comment Our sincere thanks to Wexford County Council crews and staff, emergency services, Gardaí, Defence Forces, hospital staff, and private individuals with tractors and other machinery, and all who helped in any way to keep the disruption caused by Storm Emma to a minimum. – Frank Corcoran A nice note also from Gorey Sinn Féin Councillor Fionntán Ó Súilleabháin: "While the crisis showed that local government in Ireland is under-resourced to clear rural roads… nevertheless Wexford County Council staff did a great job and Trojan work at all hours with limited resources. Farmers were absolutely heroic, saving the day, as well many others who used their own machinery, and also the many volunteers in housing estates. Great community spirit all round – the Meitheal is alive and well in Co. Wexford… I would like to see some sort of compensation for the high cost of diesel to those who cleared country roads with their own machinery. It’s certainly true that all heroes don't wear capes!"

Tech Tip

spectre and meltdown explained: what's at risk

by DaviD pohluDek Ferns compuTer services

In the first days of 2018, published research revealed that nearly every computer chip manufactured in the last 20 years contains fundamental security flaws. These flaws (being dubbed Spectre and Meltdown) arise from features built into chips that help them run faster and while software patches are available, they may have impacts on system performance. There is as of yet no evidence that these flaws have been exploited in the wild, but such exploits would be difficult to detect, and the flaws are so fundamental and widespread that security researchers are calling them catastrophic. All of the variants of this underlying vulnerability involve a malicious program gaining access to data that it shouldn't have the right to see, and do so by exploiting two important techniques used to speed up computer chips, called speculative execution and caching. Speculative execution essentially involves a chip attempting to predict the future in order to work faster. Caching is a technique used to speed up memory access. Spectre and Meltdown both open up possibilities for dangerous attacks. For instance, JavaScript code on a website could use Spectre to trick a web browser into revealing user and password information. Attackers could exploit Meltdown to view data owned by other users and even other virtual servers hosted on the same hardware, which is potentially disastrous for cloud computing hosts. The fundamental vulnerability exists at the hardware level and cannot be patched. However, most vendors are releasing software patches that work around the problems. Patches have already been rolled out by Intel, Microsoft, Apple, and Google and more are on the way. Since JavaScript in the browser is one particularly dangerous vector for Spectre attacks, it's also important to keep your browsers up to date. Ferns Computer Services has been in business in Ferns since May 2007. Established by David Pohludek, it has a huge clientele base all over Co. Wexford and beyond.

International spotlight on Bunclody Important Dates… bunclody has been selected to represent ireland in the prestigious golden oscars of international Architecture at the venice Architecture biennale 2018. The curators of Ireland’s National Pavilion at the International Architecture Exhibition are submitting an exhibition called Free Market. The theme is exploring the common spaces to be found in market towns and Bunclody is one of 10 towns selected as part of the exhibition. The Free Market theme is exploring how market towns are responding to new developments such as the motorway network and what initiatives have been undertaken to revitalise and restore these towns. The Dublin School of Architecture, DIT, has been working to capture images and interviews with local people about the town. Wexford County Council has been working closely with the Bunclody community who are responding to the economic and social challenges of a rural town with a positive cando attitude and community spirit. Over the past two years there have been a number of notable achievements includ-

ing the inaugural Streams of Bunclody festival last year which will be an annual event every July. Through kind sponsorship by a local business man, a premises was opened to provide a tourist office on the main street thoroughfare operated by local volunteers. Not only has this office provided a strong information and welcome point for tourists but acts along with the wonderful Artbank as a community hub for the area. The new public realm works at the Market Square undertaken by Wexford County Council with support from the community through the Redz

initiative have been a very positive initiative. Redz and WCC have provided €145,000 to the community to date. The enterprise training and grants programme is supporting local jobs in the town. There is Town and Village Renewal funding of €100,000 to support a new food hub. Walks and access to the river Slaney will be developed. Last year all the efforts of the local community, who work in partnership with a range of agencies, was recognised when Bunclody won a special merit award and €1,500 under the Bank of Ireland National Awards for Enterprise Towns works are well underway on a complete revamp of the S m y t h ’s A r r o s h o p i n Enniscorthy with a new 5,000 sq.ft. building which will sit between the existing Lighting shop and the wafer Street shop. The new development will see the total shop size increase to roughly 20,000 sq.ft. making Smyth’s Arro one of the largest retailers in co. wexford. The development will also see a complete renovation of the existing shop to create a

providing national recognition to the community of Bunclody. In Venice in May, Bunclody will be represented by the Chairperson of the Bunclody Town Team, Cllr. Barbara-Anne Murphy, who will be proudly flying the flag for Bunclody and Enniscorthy Municipal District. Following the prestigious exhibition there will be a national roadshow in 2019 followed by a symposium on the market towns. Bunclody will be holding its own exhibition with support from Enniscorthy Municipal District so that local people and agencies who are working together for a shared vision for Bunclody can see the fruits of all their efforts promoting a sense of pride in the town. Enniscorthy Municipal District and the Community Department of the local authority have stated that Bunclody is not just a model of good practice at national level but is now recognised at international l e v e l a t t h e re n o w n e d Architecture Biennale. Bunclody is certainly proving that there is a strong future for rural towns who provide a great sense of community pride, quality of life and can-do attitude. n

Smyth’s Arro on target better flow and customer experience. The Wafer Street shop will be back open again at the beginning of April, just in time for the garden furniture and BBQ season. Following on from that the new build is due for completion in early July. The new layout of the store will make it easier for customers to browse and freely walk between departments.

Saturday, 28th April 2018. St Aidan’s Primary School: Confirmation date to be rescheduled due to Storm Emma. First Holy Communion is Saturday 26th May 2018. St Patrick’s Special School: No Confirmation this year. First Holy Communion is on Friday 1st of June. n

The addition of a new consultation area will facilitate an interior designer to work with customers decorating their homes. Feeding into this will be the addition of wallpaper to the product range. Developing on from the success of "The Cookshop" classes with Janette from Blossom Bakes and based on the positive feedback from customers, Smyth’s Arro aims

to offer further classes. These will include upcycling, gardening classes and DIY classes. So watch this space. Meanwhile it is business as usual while the various works proceed. You can still enter the shop from the carpark through the garden shop and a new corridor will allow you to walk between the garden shop and electrical shop. If you have any trouble finding your way around Bernie or Aidan are at hand to gladly assist you. n

Already, these two institutions cater for in excess of 14,500 students. TUSE will be the first university located in this region. It will be designed to drive regional development, foster innovation, build and retain the skills base in the region. The government has already announced a number of capital investments which will support the TUSE consortium members in their bid to achieve Technological University status. Significant new buildings will be provided in IT Carlow and WIT as part of the Higher

Education PPP programme. In addition, funding has been allocated for the acquisition of a site in Wexford to facilitate the development of a purposebuilt campus for IT Carlow in that location. Enniscorthy wastewater Treatment Plant: The Enniscorthy Wastewater Tre a t m e n t P l a n t w i l l b e upgraded to provide improved treatment standards and capacity which will allow for future economic and population growth in the Enniscorthy area. Flood risk management: Major projects in development include the Enniscorthy Flood Relief Scheme. Social housing: Examples include 40 new homes by Oaklee Housing Trust

at The Moyne, Enniscorthy, 12 at Danescastle, and 10 at Slippery Green in Wexford. A range of national measures will also benefit co. wexford including: The Town and Village Renewal Scheme, LEADER, the Rural Recreation Scheme, the CLÁR P ro g r a m m e , t h e R A P I D Programme and further libraries investment. Rural Water Programme: A range of measures to improve the quality, reliability and efficiency of rural water services infrastructure, including group water schemes and group sewerage schemes. Rural Transport: While there is investment for public transport in rural communities, the main emphasis for investment

is subvention for services for the operation of Public Service Obligation (PSO) routes and the Local Link Programme. Other national measures which will benefit the South East include investment in schools, primary care centres, arts, culture, sports, tourism, the acceleration of the National Broadband Plan, the Targeted Agricultural Modernisation S c h e m e , t h e F o re s t r y Programme, the European Maritime and Fisheries Fund Programme, the second phase of the Regional Enterprise Development Fund involving €30m, a €300m loan fund for businesses of less than 500 employees, nationwide, which are exposed to the impact of Brexit, a Rural Regeneration

and Development Fund for towns and villages with populations of up to 10,000 people, along with rural areas – this fund will provide €1bn nationally over ten years. One critic of the Plan, Cllr Michael Sheehan in New Ross, fears, “Wexford could be left as a permanent commuter county … this could be the death knell for Rural Ireland and especially provincial towns like New Ross and Enniscorthy. Larger towns, including Wexford, will have to compete against cities and designated growth centres for investment and capital infrastructure… all policies will tilt towards Waterford and the Regional Centres first and then Co. Wexford second.” n

Legal Aid Board’s new Wexford centre Pictured at the official opening of the Legal Aid Board’s new Wexford Law Centre, on 23rd February, by Minister Paul Kehoe TD, were L-R: Cathy Hatton, Sarah Kavanagh, Philip O'Leary Chairman Legal Aid Board, Minister Paul Kehoe, Niamh Murran Managing Solicitor, John McDaid CEO Legal Aid Board, Aileen Lacey, Daniel Reddington and Viktoria Dogonadze. The Legal Aid Board is the State agency that provides legal advice and legal representation in civil law cases to persons of limited means, as well as providing the family mediation service which seeks to resolve family disputes without recourse to legal proceedings. The new Law Centre premises, located at the junction of Slaney Street and Temperance Row in Wexford town, will provide an improved environment for clients to consult with a solicitor on what are often difficult personal matters. n

Tackling the scourge of illegal dumping

Local photo taken in February and submitted by one of our readers.

in response to concerns that litter offences may be on the increase across county wexford, wexford county council has launched a series of initiatives aimed at identifying and prosecuting those responsible including the use of mobile ccTv, drones and Satellite Technology to identify offenders. Recent meetings of Wexford County Council have seen the Elected Members expressing concern in relation to what they consider to be worrying levels of indiscriminate dumping incidents. Members have welcomed the assignment of additional resources to the collection of dumped materials, but want officials to consider more innovative means of detection and investigation of these occurrences in an effort to reduce the number of incidents reported. In response, officials in the Council’s Environment Department have recently deployed a range of initiatives which will help identify those responsible for dumping offences and indiscriminate littering. Actions already in place include patrolling by plainclothes litter wardens during “dog walking hours” on established routes to address the growing problem of dog litter. The Council has also engaged private companies to conduct covert CCTV surveillance of litter black spots, while mobile CCTV has also been deployed across the county’s road network to combat the unwelcome and unsightly practice of items of litter being discarded from passing cars. Recent increases in Government funding has also allowed the Council to use drone, satellite and surveillance technology in a bid to try and stop people from illegally dumping rubbish. van’ operations advertising on the internet or through leaflets are also being targeted. At national level, plans to double the current on-thespot litter fine to a hefty €300 is understood to be receiving strong consideration, with the resulting income to be targeted at increasing environmental awareness and creating a significant shift in public attitude and tolerance towards litter and its many forms. Acting Director of Services, Padraig O’Gorman, is confident that the Council’s renewed efforts to identify offenders is already paying dividends. “In 2017, we issued court proceedings against 52 individuals and businesses for litter offences – this is in addition to the 218 on-the-spot which we also issued,” said Mr. O’Gorman. “We currently spend almost €2.8 million annually in managing litter in County Wexford and that does not take into account the appalling damage caused to our tourist economy and our environment. “Wexford County Council has a strong track record when it comes to recovery and removal of dumped materials, and while this continues to be an important part of our litter management plan, it will not solve the underlying issue. A more investigative and punitive approach is clearly also required to remind offenders that we are serious about litter prevention, and that if you do litter, you will be prosecuted.” Mr O’Gorman also confirmed that Wexford County Council will be participating in the recently announced Dept of Communications, Climate Action and the Environment’s Anti-dumping Initiative for 2018. See page 21 for more news on tackling illegal dumping. n

responding to the cabinet decision to call a referendum on the 8th Amendment, rEnuA ireland issued the following press release: RENUA Ireland, uniquely, amongst Irish political parties is Pro-Life. Plans by the government have opened the door to abortion on demand in Ireland. There is no such thing as ‘a little bit of abortion’. However well-intentioned, it is an intellectually dishonest stance. By contrast, RENUA Ireland’s stance is clear. We will be urging the electorate to Choose Life. We stand with mothers and the un-born. Equally. The absence of abortion on demand is a fundamental signifier of the decent society. Despite what happens in referenda, human rights do not change. RENUA Ireland will be in this referendum, the faithful custodian of the human rights of the most powerless in our society. Our chosen role is to be the voice of the voiceless and the defenders of the defenceless. We believe Abortion on Demand discriminates against the unborn; against mothers and children; against those with a disability; against the voiceless and defenceless; against women. We say choose life and leave no child behind. We say the unborn have human rights too.

“CHOOSE LIFE, DEFEND THE UNBORN” – RENUA

Ger O’Donoghue Renua Wexford Dáil Candidate for Co. Wexford

We oppose the steppingstone policy towards full scale abortion on demand. Abortion on demand represents a fundamental act of discrimination against the basic human right to life. It represents an existential threat to the existence of children with disabilities and an attack on the inherent right of every human to life, that this right be protected by law and the freedom from torture, cruel and degrading treatment. We believe a state without abortion on demand is the progressive society. our position is to: ● Say no to the cruel and inhumane treatment of the child. ● Say no to an industrialised, multinational driven abortion industry. ● Say no to secret payments to Pro-Choice groups from abroad. ● Say no to a new culture of death in Irish hospitals. ● Say no to Eugenics and Genetic Engineering. ● Say no to death sentences for the ‘wrong’ children. ● Say no to trusting politicians to protect the unborn. ● Say no to the conspiracy of advocacy groups. Instead we appeal to the electorate to Choose Life. For further information contact Gerald O’Donoghue 085 1571425. n

Minister Paul Kehoe has been a staunch ally of Enniscorthy Drama Group (EDG) since its revival in 2013 and expressed his admiration for the group and the enormous progress it has made in the five short years since inception, becoming recognised on both the local and national scene. Minister Kehoe said that he was delighted to have been instrumental in the resurgence of drama in the town of Enniscorthy which has such a proud tradition in theatre and he wished the group every success on the circuit with Martin McDonagh’s classic play. Enniscorthy Drama is well

pleased to have local hotelier Anton Treacy on board as sponsor for the Beauty Queen of Leenane and Chairman Liam Doyle expressed sincere thanks to Anton, whom he said had no hesitation when approached in pledging his patronage. Anton said he was thrilled to be given the opportunity to support such amazing local talent and looked forward to the new partnership with EDG. One of Enniscorthy’s best known and most eloquent speakers, Jimmy Gahan, was lavish in his praise for the Committee, t h e a c t o r s F i n t a n K e l l y, AnneMarie Whelan, Michelle Whelan and Brendan Robinson, the Director Tom Reddy, the backstage crew and indeed all involved saying, ‘I am deeply honoured to have been chosen to launch the play.’

€360,000 in new funding for Co. Wexford roads Local roads in co. wexford are to receive a €360,000 funding boost, according to minister of State Paul kehoe. The money has been approved as part of the Local improvement Scheme (LiS), which is designed to support the upgrade of non-public rural roads. The funding will allow for the repair and improvement of small roads and laneways leading to local people’s homes and businesses that are not under the normal maintenance of the Local Authorities. Announcing the funding, Minister Kehoe said these roads provide vital access to homes and farms as well as amenities such as lakes, rivers or the sea. “We in Fine Gael know just how important the Local Improvement Scheme is for people who live in rural Ireland. “The Department of Rural and Community Development will provide up to 90% of the

funding through the Local Authorities, with the remaining contribution coming from local residents, or Local Authorities in the case of roads leading to public amenities. “Local Authorities will be asked to revert with details of their improvement projects to the Department of Rural and Community Development by the 23rd of March,” he added. The scheme is administered by Regional Affairs Minister Michael Ring. Minister Ring said: “The upkeep of these roads is a priority for people who live in rural Ireland and this funding, in conjunction with the local community's own resources and the resources of the local authorities, will allow for the maintenance and improvement of many more local roads. “I cannot overstate how important local connectivity is in order to enable rural

Ireland to function well. The Action Plan for Rural Development prioritises improving rural infrastructure and connectivity and continuing to support an LIS scheme is just one of the measures we are taking in that regard. “On that note, I am delighted to see that in the recently announced Capital Plan in Project Ireland 2040, €4.5 billion has been allocated for the maintenance and improvement of local and regional roads. “Project Ireland 2040 also contains €1 billion extra funding for investment in rural communities through the Department of Rural and Community Development. “This Rural Regeneration Fund will lead to significant investment in rural towns, villages and townlands, meaning greater connectivity and enhanced amenities for rural communities.” n

Templeshannon transformation At a very well-attended event in Treacy’s hotel on monday 19th February, wexford county council outlined its innovative plans for the Te m p l e s h a n n o n a r e a o f Enniscorthy over the next 15 to 20 years with works due to begin in 2019/20. Introduced by MC for the evening, Town Manager Liz Hore, Enniscorthy & District Chairman Keith Doyle expressed his enormous enthusiasm for all that is planned for the town in general and for the Templeshannon area in particular, stating that each of the projects – the new Bypass, the Flood Defence Scheme, enhanced public lighting and widening of footpaths, the construction of the new bridge, the new pedestrian foot bridge spanning the river from Slaney Street to the Waterfront Leisure Centre, a new one-way traffic system for Templeshannon and redevelopment of the Train Station are all most significant in their own right, but when taken together as a whole will act as a game-changer for the town enabling us to compete for footfall with both Wexford and Gorey. Brian Galvin, Head of Special Projects with WCC, and Consultant Manuel Garrido, both said that this was a marvellous opportunity to capitalise on all the proposed improvements and a wonderful chance to upgrade and advance the town going forward.

Manuel, originally from Spain, said that the train journey from Dublin to Enniscorthy is one of the most beautiful trips in the country and Enniscorthy Station should become a gateway to the town, improving the connectivity of the Templeshannon area. County Manager, Tom Enright, said it was uplifting to see so many in attendance at the launch of this pioneering plan for Enniscorthy including Minister Paul Kehoe, James Browne TD and Maree Lyng President of Enniscorthy Chamber. Enniscorthy is an ideal tourist town with a Castle, a Cathedral, a Market Square and a river running through it, but it needs a lift and it needs a focus according to Mr. Enright.

‘We have to give people a reason to come off the bypass and visit the town, and this is what this regeneration plan is all about.’ He complimented all the public representatives including Paddy Kavanagh and Keith Doyle for their tireless work to bring something new and stimulating to their town and said that the proposals however good and ambitious would not work without the complete backing of the local community and invited all to buy into this beautiful vision of Enniscorthy achieving its full potential for locals and visitors of all ages. Exhilarating times ahead for our town so let’s look forward with positivity and confidence to all that is promised. – Maria Nolan

Local schools get physical! minister of State with responsibility for defence, Paul kehoe, has announced that six wexford schools are among 80 nationwide to be part of the first phase of implementation of PE for Leaving cert students. Confirming the news, Minister Kehoe said all students nationwide will be able to take part in the senior cycle PE framework from 2020. But 80 schools, including 6 in Wexford, will roll out the programme in September of this year. Minister Kehoe confirmed that the schools in question are: Coláiste Abbain in Adamstown, Coláiste Bride in Enniscorthy, Our Lady of Lourdes and St Mary’s in New Ross, Creagh College in Gorey, and Presentation Secondary School in Wexford. The schools mentioned will roll out either the formal exam PE subject or the non-examinable senior cycle PE frame-

work or both. Many schools are opting to roll out both. “I am delighted that six schools in Wexford are included in the pilot scheme for schools to study Physical Education at Senior Cycle,” the Fine Gael TD said. “Students taking the new Leaving Certificate subject from September 2018 will sit the first Leaving Certificate Physical Education (LCPE) exam in 2020. The subject can be taken at both higher and ordinary levels. The new Senior Cycle Physical Education (SCPE) Framework, will provide a new modern curriculum for teachers to teach PE to all students at senior cycle. The assessment process will have 20% going to a physical activity project; 30% to performance assessment and 50% to a written examination.” “The Fine Gael Government is taking physical education seriously for the health of our nation and this

announcement is part of the overall Government focus on encouraging healthy living. We want to support families and communities in Wexford to make healthy choices. The announcement is also a key commitment in Minister Richard Bruton’s Action Plan for Education, which aims to make Ireland’s education and training system the best in Europe by 2026.” But Minister Kehoe stressed that he will continue to fight for many other schools in Wexford that are not part of this phase. Some of these schools have issues around PE halls and other sporting facilities. He added that he will raise these matters will his colleague, Education Minister Richard Bruton, "I am very conscious that while this is good news for the six schools in question, there is still a lot of work to do to assist our schools in bringing their facilities up to date.” n

Level of County wexford homelessness hits new record - Browne James Browne TD says that new figures released by the Department of Housing show that the number of homeless people in County Wexford is 82, an increase of 37 when the figures are compared with the June 2017 Homelessness Report. This marks a rise of 82% in the space of six months – a damning indictment of Fine Gael’s record on housing. Deputy Browne says, “The Government’s housing policy is failing. They have failed to tackle the housing crisis, they have failed to stop the rise in the number of people becoming homeless and they have failed to provide sufficient alternative social or affordable housing. “It’s a moral shame that there are so many children forced to live in emergency accommodation. It’s been highlighted time and time again that this situation is having a detrimental impact on children’s personal development. The Government’s plan for building 500,000 homes in Project 2040 rings hollow when compared to their record to date. “The Government must get to grips with this crisis by directly building new social houses in every county. The budget for social housing is still 24% below what it was in 2008. The capital plan projects this deficit to continue for at least another decade. If the Government is serious about this problem then it must put its money where its mouth is and start building homes,” concluded Deputy Browne.

Hook Lighthouse set to host Sunset Tour Experience this Good Friday Pic: Colin Shanahan

Jutting out to sea at the tip of the Hook Peninsula, there is no better place to take in the vast seascapes and glorious colours of Ireland’s Celtic Sea. The Sunset Tour Experience offers visitors the opportunity to take a guided tour up the 115 well-worn steps of the medieval tower and see its heritage come to life as they meet life-sized figures of the Monk who first kept a beacon alight at the site in the 5th century followed by the Knight who built the tower, William Marshal and hear of life as a light-keeper before stepping on to the top floor outdoor balcony to take in the 360 degree sweeping views of the Southeast of Ireland as the sun goes down. Tours culminate with the spectacular panoramic views of the rolling seas stretching out while visitors savour Irish mead, prosecco, fresh tea and coffee along with Ballyhack smokehouse smoked salmon on homemade brown bread, a selection of homemade canapés and homemade mini desserts in the private lighthouse watch-room and balcony. The Sunset Tours Experience is available by advance booking only. Tickets €45 per person and the organisers say this is an adultonly experience. Tickets can be booked online at www.hookheritage.ie or by calling 051 397055. Free facilities at Hook Lighthouse include parking, toilets, garden picnic areas, wifi. He is a regular winner of the best male singer category at the national AIMS (Association of Irish Musical Societies) awards. This year he will once again be taking the lead role in Wexford Light Opera Society’s upcoming production of Sweeney Todd – a role which will allow him display his superb vocal range. Tony has graced the stages of many of the country’s leading venues including the National Concert Hall in Dublin and has performed with the famous ‘R&R’ – the Rathmines & Rathgar Musical Society. When not performing in

musicals he enjoys singing swing tunes – tunes made famous by Frank Sinatra, Bobby Darin, Dean Martin, etc. The National Opera House concert will showcase his two musical loves – swing and musicals, and he’ll be backed by the musical genius Fintan Cleary on piano (himself no stranger to music awards), the wonderful Collette Cleary on bass and the legendary Bill Doyle on drums – a trio (and they won’t thank us for this) with about 100 years of performing experience between them! WELLNESS & WELLBEING AT WELLS

Holistic Therapist Jessie Doyle speaking on Aromatherapy at Wells House. Pic: Maria Nolan.

On Sunday 18th February I spent a splendid wet Sunday afternoon at the lovely Wells House surrounded by all things wholesome and holistic, including the tasteful Chicken and Fruit lunch bowl full of leafy greens, chunky pieces of succulent chicken sprinkled with delicious slices of strawberries, blueberries and melon. Owners Ulrich and Sabine Rossler are known for their innovation and flair and this

Mindfulness and Wellbeing Sunday is just one in a series of extremely interesting and exciting events for 2018. The beautiful Wells interior hosted 30-minute introductory sessions in Yoga, Sound Therapy, Homeopathy, Kinesiology, Mindfulness, Aromatherapy and Reflexology and there were also one-hour sessions in Fitness, Strengthening the Immune System and Cellular Level Health. With limited time available to me, I visited the Mindfulness session facilitated by the lovely Calodagh Comiskey whose soothing voice and easy smile produces immediate relaxation and feelings of well-being. Calodagh told us that we have between 50-70,000 thoughts per day, some negative and some positive, and the challenge required to produce that well-

being factor is very simply to choose to think more positive than negative thoughts – a 4 or 5 to 1 ratio creating the perfect balance. Many of the negative thoughts we think, Calodagh said, are from yesterday, or last week or a year ago, or five years ago or even from childhood and to illustrate this she told the story of the two Buddist monks who had taken a vow never to touch a woman and one day met a young girl crying at the edge of a river because she couldn’t get across. The older of the two monks picked her up and carried her across the stream. The younger monk said nothing but gave the older one a funny look, about an hour later out of the blue he said, ‘I can’t believe you touched that young woman’, to which the older Monk replied,

‘I put that young woman down an hour ago – why are you still carrying her?’ Making the point that we all seem to carry so much baggage with us that contributes to our unhappiness and feelings of stress. Mindfulness can help us to put it all down and move on. Calodagh’s parting message was to make small changes but keep them consistent. My second session was with the very lively Mary G who gave a super talk on Sound Therapy, something that I was totally unfamiliar with. We can all hear before we come out of the womb, Mary said, and because the body is made up of 75% to 80% water we are all influenced by the Ripple Effect. Our voice, Mary said, is a healing tool and sound and vibration can bring the body back into harmony.

Mary demonstrated the Tibetan Singing Bowl and Tuning Forks and said that we all need to stay in tune with nature at a frequency of 432 hertz. As I already said I knew absolutely nothing about Sound Therapy but now I can say that I enjoyed the session and would certainly consider trying it. My third and final session was with the informative Jessie Doyle, a holistic therapist who gave a most impressive talk on Aromatherapy and the benefit of Essential Oils such as Rose, Jasmine, Grapefruit, Rosemary, Sandelwood, Frankincense and many others. Jessie spoke about the top, middle and base oils and gave a wonderful demonstration on how to blend them using Coconut, Evening Primrose and Johoba oil. Jessie explained how

the oils can be used for massage or in oil burners. We exited the exquisite Versailles Room with lots of scintillating scents wafting on the Wells air. My only regret leaving Wells that day was that I didn’t have more time to visit the rest of the interesting sessions available at the very reasonable fee of €3 or €5 per class, very good value indeed for a most relaxing, informative and interesting afternoon. Excellent idea Wells and certainly one to be repeated. – Maria Nolan

Are You Welcome back to all things about dancing in the south east, past and present. Since last month it looks like the Danby Lodge/Ashfield House dance that ran very successfully on Sunday nights has now ceased. The good news is that the Talbot Hotel in Wexford is now going to accommodate that dance, and on March 4th they start with Peter Burke, then Jason Travers, Done and Dusted and Leslie & John of Blue Lace. Fri 9th Mar; Bellefield GAA has Tommy Carroll a big favourite with the ballroom dancers. Sun 11th Mar; Oylgate Community Centre has Dave Lawlor. Fri 16th Mar; Marshalstown Community Hall has T-Bone Country. Sat 17th Mar; Adamstown Ballroom has Phillip english

on this St. Patrick's night. Sun 1st April; kiltealy Hall has Catherine & The Images. Fri 6th April; Askamore Community Hall has Adrian Ryan. Camross Ballroom has Peter Burke. On the regular dance scene Harney's Ballyedmond have their weekly Sat/Sun/Mon dances with Joe Davitt & His Band playing on Fri 16th for St. Patrick’s Weekend. The Ashdown Park Gorey continues with Wednesday nights but The Brandon House, New Ross, has no dances on 7th/14th March due to renovations, but Margaret Whitty who runs that venue tells me that Johnny Gee Whizz will be playing lots of country favourites on Sun 18th March and Peter Burke will resume the regular Wednesday night spot

DAncing? DecLaN FLaNagaN is the South east’s leading dance teacher specialising in Irish country Jiving & Ballroom, 1950s Rock ‘n’ Roll, Line Dancing, etc. He is also well known as a music broadcaster on elite country Radio 7.30am-9.00am Monday-Friday. He contributes a regular music and dance column to the Slaney News. on 21st March. There's a fabulous new dance floor fitted in the ballroom so why not give it a try! And another very popular dance, this time on a Monday night in The Rising Sun, Mullinavat, run by well known promotor Bobby Jackman, will have no dances for the month of March due to new owners of the premises transferring the dance licence. It starts back on the 2nd of April with a party night and to the sounds of Michael Collins. Ballykealy Manor also on Monday nights has Michael Collins/T-Bone/Images/Glenn Flynn for the month of March. The Woodford Dolmen in the meantime has probably the biggest social dances in the south east on Thursday nights and have Dermot Mc Connell on the 15th March. The Ardattin Inn runs every Friday night but on St. Patrick’s they have a very special night with one of the newest, and youngest country sensations

Wexford movie to hit screens

Award-winning, gothic, ghost story The Lodgers was filmed in Loftus Hall on Wexford’s Hook Head, widely recognised as the 'most haunted house in Ireland', and will be released in Irish cinemas on March 9th. It is directed by awardwinning filmmaker Brian O'Malley, written by musician and Professor of Gothic Literature, David Turpin, and produced by Julianne Forde and Ruth Treacy of Tailored

Films, and was recently nominated for 3 IFTAs. The film stars Charlotte Vega (American Assassin), Bill Milner (Son of Rambow), Moe Dunford (Patrick's Day, Michael Inside) and David Bradley (Harry Potter, The World's End), with Deirdre O'Kane (Noble) rounding out the cast. The film has already been sold for theatrical release in over 22 countries. The film is set against the backdrop of the Irish War of

with Declan Flanagan

Independence in 1920s rural Ireland. Anglo Irish twins Rachel and Edward share a strange existence in their crumbling family estate. Every midnight, the mansion is haunted by the sinister presence of The Lodgers, who enforce three rules upon the twins: they must be in bed by midnight, they may not permit an outsider past the threshold, and they must always stay together. When troubled war veteran Sean returns to the nearby village, he is immediately drawn to the mysterious Rachel, who in turn begins to break the rules set out by The Lodgers. The consequences pull Rachel into a deadly confrontation with her brother and with the curse that haunts them. The film has been honoured with 3 awards this year, including the Jury Prize for Best Film at the Molins de Rei Horror Film Festival in Barcelona, as well as official Jury Awards for Best Special Effects and Best Actress (Charlotte Vega) at Fancine Festival de Cine Fantastico de la Universidad de Malaga in Malaga, Spain. n

Shane Owens. The Parkview House Shillelagh has social dancing every Sat night but Lee Mathews, a big favourite with the Jivers, is appearing on Fri 9th March. Without a doubt, one of the hottest acts around on the dancing circut at the moment is "Liam Mannering & Maria". I'm a strong believer that the showmanship and razz-a-matazz that the showbands brought to the dance halls is sorely missed. But Liam and Maria really make the effort to bring stage presence to us at the dances. From the backdrop to the colourful country & western style shirts and hats, to the beautifully turned out Maria sitting like a china doll on the mantlepiece and everyone wondering how she's holding up such a big accordion all night!!! Both from Co. Meath, Liam from Dunboyne and Maria from Trim, and both starting out at young ages playing music. Liam initially hit the dance scene

with a 5 piece band about 2006 but opted for a more manageable two piece after a couple of years when he teamed up with Charlie Atkins from the Jimmy Buckley Band. When Charlie returned to the big band scene a year later, Liam and Maria decided to give it a go and lucky for us that they did as the fast pace of the duo's music and songs sits very well with the dancing fraternity. Indeed Liam didn't lick it off

the stones as we say as his mam, Laura, was a great singer and his dad, Benji (James), played drums and sang as well. So if you haven't had the pleasure of Liam & Maria's company at a dance yet, make sure to catch up with them the next time they are playing at a venue near you. Thank you for your time and I'll see you all here, same time, same place, next month in the Slaney News. – Declan

10 Mar, Music The 4 Of Us have been a part of Irish music history for over a quarter of a century. Formed and fronted by Newry-born brothers Brendan and Declan Murphy, they shot to early fame towards the end of 1989 with their debut Songs for the Tempted, which featured the massive hits Mary and Drag My Bad Name Down. Enniscorthy event supports disadvantaged children in Kenya Wexford man, Fr Leo Staples, is a priest of St Patrick’s Missionary Society, Kiltegan, and is now in his nineties. Fr Leo has worked tirelessly for the people of Kenya where he has been based for over 65 years. His ongoing development work is in Kitale, Kenya, and the people of Co. Wexford have helped to fund this work over the past ten years. The school there now has six classrooms, dormitories, kitchen facilities, sports and an assembly hall. It caters for 78 children with various disabilities along with over 100 other local children. St Aidan's Cathedral Parish, Enniscorthy, held a coffee morning on January 5th organised by the parish committee. The coffee morning raised €2,053.50 which will help towards the building of two additional classrooms in Kitale. Without this school most of these children would not receive any education or the medical help they need. In January, local man Eugene Doyle visited Kenya to see the

great work being done by Fr Leo and to hand over the full fundraising proceeds. n Above: Some of the many people who supported the fundraising coffee morning. Right: Fr Odhran Furlong with Eugene Doyle before Eugene’s trip to Kenya.

If any additional money is raised it will be put towards other race costs. Venue: Astro Active Centre, Bellefield, Enniscorthy. Date: 10th of March, 2pm - 6pm. There will be a variety of items available to purchase on the day (just in time to get that all important Mother's Day gift) and a raffle with some spectacular prizes on offer. Your support would be greatly appreciated and of course any donations will be most welcome. n

Jim’s new book Jim Berry launched his book on the history of gaelic games in Rathangan, with particular reference to St. Anne’s GAA Club, at a special event in the local GAA complex on 24th February. The book also includes three decades of Rathangan's association with Kilmore Parish in Fr. Paddy McDonald's time there. The book is entitled "OCTOBER 2000" commemorating the historic Millennium

Double in Senior Hurling and Football. The launch was done by the legendary Wexford hurler, Tom Dempsey. The book starts off in 1884 and the excitement of the victories of the great Kilmannon team in 1887 and continues up to 2017 when the ladies of Rathangan captured the Co. Senior Football Title. A great read for all interested in the GAA and local history. n

Gardaí not adequately equipped to fight crime? Fianna Fáil TD for Wexford, James Browne, says the Government needs to seriously up its efforts on ensuring the Gardaí are adequately equipped to tackle crime in Wexford. Deputy Browne made the comments after obtaining new information which shows that four Garda stations in Wexford do not have access to the PULSE computer system. Deputy Browne said, “Fine Gael have insisted that they are serious about tackling crime, but the reality is that they have failed to ensure the Gardaí are adequately equipped. New information obtained by Fianna Fáil shows

that four Garda stations in Wexford do not even have broadband, let alone access to the PULSE computer system. “This means Gardaí based in these stations have to rely on their colleagues elsewhere to get the information that they need to investigate crime and monitor suspicious activity. It’s well acknowledged that every minute matters when it comes to investigating and responding to incidents of crime. The fact that Gardaí have to rely on a middleman at times to get basic information means that their ability to respond to crime is hampered.” n

€38,192 has been allocated for 11 projects in County Wexford to tackle the scourge of illegal dumping. Minister with responsibility for Defence, Paul Kehoe, has said illegal dumping is a blight on communities and that the funding will tackle a number of black spots. Minister Kehoe has also called for recycling centres to extend their opening hours as part of a joined-up approach to dumping and the environment. "Some centres are closed on a Monday and have curtailed hours on a Saturday. Serious consideration needs to be given to extending the hours," Minister Kehoe said. According to the information obtained by the minister, a total of €38,192 is to be allocated to tackle the scourge of illegal dumping. One of the projects to be funded in Co. Wexford is at Ross Road, Enniscorthy. Illegal dumping of domestic rubbish is a big plague on the local community and a serious concern for locals. Minister Kehoe is confident that this additional money allocated by the government will help address the problem. The other projects are Kilnahue Lane, Gorey; Railway Platform, Bridgetown; Spout Rd, Clonroche; Wood Rd, Bunclody; Ferns Bottle Bank; Banoge, Gorey; Carrig Ban, Bunclody; Rock Roads, Kilmyshall, Bunclody; Clean Mattress Amnesty; Laneway in

Ferndale Estate, Wexford Town. Minister Kehoe said that covert surveillance, CCTV and smart technology including drones and satellites will be used as part of the crackdown. “Illegal dumping is a blight on our communities. It demonstrates a complete lack of respect for other people and for the environment… Fine Gael’s priority is to build on the progress we have made in protecting our natural environment so that we can safeguard it for future generations. “We will see better enforcement of anti-dumping measures and stronger prosecutions being made." The response to last year’s anti-dumping initiative from the public and local authorities was unprecedented. 230 black spots across the country were cleaned up and measures put in place to protect against a return of illegal dumping in these areas. Speaking at the launch of the 2018 Anti-Dumping Initiative Minister for Rural and Community Development, Michael Ring T.D. said: “As the Minister responsible for rural development, I am acutely conscious of the threat that illegal dumping poses to jobs, incomes and investment in those areas of our country whose growth is dependent on the preservation and protection of our magnificent landscapes, and our clean waterways.” n

Special Rates Incentive Scheme (RIS) for Enniscorthy

A Special RIS for the ratepayers in the former Enniscorthy Town Council rating area has been introduced in 2018 to acknowledge the impact of full harmonisation on these ratepayers. Save up to €1,000… To avail of a Rates Incentive Grant of 6% of your annual rates bill, subject to a maximum of €1,000: a) Pay your rates in full (less the incentive value) by 31st July, 2018, or b) Commence payment by Bank Standing Order by

Sonru, the global leader and pioneer of asynchronous video interviewing, has announced that it has appointed former CEO of DoneDeal, John Warburton, as its Chief Operating Officer. John had overseen DoneDeal’s growth and successful acquisition by Schibsted, the Oslo-listed international group and later its merger with Distilled Media Group businesses, the property portal Daft.ie and the online marketplace Adverts.ie. He will continue to work alongside Edward Hendrick, Sonru’s founder and CEO but will now

take on overall responsibility for the operational management of the business. Founded in 2007, Sonru is headquartered in Wexford with regional offices in Europe, Asia Pacific, Middle East and North America and people on the ground in Australia, UK, France and South Africa. Candidates from over 180 countries have completed an interview on the Sonru system for clients in more than forty countries worldwide. Edward Hendrick said John will play a pivotal role in managing Sonru’s continued growth and global expansion. n

Fg’s rhetoric on job creation in the South-East lacks substance - Browne “Just 3 IDA site visits take place in Wexford in 2017”

Fianna Fáil TD for Wexford James Browne has questioned the legitimacy of Fine Gael’s rhetoric that it is actively seeking to bring investment to the South-East region, including Wexford. Deputy Browne made the comments after Fianna Fáil obtained new information which shows that just 3 IDA site visits took place in Co. Wexford in all of 2017. This compares to a total of 327 site visits in Dublin. Deputy Browne said, “Fine Gael’s claim that it is actively supporting well-paying jobs outside Dublin is nothing more than hot air and bluster.”

9th April, 2018, and clear your rate account (less the incentive value) by 1st November, 2018. Arrears on your Account? The scheme is open to customers with arrears on their accounts where they meet the following requirements: a) Pay a minimum equivalent to one year’s rates by the same timelines outlined above. b) Enter into a structured payment plan to address and eliminate the arrears. n

Enniscorthy’s vacancy rate Local Fianna Fáil TD, James Browne, says the government needs to step up its efforts to help struggling town centres to get back on their feet. Deputy Browne made the comments following the publication of a report that shows New Ross and Enniscorthy have some of the highest rates of vacancy in commercial buildings in Leinster. “The national average for rates of vacancies for commercial buildings is 13.3%, but… the vacancy rate in New Ross stands at 19.5%. While this marks a slight improvement in contrast to recent reports, it’s still the sixth highest commercial vacancy

rate in Leinster. However, Enniscorthy’s total is worse than previous studies. The rate of commercial vacancies has risen by 2% to 17.7%. “The figures show that while there may be some economic growth centred in large urban areas, Enniscorthy and New Ross are continuing to struggle. The government needs to come forward with comprehensive proposals to encourage new businesses to setup in New Ross and Enniscorthy. There is potential there, thanks to strong local business people. However that potential has not been helped by the government.” n

Earth 2 Heaven

This month, Joe Kavanagh reflects on the recent Storm Emma It’s the beginning of March and we've had the biggest snowfall in years, seems like it was a lot more than 2010 although it obviously hasn't stayed around for anything like as long. There is a magic that comes with snow… It’s the pristine white calm that blankets over everything sculpturing and accentuating shapes, trees, roofs and roads. I got a text message saying 'kindness is like snow … it beautifies everything it covers'… thought it was good food for thought! A client rang me up on Friday morning saying her dog wouldn't go out in the snow. My own were a little reluctant at first too. Then they got going! My father used to say, 'Snow is a dog’s Summer’ and mine just loved it. They ran, jumped, leapt, kicked up their heels, rolled in it, just about everything and it was a joy to watch. Spare a thought for the farmers though… The water pipes froze so cows and cattle couldn't get access to drinking water. Roads were impassable so if they were in trouble with sick animals it was very difficult to get to them. Also milk lorries couldn't get to collect the milk so farmers had to dump tanks of milk that they'd worked so hard to get. The latest challenge for them as the rain came is that it's made the snow much heavier and roofs of sheds have collapsed sometimes injuring or killing animals underneath… the romantic views go out the window very fast when you're going from one calamity to another. Farmers to be fair to them are a very resilient bunch and pull together to help one another when in trouble. It was lots of farmers that helped clear back-roads to get people able to travel again. They don't lick their wounds for too long, just get up and get going again. They work long hours, well past the average working week of 40 hours and are stretched to the limit reaching on all the jobs. As society becomes more urbanised we lose touch with the farming community unless we are directly involved with them such as ourselves. We lose contact with them and what they do. They produce the food we eat, the milk for our breakfast cereal and the spuds on our dinner plate. They work in all kinds of weather and deliver the goods time and again. Every job has its moments for sure, everyone has his/her own challenges… it’s how we approach those challenges that sets some apart. Meanwhile, enjoy the last of the snow on the fields with your dogs. Timely reminders: Cats are what’s called 'long day' breeders as in they come into heat as the daylight increases so now is the optimal time for spaying. As the weather warms up hopefully it'll be time to do the flea and tick treatments too. As always thanks for your continued support and if you've got any queries don't be afraid to contact us or call in. n

gETTing Tough on Dog Fouling Plain-clothes Litter Wardens are being deployed across Co. Wexford in a bid to catch inconsiderate dog owners who aren’t cleaning up after their pets. In response to concerns that litter offences may be on the increase across Wexford, Wexford County Council has launched a series of initiatives aimed at identifying and prosecuting those responsible. The plain clothes council staff will be working during “dog walking hours” on established routes to address the growing problem of dog litter.

Join the Green Dog Walkers campaign today by signing the pledge and together we can help reduce dog-fouling in our community. Dog walkers can take the pledge by signing the Green Dog Walkers form and returning it to Environment Section, Wexford County Council, Carricklawn, Wexford. A local contributor looks at life today in Enniscorthy and beyond Weather difficultieS The last few days have seen the heaviest snow and the worst weather conditions witnessed in this country in many years. During this few days it has to be said that our authorities, emergency services, and indeed the voluntary sector has reacted magnificently. Also there was a huge response from people like neighbours who did all they could in difficult circumstances to help elderly and vulnerable neighbours. As the old saying goes, “When the going gets tough, the tough get going.” And they did. A huge thanks to all. OpiniOn pOllS and leO With the exception of the last opinion poll, it appears that Fine Gael is surging ahead in popular support. They are leaving all other parties well behind. This leads once again to speculation as to whether Leo will decide to call an election so as to obtain a new mandate for himself and his party. Writing here a few months ago on this subject I expressed the view that this would not happen. I still

believe this, as the reality on the ground is a lot different to what the polls indicate. Local Fine Gaelers will verify that an election would be no walkover and that it would be foolish to take any chances this year at least. Besides, Leo really enjoys being Taoiseach and he aint gonna give it up that easily. Brexit It looks like Britain is determined to push on with socalled Brexit. People like Boris Johnson and his pals such as Rees Mogg, who hardly know where Brussels is, are ideologues who have no regard whatever for the economic consequences of their actions and are forcing the pace on this and unless the present government collapses will succeed in their mission. It is extremely difficult to see any intelligence in their actions. Britain’s trade with the E.U. is worth approximately €203 billion per year while its combined trade with India, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, Canada, China and the U.S. is only worth €103 billion. It is extremely difficult to

take a lot of genius to sort this one out and the main input will have to come from our own government and the E.U. The last thing we need is to depend on Boris and his pals to come up with an intelligent answer to the puzzle. Intelligence is sadly lacking there methinks.

View from the Hill understand where the shortfall will come from when they leave the E.U. Johnson and his cronies are living under the illusion that GREAT Britain is so GREAT that it will overcome these difficulties and find new markets. They will, of course, get plenty of demand for their goods from countries in the third world and so on but these places have no money to purchase the quality goods and services which Britain provides. The bottom line is that it is the general public in Britain who will suffer as a result of this

silly decision while the millionaire Johnson and his pals will be insulated from any fallout. Ireland will suffer enormously as a result of Brexit. While Britain is no longer our biggest customer it still is worth €13.5 billion per year in trade. Our biggest customer is the U.S. with €22.5 billion in business followed by Belgium with €15.5 billion. Our problem is that the type of produce which we export to Britain probably would have some difficulty finding a home in other markets. It will

St. patrick’S day The last thing on the minds of most people over the last few days is St. Patrick’s Day. However, when we see the last of the white stuff in a day or two, I hope, we will begin to think ahead. A few nice, bright days will bring out the ‘oul’ tee shirts and shorts (well maybe not the shorts just yet) and St. Patrick’s will come on to our horizons. There is no doubt that Enniscorthy will once again put on a great parade which hopefully will have the full support of the population in general. This is always a great event for young and old alike and more or less kickstarts the tourist season in Enniscorthy. It brings a new start to the year for everyone with the realisation that win-

ter is finally over. Let’s look forward to it and enjoy the day when it arrives. Speed VanS We are all familiar, by now, with the speed vans which monitor traffic on our roads. These vans are normally parked on our national primary roads and do have a positive effect. A lot of dangerous and reckless driving is taking place on our county or secondary roads by lunatics who are safe in the knowledge that there is little or no possibility of being detected. Gardaí are under resourced and speed vans do not cover these roads so therefore it is a free for all. Perhaps the powers that be might consider, even on a hit and miss basis, placing speed traps on these roads from time to time. All that is required is a few of these people to be nailed and the word will spread quickly enough. This would make these roads that little bit safer. n We are often asked: Who is the “View from the Hill” columnist? All we can say is that the author’s surname is NOT Doyle!

Caroline gets motoring review by Caroline Kidd

Opel Grandland X the Opel grandland x is a brand new model for the Opel range, a mid-size SuV slotting in above the Opel astra. grandland x gives Opel a key product to compete for family buyers, who more and more are opting for SuVs. The Opel Grandland X is a good-looking SUV with familiar Opel design cues. It shares underpinnings and engines with the Peugeot 3008 launched last year, but the Grandland X feels very

much like an Opel. The Grandland X has a sleek and compact presence but there’s room inside for five as well as a generous 514 litre boot. And while the interior design may not be as avantgarde as the Peugeot, the interior of the Grandland X is good quality and packed with technology including the Opel OnStar personal assistant and a touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility.

Comfort and space is a must for a family car and the Opel Grandland X does not disappoint. On the road it’s an agile and pleasant SUV to drive with light but predictable steering. The handling is not going to set the world on fire, but as a family car that’s easy to drive and get along with, you can’t fault it. Opel is lucky to have some excellent engines to offer with Grandland X. I was driving the 1.2-litre

petrol with 130hp and the SRi model tested with lots o f g o o d i e s re t a i l e d a t €30,595 (the range kicks off at €27,995). For anyone thinking of switching back to petrol, I couldn’t recommend this engine more. It’s nippy with plenty of torque and refinement is excellent. It’s smooth and efficient while C02 emissions mean motor tax is just €200 per year. There’s also a 1.6-litre diesel with 120hp (from

Opel Ireland is offering the Grandland X in four trim levels: SC, SRi, Elite and Ultimate. While the starting price of €27,995 is higher than some rivals, Opel bites back with a good standard specification. Equipment includes OnStar with Wifi hotspot, smartphone projection, dual zone climate control, cruise control, electric windows, 17” alloys, lane departure warning, speed sign recognition, rear parking sensors, high beam assist, and auto lights and wipers. My SRi model on test had 18” alloys, ambient lighting, electrically folding door mirrors, front and rear alloy effect skid plates, front parking sensors, keyless entry, 60/40 split fold-

ing rear seats, blind spot alert and a power tailgate. The Opel Grandland X enters a packed segment full of rivals but it’s a really valuable car for Opel. It ticks all the boxes for a family car and the 1.2-litre petrol model is very pleasant to drive. The Opel Grandland X doesn’t do anything extraordinary but it’s comfortable and laden with technology so deserves to do well in its segment. steady as she GOes Official statistics released at the beginning of March by the Society of the irish Motor industry (SiMi) show that the total new car registrations for the month of february were steady, as registrations were very much in line (17,081) when compared to february 2017 (17,089), while new cars registrations year to date remain -3.5% (54,143) down on the same period last year (56,092). The new Commercial Vehicle sector showed a mixed result between Light and Heavy Commercial Vehicle registrations. New Light Commercial Vehicle (LCV) registrations were up 6.13% (2,634) on February 2017 (2,487) and year to date are up 6% (9,356). While New Heavy Commercial Vehicles (HGV) have declined 10% for the month of February (243) compared to the same month last year (270) and are down 11% (646) year to date. Imported Used Cars have increased by 14.4% February 2018 (8,903) and year to date are 17.3% (17,964) ahead of 2017 (15,317). Commenting on the figures, SIMI Director General Alan Nolan stated, “New car

registrations for the month of February delivered a steady performance when compared with the same month last year, however registrations overall remaining 3.5% down year to date. The increase in the light commercial vehicle sector reflects the strong economic growth for businesses, particularly in the local economy, while HGVs which may be more impacted by Brexit concerns, remain down 11%. The Brexit impact is also visible in the continued growth in used car imports which were 15.7% up in February. The Diesel market share is continuing to move back toward more traditional levels in new car sales, having reached an artificially high peak of 73% in 2014, it is currently standing at 57% so far in 2018. As a consequence of this shift, as SIMI had previously indicated, the average CO2 emissions for new cars registered this year have increased by 2.1%." A remarkable run of recent soccer victories has brought the Leinster U-17 Schools Cup to enniscorthy CBS for the first time. Indeed it’s the first time the school has won a Leinster soccer title of any description and also the first time any Co. Wexford school has ever won this particular competition. Under the watchful eyes of teachers Lisa Burke and Shane Murphy, the team will be playing Milford from Co. Donegal in the All-Ireland semi-final next week. Team pictured above, back row L-r: Stephen Kearns, Michael Delaney, rory Murphy, Lee Jordan, Sean Maher, Craig Peare, eanna Doyle, nathan O’Connor. The team followed up an earlier 1-0 win with a 2-1 victory with Aaron scoring both goals as Falkirk's Ciaran Dunne claimed two assists. "This week was all about forming a squad for the Elite Round, and putting together the strongest squad possible. These players have shown the strength of the squad, and some players have put themselves in very

Enniscorthy Girls U-16 Rugby new ross 10 enniscorthy 24 Enniscorthy won this excellent Girls U16 Leinster League Premier Division clash played in New Ross in very cold conditions at the end of February. It was a must-win match for both teams as defeat would all but end any chance of qualification for the knockout stages of the league. The scoreline would suggest a comfortable win for the Scorthy girls, but in truth it was a much closer affair than that. In fact, New Ross dominated for long periods and only some very staunch defence by Enniscorthy kept them in the game. New Ross dominated the first half through their powerful rucking and direct running game. Despite that, Enniscorthy led 12 nil at half time through two breakaway tries from player of the match, centre Katie Whelan, and a Mia Kelly con-

version. Ross powered in for a try in the first minute of the second half with the conversion narrowly missed. The visitors pack got their rucking game going and the second half was a much more even contest. The away team hit a purple patch mid way through the second half with Whelan touching down for her hat-trick and Mia Kelly scoring a 5 pointer after great hands by the whole back line. Kelly added the conversion for a 24-5 lead. New Ross finished strongly to score a well deserved try in the corner with the last play of the game. Enniscorthy will be delighted with the win but know that a big improvement will be needed in their remaining games against high flying Naas and Tullamore. New Ross will be disappointed to have dominated for so long and come away with nothing but should

take great encouragement from a v e r y g o o d d i s p l a y. F o r Enniscorthy, apart from the scorers, Katie Foley, Fay Larkin, Lucy Egan and Aoife Codd put in tremendous displays particularly in defence. Given that 6 of the starting 13 only started playing rugby this year, this group have huge potential but also know that some huge challenges face them in the next few weeks. Well done to both teams for serving up a tremendous ad for girls’ rugby in Wexford. Enniscorthy team: 1. Maria O’Dowd 2. Lucy Egan 3. Taragh Cooper 4. Katie Foley 5. Ali Murphy 8. Fay Larkin 9. Popcorn & Pure Magic at the Presentation the beauty Queen of leenane, about to go on circuit after three very successful nights at the presentation centre is, in my opinion, enniscorthy drama group’s best production to date. and having witnessed all 14 productions since the inception of the group in 2013 i feel qualified to make the statement. Critiquing the Martin McDonagh masterpiece I was

resorts to cruelty and deceit to keep her last remaining child, Maureen, played by the brilliant AnneMarie Whelan, at home to look after her in her old age, depriving her of a life of normality and happiness with the kind and gentle Pato, wonderfully portrayed by one of Enniscorthy’s finest actors, Fintan Kelly. The rapport between the two leading ladies is incred-

life or at the very least not to die a virgin, and as for the loathsome Mag we are drawn to her humour, wit and wile and don’t really want to see her left alone, such is the genius of the writing and the remarkable ability of the two actors. Their manipulation is in complete contrast with the gentleness and honesty of Pato in a beautifully under-

under pains to find fault with the brilliantly directed, superbly acted and expertly stage-managed performance. Director and Set Designer To m R e d d y h a s i n d e e d excelled himself with this one. The sombre tale is a common one of an Ireland of a time when ageing mothers and fathers lived in utter fear and terror of being left alone or put in a home when their offspring had no other option but to emigrate to England or America. Mag, an ageing Galway mother played exceptionally well by Michelle Whelan,

ible, they are comfortable and at ease with each other on stage, their body language and facial expressions adding hugely to the comic element of the play, their timing and pace totally in sync with each other and the jealousy, hatred and violence between them totally believable and palpable. Neither of these two main characters are likeable, they are dirty, mean, selfish and extremely cruel to each and yet, as an audience, we find ourselves sympathetic to the 40-year-old Maureen wanting her to have love in her

stated performance by Fintan Kelly. Although, not a lead role nor a usual one for Fintan, to my mind he brings something special to this part and his letter scene just at the beginning of the second half is one of the best in the play, giving an insight into his gentle nature and endearing his character to the audience. The chemistry between himself and Maureen in the love scenes is expertly done appearing both effortless and natural. The chemistry between Mag and Pato’s younger brother, Ray, played by the

exuberant Brendan Robinson, provides most of the comedy of the play and the interaction between these two actors comes across uncontrived and with ease. All four actors give tremendous performances – this is quality acting by professionals and I cannot speak highly enough of the overall production – it is simply excellent. The set is perfect and the special effects, like the sound of the rain on the window, the very natural looking flames from the very believable looking Aga, the running water from the sink tap and the terrifying sounds of oil sizzling on the cooker are fantastic additions, as is the eerie Hitchcock-style music between acts and all are a credit to Director, Tom Reddy, who has done a most marvellous job and has indeed created pure magic with this play. The set changes are minimal and effortlessly executed by the quick-moving backs t a g e c re w u n d e r S t a g e Manager, Fiona Condren, and i n d e e d f ro n t o f h o u s e – Chairman Liam Doyle and Treasurer Tom Boland, resplendent in tuxes, adding a little bit of theatrical class to proceedings, and the hard working and efficient Presentation staff under Manager Lisa Byrne, all making for a most splendid and enjoyable experience at The Beauty Queen of Leenane. Finally, could I just wish all at Enniscorthy Drama the very best of luck on the Circuit and I have no doubt that they will do themselves and their town proud. – maria nolan

if you ever find yourself in dublin with time to spare you could do far worse than visit one of our most precious treasures, the national gallery of ireland, on Merrion Square. Indeed, if you are one of those fortunate over 66 year olds amongst us you could actually do worse than make a day of it compliments of Free Travel and take the bus free of charge to the Kildare/Grafton Street area from where a short walk will take you to Merrion Square and free entry to the magnificent Gallery. In this most beautiful building you will find several hours of uplifting viewing as you peruse the wonderful collections on display. You can sit

and simply ponder the splendour of it all or you can get up close and personal with your own particular favourites or immerse yourself in the glory of a Carravaggio, a Picasso, a Turner or a Jack B. Yeats. My purpose in visiting recently was twofold, I have

long wanted to see the Hellelil and Hildebrand, the Meeting on the Turret Stairs by Frederic William Burton, a romantic watercolour of a Medieval Lady and her Knight painted in 1864 and bequeathed to the nation in 1900 by Miss Margaret Stokes. And I also wanted to view the Hennessy Portrait Exhibition as two of our Wexford artists, Zane Sutra and Eilis McCann, were selected to be shortlisted out of 270 entries received from artists all over the country and Irish artists living abroad. I have attended exhibitions by both artists in The Presentation Centre here in Enniscorthy, and greatly admire their work, and it was gratifying to see The Dunlaoghaire Fox by Zane Sutra

and My Son Feeding On My Breast by Eilis McCann hanging in the National Gallery and well done to both artists. I was a bit less successful in my other quest as The Meeting on the Turret Stairs is only on view Thursdays between 5.30 and 6.30pm, Sundays from 2 to 3pm but lo and behold it is on view every 14th February for the entire day from 9.15am to 5.30pm. Why? Because this amorous image from the past has become a popular place to pop the question on St. Valentine`s Day! How delightful it is that these two lovers from the far distant past are still inspiring today’s romantic couples. – maria nolan

They will be located at the Irish Arts Stand outside the National Gallery from 12 to 6pm on March 18th and they invite anyone in London on the day to come and visit them and view their work. VISUAL VOICES

Created by the children of Carraig Briste and Killegney Early Years, guided by Visual Artist Anne Manning, these 47 masks are the visual representation of many connections, through conversations, meditative experiences and memory through process, mutual respect and choice. These Faces were on display throughout the businesses of Enniscorthy from the 19th February - 3rd of March 2018 and will be in The Presentation Centre Gallery, Enniscorthy, from 9th March to the 23rd of March 2018.

THE FESTIVAL THAT JUST KEEPS ON GIVING Now in its fifth year, the Wexford Literary Festival is not just going from strength to strength, it is the festival that just keeps on giving in the form of book deals for all those associated with it. The success of its Chairperson, Carmel Harrington, is both well deserved and well documented. Carmel is currently in the process of editing her eight book which will be launched later this year. And speaking of launches, not one but two members of the Wexford Festival Committee are about to launch second novels in the coming weeks. Children`s author Caroline Busher who joined the Festival Committee in 2015, is the Irish Times Best Selling author of The Ghosts of Magnificent Children and will launch her second novel The Girl Who Ate The Stars on Friday 16th March at Enniscorthy Castle. It will be launched by Irish filmmaker, animator and illustrator Tomm Moore at Enniscorthy Castle at 6.30pm on Friday 16th March and all are welcome. Caroline is the Sorceress of magnificent tales and The Girl Who Ate The Stars is the imaginative adventure of Lottie and Albert, evacuated from wartime Manchester to rural Wexford, where not everything is as it seems. Caroline Busher A mysterious and chilling tale of a German bomb looking mysterious at enniscorthy exposing an ancient and menacing underworld of Castle wolves and stars. Totally intriguing. Caroline has worked as the Reader in Residence with Wexford Libraries and is a Heritage Expert with the Heritage Council of Ireland. She has an MA in Creative Writing and is presently the Festival Manager of Towers and Tales Book Festival in Lismore Castle and the Vice Chair of Wexford Literary Festival. Just don’t arrive in a Red Riding Hood outfit as there may be a lotta, lotta wolves about! Arklow author Adele O`Neill who has also been with the Festival since 2015 is about to launch her second novel Behind A Closed Door at the Arklow Golf Club on Thursday 15th March at 7.30pm. It will be launched by RTE Presenter Rick O`Shea. The smiling Adele received a three-book deal from Adele O’neill publishing house Head of Zeus in 2017 and her debut novel Brothers and Sisters was an immediate success. And finally, a third member of the Festival Committee, Tina Callaghan, has just landed a three-book deal with Poolbeg Press for her stories about three teenagers growing up in a cursed town. Tina’s supernatural tales are loosely based on New Ross and a 13th century curse levied on it by a corrupt monk banished by the local community. Remarkable accolades for this relatively new festival, so if you are a frustrated writer struggling to be published you could do worse than attend this year’s Wexford Literary Festival at Enniscorthy over the weekend of 2nd to 4th November. – Maria Nolan
