Summer Project

Fol lowing the introduct ion to basic CA D drawing sk il ls, I was to complete the following task during the summer break. This task f o r m e d t h e f i r s t a s s i g n m e n t f o r t h e s e c o n d y e a r m o d u l e A R 2 0 14 .

First I was to carry out a measured sur vey of the floor level in my apartment on which my bedroom is situated. I was to record each room/ landing dimensions, location and scale of door and window openings, stairs, cupboards etc.

Using the Sur vey data and drawings, I have produced a general layout plan of the floor of my apartment at 1:50 scale and

Site Measured Drawing

Each studio was working on a site during the first semester. I was to choose an area of the site that interests me. It could be a faรงade, a b o u n d a r y, a s p a c e o r l a n d s c a p e . I h a d t o r e c o r d t h e s u b j e c t u s i n g sketch drawings, photog raphy and a measured sur vey drawing.

I made a careful sketch study of the subject. I took time to capture the detail, scale and quality of the subject, capturing the material and for m, hierarchy of scale and proportion.

Then I was to draw up the elevation at 1:20 scale on A1 cart r i d g e p a p e r i n p e n c i l o n l y. T h e A 1 s h e e t h a s t o b e p o r t r a i t in for mat and the drawing has to be centred on the page.

Part B Own Work

Preparations & Task Division

Groups: 1. Metalworkers Responsible for design & delivery of all metal components and axel. 2. Support Structure/Stand Responsible for surveying the river, riverbed, sides/haunches, flow of water and fro support structure, design and realisation. 3. Wheel Responsible for taking delivery of the material, storage and liaison with the workshop, keeping the material safe and waterproofing. Responsible for the design and realization of the wheel

The studio was divided into three groups, 7-8 students each. My group was working on the support structure, stand and river bed conditions. Tasks were divided equally and everyone knew their job. As a studio, we discussed the location of the wheel and the method of construction. Making precise 1:20 models that explained the ideology and principles of the design. These models helped us justify the amount of material that had to be ordered, how the wheel is going to be constructed and moved to the site. From there we could start planning our component list, as well as drawing plans, elevations and story board.

Representation of a Stair

In this project I was to choose an existing stair or step of my interest. The subject has been photographed from different angles to capture the age, scale and material.

I was to study the way that light plays on the surface of the stair, the shadow cast by the for m and how the material alters i n d i f f e r e n t l i g h t c o n d i t i o n s a n d a t d i f f e r e n t t i m e s o f t h e d a y.

Using the sur vey data draw a plan and section

and drawings at 1:20 scale

I was to u s i n g C A D.

The selected subject of study is a staircase in the National Theatre.

Representation Of An Interior

In this assignment I was to identify a key space within my studio design project/building. T his space incor porates a staircase.

I was to make a 1:20 sale interior model of the space demonstrating spatial, material, tectonic and atmospheric qualities.

I was to take an interior photograph of the model that records the essence, scale and inhabitation of the space; considering how to represent the inhabitation and the way light penetrates the space.

Charcoal drawing is an atmospheric representation of the design, a representation of the tectonics and its inhabitation. The drawing captures not only the scape of the space and contents but focuses on the qualities of light and shadow contrast.
