With some uncertainty over the future location of the 1798 Centre exhibition, it’s nice to see Enniscorthy’s history to the fore in a very positive way this month. A major 3-day archaeological conference about the Vinegar Hill Battlefield will take place

25-27th May (see details page 19). This will be followed on 1517th June with the Vinegar Hill Battle Re-enactment Festival. Meanwhile the town’s industrial history is highlighted in a major new exhibition in Enniscorthy Castle and is highly recommended. See page 10. n

Tech Tip

WhAt is Dns?

FERNS COMPUTER SERVICES

DNS is short for Domain Name System. It is an internet protocol that allows user systems to use domain names/URLs to identify a web server rather than inputting the actual IP address. For example, the IP address for yahoo.ie is 212.82.100.151, but rather than typing that into your browser, you just type ‘yahoo.ie,’ and your system reaches out to a ‘DNS Server’ which has a list of all domain names and their corresponding IP address. Unfortunately, if a popular DNS server is taken down or in some way disrupted, many users are unable to reach their favourite websites. When trying to explain the concept of DNS name resolution, I think that finding a phone number for a certain person is a good analogy. There are several ways to find a person’s phone number and the same is true for resolving an IP address that belongs to a domain name.

WhiCh dns sERVERs aM i usinG nOW?

by DaviD pohluDek Ferns compuTer services

There’s a big chance that you are using the DNS service provided by your internet provider. And while some of those are quite good, others are deplorable. Those that have looked into changing their DNS servers have probably ended up using Google’s public DNS, or if they were also interested in a web filter, they might have ended up using Cisco’s OpenDNS. Those are the two most popular alternatives for the ones provided by ISPs around the globe, but many more are available. The method to change your DNS servers depends on the level at which you want to change them. If you have tried the DNS service and decide that you like it, it might be advisable to change the DNS servers at the router level. For mobile devices, be aware that they will change DNS servers when they are no longer using your router (modem). Ferns Coputer Services has been in business in Ferns since May 2007. Established by David Pohludek, it has a huge clientele base all over Co. Wexford and beyond.

this year’s National Tidy Town Competition and in organising the accompanying documentation. It is hoped to improve on the success of recent years when we were awarded a bronze medal in 2015, 2016 and 2017.

The Association is seeking a more determined effort from Government to seriously tackle the disgusting habit of some of our population who indulge in illegal dumping all over the country. They must be sought out, named and shamed and dealt with severely by the law. We are great for passing laws but weak on enforcing them. We have an attractive historic little town and a scenic countryside which is our heritage and we of this generation should improve it, maintain it, conserve it and pass it on to future generations to appreciate and enjoy. – Seán Doyle Secretary/Treasurer Enniscorthy Tidy Town Association.

Persistance pays off for St. Patrick’s School the department of Education has confirmed that st Patrick’s special school has moved to the next stage in the tendering process. According to local Minister Paul Kehoe TD, “That tender was made active yesterday [13th April] and ground could now be broken on the school in around six months. Minister Kehoe added, “Huge credit to Lee Rogers, the school principal and all of the parents and teachers who have pushed this so hard.

“I myself have repeatedly lobbied the department over St Patrick’s and I very much welcome this positive development.” Local Fianna Fáil TD James Browne also welcomed the news that, over 700 days after St. Patrick’s was promised a new school would be built, that prices from short-listed tender applicants are due to be submitted by 14th May. He vowed to maintain pressure on the Minister for Education and Skills, Richard

Lee Rogers, Principal

Bruton, to ensure that construction can commence as early as possible. D e p u t y B ro w n e a l s o praised the efforts of the school principal, Lee Rogers, staff, and the Board of Management for their persistence in getting the school delivered. n

Sean Doyle’s view on sale of 1798 Centre… Dear Editor,

RIVERSIDE PARK HOTEL – celebrating 20 years of service

The recent announcement by Wexford County Council to sell the building that accommodates what is known as the National 1798 Centre at Arnold’s Cross has saddened and disappointed me. From the beginning I was involved with Comoradh ’98 and acted as Treasurer throughout its existence. The origin and development, the optimistic hopes, the cruel desolation of the 1798 Rebellion are vividly depicted in an interactive audio-visual journey, both educational and entertaining. When opened it received international plaudits from visiting Historians and Professors of History as one of the best historical presentations of its kind and won awards. It cost a lot of money to establish the centre. As Treasurer of Comoradh ’98 I received some £750,000 from individuals who paid £2,000 each to become Wexford Senators. All their names are listed publicly in The Centre. The State and Local Government subscribed generously to the project. Comoradh ’98 also organised with others the many activities during the amazing year of the Bicentenary of the 1798 Rebellion in 1998. After the initial few years following the opening of the National 1798 Centre the visitor numbers dropped off. It is my opinion that the trauma of the 1798 Rebellion mainly affected the south-east of Ireland and a Centre interpreting its history and its consequences has a limited appeal. I believe that the 1916 Centenary had more of an impact on the country at large. There is some debate regarding the Centre and its re-location. It is my honest opinion; irrespective of its location, interpreting the history of the 1798 Rebellion is not a major attraction for visitors. Maybe, we should get together some historians and experts on trends to attract tourists and ask them to come up with ideas for an interpretive centre to embrace the totality of our history and literary heritage. Maybe the Courthouse should be considered as a site for such a venture. It is close to a car park and it would make use of a building not in use at present. It would cost an amount of finance to establish such an enterprise. Where there’s a will there’s a way! The opinions expressed in this letter are solely my own. Sean Doyle, Chairman, Board of Directors of 1798 National Centre. 23rd April 2018.

Beneath My Angels Wings to host charity walk Cllr John O'Rourke, Chairman of the beneath My angels Wings organisation which supports families bereaved of their children, has been in touch to highlight that the organisation is hosting a 5km family walk in Enniscorthy sports hub on 6th of May at 11am.

It is hoped to raise €3,500 to purchase a cuddle cot for Wexford General Hospital maternity unit. Beneath My Angels Wings is in partnership with Enniscorthy Municipal District Council for this event and is encouraging everyone to participate on the day. n

Over €2.2 million secured for women’s refuge Minister with responsibility for defence Paul Kehoe has confirmed that over 2.2 million euro has been secured to build 12 new apartments at the Wexford Women’s Refuge in Maudlintown. The funds will be approved by the Department of Housing and will be administered by Wexford County Council. Minister Kehoe welcomed the news and said the new apartments will ensure the centre can cater for a growing number of women and chil-

dren that avail of the vital services provided. “Virtually every single week, the cabinet of which I am a member, discusses the need to continue our efforts to boost the supply of housing,” Minister Kehoe said. “The services provided by Wexford Women’s Refuge are vital. We should never see a situation where women are turned away due to a lack of space and hopefully these new apartments will go some way to improving the services available,” he added. n

30th April 2018: Owner, Colm Neville, in the company of some of the hotel’s staff, cuts the cake to celebrate the 20 year anniversary of the opening of the Riverside Park Hotel in Enniscorthy. We’ll be carrying much more on this wonderful success story in our next issue.

More measures to tackle illegal dumping! Minister of state Paul Kehoe has confirmed that seven projects in Wexford have been included in the Government’s 2018 antidumping initiative. Over €63,000 has been approved to tackle and address the sources of illegal dumping. Only six counties in the country have received a higher level of funding. ● Drone surveys in Co. Wexford’s four main towns will take place. ● Three warden vehicles will be equipped with dash cameras in order to boost surveillance. ● A mattress amnesty will be

organised in Holmestown. CCTV monitoring, and clean up works. ● 32 skips will be provided for the Tidy Towns groups across the county. ● A couch amnesty will also be organised. ● Clean up of Gorey town, Ramsfort Park and Trespan Rocks. The provision of the funding will assist the council in tackling those who commit criminal acts against their communities by wilfully and irresponsibly dumping their waste, Minister Kehoe said. The Minister said he has been working closely with ●

his Cabinet colleague, Minister Denis Naughten, in developing measures that will target people who are spoiling our natural environment. “A wide range of clean-up and restorative projects led by community, environmental and sporting groups have been approved for funding,” the Fine Gael TD said. “Successful applications have included projects that will equip authorities with the latest enforcement technologies including overt and covert surveillance equipment and drone technology to target dumpers. “The aim is to reduce ille-

gal dumping by providing funding for projects tackling the problem and to develop an integrated and effective combined approach with local authorities, communities and other state agencies.” “Our communities are central to the success of the Anti-Dumping Initiative. While they are the victims of this crime they have demonstrated through their active participation with this initiative that they are not prepared to surrender their beaches, mountainside, parks or streets to those amongst us who don’t take responsibility for the waste that they produce.” n

paul kehoe to the fore on cyber safety

Minister with Responsibility for defence, Paul Kehoe td, has received an overwhelmingly positive response from schools and parents to his efforts to highlight the dangers associated with the internet. Minister Kehoe is supplying schools in Wexford with cyber safety booklets which provide parents and guardians with key advice and information on cyber security. The Fine Gael TD produced the booklet in response to new research which highlights the ever-prevalent risks to the young online. A CyberSafeIreland study shows that one in three young people aged between 8 and 13 rarely or never talk to their parents about online safety. And one in three of these are

in regular contact with strangers on the internet. The booklet contains some of the language used by online strangers, according to experts. While some of this language can be extreme and upsetting, the Minister said it is important that parents and guardians are armed with this sort of information. Several schools have already requested copies of the booklets for parents and guardians, Minister Kehoe said. An electronic version of the booklet can also be supplied from the Minister’s office for any interested parents or school authorities. Minister Kehoe said, “I will continue to circulate these cyber safety booklets to schools and parents across Wexford. It is

vital that we arm parents, guardians and teachers with the skillset they require to best assist our young generations in dealing with online dangers,” he added. Minister Kehoe said that consideration will now be given to the recommendations outlined in a report by t h e O i re a c h t a s Committee on Children and Youth Affairs. The report proposes the appointment of a Digital Safety Commissioner in order to improve safeguards for children. “It is essential that all stake-

holders work together to tackle the challenges that we as a society face. Society is becoming more and more dependent on technology – but that also brings its own risks. Let’s not bury our heads in the sand over this issue any longer.” n

Industries Expo at Enniscorthy Castle designed and organised by liam doyle with help from wife Jane and daughter Jenna and County archivist Grainne doran, the Enniscorthy industries Exhibition is an innovative look at the industries that began to grow and prosper in Enniscorthy from the 1600s onwards and for many town natives will be a very pleasant meander down memory lane with artifacts and curios from the milling and malting industries, the pottery, brewing and distilling industries, cutlery manufacturing, the strawberry industry and the carriage manufacturing industry to name but a few. Opened by Chairman of Enniscorthy District Council Keith Doyle who thanked Liam and Grainne and all the contributors to the Exhibition and

offering to locate a piece of memorabilia from the old Astor Cinema to add to the attractive and inventive collection. Town Manager, Liz Hore, MC for the proceedings, said that this Enniscorthy Industries showcase was both nostalgic and exciting and will be open to the people of the town to come in and reminisce and recall many of the Enniscorthy icons of the past. Liz called on historian Aidan Ryan, an expert on all things Enniscorthy, who gave an indepth account of the town`s industrial history telling that Queen Elizabeth 1 gave the town and 10,000 acres to the Earl of Portsmouth in the 1600`s and how many people in the town would remember paying ground rent to the Portsmouth Estate up to recent times and some could be still doing so today.

Cllr Johnny Mythen with Mary Lou McDonald at public meeting in the Talbot Hotel Wexford last month.

“Wexford deserves far better” "Wexford deserves far better," was the message from sinn féin leader Mary lou Mcdonald td following her visit to the county with liadh ni Riada MEP on 5th of april last. Ms McDonald met with a number of groups including We x f o r d C h a m b e r o f Commerce, Family Carers Ireland, The Collective Sensory

Group and childcare workers. She said; "Wexford is brimming with talent, brimming with ambition, brimming with potential. "Unfortunately the county has been badly let down by bad regional development policies from this government and previous administrations. "The business community is clearly not getting the sup-

County Archivist Grainne Doran, Aidan Ryan, Town Manager Liz Hore, Chairman of Enniscorthy District Council Keith Doyle, Chamber President Maree Lyng and Liam Doyle at the opening of Enniscorthy Industries Exhibition at the Castle. Pic: Maria Nolan.

Aidan also talked fondly of carriage maker extraordinaire Colm Breen, recounting several amusing tales about the well known and extremely talented Enniscorthy character, many involving the drinking establishment known as Stamps. Aidan concluded saying that it was inspiring to see the Exhibition at Enniscorthy Castle bringing Enniscorthy`s indus-

trial past back to life and he hoped that in time another element would be added to the Castle collections – the Eileen Gray Exhibition presently housed at Collins Barracks, Dublin. Liz Hore brought proceedings to a conclusion thanking Aidan for his tremendous knowledge and understanding of the town and its people and

port it needs from government. "Due to lack of business support infrastructure, Wexford has lost out on investment and badly needed jobs from a number of companies that had shown an enthusiasm to locate in the area. "The quality of the broadband network is a huge part of the problem. It is clear to me that this will only be solved through state intervention. "It is shocking that Rosslare Port is not included in the Ireland 2040 plan. It requires significant investment to become the economic driver it could and should be for the South East. "Rosslare is not just a local asset. It is a national asset, especially in the context of Brexit. "The proper development of the N11 is also critical to this. Speaking about her engagements with the groups she met in Wexford, Ms McDonald said; "It is clear that the community and voluntary sector in Wexford does amazing work despite a chronic lack of government support." n

Keeping it in the family!

Over 1,200 social houses for Co. Wexford new figures obtained by Minister Paul Kehoe detail the Government’s plans to address the housing crisis in Co. Wexford between 2018 and 2021. in total, over 40,000 social houses are to be delivered nationwide with some 1,222 planned for Wexford over the next three years. In the short term, Minister Kehoe has established that almost 100 social houses are to be delivered in Enniscorthy in the coming months. The Fine Gael TD has received confir-

mation that the Dept of Housing will shortly sign off on the delivery of 52 units at Greenville Lane. The units are being delivered through a co-operative. Separately, Minister Kehoe has been informed by Wexford County Council that 46 social units will be rolled out in the Moyne area of Enniscorthy. Delivery is expected next year. Minister Kehoe has been in contact with Wexford County Council housing officer Padraig O’Gorman who is spearheading these projects.

While accepting that many people on the housing list are feeling great frustration, Minister Kehoe pledged to put pressure on Housing Minister Eoghan Murphy to ensure projects earmarked for Wexford do not face delays. The Government insists its housing plan, Rebuilding Ireland, is accelerating all types of housing supply – social, private and rental. The aim is to increase overall annual housing output to over 25,000 homes per annum by 2020. n

€10m SICAP funding for Wexford’s disadvantaged an ambitious countywide project to tackle poverty, social exclusion and long-term unemployment in Co. Wexford reached a major milestone on 26th March last when the 2018– 2022 siCaP contract was signed between Wexford County Council, Wexford local Community development Committee (lCdC) and Wexford local development at County hall, Wexford. The Social Inclusion and Community Activation Programme (SICAP) of €10m will see public sector agencies work in partnership with disadvantaged individuals and community organisations to strengthen communities and improve people’s lives through targeted and innovative, locallyled approaches. Target groups include children and families from disadvantaged areas, lone parents, new communities (including refugees and asylum seekers)

and people living in disadvantaged communities. The Programme is also aimed at the unemployed (including those not on the Live Register), low income workers/households, young unemployed people from disadvantaged areas and young people aged 15-24 who are not in employment, education or training. People with disabilities are also targeted for support, while prog r a m m e s a n d p ro j e c t s supporting minority groups such as Roma and Travellers are also included. Speaking at the contract s i g n i n g M i c h a e l Wa l l , Chairperson of WLD, said that WLD will bring its wealth of experience of working in the community to bear in building on the success of the previous SICAP programme and is looking forward to working with the LCDC in supporting disadvantaged communities in Co. Wexford. n

Paddy Gordon was born 21 December 1943. His mother died a few days after, leaving Paddy and his six siblings to be reared by their grandmother Johanna Jordan. He adored his grandmother very much and in return for all she had done, Paddy looked after her and cared for her. Paddy met his wife Elsie in the early 1960s, at a dance in the Athenaeum. He then followed her to London, where she was working as a chambermaid. They married 13 July 1963 and returned to live in Ireland in 1965. Paddy got a job at Davis's Mill and worked there for many years. Paddy enjoyed his sports and participated in many such as hurling, football and later in life, handball. He had a great interest in greyhounds,

at a meeting held on the 17th april, the members of the Enniscorthy st. Patrick’s day Parade Committee, expressed appreciation of the support for the Parade received from many organisation and individuals. it was admitted that the dire weather forecasts and the cold day that it was had an impact on the numbers participating and on the number of attendees. It is difficult to determine if the changing of the time of the Parade to facilitate people interested in watching the international rugby match had any great effect on the numbers attending. Apparently, parades held in the forenoon of St. Patrick’s Day were also down in numbers. The Committee expressed

politics and that the group should use it to its full advantage. Cllr Tony Dempsey spoke on how young people can be the leaders of change. The newly elected officers are Andrew Bolger Chair/PRO, ViceChair John Kehoe, Sec. Tom Sullivan, Treasurers Patrick Higgins & Cian Sullivan, Membership officer Sean Brady, Youth Officer John Higgins. It allows parishioners to download a daily reflection and the Mass readings, to keep up to date with Church developments at national and international levels and make requests for prayers at times of need and volunteer for service directly.’ Fr. Carroll said that ‘the APP is a small sign of how belief and religion are embracing new technology and the family that is church is connecting in ever new ways - it’s a case of CATHOLIC. COMMUNITY. Wexford Light Opera Society (affiliated to A.I.M.S.) is proudly presenting Sweeney Todd (The Demon Barber of Fleet Street) a musical thriller by Stephen Sondheim, in association with Cut n Shave Barbers of Wexford, for six nights from Monday the 30th April to Saturday the 5th May nightly at 8pm. Months of intensive rehearsals have gone into this production which is currently playing to full houses and standing ovations in the National Opera House, Wexford, and has four more night to run. The show boasts a fabulous cast and chorus: Sweeney Todd – Tony Carty. Mrs. Lovett – Catherine Walsh. Anthony Hope – Brendan Long. Joanna – Ciara Cullinane. Judge Turpin – John Crosbie.

Tobias – Michael O’Gorman. Beadle Bamford – Mick Farrell. Beggar Woman – Antonia Close. Pirelli – George Lawlor. Fogg – Pat Lawlor. The story revolves around the evil Judge Turpin who lusts for the beautiful wife of a London barber and transports him to Australia for a crime he did not commit. Returning after 15 years and calling himself Sweeney Todd, the barber vows revenge, applying his razor to unlucky customers and shuttling the bodies down to Mrs. Lovett, who uses them in her meat-pie shop. Though many fall to his blade, he will not be satisfied until he slits Turpin's throat. The show has won many Tony and West End Theatre Awards and was made into an Oscar-winning movie a few

years ago starring Johnny Depp as Sweeney Todd. Magical moments at St. Mary’s Enniscorthy Lions Club, established in 1985, has organised a plethora of excellent events over the years, raising the princely sum of €350,000 for worthy causes in and around Enniscorthy town and district, current Club President Eric Barron announced to a packed St. Mary’s on Sunday evening 8th April at a special concert, the proceeds from which go to the restoration of St. Mary’s Church organ. The organ is a significant and valued piece of Enniscorthy history built by William Gray, London, in 1815 and was once housed in Dublin Castle. It was installed in St. Mary`s in the late 1800`s and is now sadly in n e e d o f re f u r b i s h m e n t . According to Rev. Nicola Halford of St. Mary’s, ‘Hymn singing is an important aspect of worship in this church and this beautiful and historic instrument contributes enormously to that. I would like to take this opportunity to thank the Lions Club and all the wonderful per-

formers here tonight for giving of their amazing talents free of charge so that our beautiful organ can receive the tender loving care that it now so badly needs and deserves.’ MC for the evening, that distinguished voice of Enniscorthy, Mr. Jimmy Gahan, welcomed Bishop Brennan, Minister Paul Kehoe, James Browne TD, Chairman of Enniscorthy Municipal District Council Keith Doyle, Town Manager Liz Hore and President of Enniscorthy Chamber Marie Lyng, before calling on the young and talented Ciara Cullinane to begin proceedings with Somewhere Over the Rainbow and that beautifully moving piece I Love Him. Ciara sang with a force and confidence that belied her nineteen years and is definitely going to be a talent to watch for as she matures and develops. Father and daughter combination Colm and Maire O`Tiarnaigh delighted the St. Mary’s audience appropriately

enough with numbers from the Cill Mhuire Suite and the Brendan Voyage which were simultaneously relaxing and stirring. Angels then appeared on stage in the guise of the Kinsella sisters, Clodagh and Stephanie, of seraphic form and heavenly vocals they delivered breathtaking arias and the most delicious rendition of one of my special favourites The Last Rose of Summer. Then it was over to the Castlebridge Choir under the talented tutelage of Anita Mahon giving us a delightful and lively mix of Beatle mania and African rumba. This was their first performance in Enniscorthy and as Jimmy Gahan commented, ‘Judging from the reaction of the audience it certainly won`t be their last.’ Slaney Strings opened the second period of the evening with beautiful, melodious, soothing and captivating combinations of violins and cellos that were followed by a delec-

table duet from Eric Hayes and Lorna Mahon of that most moving Phantom of the Opera number All I Ask of You. Lorna then went on to astound us with her magnificent talent singing Don’t Cry for Me

Argentina and Time to Say Goodbye and George Lawlor brought the house down with a robust rendition of the Wexford Anthem Boolavogue and the more gentle but equally poignant Cu Chulainn’s Son.

An evening of exquisite Enniscorthy entertainment drew to conclusion with the entire audience launching into that robust favourite The Holy City with gusto. – Maria Nolan

Are You Welcome once again to all things past and present on the social dance scene in the south east. Ta k e n o t e t h a t B o b b y Jackman is back again in The Rising Sun Mullinavat with his Monday night social dance and the dance in Bellefield has now moved to the IFA Centre. There is a new dance started in Foulksmills in The Oaktree on Sunday nights and this month they have Dave Lawlor/Jason Travers/Tom Healy/Shaun Loughrey. We wish them the best of luck. It was with great sadness that we lost the father of all country music and dances last month, Big Tom McBride. He opened the famous Un-Yoke in 1980 and closed the Galtee Mor in 2008. He packed the marquee so much at the ploughing championships in Rosegarland Wellingtonbridge in 1973 that the sides had to be taken down to accommodate the massive crowd that turned up to see him. He played in numerous marquees around the county with his band The Mainliners and later The Travellers. "Gentle Mother" was his signature song and the song that catapulted him to fame. A fame he found hard to adjust to, and indeed could never understand for a long time why so many people turned up to hear him sing. It was in London where I saw Big Tom in the Galtee Mor. He was absolutely loved to bits by all us emigrants and would nearly have us all heading for the ferry by the time he was finished. It was in London where he heard the song Gentle Mother sang by two emigrant brothers who only knew half the song, but Big Tom persisted at them so much for the full version that they wrote home to their sister in Ireland who then sent it over to them. The two main things that Big Tom did-

n't like doing was concerts and flying. When he had to take a trip to America, he went by boat, and he couldn't bear playing to an audience who were sitting down. He was a humble, home loving countryman who just loved playing and singing to people who got up on the floor and danced to his music and songs, and that's why he holds a special place in my heart. Also in April, the great Bob Ormsby whose band The All Stars played for social dances since the 60's, passed away peacefully in Rosslare. Bob gave a lot of local musicians work around here down through the years and is credited with popularising the Taxi Dance. This

is where the women queue up on one side of the dance floor, and the men on the other side. They meet in front of the band and dance one round of the floor, the woman then being dropped off and the end of her queue, (often with a twirl!) and the man rejoining his queue, to eventually reach the top of the queue again and dance with a different woman (not always!) The women to the right and the men to the left, facing the band is how Bob Ormsby had it, but here lies a bone of contention as in Carlow, Laois and other counties they queue the opposite way and each party insisting their way is the best way! You also have the likely lads with the roving eyes tak-

ing certain ladies around twice, much to the the discontent of the ladies waiting in the queue. And then there's the lads who are cunningly counting and calculating to see who they are going to end up with and bending down to pretend to tie their shoelaces so as to heighten their chances of getting the dolly bird! Oh there's a lot more to the taxi dance than meets the eye you know! Fri 4th May; Askamore Community Hall has John Flood. Camross Ballroom has Michael Collins. GREAT LINE-UP OF ENTERTAINMENT FOR THE 2018 STRAWBERRY FAIR Carmel Harrington, the renowned international novelist, will open the 51st Strawberry Fair/Street Rhythms and Roots Festival in Enniscorthy on June 1st, the organising committee confirmed this week. Ms. Harrington is the latest in a long line of well known politicians and celebrities to have opened the Fair since its inception in 1967 and her pending appearance on the bandstand in the Market Square is certain to attract a very large crowd. The author of six best-selling novels to date, Carmel is well known to TV audiences both at home and abroad and regularly appears on TV3’s

‘Midday Show’. Her books, all regular chart-toppers, have captured the hearts of readers worldwide and have been translated into eight languages to date. Her latest offering “A Thousand Roads Home” is due for release in October and pre publicity strongly suggests it will be another best-seller. Plans for the 51st Strawberry Fair/Street Rhythms and Roots Festival are now at an advanced stage. The appearance of the Garda Band and the Army No. 1 Band are particular highlights of the programme, while the visit of Willie Daly, the internationally renowned match maker from Lisdoonvarna, is certain to create no end of excitement. He will

be making his first appearance at the Fair and will be ‘plying his trade’ at an afternoon tea dance in The Athenaeum Hall on Sunday, June 3rd. Music will play a major part in this year’s Fair with the Roots element hosting upwards of 30 gigs at venues throughout the town over the three days of the festival. This is in addition to live music every day, evening and night in the Market Square where the Bob Marley Tribute Band “Natty Wailer” will bring an international dimension to this year’s Fair when they appear on the bandstand on Sunday night, June 3rd. Other top musical attractions include ‘The Gentlemen Callers’, ‘The

Remedy Club’, ‘Raglan Rodeo’, ‘Two Time Polka’ and ‘JMA’. The Street Rhythms offering this year is even better than last year in that it is more creative and imaginative and full of fun for all the family to enjoy. As part of their programme, the Martina Leacy Dance Academy will link up with St. Patrick’s Special School for an exhibition of ballroom dancing on Friday night, June 1st, while on Saturday, June 2nd, their day-long programme of entertainment will commence at 11.30am and continue right through to 5pm with many new innovations and the return of some old favourites including ‘The Wonderful Corvenios’ an incredibly talented magi-

cian of note. On Sunday, June 3rd, the Street Rhythms programme will extend from The Market Square to Castle Street and Enniscorthy Castle where there will be something for all age groups to enjoy. The 2018 Strawberry Queen will be crowned on the closing night of the Fair with the Strawberry Princesses having been interviewed the previous night by Liam Sharkey and Willie Daly on the bandstand in the Market Square. They will be guests at the Strawberry Ball in The Riverside Park Hotel on Thursday night, May 31st, when all 12 ‘Princesses’ will make their debut before what is anticipated will be a sellout crowd.

Who’ll be crowned Strawberry Queen for 2018?

All in all, the 2018 Strawberry Fair/Street Rhythms and Roots Festival promises to be an event not to be missed and if favoured by fine weather, Enniscorthy should really rock to the sound of music, song and dance over the June Bank Holiday. n

As the innocent along with the guilty suffer the stings of innuendo and the lashes of sharp tongues, a hilarious tale of crime and its consequences unfolds. A comic drama by Paddy Murray, full of sharp Dublin wit, this story of Larry, the cash, the camper van and the deceased husband are all performed with ease by acclaimed actress, Mary Murray (Love/Hate).

Rathnure Summer Musical! Summer is (allegedly!!!) on the way and that can only mean one thing: The Rathnure Panto Society Summer Musical is back. Since Torn Dreams in 2010, the group have continued their run of original Musicals, taking hits from across the decades and producing unforgettable stories to these soundtracks. Now with their 9th Musical, it’s time to go back to the Awesome 80's with Uptown Girl: The Musical! It tells the story of two girls, Rita, a poor hardworking shoemaker struggling to raise her family after their parents passed away. Carol, a rich, sophisticated girl who becomes a World Irish Dancing Champion. And a young local garage boy Mickey who they both fall for. As their paths cross during the difficult recession, each character, with the help of a 1980's soundtrack, has to rise above it. So if you rocked to Sweet Child of Mine, felt crestfallen on a Manic Monday, or cheesed it out with Sister Sledge and Frankie, then this is the show for you. The show runs for 6 nights: June 15th, 17th, 20th, 21st, 22nd and 24th at 7.45pm nightly. Call the Box Office on 087-0687801 or 0876790354. You can also find more information on our Facebook page.

Major conference to highlight Vinegar Hill Battlefield findings WHaT lIeS BeNeaTH..... The results of recent surveys on the Vinegar Hill Battlefield. The Riverside Park Hotel, Enniscorthy was the rather curious venue for the 60th A n n i v e r s a r y o f t h e F r. Murphy’s Hurling & Football Club, London, on Saturday 31st March. Formed in 1958 to keep exiled Wexford men in touch with their roots, the Club is still very much the first point of

contact for Wexford people in London providing them with excellent assistance to locate and secure work and accommodation as well as the opportunity to play regular competitive games of hurling and football. Over 300 attended the gala event at the Riverside along with County Chairman Derek

Kent, County PRO PJ Howlin, Chairman of Enniscorthy Municipal District Council Keith Doyle, who made a p r e s e n t a t i o n t o t h e F r. Murphy’s on behalf of the Council, Minister Paul Kehoe, Michael D’Arcy TD, Councillors Barbara Ann Murphy, Larry Byrne, County Engineer Eamonn Hore and

a plethora of former Fr. Murphy players now residing in Wexford, indeed one or two former players even flew in from the States for the occasion, a marvellous endorsement of the Club and the esteem in it which it is held by former players. TV presenter and guest speaker Dermot O`Leary was

unable to attend due to other commitments but his parents Sean and Maria were among those present. The newly refurbished Riverside Park Hotel function room looked resplendent in purple and gold balloons and crowned with a purple and gold ceiling and a great night was had by all and cap-

tured by London PRO and Chair of London Ladies Football Lucia Butler for the London sports pages. Thank you for choosing Enniscorthy for your 60th birthday and we hope that all of the visiting Fr. Murphy`s had a wonderful time here and will return to us soon. – Maria Nolan

Remembering our Easter dead We have been remembering our Easter dead for a very long time in Enniscorthy, indeed long before the 100th Anniversary of the 1916 Rising our Easter Monday commemorations were an annual event. This year’s commemorations began with Mass at St. Aidan`s Cathedral, celebrated by Fr. Billy Swan who remarked that as long as he lives he will never forget the wonderful events of 2016. This is the 4th Commemoration Mass celebrated by Fr. Swan for all who took part in the 1916 Rising in Enniscorthy and he had a special mention for Fr. Joseph Malin, son of

Pic: Maria Nolan.

1916 leader Michael Malin, who passed to his eternal reward on Easter Sunday, saying ‘Coincidence or not I can see the hand of God in the passing of the last surviving child of a 1916 leader on Easter Sunday.’ Prayers were read by Town Manager Liz Hore and Chairman of Enniscorthy Municipal District Council Keith Doyle, with Prayers of the Faithful from Paddy Murphy and Martin Whelan, music and singing beautifully performed by Niamh Crowhurst and PJ O`Connor with dancers from the O`Connor School of Dancing and the Army Colour party bearing the Tricolour to the

altar for the Consecration. A parade to Market Square followed Mass where Chairman Keith Doyle gave a brief account of Enniscorthy 1916, followed by the Proclamation read eloquently by Principal of Enniscorthy Gaelscoil Judy H e ff e r n a n , a n d t h e n t h e poignant Last Post by bugler Anthony Cronin and Amhran na bhFiann by the Ballindaggin Pipe Band. In torrential rain a wreath was laid by Chairman Keith Doyle and Minister Paul Kehoe at the Market Square Monument and the marching party of Enniscorthy Historical Re-enactment Society and Army Colour

party along with dignitaries including James Browne TD, Councillors Johnny Mythen and John O`Rourke, former TD John Browne, Director of Services John Carley and descendants of the Enniscorthy Volunteers continued to Abbey Square where wreaths were laid at the Seamus Rafter Monument and the Patriot Flag. Well done to the faithful who once again turned out in extremely unfavourable weather conditions to remember those who went before us and celebrate their enormous contribution to the Enniscorthy we know and love today. – Maria Nolan

Slaney Foods to enter the Chinese market Minister Paul Kehoe has welcomed the inclusion of Slaney Foods International in the announcement from the Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine, Michael Creed TD, of the opening of the Chinese beef market to exports from Ireland. The Minster said: “Slaney Foods International, based in Clohamon, Bunclody, is a large employer in Wexford and the opening of this new market will present an excellent opportunity for this sector, from farmers through to processors. Opening and developing new markets is a vital part of the response required to the uncertainties arising from Brexit. ”This decision also represents a powerful endorsement of Slaney Foods International and indeed Ireland’s high standards by the Chinese Administration, for

which food safety is a prerequisite for trade.” “There has been a huge e ff o r t b y Te a m I re l a n d ; Ministers, Departmental and agency officials as well as the food industry and farmers over several years to get beef market access to China over the line. Our agri-food exports to China have increased roughly five-fold from around €200 million in 2010 to nearly €1 billion last year. This has been a remarkable achievement and underlines the importance of the Chinese market. The Minister said: “I firmly believe that our beef industry can and will compete effectively in the Chinese market and I look forward to the opportunities that this access will bring to both Slaney Foods International and all in the sector in Wexford and beyond.” n

Big improvement in jobless numbers

The number of people signing on the Live Register in Wexford has dropped by 12% in the last year, according to figures realeased early last month. There are now 10,614 people signing on in the county – compared to 12,032 this time last year. Nationally, unemployment in Ireland has fallen steadily from a peak of 16% in 2012 to 6%. When compared with this time last year, there are now 20,000 more people back to work. Welcoming the figures, Minister with responsibility for Defence Paul Kehoe said: “It

is very positive to see that the number of people signing on the Live Register in Wexford has reduced by 12% in the last year. This equates to 1,418 more people back in work. “Unemployment was arguably the worst consequence of our economic crisis as it caused terrible financial and personal stress in households across the country. Driving down unemployment is part of our overall goal to support families and strengthen communities’ right across the country.” Minister Kehoe said while the figures are welcome, he

wants to see a further drop in the number of unemployed people in the coming months. “We are working hard to ensure that the economic recovery is felt across every region. Despite what the Opposition would have you believe, four out of every five jobs created in the past year were outside of Dublin. And these are not just in the commuter belt, with seven out of every 10 jobs created outside of Dublin, Kildare, Meath and Wicklow. In fact unemployment has decreased in every region of the country since the current Government was formed in early 2016. n

Credit Guarantee Scheme Wexford businesses should consider availing of the Government’s Credit Guarantee Scheme after a new report detailed its effectiveness in job creation. Minister Paul Kehoe welcomed the latest report on the scheme for SMEs, which covers Quarter 4 of 2017. He also encouraged businesses in Wexford seeking finance to consider whether the Scheme might be for them. Minister Kehoe: “I warmly welcome this report on the Credit Guarantee Scheme for Irish SMEs, which tells us once again that the Scheme is working.

“The Scheme is a Government initiative that was set up to encourage additional lending to SMEs which, under normal lending criteria, are not able to access new or additional facilities from their bank. “In Quarter 4 of 2017, loans were agreed with 28 SMEs, for a total of over €4.9 million in funding. According to the report, this finance will create or maintain 125 jobs. “Since we started the Credit Guarantee Scheme October 2012, 530 loans worth €84.4 million have been granted. Overall, 3,290 jobs have been created or maintained in the lifetime of

the Scheme. “I am very pleased to see that the Scheme continues to support SMEs in every region, and across 16 sectors of the economy. “I would encourage SMEs in Wexford seeking finance to consider whether the Credit Guarantee Scheme is the right option for them to grow their business. “The Scheme is operated for the Government by the Strategic Banking Corporation of Ireland, so any local businesses interested in finding out m o re should visit www.sbci.gov.ie.” n

Rosslare Europort on the agenda Minister with responsibility for Defence, Paul Kehoe, hosted a recent visit to Wexford by his Cabinet colleague, Transport Minister Shane Ross. The two ministers first met the Chief Executive of Wexford County Council, Tom Enright, during which the impact of Storm Emma on the road network was discussed. Minister Kehoe said Wexford was worst hit by the storm and that there was a deterioration in roads as a result. The future of Rosslare Europort and the potential to develop Waterford Airport was also on the agenda. The ministers travelled to the port where they were briefed by general manager Glenn Carr and chairman Frank Allen on the challenges and opportunities posed by Brexit. And the ministers also met local business people who have a business relationship with the port. Speaking after the visit, Minister Kehoe said he intends to follow up with Minister Ross in relation to the the transport issues in Wexford.

Minister Paul Kehoe, Anne Carthy, Minister Shane Ross and Cllr.Ger Carthy in Ladies Island Community Centre.

“It was extremely useful for Minister Ross to visit the constituency so that he can hear first hand our desire to bring more investment to Wexford,” Minister Kehoe said. In relation to the Rosslare Europort, Minister Kehoe said it is vital that all measures are taken to ensure the port is Brexit-proofed. “The meeting involving Minister Ross was focused on how we can work with all the relevant stakeholders to develop the port effectively.

“Brexit has thrown up new challenges that will require joined up thinking from all parties involved. Minister Kehoe said Rosslare Europort will now undergo a strategic review, adding that it plays a crucial role in maintaining links with EU markets. It was noted that Project Ireland 2040 promises to improve connectivity to Rosslare Europort and to complete the development of the N11 from Oilgate to Rosslare. n

Earth 2 Heaven

This issue, Joe Kavanagh welcomes the month of May and also welcomes some less invasive therapies. Well May has arrived and brought some sunshine with it. I often think it’s the most magical month of the year. The leaves are coming out on all the various deciduous trees, there's a vibrant green to the whole countryside although we were a long time waiting for it this year!.... well we'll appreciate it all the more now that it is finally arriving. Everything seems to have a bit more life to it this time of year, lambs jumping and playing in the fields. Just coming up the road this evening seeing cows and calves out in the fields lying off as content as anything... finally made it through probably the longest winter in living memory. On the small animal side of the practice there have been some interesting cases in recently. One client brought in their 8-year-old Lab, Jess, with cruciate ligament damage. They were reluctant to have her operated on and asked about alternatives... We spoke to them about using the kinesiology to help with her alignment and give her a course of cartrophen too and they decided to run with it. She arrived back in for her last injection on Friday and was almost back to full weight-bearing on the leg and in great form. Conventionally these cases would require surgery almost every time but exploring new, less invasive avenues is what we're about to get the animal back on track as quickly as possible. Each case is different and it depends on the individual animal and how they respond, but it’s great to be able to offer a possible alternative to surgery… and if it doesn't work there's still the option to use the surgery too. There is a Veterinary lecturer in the U.S. who does voluntary work in a poor area of his city and who has used homeopathy and alternative therapies in similar instances and has achieved very good results too... so it’s good to see that the profession is opening up to embracing new ways of working for the betterment of our truly magical fourlegged companions. Enjoy the magic of May. n

A local contributor looks at life today in Enniscorthy and beyond miLLRAce HoteL buncLody As this column is being written the future of the Millrace Hotel in Bunclody is in some doubt. The local community is up in arms at the rumour that the hotel has been or is about to be disposed of and closed down. The rumour mill, which may be incorrect, indicates that this much-needed facility will disappear in the near future. This would be a disaster for the town of Bunclody. Local businesses and local people benefit enormously from this hotel. Local jobs are at stake not only directly in the hotel but in many of the businesses which will suffer if the Millrace closes. The story doing the rounds is that the building will be converted into a nursing home. While, in itself, such a development would not be undesirable, it has to be recognised that for the town it would be a huge economic blow. Local politicians, led by Barbara-Anne Murphy and supported by her colleagues on the Enniscorthy Municipal District Council, have made it clear that they will strongly object to any change of use for this building. By the time you read this, local public meetings will also have taken place at which, I assume,

strong opposition to any proposed change of use and loss of the hotel, and all that goes with it, will be voiced. Hopefully common sense will prevail and whatever needs to be done to retain the hotel will be done and Bunclody will continue to recover from the recent recession and indeed go on to prosper. Pensions Once again, we return to the question of the contributory state pension, which for many people who had worked hard all their lives, was slashed by Joan Burton when she was Minister for Social Protection. In a recent interview Ms. Burton refused to apologise for cutting the pensions and in fact stated that in her view it was the correct thing to do. As we know, a campaign to reverse the cuts was launched by Councillor Michael Sheehan of New Ross which involved the holding of public meetings across the county and his gathering of as much information as possible from individuals affected by the cuts, which in some cases amounted to a savage 30% reduction. He also put strong pressure on the current Minister, Regina Doherty, on the issue and used every available platform to espouse the cause of reversing the

And sPeAking of Pensions and the like isn’t it maddening to see these bankers again talking about bonuses because they reckon that they are worth it. Also, to see that a minister has to serve only two years to qualify for a pension while, even under the new proposed scheme, the rest of us have to work for 40 years.

View from the Hill cuts. The campaign was subsequently taken up across other counties and eventually the pressure on the government became unbearable and they had to act. In the last few days Regina Doherty has announced a change in the system of assessment for the contributory pension. This system will give credit to those who had to leave the workforce for family reasons and ensure, we are told, that no person will be disadvantaged. As usual the devil will be in the detail. People currently affected will not know how they are going to fare until their pensions are reviewed later this year. Any monies owed will

be backdated to March 30th 2018 and any increases due will be paid in the first three months of 2019. In the meantime, I am reliably informed that Sheehan is not giving up his campaign for fair pensions. He will, I believe, hold further public meetings during the next few months to explain whatever details of this reversal are available and to ensure that no backsliding occurs. As a footnote I think that it is ironic that a left-wing Labour minister introduced the cuts and a right-wing Fine Gael minister is trying to reverse them. Just saying.

RefeRendum This column has decided not to take any particular position with regard to the forthcoming referendum on the question of the Eight Amendment. Reason being is that this is a deeply personal matter for people. I will comment, though, on the viciousness of the debate being carried out on social media. There are obnoxious people on both sides of this debate who, quite honestly, should not be allowed out in public. Furthermore, I tend to agree with those who say that some, not all, of the posters are objectionable. As to the outcome, I predict that this will be a lot closer than anyone thinks. Lobbying of ministeRs The recent uproar over Minister Denis Naughten taking a direct phone call from a lobbyist demonstrates that, as we all knew any-

way, it’s not what you know in this country but who you know. The fact that certain people can have this access on matters of crucial importance is simply scandalous. How many times over the years have we seen local councillors, who are elected to represent us, attempting to get meeting with ministers to discuss issues such as housing and other vital infrastructure only to be told that the minister is too busy. And yet lobbyists who represent economic interests simply have to make a phone call. There is of course a place for lobbyists. That is provided that they, and the ministers they are lobbying, stick to the rules which means entering details of the discussions on the lobbying register. When this register was introduced we were told that this was the be all and end all of a system which would wipe out any potential corruption. But it doesn’t, simply because there is no obligation on the individual being lobbied to record anything. In other words, anyone can tackle a minister about anything and if they say nothing about it then the minister won’t either. But isn’t that just the usual in this country. n We are often asked: Who is the “View from the Hill” columnist? All we can say is that the author’s surname is NOT Doyle!

caroline gets motoring review by Caroline Kidd

mercedes-benz c-class

mercedes-benz has been enjoying something of a renaissance and boost in popularity in ireland in the past couple of years. buoyed by some excellent new product like the eclass and an aggressive market strategy that has seen a reduction in price and more equipment, mercedes-benz is bringing a tough challenge to competitors. The Mercedes-Benz CClass is the brand’s evergreen mid-size executive

saloon but it’s looking better than ever. I recently took the C200d model for a test drive. The Mercedes-Benz C-Class has an extensive engine line-up of petrol, diesel and even hybrid in the form of the C350e. Under the bonnet of the C200d there is a 1.6-litre diesel with 136hp. The 8speed automatic ‘Avantgarde’ model I was driving has a list price of €42,715, but there was no sense of ordinariness about this car. Mercedes-Benz

Ireland offers the option of adding a sporty ‘AMG’ Line look to an already well-equipped Avantgarde model for about €1,100. My test car also had 19” AMG multispoke alloy wheels adding a further €1,279. The Mercedes-Benz CClass has a neat saloon profile and is a very cohesive member of the Mercedes family in terms of design. Inside, there is one of the best interiors in this premium segment against the

likes of the BMW 3 Series, Jaguar XE and even the Audi A4. The ‘silk beige’ interior with black detail is very classy and the material quality is good everywhere. Avantgarde models are well equipped including leather upholstery, 17” alloys, leather multifunction steering wheel, heated front seats, keyless go and LED headlamps. Space is good for the size of car with two large footwells for rear passengers. Like other rear

wheel drive rivals, the middle passenger will have to tackle a large transmission tunnel. Still the cabin of the C-Class is a lovely place to spend time in. The boot is a competitive 480 litres and the boot lid lifts electronically from the key or a switch in the cabin. The infotainment system includes navigation but if I’m to be picky, the graphics are a little oldfashioned. But you get used to scrolling through menus from the rotary controller on the centre console after some time. The Mercedes-Benz CClass range kicks off at €35,225 with diesels available from €37,570. My C200d with a 1.6-litre diesel engine and 136hp doesn’t sound like a match for a large saloon like the C-Class on paper, but it has plenty of power on the road while returning good economy. There is some diesel engine noise at idle but it fades into the background once cruising. There is also the opportunity to switch between driving modes like Comfort, Sport and Sport +. The Sport mode adds more urgency

to the throttle response, so the C200d does not ever feel at a loss for power. The Mercedes-Benz C-Class is a fine car to drive with sharp steering, agile handling and good refinement. The large 19” wheels did make for a harder ride over mixed road surfaces so stick with the standard wheel size for more comfort. The Mercedes-Benz CClass has evolved into a mighty competitor in its segment, with one of the best premium, contemporary interiors and sharp driving dynamics. Mercedes-Benz Ireland’s pricing and equipment strategy makes it difficult to ignore in its segment so there’s never been a better time to check out the CClass. model tested: Mercedes-Benz C200d Automatic Price: €42,715 (Range from €35,225) Engine: 1.6-litre turbo diesel Power: 136hp Torque: 320Nm 0-100km/h: 10.2 seconds Top speed: 216km/h Economy: 4.2-4.6l/100km CO2 emissions: 119g/km Motor tax: €200 per year n

IN PRAISE OF TRAVEL AGENTS!

some weeks ago while ireland shivered, shuddered and shook in the wake of storm emma under several feet of snow, we were in seville and, while not quite basking in sunshine, we at least were able to get around with ease and enjoy reasonably mild weather if a tad on the damp side. When booking the trip with local travel agent, Mackin Travel, Enniscorthy, just before Christmas, I considered myself lucky to get a four-day trip to Seville – flights and accommodation in The Derby Hotel in the exact centre of Seville for €280 per person – but I never

envisaged quite how lucky it would turn out to be. Seville, the Queen of Andalucia, a title that rests easily and aptly on this most beautiful and magnificent city of light, blue skies, orange blossom and flamenco, was all that I expected it to be. Her beauty is regal, her history varied and vibrant, her people colourful and helpful, her shops classy and reasonable, her cafes and restaurants plentiful and pleasant, her food varied and wholesome and her wines full bodied and most flavorsome. Maria in Seville.

There is so much to do and see with a lot of the city`s attractions in the historic centre which houses the Royal Palace, the Alcazar, the official residence of the Royal family, Seville`s mammoth and magnificent cathedral, St. Elmo’s Palace, official residence of the President of Andalucia, the Basilica of the Macerena, the ancient and lively Triana Quarter, the actual quay where Majellan set out on his journey around the world and the Monastery where Christopher Columbus prepared for his second voyage to the New World. One of my quests was to find

the great explorer’s final resting place in Seville’s Golden Cathedral. Almost everything glitters here and much of the wealth coming from the new world was responsible for this most ornate and glistening edifice so it is only fitting that it should now preserve the memory of Columbus, the man who made it all possible, as thousands flock to his tomb each year to pay their respects. It was a wish fulfilled for me and at his sepulchre I got a sense of being in the presence of greatness. But ah, the Grand Cathedral although magnificent is a bit too gold and gilded for my tastes I never find God in these grandiose, ostentatious places – only men. We take the opportunity to climb the Giralda – the great tower and are rewarded with fantastic views out over this most exquisite and ancient city with its glorious past. We also availed of the chance to visit the famed Italica, just outside Seville which was founded in 206 BC by Roman General Publicus Cornelius Scipio and was the birthplace of no less than 3 Roman Emperors – Trajan, Hadrian and Theodosius. Italica is one of the oldest Roman settlements in Spain and well worth a visit and is free admission to all European citizens. Italica`s Amphitheatre was once the third largest in the Roman Empire, seating 25,000 when the population of the city at the time was approximately 8,000. On our third day in Seville we decide to take a day trip and head to the coastal city of Cadiz. 10 minutes in a taxi from our

hotel to Seville`s massive train station costs all of €5 for four of us and the all round trip to Cadiz is €33 each and takes approximately 1 hour and 40 minutes each way, giving us the opportunity to see some of the Spanish countryside and this lovely city founded by Phoenician sailors around 45BC and quickly became the metropolis of the, then known, world and later still it became the third most important city of the Holy Roman Empire. On day four, instead of heading back to Dublin we are headed to Córdoba thanks to Storm Emma. Ryanair flight FR 7147 has been cancelled due to inclement weather conditions closing Dublin airport. So instead of sitting in a drafty, crowded airport waiting to get a flight to Dublin, we were contacted by our most accommodating travel agent, Mackin Travel, and the very pleasant and extremely helpful Marie who tried, under extreme circumstances to get us a flight home through Seville, Malaga and Faro, only to discover that all flights were fully booked. Luckily for us, Seville’s excellent transport system services a great deal of the country and we are able to go by train to Madrid where the very efficient Marie got us seats on a flight to Dublin on Monday 5th at 5.30pm at no cost, I mean how good is that! And our lovely hotel, The Derby, is able to provide us with 2 extra nights accommodation at the very reasonable rate of €80 per room per night. And could I also say that our hotel and its friendly personnel could not have been more helpful. They printed off

Frank Mackin of Mackin Travel

the train times to all of the above airports for us should we manage to get a flight out of any of them. How incredibly simple and hassle free it has all been due to the fact that we had a travel agent, otherwise we would be sitting miserable in an airport waiting for a cancellation, or for Ryanair to fly us into another airport where we could pick up a connection to Dublin. Not for me I’m afraid, I don’t do hardship terribly well and thanks to Mackin Travel I didn’t have to. I cannot speak highly enough of them nor compliment and praise the marvellous customer service afforded us by Mackin’s and in particular by Marie who couldn’t have been more helpful whilst under severe weather conditions herself here in Enniscorthy. In over 20 years of travelling together this is the first time we have ever had a problem and it has taught me a valuable lesson that when things go wrong it is so important to have experienced and competent backup. Full marks Marie and Mackin Travel for top class customer service – take a well deserved bow. – Maria Nolan

A Diamond of a Festival in Enniscorthy As a founder of wexford Literary festival, now celebrating its 5th birthday, i was extremely proud and gratified to hear it described as ‘a diamond of a festival’ by chairman of enniscorthy municipal district, keith doyle, in his address at the launch of this year’s event at enniscorthy castle on 26th April. ‘this little gem’, keith continued, ‘adds a bit of panache, quality and class to our town’. High praise indeed from Enniscorthy’s First Citizen and thank you most sincerely Keith for your very kind and uplifting words.

The graceful ambience of the Castle’s drawing room lent itself beautifully to the elegant occasion as Chair of the Festival, Carmel Harrington, welcomed notable guests Keith Doyle, James Browne TD, Councillors Willie Kavanagh and Kathleen Codd Nolan, Town Manager Liz Hore, President of Enniscorthy Chamber Maree Lyng and Fr. Odhran Furlong and special guest Billy Roche and wife Patti, saying that a lot of hard work and commitment had gone into making the Festival what it is today internationally recognised on the literary calendar.

Open Call at TPC friday 13th is unlucky for some but it certainly wasn’t for me as i attended the 3rd Annual open call Art exhibition at the Presentation centre, enniscorthy, and having attended all three i can say unequivocally that it was the most successful and the best to date. Cllr John O`Rourke officially opened the Exhibition complimenting Lisa and the Centre and indeed all the artists who contributed to the colourful and creative exhibition. He said not only is the exhibition a wonderful opportunity for the artists, it is also an opportunity for all to call in and see the wonderful Centre.

John’s own particular favourite was Cots on the Slaney and he presented the prize to the artist Martin Kirwan. The large crowd, viewing the artistic showcase, was akin to people moving through a very exotic and splendid garden, stopping long and often to admire and immerse themselves in the beauty all around. Each year the standard of Open Call is improving, the numbers of those exhibiting expanding and the variety and diversity of the work producing greater interest and hopefully increased sales. This is a win, win situation for all and full marks to The Presentation Centre which once

‘We have come a very long way’, Carmel continued, ‘from the evening myself, Maria Nolan, Richie Cotter and Annie Gilpin decided that we were going to establish a Literary Festival in Enniscorthy to celebrate existing Wexford writers and give them a platform for their work and inspire, connect and support potential local writers. And I think we have done exactly what we set out to do with many of our local writers participating in our Festival over the past 5 years and many from our Festival Committee and Festival attendees going forward to have their own work published like Caroline Busher, Cat Hogan, Adele O’Neill, Sheila Forsey and Tina O’Callaghan to name but a few.’ ‘We also honoured and celebrated our well known Wexford literary talents naming our Literary Awards ‘The Colm Toibin Short Story Award’ and ‘The Anthony Cronin Poetry Award’ and last year we had entries from across the globe for both of these competitions including Israel, America, UK, Belgium and

Germany. This year the Festival is delighted to announce that one of Wexford’s finest and best loved author / playwright / singer/ songwriter Billy Roche has very kindly agreed to lend his name to our One Act Play Award and in an effort of establishing gender balance we are adding the name of an extremely talented and inspiring lady to the mix calling our Vintage Window Display competition the Eileen Gray Award.’ Billy Roche said that he was deeply honoured to have an Award in his name and delighted to be asked to launch this year ’s Festival in Enniscorthy as he had many fond memories of the town and one in particular being ‘carried shoulder high by a slightly inebriated Andy Doyle from the Duffry down to Murphy Flood’s Hotel in 1996’ after Enniscorthy Drama won the All Ireland with Billy’s famous play Poor Beast in the Rain. ‘Embrace what you have in Enniscorthy’, Billy went on, ‘it is something special, you know the old adage – eat local honey because that’s what cures you`.

Sound advice indeed from a man who knows what he is talking about. Carmel concluded by thanking Wexford County Council and Enniscorthy Municipal District Council and Byrne’s Bookstore for their generous sponsorship saying that this year’s Festival is happening in Enniscorthy from 2nd 4th Nov to coincide with the Wexford Opera Festival utilising all our beautiful Enniscorthy venues and will include the Billy Roche One A c t P l a y Aw a rd a t T h e Presentation Centre on Friday 2nd November with Enniscorthy Drama, Panel Discussions and Workshops on Saturday 3rd at Riverside Park Hotel with such well

known authors as Paul Williams, June Caldwell, Hazel Gaynor, Catherine Ryan Howard, Shane Dunphy, Paul Berry, Jane Casey, Andrew Cartmel, Sinead Gleeson, Dr. Sarah Cleary and our own Carmel Harrington and Caroline Busher, A Candlelit Evening at Enniscorthy Castle with Carmel Harrington and Liz Nugent and Sunday 4th November Awards Ceremony at The Athenaeum. We are open now for submissions and before we took our leave of the Castle the resident ghost Sir Writesalot made an appearance to encourage all to get writing. Exciting times ahead for this jewel in Enniscorthy’s crown. – Maria Nolan

again has excelled itself hosting this wonderful initiative that allows local artists, internationally known, nationally known, locally known and known only to themselves, the opportunity to exhibit their work and have it viewed over a six-week period against the backdrop of this aesthetically beautiful venue. Credit must go to Manager, Elizabeth Whyte, for her vision for the Centre and indeed for local talent of all genres and to Curator of the Exhibition, Lisa Byrne, who not only organised and MC`d the event but is also displaying some of her own very distinctive art in the Exhibition, a gal of many talents. on thursday evening 12th April i had the pleasure of attending and enjoying a creative writing class at enniscorthy Library with friend and former wexford Literary festival colleague cat Hogan. The waif like Cat is passionate about her craft and speaks animatedly about her writing and her very clear message was simply ‘Go for it’. ‘There is probably at least one book in all of us, so stop procrastinating and step into that space and actively take ownership of it’, she told the Library audience. Irish Times best-selling author of They All Fall Down and There Was A Crooked Man confided that her motivation to sit down and write was her burning desire ‘to write a novel that would keep someone up all night reading it’. ‘Writing’, she went on, ‘is simply a tool used by storytellers to spin a yarn’ and potential writers shouldn’t be afraid to ‘go for it’. ‘If you make writing a priority you will find the

time to write and if you sit down and write a thousand words a day you will have the bones of a novel in three months’. ‘For me’, Cat said, ‘writing has to evoke all the senses, it has to take the reader right there, they have to feel it, hear it, see it, touch it and smell it’. She had lots of useful tips for those present putting special emphasis on ‘knowing your characters’. ‘If you know your characters you will never have writers block’, according to Cat. And this talented and enthusiastic lady certainly hasn’t with her third novel already well on the way. A most informative, interesting and enjoyable evening and one that will hopefully be repeated as Librarian Jarlath Glynn announced that a sixweek Creative Writing Class will begin at Enniscorthy Library this September. So no excuse for any potential writers in the Enniscorthy area not to ‘go for it’. – Maria Nolan

John Redmond, one of ireland’s greatest parliamentarians, died on 6th march 1918 and was remembered in his home town, wexford, on sunday 15th April with a full and informative programme of events organised by wexford county council and our excellent Library service under the meticulous and edifying guidance of eileen morrissey and Jarlath glynn. The Opening Address of the Redmond 100 Centenary Commemoration was given by Úachtarán na hÉireann, President Michael D. Higgins, attending with his wife Sabina, indicative of the level of importance nationally for the event. President Higgins said that it was indeed a pleasure for him to be in Wexford for the historic occa-

sion and a particular pleasure to meet members of the Redmond f a m i l y, i n c l u d i n g J o h n Redmond`s two great granddaughters and his great great grand-daughter, who travelled from England to be in Wexford for the memorial ceremonies. MC Eileen Morrissey called on Chairman of Wexford County Council, John Hegarty, who formally welcomed President Higgins and Sabina to Wexford saying that they had already attended a wedding and the Light Opera Launch so they seemed to be getting great value from their trip to the county. John was lavish in his praise of John Redmond, a great Wexfordman and one of the most prominent Irish politicians ever. He spoke about the many thousands who lined the streets of Wexford for his funeral in 1918, telling the large library gathering that `all the shops were closed and all the windows in Wexford had their blinds drawn`. `A patriot, a politician and a great Wexfordman,` John concluded. C h i e f o rg a n i s e r a n d Redmond expert Jarlath Glynn i n t ro d u c e d t h e s p e a k e r s : Redmond biographer Dermot Meleady author of From Parnellite to National Leader, Ronan McGreevy author of John Redmond and World War I and Martin O`Donoghue author of The Legacy of John Edward Redmond.

At 3pm at St. John’s Graveyard, Mayor of Wexford Jim Moore and Minister Paul Kehoe spoke of the significant contribution made by John Redmond with Minister Kehoe quoting from John Dillon`s Oration at his burial in Wexford in 1918: `Time will do justice to his work and to his statesmanship and all the people of Ireland, even those who misunderstand him today, will in time come to understand the greatness of his life and of his work and of the unselfishness of his career.’ Well it seems that finally that time has come as his great granddaughter Dr. Mary Green thanked all in Wexford for the wonderful reception and the welcome recognition for her great grandfather saying that up to now he had been essentially written off the pages of Irish history. Well it seems that no more will John Redmond and his contribution to Irish history be forgotten as wreaths were laid in his memory by President Higgins, Mayor Jim Moore, Minister Paul Kehoe and great grand-daughter Dr. Mary Greene at the impressive Redmond crypt at St. John`s Graveyard, his final resting place. A truly enlightening, emotional and historic day and very well done to all in Wexford County Council and Wexford Library who contributed to this momentous occasion. – Maria Nolan
