CounCil to use CCtV and drone Footage in litter CraCkdown!

over the coming months, wexford County Council will be implementing “operation spota dubh”, an anti-dumping initiative which targets litter and waste black-spots throughout Co. wexford. The Council will be focusing its attention on these areas and others during the course of the operation, including surveying with drones and installing CCTV surveillance cameras to monitor for any illegal waste activities. The Council promises to take strong and swift enforcement action against any people caught on camera littering or dumping. The initiative aims to raise awareness of the damaging effects of litter and waste pollution on County Wexford each year, which not only destroys the local environment but costs the people of County Wexford more than €2.7 million in clean-up costs.

Wexford County Council reminds the public of the availability of state-of-the-art household recycling centres in the four main towns in the county where a wide range of materials can be recycled. These include electrical items, cardboard, books, magazines, metals, florescent lights, tetra pak cartons, textiles and batteries. In addition, the Council has developed a network of over 110 community recycling facilities in towns and villages throughout the County for the collection of glass bottles, jars and drink cans. The Litter Pollution Act 1997-2009 provides for fines from €150 to €4,000 for littering offences so Dumpers Beware - You Will Be Caught On Camera! Operation Spota Dubh is supported by the Department of Communications, Climate Action and the Environment (DCCAE). n

THE SLANEY NEWS IS NOW AVAILABLE IN 230 OUTLETS!

comment It may still only be the beginning of November but in this issue we highlight just some of the events and entertainment Enniscorthy has to offer this Christmas – see pages 1819. There’s lots to keep us all amused, young and old, over the Christmas period. In addition to socialising close to home this Christmas we should all try and shop close to home too. The economic future of Enniscorthy and the future employment of a lot of our young people depends largely on the retail/services sector so local spending benefits us all in the long run. One way to spend a bit more locally is to buy and use Enniscorthy Gift Vouchers which are available from various locations in town such as Byrne’s Bookshop, Enniscorthy Credit Union, Frizelle O’Leary & Co. Solicitors, Enniscorthy Chamber, in €10 and €20 units, or directly from www.enniscorthygiftvoucher.ie. The vouchers are great gifts for birthdays, anniversaries etc and, of course, for Christmas. They can be spent in over 70 local businesses. And for employers – they are a great, tax-efficient way to reward employees. – Frank Corcoran

Your IdentItY Is Yours. Here’s How to Keep It tHat waY. Have you ever been out with friends, had a little too much to drink, and left your credit card in a bar? It may seem like losing these items is just an inconvenience, but the reality is that simple slip-ups like these can spell disaster for you and your family. Stolen credit, social or other ID cards are just a couple of the ways identity thieves can invade your personal life, dealing major blows to your finances and even your reputation. The culprits behind identity theft can be anyone from family, friends, and neighbours to sophisticated cybercriminals. how to protect yourself from identity theft? we can give you a few tips on how to be safer with your identity: • Don’t send or receive private data over unsecured Wi-Fi networks or in public spaces. • Keep personal data encrypted when stored on devices. • Safely store (or destroy) physical documents that contain your private information, from credit cards to mail. • Freeze your credit. It sounds scary, but it isn’t. Freezing your score makes it harder for a criminal to open a new credit card account or take out a loan in your name. The Banking and payment federation Ireland provides details on their website. • Know your credit score. There are many free services that help you keep track of your credit score, and make sure nothing phishy is going on. • Make sure all your devices are installed with up-to-date cybersecurity that protects you from all known threats in real-time. what if i’ve been a victim of identity theft? The Garda National Economic Crime Bureau (GNECB) can be useful to help you repair the damage and recover from identity theft. The task may seem daunting, but at the end of the day, your identity is yours—and it should stay yours. Ferns Computer Services has been in business in Ferns since May 2007. established by David pohludek, it has a huge clientele base all over Co. wexford and beyond.

Slaney News

Enniscorthy Tidy Towns Report – a lot done, more to do! a record number of 870 towns and villages across ireland entered the national tidy towns Competition in 2017, and the good news is that enniscorthy secured a bronze medal – a wonderful achievement. In fact, Enniscorthy scored a total of 303 marks out of a possible 450 which is six marks more than 2016, which in turn was four marks more than in 2015, which in turn was five more than the previous year. So the trend is very definitely upwards. The overall national winner was the village of Birdhill in Co. Tipperary with a score of 332 so there is still plenty of opportunity for

Enniscorthy to improve and hopefully secure a silver medal next year. The adjudicator concludes: “We have no doubt that the work carried out by the Tidy Towns group in Enniscorthy is positive and we hope it reinvigorates the community pride and more residents and businesses will be encouraged to get involved and play their part. As a first-time visitor to Enniscorthy we found your town welcoming and it was enjoyable to spend a day exploring your streets and riverside walkway.” So there’s a lot to be proud of in the report, well done to all involved particularly Enniscorthy Tidy Towns com-

mittee and volunteers, and Enniscorthy Municipal District and its staff. –––––––––––––––––––––––––– howeVer not eVerything in the report is rosy. we asked sean doyle, seCretary/ treasurer oF ennisCorthy tidy town a s s o C i at i o n F o r h i s thoughts, whiCh we reproduCe hereunder: We improved our position by 6 marks which is encouraging. Our weakest category is S u s t a i n a b l e Wa s t e a n d Resource Management where we received only 30% of the total marks available. We are still doing badly under the heading Tidiness and Litter

Control. We are in Category E, which is for towns of a population from 5,000 to 10,000. Westport was the winner in Category E, with 331 marks which is 28 more marks than Enniscorthy with 303. Actually, we beat Westport under two headings Community Involvement and Planning and Residential Streets and Housing Areas. Westport had significantly higher marks than Enniscorthy under the titles Tidiness and Litter Control, Approach Roads, Streets and Lanes. The Adjudicator specifically mentioned the following in his Enniscorthy Report – Dereliction, Cigarette Butts

in Rafter Street and Market Square, Dog Fouling, Overflowing Bin, Paving at the Fair Green in need of a good sweeping. Road surface markings faint in places, Bollards and Railings along the Quay in need of a coat of paint, a Gable End in Abbey Square in need of embellishment and the façade of Slaney Suites would benefit from painting. With a sustained effort from all involved, Tidy Town Committee and its Social Employment Scheme and dedi c a t e d Vo l u n t e e r s , t h e Enniscorthy District Council and its resources and committed staff, there should be no

stopping the town from dramatically improving its marks and reaching the top within a few short years. We are aware of the problems and they should not be beyond the ingenuity of man or woman to resolve the criticisms pointed out by various adjudicators over the years; and they are inclined to be repeated year after year. It also essential for householders and businesses to become more involved in moving their attractive town forward in the Tidy Town stakes. – Seán Doyle Secretary/Treasurer enniscorthy Tidy Town Association

St Aidan’s school installs defibrillator and trains staff

Beneath My Angels Wings is an organisation which supports families who have lost children. It is holding a Memorial Service in St. Aidan’s Cathedral on 26th November at 7pm. All are welcome.

Footprints in the sands of time at the eleventh hour, on the eleventh day of the eleventh month, enniscorthy historical re-enactment society will hold a series of events to commemorate armistice day and remember and honour all those from enniscorthy and wexford who served in the great war. At eleven o clock on 11th November 1918 the Armistice was signed between the Allied and German Armies at Compiegne, France officially bringing to an end WW1 hostilities on the Western Front, and every year since then commemorations have been held in many countries around the world at that time on that day. Over 800 Wexford men were killed in the Great War, from August 1914 right up to Armistice Day itself when Nicholas Sane from Rowe Street, Wexford was killed in France. Approximately sixty-four Enniscorthy men lost their lives in the war to end wars and the names include Berry, Bishop, Bolger, Breen, Brien, Brooks, Brown, Byrne, Connors, Conroy, Copeland, Cosgrave, Cullen, Delaney, Devereux, Dobbs, Doyle, Dunne, Dwyer, Forrestal, Goode, Gorman, Harris, James, Jones, Jordan, Kavanagh, Kelly, Kirwan, Lacey, Loughlin, McClean, McDonald, Mahon, Mernagh, Merriman, Murphy, Nolan, Henry, Neill, O`Shea, Prendergast, Quirke, Redmond, Roche, Sinnott, Sunderland, Thorpe, Toole,

The Board of Management of St. Aidan's Primary School, Enniscorthy, recently installed a defibrillator in the school. Eight members of staff (pictured above with Mr. Peter Creedon (Principal) and Paddy Redmond (Red Cross) have been trained in the use of the defibrillator by the Irish Red Cross. Hopefully it will never need to be used but it's reassuring to know it's there and staff are qualified to use it in the event of a medical emergency.

Walsh and Whelan. 2018 will mark the one hund re d a n n i v e r s a r y o f t h e Armistice and major commemorations will be staged all over the world next year. Very little, if anything, has ever been done in Enniscorthy to mark the momentous occasion and to remember those who fought and died from the town. We would love to see their photographs, read their letters and hear their stories. If you would like to share a memory of your family member in the Great War please c o n t a c t u s a t m a r ianolan007@gmail.com or facebook Enniscorthy Historical Re-enactment Society. This year`s Armistice Day ceremonies will begin with a laying of a wreath at St. Mary’s

Church, Enniscorthy at 10.30am followed by a ceremony at Market Square to mark the 99th anniversary of the Armistice. From 11.30am to 5pm EHRS will be hosting a Living History display at the Athenaeum, with re-enactors, WW1 artefacts and demonstrations. The Day of Remembrance will culminate with a special concert - March Away My Brothers - a medley of Irish soldiers’ stories and music by Brendan Mac Quaile at 7pm at the Athenaeum. All are welcome, please come out to remember these brave men who left their hometown almost one hundred years ago to fight in the Great War and leave their footprints in the sands of time. – Maria Nolan

Plaque unveiled the enniscorthy Commemoration Committee recently unveiled restoration work which was carried out on the grave of tom stokes from enniscorthy, on the 100th anniversary of his death in 1917 at the age of 24.

Tom was involved in the 1916 rising in Eniscorthy and was sent to the POW camp in Frongoch in Wales, whilst here he got sick and passed away shortly after his release. Relatives of Tom's, from the Kavanagh family, were present on the day to unveil a new plaque in his honour n

enniscorthy business association (eba) and enniscorthy & district Chamber have introduced a new initiative for the town establishing a town team aimed at re-vitalising and reawakening our slumbering metropolis. Following on from the very successful meeting earlier in the year at Riverside Park Hotel with David Fitzsimons, CEO of Retail Excellence, the new Town Team is a three-pronged programme comprising of Retail Offer, Public Realm and Citizen Engagement. The Retail Offer team is made up of Declan O’Leary, Damian Byrne and Rachel Scully and covers the enhancement of vacant retail outlets and the procurement of tenants for same. The Public Realm group is Anton Treacy, Conor Burke, Pauline Maguire and Helen Byrne with the responsibility for streetscape, foliage planting and the general image of the town. The Citizen Engagement group is Dermot Kavanagh, Mary Hudson, Aideen Kavanagh and Fiona Keegan and involves positively promoting the town while mark e t i n g i t t o p ro s p e c t i v e customers. The new initiative will begin with a concentrated focus on the core of the town at Market Square and the streets that branch from it. Street Ambassadors have been appointed as follows: Market

Square and Main Street – Mary Hudson, Slaney Street and Place – Declan O`Leary, Castle Hill – Rachel Scully, Rafter Street – Pauline Maguire, Court Street – Damian Byrne, Wafer Street – Helen Byrne. As the scheme progresses, further Street Ambassadors will be appointed. The Gardaí, Council, Tidy Towns, E.B.A. and the Chamber all have representation on the Town Team and will all be working together to move the town forward socially, economically and aesthetically. Any suggestions that you, the general public, may have to further enhance, improve or develop your own particular street or the town in general please feel free to contact a member of the Town Team or a Street Ambassador. Remember the old Irish adage ‘air scaith le cheile a mhairin na daoine’ or translated ‘we live in each other ’s shadow’. So let’s all cast a good light on our town! – Maria Nolan Damian Byrne, Chairperson, Enniscorthy Business Association.

Enniscorthy well represented at National Famine Commemoration such is the growing popularity and national recognition of enniscorthy historical reenactment society that a golden invitation was received by each of its members from minister of Culture, heritage and the gaeltacht, heather humphries to attend at the national Famine Commemoration, on 30th september at the Famine warhouse, ballingarry, Co. tipperary. The Enniscorthy Group were privileged to be part of a full Programme of Events organised by the National Famine Commemoration Committee to ensure that those who perished or emigrated during An Gorta Mor are remembered forever. Between 1845 and 1852, approximately one million Irish people died of starvation and disease, while another 1.8 million fled in search of a better life, most of them never to return. An Taoiseach, Leo Varadkar, complimented the Famine

Committee and all involved in the organising of the solemn, poignant and dignified event. The Famine, he said, not only led to enormous suffering and

loss of life but also changed Ireland`s demographic and cultural landscape, the effects of which can still be felt today. The very moving cere-

monies concluded with a piper’s lament, the laying of wreaths and a Minutes Silence for all those who died, followed by the playing of the Last Post, the

raising of the Tricolour and the National Anthem. All invited guests were then taken for refreshments where they talked and mingled with

many of the Enniscorthy group availing of the opportunity to have their photographs taken with the Taoiseach. – Maria Nolan

the Bard of avon himself would have been well pleased, me thinks, with the performances at the Presentation centre last month, as enniscorthy Drama Group did him proud in the comedy Shakespeare’s a Dick. In fact Wally, aka talented actor Brian Mullen, was spontaneously applauded by the audience, mid stream, so to speak, as he delivered a rather lengthy piece from Romeo and Juliet, word perfect and almost without a breath. The ease with which this actor interchanged from rednecked Wally to an eloquent Shakespearean player and back again is indicative of his theatrical ability. And indeed the same could be said of Raimie, aka Tim Connaughton, who is no stranger to Enniscorthy audiences and can always be relied on for a sterling performance. Newcomer to EDG, Kit Bolger not only has great stage presence but perfect timing and delivery making her the ideal candidate for the comic Doris. And EDG stalwart and extremely talented Annemarie Whelan gives a memorable performance as the orgasmic Ingrid with shades of When Harry Met Sally. With this one, Fintan Kelly has proved himself to be a director of note, choosing an excellent cast and very cleverly written play and should do

Enniscorthy Drama proud on the One Act Circuit. – Maria Nolan Below: Nicky Morrissey, Doireann Morrissey, Leona Maguire and Andrew Foley at Shakespeare’s A Dick. Bottom: Padraig Doyle, Breda Coady, Aine Doyle, Eddie Kelly and Linda Thorpe at the play. Pics: Maria Nolan.

Comhairle na nÓg’s play has a clear message on 6th october, the halls of wexford county council headquarters at carricklawn echoed with a clear message from wexford comhairle na nÓg – Do not be afraid to access counselling services if you need help with your mental health. The young people’s Council presented their short play “STIGMA” to highlight their personal experiences of accessing counselling services. In 2017/2018 they aim to raise awareness on the stigma attached to accessing and attending counselling appointments in a school setting. The play was produced, written and directed by the Wexford Comhairle na nÓg together with Dale Kirwan

who volunteered his time to lead this play to reality. Chairman of the County Council, Councillor John Hegarty introduced the play and highlighted the importance of positivism for young people. Councillor Frank Staples generously spoke of his own experiences of mental health, outlining how difficult an experience it can be to have poor mental health. He spoke of the range of services available to young people and stressed the importance of contacting friends and family if you need help. After the performance, Chairman of FDYS, Marie Diskin said that “the young people of CNN should be very proud of their work. It has a strong message concerning

mental health and people are always welcome to avail of the range of FDYS services that are there to support them”. Minister of State Paul Kehoe TD, who was also in the audience, thanked the young people for highlighting the issue of mental health. He went on to say that “there is an important message in the play for young people and those working with young people”. Young people affected by challenges with Mental Health are asked to contact any member of the FDYS team for support. A full range of contact details is available on www.fdys.ie, or people can contact Kieran Donohoe FDYS Chief Executive on 053 91 23262 who will direct them to an appropriate service. n

In late september I had a call from well known enniscorthian David hasslacher, asking if I would be interested in meeting him at the athenaeum to take a photograph of someone who had performed on the stage there back in the 1940s. The person in question, a lovely, genteel man, Martin White who now resides in England was on a visit to Enniscorthy with his daughter Deirdre Thomas and her husband Keith, and had the good fortune to come across David, son of the late Betty Hasslacher, who had made such an impression on Martin in his youth. In fact one of Martin's abidi n g m e m o r i e s f ro m h i s Enniscorthy schooldays was having been recruited to play a small part as a Roman slave in a production of Caesar's Friend at the Athenaeum theatre, where the star of the show was none other than the same Mrs. Betty Hasslacher ‘a charming and highly attractive lady who helped me through my stage fright’. Martin White, otherwise known as Joseph, or as a boy growing up in Enniscorthy, Joe White, spent much of his boyhood here in the 1940s, where his father William White was the local Customs & Excise officer. His mother Ellen Kavanagh from Killincooley near Kilmuckridge sadly died when he was just four years old leaving his father a widower with seven children. The White family lived in a

town house on Cathedral Street, formerly the Bishop's house. Martin and his two brothers attended the local Christian Brothers School where they were taught by Mr. Michael Tobin, father of the writer Colm Toibin, whilst his sisters attended the Loreto Convent in Enniscorthy. Martin told me that Mr. Michael Tobin was ‘the best teacher he has ever had’. In Enniscorthy Martin spent most of his boyhood spare time fly fishing on the river Slaney and whilst he loves all sports, fly-fishing for trout and salmon remain his favourite. His mother Ellen Kavanagh and her brother John Kavanagh were the seventh generation of the Kavanagh family to have farmed at Killincooley and its adjoining farm at Tinnabearna. The Tinnabearna farm adjoined the sea, and thus the White family had the opportunity every summer of having both a farm holiday and a seaside holiday at the same time. Martin remembers these days as idyllic. On leaving school Martin began a banking career with the Bank of Ireland in Waterford. After two years with the Bank of Ireland he joined Standard Chartered Bank, a British overseas bank based in London. His Standard Chartered career took him to India, Pakistan, Dubai, Sri Lanka, where he told me he enjoyed trout fishing in the mountains and Iraq, where he met and

married an English lady named Patricia. Standard Chartered at that time was interested in business in the Middle East and sent Martin to the Middle East Centre of Arab Studies MECAS, in the village of Shemlan in the Lebanese mountains for ten months to study and learn the Arabic language and culture. Although it is a very difficult language for Europeans to learn, Martin said that when he became familiar with it he found it had ‘some very attractive poetry and prose’. After twenty years with Standard Chartered, Martin was recruited by a large American bank where he looked after the bank's interests in the Middle East and Africa and regularly attended and spoke at the annual meetings of the International Monetary Fund in Washington. After all his years away and all his travels around the world, Martin, now a retiree, tries to visit Ireland as often as he can and was hugely impressed with his tour of Enniscorthy Castle especially when accompanied by former Castle resident David Hasslacher, and also with the newly refurbished Athenaeum where he was delighted to once again grace the famous stage over seventy years after his debut there and where I was delighted to photograph him and capture a small snippet of personal history at the iconic theatre at the heart of Enniscorthy. – Maria Nolan

Between 3rd–5th October over 650 media moguls including journalists, bloggers, vloggers, travel writers and new media content creators converged on Killarney Convention Centre for the prestigious TBEX Europe 2017 Conference, hosted by Failte Ireland. These visitors have an online output which reaches an audience of over 300 million people, a hugely significant event for our tourism industry. A range of pre-Conference familiarisation trips were organised for attendees many of whom were in Ireland for an average of nine days. These trips featured all that Ireland has to offer including Dublin, Ireland’s Ancient East and the Wild Atlantic Way, helping

Ireland go viral as these delegates posted, tweeted and shared their experiences. On one of these trips twelve of the visitors descended on our town to view our assets and attractions and what we might have to offer potential visitors. Escorted by Cathy Keane of Wexford Heritage Tours, the Creative Ireland Press Group was welcomed by Liz Hore, Town Manager, John Carley, Director of Services, Council Chairman Keith Doyle, Chamber President Maree Lyng and Chamber CEO Catriona Murphy and Enniscorthy Historical Re-enactment Society. The group that included Journalists, Bloggers and Vloggers from Belgium, The Netherlands, Italy, Austria,

Canada, USA and UK was taken on a whirlwind tour of the town visiting the Cathedral, the Athenaeum, the Castle and Paddy Furlong’s Pub in Templeshannon. Inclement weather conditions prohibited a visit to Vinegar Hill but the group seemed to be well pleased with all they saw being particularly impressed with the re-enactors dressed as Redcoats and Pikemen for 1 7 9 8 , I r i s h Vo l u n t e e r & Cumann na mBan for the Athenaeum and Norman Knights and 1950s for the Castle and Brooklyn. Those I spoke to had the height of praise for EHRS who brought the colourful history of the town to life for them and were equally impressed with the

Afternoon Tea provided for them in a Norman Castle by The Wilds Restaurant and the Castle staff, and delighted with the warmth of the welcome extended to them by all in Enniscorthy. They also had an opportunity to view some local crafts at the Castle including Ceadogan Rugs, Gilly Thomas Sculpture and Mairead Stafford Pottery. This can only augur well for the town and its marvelous potential as a travel destination going forward as they share their experiences and photographs with hundreds of millions of travellers all over the world through their blogs, YouTube, traditional media and social media channels. – Maria Nolan

Taking a stand on dog litter!

VET DIARY FOR NOV

with the Moyne Veterinary Hospital This month, Joe Kavanagh recalls the remarkable Toby. An interesting part of my job is listening to people’s experiences and their observations of their animals’ behaviour and traits. For people who live on their own with their dog or cat this can be a very acute awareness of the subtle but often profound nuances animals do that gives us the clues to what they're telling us. Such was the case with Toby, a gentle, big, black labrador dog. He lived with his owner and her mother when she became ill with heart trouble. Toby was very attached to both of them. Over time they noticed that Toby made an unusual whine / howl when the owner’s mam was becoming ill. He would put his paw on her chest as much as to say 'rest there now'. It coincided with the bouts of illness that the old lady had to be rushed off to the hospital and they realised that Toby was alerting them to the episode before they knew themselves! Then as time progressed and it happened different times they took heed of what he was telling them, rang the ambulance and every time the doctors in the hospital were amazed that the old lady was presented just in the nick of time. I'm not sure if they told the doctors the reason behind the 'Divine intervention' or how would ya explain it to the ambulance man that ya better get here quick coz Toby says so!!... Nevertheless he alerted them that number of times that they took it for real. And if the children were sick he'd do the same for them. He'd sniff their face and again put his paw up to their chest and invaribly they'd be in the early stages of picking up a flu or dose. The note to the teacher would be interesting reading why the little one isn't in school today!! Over the last few years I've been treating Toby, getting snippets of his great stories. He had some hip problems in the last while as he's getting on in years and we'd do our bit to get him back on track. He had responded well time and again. His owner was very good to him and if there was any sign of him in distress or discomfort she'd be on the blower straight away. I was on night duty and got an early morning call from her, he had taken a turn himself and knew something serious was up. We saw him immediately and he was in shock. He was extremely ill and was slipping fast. We decided not to prolong his pain and put him to sleep. He was a gentle giant who died as he lived gracefully and peacefully. It was my privilege to work with both him and his owner. These gentle souls have so much to teach us… We only have to watch and listen. n

Limerick City and County Council has secured its first court conviction relating to dog fouling. A dog owner was successfully prosecuted before Limerick District Court last month relating to an incident in the city on January 6th this year. The man, who is aged in his 60s, was initially issued with an on-the-spot fine after his dog was seen fouling by two local authority workers. A court prosecution under the provisions of the Litter Pollution Act was initiated by the local authority over the summer after the man, who owns a black Labrador dog, failed to pay the initial fine.

The man pleaded not guilty to the charge and following a contested hearing, Judge Marian O’Leary convicted him and imposed a fine of €80. The defendant was also given six months to pay the costs of the council associated with the prosecution which totalled €380. It is open to the man to appeal the conviction and the severity of the penalty to the circuit court. While not commenting on the specific case, a spokesperson for Limerick City and County Council renewed an appeal to all dog owners – across the city and county – to clean up after

their dogs if they foul on public footpaths, roads or green areas. The local authority says every complaint which is received from members of the public in relation to dogfouling is followed up on and investigated. Where appropriate, action such as the issuing of fines will be taken in cases where a culprit is identified. With Wexford County Council now implementing “Operation Spota Dubh”, an anti-dumping initiative which targets litter and waste blackspots throughout Co. Wexford, let’s hope the issue of dog fouling gets the attention it deserves. n

The peregrine and the pinscher On Saturday 7th October the annual blessing of pets took place in front of St Aidan’s Cathedral, Enniscorthy. The timing of the blessing of pets and animals is to coincide with the Feast Day of St Francis of Assisi, the patron saint of animals and the environment. Francis had a special love for animals as God's gift to us and our companions in life. n Pics: Courtesy of Jim O’Connor.

A local contributor looks at life today in Enniscorthy and beyond PensIons Many are now aware of the campaign launched by Councillor Michael Sheehan of New Ross to reverse Joan Burton’s cuts to old age pensions in 2012. This campaign reached the Dáil in the last couple of weeks by way of a motion from the Fianna Fail party calling for the reinstatement of the previous qualifying criteria. The motion was passed by 85 votes to 44 votes. In the course of the debate Sheehan got honourable mention as an individual who was doing a tremendous work in this regard. However the bad news is that because of our peculiar system of democracy it doesn’t matter a whit that this motion was carried. Nothing will happen in relation to righting this wrong. Any change in this will only come about if the government or some of the opposition parties successfully push legislation through the Oireachtas to change the current pension system. For the record the Wexford deputies in favour of changing the system to correct the injustice: Mick Wallace, James Browne and Brendan Howlin (Yes, Brendan Howlin whose party actually brought in the cuts. They

must have been reading my last column where I pointed out that the time had come for Labour to put their hands up and admit that they got this wrong. Their spokesman Deputy Willie Penrose accepted this in the Dáil debate. Incidentally Joan Burton wasn’t in the Dáil to vote either way on this. Probably would have been a bit embarrassing.) In favour of retaining the present system: Paul Kehoe. Absent: Michael D’Arcy. In fairness to D’Arcy he may have been elsewhere on official business and have been paired with an opposition deputy. I bet that Paul Kehoe wishes that he could have been so lucky. In the meantime Sheehan’s campaign is continuing and no doubt we will hear a lot more about this. ClImate Change After the recent storms many are now seriously discussing the issue of climate change. Met Éireann, who it has to be said kept those of us who could still access them, well up to scratch as to what was happening, are not pinning any flags to the mast on this one. Their view is somewhat one swallow does not make

Pic: ©Joseph Doyle

View from the Hill a good summer as in a couple of bad storms every few years does not yet indicate permanent climate change. While being a bit sceptical myself, not to the extent of Danny Healy Rae, it has to be said that something is happening. How small countries like Ireland can solve this I don’t know. We hear a lot of talk about fossil fuels and what we must do to alleviate the perceived or real problem. But the bottom line is that if Ireland went back to the stone age, got rid of all our cars and livestock, travelled only on bikes and totally eradicated the burning of anything which might

remotely harm the environment the overall global effect would be virtually nil. Unless there is a global change in attitude, which is highly unlikely, climate change if it’s real, is going to happen and the human race will just have to adapt or go under. I was going to conclude by saying that we shall wait and see but methinks this body will be contributing to the pollution of the earth long before there is a conclusion to this. the sIngle market We hear a lot of talk nowadays about the European Single

Market. This is effectively an area consisting of the 28 current members of the European Union plus such countries as Iceland, Norway and Switzerland. The purpose of the Single Market is to allow free trade and access to each country without restriction to those who want to do business with each other. Sounds great doesn’t it. Yep it is until you or me try to do a bit of free trade with regard to getting a mortgage or business loan from a European bank rather than our own (and I’m being charitable here) bankers. The reason that you or I might want to do this is that on average throughout Europe banks charge an interest rate of approximately 1.6% to maybe 2%. Our lads here charge anything (think of a number) between 3.9% and 6%. How they justify this scandal I don’t know nor care to be honest. The bottom line is that we should, if the Single Market works for the population at large, be able to go to a European based bank and apply for a loan or mortgage as we are citizens of a country which is in the Single Market. But guess what? We can’t. Us mere mortals are compelled by law to only obtain ripoff finance from our local boyos

without any recourse to the Single Market. On top of that Sparkhassen Bank of Germany is trying to get a licence to set up in Ireland and is finding the going particularly tough. Many obstacles are being put in the way by official Ireland so it looks as if us lowly citizens of this state will have to wait a long time before we can benefit from the so-called Single Market. Ireland’s PlannIng laws The planning laws in this country need to be reviewed urgently. The Apple saga in Athenry is an example of how not to do business when trying to create jobs and improve the economy generally. This episode is dragging on for years while similar projects by Apple in other European countries commenced at the same time are actually up and almost running. While the public must have the right to have a say as to what type of development will proceed in their area it is essential that the system be speeded up significantly. n We are often asked: Who is the “View from the Hill” columnist? All we can say is that the author’s surname is NOT Doyle!

While the port, like every other sector in Ireland, is bracing itself for the impact of Brexit, there are definite plans in place for the mainte-

nance and expansion of the port,” she said. “In Europe I put a number of questions to the Parliamentary Research Service about possible lines of funding for the port. They sent me a lengthy reply which I have given to management to digest and to see if it contains anything of use. “I have also assured them of my office's full support if they require help setting up meetings or accessing funding from Europe. “As Dublin becomes ever more crowded there is huge

potential for Rosslare and the South East to benefit and I will be on hand to help that in any way I can.” Sinn Féin Councillor Anthony Kelly has been active in promoting the port in the region. “Rosslare is not just the South East's gateway to Europe but Europe's gateway to the South East,” he said. “A vibrant and thriving port is good for Rosslare as a whole and indeed the entire region. The community here can continue to count on Sinn Féin's support locally, nationally and in Europe.” n

Prius Plug-in Hybrid reView by CAroline Kidd

toyota has enhanced the Prius hybrid range in Ireland with the addition of a new toyota Prius Plug-in hybrid. While the concept of using a petrol engine assisted by an electric motor to boost efficiency and lower CO2 emissions is the same, the Prius Plug-in Hybrid gives customers the option of driving their Prius on pure electric power for a range of up to 50km. Buyers can charge their Prius like an electric vehicle, meaning that for drivers travelling short distances regularly and access to the facilities to charge the car, they could be dipping into that tank of fuel very little. The Toyota Prius Plug-in Hybrid uses the same 1.8litre petrol as the regular Prius Hybrid, with a lithium ion battery located under the rear load space. The two models can be distinguished by different light clusters front and rear, and the Prius Plug-in Hybrid is also slightly longer than a regular Prius. The car is futuristic looking b u t t h a t re a r c a n l o o k ungainly from some angles. Getting into the Prius can be a bit of a surprise as the dashboard layout is anything but conventional. The large digital screen to your

left displays your speed and other information regarding the hybrid system. It also shows you scores related to how eco-friendly your driving is and encourages you to do better! While the Toyota Prius Hybrid starts from €31,450, the Prius Plug-in Hybrid is significantly more expensive at €37,125. Equipment from base includes four electric windows, auto lights and wipers, keyless entry and start, 15" alloys, touchscreen, adaptive cruise control, heated front seats, Pre Collision System with Pedestrian Detection, Road Sign Assist and rear view camera.

There is also a Solar grade (from €39,550) that includes a solar panel roof (!) that helps to recharge the battery and a Luxury grade (from €40,390) that includes front and rear parking sensors, JBL premium sound system and parking assist. There are a few caveats to this car however aside from the steeper list price. The larger battery means that boot space has been reduced to a shallow 360 litres and there are only two seats in the back: the Prius Plug-in Hybrid is a strict four seater. In terms of charging the car, it's very simple. There is an additional flap on the

side of the car and a cable included to charge your car at a public charging point or at home using a wall mounted charger. Charging takes about two hours and then you can drive the car as a pure electric vehicle for up to 50kms, especially useful if you are an urban driver with a short commute. Elsewhere, the Toyota Prius Plug-in Hybrid is a large, comfortable car that is super smooth to drive. The car is heavier than the regular Prius so it doesn't feel as nippy or agile in corners, but the car's most redeeming features are its refinement and fuel sipping character. The Toyota Prius

Plug-In Hybrid has extremely low emissions of 22g CO2 per kilometre, while fuel consumption is a claimed 1litre/100km. In real life terms when drawing power from both the petrol engine and the electric motor, it's easy to achieve upwards of 70mpg from this car - no mean feat for a large car like this! The Toyota Prius Plug-in Hybrid is an impressively refined and relaxing hybrid to drive but it's not without its drawbacks, namely the price premium over a regular Prius Hybrid and the reduced boot space and rear seating. Yes this car has the potential to be cheaper to

run - with the right lifestyle you could effectively run it cheaply as an electric vehicle with a petrol tank as back up on longer journeys. The Toyota Prius is a fine, economical car in its own right; the addition of a plug adds a new dimension to Prius. model tested: Toyota Prius Plug-In Hybrid PHV Luxury Price: €40,390 (Starts at €37,125) Engine: 1.8-litre petrol/electric hybrid Power: 122hp 0-100km/h: 11.1 seconds Top speed: 162km/h Claimed Economy: 1/100km CO2 emissions: 22g/km Motor tax: €170 per year n

Enniscorthy Golf Club – never a better time to join! if you’re new to the game of golf or thinking about playing, getting started can seem a little daunting – but it doesn’t have to be. There is a pathway through from your first lessons to playing and then joining which you can take in Enniscorthy Golf Club. The first step to becoming a golfer is to sign up to one of the Beginner courses in the club. All you have to do is wear something comfortable, including flat shoes, and turn up. If you have your own golf clubs bring them along, but equipment will be provided if necessary. You will meet new people and have fun while learning the basics of the game from the PGA Professional, Stephen. It doesn’t matter how good you are or if you prefer to learn slowly or fast, you can simply take it all at your own pace. If you’ve enjoyed it, you might want to progress to the four months’ Get Into Golf membership or some other option that might suit you better. Players often meet like-minded people on beginner courses who then continue together and meet up for social practise sessions, such as on the driving range, followed by a coffee in the club house. The key is to learn in the best way that suits you and to do it in your own time. Once you have learnt the basics of the game, you might want to head out onto the golf course with some friends and start playing a few holes, so starting with 5 or 9 holes

is ideal. The Club has thriving sections for men, ladies, seniors and juniors who are always willing to help and support new golfers by taking them out on the course and introducing them to other like-minded golfers. Once you start to play regularly it’s best to consider joining the club and get to take part in more events which suit your golf level. You will then get your handicap and start entering the main competitions. Building on your skills will help you improve and enjoy the game further. Among the many benefits of membership in Enniscorthy Golf Club are: GOlF 1. Members have full access throughout the year to a superbly manicured golf course, with mature, tree-lined fairways, excellent greens and great natural beauty in the foothills of the Blackstairs Mountains. “The course is challenge enough for anyone while giving hope for good things” - Pat Ruddy, European Club. 2. Free practice facilities for members include a driving range, putting greens, chipping area, pitching and bunkers area. Our on-site Golf Professional, Stephen Fitzpatrick, runs a friendly, well stocked shop and is happy to offer members a 10% on purchases over €20. Buggies are also available for hire at a very competitive price.

3. At the busy weekends you can book your preferred tee time and know you’ll get a game. Online tee-time bookings are from the comfort of your own home or office. 4. As a member you can play whenever you want, as many holes as you want. It doesn’t always have to be 18 holes. Come over after work on a sunny summer’s evening and enjoy a few relaxing holes followed by refreshments in the 19th hole. ou can choose to play social golf with friends or take part in competitions, eg monthly medals, weekly stableford, club championships or team competitions. 5. Enniscorthy Golf Club gives you the option to be competitive by participating on teams. The Club has a very successful competitive history in both the ladies’ and men’s sections. In the last 10 years accolades include the Barton Cup (3 times), Provincial Towns’ Cup, All-Ireland Mixed, Irish Ladies’ Junior Cup (twice), Irish Ladies’ Intermediate Cup, Irish Ladies’ Junior Foursomes and numerous provincial titles. You might also get to play some of Ireland’s best courses absolutely free - in the name of ‘team practice’. 6. Introduce your kids to the game in the Club as everything they need is available, from the pro,

to coaching, practise facilities and the restaurant. We have a very active Juvenile and Junior section with coaching provided and the current lowest handicapper in the club (+2) came through our Junior section. Golf is a game that the whole family can start and enjoy together. 7. The Club has an excellent location in the Sunny South East just over one hour from Dublin. 8. It takes less time to play 18 holes and with less walking between holes than other golf courses - average time is less than 4 hours! 9. Lockers are available to members so you don’t have to lug your golf clubs around with you in the car. FiNANCiAl 10. Easy payment plans are can be availed of for your 2018 membership. Players joining in November will even get a couple of extra months for free. 11. Being a member means you are committed to the game and you will make the effort to play on a regular basis. 12. Members can avail of reduced greenfees to bring out guests so you can invite your friends to join you for a round. And maybe they’ll invite you back!! 90 years yOung! doyles Pub, the duffry, celebrated its 90th birthday recently with a party. It’s 90 years since Joe Doyle and his wife, Bridget, bought the pub from Jordan’s of Ballindaggin. Joe served his time as a messenger boy, potman and barman before he took it over. The pub dates back to the 1700s when it was known as the Beaver Hat Coach Inn. Joe bought it and turned it into a bar and grocery. Now his children, John and Mary, run it. Joe’s grandson, Joe, works there also, as does Anne Ryan, John’s niece. The longest running bar person is Sandra Hore with 30 years. The locals would tell you it’s the best pub in town. It is a great sports pub and win or lose the Rapps, Starlights and

Enniscorthy Rugby Club supporters frequent the pub. At the 90th celebrations, there was a great atmosphere with everyone enjoying the craic and music with Reilly’s Men. Doyle’s Bar would like to thank ABC Restaurant for the food, the customers and Reilly’s Men for a great night. Here’s to the next 90 years. – Joseph doyle

www.slaneynews.com the starlights gaa Club is celebrating one hundred years in existence this year, being formed in 1917 at the height of Ireland’s struggle for freedom and wexford’s supremacy in gaelic football. Wexford hosted the first ever football championship match in Ireland when Taghmon and Kilmannon met in the inaugural Wexford Football Championship in February 1887 and that was followed by a remarkable period of football dominance, culminating in the county`s 4 All Ireland Senior Football titles in-a-row between 1915 and 1918. The timing was just right for the formation of a new football club for Enniscorthy. There are many theories about the origins of the name Starlights - but as we approach the 100th Anniversary, the most

ON A STARRY, STARRY NIGHT popular and the most romantic version seems to be that on a starry night 100 years ago, at No. 3 Lower Duffry Gate, Jimmy Murphy and his friend Joe O`Brien were standing in Murphy`s doorway discussing the idea of starting a football team for all the lads on the Duffry. It had been the main topic among them for some time and the big issue was what they would call themselves. As Jimmy and Joe talked excitedly about starting this new club it came to them suddenly like a bolt from the Heavens above that the new club should be called the Starlights - and the rest as they say is history. Well at the very least it`s our story and we`re sticking to it and

ENNISCORTHY GIRLS RUGBY u16s girls Enniscorthy v Portlartington at home

An excellent start for the girls – in the second minute of the game Katie Whelan got over the line for Enniscorthy’s first try of this Leinster Premier 1 division 1 qualifier A. In the 10th, 16th and 24th minutes, Enniscorthy’s Katie Whelan scored try after try and two were converted by Aoife Codd. Just coming up to half time with a great pass and some quick hands and even better side-stepping moves Erin Cahill scored Enniscorthy’s fifth try of the day also converted by Aoife Codd leaving the score at 31-0. There was just no stopping these girls, their team work was exceptional. Second half started with Enniscorthy showing no let-up on the Port side, the opposition could not get to grips with the strength of this great group of girls. The game was abandoned shortly after the second half started as a Portarlington girl got injured, we wish her a speedy recovery. Enniscorthy team consists of Aoife Codd, Ava O’Connor, Ciara Boland, Ciara O’Leary, Eabha Farrell, Erin Cahill, Eva Greene, Katie Foley, Katie Whelan, Kaci O’Connor, Lara Freeman, Lauren Delaney, Lucy Egan, Mia Kelly, Maria O Dowd, Ruth Bolger, Taragh Cooper, Ellen Rogan, Eimear Fitzgerald, and Faye Larkin. Next fixture is on 4th November – a friendly against Gorey in Gorey.

sure in truth the bright yellow star emblazoned on the jersey certainly does add credence to it. A romantic name no doubt for a football club and almost unique, there are very few clubs around the country called Starlights, in fact I found only one at Santry in Dublin which was formed in the 1950`s and according to their Secretary there could well be a Wexford link to their name. Established, as I said, in 1917 the Starlights won their first ever title in Junior in 1921 and less than a decade after their formation they moved up into the senior ranks and did a remarkable hat-trick winning the senior championship in 1927/28 and 1929.

In 1933 they beat the Sarsfields in the senior decider and won titles back to back in 1936 and 1937. In 1961 they were beaten by their old opponents the Sarsfields and were beaten again two years later in 1963 by Ballyhogue. In 1971 Bellefield GAA Grounds – the home of the Starlights became the home of the newly formed Rapparees/Starlights – with the amalgamation of the Starlights and Emmets footballers and the St. Aidan’s and Shamrocks Hurling Clubs. The name Rapparees was chosen for the hurling team from the legendary Enniscorthy side, the Red Rapparees 1904-1914. Under the new regime the

Starlights had to wait until 1983 to capture their next Senior County title defeating the Wexford District, and were back in the final again in 1988, but were beaten by a great Duffry Rovers side. In the nineties it was very much the case of you step out and we step in again as the Rapparees and the Starlights contested 6 County Finals between them from 1993 to 2001 – Rapparees appearing in the 1993, 1996, 1998 and 2001 finals and Starlights contesting the 1994 and 2000 finals, alas all to no avail until, finally, after all the heartbreak, trial and tribulation the Starlights beat Duffry Rovers in the 2002 Final and brought the coveted trophy back to Enniscorthy

and Bellefield to major scenes of joy and jubilation. The Stars repeated that triumph in 2004 beating the Sarsfields in Wexford Park and in 2007 were back in the Senior Football Final again only to lose out to Clongeen. The Starlights Club has been synonymous with Bellefield, the town of Enniscorthy and indeed Wexford football for a whole century now, and with their brilliant history, it is only fitting that they are back once again as county champions in their 100th year. I would like to take this opportunity to wish them well with their anniversary celebrations and ask the people of Enniscorthy to show their support and appreciation for the wonderful sporting entity that is – THE STARLIGHTS. – maria nolan

Wexford Mental Health Art Expo I was delighted to be asked to attend the launch of the first ever art exhibition of the wexford mental health association, a fringe of the opera Festival, at henrietta street on Friday 20th october. And such was the success of this inaugural event that national Mental Health Association CEO Martin Rogan told the Wexford organisers that they were not to be surprised to see the rest of the country following suit and running with this most excellent idea. MC for the special occasion, Alice Doyle, Director, outlined the purpose of the project to use art as a means of creating awareness of and promoting mental health, and went on to say such is the calibre of the work on display

that even the National Gallery would be envious of the exhibition. Eoin Barry read a wonderfully emotive piece by Jayden Byrne expressing what art and the project has meant to him and the difference it has made to his life. Very eloquently he said that it has given new meaning and reason to his life and has given him a place in the world and a feeling of being part of something. Dr. Kieran Moore, who works mainly with human suffering, said that the difference between illness and wellness is simply pain and how the human being expresses that pain is hugely important, particularly when it is a pain that can’t be seen or easily diagnosed. ‘Art’ he continued ‘allows a person to express

feeling and the human experience beyond words’. James Browne TD, Fianna Fail Spokesperson on Mental Health complimented the organisers for coming up with the innovative project and all the contributors on the marvellous pieces on display saying ‘All the contributors possess an incredible talent turning all that is going on in their lives into fabulous art’. Comedian Al Porter, arriving late due to heavy traffic and poor weather conditions, was on his way to perform at the Spiegeltent but said he just had to stop by and applaud the inspiring project and admire the art. His message was to ‘Always talk, don`t be afraid to say what you are feeling’. One of the great things he said about being a stand up comic is that

‘you get a chance to go on stage under the guise of entertainment and say just about whatever you want’. ‘Do talk, do mind yourself, not everyone can wake up positive and delighted to be alive but that’s ok too’. Before he left for the Spiegeltent, Al purchased one of the beautiful pieces on display called ‘Hidden Gem’. My own favourite, I have to say, was the exquisite Billy Roche portrait by Sarah Prendergast, which has been donated by Sarah and is for auction for the duration of the exhibition which runs for the weekends of the Opera Festival from 11.00-17.00 daily. Do call into Wexford Mental Health on Henrietta Street and view this most interesting and excellent exhibition. – maria nolan

The Arts Department of Wexford County Council in partnership with Wexford Arts Centre are delighted to present Bare Root, a group exhibition exploring rural and farmyard environments, and the points where nature and the man-made intersect. Situated in County Buildings, Bare Root features the work of eleven artists: Frank Abruzzese, Michael Canning, Els Dietvorst, Michael Fortune, Janet Mullarney, Rosie O’Gorman, Helen Robbins, Blaise Smith, Brigitta Varadi, Michael Wann and Katie Watchorn. The term Bare Root refers to a technique of arboriculture whereby a plant is removed from soil in a dormant state, from which it can more rapidly acclimate to new soil conditions. This diverse exhibition recognises the sensibilities surrounding land and labour, illuminating the nuances and materiality of Irish rural farming, capturing the traditional and common place in a profoundly uncommon yet relatable way. Bare Root is in Wexford County Council Buildings until Friday 1st December 2017, and opening hours are Monday to Friday from 9am - 5pm. The exhibition, due to unavoidable circumstances, will be closed from Monday 6th - Friday 10th November (inclusive).

Orla Barry – Breaking Rainbows Installation at wexford arts Centre in association with wexford Festival opera. 22 october - 18 november 2017. The genesis of Breaking Rainbows began as a conversation between artist Orla Barry and Wexford Arts Centre curator Catherine Bowe. Initially conceived as a solo exhibition, Barry and Bowe's conversations developed over time into something much more. Two years later, Barry's ambitious performance/installation Breaking Rainbows began its national and international tour and was first shown at Temple Bar Gallery & Studios and premiered as part of the Dublin Theatre Festival (29 Sept - 5 Nov 2016). Breaking Rainbows uses the relationship between wo/man and animal, and the cannibalistic, symbiotic tension between (Orla Barry) the artist and (Orla Barry) the shepherd to reflect on the primal and poetic and unpredictable bond we have in the natural world. Endearing, humorous and challenging, Breaking Rainbows reflects on both our interdependence and disconnection from the natural environment. Made up of a series of vignettes, Barry's work brings us into a journey through time, conceptualisations and effects: from the realms of sheep farming traditions, ancient Greek shepherd's singing competitions, contemporary consumerism and gender roles, to the intimate relationship of caring for a sheep about to give birth. n
