PREVENTION & DIAGNOSIS

PREVENTION & DIAGNOSIS

Our goal is to first do everything we can to help people in the community find ways to prevent and detect cancer early. Since the best protection against cancer is prevention and awareness, we are committed to offering several programs including free screenings, family-risk evaluations and educational classes. For many forms of cancer, detection at an early stage greatly increases the likelihood that treatment will be successful. Unfortunately, there is no single test that can accurately diagnose cancer. Once a potential concern has been diagnosed, a complete medical history is analyzed, and a physical examination is performed. Diagnostic procedures may include bone marrow aspiration and biopsy, ultrasound, tumor biopsy, bone scan, X-ray, computed tomography scan, MRI or possibly surgery.

A TEAM APPROACH

A TEAM APPROACH

At the Littman Cancer Center, we treat our patients with respect, warmth, compassion and understanding. Working from a team approach, care is coordinated within an interdisciplinary team of medical professionals. The patient works closely with caregivers to make informed decisions for personalized care. Beginning with the patient’s first visit and continuing through treatment and recovery, the SLCH team is there with hands outstretched to lend support and guidance. In addition to a patient’s own personal physician, the cancer care team may include an oncologist, radiologist, radiation oncologist, pathologist, surgeon, nurse, nutritionist, pain medicine specialist and clinical social worker.

TOMOTHERAPY

TOMOTHERAPY

Cancer can’t hide from TomoTherapy. TomoTherapy Hi-Art treatment system calculates the appropriate pattern, position and intensity of the radiation beamlets to be delivered based on the doctor’s prescribed dose. Although dosage will vary depending on the type and location of the tumor, TomoTherapy treatment typically involves a daily application of radiation for several weeks.

TomoTherapy Machine Having a TomoTherapy treatment is similar to having a CT scan or X-ray. Upon arriving at the Center, the patient is taken to the TomoTherapy treatment room, where a radiation therapist helps the patient onto a platform on the Hi-Art system known as the couch. The couch moves through the machine once to activate the CTrue imaging, which enables the radiation therapist to finetune the patient’s position by making small couch adjustments. The couch moves through a second time, more slowly, as the system delivers the daily treatment.
