encourage your student to:
∙∙Bring only the essentials, as space in residence halls is limited. Bring clothes that can be layered, Iowa experiences all four seasons. Extra-long sheets are needed in the residence halls (36” x 80”). ∙∙Participate in the Welcome Week Activities. It’s a great way to learn about involvement opportunities and meet new friends. ∙∙Stay Safe! Lock their doors at all times, and walk with friends at night. ∙∙Make healthy choices about alcohol--excessive alcohol consumption is often involved in cases of assault and violence. ∙∙Check out the Student Health Service website www.uiowa.edu/~shs for health care providers before your student gets sick.

advice during the first year can be found at
www.uiowa.edu/admissions/undergrad/orientation/parents.htm
Your student’s first semester midterms can be stressful.
∙∙Encourage them to communicate with professors, ask questions and get help. Their academic advisor can help with resources available. ∙∙Help them with time management — buy them a planner, they have a lot of free time between 8am and 3pm, and need to use it wisely. Suggest they schedule study and text reading times. ∙∙Help them learn the importance of balancing their social time and schoolwork, procrastination and getting behind can be a problem.

∙∙Conflicts with roommates usually come from different preferences, values and habits. Encourage open communication. ∙∙Tolerance of differences is key in getting along. Advise your son or daughter to give the same respect to their roommate they expect. New relationships have their ups and downs.
