A record number of 870 towns and villages across Ireland entered the national Tidy Towns Competition in 2017, and the great news is that Enniscorthy secured a bronze medal – a wonderful achievement. In fact, Enniscorthy scored a total of 303 marks out of a possible 450 which is six marks more than 2016, which in turn was four marks more than in 2015, which in turn was five more than the previous year.
So the trend is very definitely upwards. The overall national winner was the village of Birdhill in Co. Tipperary with a score of 332 so there is still plenty of opportunity for Enniscorthy to improve and hopefully secure a silver medal next year. Well done to all involved in this success particularly Enniscorthy Tidy Towns committee and volunteers, and Enniscorthy Municipal District and its staff. n

comment On 28th September, at a special meeting of Wexford County Council, the Council determined the Local Property Tax (LPT) for 2018, with an increase of 4.76% on the 2017 rate. This represents an overall increase of 10% on the base rate, set in 2012 when Local Property Tax was first introduced. Council officials point out that the additional income created will fund an Economic Infrastructure Development Programme as well as supporting existing services. On page 8 we include an impressive list of economic projects planned or in progress by Wexford County Council. Sinn Féin believes these projects could be funded by different means without raising the LPT and is critical of cuts in local government funding by central government. , The decision to increase the LPT was voted in by 21 votes to 9, the nine against being four Sinn Féin, one Independent, one People Before Profit and three Fianna Fail councillors. – Frank Corcoran

Despite its long and distinguished history (Enniscorthy Credit Union was founded in 1964), Liz Cullen is only the financial institution’s third Manager, her predecessors being Seamus Comerford (19711997) and Tony Ennis (19972016). Tech Tip
how To Tell If your maC Is InfeCTed
by DaviD pohluDek Ferns compuTer services
There are a lot of reasons Mac users don’t sweat getting infected. One: They’ve got a built-in antimalware system called XProtect. Two: Macs are not plagued by a high number of attacks. (Most cybercriminals are focused on infecting PCs.) And three: There’s just not a lot of Mac malware out there. But that’s changing, and fast: Mac malware has increased by 230 percent in the last year alone. Most Mac users don’t know this, and assume their Mac is fine. For those folks we have one word: adware. Adware is software that’s designed to display advertisements, usually within a web browser. Once in your system, adware changes the way your browser behaves by injecting ads into web pages, causing pop-up windows or tabs to open, and changing your homepage or search engine—all in the name of funneling advertising dollars away from companies who pay for online ads and into their own accounts. So why doesn’t the Mac anti-malware program catch these guys? Typically, the makers of adware are hiding in plain sight, operating as actual corporations who claim to sell software on the level. They get away with it because their adware is often hidden in the fine print of a long installation agreement that most people skip over. Signs of adware: Advertisements are displayed in places they shouldn’t be, literally popping up everywhere. Your web browser’s homepage has been mysteriously changed without your permission. Web pages that you typically visit are not displaying properly, and when you click on a website link, you get redirected to an entirely different site. Do any of these scenarios sound familiar to you? If so, first, back up your files. Next, download a (legitimate) anti-malware program such as Malwarebytes for Mac. Run a scan and, if there are any nasties hiding away in your pristine Mac OS, it’ll bag, tag, and dump them for you. Ferns Computer Services has been in business in Ferns since May 2007. Established by David Pohludek, it has a huge clientele base all over Co. Wexford and beyond.

Successful Golden Anniversary for Strawberry Fair The mood of the Annual general meeting of the County Wexford strawberry fair was upbeat last month at the riverside park hotel as the outgoing committee reviewed a very successful golden Anniversary. Outgoing Chairman Cyril Wheelock in his address had special praise for the Enniscorthy Street Rhythms Committee under Chairperson Bernie Morrissey and the Strawberry Roots Committee under Chairman Eamonn Doyle saying that they all rowed in together to produce a Festival worthy of the 50th Anniversary, and he very much hoped that the partnership would continue well into the future. Town Manager Liz Hore gave a most comprehensive Secretary’s Report detailing all aspects of the Festival and was congratulated for her excellent work and for the terrific support received from Enniscorthy Municipal District Council.
Treasurer Colin Levingstone detailed Income and Expenditure of the 2016 Festival leaving a small surplus with all bills paid. Tributes were paid to Jimmy Gahan for his excellent PR coverage aided by Maria Nolan and Roisin Williams giving a great media profile to the Festival. Jimmy was also praised for his tremendous contribution to this year’s Pub Talent Competition, assisted by 2016 Queen, Rebecca O’Connor. Local Property Tax to rise for 2018 Hero Jim honoured on 28th september, at a special meeting of Wexford County Council, the Council determined the local property Tax (lpT) for 2018, with an increase of 4.76% on the 2017 rate. This represents an overall increase of 10% on the base rate, set in 2012 when local property Tax was first introduced. Council officials point out that the additional income created will fund an Economic Infrastructure Development Programme as well as supporting existing Services. The Special Meeting of the Council involved consideration of the financial position of the Council, submissions made by the public through the public consultation process and the financial impact of a variation of the LPT on the economy of the county and on property owners. For the vast majority (92%) of Wexford households, the Council‘s decision means their LPT will increase by between €0.09 and €0.30 cent per week, when compared to their 2017 charge. Wexford County Council’s Director of Services, Economic Development and Planning, Tony Larkin made a detailed presentation to the Members to

Mr. Enright pointed to the shortage of property solutions available to facilitate local company expansion or to attract new businesses to Wexford. He also stated that the absence of high quality jobs in Wexford meant that a large proportion of young people do not return to County Wexford after completing their third level education due to the lack of job opportunities in their home county. ●

In particular, significant progress has been made on the following projects: ● Wexford Quays Development ● M11 Campus Gorey (including Gorey Hatch Lab – now complete) ● Enniscorthy Business & Technology Park ● Gorey Town Park Expansion and Redevelopment ● New Ross Town Centre Development Project ● Templeshannon Development and
county I see brand new schools everywhere – well deserved and much needed. But they just intensify my anger as I park in the car park of a ramble of portacabins, on two sites each morning. Neither site has a playground – just imagine that?! I don't mean a small playground, I mean no playground for the most vulnerable citizens in our state. No space to play. No roomy classrooms. No proper staff room for the amazing people who work here each day. I am not waiting patiently anymore. We need your help. The parents of our amazing students are already working 24/7 jobs, caring brilliantly for their children. They raise money to pay for our buses, for trips, for sensory equipment, for assessments, for gardening and cookery and art equipment, they keep this school working. They are unsung heroes. They are weary and tired and as fed up as I am. We need your help, Friends of St Patrick's. We need you to contact your TDs and say this is a disgrace. We need you to publicise this disgrace on local radio and

on 19th July this year, thirtyeight-year-old Enniscorthy man, Jim Jacob, pulled a man to safety after he got into difficulty in the river slaney in Enniscorthy. Jim’s brave action resulted last month in him receiving an Unsung Hero Special Recognition Award in the national, annual Hidden Hearing Heroes Awards which give credit to those who make a significant contribution to Irish society. This year the awards were hosted by RTE’s Mary Kennedy at a gala lunch on September 11th in the Inter-Continental Hotel, Dublin. Recalling the episode Jim says the man was in trouble in the deepest part of the river, and he could see the man was struggling, “I knew he didn’t have
much time.” Jim, a strong swimmer, but without any lifesaving experience, jumped in, swam to the man and managed to single-handedly pull him to safety much to the delight of the rescued man himself. “When I pulled him out of the water, I could see the relief on his face.” After the dramatic rescue Jim left the man in the capable hands of the ambulance crew and left the scene to continue on with his evening schedule which involved training a local underage hurling team. The modest Jim was a bit taken aback by all the publicity which followed in the aftermath of the rescuse and was even more shocked to learn about his national award. Well done Jim – a local and national hero! n

St Patrick’s Special School update on 23rd september, 2017, st patrick’s special school principal, lee rogers, went public in his battle to see the long-promised, new school built. he took to facebook and posted the following: “I have thought long and hard about this post, and whether I should post or not. But I have finally had enough. I know St Patrick's students, parents, families, teachers, SNAs and staff have had enough. When I took this job in September 2014 I was shown the plans of our amazing new school in Drumgoold. The start date was February 2016, 595 days ago. We waited patiently. This was then pushed back to Spring 2017. We waited patiently and then Summer 2017 and now Spring 2018. We have waited patiently for 595 days. We contacted our local TD’s, they all visited, many published press releases and announced great plans for our new school on local radio and in local papers. We waited patiently. I have now made hundreds of phone calls to department officials and architects and we are still waiting. As I drive to work and around this wonderful
“We can no longer wait for inward employment opportunities to come to Wexford – we must seek them out by investing in an economic development programme that will attract investors and jobs to our county” said Mr. Enright. “Wexford County Council must develop these property solutions ourselves so that when potential investors visit County Wexford, they find a range of state-of-the-art, ready for occupation, affordable and welllocated properties, allowing these companies to make an immediate decision. The additional income that will result from this increase in the LPT will allow Wexford Co. Council to continue with the implementation of our ambitious economic development programme, a programme which I am confident will bring substantial job creation opportunities to our county. The decision by Wexford County Council to adopt a 10% variation in the Local Property Tax will now form the backdrop to the Council’s 2018 Budget preparations. The Budget will be prepared over the coming weeks and will be considered in det ail b y Memb ers of Wexford Council at a special meeting in November. n

Our students deserve this as much, if not more, than any other students in the South East. I am not waiting patiently any longer and we need your help.” A huge amount of publicity was generated and whether by coincidence or otherwise, some progress has been achieved over recent days with Mr Rogers posting his thanks to everyone who lobbied on the school’s behalf and confirming that the “pre-tender notice for the new St. Patrick’s School build in Drumgoold went live on etenders” with a likely start date for building work sometime early in 2018. n

Vinegar Hill… a pause for thought much has been written in recent weeks about the discovery of mass graves on Vinegar hill with a figure of 1,500 buried victims being mentioned. The discovery was made during investigation work being carried under the Vinegar hill research project. since then the official “Vinegar hill battlefield” facebook page has posted the following statement… “Pause for thought… A lot has been written about the research project over the last couple of weeks, and particularly about the presence of a mass grave on the hill. We have seen estimates of numbers and nature of bodies mentioned, but the research team are in no position to confirm this as being the case. We have only undertaken geophysical analysis of the loca-

tion at present, and … from that analysis, all indications are as outlined. This is a very sensitive situation, and the research team will proceed carefully in this regard, taking recommendations from all relevant parties, and in line with international best practice. “It is worth remembering though that Vinegar Hill Battlefield is 'bigger' than just this one feature - albeit a very significant one. We should always
remember that the existing ditches around the hill are still a very obvious reminder of the course of events there. The windmill and Beale's Barn are also testament to the events of the 1798 Rebellion in Enniscorthy, and the soils around the hill still have a lot of information to reveal to us. We are only at the start of a long process of information gathering, but we are very thankful for the support and respect people have, and will
continue to show this battlefield. “We remind you again that it is illegal to metal detect in Ireland without a licence, and urge anybody who witnesses others depriving us of our national heritage to immediately report it to the local gardaí. “We will continue to update you as we have further information, as we know that people are very passionate and committed to Vinegar Hill Battlefield, and we thank you too for your ongoing interest and commitment.” The research team will now be analysing their findings with a view to having a significant publication and associated conference in early to mid 2018, when the outcome of their work will be fully revealed. n

Minding your mental health minding your mental health – that was the message coming loud and clear from mental h e a l t h I r e l a n d ’s A r e a development officer, linda Thorpe, speaking last month at the Enniscorthy & district C h a m b e r ’s Wa k e u p Wednesday initiative, sponsored by AIb. Linda went on to say that we are all inclined to look after our physical wellbeing through regular exercise, balanced diet and frequent medical checkups, but few of us ever consider our mental wellbeing or what we could be doing to encourage our own
positive mental health. We all need to mind our mental health, Linda explained, because the ‘ebb and flow of life will take its toll and we need to be equipped with the necessary tools to cope with its demands’. We need to stay connected, nurturing relationships with friends and family. We all need a sense of purpose, doing things that bring meaning to our lives. We need to develop healthy habits like regular exercise, balanced diet and sufficient sleep. We need to recognise our own worth and learn to value ourselves. We
need to laugh often. We need ‘go-to people’ when times get tough, friends or experts that we can talk to about our emotions. And we need to remain optimistic knowing and accepting that problems will pass and that we are not perfect and cannot be all things to all men. ‘There are’, Linda said, ‘five recommended ways to mental wellbeing – Connect, Be Active, Take Notice, Keep Learning and Give. Giving to others or doing something nice for someone else is good for you, seeing yourself and your happiness linked to the
wider community can be incredibly rewarding and create connectedness with the people around you.’ T h e A I B Wa k e U p Wednesday Programme is a wonderful initiative by Enniscorthy & District Chamber and is receiving a terrific response from the Enniscorthy business community. The next Wake Up Wednesday is on 4th October at 7.30am with Guest Speaker Jennie Frizelle. For details on Mental Health and Wellbeing go to www.mentalhealthireland.ie – Maria Nolan

RUBBISH AND ILLEGAL DUMPING IN BEAUTIFUL IRELAND I believe there is one issue that most voters care about more than any other and where politicians can enhance their popularity ratings and that is the subject of litter, rubbish and illegal dumping. In spite of valiant efforts by local authorities, tidy town committees and willing volunteers there is no great improvement visible; if anything it is getting worse. The majority of people are concerned about the scourges of indiscriminate littering and random illegal dumping. A filthy country is a sign of a failure in civic pride and a broader community respect. It is damaging to the national mood and the direct and knock-on costs run into millions of euro. Most people I meet are very critical of the powers that be for not being more pro-active in dealing with the problem. It follows with so many people complaining that it must be only a minority of our people who are guilty of fouling our towns and countryside.
It is a curious fact that we blame the authorities but seldom blame the real culprits – the dirty people that dump and litter. If civic pride is alive and well among the entire population there would be no need for local government to spend so much time cleaning up after us and forced to waste so much of taxpayers’ hard earned money cleaning up dirt that shouldn’t be there in the first place. Fly-tipping of damaged sofas, corroded washing machines and exenterated mattresses is becoming a common spectacle in our fields and roadsides. Illegal dumping has been around for some time but the problem is now reaching a constant stream of
endless quantities in areas of rural Ireland. Of course, it goes without saying that there is more offensive material than old mattresses being dumped. I wouldn’t like to be the council employee that has to deal with some of it – even worse than soiled nappies. I believe public awareness regarding the extent of illegal dumping is reduced because local authorities clear the mess from public gaze. Apparently there is now evidence that local government is having difficulty in getting rid of the heaps of waste and filth. The cost is becoming prohibitive. There is a culture in this country of not paying for serv-
ices exacerbated by the water charges fiasco which some claim is a residue of the free beef days of the 1930s. Of course, people in rural Ireland have been paying for water by providing wells and pumping facilities and group water schemes. Most of our political parties have twisted all over the place on the issue of charges so it could be said that the stink oozing from the dumping in our hedgerows has as much to do with our appalling politics as smelly waste. The problem is crying out for a sustained national campaign with teeth and if necessary imaginative legislation dealing with all aspects of despoiling our towns and
landscapes. The naming and shaming of offenders should be obligatory. We must introduce a legally binding producer responsibility scheme, which exists in many European countries. It will ensure that manufacturers of heavily littered products such as fast food wrapping and drink cans take some financial responsibility for the damage that their products cause to the environment when strewn about the highways and byways. Mr. Denis Naughten, T.D., Minister for Communications, Climate Action and Environment recently stated that, “Illegal dumping is environmental and ecological treason”. I couldn’t agree more and it should prompt his government to get deadly seriously, focused and determined and rid us of the sickening mess that is polluting our beautiful country. The days of pussyfooting with regard to fly-tipping polluters and littering louts is long over. – Seán Doyle
The Polluter Pays Principle is out the window! We are all familiar with the principle: “the polluter pays”, but this is not what actually happens in practice. Only €17,124 was collected by Wexford County Council in littering fines in 2016 which equates to €330 per week. In 2017 the collection rate is running at around €300 per week. It’s obvious that much more needs to be done to discourage the culprits. At the Enniscorthy Municipal District meeting on 18th September local Councillors were strong in their condemnation of littering and fly-tipping with Cllr Paddy Kavanagh stating that it has reached “epidemic proportions”. The extent of the problem shows that the existing deterrents are not strong enough – more people need to be caught and the punishment needs to be greater – the existing regime is simply not working! There is an onus on local and particularly national politicians to unite around this issue and eliminate this problem once and for all. – editor

Enniscorthy sings the Blues As the season of mists and mellow fruitfulnes’ heralded its arrival with Enniscorthy’s annual Blackstairs Blues Festival, the melancholy strains of the mellow Blues wafted from our many hostelries, drinking establishments and inns in what has been one of the most fruitful festivals for the town to date. Sponsored by Heineken Ireland along with Wexford County Council, Catty Town, Enniscorthy Guardian, Enniscorthy Credit Union and many others, this is one of our longest running festivals. Now in its 23rd year it is rivalled only by the Enniscorthy Strawberry Fair and continues to bring fantastic local and international musical talents to our town as well as their many loyal and dedicated followers. Festival organisers, Ibar Carty, Mairead Ennis and John Murphy put a comprehensive programme together for this year’s festival of twenty-nine free live gigs taking place in thirteen different venues around the town with well known musicians from many parts of the globe including the States and the UK as well as many parts of Ireland, and they can be well pleased with the results. To say that the town was rocking would be an understatement, it vibrated and undulated with the Rhythm of the Blues. All types and forms of Blues were heard and enjoyed over the three days, from
Gerry Quigley & Jim Finn Band at Holohans. Pic: Maria Nolan.
Country Blues, Delta and Piedmont to the more Urban varieties of Chicago and West Coast and even some Swamp Blues from a variety of gifted artists like Clive Barnes, Pistol Pete Wearn, Eric Bell Trio, Jackie M c A u l e y Tr i o , H o d R o d Hearse, Stonecold Hobos, Heavy Weather, Kick the Bucket and Benny Blue. My own particular favourites were the classy duo Malkum & Chris who kicked off the festival at the Library on Thursday evening and the Quigley Finn Band who raised the roof at a standing room only event at Holohans on the Saturday night. Malkum & Chris have been playing together and delighting audiences since 1969 with their own special brand of Delta and Piedmont and on
Saturday 9th September they hosted a Blues Workshop at Enniscorthy Castle. The veteran bluesmen on harmonica and steel guitar are musicians and entertainers with stories to match their music which I could have listened to all night along with their fantastic renditions of classic blues like Louise, C`mon If You`re Comin, Warm It Up To Me and Step It Up And Go. These two really have ‘got the Blues’ and have played with the best in the business and have the stories to prove it. I loved their lyrics and the way they interacted with the audiences and really seemed to be enjoying themselves and having a good time. They weren’t just singing the songs they were living them and most properly already have!
Singing drummer Jim Finn from Sydney, Australia, and Dublin blues rock guitar legend, Gerry Quigley, simply owned Holohans on Saturday night as they belted out a captivating collection of powerful Blues music entrancing the packed house and leaving them begging for more. What could be better than that! The 23rd Festival has been a huge success and well done to everyone involved. Our pubs and restaurants were full to capacity, the air pulsated with marvellous music and there was a general aura of excitement and enjoyment on our streets, whatever about Singing the Blues, Enniscorthy certainly wasn’t feeling the blues that weekend. – Maria Nolan
Blackstairs Blues: “Thank You” Off the back of a highly successful 23rd Festival, the Blackstairs Blues Festival committee, John Murphy, Mairead Ennis, Ibar Carty and Sean Doyle would like to extend their gratitude to all the sponsors of the Festival, in particular Heineken and Wexford County Council who have been with us from the beginning. Also a big thanks to all the participating venues. Next year's festival dates will be announced in the coming month. One of this year’s Festival favourites, Gerry Quigley, is returning to the Cathedral town on Saturday 14th of October at 10pm in Holohans, hope to see you there.

Athenaeum Vintage & Variety Pic: Maria Nolan
L-R: Maura Flannery, Liam Doyle and Tom Boland at the recent Vintage Tea Morning in The Athenaeum.
The Athenaeum hosted two charming events last month – a Vintage Tea Morning on Friday 15th September and a Maura Flannery Special Cabaret on Saturday 16th, both in aid of the iconic building and both successful and lovely occasions.
Johnny Mythen, Kathleen Codd Nolan, John Browne representing James Browne and Willie Kavanagh, we even had two visitors from Canada and two from France who just walked in off the street and were greatly impressed with what they found.
On Friday morning at 10.30am the Athenaeum reverberated with the elegant clink of china, the eloquent strains of Nat King Cole and Count John McCormack and wafted with the delicate scent of candles and roses along with the delicious aroma of apple tart, tea brack, warm fruit scones, luscious cream slices and rich fruit cake, as the newly-elected Events Management Committee held its first fundraiser – a Vintage Tea Morning to help defray some of the costs of keeping this historic building at the centre of the town open and viable.
Your presence at our event is greatly appreciated and such was the positive feedback and the requests to repeat the process that we are already planning to host a special Vintage Christmas Athenaeum Tea. So watch this space for details.
And the level of support shown is indicative of the esteem and importance of this special edifice in the hearts of the people of Enniscorthy. Well done to the organising Committee who completely transformed the auditorium with tables dressed in white linen tablecloths, floral displays and bone china teacups and saucers and were looking resplendent themselves Downton Abbey style totally in keeping with the occasion. Thanks to all who attended and supported this most pleasant and lucrative event including Town Manager Liz Hore and her Council staff, AIB Manager Maree Lyng and her staff, Chamber CEO Catriona Murphy and her staff and Chamber members, Castle Manager Moira O`Gorman and staff, the many members of the Delightful Dollies women’s group and many, many members of the general public and some of our public representatives including
Maura Flannery’s eclectic Cabaret Night at the Athenaeum is going from strength to strength. The second in the series on Saturday16th September was well attended and featured a wonderful music mix of old favourites from well known and much loved veteran performer Josie Flood to the youthful blend of the exciting Jamie Murphy and Kerrie Morrissey to the relatively new kid on the block Steven O`Brien with his own tribute to the Strawberry Festival called Last Night at the Fair and everything in between, which included the magnificent and powerful Therese Canavan and the sultry swinging Richie Cotter who did his own version of Bobby McGee and Little Ole Wine Drinker Me, along with Athenaeum Chairman Tony McClean who gave us Ruben James among others and of course the very talented Maura Flannery, Annie Gilpin and music Maestro Pat Donohoe.
Mary Coughlan to perform in New Ross it has been said that Mary Coughlan combines the grief of Billie Holiday, the soul of Van Morrison and the defiance of Edith Piaf. Mary Coughlan’s music career has been a roller coaster, one hell of a ride, and this concert will reflect that. It will feature all the songs that are close to Mary’s heart and life. Mary Coughlan has often been described as the greatest female vocalist and interpreter of songs that Ireland has ever produced. She is unique in blending the whisky-blurred, smoke-seared, husky notes and laconic wit of Billie Holiday and Peggy Lee and the line of deep, down and dirty blues singers back to Bessie Smith with the sardonic, bitter-sweet defiance and despair of Piaf, and Mary Coughlan delivers it all in a delicious and unapologetic Irish drawl, sceptical, rueful,

Cosmic Rebels Con: THE LOCKsMiTH's sONG 5 Oct, Drama, suitable for aged 7+ Set in the dusty world of an old locksmith's shop this tale soon bursts into action and adventure. The audience are brought on a challenging and rewarding journey. This is a story that tells of a love and bond that cannot be broken, that of a mother and her son. This highly visual production mixes puppetry and object manipulation with dynamic physical theatre. Keys and locks sing and dance, shadow puppets float and frighten. All told by Eoin Lynch, one of Ireland’s most experienced performers for young audiences. ––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––– THE sECrET FALL OF CONsTANCE WiLDE 6 Oct, 7 Oct, Drama Traces the hidden life of Constance Lloyd, wife of Oscar Wilde and mother of their children. Her story explores the gender and sexuality of people who `belonged to a future` and untangles the shifting lines in the complex relationship between her, her husband, and his lover, Lord Alfred Douglas. Through a drama of magical transformations and mysterious, masked figures, the play divines the cost of the characters’ conduct, Oscar’s plea for salvation in Constance’s eyes, and her heroic exertion to reclaim a state of grace. ––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––– CLANG sAYNE 8 Oct, Music Dubbed "the most interesting band in Ireland", and a recent favourite of Lyric fm's 'Blue of the Night', Wexford composer/poet, Laura Hyland's Clang Sayne take their cues from sound art, contemporary classical, folksong, avant-pop, and jazz and turn it into something altogether unique. This evening's performance and exhibition celebrates their collaboration with renowned visual artist, David Begley, who has created 7 new monotype images, inspired by the 7 songs from the new album, The Round Soul of the World. ––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––– suE rYNHArT 12 Oct, Music 'Signals' is a collection of new songs by Sue Rynhart. Her songs are both soulful and severe, a fine fusion of the avant-garde and the emotive. “Songs that sound at once ancient and modern, with echoes of folk and early music, contemporary jazz and the avant garde, recalling Theo Bleckmann, Bjork and a hint of Joni Mitchell.” The Irish Times. “Beautiful vocalist...wonderful composition” BBC. it was all glitz, glamour and success at the second year of the South East Radio Hospitality Awards at the Ashdown Park Hotel on 18th September as la crème de la crème of Wexford’s hospitality sector gathered together in large numbers to honour those who go that extra mile to provide the very best of customer service in Co. Wexford. Supported by Wexford Co. Council, the South East Radio Hospitality Awards are made all the more special by the fact that it is the listeners who vote for their favourite pub, restaurant, hotel or tourist attraction. 61 were then shortlisted for the 39 awards with adjudicating panel of Niall Rochford, Ashford Castle, Patrick O’Donoghue, Gleneagle Hotel, Sally Ann Parker, L’Ècrivain Restaurant, celebrity chefs Edward Hayden and Joe Shannon and Johnny
Fitzgibbon making the final deliberations. Master of Ceremonies, South East Radio’s Alan Corcoran, began proceedings by calling on Chairman of Wexford County Council John Hegarty who congratulated all those nominated and complimented them for the massive contribution they all make to the hospitality sector and confirmed that Wexford County Council would be continuing their support of the Hospitality Awards for the next two years. The sell-out black-tie event which began with a Prosecco Frizzante and Ha`penny Gin and Fever Tree Tonic Cocktail Reception, followed by a scrumptious five-course meal including starters of Slow Roast Pork Belly, Goat’s Cheese Tart and Spiced Autumn Vegetable Soup, with Angus Beef and Kilmore Halibut for main course and Belgian

“Enterprise Town” success New Cherryorchard housing An Enniscorthy Enterprise Town event sponsored by Bank of Ireland and designed to showcase the many and varied business enterprises which exist in Enniscorthy took place in the IFA Centre, Mill Park Road, on September 29th. In effect an Enterprise Town event is a community trade fair where it is free to exhibit and free to attend and where the objective of the exercise is to generate business
and to establish business networking in the community. According to Marguerite Murphy, new Bank of Ireland Branch Manager in Enniscorthy, feedback from Enterprise Town events has shown that “people connect with people and businesses that up until now they didn’t know existed”. 40 stand holders were accommodated at the event which also featured a motivational talk on health and well-

Attendees enjoyed music and sporting entertainment throughout the evening with popular guests including Wexford hurler Liam Ryan. Bank of Ireland branch manager in Enniscorthy, Marguerite Murphy, and her BOI team, together with the local committee consisting of Jimmy Gahan, Michael Bennett, Barrie Sutton, Eugene Doyle and Connie Doyle, are to be congratulated on the success of this event. n

The official signing of contracts for the new Cherryorchard housing project in Enniscorthy took place on 1st September, 2017, in The Presentation Centre. Back row L-R: Ken Jones (Wexford Co. Council), Cllr John O’Rourke, Cllr Willie Kavanagh, John Carley (Wexford Co. Council), James Browne TD. Front row L-R: Padraig O’Gorman (Wexford Co. Council), Garry Sinnott (Kilcavan Property Developments Ltd), Cllr Keith Doyle, Cllr Kathleen Codd Nolan.
A new housing project will be located near the Ross Road/Gort na Greine roundabout in Enniscorthy. The project will involve the construction of eight houses and associated site works. Four
will be semi-detached, threebed, two-storey houses, and four will be semi-detached bungalows (two three-bed and two two-bed). The bungalows will be special needs and have been designed following rec-
ommendations from occupational therapists. These houses will be built to the highest standards with a proposed Building Energy Rating of A3. Work commenced on site on 18th September. n
Vinegar Hill – top priority Vinegar Hill was certainly on e v e r y o n e ’s m i n d a t t h e Enniscorthy Municipal District (EMD) Council meeting of 18th September particularly with the recent archaeological project putting Vinegar Hill centrestage when it comes to Irish battlefields. Council officials confirmed that a full-time person was now in place as a caretaker working between Vinegar Hill and the town’s Country Walk along by the Slaney.
Also there will be a book published next year – the 220th anniversary, about the recent findings on Vinegar Hill and a conference will take place also. Cllr Mythen was keen to have Vinegar Hill designated in some way to ensure its complete protection. Cllr Paddy Kavnagh was in favour of its protection also but felt that the locals living and farming there should be consulted. New EMD Chairman, Cllr Keith Doyle, said that Vinegar
Hill would be “top of my agenda” and he promptly offered to put his Chairman’s Allowance (around €7,000) into supporting the staging of the Vinegar Hill re-enactment in 2018. EMD Manager, Liz Hore, said that she was fully supportive of safeguards and improvements on Vinegar Hill and that the recent research now provides the scientific information needed to help secure financial support for the site. n
Mythen waste management motion passed by Council Fianna Fáil on the ball!
National Regulator vital to protect Public Interest” – Cllr Johnny Mythen. On 11th September, Wexford County Council passed Cllr Johnny Mythen’s motion in relation to waste management… “That this council calls on Minister Naughten to stop these new waste management proposals, to establish a national regulator, introduce more measures to reduce, reuse, and recycle waste. To establish substantive measures to protect families on F.I.S., old age pensioners, citizens with medical conditions, and those on social welfare payments and minimum wage, from the impending increases that will come about because of these new waste management proposals.” According to Cllr Mythen: “The establishing of a national regulator to oversee the waste management industry is vital to the protection of public interest. There is a clear and present danger of Cartel-ism or oligopolies (companies with limited competition) forming from the current pro-
Cllr Johnny Mythen
posals similar to the car insurance industry. “The imminent increases in charges by this new waste management regime which will be coming on stream in the autumn justifies the creation of a National Regulator. “Large families, old age pensioners, people with disabilities, and those on the minimum wage will bear the financial brunt and be at the mercy of a small group of operators. “For instance, new-born babies require up to 12 nappy changes a day, and adults with incontinence would fill a bin in 2 to 3 days alone. The
current proposed allowance for adults with disabilities is €1.56 (per week). “Another anomaly arises out of the use of black bag tags. People living alone and O.A.P.s living in a 2-3 storey block of flats using the black bag tags, what happens to this system? There are no established dispensations for the above cohort of people apart from 22 cent a day for citizens with disabilities. “The Government must be responsible for the regulation of the waste management system. “The free market will be driven by pure revenue, and rural communities will be the first to fall under the impending increases, especially those at the end of long distance routes. “We must open up the debate about the return of waste management to public services and local authorities because it is the only way to safeguard our environment and guarantee proper price control and proper recycling facilities into the future.” n

ENNISCORTHY CREDIT UNION hosted a Phelim Byrne Cookery demonstration for students on 19th September at the Riverside Park Hotel. Phelim cooked some great recipes which were both nutritious and convenient to make whilst also being good value on a tight budget. The large audience was very appreciative of his presentation and of the volunteer assistant chefs, Madison O’Neill and Aoife Doyle. A raffle of the food cooked by Phelim and a meat voucher provided by the credit union resulted in Angela O’Leary winning the first prize.

Distillery project Enniscorthy’s Hogan Print expands still very much alive Slaney Farms Produce Ltd has applied to Wexford Co. Council for planning permission to build a distillery and visitor centre at its premises in Tomnalossett, Enniscorthy. The application also seeks permission for car-parking, the erection of a potato cold storage shed, a waste water and sewerage treatment plant and all ancillary site works.
The company was prviously linked with purchasing the 1798 Centre for its proposed distillery but this option is no longer being pursued by the company. If granted planning permission for the Tomnalossett distillery project, this no doubt, would be a major boost for both local employment and local tourism.
Treacy’s Hotel to get 26 new bedrooms Treacy's Hotel in Templeshannon, Enniscorthy, is seeking to expand once again. Not long after acquiring and renovating additional accommodation nearby in Railway Square, Treacy’s has now received permission from Wexford Co. Council to add a 26-bedroom extension to the rear of the main hotel premises. A number of concerns were
expressed to the Council from local people but permission has now been granted subject to certain conditions. This new extension follows a number of recent extensions at the other main hotel in town - the Riverside Park Hotel and is indicative of the steady growth in tourism in Enniscorthy and Co. Wexford as a whole in recent years. n

Live Register drops in Co. Wexford Last month it was announced that there are 2,188 fewer people on the Live Register in Co. Wexford compared to this time last year, a 16% drop. Nationally, the number of people signing on the Live Register last month fell to the lowest level since September 2008. Local TD and Minister, Paul Kehoe, welcoming the news said: “Since the Action Plan for Jobs was launched in February 2012, the number signing on has decreased locally by 40% or 7,820 people in Wexford. “Statistics can seem meaningless but this has a real impact on communities all

On the occasion of the handing over of the keys, George Lawlor took the opportunity to thank all his loyal customers over the past 22 years for their support and was confident that Hogan Print would continue to offer the same quality service from the same location. So for all your printing needs, contact Hogan Print at 56A Wafer Street, Enniscorthy on 053-9234359, 087-2385232 (Joe), sales@hoganprint.com. “We are committed to rewarding work and encouraging enterprise and ensuring all parts of Ireland share prosperity and economic growth.” In addition, the CSO said the number of persons signing on the Live Register in August is down 51,762 or 16.4% on the same time last year. In August the unemployment rate fell to 6.3%. E m p l o y m e n t h a s g ro w n strongly since the jobless rate peaked at 15.2% in 2012. Sheriff executes warrant In an operation conducted on 25th September 2017, a well-known retail premises on Main Street Wexford narrowly avoided having its goods seized in an action taken by the County Sheriff on behalf of Wexford County Council. Court officers called to “Eurosaver” shop at 21-23 North Main Street Wexford and demanded the handover of all stock on foot of a Warrant of Execution, following a longrunning court action by Wexford County Council against the operators of the shop for failure to pay commercial rates. Yong Chen and Hong Chen are listed as Directors of DSC Import Company Ltd
which had been operating the discount store for some time, and the court action by the Council sought payment of commercial rates totalling more than €12,000. Following failure by the Company to pay, the Council obtained the court warrant authorising seizure of goods at the premises. The seizure of goods was avoided however, when the Company made payment to the Sherriff of the Rates due, together with an additional payment in respect of the associated costs. Commenting on this opera t i o n , We x f o r d C o u n t y Council Communications Officer David Minogue was keen to point out that the vast

majority of the county’s commercial rates customers make every effort to meet their financial obligations. “The cost of unpaid rates is effectively met by those customers who do pay” said Mr. Minogue. “The Council would be failing in its duty to these customers were it not to use all of the powers available to it to ensure payment of commercial rates. Wexford Co. Council does not take this type of action lightly but it is essential that all Council income, including commercial rates is secured so we can continue to drive forward the development of the county and to provide essential services to the people of Wexford”. n

A sad reflection…
More dogs were collected by the Co. Wexford Dog Warden than in any other county in Ireland in the period January 2010 to the end of 2015 – a sad reflection on our county. In 2016 a total of 1,106 dogs were collected (including one exceptional animal hoarding situation accounting for 239 dogs), 122 of which were recaimed, 717 rehomed or transferred, and 171 put to sleep. 25 fines were issued.

VET DIARY FOR OCT
with the Moyne Veterinary Hospital This month, Joe Kavanagh looks at ‘Energy Medicine’. In our modern day lives life seems to run at a pretty furious rate... work, school, gym, quick bite to eat, sleep and start it all over again. Meanwhile our bodies take all the stresses and strains and invariably absorb the 'hits' day after day of the fast lifestyle, less than perfect diets and less and less down time. When we get a pain... say in our shoulder, knee or back, we reach for some quick fix tablets so we can keep motoring on, instead of starting to listen to our body and what it might be telling us. For me these pains and aches are the early warning signs that the body is struggling or that something is out of alignment. Looking at this pain as being like a red light on in the dashboard of a car.... telling us there's something up and beginning to delve a little deeper to help restore the problem is what energy medicine is all about. The principle is the very same for both animals and humans... if the body is out of kilter there is a 'road block' somewhere in the energy pathways in the system. This might seem like stating the obvious but establishing where that blockage is and restoring it is where the skill comes in. In conventional medicine we tend to look at the symptoms and address these helping the body to come back to health. In the 'acute' or 'accident & emergency' cases this is where modern medicine is in its element. Where it struggles, in my opinion, is with the more chronic problems, the long term illnesses or more insidious ones that don't have any major symptoms other than say lethargy, poor appetite, off form... Diet plays a big part in all of this and the old adage that 'you are what you eat' is very true. Sometimes this is enough to turn a patient around but sometimes it's rooted deeper. Figuring out and helping to find these deeper seated problems is where 'complimentary' or energy medicine can help. The premise is to help remove the 'road blocks' in the system and the body will heal itself. The length of time the condition has been going on influences how quickly you might see a response in the animal. The remedies are usually natural and very gentle on the body helping the dis-ease back to perfect ease. n

A local contributor looks at life today in Enniscorthy and beyond Judges’ pay I see that our friends the learned judges are having difficulty making ends meet on their meagre pay packets. According to their own spokespeople some of them are almost on the breadline. My heart really goes out to the poor divils. Imagine being expected to live on €2,134 per week if you are a district court judge or €2,442 per week as a judge of the circuit court or €3,250 as a high court judge or even €3,425 as a supreme court judge. On top of that of course there are the usual expenses for travel, meals and overnight etc. and the judges of the higher courts actually get allowances for their legal libraries. They get help in purchasing their wigs and cloaks to ensure that the noble tradition of being different from ordinary mortals is maintained. The lads on the higher courts also have fellows they call tipstaffs going round with them who drive their cars in case the learned one gets tired after a day’s toil on the bench. These tipstaffs carry a stick and walk in front of the distinguished judges as they traverse from their chambers (office to you and me) in one end of the court building to the other. The tipstaff will do anything for his or her master or mistress (well almost).
The time has come for these self- important few to be brought down in to the real world. Anyone who has reason to go into any of the higher courts will be nauseated at the bowing and scraping which goes on there every day of the week. A particularly annoying feature of all this relates to the fact that these are the people passing judgement on the rest of us. The question must arise as to how someone living in that privileged world can put himself or herself in the boots of the typical citizen of this country. For instance how can a judge of the district court , who apparently can’t live on over two grand a week, pass a judgement regarding an unpaid debt in relation to either a struggling small business or a debtor on a very low income. Every day of the week we read of these judgements, which can destroy a person or a business, being handed down by these judges. Our Irish judges are amongst the highest paid in the world and should be told in no uncertain terms by the government to take a hike or go elsewhere to carry out their judging. Mortgage approvals The banks and other financial institutions are falling over them-
tion for Leader of Fine Gael Simon Coveney trounced him in the ballot of the membership and Leo was only saved by the Oireachtas members and councillors. Now Mary Lou McDonald is well able to look after herself but some of Leo’s advisors or colleagues should tell him that this attitude will get him or Fine Gael no brownie points from the general public.
Pic: ©Joseph Doyle
View from the Hill selves to tell us that there is a very healthy increase in the number of mortgage application approvals this year. The main purpose of this message is of course to indicate that all is returning to normal in the economy and that those seeking to purchase a property will be looked after. However when examined closely the story is a little different. Mortgage application approvals actually mean very little. The reality is that many of the approvals have such stringent conditions attached that they will never be drawn down. Also there could be any number of approvals in relation to one particular property.
Therefore we can take such announcements with a pinch of salt. leo varadkar Our nearly new Taoiseach seems to have adopted the art of answering questions in the Dail by insulting the questioner. Twice , at least, recently he has responded to reasonable questions from Mary Lou McDonald of Sinn Fein by deliberating insulting her before giving a feeble reply to the actual question she had asked. Maybe he thinks that this will go down well with the general membership of his own party which does not actually support him. In the elec-
pensions The issue of Contributory Old Age Pensions savagely cut by Labour’s Joan Burton when she was Minister for Social Protection simply refuses to go away. Every week more and more elderly people are discovering that because of the sleight of hand of the bould socialist Joan when they apply for their pensions that they will receive a much lower amount than the standard payment which is paltry enough. Councillor Michael Sheehan of New Ross is the only standard bearer pensioners in Co. Wexford seem to have. He has relentlessly pursued this issue for months now and will not let go. At the recent Kennedy Summer School in New Ross he attended a meeting at which Joan Burton and the present Minister Regina Doherty were speakers. Sheehan raised
the issue and Doherty replied that everything was in the mix as far as pensions were concerned. What this means we will have to wait and see. More interestingly Michael Sheehan asked Joan Burton did she recognise now that her cuts were a mistake and grossly unfair to people who had worked hard all their lives and had and still contribute greatly to this country. He further asked her if she would apologise to those she had deprived of a full pension. Joan refused on both counts and maintained that she had done the correct thing. I think that, more than anything else, sums up the attitude of the official Labour Party and explains why they are only at, and I daresay will remain at, 5% in the polls. They have learned nothing. They should bear in mind that it is no shame to admit that they got this wrong. If they do that maybe people would look at them differently. In the meantime the story of the pensions will go on and one Michael Sheehan will be dogged in his pursuit of the restoration of Joan’s pension cuts. n We are often asked: Who is the “View from the Hill” columnist? All we can say is that the author’s surname is NOT Doyle!

Caroline gets motoring
opel insignia grand sporT review by Caroline Kidd
the opel insignia has held its own well against the likes of the Ford Mondeo and the vo l k s w a g e n p a s s a t i n ireland, being a particular hit among fleet buyers and those seeking a large family hatchback. an all-new model, now dubbed the opel insignia grand sport, went on sale here over the summer. The ‘Grand Sport’ moniker implies that the new Opel Insignia has grown-up a bit and matured into something more niche and exclusive. But with pricing starting from €27,350, any notions the new Opel Insignia Grand Sport might have are at least not reflected in the pricing. The new Opel Insignia Grand Sport is actually a longer car than the outgoing Insignia. It’s an imposing car in the metal but there is a coupélike elegance to the new design. Inside there is more of a limousine feel than the old car, and this is most noticeable in the back where rear legroom has been significantly improved. Despite the coupé-like styling, headroom in the back is not bad at all either, while three can sit in reasonable comfort. The hatchback style boot reveals a 490 litre boot. In my opinion, large enough to get lost in.

opel Insignia Grand Sport
Grand by name but grand by nature? At least from the driver’s seat, the new Opel Insignia Grand Sport car feels every inch the grand tourer. The driver now sits lower and feels more integrated with the car, while the brand new interior wraps around the driver. The design is much improved, with a sleek look centred around the Intellilink infotainment system in the centre of the dash. The new Insignia is also available with a wide range of technology, driving aids a n d p re m i u m f e a t u re s depending on trim level, including the Opel OnStar
assistance service, a digital instrument panel, heads-up display, Apple CarPlay/ Android Auto, LED matrix headlights, Bose sound system, AGR ergonomic seats, traffic sign recognition, lane change assist with side blind spot alert and lane keep assist. The Insignia Grand Sport range is extensive with four trim levels, a number of petrol and diesel engines, manual and automatic gearboxes and even four wheel drive. Standard equipment includes Opel OnStar, air con, cruise control, 7” touchscreen with Apple Car Play and Android Auto projection, 17” alloys
and keyless entry and start. SRi and SE start at €29,350, with SRi featuring more sporty features like rear spoiler and front sports seats. Elite models (from €31,595) have leather trim and Intellilux LED matrix headlights. Power for the range comes from a new 1.5-litre (140hp) turbo petrol unit, the 1.6-litre diesel (110 or 136hp) and the 2.0-litre diesel (170hp). Both the 1.6-litre (136hp) and 2.0litre (170hp) units are available with both manual and automatic transmission. The Opel Insignia Grand Sport sits on a new chassis and though the overall car is big-

ger, it has lost up to 175kg of body weight. On the road it still feels like a large car but there is a deftness to the steering that makes it more than adequate in the handling stakes. It’s still not particularly sporty but in terms of comfort and refinement, this is a fine car for munching up the motorway miles. Under the bonnet, my test car was powered by the 2.0litre 170 hp diesel carried over from the previous model. The performance of this engine is very impressive with 400Nm of torque and a squeeze of the accelerator in any gear yields swift progress.
Opel has bolstered insulation and wind noise is nonexistent, but there is still some diesel gurgle finding its way into the cabin. Opel has enhanced the kerb appeal of the new Insignia Grand Sport and the makeover inside and out will make the new car a compelling choice on dealer forecourts. In terms of technology, the new Insignia can be had with an impressive list of features, but this can quickly move the car up into premium price territory. The ride comfort and refinement of the car is truly impressive, while the 2.0-litre diesel will not leave you wanting for power. The Opel Insignia never grows tired as a good companion for the road, and now comes with added prestige. Model tested: Opel Insignia Grand Sport 2.0 170hp Turbo D Elite. Price: €36,095 (range starts at €27,350). Engine: 2.0-litre turbo diesel. Power: 170hp. Torque: 400Nm. 0-100km/h: 8.9 seconds. Top speed: 226km/h. Economy: 54 mpg. CO2 emissions: 136g/km. Olde Worlde Weekend at Wells Pic: Maria Nolan.
There was a wonderful ‘olde worlde’ ambience at Wells House in September as the Wolseley Car Club of Ireland had a pit stop at the historic residence as part of their twenty-second annual rally. The architecturally aesthetic facade of Wells provided the perfect backdrop for the thirty classic, pristine vintage cars from england and twenty-five from Ireland arrayed on the front lawn as occupants took the opportunity to avail of the fabulous ‘fayre’ on offer at the excellent Wells restaurant. – Maria Nolan.

Wexford td, Minister paul kehoe says that new figures from the central statistics office (cso) which show a 14% drop in the cost of motor insurance is good news for Wexford motorists. cso figures show the cost of motor insurance was broadly steady in the month of august, but is now down 14% compared with the same month a year ago. Minister Kehoe said: “This is undoubtedly good news,
but there is more work to be done for motorists here in Wexford. “While this 14% decrease is encouraging we realise that costs still remain high and there is much more work to do to make motor insurance affordable for people across Ireland. “Fine Gael recognises that it is possible for the State to play a role in helping to stabilise the market and deal with factors contributing to the cost of
insurance. For this reason we established the Cost of Insurance Working Group in 2016. “The initial focus of the Working Group was the issue of rising motor insurance costs and its Report on the Cost of Motor Insurance was published in January 2017. “There is a commitment within the Report that the Working Group will prepare quarterly updates on its progress and the first such
update was published in early May… As everybody is aware, the cost of motor insurance is an important issue that has a significant impact on society as a whole. “Motor insurance is , after all, an essential requirement for daily living and this decrease shows us that the measures introduced by the Government to lower insurance costs are, slowly beginning to work,” Minister Kehoe said. n

Michael cusack, the founder of the gaelic athletic association, once wrote, ‘We never heard sweeter music than that of the hurling field’ and in the aftermath of the all ireland hurling Final, every galway man, woman and child knows exactly what he meant. As a neutral lucky enough to secure a ticket I sat at the very back of the Upper Cusack Stand and savoured every moment of what is the most special occasion on the Irish calendar. And that is not to take from the Football All Ireland but there is something more ancient, more mythical, more magical, more primordial and more inherent about the All Ireland Hurling Final. As I looked down from my much sought after seat high in the Upper Cusack over the magnificent Coliseum style arena, the lines between legend, history and sport blurred as we watched thirty warriors go to battle in the footsteps of Cú Chulainn, not for any monetary or personal gain but for the honour and glory of their family, their county, their own people and their own little patch of Ireland. And that’s what makes it special and unique.

Great action shot from the all Ireland Hurling Final by Maria Nolan.
In the footsteps of Cú Chulainn Over 80,000 people collectively entranced, lost in time and wonder, anticipating every move, hurling every ball and feeling every pain of the sporting marvel unfolding before them. Appreciating, admiring and awed by the stealth, skill and ballet-like elegance of these amateur players digging deep within themselves to unearth an unknown innate quality that courses through their veins and produces an allegiance and a dedication that no money can buy, making the game of
hurling a spectacle among spectacles. To quote Joe Canning when asked why he plays the game he said, ‘To make my mam and dad proud’. It’s as simple as that. An inborn, almost inexplicable pride in who we are and where we come from, and an enigmatic desire to elevate our own people, whether it be clan, club or county. Man and ash rising as one entity from the soil and the people that begot them, driven by an ancient
purpose to prove that they and their tribe are the best, if only for that one moment in time. And Sunday 3rd September was Galway’s moment in time, one that the Tribesmen will treasure for many years to come even if they win several more All Ireland titles. The writing was on the wall at half time with the wonderful video tribute to the former Galway hurler Tony Keady who passed away less than a month ago. Victory would and should be theirs, the Script had been written high up somewhere among the clouds. Hurling is not just a game, it’s who we are, it’s about clan, it’s about blood, it’s about remembering those who have gone before us, it’s about history and beyond. Watching Joe Canning hug Tony Keady’s daughter, Shannon, after the final whistle and stand with Tony’s wife for the Cup presentation and shed tears of joy with his own mam and dad, said it all. This is about standing proud and happy in your own place among your own people. Can there be a better feeling? I think not. If in any doubt just ask any Galway player! – Maria Nolan

Mary told the large gathering of family and friends that she has never written as much since moving to Tincurry six years ago and at sixty-five feels that her writing life is in a process of change or metamorphosis, with Cusp being the pupa stage of the emerging butterfly. Mary’s poems, warmly written and beautifully delivered on the night, are memories of the heart, of childhood, family, friends, neighbours, her hometown and ‘the ways things were’, nicely dispersed with some Wexford flavoured fayre like At The Harrow and Crow Pie. One of my particular favourites is the poem Cusp which refers to that time ‘Before the turn of the year’, that time between Christmas and the New Year which Mary eloquently describes as a time before ‘The new and raw and awesome, of what hasn’t come, is waiting in the shadows.’ This could actually be describing Mary’s own work at the moment as this awesome lady advances happily along her path of discovery who knows what is waiting in the shadows of her talent. – Maria Nolan

Cursed Murphy’s Laboratory Enniscorthy’s Peter Murphy – well known as an author, spokenword performer, actor, broadcaster, etc is organising a series of three monthly events that will happen this winter at Wexford Arts Centre. Peter says, “I’m looking for artists, established and emerging, from all disciplines, to participate in a series of public performances curated by myself. That means musicians, painters, writers, composers, filmmakers, actors, photographers, spoken word artists, sculptors, dancers, prosthetic experts, spontaneous human combustion specialists – you name it. The accent is on trying things you might never otherwise get to try in a public forum, with a definite bias towards collaboration. This will be as much a social event as an opportunity for experimentation and interdisciplinary adventure. It will be entertaining, edgy, surprising and exciting.” So if you’re a Wexford-related artist of any age, background, creed, race or disposition, drop a line asap to cursedmurphylaboratory@gmail.com and outline your expression of interest. The first event will take place on Friday, November 17th, at Wexford Arts Centre.

Wexford Festival Opera goes Yes to Health! No to Drugs! by Alice McLoughlin GREEN! Wexford Festival opera goers are being encouraged to wear a touch of green this year to symbolise how even small changes can help protect the environment. The Green Carpet will be laid out for patrons of Wexford Festival Opera on Wednesday, 1 November as the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) comes together with Wexford Festival Opera to highlight the environment. The Festival and the EPA introduced the Green Carpet Night event last year and it was met with an overwhelming response from the audience and volunteers. The initiative invites opera-goers on the night to make a small, symbolic change to their attire, signifying a commitment to making ‘small changes’ in their lives to help the environment. The message is that small
changes can make a great difference, so people are encouraged to make a small change to their opera-wear that evening, such as a green bow-tie, a green piece of jewellery, a green pocket square, green shoes, green nail varnish; the possibilities are endless! Patrons will also enter that night via a green carpet at the front entrance of the National Opera House, which will be bathed in green light. The EPA’s headquarters
are based in Johnstown Castle Estate, Wexford and the agency has been part of the local community for the last 24 years. It has worked with Wexford Festival Opera for many years through various EPA-led initiatives to raise awareness on a variety of environmental issues such as how we can all make choices about how we heat our homes; how we consume water and how we manage our wastes. n
yes to health! No to drugs! is the title of alice Mcloughlin’s latest publication aimed at children in the 10-13 year age bracket. this colourful, attractive, and highly readable book informs about the dangers of drug and alcohol abuse in sensible, clear, and direct language. it also sets out to inspire children to choose positive activities and celebrate their individuality. yes to health! No to drugs! is beautifully illustrated with eye-catching, vibrant artwork by the Wexford based artist, Mirona Mara. Alice, a psychotherapist in private practice in Curracloe, felt that while there was a great deal of literature available for teenagers, warning them about the perils of drug and alcohol abuse, there was a serious gap in the market for such material for primary school children. Alice, a native of south Kilkenny, spent 11 years working directly in addiction treat-

ment in the Aiseiri centres in Cahir, Co. Tipperary, and in Wexford. It was, however, her experience of going to St. Joseph’s primary school, New Ross, over the last twenty years to speak with 6th class about the harm caused by drug and alcohol misuse that convinced her of the need for a children’s book, which could reach a wider audience. Teachers, parents, youth club leaders, scout and girl guide
leaders, and counsellors will all find this book very helpful to their work. Even more importantly, children will find in Yes to Health! No to Drugs! a book that speaks their language. Make healthy choices, she enthuses, express your uniqueness in creative and positive ways, embrace the joyful, affirming possibilities that life offers in abundance. Avoid drugs and alcohol that often lead to poor school performance, great personal unhappiness, and dangerous behaviours with horrible consequences. Yes to Health! No to Drugs! will be launched by Marion Rackard, addiction expert with HSE, daughter of Wexford hurler Nicky Rackard, at Wexford Library on October 10th at 7pm. All are welcome. Yes to Health! No to Drugs! is published by Createspace and is available directly from the author by visiting her website www.alicemcloughlin.com n
