Getting Fit
A
ging well and living well means having a good diet and getting regular exercise, both of which can be major factors in preventing and minimizing a variety of chronic conditions. Regular physical activity can help reduce the risk of obesity, cardiovascular diseases, arthritis, diabetes and osteoporosis. Everyone, regardless of their age and ability, can obtain health benefits from physical activity. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), recommends that older adults get 30 minutes a day of moderate-intensity aerobic activity (brisk walking) at least five days a week and muscle strengthening activities at least twice a week. People who are capable of more vigorous aerobic activity (running or jogging) need about 75 minutes a week. They also should engage in muscle strengthening activities that work all major muscle groups twice a week. Experts advise that the activity does not have to be done all at one time. If it works better to take 2, 15-minute walks than one 30-minute walk, by all means do so. Just keep the goal in mind. Page 12
BENEFITS Despite available information and research on the positive aspects of adopting healthy lifestyles, the CDC reports that 60 percent of older adults are inactive. Those who regularly engage in exercise may enjoy the following benefits: • Reduced risk of developing chronic diseases. • Improved cardiovascular system. • Reduced stress. Here Are 6 Tips To Help You Find The Best Foods For Your Body And Your Budget. 1. Know what a healthy plate looks like You might remember the food pyramid, but the USDA recently unveiled a simpler way to help people see what they should eat each day. It’s called MyPlate. The simple graphic shows exactly how the five food groups should stack up on your plate. These are the building blocks for a healthy diet. 2. Look for important nutrients Make sure you eat a variety of foods to get all the nutrients you need. Your plate should look like a rainbow – bright, colored foods are always the best choice! A healthy meal should include: • Lean protein (lean meats, seafood, eggs, beans) • Fruits and vegetables (think orange, red, green, and purple) • Whole grains (brown rice, whole wheat pasta) • Low-fat dairy (milk and its alternatives) • Remember to choose foods that are high in fiber and low in sodium or salt. Also, look for Vitamin D, an important mineral as we age. 3. R ead the Nutrition Facts label The healthiest foods are whole foods. These are often found on the perimeter of the grocery store in the produce, meat, and dairy sections.
When you do eat packaged foods, be a smart shopper! Read the labels to find items that are lower in fat, added sugars, and sodium. 4. U se recommended servings To maintain your weight, you must eat the right amount of food for your age and body. The American Heart Association provides recommended daily servings for adults aged 60+. 5. S tay hydrated: Water is an important nutrient too! Don’t let yourself get dehydrated – drink small amounts of fluids consistently throughout the day. Tea, coffee, and water are your best choices. Keep fluids with sugar and salt at a minimum, unless your doctor has suggested otherwise. 6. S tretch your food budget Want to get the biggest nutritional bang for your buck? The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) can help you afford healthy food when you need it. Over 4 million older Americans use SNAP to buy food, and the average senior receives $113 each month. Visit BenefitsCheckUp.org/getSNAP to see if the program can help you.

Oral Health for Older Adults: Quick Tips
Brush and floss your teeth every day. Brushing and flossing helps remove dental plaque, a sticky film of bacteria (germs). If plaque builds up on your teeth, it can cause cavities or gum disease. • Brush your teeth with fluoride toothpaste twice a day. Brush after breakfast and before bed. • Floss between your teeth every day. If flossing is hard for you, ask a dentist about using a special brush or pick instead.
Watch for changes in your mouth. Your risk of getting oral cancer increases as you get older. If you see any changes in your mouth, it’s important to get them checked out. See a doctor or dentist if you have any of these symptoms for more than 2 weeks: Taking care of your teeth and gums as you get older can prevent problems like toothaches, cavities (tooth decay), and tooth loss. A healthy mouth also makes it easier for you to eat well and enjoy food. It’s especially important to take care of your teeth and gums if you have a health condition like diabetes or heart disease – or if you are taking medicines that can cause oral health problems. Follow the steps below to keep your teeth and gums healthy as you get older.
• A spot in your mouth, lip, or throat that feels uncomfortable or sore • A new lump or thick area in your mouth, lip, or throat • A white or red patch in your mouth • Difficulty chewing, swallowing, or moving your jaw or tongue • Numbness or swelling in your mouth • Pain in one ear without hearing loss Reprinted from HealthCare.gov for full article go to https://goo.gl/HCnxvn

PICKELBALL
I
f you’ve driven by tennis courts lately, chances are you’ve seen people playing with what look like big ping pong paddles and thought to yourself, “What in the world …..?” Well, you’ve seen one of the newest sports on the court scene: Pickleball! Pickleball is a paddle sport created for people of all ages and skill levels to enjoy. It has simple rules that are easy to learn, which makes it ideal for beginners. Pickleball combines elements of badminton, ping pong, and tennis, and can be played indoors or outdoors. And the only equipment you need is the net (modified for pickleball), a paddle, and a plastic ball. It’s fast-paced and great exercise!
According to the U.S.A. Pickleball Association (USAPA), more than 100,000 people are now actively involved in pickleball, playing with friends and/or in leagues. And there are now pickleball facilities in all 50 U.S. states. School kids are likely playing it in PE classes already, and can help their moms and dads learn the game! And pickleball is a new sport at the National Senior Games this year. Invented in 1965 in Bainbridge Island, Washington, pickleball was the creation of three fathers whose kids were looking for a new summertime activity. They originally used hand-made equipment and developed simple rules. From those early days to now, pickleball has evolved into an internationally-growing sport,

with European and Asian countries adding courts and leagues. (According to legend, the game was named after the family dog, Pickles, who chased down the stray balls. This is a great story, but we admit it hasn’t been confirmed.)
THE COURT A pickleball court is the same size as a doubles badminton court, and the same court is used for singles and doubles. The net is set at 36” at the sidelines and 34” in the middle, and the court is striped (similar to a tennis court) with right and left service courts and a 7’ non-volley zone in front of the net (referred to as the ‘kitchen’). If you don’t have access to an official pickleball court, you can modify an existing tennis or badminton court.
EQUIPMENT Each player needs a pickleball paddle and a pickleball. The ball itself is unique, with holes through it like a wiffleball, and there are different ball models intended for indoor and outdoor play. The ball travels at a third of the speed of a tennis ball, and is usually white or yellow, although brightly-colored pickballs are gaining popularity.
You can wear just about anything that is comfortable for you, from athletic shorts to sweatpants, polo shirts to t-shirts. Comfortable tennis shoes are also important, and you may want to wear a hat or visor, safety glasses, and a sweatband.
According to the U.S.A. Pickleball Association (USAPA), more than 100,000 people are now actively involved in pickleball.

3 Essential Health Tips For Seniors 1. KEEP ACTIVE. Do something to keep fit each day – something you enjoy that maintains strength, balance and flexibility and promotes cardiovascular health. Physical activity helps you stay at a healthy weight, prevent or control illness, sleep better, reduce stress, avoid falls and look and feel better, too.
2. EAT WELL. Combined with physical activity, eating nutritious foods in the right amounts can help keep you healthy. Many illnesses, such as heart disease, obesity, high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, and osteoporosis, can be prevented or controlled with dietary changes and exercise. Calcium and vitamin D supplements can help women prevent osteoporosis.
3. STAY UP-TO-DATE on immunizations and other health screenings. By age 50, women should begin mammography screening for breast cancer. Men can be checked for prostate cancer. Many preventive screenings are available. Those who are new to Medicare are entitled to a “Welcome to Medicare” visit and all Medicare members to an annual wellness visit. Use these visits to discuss which preventative screenings and vaccinations are due. Low Impact Can Be Highly Effective
A
couple of weeks ago as I sat in a doctor’s waiting room for a routine checkup, I found myself mesmerized by a television show that featured “extreme low impact exercises” for seniors. As I watched, I began thinking of my own 94-year-old mother, who doesn’t go to bed at night until she has done her leg lifts, arm circles, ankle rotations, and back stretches. Maybe one reason my mom is a hale and healthy 94 is because she has always – always – been one to exercise. The TV show’s host was talking about the benefits of regular exercise, which we all know: lower blood pressure, better balance and flexibility, reduced stress, stronger muscles, better cardiovascular health. She listed nine low impact movements/exercises that everyone can do: RIDE A BIKE – Use a stationary bike or an outdoor bike, whichever works best for you (and the weather). Your heart and joints will appreciate it! WALK – Even if it’s just up and down the hallway, walking is by far the most popular and least expensive low impact workout for seniors. SWIM – Whether you swim laps, do water aerobics, or just walk in the pool with the water as resistance, you can go for hours without injury while getting a great (and enjoyable) workout. LIFT WEIGHTS – You may think that weight lifting is just for the younger set,
but even using one-pound hand weights while you walk will help fight bone density loss and increase your strength. (Talk with your doctor or a trainer to determine what program you should follow.) DO YOGA – Yoga is fabulous exercise that will help increase flexibility and improve circulation, not to mention aid in relaxation. STRETCH – Take it slow, stretching every joint and muscle. This is not only good for your flexibility, but it will help you avoid injuries. WORK OUT WITH WATER AEROBICS – Like swimming, water aerobics are easy on your body. Most classes provide great social interaction, too! WORK IN THE GARDEN – Plant, weed, water, and harvest … all these involve bending, lifting, pushing, and pulling. And you’ll reap the benefits in more ways than one! SEATED MOVEMENT – If you need to stay in a chair to exercise, work on joint flexibility by working your wrists, ankles, knees, legs, hips, shoulders, neck, and lower back. Active seniors are more likely to enjoy a long and healthy life. As always, if you are considering starting or increasing your exercise program, even if it’s going to be an “extreme low impact” program, consult with your physician first. Here are some healthy aging tips that are good advice at any stage of life: • Stay physically active with regular exercise. • Stay socially active with friends and family and within your community. • Eat a healthy, well-balanced diet — dump the junk food in favor of fiber-rich, low-fat, and lowcholesterol eating.
• Don’t neglect yourself: Regular check-ups with your doctor, dentist, Page 72
and optometrist are even more important now. • Take all medications as directed by your doctor. • Limit alcohol consumption and cut out smoking. • Get the sleep that your body needs.
