comment In this issue we highlight many of the events and entertainment Enniscorthy has to offer this Christmas – see pages 14-23. There’s lots to keep us all amused, young and old, over the Christmas period. In addition to socialising close to home this Christmas we should all try and shop close to home too. The economic future of Enniscorthy and the future employment of a lot of our young people depends largely on the retail/services sector so local spending benefits us all in the long run. One way to spend a bit more locally is to buy and use Enniscorthy Gift Vouchers which are available from various locations in town such as Byrne’s Bookshop, Enniscorthy Credit Union, Frizelle O’Leary & Co. Solicitors, Enniscorthy Chamber, and Pettitt’s, in €10 and €20 units, or directly from www.enniscorthygiftvoucher.ie. The vouchers make great gifts for birthdays, anniversaries etc and, of course, for Christmas. They can be spent in over 70 local businesses. And for employers – they are a great, tax-efficient way to reward employees. – Frank Corcoran

Tech Tip

Safe online Shopping

by DaviD pohluDek Ferns compuTer services

Shoppers familiar with the Cyber Monday circus know they’re stepping into the lion’s den that can become particularly rough during the holiday shopping season. So, bargain hunters, it’s important to know the warning signs. Here’s your guide to safe online shopping. 1. Go directly to a store’s website instead of using search engines to look for deals. 2. Give pop-ups and other digital ads the stank eye. Many pop-ups could contain fake coupons, redirect you to malicious sites, or expose you to cross-site scripting attacks. 3. Watch out for social media scams, especially on Facebook. Cybercriminals are using fake or compromised Facebook accounts in order to post links to amaaaaaazing deals that don’t actually exist. 4. Dump Cyber Monday emails with attachments in the virtual garbage. Cyber Monday emails with attachments, especially zip files, are super suspect. Delete them immediately. 5. Make sure you’re on a secure connection. Look for the padlock icon to the left of the URL when you go to check out. If it’s there, then that means the information passed between a store’s server and your browser remains private. In addition, the URL should read “https” and not just “http.” 6. Do not use debit cards to shop online. Play it safe by using credit cards or a PayPal account that’s linked to a credit card. 7. Avoid using public wifi to shop. All a cybercriminal needs to do to get a public wifi password and wreak havoc is order a coffee. 8. Watch out for malicious QR codes. Q what now? QR codes are small, pixelated codes meant to be scanned by a smartphone’s camera. Best to avoid them. 9. Don’t fork over extra info. If a site starts asking for out-of-the-ordinary personal data, like Social Security numbers or password security questions, slam on the brakes. 10. Tighten up security before you shop on Cyber Monday. Make sure all software on your computer is up-to-date, including your OS. And if you don’t already have it, install a cybersecurity program. Ferns Computer Services has been in business in Ferns since May 2007. Established by David Pohludek, it has a huge clientele base all over Co. Wexford and beyond.

Bega’s charity day

Bega

bega barber on Wafer Street, Enniscorthy, held the latest of his regular charity days in his barber shop on Monday 13th November. As always the takings on the day were donated to a local charity. After canvassing people’s opinions on which local charity should benefit, it was decided that all donations

should be given to help children with Type 1 Diabetes attending Wexford General Hospital. The total amount collected on the day and in a follow-up raffle was an impressive €530. Bega was helped on the day by his colleagues, Himo and Jo, and guest barbers Owen Buggy, Julian Strain, and Carina McLoughlin.

Remember that for Fridays and Saturdays appointments can be made with Bega himself on www.begabarber.ie. If you don’t have an appointment those days, don’t worry – Bega’s colleagues Himo and Jo will be cutting on those days also and will look after you. on Monday 6th November last, friendships and connections were certainly made with Taiwan as Town Manager liz hore hosted an event at Enniscorthy Castle for the Taiwan ambassador to ireland Mr. Simon S.K. Tu. James Browne TD, Keith Doyle Chairman and fellow Councillors of Enniscorthy Municipal District, representatives of Enniscorthy Chamber and Enniscorthy Business Association, Bishop Brennan along with members of the clergy Fr. John Carroll and Fr. Odhran Furlong, and Director of Services John Carley were on hand to extend the warmest of welcomes to Mr. Tu and encouragement to him to establish both food and tourism links between Wexford and Taiwan. President of the Chamber Maree Lyng suggested that Enniscorthy might be twinned with a town in Taiwan to copper-fasten the connection saying, ‘Over lunch myself and Mr. Tu have been discussing the significance of food and culture to both the Irish and the Taiwanese. We have a lot in common that can be shared.’ Enniscorthy Chairman Keith Doyle extended an invitation to Mr. Tu to return to Enniscorthy for the Rockin Food Festival in August. ‘Enniscorthy’, he said, ‘has become the Town of

Festivals in the South East and Taiwan is known for its love of Festivals, dance and food and our August Festival incorporates all of these elements. So do come back and join us in August 2018.’ Before calling on Mr. Tu to address the Castle gathering Liz Hore thanked Enniscorthy Historical Re-enactment Society who formed a Guard of Honour f o r M r. Tu ’ s a r r i v a l a n d Enniscorthy Vocational College who provided two members from their Youth Orchestra – Conor Kenny on Tin Whistle and Rhian Tyrrell Wright on Concert Flute, who entertained the Ambassador with some beautiful traditional and classical melodies. Mr. Tu said that he had been completely blown away by the wonderful welcome at Enniscorthy Castle and had great hopes for future relations between Taiwan and Enniscorthy and Wexford. ‘We have many, many similarities with the Irish people’, he said, ‘we both love good food, good music and dance and both nationalities like to smile and have fun. I l o o k f o r w a rd t o v i s i t i n g Enniscorthy and Wexford many times during my stay in Ireland.’ Mr. Tu was then given a tour of the Castle by former resident David Hasslachler. – Maria Nolan

Third-level campus for Wexford a step closer plans by Carlow institute of Technology for the development of a third level campus in Wexford Town moved a step closer to realisation on 13th November when the members of Wexford County Council unanimously adopted a motion to rezone the candidate site for educational purposes. Plans to develop the 35 acres into a full-scale third level campus have been in progress for some time, following the decision in 2016 of the Higher Education Authority to grant permission to the Institute of Technology to acquire a greenfield site on the Newtown Road, close to County Hall. The creation of a technological university for the Southeast by Carlow IT and

welcomed as evidence of continued support for the project and offers reassurance that plans to develop Wexford’s first purpose-built third level campus remain firmly on track and are proceeding as planned. Since its opening in 1995, the current Wexford Campus has been based at the St Peter's site on Summerhill Road, leasing the premises from the Diocese of Ferns, and more recently, opened its School of Art and Design on Hill Street in Wexford town. The campus offers a range of programmes from Higher Certificates to Masters Degrees in Business, Humanities, Art, Cultural Heritage and Computing. Currently, 850 full-time and part-time learners are studying at the campus. n

Cllr Johnny Mythen, Mary-lou McDonald, liadh Ni Riada MEP and Stephen Keegan at the Sinn féin general election convention held in ferns on 2nd November.

Sinn fein held their general election convention in the historical town of ferns on 2nd November. A large crowd attended including vice president of Sinn Fein Mary Lou Mc Donald T.D. and Liadh Ni Riada M.E.P. Ireland South. Cllr Johnny Mythen was unanimously selected by all Sinn Fein cumanns in Wexford to go forward as their candidate in the next general election. Cllr Mythen said, "I am very humbled but also very proud to accept the nomina-

tion, we were very unlucky not to take a seat on the last occasion with a mere 31 votes separating myself and Paul Kehoe TD. I believe the next time round we can take a seat in County Wexford. The party support is growing at a good steady rate and we are in the process of acquiring a fulltime office in Enniscorthy, we also have a strategic election plan in place, so things are looking bright for the future." “The reason for our early convention is a simple one. We believe a general election can

be called at any moment because the current government’s position is a volatile one. Relying on a motley crew of independents and subject to a confidence and supply deal that requires a nod from Fianna Fail on every piece of legislation or bill passed. “A good example of this is the election of two Fine Gael Taoisigh supported by a party that is claiming to be the main opposition.” Cllr Mythen concluded with a quote from Benjamin Franklin, "If you fail to plan then you plan to fail." n

Lest we forget They shall not grow old as we that are left grow old. Age shall not weary them not the years condemn. At the going down of the sun and in the morn We will remember them. And they were rememb e re d o n S a t u rd a y 11 t h November, at the 11th hour, on the 11th day of the 11th month at Market Square, Enniscorthy, when the names of 102 men from the town and district who left their homes and families over 100 years ago to fight in the Great War and never returned, were read aloud by members of Enniscorthy Historical Re-enactment Society as part of a one-day event to commemorate the 99th Anniversary of Armistice Day. The day which began with the laying of a wreath at the War Memorial Plaque at St. Mary`s Church and a prayer for all the Enniscorthy dead by Reverend Nicola Halford, followed by a

dignified and solemn ceremony at Market Square, beginning with the reading of that beautiful and emotive poem In Flanders Fields by Town Manager Liz Hore, a lament by piper Liam Doyle, a Roll Call of Honour by Maria Nolan and Graham Cadogan, a very moving poem penned and recited by Kay Doyle for her late father Thomas Colfer and a Reverse Arms respectfully and meticulously performed by members of Enniscorthy Historical Re-enactment Society for all who fought and died in that war to end wars. From there it was on to the Athenaeum where a Living History Exhibition provided by EHRS, Grainne Doran C o u n t y A rc h i v i s t , L o rd Edward`s Own and Ashbourne ee-enactment groups attracted over 300 visitors with many of the families of those who fought and died in the Great War attending and were delighted

and most appreciative with the opportunity to finally be able to speak proudly and openly of their family member in WW1. It was moving and extremely interesting to hear their stories. Many of the young men from the town and beyond left for a variety of reasons, some were part of the 100,000 who went with Redmond

believing that if they helped Britain to win the war for the freedom of small nations then she might finally agree to grant Independence to our own small nation, others went for the adventure and excitement and many went simply to put food into the mouths of their families. But for whatever reason

they left they were part and parcel of the fabric and the history of this town and deserve to be acknowledged and remembered. Enniscorthy Historical Re-enactment Society were delighted with the response to this commemoration – the first of its kind in the town and look forward to building a bigger and better

event for the 100th Anniversary of Armistice Day in 2018. The programme of events for the day concluded that evening with an excellent concert by Brendan McQuaile at the Athenaeum - March Away My Brothers - the story of Irish soldiers and their music in the Great War. – Maria Nolan

A festive floral feast i had my first ever experience of flower arranging on a grand scale on Wednesday 15th November attending the Wexford garden & flower Club Christmas gala event at the riverside park hotel and to say that i was blown away would be a serious understatement. From the very first moment I was mesmerisingly immersed in a festive, floral feast as adjudicator Frances McDonald guided me through the amazing yuletide extravaganza of fabulous floral arrangements before Chairperson Helen Battigan welcomed all and introduced the special guest for the evening, President of NIGFAS – Northern Ireland Group of Flower Arrangement Societies – Joan Lockhart. A fascinating woman who kept the large Riverside audience enthralled and completely captivated for the entire evening. To say that there was hardly a sound at times from over 200 women is indicative of the wonderful demonstration given by Joan and the interesting and amusing stories that she recounted throughout about her experiences representing Ireland in Barbados and Japan. Joan is creative, extremely artistic, articulate and funny and the evening passed swiftly in an exquisite haze of colour, beauty and fragrance reminis-

cent of a time less hurried and certainly more elegant. The evening was themed ‘Christmas Is’ and as it is many different things to many different people there was a myriad of designs from club members to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the Club and the impending seasonal festivities. The standard of the competition was excellent according to expert Joan Lockhart making it very difficult to choose winners, so all who entered should be very proud of themselves, Joan concluded, complimenting the Wexford Club on being one of the largest and most active in the country and wishing all its 380 members a very merry and flower filled Christmas. – Maria Nolan

Changes could impact negatively on independent councillors as an independent Councillor serving the town and district of Enniscorthy for the last three years and previously as a Town Councillor for 15 years, John o’rourke has reacted angrily to news that Minister Eoghan Murphy TD is looking at the possibility of once again changing council boundaries which, he believes, would favour the established parties and make it a harder for independent-thinking people to get elected.

“I say to the Minister, the way forward is to reintroduce a town council who will look after the affairs of the town with no representative doublejobbing on both town and county council. Commissioner Phil Hogan left a mess, got a plum job and the people of our towns were left behind.” Cllr O’Rourke is calling on Minister Murphy to: “Fix the housing crisis and leave home town governance to the people who know and can help their own communities.” n

Many people bought tickets for the event even though they were unable to attend. “The generosity of everybody has been astonishing and I find it impossible to find words to express my gratitude,” said Ciaran Sheridan, Chairperson of Friends of Wexford General Hospital.

M r. A i d a n B u c k l e y, Consultant Cardiologist at Wexford General Hospital spoke about the absolute necessity of having MRI, a resource that every major hospital should now have on site. Bank of Ireland staff in all seven branches across Co Wexford were thanked for holding a coffee morning which raised over €3,500 in aid of the MRI Now appeal. Ciaran Sheridan of Friends of Wexford General Hospital concluded by saying: “A sponsored run, a coffee morning or any event that will raise valuable funds, big or small, will go a long way to helping us hit our goal and secure an MRI for Wexford. Achilles on Achill The warm hospitality of the people of the West of Ireland and in particular the Islanders on Achill Island was the central theme of Achilles in Achill at the Athenaeum at the beginning of November. The 3 Act play set on Achill in the 1950s was written, produced and directed by the very talented singer and musician Maura Flannery and was

reminiscent of all the wonderful amateur drama in all the parish halls around the country in times past and enjoyed by actor and audience alike. The Captain and crew of a Greek ship are stranded on Achill and taken in by local woman Alice Mooney who just happens to own and run the island’s public house and amid the Uzo and the Whiskey

(spelt with an e for excellent!) the shenanigans begin. Well done to Maura and her cast, in particular the young members Brianna McGrath Furlong and Niamh Crohurst who displayed not just their acting ability but also their beautiful, strong melodious voices, these are two to watch for the future for sure. – Maria Nolan The cast including Maura Flannery (standing, third from right).

A Parallel Universe Entering the Riverside Park Hotel on 4th November last one could be forgiven for feeling that they were entering a parallel universe as they were met in the foyer by all forms of cosmic characters brandishing all kinds of florescent, ancient and futuristic weaponry. It was all part of the Cosmic Rebels Conference organised by local artist Ed Doyle and incorporating all kinds of cosmic trivia and memorabilia. A first ever for Enniscorthy, Ed is to be highly commended for bringing this colourful, imaginative world

to our town. The Seamus Rafter Suite in the Riverside Park Hotel was transformed into a magical cosmic wonderland enchanting both the young and the not so young as Dark Knights, Space Invaders, Ghostbusters, Wonderwomen and Predators roamed, mixed, mingled and posed for photos with the hundreds of fans who attended the event, to marvel and revel in all things ‘other worldly’. Science Fiction, Fantasy and Horror – an inspired combination and Ed said that he was ‘blown away by the

response to the Conference, this is definitely a keeper’. It most certainly is Ed and you will need an even bigger arena for next year’s event. – Maria Nolan

Bellefield party continues Following a week of fabulous celebration in the wake of the Starlights capturing the Senior Football title, Bellefield continued to party with the annual end of season Underage Nursery party and the Michael Foley Annual Bursary Table Quiz, along with hosting the Leinster Junior Football clash between Crossabeg/ Ballymurn and Multy-farnham of Westmeath. U n f o r t u n a t e l y, Crossabeg/Ballymurn were beaten by the visitors by the narrowest of margins, but that was the only glitch on an otherwise fun weekend with U/6s, U/8s and U/10s enjoying a most successful afternoon organised by Adrian Fenlon and his wonderful

crew of Pepi Coady, Paul O`Reilly, Stephen Murphy, Sarah and Ken Larkin and many others who provided not just an excellent end of season bash but have given the children a tremendous year of fun and participation, instilling in them a sense of Club and a love for our games of hurling and football. The Annual Michael Foley Bursary Table Quiz provided the fun and games for the adult members on Friday night with the winning team of Cathal Kearney and Paul and Ava Cullen dropping a single point, scoring a total of 89 out of a possible 90. A fantastic result and most deserving winners. Now in its 10th year the Michael Foley Bursary Fund goes to assist students from

Enniscorthy CBS with 3rd Level Education expenses and is a marvellous tribute to Michael and to his family, friends and teammates that it continues to grow and flourish. The Table Quiz, one of several events organised each year by the dynamic duo, Jim and Phil Kearney, raised €1,169 for the Bursary Fund and provided a most enjoyable evening of camaraderie and catch-up for Michael’s many friends and teammates. The next event on the Bursary Calendar is the Annual Pudding Run on Stephen’s Day, leaving Bellefield GAA Complex at 11am. A great way to shake off the Christmas cobwebs so put it in the diary now. – Maria Nolan

2018 CALENDAR WILL REDUCE LOCAL CHURCH DEBT

L-R: Photographer Liz Wildes and Fr Paddy Banville at the launch. Pic: Dee O’Leary.

At the launch of the St Senan’s Parish 2018 Calendar L-R: Cllr John O’Rourke, Fr Paddy Banville, Eric Barron (Lions Club), Liz Hore (Enniscorthy Municipal District Manager), Rev Nicola Halford, Cllr. Willie Kavanagh. Pic: Dee O’Leary.

A new 2018 calendar depicting 12 scenic views of beautiful Enniscorthy from the photographic collection of Liz Wildes, was launched on Friday 17th November by Enniscorthy Town Manager, Liz Hore. The calendar with a print run of 750 copies is retailing at €10 with all proceeds going to help clear the outstanding debt on St. Senan’s Church. Sponsored by Alcast Motor Factors and supported by C&R Print, the calendar features a series of stunning views of Enniscorthy town and surrounding countryside and is aimed at capturing a segment of the Christmas calendar market. It is being viewed as an ideal Christmas gift, particularly for Enniscorthy people living away from home, and is certainly a ‘must purchase’ for people interested in preserving for posterity the ever changing images of the town.

Printed in magnificent colour on 170 gram gloss paper with a laminated cover, the calendar will evoke happy memories for many with its outstanding images of town landmarks including The Aquaduct at St. John’s, the 21 Steps in The Shannon, and Brownswood House, the former home of world renowned designer, Eileen Grey. The January image features a remarkable scenic view of Enniscorthy nestling in the shadow of a shrouded Blackstairs Mountain range with St. Aidan’s Cathedral dominating the tranquil landscape, while an all too rare picture of Enniscorthy Railway Station is brought vividly to life as the February image of the calendar. The Market Square is splendidly captured through the lens of Liz Wildes with its urban beauty brought very

much to fore in the March offering. Oliver Sheppard’s iconic monument of Fr. John Murphy and a Croppie is a proud reminder of Enniscorthy’s past and adds considerably to the offering. April’s image of the interior of St. Aidan’s Cathedral with its arched columns and the Book of the Gospels resting on the Altar is a fitting tribute to a Faith that has endured the test of time. The River Slaney and its permanent flock of geese takes pride of place for the month of May while a heretofore unpublished picture of the tower atop Vinegar Hill captures the magnificence of the surrounding countryside and forms the backdrop for the month of June. The East side of Enniscorthy, taken from the roof of Enniscorthy Castle and showing lush vegetation is evocative of warm summer

days and is wholly appropriate for the month of July. Lush vegetation is also featured in the August image as the River Slaney, famed in song and story, makes its way through the town on its relentless journey to the sea. September features an imposing view of the new St. Aidan’s Primary School and is a timely reminder of the importance of education in the lives of young people, while October depicts a series of images well known to all natives of the town. The final resting place of Enniscorthy’s dead, St. Mary’s Cemetery, forms the backdrop of a magnificent image of The Calvary and is a clear reminder that November is the Month of the Holy Souls, while the Birth of Christ and the joy of Christmas is illustrated in the December image which features the crib in St. Senan’s Parish Church.

FOR THE LOVE OF SANTA ... NO MORE SOCKS! GIVE THE GIFT OF MEMORIES!

A large gathering was present for the launch on Friday night including many of the town’s public representatives and parishoners from St. Senan’s Parish. Rev. Fr. Paddy Banville, Parish Administrator, said he was overwhelmed by the quality of the finished project. He praised the work of photographer Liz Wildes and said her keen eye for detail and her photographic skills graphically captured the essence of her subject in a way few could have imagined. Fr. Banville also referred to the contribution made by Padraic Donohoe of Alcast Motor Factors and Michael Roche of C&R Print and said their collective input, along with others, had made the project cost neutral meaning that all monies raised from the sale of calendars would go directly towards reducing the outstanding debt on the parish church.

PlEaSE SuPPoRt St SENaN’S PaRiSh By PuRchaSiNG a calENdaR FoR €10. An ideal Christmas gift for anyone with connections with Enniscorthy. The calendar can be got in: ● St Senan’s Parish Office (they can post it anywhere in the world for you). ● St Aidan's Cathedral Parish Office. ● O'Callaghans Centra Templeshannon.

Town Manager, Liz Hore, said the images contained in the calendar showed Enniscorthy in the best possible light and she was satisfied the calendar would become a much sought after collector’s item. Housing being delivered At a Special Meeting of Wexford County Council held on 10 November, senior housing officials confirmed that the implementation of the Council’s ambitious Housing Programme is proceeding as planned. The Government’s Housing Strategy 2020 has an Exchequer funding commitment of €5.7bn over the lifetime of the Strategy, and Wexford County Council expects to spend in excess of €200 million from this fund in the delivery of its Social Housing Programme 2017 to 2019. All of the targets set out in the Council’s three-year Programme are expected to be achieved, with almost 2,800 social housing units to be delivered in County Wexford in the period 2017 to 2019. At the Special Meeting,

Director of Housing and Community Services John Carley and Senior Housing Officer Padraig O’Gorman presented a detailed Progress Report to the Meeting. The Report outlined the various initiatives available to those seeking housing support and showed that strong progress had made by the Council in the delivery of each aspect of the Programme, including Construction, Leasing, Housing Assistance Payment (HAP), Rental Assistance Scheme, Voluntary Housing Bodies, Purchases, Turnkey Projects, Repair and Lease, Part V and others. The Report highlighted the obligation of the Council to obtain Departmental approval to each of the four stages in the delivery of a new housing project, including approval to

advance the scheme, approval to commence detailed design, approval of detailed design and cost estimates and approval of the tender report. The Report indicated that delays in receiving approvals had been reduced of late with a marked improvement in turnaround times in relation to all schemes on hand. The Special Meeting was also attended by representatives of a number of voluntary Housing Agencies who provide social housing in County Wexford, including Respond, Clúid, Co-Operative Housing Ireland, Tuath and Oaklee Housing. These Agencies also provided an update to the meeting regarding their current operations and outlined their plans to provide further social housing in a number of Wexford locations over the next two years. n

Renua’s O’Donoghue launches his election campaign At his Renua Dáil launch in Enniscorthy on 1st November, Gerald O’Donoghue, Dáil Candidate, highlighted the deficits now affecting Wexford. Mr Gerald O’Donoghue expressed alarm that Wexford Council Council’s submission to the National Development Strategy specifically supports the Waterford Submission while the Waterford City/County Council does not even mention Wexford but looks towards

Enniscorthy blood donations

Cork and Limerick for its future development. The National Development Strategy includes the need for a university in order to develop education and job creation. He further asked why when efforts were made to introduce a University no support was forthcoming. On mental health he wanted to know why our TDs allowed the mental facilities in Wexford to be moved to Waterford causing great distress

to families, especially when the model for good mental health is to keep the family support close. Also, why is Ireland reluctant to sign up to the UN’s declaration on Human Rights for the disabled? The question of housing was another question posed from the floor and John Leahy (Renua) outlined their policy. However, an interesting initiative was voiced from the floor by Mr Michael Byrne, Credit Union Manager, where

he stated that Credit Unions could help people to obtain mortgages if the Central Bank did not apply such rigid restrictions. Mr O'Donoghue concluded by stating that his team are currently carrying out further in-depth research on the many deficits in education, jobs and health, all of which have been suffered by our county due to decades of neglect by all parties. His intention is to offer the electorate actionable pro-

posals to urgently address these issues should he be elected to Dáil Éireann. Dáil candidate, Gerald O'Donoghue, intends to widely consult in his research and will issue public statements and actions which will enable Wexford to gain its fair share of national development funding in order to promote high value jobs for its people. This, he believes, will address the worrying brain drain from our county. n

Te d a n d A i d a n B y r n e ’s Renewable Energy Limited operates a family-owned woodchip processing and logistics business from their yard in Chapel, Clonroche. They became involved in the biomass industry in 2003

following the collapse of the sugar beet industry in Ireland. The operation of the business involves the conversion of logged timber into woodchip fuel which is then dispatched to their customers to be burned as biomass fuel.

Over the past ten years the Byrnes have managed to create three full-time employment positions and two parttime positions within the company. The biomass industry represents a real opportunity to

generate employment and economic activity within rural communities while at the same time providing a substantial and sustainable contribution to the reduction of Ireland's dependence on imported carbon fuels.

The Byrnes were delighted to welcome An Taoiseach Leo Varadkar, Minister Paul Kehoe, Minister Michael Darcy and Minister Andrew Doyle to visit ther plant in Clonroche at the beginning of November. n

Invite to County Major award for The Wilds Wexford students Grow It Yourself (GIY) and Cully & Sully are searching for Ireland’s best young food entrepreneurs. Secondary school students across the country are being invited to take part in the new ‘GROW 2 CEO' competition which combines food growing and entrepreneurship to inspire students to grow their own food, create a soup recipe using what they have grown and develop a potential new business. Through this initiative, growing kits will be delivered to 21,000 students across the country that apply to take part in the 2018 competition. The kits will include everything the students need to grow vegetables including the seeds, pots and soil, plenty of expert growing tips from GIY and lots of SOUPort from Cully & Sully. Students are asked to pair up to undertake the challenge. Throughout the ‘GROW 2 CEO' competition, students will be allocated a series of challenges. In the final phase, they will be asked to enter the details of their new recipes and business plans for the judging phase. Six student teams will then be selected for the competition shortlist. These finalists will be invited to a ‘Dragon's Den' style

pitch scenario at the home of GIY, GROW HQ in Waterford on May 18, 2018, where the winning duo will be selected and crowned ‘GROW 2 CEO' Champions. The winning students will be awarded a prize pot of €5,000 which includes a €3,000 food garden for their school, 2 iPads for the winning team of two students and the winning teacher will receive an overnight trip to Ballymaloe. The winning class will also all get a cool Cully & Sully hoodie!! Registration for participation in the competition is open from November 8th, 2017 until February 28th, 2018 with the grand final set to take place at GROW HQ on May 18th, 2018. School students and teachers planning to participate in this competition can now sign up to take part via cullyandsully.com/ourgarden n

In early November, The Wilds restaurant in Enniscorthy received the wonderful news that it has been awarded “Best in Ireland 2018” in the annual McKennas Guides. Owner Paula Asple says: “To say that we are happy about it is probably an understatement. Making it into the McKennas Guides is the ultimate reward and recognition of all our hard work and everything we do. It is all down to our brilliant team who inspire me every single day. They are such a dedi-

cated, hardworking and creative bunch of people who really give it their all. There is no doubting that this is a tough industry in which

to work. Review sites are so subjective, and while providing some encouragement in the positive reviews, the disparaging remarks in the negative reviews can be really hurtful. It's hard not to take these personally when people are criticising your life's work… I wish people would think about how damaging their words can be sometimes… That is why receiving this type of award is so important in our industry. It helps us to know that there is a standard to work towards and main-

tain, and that it is based on a more objective approach. Thank you John & Sally McKenna for making this so.” n

A Letter of Intent pertaining to the establishment in Enniscorthy of a u.N. Economic Commission for Europe Centre of Excellence for Education in High Performance Buildings was s i g n e d i n We x f o r d i n November. The Centre of Excellence, to be located on Wexford County Council land at Killagoley, Enniscorthy, will help in the development of standards that will improve energy efficiency in buildings and dramatically reduce emissions. The Minister for Housing, Planning and Local Government, Eoghan Murphy TD travelled to Wexford for the signing ceremony which took place in the Council Chamber at County Hall. The document was signed by Scott Foster, Director, United Nations, Economic Commission for Europe, Mr. John Hegarty, Chairman, Wexford County Council, Mr. Tom Enright, Chief Executive, Wexford County

Council, and Mr. Tomas O’ Leary, Managing Director of nZEBRA (nearly Zero Energy Buildings Resource Agency) before Minister Murphy penned his name as official witness to the historic document. Members and officials of Wexford County Council were present for the brief ceremony which took place against a backdrop of American, Canadian, Irish and United Nations flags – America and Canada also having been selected by the United Nations for the location of Centres of Excellence. The design of the proposed Enniscorthy Centre is at an advanced stage and planning permission for the 37,000sq.ft. structure is expected to be lodged with Wexford County Council in early December. It is hoped construction will commence in early March 2018 and that the Centre will be operational by the end of next year. While in Wexford Minister Murphy also officially opened

Ireland’s Inaugural World nZEBRA Forum in Clayton White’s Hotel which was attended by over 200 delegates from both at home and abroad. The Forum dealt with all aspects of nZEB (nearly Zero Energy Buildings) and the implications for the construction industry after the mandatory introduction of nZEB compliance regulations in 2018 for all public buildings and 2020 for all other forms of construction. Minister Murphy said it was fitting the Forum was taking place in Wexford, the county where the first nearly Zero Energy Buildings local authority housing scheme was developed. He described the scheme as an ‘exemplar one’ which demonstrated the very real quality of life benefits that the mandatory nZEB requirements, which his Department is currently working on, will have for tenants and homeowners. Minister Murphy pointed out that from December 2020, all

new buildings in Ireland and across Europe will require to be nZEB compliant, while new buildings owned and occupied by Public Authorities will be required to achieve this standard by the end of next year. Saying the public sector is required to lead by example in all areas of energy efficiency, The Minister said he was very impressed to see that some public authorities – an obvious reference to Wexford County Council – have decided to be even more proactive and to support nZEB developments well in advance of any legal requirement for them to do so. The Minister went on to deal with a number of issues including the National Planning Framework, Climate Change and the transition to Electric Vehicles before concluding by saying he was in no doubt that, with the private and public sectors working together, Ireland will achieve a zero carbon future for the generations to come. n

Strategic and Economic Investment On 21st November in the Riverside Park Hotel in Enniscorthy, Tony Larkin, Director of Planning & Economic Development in Wexford County Council made a presentation on the “Strategic & Economic Investment Programme for County Wexford”. The event was supported by Wexford County Council, Enniscorthy & District Chamber and Enniscorthy Business Association. Light refreshments were provided from 6pm to 6.30pm allowing for networking opportunities and the presentation itself ran from 6.30pm to 8.00pm. The interactive presentation on the future development plans for Co. Wexford generally and Enniscorthy in particular brought attendees up to speed on all areas of investment and expansion in terms of new business opportunities, infrastructural changes and ideas worth sharing. Maree Lyng, Enniscorthy & District Chamber President and Elizabeth Hore, District

Manager Enniscorthy Municipal District, also spoke at the wellattended event. We’ll include a detailed article next month on all the promising developments coming down the tracks for Enniscorthy. n At the presentation on the “Strategic & Economic Investment Programme for County Wexford”, top right: Fr Odhran Furlong, Michael Bennett, Jarlath Glynn. VET DIARY FOR DEC

with the Moyne Veterinary Hospital This month, Joe Kavanagh writes of one man and his dog. Every now and then you see a case that’s extraordinary and then again sometimes it’s the client that is the extraordinary one! But this time we had both. Louis is Fred Dinsmore’s little Bichon Frisé dog. We had been treating Louis on and off for a skin condition when he was rushed in as he was losing the use of his hind legs, a hind limb paralysis. The interesting thing in this case is that Fred, Louis’s owner was born with spina bifida and is in a wheelchair. Over the course of treating Louis’s paralysis we used various treatments – conventional and complementary, therefore we got to know Fred and his partner Trish a good bit better. It turns out that he took up playing snooker at 17 and became world champion at 19 years of age, the youngest ever !!! He’s gone on to win World 9 Ball Pool, Europeans 2004. In fact he’s won 6 World Titles, 5 European Titles, 2 European Masters Titles (with 25 European Championship Medals plus 12 World Championship Medals in total). He is one of the most successful athletes of all time. He is the only player in any division, able bodied or disabled, to have won world titles in totally different cue sports. So we have a multiple world champion on our doorstep, who doesn’t seem to get either Recognition or more importantly Sponsorship. He is seemingly second to Katie Taylor as being the most successful Irish athlete of all time and he lives here in Wexford. I’d like to properly congratulate him on his achievement from all here at the Moyne Veterinary Clinic and if there is any generous sponsor out there he or she might like to help further this man on his quest for excellence. You’ll be happy to hear Louis, his dog, is back to full strength too. We wish to say Thank You to all Our Clients for your Continued Loyalty Joe Kavanagh M.V.B. (left), Marie Neville with and wish you a Very Happy Christmas Louis the dog, Anna Keeling, Lauren Bolger and & Prosperous New Year. n Fred Dinsmore.

President Donald J. Trump has opened the door to expanded sport hunting of some of the world's most beloved — and imperiled — animals: Africa's elephants and lions. Near the turn of the 20th century, Africa was home to between three and five million elephants. Now less than half a million remain. Africa's lions have seen similar declines, with lion numbers declining by 42 percent in just the last 20 years. To save these iconic animals from extinction, the Obama administration banned the importation of elephant trop h i e s f ro m Z a m b i a a n d Zimbabwe and made importing lion pelts and other trophies more difficult.

Donald Trump Jnr displays the severed tail of a killed elephant

Now President Trump — whose sons have boasted pub-

licly of killing rare animals in Africa — has reversed this animal-saving ban. This reversal will almost inevitably increase poaching of these rare animals. According to Jeffrey Flocken of the International Fund for Animal Welfare: “When a specie’s greatest value is as a dead trophy, its days will inevitably be numbered, just as they are when the value of their parts – like ivory tusks, tiger skins, or rhino horn – make protection from poachers nearly impossible." The move is also squarely at odds with public opinion in the US. 82% of Americans surveyed support banning lion trophies, and 83% support banning elephant trophies. n

Banned – wild animals in circuses Minister for Agriculture Michael Creed has signed new regulations banning the use of wild animals in circuses from January 2018. "The use of wild animals for entertainment purposes in circuses can no longer be permitted. This is the general view of the public at large and a position I am happy to endorse," he said. He described

the move as progressive, adding that it was reflective of the Government's commitment to animal welfare. The decision to implement the regulations on 1 January 2018 was taken to allow "a modest lead in period to allow for alternative arrangements to be made for the animals in question," the minister explained.

He welcomed the fact that many local authorities had shown their concerns by not allowing public land to be used by circuses featuring wild animals. He said: "While the retirement of the small numbers of wild animals in Irish circuses might seem like a loss I am confident that this move will do more to secure the future of the circus community.”

A local contributor looks at life today in Enniscorthy and beyond Christmas shopping Here we go again. It’s hard to believe that Christmas is nearly upon us. Seems like only a few weeks ago since we had it all before. Once again the message this year should be for all of us to try and do our shopping at home. By that I mean in Enniscorthy and Co. Wexford in particular. Each year we make this appeal and quite frankly make no apology for it. The reason is obvious. Our local shops and businesses keep the wheels of the local economy turning. They employ thousands of local people, they pay millions in local rates and water and other charges and effectively pay a large proportion of the wages, salaries and pensions of our local government employees. If all of that is not enough, local businesses are competitive price wise and more importantly quality wise. Quite frankly there is little need, anymore, for people to travel to Dublin or elsewhere to purchase goods at any time of year, much less at Christmas. As far as online is concerned those using it must remember the pitfalls. Many local businesses operate their own websites and of course there is no problem whatever dealing with them. If anything goes wrong, such as incorrect size, colour not right etc., a local

website, as will a local retailer, look after you and you have all the usual consumer protections. Buying online from unknown websites is just crazy and foolhardy. How many times have we seen disaster purchases from websites with no comeback whatever. The message therefore is, “Please support local business this Christmas”. By doing so you are contributing to your own and your children’s future. Driving Ireland must have the worst and most inconsiderate drivers in the world. Properly using roundabouts seems to be beyond the comprehension of most drivers, and the oul fellows and oul wans are the biggest offenders here. In fairness to our younger drivers, apart from the tendency of young males to drive like madmen, they at least understand how to traverse through junctions and roundabouts. Another bugbear is the total refusal of our agricultural friends to have any respect whatever for other road users. The I.F.A. and road authorities are continuously advertising, calling on famers to pull in and allow traffic to pass. Waste of time. These guys hog the road, often pulling badly lit trailers at night, travelling at forty kilometres an

View from the Hill hour without any regard for the twenty vehicles held up behind them. I don’t know what the solution to this is because no one seems to be learning, or more important, want to learn. next general eleCtion Recent events would indicate that, regardless of Fianna Fáil’s three-year deal with Fine Gael, we may have a general election next year. The view is that the danger to government may come from the likes of the Independent Alliance rather than Fianna Fáil. This is a possibility when you study the makeup of that Alliance. The loose cannon that John Halligan

of Waterford is, could bring about an election at any time. In the past Halligan, who apparently believes that aliens exist, has made statements and speeches which attacked his Fine Gael colleagues in government so viscously that the opposition were even surprised. However the numbers in the Dáil, being what they are, gave him immunity from sanction. There are others in that Alliance who may get cold feet as the year goes on and begin to think, “If I stay in government will I hold my seat.” This, more than anything else, could see the demise of this government rather than anything the opposition par-

ties, or as mentioned above Fianna Fail may do. Our own local politicians are very aware of this and it is no coincidence that Fianna Fáil are organising their conventions to select Dáil candidates for early next year. I’m sure that other parties will follow but the only issue in Fine Gael will be as to who, if anyone, will accompany the two Ministers of State on the ballot paper. Labour will of course put forward Brendan Howlin, probably as a lone candidate. Sinn Féin will have Johnny Mythen again, bear in mind only literally a handful of votes away from the Dáil last time out, and we will have to wait and see if there will be Independent candidates. Renua has selected Gerald O’Donoghue (I know I haven’t heard of him until now either) so we have to await the Greens and PBP etc. Independent councillor Ger Carthy is unlikely to go again, at least in the next election. The big contest prior to the election will be within Fianna Fáil for nominations. So far we are guaranteed that James Browne, current TD, will stand with Wexford-based councillor Lisa McDonald throwing her hat into the ring at this relatively early stage. Malcolm Byrne of Gorey, a candidate last time out, and

Michael Sheehan of New Ross will almost certainly seek nominations . Interesting times ahead. Christmas again We started with Christmas and we’ll end with it. Gift Vouchers are a very handy gift for all seasons. Christmas , Easter, Birthday or just to say thank you. Most stores and companies who issue vouchers will honour them without any problem and no difficulties arise. However , some businesses have cut off dates and worse still, others have monthly deductions from the value of the voucher. Before handing over your hard earned money check that no such restrictions apply. If there are restrictions well then you know where not to spend your hard earned money. Finally… Happy Christmas and Prosperous New Year to all our readers from “View from the Hill”. Hopefully you have enjoyed the column this past year. Come 2018, at the editor’s discretion, we will again annoy and entertain you with snippets of interest. Thank you for reading the column. n We are often asked: Who is the “View from the Hill” columnist? All we can say is that the author’s surname is NOT Doyle!

MINI CouNTryMaN PHEV reView by CAroline Kidd

The MINI Cooper S E Countryman ALL4 is the MINI brand’s first plug-in hybrid and they have chosen the Countryman crossover to debut this new hybrid technology. The MINI Countryman is a great option for buyers who need more space and practicality than what the classic three door MINI hatch can offer, while it also carries all the attributes of a fashionable crossover with rugged styling and an elevated driving position. The Countryman is already available with a range of petrol and diesel engines but new for 2017 is the Countryman plug-in hybrid. Though the new car market has shrinked in 2017, hybrid sales are up about 70%. It’s clear that buyers are starting to seek alternatives. The MINI Countryman range starts at €32,980 while the plug-in hybrid has a list price of a heftier €42,500, though the SEAI and VRT reduction of a combined €7500 for plug in hybrids brings that down to €35,000. This is a very high spec model and the big boon is that real savings can be made on running costs. ‘ALL4’, MINI’s four wheel drive system, comes as standard, as

every month Bunclody native Caroline Kidd brings you the best from the world of motoring, including car reviews, news and more. Caroline is a member of the irish motoring Writers’ association (imWa) and a jury member for irish Car of the year. you can follow her blog Changing lanes at www.changinglanes.ie.

does a six speed automatic transmission. Under the skin, a 1.5-litre three cylinder engine combines with a lithium ion battery and electric motor to produce a healthy 224hp, while CO2 emissions of 49g/km mean that motor tax is just €170 per year. The beauty of the Countryman plug-in hybrid is that you can charge your Countryman like an electric vehicle from a domestic mains supply or a public charge point for a full charge in 2 to 3 hours. You can drive the car on electric power only for a range of up to 42km. If the battery can be topped up after each journey and you do a short commute or a lot of low speed urban driving then this car has the potential to be very

cheap to run. On longer runs and when the battery power runs out, the car becomes less efficient. On the road, the Countryman plug-in hybrid loses none of the fun-todrive quality of its siblings. It just does it all in near silence. The transmission is super smooth and any switches between engine and electric power are done seamlessly without any disruption to the driving. The lightening quick responses of the steering and resistance to body roll in the corners make the Countryman a fantastic crossover to drive, and there is no shortage of power or in-gear punch with the ‘eboost’ from the electric motor giving the Countryman a 0 to 100kmh time of 6.8 seconds! The car

is comfortable for the most part, though the optional 18” wheels on my test car did contribute to more road noise in the cabin at high speed. Visually, the plug-in hybrid is distinguished from the rest of the Countryman range by some ‘E’ badging, and the Cooper S badge, typically red, is now yellow to denote the electric power. The interior carries a classic MINI design with the centrally mounted 6.5” touchscreen being the main focal point of the cabin. There is also an optional, larger 8.8” screen as part of the Media Pack. For convenience this can be operated by touch or via a rotary controller on the centre console. Other standard equipment includes 17” alloy wheels, silver roof rails, front

fog lights, cloth/leather upholstery, front sport seats, sport leather steering wheel with multifunction controls, cruise control, interior lights package, navigation and rear parking sensors. MINI has managed to package the hybrid tech in the Countryman with minimum disruption to cabin space. The battery is under the rear seat, which has just been slightly raised to accommodate it, but headroom has not been compromised too much. The rear bench however would be more comfortable for two rather than three. The boot is a reasonable good size at 405 litres, with a practical shape and low loading sill. The MINI Countryman is a highly desirable crossover that doesn’t come

cheap, but offers considerable value in the compact premium segment. It’s a high quality product with a distinct personality and a refined and exciting drive. The plug-in hybrid comes at the right time to exploit any swing from diesel in the market, with the potential to be a very economical choice indeed. model tested: mini Cooper s e Countryman all4 Price: €42,500 (€35,000 incl. Enniscorthy under-16 girls continue to impress

tullamore v enniscorthy u16, tullamore, 18th november. Tullamore started very well and had scored their first try in the 10th minute. Enniscorthy girls battled and tackled hard but a very strong team from Tullamore, in the 20th minute, got their second try of the game, and led at half time, Tullamore 10, Enniscorthy 0. The second half couldn't have started any better with the amazing Katie Whelan taking off up the field and over the line to keep Enniscorthy in this very fierce, intense battle. Three minutes later Katie Whelan was in again after a super run which Aoife Codd converted with ease, in very heavy mucky conditions. The Enniscorthy girls continued to impress and a great pass allowed Anna Nolan from the wing to get Enniscorthy’s last try of the day with Aoife Codd also converting. For the remainder of the game the Enniscorthy

defence had to work hard, as did the Tullamore side, both being well matched. Tullamore scored their third try of the game also converting, leaving just two points difference in favour of Enniscorthy with five minutes to go. Could Enniscorthy hold on for those long five minutes? As the final whistle blew the Enniscorthy girls had done it – a great game by two great team. Well done the Enniscorthy girls on a final score of 19-17. team: Abbie Horan Abigail Quigley Ali Murphy Anna Nolan Aoife Codd Ava O Connor Ciara O Leary Eabha Farrell Erin Cahill Eva Green Katie Foley Katie Foley Katie Whelan Kaci o Connor Lauren Delaney Lucy Egan Mia Kelly Mikayla O Leary Miria O Dowd Taragh Cooper Ellen Rogan Eimear Fitzgerald and Faye Larking all under the watchful eye of Eamon Whelan, John Bolger and Colin Cahill. n

Enniscorthy Library

A delightful duo at a recent event in enniscorthy library the audience were treated to readings by the delightful duo of author and poet John mcKenna and local poet paddy Kehoe. Both men having soldiered together, so to speak at rte, as John mcKenna explained before reading from his latest book once We sang like other men. John is the author of 19 novels, short story collections, memoirs, non-fiction and poetry and is a frequent contributor to Sunday Miscellany and read a story about Laz from Once We Sang Like Other Men that has an uncanny similarity to the story of Lazarus from the New Testament with a modern day twist and full of beautiful descriptive phrases - `the moons sister sleeping in the sea`, `the almost living smell of timber` i was lucky to be a member of the audience at the presentation Centre on 17th november and privileged to witness a most excellent performance called a Face in the Crowd written by niall o`muiri, directed by Jim roche and played by a professional group of actors liam hourican, sean Duggan, Clare Barrett, olga Wehrley and Jim roche. This moving piece of theatre was created by the Discover Recover Theatre Project who sourced real stories from real

and `darkness creeps up like a big grey cat, soft and easy`. Paddy Kehoe then treated us to poems about the past and spoke about his parents particularly about his late father saying that it seems to be a common trait among poets as they age that they write about their parents. Paddy read Bree and the Mercy Bell - `telling the time to the awake and the wandering` then he read Father’s Music and the Old Avenger which he referred to as a Ford Avenger only to be told later by a friend that there was no such thing, it was a Hillman Avenger - but the poem remains the same - Paddy said. John McKenna added some of his poetry to the occasion in the form of High Summer – a poem about youthful happiness in Castledermot and the very beautiful love poem A Wedding

A Face in the Crowd

It is impossible not to be moved by this extremely well acted play and you will most certainly leave with a greater understanding of mental health issues and recovery process. I found it interesting on the day when the doors of St. Senan’s Hospital closed for good that each of the characters mentioned being hospitalised during dark periods of their illness with all of them saying that it helped them on the path to recovery. – maria nolan

people with mental health difficulties. The project team of Mairead Connaughton, Niall O`Muiri and Paula Lowney listened to stories of sadness, confusion, loneliness, rebellion, despair, warmth, support and most of all acceptance and from the strands of those stories the play ‘A Face In The Crowd’ was born. And what a play – it is emotive, sad, funny but most

of all powerful with the ability to make you see mental health and recovery in a completely different way. The stories of these lovely, lonely, tormented people will open your eyes to mental health issues like they have never been opened before as they give you an insight on what it is like living with S c h i z o p h re n i a , Acute Depression, Paranoia, Bipolar and Hallucinations.

Some years ago a Standing Order initiative was set up whereby benefactors would sign up to donating €5 per month through their bank account. This was of great benefit to The Athenaeum as it guaranteed a set income. The Athenaeum is now asking people to sign up again and help keep the long-awaited and integral asset to the town alive. Constant bills, standing charges and insurance are very high and any help would be greatly appreciated. Standing Order forms are available at The Athenaeum or phone 087-2637178.

Nicholas Harpur Exhibition HERE is a new photography exhibition by Nicholas Harpur at The Presentation Centre, Enniscorthy. It runs from 24 November 2017 to 19 January 2018. Through his documentation of people, places, and moments, a world of personalities, routines, and habits are revealed. Touching on prospects and questioning the choices people make, in particular, their reasons to stay ‘HERE’. His work invites us into the lives and experiences of others through a careful approach, and although he is very much a part of the situations depicted, Nicholas creates a sense of voyeurism through his documentary style photography. A scary Scorthy experience

Local author and raconteur extraordinaire Caroline busher. Pic: Maria Nolan.

as part of the inaugural halloween Festival at enniscorthy local author and raconteur extraordinaire Caroline Busher, resplendent in the mantle of the Wicked stepmother, brought weird and eerie to the atmospheric, candlelit Castle with gory tales of ghosts, goblins and ghouls. This time the popular children`s author and storyteller was delighting an adult audience and encouraging them to embrace the spirit (if you`ll pardon the pun) of Halloween just as they did as children. And indeed some of her tales about local haunted houses and scary Scorthy stories, along with the

ancient ambience of Enniscorthy Castle went a long way to achieving the ghostly effect. Excellent and fun idea from Enniscorthy Castle and one that should be grown, enhanced and developed.. Many of us would have heard local ghost stories in our youth that could become part of this Scary Scorthy Experience and perhaps even recorded for posterity. I particularly liked the deadly delicious cupcakes that were enjoyed by all with a cuppa when the lights came on. Good one and one to definitely expand, this has tourism potential. – maria nolan

Wexford to fore at Bord Gais Book Awards

Wexford literary Festival is delighted to announce that Chairperson Carmel harrington has been nominated for this year’s Bord gais energy irish Book awards for the second year running. Carmel’s fifth novel, the woman at 72 drury lane, has been shortlisted in the specsavers popular Fiction Book of the year category. Previous winners in this category include Graham Norton, Maeve Binchy, Marian Keyes and Cecelia Ahern, so a prestigious group indeed and well done to the talented author who was listed last year for her fourth novel The Things I Should Have Told You. Irish Times Bestseller, The Wo m a n a t 7 2 D r u r y L a n e remained in the Irish top ten charts for five weeks and is currently a top five Amazon bestseller so there’s no doubt that Carmel is up to the challenge and looking forward to

it. Carmel is a natural storyteller and the book tells the tale of two very different women who are both prisoners in their own homes for very different reasons. Compelling, warm and emotive this novel deals sympathetically with some of the many issues for today’s women and is typical of its author – full of humour, heart and hope. I spoke with Carmel before she headed off on a well earned break and she was delighted to receive the nomination and feels ‘privileged to be shortlisted in such a prestigious award, with writers that I have admired and read for years including Marian Keyes, Patricia Scanlon, Melissa Hill, Ross O`Carroll Kelly and Sinead Moriarity. Whatever happens on the night it is a huge honour to be nominated and I am proud for myself, my family and for Wexford

and the Wexford Literary Festival’. A lovely, vivacious lady who is not only a gifted writer but also a most kind and generous mentor and friend to a large number of new and existing writers in County Wexford and beyond. Now in its 12th year, the Bord Gais Energy Irish Book Awards was founded to celebrate and promote Irish writing to the widest range of readers possible. It will be hosted and filmed by RTE, and Wexford will be well represented with Eoin Colfer, John Banville, Helena Mulkearns and Cat Hogan all nominated. The award winners will be announced on 28th November (just as we go to print) so let’s hope by the time you read this, the 2017 Book Awards will have a purple and gold hue. – maria nolan
