Employment Services, Dept of Social Protection, Local Government and Library Service amongst others. ● ●

It is located in the recently renovated building, Gonzaga House, which has been carefully restored, both inside and out, during a two-year renovation programme, to retain as many as possible of its original features. Gonzaga House recently won an award from the Enniscorthy Tidy Towns Committee. It was originally built in 1872 as a convent for the Loreto order and was run as a school by Sr. Mary Gonzaga Barry, hence the name. It became a

hospital in the 1960s having been rebuilt in the 1930s with the large water tower and other additions made. So it has come full circle with the provision of education to learners once again. Worldwide the provision of education has been a process of capacity building for the individual and society. The Mission Statement of the Enniscorthy Further Education and Training Centre contains the line… “an open accessible programme of learning

structured around the needs of the individual learner”. In the words of Nelson Mandela, “Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.” So Enniscorthy now has that powerful weapon at the disposal of the inhabitants of the town and surrounding areas. n

ciencies and ensure that wastewater is fully treated and is compliant with all licence requirements and environmental regulations before being discharged into the River Slaney. It will also provide the additional capacity to allow for future economic and population growth in the area. The work will involve the upgrade and expansion of the existing Enniscorthy wastewater treatment plant and the decommissioning of the existing Kilagoley wastewater treatment plant along with extensive upgrade work to three pumping stations, construction of a new foul sewer and sewer rehabilitation works. The project, which is being delivered in partnership with Wexford County Council, will be carried out by the Ward & Burke Group. It is planned to be delivered over a two year period. Welcoming the start of the project, Minister Coveney commented: “This is a very significant investment in Enniscorthy

and I am delighted to be here to turn the sod on a project which will have many benefits for the town and the wider area. This work will lead not only to a big improvement in the quality of water in the River Slaney by ensuring that all wastewater is fully treated before being discharged into the river, but it will also provide the capacity for future residential and commercial growth in the town.” Work is due to get underway over the coming weeks and, in addition to the upgrade of the treatment plant, will include extensive mechanical and electrical upgrade work to three pumping stations located at the Promenade, St John’s and Spring Valley, including the provision of flood measures at the Promenade pumping station. It will also include construction of a new foul sewer along Esmonde Road to divert flows from Kilagoley to the Spring Valley pumping station and sewer rehabilitation work on Spring Valley Road. n

Security researchers have had a busy time since the WannaCry ransomware outbreak that wreaked havoc on computers worldwide. News of the infection and the subsequent viral images showing everything from large display terminals to kiosks being affected created pandemonium in ways that haven’t been seen lately. Claims of WannaCry being distributed via email may have been an easy mistake to make. Not only was the malware outbreak occurring on a Friday afternoon, but around the same time a new ransomware campaign was being heavily distributed via malicious email and the popular Necurs botnet. The ‘ransomworm’ that took the world by storm was not distributed via an email malspam campaign. Rather, research shows, this nasty worm was spread via an operation that hunts down vulnerable public facing SMB (Server_Message_Block) ports and then uses the EternalBlue exploit to get on the network and then the DoublePulsar exploit to establish persistence and allow for the installation of the WannaCry Ransomware. Malware analysis is difficult and it can take some time to determine attribution to a specific group, and/or to assess the functionality of a particular campaign – especially late on a Friday (which BTW, can all you hackers quit making releases on Fridays!!). First, comes stopping the attack, second comes analysing the attack. Remember, patience is a virtue. Update, update, UPDATE! Microsoft released patches for these exploits prior to their weaponisation. Granted, patches weren’t available for all Operating Systems, but the patch was available for the vast majority of machines. This event even forced Microsoft to release a patch for Windows XP – which gets back to the first thing that was said. UPDATE! Why are there still machines on XP!? These machines are vulnerable (beyond this attack) to the ransomware functionality of this attack and they need to be updated or completely changed. Gin & Cold Feet!

The ambience of the Castle drawing room was vintage and decadent on Saturday evening, 20th may, as author Carmel Harrington was in conversation with one of Ireland’s leading novelists, Sinead moriarty, as the packed drawing room audience sipped gin cocktails from china teacups poured from china teapots. In the relaxed, candlelit atmosphere, the two authors discussed love, life, family, friends, childhood and books. Sinead Moriarty’s mother was also a writer and Sinead grew up in a house and a world of books and always wanted to write as did Carmel Harrington. They both believe in writing about not what they know but about what they can find out and as they laughed and chatted and sipped the audience was more than eager to join in with questions and asides until the speakeasy aura was disturbed

by the sudden appearance of Sir Writes-a-Lot, the Castle’s literary ghost, who made a presentation to Carmel on behalf of the Festival committee to celebrate her recent news – being chosen to write the In Between Years – a book about the characters in Cold Feet since the ITV series finished in 2003. ITV decided to re-introduce the series last year and invited submissions from wellknown authors to write the in between years and only recently Carmel found out that she beat off stiff competition to be chosen and is about to begin working with ITV producer, Mike Bullen, on Cold Feet – The Lost Years. How cool is that for Carmel and for Wexford Literary Festival. Could we perhaps be looking at another red carpet event here in Enniscorthy – the mind boggles! – Maria Nolan

Enniscorthy’s new hospital

Enniscorthy’s new hospital is actually 76 years old! and it’s not actually a hospital for humans, it’s a hospital for pets – The moyne Veterinary Hospital on the Old dublin Road. In early October 1941, a young, enthusiastic man came back to his home town of Enniscorthy, eager to start out on his own and forge a new chapter in Enniscorthy's history. That man was Simon Kavanagh. He set up a veterinary practice in a simple premises in Templeshannon. The practice had humble beginnings… in his first six months of business Simon only treated three animals and, as he said himself, two out of the three died!! It was the middle of the war years, nobody had much money and animals were dying of hunger as much as anything else.

Moyne Veterinary Hospital partner, Joe Kavanagh

In the 76 years since then the practice has grown, developed and moved with the times to a new location on the Old Dublin Road but the founding principles still stand firm – loyalty, kindness and integrity. The latest development means the Moyne Veterinary Clinic on the Old Dublin Road is now officially the Moyne Veterinary Hospital after its recent official upgrading by the accrediting body – the Veterinary Council of Ireland – following a vigorous inspection and compliance procedure in accordance with Part 9 of the Veterinary Practice Act 2005 under which the Veterinary Council introduced a mandatory Premises Accreditation Scheme (PAS).

31 May 2017

www.slaneynews.com

The upgrading is a huge achievement making the Moyne Veterinary Hospital the only pet hospital in Enniscorthy and one of only a handful in the whole of the South East region. The partners in the practice – Joe Kavanagh, Larry Wall and Tom O’Shea have a dediacted team of professionals working with them in the hospital including vets, vet nurses, and admin staff. The practice is already one of the biggest in the South East and with its new hospital designation coupled with its continuous upgrading of equipment, technology and facilities, it’s sure to grow even further and continue to attract the best staff and provide the best possible service for its many clients. Currently the hospital offers full blood analysis (haematology, biochemistry), gas anaesthetic, digital x-rays, ultrasound, dermatological testing, kinesiology, bioenergy, prescription diets, herbal remedies, homeopathy, allergy testing, and a lot more. Regular readers of the Slaney News will be glad to know that the Moyne Veterinary Hospital will continue to contribute informative, pet articles to our paper (see page 23 every issue) and a new hospital website and logo will be launched soon – keep an eye out for that. Partner Joe Kavanagh says, “To the people of the town, its hinterland, and the county we owe a huge debt of gratitude for entrusting your animals in our care. We wish to say a heartfelt ‘Thank You’ to all our loyal and faithful clients.” The moyne Veterinary Hospital is situated on the Old dublin Road, Enniscorthy. T: (053) 9233187, 9236674. Enniscorthy Credit Union marks great achievement

Enniscorthy Credit Union Chairman Pat O’Shea presents a cheque to Donard N.S. principal, Sinead Parnell, for €1,250 to mark Donard’s All-Ireland Quiz success.

Congratulations to Shane Kehoe, Leah Murphy, Brídín Quigley and Cormac Fleming of Donard National School, Poulpeasty, who recently won the Under 11 All-Ireland Credit Union Schools’ Quiz – a huge achievement considering the school has only 82 pupils and four teachers in total and they were competing against schools with ten times that size. Enniscorthy Credit Union kindly made a presentation of a cheque for €1,250 and commemorative certs and framed photos to Donard School to mark that wonderful achievement. It was the first time ever that a school representing Enniscorthy Credit Union won the All-Ireland title. n

Enniscorthy’s Cathy launches new tour

Heritage Tours Wexford proprietor, Enniscorthy’s Cathy Keane (second from left), was joined by Orla Woods, Failte Ireland representative Wexford, Brendan Howlin TD, Tom Banville, Head of Wexford’s Local Enterprise Office, and representatives of Hook Lighthouse, Tintern Abbey, Loftus Hall, Dunbrody Famine Ship, and some Enniscorthy re-enactors.

Heritage Tours Wexford is a welcome boost to the tourism industry in the county. It has just commenced a new, thriceweekly ‘Hook Highlights Bus Tour’. This first-of-its-kind tour can be booked on a seatby-seat basis and leaves from the Tourist Office on the quay front in Wexford town. The tour runs every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday morning at 9am, returning at 5pm. It takes in the most popular heritage sites in the county including the Dunbrody Famine Ship in New Ross, as well as the

Hook Peninsula’s Tintern Abbey, Loftus Hall and the iconic Hook Lighthouse. According to Fáilte Ireland statistics for 2015, 27% of all visitors to South East Ireland did not hire a car. Responding to this gap in the market, Heritage Tours Wexford ensures this sizeable number can now visit our wonderful tourist attractions, complete with a guided tour at each location. As the only licensed tourist bus in Co. Wexford, the Hook Highlights Bus Tour caters for independent travellers or those who just

want to leave the car behind for the day. The tour price of €50 includes entrance fees at all locations. Cathy Keane, of Heritage Tours Wexford, says the tour is not just about the destination, but also about ‘the journey’. ‘Co. Wexford’s Hook Peninsula is the jewel in the crown of Ireland’s Ancient East, the bedrock of Norman Ireland. It has the story of ancient Ireland written on its landscape – be it a castle or an abbey, their continued presence is a reminder of what went before us.’ Cathy

is excited about the chance to show visitors these sites and concludes: ‘All our tour drivers are storytellers and along the way there will be many a cracking story to tell in this ancient part of Ireland.’ The company also offers unique and bespoke tours of South East Ireland including Wicklow, Waterford, Kilkenny and Carlow primarily suited to groups of six or more, but private tours can also be arranged. www.slaneynews.com In addition to trying new sporting and other activities, summer camps provide children with a wonderful opportunity to develop important life skills that can be difficult to achieve in other environments. So here are just a few of the many benefits your children can gain in summer camps. 1. Summer campers can obtain the life skills needed to become successful adults. Some of the skills necessary to become successful adults are communication, collaboration, creativity, leadership, socialisation, and problem solving. All of these areas are fostered in good summer camps. Campers are always communicating with

each other, either on the field or off, learning to work together as a team and as part of a community. Campers also learn to navigate on their own and solve problems by themselves. 2. Summer camps educate the whole child. There is more to learning than

school and exams. Summer camps offers a powerful learning environment and can be a place where a child's social education takes place. It provides children with the opportunity to try new activities. When children succeed at these activities, they build self-esteem.

3. Summer camps allows kids to unplug from technology! Today's average child spends too long every day engaged with technology, which often takes the place of vital handson activities and socialisation opportunities.

4. At camp, there's plenty of time for play, which helps children with social and emotional development. Free and unstructured play is healthy and essential for helping children to reach important social, emotional, and cognitive developmental mile-

11 7

stones. It also helps kids manage stress. 5. Children can reinvent themselves. Children can reinvent themselves at camp and be who they truly want to be, which helps them to build confidence. 6. Promoting independence. Separation from one's parents means a camper has to learn to rely more on him/herself. Children learn to think independently, which builds selfesteem. Enniscorthy is fortunate in having a huge range of camps available this summer, many of which are shown below. So you are spoilt for choice! n

Torn Dreams is back This summer!

it's back! Torn Dreams: The Musical, the first original musical penned by John reilly is returning to the rathnure stage after a 7 year break in Torn Dreams: Revamped! Since 2010, rathnure Pantomime Society has produced a Summer musical each year, along with their annual christmas Panto, and even an original drama. this year, the society has decided to revisit the music of the 60’s with this brilliant musical. it tells the story of two girls divided at birth, whose paths cross later in life in the most coincidental of ways. The story begins in World War II, when a mother is forced to leave her two young girls in the care of their aunt, as she has to go to England to find her husband, presumed lost in battle. A bomb attack on the port as she is coming home has fatal consequences, leaving her two girls as orphans. Their aunt can only afford to keep one of them. She decides to bring up Laura, while placing Sue in the care of the Sisters of Mercy in a convent. The girls must never find out that they are sisters, and this is a horrible secret their aunt must carry through her life. When the girls grow up, they meet as total strangers as they attend St. Mary’s Music and Drama School, where the explosive music of the 1960’s carries them through life. However, coincidence allows both girls to fall for the same boy, and with the Annual Songwriter’s Contest fast approaching, who will win the competition, but more importantly, will their untold secret ever be revealed? There are over 30 Rock n’ Roll numbers to have you dancing in the aisles, including the original song, Torn Dreams. The show runs on 2nd, 3rd, 5th, 6th, 7th and 9th July at 7.45pm nightly and the Box Office is now open on (087) 0687801 or (087) 6954112. If you missed it first time, book your tickets now, if you saw it first time, then come see it again! This is one show you do not want to miss! n

Shakespeare does it at the Wexford Literary Festival On the 19th May the 4th Annual Wexford Literary Festival kicked off with a magnificent night of drama at The Presentation Centre with their newly introduced One Act Drama Award. An excellent night of entertainment at its very best as Wexford Literary Festival and Enniscorthy Drama Group teamed up to stage the four shortlisted plays Isherholz Calls by Kay Phillips from Arizona, Pitchfork by Kelby Guilfoyle from Tralee, Co. Kerry, One Solitary Line by Neil Walden from Cheltenham and Chop by popular bloggar Nicola Cassidy. The actors of EDG did a marvellous job directing and performing the plays and judges Elizabeth Whyte, Tom Mooney and Alison Martin had a difficult decision choosing a winner but after much deliberation came to the conclusion that One Solitary Line – a Shakespeareanstyle piece packed with the most wonderfully descriptive cruel insults and exotic remarks came out on top. All four plays were well staged and well performed. One Solitary Line was flawless – extremely well written, well directed and very well per-

formed by Gemma Delaney who also directed, and Teresa Boyle. Both girls gave it everything they had and could most definitely grace a straight Shakespearean production if Friday night was anything to go by. Their diction, their movements, their facial expressions, their gestures, their stage presence, their superb acting – both ladies would do the bard of Avon proud and congratulations to them and to playwright Neil Walden who unfortunately couldn’t be there on the night but actresses Gemma Delaney and Teresa Boyle were delighted to accept the Award on his behalf. C h a i r m a n o f We x f o rd County Council, Paddy Kavanagh, performed the official opening of the Festival speaking to a full house at the Presentation he said that from humble beginnings Wexford Literary Festival had gone global and his praise for the Festival Committee and Enniscorthy Drama was elaborate as he welcomed the addition of the Anthony Cronin Poetry Award and the One Act Drama Award. The winning playwright received a cheque for €300 and the 2017 winner’s trophy. – Maria Nolan

Richard Navarro in Wexford Arts Centre

For the first time this June, Ireland will be welcoming the extraordinary vocalist and multi-instrumentalist Richard Navarro, making Wexford Arts Centre his first stop on a national tour on Thursday 15th June. Evocative and uplifting, his original songs take the folk traditions of melody and storytelling and supercharge them through live looping and improvisation. Along with Nicholas Thurston (double bass/guitar/synths), the duo have regularly supported Joan Armatrading on her UK tours and are touring their powerful new collection of songs – 'Firewatching' throughout 2017. In Wexford, the duo will be joined for several of their newest songs by the town's own a cappella group, Stagefright, for a unique night of original music at the Arts Centre. Last summer, writer John McKenna began work on a requiem for theatre, in memory of young friends and in honour of those who mourn them. The requiem was inspired, in particular, by Leonard Cohen's hope-filled lines: Behold the gates of mercy, in arbitrary space, and none of us deserving the cruelty or the grace, o solitude of longing where love has been confined, come healing of the body, come healing of the mind. In late October 2016, just two weeks before his death, Leonard approved the final draft of Between Your Love and Mine. Musical director for the requiem is Aisling Carter and it features the voices of Eric Butler, Katie Jacques and Shane Sullivan. The band features Aisling Carter on keyboard, Lucy Deegan on cello, AnnieRose Deegan on violin and David Deay on drums. Spoken word is by Angela Keogh and John McKenna, who also directs the requiem.

50th Strawberry Fair & Street Rhythms 2017 2017 marks the 50th anniversary of the hugelypopular county Wexford Strawberry Fair which has been part and parcel of the social fabric of enniscorthy since 1968. This annual celebration of the strawberry harvest is a time of great fun for all the family and this year’s offering of free outdoor entertainment, craft shows, local and international dance acts, vintage funfair and much more, clearly illustrates the effort put in by the organising committee to make the 50th Fair worthy of all that’s gone before. Visitors to Enniscorthy over the June Bank Holiday weekend will have ample opportunity to visit and sample many of the town’s cultural and culinary delights and of course

enjoy the luscious strawberries and cream on sale throughout the weekend. No effort has been spared in preparing this year’s programme for the Golden Jubilee of the Strawberry Fair and while things may have changed commercially and socially since the first Fair way back in 1968, one thing remains constant – the strawberry is still King in Enniscorthy this time of year. To ensure the continuation of the strawberry king’s reign, the Festival has joined forces with the Enniscorthy Street Rhythms Festival and The Strawberry Roots Festival to bring this year’s exciting programme to fruition. The majority of events are free so we look forward to seeing you all at the Festival over the coming days. n

All Ireland Farmers Market competition in Enniscorthy The 10th All Ireland Farmers Market local artisan food producers’ competition takes place this Sunday 4th June. Since 2008 Enniscorthy has been hosting this very important event! Following the success of the local Enniscorthy weekly Farmers Market since 2004, Enniscorthy Town Council proposed this initiative and with the support of the Co. Wexford Farmers Markets and the IFA, the first All Ireland Farmers Market food producers’ competition was held in 2008, jointly, with the annual Strawberry Festival. The Co.

Wexford Organic Centre was the first winner in 2008. This event is growing in interest, popularity and competitiveness. It’s the national centre and the showcase/platform for local, small, artisan food producers from all over Ireland to come to Enniscorthy and compete for the prestigious award of being the best artisan food producer in the country plus a substantial financial award and the perpetual cup! The importance of this event/competition has not been fully realised, yet. It’s a fantas-

tic opportunity for small food producers around the country to enter and showcase their creations. Enniscorthy Farmers Market alone has many success stories from small beginnings in food production: 1. Killowen Yogurts. 2. O’Neill Foods. 3. Zanna – Owen & Lorna Mullins. 4. Mary O’Hanlon – gluten free range of breads and cakes. 5. Wild About – Fiona Faulkner. 6. Clodagh Davis – cordials. The above mentioned food producers are now supplying

many large retail outlets throughout Ireland. C o . We x f o rd F a r m e r s Markets also encourage and offer schools (transition years) advice and free space to display and sell their project assignments in food and crafts. The weekend of the 3rd and 4th June offers something to all age groups. Co. Wexford Farmers Markets wish the 50th Strawberry Fair every success with its forthcoming event and long may it continue in tandem with the All Ireland Farmers Market food competition. n

On Sunday 14th May I had the pleasure of enjoying Afternoon Tea at the beautifully regal Johnstown Castle. Welcomed on arrival by a most stately doorman in red tail jacket and black top hat complete with cane, we were immediately ushered into the dining hall where we were greeted and shown to our table for two by the window by the lovely Anne Wheeler. Anne, the perfect hostess, originally from Liverpool with a background in heritage and culture, has been working at Johnstown with her husband Matt for many years, firstly as a volunteer and now in a more formal capacity. Anne’s love of the Castle is obvious and she is delighted that her Afternoon Tea event is developing into a major attraction. Although, only its second run, both occasions were completely booked out with long waiting lists. While Anne is thrilled that restoration work is due to commence at the Castle in September, she regrets that the timing may not allow the hosting of another Afternoon Tea in October.

A most stately doorman in red tail jacket and black top hat complete with cane!

After a delicious repas of Earl Grey tea, delicate sandwiches, delectable pastries, moist fruit cake and dainty scones with lashings of luscious cream and mouthwatering raspberry jam served by our lovely maid in Downton Abbey outfit, it was off to the Library to hear some of the history of the Castle. At the Library we were joined by husband and wife team, Peter and Hazel Millar, who enthused about the Castle and all things Johnstown. Peter,

who is a member of the Board of Directors, is an absolute font of information about the Castle and its owners – the Esmondes and the Grogans and also about the Agricultural Museum attached to the Castle, the seed laboratories on its upper floors and the major restoration about t o b e u n de r t a k e n b y t h e Heritage Trust. Both Hazel and Peter are enthused by the project and look forward to what will be achieved over the next few years. Once again their love of the Castle, their passion for its history is blatantly obvious as they recount stories about secret doors, underground tunnels, nineteen Apostles and future plans. Such a lovely couple and so happy to impart their abundant knowledge about this magical edifice to everyone who wants to listen. At €20 per head this is a most wonderful experience in a beautiful space and my compliments to all involved from doorman, to maid, to Anne, Hazel and Peter who make it special for all. – Maria Nolan

Kavanagh's Pharmacy to host the Shed! Mental Health – As part of International Men's health Week which takes place from Monday 12th to Sunday 18th of June, kavanagh's P h a r m a c y, D u ff r y h i l l , Enniscorthy, has invited the Enniscorthy Men's Shed to have a presence in its shop that week. The Shed movement has been recognised by the Haven pharmacy group (of which Kavanagh’s is a member) as an important contributor to men's health and Haven has asked its members nationwide to invite their local shed to set up a presence during Men’s Health Week not just to display their wares, but to talk to men about the benefits of belonging to a shed.

Men can, if they wish, join a shed to learn a new skill such as wood-turning, joinery, painting, art, etc or just go and talk over a cup of tea or coffee. Or just sit and read a newspaper if that's all they feel like doing. The Shed in Enniscorthy meets every Tuesday, Thursday and Friday from 10am until 1pm in the old building in St. John's Hospital. New members are always very welcome so why not call in for a chat. Or ring Chairman, Richie, on 0876691952 or Secretary, Eamonn, on 087-9596119. And make sure to drop into Kavanagh's Pharmacy between 12-17th June to learn about your local Men's Shed. n

commitment needed Fianna Fáil TD for Wexford, James Browne, says the government needs to show a greater commitment to dealing with problems identified in Ireland’s mental health services. Deputy Browne made the comments during a meeting with An Taoiseach Enda Kenny last week. The meeting was arranged to discuss the implementation of the ‘Vision for Change’ policy framework. Deputy Browne said, “I made it known that the current pace of reform simply isn’t good enough and greater commitm e n t i s n e e d e d f ro m Government to ensure we have

a mental health service which is fit for purpose. “I also raised concerns around Wexford’s mental health services directly with An Taoiseach. I highlighted the lack of out of hours services for Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services in the South East. I pointed out that the practice of admitting a child to an adult psychiatric unit, as is the case in University Hospital Waterford, must come to an end. An Taoiseach committed to achieving this. This is something which I will continue to raise with the government until the matter is resolved.” n

Affordable childcare

Civic Reception, 18th May 2017, in Enniscorthy Castle to honour individuals who have been successful in various sports.

Fine Gael TD and Minister with responsibility for Defence, Paul kehoe, is pleased to confirm that extra funding for childcare is now available in Wexford. “From September every child aged between 6-months and 3 years in registered childcare will get some level of support. “The child can be in full or part-time registered childcare. There will be no minimum number of hours and no maximum number of weeks for eligibility. In addition, we are going to lift the cost barrier for those families who need it most. “These targeted supports will be enhanced significantly with the top rate of subsidy available rising from €95 per week to €145 per week and part-time rates will increase to €80 per week. “The extra money will be available for those parents who cannot enter work, training or education because they cannot pay for childcare. They will also be available to those who are working but on lower

incomes and for whom the cost of childcare acts as a major disincentive. “I encourage every family in Wexford to examine their entitlements to make sure they get the full benefit of what’s on offer. “Switching our childcare system from being one of the most expensive in the world to one of the best was never going to be easy. But the countdown for more affordable childcare for Wexford families has now begun. “… childcare centres here in Wexford will receive a letter inviting them to be a registered provider offering state subsidised schemes. This is going to be followed up by a major awareness campaign aimed at families… “Let me assure Wexford families that this will lead to a sea change in how childcare is provided in Ireland. A major awareness campaign aimed at parents and families will be launched nationwide by the end of the month [May].” n

Bizfest is a free networking event aimed at helping Irish companies to develop their networks and expand their business. “Look further, think bigger, be ambitious” is the theme of this year’s event which takes place on the 21st of June at the national Opera house, Wexford. Now in its 4th year, Bizfest 2017 will be hosted by Local Enterprise Offices from the southeast region and Enterprise Ireland. Bizfest has 3 elements; a networking lunch, an exhibition area which introduces attendees to services which may benefit their business, and a panel event featuring unique business people who have experience on the local, national and international stage. This year’s panel includes Julie Sinnamon, CEO of Enterprise Ireland, Patsy Carney, CEO of Eirgen, Jim Hughes, CEO of Innovate, and Paul Jacob, owner of Smart Storage. Large turnout for Brexit meeting Almost two hundred people from all walks of life gathered in the riverside Park hotel for the Fine Gael public meeting on Brexit on 8th May. Speaking after the meeting, Minister Kehoe stated: “I was delighted with the level of interest shown by the people of Wexford as this was an important opportunity to hear their concerns and to be able to lay out for them the Government’s plans. The keynote speaker for the meeting was Minister for Social Protection, Leo Varadkar TD, who provided the crowd with a detailed overview of the approach being taken by the Irish Government, highlighting the key negotiating priorities, the main risks and the successes to date.

Rowena Dwyer, Chief Economist, IFA, demonstrated the extensive preparation that has been undertaken by her organisation identifying the risks and in working with the government to put in place plans for the industry. Neil Hughes, Baker Tilly Hughes Blake, provided some very sound advice for businesses – “Don’t panic, be flexible, prepare to diversify” as a means for surviving and indeed thriving as Brexit unfolds. Karl Fitzpatrick, Wexford Chamber of Commerce, highlighted a number of opportunities that may open up, such as the possibility of enticing foreign students from the UK to Irish universities. Verona Murphy, President, Irish Road Haulage Association, outlined some of the impact a

hard border would have on the haulage industry and the knock-on effects that this would have on all goods and services across the country. The final speaker of the night, Nicholas Dunne of Killowen Farm, detailed how his business has already evaluated the risks being posed by Brexit and the steps that he is taking to seek out new markets and develop his business. Summing up the meting Minister Kehoe said: “I believe the key to surviving Brexit will be preparation and planning and we are extremely lucky to have such pro-active, positive and forward-thinking organisations throughout the country representing the various sectors and working together to seek the best possible outcome for Ireland.” n

Sam sells majority shareholding Private equity fund Carlyle Cardinal Ireland (CCI) has been an active investor in the Irish market over the last three years and is now investing in independent retail pharmacy group Sam McCauley Chemists. The companies have not disclosed the size of the investment but the deal is estimated

to be worth more than €50 million and is for a majority stake in the business. It is understood that Sam McCauley will still be a significant shareholder in the company and will remain on its board of directors. Having joined his father’s business in 1978, Sam McCauley transformed it from a single chemist shop in

Enniscorthy to the third largest retail pharmacy group in Ireland. The group now has 30 stores, almost 600 employees nationwide and a reported turnover of €75m in 2015. Sam McCauley said the investment from CCI allows the group to continue growing and innovating for the benefit of its customers and staff. n

Enniscorthy company wins European award and plans further expansion InDOS Financial, the independent AIFMD depositary with offices in Enniscorthy and London, has been named Best Depositary for the second consecutive year at the 2017 hedge Fund Managers (hFM) European Services Awards. INDOS won the award in recognition of its continued innovation as an independent depositary, exceptional client focussed service delivery and impressive client growth over the past 12 months. INDOS Financial was started by Bill Prew in 2014, and its sole office in Ireland is located in Templeshannon,

Enniscorthy. Since beginning operations in 2014 it has experienced rapid expansion from an initial three employees to a current workforce of twelve; further expansion is underway, with INDOS recently announcing plans to extend the team in Enniscorthy to fifteen before the end of 2017. The company currently has in excess of $14 billion dollars under depositary, with services provided to 70 hedge funds across 56 different managers. Bill Prew, CEO of INDOS Financial, said: “We are thrilled that INDOS has once again been recognised as the leading

depositary servicing the hedge fund industry. As the only specialist independent depositary in the market, the award recognises the inherent benefits of an independent solution that delivers value to investors, fund boards and managers. We would like to thank all our clients that supported our application and our entire team for their incredibly hard work over the past year – indeed this award is a testament to the standard of our team, which is drawn from the strong financial services workforce in Ireland’s south east region. We hope to use

this talent pool to add further high calibre staff over the coming months.” The firm has also recently received approval from the Financial Conduct Authority in London to extend its Alternative Investment Fund Managers Directive (AIFMD) depositary permissions to provide full depositary services to investment managers. This move represents the first time a non-bank entity in the UK/Ireland has been given these permissions, and positions the company to continue its impressive growth over the coming years. n

IMPROVING LINKS BETWEEN SAVANNAH AND ENNISCORTHY Is your name kehoe, Corish, rossiter, Stafford or Murphy? If so you may have a particular interest in an event taking place in The Athenaeum hall on Thursday, June 8th. Students from Georgia Southern university (GSu) Savannah, the oldest city in the State of Georgia, are visiting Enniscorthy to further explore the Wexford-Savannah Axis, an innovative research and heritage outreach project that reveals, analyses and celebrates the historic links between County Wexford and the City of Savannah on the Georgia Coast. Each year, Savannah hosts over 14 million tourists – an

astonishing number. The majority of them are driven by heritage and history. Thanks to the WEX-SAV (or WexfordSavannah Axis) project at GSU, they are now enjoying, via their mobile phones, a carefully researched, image-rich tourist experience whose focus is on how hundreds of Wexford immigrants changed the face and culture of Savannah beginning around 1850. Savannah became one of the most Irish cities in the United States with Wexfordborn natives dominating the immigrant neighbourhoods. Many well-known Wexford family names associated with the county abound in Savannah

and it could be argued with considerable conviction that Savannah is Wexford’s home city in the U.S. The visiting GSU students, who will spend upwards of 10 days in this county doing further research, will attend a public meeting in The Athenaeum Hall on Thursday night, June 8th, and there will tell how a m a n f ro m j u s t n o r t h o f Enniscorthy developed in Savannah the largest iron foundry in the South Eastern United States. The attendance will also hear how the memory of Daniel O’Connell’s speech at a meeting in Enniscorthy travelled to Savannah with the Wexford emigrants and how

Wexford natives preserved the spirit of 1798 – Vinegar Hill, Oulart Hill and more – all across the city. The students will use images, spoken-word pieces, music and song and other means to convey these exciting stories, which reflect how, during the 1850s, it was possible to sail on Wexford vessels non-stop from the Model County to Savannah. They will, in addition, have lists of names of Wexford people who settled in Savannah and they will seek the help of their Enniscorthy audience with identifying these people and, hopefully, with putting a backstory to the names.

The GSU Course/Trip Coordinator is Howard Keeley of the University staff and he is most anxious that the planned Enniscorthy event is an interactive one involving his students and members of the audience. He is inviting attendees to bring and share information they may have about relatives who emigrated to Savannah between 1798 and 1850. Mr. Keeley is anxious to hear from people/individuals who may have information about the Repeal, the Temperance movement and Tenant Rights movements in and around Enniscorthy during that period. Information is

also being sought on two businessmen – James Deveraux and TN Sinnott, believed to have been merchants in the town, to whom emigrants applied for passage to Savannah. The planned Enniscorthy meeting is open to all members of the public and admission is free of charge. Because of the historical connections b e t w e e n We x f o rd a n d Savannah, it is hoped the event will be attended by a representative cross-section of the local community in what must surely be an ideal opportunity to further links between County Wexford and the US city of Savannah. n

Earth 2 Heaven

Joe Kavanagh looks at your pet’s summer diet. We are passionate about dogs and have been working with them for many years. Ensuring the dogs in our care are happy and safe is our main priority.

With the weather over the last few weeks we've got an early taste of summer. Hot sunny days and balmy evenings bring a sense of holiday mode. The secondary schools are winding down except for the Junior and Leaving Cert students, and we wish them well in their exams. With the warm weather we see different cases presenting with various types of skin conditions. These will vary from flea bite allergies, to what we term moist excema, or hot spots. The old adage that 'you are what you eat' or the French version is 'we dig our graves with our teeth'... slightly more ominous!... but the point is also true of the animals. With summer comes salad days. We eat less. The same should be true for our pets. Invariably though we feed them the same amount as always and just to be polite.... they eat it all. Unfortunately though because they don't need to be eating this amount it isn't metabolised properly and so it invariably leads to problems. The one we see most often, that is directly linked to diet, is these 'hot spots'. Patches of skin that break out in oozing sores or crusty caked skin that's painful and sore. They usually need a course of antibiotics to clear it up and special washes for their coat but the underlying issue is to reduce the level of protein in their diet. In the warm weather, just like ourselves, they don't need the same dietary requirements so less is more! Giving them a good probiotic in their food also is a big help and essential in my opinion especially after any course of medication, antibiotics or long-term heart, epileptic medication, etc.

A local contributor looks at life today in Enniscorthy and beyond Varadkar Vs coVeney Will the outcome of the Varadkar vs Coveney contest within Fine Gael have any impact on us ordinary mortals? I doubt it. Both have been members of the last and present governments and have fully supported all the policies of those governments. Therefore, regardless of which of these elite personalities take command, our lives will be no different. However, the outcome could easily make a big difference to Paul Kehoe and Michael D’Arcy. Currently Kehoe is the senior Fine Gael man in the county and is supporting Leo Varadkar so one would assume that in the now likely event of Varadkar winning, Paul’s position would be safe. Not so actually. The fly in the ointment for Paul is that Michael D’Arcy is also a fervent supporter of the bould Leo and you can be sure he will be expecting some little perk in return. When the new Taoiseach takes over one of his first actions will be to form a cabinet followed a week or so later by the appointment of

ministers of state. Wexford constituency will not get a senior minister, that’s for sure, but Fine Gael in the county will expect a junior minister. Therein is the problem for Leo and Fine Gael. There will be civil war in the party in Co. Wexford if any attempt is made to remove Kehoe to favour D’Arcy. Likewise, the omission of D’Arcy in favour of Kehoe will cause uproar in the Gorey Fine Gael area. Both cannot be accommodated as Wexford will not get two junior ministers. Too many other supporters of Varadkar will have to be shovelled into junior ministerial positions to keep them happy and this will limit Wexford’s quota. So exciting times ahead in this area. Incidentally in the unlikely event that Coveney wins the problem will not arise. Neither will get anything. Speed VanS We all see the speed vans parked around our main roads. They do an essential job in at least trying to control speed and encourage sensible driving. Something which

Pic: ©Joseph Doyle

View from the Hill puzzles me with regard to their locations is the placing of the vans barely within an urban speed zone where drivers can be picked off for doing a few kilometres per hour over the limit. In these areas one has to be forgiven for thinking that the vans are revenue raisers rather than speed controllers. In my humble opinion the secondary county roads should get more attention than they do. Some drivers use these roads as if they were racing tracks and seem to think that not only does a speed limit not exist but that

Another terrible habit some drivers have is to drive while drinking hot coffee or tea. This practice is dangerous and indeed deadly. Can you imagine a driver, with a carton of hot beverage, being faced with an emergency stop or having to take a sudden evasive action while trying to protect themselves from being scalded. Is it not time that these people copped themselves on?

they have the god-given right to speed in the middle of the road rather than on the left hand side. This is where the speed vans should be located from time to time. Even the possibility of such speed traps will have a direct positive effect. Hopefully this can be looked at.

St. Senan’S The proposed development of St. Senan’s as a centre of education is to be welcomed. If this comes to pass the entire county and indeed other parts of the south east will benefit. Hopefully the efforts of those behind the proposed project will be successful and will get the support of all politicans and statutory bodies in the county.

and on driVing… It is shocking to see how many people still use hand-held mobile phones. People totally disregard the current law in this regard and unfortunately seem to get away with it.

public SerVice card There seems to be a resistance from some sources to the push by the government to persuade us all to obtain a public service card. These c a rd s a re i s s u e d b y t h e

Department of Social Protection. The reality is that to have such a card is more of an advantage than disadvantage. The card is very helpful if a person needs to show identification for any reason whatever. It is difficult to see what drawback there is in having one. It may be suggested that our activities and movements can be monitored because of our possession of such a card. This is probably somewhat farfetched. At the end of the day, card or not, if any one in authority such as a garda or other state official requires you to identify yourself you must do so, card or not. If applying for a passport or other service we must identify ourselves anyway. I would accept that it would be wrong to impose an obligation to carry such a card at all times. The card should be discretionary but the convenience of having the card certainly outweighs not having one. n We are often asked: Who is the “View from the Hill” columnist? All we can say is that the author’s surname is NOT Doyle!

Antisocial Behaviour Gorey Cllr. Malcolm Byrne has accused Wexford County Council of failing to properly deal with Council tenants or residents in estates who engage in antisocial behaviour. He was responding to the frontpage story in the Irish Examiner of 15th May which showed that in 2015 and 2016, Wexford Co. Council received 563 complaints of antisocial behaviour – the highest number of any Council outside of Dublin. Malcolm said, "I have been raising the problem of the small minority of Council tenants who cause hell for their neighbours for a number of years and the fact that Wexford County Council continues to adopt a softly, softly approach with these tenants." "The vast majority of Council tenants work hard, keep their houses well and contribute to the community yet there seems to be a reluctance to deal effectively with troublemakers." Malcolm points out that it is not just Council tenants where complaints are received. “There are sometimes renters who cause havoc and the Council does not have either the power nor the will to take tough action. For example… the case of an individual who has allowed dozens of bags of rubbish to be built up in her front garden. This is a health and environment hazard. Rather than take a prosecution, the Council arranged to have the rubbish taken away not once but twice! This is completely unfair for that person's neighbours." n

Minister Kehoe said: “This local investment is part of an overall allocation of €47million for vital school projects around the country. “Works will be carried out in schools in Wexford over the summer months, so the dis-

ruption to students, teachers and other school staff will be kept to a minimum. “I am confident that school authorities here in Wexford will be able to achieve best value for money on prices for jobs, and I call on schools to ensure that they maximise the benefit to their schools of the works sanctioned by my Fine Gael colleague, Education Minister Richard Bruton. “The Action Plan for Education, which aims to make the Irish education and training

service the best in Europe within a decade, puts a big priority on investment in school educational infrastructure. “This announcement confirms the Government’s continuing prioritisation of capital funding for school buildings here in Wexford which will enhance the learning and working environment for pupils and teachers.” “ T h e S u m m e r Wo r k s Scheme is designed to allow schools to carry out small and medium scale building works that will improve and upgrade existing school buildings. “Some 438 schools at both primary and secondary level around the country will receive €47 million for vital school improvements through the scheme. “This year, almost €500 million will be invested in school building infrastructure under the school building and modernisation programme.” n

Caroline gets motoring

MINI CouNTryMaN review by Caroline Kidd

the Mini countryman was launched back in 2010 as a ‘big’ Mini with the style of a crossover. the idea was to package the fun of a Mini in a larger and more versatile shape, with SuV-inspired styling. Seven years on and MINI Countryman Mark 2 has arrived in Ireland. It’s the biggest MINI yet, having expanded in length and width. Visually the new Countryman looks leaner and more purposeful than before. MINI’s extensive menu of customisation options is of course a feature. Inside, the Countryman is probably not like any other crossover you’ve sat in before. It’s a bit like stepping into a nightclub: glossy surfaces, coloured lights and cheesy graphics. But I think this is the MINI way of doing things so you will like it or loathe it. The quality of the interior is all very good, and even the seat fabric looks like it could belong to an expensive sofa. Infotainment is provided via the ‘MINI Visual Boost Radio’ with 6.5” colour display and con-

MINI Countryman

trolled by a rotary controller on the centre console. New MINI Countryman is roomier inside than the outgoing model. The wheelbase has been extended and there is now an extra 5 centimetres of legroom. The boot volume is up to 450 litres. Petrol and diesel engines are available. The MINI Cooper Countryman has a 1.5-litre three

cylinder petrol engine with 136hp, while the MINI Cooper D Countryman with a 2.0-litre 150hp diesel engine is the best for economy returning up to 64mpg with emissions of 113g/km. There are two more performance based models: the Cooper SD (190hp) and the Cooper S (192hp). Manual and automatic gearboxes are available, as well as the option of

MINI’s ‘ALL4’ all wheel drive system. On the road the Countryman is remarkably good fun for a tall, slightly overweight MINI crossover. There is loads of grip and it feels glued to the road at all times. The steering has a weighty and elastic feel that adds to the thrills behind the wheel. It’s a sporty car but there is little compromise in terms of com-

every month bunclody native caroline kidd brings you the best from the world of motoring, including car reviews, news and more. caroline is a member of the irish Motoring Writers’ association (iMWa) and a jury member for irish car of the year. you can follow her blog changing lanes at www.changinglanes.ie. fort, and it’s refined too for long haul trips on the motorway. But thankfully not so wellinsulated as to drown out the delightful noise of the 192hp 2.0litre turbo petrol powering the Cooper S model I drove. It burbles into life when you press the ignition switch and then rumbles thereafter not too dissimilar to a V8 (!) at low speeds around town. It’s quite disarming coming from a family car. It’s also very quick and very responsive, with 0100kmh achieved in 7.2 seconds on the MINI Cooper S Countryman ALL4 with 8-speed Steptronic transmission. It’s an absolute delight to drive but this model in particular is expensive and more niche. While the Countryman range starts at €33,580, the Cooper S Countryman comes in at a hefty €38,850 or €43,400 with four wheel drive. Standard equipment includes 16-inch alloy wheels, rear parking sensors, MINI Connected, sat nav and Bluetooth connectivity on Cooper and Cooper D mod-

els. MINI Cooper S and Cooper SD Countryman models add 17inch alloy wheels and cloth/leather upholstery. With pricing starting from €33,580, the Countryman is firmly in the ‘small, premium crossover’ set with new competitors like the Audi Q2. The entry Cooper and Cooper D make most sense for the Irish market in terms of pricing and running costs. MINIs have always been very desirable and why you will pay for the privilege, this is probably one of the most fun family cars out there. The new MINI Countryman is an improvement all round on the previous model and feels like it has finally grown into its crossover skin. Model tested: MINI Cooper S Countryman ALL4 Auto Price: €43,400 (€53,602 as tested) Engine: 2.0-litre turbo petrol Power: 192hp 0-100km/h: 7.2 seconds Economy: 39mpg CO2 emissions: 159g/km Motor tax: €570 per year n

Past, Present & Future at Enniscorthy Castle

Pic: Maria Nolan

L-R: Cllr oliver Walsh (Chairman, enniscorthy Municipal District), Liz Hore (Manager, enniscorthy Municipal District), Scott foster (United Nations economic Commission for europe), Cllr Paddy Kavanagh (Chairman, Wexford Co. Council) and tom enright (Ceo, Wexford Co. Council)

past, present and future all came together recently at enniscorthy castle as members of enniscorthy Historical re-enactment Society, depicting aspects of the towns history, formed the welcoming party for an international delegation of world leaders in sustainable energy who were in town to discuss the possibility of locating ireland’s first passive House training centre of excellence at enniscorthy.

The delegation, led by Scott Foster of the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe, were well impressed with both the welcome and the hospitality encountered in the town and were completely blown away with our beautiful Castle as a venue for the Welcome Reception hosted jointly by Enniscorthy Municipal District Council and Enniscorthy Chamber of Commerce. Town Manager, Liz Hore, called on speakers, Oliver Walsh

and John Burke O’Leary, who both expressed their delight that Enniscorthy is being considered as a possible site for this exciting venture and both were lavish in their praise of Michael Bennett and his passive housing project at the Moyne, already viewed earlier in the day by the delegation. Scott Foster said that he and his team of experts had been treated royally since arriving in Wexford but the reception in an Irish Castle

surrounded by Pikemen and Volunteers was unexpected, exceptional and unique. He said that Enniscorthy would be his choice of location for the pilot project being streets ahead already of most of Europe, and her people and politicians so enthused and eager to make it all happen. Presentations were made of mementos of Enniscorthy to the visitors by both the Chamber and the Council and after the reception they were all

invited to take a tour of the Castle with Rory O’Connor. Most of the delegation having either some Irish blood in them or married to those that do, were thrilled with the opportunity to view the Castle and learn a little of her history. Well done to everyone involved with presenting the town in its best possible light to our visitors and let’s all keep our collective fingers crossed for a favourable decision. – Maria Nolan

Wexford County Council is committed to providing affordable, ‘nearly Zero energy Buildings’ (nZeB) houses and the first such scheme is in enniscorthy and the first tenants moved in just a couple of weeks ago. the passive houses were designed and constructed by local building company, Michael Bennett & Sons, and were certified by Mosart/ Passive House academy. –––––––––––––––––– Right: alan Lambert, Denise Redmond and Jack Redmond are delighted with their passive home.

Wexford Supporters at Open Night in Ferns Wexford Senior Hurlers and Footballers were at the Halo tiles centre of excellence at Ferns on Wednesday evening 3rd May for a prechampionship Meet & greet, providing their fans, the young and the not so young, with a wonderful opportunity to be up close and personal with their heroes. As the golden summer sun shone on the Centre of

Excellence our county players, and managers, Davy and Banty as they are now known the length and breadth of Wexford, mingled and mixed, laughed and chatted and smiled and posed for a multiplicity of photographs as snap-happy mams and dads, grannies and grandads captured the special moments. Chairman Des Croke and members of the Wexford

Supporters Club along with County Chairman Derek Kent were on hand to launch their forthcoming Race Night Fundraiser at Enniscorthy Dog Track on Thursday July 6th, encouraging all to participate in this annual fun event which has become a major source of funding for the Supporters Club and Wexford GAA with all proceeds going towards the fur-

ther development and enhancement of all our Wexford teams. Yet another excellent idea from Wexford GAA and a truly wonderful occasion for the fans, giving the young hopefuls of the future easy access to our county players can only be good and we are fortunate to have such impressive role models for our youth to emulate and admire.

Despite the increasing evening chill, the players stayed on the Ferns fields and continued to smile and chat and sign and encourage the next generation of Wexford GAA. Nothing was too much bother to them or indeed to Davy Fitzgerald who was surrounded by youngsters for the duration. None of them showed the slightest signs of fatigue or tedium but rather

made each and every fan feel unique and special. A most memorable evening thanks to these marvellous young men who are exceptional ambassadors for Wexford GAA both on and off the field and need to be acknowledged and commended for all that they do for us – the purple and gold cavalcade. – Maria Nolan

enniscorthy town Manager, liz Hore, was on hand at the athenaeum on Sunday 21st May to present the first ever literary Shop Window display award to winners kilcannon who created a stunning alice in Wonderland design. In an effort to create awareness of the Festival and involve the whole town, the committee decided to introduce a L i t e r a r y S h o p Wi n d o w Competition asking the Enniscorthy business community to create a window display inspired by their favourite

book, play or poem. And Liz Hore said the windows created were imaginative, beautiful and fun and gave a vintage feel to the town for the Festival. John Kelly said that the standard of the anthony cronin poetry award was exceptional with approximately 184 entries from all around the world and he called on special guest, Bibi Baskin, to present certificates and trophies to the winners. 1st "Allegheny Man" Joe Neal. 2nd "Inside the Wall" Aaron Corless. 3rd "To Lady and to Tramp" Grainne Daly.

Adele O’Neill said that the entries for the colm toibin Short Story award definitely had an international appeal with stories coming from Israel, Canada, America, Belguim, Germany, the UK and all over Ireland and the quality of the submissions was so good that we would be looking to publish at least the shortlisted in an anthology later in the year. The Colm Toibin Short Story Award was won by Sally Jubb with Horses, second place went to Rose Stevens for Variable Stars – both ladies are from the

UK and weren’t able to make it but 3rd prize winner, Helen Lahert, for Aliens Like Myself, was on hand to accept her prize from Bibi Baskin along with the rest of the shortlisted including Lorcan Byrne, Pamela Hobbs for Time Heals, Tricia Hagan for Bitter Truth, Robert Barrett for The Handshake Men, Anne O’Leary for A Simple Loss of Balance, Niamh MacCabe for To Memorise a Skylark and The Sniper by Michelle Coyne. Wexford Literary Festival has truly gone global. – Maria Nolan

Heritage grants Minister paul kehoe td has welcomed the announcement of €120,000 of investment for 14 heritage projects across co. Wexford. the funding is coming as part of a €4.8 million investment package under the built Heritage investment Scheme and Structures at risk Fund for 2017. the funding will allow for the conservation and repair of protected structures across the country. The €4.8 million investment will further leverage more than €11 million in private sector funds and will stimulate labourintensive projects nationwide. Welcoming the funding, Minister Kehoe stated, “Ireland's heritage buildings and protected structures are a vital part of the infrastructure of our villages, towns, and cities including our national economy. The economic recovery is allowing for increased investment in our heritage assets. As the success of the 2016 schemes illustrates, investing in our built heritage is not just good for the individual properties

concerned, but can also provide a real boost to job creation in the construction, conservation and tourism sectors. Investing in our heritage will also play a very important role in rural regeneration, which is a priority area for this Government. A wide range of properties will benefit, including residential homes, townhouses, railway stations, churches, country houses and other listed buildings.” Concluding the Minister added, “I would like to acknowledge the contribution of the local authorities in embracing these schemes which will have a positive impact on protected structures in every local authority area across the country. I am also delighted by the response of private owners and their willingness to release substantial private matching funds and invest in our built heritage.” Typical works to be funded under the scheme include roof repairs, structural consolidation and measures to ensure weather tightness. n
