This painting depicts designs associated with the lake site of Wilkinkarra (Lake Mackay). I n m y t h o l o g i c a l t i m e s t w o a n c e s t r a l Ti n g a r i m e n t r a v e l l e d t o W i l k i n k a r r a f r o m t h e s o a k a g e water site of Marawa in the west. When the men arrived at Wilkinkarra they lit a large fire ti flush out the malu (kangaroo). They then entered the eart and continued their travels e a s t . T h i s s t o r y f o r m s p a r t o f t h e T I n g a r i c y c l e . S i n c e e v e n t s a s s o c i a t e d w i t h t h e Ti n g a r i Cylcle are of a secret nature, no further detail was given.

This painting depicts designs associated with the claypan and soakage water site of Ta n y i n k i , w h i c h i s s l i g h t l y n o r t h o f t h e N y i r r p i C o m m u n i t y. T h e l i n e s i n t h i s p a i n t i n g represent the surrounding tali (sandhills). A group of ancestral women camped here performing the dances and singing the songs associated with the area. Upon completion of the ceremonies at this site the women continued their travels east. As the women travelled they gathered a variety of bush foods including kampurarrpa berries, (desert raisin) from the small shrub Solan um centrale, and pura (bush tomato) from the plant Solanum chippendalei. Kampurarrpa berries can be eaten directly from the plant but are sometimes ground into a paste and cooked on the coals as a type of d a m p e r.

In ancestral times a man of the Tjakamarra kinship subsection travelled to this site from the west carrying the Fire Dreaming. Wilkinkarra is also associated with L a r u l a r u n y a , a s p e c i e s o f s n a k e w h o h a d t r a v e l l e d f r o m M t We d g e t o t h e l a k e , w h e r e is escaped the fire by travelling underground to Nyinmi. This snake was assisted in his escape by clouds of water which dampened the full force of the fire.

D u r i n g a n c e s t r a l times a larger group of women gathered at the site to perform the dances and sing the songs associated with the area. While in the area the women also gathered the edible berries known as kampurarrpa or desert raisin from the small shrub Solanum centrale. These berries can be eaten straight from the bush but are sometimes ground into a paste and c o o k e d i n t h e c o a l s t o f o r m a k i n d o f d a m p e r. U p o n c o m p l e t i o n o f t h e c e r e m o n i e s a t Ngaminya the women continued their travels east to Wirrulnga and then on to Wilkinkarra (Lake Mackay). The rocky outcrops at Ngaminya are said to have been formed from huge mounds of these berries.

When the ngintaka died, it tmned to stone and became the mountain, a very prominent landmark next to the Ki n t o r e c o m m u n i t y. This painting depicts designs associated with the travels of an old woman, Ku t u n g k a N a p a n a n g k a , f r o m t h e w e s t . T h e r o u n d e l s in this painting depict the soakages at these sites. She then travelled further east to Muruntji, south-west of Mt. Liebig. At Muruntji she was accosted by one of a group of boys so she chased them and caught all but the culprit who managed to escape. She killed the others and cooked them in a fire. She then travelled to Kaltarra where she entered the earth.

This painting depicts designs associated with the rockhole site of Tjutalpi, east of the Ki w i n - k u r a c o m m u n i t y. I n a n c e s t r a l t i m e s a g r o u p o f m e n a n d w o m e n t r a v e l l e d t o t h i s site to perform ceremonies. While at Tjutalpi they performed the dances and songs associated with the area. During their travels the men and women gathered a variety of bush foods including pura or bush tomatoes (Solanum chippendalei) and kampurarrpa or desert raisins (Solanum centrale). They also gathered wood for the manufacture ofwana (digging sticks). The roundels in the work represent the soakage waters found at this site.

I n a n c e s t r a l t i m e s two snakes travelled to this site from the east, only to find there was no water there. The lightning at the site wanted the snakes to leave the area so began spearing the ground. This caused the snakes to borrow deep into the ground which then created a l a r g e c l a y p a n a n d s o a k a g e s w h i c h r e m a i n a t t h e s i t e t o d a y.

In this painting the artist has painted designs associated with the rockhole of Kalipinpa, a major water dreaming site north of Sandy Blight Junction. In ancestral times a huge storm erupted in this area causing the lightning to flash and the water to rush across the land, filling the rockholes and forming small creeks. The painting depicts the ceremonial country of the area with various landforms such as sandhills, hills, rockholes, soakages and creeks. There are many dreamings associated with the s i t e i n c l u d i n g w a t e r, l i g h t n i n g a n d b u s h p o t a t o . A g r o u p o f a n c e s t r a l m e n a n d w o m e n also once gathered at this rockhole to perform the dances and sing the songs associated with the area.

While at Marrapinti the women made the nose bones, also known as marrapinti, which are worn through a hole made in the nose web... but are now only inserted by the older generation on ceremonial occasions. As the women continued their travels they gathered the edible berries known as kampurarrpa or desert raisin from the small shrub Solanum centrale. These berries can be eaten directly f r o m t h e p l a n t o r g r o u n d i n t o a p a s t e a n d c o o k e d o n t h e c o a l s a s a t y p e o f d a m p e r.

I n a n c e s t r a l t i m e s t w o Ti n g a r i M e n o f t h e T j u n g u r r a y i a n d T j a p a l t j a r r i k i n s h i p s u b s e c t i o n s c a m p e d a t this site and gathered mungilypa. The seeds from this plant are ground into a paste which is then cooked in the coals to form a type of unleavened bread.

G e n e r a l l y, t h e Ti n g a r i a r e a g r o u p o f a n c e s t r a l b e i n g s o f t h e D r e a m i n g w h o t r a v e l l e d o v e r v a s t s t r e t c h e s o f t h e c o u n t r y, p e r f o r m i n g r i t u a l s a n d c r e a t i n g a n d s h a p i n g p a r t i c u l a r s i t e s . T h e Ti n g a r i m e n w e r e u s u a l l y f o l l o w e d b y Ti n g a r i w o m e n a n d w e r e accompanied by novices, and their travels and adventures are enshrined in a number of song cycles. These ancestral stories form part of the teachings of the post initiatory youths today as well as providing explanations for contemporary customs.
