Nights to Remember
IN ANOTHER LIFE, I WAS A CLUB KID. It seems like such a distant memory to this bird-watching mother of three, but it’s true — I spent most of my early 20s going out dancing once or twice a week. First in Orlando and then Los Angeles, we would hit up a club until last call and then head with the crew to an afterparty or 24-hour diner.
While I no longer start my evenings at 10 p.m. and just the thought of a Red Bull gives me a headache, I still love a good night out! And with all the growth and innovation in Oklahoma City over the past several years, its nightlife wasn’t left behind. In this month’s cover story, we highlight ways to have fun in OKC after dark — no matter what season of life you are in. We worked with local influencers to provide inspiration for a girls’ night, date night or family fun night on the town. Starting on page 33, you will find glamorous locations and food, drink, activity and fashion suggestions. There is something for everyone, just in time for a summer of memories!
Also in this issue we are excited to introduce you to Jabee Williams’ plans (there is probably no introduction needed for Jabee himself, one of OKC’s most admired local celebrities, musicians and activists) for a Juneteenth celebration open to all (pg.18), and also to a young ballet prodigy blowing people’s minds (pg.78).
Additionally, you will find our stunning summer season Home special section, featuring artistic and bold design and entertaining ideas (pg.28).
For the majority of this issue’s execution I was out of the office on maternity leave, returning to work around the time this hits newsstands and mailboxes.
I am so thankful to Kaley Regas, Kaylin Hill and the rest of the 405 Magazine team for keeping the ball rolling while I was out bringing my beautiful baby into the world. You know your job is a great fit when you can’t wait to start again.
I hope this finds you gearing up for a hot summer of adventure!

An American Celebration
Jabee Williams and Juneteenth
BY KRISTEN GRACE | PHOTOS BY CHARLIE NEUENSCHWANDER

Festival on Saturday, June 5
Located on NE rd St., between Hood and Kellum
JABEE WILLIAMS, OKLAHOMA
hip-hop artist, actor and activist, began planning Juneteenth celebrations almost by accident in 2020. Although Juneteenth is a federal holiday celebrating the news of freedom for enslaved people in the United States after the Civil War, its history is not taught in most schools. “My mom taught me about Juneteenth as a kid,” Williams said. “We always celebrated, even if it was a cookout with friends and family. It doesn’t just belong to one group — this is American history, and I want everyone to know and celebrate with us now.”
Juneteenth celebrations had been happening in our state for years. Williams remembered, “Washington Park had one that has been going on for years, and when I was a kid, there was one on 23rd
by the library. But in 2020, things were shut down for COVID.” He and some friends threw a block party to celebrate the holiday, and that’s when he realized that he could continue to organize these celebrations in his neighborhood on NE 23rd every year. In 2021, Williams began calling in hip-hop musicians and friends, asking them to join him in a concert and festival for Juneteenth. “We try to bring in artists that have never been to Oklahoma before, that you might have to go to Dallas or Atlanta to see.”
Williams and the committee have received offers to host the event in other places, but he said it was important to him to center the celebration in Oklahoma City’s Eastside community. “When you have a community that has been deprived of so many things, underfunded, under-resourced, food apartheid, one event can raise the economic value and morale of a community.”
In addition to the concert, Juneteenth includes the creation of a permanent mural for the commu-
nity every year as well as a K run the day before. Williams is excited about the success of the K and how it has grown over the past few years. “We have 800 runners already signed up for the K. To see 800 people running through the east side of OKC, and people coming out on their porches to wave and cheer — that’s transformative. It gives you a sense of community and changes the landscape in a good way.”
This family-friendly festival has activities for children, and Williams specifies that all are welcome. “On the committee, we have a lot of people of all races working together to plan this. This is not just for Black people, but for everyone. It’s so wonderful to go to an event where there are a sea of people who don’t look like one another, but they are all there to celebrate the same thing: the freedom and liberation of a group of people.”

Dealing With Dementia
Expert advice on what to do after a tough diagnosis
BY LAVINIA CRESWA
THERE ARE FEW THINGS SCARIER to hear from your doctor than the words “It’s dementia.” Dementia is a general term for individuals experiencing a loss in at least two brain functions, one usually being memory loss, with its most common form being Alzheimer’s Disease. With over 10 million new cases of dementia diagnosed every year, there is an unfortunately strong chance that someone you love may be on the receiving end of those life-changing words. We all forget things, so how do you know when it is time to seek medical care? Physician Assistant Katie Dickey said, “What people need to be aware of is the lack of executive functioning that comes with dementia. If you notice someone seems less organized or is having trouble managing bills, those can be red fl ags. If they suddenly need a recipe for the sheet cake they have baked from memory for the last 30 years, it can be a sign of cognitive decline.”
Dickey knows from experience, as her own mother was diagnosed at the age of 8 with a rare form of dementia called corticobasal degeneration. “My mom’s handwriting changed from a loopy cursive to a block print. When she would write my sister and I notes, she used to make a cat face in the M of Mom, but we noticed she stopped doing that, too.”
Dickey said to fi rst go to your primary care physician to have routine labs done. Other conditions like an undiagnosed UTI, pneumonia, diabetes or even a vitamin B12 deficiency can mimic dementia. Seeing a neurologist or a neuropsychologist is necessary for an actual diagnosis. If it is a form of dementia, Dickey recommended having some hard conversations … and soon. “You have to keep an open, ongoing conversation,” she said. “You’re not going to solve all that goes into taking care of a person living with dementia in one day. You need to evaluate whether they are safe in where they are living.
If they’re not, then you need to have a conversation about how they would like to live.”
In many cases, a spouse turns into a full-time caretaker, which can be taxing and stressful. One option would be to have a home care company come to assist with showering, cooking and other daily activities so they are able to both stay in their home. Another option is to move into an assisted living facility.
Dickey is administrator and one of the founders of Legacy Senior Living, two assisted living facilities at 600 NW 12th St. in OKC. “I created the home I wish had been available for my mom,” she noted. “A lot of people don’t want to go into assisted living because they think it will be like a nursing home, but there is a huge difference.”
In assisted living like Legacy, patients are able to move from a home, into a home. While there are only seven bedrooms in each home, the facility is approved to have 10 residents, so couples can both move in and stay together, even if only one person has been diagnosed. Medical care is provided on site through the point of needing hospice so that patients are able to “age in place.”
Having community can be benefi cial, and there are local resources available including
Villages OKC and the Alzheimer’s Association of Oklahoma City. There is also a support group called Moving Mom and Dad, which takes place at Crossing’s Church. Though a dementia diagnosis is overwhelming and sad, making decisions early as a family will ease some stress in the future.
Dickey has one additional piece of advice: Check in frequently on your aging parents. “It’s really important that you see your parents as often as possible. You don’t want to find out things have changed and be forced to have a huge discussion in one weekend.” She suggests the book How to Say It to Seniors by David Solie as an introductory resource for these tough conversations.

Reflecting on intellectual and athletic experiences rooted in Greece
BY EVIE KLOPP HOLZER

STYLED BY BRITTA NEWTON-TARRON
THE IMPENDING SUMMER GAMES INSPIRED THIS curation of history-making photos, prized articles and personal travel mementos, transporting us to another time and honoring the birthplace of the Olympics. Medals may mark a competitive win, but the biggest “wins” may come from within. Mental and physical strengths propel us forward. Balancing intellect with athleticism, Olympic images dating back to the 130s are displayed alongside books, including Homer’s The Odyssey. Speaking of books, stylist Britta Newton-Tarron hints to her time studying art history, language and Greek mythology at Deree — the American College of Greece. The blue journal and Aphrodite bust recall her adventure, summer days fi lled with beauty and love. Viewing all pieces together, we see a celebration of the human experience: the striving, the growing, the achieving. Soon, all genders, races and nationalities will convene in Paris for the 2024 Olympics. From antiquity to modern times, the torch is carried on. We watch in wonder, and cheer on humanity.

Covington sets a festive summer table with global collectibles and family heirlooms. Scandinavian chairs by Hans Wegner and Palm Beach Regency-style wicker chairs with Schumacher cushions await guests. Hand-painted ceramic Italian restaurant plates layer perfectly with MATCH Pewter chargers, French napkin rings and English vintage napkins. Covington’s family heirlooms — all from England — include the flatware, golden-detailed glasses and a silver tea set. Covington has a passion for floral design, as reflected in her eye-catching arrangement of peonies, ranunculus, poppies and lenten roses. She also adores quality rugs; this dining room features a handtied Indian wool rug sourced from Tabriz. The French chandelier and bistro table come from her mother’s store, Covington Antique Market, which served collectors well on Western Avenue for 20 years. Much like the upcoming Olympics, this setting celebrates a time and place where countries converge. Mexican shot glasses, French Moet Champagne and American Silver Oak cabernet sauvignon inspire a toast: To the world’s best … let the games begin.

Winning designs define a Stillwater family home
BY EMILY PAYNE
BY EMILY HART
WHEN MATT AND LESLEE HOLLIDAY DECIDED TO move back to Stillwater, they reached out to Gary Gardner of Gary Gardner Homes, and Amber McCullough of Amber McCullough Design. Matt, a Stillwater native, knew them both from childhood — Gardner was one of his teachers, and McCullough was a classmate.
Speaking of these connections, McCullough said, “That’s just the kind of people Matt and Leslee are; they are going to support their people.” And “their people” certainly delivered: In 2022, the Hollidays moved their family of four children and four dogs into a stunning contemporary house.
The Hollidays are a baseball family with an impressive legacy. From 2004-2018, Matt was an outfielder for several MLB teams: the Colorado Rockies, the Oakland Athletics, the St. Louis Cardinals and the New York Yankees. He’s a seven-time All-Star with four Silver Sluggers, and he won a World Series Championship in 2011 with the Cardinals. Leslee works for Pro Athletes Outreach, a Christian organization that creates fellowship opportunities for athletes and their families. Although baseball has taken the family across the country, it has always rooted them in Oklahoma. Matt’s father, Tom, coached baseball at Oklahoma State University for 26 years. Currently, Matt and his brother Josh both coach at OSU. Matt and Leslee’s sons, Jackson and Ethan, are also embarking on promising baseball careers.

In the main living space, furniture from Verellen exudes a quiet luxury, while a small-scale piece of art in the recessed niche above the fireplace creates an unexpected focal point.

Bold geometric printed wallpaper by Gucci pairs perfectly with silk velvet throw pillows and a Snoopy lounge chair by Eleanor Rigby in this fun and funky bedroom.
The family’s love of the game is evident both outside and inside their Stillwater home. To facilitate practice, the Hollidays added some unique amenities to their property: A wiffle ball field sits proudly beside the residence, and a converted barn contains an indoor batting cage. Within the house, framed jerseys hang in a media room, a basket of baseballs sits atop a coffee table and rows of bats, hats and gloves are artfully arranged on built-in shelves. In one bedroom, a vibrant painting of Matt at bat inspires the color palette. Wooden baseball bats halved and arranged in a linear pattern serve as a focal point, and a leather accent pillow with woven stitching is reminiscent of a baseball glove.
Above all else, Leslee and Matt wanted to create a welcoming, comfortable and inviting home where they could extend hospitality, host Bible studies and entertain guests. Leslee had complete faith that McCullough would execute their vision beautifully. She delivered, creating functional spaces with timeless design and understated elegance.
Outside, the two-tiered pool and fully equipped outdoor kitchen provide plenty of space for hosting and entertaining. Inside, luxurious, durable furniture and finishes in calming neutrals create a relaxed atmosphere. In the kitchen, a variety of textures adds visual interest. A Venetian plaster vent hood, alabaster and brass pendants, drapery and glass-front metal cabinets all combine exquisitely. A powder bath goes bold with a dynamic black-and-white quartzite slab and tiger-print Gucci wallpaper; a whimsical surprise likely to delight guests. The Hollidays couldn’t be happier with their house; they love the layout, the design and most of all what it provides — the ability to host so many people and gather close to friends and family in this place that they call home.

MY HUSBAND RYAN AND I are honored to call Oklahoma City our home. Our date night purpose has quickly become an opportunity to expose some of the city’s hidden gems for our social media audience to discover and enjoy, while still making a point to keep the outing and time centered on what’s important for us: our connection. Here are some of our recommendations for having fun, while still maintaining that “date night coziness” we like to look for in curating the perfect romantic memories in downtown OKC.
Dinner: The perfect date night for us starts at Stock and Bond (The rolls they serve when you arrive are soooo fresh and pillowy soft!) We like to indulge in the jumbo shrimp cocktail and craft burgers or juicy steaks.
Drinks: Tellers – our favorite place for drinks (and appetizers!)
Activities: Watch the OKC Ballet perform at the Civic Center Music Hall (We love to embrace the romance of the dance.)

AS A MOM OF THREE and one on the way, I have started to step into my role as a local expert for the best things to do to create lasting memories with a family in the metro. Our herd loves to have fun, so we often seek out opportunities to immerse our kids into different culinary adventures. I also make a point of recommending to other families and loved ones those local spots that have the best team or staff for supporting experiences for little ones, as that can truly push a fun time together to a whole new level. From our family to yours, here’s our list, OKC:
Dinner: Oso Paseo, Tamashii Ramen, The patio at Riserva Tapas Bar, Jones Assembly
Dessert: Domenico, Boom Town Creamery, Katiebug’s Sips and Sweets
Activities: The Oklahoma City Zoo, Science Museum Oklahoma, The Oklahoma City Museum of Art (It has a brand-new kids room!), Thunder games at the Paycom Center (It has a new quiet room that makes the game sensory friendly!), USA Softball Hall of Fame

WITH BEING A FASHION LOVER and content creator here in Oklahoma City, style is at the forefront of almost everything I do, and that doesn't stop with curating the perfect Girls Night. Photos of highlights are always a must, and this aspect is taken into account when choosing an ambiance for dinner and drinks, while the activity is dependent on my chosen footwear for the night. Here’s my list of OKC favorites for a Girls Night to remember. Hope you enjoy these recommendations!
Dinner: Culprits (also a great spot for brunch with the girls — try the asparagus), Broadway (for the perfect ambiance and steak) and Ramsay’s Kitchen (Wear a classy outfit and order the Parker Rolls as an appetizer!)
Drinks: O Bar at the Ambassador Hotel and Flamingo Tiki Lounge in the Paseo (Both have a great drink selection, great atmospheres and great music, too.)
Activities: Movie Night at Flix Brewhouse OKC (Dine in or grab dessert during your movie.) or renting a bay at Topgolf (best for fi nger foods and mingling with your tribe)

Your Guide to Local Attorneys and Practices
WHEN YOU NEED AN ATTORNEY, YOU WANT SOMEONE WITH a strong reputation and a proven track record. The annual Top Attorneys list provides the names of the 405 area’s attorneys recommended by their colleagues. DataJoe Research conducted an extensive peer-review survey asking established local attorneys to name top practitioners in their particular fields. The 2024 list contains over 400 top attorneys listed alphabetically and sectioned by specialty area.

TOP ATTORNEYS
2024
Summary. To create the list, the magazine contracted DataJoe Research to facilitate an online peer-voting process and Internet research process. DataJoe Research is a software and research company specializing in data collection and verification, and conducts various nominations across the United States on behalf of publishers. To create the list, DataJoe Research facilitated an online peer-voting process. We paired this with an Internet research process to identify success characteristics. DataJoe checked and confirmed that each published winner had, at time of review, a current, active license status with the appropriate state regulatory board. If we were not able to find evidence of a lawyer's current, active registration with the state regulatory board, that lawyer was excluded from the list. In addition, we checked available public sources to identify lawyers disciplined for an infraction by the state regulatory board. These entities were excluded from the list. Finally, DataJoe presented the tallied result to the magazine for its final review and adjustments.
Final note. We recognize that there are many good lawyers who are not shown in this representative list. This is only a sampling of the huge array of talented professionals within the region. Inclusion in the list is based on the opinions of responding lawyers in the region. We take time and energy to ensure fair voting, although we understand that the results of this survey nomination and Internet research campaign are not an objective metric. We certainly do not discount the fact that many, many good and effective lawyers may not appear on the list.
Disclaimers. DataJoe uses best practices and exercises great care in assembling content for this list. DataJoe does not warrant that the data contained within the list are complete or accurate. DataJoe does not assume, and hereby disclaims, any liability to any person for any loss or damage caused by errors or omissions herein whether such errors or omissions result from negligence, accident, or any other cause. A Crowning Culinary Achievement
Eric Smith aims to excite taste buds and entertain guests
BY MATT KIROUAC
PHOTOS BY RACHEL MAUCIERI
CHEF ERIC SMITH MAKES QUITE an impression. An industry veteran, whose seasoned resume spans 13 years cooking in Chicago and a seminal stint under culinary godfather Kurt Fleischfresser at the bygone Coach House Restaurant, the chef commands a dining room as well as he commands a kitchen, with a charisma as vibrant as his globe-trotting dishes. It’s that charm, coupled with his outside-the-box artistry, that’s endeared him to local diners for years, all culminating with his culinary coronation: The Crown.
Upon his return to Oklahoma City, Smith cemented a name for himself with The Crown Room, a clandestine concept marked by ever-changing tasting menus for in-the-know diners. Along with Pachinko, a Japanese-inflected concept that operated out of Parlor Food Hall and as a standalone brick and mortar in Nichols Hills, The Crown Room is what Smith became known for — that and the choose-your-own-adventurestyle tasting menus spotlighting the inventive stylings of one of the city’s most imaginative, dexterous chefs.
The format, previously nestled within VZDs, became his bread and butter. So much so that he decided to rebrand Nichols Hills’ Pachinko at 7204 N. Western Ave. into, simply, The Crown, offering a full-service restaurant — and a permanent home for The Crown Room hidden within it. Full-steam since late February, The Crown is the most accessible version of Smith’s efforts to date, offering a la carte dishes, customizable tasting menus, date night degustations, a convivial bar setting and a tucked-away dining room adorned with Asian art.
DINING
66 JUNE 2024
Spread at The Crown (from top left, clockwise): butter-poached lobster cake, Chilean sea bass two ways, The Crown Caesar, blueberry-honey cake, and filet
“We made a decision to change the name because everyone knows me from The Crown Room,” said Smith, who also used the name change to pivot into a wider pool of influences: “I do a good bit of Asian food, however, one of the reasons to change was to become more international. I spent 11 years cooking Italian food, and I’ve folded that into the mix. I’m trained in French cooking. Even at Pachinko, we were almost a French restaurant hiding behind an Asian cloak.”
Now, unbound by cloaks and borders, he’s sourcing sole from markets in the Asian District, heaping butter-poached lobster cakes with tempura rice noodles and miso-saffron mayo, cooking Chilean sea bass two ways (curry-crusted and tempura-fried) and gilding blueberry-honey cake with edible gold flakes, buttery toffee sauce and bruléed banana. Even something as familiar as a Caesar salad gets utterly upended, “East Meets West”-style, with Asian Caesar dressing, zested egg, rice noodle croutons and chili oil, atop a mound of shredded romaine. No matter the novelty, though, everything is intentional.
“I don’t like to deliberately use oddball foods,” Smith said of his culinary ethos. “The Caesar salad is a prime example. It’s a thing that you’ve seen a million times, but in a way that you’ve never seen it.”
And if you want to veer off-menu, that’s cool too. Even for diners not partaking in a tasting menu within The Crown Room, located in a private dining room near the bar, Smith offers three-course tastings and something called “I Don’t Give a F@%$,” wherein for $200, guests get a “no holds barred” version of The Crown Room tasting. Or if you’re just popping in, impromptu, for dinner at the bar, Smith — who is always just around the corner in the semi-open kitchen — is happy to oblige cravings and preferences, and whip up something on the fly.
“The Crown is, to me, what Oklahomans love about fine dining,” Smith said. “You have boxes you have to check. You need to have a really good steak. You need to have a super luxe whitefish dish. You need to have a pork dish. You’re checking boxes, and you can do what you want as a chef.”
And what he wants is to entertain, to challenge himself, and to put his own stamp on fine dining.
“The Crown is a 2024 version of what Oklahoma City has always loved about fine dining,” he said. “I want to entertain you in here. If I’m gonna do this, I’m gonna have fun, and you are as well.”

There’s a New Noodle in Town
Big Biang Noodle’s major impact in downtown
BY MATT KIROUAC
“WE’RE GONNA NEED A BIGGER bowl.” That’s what I thought when I first sampled the hand-pulled noodles at Film Row’s Big Biang Noodle, the brick-and-mortar location of a fan-favorite food truck that debuted — with a bang — in 2019. From ramen and pho to chow mein and vermicelli, noodles are not in short supply around the Oklahoma City metro, but unless you’ve stalked the food truck over the past few years, you likely haven’t slurped a noodle like this.
A Northwest Chinese style, the noodles are distinguished by their broad width and seemingly infinite length, here enrobed in chili-kissed sauce and tangled around chicken curry or meltingly tender cumin-braised beef. Noodles are handpulled after a lengthy preparation process that involves refrigeration, rolling the dough into balls, stretching it by hand and cooking it in hot water — all while combating humidity and finagling a product that’s infamously finicky.
“It’s perfectly imperfect,” summarized owner Davy Sangouanesy, who conceptualized the truck and drew inspiration from the likes of Xi’an Famous Foods in New York City. “We’re the only people doing hand-pulled noodles in the OKC metro.” That might be because of the extra effort that goes into each noodle. “The texture has bite to it, it has chew. The big pieces, the skinny pieces. You’re not getting fettuccine or udon. With this, every bite is different.”
After ramping up food truck events in 2022, routinely drawing lines down the block, Big Biang went bigger in late 2023 — with a storefront on Film Row. But just because the space is larger doesn’t mean the menu is; Sangouanesy deliberately keeps the menu concise, spotlighting a curated selection of those hand-pulled noodles, each one chewy and textured, a hearty canvas for bold flavors like chili crisp, sweet black vinegar
and spicy coconut curry. Each noodle dish is the result of a multi-day process that involves shipping in flour several times per week, rolling it into a glutinous dough, resting it in the refrigerator, cutting it in a dough sheeter, resting again and finally kneading it out and pulling the noodles by hand. It’s a labor of love, and a major effort that yields some of the best and burliest noodles in the city. And, mercifully, the bowls are just as big.
The hard work has paid off, too. Opening day at the restaurant saw lines down the block — a familiar sight for a brand that routinely commands crowds at events like the Festival of the Arts. This year, after auditioning to be one of the food vendors at the annual spring event, it was welcomed back sight unseen. “The top three vendors of the previous year don’t have to audition if they don’t change their food,” said Sangouanesy. And when the noodles are this big, this bold, this beloved, you needn’t change a thing.

Taking Soda to the Stratosphere
AFROPOP’s creative flavors and community roots
BY MATT KIROUAC | PHOTO BY RACHEL MAUCIERI
FOR SOME, SODA IS A JUST A SUGARY TREAT, OR A thirst-quenching burger companion. AFROPOP, a homegrown soda company in Oklahoma City, has carbonated ambitions reaching to the stars. It’s soda with an emphasis on community, as envisioned by owner Jamel Stephens, who launched the brand in late 2023 and weaves culture and art into every can.
“I knew from a young age that I wanted to positively impact people,” he said. “I had this question: ‘If Oklahoma had a soda company, what would it look like?’” Using something as comforting and familiar as soda as an entry point for altruism, he began tinkering with his own at-home flavors, using fresh ingredients from his local grocery store. “Once I figured out that I could make soda, I thought, ‘If I’m going to start a soda company, what do I want it to look like?’” The answer: “I wanted it to look like myself, and implement my culture into what I was creating.”
So began Oklahoma’s first Black-owned soda company. Using Afrofuturism as a guiding aesthetic, and highlighting the convergence of the African Diaspora with technology, Stephens tapped three local Black artists to design art for his first three flavors: NyLainah DeŃee Brewer for the butterscotch-inspired Grandma’s House, Dr. RJ Woods for the Blacker the Berry cream soda riff, and Leondre Lattimore for a blueberry lemonade soda called Summer Nights. Each can — from the label to the first sip — is distinct, but the community through-line is more than aluminum-deep.
“We focus on being socially conscious and socially aware, while also connecting community artistry and culture together,” explained Stephens. He pointed to Blacker the Berry as a reference to a song of the same name, but also to Black beauty itself. Grandma’s House, meanwhile, is an homage to
familial origins. “For a lot of Black people, their grandma is a sense of origin and love, so there’s a cultural connection as well,” he added. Summer Nights was done in reverse, inspired by Lattimore’s artwork. “The art inspired me to come up with a new name for it,” Stephens said. “The design, with a space theme, gave me the idea for a blueberry lemonade soda.”
Since its launch, AFROPOP has landed in markets, cafes and breweries all over the 405 (and now Tulsa too), offering non-alcoholic options, as well as a soda alternative rooted in something deeper. From Elemental Coffee and Vanessa House Beer Company to Eastside Pizza House and Toast & Coffee, the sodas can now be found in more than 60 locations. “I like to sell with likeminded people,” Stephens said. “For example, at Toast & Coffee, they carry a lot of local products, as well as their own items.”
In the future, Stephens is working on sugar-free options and new flavors, while adhering to his original vision: “We want to create products that are uniquely different. You can buy a lemon-lime anywhere, but a blueberry lemonade soda is nearly impossible.” He’s also working on getting a distributor, and into grocery stores. In addition to collaborating with more non-profits, he’s creating new products to support other minority communities too.
No matter how big AFROPOP gets, it’s a brand committed to its community. Said Stephens, “Our goal is to become a national brand that accurately represents the community of Oklahoma, as well as the artists that come from here.”

Opera Paints the Sky
Sharing song in Oklahoma City
BY LAVINIA CRESWA

OKLAHOMA HAS BEEN PRODUCING star-quality singers for decades — but for classically trained vocalists who long to sing on an opera stage, there was not an option in Oklahoma City to pursue those dreams. That is, until UCO music faculty members, Rob Glaubitz and Barbara DeMaio, began Painted Sky Opera in 2015.
“We were the largest city in America without a professional opera company,” Glaubitz said. “The more Barbara DeMaio and I thought about it, the more we realized how much the city needs it. Painted Sky fills a void in the arts landscape of Oklahoma City.”
Glaubitz and DeMaio quickly enlisted Becky McGuigan, a costume designer, as part of their team and founded Painted Sky Opera. This company is a professional step after college, featuring both local talent and singers from across the nation. And now in its eighth season, Painted Sky has become a staple in the arts community.
Performing in the newly renovated Little Theatre at the Civic Center, Painted Sky provides a unique, intimate experience to see what are traditionally large operas. “People always ask us, ‘If this is in a foreign language, how am I going to understand it?’” Glaubitz said. “Operas in America are projected with supertitles in English, so there is never a question on whether you can follow the plot. You will understand the story.”
And while it may be easy to think of opera as a stuffy, stagnant art form, Painted Sky shines a light on how American opera is a vital part of current classical music. Glaubitz noted, “We are big proponents of the American opera. There are dozens of American operas written every year that tell the stories of our communities and culture.”
But there is also room for the classics. This season begins June 20-23 with The Flying Dutch-
by Richard Wagner, the supernatural tale of a sea captain condemned by the devil to stay at sea for eternity. Every seven years, the captain may return to shore with the chance to break the curse if he can find a true love.
July 25-28, Lucia di Lammermoor by Gaetano Donizetti will take the stage. This is classic story of a forbidden romance, with drama and conflict brought to life with an incredible vocal score.
The season closes September 26-29 with American opera Lizzie Borden by Jack Beeson. This thrilling true-crime story chronicles the life and crime of perhaps the most infamous suspected murderer in American history.
In addition to producing a fully staged operas complete with costumes and a live orchestra, Painted Sky has a second element of its dual mission: to educate the community on opera. In the first two weeks of July, a touring production called The Bartered Banana will be a part of the Metro Library’s Neighborhood Arts Series. This adaptation of The Bartered Bride is intended to expose children to opera in a palatable way, but is also a good bet to be enjoyed by all.
In fact, during the school year, Painted Sky has a variety of educational endeavors. “We do an opera workshop called Opera 101 which connects kids to opera for the first time,” Glaubitz said. Painted Sky partners with alternative schools providing a week-long intensive for students who are deemed at-risk. “We help them create their own work on a topic they have chosen, which gets them in touch with their emotions in a different way.” For middle and high school students interested in opera, there is a monthly “Science of Singing” show at Science Museum Oklahoma.
Though opera has been an art form for more than 400 years, Painted Sky Opera continues to finds ways to connect all ages to the joy of classical music in a current and charismatic way. A Legacy of Resilience
The evolution and triumphs of the OKC Thunder
BY JAKE DURHAM
IN THE HEART OF OKLAHOMA, WHERE THE WIND comes sweeping down the plain, the OKC Thunder franchise has evolved into more than just a basketball team. It stands as a potent symbol of resilience and unity for Oklahomans. Since the team’s relocation to Oklahoma City in 2008, the Thunder has won the hearts of Oklahomans and remains a symbol of something that gives this city and state fierce pride.
At the forefront of the Thunder’s recent triumphs is Coach Mark Daigneault — honored as the recipient of the 2024 Michael H. Goldberg NBCA Coach of the Year award. This prestigious accolade, presented annually by the National Basketball Coaches Association (NBCA), recognizes a head coach who has significantly elevated team performance and is committed to community service. Voted on by the NBA’s head coaches, this award reflects peer recognition of excellence. Daigneault earned this recognition by steering one of the NBA’s youngest teams to a record-breaking season and a #1 seed in the playoffs.
At the heart of the Thunder lineup is Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, whose remarkable talent and leadership have made him a cornerstone of the franchise. This year, he was named one of three finalists for the “Kia NBA Most Valuable Player” award. Gilgeous-Alexander’s evolution into an elite NBA player is a testament to his dedication and the developmental environment fostered by the Thunder.
While the Thunder may not have bathed in championship glory yet since the team’s arrival in OKC, its journeys to the playoffs in recent years have been showcases of the players’ resilience and determination. Each playoff appearance has been a learning experience — a stepping stone that has shaped the team’s identity and strategy. These moments are not just about the wins and losses but about building a legacy and setting the foundation for future success. The playoffs have provided the team with invaluable experience and exposure, crucial for developing young talents like Gilgeous-Alexander and his peers.
Off the court, the Thunder organization has been a beacon of community engagement and development in Oklahoma City. Its unwavering commitment to local schools, youth programs and charitable organizations speaks to the entire organization’s dedication to societal improvement. From sponsoring basketball clinics for underprivileged children to donating to educational scholarships and organizing community clean-up events, the Thunder’s holistic approach to franchise management has endeared it to fans and made it a beloved entity in the NBA landscape. The effects are found not just on the court but in the hearts and lives of Oklahomans.
On Dec. 12, 2023, the Oklahoma City Thunder and its fans celebrated a significant achievement, with 71% of voters supporting the construction of a new arena estimated to cost $900 million. This approval is pivotal for the franchise, ensuring its future in Oklahoma City. The Thunder’s influence on the local economy is profound, contributing an estimated $600 million annually and supporting 3,000 jobs. This economic impact is not
limited to game days, as the team’s presence attracts visitors to the city who spend money at local businesses. The anticipated new venue will enhance this economic impact, attract significant concerts and host various events beyond basketball. The timeline for the arena’s completion aligns with the 2029-2030 NBA season.
The Thunder’s story is one of perseverance and anticipation. With a coach like Mark Daigneault at the helm, a star like Shai Gilgeous-Alexander leading the charge and a front office strategically building a roster of young, talented players, the present and future hold ample promise. However, the legacy of the Oklahoma City Thunder is not just defined by playoff appearances or the accolades of its coach and players, but by the team’s unwavering spirit and the relentless pursuit of greatness.
The Thunder continue to embody Oklahoma’s spirit as they continue their winning ways — presenting a formidable challenge to their NBA rivals and also standing as a symbol of resilience and hope for Oklahomans.

405: Describe your perfect day in the Plaza District.
Get a sneak peek of the first stop on our district tour
This summer, Cadillac sent Emmy Award-winning filmmaker and travel influencer Matt Payne (@mattpaynetravelphotography) on a tour of three of Oklahoma City’s most dynamic districts. From the bustling streets filled with boutique shops and local artisans to the tantalizing array of culinary delights, this series will spotlight the essence and charm of The Plaza, Midtown and Downtown. In this captivating three-part video series, Oklahoma’s own Prairie Surf (@prairiesurfmedia) takes us on an intimate journey into the heart and distinctiveness of each district. Follow along at @405mag as we debut a new video each month, beginning this June.
405: What makes the Plaza District so unique to Oklahoma City?
PAYNE: The Plaza District is the rock star of Oklahoma City districts. There is not a square inch of the entire neighborhood that isn’t overflowing with color and originality. There is so much soul — and it is most evident when you visit with any of the business owners, be they retail merchants, chefs or pie makers.
405: What surprises you most about the Plaza District?
PAYNE: What surprises me most about the Plaza is that the more time you spend exploring the district, the more you see. There is artwork and personality everywhere. Simply browsing a single store could take an hour, and in some of the shops (like Bad Granny’s Bazaar) you could spend an entire day!
PAYNE: I’d have to have refrained from eating a whole 24 hours before beginning my perfect day in the Plaza, to ensure I could eat at least something in every one of the restaurants. I’m not sure how the perfect day would start, but I imagine it would end with me walking away with a full belly, some new threads — shoes included — and some local art, a camera app full of photos and a pie to bring home to my kiddos.

OKC Ballet dancer Julien DeJear expresses himself through movement
BY EVIE KLOPP HOLZER
PHOTOS BY CHARLIE NEUENSCHWANDER
WORDS CAN ONLY SAY SO MUCH. Dance, on the other hand, provides endless opportunities for expression. That’s the experience of OKC Ballet dancer Julien DeJear, a soft-spoken teenager who speaks volumes when he’s on stage. Spinning gracefully and leaping fearlessly, DeJear has been honing his skills with OKC Ballet for the past seven years. He is currently a trainee in its Studio Company, which performs at public outreach events. DeJear has also been successfully dancing on the competitive stage, recently qualifying for the Youth America Grand Prix finals round in New York City. We caught up with DeJear just before this notable international competition.
Tell me about your introduction to ballet. When I was 7, I started gymnastics, and I did that for two years. What basically happened was that to get to the next level of gymnastics, you had to pay more money. We didn’t have the money to do that, so we decided to stop [gymnastics] … Then, my mother saw a thing in a magazine that said, “Free ballet classes for boys at OKC Ballet,” so we decided to do that, because I always wanted to take ballet. When I was a little kid, I saw Swan Lake, and I loved it ever since.
How old were you when you took your first classes at OKC Ballet?
I got here when I was 10. When I turned 9, I enrolled in — not OKC Ballet yet, but a small studio just down the street called Movement Innovations. I did that summer program where they gave me, like, ballet tap, jazz, hip-hop … I ended up liking the classical class.
What is it about classical dance that appeals to you?
I’m a pretty shy guy. Even in classes, I’m still shy. But when I go on stage — there’s something
about being on stage. It feels like nobody can judge me, because I’m performing. So I get to be, like, this different character almost. It’s really fun to perform and show off a little bit of what I can do, because I think I’m good at it.
Speaking of being good, tell me about competing. What is the Youth America Grand Prix?
It’s not just America: There are people from Indonesia, Australia, Korea — it’s international. There are like 10,000 people. It really shows what you can do, and other companies around the world can see what you can do. That’s why it’s pretty important, because everybody sees it.
What are you looking forward to most in the New York City finals?
I’m looking forward to performing, because it’s my favorite thing, and I really want to get onto the Lincoln Center Stage … The final final round is at Lincoln Center, which is really crazy. I’m so look-
ing forward to it. It’s like the most well-known stage in America.
Why have you stayed with ballet all these years?
I don’t know why. The first class I took — yeah, it was super fun … It’s also, like, sometimes I walk into this building feeling sick; my head hurts. And I literally just take class and, like, I don’t have a headache. Everything goes away. It’s like medicine.
Editor’s note: The week following this interview, DeJear competed against 84 others in the “senior male” category at the Youth America Grand Prix in New York City. He advanced to the final round and realized his dream of performing on the Lincoln Center Stage.

Feeding the Meter
An OKC-invented solution to parking woes
BY LINDA MILLER
FREE PARKING ON OKLAHOMA
City’s downtown streets was the norm in the early 1930s, but that was about to change.
Street parking had become a problem, with workers — who usually arrived early and didn’t move their cars until quitting time — snagging most of the nearby spots. Retail shoppers, along with anyone with bank or business appointments, often had to park blocks away, leaving many people unhappy on a daily basis.
In 1932 the Oklahoma City Chamber of Commerce urged Carl C. Magee, chairman of the Traffic Committee, to find a solution for the insufferable parking problem.
Magee, a lawyer and newspaperman who came from New Mexico to Oklahoma City six years earlier to spearhead the Oklahoma News publication, envisioned a small, mechanical timed device that would be easy to use and monitor. He built a rough prototype; patented it; and then collaborated with professors at what is now Oklahoma State University on a working model.
The world’s first parking meter, known as the Park-O-Meter, was installed on the southeast corner of what was then First Street and Robinson Avenue in front of First National Bank on July 16, 1935. More than 170 other meters were installed and tested along 14 blocks in Oklahoma City. Initially, the rollout called for meters on just one side of the street, but that changed almost immediately as city officials saw parking congestion ease. Nearly 300 more meters were installed by year’s end.
One nickel bought one hour of parking, and losing track of time was costly: A $20 fine was issued for cars left parked at an expired meter. Some people complained that meters were just a way to cushion city coffers, but there was no going back. Interest was piqued by local newspapers often featuring pictures and stories about the meters, including one about a 9-yearold girl who deposited a nickel thinking it was a gumball machine.
Dallas soon added meters on local streets, followed by other cities in Texas and Kansas.
Magee’s Dual Parking Meter Co., named for the dual functions of measuring parking time and collecting fees, thrived with more than 50,000 meters sold between 1935 and 1940.
To promote the meters to other cities, Magee made a film showing Oklahoma City’s streets before and after the meters, and how the machines worked and were serviced. In 1937, the meter’s name was changed from Park-O-Meter to Dual Parking Meter to channel the company name — which eventually became the MageeHale Park-O-Meter Co.; Magee served as president until his death in 1946.
As decades passed, it became more difficult to find parts for mechanical parking meters. In 2017, Oklahoma City started replacing its familiar meters with multispace kiosks that are computerized and accept credit cards. Spaces are still patrolled and expired time still results in a citation issued electronically and uploaded to the municipal court system.
These days, charge cards are a convenient way to feed the meter. Who still carries around a pocketful of change? And even those few who do may not have the correct coins needed … as was the case for Reverend C.H. North all the way back in 1935.
A month after the first meters were installed, the reverend parked at one only to realize he had no nickel. He ran into a nearby store to get change, but a ticket was waiting for him when he returned. It was the first ticket given for a parking meter violation in Oklahoma City.
As CBS News reported in 2022 during a segment on the meter’s anniversary, “… even God can’t save you from a parking ticket.”
