FUll BIKE REPAIR SERvICE & BIKE 2 WORK AGENT Enniscorthy Credit Union Ltd has moved to dispel persistent rumours that it is interested in purchasing the vacant Dunne’s Stores premises on Rafter Street, Enniscorthy. In a joint statement issued by Board of Directors Chairman, Pat O’Shea, and Credit Union Manager, Liz Cullen, they have acknowledged that the Credit Union did commission a feasibility study in an effort to determine the suitability of the Rafter Street property. The findings of that study, however, have shown it is ‘unsuitable’ and as a result the Credit Union says
it is no longer interested in its purchase. Its present main office on Abbey Square was officially opened in 1995 and continues to serve the needs of its 30,000 plus members but, because of a lack of parking facilities and expansion opportunities to further extend its present office complex, the Board of Directors of the Credit Union are looking at all credible options going forward as it seeks to meet its ever expanding role in Enniscorthy town and district. Meanwhile the wait for a buyer for the old Dunne’s premises continues. n

comment The 50th Strawberry Fair & Street Rhythms Festival which ran from 2nd to 5th June was a huge success. Our congratulations to the voluntary organisers on a job well done and we look forward to many more years of this historic Enniscorthy festival. Unfortunately, it was not a case of good news for some of our media colleagues as the High Court last week appointed a provisional liquidator to Wexford Echo Limited – the publisher of the Wexford Echo, Gorey Echo, New Ross Echo and the Enniscorthy Echo. The company is insolvent and unable to pay its debts. Counsel for the company said it has been making losses and as at the end of May 2017 had net liabilities of €834,000. The court was told the provisional liquidator, Kieran Wallace, an insolvency practitioner with KPMG, will keep the Wexford Echo, Gorey Newly crowned 2017 Strawberry Queen, Echo, New Ross Echo and the Enniscorthy Echo Megan O’Shea, open in the hope that a buyer for the titles can will be a great be found. If successful, we sincerely hope as ambassador for many as possible of the 30 people employed Enniscorthy in the there will retain their jobs. year ahead. Pic: Maria Nolan. – Frank Corcoran

Cyberbullying –
FERNS COMPUTER SERVICES
Prevention is always better than Cure Cyberbullying is an act most of us are familiar with. knowing what it is, who is involved, and its harmful effects to targets are easy enough to identify. what most of us may not realise is that many incidents of cyberbullying can be prevented. here’s a few ways to tackle them: • Never share your online credentials with anyone, not even with family members (except your parents if they ask for them), or friends. Most kids and teens these days allow their friends to access their social profiles, believing that doing so is cool. However, friends may begin posting images and messages without their consent, and may cause more headache to the innocent child or teen who owns the profile. • Never share private or intimate photos of yourself to anyone. Teen girls may gain Likes from peers, but they may also grab the unwanted attention of strangers, which may lead to stalking and other forms of online harassment. • Consider limiting the number of people seeing what you post online. Sadly, most users of social networking sites don’t bother setting up the privacy level of their profiles and posts. As most (if not all) social sites show posts publicly by default, those who express their views on, say, politics usually invite ire from strangers who don’t share similar views. • Mind what you disclose online. Kids and teens share quite a lot about themselves—their thoughts, opinions, feelings, activities at home or with friends. Although these are likely innocent, they can be used to fuel the bullying. • Create strong passwords for all online accounts. Some cyberbullies may attempt to infiltrate a target’s account by hacking. Although this act is not considered cyberbullying, online bullies can use accounts they control to humiliate a target or harass other targets by posing as someone else. Make sure that you can efficiently manage the passwords you create. Ferns Computer Services has been in business in Ferns since May 2007. Established by David Pohludek, it has a huge clientele base all over Co. Wexford and beyond.

24/7 Cardiac Care for South East is a must - Mythen the recent sad death of mr thomas power has brought home the indispensable necessity for a 24/7 cardiac unit in University hospital waterford according to local Sinn fein Councillor Johnny mythen. “The Government are basing their policy decisions on the Herity report,” Cllr Mythen said, “This report dismisses the need for a second Cath Lab for the South East, stating “patients arriving to the Emergency Department at U.H.W. should be considered as being within
a 90 minute drive time of Cork University Hospital and so should be transferred there for Primary PCI without delay irrespective of the time, day or night." “Cardiologist experts have stated that a 90 minute timescale is the critical period before permanent heart damage or possible death occurs. These vitally important minutes are at the very ‘heart of the matter’. In reality the 90 minutes, when broken down in real emergency terms, is where I feel Mr Herity's report
Local Sinn Fein Councillor, Johnny Mythen (centre), collecting signatures on a petition for 24/7 Cardiac Care for the South East .
fails and the Government should take stock,” says Cllr Mythen. “Breaking down the 90 minute barrier, into units of actual time, reveals the obvious shortcomings. For example, from the moment a person has a heart attack the clock is running. Firstly, contact with an operator has to take place, followed then by the dispatching of the ambulance crew. Secondly, the time the ambulance actually arrives (usually negotiating roadworks or heavy traffic) and, thirdly, the return journey back to the hospital. Finally, we must account for the time it takes for the patient to be diagnosed and treated.” “A 24/7 Cardiac Unit is paramount for the South East. The nearer you are to the source of treatment the better your chances of survival are. An emergency heart attack is always a race against time.” “No one should be allowed to play Russian roulette with our lives or play God for that matter. Closing the Cardiac Unit after 5pm puts citizens in the South East at a clear and present disadvantage and decreases their time for vital medical intervention.” n

The event of the season in Enniscorthy the summer event of the season is the only way to describe the golden Strawberry ball held on wednesday 31st may at the Riverside park hotel, as the fashion-conscious and funloving people of Enniscorthy and beyond came out in both numbers and style to show their support for one of the longest-running festivals in the country. Such was the popularity of this year’s 50th Anniversary Ball, suffice it to say that the demand for tickets was only marginally surpassed by the demand for tickets for the
Wexford/Kilkenny encounter which took pllace on June 10th, and the Riverside ballroom was packed to capacity. The Ball dress code was nothing short of red carpet with absolutely fabulous creations on display for the prestigious event. As guests, Princesses and former Queens mixed and mingled at the PreBall Champagne & Strawberries Reception, the Riverside foyer became a magical garden of splendidly fluttering butterflies of every colour, pattern and hue. Long, longer, short and shorter – a stunning ensem-
ble of floral, embossed, sequined and plain gowns sashayed and swirled with elegance and design and all were beautiful. The Riverside repas of beef or salmon was of the usual excellent standard, preceded by soup or smoked chicken salad and followed by scrumptious strawberry desserts. The speeches by Cyril Wheelock, Chairman of Strawberry Fair, Oliver Walsh, Chairman of Enniscorthy Municipal District Council, Minister Paul Kehoe and Town Manager Liz Hore were apt, well delivered and concise and
the entertainment by Wrecking Ball was top drawer. Indeed, a Golden Anniversary celebration to be remembered, MC’d by maestro Jimmy Gahan, it was a wonderful Enniscorthy showcase of fantastic food, excellent entertainment, and stunning style. A special opportunity that will come our way but once and full credit to the Strawberry Fair & Street Rhythms committee for making it possible and for giving us all a golden memory of Enniscorthy and the Strawberry Fair. – Maria Nolan

Keeping the flag flying at Vinegar Hill the 21st June has many connotations and means many things to many people – from the summer solstice or equinox, to midsummer’s night, to the longest day, but for the people of wexford and particularly those from Enniscorthy it is the anniversary of the battle of Vinegar hill when 20,000 poorly equipped United Irish Rebels faced up to the 18,000-strong professional soldiers of the british Crown. 2017 is the 219th Anniversary of the fateful battle and Enniscorthy Castle and Enniscorthy Municipal District Council came together last month with Enniscorthy Historical Re-enactment Society to commemorate and remember the historic occasion with a dignified, inclusive and solemn ceremony on the Hill. In sultry, summer-evening sunshine, those gathered heard Rory O’Connor of Enniscorthy Castle give a concise account of the event where over 1,200 rebels lost their lives in the
cause of Irish freedom, followed by a beautiful rendition of Seamus Heaney’s emotive poem, Requiem for the Croppies, delivered eloquently by Seán Óg Doyle. Rev. David Conkey of the P re s b y t e r i a n C h u rc h , Enniscorthy, spoke of forgiveness and reconciliation as he prayed for all who lost their lives 219 years ago. Wreaths were laid by Chairman of Enniscorthy District Council, Keith Doyle, and Matthew Murphy of the Enniscorthy re-enactment group and re-enactor, Tim Corrigan, brought the odd tear to the eye with his poignant version of Boolavogue and, in conclusion, local poet John Kelly gave the hillside crowd his own poem specially commissioned for the occasion, The Boy from Monaseed, in memory, John explained, of John Sheehan who fought and died on June 21st 1798 on Vinegar Hill under Myles Byrne. A beautiful and moving tribute to the young rebel. – Maria Nolan

Twas here he bled, his last drop, seeped through cloth, ran down stem and foot, to root, forever here his death bed, no mother or any other soft hand to comfort or dead body ever cover -twas here he bled And here he lies under every sinking sun and bright rising moon this boy from Monaseed has died, don’t hesitate or fear to speak of blood and bone from lad and dream that lays beneath -tis here he lies. n

The Savannah Group at Enniscorthy Castle. Pic: Maria Nolan.
Wexford’s American City wexford’s american City – that is how a group of young students and their professors from georgia University described their hometown of Savannah at a function in their honour at Enniscorthy Castle and athenaeum on thursday evening 8th June. The group of twelve were here in Wexford, and particularly Enniscorthy, as part of the WexSav Axis to establish the links between our two parts of the world. As Professor Howard Kealy put it, ‘As in the song Boolavogue – the green flag floated from shore to shore. Well the green flag floated from the Wexford shore to the Savannah one and is still flying high there today.’ The 1860 Savannah census shows one in every four of Savannah’s citizens as Irish and no county was better represented than Wexford. All due to one William Kehoe who went from the Monamolin area and ended up owning his own iron foundry employing mostly Irish immigrants and in par-

ticular Wexford ones, and these visiting students with names like Daly, Brennan, Rossiter, Devereux, Sinnott, Corish, Stafford and more are here researching the family connections between our neighbouring worlds. T h e We x S a v A x i s Committee – Maree Lyng, Richie Cotter, Jimmy Gahan and Cathy Keane had a full-on programme of events for the visitors beginning with a parade from Market Square to the Castle led by Piper Liam Doyle and Enniscorthy Historical Reenactment Society. At the Castle the re-enactors formed a guard of honour for the group to enter, where they enjoyed a delicious meal catered by The Holy Grail and were presented with gifts b y Vi c e - C h a i r m a n o f Enniscorthy Municipal District Council, Keith Doyle, and Town Manager, Liz Hore. From there it was on to the A t h e n a e u m w h e re t h e Carrigbyrne Pike Choir, who have visited Savannah in both 2010 and 2012, beautifully per-
formed Carrigfergus, Danny Boy and Poor Wayfaring Stranger before being joined by the Savannah group for an emotional and rousing rendition of Boolavogue. The eloquent Jimmy Gahan then introduced local historian, Aidan Ryan, who said that he wouldn’t speak about his favourite subjects Eileen Gray and Pugin, but rather gave a most informative account of the Norman Invasion of Wexford and the Cromwellian Plantation. Unfortunately, Aidan said, most of our records have either been destroyed intentionally or accidentally making it difficult for the students’ research but there were people in the audience like the Rath sisters who would be most willing to assist in any way they could. The Savannah students then made a superb presentation on Savannah and its Wexford connection, informing the audience that William Kehoe’s Iron Foundry site is about to be transformed into a
stadium for concerts, seminars and conferences keeping with the Wexford story in Savannah, and his home is about to be opened to the public as it was when he lived there. According to the students, Savannah is driven by heritage tourism with fourteen million tourists visiting per annum – so that is fourteen million hearing about the Wexford story – how bad can that be for us here. The lovely evening ended with Professor Howard Kealy saying that Savannah is a beautiful and welcoming city and now he knows how that came to be because he says Wexford is a beautiful and welcoming county. Jimmy Gahan replied that the door of Wexford friendship will always be open to Savannah and called on local singer Niall Wall to close proceedings with the fabulous Cuchulainn’s Son. What a truly wonderful project and who knows what amazing things it may bring to all our futures. – Maria Nolan

Three roads have already been closed at Rockspring, Monart, and Killaligan, in order
to construct new bridges and more road diversions are due to be in place in the next months. Interceptor drainage, silt fencing and siltation ponds/settlement lagoons have been installed along the scheme to mitigate the effect of the works on the surface water network. www.slaneynews.com In addition to trying new sporting and other activities, summer camps provide children with a wonderful opportunity to develop important life skills that can be difficult to achieve in other environments. So here are just a few of the many benefits your children can gain in summer camps. 1. Summer campers can obtain the life skills needed to become successful adults. Some of the skills necessary to become successful adults are communication, collaboration, creativity, leadership, socialisation, and problem solving. All of these areas are fostered in good summer camps. Campers are always communicating with
each other, either on the field or off, learning to work together as a team and as part of a community. Campers also learn to navigate on their own and solve problems by themselves. 2. Summer camps educate the whole child. There is more to learning than
school and exams. Summer camps offers a powerful learning environment and can be a place where a child's social education takes place. It provides children with the opportunity to try new activities. When children succeed at these activities, they build self-esteem.
3. Summer camps allows kids to unplug from technology! Today's average child spends too long every day engaged with technology, which often takes the place of vital handson activities and socialisation opportunities.
4. At camp, there's plenty of time for play, which helps children with social and emotional development. Free and unstructured play is healthy and essential for helping children to reach important social, emotional, and cognitive developmental mile-

stones. It also helps kids manage stress. 5. Children can reinvent themselves. Children can reinvent themselves at camp and be who they truly want to be, which helps them to build confidence. 6. Promoting independence. Separation from one's parents means a camper has to learn to rely more on him/herself. Children learn to think independently, which builds selfesteem. Enniscorthy is fortunate in having a huge range of camps available this summer, many of which are shown below. So you are spoilt for choice! n

Torn Dreams – sTill Time To see iT!
it's back! Torn Dreams: The Musical, the first original musical penned by john reilly is currently running on the rathnure stage after a 7 year break in Torn Dreams: Revamped! since 2010, rathnure Pantomime society has produced a summer Musical each year, along with their annual christmas Panto, and even an original drama. this year, the society has decided to revisit the music of the 60’s with this brilliant musical. it tells the story of two girls divided at birth, whose paths cross later in life in the most coincidental of ways. The story begins in World War II, when a mother is forced to leave her two young girls in the care of their aunt, as she has to go to England to find her husband, presumed lost in battle. A bomb attack on the port as she is coming home has fatal consequences, leaving her two girls as orphans. Their aunt can only afford to keep one of them. She decides to bring up Laura, while placing Sue in the care of the Sisters of Mercy in a convent. The girls must never find out that they are sisters, and this is a horrible secret their aunt must carry through her life. When the girls grow up, they meet as total strangers as they attend St. Mary’s Music and Drama School, where the explosive music of the 1960’s carries them through life. However, coincidence allows both girls to fall for the same boy, and with the Annual Songwriter’s Contest fast approaching, who will win the competition, but more importantly, will their untold secret ever be revealed? There are over 30 Rock n’ Roll numbers to have you dancing in the aisles, including the original song, Torn Dreams. The show continues on 5th, 6th, 7th and 9th July at 7.45pm nightly and the Box Office is on (087) 0687801 or (087) 6954112. If you missed it first time, book your tickets now, if you saw it first time, then come see it again! This is one show you do not want to miss! n

Enniscorthy Town Manager Liz Hore and Enniscorthy Municipal District Council hosted a most beautiful Afternoon Tea at Enniscorthy Castle on Saturday afternoon 3rd June for former Queens of the Strawberry Fair.
A CASTLE OF QUEENS It was a lovely occasion with many of the Queens coming together for the very first time and the informal gathering giving them the oppor-
tunity to chat and share memories of the Fair. The Strawberry Street Rhythms Committee had commissioned a small piece of
crystal for each of the Queens as a momento of the 50th Anniversary and Liz Hore and Roisin Williams made the presentations, with Vice
Chairman of the Council, Keith Doyle, welcoming all and remarking that the judges over the years were certainly good at the selection process as any one of the former Queens could quite easily enter this year’s competition. – Maria Nolan

Wexford well represented in Wales Wexford-based musician Eleanor McEvoy and awardwinning poet Joe Neal have been added to a truly international bill for the 2017 Aberjazz Jazz ‘n’ Blues Festival in Fishguard in Wales running from August 24 to 28. McEvoy, who lives in Tagoat, will top the bill in a special show at the festival’s main venue, Theatr Gwaun, on Friday August 25, starting at 6pm. The Edenvalebased Neal will give a reading from his work at the prestigious Peppers venue at 8pm on the same evening. The Aberjazz invitation to McEvoy follows on from her previous performance there two years ago and after her recent Naked Music tour of the UK and Ireland, inspired by her Songbook and CD album of the same name. Her next album, The Thomas Moore Project, is now complete and due for release soon, and showcases McEvoy’s inventive re-workings of Moore’s best-loved songs. Eleanor says, ”I thoroughly enjoyed my last visit to Aberjazz, especially being invited to play
the fabulous grand piano at Peppers restaurant in Fishguard. Aberjazz creates such a lively buzz around the attractive seaside town and it’s always gratifying for me to meet so many respected artists from other nations.” Joe Neal was the recent winner of the Anthony Cronin International Poetry Award, and his Aberjazz reading will focus on The Next Blue Note, published in June. Joe says, “For my Aberjazz reading I will alternate poems with a music theme with ones about Wales. Since the 1950s, Poetry and Jazz have often been linked in performances where each enhances the other, so as a life-long fan of both I’m delighted to have been invited to participate in Aberjazz 2017.” The Fishguard Jazz ‘n’ Blues Festival, with its proximity to Wexford via Stena Line’s Rosslare-Fishguard ferry link, is an increasingly popular draw for Irish music fans. So for full information re the Aberjazz 2017 programme, prices and bookings, go to www.aberjazz.com n
At a count of seventeen hundred children a halt had to be put on admissions to the Castle for the hugely successful Willie Wonka experience and Golden Strawberry Draw on Sunday 4th June as part of this year’s wonderful Strawberry Fair & Street Rhythms Festival. All over the Festival weekend the very hard-working Street Rhythms Committee hosted magical events for children of all ages culminating in a most spectacular display at Castle Street and Enniscorthy
Castle on the final day of the Fair. Mammies and daddies, grannies and granddads, aunts, uncles, sisters and brothers queued in the golden sunshine to take their little treasurers into the Castle and the magical world of Willie Wonka and the Chocolate Factory. The Castle, wondrous at all times, took on an enchanting, fairytale quality thanks to the theatrical wiles of Willie Wonka himself, aka Liam Sharkey, and his fantastic band of Rathnure Pantomime actors
who gave sterling performances as the Oompa Loompas and other characters from the world of fantasy. Hundreds upon hundreds of little eyes lit up as the curtain was pulled back to reveal an Aladdin’s Cave of chocolate, sweets, lollipops and bars of every description, colour, shape, flavour and hue – as every child’s dream came true right there in front of them. Meanwhile, outside in the Castle grounds, there were games aplenty as Princesses, real and imagined, joined with kids
of all ages trying their damnest to win a Golden Ticket. And over on Castle Street slightly older kids were trying desperately to stay on the Bucking Bronco, or having a go at Sumo Wrestling or doing a Bungee Jump with a difference, while at Market Square there were men on stilts, magicians and acrobats. The town pulsated with wonder, magic and excitement totally fitting for the 50th Anniversary of our much loved Fair. – Maria Nolan

Despite making music for nearly fifty years his first solo album “I love the noise it makes” was only recorded aged 62. Musician and singer/songwriter Declan Sinnott is accompanied, as usual, by the beautiful voice of Vickie Keating. The duo have played more than a hundred gigs together over the last two years. All the songs on the album are either written by Declan or co-written with his good friend, business entrepreneur, Owen O’Brien, and were recorded at Declan’s own home studio, plus he played all the instruments on the album. All harmonies on “Window on the World” were sung by Vickie Keating. Declan was a founding member of Horslips and Moving Hearts. He guided the career of Mary Black for over thirteen years. Doors and full bar open 45 minutes before the show. Wallis Bird had been quietly working away on her fifth album for the best part of eighteen months. Home, her brand new album, is a collection that encompasses a vast range of styles and moods without ever sacrificing the indelible character at its centre. From ‘Change’ – the last song she wrote, but nonetheless her favourite – which opens the album in a deceptively downbeat fashion before blossoming into something truly joyous, to the serene reflection of the closing ‘Seasons’; via the celebration of friendship at the heart of ‘That Leads The Way’; and the intimate, almost R&B feel of ‘The Deep Reveal’; Bird appears utterly fearless. She even makes space for friends to join her on the irresistibly jubilant ‘Love’, and yet the album’s title track finds her stripping things right back, singing a cappella in the Irish Sean Nós style. At times, one feels, there’s nothing she’s not prepared to try. Former RTE Newsreader and Wexford gal, Ann Doyle, made history on Friday night, 2nd June, becoming the only person in fifty years to open the Strawberry Fair twice. Ann was introduced by MC Jimmy Gahan as a wonderful Ambassador for Wexford who never refuses the call of her county and gives freely of her time, expertise and talent to all things Wexford. Ann told the Market Square crowd that she was delighted to be back again in Enniscorthy at the Strawberry Fair, having many, many great memories of the Festival through the years. In fact, she said that she was at the very first one in 1967 and did something
Ann Doyle makes history
that she seemed to recall with glee, but wouldn’t divulge despite being pressed by Mr. Gahan, saying that she wasn’t a kiss and tell kinda gal. Ann went on to interview several of the former Queens, including Nadia Malocca, Gail Gordon Cummins, Ciara Butler, Leanne Hore, Marie Murphy and current Queen Rebecca O’Connor, asking each for their own special memories of their Coronation, as she put it, and their reign as Strawberry Queen and was visibly moved when Maria Murphy told her that her dad always said that it was the proudest moment of his life seeing his daughter crowned Strawberry Queen.
“That certainly puts the Festival in context,” Ann said, “and illustrates just how important it has been to generations of Enniscorthy people over the past fifty years.” She concluded by asking the people of Enniscorthy to continue to love and support the Festival saying, “Small towns like Enniscorthy need Festivals like this to keep them going, to bring in the tourists and to add a bit of life, colour and culture to our summers and to give the future generations of Enniscorthians their treasured memories to look back on in fifty years to come.” – Maria Nolan

All Ireland Farmers Market competition in Enniscorthy The 10th All Ireland Farmers Market local artisan food producers’ competition took place on Sunday 4th June in Enniscorthy which has been hosting this very important event since 2008. This event is growing in interest, popularity and competitiveness. It’s the national centre and the showcase/platform for local, small, artisan food producers from all over Ireland to come to Enniscorthy and compete for the prestigious award of being the best artisan food producer in the country plus a substantial financial award and the perpetual cup! It’s a fantastic opportunity for small food producers around the country to enter and showcase their creations.
Enniscorthy Farmers Market alone has many success stories from small beginnings in food production: 1. Killowen Yogurts. 2. O’Neill Foods. 3. Zanna – Owen & Lorna Mullins. 4. Mary O’Hanlon – gluten free breads and cakes. 5. Wild About – Fiona Faulkner. 6. Clodagh Davis – cordials. The above mentioned food producers are now supplying many large retail outlets throughout Ireland. This year ’s All Ireland Farmers Market competition winner was the Millstreet, Co. Cork, based Eleanor Leahy, of Nibbles Food Emporium – an award-winning artisan bakery
which specialises in dietary restriction, in particular gluten, wheat, dairy, yeast and egg free produce. This love of good food and good health has resulted in breads and cakes which are a delicious alternative to the longlife products currently available. The philosophy in Nibbles is to produce real food as nature intended, without any additives, preservatives or improvers, using the best quality and locally sourced ingredients. Nibbles was a very worthy winner of this year’s competition. It is hoped that the Strawberry Fair and the All Ireland Farmers Market food competition will continue in tandem for many more years to come in Enniscorthy – the home of great food! n

Bunclody Town Team awards €20,000 to local groups Bunclody Town Team, in conjuction with Wexford County Council and Carlow County Council, recently held an Awards night in Bunclody where they presented certificates to 16 local community groups who were recipients of community grants under the government-funded Rural Economic Development Zone initiative (REDZ). Grants totalling almost €20,000 were awarded to 16 Bunclody-based community groups, including Bunclody Ti d y To w n s A s s o c i a t i o n , Bunclody Day Care Services, Bunclody Swimming Pool and FDYS. Local sporting organisations, including Bunclody GAA and Bunclody Soccer Club also received funding, as well as a number of residents associations from the local area. The awards night was the culmination of a joint initiative of Wexford County Council,
Carlow County Council and local community groups, business interests and other State bodies from the Bunclody area who recently joined forces to develop a number of local initiatives including community leadership, enterprise support, festival development and tourism. The initiative led to the establishment of the Bunclody Town Team, the organisation that is now responsible for managing the REDZ project in Bunclody and which includes representation from many organisations and businesses from the local area. Speaking at the event, Chairperson of the Bunclody Town Team, Councillor BarbaraAnne Murphy congratulated all the groups present on their invaluable contributions, individually and collectively, to the local community. Councillor Murphy also outlined future proposals from the very active Bunclody Town Team, includ-
ing the provision of additional training and grant funding for local businesses, additional tourism supports and further town enhancement works. Councillor Kathleen Codd-
Nolan also congratulated the groups present and thanked those involved for their diligence and hard work in making the REDZ project such an outstanding success.
five year old cognac. Jean Pierre got quite emotional as he made his Bon Voyage speech, saying that he had a very happy and fruitful four years here making many, many friends all over the country particularly in Wexford and Mayo and he thanked Stephen Dunford and his team, and Ray Murphy and his group, for joining him as he bade farewell. He said the links between Ireland and France have traditionally been strong and he hoped he had solidified them even more during his tenure. He thanked the people of Ireland for their amazing solidarity and compassion during France’s most recent tragedies, saying he would never forget their kindness and empathy. He concluded by thanking his wife and family for their support and love over the four years and his team at the embassy for their hard work and tremendous loyalty.

French Ambassador says Au Revoir
It was a major honour for Enniscorthy Historical Reenactment Society to be among the invited guests to 36 Ailesbury Road, Dublin, on 7th June to say Au Revoir to Jean Pierre Thebault – the French Ambassador. Over three hundred guests enjoyed the wonderful hospitality of the Ambassador at his palatial residence for his ‘Going Away Party’ as he is recalled to France after four years of service as Ambassador to Ireland. Many friends and associates from Dail Eireann were present including our own James Browne TD and Tanaiste Frances Fitzgerald along with Wexford’s Malcolm Byrne and John Carley, Director of Services at Wexford County Council. The guests were treated to champagne on arrival and guided to a large marquee in the Rose Garden where they partook of a delicious French buffet accompanied by excellent wines and of course thirty-

Funding for older people and people with disabilities €1,794,000 funding has been made available for older people and people with disabilities in Wexford for adaptation of their homes. That’s according to Minister Paul Kehoe, Fine Gael TD for Wexford, who is encouraging local people to apply for the grants to help them stay in their own homes. “Grants of up to €30,000 are available for an adaptation of a home. Up to €8,000 is available for housing aid for older people and up to €6,000 is allocated for mobility aids. “These types of schemes are also good news for the construction sector, helping to create jobs in that sector which of course also has a knock-on positive effect for the local economy here in Wexford.”
May we say, ‘Thank you Jean Pierre for remembering us as you prepare to take your leave and until we meet again may you and your family and the people of France remain safe and free from terrorist attacks.’ – Maria Nolan
Wexford Co. Council’s new Chairman Cllr John Hegarty has been elected as Chairperson of Wexford County Council. Minister Paul Kehoe has congratulated his Fine Gael colleague saying, “It is a great and well deserved honour for John, his family and the Gorey district. “I have known and worked
with John for many years and have always been impressed by his dilligence, dedication and hard work, all of which I know he will bring to this role. “I also wish to pass on my congratulations and thanks to Councillor Paddy Kavanagh, after his year in office.” n

Riverside Park Hotel – bigger and better than ever 15 new jobs have been created for Enniscorthy with the renovation of the Prom Bar and the opening of 22 new bedrooms at the four-star Riverside Park Hotel which originally opened its doors in 1998. A launch event was held in conjunction with Enniscorthy Chamber on 15th June and was a huge success with Minister Paul kehoe doing the official opening. The 22 new luxurious bedrooms (bringing the total number to 100) consist of 5 couples deluxe rooms, 2 junior suites overlooking the town and Enniscorthy Castle, 6 large family rooms that can cater for 2 adults and up to 3 and 4 children in one room, and 9 new deluxe rooms including 2 accessible rooms. The inclusion of extra family rooms is in response to the ever-increasing demand from families. Such rooms are not regularly available in hotels traditionally and the Riverside is delighted to be providing more of them to add to the six such rooms already in the hotel. Mr Neville is quick to point out that while the Riverside Park Hotel is well renowned as one of the premier wedding celebration venues in the South East, it is also very popular for families and leisure breaks, with Enniscorthy proving a fantastic growing destination for tourists exploring Wexford and the South East. The new couples deluxe rooms and junior suites brings
the level of bedroom luxury to a whole new level, with jacuzzi baths, power showers, colour changing led lighting, 50” flat screen TVs and unusual design of glass walls between bathroom and bedroom, all creating a very distinctive unique selling point. The Prom Bar has been extended to hold an extra 40 seats. It is now one of the most stylish hotel bars in the entire South East with a complete glass wall overlooking the beautiful River Slaney and with rich colour tones, comfortable sofas, divided areas, large TVs, outdoor seating area and offering its customers an extensive bar food menu as well as extensive whiskey, gin, craft beer and cocktail selections. The hotel has seen a huge investment over recent years with the opening of its second function room, the Seamus Rafter Suite, and the last expansion of 20 bedrooms in 2014. The expansion of the Riverside Park Hotel comes off the back of two further significant investments Mr Neville has made in the hospitality industry in the recent past, having with his brother, Anthony, purchased and fully refurbished the four-star 115 bedroomed all new Midlands Park Hotel & Conference Centre (formerly the Portlaoise Heritage Hotel), as well as having purchased and re-developed the popular Crown Bar in Wexford town in 2015. The Riverside has seen

strong growth in the tourism sector over the past two years due to the upturn in the economy, the growth of overseas visitors to the country in general, the promotion of our area from both Visit Wexford and Enniscorthy Tourism, and Enniscorthy & District Chamber of Commerce, as well as the significant investment made by the Local Authorities in tourism in general. The entire new extension will create an additional requirement for 15 new jobs at the property, bringing the total number of staff employed at the Riverside Park Hotel to 194. From local feedback the effect of the last expansion of 20 bedrooms was felt by businesses on the streets of Enniscorthy town, from retailers and tourism suppliers alike, and the hotel anticipates that this expansion, being an additional 30% more bedrooms, will equally benefit the town significantly. The entire team at the Riverside Park Hotel & Leisure Club have a proven track record and will continue to offer their customers an impeccable, high level of accommodation, service and standard of personalised care. Mr Neville, together with the Hotel’s General Manager of 19 years, Mr Jim Maher, are confident that the public will be pleased with this further investment and they thank their loyal customers for their continued business and support down through the years. n

Deputy Browne criticises Revenue decision to downgrade Wexford
Ógra Fianna Fáil A young member recounts a recent trip to Leinster House
Fianna Fáil TD for Wexford, James Browne, has criticised Revenue’s decision to change the customer service system at the Wexford Public Enquiry Office on Anne St in Wexford town. ‘From 26th June, appointments with Revenue staff in Wexford must be booked in advance. The loss of the drop-in service is totally unacceptable. This will have a negative impact on people across the county’, Deputy Browne stated. The Fianna Fáil TD views Revenue’s decision to deal with the public only by appointment and only in circumstances where the Revenue is agreeable to an appointment as unfair and unreasonable. ‘The Revenue office opened in the early 1990s to make Revenue staff available to deal with taxpayers’ issues. This downgrade of access is a retrograde and undemocratic decision’, Deputy Browne explained. ‘It’s completely unsatisfactory for Revenue to expect comprehensive tax returns but to close their doors to people who go to the Wexford office for help with their returns. I intend to bring this to the attention of the Minister for Finance’, Deputy Browne concluded. n
An enjoyable day in the Dáil was had by all in attendance when Ógra Fianna Fáil was greeted by Deputy James Browne at the gates of Leinster House. Firstly, we were sitting in the gallery of the lower house listening to leader’s questions. We all found it fascinating to see all the big names in the Dáil chamber. FF Leader Micheál Martin was present which was great for our members to see. It was a huge benefit to see the chamber in practice which added to our knowledge of the running of politics and how much work is done by elected members. We were then given a tour of the house. We saw the impressive portraits of former Taoisigh. Then we headed into the upper house, Seanad Éireann. We then went for a meal within the house, an impressive restaurant to say the least. This meal was of huge benefit to our members as Deputy James Browne joined us and spoke to us about the ins and outs of politics. It was great to hear how James goes about his day. On the previous day he told us that he was occupied with mental health and agriculture. James was open to us asking him questions. We’re all in agreement that it was a great experience and maybe the next time we enter the house one of us will be an elected member answering questions for the next generation! Ógra as always is open to new members and ideas. Don’t be shy! Contact any of our members or find us on Facebook. n

Every now and then you come across someone that just seems to have it every way. They're funny and kind, clever and compassionate, efficient and hard working. Our receptionist Jenny hits all these notes. She is loved by both the clients and the staff alike. She has a way with people, a kind word, an interest in them that sets her apart. But like lots of things in life circumstances change, life takes us in new directions and sometimes you don't have any say in it, you just gotta go with it and accept that it’s the way it’s meant to be. And so it is with Jenny. She has finished up with us after almost 10 years of loyal service and we wish her well in her new career in Dublin. She will be sadly missed by all the clients, staff and vets in our practice. With every ending is a new beginning and I'm sure the universe will bring someone as good… or better!!… if that is possible!!!

A local contributor looks at life today in Enniscorthy and beyond Kehoe anD D’arcy The new government, if we can call it that, has been formed. Wexford has benefited by being given an extra Minister of State in that Michael D’Arcy has been appointed to the Department of Finance. Paul Kehoe remains as the effective Minister for Defence and has proven himself to be a political survivor in more ways than one. In the last general election it looked that his career was over but he pulled himself over the line like Lazarus coming back from the dead. By all accounts he is now a senior politician with a bit of weight to throw around. Very few would have predicted that Wexford would get two ministers in Leo Varadkar’s reshuffle seeing that so many political favours had to be repaid to those who had supported him. Many of Leo’s supporters must feel miffed that not only have they been overlooked but entire regions of the country have been left without as much as a smell of a minister, senior or junior, while Wexford gets two. This is more down to Kehoe’s strength than anything D’Arcy did for Varadkar. Both supported Leo, with D’Arcy being in there from the beginning and Kehoe falling in line at a later stage. The natural fall of events would have been that
D’Arcy would have been promoted and Kehoe (who has been a junior minister since 2011) dropped to make way for a candidate from some other constituency. It is fairly obvious that Varadkar didn’t feel strong enough to take on Kehoe in this way therefore leaving him in situ and being prepared to upset others elsewhere. All in all it is good for Wexford that Kehoe remains at the Cabinet table as a Super Junior Minister and that D’Arcy has been elevated to the junior ranks. And yes, by predicting that Wexford would not get two ministers, View from the Hill got it wrong by underestimating Paul Kehoe’s ability to survive. Fair dues to him. Michael D’arcy One of Michael D’Arcy’s responsibilities at the Department of Finance is to look at the question of the huge increases in the cost of car insurance. It will be a difficult task with many strong forces lined up against him. Many reasons, ranging from profits of multinational insurance underwriters to false claims by unscrupulous people, have been given for these exorbitant costs. Most of these reasons are not without foundation but will take years to solve therefore leaving the

View from the Hill average driver being penalised for probably decades to come. However, there is one area directly within the control of our own government which can be looked at immediately. That is the cost of car repairs, under an insurance claim. I have written about this here before. The practice is the well rehearsed question when you turn up at a garage with your damaged vehicle: “Is this an insurance job?” The minute you say “yes” the price escalates into the horizon beyond the stratosphere. This happens all the time and should be investigated by D’Arcy and his department. I personally had the experience of
a driver striking my car and doing some damage. I was quoted €398 for the job and when the other driver decided to go the way of insurance rather than pay personally the quote jumped to €995. This is the type of thing which must be stamped out. It should never be necessary for a garage to ask as to how a job is going to be paid for until the first true quote has been accepted. It’s an area that Michael D’Arcy should immediately turn his sights to. Driving on Motorways I have no idea how some people pass their driving tests. Driving back from Croke Park last Sunday
the traffic was, as expected, fairly heavy. This should not normally cause a problem given the good roads we now have. That is provided those who drive know how to use the road. My experience on Sunday was that one idiot, driving a small white car, got into the outside lane and travelled at 80km per hour in that lane virtually all the way from the M50/M11 junction to the end of the motorway or dual carriageway north of Camolin. The chaos that this idiot caused had to be seen to be believed. Cars were bunged up in both lanes for miles behind him, and there was nothing but clear road for miles in front of him (and yes it was a him) with the more impatient ones darting back in to the inside lane to try and get past. It was an accident waiting to happen and in fairness to the literally hundreds of drivers that this fool discommoded it was their patience which prevented a disaster occurring. What more can I say other than these fools should simply not be on the road. local elections 1967 Fifty years ago, in June 1967, local e l e c t i o n s w e re h e l d . T h e Enniscorthy District of the County Council had 5 seats. The outcome of the election was that the following were elected: Andy Doyle
of the Labour Party, Sean Browne and Rory Murphy of Fianna Fail, Jim Bowe and John Quirke of Fine Gael. I had the pleasure of meeting all these gentlemen, and that’s what they truly were, over the years. I would have known John Quirke, Rory Murphy and Sean Browne quite well and would have, as I say, met the other two men on occasions. They had one thing in common, regardless of their political differences, and that was the good of Enniscorthy District. They worked as a team inside the county council to ensure that the best was delivered to their area. Many of today’s politicians could learn from these men. All have now gone to their eternal reward. I think that our more senior readers will remember them with fondness and I believe that their families will appreciate them being remembered fifty years on from that election. The present Cllr Keith Doyle is of course a son of the late Andy, and Cllr Barbara-Anne Murphy a daughter of the late Rory, while James Browne TD is a grandnephew of the late Sean Browne TD, Senator and Councillor. n We are often asked: Who is the “View from the Hill” columnist? All we can say is that the author’s surname is NOT Doyle!

HOOK... worlD’s olDest lighthouse gets tech savvy with new online tour BooKing Following the busiest year yet at the lighthouse on the tip of the Hook Peninsula, management is alleviating queues for visitors by making advance booking of guided tours for Hook Lighthouse available online. Commenting on the launch of the new Hook Lighthouse website (www.hookheritage.ie) and online booking, Manager of Hook Lighthouse Ann Waters said, “In 2016 we saw year-on-year growth of 10% with visitor numbers of 250,000 and in the month of August alone we welcomed 38,617 visitors. Some of those who visited particularly during the peak summer period waited for over two hours to avail of a tour of the 800-year-old lighthouse, so we wanted to alleviate that inconvenience for our visitors and allow them to book a specific tour date and time online in advance of their visit to us.” Earlier this month, Failte Ireland published its annual
list of Ireland’s top tourist sights, with most attractions registering strong growth in the last year and Hook Lighthouse also seeing year-on-year double-digit growth on par with Ireland’s other top attractions. “As an 800-year-old protected medieval structure of limited size, with a maximum capacity for each tour of 30 persons, the ability for visitors to book online in advance of arriving at the lighthouse will provide huge benefits not only to our visitors but also for our team,” Ann said. Hook Lighthouse is the most popular tourism attraction in Co. Wexford and the third most popular in the South East region after the Rock of Cashel and Kilkenny Castle respectively. Tours of the ancient lighthouse are available from 9.30am daily all year round and tour tickets are sold for fiftyminute tours of the lighthouse tower. Tickets can now be booked online in advance or purchased at the Lighthouse reception desk and advance group booki n g s a re a l s o t a k e n . S e e www.hookheritage.ie n

seaT ibiza review by Caroline Kidd
the new seat ibiza is arriving in dealers around now and goes on sale from €14,995. this all-new model sits on a new small car platform that will also underpin the new volkswagen Polo. Current Ibiza owners won’t get too much of a shock when they visit their dealer because the new design is more evolutionary than revolutionary. B u t t h e S E AT I b i z a h a s matured well with more lines and contours for an edgier and sportier look. The car has not grown in length, but it looks more elongated and elegant in the metal when compared to the previous model. There is a choice of seven body colours including Desire Red, Mystery Blue and Mystic Magenta. Inside there is a new cabin design that is a big improvement over the outgoing model. The material quality has i m p ro v e d a n d t h e l a rg e expanse of grey dashboard
Seat Ibiza
has been broken up with a new decorative moulding that stretches the width of the cabin. A large touchscreen with glossy black surround is the focal point in the centre of the dash. The SEAT Ibiza is sold now as five door only. The new Ibiza is a significant 87mm wider than the car it replaces
and there is more shoulder room between you and your passenger. The rear seating space in the previous generation always felt a little on the small side but there is now more leg room and headroom for rear seat passengers. Boot space has increased by 63 litres to 355 litres, which is excellent for this class of vehicle.
In Ireland, the new SEAT Ibiza will be available at launch with a non-turbo 1.0-litre (75hp) petrol engine and a new 1.0-litre TSI turbo petrol with 95 or 115hp. Joining later will be a new 1.5-litre TSI 150hp four cylinder turbo petrol and 1.6-litre diesels (80 and 95hp). A DSG automatic gearbox is available paired

I’ve driven the new 1.0litre 115hp turbo petrol engine and this engine is fast and nippy. It’s great around town but also flexible enough to be taken out on the bigger roads. The Ibiza now strikes a better balance between sharp handling and comfort in the road, and the steering has also been improved. There is an excellent feeling of grip and it tightens perfectly going into turns. At motorway speeds, the Ibiza is stable, quiet and refined. The all-new SEAT Ibiza is available in four trim levels in Ireland: S (from €14,995), SE (from €17,335), XCELLENCE (from €18,745) and FR (from €19,465). Entry level equipment includes Front Assist, remote central locking and touchscreen. SE cars add 15“alloys, front fog lights, LED DRLs, rear LED lights, air con and Bluetooth. Xcellence
adds a leather pack, cruise control, rear parking sensors, keyless entry and start, and folding electric mirrors. FR is the sporty one and features 17“alloys, dark tinted rear windows, SEAT Drive Profile, and updated styling. The SEAT Ibiza will be up against it this year with plenty of new competition coming from new or refreshed models like the Toyota Yaris, Renault Clio, Nissan Micra, Ford Fiesta and Kia Rio. But the SEAT Ibiza’s confident stance and style on the outside is matched to a new found maturity on the road. Model tested: SEAT Ibiza 1.0TSI XCELLENCE. Price: €20,185. Engine: 1.0-litre turbo petrol. Power: 115hp. 0-100km/h: 9.3 seconds. Economy: 4.7l/100km. CO2 emissions: 108g/km. Tax band: €190 per year. n

Wexford GAA is still on track
on sunday last wexford’s hurling renaissance hit a bit of a roadblock in the shape of a physically powerful and superbly fit galway team who continue to justify their favourites tag for this year’s all-ireland.
To be competitive for most of the game, and to run Galway a lot closer than current AllIreland champions Tipperary could do in the League final, was no mean feat and while defeat is never easy to accept we can take pride in a season
that has so far exceeded all expectations and we’re not finished yet! One way to show your appreciation and support for all our county teams is to attend the annual Supporters’ Club Greyhound Race Night at
Enniscorthy track on Thursday, 6th July. This fun event has become a major source of funding for the Supporters Club and Wexford GAA with all proceeds going towards the further development and enhancement of all our Wexford teams. n

Slaney Arts & Heritage
5 July 2017
The Athenaeum is SO appealing The Athenaeum Museum and Historic Theatre has been rejoicing and revelling since her timely renaissance last year for the 1916 Easter Rising centenary commemorations. The invocation of the spirit of County Wexford’s Irish Volunteers by the townspeople in 2008, ensured their military headquarters’ perpetual place in the history of Enniscorthy, and Ireland. The inestimable benevolence of locals and well-wishers, followed at the highest level by County Wexford TDs Paul Kehoe and Brendan Howlin, the significance of the Athenaeum was brought to the attention of Minister for Arts, Heritage, Regional, Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs, Heather Humphreys. The backing of the 1916 Commemoration Committee was the crucial factor and sealed the restoration deal. A grant from central government of €900,000 was forthcoming and The Athenaeum was designated one of nine national flagship projects and
permanent reminder of the Rising. Once the money was received, Wexford County Council was cardinal to the enterprise and made available the best personnel and expertise in the county to bring the project to fruition. And when
the finish line was within sight, the Council made up the shortfall in funds required to make The Athenaeum fully functional and make the theatre fit for purpose. Now, one year on, The Athenaeum needs a regular income to sustain it. All per-
sons working there are volunteers – duties include curatorship of the museum and taking admission fees, ticket sales, function room set-up, administration, advertising and promotion, bookkeeping, cleaning and being on call. The only paid member of staff is a Tús worker. The Athenaeum is a registered charity and it is open to the public seven days per week. Some years ago a Standing Order initiative was set up whereby benefactors would sign up to donating €5 per month through their bank account. This was of great benefit to the charity as it guaranteed a set income. The Athenaeum is now asking people to sign up again and help keep the long-awaited and integral asset to the town alive. Constant bills, standing charges and insurance are very high and any help would be greatly appreciated. Standing Order forms are available at The Athenaeum or by phoning 087-2637178. n

A short new year’s email, bearing a simple enquiry, led to the most beautiful day in the Athenaeum last month. Enniscorthy girl, Brigid Carley, sent an email wondering if there was “a suitable space at The Athenaeum to hold a wedding ceremony?” Since the re-opening of the historic theatre in 2016, there have been a number of shows, concerts and gatherings in the auditorium, but there has never been a wedding. The idea of marriage ceremonies was an aspiration of The Athenaeum directors down the line, but Brigid’s question was the catalyst that made it happen sooner rather than later. Several emails later, and a visit to view the venue, and the deal was done. Saturday 3rd of June was set as the date and all things led to that bank holiday weekend. Brigid and husband-to-be Martin Swannell, an English man, have been together for ten years. They had one son, Jack, who passed away last winter. They live in England and travelled here for their big day. The marriage was in some ways ironic as it was being held in the headquarters of the Irish Volunteers’ forces during the 1916 Rising. The ceremony took place in what was the field hospital.
The secular Humanist service was celebrated by Teresa Graham from Waterford, a member of the Humanist Association of Ireland. Humanism is defined by the Association as an ethical philosophy of life, based on a concern for humanity in general, and for human individuals in particular. This view of life combines reason with compassion. It is for those people who base their interpretation of existence on the evidence of the natural world and its evolution, and not on belief in a supernatural power. O n e h u n d re d g u e s t s attended and were met on the steps of The Athenaeum by Enniscorthy Historical Re-enactment Society in full 1916 costume. The bride and her father were met by Ray Murphy who guided them up the staircase in solemn procession to the awaiting groom in the theatre. The room was decorated with tables and chairs from the 1916 museum and floral displays created by Julie and Nancy Ashdown. The board of directors expresses its delight at having had the honour of playing a small part in the story of Mr and Mrs Swannell. The Athenaeum is now available for weddings. Carmel Harrington, Chairperson of Wexford Literary Festival and author of Beyond Graces Rainbow, Every Time A Bell Rings, The Things I Should Have Told you and The Life you Left, has just launched her fifth book, The Woman at 72 Derry Lane. Set on a leafy street in Dublin, the novel explores the unlikely friendship between two neighbours. Cleverly interweaving two storylines, Carmel Harrington has done it again with a hugely evocative, heartwarming story of two families surviving trauma and desperately trying to find a way forward. Domestic abuse, grief and agoraphobia are handled with great sensitivity as well as humour and readers will laugh and cry as they turn the pages, so much so that Harper Collins are issuing a pack of tissues with every copy! The Woman at 72 Derry Lane is of particular interest to yours truly as my good friend Carmel has created a character in the book called Maria

Nolan. Based on me or not I have no idea and cannot wait to read this latest novel from the ‘Queen of Emotional Writing’ as described by Woman’s Way. And that is not Carmel’s only piece of news, methinks this lovely lady and gifted writer has truly found gold at the end of her rainbow having been chosen from a myriad of
authors to write Cold Feet: The Lost Years. Anyone who was watching TV in the 1990s and early noughties will remember the hugely popular Cold Feet drama on ITV. We loved it for being both funny and heartbreaking, for presenting warm, honest, flawed-but-real people who felt more like our mates than characters on a screen.
In autumn 2017, Cold Feet comes back on our screens for a seventh series and alongside it will be published an original Cold Feet novel – Cold Feet: The Lost Years written by our very own Carmel Harrington in collaboration with the show’s creator Mike Bullen. And how cool is that? The novel will be set between the old and new series, filling in the gaps – ‘It’s the missing piece of the puzzle that the show’s millions of fans have been waiting for.’ ITV Producer Mike Bullen says, ‘I’m delighted that a writer of the calibre of Carmel Harrington is taking on the challenge of joining the dots between the original Cold Feet and its recent incarnation. Like other fans of the show, I’m excited to catch up with the characters lives in the intervening years.’ Carmel Harrington, who beat off stiff competition to be chosen, said, ‘I’ve been a diehard fan of Cold Feet from that first electric pilot episode in 1997. It’s a joy to write fur-
ther adventures for these beloved characters, created by the incredible Mike Bullen. I’m honoured and excited to work with him and the team at ITV.’ Cold Feet: The Lost Years will publish in hardcover and eBook on 5th September and will be supported by an innovative and far-reaching marketing and publicity plan. All at the Wexford Literary Festival are delighted for our esteemed Chairperson and excited about the future possibilities for her and indeed the Festival. Could we perhaps be looking at another red carpet event here in Enniscorthy – well who knows! The Woman at 72 Derry Lane was launched in Dublin on Thursday 15th June at at Dubray Books on Grafton Street and at The Book Centre, South Main Street, Wexford, on Friday 16th June. This amazing local lady is putting Wexford on the global literary map in more ways than one. Well done our gal. Watch this space. – Maria Nolan
