Agreement in principal has been reached to sell the National 1798 Rebellion Centre to Mr John Stafford, Slaney Farms, Tomnalosset, Enniscorthy, for €325,000 subject to planning permission. The property is to be sold limiting its use to a distillery/visitor centre for a period of 5 years and specifically restricting the construction of housing. The Council will have first refusal to purchase the property at the original sale price if the purchaser decides to sell within the first 5 years.
At the Enniscorthy Municipal District meeting of 26th March, Town Manager Liz Hore confirmed the proceeds of the sale would be ringfenced for tourism. This tourist season the Centre will function as normal, the following season it is proposed to be in temporary accommodation (possibly at the Athenaeum), and the following season it is hoped the Centre will be in a permanent location as part of a major tourism complex, proposed by Wexford County Council, for the Castle/ Athenaeum area. n

comment Hope and Dream 10, 2018, is almost upon us. It will be run on 8th April to raise funds and awareness for the Hope Cancer Support Centre in Enniscorthy, Co. Wexford Hospice Homecare Service and the MRI Now project for Wexford General Hospital. Since 2012 an amazing €828,914 has been raised for local charities which has made a huge difference to the quality of life of very many people. The goal this year is to register 2,500 people and for each participant to raise as much money as possible. All sponsorship money raised will go directly to the three charities (50% to Hope, 25% to Hospice and 25% to MRI Now) and race costs will be paid for by the event’s invaluable sponsors. And the good news is that there is still time to register by calling into the Admin Office in the Hope Cancer Support Centre at 22 Upper Wafer Street this Thursday (5th April) between 10am and 4pm or at The Presentation Centre this Friday and Saturday 10am to 8pm. – Frank Corcoran

a cure for the cold call A cold call is an unsolicited visit or telephone call made by someone trying to sell goods or services. These goods or services don’t necessarily need to have any real value, so cold calling can also include tech support scammers trying to convince you they work for Microsoft and happen to know that your computer is having problems. Recently, phone numbers that look vaguely familiar have been showing up on my phone. This is because scammers have found out how to spoof telephone numbers that appear to be from the same area code as the victim. This phenomenon is called neighbour spoofing. So, what can you do about these annoying and sometimes dangerous calls? These are a few of many options: Do not call back on missed cold calls, especially if the telephone number starts with a foreign country code or strange area code. If you happen to pick up a cold call, cut the conversation short by stating that you are “not interested” and hang up. Do not use the word “yes.” While this may seem rude to you, know that some scammers record the phone conversations and use them to construct a falsified version that appears you have given consent. Do not give away your telephone number online, even if you just “won a new iPhone.” Most phone operators can bar international calls to make sure that you do not receive any, so consider blocking international numbers if you don’t need to receive any calls from abroad. Ask for your number to be removed from directories (such as the Yellow Pages in your local phone book) to stop cold callers from finding them there. Some phone operators allow you to create a personal block list, but these block lists are usually of a very limited size. Still, it’s a good option to block the most persistent pests. Ferns Coputer Services has been in business in Ferns since May 2007. Established by David Pohludek, it has a huge clientele base all over Co. Wexford and beyond.

Flood relief is a top priority
4 April 2018
ST. SENAN’S CONFIRMATION
Minister Paul Kehoe with the Minister for OPW, Kevin Boxer Moran, examining plans for the Enniscorthy Flood Relief Scheme.
Minister of State paul kehoe Td has said there can be no further delays in the construction of the Enniscorthy Flood Relief Scheme. Minister Kehoe was in contact with Minister for OPW, Kevin Boxer Moran, who visited Enniscorthy during the recent storms, and confirmed the Scheme has been provided for in the OPW multi-annual Capital Expenditure Budgets, and is one of the major schemes to be financed under the National Development Plan 2018-27. Minister Kehoe has obtained an update from Minister Moran which confirms that services and utilities along the Promenade are expected to be relocated later this year ahead of the main construction work in 2019.
In his response to Minister Kehoe, Minister Moran said initial site investigations have been completed, along with archaeological and ecological assessments and reports. An advance programme to control and eradicate invasive species of vegetation is currently underway. Further advance construction elements which involve relocation of services and utilities along the Promenade are expected to commence later in 2018 and main construction expected to start in mid to late 2019. Minister Kehoe said delivering the flood relief scheme is among his top priorities as minister and that he has urged his government colleagues of the need to ensure there are no further delays. n

This year’s Hope & Dream event takes place on Sunday, 8th April.
Honouring the flag Easter commemorations in Enniscorthy
Chairman of Enniscorthy Municipal District, Cllr Keith Doyle, laid a wreath at The Patriot’s Flag monument in Enniscorthy’s Abbey Square just before the commencement of the St Patrick’s Day Parade last month. This year is the 170th anniversary of the first flying of the Irish tricolour which took place in both Enniscorthy and Waterford on the same day. Enniscorthy’s place in the flag’s history is acknowledged at the recently opened GPO museum in Dublin. Cllr Doyle believes Enniscorthy has a special relationship with the flag and he hopes the wreath-laying ceremony on St Patrick’s Day will become an important annual event in the town.
On Easter Monday, 2nd April, 2018, Enniscorthy Municipal District commemorated the 102nd Anniversary of the Insurrection of Easter 1916 by laying wreaths at the 1798 monument and at the Patriot’s Flag monument to honour the memory of all Co. Wexford people who died for Ireland particularly from 1798 onwards. Enniscorthy Celebrates International Women’s Day international Women’s day, 8th March, was celebrated in Enniscorthy at The presentation Centre with an event titled ‘Success beyond Wealth and power’, hosted by Enniscorthy Chamber. I n t ro d u c e d b y To w n Manager Liz Hore and facilitated by TV3 journalist and news reporter, the vivacious Zara King, the event was a huge success with 59 women and 1 brave man in attendance.
Councillor Johnny Mythen was the sole representative of his gender and indeed carried the baton with distinction and contributed well to the overall debate and discussion. Four key speakers addressed the enthusiastic audience, among them Linda Doran, Director at Baker Tilly Hughes Blake, who advised us to be confident, open to change and adaptable and to be passionate about what we do each day. Education, Linda
said, ‘is your passport in life’ and success for her is to be able to provide her family with options and opportunities. Joanne Powell, a learning and development professional with QED, introduced the audience to ‘the wheel’, a breakdown of various aspects of life including – home life, family, health, fitness, finance, etc. She urged people to take time out to assess where they were at and where they want to be and she told

them to ‘follow your gut instincts and be brave’. Quoting John C Maxwell, Joanne said, ‘The secret of your success is found in your daily routine, what you do day to day.’ Irene Walker of Soroptimist International Wexford Branch, originally from the Netherlands, shared her interesting and varied life stories with the Presentation audience, working in Foreign Affairs from Jamaica to London and everywhere in between. Irene eventually moved to Wexford where she opened her own Antique business and is now travelling the world with Soroptimist International. Her advice was always to remember when dealing with people, particularly those in trouble, that ‘they don’t choose not to tell the truth they just tell their own version of it’. The final speaker was the youngest of the panel, UCD Food and Agriculture student and a member of the Wexford Camogie team Una Sinnott, who spoke inspiringly about graspping opportunities and just ‘going for it’. Una attributes her ‘go for it’ attitude to her experience as a camogie player
with Wexford saying that each player has only a certain amount of time in any game to shine so when the chance comes your way you have to go for it 100%. And the second piece of advice from this inspirational and extremely motivated lady was to repeat the best piece of advice she ever received from one of her teachers, ‘Whatever people say or do try not to take it personally.’ Sound advice indeed from one so young. The excellent and engaging Zara King then invited participation from the audience and a lively discussion ensued covering a wide range of issues and topics all washed down later by delicious refreshments in the airy Presentation foyer where people continued to mingle and chat. Well done to Enniscorthy Chamber and CEO Catriona Murphy on a most thought-provoking and informative event and a most fitting way to celebrate International Women’s Day and certainly something that could be repeated going forward. – Maria Nolan

it was confirmed last month by the Minister for Education and Skills to Wexford Td James browne that the tender to construct a new school to cater for St. patrick’s Special School Enniscorthy has been approved. Last month, Deputy Browne raised the issue in the Dáil during a special debate. The Fianna Fáil TD welcomed the news and vowed to maintain pressure on the Minister for Education and Skills, Richard Bruton, to ensure that construction begins before the end of the year. “This is a long overdue development that will benefit the
most vulnerable in our community. I welcome the fact that Minister Bruton has acted following persisting delays, which left parents, teachers and students exasperated’, explained Deputy Browne. ‘Over 700 days ago, St. Patrick’s were promised that the new school would be built.’ Deputy Browne praised the efforts of the school principal, Lee Rogers, staff, and the Board of Management for their persistence in getting the school delivered. ‘It’s vital that the Department of Education and Skills push ahead and ensure that no further delays affect the con-

struction of the school’, concluded Deputy Browne. n

Locals rock it for Hospice at Holohan’s St Patrick’s Day celebrations were certainly in full swing on Friday night, 16th March, when a plethora of local talent came together at Holohan’s on Slaney Place to perform a conglomerate of rock and roll greats all in aid of that most worthy of causes – Wexford Hospice. O rg a n i s e d b y R o i s i n Williams, Richard King and his fellow House Band members Brendan Carthy on drums, Pat Murphy on bass, Derrick King on acoustic guitar, Vicky Clancy on saxophone and Eddie Crean on electric guitar, the Enniscorthy’s Got Talent style event hosted a total of
twenty-five talented and well known performers including Therese Canavan, Benny Redmond, Jamie Murphy, Sean Flood, Martin Sheehan, Paul Hogan, Rob Brady, to mention but a few, and attracted a full house to the popular venue to hear all the old Creedence Clearwater Revival favourites. Billed as a Creedence Clearwater Rivival charity fundraising event it was a wonderful night of entertainment and nostalgia, my own particular specials were Who’ll Stop The Rain beautifully delivered by the multitalented Fintan Kelly – is there no end to this man’s capabil-
ities, Run Through The Jungle in the gutsy, grainy tones of Myles Mulally, a powerful rendition of Wrote A Song For Everyone by Enniscorthy diva Therese Canavan, Lodi by the versatile and soulful Martin Sheehan, Before You Accuse Me by the singing bar-keeper himself, Niall Holohan, accompanied by the youngest performer of the evening, Niall’s ten-year-old son Patrick on drums, and a mean drummer he is and most certainly destined for bigger things, and one of my all-time favourites Proud Mary belted out brilliantly by chief organiser herself, Roisin Williams.
Tremendous credit to all performers who gave freely of their time and talent to entertain us and raise funds for this most deserving charity. Well done to all involved. – Maria Nolan Clockwise from top: Fintan Kelly singing ‘Who’ll Stop the Rain’. Myles Mulally singing ‘Run Through the Jungle’. Roisin Williams with ‘Proud Mary’. Riverside Park Hotel continues The musical ‘All Shook Up’– Festival Sponsorship a real treat in Enniscorthy As Enniscorthy prepares to celebrate the 51st Strawberry Fair and Street Rhythms Festival over the June bank holiday weekend, the Riverside Park Hotel has announced its continuation of sponsorship for the festival by kindly sponsoring the Festival Ball. Traditionally, the festival ball is the main glitz and glamour event of the Fair and Street Rhythms Festival and is used to introduce the Fair Princesses to the general public. Wo r k i s a l re a d y a t a n advanced stage of selecting the princesses for this year’s Fair with many town-centre businesses having already put forward their choice for the coveted crown which is presently held by Megan O’ Shea, a member of the teaching staff of St. Patrick’s Special School. Megan has had a busy year in her role as Queen of the Strawberry Fair and Street Rhythms Festival and is looking forward to handing over her crown to her successor who will be selected at an outdoor concert in the Market Square on Sunday night, June 3rd. Meanwhile, the Riverside Park Hotel will host a champ a g n e re c e p t i o n f o r t h e princesses prior to the festival ball and will also part-sponsor a sumptuous dinner, wine included, for the expected attendance of over 300. The ball will take place on Thursday night, May 31st, with ‘Wrecking Ball’ providing the music. General Manager of the Riverside Park Hotel, Mr. Jim Maher, in announcing his hotel’s continued sponsorship of the Strawberry Fair and Street Rhythms Festival, said he was delighted to be associated with the event which is now in its 51st year. The Strawberry Fair and Street Rhythms Festival is synonomous with Enniscorthy, he said, and attracts huge crowds to the town. The financial spinoff from the Fair is quite considerable, he added, and as a result all businesses in the town benefit from what is traditionally seen as the start of the summer and tourist season.
Mr. Maher acknowledged that mid-summer festivals, such as the Strawberry Fair and Street Rhythms Festival, are not as popular as they once were but emphasised that the Strawberry Fair and Street Rhythms Festival has stood the test of time and continues to provide excellent entertainment for young and old alike. He is satisfied this year will be no exception before expressing his delight at hearing the Garda Band and the Army No. 1 band will be making guest appearances during this year’s event. Acknowledging the contribution the Riverside Park Hotel has made to the success of the Strawberry Fair and Street Rhythms Festival, Jimmy Gahan, Festival Chairman, said that without the wholehearted support of the business community, the Fair could not and would not survive. He lauded the management and staff of the Riverside Park Hotel and said their financial input over many years allowed the Fair to con-

tinue and prosper. Last year’s 50th anniversary event, he added, was an outstanding success due, in the main, to the financial input of local businesses such as the Riverside Park Hotel and, of course, Enniscorthy Municipal District Council. This year’s festival, he promised, would meet the expectations of visitors to Enniscorthy and if blessed with fine weather, Mr. Gahan was certain attendance figures would surpass last year’s record number of visitors to Enniscorthy over the June Bank Holiday weekend. n

The flame of hope was certainly burning brightly in New Ross on Wednesday evening 28th March as this year`s Darkness Into Light walk was launched at the Dunbrody Visitor Centre. Ger Tobin of the New Ross DIL Committee welcomed members of the Wexford and Enniscorthy DIL Committees to the launch and Brian Higgins CEO of Pieta House thanked Kevin Ryan of Electric Ireland for their continued and valued sponsorship of the Darkness Into Light fundraiser which now takes place at 180
venues around the world and involves over 180,000 people walking in support of suicide prevention. Last year, he told the Dunbrody audience, Darkness Into Light raised four and a half million for Pieta House. 36,000 people have to date used the services of Pieta House and it hasn’t cost them a penny to do so thanks, Brian said, to all the magnificent committees and volunteers working all over Ireland and in 12 other countries around the globe. ‘Darkness Into Light’, Brian
said, ‘has replaced the stigma of suicide with acceptance, when you speak about suicide and take it out of the shadows you defeat it.’ Rapparees/Starlights were delighted to be represented at the County launch by committee members Maria Nolan and Tom Boland and look forward to a huge crowd at Bellefield GAA Complex at 4am on Saturday 12th May to walk together from darkness into light. All registration is done online this year so remember to register online now.

Are You Welcome back to all things about dancing in the south east, past and present. I suppose one of biggest changes involving the social dance scene since the last issue was the change in legislation regarding the licensing laws on Good Fridays. The Intoxicating Liquor Act of 1927 also banned drinking on St. Patrick's Day, but that was lifted in the early 60's. But it took 90 years to bring about the same change on Good Fridays. As I've said in a previous issue of the Slaney News, dancing was totally banned by the church during the whole period of Lent so for dancers this decision was a poignant one in so much as it wasn't about being able to have a drink on a Good Friday, but being able to go to a dance in a venue that held a liquor licence, which in truth is most dancehalls across the country. I often think it was a pity the church felt the need to take such a strong stance against dancing. While preaching that a couple who prayed together, stayed together, (and I'm sure the odd one did!), it was far more likely that a couple who danced together would stay together. Fri 6th April; Askamore Community Hall has Adrian Ryan. Camross Ballroom has Peter Burke.

He contributes a regular music and dance column to the Slaney News. Sun 8th April; Oylgate Community Centre has Tom Healy. Fri 13th April; Bellefield GAA has Jimmy Hogan & Lar kenny. Fri 16th April; Marshalstown Hall has Declan Aungier. Sun 27th April; kiltealy Hall has Checkers. On the regular dance scene the Talbot Hotel in Wexford on Sunday nights has Pat Costello/Jimmy Hogan & Lar kenny/Leslie & John for April. Harney's Ballyedmond have their weekly Sat/Sun/Mon dances with artists such as Liam Mannering/Johnny Mullen/Checkers/Nigel Livingstone/Brendan Lee/Theresa & The Stars/Limelite/Just Two/The Wicklow Man all part of their April line up. The Ashdown Park Gorey is on Wednesday nights but

It doesn't look like the Monday night dance in The Rising Sun, Mullinavat, run by Bobby Jackman is going ahead for the near future so they will continue in The Springhill Hotel kilkenny until further notice. Ballykealy Manor also on Monday nights has Fran Curry & Muriel O'Connor/Peter Burke/John Molloy/Adrian Ryan/Brendan Magee for the month of April. The Woodford Dolmen on Thursday nights has Curtis Magee/Limelite/Checkers/Dave Lawlor for their April line up. The Ardattin Inn runs every Friday with Frank Nelson/Liam

Mannering/Peter Burke this month. Good Friday saw its big band night with Cliona Hagan. The Parkview House Shillelagh has social dancing every Saturday with this month’s line-up consisting of Irish knights/Bernie Heaney/Twice Shy/ T.R. Dallas. It was with great sadness that we heard the news of the passing of the very popular Bansha accordionist Sam O’Doherty on 23rd of March. Sam O’Doherty R.I.P.
As one of Ireland’s best known entertainers, having enjoyed success here and abroad, he was fondly known as 'the man from the Glen' to his fans in America and Canada. Sam's music was a regular feature on radio stations across Ireland and at many social dance venues. tional, while the Enniscorthy Strings Group comprises of talented musicians from the Enniscorthy area whose love of music and song is reflected in their performances. The concert, for which tickets are presently on sale at €10 each, will be attended by the Catholic Bishop of Ferns, Dr. Denis Brennan DD and his Church of Ireland counterpart, Dr. Michael Burrows, Bishop of Cashel Ferns and Ossary. Tickets are presently on sale from the following outlets: O’Leary Travel, Main Street; Eric Barron, Main Street; Creane and Creane, Main Street; Barrie Sutton, Abbey Square; Eddie
Watchorn, Old Dublin Road; P.E. Kelly Insurances, Slaney Place; and Fr. Odhran Furlong, St. Aidan’s Parish Office. Tickets, if still available, can also be purchased at St Mary’s Church on the Sunday night of the concert. The organ in St. Mary’s is of significant value both historically and as a musical instrument. It was built by William Gray of London and is one of his few remaining organs still in existence today. The organ was installed in St. Mary’s Church in the late 1800s and has provided musical accompaniment to church services in St. Mary’s ever since. It is now in need of major refurbishment, however, and Sunday night’s concert is designed to raise funds to help meet that cost. n

Local Gardaí in the spotlight Gardaí in Enniscorthy were in the headlines last month as they successfully foiled a gangland hit by arresting two men in the Gorey area. The men, who both have Dublin addresses, were detained in Enniscorthy and Gorey Garda stations under the provisions of Section 30 – Offences Against the State Act 1939/98. Three cars and two handguns were seized by the Gardai in the incident which is believed to be linked to the Hutch-Kinahan gangland feud. A Garda spokesman said: "As a result of an intelligenceled operation conducted by Garda Detectives from Enniscorthy, Co. Wexford, assisted by Armed Support Units from the South Eastern Region and Special Crime Operations, two men have been arrested and firearms and ammunition seized.” The incident has strengthened local Sinn Féin Councillor, Johnny Mythen’s call for the government to reverse the downgrading of Gorey Garda District. "These arrests highlight once again why the

downgrading of Gorey Garda District must be reversed and garda numbers restored to adequate levels. “Gorey's superintendent was cut; its Garda numbers went from 55 in 2010 down to 46 at present; Courtown station was closed down despite some major crime lords moving from Dublin to North Wexford, particularly to the coastal areas. In November we had co-ordinated CAB raids in both Gorey and Dublin. At present we are seeing the heroin problem in Gorey becoming worse… Garda resources must be prioritised here as a matter of urgency." n

Annual Photography Exhibition @ Enniscorthy VTOS, Gonzaga House, Wafer St, 19th April 2018. With spring approaching , the students of Enniscorthy VTOS have been busy preparing for their Annual Photography Exhibition at their further education and training centre in the former St. John of God’s building on upper Wafer Street. All are welcome to view the display and visit the iconic building with the green roof, and see its transformation into a modern Adult Education Centre. As part of their QQI level 3 Digital Photography module, the students were asked to take a range of photographs covering topics from portraits to landscapes and macro to abstract. From taking the pictures to editing and printing, the class gives the students the ability and confidence to take interesting pictures and communicate visually.
The students learn the workings of their cameras (or the ones provided). From there they look at how to compose a photo, with tips and ideas of how to improve. They also edit their photos and discover what can be done with a computer to enhance the images. To get inspiration, the students research the masters of visual communication, from Robert Capa to Bresson and Dali to Banksy. In this digital age, with social networking and advertising, we are all bombarded with photos and images. The skills and ideas required to work in these fields are valued, but in our private lives the ability to capture a moment in time, with confidence, can be priceless. The aim and goal of the class is to get the students to record their lives and the things they like to see, and to share them, and to be able to look back in the future and say, ‘I took that.’ So go along on 19th April and escape the everyday. n

St Patrick’s School goes close to winning the Easter Egg Cup!
St Patrick’s School, Enniscorthy – the gallant runners-up.
St Patrick’s School, Enniscorthy, were 14 matches unbeaten going into the game with the school soccer coaching scheme coaches last month, level on points, and with the Easter Egg Cup up for grabs.
St Patrick’s were hoping to go the season unbeaten but found themselves 4-3 down at half-time with a hat-trick from Dylan Larkin for St Pat’s and two for Larry Shannon and one each for Jake O’Rourke and
Ryan Dwyer of the coaches. There was an energetic start to the second half with St Pat’s forging 7-4 ahead without reply with four goals from Ned Connors. Johnny Whelan was sent off for the coaches which

gave urgency to the coaches play as they forged ahead 107 with no reply from St Pat’s as Craig Dwyer scored a hat-trick as did Daithi O’Brien. In the last ten minutes St Pat’s scored 3 from Holly
Levingston which left it level. But it was not to be for St Pat’s as Jamie Fox broke their hearts by scoring from a freekick in the last minute to take the title 11-10 and claim the Easter Egg Cup.
Sincere thanks to the staff and students of St Patrick’s, the coaching scheme, Wexford County Council and FAI development officer William Doyle. The event co-ordinator was Cllr John O'Rourke, head coach. n

Nationally, the results from the Annual Employment Survey, compiled by Enterprise Ireland, show that there are now 37,485 people employed by 7,182 small businesses and start-ups that have received s u p p o r t f ro m t h e L o c a l Enterprise Offices. 30,373 people participated in 1,891 different training programmes with the LEOs, including ‘Start Your Own Business’ and ‘Management Development’ courses. 8,393 mentoring assignments took place between small

The 31 LEOs nationwide, run in partnership by Enterprise I re l a n d a n d t h e L o c a l Authorities, provide a ‘first stop shop’ for the supports available to entrepreneurs, startups and small businesses. Speaking during ‘Local Enterprise Week,’ Minister for Business Enterprise and Innovation Heather Humphreys said: “This Government has a clear focus on regional jobs and investment, and the LEOs play a crucial role in this effort, particularly through the Regional Actions Plans for Jobs. I am delighted that the job results for 2017 are so strong, and look forward to further collaboration with the LEOs in 2018.” Tom Banville, Head of Enterprise with Local Enterprise Office Wexford said: “The key message we would like to get across is that if you want to either start or grow your own business in 2018, come and talk to your Local Enterprise Office. Speaking in relation to the government’s Project Ireland 2014, local Sinn Féin Councillor Johnny Mythen says, “Rosslare Europort is abandoned in the 2040 plan.” Cllr Mythen says the ports projects mentioned in the government’s 2040 plan include the Alexander Basin Redevelopment Project at Dublin Port, redevelopment of existing port facilities at Ringaskiddy, and capacity extension works at ShannonFoynes Port. Not a mention of Rosslare port? This is an economic blunder of the highest order, according to Cllr Mythen, not just for the future of Wexford but for the whole country. Ports are a pivotal vessel by which import and export markets throughout the European Union operate and function. Rosslare port is strategically and geographically well

placed to Europe and England. Rosslare is the second largest roll-on-roll-off port, and is the second largest for passenger carriage in the country.
The container form of transportation of goods has revolutionised the world markets. Therefore the tooling up for future development and modernisation of Rosslare Port will be a major factor in determining the commercial success of the region and has the best potential to stimulate real growth and provide real jobs Post Brexit, he says, this port will be a vital economic and commerce connection because it is geographically the main doorway to the south east and west of the country. The fact that the government’s 2040 plan has not included Rosslare port as one of its main projects is alarming. “In my opinion this decision must be challenged because to leave such a vital port out is failing our county, our country and is contrary to good sound economics,” concluded Cllr Mythen. n
Wexford Live Register down 14% In February this year the number of people on the Live Register in Co. Wexford was down 14% on the previous year according to Minister with responsibility for Defence Paul Kehoe TD. Nationally, unemployment has fallen steadily from a peak of 16% in 2012 to 6% in February 2018. In Wexford, the number of people on the live register now stands at 10,737, compared to 12,511 in February last year. This represents an annual decline of 14%. There are now almost 9,000 fewer people on the Live Register in Wexford since the
Action Plan for Jobs was launched in 2012. Minister Kehoe said, “We can see clearly that the Action Plan for Jobs is continuing to work. Recent jobs data indicates that there are 48,100 more people at work since this time last year. Our enterprise-based economy is now creating over 900 jobs a week. “This good news for Wexford comes as the CSO revealed that the Live Register has fallen below 234,000 nationally, the lowest since 2008. This figure represents a year on year decrease of 14%. “But we must not be com-
placent. I want to see more initiatives that result in the numbers falling even further here in Wexford. “Jobs are also growing in rural Ireland, with 9 out of every 10 jobs created in the past year outside of Dublin. And these are not just in the commuter belt, with 7 out of every 10 jobs created outside of Dublin, Kildare, Meath and Wicklow. “We are moving towards full employment and we will ensure that all parts of Ireland can share in our prosperity and economic growth, including here in Co. Wexford.” n

This month, Joe Kavanagh ponders on the effects of the poor weather so far this Spring The weather is still the main topic of conversation out on farms. The lack of fine weather, even dry weather, means its difficult for farmers to let their stock out on the land. For one, they've not much to eat out there and also if the ground is too wet the animals tear up the fields very easily and damage it for the grazing season. In addition, most farmers are either running low on winter feed or have already run out. It's unusual in Co. Wexford to have stock still housed at this time of year here. Up country they often gauge for this and our latest recruit, Padraig Murphy, who is a Monaghan native was saying it’s not unusual to have cows in until May!.... He's wondering what all the complaining is about!!! Padraig has joined us since graduating from Budapest in Hungary. He also has a degree in music and so has lots of talents. Our staff nights out should be very entertaining!!! Padraig is one of a growing number of Irish people who have gone abroad to study Veterinary Medicine. We are very happy to welcome him into the team and he has slotted in well in the few weeks that he's been with us. Timely reminders are flea treatments, annual vaccinations especially if your dog or cat is going into kennels. Also just to reiterate from last month that cats come into season this time of year so if you've got a kitten/young cat you may want to think of the spaying/neutering option soon before they're active!!! If you have any queries feel free to call in or ring. Our staff are always happy to help. n
If you have a topic you’d like our vet to address please text us at SLANEY NEWS 087-2403310 or email: slaneynews@gmail.com
GETTING TOUGH ON DOG FOULING Plain-clothes Litter Wardens are being deployed across Co. Wexford in a bid to catch inconsiderate dog owners who aren’t cleaning up after their pets. In response to concerns that litter offences may be on the increase across Wexford, Wexford County Council has launched a series of initiatives aimed at identifying and prosecuting those responsible. The plain clothes council staff will be working during “dog walking hours” on established routes to address the growing problem of dog litter.

A local contributor looks at life today in Enniscorthy and beyond The flood Relief sCheme T h e p re s e n t s t a t u s o f t h e Enniscorthy Flood Relief Scheme seems to be that we are getting there. According to our public representatives, exploratory works should begin very shortly. This is to be welcomed. While on the face of it the getting to where we are now has taken quite some time it has to be recognised that these processes are very complicated. Every stage has to be presented for public consultation and the rights of those who wish to make submissions – for or against – must be respected. With most of that behind us now I assume that we will shortly see activity close to the river. Of course, this major operation will lead to some disruption when the works are being carried out and patience will be needed, particularly for those who operate businesses close to t h e r i v e r. P a r k i n g a t t h e Promenade is bound to be affected when the main works commence, and alternative spaces will have to be found. The main thing is that this scheme is long overdue, and the end result will justify any temporary disruption to our lives when works are in progress. Credit is due to
our local authorities, councillors and TDs, for doggedly pursuing this most important project. The RussiAns So, our government has decided to join with the rest of Europe and other parts of the world in ganging up on the Russians. At the time of writing it apparently has been agreed by the Cabinet to expel at least one diplomat in retaliation for the chemical attack in Britain. It is difficult to assess what effect this action will have with regard to future relationships between Ireland and Russia. The expelling of one diplomat will, in the overall, have little international effect but may have other consequences for this country down the line. Double standards are common in international relations with governments totally ignoring blatant crimes by so-called allies and then reacting adversely to mere suspicions when it suits the mood of the day. The well known journalist, Vincent Browne, posted on Facebook as follows: “If expulsion of Russian diplomats is ok because of the SUSPECTED involvement of Russia in two attempted murders, what then the appropriate response to the ACTUAL Britain’s
Pic: ©Joseph Doyle
View from the Hill involvement in the ACTUAL murders of 33 people in Dublin and Monaghan bombings in May 1974?” Must say I couldn’t agree more. Pensions AgAin People on Contributory Old Age Pensions will have received a massive increase of a fiver a week by now. Well some of them will. Those affected by Joan Burton’s 2012 pension cuts will receive a lot less. These cuts in 2012 were mean and disgraceful. They attacked people in society when they were at their most vulnerable. Ironically the people attacked
by the cuts were those who in the 1970s and 1980s paid tax at the highest level and kept this country going during very difficult times. The government in office in 2012 made up of Fine Gael and Labour decided to thank those people by cutting their pensions. Apologists for those politicians argue that despite the cuts Irish pensions are still higher than pensions paid in other countries. So, therefore, the affected pensioners should suck it up as they say. The same politicians never point out that in comparison to other countries the salaries of our Dáil Deput ies and Ministers are much higher than
their counterparts in countries with far greater populations than ours. I saw recently published figures to demonstrate this as follows: Slovakia - Population 5.4m, Prime Minister’s salary €45,000. Spain - Population 46m, Prime Minister’s salary €78,000. Italy - Population 58m, Prime Minister ’s salary €115,000. Ireland - Population 4.8m, Prime Minister’s salary €185,000. I suppose it’s because Leo says he’s worth it. And these are the same people who are too mean-spirited to give the Old Age Pensioners of this country, the people who built it, a straight fiver across the board. They should stand with bowed heads. CondiTion of CounTy RoAds The condition of our secondary and county roads is appalling. The recent spate of very bad weather certainly has not helped those trying to maintain them. The outlook for improvement any time soon is bleak as the funds are not available. Thirty years ago the return time for any major works on secondary or county roads was about eight to ten years. In other
words we could expect resurfacing once each decade approximately. The present return time is estimated at forty-five years. That’s not a misprint. The reason for this is that it is impossible for local authorities to raise the finance to carry out the necessary works. Their ability to raise funds is limited. There is only so much weight that the ratepayers can carry. Local Property Tax revenue is somewhat capped for the same reason that property owners can only pay so much. The usual response of local politicians is to complain that the roads grants have been reduced by central government and should be increased. The bottom line here is that central government is not some monolith which prints money to throw around like confetti. Central government gets the money from you and I and we are not keen to give them any more. So other than bringing Solomon back, it’s difficult to see as to how this can be solved. In the meantime, get used to driving on substandard roads. n We are often asked: Who is the “View from the Hill” columnist? All we can say is that the author’s surname is NOT Doyle!

seat arona The seAT Arona is seAT’s new compact crossover based on the excellent seAT ibiza supermini. sporting a raised ride height and gruffer offroad looks, the Arona range starts from €17,995 in ireland and is sure to attract a lot of fans. For buyers looking for a larger SUV, SEAT already offers the Ateca. But the new SEAT Arona slots neatly into
the burgeoning B-SUV segment. The Arona uses the Volkswagen Group’s new small car platform and has been honed and tweaked to make it a formidable competitor in its segment where the Renault Captur currently reigns supreme. Though compact in size, SEAT has really made great use of the space available. The Arona is one of the roomi-

est of its ilk and the footwells in the rear are generously sized so it feels anything but cramped back there. The Arona can house a good 400 litres in its boot and the flat loading sill makes it practical for every day use. The rear doors also open wide. Inside the dashboard design is similar to the SEAT Ibiza supermini so there is a clear, logical layout and a nice
mix of materials to add interest to the harder plastics. Infotainment is provided via a 5” or 8” touchscreen depending on model, with Apple Car Play and Android Auto available on all but the base model. In Ireland the Arona is offered in four trims: S, SE, Xcellence and FR. Standard equipment includes electric windows, air con, Bluetooth

every month Bunclody native Caroline Kidd brings you the best from the world of motoring, including car reviews, news and more. Caroline is a member of the irish motoring Writers’ Association (imWA) and a jury member for irish Car of The year. you can follow her blog Changing lanes at www.changinglanes.ie. and Front Assist. SE (from €20,715) adds more including 16” alloys, LED taillights, front fog lights, leather steering wheel and cruise control. Buyers looking for more equipment and individuality can select and Xcellence or FR model. Both are similarly priced from €22,815, with the Xcellence being pitched as the more upmarket one and the FR pitched as the sporty one with the SEAT Drive Profile Selection to spice things up behind the wheel and sportier styling. My Xcellence test car was very well equipped with keyless entry, some updates to styling including special alloys, chrome trim and chrome roof rails, parking sensors and camera, park assist and a special interior finish. Equipped with SEAT’s excellent 1.0TSI turbo petrol engine with 115hp, this model has a competitive list price of €22,815. This model is cheap to run with motor tax costing €200 per year. My fuel economy was 6.5l/100km over a week of driving. Other engine options include the 1.0TSI petrol with 95hp, 1.5TSI petrol with 150hp and a 1.6TDI diesel with 95hp. But the 1.0TSI really is a star performer in the Arona: it’s
nippy and refined with a perfect spread of power whether driving on motorway, town or country roads. Add on top of this the Arona’s agility, quick steering and supple suspension and you have one of the best compact crossovers to drive. It’s fair to say the compact crossover market in Ireland is loaded with competitors but if you go to check out the SEAT Arona you will find a fantastic all-rounder. The Arona offers great space and practicality on board for this class of vehicle. It’s compact, agile and fun to drive making it a great small family car. The Arona is competitively priced with lots of equipment and technology available so deserves to do very well in its segment. model TesTed: seAT Arona Xcellence 1.0Tsi 115hp Price: €22,815 (Range from €17,995) Engine: 1.0-litre turbo petrol Power: 115hp Torque: 200Nm 0-100km/h: 10 seconds Top speed: 182km/h Economy: 4.9l/100km CO2 emissions: 113g/km Motor tax: €200 per year n

TV NEWS…
TV NEWS… There’s not a lot of good stuff on the TV so far this year but if you, like me, like to relax in front of the TV then here’s a couple of series you should watch – both of them are really funny. Now in its fourth series, Hardy Bucks is set in the fictional town of Castletown in Co. Mayo and tells the story of two happy-go-lucky lads who are best mates. Buzz, played by Owen Colgan, and Eddie, played by series creator, Martin Moloney. Then there’s Eddie’s girlfriend, Ciara, who would turn on you in a minute and I tell you I would not like to cross her – I saw this come to light in episode two in the chip shop and her language was a little blue! Let’s just say poor Eddie, like all us men, can’t get a word in edgeways when herself is in a bad mood! Ciara is played by Aoibheann McCaul who plays Caoimhe Dillon in Fair City. Being in both series means she has to do a lot of toing and froing between sets and shows. When Eddie tells Buzz he’s

moving out of the cottage, a series of mishaps follows with a funny drug scene involving Eddie when he buys what turns out to be Johnson’s Baby Powder! Hardy Bucks will have you on the floor in stitches laughing. It’s written by Mick Cockayne, Martin Maloney and Chris Tordoff. It’s on Thursdays at 10.45pm on RTE. Damo and Ivor is another TV show containing typical Dublin humour. It stars creator, Aidan Quirke, as both Damo and Ivor. Damo is a ‘how’s it going bud’ type living in a housing estate with his grano. He dresses with a tracksuit and big-peaked baseball cap and loads of bling while his twin brother, Ivor, was brought up by posh folks in a big house in dublin and has a D4 accent and dresses with a neat pair of trousers, polo shirts, and with a Robbie William’s haircut. The series follows the fortunes of these two contrasting Dublin stereotypes. It’s on Mondays at 9.30pm on RTE. – Joseph Doyle

Club sponsor makes major announcement at dinner dance Rapparees/starlights gAA Club celebrated in style on friday night, 9th march, at the Riverside Park hotel and in truth they had a lot to feel happy about. The large crowd of 270 plus were enjoying the presentation of county medals to no less than three teams – Junior Camogie, U-21 Football and Senior Football and also remembering 100 years of the Starlights football club. MC’ed by former Chairman John Browne, who was actually in the Chair when the county titles were won, he first called on County Chairman Derek Kent to address the audience of players, members and friends. Derek was lavish in his praise of the club and all those working in a voluntary capacity for it, saying that it was in safe hands under the careful guidance of Chairman Michael Doyle and his hard-working committee. Derek had special mention for those in the club who were also involved at county level – players Kevin Foley and Liam Ryan who he said are leaders with the county senior hurling team and Nick Doyle, Pa Doyle and Darragh Pepper who are putting in trojan work with the county senior footballers, Maria Nolan, Tom Boland and Adrian Fenlon who are deeply involved with raising funds at Wexford GAA. Medals were presented to the Junior Camogie team by Adrian Fenlon and Declan Skippy Ruth, while playermanager Sarah Murphy said what a privilege it had been to work with a great bunch of girls in 2017 and she looked forward to progressing a step further this year. Current Chairman Michael Doyle had the height of praise for the U-21 and senior footballers and in particular manager Joe O`Hagan and selector Purt Doyle, complimenting the latter on his major contribution to the club over many years, coming through the ranks at underage and making it all the way to senior level. Michael said that he was also

convinced that the introduction of Joe O`Hagan to the club was the catalyst needed to deliver success in 2017. Purt Doyle and brothers Jayo and Anto Russell then made the medal presentation to the victorious U-21 team. Manager Joe O`Hagan spoke from the heart of his team and his fellow selector Purt Doyle, saying that his job was made easy having a man like Purt beside him, who knew not only his own players and all their strengths and weaknesses but also knew the strengths and weaknesses of any and all opposition. Joe was both humorous and passionate when mentioning each of his players and also had a word of thanks for physio Joe Cullen, John Browne and Michael Doyle. He thanked Maria Nolan for her help during the 2017 campaign and said that the photographs of the aftermath of the County Final, both on the billboards and running on the loop in the function room, were treasured memories to have and to keep over the years. Joe said that he was looking forward with relish to the
coming season and has no doubt with the talent available in the club that it won’t be 13 years before it wins its next title. A framed collage of the county final was presented by Captain Tom Wall to both Joe and Purt, saying that he was indeed privileged to be chosen as captain of the team in the 100 anniversary year of the Starlights and delighted to work with both men and lead a fantastic bunch of lads to a county title. In 2017, Tom said, ‘The boys became men and the men thought they were boys again.’ He thanked all those who had gone before and worked over the years in the club, without whom the victory wouldn`t have been possible. C l u b s p o n s o r, S a m McCauley, praised all the work that was being done at Bellefield resulting in the 2017 success. He had a special mention for former Club President, Martin Doyle, and said that it was lovely to see all his family present for this most special occasion. Sam said that although

himself and wife Leslie were now retired he had handed over to another staunch GAA man from County Meath. Tony McEntee, the new CEO of the McCauley Group, has already confirmed that the company is happy to sponsor the club for the next three years and Sam brought the entire Riverside audience to their feet announcing a most generous sponsorship from Leslie and himself to complete outstanding and necessary work at the Bellefield venue. Player, Jack Kelly, then read a poem written by himself titled Starlights 2017 and a presentation of a framed copy was made to both Joe and Purt. What a way to finish the formal part of the evening and what a wonderful way to begin out new season and our most sincere and grateful thanks to Sam and Leslie for their long, constant and continued support of Rapparees/Starlights. The dancing and merriment continued into the early hours with those present contending that it was one of the best Bellefield nights ever. – maria Nolan

Enniscorthy Girls Rugby WiCKloW 34 ennisCoRThy 7 enniscorthy u-16s travelled up the n11 on good friday evening hopeful of causing an upset against all conquering Wicklow in this leinster girls u16 Premier division semi-final but it was not to be. Six tries to one doesn’t tell the whole story. Enniscorthy battled from first minute to last with the territory and possession stats pretty even but the Wicklow girls
were just that bit more clinical in defence and more decisive in attack. A 27 point defeat is hard to take and while the girls left everything on the pitch, they all made a couple of small errors that a top team like Wicklow, who are by a long way the best team in the province, will always punish. This Enniscorthy team has come a long way in only 2 seasons and now ranks 4th in Leinster. n

Wolves, Stars & Cupcakes at the Castle it was a pleasure to be present at the launch of The girl Who ate the Stars on friday 16th march at enniscorthy Castle, written by my dear friend and Vice-Chair of Wexford literary festival, Caroline Busher. Caroline is the Sorceress of magnificent tales and her second novel The Girl Who Ate The Stars is the imaginative adventure of Lottie and Albert, evacuated from wartime Manchester to rural Wexford, where not everything is as it seems. A mysterious and chilling tale of a German bomb exposing an ancient and menacing underworld of wolves, stars and mystic menace. Launching the intriguing tale Tomm Moore, filmmaker, animator, illustrator, comic artist and co-founder of Cartoon Saloon, Kilkenny, said that Caroline was a wonderful storyteller who writes beautifully and isn’t afraid to explore the
dark side, making her work both interesting and creative. Caroline, looking vintage and charming in buttercup yellow, said she was thrilled with the turnout on the night and delighted that someone of the calibre of Tomm More had agreed to launch for her. She thanked her husband, John, her children and her parents and friends for their constant support, she was lavish in her praise of the talents of Superstars Stage Academy who had performed several excellent musical numbers for the Castle audience and Damian Byrne and Byrne’s Book Shop for their continued belief in her and her work, Art Bank Bunclody for the papier-mâché wolf that sat quietly by the Castle fireplace throughout proceedings without as much as a wuff, the staff of the Castle, her daughter Caoimhe for the delicious, ornate and colourful

on Thursday evening, 22nd march, at enniscorthy library, the celebrated local historian and 1798 expert Brian Clery gave a detailed account of the Battle of Vinegar hill to a packed audience. The very knowledgeable Mr. Clery whetted the appetite with background information saying that from 1792 onwards Wexford was ‘heaving with revolution’, with the ideals and aspirations of the 1789 French Revolution reverberating strongly throughout the county. Brian went on to give detailed movements of Generals Lake, Needham, Loftus, Dundas and Duff, Eustace and Johnston as they made their approach towards Vinegar Hill on that fateful day, 21st June 1798, from Oulart, Solsborough, Carnew, Bunclody and New Ross respectively and peppered his account
with many little anecdotes including some about his own ancestors the McCauleys. He had tremendous praise for the Wicklow men who fought bravely and well with the Wexford men on Vinegar Hill saying that at that time there wasn’t the same county divides that we know today. The casualties of the day he said were 70/80 on the Crown Forces side and anything up to 1,500 rebel dead. Vinegar Hill was the first time explosive shells were used in Ireland and even though it was the 11th battle of the Rising, with 21 battles in total, 10 before and 10 after it, and it was a major defeat, it is the battle of Vinegar Hill that has echoed through the generations and is synonymous the world over with 1798. – maria Nolan
