comment The main construction work on the Enniscorthy Flood Defence Scheme will commence next year. If you can’t make it along to the library you can check out a great video of what the scheme will look like when complete – search “Enniscorthy Flood Defence Scheme” on YouTube. all about Mac antivirus

FERNS COMPUTER SERVICES

If you’re a Mac user, you get mixed messages about whether viruses and other malicious software pose a bona fide threat. Historically, Mac fans have touted their platform as immune to the kinds of data attacks and other hostile intrusions that plague the Windows world. Apple itself even reassured its customers for years that Macs “don’t get viruses.” It even said so in a series of commercials that first aired in 2006.

Complete Professional Computer Services for Home and Business

While it’s true Macs are more secure than PCs, they’re still vulnerable to viruses, and they always have been. By design, the Mac operating system is more secure against the threat of viruses and malware, but there are still plenty of ways for malware to find its way in. Another thing protecting Macs is the fact that they’re less popular than PCs, but that doesn’t stop some hackers from targeting Macs. Despite this, there are still tech pundits who recklessly advise against taking even basic security precautions, such as installing a cybersecurity program.

by DaviD pohluDek Ferns compuTer services

How do you know if your Mac has a malware infection? Look for such clues as: • You land on a web page you’ve selected, and advertising banners start to intrude on you aggressively. • You notice that random web page text suddenly has a hyperlink. • Browser pop ups get in your face, earnestly recommending fake updates or other fake software. • You notice other unwanted adware programs, which you did not authorise or which were installed without your knowledge. • Your Mac crashes, heats up, or runs its fan faster than normal for no apparent reason. It may be working on an intensive task because of a cryptocurrency miner on your system, most likely installed by a Mac Trojan. If you see any of the above, or other strange behaviour, then it’s high time you got yourself some cybersecurity protection. Furthermore, though the general consumer may consider cybersecurity synonymous with the term “antivirus,” the more accurate designation should be “anti-malware,” a catchall term that describes all malicious software, regardless of type. Ferns Computer Services has been in business in Ferns since May 2007. Established by David Pohludek, it has a huge clientele base all over Co. Wexford and beyond.

E-Parking for Enniscorthy improved parking payment options for enniscorthy, wexford, gorey and new ross will be available soon as Co. wexford will be introducing “parkbytext” so one can download a free app and choose to pay by text, app, or online using a smartphone. so no more scrabbling around for small change or trying to find the nearest meter! and there will be an optional messaging system to remind you when your time is up so you can return to your car or simply top up your payment. The then Cathaoirleach of Wexford County Council, C l l r J o h n H e g a r t y, a n d Director of Services, Eamonn Hore, signed a contract with representatives Sean O’Dwyer, IT Director, and Andrew

Cosgrove, Marketing Manager of “parkbytext” in County Hall on 8th June (see photo above) to bring EParking to Wexford’s four main towns. The parkbytext app allows the customer to use their mobile phone to pay their parking fees easily and quickly. The app also allows customers to “top up” their parking fee, meaning no rushing back to the car at the end of the payment period to avoid a fine simply use the app to make a further payment and your parking fee is instantly updated. Councillor John Hegarty welcomed the signing of the contract. “Wexford has always been a progressive county and we are constantly looking for new ways, particularly in

the use of modern technology, to improve our services to the public” said the Cathaoirleach. “Parkbytext” is a perfect example, using today’s technology to improve existing services and offer additional convenience, flexibility and peace of mind to those who work in or visit our main towns”. Director of Services Eamonn Hore said: “It is important also to reassure the public that this new method of parking payment will complement - not replace - our current parking meter payment facilities. It simply offers an alternative and easy-touse payment method to those who use our parking services”. A go-live date is planned for September 2018. n

Vinegar Hill – a major European battlefield site the 21st June, the longest day of the year, became the longest day ever in the annals of wexford’s history in 1798 when the battle of Vinegar hill raged from 7am leaving 1,500 dead rebels in its wake, decimating the county and recorded as the last stand of the wexford rebellion. The Longest Day Research Project, the brainchild of Tony Larkin and funded by Wexford County Council, has over the past four years conducted historical research and an archaeological study of the famous

battlefield and their findings are due to be published later this year. At a major conference at the end of May in The Presentation Centre, opened by Noel Whelan, author and political analyst and columnist with the Irish Times, and hosted by Enniscorthy Municipal District Council, the exciting news that Vinegar Hill is destined to become not just one of the major battlefield sites of Ireland but indeed of Europe was the message comi n g l o u d a n d c l e a r f ro m

Enniscorthy Chairman Keith Doyle and Town Manager Liz Hore, both passionate and enthusiastic supporters of all things 1798, who had great praise for everything being done and all involved giving particular mention to Enniscorthy Historical Re-enactment Society who once again turned out superbly for the event. Delivered by internationally recognised experts Dr. Ronan O`Flaherty, Edmund Joyce, Dr. Niall Brady, Cian Hogan, Damian Shiels and our own

Jacqui Hynes, the conference was an unique opportunity for those in attendance to hear first hand the exciting reveals that are sure to place Vinegar Hill at the top of the list of key battlefield sites in Irish history. The four-year extensive research and the findings it has revealed has allowed the project team to map the battle as it unfolded on that fateful day on 21st June. Research highlights include: – The location of the notorious rebel prison, Beale’s Barn, still standing and

intact on a local farm. Proof of General Needham’s late arrival and the reason behind it. – The location of a series of dug pits that are strong candidates for mass graves. – An incredibly rich assemblage of finds, the richest, in fact, from any battlefield as yet investigated in Ireland, including lead bullets, weapon fragments and a fragment of an exploded shell. An excellent, informative and ground-breaking conference –

and well done to all those involved in the organising and to those responsible for the funding of the Research Project – it is indeed high time that Vinegar Hill is given the attention, respect and recognition it has always deserved. Terraced thousands died, shaking scythes at cannon. The hillside blushed, soaked in our broken wave. They buried us without shroud or coffin And in August… the barley grew up out of our grave. – Maria Nolan

Project Ireland funding

Back to School Allowance

enniscorthy, wexford, gorey and new ross and their surrounding areas are to benefit from €4bn worth of funding being made available nationwide through project ireland 2040 to improve the quality of services and technology across the country. Project Ireland 2040 has laid out the funding as follows: €2bn for urban regeneration, €1bn for rural development, €500m for climate action and €500m for disruptive technologies. Minister Paul Kehoe said the funds are particularly important given the challenges facing Ireland post Brexit.

over 4,200 children in wexford are set to benefit from the back to school allowance, according to minister paul kehoe, which will be paid the week ending Friday, 13th July. “The Back to School Clothing and Footwear Allowance is a means-tested, once-off payment aimed at helping families with these costs to alleviate pressures at back to school time,” Minister Kehoe said. “Fine Gael is determined to use the benefits of our recov-

Minister Paul Kehoe TD

“Brexit is bringing a myriad of challenges down the tracks and we need to be prepared for different outcomes. The best way to do that is to

invest in our towns and villages – that’s what these four funds are about,” Minister Kehoe said. The primary purpose of the €2 billion funding for urban regeneration is to secure more compact, sustainable growth in Ireland’s five cities and other large urban centres (the 59 eligible cities and towns are listed in an annex). This funding, additional to normal sectoral funding streams, is designed to leverage a greater proportion of residential and commercial development, supported by infrastructure, services and amenities, within the existing built-up areas of our larger urban settlements. n

ering economy to support those who need it most.” The Back to School Clothing and Footwear Allowance is available to primary and secondary school students and is paid at a rate of €125 for children aged 4-11 and €250 for children aged 12 years and over. In order to qualify for the Allowance, the applicant must be in receipt of certain social welfare payments or be taking part in training, employment or adult education schemes,

with total household income below a certain threshold. The vast majority of families who received this payment last year will receive it again this year without having to reapply. Only those who do not receive notification of an automated payment by early July, or those who want to make a first time application, will need to apply. Everyone can check out their eligibility at www.welfare.ie/backtoschool. n

Funding for local and regional roads regional and local roads in Co. wexford will get €600,000 in funding over the course of two years through the Community involvement grant

programme, according to minister paul kehoe. The Programme will allow a wide range of works to be undertaken including road sur-

face strengthening and repair works, the repair and construction of footways, the easing of bends and the provision of passing bays. n

All change at the top… At the 2018 AGM of Wexford County Council, Enniscorthy Municipal District-based Councillor Keith Doyle (FF) was elected as Cathaoirleach of the Council, replacing outgoing Cathaoirleach John Hegarty. Keith, whose father, Andy, was also County Co. Chairman in the past, is pictured presenting John Hegarty with a token of his year in office. Also in picture is Tom Enright, Co. Manager. bree/davidstown Community games members michael roche (Cbs/davidstown), david o’leary and gavin o’Connor (pupils of davidstown ps), recently won gold medals at the national Community games u14 debating Finals in the university of limerick. Eight teams representing Wexford, Offaly, Kildare, Laois, Galway, Wicklow, Limerick

and Clare took part in the competition. In the final debate of the day, Michael, Gavin and David opposed the motion, ‘This house believes that Ireland should give more money to poor countries’ against a combined areas Co. Clare team. It was a wonderful performance by the three boys from the Davidstown area which earned them the gold medals. This team had quali-

fied for the National Finals, at the end of April, by defeating Castlebridge Crossabeg in the county final on home territory in Davidstown Primary School opposing the motion, ‘This house believes that vending machines should be banned in Irish schools’. Taking part in this county final were Michael, Gavin and Shane Jordan with David as sub. The team was coached by Clare Doyle. n

The people deserve more! “the people of wexford and the people of ireland deserve more. it’s time to build a new economy for a changing ireland.” this was the message of sinn Féin general election candidate, Cllr. Johnny mythen, who was speaking after attending his party’s ard Fheis in belfast last month. “Rents are at runaway levels and childcare costs are the highest in Europe. A far higher than average percentage of young people in Co. Wexford are unemployed or live in an economy which too often offers them only low-paid, insecure work. “The people of Wexford and the people of Ireland deserve more. It’s time to build a new economy for a changing Ireland. “Sinn Féin offers a programme to create a modern economy across our island, for the first time guaranteeing world-class services as your birthright, from cradle to grave. “We see signs that our economy is recovering. But every day in Enniscorthy, Wexford, New Ross and Gorey I hear those who tell me and our councillors that they don’t feel any better off. Fine Gael tell us they offer stability. But they have cast a cloud of fear and insecurity in homes all across the state.

Cllr Johnny Mythen at the Sinn Féin Ard Fheis in Belfast last month

“They will never understand the anxiety of being one pay cheque away from financial distress, they will never understand the ‘what ifs?’ How will we cope if the car breaks down or if they cut my hours this week or if a loved one falls ill?” “We hear you when you tell us that you work all the hours you can, you pay your taxes and all of your bills, and at the end of the week you still struggle to make ends meet. We hear you if you’re a small business person with high rent and rates costs and struggling to stay

afloat. “I hear you, and I say to you if Pearse Doherty, who spoke to the people of Wexford just over a week ago, is Minister for Finance he will have your back. Sinn Féin will have your back. “We don’t just want change – we need transformation. Transformation to end the human tragedy of 10,000 homeless citizens, over 700,000 on hospital waiting lists, and hundreds each day on hospital trollies. “Fine Gael and Fianna Fail are attempting to normalise these crises. We will not allow that to happen!” n

A National Treasure at The Presentation Centre

Paddy Cullivan and Maria Nolan

Performer Paddy Cullivan, described by David McWilliams as ‘a national treasure’ brought his ‘one man unique look at Irish History Show’ to The Presentation Centre last month and I have to say, I, along with the rest of the sixty-strong audience, thoroughly enjoyed it and my heartiest compliments to The Presentation Centre for once again bringing something new and different to our doorstep. The 10 Dark Secrets of 1798 explores issues like, the mystery surrounding the death of

Wolfe Tone, the possibility that the establishment figure Lord Kilwarden or Arthur Wolfe, after whom Wolfe Tone was named and who intervened to save his life issuing two writs of habeas corpus for him, was actually his real father, the ambiguous role of the Emancipator Daniel O`Connell in the rebellion, how Napper Tandy’s relationship with Napoleon allowed him (Napoleon) to pay off Josephine’s enormous gambling debts, the Napoleonic General who scuppered the French landing at Bantry Bay

and could have been responsible for the French defeat at the B a t t l e o f Wa t e r l o o , h o w Protestant Republicanism quickly changed to Orange Unionism after 1798 and much, much more. This is an intriguing, amusing, entertaining, interesting and very believable scrutiny of the before, during and after of the most influential rebellion ever in Irish history which united Catholic, Protestant and Dissenter. We heard of the Kildare Republic which lasted 5 days, the Wexford Republic which lasted all of 22 days

with 21 battles and the Republic of Connaught, the Races of Castlebar and the major naval battle off Tory Island. Cullivan, a passionate, funny, animated and knowledgeable historian with a genius for story-telling and an infectious sense of humour explodes many of the inconsistencies of 1798 and replaces them with perfectly acceptable and indeed preferable alternatives. The performance lasts for approximately two and a half hours and delivers history in an uniquely enjoyable and memorable way, interspersed

with songs and visuals and in my opinion should be introduced into our schools. Far too many of our young people now are choosing not to study history because it is ‘too stuffy and boring’ well here is one opportunity of making it a lot less so. A great insight into the ‘greatest stories never told’. Paddy Cullivan is an amazing singer, songwriter, comic writer, comedian, satirist, columnist, host and TV contributor and is the lead singer with The Late, Late Show house band – the Camembert Quartet,

and most of all is informative and extremely entertaining. He ended the evening by thanking The Presentation Centre and its staff and complimenting the beautiful venue and he said he was blown away by the Guard of Honour provided at the venue by Enniscorthy Historical Reenactment Society who he said were a ‘credit to the town and to their brave forebearers’. Finally, he thanked Wexford for coming out on the night and of course for coming out in 1798! – Maria Nolan

Literature on the Lawn Enniscorthy Credit Union Night at the Dogs Pic: Maria Nolan.

If Carlsberg did magical evenings on the lawn then Sunday 24th June at Wells House would, I have no doubt, be one of them. Bathed in glorious summer evening sunshine, thespians of all ages gathered on the beautifully manicured lawn in front of the stately Wells House on rugs, deck and directors’ chairs, to enjoy and appreciate the excellent production of the Louisa May Alcott classic Little Women performed expertly by Chapterhouse Theatre. Another inspired and innovative event by the pioneering Wells House team, headed up by owner Sabine Rosler, the

evening was a splendid blend of drama, literature and indulgence as people lounged on rugs or reclined in deck chairs, enjoying some al fresco dinning, strawberries and champers, elegant wines and admirable entertainment. Little Women, the favourite book of my childhood, a Christmas present long, long ago which brought memories and magic flooding back to me. They were my heroines – the March sisters Meg, Jo, Beth and Amy and I fell in love with the author Louisa May Alcott, plaguing my mother until I got all of her books including Good Wives, Jo’s Boys and Little Men. It was a love

affair that never ended, I can still remember almost every chapter of the book and was intrigued to see how Chapterhouse would bring the entire novel together in one production. And I have to say they did an amazing job condensing events without losing any of the book’s charm. The set was minimal and worked extremely well set against the backdrop of Wells and the actors delivery and portrayal of the characters was top class. Well done again, Wells, a most fantastic evening of drama, nostalgia and extravagance. – Maria Nolan

Enniscorthy Credit Union (ECU) Night at the Dogs, L-R: Liam Waters (ECU), Tanya Gregory (ECU), Jim Turner (Greyhound Track), Mary Hennebry (ECU), Mark Daly (ECU).

The Greyhound Race Night sponsored by Enniscorthy Credit Union on 16th June was a most enjoyable night out for the large attendance. Enniscorthy Credit Union had sponsored greyhound racing

nights on two previous occasions and they also proved to be very popular nights. Despite a biting wind on the track, the enthusiastic crowds on 16th June included lots of families who enjoyed the oppor-

tunity to go to the dogs. The children loved the goodie bags and soft drinks provided by the credit union and the facepainter was very busy all night. All in all it was a great night out for all the family. n

Strawberry Fair’s international flavour An international element to the Opening of the 2018 Strawberry Fair / Street Rhythms & Roots Festival was created with the arrival of the Australian Ambassador to Ireland, Mr. Richard Andrews, and the presence of globally renowned author, Carmel Harrington, whose books are now translated into ten different languages and read right across the world. Mr. Andrews was visibly impressed with a Guard of Honour by Enniscorthy Historical Re-enactment Society as he arrived at Enniscorthy Castle with Minister Paul Kehoe and James Browne TD. He also had the opportunity to meet and greet our beautiful Strawberry Princesses before being welcomed to a pre-opening Castle Reception by Chairman of Enniscorthy Municipal District Council, Keith Doyle, and President of Enniscorthy Chamber, Maree Lyng. MC Liz Hore called on Conor Kenny and Serena Casey, students of Enniscorthy Vocational College, who provided a mellow musical interlude on tin whistle and flute prior to Ambassador Andrews

thanking everyone for the wonderful reception he had received during the day throughout the county and in particular for the ‘unique welcome at Enniscorthy Castle with guns, spears and beautiful Princesses’. Chairman Keith Doyle presented Ambassador Andrews with a purple and gold emblem of the county and invited him to Market Square for the Official Opening of the 51st Festival by local best-selling author Carmel Harrington. After the introduction of the Princesses at Market Square, Chairman of the Festival Jimmy Gahan called on Bernie Morrissey and Richie Cotter who outlined the wonderful programme of events over the weekend on behalf of Street Rhythms and Strawberry Roots, with Fairytales at the Castle, endless street entertainment including the Garda and Army Bands and over 30 free gigs in various venues around the town. Leaving the best wine until last, Jimmy then called on Carmel Harrington to address the crowd and open the Festival. Carmel began by saying that it was an honour for her to for-

mally open the 51st Fair/Street Rhythms & Roots Festival. ‘Strawberries and this annual Festival form part of the cultural and social fabric of Enniscorthy’s history. All our childhood memories are tied up with the Strawberry Fair, it was the highlight of the summer for generations of us.’ ‘The sun always shone brighter back then’, Carmel continued, ‘our eyes would be wide with excitement as we took in the stalls and carnival rides along the Promenade. Our hands sweatily clutched our pocket money as we tried to win a goldfish or hook a duck.’ ‘It all seemed so exotic to us back then, the bright colours and the noise and craic of people having fun. And it was exotic. One year, we came across a stall that gave you a chance to have a photograph taken with a monkey – yes a real live monkey – now that was exotic back in the day and I still have the photo to prove it.’ `We listened to the music in the Market Square and got to queue for our punnet of strawberries. mother who would nod once and with glee we watched the stall owner as she scattered glistening, pearly-white wonderfulness onto the big juicy strawberries, followed by a dollop of whipped cream. Those punnets from my childhood were the most delicious I`ve ever tasted.’ What a memorable trip down strawberry lane with Carmel Harrington and how marvellous it is to have a celebrity right here amongst us who can share all those wonderfully happy memories of Strawberry Fair. A most perfect choice to open the 2018 Festival as we head into the next fifty years. – Maria Nolan

It’s not called the Enniscorthy Summer Event for nothing – the Strawberry Ball at Riverside Park Hotel on Thursday, 31st May, with an attendance of over 300, is a gathering of the beautiful and bountiful as local politicians, business people, sponsors, media, current queen, former queens, princesses, families and friends congregate to celebrate all that is glamorous, stylish and good about our town and our Festival. Now in its 51st year the Strawberry Festival continues to produce not just delicious strawberries but each year a crop of attractive, intelligent, fun-loving and charming Princesses and this year was no exception and the Strawberry Ball is an occasion for them to showcase themselves, their sponsors, their families and all that is good and wholesome about the youth of our town today. Indeed, the Strawberry Ball gives all of us an opportunity to come together to rejoice in the onset of the summer season and that was certainly the case on Thursday 31st May as the

summer sun shone brilliantly on all the glitz and glamour of the occasion. Red and white were the dominant and preferred colours of this year’s Princesses with one or two navy and black numbers in the mix. Ball gowns of a variety of shapes and styles were popular with elegant jumpsuits a close second. Hair, make-up, nails, eyebrows and eyelashes were all perfectly applied, coiffed and executed, any or all of these lovely lasses could glide the catwalks of London, Paris or Milan or grace the red carpets of New York or Cannes Film Festival. Jimmy Gahan, MC and Chairman of the Festival Committee, complimented each of them as they were introduced by the 2017 Queen Megan O`Shea and Jimmy went on to thank Megan for her wonderful work for the town and the Festival over the past year and committee member and chief organiser of the Ball, Nadia Donohoe, who once again, Jimmy said, worked her magic creating a Ball fit for any

Are You Fr. Dennis Doyle of Kilmore came up with an idea 3 years ago to raise much needed funds for his parish. A south east country music festival. He knew it was a big undertaking with a lot of risk attached if it didn't work. The bands that were needed to run such an event didn't come cheap by any means and whether the crowd turned up or not, somebody had to pay them. It was going to need a dedicated, hard-working group of people. Fr. Dennis decided to team up with Rathangan Parish and the Southeast Country Music Festival Committee was formed. They approached the owners of the grounds that the Killag Agriculture Show is held on, picked a date, booked the bands and got down to work. So on the 21st of August 2016 the very first country music festival in the south east took place with Nathan Carter headlining and Michael English, Paddy O'Brien, Robert Mizzell and Lee Mathews supporting. Everything didn't go quite to plan though as the headline act took another booking for the week after just down the road in Loftus Hall, and as with all outdoor events, the weather is everything, and even Fr. Dennis couldn't hold off the rain that day. But, the people still turned up. Not as much as could have been, given the few setbacks, but I was there and thought maybe, just maybe, it was a blessing in disguise. There was a big enough attendance to balance the books and learn a few valuable lessons as to what would be needed or changed had a bigger crowd turned up.

DAncing?

He contributes a regular music and dance column to the Slaney News.

And that's exactly what happened the next year. Moved back to the 30th of July 2017

with Nathan Carter headlining again, and Mike Denver, Jimmy Buckley and Cliona

Hagan making their debut, all that was needed now was the sun to make its first appearance also. And low and behold, it turned up in true fashion, as did the crowds. The rich and the poor, the young and the old, the brave and the bold. And the Southeast Country Music Committee led by Fr. Dennis Doyle, were ready for them!! And so as we find ourselves in July once again, and this time the date is set for the 22nd of July for this year’s South East Country Music Festival. Gerry Guthrie is the only newcomer with Jimmy Buckley, Lee Mathews, Cliona Hagan and The Conquerors returning. But Mike Denver this time is headlining, and I for one am very excited about this as "The Galway Boy" (as he is fondly known,) started touring at the age of 16, has 14 albums to his name, was awarded "Entertainer Of The Year" in 2016 and is one of the very few singers to always guarantee a full house here in the southeast. He's every bit the showman, right out on the front of the stage, connecting with the audience, playing and saying what they want to hear. He reminds me of the old time shopkeepers who knew just what their customers wanted! We here at the Slaney News wish Fr. Dennis Doyle and the Kilmore/Rathangan committee the very best, for this, the 3rd Southeast Music Festival in 2018. I'll be back next month, same time, same place, for the the next edition of the Slaney News. – DeclAN FlANAgAN

Silvertones annual concert success

James Dobbs and Ashley Doran

Congrats to Enniscorthy Musical Society’s James Dobbs who won Best Comedian in the national AIMS (Association of Irish Musical Societies) Awards for his role as Dennis in All Shook Up. Ashley Doran was also nominated for Best Comedienne for her role as Natalie in the same show.

Once again Enniscorthy’s Pugin Cathedral was packed for the annual Silvertones Concert in aid of Hospice Homecare last month. It is both indicative of the level of support for this wonderful charity and the level of enthusiasm for the excellent Enniscorthy Choir that now in its 9th year the annual concert is as popular as ever attracting a large crowd. Silvertones Choral Director, Eithne Corrigan, had her charges in tip-top form and in magnificent voice as they treated the Cathedral audience to beautif u l re n d i t i o n s o f Tr y To Remember, God Help the Outcasts, The Road Less Travelled, and It Don`t Mean A Thing ably assisted by the talented Aileen Donohoe and Tony

Carty who did a most enjoyable arrangement of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s classic Don`t Cry for Me Argentina. Both gifted artists brought the house down with Tony’s powerful performances from the musicals Chess and Les Mis and Aileen’s theatrical and splendid interpretation of Doris Day`s Calamity Jane with The Windy City and My Secret Love – no-one does Doris Day better than Aileen Donohoe. The Orchestra – Fintan Cleary on piano, Siobhan Lynch on cello and Ann Wickham on flute provided pitch perfect accompaniment along with some superb solos and duets. The concert which was part of this year’s Bealtaine Festival celebrating ‘Creativity as we age’ is an endorsement of life

and fun and achievement after 50 or 60 or 70 or indeed even 80 and all involved are to be highly commended. It would be remiss of me not to mention the exquisite arrangement of flowers at the entrance to St. Aidan’s and pay my sincerest compliments to the florist who certainly set the tone of the evening. Introduced by MC David Metcalf, the entertaining event ended in a flourish with the choir along with special guests Aileen and Tony and the entire Cathedral audience singing that poignant and beautiful number from the Sound of Music – Edelweiss. What can I say, well done, I am already looking forward to next year’s Summer Concert. – Maria Nolan

Business in Bloom! With a lot of negativity in the air about retailing in Enniscorthy, it’s wonderful to see businesses on the town’s pedestrianised Raſter Street investing in the future of their retail businesses. A major 5,000 sq.ſt. expansion at Smyth’s Arro is almost complete which will make it one of the largest retailers in Co. Wexford. Next door to Smyth’s is one of Enniscorthy’s most innovative shops called Stoc. Formerly known as DV8, it is run by Kathy and Darrell Boyd, who set it up in 2003. The couple have now been joined by their artistic son, Andrei, who finished college and lived abroad in Sydney and London before coming home to join the business. Andrei has created a new name – ‘Stoc.’ and a wonderful new look based around a flower theme. Two incredibly big and beautiful flower sculptures have been created by Andrei which not only adorn their own shopfront

Europe but specialising in free fit "lagenlook" clothing (meant to be worn layered) made in Italy. Accessories are a must at Stoc. Handbags, scarves, jewellery, sunglasses and more ensure Stoc. is a one-stop shop for the full look.

Andrei Boyd – the key driver behind the new look at Stoc. Andrei also does weddings and decorates shopfronts with floral displays for other clients.

but have added a new dimension to Raſter Street as a whole. While the shopfront has changed, the same fantastic ranges of clothes, high quality fashion footwear, handbags and fashion accessories of all kinds are still available at unbeatable prices. Stoc. doesn't do brands. This allows it to keep prices very competitive. It sources stock from all over

For those who prefer to do their shopping online, Stoc. has embraced that trend also. Facebook is a great friend with a substantial mail order trade direct from their page “Stoc” which now has over 22,000 followers! And of course you can always phone the shop on 053 9234538. A full website is on the way soon. The next time you’re on Raſter Street make sure to call in to Stoc. and compliment them on their colourful shopfront. Who knows – this “flower power” theme might just catch on in Enniscorthy! n

CELEBRATING CULTURAL DIVERSITY The Wexford Roma Health Project which is funded by HSE Social Inclusion Southeast Healthcare, held a celebration of World Cultural Diversity, Dialogue and Development Day on Wednesday 23rd May in the Ferns Diocesan Youth Service (FDYS), Island Bridge, Enniscorthy, where the project is based. In a warm welcome to those attending the event, Ms. Jeanne Hendrick, Social Inclusion Southeast General Manger, said that, “World Day for Cultural Diversity for Dialogue and Development is a United Nations sanctioned international holiday… it provides an opportunity to help communities understand the value of

cultural diversity and learn how to live together in harmony.” Ms. Hendrick explained that the project aims to improve the health of Roma community members by supporting Roma to access health and other social services as well as running a number of health programmes. Mr. Kieran Donohoe, CEO of the FDYS, said, “We want to celebrate with the Roma community and our partners the great work of the Wexford Roma Health Project. There have been great outcomes achieved for all involved which will see positive impacts for our community in Co. Wexford.” Partnership working was highlighted by Mr. Donohoe when he empha-

sised that, “To date, the Roma Health Project has involved a collaboration between HSE Social Inclusion Southeast, the FDYS Community Youth Project funded by the Department of Children and Youth Affairs and the Roma community in Co. Wexford. However, with recent funding approval for an expansion of Roma work from the Department of Justice and Equality, this collaboration will now also include that Department.” Ms. Gabi Muntean, Community Worker from Pavee Point, spoke about the National Roma Needs Assessment (20172021) and said that, “During the research I met members of my community who could not

put food on the table and who were living in houses that were completely unfit for human beings.” Gabi Muntean said that, “We are happy that Roma voices are finally being heard even though it was sometimes shocking and hard to hear the results but this is the reality for Roma in Ireland.” In concluding, Ms. Jeanne Hendrick said that the day is, “an opportunity for us all to celebrate the benefits of cultural diversity, including humanity’s rich heritage, and to continue to work towards building an inclusive society based on the values of equality and human rights, mutual understanding and intercultural dialogue”. n

Presentation of Certificates to Roma: Ms. Diane Nurse, HSE Social Inclusion National Lead, presented certificates to four Roma who participated in a ten-week Youth and Community Course delivered by the Wexford Waterford Education and Training Board (ETB). Ms. Sarah Lavan, Community Education Facilitator with the ETB, presented certificates to 8 Roma who completed a course in Safe Use of Surplus Food. These training programmes were delivered as part of an inter-agency pilot initiative aimed at providing Roma and Traveller participants in Wexford with the opportunity to progress onto further QQI Level training and employment opportunities in the area of health and social care.

Africa Day in Enniscorthy O n F r i d a y 2 5 t h M a y, Enniscorthy held its first ever Africa Day at The Presentation Centre hosted by Enniscorthy Municipal District Council and We x f o r d Local Development with funding support from Irish Aid. The beautiful Presentation Centre was ablaze with colour, activity, food, culture and smiling faces as people from Wexford and Africa came together to celebrate the relationship between Ireland and many African countries. A relationship that goes back through the generations when many of our Irish priests, nuns, missionaries and lay people went to Africa bringing spiritual, educational and economic guidance to what was then known as ‘the dark continent’. On Friday indeed the tables had turned as people from the many diverse communities in Africa brought their own distinctive and rich cultural tapestry to the community of Enniscorthy and Wexford. Chairman of Enniscorthy Council, Keith Doyle, welcomed everyone to the fabulous free lunchtime event saying, ‘Ireland has a close working relationship with Ethiopia, Tanzania, Malawi,

Sierra Leone, Mozambique, Uganda and Zambia and today we have a unique opportunity to taste and sample all that is great from Africa with a wonderful display of food, poetry, song and dance.’ Town Manager, Liz Hore, recalled her own sojourn in Africa saying that it was a special time for her and she welcomed Africa Day as ‘a forum for us to recognise and applaud the contribution that the African people are making to our Society through sport, economic development, culture, art and community initiatives’. Indeed, speakers Liz Hore, Michael Wall, Chairman of WLD and John O’Connor, Manager of the Enniscorthy Enterprise Centre, remembered Africa with fondness saying that ‘once you set foot in Africa it becomes a special place in your heart and one that you never forget’. Along with being treated to an African children’s welcome from many countries on the continent, we enjoyed poetry, Kenyan song and dance, Nigerian cultural dance and an Ethiopian Coffee Ceremony along with savouring the delicious food prepared by Essam Elmbaridi of the Taste Factory, Abbey Square, Enniscorthy,

which included Beef & Sultana Kobaba, Chicken Samosa and Kebabs, Minced Beef Pate, stuffed Courgette and my own special favourite, stuffed Vine Leaves, and a myriad of scrumptious desserts – Konafa, Baklava and Bird Nest, all I can tell you were fingerlickin’ good! Africa was always on my Bucket List but after Africa Day it has taken a most definite leap to the top of that schedule. Well done once again Enniscorthy Municipal District Council and Manager Liz Hore and We x f o r d Local Development for organising this most inspiring initiative which I hope will be the first of many. – Maria Nolan Above: A riot of colour at Africa Day at The Presentation Centre, Enniscorthy, hosted by Enniscorthy Municipal District and Wexford Local Development. Praise for Polish community The Polish community were commended last month for their contribution to County Wexford. Minister for Defence Paul Kehoe and the Polish ambassador, Ryszard Sarkowicz, attended the launch of Polska Eire, a week-long festival that celebrates the role played by Polish people in Ireland. Nearly 4,000 Polish people live in Wexford, the majority of whom travelled here since 2004. Addressing the event in Gorey, Minister Kehoe said Polish people have become part of the fabric of Wexford. “The size of the Polish community has led to an increase in connectivity, with over fifty flights a week between Ireland and eleven Polish cities,” the minister said. “Without doubt, the benefits of the Polish people coming to live in Wexford are equally shared by the local communities. “You have made Wexford and Ireland your home – and have helped create an extremely positive impression of Ireland around the world.

“For that, I want to sincerely thank you.” The event also involved the launch of a photo exhibition in Gorey Library, called My Kashubia. “What better way to celebrate the relationship between our two countries than through the art of photography,” Minister Kehoe said. The Fine Gael TD also spoke about the development of the Polish language through the school curriculum. “Currently, Polish is available for written examination only at Leaving Certificate, and is not part of the normal school curriculum,” the minister said. "However, I’m delighted to say that a new strategy launched by my colleague, Education Minister Richard Bruton, will bring about much welcome changes. “The strategy commits to the introduction of a Leaving Certificate specification for Polish for heritage speakers. “It is proposed to be introduced from September 2020, with the first Leaving Certificate examinations in the subject taking place two years later in 2022.” n

The Slaney News paid a recent visit to Wheelock Fruits, situated on a beautiful 16-acre site between Enniscorthy and Monageer. Long synonymous with strawberries, Wheelock’s now also produce raspberries and other soft fruits as well as pumpkins. The reason for our visit was to view the progress being made on a huge investment to turn the business into one of the top food-related attractions in the South East region. When complete this autumn, the site will

contain a 450sq.metres coffee shop / farm shop specialising in all the fine foods Co. Wexford has to offer, a huge outdoor cobbled area with seating for visitors to enjoy, an educational centre where the public can avail of classes in traditional arts and crafts e.g. woodturning, basket-weaving, etc, a children’s learning centre where children/school groups can learn all about strawberries and plant their own in a pot to take away. Being located beside the new Enniscorthy bypass motor-

way will undoubtedly help attract visitors from all over Ireland as a huge number of people will see the site as they travel the Dublin to Wexford/Rosslare road. With a beautiful river flowing through the site, established wooded areas, ornamental stone sculptures, rustic garden benches, meandering paths, etc, a visit to Wheelock Fruits will make a great family day out. We’ll make sure to carry more details in an upcoming issue of Slaney News. n

Taoglas leading the way Enniscorthy antenna provider Taoglas is engaged in the largest city-based deployment of IoT (Internet of Things) in the world so far. Around 3,200 smart sensors are being installed in street lights across San Diego in California, in a partnership between the city and General Electric. The vision is to use the city’s streetlights as the anchors of a digital network that will cut

energy use, monitor air quality and even highlight open parking spaces. The sensors cannot hear conversations but they are designed to identify live gunshots. The secret sauce in each sensor is two antennas designed and made by Taoglas. Previously named the Irish high kings of IoT, Enniscorthybased Taoglas last year revealed a $2m investment in an inter-

net of things (IoT) centre in San Diego. Taoglas is an under-thehood global leader in IoT yet many people in Enniscorthy may never have heard of them. Taoglas is blazing a trail when it comes to antennas for machine-to-machine (M2M) applications such as smart grids, home automation and medtech – the stuff that will spawn household names in the 21st century. n

The first in a range of ambitious projects being developed by Wexford County Council to attract investment and jobs to Wexford became reality on 8th June when Cathaoirleach John Hegarty officially opened the 5,000 sq ft Hatch Lab in Gorey. The Hatch Lab is on the M11 Business Campus in Gorey less than 1km from the M11 Motorway and offers incubation and co-working facilities for fledgling micro-enterprises within the innovation and tech-

nology sector. The state-of-theart facilities have been modelled on similar world-class innovation centres both in Ireland and abroad, with the result that clients and companies from across the south-east region who choose to locate in the Hatch Lab can enjoy services such as hot-desks, meeting space, joint administrative services and high-speed broadband within a unique co-working and start-up environment. The building has access to

up to 1GB of speed and boasts impressive facilities, including meeting rooms, conference room, coffee dock and canteen, shared printing services, skype booths, relaxations areas and private lockers. Users of the Hatch Lab can choose from a variety of charges, with Hot Desking available from €15 per day and Private Desk from €190 a month. Enniscorthy Enterprise and Technology Centre supplies the Hatch Lab with administration and operation services. n

Why is this training programme right for me?

• • •

Loads of ability but do not have the qualifications to get work that suits you? A job that does not fulfil you or reflect your ability and skills? Put off applying for interesting job opportunities because you don’t have the qualifications to prove you have the skills?

If you answered yes to any of the above we might just have a course that would suit you. This course uses a very simple training method, which does not resemble traditional teaching. Instead we focus on the huge range of skills that you already have and plan forward from there. The training is carried out in the Enniscorthy Enterprise Centre where you will work alongside new start-up businesses gaining invaluable skills that they have picked up during their journeys. The project is aimed at people who are currently unemployed and have no formal training or qualifications. It is ideal for people who started work early in life and have gained enormous life experience and skills, or for people who haven’t got on the work ladder yet.

Repair and Leasing Scheme

VET DIARY FOR JULY

with the Moyne Veterinary Hospital Joe Kavanagh is always amazed at the bond between pets and their owners. It's the height of Summer, all schools are out and kids are living the dream… sunshine, a whole Summer ahead of them to enjoy. It seems like only yesterday I was doing the same thing but life and time march on. The motto over the veterinary college insignia the first day I walked into the college was "Tempus Fugit"… Time flies… I thought it a strange motto to have but over 25 years after qualifying I can now appreciate the motto! Over that time my appreciation and estimation of the animals (and owners!!) has grown inestimably. The bond that exists between these wonderful creatures and their owners. The levels that owners sometimes go to do their best for their fourlegged friends still amazes me…

Wexford County Council’s Housing Department, in conjunction with the Department of Housing, Planning, Community and Local Government, has just introduced a new initiative under which property owners can avail of substantial financial aid in return for making vacant properties available to Wexford County Council for social housing. The new initiative is certain to be of interest to shop owners in Enniscorthy with overhead vacant accommodation which can be converted for use as private rented properties under Wexford County Council’s Social Housing Programme. Now seeking ‘Expressions of Interest’ from interested parties, Wexford County Council’s Housing Department is committed to paying, up front, for any or all repair work required to bring a property up to standard for letting in return for the prop-

erty being made available for social housing through a lease scheme for a period of at least 10 years. Enniscorthy Chamber of Commerce is supporting this housing initiative and is recommending it to its members. There are, however, a number of requirements in relation to this scheme: – The property has to be vacant for at least 12 months prior to submission: proof of vacancy will be required. – There has to be a social housing demand in the area. – The property has been assessed as being viable to provide social housing. Among the benefits of a long term lease agreement to the property owner include: – Guaranteed Rent. – Zero cost finance for repairs. – Avoid losing rent during vacant periods.

No dealing with tenants and day-to-day maintenance. – No need to collect rent or finding a new tenant. – Avoid advertising costs when seeking a new tenant. Wi t h We x f o r d C o u n t y Council’s Housing Dept now seeking ‘Expressions of Interest’ in the scheme, Enniscorthy and District Chamber of Commerce is planning an information evening soon when Housing Officer, Padraig O’Gorman and other relevant personnel from his Department will be on hand to explain in detail every aspect of this initiative. Keep an eye on the Slaney News Facebook page for more details. Expression of Interest F o r m s c a n b e h a d f ro m Wexford Co. Council Housing Dept tel 053 919 6274, email: housingcounter@wexfordcoco.ie n

An example is a lady client who drove from Dublin to her elderly father in Tipperary whose little Jack Russell bitch had been knocked down and had a fractured pelvis in several places, collected her and came on ahead to our hospital to have the dog worked on… and then back to Dublin. We used the kinesiology bioenergy and herbal remedies to help her recovery and with each visit she has made steady progress… so much so that after three weeks she's up walking and mobile again. They've decided to hold onto her in Dublin until she's back to 100% and so continue to bring her down for weekly visits and it’s a joy to work with her and her adopted owners for the time being. Another elderly lady came into the clinic today and spoke of the profound effect dogs have had on her life… Starting back in her early childhood when her father passed away when she was only 4… She stayed home from school and her mother began teaching her but the wrench of having eventually to go to school and a difficult relationship with her new teacher meant she still couldn't read by age 10. Her mam got a dog and this little girl struck up such a bond with the dog that she began to open up to the world again and was reading and writing in a relatively short space to time… Yeah I know lots of people will say it’s only a coincidence but for this lady the unconditional love she received from this dog was the start of a lifelong bonding with these magical creatures that enrich our lives in so many ways… So don't walk by your pet in the hall or kitchen and take them for granted… give them that big hug that they deserve. Timely reminders: Flea and tick treatments and don't forget vaccines need to be up to date if your pets are going into kennels. Enjoy the Summer… happy days! n

A local contributor looks at life today in Enniscorthy and beyond local electoral areaS The new local electoral areas will have a significant effect on the Enniscorthy area come the next local election. The current Enniscorthy area has 8 county councillors as follows: Keith Doyle of Enniscorthy town who is the new Chairman of Wexford Co. Council, Willie Kavanagh of Oylegate who is the Chairman of the District Council, Kathleen Codd Nolan, Ballycarney, BarbaraAnne Murphy, Bunclody, Paddy Kavanagh, Drumgoold, Johnny Mythen, Ballyorril, John O’Rourke, Enniscorthy town and Oliver Walsh of Blackwater. In the new setup the number of seats has been reduced to 6 and the area has also been changed. The new district effectively runs from Kiltealy to Bree, back to Ferns and on to Kilrush. Traditional Enniscorthy areas such as Edermine, Ballyhuskard etc have been hived off into the new 4-seat area of Kilmuckridge. This arrangement will see some of the present councillors in difficulty when the election arrives. None more so than Paddy Kavanagh of Fine Gael who effectively has his support base cut in two. His namesake, Willie Kavanagh of Fianna Fail, is in a similar position with his base also dissected by the new divi-

sions. The town-based members are largely unaffected and Kathleen Codd Nolan should not suffer too much. BarbaraAnne Murphy is probably relatively happy with the position. Oliver Walsh of course will stand in the new Kilmuckridge area which covers the entire area from Ballygarrett to Castleellis. Made for him you might say. Johnny Mythen shouldn’t suffer unduly either as he is effectively in the centre of the new district. Times ahead will be interesting as the parties and others with an interest in running next May will have to take the new realities into consideration before committing themselves to a gruelling election campaign. nama HealtHcare No, it’s not a new healthcare company for you and me. It’s something which I spotted in the annual report of this peculiar agency set up by the last Fianna Fail led government to sort out the property market. As we know, this body whose chairman is paid €250,000 a year and C.E.O. paid over €400,000 annually, is never far from controversy. Well back to the start. NAMA spent thousands of euro last year on health checks and health screening for their staff. Great employers you

Pic: ©Joseph Doyle

View from the Hill might say. I would say that too if they were spending their own money on these perks. But they’re not. That’s our money and it’s not that those working for NAMA are being paid the minimum wage. They are all, from top to bottom, well looked after and cossetted. Nice work if you can get it. I’m sure many thousands of people out there are wondering how do you get a job like that? I’ll leave that to your imagination. Fianna FÁil Selection convention The Fianna Fail Convention to select a candidate for the next general election is being held in

early July. The instruction from party headquarters is that two candidates only should be selected. One from the north of the county and one from the south. The candidate from the north is obviously James Browne the sitting T.D. with, up to now, a kind of presumption that Lisa McDonald of Wexford would emerge as the southern choice. The gender issue is a factor here as well as the fact that in the election of 2011 she came sixth in a five-seat election with an extremely good vote. As I wrote last month the thorny issue of New Ross electoral district not having any candidate since Sean Connick lost his

seat in 2011 is a difficult one for the party. The stronger possible candidate from there would have to be Michael Sheehan but inner Fianna Fail politics might dictate otherwise. There appears to be a serious lack of planning within Fianna Fail personnel in that area with three candidates splitting the vote and letting Lisa through on a strong vote from united Wexford district voters. H o w e v e r, t h i n g s h a v e changed somewhat, with Lisa stepping out of line at Wexford District Council level and refusing to support the parties mayoral pact which was agreed with Labour, Fine Gael and Ger Carthy, Independent. Lisa, rather than support George Lawlor for Deputy Mayor, after her colleague Tony Dempsey was elected Mayor with George’s support, actually voted for rival Independent Davy Hynes for the position. The vote was then 5/5 and the names went into a hat with George’s name being pulled out. My sources tell me that Fianna Fail is livid at Lisa for causing what could have been a huge upset. Fianna Fail believe that once the pact was agreed it should have been adhered to despite the fact that Lisa was not a member of the council at the time. She was co-

opted after the pact had been agreed on the death of the late popular Councillor Fergie Kehoe. Fianna Fail say that the fact that she is a member of the party means that she follows the rules. It’s difficult to see where she is going with this independent streak and as to how it will affect her support at convention. After all, if Fianna Fail nominate someone for the Dail and that person is elected they expect that the party whip will be followed without any splitting of hairs. Summer iS Here We often hear the comment, “Everything looks so much better in the fine weather”. Well that’s true. Enniscorthy in particular looks extremely good these days. The sunshine brings out the best in everyone. A special word of thanks must go to the Enniscorthy Tidy Towns group and the local council personnel who do so much to keep this town in the condition that it is in. They are out in bad as well as fine weather doing their thing and like everything else are not half appreciated. So well done to all. n We are often asked: Who is the “View from the Hill” columnist? All we can say is that the author’s surname is NOT Doyle!

The 'Mercedes-me Connect' infotainment system comes with a 12.3" screen and has plenty of functionality, but could do with some more modern graphics and can be a bit fiddly to use. Safety equipment includes Attention Assist and Active Brake Assist. There are three trim levels – Avantgarde, Exclusive and AMG Line – and numerous options to choose from. There’s space for five with large footwells in the rear - though a large transmission tunnel eats into legroom for the middle passenger, like in other rear wheel drive rivals. The boot at 540 litres is good for a large saloon like this. Automatic gearboxes across the range add to the affable nature of the E-Class. The launch of the E-Class in 2016 saw the arrival of a new four cylinder 2.0-litre diesel. In Ireland this 194hp model is badged E220d and it’s a big seller here for its combination of power and economy. Motor tax is just €200 per year. The E220d AMG Line model I tested has a list price

of €53,085. The E-Class is a smooth, effortless drive with an onus on comfort rather than sporty dynamics. Though it holds the road well with decisive steering, a BMW 5-Series is more fun in that regard. There are a number of driving modes including Sport and Sport+ modes that add urgency to the throttle response and make the car a bit tauter through bends. The Mercedes-Benz EClass cocoons its occupants in plenty of luxury, with striking refinement and comfort. The E220d offers an excellent balance between power, economy and value, and there are plenty of comfort features on board too. Late Wexford soldier awarded special honour for his service a Wexford soldier with a coveted career in the Defence Forces has been awarded a special honour. Post 9 of the irish united nations veterans association in athlone, co Westmeath, has been named after the late mick mccarth, a soldier from Drinagh in Wexford. the mick mccarth House was officially opened by minister with responsibility for Defence, Paul Kehoe. mr mccarth’s family and senior military management were present for the opening. The facilities in the house will be used for ex-soldiers to meet and

socialise and to find out relevant information about pensions and social welfare entitlements. Minister Kehoe paid tribute to Mr McCarth’s service to the Defence Forces. “Michael Mc Carth, known as ‘Mick’, was the first President of Post 9,” Minister Kehoe said. “Indeed, Mick passed away while holding the Office of President in 2010. Mick came from Drinagh, near Wexford Town... He joined the army in 1946 and won several All-Army Individual Gymnastic, Vicars Machine Gun and Gustaf Machine Gun awards during his

service,” he added. “Mick trained in the Curragh and served in Custume Barracks in the 6 Infantry Battalion and the Command Training Depot, Western Command,” Minister Kehoe said. “Mick was with the first Irish group to serve in the Congo and he also served three tours in Cyprus. Mick retired in the rank of Brigade Sergeant Major (BSM) and was one of the founder members of Post 9, IUNVA, Athlone, in 2009. Mick Mc Carth was clearly a man who gave outstanding service to the Defence Forces.”

Minister Kehoe paid tribute to the members of Post 9 and the wider veterans associations. “I am acutely conscious of the tremendous work done by this Post and the other 20 Posts in IUNVA in looking after Ex UN Veterans who have fallen on hard times. I’m also aware of your great work in visiting Veterans in local hospitals and hospices. I know you also render honours at the funerals of Ex UN Veterans. Thank you for your service.” n Brendan McCarth, brother of Mick, with Minister Paul Kehoe, as they remember Mick McCarth.

keeping An eye on tv one programme this week is definitely getting the Slaney news golden toiletbrush award for being such a crap tv show – at least it is in my opinion. it is the irish version of trailer trash. Yes folks i’m talking about that comedy husband and wife duo Bridget & eamon which is on tuesdays at 10.30pm on rte 2. Well what can I say? I watched a recent episode not in fits of laughter but in a rage. Anyway there wasn’t anything else on at the time so I said I’ll watch this for a bit and as they say it was like watching paint dry. Bridget had a bet with Eamon that they should do something together well needless to say Eamon (Bernard O’Shea) suggested camogie to Bridget (Jennifer Maguire, who is also the writer of the show). Well the match was a farce like the

show itself and very not funny. Somebody was stretchered off and Eamon came on as a sub – guess who’s wearing the pants in this relationship – well he came on with a woman’s blouse and skirt and Bridget had the camogie stick in the wrong hand with the fag in the side of her gob. Well the end involved Two Tribes Go To War by Frankie Goes to Hollywood. The end gag was Eamon running away from Bridget and his last line was ‘You’d suck at badminton Bridget’, then all hell broke loose and Bridget pulls out a starting pistol and screaming at Eamon, ‘ye fecker ye Eamon’. That was the only funny bit to see a grown man wearing his wife’s camogie skirt and her his badminton shorts – but it is still a ‘no, no’ for me. – Joseph Doyle

Apology…

Our apologies to Ciara Doran for a misprint in last month’s issue in relation to her recent wedding. Ciara’s surname appeared in error as “Tobin”. Megan Murphy is a young graduate filmmaker from Enniscorthy. Her film “His Life, His Pony and Me” recently won an IFTA award. Megan comes from a long line of storytellers and wants to carry on that tradition through her documentary making.

If you would like Joseph to mention an upcoming event or would like to send in pics of any occasion (weddings, birthdays, etc) for inclusion then email both doyleduffry@gmail.com and slaneynews@gmail.com. The closing date for receiving material for this column is always the Thursday before our publication date which is usually the first Weds of every month. Rackard League winners on 19th June the boys of St. aidan’s rackard league team were presented with their winners’ medals at a ceremony in the auditorium watched by proud parents, grandparents, teachers and other pupils. Principal Peter Creedon introduced proceedings saying how delighted the school were with the achievement and he thanked teachers Michael Doyle, John Ryan, Mel Doyle and John Culleton for the tremendous effort they are putting into the fostering and development of gaelic games at St. Aidan’s culminating in the marvellous 2018 Rackard League campaign. Principal Creedon had a special word for local club Rapparees/Starlights as he thanked Chairman Michael Doyle and members of the club

who attend at St. Aidan’s every Wednesday morning before school begins to do training sessions with the pupils. This in no uncertain terms is paying off, Mr. Creedon said, with ‘more students than ever getting involved in the games, it is a tremendous effort on behalf of the club and it still amazes me when I arrive early on Wednesday mornings and see so many exerting themselves so early in the day and long may it continue to bring success to both the school and the club’. Mr. Creedon called on Wexford county hurlers Matthew O’Hanlon, Kevin Foley and Harry Kehoe to each say a few words and present the medals. Kevin Foley as a member of the Rapparees/Starlights said how pleased he was to see the

progress being made and the work being done between club and school and he complimented all involved saying, ‘I look forward to seeing many of those receiving medals today become the stars of the future of both club and county’. Following the medal presentation, the Hurling 365 Flag was presented to Peter Creedon and Michael Doyle by Matthew, Kevin and Harry in recognition of the work being done between club and school. A marvellous achievement and a great source of pride for St. Aidan’s and all the teachers, coaches and families involved. Keep up the good work and remember – Tosach maith, leath na h-oibre or a good foundation is half the work. – maria nolan

Re-writing history in Enniscorthy

Hook Lighthouse, 2017 (Acrylic on Canvas H40xW40cm) by Martina Furlong Pic: Maria Nolan.

L-R: Barry Walsh, Ed Parker (44th Essex Regiment of the Napoleonic Society), Minister Paul Kehoe TD, Cllr Keith Doyle, James Browne TD, Liz Hore (Enniscorthy Municipal District Manager) and Ray Murphy.

the ethos of re-enactment is that you cannot re-write history, well on the weekend of 15th– 17th June it may not have been re-written on the streets of new ross or indeed on vinegar Hill but it was most certainly re-written in one of enniscorthy’s drinking establishments as we listened to redcoats from the 44th essex British napoleonic Society sing grace, Boolavogue and the Fields of athenry. Who would have thought even 20 years ago that this could happen in an Enniscorthy pub? These English visitors, who have been coming to our Reenactments now for several years are doing more for AngloIrish relations than any state visit ever could. On Friday evening 15th June at Market Square Major General Ed Parker of the 44th Essex joined Minister Paul Kehoe and Chairman Keith Doyle and laid wreaths at the Croppy Boy Monument in

memory of all who lost their lives in 1798. When our English friends first came to us in 2013 they knew little or nothing of our history and it was a shock for them to arrive for a re-enactment where they were cast as the victors but not the heroes. It’s a concept, difficult for us to understand, that they knew nothing of 1798 or Vinegar Hill – we Irish are a tiny blip in their history whilst they on the other hand are the cause of almost all of ours. On their second visit they told us they had a surprise for us and took our breaths away when they sang Boolavogue having spent time learning the air and the lyrics and the history behind it to sing it with feeling. And I have to say for us Enniscorthy Rebels it was one of those lump in the throat moments that you never forget. Now, as they demonstrated this weekend, they have a full

Irish repertoire – and how cool is that – we have come a long, long way and sure it’s only taken us 220 years!! Re-enactments may look silly to some but not only do they bring history to life they allow us to access a better understanding of each other and our different cultures through shared exchanges of our songs and stories. Throughout the weekend on t h e s t re e t s o f R o s s a n d Enniscorthy people had the chance to get up close and personal with the war and the warriors and what a worthwhile exercise in diplomacy for all of us to eat, drink, talk and sing together in this splendid atmosphere of re-enactment. Well done to all who participated especially the Mayo men under the dashing General Dunford, the splendidly kitted Kildare Militia wearing specially commissioned replica Kildare Militia uniforms as were worn on Vinegar Hill 220

years previously, under the meticulous command of Barry Walsh, the suave Cornelius de Sonnac and his band of merry Limerick rebels, the impressive John Joe Cullen and his motley Kilkenny crew, the dapper Tola Collier and his Ashbourne contingent and those from Offaly, Prosperous and various other parts and of course our very own Enniscorthy Historical Reenactment Society under the careful command of General Ray Murphy. My compliments to all and to both Councils, New Ross and Enniscorthy, and in particular our own Liz Hore, Rory O’Connor, Moira O’Gorman and Chairman Keith Doyle for making it all happen. It was a weekend of parade, passion and pageant of candour, colour and commemoration, of friendship, fire and feeling, of magic, memory and munificence and long may it all continue. – Maria Nolan

barcElona bEauty On Friday night 22nd June I had the immense pleasure of attending at Enniscorthy Library for the launch of local poet Paddy Kehoe`s third book of poems Places to Sleep. Paddy`s launches are always a pleasing experience with many Enniscorthy friends past and present gathered to celebrate one of the town`s major talents and June 22nd was made even more so by the fact that another of the town`s successful literary sons was on hand to officiate. Eamonn Wall, native of Market Square now residing in St. Louis, USA, where he is a Professor of Literature at the local university and a well known poet and a personal friend of Paddy`s since 1978 said that he was delighted and proud to launch Paddy`s third collection of poems which focus on the time Paddy spent in Barcelona teaching English from 1978 to 1980. Places to Sleep, Eamonn said, `like Paddy`s other collections is built on short lyric poems, related perhaps to Paddy`s other great talent as a songwriter, to his sense of the poet as a wandering troubadour, or even perhaps to his career in journalism where economy and style are great values`. `Barcelona’, Eamonn continued, ‘has a habit of attracting Irish writers including Paddy`s fellow Wexford authors Philip Casey and Colm Toibin, who met Paddy when he arrived in the city and showed him the ropes’. `Ours has been a deep, enduring, and for me, sustaining friendship over the years,` Eamonn said. `I have known Paddy for almost as long as I have been alive and such friendships are rare, sustaining and precious things. In addition to his friendship, I have cherished and admired his work as both a musician and writer. He is in the middle of a purple patch of writing songs and poems. Places to Sleep is his third volume of poetry to be published in the past seven years. With each new collection, his vision deepens, his dexterity with form grows and his observations sharpen. The beautiful poems in this book are images of Spain’s beauty, Wexford’s beauty and the beauties within. In Paddy Kehoe, we have a prophet of place who finds its secrets for us. We are most fortunate.’

`You won’t get a better endorsement than that,’ Paddy thanked his friend profusely, along with family and friends and Jarlath Glynn and Enniscorthy Library for its continued support of the arts and he brought the enjoyable evening to a pleasant conclusion reading The Guitar Player, Places to Sleep and Maria Encarnacion from the book. – Maria Nolan
