T hi s body of work continues my ongoing inte rest in hi stor ical ar t re fe re nces a s well a s a ‘Collage” approach to my composition s. D un lop contextua lis es his work in to day’s world of ‘fa ke ne ws’ and p ost-inter net ar t by addressing t he Wester n ar t t radit ion wit h irony. He adheres to a cr itical approach bas ed on an aest het ic dis cours e t hat employs abstrac t ar t as a resp ons e to dig it a l te chnolog y. His resp ons e to t he chaos conf ront ing us to day is to go back to t he old-s cho ol order of paint and canvas, using col lage and f ragment ation to e voke t he digit a l mi lieu’s over s aturat ion of images. His o euvre has e volved f rom cre ating obs er vational-bas e d work and st i l l lifes to f igures in lands cap e. E arly on, his work compr is ed monument al heroic f igures painted in war m colours and b old gestural strokes. His recent work, in cont rast, us es less str uc tured, lo os er for ms. The fo c us is not on t he f inished painting but in t he pro cess an honest and aut hentic engagement wit h mater iality. He combines t he for mal elements, ‘mashing t hem toget her… extending t heir vo cabu lar y,’ Dunlop explains. The ar t ist g rapples wit h comp osition, colour, line, shap e, tone, texture and exp ansive sp ace, pushing and pu lling, adding and removing, paint ing over, and drag ging and blur r ing paint, unt i l he fe els t he completed work ‘ visually re ver ts or hums…’

Whethe r it be dramatic and awe in spir ing or a more subtle manoe uv re wate r invar iably ha s its way.
